Waves
A
s I sat by the seashore staring at the beach, enjoying the warmth of the sun and the swiftness of the breeze, a mini wave traveled my way and curled at the tip of my toes, causing a slight tickle in my body. And as I witnessed the wave disappear and dissolve in the sand, without disturbance or further notice, a thought hit me; how can something be so turbulent at times, yet very fragile at other times? And while I wandered about the roughness and delicacy of the waves, I was reminded of life, its problems and worries and how they can seem simultaneously hefty and trivial. The different types of waves are similar to life’s difficulties. Some waves have long wavelengths and rarely result in any damage as their height is generally few inches. Some are long, powerful and travel great distance. Some are destructive; extremely powerful that they drag objects into the sea. And others such as tsunamis, have significant height and are known to be very dangerous and devastating, to an extent of destroying a whole country. It’s true that waves can take over some seas, but they wouldn’t appear beautifully magical if it weren’t for them, scattering on the sand and striking against the cliff face. And just as waves form part of the sea, your worries and problems shape part of your life as well, never all of it, although they have the ability, just like waves, to wreck a whole soul. Just like waves, they can push you down and make you fall on your face, but with a wave after the other, you learn to jump over it, you master it. There will come other waves, new ones, where you’ll have to master them all over again; however, troublesome is only present to strengthen your soul for harder waves that need endurance. Hereafter, I hope that the waves that drown you today will teach you how to surf tomorrow. Do not fear the wave, but always keep your nose above the water where you can breathe. I hope that you don’t get used to the salty water in your mouth, but rather know that it demolishes, the taste fades if you’re strong enough to swallow it with pride and know that the changing patterns of the tides lead you to your faultless destiny.

Dare To Wear!
Incorporating your Bikini into your Wardrobe
D
o you have the audacity to go an extra mile with your wardrobe this summer? If so, here’s a little dare for you to prove it. Hint: you will have to keep your bikini dry for this one. The common view is that bikinis are meant to be worn for a swim in the sea, or for a little bit of tanning on the beach, but we believe that these days, bikinis looks too good and pricy for just that! AND it’s all about the “see-through” fabrics this season. So here is your dare: take your bikini out of the sea, and incorporate it into your summer attire.

MARKS & SPENCER’S ‘London Calling’ is Back with its Second Season
M
arks & Spencer has released the 2nd season of its web-based mini-series titled ‘London Calling’. Last year in December, M&S has ventured outside the confines of traditional customer engagement channels by introducing London Calling, the regional first ‘dramedy’ mini-series. The series has a total of eight short web episodes; each episode lasting for maximum three minutes. The dialogues are crisp and simple. Featured exclusively online on Youtube in Arabic with English subtitles, this unconventional approach aimed to reach out to the local Arab customer through the digital space to build awareness and engagement in an original and inspiring style. While the actresses are outfitted in Marks & Spencer fashion, the online series is more about providing the viewer with true entertainment that they can very easily relate to. Apart from the beautiful clothes, and M&S innovations touched upon in the stories (such as machine washable suits, drop a size dress, etc.), these three women manage to hold on to their closeness as an Arab family. It’s an entertaining journey of emotions and experiences, as they try to stick to their choices and understand the struggles of life. Despite being considerably softer in its approach, the series engrosses its audience in the lives of these three Arab women; an ambitious daughter, the
traditional sister, and the caring mother all living apart yet sharing the bond of love and compassion. This debut drama series centers upon Hala, a trendy young woman living in London who aspires to be a fashion designer. She connects weekly over online video chat with her sister Shereen in Dubai and her mother Mona in Lebanon. With the action unfolding on the screen in a format similar to online video chat, viewers are immersed, while able to listen in as the family discusses their weekly updates. The concept echoes the very lives of the people it is meant to entertain. In the Middle East as well as across the world, previous traditional household interactions are now done over electronic devices and video chat. Season two revolves around one main big event, Shereen becoming a mother in her first days. She is bestowed with love by her family members and is extremely happy in the first part of the season. Shereen’s life revolves around the new unnamed baby, her mother in law and husband Karim. She starts feeling agitated, as her baby is not named yet because of the disagreement between the two families. As the story unfolds, Shereen is overwhelmed with motherhood responsibilities, while Hala is upto her love adventures with her new boyfriend Marco and is trying to keep her love life private and the identity of the person that she’s currently dating from her Mom Mona.

STAY COOL IN SUMMER LAYERS
T
by: Maha Abdel-Latif
hink that you can only layer pieces in the cold Winter months to create a unique ensemble? Well, think again!
Perhaps the people at J-Crew knew best when telling their employees to always follow the “3 piece rule.” At the well-known store, employees are required to incorporate a third article of clothing in addition to their top and bottom – no matter the season. Whatever this third piece is (a simple accessory, even), it is meant to give the overall
1
look a sense of being well put-together, rather than being too casual or dull. And who are we to argue with one of the biggest fashion retailers in the world? Adding just one piece to a simple outfit can indeed make all the difference! And while layering is usually thought of as a coldweather-only concept, it’s a method that can be transitioned into the warm Summer months for an equally-chic (and equally-comfortable) Summer style. Let’s take a look at some of the many ways you can pull off the layered-look in Summer, shall we?
MARY KATRANTZOU
THE DENIM VEST/JACKET One of my all-time-favorite ways to layer in the warmer months is by pairing a summer dress with a denim vest. This instantly adds a fun, edgy element to your feminine look – a combination that will certainly turn heads. And why limit this to summer dresses? Try pairing your denim vest or distressed denim jacket with a simple top and watch your look go from boring to trendy in 5 seconds flat.

THE KIMONO One of the trendiest summer layering go-to this season is the lightweight kimono-style jacket. Ultra-feminine, comfortable and chic, this is a piece every girl should certainly have, at least one in her closet this season. The best part of this trend is that it is generally worn in lightweight fabrics with movement – think silk and chiffon. This will surely help keep you cool in that scorching Summer heat. Elegant, simple and lightweight? I’ll take one in every pattern.
3 4
THE TAILORED VEST Tailored vests are the perfect way to give off a polished look in the warm season without melting away in that summer heat. Pair your tailored vest with a casual t-shirt for a night on the town or with a skirt and wellfitted top to give off a professional vibe for a day in the office. You can (almost) never really go wrong with layering a tailored vest.
THE CLASSIC BLAZER
MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA
Last, but not least, is the classic blazer. Fashionable year-round, the blazer is the perfect way to finish off almost any outfit. Give your outfit that extra pop by throwing on a statement blazer in either a bright, Summer color or a flirty floral print. Just remember to look for blazers in lightweight fabrics that have a lot of movement to them – always opt for materials that will keep you feeling cool in that Cairo heat. Take it from the always-trendy Olivia Palermo on wearing silk blazers: "It's great for the Summer because it's light, but still has structure and doesn't lose its shape."
Victoria Beckham
Say goodbye to the common myth of only being able to layer in cold Winter months. Use these tips to create your own unique ensembles and still stay cool this summer. And don’t forget to share your summer layering tips on TheCairoCloset.com!

