For the Authenticity of Love

o matter where life takes me; no matter how much I change; and no matter how many times I lose sight, the one thing that stays genuine is my love to my mother. You see, throughout your life you’ll notice that people come and go, even the ones you thought were part of you, and it’s normal, and even though it hurts, you are aware that it’s the way life functions. However, a mother never abandons your side, although you might do, but she never will, and sadly but true, we take it for granted. Recently, I was playing this game called “The Samurai Game;” it’s about honor, values, principles and setting priorities. In order to learn the lessons behind the game, one must go to war disguised in a samurai, a true warrior. Anyways, before entering the game, you must leave a letter behind. According to the game, this letter is what you leave before you die, and it must be directed to one person only. As I stood there in front of an empty piece of paper, I thought for a minute about all the important people in my life, who really matters and who really doesn’t. And it was really simpler than you might think it is to set your priorities straight. However, what I wasn’t hesitant about in that minute is who I’ll direct my letter to, and without a doubt it was my one and only, my mother. The letter included the following: “Thank you. These may seem like two simple words, but they summarize a lot. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I wouldn’t have been the person I’m proud of today, if it wasn’t for you pushing me to the edge because you knew my potential, if it wasn’t for your hardcore belief in me and if it wasn’t for your endurance. Now that I am might be far away from the warmth of your arms forever, I know I wouldn’t miss much, because a touch from you lasts within me for hundreds of years. There is a certain affection mom, and it is yours, that one cannot simply neglect, even if I’m in another dimension than yours. In the end, I ask you to be happy, because you deserve it. I ask you to always hold the best memory of me, because I mom carry you with me wherever I go, in my heart, veins and flesh. I assure you that there will be no grief, because the essence of you inside of me, and vice versa, is stronger than any sorrow a man might ever go through. There is no separation between us my love, because separation is always in the heart, and ours are meant to collide forever.”

Motherly Fashion: The Before & After BY: NOHA KANDIL

Mothers’ priorities shift after giving birth, and they find themselves adopting a whole new lifestyle. Practical and comfort are two words that they should live by and try to apply on everything, even to their style of clothing. In addition to the pregnancy weight gain, women’s body-shape may alter. For instance, an hourglass woman can have more of a pear shaped body after giving birth. Some of the physical changes go back to normal after awhile, others may need more effort like exercising; however, unfortunately there are some physical alterations that women reportedly get stuck with forever. Bottom line, it’s about embracing the transformation you go through, whatever it is, and finding balance between highlighting your beauty, and dressing conveniently for your new tasks as a mum. In order to achieve that, first you have to understand what exactly your body is going through and act accordingly. SO HERE ARE THE TOP FOUR TRANSFORMATIONS THAT NEW MOMS GO THROUGH, WITH SOME TIPS THAT WOULD HELP YOU ADAPT TO THESE CHANGES:

BUST SIZE IS BIGGER It’s no surprise that during pregnancy, and after giving birth, women’s breasts get larger, especially if they are breastfeeding; however, this is temporary. According to Doctor Gerald F., a medical director for women’s services, after moms stop supplying milk, their breasts will shrink back.

Kenzo Tips: Wearing a button up shirt is not the smartest choice here. When your Alexander baby is screaming and crying out for food, you won’t have time to unbutton. Mcqueen Wide necklines/ V-necks, or crossover tops can be really convenient at this DKNY stage; and make sure you choose a stretchy material. To add a little edge to your look, you can wear prints. And if you’re not into patterned clothes, you can always add a scarf to your plain wardrobe, which could also serve as a cover for you and your baby while breastfeeding. And generally try to wear darker colors, in case any leakage or splashes occur while feeding your baby.

BELLY GETS FLAPPY You basically carry a little human being in your belly for nine months; so having a bigger belly is perfectly normal, and it won’t magically go away after popping your little creature out. Fortunately, after some time, and with the right exercise programs, you can get your flat tummy back (fingers crossed!).

Tips: Wearing tight jeans will be really uncomfortable right after giving birth. I know you’re dying to go back to your regular pants, but you’ll have to hold on to those maternity pants with elastic waist for a little bit longer; just make sure you choose the correct size, because last thing you want is to wear a fattening pants. If you really want to wear tights, then put on stretchy comfy leggings with an oversized trendy top/ tunic that would go smoothly down your belly. Also, some draping won’t hurt.

