Editor’s letter It’s Your Life Remember that story about Goha, his son and the donkey? Let me refresh your memory a bit. One day, Goha was riding his donkey on his way to the market with his son. A small group of people saw Goha and told him, “How can you be so heartless, Goha? How can you ride on the donkey while your son walks beside you?” So Goha jumped off and lifted his son up onto the donkey’s back. When Goha and his son came across some women on the road, the women commented, “How is it that an old man walks while his young son rides on the donkey? Surely this is not right!” Goha made up his mind and climbed the donkey’s back with his son and they continued on their journey. Some passersby cried out to Goha with disapproval, “Can’t you see that you are both too heavy and your donkey can’t support your weight?” Eventually, Goha decided to walk with his son the rest of the way. When he arrived at the marketplace, many people made fun of him saying, “What a fool! What kind of a man owns a donkey and yet walks with his son when he should be riding?” Poor Goha, whatever you did, people always criticized you. What happened with Goha happens with all of us everyday. It is IMPOSSIBLE to please everyone all the time. People are different, so how can you satisfy them all at the same time? You just can’t! People will never stop talking, commenting, criticizing, and gossiping. Of course not everyone is like this, but still, a lot of people possess the ugly attribute of giving too much attention to other people’s lives. By ‘too much attention,’ I don’t mean ‘care.’ Here I’m talking about the bad side of attention; that attention that makes you feel you want to tell people, “Give to yourselves more time than that you dedicate for criticizing and discussing other people’s affairs.” Do what you want, what you love, what you enjoy, what you’re convinced of, what makes you happy, comfortable and satisfied. That’s what you should do; it’s your life after all, isn’t it? However, each one of us has to know there are limits that we can’t cross. You can’t kill and say, “I don’t care what people say.” You can’t steal and say, “It’s my own business.” You can’t deceive others and say, “It’s just that I see it from a different perspective.” As long as what you’re doing is only affecting your life and will not have consequences on the lives of others, feel free. But mind you, even if you think that your action will hold positive results for others, it’s not your right to go along and not care about them, because what’s positive in your opinion might be considered by others to be negative. It’s your life; think, decide and enjoy…

Step outside your current style comfort zone, in other words, hit the print parade. Craziest fashion that might provoke society. More wilder trends to try and further style risks to invade. Shine a little brighter and wear even more colors than you do. Establish a strong love affair with colors; all colors. However, always remember and keep in mind that trends come and go, but timeless pieces are forever. Thus, plan to invest way more in classics… designer classics.

Target way less makeup and way more lipstick. Forget the diamonds for now. Heels and lipsticks are the real girl’s best friends. Wear whatever, style whatever BUT fine-looking, pretty, stunning, sexy stilettos and bright red lipstick would dazzle and amaze any look whatsoever. Yves Saint Laurent
Accessorize shrewdly with humongous rings, statement chokers, fancy clutches, stylish hats, striking foulards, funky earrings and bangles all the way. A simple basic outfit could look effortlessly gorgeous when accessorized fantastically.

Beauty
The Subtle
Makeover BY: MAHA ABDEL-LATIF
W
hile the word “makeover” is said to have a positive connotation and is supposed to make you look and feel refreshingly new, the word also has the ability to give us a bit of a panic attack. we want to change up our look many times, but the thought of a drastic haircut or a new hair color gives us the heebie-jeebies. Watching those beautiful locks fall to the floor at the hair salon has brought countless girls to tears (and no, I’m not exaggerating for dramatic effect - actual tears have been spotted next to those said locks.)
Makeover Tip No. 1: Bangs If you don’t want to commit to an extreme cut but still want to change the way your hair falls around your face, try a classic fringe (cut fairly straight just above the eyebrows) or side-swept bangs. No matter which type you choose, bangs will instantly frame your face and give you a completely new look. And the best part is you can simply pin your bangs back if you want to go a day without them or leave them to grow back out if you just want to try them out for a short while.
Makeover Tip No. 2: Faux Bob
Fool everyone into thinking you actually did get an extreme makeover by mastering the art of the faux bob. Simply pull your hair back into a low ponytail using a sock bun, leaving your bangs and any shorter layers untied and loose. Tuck the ponytail and the sock bun underneath the part of the hair above the sock bun. Pin the ends under the sock bun with bobby pins and voila! You have yourself a brand new “haircut!” Note: If you don’t have a sock bun handy, you can use a normal elastic, but you will need to tease your hair and use plenty of hairspray to get the same voluminous look.
38 | January 2014
Makeover Tip No. 3: Bolder Brows
Probably one of the easiest, yet vastly transforming things you can do to change your look is to go bolder with your eyebrows. Natural is always preferred, so you can apply castor oil every night to your eyebrows to grow them in. Meanwhile, try using an eyebrow filler or eyebrow pencil to fill in those gaps and create more shapely brows. Try it first on one side of your face and just look at the difference it makes.
Makeover Tip No. 4: Change your Part and/or Add Some Layers
Another trick to change up your hair without doing anything that you might later regret is to simply change your part and/or add some layers. While changing your part may seem too simple of a task to be considered a makeover, you’d be surprised at the different angles of your face you can reveal with this little trick. And if that’s not enough, have your hair stylist add layers to your hair without taking away significant length. If done correctly, this will add volume and shape to your hair that will have everyone throwing you compliments left and right.>> January 2014 | 39
Makeover Tip No. 5: Go Bolder With Makeup
For an obvious and zero-commitment makeover, try going bolder with your makeup. Experiment with different eyeliner techniques, try bold lip colors, highlight and contour, try more voluminous lashes - the sky is the limit. Something as simple as lining your eyes differently or trying a bold red lip can take your look from plain to va-va-voom in an instant – just look at Taylor’s transformation!
Makeover Tip No. 6: Go One Shade Lighter/Darker or Try Ombré Hair
For a hair color change that is not-so-extreme, try going only one shade lighter or one shade darker than your natural hair color. While this is in no way a drastic change, going from one shade to another can completely transform your appearance and make your eye color pop. Or, for an even lower-maintenance change to your hair, you can try the ombré effect by only changing the color of the ends of your hair. This will not only completely change your look, but it is a change that does not require constant up-keep since you will not have to worry about re-doing your roots.
Try any one (or a combination) of these subtle makeover techniques and watch yourself transform right before your own eyes. For step-by-step instructions and video tutorials on how to create any of these subtle makeovers, visit www.TheCairoCloset.com/blogs.

