How do you know if a person is THE ONE?

S

ome say it takes years to know if someone is “The One,” others say it takes months, but I believe it nearly takes a minute, even less. When you meet your soul mate, with the first hello it hits you “Have I met you before?” and suddenly your brain and heart simultaneously answer, “No, but I never want to leave your side again.” Knowing deep inside that someone is the one at first sight doesn’t mean that you fell in love. Love is like a plant, it grows with time; it needs continuous nurture, care and love. Being scared does not also mean that someone is not the one. If a lifetime commitment is not scary, then what is? You’re going to live with someone other than your family members; someone with different traits, habits and attitude. Plus, it’s a huge responsibility; you’re taking care of someone other than yourself. And you don’t want to be frightened? However, the one is worth being scared with. If you are willing to cross oceans for someone, follow them wherever they go, to the crowdest of places, for you do not feel anything but the eminence of their presence; to the loudest of cities, for the echo of their voice abolishes all noises; to the largest, for the grace and svelte of their body, make all buildings shrink next to them, if you are willing to follow the scent of your love, no matter how wildly and randomly their choice is, then congratulations for finding something that even geniuses cannot define, true love, infinite love. To cut it short for you, ask yourself one question, “Am I willing to spend the rest of my life with this person?” Now listen closely, if you stutter, even if you hummed, then you have some serious thinking to do, because simply, if a person is “The One”, questions like these are answered faster than asking for your name. Never settle for a stuttering type of love; go for the extraordinary passionate kind, one that will break barriers and be written about in fairytales.

Zuhair Murad’s Spring 2014 Collection

W

ith his fabulous designs, Zuhair Murad is among the very few fashion designers, who manage to put the Middle East on the fashion map, becoming a favorite for celebrities around the world. Through his designs, you can truly capture the mystic beauty of Lebanon’s nature, his hometown, elegantly illustrated through the classiness of his talent. He started sketching at the young age of ten, while picturing these designs on his “imaginary clients,” and till now, year after year, he charms his way through the world of haute couture, making a living masterpiece out of each woman, who is lucky enough to dress in his creation. Murad’s latest collection, Spring 2014 Couture, is a conclusive evidence for his sophisticated creativity. “Smooth!” this is the word that comes to mind when seeing it. Through incorporating various shades of pastels together with pinch of gold and the forever intriguing black, and with the on spot embellishments and flowery details on sheer fabric, Murad has a complete cohesive collection with cuts and twists that are ready to flatter every woman’s body. 14 | May 2014

Once Upon a

Wedding Dress…

I

BY: NOHA KANDIL t’s that one piece of clothing that every girl dreams of. No matter how many times she goes shopping, no matter how many other beautiful dresses she owns, nothing feels quite like it. It’s that one dress she keeps looking for since she’s eight, it’s that one dress that she crosses borders for, and it’s also that one dress that she goes out of her ways to fit in (Brides-to-be will relate). Yes, you guessed it right; IT’S HER WHITE WEDDING DRESS! The question here is, what gave this dress such significance? Obviously, weddings mark the start of a new chapter for any couples’ life, and it’s the perfect wrap up for any love story. Yet, if so, what difference does it make what dress a bride wears? As long as she looks magnificent with the perfect man completing her look, does it really matter what dress she’s wearing? Or what color it is? Well, apparently it DOES Matter; whatever era it is, and whatever culture it is; a bride is a bride! So join us on a trip down bridal memory lane, and see how it all started…

The Pre-White! In the past, wedding dresses were quite different than our present time. Bridal gowns were generally more detailed forms of what women used to wear back then. In some cases, according to Hanne Black, the author of Virgin: The Untouched History, they wore the Best-looking dress that they have already owned. The most famous style back in the days was the Kirtle/Cotehardie style, which is a flowing full skirt, gathered around the waist with a fitted bodice. Moreover, as documented by many, wedding dresses came in all sorts of colors; Reds, purples, baby blue as a symbol for fertility, as well as green, although it was not preferable by some; in addition to BLACK, which was worn in case the groom was a widower, or in other cases as an indication for the bride’s humble background. On the one hand, the rich weddings/marriages back then were more of a business commitment bringing families together, in which the bride shows off her extravagant gown as a representation of her family’s social status, with rich materials, embroidery and fabric with silver or gold linings. While the less fortunate on the other hand had no choice but to copy those styles, but in cheaper materials of course, or they would simply go with their Sunday Church dresses. It was all about being practical back then. 16 | May 2014

The Origin Although it’s been reported that white wedding dresses has been worn before, it wasn’t until the Victorian era, when Queen Victoria of England broke the norm of the colors, and wore a white silk dress in her wedding to Prince Albert in 1840, that wearing white became a thing. Queen Victoria’s dress had no velvet, which was a common part of any prestigious gown back then; she wore no crown, no pearls and incorporated handmade lace instead in her short veil and skirt, which helped

boost the handmade Lace production industry as it was affected during the industrialization period back then. Generally, this era’s fashion was all about bigger silhouettes, with puffed sleeves and wide necklines. Perhaps it was her leadership status that made other nobilities wanted to follow in her footsteps. Among the royalties who wore white afterwards is Empress Eugenie in 1853 as well as Princess Alexandra of Denmark in 1863, who wore a white gown designed by Charles Frederick Worth, the father of Haute couture.

The Evolution Later on during the 19th century, the real popularization of the white wedding dress occurred during the rise of the middle class. Ladies from the middle class started looking up to royalties, and started imitating their styles; White wedding gown was the dress to have! By the end of the 19th century, silhouette has slimmed down (Thank GOD!), at least for the upper bodice and the sleeves, paving the road for the 20th century that marks the actual rise of Haute couture, as we know it. From the roaring 20s and its iconic free-flowing flapper style (does The Great Gatsby ring any bells?), to the rebellious 60s and its mini skirts, take a look back and enjoy the ride…>> May 2014 | 17

The Perfect

I

According to your Body Shape

t is much easier to dress and look your best when you understand the types of clothes that accentuate your body shape and size. And because we care that you look like a queen on your wedding day, we will inform you with the four main different body shapes and the dresses that suit each of them best, so you could finally stop wondering what dress will flatter that amazing body of yours most, and actually know once and for all. Triangle Also known as pear-shaped; it is the most common figure proportion for women. The widest part of your body is below your waist, around your hips. Remember, you can be tall, short, heavy, or skinny and still be pear shaped. If you’re a pear, your fashion goal is to balance your bottom half and upper half, taking the attention away from your hips so that you look less bottom-heavy. An A-line gown with a fitted bodice and a skirt that gently angles away from the body will highlight your figure’s strength. An empire gown will definitely do the trick as well, as this high-waisted style keeps the focus on a petite upper frame, while a flowing skirt creates a graceful line. Ball gowns will also flatter a slim upper body with a skirt that flows away from the hips and thighs.

