Editor’s letter Seasons Since I was a little girl, I’ve been hearing the French word “demi-saison” from my mother at the beginning of every season; Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. Demisaison means seasonal. Every season, my mum tells me to wear demi-saison or seasonal clothes as a way of adaptation to the change in weather. Change; this is it. This is what seasons are about; change in weather, our clothes, and some of our habits and activities. Seasonal change is inevitable; we witness it four times a year. On the other hand, there are evitable changes that we encounter in life. Question is: do we avoid those changes or face them? Or let’s put it like this: Should we choose to refuse change and accept the status quo or have the courage of enjoying change whatever it takes? Personally, I would say yes to change. Why? Because I know quite well that what I could miss out on if I don’t go for change could be invaluable. If I try something new for sake of change, I will see new things, visit new places, meet new people, create new memories, challenge myself, and discover new aspects of my character. Of course change doesn’t necessarily hold positive or happy results. In fact, consequences could sometimes be unpleasant, but even in this case, I would come out of the experience with lessons learnt and stronger personality. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone every now and then. However, remember to make the calculation first. Don’t jump off a bridge just for a change, because you are definitely going to get yourself killed. Regret is an awful feeling; you don’t want to experience it one day. Thinking well before taking steps towards change is the key; it is what will push regret away no matter what the outcome of change turns out to be.

The Rainbow BY: NOUR ABOULELA Luckily I received the Rainbow shoe in gold by Wear Floggs along with this beautiful Sunita Mukhi golden eye clutch which opens up and turns into a shopping bag as well, who doesn’t love versatility? Pairing shoes with bags is not a necessity in dressing up but will always leave a neat impression. After spending an evening in my Floggs I can tell you to rest assured you can dance the night away in those heels as their foam sole is one hell of an invention! I decided to complete the outfit with this beautiful dress I got off a local Malaysian boutique and a stunning Runway collection windbreaker jacket by BCBG Max Azria.

Your Look won’t be Complete without those Mesmerizing Pair of Shoes
prada
BY: ALAA EL GARHY In Fall/Winter 2013/14 fashion shows, runways were filled with loafers and military-inspired thigh-high boots to lace up leopard heels and retro pumps. Go on and pick your favorite, I bet you can’t choose just one! 3.1 PHILLIP LIM
Ankle-Wrap High Heels: Not only does they make your legs look gorgeous and sexy, but they also give you support and confidence to walk easily. Over the Knee Boots: They are perfect with short dresses, as well as tight pants. This look was hot last season, and is even hotter this year. Lace Up Boots/Shoes: This is one of the designs that were military-

inspired, however, this season designers did an amazing job to give you a wide collection of designs to choose from. No matter what your personality is, you’ll find one of these to match it. They are practical, comfortable and stylish.
Multi-Strap Wedges: We all fell in love with wedges during the summer, tod’s designers didn’t let us down! Multi-strap wedges are one of the trendiest wedged boots this season. valentino oscar de la renta fendi

Open-Toe or Cutout: The open-toe boot may seem somewhat contradictory, but it’s actually the coolest transitional accessory you can own. Tip: Make sure the cutouts are moderate and proportional to the rest of the boot.
Zip Up Ankle Boots: They are definitely the trend this season! You can wear them with anything and they are available with all types of heels! Low Heel Loafers: Tired of all your heels and want to go out comfortable tonight? Here’s your perfect solution. Feel free to explore all the creative designs out there.
Lug Soles: Old is Gold! The 90’s era lug sole boots get a sophisticated update with a more refined heel and luxurious accents. Prada gave us an amazing example for this. It’s definitely a cooler, tougher way to wear a platform, I love how this style is inspired isabel marant and adds edge to women.

I HAVE SHOPPED ALL MY LIFE, YET I HAVE NOTHING TO WEAR! Find out the problems, the reasons & the solutions from real life experience
H
BY: YOSRA SHOHAYEB ow many times have you changed what you are wearing before going out? May we say a million and one? Although our bedrooms turn into a street market because of the amount of clothes shattered around the room, we girls still spit out the words of surrender saying, “Well, I have nothing to wear!” But why is that? Why do we, women, literally shop all our lives and yet are convinced each time we meet our wardrobe that we have nothing to wear? We are conscious that we are crazy, but this is INSANE!
In order to pin down the essence of this problem, I visited the wardrobes of four girls. Several reasons were revealed through live interaction with those girls and their wardrobes, not only to me but to them as well. Luckily, with the help of Fashion Expert and Stylist Ghadir Al Agabany, LADYBIRD was able to help those girls with solutions to bring an end to their problem. Let us meet the girls!
Messy Sherry: “No matter how much I shopped, just give it a few days and I am never satisfied,” said Sherry. Sherry’s sister and roommate flew away leaving her two full wardrobes. More room for her clothes, huh? That was not the case for Sherry. The moment I entered Sherry’s room, I recognized her problem right away. All her clothes were on her ‘missed’ sister’s bed or on a chair. No wonder she was not satisfied. She does not even know what she bought! Opening her wardrobe, it does not really take a pro to recognize that she has an organization problem. Because of Sherry’s messy problem, she forgot about pieces she had ‘buried under the sand.’ Also, due to this problem many of her clothes that she wanted to wear were dirty. What should Sherry do? Sherry, got to admit that shopping is innocent of this crime. You’ll never be fully satisfied with your shopping conquests unless you solve your main vital problem of closet catastrophe by… MERCHANDISING IT. You sincerely need to spend some time and exert some good amount of effort to organize your wardrobe. It has to be well sorted out, easily arranged and simply accessible. In other words make it look like your own little boutique that you shop from every day. A messy shop (like your sister’s bed) is neither an attractive scene nor a practical way to select an outfit. So make this your current goal. This time of year is the perfect time to start; between seasons. It will be an enjoyable experience, you’ll discover some amazing pieces you forgot, your out of fashion pieces could go to charity and the buried treasure will be remembered. 32 | November 2013
Basic Aya: Aya only shopped for basics and casuals. Every now and then, she only bought two or three dressy pieces. “I am just drawn to casuals. They represent me,” said Aya. Going through her very neat wardrobe, I understood what she was speaking of. All her clothes were simple, casual, but fashionable. She had pretty cool accessories as well. However, she always faced a problem when going to an important event. All her pieces were just too casual.
What should Aya do? Aya, casual is cool. Makes you look young and vibrant. Keep it up especially if you’re fashionable and a trendy accessorizer. However, a fashionable person is fashionable all the way, not in certain occasions. So dress up when duty calls! In special events, you don’t want to look under dressed, it will make you feel uncomfortable and out of place. This is exactly when casual isn’t cool anymore. Purchasing a new dressy piece or two to fit the occasion won’t harm you. They will still represent your down to earth personality because you’ll definitely be practical enough to choose simple elegant pieces to be worn frequently through the year with your fabulous selection and styling of accessories as you always did. >>
Photography by: Heba Aly November 2013 | 33
Dressy Vino: Like many girls, Vino likes all that is chic and dressy. Vino’s wardrobe was full with elegant dresses, floral chiffon tops, polka dot skirts, colorful heels, and fancy sandals. Even her flip-flops had some sparkle on them. What drew my attention the most at Vino’s closet was her collection of silver accessories. It was obvious that her allowance was all spent on them. Of course, she has some casuals such as jeans and button shirts, but she loves wearing her dressy outfits. Vino has a problem that she always looks overdressed in an outing. “I do not know how to turn my dressy outfits to casual ones,” Vino said. Therefore, she feels she has nothing to wear to a normal outing.
pressured Malak: Entering Malak’s room, I could not help but notice all the shades of pink and purple around me. It was the ultimate girly room. She had two big wide wardrobes with drawers at the bottom and at the top as well, and a hanging closet in the middle. Malak’s wardrobe was mostly neat; everything in its own place. However, witnessing Malak while choosing what to wear, I discovered that she has two problems. First, she forgot about some pieces she had. She had too many choices that old pieces did not matter to her and so kept them folded aside, although if she really paid attention to them, she would find that they are very fashionable and modern as well. Second, although Malak had too many choices to wear, when she was under pressure all her clothes seemed invisible. I discovered that the pressure to look good whether for a certain event, a hangout, a date, or whatever, makes all your clothes unappealing in your eyes.
What should Malak do? Malak, referring back to Sherry’s reply, remerchandising and reorganizing your closet every season would let you rediscover the hidden and forgotten. The invisibility problem on the other hand causes severe cases of super crazy shopping activities. Big oops, cause it’s an addictive syndrome. You got to be psychologically satisfied with what you already possess. Don’t freak out at every new outing to be with a new outfit. No, all you need is to restyle the same outfit in a different way with a different group of people in a different place of outing. Learn to mix and match, accessorize diversely and dominate your style. If you purchased your own clothes then they’re appealing enough to you. Give them a chance to rise and shine. 34 | November 2013
What should Vino do? Vino, it’s wonderful to be dressy all the time; it boosts the ego and makes you joyful and confident. Also I totally understand and believe that, to a certain extent, being over dressed is better than being under dressed. As much as you could dress up denim pants, you could dress down an elegant dress. Accessorizing is the secret here. For instance, flat shoes or kitten heels instead of 12cm pumps, a trendy postman bag instead of a feathered clutch and a jeans jacket instead of a glittery bolero would all calm down the look. All these alternatives could be worn with the same elegant pieces you were planning, but with a softer touch of accessories and jewelry for the mornings and afternoons to give a more relaxed, effortless look. Then unquestionably keep up the glamorous chic wow effect for the loud wild evenings.