Winter Makeup Bag Makeover BY: AYAT SEIF ELNASR
T
his month, just like I revamped my closet, I did the same for my makeup bag. I did a drastic makeover to the components of my makeup bag; I even changed my makeup bag itself. The reason for that is that my skin changes with the change of seasons and weather (don’t we all?) and since it has been crazy in Egypt lately with all the rain and cold (... and snow!), my skin tended to be a bit dry, pale due to the lack of sun, and acne prone for some reason which rarely occurs to me.
My makeup bag is a very old Gucci makeup bag that I have almost never used. My dad got it to me from Italy around 7 years ago. It is very pretty but tiny and maybe that is why I never bothered to pack all of my stuff in it since it won’t take everything I need. In that Gucci makeup bag, I packed my newly loved RiRi Hearts Mac Hibiscus Kiss Bronzer/Blush Duo, which has the perfect two shades of blush and bronzer that suit my pale skin this month. It is described as a “cool coral blush and matte neutral bronze duo.” I’m currently using both, the bronzer for contouring, and the blush as a blush. The bronzer is a matte neutral bronze, which makes it perfect for contouring too, not just bronzing. It’s a medium-dark tan with warm, yellow-orange undertones and a matte finish. It has a good, buildable color payoff with a soft, smooth texture. I rarely find a bronzer that suits my skin tone for some reason, and this one is the one I have been looking for. I have previously loved Bourjois Maxi Delight Bronzer, but that was when I was slightly tanned in the summer, but now that I have lost the color, that shade looks orange and fake on my skin. Lucky me, now I have an even better substitute for my bronzing and contouring routine. The blush is a softly warmed-up, coral-pink with a satiny sheen. The color seemed very dark and pigmented in the pan, but when applied, it looked very sheer and light. RiRi Hearts Mac Hibiscus Kiss Bronzer/Blush Duo 42 | January 2014
RiRi Hearts MAC Lipglass or Lipstick that suits a day to night look and lasts long enough to reapply if I’m heading somewhere after work. This shade (whether lipglass or lipstick) has been the gossip of the world for a while now, why? Because it is the ultimate red lipstick. I believe it is a universal shade of red that works with whichever skin tone you have. MAC describes it as a “cool red cream.” It is neither shimmery nor sparkly; it is a shade you can swear by.
Bourjois Maxi Delight Bronzer
For my complexion, I included Benefit the POREfessional to subtly hide my enlarged pores around my nose and top of my forehead. I use it in the days I do not want to apply foundation, or as a primer underneath the foundation. When I bought this product for the first time two years ago, I didn’t understand what it was for, I only got it in a X-Mas package offer along with Benetint, Some Kind-a Gorgeous and a couple of blushes. On the packaging it states that it is a balm that minimizes the appearance of the pores, but after purchasing and reading other reviews, I realized that it is a face primer too. I have a combined skin with obvious pores on my nose and the area around it. I seriously don’t know how I ever lived without this product. First of all, I’m not the kind of person who uses foundation on daily basis. My daily makeup routine is just transparent mascara, blush and lip balm. On sunny days, I tend to add a dab of powder on my T-zone just to prevent oily skin days. After I RiRi Hearts MAC discovered this product, it was immediately added to my skin routine. Lipstick To hide my blemishes and acne, I added to my makeup bag NYX Cosmetics Concealer Jar in beige. Its consistency is thick enough to hide both my severe under-eye circles and my newly acquired blemishes. I got three shades of this concealer: yellow, beige and orange. This is by far one of the best concealers I have ever used. It doesn’t grease, fade and very little can do the job. This concealer has a variety of 6 shades and 4 shades of corrector. However, don’t be deceived by the small pot as I’m sure it will last a year, even if you use it on a daily basis, if not more.
Benefit the POREfessional
For my lashes, I am still in love with Rimmel Scandaleyes Lycra Flex Mascara that I restocked and I’m going to restock more till I find a new one to love. I have a thing for fat brushes and this is the one for me. It gives me thick lashes from the roots to the tips and accentuates my lashes that I barely need one coat of it. No mascara could give me the length and volume I wanted without smudging or flaking except a few, and this one is on top of that list. I didn’t forget Labello Fruity Shine Strawberry; my companion throughout winter to cure my chapped lips. Faces of Egypt