Pnina Tornai For Kleinfeld Rectangle Rectangle body shapes, also known as straight-lined and athletic body shapes, are characterized by waist, hip and shoulder widths that are all similar to each other. Add the curves that you don’t have and create a sexy look with an A-line gown, which will create an hourglass shape with a style that nips in the waist and flows to a floor-length skirt, or wear an empire gown which creates the illusion of height, while hiding your hips. A sheath gown with a soft flowing fabric can create curves where they are needed.

Hourglass The hourglass body shape is round and curvy with a well-defined waistline, fuller hips and chest, and generous thighs. Hourglass shaped women have chest and hips with about the same size, and their waist is narrow. This gives them a set of sexy, killer curves. Just about any dress will go with your figure; however, in order to show off the benefits of this shape, go for a mermaid gown, which is a slim bodice and flared skirt providing a flattering counterpoint to strong and shapely shoulders. A ball gown with a structured bodice and full skirt will make you look elegant and feminine, or go with a sheath gown, which is slim from head to toe to show off your sexy figure.

theia Inverted Triangle As an inverted triangle, you have broad shoulders but narrow hips and a straight waist. Your bottom is flat and your bust is a variable part of the equation. You are a rare breed because the inverted triangle is the least common body type found amongst women. Marchesa Most models nowadays have an inverted triangle body shape. Balance your broad-shouldered frame with a ball gown, where it will create symmetry with wider shoulders, while a structured bodice will accent a trim waist. A short gown will balance your top half by drawing attention to your legs, while a mermaid gown with a slim bodice and flared skirt will provide you with a flattering counterpoint to strong and shapely shoulders.

Multi-way Dresses: I know you all want this princess full-length dress. However, you still want to show off those sexy legs. Here’s a trick, when designing your wedding dress, make the hoop skirt or attached train removable. Therefore, you could enter as royalty, then unleash this diva inside you and PARTY! Statement Jewelry: If you still want to play it safe, you can always style yourself with statement jewelry yasmine Yeya pharonic in collaboration with Sabry Marouf that will make you stand out! Even your tiara should stand out whether a unique design or a pop of color. And here are some inspirations to give you ideas: Vera Wang amazed us all with a super unique line, adding black details. If you are bold enough to include those details in the design, go ahead, or you can simply add it as an accessory. Carolina Herrera dared to step out of the classic white and explore pale pink as well. She played with different lengths as well, which would be perfect for afternoon or beach weddings.

BRIDAL BEAUTY COUNTDOWN WEDDING PREPS BY: AYAT SEIF EL NASR

edding beauty shouldn't only be on the day itself; it is better to start early to ensure you look your bridal best when you make your grand entrance. It is also important to have proper skin preparation to make certain your wedding makeup stays on the whole night. Beware of Summer months, because they can be brutal on your beauty efforts; a good skin care regimen is ideal to get your skin in perfect condition before the “Big Day.

rubbing to a minimum. A nightly application of eye cream, in addition to adequate sleep, will reduce the appearance of dark circles and a cool compress once or twice a week (or as needed) will help keep puffiness at bay. During the days before the wedding, reduce salty food intake, as it causes the eyes to look more swollen. Try Almond oil, peppermint oil, and black tea cooled in the fridge masks for your under eye area right before your bedtime.

Reveal your Inner Beauty at

KRISS BEAUTY SALONS “Women are inspiring enough!” This is how Kriss, the mastermind behind Kriss Beauty Salons, responds when asked about his main inspiration. He is a proud father of two kids, happily married to a beautiful lady, a partner in Kriss beauty salons, in addition to being a man of many dreams that would change the beauty industry in Egypt. Guided by women’s different looks and personalities, Kriss’s main aim is to give his customers the look that truly reflects their inner beauty. There are different types of faces out there, and every type is unique and beautiful in its own way, and he believes that there is a haircut that suits a face more than the other and shows off its natural curves. The way he sees it, hair is an accessory that can be played with, not to change how you look, but to give you a fresher one. Furthermore, there are brides who resort to extremes with their looks on their big day; consequently, when they go through their wedding photos after a year or two, they just don't recognize themselves from the intense hairstyle and makeup. From his rich experience, Kriss sees that the best way to avoid that, is through planning and setting the time line for everything, and this is actually the reason behind printing the third issue of Kriss Beauty Salons’ newsletter 'the wedding issue.' Bottom line, brides should stay original without losing their original beauty in the process. Moreover, it happens that many of the brides that he sits with don't have a clear vision of what they really want, and it’s his role to help them out. He simply sits with the bride and talk before the wedding to understand what she has in mind, and then he tries to see what's best for the shape of her face and what goes well with her dress. And later on, they meet for a rehearsal before the wedding so she can get a clearer idea of how she will look like on her big day. Finally, although he admits that he prefers working with bridal veils, as they give the bride a unique look and make her stand out from the rest of the crowd; still, Kriss can work his magic with every style you can think of, in addition to staying up-to-date with the latest trends of course, like the up do with loose big curls hair trend, which is his favorite for this season.

Faces of Egypt

Then later on, I travelled to Italy to study couture design at Accademia Italiana. HOW DID YOU REALIZE THAT FASHION IS WHAT YOU WANT TO DO? I started out as a painter with an interest in biological sciences. I started in pre-med, thinking I could be a plastic surgeon, because with that kind of medicine you have to be creative, but I realized I wasn’t being creative enough. Then I discovered the fashion design program, and I thought that I could approach fashion as an art. Instead of using paint, textiles will be my new medium.