TANNING the Right Way Better Safe than Sorry BY: NOHA KANDIL
T
anning has evolved to become a phenomenon, especially recently here in Egypt. It’s no longer about you wanting to get a tan just for the sake of it, but it has rather become a way to fit in a certain social frame. Along the years, various tanning methods have surfaced, from the traditional sun-tanning oils to tanning beds, and finally the self-tanners; all have their pros and cons. In the below lines we will help you to better understand the risk associated with tanning and guide you towards healthier ways to do it.
WHY IS IT RISKY? Sun Exposure: Sun tanning has been proven to be a very risky tanning method, keeping in mind that it’s the most common method of tanning as well. The problem with tanning in the sun is in over-exposure and underestimating its risk. Sitting for hours might give you the color you want, but it might also give you wrinkles, brown spots, dark hallows, sunburns, and - God forbids - skin cancer. Moreover, another major problem with suntan is in the tanning oil itself. Many people fall in the trap of choosing the wrong tanning oil, and don’t even check the components at the back of the bottle, which might include many dangerous chemicals that should not be applied on the skin. Also, the applying process is really important, as it determines whether you would get a tan, a burn, or maybe a mix of both. Unequal and random application of tanning oils can give you unfavorable results. 40 | June 2014
Tanning Beds/Tubes/Lamps: Indoor tanning basically is an alternative for those who don’t have time to go to the beach; it might be faster, but it’s certainly NOT safer in any way. You can get allergic reactions and damage your eyes. Furthermore, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation, 74% of tanners who depend on this method are more likely to develop skin cancer, as it also includes exposure to direct and more concentrated Ultraviolet (UV) rays. Due to its hazards, tanning beds have actually been banned in several countries around the world.
Tanning Pills and Accelerators: This method is the most controversial, and it’s the least common of them all. Tanning pills mainly depend on color additives that give your skin an orange-like color. The most common color additive used is beta-carotene, which is found in carrots. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not permitted the usage of such additives in tanning products, as noted by the American Cancer society, which is also the case for tanning accelerators that haven’t been approved as well. Accelerators are used to speed up the tanning process through amino acid and other hazardous chemicals.
And here are their top recommendations for you: • If you’re choosing the suntan, avoid midday. Early morning, or near sunset is more safe. Midday you’ll probably have a burn not a tan. • Stay for half an hour or for a complete hour regularly. If you want to stay more than that make it gradual. • Beer, carrots and beet could speed up the tanning process, so you would end up staying less in the sun. • Applying sunblock before tanning oil is nonsense. You will end up sitting longer, because you won’t be getting any results due to the sunblock. • Apply tanning oils and self-tanners gently in one direction, and evenly on your skin. • Avoid tanning beds. They are no good! • Know your skin type. Most of us Egyptians are type 4 or 5; we naturally have white/brown skin, which means that we are less likely to have sunburns. But that doesn’t mean we’re UV-immune. We also don’t easily go back to the normal color after tanning. It may last up to a year! • Always go back to your doctor. What works with your friends might not work for you; you might have more sensitive skin than them. And same concept applies to pharmacist.
SELF-TANNERS; FINALLY A SAFE WAY! Say goodbye to UV rays, refund that tanning-bed session receipt, and throw away those pills! Selftanners are finally here, and now you can get the tan you want in a much safer way. Self-tanners come in the form of lotions and creams. All you have to do is to check the label; the most effective ingredient in self-tanners is dihydroxyacetone (DHA), so look for it when choosing your product, and go back to your dermatologist if you’re not sure. Apply it carefully and most importantly evenly. It’s fast, temporary and SAFE.
EXPERTS’ NOTES We were fortune enough to have access to Egypt’s top dermatologists at L’Oréal’s La Roche-Posay Launching event. Listening to what they have to say, it appears that there are two views regarding that subject. The first view is all about sun-protection, especially with the dusty and sunny whether we live in. That view adopts an anti-tanning approach that rejects the whole process. The second view, however, is somewhat more tolerant, in a way that acknowledges that tanning is fashionable, and thereby you won’t be able to prohibit it.

Beauty
Hair
A
summer spent at the beach and by the pool is one of the world’s utmost happinesses and pleasures, yet, it can be disastrous for your hair. Every time you go outdoors in Summer, your hair is exposed to the harsh sunrays. Most people know how to protect their skin during Summer by applying sunscreen, but very few people mind to protect their hair. Summer is a great time for fun and relaxation, but without awareness, it can also cause severe damage to your hair. As long as you take a few steps to protect your hair from the elements, you won’t find yourself needing to cut off your lovely locks when Summer ends. Too much exposure to heat and sunlight can leave your hair dry, dull and lifeless. However, I have complied few and simple, yet important steps, which you can take to protect your hair from the sun, chlorine and salty water.
Summer
WELCOME WITH A HAIR LOVING FEVER BY: AYAT SEIF EL NASR
COVER UP If you will be spending a long time in direct sunlight, then the best way to protect your hair is to keep it covered up. A headscarf, a baseball cap or any cute hat will do. Nevertheless, covering up your hair protects your scalp and the tops of your ears from being sunburned. 42 | June 2014
PROTECT If you don’t want to cover your hair, then treat it the same way you treat your skin; cover your hair in sunscreen. Yes, what you have read is right, hair sunscreen. If you have long hair, it is a good idea to pull your hair back into a braid or a cute messy bun and coat it in a layer of sunscreen. There are leave-in
conditioners, mousses, finishing sprays and beach sprays now that all contain UV filters to protect your hair. In Summer, I like to create my own hair protection serum and keep it in a spray bottle to carry with me whenever I go outside to spray on my hair. I mix equal parts of hair sunscreen and conditioner with a bit of water and a squirt of lemon juice. The sunscreen protects my hair and the conditioner makes it soft as the sun helps it soak in. The lemon juice adds natural looking highlights to my hair (If you have dark hair or do not want to add any highlights, you can just avoid using lemon juice).
CUT LOOSE SPLIT ENDS
HERE IS A LIST OF SOME OF THE BEST HAIR PRODUCTS I RECOMMEND:
bumble & bumble surf travel set
Make sure to frequently trim your ends to prevent split ends from traveling up the hair shaft and damaging your hair. Well-known hairstylists recommend scheduling a trim every four to six weeks to maintain both the cut and the health of your hair.
Garnier Sleek and Shine Moroccan Sleek Oil Treatment
HOW TO PROTECT YOUR HAIR AT THE POOL? The chlorine in swimming pools protects you from bacteria, but can wreak havoc on your hair. The best way to protect your hair is to rinse it off in fresh water as soon as you get out of the pool. Sometimes, after a Summer of swimming in pools, blonde hair starts to turn a bit green. In case that happens to you, do not freak out. Many brands sell chlorine removal shampoos that will bring back your hair’s normal shade. As effective antioxidants, they neutralize the free radicals, which increase in bright sunlight. Otherwise, these free radicals damage/ destroy cells. Moreover, there are many fruits rich in antioxidants, such as berries and grapes, and many vegetables, such as apricots, broccoli and spinach.