BROADER HIPS Dr. Daniel H. Chappell, a specialist in family medicine, states that due to hormonal changes, it’s quite common for some women to end up with wider hips. Hormones fluctuations during pregnancy make the joints more flexible, and can widen out to make room for the baby to pass, which is irreversible of course. However, the most common reason for having bigger hips is simply weight gain, which you can get rid off with a healthy diet shortly after giving birth. Tips: Okay, you’re more of a pear shape now, which means that your lower half of the body (hips) is wider than the upper part (shoulders), so the key here is in finding the balance, and dragging the attention away from your lower half. It’s generally preferable to go for darker shades of pants, and brighter tops. Bell-bottom/ flare jeans can be really flattering for your new shape, and you can try harem pants as well. For evening, you can go for an A-line empire cut or overlapped dress.

Les Éclaires

FEET SWOLLEN Research shows that due to excess weight exerted on the foot during pregnancy, it kind of expands; yes, it’s a shame I know, but don’t get too shocked just yet, because it’s possible you end up with a permanent bigger size (okay now you can get it out of your system). According to an article posted on Dailymail, UK, Actress Denise Van Outen stated that her feet size went from five to six permanently after giving birth. Tips: Simply wear flats … I mean your feet is swollen, and you’re most probably still feeling sore after a whole nine months of pregnancy, is there a better excuse to wear flats? Also, it’s more practical and safe, since you’ll be walking around carrying your baby; at least till you get the hang of it. Flats come in all patterns and colors these days, and it can give you that edgy look you want. You can add some sophistication through those leopard print slipper loafers, or a may be a pair of sequined ones to add some sparkle.

10 YEARS YOUNGER HAIRSTYLES

Y

BY: ALAA EL GARHY our hair is one of the most things that are remarkable about you as a woman; it definitely says a lot about a woman’s age, and luckily you can always make over your hairstyle. Before going to your hairstylist you must read this to know exactly what you should be looking for. Here are some hairstyles that will make you look 10 years younger:

Loose Wavy Curls: Whether you divide your hair at the middle, or you have a side swept bang, long or short hair, go for the natural looking wavy curl. Not only does it make you look younger, but attractive too. Men LOVE loose wavy curls! Keep your hair textured and loose; it’s flattering and makes your hair look thicker. TIP: Never go for long straight hair, it won’t flatter your age.

Loose Braids: Whether you style it to the back or side, a loose braid always makes you look younger yet stylish and chic.

Side Swept Bang: They are definitely better than the blunt bang. Moreover, bangs draw more attention to your eyes, distracting people from your forehead the area which tips off your age. 40 | march 2014

The Ponytail: It always looks girlish and playful, plus it’s mini facelift when tied right. Style your bangs to look natural and you’ll be good to go. TIP: You can always wrap a piece of your hair around the tie to get that extra natural and polished look.

Few Highlights: It frames your face and gives you a YOUTHFUL GLOW; however, the trick here is FEW highlights. Going with more highlights will give you a fake look, and might draw the attention to those few white hairs you’re trying to hide.

The BOB: One word “HOT”! Many women think that it may worsen their bone structure look, well actually it flatters it. You can always style it with different lengths; the best one would be the angled A-line style, and it gives you an instant diva look. Adding a fringe to that would add an edgy adventurous appeal.

Chignon Hairstyle: Many updos have the disadvantage of giving a botox impression, however if you go with a looser and more natural look, it would flip it all around making you look more youthful. TIP: let some strands hang playfully loose around your face. march 2014 | 41

Beauty on Budget! BY: MAHA ABDEL-LATIF

E

ver wanted to create Kim Kardashian’s flawless look without overspending or maxing out your credit card? Well, guess what? With this guide, you can do just that!

Today I’m sharing my secrets with you – a compilation that is the result of many (and I mean many) trials and errors that have been spent trying to achieve a lasting, flawless look without spending heaps of money on the highend products used by celebrity makeup artists. Having also tried my fair share of higher-end products, I can tell you first-hand that many of the products included in this list are the perfect dupes for those higher-end products. What’s even better is the fact that everything included in this list can be found at many of your local pharmacies or beauty shops! Ready? Here we go! We'll start with creating a flawless complexion. Here, we'll need a good concealer and foundation. For under the eyes, Bourjois' new Healthy Mix Concealer will do you wonders! This product is a fruit-based formula that blends seamlessly into the skin and smoothes away dark circles, all for only EGP 82! As for the rest of the face, try Catrice's Infinite Matt Foundation. This oil-free product delivers that flawless complexion that we all desire to achieve. Applying a thin layer with a stippling brush in circular motions will give you medium coverage and will leave your skin looking absolutely stunning! Catrice foundations can be found at several pharmacies for EGP 60-85. Next, we move onto the eyes. I think we can all agree how important it is to get the eyes just right when applying makeup. To get lasting sultry eyes, apply Catrice's Gel Liner to your top lash line (EGP 40), Maybelline's Kohl Liner to your waterline (EGP 30), and L'Oreal's Extra Volume Collagen Mascara (EGP 120). For an extra touch that will take your look to the next level, apply Ardell's False Lashes (EGP 30).