Gizelle Begler

Fashion Designer and Founder of Gizelle Couture BY: NOHA KANDIL

A visionary fashion designer, an inspirational tutor, and above all, a very welcoming enthusiastic spirit, Gizelle sure got it all. “I was always an artist; I am not really a fashionista,” this is how Gizelle describes herself. From the classic old Hollywood inspiration in USA to overcoming the fear of over-designing in Italy, passing by the extreme embellishments of Kuwait, Gizelle has finally found peace with the moderateness of Egypt, and being half-Egyptian, it made perfect sense to start her own business here. “A tasteful display of excessive ornamentation,” this is what Gizelle Couture is all about. TELL ME MORE ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND? I was Born and raised in America. I studied Fiber Science and Apparel Design at Cornell University. It’s really important to be rounded as a designer, and Cornell provided me with that, in the sense that they taught us how to problem solve and think creatively. 44 | May 2014

I WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY BEFORE COMING TO CAIRO? I graduated top of my class, and worked for Giorgio Armani and Tommy Hilfiger. Then I got hired as a head designer for a 30-year-old company in New York that designs little girls’ dresses, which was a huge accomplishment because I was only 24. Things were going well, then I had an opportunity to design gowns for the royal family in Kuwait, and this was the first time I realized that the Middle East is the perfect market for me. Then I thought, I am half-Egyptian, so why not open my business in Cairo, where I can be personally happy. I AM CURIOUS TO KNOW, WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM ARMANI AND HILFIGER? GIVEN THAT THEY HAVE TOTALLY DIFFERENT STYLES FROM YOURS. Well, nothing is a loss. At Armani, I’ve learnt to appreciate quality and proper craftsmanship. I was working at the men’s wear department, and it gave me an appreciation for not going cheap with fabrics, because this makes all the difference when it comes to the simple men’s silhouette. At Tommy Hilfiger, I learned how an international design house operates, and how big intense process it is. HOW WAS YOUR TRANSITION TO CAIRO? I cried myself to sleep for the first two years. Communication was the hardest thing for me, as my Arabic was really bad. Now I speak broken regular Arabic, and very good Tarzy (Tailor) Arabic. The last six months was the first time I felt satisfied with my workers. I guess the hardest thing is finding someone who can translate your vision technically. Also, what’s good about here is that there aren’t many others who

do what I do, and the last five years fashion has become such a big deal in Egypt, which is another reason why I feel lucky. HOW DO YOU TRY TO APPEAL TO THE EGYPTIAN MARKET? I try to cater the Egyptian Market who appreciate special garments, and would otherwise, travel abroad to get a dress. I try to have hands-on process, during which the bride is involved in every step. I really want her to feel that it’s her gown, and that she has a say every step of the way. She needs to be happy, and that, from a business perspective, the only way I can be successful. And the other thing is of course having top quality fabrics and materials. HAVE YOU DONE ANY COLLABORATION OR PARTICIPATED IN ANY EVENTS LATELY? Last Spring, Marry Me Wedding Guide called me to do their cover. I’ve worked with Nola Cupcakes as well, and designed their Ramadan window. I am also collaborating with Jewelry Designer Mema El Shafey for an ancient Greek-inspired photoshoot in Fayoum. I do like to reach out to other entrepreneurs and collaborate with them. And I’ve also just displayed a collection of evening and wedding gowns in Cairo Fashion Festival. The collection is inspired by pastel fondant cakes, with fluffy happy colors for Springtime. FROM DESIGNING COUTURE GOWNS TO WINDOWS’ DISPLAYS, WHAT ELSE IS IN THE CARDS FOR GIZELLE COUTURE?

I’ve always wanted to help people, so my next project will be opening a non-profit school for unprivileged Egyptian people who want to learn to sew and pattern make on the highest level possible, because a couture gown sewer has the potential to earn a lot, especially with the current rise in fashion industry. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE FASHION SCENE IN EGYPT WITH NEW DESIGNERS COMING UP ALMOST EVERY DAY? There is a great potential out there, but I don’t see the proper schools here. Egypt has not yet reached the point to be considered an international fashion competitor, but there is hope in the coming generation for Cairo to be on the map as a fashion city.

Master the Rules of Décor Etiquette For Your New Home BY: Sally El Bardesy

N

ewly-weds should learn that décor is not only about how creatively you decorate and furnish your house, but it is also about being happy living in it, as well as making visitors feel welcomed. That is why décor etiquette is one important subject that you need to take into consideration. In the few lines below, we will talk about what décor etiquette means, going through all the details that will make your house look like a snapshot out of a magazine!

Door and Entrance If you want a really nice gesture for first time visitors, hang a mirror on the front side of the door and a welcome note; guests will love to check how they look before you open the door. A doormat is a must to wipe off any dirt; this will make the guests feel less worried about spoiling your house with shoes’ dirt. Also, don’t forget to install a good lighting effect; a yellow color light will be warm and appealing. Now when opening the door to let them in, it would be nice to have a wide-open simple decorated space, so that guests would have a clearer view to where they are leaded; so a minimum of three meters long and two meters wide is expected to provide this spacious entrance. However, putting a coat hanger, a mirror and a small pouf/chair, is still essential, as your guests may need to take off their coats, scarves, and check once again if they are in good form. This will make them avoid the embarrassment of asking where the restroom is immediately after coming in.

After a warm welcome at the entrance, and having them seated, here are some important tips to keep in mind: 48 | May 2014

Have tables around the seating area Big heavy middle tables are a big NO! Lounge tables should be simple in design and light in weight. It should not be so small in size, but rather medium. A 100 cm *60* is the range you should be looking for, and as much as you can try to avoid sharp edges, and placing dangling accessories on the table. Small side tables are a must! You will be offering drinks and food, plates, cups and napkins, so not having small corner tables or messing them with lot of displays will only leave your guests helpless with their plates or cups. Also, put into consideration their bags and phones or glasses, because dumping them on the floor next to them is not what they expect on their visit, and it won’t look very nice. >> May 2014 | 49

Kids and Elderly Sadly, only few people put the elderly and kids into consideration. How sweet it would be when you have tiny stools or poufs for the kids, and a convenient comfy seat that is high and hard to handle old people? It will sure make their visit much more restful. Moreover, beware not to go so modern with low seats and super soft upholstery. Guests shouldn’t sink in your sofa or need you to help them up when they stand.

Cushions and Seats Each seat must have one medium full cushion. So a three-seat sofa needs three 45*45 cm cushions. I believe we all have struggled at least once or twice with too many cushions to sit in-between, so please avoid that over-the-top habit.

Furthermore, nowadays we tend to be attracted to styles that combine different shapes and sizes of furniture. We all love to go with trends; however, one seating level should be maintained well. Nobody should be seated lower or higher than the level of the rest. Also, when installing the lighting spots, make sure no lampshades are placed too close to the head level, because that will be annoying to the guests sitting. Now here are some other tips you should avoid to ensure your guest is happy, restful and pampered. Do not switch on the TV if placed in the seating area; all attention should be kept for the company you have over, yet in some cases, it could be a source of entertainment for small kids. Flowers are also a must! That’s the norm, and yes, it gives a nice cheerful feeling, but don’t put it in the middle of the lounge table. It’s better to keep it up high at one corner or on a shelf. Finally, the room, the pathway and the nearest bathroom must be well lit. This keeps the guests feeling safe and secure, and they won’t have to battle their way around.