Ahmed Haggagovic Egyptian Globe
Trotter
BY: YOSRA SHOHAYEB “Dream, believe, go…” is Ahmed Haggagovic’s slogan. Haggagovic, a world-changer, is living his slogan every day, and prompting everyone to live it with him through his everlasting inspiration, which radiated in more than 108 countries, and still is, especially in Egypt. A person like Haggagovic adds an echo to the name Egyptian, and adds a glow to the Egyptian flag. Tag along, and meet the Egyptian Globe Trotter and Peace Activist to get charged with motivation like never before. Your passion for travelling began when you were four years old; tell us more about that? This is where it all began, at the swimming pool, when a telepresenter asked me, what I wanted to do when I grew older, I replied very quickly and impulsively, “I want to go to Japan,” because it is the farthest country in the world. I never witnessed anyone back then traveling to Japan, even though it 44 | January 2014
Afterwards, I took my word as a challenge. I started drawing planes, and planet earth all around the house, writing “Please God, I want to travel” on the walls. My mother started to get mad at me, because she even found such drawings under the table. I drew everywhere, in my schoolbooks as well, which was a contributing reason to memorizing planet earth. When did you take it beyond “writing on walls”? When I was 14 years old, my mother was really starting to get pissed off, and she was always making jokes about my dream of travelling the world. Finally, I stopped writing on walls, and I took a piece of paper and made a dream list of everything I want to do in my life, which I still carry till today, for example, I want to speak another foreign language; I speak five fluent languages today, some without lessons. A year from writing my dream list, my grandfather passed away, after that day I decided to start, because I promised him so. He always told me “don’t let anyone tell you you can’t do something in your life.” Following my dream list, I insisted on traveling on my own to a foreign country. I borrowed money, and saved my allowance, in order to accomplish one of my dreams. Nevertheless, my grandfather was the first step towards achieving my dream, as he built courage in me. He always inspired me by his travels, adventures, and stories. I started to count the countries post University, where my first destination was South America.
Were your parents supportive of your dream? Believe it or not, they weren’t. They were all against me, even my siblings. My father, on the other hand, supported me. Since I was a little kid, he was always planting patriotism inside of me, and always showing me the importance of the Egyptian flag. My father always told me, “If you are not making someone else’s life better, then you are wasting your time.” He always urged me to inspire other people, and carry a message through my travels, which benefits people locally and internationally. “Don’t be that man, who just travels without a purpose,” my father always said. And this is when I decided to become the first human in history to set foot in every country in the world with my Egyptian flag, which has never been done before. What is the message that you aim to send through your travels? My aim is uniting all man-kind without stereotypes. After I entered University, I wanted to do something that really has a message behind it, so I thought of three words, freedom, because it’s the infrastructure of every human living, then happiness, if you are free then you’ll be happy, and happiness is contagious; therefore the third word, peace, as it is the consequence of both freedom and happiness. My motto is “One World United, No racism, No Borders, and One World United in One Human.” It must be hectic requesting a visa every time you travel. Yes, it frustrates me. I have an Egyptian passport, so I have to ask for a visa each time I travel. Vietnam, for example, gives you the visa for a duration of 15 days, and so you have to adjust your whole trip upon that. Singapore supported me once by giving me an extra entry, because I had to go back and forth. Especially, that I am not just passing, but I am passing with
cameras and trying to videotape everything. I took the visa of 102 countries, whereas the other six did not need a visa in the first place. All of these trips must be very expensive; do you receive funds? No. I didn’t benefit financially from any of my trips. I have sold my house, my car, and spent all my money. I worked remote jobs in several countries, so I was able to travel, while working. Where did the name Haggagovic come from? Hagaggovic means Haggag the victorious, named by my Russian journalist friend. Afterwards, all newspapers and TV shows started addressing me as Haggagovic, which I am very proud of, as it is unique. Your life is clearly unstable, how does that feel? I got used to this. It’s not like I am against marriage, but she has to be someone, who will never kill my dreams. In Egypt, I do not have much friends, my closest friends are Russian, Australian, and Brazilian. Sometimes I feel lonely. However, I am trying to make history, and everything has advantages, and disadvantages as well. Witnessing uncountable developments, what do you hope for Egypt? I hope for unity between all Egyptians, regardless of their religion. I also hope for youth to lead. You have to take the experience from elder people, but youth are the real power to a better country. For more info, check: www.facebook.com/Haggagovic January 2014 | 45