Catrice Infinite Matt Foundation

Bourjois Healthy Mix Concealer

Last, but not least, let's add a little color, shall we? For the perfect rosy cheeks that will last all day, give Catrice's Defining Blush a try (EGP40 – 50). To finish off with a gorgeous look, I usually opt for the shade Intense Pink from Maybelline's ColorSensational Lipstick line (EGP 65). There you have it – a red-carpet-worthy face for a fraction of the price! Apply these products with the right brushes and watch as Maybelline Color your beauty is accentuated right before your very eyes. For in-depth Sensational Lipstick explanation of which brushes are used for each part of the face, visit TheCairoCloset.com/blogs.

Get the secrets of Correctors & Concealers BY: EMAN ARAFA

M

ost women have under eye dark circles, and we all want them to go away. Truth is that they are usually genetic, but there are ways to diminish them or cover them up with makeup. But what’s the difference between correctors and concealers? Correctors are mainly used to cancel out the discolorations, so in this regard we use the color theory to camouflage darkness around eyes, redness caused by blemishes, acne or any other pigmentation. So in this sense a good corrector should be light in texture and easy to blend as they are not meant to provide coverage like concealers do. For blemishes that are usually red, you need a green corrector to neutralize it. As for under eye circles, it’s best to use a peach or orange corrector to neutralize the blue or purplish areas around the eyes before you use concealers to cover them well. But beware as correctors should not be used alone. If you do, then you will have a green or orange spot on your face, and it will stand out as you will be drawing more attention to the area you were supposed to camouflage. For some people a good covering concealer would be enough especially if they just need to cover minor imperfections, so in such cases it might not be necessary to use a corrector.

Application tips: • Start by moisturizing your skin and don’t forget

• •

to use a good eye cream to avoid the signs of dehydration around the eye area. After picking the right corrector, make sure to blend it really well before you apply your concealer on top of it. Use a very small amount to begin with, and then add more if you feel the need to. That way you avoid adding too much and making it more challenging to blend. Now use a concealer that’s a little lighter than your foundation, but not much lighter as you want it to blend in and look natural. You can use either a flat concealer brush or your ring finger to apply your under eye concealer. Spread the product in a little half circle from the inner corner of your eye to the outer corner; another way is to do the same but in a V or inverted triangular shape to give your eyes a bit of a lift. Don’t forget the inner corner of your eyes as well, but avoid wearing the concealer all over the lid. Finish your concealer with a dash of translucent powder using a clean fluffy blending brush to make it stay longer and to avoid the appearance of cracks and lines.

Tip: Ladies with oily lids should use a longwear matte base for their eyeshadow on their upper lid all the way up to the crease and a little adjacent to the lower lash line too. Using mattifying eye primers helps as well. You can try MAC paint pot that comes in different colors as a base for your eyeshadow or on its own. It will stop your eye makeup from running or creasing.

Dalia Amer

Radisson Blu Hotel, Alexandria’s First Woman as General Manager BY: YOSRA SHOHAYEB Most working women, especially young ones, fear that once they become a mother their dreams and aspirations will come to an end, afraid that they won’t be able to create the proper balance between their career and family. However, inspiring women such as Mrs. Dalia Amer prove to us everyday that it is possible to become a successful woman, a great mother and a beautiful lady. From about 20 years ago, Amer started as a sales executive, and worked all the way towards becoming director sales and marketing, and eventually general manager. It was a challenge, but for Amer it was a goal to be achieved. Did it ever occur to you that you would reach such a position? It was always my dream to become a general manager. I started my career in hospitality when I was 19 years old as a trainee. I always questioned myself if I’ll ever be a general manager; however, it 44 | march 2014

How did you feel when you were chosen for the position, given that there were male candidates against you? It is very flattering and makes me very proud, because it is a challenging position for a woman. You work 24/7, and you don’t take many days off to be with your family. It is challenging; however, it is very entertaining, but you need to love the job to be able to do it, because otherwise you will see it as very tiring and time consuming. I feel that we should have much more females, because females have their extra touch with guests, people and the layout. What has been the greatest challenge in your career thus far, and how did you overcome it? The greatest challenge was the transformation in people’s attitudes after 2011, where I was a beginner general manager. Employees in our society feel that they shouldn’t work because there is a revolution, so it is hard if there is such an attitude when you are heading over more than 300 employees. The challenge is to not give orders, but to create environments and involve employees in decision making. I overcame it by trust and credibility. When you genuinely care for people, they’ll trust you. This was actually my greatest challenge, to build this trust and get close to them. How do you balance between being a successful woman and a mother? It is a very hard balance. I think for me it was always very important to be both, a mother and a general manager in a hotel. With the evolving social life nowadays, you don’t have much to do with your kids. You just have to put the fundamentals such as attitude, religion, respect, ethics and behavior, and