Q&A

LADYBIRD’S You Ask, Experts Answer! 1

Dr. Yancey Holmes

Endocrinology

I always feel very fatigued, light headed, and overall sick after eating and have already been checked for low blood sugar. What could be wrong? Doctor’s Answer:

Low cortisol or weak adrenal function can produce these symptoms but usually does result in low blood sugar as well. Another potential cause is autonomic dysfunction. Lastly, if you still have your gall bladder you may have atypical disease that needs investigating.

3

Dr. Catherine Willner Neurology

Help please. When I sit and stand up, I feel dizzy and see black spots everywhere. What could it be? Doctor’s Answer: Orthostatic; term for going to upright (from supine or lying) to sitting or to standing - if you are dehydrated or have low blood pressure for other reasons, or if you are nervous and cardiovascular systems cannot compensate for the change to upright, you can experience the symptoms you describe. Have PCP check “orthostatic blood pressures and heart rate” for best recommendations. There could be other causes.

2

Dr. Beth R. Friedland Ophthalmology

Is it okay to smoke if you have an eye infection? Doctor’s Answer:

No! Even if you do smoke and have been smoking for years and trying to quit, it is much better for your immune system if you refrain from smoking during an eye infection. Studies have shown that even the equivalent of 1-2 cigarettes a day reduces the immune response to infection and makes it harder to clear the infection.

4

Dr. Raymond A. Wittstadt Hand Surgery

Can anemia cause finger numbness? Doctor’s Answer:

Not usually. Anemia is too few red blood cells; this lowers your oxygen carrying capacity of your blood. As a result of this your heart and lungs need to work harder to circulate your blood. This should not cause finger numbness. However, if you are breathing faster than normal, this can cause some extremity numbness. If this keeps up, get it checked out.

5

Dr. Kelty R. Baker Hematology

Lately, I’ve been hearing my heartbeat in my right ear. When this happens, I can sort of feel it in my ear as if the blood vessel is pumping and pushing against something. Help! Doctor’s Answer:

I have heard patients complain about an audible heartbeat most commonly when they are anemic. It can also commonly occur with high blood pressure. Under rare circumstances it can be due to a vascular tumor near the eardrum. Please see a doctor and ask them to check your blood pressure, complete blood count, and auditory canal. If these are normal, further investigation will be needed.

7

Dr. Adam Tripp Psychiatry

I had a panic attack the other night out of nowhere, and have been experiencing separation anxiety. Then I started my period. Could my period be causing it? Doctor’s Answer:

Periods don’t cause panic attacks, but you may feel more emotional, and therefore prone to panic attacks just before your period. This is known as premenstrual dysphoric disorder, and is treated with SSRIs like celexa, prozac, zoloft, and paxil just like panic disorder. See a psychiatrist or your PCP to discuss if starting an SSRI would be a good fit for these symptoms.

My 15 month old choked on water 3 times in the bathtub while trying to drink the water. Could he be at risk for dry drowning? Doctor’s Answer:

The entity of dry drowning is not something that has been reliably verified as a clinical entity. If your child choked on water in the bathtub while trying to drink it but did not suffer a pronged period of submersion, loss of consciousness, loss of respiratory effort or loss of pulse, and is not having trouble breathing currently, then it is unlikely to lead to adverse problems.

How to incorporate the SS’14 sporty trend in your wardrobe? Expert’s Answer:

The athletic look is making a big impact for spring as seen at Jimmy Choo, Kenzo and other high-end designers. Mix a retro sneaker, haute gym tote and a casual sporty watch to achieve this look! Brooks Running just launched Brooks Heritage, their retro sneaker line for spring, which is based off their original 1976 running sneaker. The metallic details on this shoe add to the glam factor. A Longchamp tote comes in a multitude of colors to match any outfit or any mood! The nylon is in keeping with the sporty trend; the leather detailing takes it up a notch. Matching an accessory like a Marc by Marc Jacobs watch to your shoe, even with a sporty trend, will pull the whole look together!

When JEALOUSY Takes its Toll on You

JEALOUSY! It’s such a powerful word that could alter the course of a whole relationship. It’s such

a prevailing feeling that can consume too much of you, up till the point it’s forever lost. Although some may argue that it’s a sign for a healthy relationship that adds a little seasoning for a couple’s love life, others believe it can shatter it to pieces. Just like anything in life, too much of everything isn’t good. In a 1922’s article, Freud describes jealousy saying, “The instances of abnormally intense jealousy met within analytic work reveal themselves as constructed of three layers. The three layers or grades of jealousy may be described as (1) competitive or normal, (2) projected, and (3) delusional jealousy.” In this article, we will be discussing morbid jealousy, which is often described as delusional. Being jealous can take its toll on you and on your loved ones, especially if it’s uncontrollable and overly delusional, like in the case of morbid jealousy. 64 | May 2014

The main thing that differentiates morbid jealousy from normal jealousy is that it could be overly obsessive and uncontrollable by those who suffer from it, and is also based on false conclusions. According to a study conducted by the Department of Psychology, The University of Texas, morbid jealousy is often accompanied with irrational thoughts related to the patient’s partner fidelity that could lead to extreme behaviors with serious consequences. In addition, referring to Consultant Forensic Psychiatrists Michael Kingham and Harvey Gordon in their article Aspects of Morbid Jealousy, that type of jealousy is usually magnified due to the person’s illusions and doubts that are usually associated with thoughts of sexual infidelity. In case of morbid jealousy, such doubts are not based on solid evidence, and even when they are proven wrong, they feel more confident going with their conclusions. Consequently, the resulted behavior and actions are considered a waste of time. Furthermore, in an article titled Facets of Morbid Jealousy: With an anecdote from the historical Tamil romance, posted on the “Indian Journal of Psychiatry,” Mullen’s work, a prominent professor in the field, helps us better understand what may be behind this state of jealousy. As stated in the article, Mullin classifies morbid jealousy into two main categories, Symptomatic jealousy and Reactive jealousy. While Symptomatic jealousy is usually associated with a mental disorder that arises before, or with the jealousy, Reactive jealousy is more associated with an individual’s fears that arises through their low selfesteem and insecurity, or from their fear from their partner’s unfaithfulness. Reactive jealousy can also be generated through various provocative situations, or as a result of past experience that involved infidelity.