Beauty
Trendy Winter Looks BY: JOLANDA BAKKER
N
ow that we’re partly in Winter, it’s time for a beauty catch up for our Fall/Winter 2013-2014 makeup. There are prominent makeup trends amongst a sea of equally beautiful looks, and the best part is they’re all wearable. From eyes to lips and skin, it’s all typically rich and Winter-y enough to have you greeting the cold season like an old friend. Makeup artists have taken Spring’s trends and developed them for the new season with the introduction of petal and berry stains to replace matte lips, and an even more pronounced take on Sixties beauty at the likes of Anna Sui and Emilio Pucci. A move toward more grown up, ladylike makeup is also worthy of whilst youthful dewy skin has moved aside to make way for a flawless, velvety finish. The variety of different beauty looks seen on the catwalk each season never fail to impress, but a few key trends always shine through, and I’ve collated the very best.
“Finished” Skin The “no makeup” dewy-skinned look has dominated catwalk beauty for a long time but there has been an undeniable shift towards groomed, velvety skin carefully prepped with foundation before being dusted with a liberal coat of powder to set – first hinted at last season. Makeup artists spent five times as long on the skin than the rest of the makeup and this embracing of matte satin skin was apparent at Victoria Beckham, Balmain, Chloe and Stella McCartney. I love the Fall/Winter 2013-2014 “no makeup” trend. I am slightly nervous at the thought of no blusher though!
Red Nails A noticeable increase in red nail looks was apparent backstage at the shows, with beautiful shades at Burberry and Meadham Kirchhoff and bold tomato tones at Chanel, Valentino and Topshop Unique.
46 | November 2013
Stained Lips As with Spring/Summer 2013, lips look set to be, on the most part, very matte. For Fall/Winter 2013-2014, lips appear stained rather than painted, either with colour diffusing from the inside of the lips outwards as at Dior and Marni, or with a darker, berry-stained effect at Derek Lam, Prada and Vera Wang.
Eyes Purple and red metallic shadow at Jason Wu and Gucci, black at Marc Jacobs and Roberto Cavalli and gleaming gunmetal at Donna Karan, heavily made-up, dark eyes are the way to make your mark for Fall/Winter 2013-2014. Give it a try and do match it with a nude lip!
A Thin Black Line A particular favourite at New York Fashion Week, the look added subtle and almost invisible definition at the likes of Victoria Beckham, Alexander Wang, Proenza Schouler and Christopher Kane. Black eye liner is a must in most makeup bags, but for this season - if you’re not trying out the Sixties trend - the way to wear it is in a skinny line along the top lashes.
Ladylike In line with the Hitchcock-style femininity of the season’s fashion, polished beauty looks with an almost Forties feel were seen everywhere from Carolina Herrera and Bottega Veneta to Oscar de la Renta. Rather than sticking to one key feature, the season’s “grown up” beauty pairs defined eyes with “done” lips for a super feminine look. Marc by Marc Jacobs girls spiced themselves up for the show with glossy red lips to complement sophisticated neutral toned eye makeup.