these things take a lot of time in the beginning. However, I gave it my full potential. I dedicate 80% of my time with my daughter to build fundamentals, because this is what will matter and shape her personality in the end. I can say that being both a successful woman and a mother is doable. You just have to manage your time, learn to trust your people and delegate some work to them. I believe also that work gives a certain experience in how to deal with people involving children, and preparing them to deal with life and situations. How does your gender experience and motherhood influence other Egyptian women out there? For the past 10 years, Egyptian women have already been influenced by a lot of good examples and challenges they faced. I can certainly say that early 20’s are the ones influenced by me, because they feel they have a chance and that they can achieve something. It gives them hope and a real example. They feel that they can be a mother, a lady and a professional. In our society, many underestimate women to hold powerful positions, how do you fight that? We do underestimate women in leading positions. I actually found that women’s attitude is active whenever they hold a leading position. They try to

do it with over excellence more than men to prove people who think otherwise wrong. Now when you deal with a woman you find it more difficult to deal with a man. You find women getting into more details than men. We in a Middle Eastern society think that women cannot do or comprehend the same jobs as men or handle the same situations; however, this is proved to be wrong. In a lot of corporate companies, there are leading professional women who are very successful, and deal with challenging situations better than men. You do not prove you deserve the position by attaining it, but by keeping up the momentum, and keeping up the involvement of the people and the challenge. You feel you really achieved something when people start to change their way of thinking. They stop regarding you as a female, and start perceiving you as a respected professional who knows what she is doing. Given your position, where do you see the future of Egypt’s tourism in 2014? The tourism sector in Egypt will be booming if we all understand that any person working in tourism should change their attitude from taking advantage of the tourist to actually helping him/her, starting from the taxi driver to the hotel. We could be the best country in the world with our combinations of products and landscapes, along with a little change in attitude. march 2014 | 45

Faces of Egypt I wanted to start Educate-Me, even if I wasn’t getting paid. The more I exert effort in it, the more output I receive, and at the end of the day I would rather spend my time with these kids. Was Educate-me a risk worth leaving everything behind? Yes, definitely. In my job, I can easily be replaced, but what I do with these kids cannot be replaced. It wasn’t just about that I was working in a firm; it was about feeling that I was in the wrong place. Even though I always wanted my former job, but over time I discovered that I’m passionate about kids, people, education, etc. I discovered that what I am good at is something entirely different.

Yasmin Helal

Founder of Educate-Me BY: Yosra shohayeb In a world full of destruction, we try our best to grasp on any breeze of goodness that might pass our path. In a world of madness, we wish those superheroes we always read about in comics would burst out their super powers on us, and maybe save us from the chaos we’re drowning in, only to find that superheroes are not only in marvels and movies, but just around the corner, waiting for each and every world changer out there to join them in making this planet a better one to live on. And for that, we salute you Educate-Me. Join us here and find out how to become a superhero yourself. I know that you left your job for Educate-Me; tell us more about that? I started Educate-Me, while I was still working. It all started in June 2010, when a beggar crossed my way asking me for money to enroll his girls in school; he needed a small amount of money, and so I decided to meet him the week after to ensure that he is sincere, in order to sponsor his family. I thought that there must be many others suffering from the same problem, so why not start a fund raising initiative to reenroll school dropouts back. After a few months, I started visiting rural areas, in order to acquire information about different cases. I began fund raising through people I know. Moreover, at that point, I started comparing how I feel about work and how I feel towards Educate-Me; 46 | march 2014

Why did you choose to tackle the problem of education in particular? In my opinion, everything starts from education. You can only be free, if your mind is free. The root of any problem falls back to education. Nevertheless, if you are able to liberate their mind, then any change can happen. Tell us about the different teams readers can volunteer in through your organization? Research and design team, learning delivery, and human resources. You have really interesting programs that you offer to Educate-Me kids. Please, share them with us. Early childhood education program; it serves children age 4-7 years, where it encourages learning through play. Our program focuses on developing the children’s cognitive, language and social skills. Non-formal after-school program; it serves children age 7-14 years, where children choose what to learn on a monthly basis, and are also encouraged to come up with their own projects. Among the different learning options are academic subjects (Arabic, English, Math, digital literacy) as well as non-academics (judo, handicrafts, programming, robotics). Adult education program; it aims at serving youth and parents. It includes literacy sessions that are delivered using CLE (concentrated language

encounter) method and is implemented through certified community members that are trained through our center. The program also entails counseling sessions and awareness campaigns around hygiene, nutrition and parenting which are delivered through our expert partners.

external customers. We want Educate-Me’s graduate to have the freedom and opportunity to aspire to his/ her dream. Our purpose is not literacy or graduating college. Our purpose is to develop self-actualized people, because we believe this will create a happy human being.