DISORDERS THAT ARE REPORTEDLY ASSOCIATED: • • • • • • •

Borderline Personality disorder Paranoia Attachment disorders Delusional and Schizophrenic disorders Toxic or Organic Cerebral disorders Neurotic disorders Functional Psychosis

DON’T TRIGGER IT! Referring to Kingham’s and Gordon’s work, rivalry is at the core of morbid jealousy. It’s the notion of the existence of a potential threat, which doesn’t really exist, that triggers all the irrationality behind their thoughts. Also, going back to The University

of Texas, research has shown that the perception of rivalry differs between men and women; thereby the jealousy’s triggers may vary between both genders. According to evolutionary scientists’ research, men feel threatened by those who have more than them in terms of money and acquisitions; while women’s jealousy is rather triggered when a rival demonstrate better physical attributes and higher level of attractiveness. However, it’s worth mentioning, this theory could be applied on normal forms of jealousy, not just morbid jealousy. In addition to this theory, research has also shown that sexual infidelity is a more common trigger for men suffering from morbid jealousy, while for women, emotional infidelity is a more common generator for their jealousy.

SYMPTOMS Individuals who suffer from morbid jealousy show a various range of behaviors that could be described as extreme sometimes. Delusions are among the most common symptoms; individuals become slaves to their own thoughts and doubts. They might believe they are subject to a threat, and that their partners are trying to harm them. Sufferers also show obsessive behaviors. They start spending too much time thinking about their concerns over and over again. They try to force boundaries and limitations to what their partner can do, and what’s acceptable and not, which of course could ruin any relationship. In some extreme case, morbid jealousy may lead to crimes; people with morbid jealousy may harm themselves and those around them as well.

TREATMENT Just like similar types of illnesses with psychiatric grounds, medicines could be subscribed, like antidepressants and anti-psychotics pills. If it’s associated with a mental disorder, then that should be treated first; maybe through cognitive therapy. Moreover, in extreme cases, in which risk might be involved, hospitalization might be the best solution.

The Jealous are troublesome to others, but a torment to themselves.

IT’S OUT OF CONTROL!

7 Couple Dancing Reasons you Should Try BY: NATASCIA PAOLUCCI

Couple dancing has always held a special place in weddings. It requires practicing the steps of choreography, the careful choice of music and the even more delicate choice of a partner (yes, the person you are actually marrying). After all, there is a good reason that all the guests look at the couple’s first dance. They are witnesses to a secular tradition… that yields much more benefits that you may think! Now, here are the seven reasons you should never stop dancing:

1 3

It increases your strength: The ways in which ballroom dancing contributes to strength buildup are many. First, it forces the dancer’s muscles to resist against his or her own body weight. For example, ballroom dancing involves the use of quick turns, spinning and strutting. Second, acrobatic dances require from the carrying dancer that S/he build up their leg muscle strength during the times when they must lift their partners. Generally, ballroom dancing works the backs of the thighs and buttock muscles differently from many other types of exercises.

It increases your flexibility:

2

While women are generally more flexible than men by nature, both can benefit from ballroom dancing’s provision of more flexibility. The reason for this is that many of these dance steps automatically call for moves that necessitate a lot of stretching and bending. Besides, when you join a ballroom dancing class, you will find that it will likely begin with quite a few stretching exercises just to protect against injury, as well as to prepare your body to be able to do the dance steps with greater ease.

66 | May 2014

It increases endurance:

By increasing heart rate, dancing becomes de facto a cardio type of workout. As such, by extending the music’s duration or by adding up songs, you are increasing the capability of your muscles (including the heart) to work harder for longer and longer stretches of time without succumbing to fatigue. The intensity that you’re required to put into ballroom dancing makes this form of exercise a particularly potent means of building up your endurance. Each time you dance with a partner and work on your quick steps, lifts or twists and turns, you are conditioning yourself to be able to do these with less and less fatigue.

4

It may encourage weight loss:

Many will ask how many calories can dance burn. I don’t like these questions because they do not capture all the benefits from workout. Also, it greatly depends on the type of dance, your physical condition and how vigorously you engage in the activity. In general, however, dancing counts as a “moderate activity”. Physicians recommend that you get at least of 30 minutes of such kind of activity per day. What really counts towards weight loss though is that it is a fun workout that is more likely to encourage participants to practice regularly. Who said you had to suffer to look good?

5

It is not only a workout for your muscles but also for your brain:

Technically speaking, it all comes from increasing blood flow to your brain. And a betterirrigated brain is a better performing one. Also, this means that you produce endorphins, which relieves from stress and fights depression. Last but not least, the active analysis of your situation (in time with the music and in space on the dance floor with respect to your partner) and memorizing of steps, represent challenges that increase your mental capacities.

6

It may contribute to building a healthy image of yourself:

By learning to control every part of your body, you also learn to know and accept yourself. You also feel beautiful in the eyes of your partner, which encourages your self-esteem.

7

It preserves collaboration:

romance

and

By engaging in a regular physical activity with your partner, you learn to know, understand and accept each other better. You practice communicating. You rapidly become a team, with its own secret codes and spirit. This nourishes the spark of the beginnings and brings you closer, literally and figuratively.

So, instead of watching “Dancing With the Stars” on TV, get up and steal the dance floor, even if that means your living room. That’s the best part of dancing for a workout. It does not require any special equipment; it does not require any specific place. All you need is your partner. Let it be the partner of your life.

Bridal YOGA

Strengthen • Beautify • Relax BY: JAIME EL HELW

N

o doubt, planning a wedding can be exhausting; however, practicing yoga can alleviate some of that stress. Yoga uses "asanas" or poses as tools to help practitioners discover their inner power. Also, regular yoga practice would give long and lean definition to your body, help tone your upper back and waistline, and can prevent facial breakouts through its detoxifying properties. The result is that you'll end up looking and feeling great on your wedding day!

Before starting, you must focus on maintaining calm and steady breathing (inhale and exhale through the nose). Listen to your body, and take a rest whenever you need to. HERE ARE SOME FABULOUS POSES FOR BEGINNER BRIDES (AND GROOMS TOO!):

Downward Facing Dog: • Begin on your hands and knees. Your wrists should be underneath your shoulders, and your knees should be underneath your hips. • Inhale as you tuck your toes under your heels. Then exhale to lift your hips, coming into an upside down "V" shape called Downward Facing Dog. • Spread your fingers wide, and create a straight line between your middle fingers and elbows. • Work on straightening your legs and lowering your heels toward the ground. • Relax your head between your arms, and direct your gaze through your legs or up toward your belly button. Hold for five breaths.