Top Choice Admissions Egypt’s First & Only Elite Admissions Consulting BY: FARAH ASFOUR We have always been fascinated by young Egyptian entrepreneurs, their original ideas, the potential they hold and their determination to succeed and fulfill their dreams. This is the exact feeling we had when we heard about Top Choice Admissions and met the team behind it. Top Choice Admissions has more than 30 highly qualified consultants, 50% of whom are based here in Egypt and the other 50% in the US and Europe. They offer admissions consulting to universities in the US, the UK, Canada, Germany and France. The company was founded by Omar Khashaba, 24, graduate of London School of Economics and Cornell University; and Ahmed Ismail, 24, graduate of UC Berkeley. Another great contributor in the team is Noah Chasek, 24, who holds the position of Director of Operations. Last year alone, they helped 150 students get into international top universities, thus having direct impact on the lives of a lot of young people. To know how they did that and what else they want to achieve in the future, we talked to Omar who explained it all. Your business idea is an unusual one, especially since we are talking about Egypt. So tell me how did you come up with it? I was a top class student in DEO and in my senior year, I was selected to study on a German government scholarship program. Although I always wanted to become a lawyer and had a feeling that I was destined 46 | January 2014
to become one, I kept changing my mind every two weeks in my senior year but I eventually decided to study law in Germany. After spending a year in Germany, I realized that in German universities, you are not allowed to change your major (unlike in the US) and that German law would limit my options in the future as it was only related to Germany so was not going to be of great benefit to me if I wanted to work outside Germany. At that point, I made another decision of moving to London to study law at London School of Economics where it would take me 3 years to get my degree versus 7 years in Germany. Moreover, the British law is internationally predominant, which was much better in my case. All this confusion and change of plans could have been avoided if I’d had been well informed about the different options I had. No one guided me nor provided me with a comparative analysis of the different educational systems. That experience of my own was what showed me the importance of academic advising. You came to a conclusion that academic advising is important and that the presence of a person to guide students in their decision making process can be life changing. How was this then turned into an actual business? In my final year of university, I received an offer of admission to the Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree program from Cornell University in New York. But by the time my visa was issued, the program had already started and I had to defer it for a year. That left me with a gap year from August 2011 till August 2012, which I spent in Egypt. I seized the opportunity of being in Egypt and made up my mind to start a business, especially that I have enjoyed the act of managing, have loved being responsible for a project and have always been interested in entrepreneurship. So the intention and the will were there but remained the business idea. At that time, some friends, cousins, and younger generations in DEO used to ask me about university admissions abroad. The same happened with my friend Ahmed Ismail who was on a tennis scholarship at UC
Berkeley and was studying Business Economics. He was always asked about getting tennis scholarships and other athletic scholarships too. We thought, “Why don’t we combine both our experiences and help students out in determining their future?” and that was how we founded Top Choice Admissions for offering elite academic and athletic admissions consulting services. We started in January 2012 with two applicants whom we personally knew, they told their friends about us, more and more people came, the workload increased, I couldn’t handle all the work myself since Ahmed was still in Berkeley, and I started hiring people. We wanted to focus on elite university admissions so we had to make sure that everyone working with us had credibility, which meant they had to be graduates of one of the top 10 universities in the US, the UK and Canada. How did you succeed in earning people’s trust and making them come to you for advice that would impact the rest of their lives and not just look at you as inexperienced young people? Actually this was a real problem at the beginning. We were 22 when we started our business and we had to build credibility. We get our credibility from offering area specific and country specific approach and by only hiring best of the best. Whoever provides the advice at Top Choice Admissions has first-hand experience to back it up. After people knew what we exactly offered and how it worked, our ages were not a problem anymore. And we offered free one-hour consultation in the beginning to ease any concerns people might have had. Can you explain to us the area specific and country specific approach you are working with? To put it simply, we offer relevant advice. For example, if a student wants to study engineering, an advisor who studied political science won’t be of great help. It will rather help the student to talk to someone who studied engineering at a top university, preferably in the country where the student wants to study. If that student wants to study in the US and comes to us for advice, he will talk to someone who went to MIT, who knows the different engineering specializations there and also knows what engineering students actually study. Not only that but the advisor will also tell the student what to do in order to increase his/her chances of being accepted into MIT. After all that, the student will be able to make an informed decision. What about the feedback; are people actually willing to pay money in
return for academic advice? In fact, the conversion rate after the first consultation session has been 90-95%. The only time when people don’t proceed with the service is when they decide they don’t want to travel abroad. In your opinion, why are universities abroad academically stronger than universities in Egypt even private ones? Universities abroad can afford to attract the world’s top academic talent. The way the system works allows them to create and maintain strong bonds with their alumni. Those alumni donate millions of dollars to their universities because they remain loyal to their alma mater; this is such a big word in the US, some universities even have the equivalent of a national anthem. This keeps alumni faithful to their universities. Universities in Egypt can’t compare to universities abroad in terms of financial resources. An Ivy League university can financially support its students in all kinds of ways where every program has a huge amount of funding. They get the latest equipment and the best staff, they have an excellent student-teacher ratio. In some cases, you might have only six students in class. To keep this system going, those universities attract top talents and select people whom they believe will be successful in the future and donate back. Another important factor is competition. In the US, there are around 4,000 good universities but in Egypt the number is merely three or four. Of course competition between three universities will never yield the same results of that between 4,000 universities. What are your upcoming plans? We want to completely dominate the Egyptian market. We want to change the culture of college admissions in Egypt. Only 10-20% of eligible students apply abroad because the culture doesn’t help them; they don’t know where to start, they start late, and sometimes the application isn’t as strong as it should be. We want to raise that percentage by offering free seminars in schools, spreading the culture of early preparation, raising awareness and encouraging people to follow their passion. We have already started working with 9th and 10th graders as a way of encouraging the culture of early preparation because that is the time where students should start making plans for college. We aim to be a one stop shop for university and college preparation. In addition, we want to expand regionally and fill a gap in the Middle East. We already have clients from Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Dubai. For more info, check: www.topchoiceadmissions.com January 2014 | 47

Faces of Egypt Can you give our readers some quick beauty tips? I would tell every girl to just be yourself and have self-confidence. Keep it simple and choose only one area to focus on. For example, if going for smokey eyes, then nude lips, and if going for red lips, then nude eye makeup. Always have a couple of your favorite makeup products with you, in case you need them for any situation. What do you dream of achieving in the future? I dream of reaching such high level of professionalism in my field that people would use me as a reference.