Bring Out the Best in your Eyes Part 1: Make Eye Color Pop BY: AYAT SEIF ELNASR
S
kin tone and hair color are the main basis for choosing eyeshadow colors, and the basis of smart application of eyeshadow is choosing three shades for applying eye makeup: a highlighter shadow, medium shadow, and a darker contour shadow.
• The highlighter is the lightest eyeshadow that is used to highlight underneath the arch area of your eyebrows, and the inner corner of your eye. • The medium colored shadow is used all over the eyelid up to the crease area. • The darker contour shade can be used to emphasize the crease area, or used to line the eyes. When figuring out what color eyeshadow(s) to apply, it’s nice to have a color wheel chart handy, like this one:
You want to select shades that will bring out the natural color of your eyes. Your goal is to make your eye color “pop” or stand out. You don’t want your eyeshadow to compete with or diminish your natural color in any way. The key is to select a color opposite from your own eye color in the color wheel. 50 | November 2013
For example, the opposite of blue eyes is a warm shade of brown, or tawny or golden shades. This is actually a theory discovered and proven by Leonardo da Vinci (so I am not making it up): Whenever you pair two opposite colors, they intensify each other. So by using shades of eyeshadow or eyeliner that are the
opposite of green (coppery warm browns or purple), they will make the green in the iris of your eyes look brighter and much greener. If you have brown eyes, lucky you! You can experiment with a variety of colors and still enhance your natural eye color. So play with purple, green, gold, navy, silver, copper, or brown. Any color looks beautiful around brown eyes; you will not be competing with your natural eye color. If you are wondering why you do not see a category on the chart for hazel eyes, it is because they are not just one color. Hazel eyes are a mixture of colors, either green and brown or green and blue. Depending on which color you want to enhance, choose your eyeshadow to bring that color out, and place your eyes in the color category you want to enhance. If you have blue-green hazel eyes, you can choose shades from the blue or green category. If you have green-brown hazel eyes, you can place them in the green or brown category. So you get to pick. Don’t be afraid to experiment.

A general rule of thumb with eyeshadow is to first compliment your eye color and then it shouldn’t contrast your clothing. In other words, don’t wear a purple based eyeshadow on your blue eyes while you are wearing a coral toned shirt. You should try to keep your clothing and eyeshadow in the same or color family, or at least a complimentary family. And finally, remember that sometimes less is more. Don’t add 5 layers of green eyeshadow on your brown eyes, thinking that it will make them look fabulous. Often times a slight hint of color is all your eyes need to really pop and look mesmerizing.

not believe in perfection and I believe that rules are meant to be broken in a positive way, as long as you are not messing with anyone’s freedom. The 360 degree symbolizes perfection in a way and that is why I took a one degree less. In my opinion, perfection is overrated and this is why that is the motto of three fifty nine.
Marwa Sayed
A Young Face in the Fashion Industry BY: YOSRA SHOHAYEB When I first came across the brand three fifty nine on Facebook, I was absolutely in love with it. I fell in love with its patterns, illustrations, colors, and all its little but important details. The brand three fifty nine, more accurately Marwa Sayed, is exactly what the Egyptian fashion industry needed; a vision for an up beat fashionable tomorrow. Something new, different, and twisted just the way you like it. Tag along and meet Marwa. Tell us about yourself. I am a very random and spontaneous person, not in terms of mood swings but my interests change a lot, which is reflected on my style. I always take drastic changes. At the end of the day, there are things I never mess with such as family or career. What is the meaning behind your brand’s name three fifty nine? Three fifty nine mainly reflects my personality. I do 52 | November 2013
What is the inspiration behind your designs? Nothing or no one in particular, but it is life in general. I do not have a role model. Every person I meet or interact with inspires me in a way.
Have you always wanted to be a designer? No, I do not know where this came from and that is why I never call myself a designer. The whole thing started with two things. I always find that the things I shop for need to be readjusted in a way and I keep on visualizing them. On the other side, my friends who happen to be artists, whom I adore their work, inspired me. I visualized their work on clothes. I found resistance from them, because they could not imagine it and that was my part to show them. Who is the three fifty nine girl? The girl would be very hip, very switched on and pleasure driven. At the very same time, I find the collection very diverse. Anyone can wear it depending on their personality. What is your favorite piece? I have three favorites. One of them is the vest, because the fabric is nothing but a rope ball like a lace. I have a lot of respect to the effort invested in it. It is fully handmade. The others are the shirts illustrated by Hany Mahfouz and the pattern stone-beaded skirt. When did it come to you that it is time to start? When I was miserable with my last job. It limited me. I am very much of a free spirit and project-driven when it comes to work. I hate the rules that do not make sense. Many things were happening at the same time and I took them as signs that I need to start. I was always busy with my full-time job and I tried to design on the side and it was a disaster. One thing led to another, so I had to quit and start it now, otherwise I will never do it. Tell us about the most prominent obstacles you faced. Dealing with Chinese people, as I produce my stuff in Hong Kong. They do not speak anything but Chinese. Another obstacle is the finance and finding resources. The last obstacle is that you imagine certain things in your design, then discover a total different thing in production and so you have to take certain procedures to get it done. This way you might be jeopardizing the whole collection or a certain piece. What’s your advice for aspiring designers? Go for it! It is really worth it, even if you do not sleep for days or do not have cash to buy your own coffee. Do not fear starting, just start.

Roehampton in London. And now at the age of twenty eight, Sherine is a clinical nutritionist and a member of the Nutriton Society in the UK. We were glad to meet her and have a discussion with her about herself and her work.
Meet Clinical Nutritionist
Dr. Sherine El Shimi BY: FARAH ASFOUR Sherine El Shimi is a young Egyptian woman who has managed to achieve big part of her dreams while still in her twenties. She attended the Faculty of Medicine at Alexandria University, did a diploma in Nutrition and Public Health, then she got her master’s in clinical nutrition from the University of 54 | November 2013
What aroused your interest in nutrition? After I graduated, I worked as an assistant in a nutrition center and through my work I discovered that nutrition is very important and has many aspects. Healthy eating can prevent diseases, losing weight is life changing, and some diseases including type 2 diabetes and cancer can in fact be cured through nutrition; all these facts inspired me and triggered my interest in nutrition. Another reason nutrition appealed to me is that a nutritionist gives people the energy and the power to reach their target weight and shows them the way; thus having positive impact on their lives. Due to all of this, I chose to specialize in clinical nutrition and my master’s thesis was in nutrition in cancer patients. Can you give us an idea about your diet plans? I give my patients personalized diet plans according to their daily routine, their lifestyle, their personality, their eating habits as in whether they eat breakfast for example or not, their cravings, diseases, if any, etc. I also take into account such things as my patients’ outings and travels so that the diet plan I provide is not only successful but also sustainable. For me, there is no fixed or standard diet plan; it is
rather tailored based on several criteria as I have just explained.
workout in order to rebuild the muscles. Then eat 120 grams of protein; tuna can be a good choice.
What is the best age range for the effectiveness of diets? It is easiest for females to lose weight before maturity and it is much easier before menopause than afterwards. As for males, age doesn’t make a difference when it comes to diet results.
What are some common nutrition myths that are not true? A common myth is that grains are very important. Actually, they are not extremely important as many people think; they can be eliminated and replaced by bigger servings of fruits and vegetables per day. Another myth is that olive oil, vitamins, whole milk yogurt, and drinking water while eating are fattening.
Is it true that following any diet plan should go hand in hand with exercising? Exercise is essential for the effectiveness of any diet plan. When you are on a diet, your calorie intake is decreased and your bones and muscles are broken down, so you must exercise to compensate for that. In addition, exercise increases metabolism and releases endorphins that boost the mood, so it is always of great benefit. What should we eat and when to get the most out of our workouts? You should eat high energy foods (protein) 2 hours before exercising. Eggs are an excellent option. Eat a banana 45 minutes before the workout to increase the sugar level. Have a protein shake 1 hour after the

Can the health of people who diet frequently be negatively affected due to excessive dieting? This is a possibility. As a preventive measure, anyone who diets should have medical tests every 6 months and bone density test every year especially for females over 45.