Warrior Pose: • From Downward Facing Dog, step your right foot forward between your palms, and come back to Warrior 1. • Extend your arms out in T position as you rotate your torso to the left, coming into Warrior 2. Ideally, your front thigh should be parallel to the ground and your right knee directly over your right ankle. Make sure your shoulders are stacked directly above your pelvis. • Gaze past your right fingertips, and hold for five breaths. Then return to Downward Facing Dog. Step your left foot forward, and do this pose on the other side.

68 | May 2014

Triangle Pose: • From Downward Facing Dog, step your right foot forward for Warrior 1, and open up into Warrior 2. • Straighten your right leg and turn your left toes slightly to the right, making a 45-degree angle. Keep both legs straight as you reach your right hand straight out over your right leg. Lower your right hand, resting it on your right shin or a block, or place your palm flat on the floor. Extend your left arm straight up, and gaze at your left fingertips. • Stay like this for five deep breaths. Then lift your torso up and switch sides. Step your left foot forward between your hands, and repeat this pose on the left side.

Side Plank Pose: • After coming through Downward Dog pose, sit down on your mat. • Move your left hand over to the right so it's at the center of your mat (still at the top of your mat). Roll over to your left side, and plant your left heel down so you are balancing on the outside edge of your left foot, stacking your flexed feet. • Reach your right arm up above you, and, if you can, gaze up at your palm. Stay here for five deep breaths, trying to keep your core strong and the pose steady. • Lower your upper hand to the mat. Repeat this pose on the other side.

Bow Pose: • After moving through Side Plank Pose on both sides, lower your hips to the ground slowly and lie on your belly. • Bend your knees, reach back with your hands, and hold onto the outside edge of your right ankle and then your left. • Once you have a firm hold of each ankle, try to keep your toes together, either pointing or flexing your feet. Lift your feet up as high as you can, and shift your weight forward so you're resting on your naval instead of on your pubic bone. • Hold for five deep breaths, and then slowly release.

Camel Pose: • From Bow Pose, come toward the top of your mat so your knees are under your hips. Reach your right hand back toward your right heel, and then reach your left hand toward your left heel. • Your hands are there for balancing support, so don't lean all your weight onto them. Try to shift your weight forward onto your knees, which will increase the stretch in your quads, belly, and chest. • Lower your head behind you, and stay here for five breaths.

Corpse Pose: Finally, you can wrap up your practice with the most relaxing pose, during which you lay down with your eyes closed, opening your body fully for some relaxing time.

Do you suffer from yellow teeth?

Fix with Food

If you suffer from yellow teeth and want to have brighter and whiter teeth, start chewing on apples. They help scrub your teeth. Your Bridal Manual to a Healthy Ever After BY: NOURA HASSABALLA

ou fell in love, got married, and the next thing you noticed is the 10 extra Kgs on your hips and thighs. Wait! It doesn’t end there, it also becomes contagious; husbands might get infected! Generally, in the Egyptian culture, if you’re a new bride, you have to know how to cook. Sorry let me rephrase that, “Your cooking has to be somewhat like your mother in law’s,” otherwise you automatically become unqualified as a good cook. Cooking like the old generation usually means using butter, oils, and lots of the good full fat stuff. I have been getting many calls from clients saying, “Please help me I have put on so much weight right after my wedding.” This is the trap almost every girl falls into after the big day. It’s so many things together; let’s point them out one by one: • Losing weight two or three months before the wedding so fast the wrong way. • Pigging out on the honeymoon. • You start to mimic your husband’s eating habits whether it’s good or bad. The feeling of sharing everything “because we are one” takes over. • The feeling of challenge and having to win his heart by your cooking. • Waiting for him to come home so you can eat together, which means having your main meal past 7pm. • Becoming less active. • Family gatherings (unhealthy food). • The wrong concept of “I’ve got him, no need to impress him.” Now let’s take a look at the type of foods that leads to weight gain. During family gathering, and if you have to invite people over, usually it is the stuffed grape leaves with lots of butter and all types of fried foods; even the soup is literally 50% grease. And don’t forget the 500-calorie piece of baklava for dessert, which is usually served within a half hour after you’ve stuffed yourself that you can’t even breathe. So how about changing your cooking habits? You can still have the same type of food but in a healthier way, through these little substitutions that will make a difference in your life: 72 | May 2014

• If you are using butter, switch to olive oil, rice oil, or any type of healthier oil options that you have in the supermarket. • Step it up a notch and add some variety to your menu. You can still make the stuffed grape leaves, but instead of using white rice use brown rice and add some grated veggies while you’re at it; this way you lowered the calorie content of that dish and added some health benefits. • Don’t fry your poultry, meat, or whatever protein you will be serving. Instead, try spraying some oil and shove it in the oven. • Green salad doesn’t have to be soaked in dressings; use the sprinkling method. Add some bulgur, quinoa, or wild rice. Trust me the effect of these types of food on your blood sugar will be very minimal compared to croutons and potatoes salad. • If you are a soup lover, make it your way. You like it creamy? That’s fine, but make sure you’re using light cream or light dairy products. • Use spices and lemon juice instead of salt. Don’t forget that the number one reason for water retention in your body is due to high sodium intake and not drinking enough water to flush it out. • You can still have your homemade banana split, but this time you won’t be using ice cream. Try using fruit sorbet or low-fat frozen yogurt with some toasted nuts. Know that YOU are the one who is in control of your own choices, so choose the healthy ones.

Season your quick lunch at Indira,

Holiday inn Cairo Citystars

F

rom that first sip of your lassie until you linger over the final spoonful of homemade kulfi ice cream, a meal at Indira is a wonderful and satisfying exploration of fine Indian dining. Chef Vikram Ghorpade, the guardian of Indira’s cuisine, has added a ‘quick lunch’ menu to tempt you into escaping for a meal high in taste and value. Indira’s atmosphere is unquestionably Indian, but with a subtle Asian influence to create a chic and contemporary feel. There is none of the overblown ‘Bollywood’ style of décor that can lay a heavy hand on Indian restaurants. Aaah! The food. While enjoying the lassie – a yoghurt and mango drink – and sampling the spicy chutneys with poppadoms, your eyes will wander through the menu. From starter dish of Indira’s mixed Tandoori of prawns, chicken, the tender lamb ‘popsicles’ and vegetable samosa with raita and tamarind dips, your stomach will beg you to stop, but you won’t listen! Because alongside sat a basket of glazed naan bread that glistened irresistibly under the lights, waiting for you to indulge in. Moreover, Chef Vikram is always ready to ‘adjust the heat’ to suit Egyptian and European taste, with reasonable prices. The main menu is packed with stars. The classic lamb Rogan Josh, Goscht Vindaloo –