Would you please give us a brief introduction about yourself? My name is Sandy Matar. I graduated from Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime, marketing major. How did you start your journey as a makeup artist? My journey started very early when I was a little girl putting my mum’s makeup. I have always known that I love doing this. Who are your favorite makeup artists, whether on the local or the international level? Sam Fine and Tom Pecheux What are the latest makeup trends this season? This season the “no makeup makeup” -which is having makeup but not as sharp lines as before- is in style. Thick eyebrows are playing huge role this season, try not to forget this. Gold eye shadows and caramel brown are so fashionable. Vampy lips, wine lips and pink lips will make the look perfect. For more info, check facebook fanpage: Sandy Matar’s Makeup
There are a lot of talented makeup artists in Egypt today, how do you deal with the fierce competition and what do you do to stand out? I don’t consider it fierce competition, because makeup is all about taste and style, and each and every makeup artist has their own style. So when a client chooses a specific makeup artist, it is because she likes that artist’s taste. What do you like most about your work? What I love most is having the chance to meet new people every time and showing every girl the beauty she has, as I believe that everyone have their own beauty. January 2014 | 49

microsoft office in vienna Take a look at your office around you. Does it inspire you? Does it sate your working appetite? Does it make your creativity travel to cloud nine? Is your office the perfect environment that you ‘need’ to work in? If most of your answers are yes, then you are definitely a lucky fellow; however, if no, which we assume all Egyptian employees will answer, then it’s time to change! Recent studies have concluded that creative work environment helps stimulate minds and inspire innovation. Google is a great example for innovative working spaces; some have standing desks, a few even have attached treadmills so they can walk while working. Google might be over the top, but what matters is that they are achieving their idea: “to create the happiest, most productive workplace in the world,” according to a Google spokesman, Jordan Newman.

My five- year- old daughter has noticeable body odor, it has been like this for the last 18 months. Should I be concerned? Doctor’s Answer:
As long as it’s not a hygiene or diet issue, children of this age should not really have a body odor. There are certain odors that are indicative of an underlying problem: diabetes, precocious puberty or some metabolic problem to name a few.

How safe are laser hair removals? Will it hurt my skin health?
How bad are tongue piercings for my teeth?
Doctor’s Answer:
Doctor’s Answer:
Laser hair removal is safe and effective in patients of all skin colors. It works well on pigmented hairs but not well on blonde or gray hairs. It is important to have the right laser and experienced person performing the procedure for safe treatment. Lasers generally help stimulate new collagen growth in the skin, so they are actually beneficial for improving skin health.
The common complications from tongue piercing are bleeding, infection, nerve damage, gum disease and injuries to the teeth. Only a few patients have required a hospitalization and IV antibiotics to treat infections of the tongue. It is possible to crack or chip teeth with your piercing. Also constant pressure against frontal teeth might create teeth movement and requires braces.

Why do people with borderline personality disorder sabotage their own interpersonal relationships?
Doctor’s Answer:
Doctor’s Answer:
Exercise Induced Asthma affects people who don’t have other asthma symptoms. They are more sensitive to temperature and humidity of the air. Cold dry air inhaled through the mouth reacts with warm moist air in the lungs triggering an attack. Breathing through the nose warms and humidifies air, which helps. It is hard to breathe through your nose when exercising but a face mask/scarf may help.

Why am I having trouble swallowing - feels like there is something in my throat but no symptoms except coated tongue? Doctor’s Answer:
One of the most common reasons my patients complain of this symptom is acid reflux. A small bit of acid can come up when you lay flat and it causes swelling of the larynx. This causes the feeling that something is stuck in your throat. Avoid spicy foods, acid foods, and eating late at night.
They don’t do it on purpose. Instead, they have difficulty maintaining an inner image of their partner still being “good,” during times of disappointment; it is as if the good times never existed, and they are aware of only pain and rage. Can I wear white jeans in winter? If yes, how can they be worn? Expert’s Answer:
White jeans in winter used to be a big fashion no-no, but that’s no longer the case. White was a spotted trend on the Fall 2013 runways, so yes, white jeans can be winter appropriate. Pair your white jeans with a black sweater for a fail-safe style, or go for an all-white look and wear it with a white lace top. Add cold weather fashion staples like ankle boots to keep your overall look wintery.