What did you learn from your career? I learned to believe in my talent and take it seriously. Planning every aspect of my business is a must to achieve my goals and this business is all about my clients. Self-motivation is the most important thing I learned. Everyone should keep looking forward and face the challenges.
Shereen Begermy: She is the Designer of SHE Designs
Can you give us a brief introduction about yourself? Shereen Begermy, I’m an Egyptian fashion designer, born and raised in KSA, graduated with a Bachelor of Science and I have a Master’s degree in Histopathology. How was your start in fashion design and why did you choose this field in particular? I have always been into fashion and it has always been a dream for me to pursue a career in the fashion industry, so I decided to switch my career, I studied fashion and got a stylist diploma at Istituto Di Moda Burgo, Egypt, and graduated with the 2nd prize for my fashion design project in 2010. Then I started my business in 2011 with a passion for matching elegant clothing with modern styles. What do you like most about your work? I like being able to express a lot about myself and my vision on paper and then apply it in reality. 56 | November 2013
Did you face any obstacles in your work? The main obstacle was finding unique and quality fabrics in the Egyptian market. Therefore, I started bringing fabrics from different countries. Also finding skilled workers was a hard task.
Who are your favorite fashion designers? Marc Jacobs, Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney, Ralph Lauren, Balmain and of course Chanel of all time. And l like Zuhair Murad, George Hobeika, Basil Soda and Abed Mahfouz from the Arab world. Which fabrics do you like to work with? I like to work with stylish comfy fabrics like cotton satin. In your opinion, what differentiates your designs from those of others? Quality, finishing and details. What factors should ladies take into consideration when choosing their clothes? Colors are very important; they should be taken into
consideration. Some clothes look better on someone because of their colors. Ladies must know the colors which emphasize or play down certain areas of their bodies. Lines create visual impressions, they tell the dimensions of length and width. They can create shapes and forms when they combine and enclose spaces. Ladies should also consider the texture of fabric used; whether it is pleasing to the eyes and soft or comfortable to the touch is an important factor in choosing clothes. And of course, ladies should wear clothes suitable to the place they are going to or the occasion they are attending. What are your favorite trends this season? Battlefield and futuristic with metallic and glittery artwork and details. For more info, check facebook fanpage: SHE designs

One of a Kind! BY: Sally el bardesy
“One of a kind” is a phrase and an aim at the same time. We seem to be searching for it constantly in our style, words, charms, belongings and also décor. Originally in décor and interior design there is nothing called “one of a kind” style or “crazy” style, so we usually call them themes. Themes have no limits and anything could be converted to a design theme. That’s why it’s always original unless it’s a trend. Remember that red lips shape sofa? It was only a “one of a kind” theme but soon it became very popular in video clips, movies and shops, that’s why it had to end soon because it became no longer that “one of a kind.” I’ve loved to show you some “one of a kind” décor and furniture items that could inspire you one day with your own elements in life… ENJOY!

LADYBIRD’S You Ask, Experts Answer! Dr. Marvin Den MD
Internal Medicine
Dr. Keegan A. Duchicela Family Medicine
What are healthy carbs?
Are there benefits to meditation?
Doctor’s Answer:
Doctor’s Answer:
The best carbs are those that are not too processed. Anything instant or made with “white” flour has already been broken down and you are getting “sugar.” Avoid high fructose corn syrup as well. Whole grain or wheat or carbs that need to be cooked a lot are the best. Remember though, amounts ingested count as well.
Yes. Meditation is a great way to reduce stress, enhance concentration, control pain, and manage anger and negative feelings. Try to work it into your daily routine, as you would brush your teeth or comb your hair.

Dr. Ruben J. Rucoba Pediatrics
After sex I bleed, why?
Can I eat sushi while breastfeeding?
Doctor’s Answer:
Doctor’s Answer:
Make an appointment. There are a number of possibilities. Most are not dangerous: vaginal/ cervical lacerations, bacterial infections, cervical/ endometrial polyps, etc. Others may be more serious: cervical cancer, endometrial hyperplasia or cancer, etc. See your doctor soon. An exam and few simple diagnostic tests will likely give you an answer.
Fresh sushi from a reputable place poses no risk to your baby. As with eating any uncooked fish, infection is a risk, but only for you, not your baby. Some fish (salmon, flounder, sole) have high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, which help the heart and brain development of your baby. Avoid fish with high levels of mercury (shark, swordfish, king mackerel).

I want to try the juice fasting as a method of losing weight, is it safe for me?
What is the best remedy for severe dry skin?
Internal Medicine
Doctor’s Answer: If you do it for a short period of time, it is not harmful but I do not think it is the best way to lose weight. You are going to shock your body, most likely consume fewer calories than your resting metabolic rate (calories burned by sitting and doing nothing). This method of weight loss can cause a slowdown in metabolism. When you go back to your regular diet, you may gain the weight back or worse.
Doctor’s Answer: The very best remedy for dry skin is as follows: Sit in the bathtub for 30 - 60 minutes (no soap) then get out, dry off, wait 15 minutes and apply Vaseline all over your body.

I get a lot of calf cramps in my right leg post exercise. I stay hydrated and eat healthy, warm up and stretch after. Tips on prevention?
Are there certain colors that overweight women should avoid?
Doctor’s Answer: This could be a potassium deficiency. Eat potassium rich foods (bananas, tomatoes, cantaloupe) after the workout and see if it helps. Other possibilities include increased lactic acid build up from excessive exercise or simply fatigue. In either case, you would need to back down your exercise and very gradually build it back up to the current level over time.
Expert’s Answer: Well it all starts with confidence. Only your confidence would pull off any outfit no matter what size you are. True that dark hide and light highlight but you can still wear your favorite trendy color and pull it off. You just need to be aware of your body, embrace it and act upon it. For instance, if you’re having a curvy bottom then wear a top with this favorite light color and vice versa should you have a larger bust. If you have a small waist, benefit from your privilege by wearing a nice belt and make that in a light color and if not of anything, wear a scarf with this new favorite color of yours. Bottom line is, don’t be a victim of all those absolute stereotype fashion rules. Everybody is different and big girls can indeed look beautiful and it doesn’t have to only be by wearing a plain black dress.