Faces of Egypt
Second part, “fuse,” is the technique used in making our products. When combined together they give the positive message of the brand as to refuse anything that could harm the environment. As for the slogan “guilt free fashion,” we find it perfectly matching to our concept as we produce products that are eco-friendly, so producing and wearing our products is indeed guiltfree.
REFUSE
A Hopeful Fashionable Initiative Yara Yassin and Rania Rafie, two young inspiring human beings sharing one passion and one responsibility; a passion for bettering our environment and a responsibility towards helping their community. With Yara’s dream of making Egypt an eco-friendly place, together with Rania’s minimalistic approach and design philosophy, they started an initiative under the name “Refuse, Guilt Free Fashion,” a sustainable fashion brand that turns plastic bags into fashionable products. And with the help of their very hardworking team, Omar El-kholefy, Randa El-Hussieny and Moustafa Abdel Kader, they believe they could go internationally five years from now, and export authentic Egyptian finished products abroad. “REFUSE, GUILT FREE FASHION,” IS MORE OF STRONG STATEMENT THAN JUST A BRAND. WHAT’S THE STORY BEHIND IT? The idea started about a year ago as a bachelor project when we were in Germany. The idea created some good buzz there, so we decided to take it to the next level. We wanted to create an identity that conveys the value of the brand so we came up with the name “REFUSE,” which is divided into two parts; the first part “RE” goes for reusable and recyclable, and the 46 | June 2014
WHEN IT COMES TO DESIGNING, THERE IS USUALLY THE COMMON PROCESS OF FINDING AN INSPIRATION, PUTTING TOGETHER A MOOD-BOARD, ETC. DO YOU FOLLOW THE SAME ROUTE AT REFUSE? As we are product designers, we go through this process by heart, but with REFUSE it’s a bit different. We first make prototypes in paper models in the smallest scale you can ever see. We add all the details on the paper and design the patterns. We honestly don’t use mood boards; plastic bags are always an inspiration. THE IDEA OF UPCYCLING IS NOT COMMON IN EGYPT, WHICH MEANS THAT THERE ISN’T SUFFICIENT LABOR FORCE FOR IT. HOW DO YOU HANDLE THAT? We actually teach people to upcycle, which is a very simple process. We mostly focus on stay at home women, and this is because we still don’t have a workstation, so they can work from home, and at the same time they could earn additional income. We have very talented women who help us collect and create the materials. One of them is a Syrian refugee that we are really glad she is part of our team. She also inspires us so much with her colors and patterns. SO FAR, YOUR CREATIONS MAINLY INCLUDE BAGS AND PHONE/LAPTOP COVERS. WOULD YOU BELIEVE THAT YOU COULD MAKE FUNCTIONAL WEARABLE CLOTHES ONE DAY OUT OF UPCYCLED PLASTIC BAGS? Why not! Fashion has no restrictions and in this field people are always looking for new ideas. Rain coats and
flip-flops could be done on spot, and it is possible one day to make an entire attire from plastic, but it would require a bit more research to check which material should be added to make the cloth comfy.
health and environment. That’s why we started the “I Refuse” campaign, and thankfully, we’ve been having more positive feedback, which gives us a push to go further.
WE KNOW THAT YOU DO WORKSHOPS AS WELL. DO YOU HAVE A CERTAIN TARGET IN MIND? The aim of us doing workshops is to create awareness about the environment and how throwing plastic bags can be harmful. Our workshops contain diversity in the participants’ categories. For instance, workshops at Ice Cairo and CILAS (Cairo institute of liberal arts and sciences) targeted highly educated people with participants having non-artistic backgrounds at all, so we wanted to help them explore their creative artistic side. Our workshop at Darb 1718 on the other hand, targeted people with humble backgrounds, so we wanted to teach them to create beautiful products to be sold and provide additional income for them. Also, we gave them a marketing session to help them in selling their products.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR MOST RECENT WORK? Well, our new summer collection is coming out very soon, and is going to be colorful carrying the summer spirit. This is basically what we’ve been working on in addition to the workshops of course.
EGYPTIANS DON’T WARM UP EASILY TO ANYTHING NEW OR DIFFERENT, HOW DO YOU DELIVER YOUR IDEA THROUGH TO YOUR TARGET SEGMENT? Yes that’s somewhat true, and it was one of the main challenges we faced. At refuse we target “the tree huggers;” the eco-friendly people with the hipster vibe, who are always looking to be different, which unfortunately is a very small segment here in Egypt. However, we’re aiming to attract more attention to refuse and promote more positive acts towards people’s

Embrace the Summer… Eliminate its Heat
W
e all dream about those short escapes to the beach, where we could enjoy a breeze of a fresh air, and relish the sun as it flirts with the waves of the sea. However, if there is one thing that we hate in summer, it would 50 | June 2014
be the heat. And apparently for those of us living in Egypt, the heat will be our worst enemy due to the daily power cuts. Unless you’re planning a whole-summerlong vacation, assuming that you can afford the time and the money, you’ll most probably have
to spend the majority of summer at the comfort of your home. The question here is, is your home really comfy for the summer? Well, if it isn’t, or in case you’re not sure, here are some ideas that would help you embrace the summer spirit and keep the heat away…
Go Lighter: Go lighter with fabrics. Replace your heavy winter bed sheets with lighter ones. Choose natural fibers like Egyptian cotton or silk, although silk could be a bit pricy. Also, having it patterned would give your room a new edge. Moreover, you don’t need rugs; removing unnecessary rugs and carpets would give your house a spacious sense that’s perfect for summer.>>
Precautionary Measures: As much as you might hate it, it’s time to have the annual checkup! And no, not for you, but for your air conditioner, refrigerator, fridge, and other machines that could literally turn your life to a bundle of overheated mess, if they broke down during summer. Start with your air conditioners. Do the necessary maintenance to make sure they are up for a heated summer, and don’t wait till it’s the peak of the season, because then you’ll have to wait weeks till they send you someone. The same applies for other appliances; you need to clean your fridge and have it ready for summer smoothies and popsicles. June 2014 | 51
Colors: Summer is all about brights as they give this cheerful “summery” feeling, so try to replace the dark shades of winters with brighter ones, or at least have a mix of both. Also, why don’t you add a little taste of fashion to your home? Let your guests know that you’re up to date with latest fashion trends and incorporate the radiant orchid, Pantone’s color of the year, into your house. That doesn’t mean that you would go on changing your wall paint, but you can at least have a glimpse of the color here and there. You can go small with coasters and dishes, a little bigger with a tableau for instance, or take a risk with a couch or puff. 52 | June 2014
Save energy: These days, every Egyptian should be looking for ways to save energy, and luckily, there’re several things that we can actually do. Start by eliminating the heat sources at you home. For instance, having a heat absorbing type of window that always let the sun in won’t help you much, and would always make you want the air conditioner on. So install window shades or drapes, so that it would eliminate some of the heat, as well as having sun-screen-fabric curtains. Furthermore, as hot as it may get, you don’t really need an air conditioner in every room. Try ceiling fans; nowadays there are various styles that would match your décor, give you a breeze of air, and most importantly save energy.
Flowers and Greenery: This one goes from the prints on your sheets and pillows, to having actual houseplants. Even if you’re not a fan, you have to admit that there is nothing better than flowers and the color green that scream summer. So it’s always good to add hints of flowers and greens to your home, it will definitely transmit the feeling of the outdoors into your house. June 2014 | 53

Refreshingly Stunning Waterfalls You’d Wish to Visit
Havasu Falls Located in the Grand Canyon, Arizona, beautiful Havasu falls are known for its vibrant blue water, which contrasts against the striking red rocks of the canyon walls. It plunges nearly 100 feet into a wide pool of blue-green waters. Calcium carbonate and magnesium occur naturally in the waters of Havasu Creek. The pools and natural dams form when the calcium carbonate precipitates out of the water and deposits onto rocks, branches, or manmade structures (after a devastating flood) building up over time. Havasu Falls and Havasu Creek get their blue color from the magnesium in the water. As the pools deepen and the calcium carbonate is slowly released from the water, the bluer the water appears as the relative magnesium content increases. The falls are accessible from several paths leading down to the refreshing waters, where you can gladly take a dip in the water.

Angel Falls The world’s highest waterfall, Angel Falls or Salto à ngel, dropping a total of 978 meter from the summit of the Auyan Tepuy, and with an 807 meter uninterrupted drop. Because the falls are located in an isolated jungle region of Venezuela, the only access to Canaima National Park, the gateway to Angel Falls, is by air. Angel Falls is located in the Guayana highlands, and it is just one of the five great adventure regions in Venezuela. Moreover, Angel falls is 15 times higher than Niagara falls with its total of approximately 52 meters. Enjoy this privileged place with the spectacular scenery in the Laguna de Canaima, with beautiful waterfalls, inviting you to swim and provoking you with its beautiful white sandy beaches surrounding the lagoon. This unique place gives you the opportunity to integrate with nature in a direct and real way.
Plitvice Falls The Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia has sixteen lakes, where it is inter-connected by a beautiful series of waterfalls. They are separated by natural dams of travertine, which is deposited by the action of moss, and algae. Nevertheless, what makes the waterfalls there breathtaking are the renowned distinctive colors of the lakes that range from azure to green, grey or blue and change constantly depending on the quantity of minerals or organisms in the water and the angle of sunlight. Besides that, the Plitvice Lakes National Park is heavily forested and features a mixture of Alpine and Mediterranean vegetation. >>