When to Seek the Advice of a Hand Surgeon? BY: DR. ADEL HUSSEIN AMR
O
ur hands are the means by which we interact with our environment. A very small problem with the hand can leave us with a disability that may change our lifestyle or work completely. Hand surgery is an extremely delicate branch of surgery that most people do not know about. It is the branch of surgery which treats all conditions of the upper limb. This includes the skin, muscles, tendons, bones, joints, nerves and blood vessels.
62 | January 2014
There is a huge spectrum of medical conditions that necessitate a consultation with a hand surgeon. These conditions include trauma or accidents leading to injuries of any of the structures of the hand and upper limb. It also includes congenital anomalies in which babies are born with different abnormalities of the hands. Burns of the hand and upper limb are also among these conditions. They also include the numbness affecting the fingers, patients with rheumatoid disease and symptoms appearing in the hands, patients developing a difficulty or pain on moving their fingers and maybe inability to fully extend the finger. A wide range of benign and malignant tumours may arise in the upper limb whether from the bone or the soft tissues. Babies can be born with a wide range of abnormalities affecting hands and upper limbs. This can be a simple extra finger or two fingers stuck to each other. It can be a missing or short finger. Accidents during deliveries whether normal or caesarean sections might lead to complete or partial paralysis of the upper limbs. Conditions that might affect the central nervous system during the early neonatal period may leave the upper limbs spastic. All these abnormalities may be treated by hand surgeons to ensure normal or near normal function of your baby’s hands. Burns very commonly affect the hands, and this is a serious condition. The consequences of burns of the hands can be dramatic if not treated properly. This is because healing of the burn wound can lead to many abnormalities in the movement of the hands and fingers which might leave the burned hand with a disability which could have been easily avoided. Old burns which already have left the patient with a deformity or disability can be subjected to reconstructive procedures aiming at improving the looks and function of the hand.
The nerves in our body are very sensitive to the surrounding environment. It is like developing numbness of the legs and feet if we stay in the same position for a long time. At the wrist, there is a tight area through which nerves pass giving sensation to the hand. When these nerves are subject to pressure like during inflammatory conditions and pregnancy, they cause numbness and weakness of hands. A hand surgeon can determine what the best modality to treat such condition is. Our tendons pass through narrow channels which sometimes become inflamed so the tendons are stuck. It is painful to move them and in many situations movement is associated with a click that we can hear. The solution to this is simple; either by injecting medication or a small procedure under local anaesthetic. Rheumatoid patients may go to their doctors with symptoms of the fingers, like pain in their small joints of the hand or numbness. Sometimes it is related to certain time of the day like in the morning. If the condition progresses, they may develop deformities. The treatment ranges from medications to splinting to operative procedures. The hands are among the parts of our bodies that are always exposed to the environment, just like the face. Patients, especially women, seek the beauty of their hands as well as their faces. Aging spots and wrinkles can be treated like the face by dermabrasion, peels, laser and filler and fat injection which make the skin look younger and healthier. More cosmetic procedures can be done in patients complaining of obesity of their arms or redundancy of the skin of the arms after losing weight. These conditions can be treated by liposuction or lifting procedures depending on the judgement of the surgeon.
“
Love of beauty is taste. The creation of beauty is art. Ralph Waldo Emerson
“
Hand surgery nowadays is a separate entity. It is a subspecialty of two main branches of surgery, Plastic Surgery and Orthopaedic Surgery. Most plastic and orthopaedic surgeons have been trained in hand surgery, but not all of them are sub specialized in this field. In the past, when a patient suffered from any condition affecting the upper limb they used to go to a general plastic or orthopaedic surgeon, but this is not the case anymore. Patients should seek a surgeon specialized in hand surgery. This is what guarantees the best management of their condition.

Total Workout MAKEOVER
Y
BY: SAMIRA KHALIL
ou’re not witnessing change in your body? You’re getting bored? You’re too comfortable while training? You’re not seeing results? If your answers are YES to most of those questions, you are probably stuck in a workout rut. It’s time for a TOTAL WORKOUT MAKEOVER.
To achieve maximum results and get the most out of your workouts, it’s critical for your health and body that you train for all different fitness aspects: Speed, endurance, agility, power, balance and even flexibility. This is great for preventing injury, enhancing your fitness abilities and definitely you’ll get a better calorie burn.
HIIT stands for High Intensity Interval Training. HIIT is an exercise strategy that alternates periods of short, intense anaerobic exercise with less intense recovery periods.
Why HIIT Intervals? HIIT Intervals are known for their big calorie burn and fat utilization in the most efficient time. Switching between high and low intensity cardio (like walking and running, jogging and sprinting or you name it) will confuse your body while keeping the heart rate elevated most of the time. HIIT workouts burn more calories than do steady state workouts. Also HIIT creates after burn effect where you keep burning calories even after you finish exercising because the body will be recovering from the “oxygen deficit” created during the workout. This after burn is called excess post exercise consumption (EPOC).
HIIT is the game changer HIIT Intervals can be done anywhere with no equipment. You don’t need 60 minutes when 20 to 30 minutes of hard, busting it out intervals will give you more than the hour struggling to get through. A typical example of the HIIT is TABATA with a 2 to 1 ratio, as in 20 seconds of high intensity as hard as you can followed by 10 second rest. You repeat this pattern for 8 intervals and switch to another move.
HIIT workouts are ideal for people who
• Don’t have much time and looking for an express workout that burns a lot of calories • Want to improve their cardiovascular fitness • Want to increase their metabolism. The key here is that you want to target 80-100% effort, then rest. HIIT moves are meant to be intense and hard. Trust me, if you worked at maximum intensity, you won’t be able to exceed 2 minutes continuously.
Format: • 20 seconds of maximum intensity you can accomplish • 10 seconds rest • For each exercise, repeat 8 cycles (4 minutes total)
Total Time: Each exercise takes 4 minutes. A 32 minute incorporates 8 different exercises. Balance upper-body, lower-body for a complete workout.
Music: Play any high-energy music as background.
“
Exercise is like an addiction. Once you’re in it, you feel like your body needs it.

Foods and drinks for soothing sick kids with cold and sore throats.
Fix with Food
Chicken soup, of course, is the classic remedy for colds and sore throats. Another soup option is tomato soup with milk. Cut tomato soup’s high acid content (which may not feel good on sick kids’ throat) with milk. Simply dilute the tomato soup with milk rather than water. Make your kid a cup of warm cider using water, cinnamon, apples and allspice, or warm up some diluted apple juice and with cinnamon sticks for flavor. If your child has a fever, try applesauce topped with a few raisins and a little cinnamon sugar.