Eliminate Stress with Colors Know what colors to wear and decorate with to relieve your stress once and for all!
In such a fast-paced world we live in nowadays, our wishes are becoming simpler; we just want to sit back and relax even for 10 minutes. Is that so much to ask for? Well, as a matter of fact, yes. LADYBIRD knows how stressed and tired you get in your daily routine, whether by dropping the kids off at school, working late, picking up the dry cleaning, grocery shopping, house cleaning, getting your workout in, or cooking dinner for the family. You feel like you do not even have the time to breathe. That is why we are showing you that you do not have to go far to reduce your everlasting stress, but rather color your environment to relieve your stress. Read on and get to know what colors you can wear or decorate with in order to relax and revitalize yourself. Research has shown that different colors have different effects upon us psychologically, emotionally and even physically. So if you are suffering from stress and its effects, you might consider changing the colors in your environment. You can select certain colors to surround yourself with and to wear as a stress management tool.
Blue:
Blue is a very soothing color that helps calm your mind and reduce tension. It is best to use in bedrooms because of its ability to help people sleep. When choosing the right blue you want to make sure that it is soft, neutral and restful. Blue has a tremendous stress management quality to it, making us feel cool and calm. Consider wearing dark blue to lift you out of a stressful mood or if you anticipate a stressful situation in your day ahead.
Violet:
The color violet stems from blue. It represents strength, peace and wisdom. It can give you feelings of inner peace when you wear it. Decorating with it can give your space a peaceful feeling, relieving stress internally and externally. When done right, violet can bring inner balance and peace to your soul. Keep in mind that you never want to choose a hue that is going to seem too drab (i.e. has too much black in it) because it will create a cold environment. 68 | November 2013
Editorial Features Yellow:
Yellow is considered sunny and cheerful. It’s a great color to lift your spirits, and when you live in a positive state you are well-equipped to combat stress.
Pink:
This color is seen as a soft and tranquil color. Its peacefulness promotes balance of your energies. Pink helps calm and bring peace into a room. It soothes the energy in a room and keeps it understated.
Green:
Green symbolizes nature, it is very visually soothing and therefore allows us to stay calm and refreshed. We often find ourselves most relaxed when sitting between nature’s most beautiful colors. Why not bring those colors inside and keep that same serenity in our homes?
Grey:
Most people think of grey as dull, boring and maybe a little depressing. But the truth is grey can provide a very soothing and cooling presence. It is also a very neutral color, so it will work well with all of your furnishings and art work that you currently own.
White:
Controlling Diabetes Prevents Blindness Diabetes is one of the most common diseases among Egyptians; Egypt ranks 9th worldwide with a prevalence of 16.6%. Marking its 4th annual meeting in Cairo, The Arab Diabetes Forum (ADF) emphasized the need to better understand the consequences of diabetes, especially its impact on vision.
1 out of every 5 diabetics in Egypt is at risk of Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) DR is a major cause of blindness in adults with diabetes, condemning patients to progressive loss of vision and independence. Left untreated, 50% of people with DR risk losing their vision.
This color represents clarity and freshness. However, be careful with this color because once it gets dingy and dull, you emotions can mirror the dullness. It really needs to be a clean and bright white.
Laser treatments only contain the damage
Black:
Breakthrough injection improves vision
Black is tricky. It can be overpowering at times, as it gives a feeling of power and elegance. It is one color that can impact your world either way so you need to be careful when decorating with or wearing black.
Red:
This color is an exciting and stimulating color. It is not one to use for stress management. It is usually associated with passion and vigor. In case you want to lift yourself out of an emotional slump, use this color.
Orange:
Like red, orange does not have that calming effect you are looking for. Instead, orange is a stimulating and intense color. It can work to give you energy when you are feeling low.
Until recently, treatment of retinal diseases has been through laser. These treatments contain the damage for many, but do not improve eyesight.
The latest treatment milestone is the FDA’s approval in 2012 of the ranibizumab injection for making it the first and only approved drug for the condition. The new drug only stops visual deterioration, but it also improves patients’ vision significantly.
Early detection is the best means of protection If you’re a diabetes patient, it’s important that you manage the disease for better quality of life. Controlling diabetes from the start reduces eye complications by more than 38%. Final word: Go for an eye checkup every year, no matter how good your vision seems to be.

The F-word: Four Fitness Finds For Fashion Friends BY: NATASCIA PAOLUCCI Trends can be observed everywhere and especially where you don’t expect them. They signal a change in the way we understand our world. They are evolutionary. These four fitness trends will definitively change your workout routine. They are revolutionary!
1. Dance Fusion Zumba used to be everything but it clearly did not hold the last word in dancing classes. Now that dance-based fitness has snowballed into a whole subset of classes, new variations, such as “Doonya” and “GROOV3,” have risen into fun and effective alternatives. The first is a particularly intense workout program that works your entire body while making you feel like a Bollywood star. It is based on Indian music rhythms and will definitively fill your need for exotic atmosphere. GROOV3, however, is more urban, as it is based on hip-hop. It was created by an actual choreographer (Ben Allen) who actually performed at the “American Music Awards” and in the movie “Rent.” This shows in the workout and renders the experience more real. And the best part of it is that it is accessible to all ages and levels, which makes it a great way to exercise with friends and family.
2. Mud Runs and Obstacle Races These will connect you to your wild side. They will reconcile you with your inner child. There will be dirt and there will be mud… and you will be allowed to gallop through it all at will! In effect, theme races are quite the rage and for good reason. They combine running skills and the challenge of difficult conditions. You could have to climb wall climbs, wade through freezing ice water under barbed wire and, of course, crawl through mud pits. Well, not your average 5K. And to make things more exciting, every race is different, such that you are sure to find one that is appropriate for you and that you won’t get bored if you decide to repeat the adventure. They do have something in common though… everyone who participated seems to want to do it again! You can find the next event organized under such names as “Tough Mudder”, “Spartan Race”, and the “Dirty Girl Mud Run”. 70 | November 2013
3. Pound Most people enjoy music as they workout. Actually, most people like music, period. Well, here is the chance to make some with your own body, the opportunity to become the instrument! Indeed, these workout classes transform you into a rhythm tool. Pound combines beat and weighted drumsticks called “Ripstix” into a full body jam session. Really, it could be described as a combination of intense cardio, pilates, plyometrics, isometrics movements. It is a very complete exercise session, which usually lasts 45 minutes… but best of all, it can burn 600 to 900 calories per hour. Pound Rockout. Workout.
4. Aquabiking This is a sophisticated blend between spinning and aqua-aerobics. And it is the ultimate cellulite fighter! More specifically, aqua-biking involves riding a bicycle in water, which will sculpt your legs and improve your endurance with the added difficulty of water resistance, without pain. In effect, it is gentle to your joints, which makes it great for elderly, overweight or recovering athletes who need a low impact exercise with high impact on their abs and tights. And it has a spa treatment integrated. Indeed, pedaling in water causes a movement of water mass to your buttocks, legs, thighs and lower belly. So, the more you move, the more effective the massaging action will be. Needless to say, it is also a calorie burner, as you can lose between 300 and 500 calories per session.
Whether you have always been the trendy type or the original one, be proud of earning your Fs. It is all fine as long as you make sure to have great Fun with Fashion. And, you never know, you may even get Fitter! Being healthy is always in style, so join the move… MOVE! November 2013 | 71