Niagara Falls These falls has been for years one of the major tourists attraction, putting it on the bucket list of many out there. Niagara falls are categorized by three different names: American falls, Bridal Veil falls and Horseshoe falls. The Horseshoe Falls drop about 173 feet (53 m), while the height of the American Falls varies between 70–100 feet (21–30 m). The larger Horseshoe Falls are about 2,600 feet (790 m) wide, while the American Falls are 1,060 feet (320 m) wide. Twenty percent of the world’s freshwater lies in the Great Lakes, and most flows over Niagara falls. Becareful if you plan on going over the fall as several tries; however, only a few survived.
Milla Milla Falls Milla Milla village is the ultimate getaway to the Southern Tablelands. The town is situated in emerald hills surrounded by farms and a circuit of waterfalls. Milla Milla falls are one of the magnificent falls over there located on the Waterfalls Circuit, along with Zillie and Ellinjaa Falls. The falls cascade perfectly to a pristine waterhole below, where you can enjoy a refreshing swim in the cool water. There’s also a lovely grassy picnic area for you to relax. Make sure you bring your camera, as the stunning landscape and scenery must be cherished forever.

Detian Falls The Detian falls is situated on the border between China and Vietnam, making it Asia’s largest transnational waterfall. It is considered an attraction that is shared by both. Therefore, whether you visit China or Vietnam, you will still be able to enjoy the falls. The surroundings have rich greens because of the myriad of plants and flowers that grow around the place, which makes the walk towards the top of the Detian waterfall worth it. Moreover, the Detian waterfall can be divided into two different sections. The main waterfall is named as the Detian Waterfall. This section is situated mostly on the Chinese part in terms of geography. On the other hand, there is also the second part of this tourist destination, which is called the Ban Gioc waterfall or Banyue waterfall, where it is found in between Vietnam and China. The beauty of this place is overpowering. It is not just a linear water formation. It looks more like a merging of several smaller waterfalls. June 2014 | 57

Dr. John T. Chiu
Allergy and Immunology
Have had these dry itchy bumps all over. I changed shampoo, and substituted my skin care products, yet, no change. It’s worse on my hands and stomach. What could it be? Doctor’s Answer:
It’s better to visit your dermatologist. You may need a skin biopsy to find out, especially when the rash has failed to respond to hydrocortisone cream and Benadryl.

Would washing my vegetables in hot water reduce my chances of getting a bacterial infection? Doctor’s Answer:
Water would need to be very hot to kill bacteria. It would be too hot to handle safely and comfortably. Thorough washing will reduce but not eliminate the chance of getting bacterial infection, if the vegetable is contaminated.

Dr. Marsha F. Davis Internal Medicine
I woke up and out of nowhere there is a huge red spot in the white of my eye. No pain and can see normal. Should I be concerned?
I’ve had jaw pain on the right side right below my ear whenever I open my mouth wide, not when I clench my teeth. It’s getting more painful; what is it?
Doctor’s Answer:
Doctor’s Answer:
This sounds like a sub conjunctival hemorrhage, a broken blood vessel underneath the thin transparent membrane over the white of the eye. It will not cause any permanent problem and will go away by itself in 2-3 weeks. You should have it checked by your doctor though; just to be sure this is what it is.

Should I be worried if my baby shakes his leg in his sleep? Doctor’s Answer: If no other symptoms except shaking of legs during sleep only, then not to worry much. Anemia can be one of the causes. Make sure temperature in the room is not too high (in winter- keep 70 F day, 68 F night). Toddlers can have growing pain causing leg movements with sleep disturbance. Talk to his pediatrician during next visit, he might check Hemoglobin after an exam.

Why does my right hand keep going numb? Doctor’s Answer:
It certainly could be carpal tunnel syndrome, a pinched nerve in your wrist, which makes your fingers go numb. See a Hand Surgeon for an examination and treatment.

What’s a good alternative exercise to weight training?
What do you think of the MatchMatchy trend this season?
Doctor’s Answer:
Expert’s Answer:
One good option is isotonic exercise (pushing against a closed door). Any exercise specialist can give you more info on this or get a book at the library. Also, swimming is another good option.
I’ve just sort of come around to the whole matching-top-and-bottom concept, and I love it. The great thing about having two pieces instead of one (like a dress) is that you can really define your waist, which I always feel is important. Everybody wants a waist, right? and it works with both prints and solids.

Summer Myths:
The
Truth Shall Be PREVAILED
I 60 | June 2014
t’s summer, and it’s time to have some fun! Whether you’re the laidback type, the partying guru, or whether you choose to refresh through frequent quick escapes to the beach, you deserve to disconnect from your hectic routine for a little while. Summer has always been a welcoming season for some unwinding; however, we’re often so busy unwinding that we tend to ignore our safety. Along the many summers, various misconceptions and myths have arisen, like using butter as a sunburn remedy, using seawater as an antiseptic, and much more. So we decided to help you out this summer, and shed light on the most common myths of the summer so that you can avoid them.
“Incase of jellyfish sting, make a friend urinate on it;” we believe this is the most iconic myth of all time, and it probably gained a big part of its popularity from the TV series “Friends.” The truth is that urinating is not and will never be a good treatment for jellyfish wound, or anything else for all that matter, and it might actually cause some serious complications to the wound. Doctors rather recommend using white vinegar to relief the pain, after removing the remains of a jellyfish gently, and trying to avoid putting fresh water on it.
WHAT?! The air-conditioning was on! You’re doomed… This one has been told by almost every mother out there. The misconception of that you’ll catch a flu because of air-conditioning, and going in and out of it, has to be finally put to rest. Doctors and experts have said their verdict, your Ac is NOT guilty of giving you the flu; your allergy, however, might be the prime suspect. People with allergies and sinus infections might be more prone to catching cold and flu, due to summer heat waves and high humidity, which is a perfect environment for viruses to grow. Also, in some cases, if your Ac’s filters are not cleaned it may trigger allergies.
Tanning DOES NOT make you sunproofed This is a real smarty! Some women believe that if they start their tanning process ahead of time, and have what’s called a “tan base,” in a tanning bed before hitting the beach, would give them some sort of “magical” protective layer that serves as a shield against sunburn. Again, not exactly true. Although some type of skins are less sensitive and might be more sun-tolerant than others, and no not according to your color, the majority of doctors agree that being directly exposed to the UV rays of sun for a long duration will always be harmful regardless what you do. Bottom line, having sunburn could be inevitable no matter how many tan bases you get.
I need butter for my sunburn Unless you’re craving butter and using your sunburn as an excuse to get some, this is nonsense. Butter has no healing effect on sunburn, and incase of inflammation, it might make it worse. Crushed ice
with milk might get the job done, and for more extreme cases it would be much better to visit a dermatologist to get the right healing anti-inflammatory lotion/ cream.
I appeal to mosquitos because I taste better than you! Now this is your ego talking. How intriguing is the fact that we’re in the 21st century, and some people still think that their skin/blood is a little more sugary than others? We, humans, are very fond of ourselves. Guess what? Also, not true! It’s not your tasty skin, but it could be your blood type. It has been reportedly argued that people with blood type O are more subjected to mosquito bites, because they have more distinctive scent than others (Lucky them!). Yet, it all boils down to the usual protective measures against all sorts of insects. If you’re in an area known for a lot of mosquitos, install a net fly screen and make sure they stay closed. Also, use repellants and if you can bear the whether, try to wear long sleeves.
“Saltwater is the best remedy for open wounds,” said no doctor ever In addition to the fact that it will cause you burning pain due to the salt, saltwater is not a replacement for disinfectants. Seawater may actually increase your infection. Think about it for a minute, God only knows the types of organisms that exist there, in addition to sand particles, and those tiny stones and rocks, etc. So next time you get wounded on the beach– God Forbids – just clean it with a tap water temporarily, till you have access to a real disinfectant and a bandage to cover it up for healing.
“
Ah, summer, what power you have to make us suffer and like it.
“
DO NOT, under any circumstances, let anyone urinate on you. EVER!