Non-formal school program, which is currently underdevelopment, aims at providing the children age 10-15 years with the knowledge, skills and attitudes that allows them to achieve self actualization. This is implemented through an alternative approach that incorporates project-based learning with the Egyptian national curriculum at the elementary level.

in your opinion, What is the core behind any NGO’s success? In my opinion, it’s knowing what matters, and knowing the purpose of the organization. A lot of NGOs are always thinking about donors and how to get the money; however, we don’t do that. We all believe in this together, the kids, parents, and volunteers. For us, the kids always come first; we don’t allow ourselves to get distracted by other factors.

Formal education scholarship program aims at supporting the children’s public education through financing their school year. What do you focus on to always develop your organization? We focus on relationship building between the team; between the kids and one another; and between facilitators and kids. There are always team bonding outings, field trips, and formal and informal training, whether through partnerships with other organizations, or through classrooms that aim to answer different questions and challenges. We are always monitoring the kids in order to see the impact. We always speak with them and their parents, in order to deliver an experience relevant to their needs. Some people misunderstand the goal behind your organization. Can you tell us about its mission? We believe that education is not there to satisfy to

There are pessimists who fight against any entrepreneur. How did you deal with that? I gathered around me like-minded people, which is where I got my energy from. I spent time with people who share the same vision. I found the right people along the way; they were enough at every point of the time. Their support and vision were much bigger than pessimists. Where do you see educate-me in the future? Educate me is an ideal. I hope that this ideal in the future becomes the point that changes the national education in Egypt, becoming the core of different national curriculums, and opening community schools in different areas. Also, working with the government, so they can adopt Educate-Me’s philosophy, and so nations can benefit from it as well.

Middle Eastern Nostalgic Ambiance at Fairmont Nile City

T

BY: YOSRA SHOHAYEB

he moment we were invited to dine at Bab El Nil restaurant, we knew that we were about to live an extravagant experience as Fairmont Nile City never fails. However, what we discovered at our arrival was most certainly beyond expectations. Besides the luxurious and chic atmosphere at Bab El Nil, what makes it standout is the positive energy the place sends the minute you walk in and through your whole sitting. After all, we are all really searching for experiences to make us happy, and Bab El Nil proved to be one of happiness’s destinations. Nevertheless, the ambiance is a break-free from the entire crowd around and within you. The restaurant has an outdoor sitting area for Cairo’s ace weather days, where you can enjoy the relaxing Nile scenery. It also has an indoor sitting space, where you can enjoy oriental music in a cozy, yet elegant mood on chilly nights. The whole restaurant is decorated with a Middle Eastern theme; old movie stars with their biography and pictures flooding the menu giving it a nostalgic essence, as well as the walls around the place covered with posters of old movies. The arabesque interior design around the place with the Arabian chandeliers gives the restaurant the perfect cultural twist. The long menu offers many vegetarian as well as meat selections with standouts of moutabel (smoked eggplant, lemon juice, tahina, and olive oil), lebneh with mint, garlic and olive oil, warak enab (olive oil braised vine leaves stuffed with rice and vegetables), chicken liver with pomegranate paste, lamb kebbeh, and the famous Lebanese fattouche salad that will fulfill your taste buds. With all these appetizers served, your stomach will beg you to stop; however, you cannot before you taste their molokhia with rabbit or chicken, their lamb shank with baby onions, carrots, caraway, and mastic, or their mouth-watering meskaa tajine with minced meat. End your dining experience with their Middle Eastern flavorsome desert om ali, an oriental bread pudding with nuts and raisins. With all this said, at Bab El Nil restaurant enjoy a cultural immersion beyond dining with a traditional belly dancer every Tuesday and Thursday at 8: 30 pm. Moreover, if something as simple as food and an ambiance can leave you walking out with happiness and joy, then you never should let go of it.

when modern meets traditional BY: Sally El Bardesy

I

n the last period, art, fashion and dĂŠcor are getting more and more daring and bold. Maybe the more you go bold the more you mix opposites, right? Magazines, TV, designers and books always talk about the how to match, with unity/harmony among the elements of art and design. Now speaking of being bold and taking taste to a whole new level, we have a lot to dig in. Also, if you are one of those who is an art collector, this is going to be your address.

New meets old Talking about time; old and new are only subjective to time. Past and present are only different because of time. The old holds that nostalgia and mystery of not being there anymore. The present is all about the energy that we continuously emit in our life.