Paleo anyone? BY: SHERINE EL SHIMI
So what is the Paleo diet that you hear about a lot nowadays? Is it just another fad diet like most plans are? Or should we at least give this one a chance? Let me explain! The hunter-gatherer diet (better known as Paleo) is typically what our ancestors have survived on for millions of years. A highly unknown fact is that our digestive systems have not evolved from 1.7 million years ago to this day and it is still not used to our man made diets. The Paleo plan consists mainly of proteins such as chicken, meat, fish and rabbit. It also includes fruits and vegetables. The diet has completely eliminated the whole-grain aspect of the food pyrimad. As we all know, our ancestors have never tried pasta, bread or rice (shocking I know). Hence, the Hadzabe tribe, which is one of the last hunter-gatherer tribes in Africa, has no incidence of diabetes, cancer or heart disease, which means they must be doing something right. Dairy is not completely frowned upon contrary to popular belief; some low fat or skimmed products could be added to the plan. The caveman diet is both the perfect approach for both losing weight, becoming healthier and increasing the nutrients, vitamins and minerals in your daily life. The concept of Paleo diet is pretty simple, you just need to get in and DO IT!
The typical “caveman grocery list would look like that: Veggies They are rich in phytonutrients and antioxidants which are good for the immune system, they are also good for the glycemic index which is essentially protective against diabetes. Onions

Meat
Dairy
Free-range meat such as chicken (breast or thigh), turkey, and beef as in tenderloin and sirloin are good options. Natural range sausages are also a good choice.
Egg whites are good options as they also contain a lot of omega 3, which has EPA and DHA and are very low in calories.
Fish Salmon and tuna are the best options as they contain omega 3 fatty acids.
Oils and nuts Olive oil is essential for this diet. Nuts, such as macadamia, walnuts and almonds, are also essential.
N.B. My advice is to avoid “aisle temptation” in order not to buy unnecessary options.
Here’s a sneak peak of a daily Paleo plan: Breakfast ¼ cup of strawberries and 2 egg whites, which are scrambled (for people not having autoimmune diseases) with adding mushrooms and tomatoes.
Snack Almonds and walnuts (10-14 pieces).
Lunch Beef roasted in the oven (200g) in addition to broccoli or cabbage, or instead add two eggplants with ginger and olive oil.
After lunch Green tea with lemon.
Dinner Grilled chicken breast marinated in a mixture of olive oil, lemon and garlic. After marinating, add the cut pieces of chicken to lettuce, bell peppers and artichokes, either boiled or stir-fried.
Dessert A cup of strawberries with almonds.
I dare you to go on the Paleo challenge for 10 days while recording your progress in a food diary. Notice the change in energy level after the first three days. I would love to hear about your progress at selshimi@gmail.com November 2013 | 75

Winter = Baking Season! Our favorite winter-baking recipe: Cinnamon coffee cake BY: Maha Alfy Half the appeal of making this festive coffee cake is rolling the balls of dough in cinnamon sugar. The balance, of course, is pulling it apart and polishing it off.
Ingredients: • • • • • • • • • • •
1/2 cup warm water 7g packages dry active yeast 1 cup milk 8 tablespoons butter 1 cup sugar 1 teaspoon salt 5 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 cup chopped walnuts 1 tablespoon cinnamon 1 cup confectioners’ sugar 4 teaspoons milk
Directions: 1. In a large mixing bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm water. Warm 1 cup of milk and stir in 4 tablespoons of the butter. Add the milk mixture, 1/2 cup of sugar, the salt, and 1 cup of flour to the yeast. Stir well. Add the remaining flour, 1 cup at a time, stirring until the dough feels stiff. Then turn the dough into a lightly floured board and knead for 8 to 10 minutes, adding extra flour if needed. Put the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise until it has doubled in bulk (about 1 to 1-1/2 hours). 2. Grease a 12-cup Bundt pan. Melt the remaining butter and pour it into the pan. Add the walnuts. Combine the rest of the sugar with the cinnamon and sprinkle 1/4 cup of the mixture over the nuts. 3. Punch down the risen dough. Then break off small pieces, form balls, and roll them in more of the cinnamon sugar (a great job for kids). Layer the balls in the pan. Cover and let rise until doubled in bulk (about 45 minutes). 4. Heat the oven to 350 degrees. Sprinkle any remaining cinnamon sugar on the dough balls, then bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until golden brown. 5. Immediately invert the coffee cake onto a plate and let it cool for a few minutes. Finally, stir together the confectioners’ sugar and the 4 teaspoons of milk and drizzle the icing over the cake. Serves 10 to 12.

I Wish He Wore Loafers! BY: Farah Asfour & Yosra Shohayeb
80 | November 2013
Nina: Louka I’m seeing someone. Louka: No wayyy. Tell me about it. Nina: He’s amazing and so cool. I really admire him. He’s everything I always dreamt of except for one thing.
Louka: That is… Nina: He’s NOT STYLISH! Louka: OMG Nina, you’ve never been that shallow. It’s very hard to have genuine feelings towards a guy these days and it’s even harder to meet a respectable man in the first place.
Nina: Come on Louka, you know me well, I’m not that pampered superficial girl. Louka: Then why do you give great importance to your boyfriend’s fashion style? Nina: I don’t judge people by what they wear but I believe that your clothes can say much about you; they can be a reflection of your personality and lifestyle.
Louka: I agree. I think that fashion does reveal some hints about your personality. However, it might not always be like that. Anyways, what exactly about your “Mr. Imperfect’s” style that doesn’t appeal to you?
Nina: His SHOES; not actually my type. Don’t think I’m crazy or anything, but I adore men’s loafers. Sad me, my man doesn’t like them.
Louka: WHAT! And you don’t want me to think you’re crazy! You’re totally insane. Since when were “loafers” a relationship issue?! Just get over it.
Nina: But fashion is my passion; I always dress fashionably, follow the latest trends and buy unique stylish pieces. He doesn’t always like or understand what I’m wearing even though most people who see me comment on how fashionable I am.
Louka: Wow, this is more complicated than I thought. It must really be bugging you to speak this much about it. Listen, either you confront him with it and see what he’ll say or you move on and find your compatible “voguish guy.”
Nina:
Honestly, I know there’s no guarantee I’ll like everything about that “voguish guy” if I ever come across him one day.
Louka: What’s wrong with you! You’re either schizophrenic or PMSing. It’s like you’re having a quarter-life crisis. Decide what you really want in a guy and then judge his fashion taste afterwards.