Soft Surface‌ Hard Work Working out in the sand yields surprising benefits
B
y its very nature, sand is constantly shifting and changing. This demands effort from various muscles in the body that might not normally engage on a pavement or gym floor workout. Moreover, the sand is on different levels, and you have to adjust to that difference, which brings a new element to posture. In addition, running in the sand is also kinder to the joints than running on pavements, because there is less impact on the body.
But the best part is that the sand requires your body to move through a full range of motion, which stretches your muscles more than exercising on the pavement. On average, and for running in particular, the body will burn up to 1.6 times as many calories for the extra effort! As such, you could technically halve the amount of your regular workout and still get the same affect. But be careful to start slow, especially if you’re new to this very specific environment. Indeed, you will need to build muscles to exercise safely. 62 | June 2014
There is a number of health benefits associated with exercising on sand. So, here are 10 things to consider when you decide to exercise on the sand: 1) Wear good shoes: Although the feeling of the warm sand between your toes can be pleasant and remind you of summer holiday, you should exercise with proper sports shoes. Your feet need support, especially if you plan on working out for an extended period of time. In addition, staying bear foot may cause blisters or small cuts from shells and glass. 2) Protect your ankles: Because sand is mobile by nature, it does not provide natural support and stability. This is precisely what makes the workout more effective. However, loss of balance may result in inadequate attempt to stabilize on one foot, which, in turns, may result in sprained ankles or even knees. As such, make sure to develop your footstep completely, mind your step and wear straps, if necessary. 3) Protect your eyes: As you walk or run, you will shuffle sand around. Grains being small and volatile, they can easily get into your eyes. These may cause tearing, scratching and even infections. Try to wear glasses (prescription or sun) and or rinse with natural tears when discomfort occurs. 4) Beware of the sun and the heat: As any form of exercise in the outdoors, you will be exposed to the weather. As such, protect your skin by wearing light UV-protecting fabric and use sunscreen. More importantly, wear a hat or a cap. Heat strokes are very dangerous conditions that should not be taken lightly. Be smart. Avoid the hottest hours and listen to your body. Remember that even when covered in clouds, sun rays can reach you and remain damaging to the skin. 5) Stay hydrated: The sun and the dry salted air exacerbate dehydration. Not only does it decrease physical capacities, but it imposes considerable stress to your body and alter its proper functioning. To avoid endangering your health, drink frequently (before, during and after exercising) and enough, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Once again, be smart. 6) Warm up and Cool down: This is essential for preventing strains and sprains. Don’t skip it! You can follow your usual routine but stress on ankle and knee
flexibility more than usual; these are the body parts that will be the most at risk. 7) Adapt the pace: Exercising on soft surfaces is more difficult and you will need more energy for the same moves. On the plus side, it means that you will burn more calories, faster. On the minus side, you will be tired faster as well. Don’t expect to have the same performance on the sand and on the road. Set an entire new reference. This will require adapting your pace and slowing down. Remember that it is more effective to maintain a slower pace longer than to overexert for short spans. 8) Adapt the frequency: The requirement to the muscles is much more important in the sand. As such, time needed for full recovery will be longer. The best would be to alternate sand workout and other forms of workouts. Ideally, other forms of workout that uses different groups of muscles. Make your workouts complementary. Water workouts may be an appropriate alternative and the chance is that next to the sand, you will find the sea! Also, there is a difference between soft and hard-packed sand (closer to the water). Try alternating these surfaces, as the hard-packed sand is easier to work on. 9) Mind the ground level (change the direction): Beaches tend to slope downhill towards the sea. This means that the ground is both unstable and unlevelled. As such, when exercising in one direction, one leg will bear more weight than the other. Make sure to divide your workout into two, the other half in the other direction. 10) Stretch: There is an increased risk of pulling a muscle while exercising in loose sand. It is particularly important to keep them flexible. Make sure to stretch after working out. You can follow your usual stretching routine but make it slightly longer to compensate for the extra effort. As a beginner, start by the shoreline where the sand is flat and packed down. Then, as you get more comfortable, you can mix up your run by moving into the softer sand for a minute—almost like doing an interval workout—and then moving back into the harder sand. Be progressive and enjoy! You will never see the beach the same way again. Indeed, any environment can become a playground for those who are willing to see it. June 2014 | 63

Cardio
is FUN with Jumping Rope BY: SAMIRA KHALIL
W
hat fitness equipment is light, small in size, can be used by anyone at any age, improves your cardiovascular fitness, heart, lung health and can burn some serious calories off in no time? The answer is Jumping rope. Few years ago I thought that jumping rope is only for kids and it is not necessary to add it to my training circuits. Up until I saw athletes jumping rope professionally, I started searching on the techniques and how to master rope skipping. It took me quite some time tripping over the rope. By constantly persisting and following the plan, I am now able to do around 1000 counts in less than 15 minutes. Jumping rope adds spice to my workout besides it’s a lot of FUN!
Jumping Rope Benefits for YOU! • Melts fat fast and burns tons of calories in the most efficient way. • According to the British Rope Skipping Association, 10 minutes of skipping can have the same health benefits as a 45-minute run. • Improves your coordination and cardiovascular fitness. • Improves heart rate and regulates blood pressure.
In the End, get out of your comfort zone and try something new that your body is not used to it. Breaking your workout routine is essential before you experience training plateaus, where you’ll notice a dramatic decrease in the results of your workouts by doing it over and over again.
Before you Jump in-Checklist If you are new to jumping rope, you are probably afraid that jumping rope might be tough and exhausting. However, if done properly, jumping rope is considered as a low impact exercise. • Look straight ahead with straight posture. • Put your weight on the balls of your feet. • Start without the rope by jumping 1 inch off the ground while making small circles with your wrist. • Land softly.
Feeling confident with your jumps? Let’s take it to the next level and start using the rope. In addition to the above checklist, add the following: • Jump on both feet 1 inch off the ground while landing on the balls of your feet. • Turn the rope, make 2 inch circles with your wrists. • Maintain your elbow joints at a 45-degree angle. **Don’t let your heels touch the ground. Firstly, focus on one jump at a time. Once you are good at it, increase to 5 Counts. As you become more and more confident, keep adding jumps until you reach 100 jumps without tripping. To reach the 100 jumps, practice at least five times a week. Don’t rush on improving speed or counts. Focus on having a good technique foundation that will help you later on do more than the basic jumping rope (Such as alternate foot step, Double unders,…etc ). And if you are already good at jumping rope, take it to another level by sandwiching jumping rope with other strength and endurance exercises. According to the US Olympic committee and the American College of Sports Medicine, jumping rope is highly recommended to improve your health and lung function. “ACSM recommends jumping rope for three to five times weekly for sessions lasting from 20 to 60 minutes, depending on your level of fitness. Foods for soothing sunburn.
Fix with Food
Potato’s starchy compounds will help take the sting out of sunburn. Cut a raw potato into slices and rub a piece on your most painful sunburned spots. For a more intensive treatment, grate a cold raw potato and apply it as a poultice. Green tea’s compounds help protect against the sun as well. Studies suggest drinking just two cups a day could help provide a bit of added sun protection. For the best type of relief, Grind up a cup of oatmeal in a food processor, add it to cool bathwater, and soak. You can also wrap dry oatmeal in cheesecloth or gauze, run cool water through it, and then toss the oatmeal and soak compresses in the liquid, applying every 2 to 4 hours.