Now combining both together; can you feel the magic? It was not known before that this equation could be legal by any means. Rules made it clear that art 50 | march 2014

is harmony, unity and a visual proof of the design flow altogether. Not anymore, rules are changing and upgrading to the extent that rules are vanishing nowadays. Also thanks to the modern life that kept everything simple yet sophisticated with glamour. So not mixing both I believe is considered a sin.

Making a statement By now most of us are experts in this. To statement is to break the flow, or maybe even stop it. This sudden surprise has a superior effect of pausing or most likely thinking. The most interesting part is when creating a unique pattern and then adding a new direction. This is how it gives interest and keeps the design always dynamic with a twist. In modern interior design nowadays, making a statement when using classic elements is just like wearing that red lipstick. Or, maybe the ‘It’ bag and sometimes the heels. Statements are easy to establish and show. It could be a piece of furniture, a curtain, accessories, fabrics or even the architecture itself.>>

Mixing classic and modern Now as a start it’s important to know that modern style has a specific design, shape and concept. However the word classic or traditional is vast. It varies from French, English, roman and also oriental. Usually it’s easier to build a modern design and soften the mood with traditional touches or to add certain flair. However, the opposite is not any wrong. It’s better known that when it comes to the other way round, it always applies in either the interior or furniture.

Aspects of the style When you consider enhancing your place with this unique blend, many options apply. Nevertheless, the more you go unique the more it’s meaningful and noticeable. Below are some to show:

Furniture: Add that antique piece of mirror, sofa, frames or table into the middle or one corner of your modern house. Pattern and wallpaper: The very popular and bestselling baroque wall paper will be a stand out old print if it’s applied on the back of a modern set of furniture than blend. Colors: Using traditional designs for the interior or furniture and going trendy with colors is so cool.Imagine a Marie Antoinette painting with a neon frame!

Lightings: You have sure seen this before; the very elegant chandelier installed inside lamp shades. Also applying colorful light bulbs to an antique has a different message to deliver. Many others to count, but I’ll leave some space for your creativity and imagination. Just one important rule to state, don’t go 50 – 50. If so, the surprise and glamour behind the concept either fades or gets cluttered with. It’s always better to break the sequence and not go symmetrical with mixing.

Superb Family Activities around the World Get that Bond Back to Life!

Cape Town; better than school The trick in Cape Town is that you can’t really have a ten minute come-and-go kind of sightseeing or activity, because of its absolutely enchanting geography, history and biology, which is the reason it’s a better learning environment than school. For the best family beaches over there, go to Boulders for its smaller and protected area, where you can have a picnic lunch over there. After the beach, visit the penguin breeding area. Then in the afternoon, take the family to Two Oceans Aquarium at the V&A Waterfront, where shark feeds takes place, and it’s interesting to watch African and rockhopper penguins during feeding time. On hot days, head for Newlands and explore Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, where parents can relax while the kids climb trees, spot guinea fowl and splash away in the streams. Believe it or not, you can enjoy a day of wine tasting and cellar tours with your kids in town. Blaauwklippen in Cape Winelands has an antique carriage museum and does carriage rides and picnics alongside the EersteRivier, as well as an opportunity to see cheetahs, raptors and even spot its 21 historic gables. Can you ask for a more nourishing, simultaneously fun experience? 54 | march 2014

Bali; not only for honeymooners Even though Bali, Indonesia is the “ultimate honeymoon destination, it is not just for the lovey-dovies, but for families too. One of the spots your kids will worship you for taking them to is Waterbom Park. It is great fun, exhilarating and well managed with surprisingly good food. Let your children have their own natural discovery of the wonders of Balinese culture in Green Camp and enjoy the great outdoors from planting rice, picking cocoa, and making chocolate, or just climbing one of the hundreds of coconut trees that dot the landscape of this cool camp. Moreover, Bali Bird Park is an experience that all ages will relish, as it is one of the best managed bird parks and rehabilitation centers in the world. The Bali starlings, birds of paradise, and Komodo dragons are each worth the trip in their own right. Do not under any circumstances forget to head to Bali Treetop Adventure Park; this park will test the bravery and agility of all from 6 to 60 giving everyone the freedom to act as Tarzan in the jungle. >>

Kyoto; walk in history’s shoes Kyoto is a city full of ancient history and rich culture, and the city has gone to great lengths to keep it that way. Start your tour with Kyoto Tower, the one building in the city that stands out more than any other. A modern structure that rises high in the sky, the family can get a great view of the entire area, as well as neighboring cities. You are then off to the Kyoto International Manga Museum. Manga are Japanese comic books and graphic novels. They have been an important part of Japanese pop culture and society for over a century. Mixing historical and modern works, it is a fun and interactive place to learn about and experience Japan’s most popular art form. Heading to the Umekoji area is a must, as it includes a visit to the Umekoji Steam Locomotive Museum, the brand new Kyoto Aquarium, and the multifaceted Umekoji Park. It seems like history never sleeps there. 56 | march 2014