some like it hot! – a mixed seafood curry, Dal Makhani and Dal Tadka veggie curries, jumbo prawns in the Jhinga Masala, the gorgeously creamy Chicken Korma. The beauty of Chef Vikram’s cuisine, to which he adds his special gravies and sauces, lies in the distinct and delectable flavours he brings to his dishes. Compared with the intricacies of spices and their subtle nuances of aroma and taste, preparing rice may seem deceptively simple, but we have all endured rice that cloys and refuses to separate. However, Indira’s Jhinga Biryani is just perfect, as each grain seemed to tumble individually around the succulent prawns, with a rose water fragrance, that adds a wonderful touch to the plate. Furthermore, many more trips will be required to enjoy the Machi Pakoras (marinated shrimps, spices and herbs), Murgh Malai (chicken breast in creamy cheese sauce with spices) or the Kachumber of fresh tomatoes, onions, cucumber, herbs and lemon juice. Happily, no great sense of exploration is necessary to find Indira, which is located at Holiday Inn Cairo Citystars, or you could simply follow the fragrant aroma of spices through the Citystars Mall to its location handily placed near Gate 7 on Level 0.

Are you Getting Married for the Right Reasons BY: NOHA KANDIL The Beginning

Chapter Three

She finally gave in to her friends’ endless nagging, and decided to give this new partying venue a try; it was a new pop in New Cairo; the “PLACE TO BE!” It was a long distance away from her home, and most importantly away from her comfort zone. It was supposed to be a casual laidback hangout with her friends, except that she felt everything, but laidback. She knew she is going to have hard time fitting in -she always does- and it took her forever to pick an outfit that night. She thought that if she at least looked like the rest, no body would notice how misplaced she felt.

The phone rang again, IT WAS HIM. He didn’t need to introduce himself, his mental picture was just lying at the back of her head. “You had me at hello,” she recalls the unforgettable line from her favorite movie Jerry Maguire. They talked for a little while, he asked her out, and she said YES! Even though the word “date” has never been a part of her dictionary, or her traditional Egyptian family’s dictionary, she said yes. They went on a date the next day, and a second one a week after, and before she knows it, they were celebrating their sixmonths’anniversary. On that day he took her back to the place where they first met; only now, it was totally different for her; she was no longer misplaced. She visited the ladies’ room, but it was no longer an escape. He was her escape. She stood there staring at the very same mirror that she didn’t even bother to look at the first time. She couldn’t recognize herself; she almost panicked. Again, she fought her thoughts, and got out to people standing on their feet. He was on his knee with a diamond ring, sparkling and waiting to flatter her finger. He proposed, she said YES!

Chapter One Between the loud music, and her friends dancing, she tried to find an escape through her fake texting on the phone, and recurrent visits to the ladies’ room. An hour goes by, and all of a sudden, he comes in, with his unfamiliar yet comforting presence. It was a formal evening, so all the men were in suits and ties, but he stood out. He stood out in his all-white suit, and for her, a man in white is equivalent to a lady in red, although many disagree. He was a friend of a friend, and right away he fitted in. All the girls went all sassy around him, but silence was her shield; it was her defense mechanism; however, her thoughts were so loud. She couldn’t help observing him without him noticing; she put down her phone, and HE became her ESCAPE. The way he spoke, his smile, and uhh, THE SUIT! Then BAM! She was brought back to reality when the waiter asked her if she needed a drink. “Thank GOD my thoughts are mute,” she thought to herself…

Chapter Two The night was finally over. The next morning, she was overwhelmed with the feeling of shame. Yes, SHAME! She was sickened by her thoughts the night before. She saw herself as lame and pathetic; then she was “saved by the bell.” A phone call ended her self-beating ride. It was perhaps the most confusing phone call she has ever received. It was her friend, telling her that the guy, who was her escape for the night, has asked for her number. She couldn’t believe it! And a storm of questions went shuffling through her head. “Did he notice my silence?” “Was it intriguing for him?” “But why me?” “Is that some kind of practical joke?” “Is it a secret bet or something?” Her insecurities were magnified… 76 | May 2014

Chapter Four Time flew, one month to go for the big day. She noticed her thoughts are becoming dimmer and dimmer; something felt odd. She knew she’s living a fairytale, yet something was missing. Then suddenly, she starts remembering. She recalls a phone call she had with her best friend the night before; the night before she first saw him; she remembers the real reason why she agreed on going out in the first place.“You’ll never get married,” she recalls her friend’s words.“What if you ended up alone?” “Look around you, everybody is hooking up, and what have you been doing lately? NOTHING.” It’s all coming back to her now. She recalls her mother trying to get her to marry her third cousin, and she visualizes the sympathetic looks her aunt gave her at her youngest cousin’s wedding. It finally hit her! It’s like someone slapped her on the face. She wasn’t in love. It was nothing but an ESCAPE from the beginning. The big day has arrived; it was their first dance, all eyes were on her. All her family and friends gathered to crown her “fairytale.” Her thoughts were never louder, she wanted to run away, but it was too late; she was trapped! She faked a smile, put her head on his shoulder, and thought to herself, “Thank GOD my thoughts are mute...”

It was NOTHING but an ESCAPE from the begining.

Love & Relationships

Bettina Knows Best…

Is Your Mother-In-Law Getting on Your Nerves? Dear Bettina,

M

y mother in law has been giving me a hard time. No matter how hard I try to win her over, I am always misunderstood; she mistakenly thinks that I am trying to turn her son against her or something. Recently, she has been trying to interfere in any way possible. She calls me, and asks me about things concerning our private life, and I feel I have to tell her what she wants, without her son knowing! I understand that it’s her only son but I just want to live my life peacefully. So please tell me, how can I make things better? Sincerely, A Newlywed

BY: BETTINA HEMMINGSEN Dear Newlywed, It seems to me that in your attempt to build a good relationship with your MIL you compromise your integrity by telling her about your private life and keep it as a secret from your husband. This unintentional pattern will only create more drama in the relationship with your MIL and result in conflicts in your marriage. If you wish your relationship to be based on mutual love and respect you must keep an open and honest communication. In a healthy relationship, couples deal with their in-laws as a team and set clear boundaries. They’re able to have open conversations with their spouse about their needs. They listen and sympathize with each other’s feelings and create a plan that both of them agrees with. Most newlywed couples are very vulnerable to the attitudes and opinions of others. This makes it even more important to understand the dynamic between in-laws and how to build a strong and healthy relationship. I suggest you and your husband spend some time talking things through and agree on some terms that are acceptable to both of you. The next time your MIL calls, acknowledge all the love and attention you know she is trying to give you and describe the discomfort you feel by letting her in on things without your husband’s knowledge. Assure her that she will be informed in due time and by mutual agreement between you and your husband.