Get to Know your
U
Body Type BY: NOURA HASSABALLA
nderstanding your body type is crucial for you to know; so you can start planning your training and diet regimen. You have probably heard of the three main body types: Ectomorph, Endomorph and Mesomorph. You have also heard of Pear shape, Apple shape and Box shape body types; but do you ever wonder what they mean? Post reading this article, you will have a vivid picture of what each one of these names I mentioned above mean; then you’ll be able to notify which category you fall under.
Ectomorph Ectomorphs are typically skinny. They are lightly built, with small joints and lean muscles. They have long thin limbs with stringy muscles. Shoulders tend to be thin with little width. Due to their high metabolism, they find it very hard to gain weight, not matter what they eat. Because they have light fat, bone and muscle, this puts them on the scale of small frames. Known for fast metabolism, which burns up calories very quickly, ectomorphs need a huge amount of calories in order to gain weight. Workouts should be short and intense; focusing on big muscle groups. Supplements are definitely recommended (e.g. whey protein). Ectomorphs should eat before bed time to prevent muscle catabolism during the night; casein proteins are one of their many options.
Mesomoroph Mesomorphs are the best body type. Their bodies are more flexible with weight gain and loss. They have large bone structure, large muscles and have a naturally athletic physique. Because mesomorphs can respond to weight training easily and see fast results, they have to watch their calorie intake, since it’s easier for them to gain fats than ecotomorphs. Usually, weight training and cardio exercise are their best bet to stay in a good shape.
Endomorph They are the complete opposites of ectomorphs. They are larger in appearance with a round physique, accumulate more fats and have a slight muscle definition. Endomorphs find it very hard to lose weight even though they try several diet plans. For endomorphs to sustain weight loss they must focus on intensive cardio exercises as well as some weight training; not to bulk up, but to achieve some muscle definition. Watching their calorie intake and the type of food they eat is very important as well as consuming complex carbs and staying away from all processed foods. Supplements are not needed since they can build muscles through their normal intake of lean proteins. 68 | June 2014
Apple Shape Apples carry more fats around their torso and arms, but generally have a slim lower body. It’s easier for an apple-shaped person to drop the weight than a pear-shaped does, because abdominal fats break down faster than the fats stored in the butt and thigh. People with belly fat can face big health threats including an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes and breast cancer. Their diet should consist of low glycemic foods that don’t spike their blood sugar. Egg plants could be a replacement for pasta; lentils and lean proteins are also a great choice for them. High intensity cardio and resistance training will help those folks shed fats especially around the belly area. Weight lifting for the lower body will also strengthen thigh muscles and make the body look proportional.
Box Shape Someone with a box-shaped body may suffer from low thyroid hormone (hypothyroidism), which leads to weight gain. Those who suffer from hypothyroidism feel lethargic; tend to sleep a lot, and experience constipation. They may also have problems such as: extremely dry skin, hair loss, splitting nails and depression. If you feel that you have a thyroid condition, make sure to check your TSH (an indicator of thyroid function). Foods high in selenium and iodine will help regulate the thyroid function. Seaweed, sunflower seeds, shrimps, brazil nuts and whole-wheat products are good sources of those minerals. High intensity cardio with circuit training will definitely boost the fat burning process.
Pear Shape Why is it called pear shape? Because the body looks like a pear with a large bottom and a tiny top. Usually a pear-shaped person will carry most of their weight around the thighs, hips and buttocks. Since estrogen levels are high, fat deposits tend to accumulate around those specific areas. High intensity interval training will help raise metabolism and burn fats. Also, they should do upper body weights to even out the body and build muscles in the arms and shoulders. Squats and lunges are their best exercise of the lower body parts. If you are a pear shaped individual you should limit your fat intake, and focus on eating a diet rich in complex carbohydrates, such as whole-grain cereals, lentils and beans; lean protein, such as chicken or fish; and fruits and veggies will help melt off excess pounds.

Caramelized Onion–Veggie Burger Ingredients: • 1 large garlic clove, chopped • 1/2 pound cremini mushrooms, stems removed • 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves • 2 tablespoons olive oil, divided • 1 large onion, chopped (about 3 cups) • 1 cup canned lentils, rinsed and drained • 3/4 cup whole-wheat breadcrumbs • 1 large egg, whisked • 1 teaspoon salt • 1/2 cup yellow cornmeal • 2 ounces goat cheese, crumbled (about 1/4 cup) • 6 whole-grain buns • 8 tomato slices (optional) • Fresh basil leaves (optional)
Directions: Pulse first 3 ingredients in food processor until finely chopped. Heat 1 tablespoon oil over medium-high heat in a skillet; turn down to medium, and cook onion, stirring occasionally, about 15 minutes or until 70 | June 2014
Directions: Preheat oven to 450°F. Coat 2 large rimmed baking sheets with cooking spray. Cut off both ends of each onion and peel. Slice into 1/2-inch-thick slices; separate into rings. Place the rings in a medium bowl; cover with cold water. Combine flour and baking powder in a shallow dish. Lightly beat eggs in another shallow dish. Combine breadcrumbs and seasoning in a third shallow dish. Working with one ring at time, remove from the water, letting any excess drip off. Coat in flour. Dip in egg and let any excess drip off. Then coat in the breadcrumb mixture, shaking off any excess. Generously coat the onion rings with cooking spray. Bake for 10 minutes. Turn each onion ring over and return to the oven, switching the positions of the baking sheets. Continue baking until brown and very crispy, 8 to 10 minutes more. This makes 6 servings, 6-7 onion rings each. Calories per tender: 67 golden brown. Add mushroom mixture, and cook, stirring, about 2-3 minutes. Remove from heat. Stir cooled mushroom mixture into lentils, and combine with next 3 ingredients (through salt) until wellcombined. Form mixture into 6 patties (about 1/2 cup each). Put cornmeal on a shallow plate, and coat burgers evenly. Heat remaining 1 tablespoon oil in a nonstick skillet over medium heat, and cook burgers about 3 minutes. Top burgers with cheese. Tacos with Spicy Chicken
Ingredients: • 3 chicken breast halves, skinned • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper • 1 bay leaf • 1/2 teaspoon chopped fresh oregano • 2 canned chipotle chiles in adobo sauce, seeded and finely chopped • 1 finely chopped red onion • 1/4 cup white wine vinegar • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 1 cup dark beer, preferably Mexican • 12 soft corn tortillas • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro • 1 1/2 cups salsa
Directions: Preheat oven to 300°. Season the chicken breasts with salt and pepper. In a small bowl, combine the bay leaf, oregano, chipotle chiles (or another mildly hot fresh chile, seeded and finely chopped), onion, and vinegar. Allow to marinate for at least an hour or overnight. Heat olive oil in a large heavy skillet over mediumhigh heat. Sauté chicken for about 10 minutes, or until brown. Turn the chicken and cook for another 20 minutes or until tender and cooked through. Splash in 3/4 cup beer, a little at a time. As the chicken cooks, add more beer as needed to keep chicken from drying out. Test for doneness by making an incision with a knife; no pinkness means the chicken is done. (Or test with a meat thermometer; internal temperature should be 170°.) Remove chicken from skillet and allow to cool slightly. When the chicken is nearly done, wrap 6 tortillas at a time in aluminum foil. Place on a baking sheet and bake in a 300° oven for about 5 minutes or until warm. Repeat with remaining tortillas. Line a basket with a napkin, and place warmed tortillas in basket. Deglaze the pan with remaining 1/4 cup of beer. Cook for 2 minutes. Pull the chicken off the bone into bite-size strips. Toss with the pan juices and scatter the chopped cilantro over the top. Calories per serving: 225