Vienna; music and ratatouille It is true that people who live in Vienna are in love with it, and people who visit Vienna fall head over heels for it. Why wouldn’t they? Food and music are always at ease, and you can enjoy it miraculously over there as the Viennese start their gourmet training young. At the Hilton Vienna’s children’s cooking classes, kids learn to prepare dishes such as schnitzel and ratatouille; the feast is then enjoyed by the entire family. Make sure to visit the Vienna Prater, where it will show parents and kids the fun part of being a family in Vienna, from enjoying cycling tours together and playing ball to having a family walk in the park.

Buenos Aires; a footballing-mad nation: Even if your kids are not fans of football, they won’t get bored in Buenos Aires. In Argentina you’re never too far from a game in a park or a crowded café showing the latest matches from South America and Europe. Take the kids to a match at the famous Boca Juniors stadium, the pitch where Diego Maradona cut his teeth. There’s also a museum at the stadium tracing the history of the team with video footage of the best goals. Over there are always the city’s many parks, where you and your youngsters will be able to join in on a local kick around. Now that’s quality time!

Dr. Nanette S. Nuessle

Pediatrics

2

Dr. Ruben J. Nazario Pediatrics

How much protein should I eat while breast-feeding?

What does it mean if my newborn keeps throwing up green stuff?

Doctor’s Answer:

Doctor’s Answer:

During pregnancy and breastfeeding, we need 60 grams of protein a day. This is 15-20 grams more than usual. This “extra” is the equivalent of one egg, 1/4 cup of cheese, or one glass of milk. It is also important to maintain a well balanced diet and to stay on your prenatal vitamins.

3

Dr. Craig A. Brown Pulmonology

I never suffered from shortness of breath while smoking, but I quit three days ago, and I’m really short on breath now. What’s going on? Doctor’s Answer: It is fairly common to experience shortness of breath and cough after you quit smoking. Sometimes, this can last 4-6 weeks. If it lasts longer than that, then consult your physician.

60 | march 2014

If your baby is throwing up green stuff, it could be a sign of intestinal obstruction. Some babies have a condition called volvulus, in which the intestines twist around themselves, blocking the flow of food and bile through the gut. This is a very serious condition that needs prompt attention, because it can cut off the blood supply to the intestines. Call your doctor right away.

4

Dr. Andrew Turrisi

Medical and Radiation Oncology

Can really high doses of Vitamin C cure cancer? Doctor’s Answer: what turns out to be quite excessive doses of Vitamin C might prevent cancer, but it would not abolish, diminish or cure an established cancer.

5

Dr. Peter M. Ihle

Orthopedic Surgery

Could you tell me what are some benefits of walking on a treadmill at a high incline? Doctor’s Answer:

You are doing more work. Not only propelling yourself forward, but also lifting your body; therefore, using more energy and burning more calories. Just be careful as it also puts more stress across your knees and especially patella-femoral joint. 5-7 is a good safe elevation, but if your body tells you no, listen to it and lower the incline.

7

Dr. Peter Rybak Endodontics

I have tooth pain and sensitivity to cold after having a filling a month ago. X-rays looked fine today. Cold air hurt on tooth too. What else could be causing this pain? Doctor’s Answer:

Whenever you drill a tooth, it causes trauma to the nerve, which causes inflammation (pulpitis). It can take between 6-8 weeks for the inflammation to subside. When you have a filling placed on a tooth, the pain/cold sensitivity should decrease over the weeks, which is called reversible pulpitis. If the pain stays the same or increases, you have irreversible pulpitis and may need a root canal.

6

Dr. Robert T. Chang Ophthalmology

Can you explain why Lasik can only work on the eyes up to a certain percentage of vision loss with astigmatism? Doctor’s Answer:

It depends on the cornea shape, thickness, and how much and where tissue can be removed in order to counterbalance astigmatism. If too much tissue is removed it can cause problems like ectasia, and if the wrong tissue is removed, it can create more refractive error.

8

Mark Heyes Fashion Presenter and Celebrity Stylist

What are the top tips to avoid denim disasters? Expert’s Answer:

• Darker denims will give a slimmer silhouette. • Pockets on derriere make the bottom seem smaller. • Avoid overhang, and choose a higher waistband to smooth your lumps and bumps. • For curvy girls: Try boot-cut for balance, but don’t get stuck in a noughties style rut, and do try skinnies too, they can often be more flattering. • Buy jeans in proportion to waist and hips to prevent gaping at the waistband.