Mother & Child
Are you raising a little Princess? BY: Bettina Hemmingsen
In the West, the physical appearance of the body defines and characterizes what kind of person you are. A recent Time magazine study found that men and women who are thought to be attractive make 17% more money in their lifetime than men and women who are thought of as unattractive. This means that employers are judging a person’s strength, fitness, and ability to do their job and interact with people on the basis of their physical appearance.
The excessive focus on beauty harm your daughter’s self-worth We live in a youth obsessed society. We cannot watch a TV show, enjoy a movie, walk through a store or read a magazine without seeing or hearing something about altering our face, bodies or changing our style of dress in order to look younger or sexier. We know that the beauty industry works hard at marketing to women in particular to alter their bodies into an image that is not realistic. We know that young girls are exposed to this on a daily basis and that this great over-stimulating society that we live in affect their self-esteem and self-images that they hold for themselves. So how, do we raise girls with a healthy sense of self-worth?
The mentality of a Princess Although it’s often easier to point the finger at someone else and blame the media, celebrities and fashion industries for the effect they have on our daughters’ self-image, we shouldn’t ignore the responsibility we hold as parents as well. Mothers who go to great lengths to pick out their daughters’ outfit and to style them from a very early age are often attempting to make up for their own failed dreams or lack of attention. When the children’s glory reflects on the parent, the feelings of regret and disappointment about their own lost opportunities may gradually resolve, and make way for pride and fulfilment. Unfortunately this pattern lead to a false sense of self and a fragile identity which makes the girl an easy target for the powerful and manipulating fashion media world. 82 | November 2013
The importance of being a role model for your daughter Mothers are their daughters’ first role models. This is part of discovering who we are and trying to find our place in the world as women. This is fine if you have a strong female role model from which to emulate yourself after. But what happens if you don’t? Unfortunately there are many girls today that do not have strong female role models so they turn to the television as their guide to living their life and making important life choices. One of the rites of passage for girls is painting their nails, playing with makeup, and dressing up in their mother’s clothes. All of these things are typical childhood activities for young girls. But it is not the nail polish or the brand or design of the clothes that create the problem, it is rather the lack of guidance that goes along with these things. There are some things that are just inappropriate for young girls. For example, there was some recent controversy about a push up bathing suit for tweens. The argument was that this is creating a sexual image of seven and eight year old children and drawing attention to parts of their bodies that have not even developed yet. However, the power is in the parents’ control. It is your choice to spend your money on this type of merchandise or not.
Self-image, Self-worth, Self-esteem So what does it mean to have a positive self-image, a healthy sense of self-worth and a high self-esteem? Self-image is the perception that one has of oneself. Self-worth is the value that one places on oneself. Self-esteem is a combination of these things along with the confidence that one has to have a strong, positive sense of oneself. There are many external forces that create pressure on girls today. They even include the inner circle of your daughter’s friends. Girls can be manipulative and caddy. If you do something to offend one of them, you are likely to see a very passive, manipulative transformation of who were once friends.
Building positive self images So how do we work to grow young girls into women with a strong sense of self that will lead them to have a positive, successful life?
• Monitor the programs that your daughter watches. Make sure that your daughter is watching shows that show girls and women who are not overly focused on body image or that create a ditsy character.
• Examine the role that you are modelling for your impressionable child. Do you talk about your dislike for your body in front of your daughter or talk about dieting? Try saying things like, “I’m exercising or eating to keep my body healthy and strong.”
• Encourage your daughter to participate in non-traditional girl activities. Encourage your daughter to like and be good at math or science. Have her play a sport. Prompt her to do something that interests her, not just what is “cool.” • Have conversations with your daughter. You will never know what your daughter is thinking unless you ask her. Keeping communication lines open will help your daughter to feel safe in coming to you when she has a problem. • Be honest. Many children have an overinflated ego today because no one tells them when they are not good at something. Reality is that not everyone is good at everything and it’s our duty as parents to say it in a way that is kind, but honest as well. • Know your daughter’s friends. Sometimes you will be able to head off a potential problem if you know who your daughter’s friends are.
• Help your child to have several circles of friends. This may be people at school, sports teams,
etc. That way if your daughter is having conflict with one group, she can always turn to another. • Role-play. Practice different scenarios of things that could happen in your daughter’s social life. Practice how she would handle taunting and teasing about her looks, weight, or any other potential bullying.