Types of Women Guys Avoid BY: YOSRA SHOHAYEB
74 | June 2014
A
fter a lot of research and a whole bunch of interviews with men, which I must admit were quite interesting and amusing, I have come up with most of the characteristics guys avoid in women. If you are a woman reading this, don’t get it the wrong way, we all have flaws and some might be mentioned below; however, it doesn’t mean that you should seek out to change yourself for anyone. Thing is, if you believe you have a problem that needs to be addressed, then work on it for your own sake, if not, then the hell with anyone who doesn’t accept you for who you are. Most importantly, remember to always love yourself and keep ground with who you truly are. Read along, join me on my discovery journey of the types of women guys avoid and let the entertainment begin. Note: IT IS OKAY IF YOU FIND YOURSELF BETWEEN THE LINES. After all, don’t we all?
The Unconfident
Confidence is one of the main characteristics that shine through a person if it’s present, and vice versa. Many men agreed that a confident and smart woman is very attractive, while an unconfident one repels, even if she’s the hottest woman. Ramy Fathi said that he avoids girls with low self-confidence. “It’s okay to be slightly unconfident, but if it’s a daily thing, it’s a pain,” he added.
these are the worst types of women. Bad news, a man will never know this characteristic is present unless he passes through terrible womenruptsy.
The Drama Queen
Whenever I hear the word control freak, I remember Monica from the series friends. We all have an obsessed Monica in our life, but don’t we just love them? No? Yes? However, it seemed that men, for some reason, didn’t like Monicas very much. “Whatever the situation and the reason, this woman wants her opinion and her opinion alone to lead. She always perceives herself as right and no one is intellectual and knowledgeable as she is,” said Abdallah Nour.
Hands down, you knew this point was coming along. Personally, drama queens are absolutely an entertaining show I wouldn’t miss for the world. However, we have to agree that living with one, especially being in the same relationship with one, can be mentally and psychologically destructive. Good news is that it has a cure, if they managed to practice calming down themselves and keeping their mouths closed. Practice makes perfect. I wasn’t surprised when all men agreed on this characteristic. They said that a drama queen would cry her way in and out of any situation, and as we all know, will turn the tiniest situation into a third world problem. “All women have drama, but to exceed the limit that’s when you put her on the to-avoid-list,” said Hassan Emam.
The Shallow One
The Spoiled
The Control Freak
“If a woman is shallow, she will be shallow in everything. It is part of the character not the personality, which makes it more severe. A shallow woman will get attracted to you because of your body, your hairstyle, your cool shoes, your amazing car and because you’re popular, so the chances that she is still going to appreciate you and stay with you when you have nothing are really low, because they are mainly materialistic people. They only appreciate and love what you are, rather than who you are. These types of women are completely a turn off for me,” said Ahmed Abdelaziz.
The Gold Digger No figure that a gold digger is on this list. A smart woman would make a man think that he wants to blow all his money on her, whereas a foolish airheaded woman would actually seek his wallet before his heart. At least, be sneaky doing it. Most men concluded that
Spoiled women are ones that I would personally avoid. They take first prize in rich people’s problems, not to forget all the drama that is associated with them. Abdelaziz Bashandy argued that he cannot handle a spoiled woman. “A spoiled woman who got used to getting everything she wants whenever she wants it is very difficult to be with. She expects that a man will obey all her orders, because that is how she was raised up.” said Bashandy.
The Pretentious “A pretentious woman who does nothing perfect but maintain a fake attitude of perfection, that does not stem from her values but rather from the satisfaction she gets when people say she’s perfect. It’s usually something you don’t discover unless you get to know the person closely. This is the type of women I’d avoid at all costs and hopefully not too late,” said Abdelrahman Tarek. Bettina Knows Best…
Are you Crazy to say NO to the “Perfect” Guy? Dear Bettina,
I
was contacted by one of my friends about a man that had seen me at a wedding and wanted to get to know me because he thought that I would be a suitable wife for him. I have been single for a while so I accepted. I saw him four times and my mother met him as well. He is a good guy, raised in a very good family, and works in a very good position, still I don’t know why I can’t stand talking to him or stand the fact that he could be my husband one day. My mom puts a great pressure on me and thinks I am stupid if I lose the chance of a good man. I gave myself a chance to get to know him, but after a whole month I still don’t have any warm feelings for him. What is your opinion?
BY: BETTINA HEMMINGSEN
Sincerely, A Single Girl
Dear Single Girl, Having lived in Cairo for 3 years, I am familiar with the challenges you describe. From my perspective a relationship should always be based on love, equality, commitment and respect. When I listen to your description, it doesn’t sound like you are attracted to him at all or that you connect on a deeper level. Despite of all the positive things you can say about him you still have no warm feelings for him. You are not the first person who experience not being able to repay someone else’s feelings, it happens all the time all over the world. I suggest that you find the courage to talk with your mother and explain that your feelings are more important than rational decisions. It might be difficult for your mother to understand your point of view, but don’t loose your focus. Remember that each generation do it differently, and that’s part of the evolution. Once your mother accepts and understands, I suggest that you politely explain to the guy that you are simply not able to repay his feelings for you. I hope you can use my perspective on things and wish you lots of luck.

Ditch your Summer Cabin and Take the Kids on
S
a Camping Trip
ummer holidays are the most tempting holidays out of them all. They involve beach, tanning, laughter and most importantly long trips. For parents these getaways are relaxing; kids get caught up with their friends, beach and all kinds of activities, while mom and dad spend some quality time together, or even hang with their friends without a crying or fighting noise in the background. However, you’ll be surprised of what a week of camping outdoors with your kids can create, from bonding to inspirational lessons. Above all that, both you and your kids will have a one of a kind unforgettable adventurous trip. And you don’t have to wonder where to camp with your family anymore, head to Sinai, Siwa Oasis, The White Desert or a more nearer destination as Fayoum. Now get your camping gears ready, because you’re about to take on one bumpy fun ride. Here are a few tips for first time family campers:
Make sure you plan everything ahead The key to a truly enjoyable family camping trip is planning. Figure out where you want to go, what the weather will be like and what necessary gears and supplies will you need. A packing list must be at hand before you embark on your adventure. You’ll need a tent with its equipment of course, sleeping bags, extra clothing and shoes, warm clothing, first aid kit, sunscreen, flashlight, insect repellent and the list goes on. It is also important to plan your 78 | June 2014
games and activities ahead as a family, you can even camp at home for a day to teach the kids how to set up a tent and to show them how use the camping equipment. Most importantly, don’t forget night snacks; marshmallows, yum!
Test your gear We’re sure you don’t want to find you have a leak in your airbed, that your batteries need to be charged or that your gas bottle is almost empty. Test all your equipment before hitting the road: checking all tent
attachments are accounted for, and in working order, cleaning and testing cooking and food equipment, and refreshing batteries, flashlights and gas bottles. A camping trial at home as mentioned above will help you test your equipment.
Experience the kids
outdoors
with
Aside from having the environment as their bathroom, taking your kids on an outdoor trial is essential. Try to teach them about safety and nature respect, collecting firewood, filling water containers, hammering in tent stacks, camp cooking, etc. Make camp chores extra fun by creating cooking contests or who will collect firewood faster. Going a flashlight walk or a picnic will also prepare them for camp fever.
A truly learning experience Living between nature will allow your kids to learn more about it, different plants, rocks and even animals. It will make them aware of their environment and teach them survival skills. Nevertheless, they will learn cooking skills, how to set the tent and how to cooperate with nature in several ways such as creating fire with rocks and wood. It will make them face fears they have, build confidence and self-esteem and broaden their imagination. Most of all, it will be FUN!
Finally, some fresh air
Select your camping site So you’ve made it to your destination. Now it’s time to select your camping site wisely. Make sure to choose a flat piece of ground for your tents. Also make sure to clear the floor space through removing any objects that will cause uncomfortable lumps in your tent floor. Moreover, position your tent facing the correct way before setting up; you don’t want to have it falling over your heads. Extra tip: Try to keep your tent healthy by placing a shallow tray of water near the door, and a towel just inside the door – rinse your feet in the tray, then step onto the towel to dry them off.
here are the benefits camping with family:
at hand. Going on a camping trip between natures takes the whole family to make the camp work. Everyone has a role to do and starts interacting with one another. Something any family needs more frequently.
Not only is camping good for your children’s education, but to their body and soul as well. Fresh air is exactly what the doctor prescribes. You can exercise in the morning as a family through fun activities. Fresh air also allows parents to stress-free, isn’t that what we’re all looking for? We wouldn’t be surprised if you decide on settling there for good. After all, it is worth it.