Good luck, Bettina 78 | May 2014

BOND WITH AND NURTURE YOUR YOUNG CHILD THROUGH YOGA

M

others are constantly searching for new, most importantly, beneficial techniques to bond with their child; however, after several outings or activities, quality time with your child seem to repeat itself falling in the trap of your child getting bored and not benefiting much after all. But what if we told you that there is a creative, nurturing and beneficial way to bond with your child; something that doing over and over again will never get old due to the diversity it holds in benefiting you and your child’s mind, soul and body. You probably guessed it by now, it is yoga! Parent and child yoga class deliver the same benefits of any yoga class: strength, balance, flexibility, and relaxation. With a focus on improving the quality of breath and energy control, yoga enhances relaxation and teaches self-calming skills. For young babies in particular, there is evidence to suggest that regular practice of these learned movements can help alleviate some of the common ailments experienced in the first year such as colic. It can also help strengthen their immune system and improve their sleep patterns. For older babies, the social nature of these activities can play a key role in the early achievement of children's critical developmental milestones. Additionally, they can aid in improving a child’s self-awareness and emotional intelligence, thereby helping them to become a more welladjusted child in the later years of their life. Luckily, for the first time in Egypt, we have a one of a kind Mother and Child Movement and Wellness Center called FLOW, which offers a diverse range of yoga classes to women, as well as tailored classes for children ages 1 month to 5 years old. FLOW center highlights the numerous benefits that Infant Massage, Baby Yoga, and Toddler Yoga classes can offer new mothers who are looking to bond with and nurture their young children. FLOW offers an intimate environment where mothers learn hands-on, specialized massage and yoga techniques that can help stimulate the development of their child during the early formative years. Through FLOW, you and your child will be offered all classes with complete credibility, as three young mothers founded the center, Jaime El Helw, Mariam Kamel and Rania El Masry. In addition, all instructors at the center are internationally certified through the Birthlight Foundation in the UK. Get to know the classes that will benefit you and your child, which are all available at FLOW:

YOGA AND MASSAGE Infant Massage: Infant massage classes are designed for new mothers and their young babies, generally pre-crawling age between 1 to 6 months old. Mothers perform a soothing rhythmic massage on their babies to help calm the baby. Mothers are encouraged to try post-natal recovery exercises for pelvic floor and abdominal muscle toning, spinal re-alignment, which helps them de-stress. Ultimately, the class helps to enhance the mother’s communication and understanding of her baby’s needs. Baby Yoga: Here mothers support their babies in performing a set of yoga-based stretches, poses, and movements to enhance the physical, cognitive, and emotional development of their children. The yoga sequences are performed with interactive rhymes and songs. Toddler Yoga: Toddler Yoga is an advanced class for children who are walking, toddler yoga classes are designed for children from the age of 18 months to 4 years. In these classes, mothers engage with their children through more active yoga sequences.

FitTots: Emphasizing the importance of fitness and healthy habits during the former stages of childhood, FitTots offers classes for children between the ages of 3 to 5 focusing on fitness moves that develop physical endurance, strength, agility, balance and coordination.

WOMEN’S YOGA In addition for all the above classes, there is a power yoga class to all women, which focuses on toning the body and channeling and renewing energy.

BENEFITS OF INFANT MASSAGE For babies, receiving massage can: • Stimulate mental and physical development • Relieve common physical symptoms • Strengthen the immune system For moms, giving massage can: • Enhance communication and understanding • Accelerate the bonding process • Counteract post-natal depression • Boost self-esteem and confidence levels

BENEFITS OF BABY YOGA

The family classes enhance language and listening skills for the older babies and toddlers, as they are encouraged to be more self-aware and reflective.

For babies, yoga can: • Accelerate emotional, intellectual, and physical development and improve strength • Increases sociability through parallel movements and interactive songs

Music & Moves: Early enjoyment of music and dance develops a child's imagination and creativity. The baby music class, for ages 6 to 15 months, is fun and stimulating, and combines song, story and exploration of basic instruments.

Welcome To Spring with

GORGEOUS GREEN EMERALDS BY: NIVINE MUKHTAR “Rare, radiant and valuable,” these are the characteristics of the emerald which is May’s birthstone. Emerald is famous for its distinctive green color as green is a symbol of life, lush, hope, tranquility, and joy of the Spring. The color green gives a relaxing and soothing effect just as looking to grass fields and breathing its air freshness. The name emerald comes from the old French word 'esmeralde', which was derived from the Greek word 'smaragdos' meaning 'green stone'. Emerald comes in various shades of green. The more vivid the green, the more valuable the gemstone is. Egypt was the earliest known location for emerald mining, that took place in southern Egypt near the Red Sea, dating back to 330 B.C. Cleopatra was fascinated by emeralds and she used it in her royal adornments. It was said that she had her own mines in Egypt and that she often sent emeralds as gifts to rulers of other lands. These mines known as “Cleopatra Mines” were already being exhausted long ago, before they were rediscovered in the early 19thcentury. In the 16th century the history of emerald became deadly serious when Spanish conquistadors discovered the Chivor and Muzo mines in Colombia. They enslaved the natives to work in these mines, and then transported thousands of emeralds to Spain as part of the treasure of the New World. Throughout history emeralds were valued and appreciated by royalties. The largest collection of emeralds is said to belong to the crown jewels of Iran. One of the most largest and spectacular emeralds is called the “Mogul Emerald.” It is a rectangle cut emerald that weighs 217.8 carats and about 10 cm high. One side is engraved with Islamic prayers and the other side is engraved with floral designs. It is of Colombian origin with a dark green color and it has been cut, polished and sold in India to one of the Mughal Emperor. Christie’s Auction House sold it in 2001 to an anonymous buyer for 2.2 million US dollars. At present, it is in the possession of the Museum of Islamic Art, Qatar. The three major sources for emeralds are Colombia, which produces the finest emeralds with its deep green color, then Brazil and Zambia. Other sources are USA, Afghanistan, Zimbabwe, Russia, and Pakistan. Emerald jewelry is a timeless statement of beauty, glamor and elegance.