How to Reach your Ideal Body Fat? BY: sherine el shimi
W
e all want to achieve the ideal body fat percentage. We hear so many rumors and fake facts all the time. We obsess constantly about our current weight and we want to make sure that when we attempt to use the scale, we see the weight we are used to, even though we don’t really know if that means that our body fat percentage is within the average or ideal range.
Age range
So let’s get some facts straight. The ideal body fat percentage is very different between men and women. It also differs between different age groups in both women and men. To have a more accurate idea, have a look at the following table:

Measuring the middle part of your body would give you an idea of where you stand with regard to the fat percentage. • Place a tape measure on your stomach just above your hip bone. • Make sure that the tape doesn’t push into the skin. • Make sure that the tape is the same level all the way round. • Relax, exhale and take the measurement. A waist measurement, which exceeds 89 cm, indicates a high risk of diabetes type 2, heart disease and high blood pressure.
Challenge: Follow the previous tips for two weeks and record your waist measurements. You will feel the difference.
Example of a fat loss plan: Breakfast: 1. Four large spoons of oats with a glass of skimmed milk 2. Four large spoons of foul (black beans) with one brown toast and four teaspoons of olive oil 3. Two brown toasts with one boiled or scrambled egg.
Snack: So how do you trim that body fat?
10 Almonds or cashews as they contain magnesium which would help the fat burning process.
• Capsaicin, a compound found in chili peppers, is said to boost the sympathetic nervous system and spikes metabolism by 23 %. • Start fighting fat with fiber. Aim for 25 grams of fiber which includes fruits and vegetables that would boost your metabolism and increase your body’s capacity to burn fat by 30%. • Don’t forget to add shellfish and spinach to your diet so you can fill up those iron stores which help carry oxygen and boost your metabolism. • The intake of vitamin D is important for preserving the muscle tissue. Vitamin D is found in Salmon, tuna, and eggs. • Stay hydrated because if you are not, the body may be burning up 2% fewer calories. • Vitamin C in oranges has the ability to oxidize body fat, hence reducing the waistline. • Stock up on those apples as they contain pectin which helps in limiting the absorbance of fat in the cells. It also binds with water and causes fat cells to release fat deposits.
Lunch: Tuna salad (excluding corn and olives), add flax seed (handful) Or 150 grams of brown rice (uncooked) with cooked spinach Or 250 grams of quinoa with 200 grams of grilled chicken.
Snack: Yoghurt with two spoons of wheat germ.
Dinner: 120 grams of chicken (grilled/roasted/boiled/stirfried) with one mug of vegetable or chicken soup.
Tips: • The vegetable soup should exclude peas and potatoes. • Drink at least eight glasses of water a day.
And what kind of exercise would help with the fat burning process? Interval training would be the best form for fat burning as it increases the heart rate and then decreases it. A daily routine of five minutes of jogging followed by two minutes of brisk walking then jogging again changes the way the body burns fat, has positive effect on the immune system and is not time consuming. Love & Relationships
Keep it Thriving
I
f you are part of a long relationship or marriage, then you have most probably been subjected to boredom, frustration, coldness, and lack of interest. When these feelings appear in a relationship, the involved parties either choose to continue or to stop. However, those who continue make a huge mistake if their decision is made only for the sake of keeping their relationships surviving. In fact, their target should not only be keeping their relationships alive, but also reviving them and taking them to a higher thriving level.
Maud Purcell, psychotherapist and Founder and Executive Director of The Life Solution Center of Darien, provides the following points to help spot warning signs that your relationship needs revival. These signs include: • Feelings of chronic resentment toward your spouse 72 | January 2014
• Lack of laughter between the two of you • Desire to spend free time with someone other than your mate • Too much time spent playing the “blame game” • Conversations between you are laced with bitterness and sarcasm
According to Ben (C) Fletcher, Professor of Occupational and Health Psychology at the University of Hertfordshire in the UK, it often happens that people attempt to revive their relationships by trying to change their partner’s behavior. However, this strategy usually fails because trying to force another to change will meet with resistance. When people are criticised for their behavior, they often feel hurt and naturally want to defend the way they are. In fact, it is likely to damage the relationship even further. So, in Dr. Fletcher’s opinion, you can do something different. You can change yourself. That’s right; if you want someone else to change, start by being different yourself. Because when you persist with the same behaviors, you get the same reactions. So continuing to behave the same in a relationship that needs shaking up will simply produce more of the same. Dr. Fletcher devised what is called Do Something Different approach that encourages people to be the type of partner they want the other to be. If you want more affection, be more affectionate. If you want the other to notice you more, start noticing them more. Approaching the subject from a different perspective, John Gottman, a Professor Emeritus of psychology at the University of Washington and known for his work on marital stability and relationship analysis, conducted research that showed that successful marriages are characterized by a positive sentiment override, which allows couples to give each other the benefit of the doubt, accept repair efforts in the midst of a fight and even bring in humor when discussing a gridlocked issue. On the other hand, if someone is in negative sentiment override, they appear to have a chip on their shoulder, are often unwilling to accept repair efforts, and generally behave as if their partner is an enemy rather than an ally.
includes knowing basic things, such as who your partner’s friends are, how s/he like their coffee, their favorite movies, etc. You also can know the nature of each other’s hopes and dreams, your greatest accomplishments and greatest disappointments or traumas, how these experiences have affected your lives, and what life goals you have yet to realize. Fondness and admiration. Some glimmer of fondness and admiration is essential if a relationship is to survive; there must be a sense at the deepest level that the other is worthy of being respected and liked. Just as a child needs to see the glimmer in the mother’s eyes, we need to feel, cherish and express our fondness and respect for each other. And because fondness and admiration is an antidote for contempt, it also shields our relationship from the most destructive, negative forces. Turning towards each other instead of away. A person is “turning toward” when they respond to and accept the “bids” that the other person makes for their attention, support or affection. By turning toward rather than away, a person is investing in an “emotional bank account.” This provides extra goodwill, a kind of “emotional savings,” money in the bank that is available in difficult times. Turning toward can be as simple as responding to a question, laughing at a joke, inquiring further about a hard day your spouse had, or finding a way to show that you enjoy your partner’s interests, even if they are different from yours. It is often about the little things that you do for each other on a day-to-day, minute by minute basis.
The strength of a couple’s friendship is what creates positive sentiment override, and the quality of this “friendship” is the best predictor of how couples manage conflict over the longer term. Gottman identified three principles that, taken together, determine whether a couple is in positive sentiment override. These principles are the basis of the friendship foundation: Love maps. “Love maps” refers to how well you really know and understand each other; being intimately familiar with each other’s world. Mother & Child
Time Out Mothers!
W
hen we’re stressed and tired, we become easily irritable and our nervousness is then reflected upon the persons we deal with while we’re in that state of agitation. So while you -mothers- might think that you’re doing your kids a favor by pushing yourself so hard and dedicating all your time to them, you are wrong. There is a certain point of exhaustion and tension that when reached will make you explode, and the first ones to be affected with your angry outburst will be your kids. Every mother should make time for herself to feel refreshed and be ready for positive parenting and good days. Parenting is hard work, and don’t let anyone try to tell you otherwise. Everyone needs a break from hard work now and again. When you come back from your break, you likely will be better prepared to take on the challenges of parenting. What does a break really mean? It means different things for different people, and often different things at different times for the same people. Sometimes, you just need an hour in your own head, whether it’s spent wandering in the mall or even the grocery store. Other times, a longer break is needed. It could mean a day all to yourself. If your children are fortunate to have active, able and involved grandparents, by all means, take advantage of that. Whether it’s for a full day or even overnight, whether it’s with your hubby or not, time away can be fun and rewarding for everyone. In order to give, you must make sure that you are replenished. Giving yourself a break does not necessarily require you to be a bad mother who allocates all her time to herself while neglecting her kids and not fulfilling her motherhood duties. Break ideas are endless; how to spend your break is up to you and depends on your circumstances and preferences. A break can be as simple as reading a book, chatting with your friend on the phone or even having a bubble bath. When you have your me-time, your life and that of your family can change 180 degrees. Your family is going to be the direct benefactor of you taking time to reflex, refuel and renew consistently. Your time out will be reflected not only on your relationship with your kids but also with your husband. When you are more relaxed and take some time to take care of your appearance, he will definitely be happier than before. 74 | January 2014