Bonding like never before Admitting it or not, we’re all nowadays wired up to our phones, TVs or any technological device

Your Know-How to Hosting
FIFA 2014 WORLD CUP! BY: NOHA KANDIL
Do your Homework Even if you’re not into football, the FIFA World Cup tournament is too much fun to be missed. But how would you be able to have any fun, if you have no clue what’s going on? Do some research about the various teams. Check FIFA website for the latest news and world rankings for the various teams in order to know their chances. To make it easier for you, you could simply go with the country you like the most, and gather as much information as you can about it. Also, memorizing the key players’ names will come in handy when cheering, and if you’re up to a challenge, try to learn some football terminology in the language of the team you want to support; like goal, pass, penalty, offside, etc. Furthermore, there are nicknames for all the national teams around the world; the Spanish team for instance is known as La Furia Roja, the red fury. How cool would it be if you learned your favorite team’s nickname? Pretty cool we believe.
Go the Extra Mile Little things make all the difference, so go the extra mile and pay attention to the little details. Think of yourself 80 | June 2014
as the hosting country! For instance, get some customized shirts for your guests, in colors that match those of the teams’ jerseys or the countries’ flags. Type their names at the back of it with the year and team they’re cheering for; it would serve like a really nice souvenir that reminds them of this memorable night. Another thing you can do is buying several footballs, and make all your guests sign them just like the star players do; then hand each to your guests to keep as a reminder of the good company and the fun they had together.
Mark your Territory When hosting, you’ll probably have people on the enemy’s side; and by enemy we mean the opposing team of course. For some extra fun, try to separate each team’s supporters like that in a stadium. Move your furniture around so that each group would have their own defined space. Customize each space in a way that fits the team that’s being cheered. Flags, wigs, cheering horns, or whatever else you’ll have, make sure you’re using the right color palette that match each team. Mark your territory and let the battle begin.
Pre-match Entertainment Nobody can cheer with an empty stomach, so make sure there is food available to energize your guests as well as drinks to keep them hydrated. And no, we don’t mean the usual chips and sodas; the occasion calls for something a bit more authentic. Check for traditional easy recipes online associated with the countries playing. For instance, in Brazil, one of the most popular recipes is Bauru, a delicious roast beef sandwich with tomatoes, and pickled cucumber with melted mozzarella cheese. And for drinks, try the Garapa, the sugarcane juice; it’s one of the common drinks there, and luckily it’s available here in Egypt. Moreover, along with the delicious bites, get in the mood with World Cup’s top theme songs. Get a CD with the best theme songs ready, and start with Shakira’s 2014 World Cup anthem La La La; it has a great beat.
Rewards and Dares Bets are always fun. Put your money where your mouth is and bet on your team to win. Brain storm with your friends and come up with some rewards ideas to whoever will win; keeping in mind that you really don’t have to go crazy with the budget. Rewards can start with a bag of candy, and could go up to an original team jersey. To add to the fun, you could set a dare to the losers, and again, it doesn’t have to be extreme. You could make them jump up and down like monkeys till you order them to stop, you could ask them to sing the game stats out loud, or you could think practically and make them do the dishes. Whatever you decide, it’s going to be fun. June 2014 | 81

A Shimmering Gift from Deep in the Water BY: NIVINE MUKHTAR
A
true symbol of purity, innocence and elegance are pearls which are June’s birthstone. The uniqueness of the pearl lies as it does not need to be cut, faceted or polished to reveal its beauty.
Pearls are of one of the few organic gemstones found in nature, as it is formed inside a living creature in mollusks. Pearls are formed when a microscopic irritant such as sand, grit, or debris enters inside the mollusks and cannot be expelled. The mollusks secrete a certain smooth substance called nacre in order to protect itself from that irritant. Layer upon layer of nacre coats the foreign object and hardens, forming a pearl at the end. In general, the thicker the nacre, the richer the glow of pearl, which can greatly enhance its value. Legends and myths surrounded pearls through history. The ancient Greeks believed that pearls were tears of joy that Aphrodite, the goddess of Love, shed when she was born from sea froth. Arab legend states that pearls are drops of the moon that the oyster has fallen in love with. The ancient Chinese believed that it protects from fire and fire breathing dragons. Historically, natural pearls were found in the Gulf of Manaar (Indian Ocean), Gulf of Mexico, Gulf of California, Japan and India, but the Arabian Gulf was the main source of fine natural pearls. Pearling trade was the major economic source for Arabian Gulf people before discovering oil, as pearls were used to trade for goods around the world. Water pollution from oil splitting and over harvesting of oysters was the main cause of pearl extinction in the Arabian Gulf and the world. At the beginning of the 20th Century, Mikimoto, a Japanese entrepreneur, succeeded in developing a technique to produce round high quality cultured pearl. Mikimoto succeeded also to persuade the world that these cultured pearls are beautiful and valuable like natural 82 | June 2014
ones. The difference between natural and cultured pearls is that in the cultured pearl human interfere by firstly raising special mollusks for culturing, then the irritant is implanted in the mollusks using a certain needle to initiate the process of forming a pearl. Nowadays, pearl culturing diversified and spread to various countries around the world that caused its price to become more affordable. Artificial pearls are completely different as they are usually made out of plastic or glass then painted. Pearls come in a wide variety of colors, from white, yellow, gold, pink, blue to black and almost every shade in between. The only natural dark cultured pearls are called “Tahitian pearls; they have amazing range of colors including sliver, eggplant, pistachio, green and charcoal. Pearls are timeless, simple and fashionable jewelry that makes a stylish statement. Their range of colors give a sort of diversity when it comes to fashion.

Gemini Fashion Sense Walking into a closet of a Gemini can feel confusing to most. They have a wide variety of styles and to many it may seem very sporadic. Gemini has an attraction for clothes that are fun, bold, and can be easily taken care of and washed. A fashion style of a Gemini can be described as eclectic, funky and eccentric. They love accessories, including jewelry and bags. Favorite colors of Gemini include yellow, orange, and magenta. Gemini Hairstyle These girls are masters of new and refined stuff. For example, the Gemini girl’s favorite hairstyle might be long hair. They may love just keeping it down and simple, but later in the evening, they might accessorize it with flowers or clips. In the next few days they might want to change it up. That could include changing the color or length simultaneously. What’s it like to date a Gemini woman The Gemini woman is truly enchanting. However, dating her might feel more like a friendship than a real relationship due to her casual nature. She is very demanding and if you do not provide what she wants, she will be off onto the next adventure pretty quickly. To keep her interested is a challenge. She needs a partner with a quick mind, she tends to poke and prod at the emotions and the minds of those who are mentally slower than her, make sure you can keep up to her wit or you will briskly be left behind. What’s it like to date a Gemini man He is a great date - charming, witty, funny, clever, talkative, creative, adventurous, just make sure you can keep up with him! Women are drawn to Gemini men because of their zest for life and their vitality and enthusiasm. He loves women and is very good at persuading them and manipulating them with his cleverness getting them into bed, he will say anything to get what he wants. He is the master of seduction. If you are looking for a great fling, the Gemini man is your top choice. Gemini Erogenous Zone Gemini’s hot spots are the hands and arms. These are very sensitive regions and are very receptive to a massage and a gentle touch or stroke. This also calms the high-strung Gemini and relaxes them, setting the mood for passion. Gemini’s usually love their finger being sucked or nibbled, a great integration into foreplay that will heighten the mood. Gemini women love it when a man grabs their hand and kisses it, like a princess. 88 | June 2014