n October 5, on a sunny and breezy day, Masriya woke up tired as always, but what could she do? “C’est la vie,” she always said. She thought at least after a year of working and waking up early she would maybe get used to it, but it just never happened. Everyday it was the same old boring scenario. “Masriya,” her mother shouted. “Wake up darling, you have a job to go to.” Don’t get this wrong, Masriya was in love with her job. Why wouldn’t she? She was doing what she always dreamt of; working as an Account Executive in a multinational publication firm. Well, not really her dream job, but she thought that if she proved herself well enough, one day her writings would be recognized and she would have her very own book published. That was her real dream. It was magical how she envisioned her dreams. She dreamt about it night and day. Every morning she would wake up with semi-eyes opened, yawning, and stretching her arms with a smile on her face having visions of the dream she has everyday of being a well-known writer, who makes a difference in people’s lives with her writings. “Masriya! You’ll be late,” her mother always seemed to interrupt her dreams with her loud voice.
84 | November 2013
You see Masriya loved fashionable chic clothes. She loved floral and maxi dresses, she loved those chiffon loose tops and those colorful up-beat heels. You see she loved everything about fashion, the meaning it holds, the feeling it gives and the message it delivers. Masriya always loved to travel to fashion destinations such as the UK, US and Paris. She collected all kinds of trendy pieces. Although she always picked pieces that would suit her Egyptian culture such as long sleeved maxi dresses, she still got bothered by men in Cairo streets, whether through nasty words that scratched her honor or through being physically harassed. For Masriya, fashion was a tool of expression, but sadly that slightest minimal right of hers was taken away by the streets of Cairo, more specifically by the people who occupied those streets.
at least do her part by wearing a gear. Masriya even stopped wearing her smile to the street, because then she would hear something like, “Hey babe, what’s so funny?” She stopped wearing colors, because then she would be grabbing men’s attention to her. The way they looked at her made her feel naked, as if she had the choice to be a girl in this country. Even though she has all those gears, men would still look at her in a dirty way. That day at the bus station, October 5 was the longest day in a year Masriya waited for bus number 121, the one that headed to her work area. While waiting for the bus, Masriya dived in her thoughts. She always loved diving in her thoughts, just didn’t have much time in a fast paced world. Masriya didn’t mind waiting for the bus, even though she was late. Somehow, she felt she had the right to wander for a while. Masriya thought of her college days. She thought of her ‘gear’ to university and how she had to wear a long buttoned shirt, a scarf around her neck, jeans, and sneakers because of the area it was in. She imagined how different her life would be if she hadn’t had to wear those gears and how different her feeling would be. Masriya loved to take long walks in the streets. Her inspiration came from the nature around her, but the streets made it difficult for Masriya to do that. She thought of everything those 20 minutes she waited for the bus. Although Masriya loved being a girl, while diving in her thoughts and remembering all her gears and all the situations she had been subjected to in the streets of Cairo, at that moment, at that exact minute, Masriya wished she was a He rather than a She. “Hey, you coming?” the bus driver asked Masriya. Suddenly, she was awakened back to reality ready for another day closer to her dreams.
“
Masriya didn’t only have a gear for the bus station, Masriya had a gear for every street and every occasion. She had a gear for taxis, which was a little similar to the bus gear but without the long cardigan. She had a gear for weddings, a abaya above her dress, which is a long loose piece of cloth. She had a gear for specific crowded areas such as Al-Mosky or Abd El-Aziz street. In those areas she focused on wearing a very loose and long shirt, jeans, sneakers and lifted her hair up. She also walked in a way as if she had a target to reach without looking right or left. In Cairo streets, whether it was those crowded streets or even classy streets in Zamalek, men flirted with her and bothered her anyways, but she thought that she should
I can’t even wear my smile to the street. Masriya
“
Masriya rushed out of bed after seeing the time, ‘6:30 A.M.’ Masriya had a 7:00 A.M. bus to catch everyday in order to reach work at 8:00 A.M. Masriya’s work was far away from home, so she had to take ‘Cairo’s Local Bus,’ because she wasn’t planning on spending half of her salary going by taxi, and she couldn’t afford to buy a car, and she didn’t want to seek any help from her mother. She wanted to be… independent. Masriya washed her face, brushed her teeth, grabbed her chic formal clothes folded from the night before and put on her gear before going down. Gear? Last time we heard about Masriya’s career she was working at a publication firm not a war zone, but Masriya called it her ‘gear.’ Her gear was a scarf she put around her upper body, a long cardigan and a pair of flats rather than the heels she wore to work. Everyday she imagined if she wore what she did to work and went to the bus station. Well, there wouldn’t be a Masriya on the face of the earth again. Don’t let your imagination run wild. That day Masriya wore to work a fit peach blazer, a tucked in white chiffon top, formal skinny black pants and a pair of verne black high heels.

Lucky November People You have Two Birthstones BY: Nivine Mukhtar
People born in November are lucky as they have two birth stones in this month to choose from. Yellow topaz and citrine gemstones both share the same yellow color range but they belong to different mineral groups.
Citrine
Topaz
The light yellow glow of sunshine or the reddish orange glow of a sunset are citrine colors. Citrine comes in a variety of yellow shades to reddish orange color. Long ago it had been considered a gift from the sun. The name was derived from the Latin word citrus meaning lemon. The most valuable color is the dark orange named Madeira citrine after the color of wine.
Topaz occurs in a range of different colors like green, blue, pink, even colorless, but November birthstone is the yellow. Yellow Topaz is a gem that had been associated with the sun from long ago as the different colors of sun glows can be found in yellow topaz including orange yellow, amber gold and sherry red. Ancient Egyptians and Romans believed that topaz got its color from the golden rays of their respective sun gods, Ra and Jupiter.
The traditional sources of citrine are France, Scotland, Spain and Hungary in Europe. They have also been found in many countries around the world, such as Brazil, Uruguay, Russia and Sri Lanka and recently in many African countries. The most plentiful source of citrine can be found in Brazil. Queen Victoria of England (1819-1901) loved gemstones and was particularly fond of citrine because it was a local stone from Scotland. She initiated the fashion of wearing citrine jewelry. At that time too, citrine was often used to adorn kilt pins (Scottish skirt) and sword handles. Nowadays big jewelry brand names like Tiffany, Bulgari and others have a very good collection of jewelry from this wonderful gemstone.
The name derives from an island in the Red Sea “Topazios,” today called Zabargad. The island never produced topaz but was an ancient source of peridot while others trace the origin back to Sanskrit language which means fire. Two of the most important yellow kinds of topaz are “Sherry Topaz” which is brownish yellow or yellowish brown to orange. The name comes as its color resembles the color of sherry wine. The other kind is called “Imperial Topaz,” it is medium reddish orange to orange red. Brown, yellow, orange, sherry, and red topaz are found in Brazil and Sri Lanka.
Choosing between the two gemstones depends on the color preference and budget as citrine is less expensive and rarely found in nature compared to topaz.

This month could bring stressful times, with unexpected events surprising you seemingly out of the blue. As a Scorpio, you may be rooted in your ways, but it is important to make space for change. Focus on developing a new perspective on what is important in life. As challenging as this process may be, you will gain something amazing from it: a great sense of personal liberation and creative self-expression. Scorpio in a Nutshell Scorpio is the astrology sign of extremes and intensity. Scorpios are very deep, intense people; there is always more than meets the eye. They present a cool, detached and unemotional air to the world yet lying underneath is tremendous power, intense passion and a persistent drive. Scorpios have a very penetrative mind, do not be surprised if they ask questions, they are trying to delve deeper and figure things out. They are known to be controlling and too ambitious but only because they need control for this makes them feel safe. Scorpio in Love You are a passionate sign. One minute, you are aloof and mysterious, driving partners crazy as they vie for your ever-shifting attention. The next minute, you are in a committed long-term relationship. You are the sign that rules extremes and you can run hotter and colder than most. In relationships, you do not just commit, you fuse with the other person. For that reason, you are reluctant to dive in, because you know you will “lose yourself once you do. Although this concept gets a bad rap, it is actually an essential part of intimacy. Scorpio and Business Scorpios make excellent doctors, surgeons, scientists and leaders. They are perfectly suited to any form of business that makes a difference in the world, Scorpio has to be in a power position. In business, Scorpios tend to easily gather wealth, they make very wise business decisions and they are very conservative about spending their money. Scorpios are known for making money and hiding it, they will not announce it due to fear that others will take the same route and become a possible competitor. Scorpio and Friendship Relationships with Scorpio are always complicated, just like the person, their relationships are a series of extremes. Scorpios have an excellent memory and combined with an inability to let things go, they can hold a grudge against someone who did them harm forever, in fact a Scorpio rarely if never forgives and forgets. On the other hand, they will always remember a kind gesture forever and repay it. Their truthful and shocking sense of humor is different than that of any other zodiac sign and the Scorpio makes an amazing, powerful interesting friend that can be trusted. 94 | November 2013