Open a Pomegranate to know the Color of January Birthstone BY: NIVINE MUKHTAR
January birthstone is a wonderful warm red color stone called garnet. Garnet is one of the oldest gemstones known to man as it had been known from thousands of years ago. Archaeologists have found garnets in burial sites, as it was believed that it protects the dead in their journey to the afterlife, dating back to 3000 BC and is also a proof of the hardness and durability of this gemstone. The word garnet is derived either from the Latin word “Granatus” meaning seed or from the Latin word “Granatum,” which means pomegranate since the most common color of garnet is red, which resembles the seeds of pomegranate. There are many myths and legends surrounding garnet. It is said that Noah used a garnet lantern to help him steer his ark safely through the darkness of the night in the flood. In ancient Asia, garnets were used as bullets because they believed it would cause severe wounds than those caused by bullets. This gemstone was carried by travelers to protect them from accidents while they were far away from home. Wearing garnet jewelry is believed to cure depression and to stimulate success in business. Garnet is also known as a gift of love since ancient Greek time. Although most garnets are red in color, other colors are available like orange, yellow, black, purple, brown, pink, green and colorless. They can also be found in pure blue, but this is very rare. Africa is the world’s main producer of garnet. Other sources of garnet are India, Australia, Brazil, Russia and the United States. In December 1996, a student in central Australia discovered what is thought to be the largest single garnet ever found measuring nearly 100 feet across! The wonderful thing about garnets is that they are in most cases one of the most affordable gemstones in the world. The red varieties are plentiful and inexpensive.

Capricorn Fashion Sense The fashion sense of a Capricorn is stylish and sophisticated. It’s very common for them to sport blazers, jackets, and suits. When you see a Capricorn, you will probably think: sophisticated business woman. Capricorns give off a more serious vibe. They like dark colors like brown, navy blue, dark grey and black. They love to be comfortable, and they usually choose comfort over style. Capricorn Hairstyle Because the typical Capricorn girl will be a confident authoritarian, her hairstyle will speak volumes. If she chooses to dye it a red color, people will love that about her and it will essentially make her more attractive as well. A reddish-brown hair color can actually bring out her personality to new levels and means. It will make her seem fresh, nice, and happy. Red adds a level of sophistication and spontaneity, something that does not always work for these serious Capricorn girls. What’s it like to date a Capricorn woman Deep inside, she is romantic and loving but it takes the right man to expose this. On the outside, she may seem like she does not care much for love. The Capricorn woman is perfect for the man who likes a challenge. It will take time to get closer to her, never make her rush into a relationship. She will offer you a long lasting, real, loyal relationship with all the right ingredients for happiness. What’s it like to date a Capricorn man The Capricorn man is very physical and passionate, but not emotional (on the outside). Deep inside he yearns for love but this takes a long time to become reality, he is very reluctant to place trust in another person. Show him how much you admire him and earn trust gradually over time. Patience and trust is key with a Capricorn man, he has so much to offer the right woman who will wait for him. Capricorn Erogenous Zone The legs and especially the knees are very sensitive. Lightly tickle the backs of Capricorn’s knees and this will get them giggling with excitement and initiate foreplay.