I

Wake Me Up from SLEEP PARALYSIS! t’s bed time; you head to bed normally like any person, tired and can’t wait to hug it, just to find when you wake up that you cannot move a muscle in your body. You can hardly breath, as if something is sitting on your chest, you can hear people around you and maybe even see them too, but you cannot seem to shout their names. you look peacefully asleep, and above all you are pretty sure you’re alive. This weird phenomenon is called sleep paralysis. If you are a victim of it, before going bonkers or getting frightened, get familiar with what happens to your body, its causes, symptoms and treatment. Stephanie Pappas in his article What Makes Sleep Paralysis Scary, said that understanding why sleep paralysis happens helps people feel less distressed after an episode. However, if you are not a victim of this phenomenon, it is highly common that you will be subjected to it. In Kevin Morton’s article, Paralyzed at Night: Is Sleep Paralysis Normal?, it is said that over 50% of people will experience at least one episode of SP during their lifetime.

What is sleep paralysis? Pappas says that becoming mentally aware before the body wakes up from its paralyzed state can be a terrifying experience, as people realize they can’t move or speak. They become even more terrified, when these episodes are accompanied by hallucinations and the sensations of breathlessness. While these episodes take place, a momentary inability to move one’s limbs, trunk and head despite being fully conscious, may occur when someone is either drifting of or, more rarely, waking up, Psychologist Christopher French of Goldsmiths College in London says. He argues that during rapideye-movement (REM) sleep, the muscles of the body are paralyzed, presumably to prevent the dreamer from physically acting out the dream. Nevertheless, these episodes last from a few seconds to several minutes, where sleep paralysis happens to some people once or twice in their life, while others experience it a few times a month or more regularly. It is more likely to occur to teenagers and young adults; however, it can affect people of all ages, where men and women are equally affected.

Researchers are not sure why this normal paralysis happens during consciousness for victims of sleep paralysis, but psychophysiological studies have confirmed that attacks are particularly likely to occur if the person enters REM sleep quickly after hitting the pillow, by passing the stages of non-REM sleep that usually happen first. French says that there are other factors that make sleep paralysis more likely to occur including drifting off while lying on the back, feeling stressed or experiencing a disruption in normal sleep patterns, such as from shift work, jet lag, caffeine or alcohol. Moreover, sleep paralysis occurs when the brain and body aren’t quite on the same page when it comes to sleep. During rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, dreaming is frequent, but the body’s muscles are relaxed to the point of paralysis, perhaps to keep people from acting out their dreams, according to Pappas. Researchers have found that two brain chemicals, glycine and Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid (GABA), are responsible for this muscle paralysis. National Health Service (NHS) has also concluded that some people with narcolepsy (a sleep disorder where you suddenly fall asleep at inappropriate times) also experience sleep paralysis, as well as people who do not get enough sleep. Sleep paralysis victims report unusual kinesthetic sensations, such as feelings of being dragged out of bed, vibrating, flying or falling. These episodes can sometimes lead to full-blown out-of-body experiences. Nevertheless, the strong sense of a presence in the room drives people to think it might be a ghost or an alien; however, the scientific reasons stated above prove the complete opposite. Thus, sleep paralysis is completely harmless, and thankfully, episodes usually last only a few seconds, but being unable to move can be very frightening.

So, what are the symptoms of sleep paralysis? Although sleep paralysis is a symptom of narcolepsy, it is also common in healthy people. In French’s article, he has showed surveys from different countries displaying a wide range of estimates, where 20 to 60% of the normal adult population has experienced sleep paralysis at least once. Around 5% of the population

has experienced one or more of other disturbing symptoms associated with the disorder. The most common effects include visual hallucinations, such as shadows and light or a human or animal figure in the room, and auditory hallucinations, such as hearing voices or footsteps. A person often also feels pressure on his or her chest and has difficulty breathing. According to a study by Stanford, victims of sleep paralysis will suffer from an inability to move the trunk or limbs at sleep onset or upon awakening, and presence of brief episodes of partial or complete skeletal muscle paralysis. Also, episodes can be associated with hypnagogic hallucinations or dream-like mentation (act or use of the brain). Immediately after an episode of sleep paralysis you may feel unsettled and anxious. However, the condition does not pose a risk to your overall health. Moreover, NHS says that if it happens several times a month or more regularly, it is known as isolated sleep paralysis.

Can it ever end or be treated? The fear that accompanies the episodes of sleep paralysis makes one think that it can never be treated; however, Stanford’s study on sleep paralysis shows that not only can it be treated, but there are ways as well to minimize these episodes, such as getting enough sleep, reducing stress, exercising regularly (but not close to bed time), and keeping a regular sleep schedule. Nevertheless, in severe cases, where episodes take place at least once a week for 6 months, medication may be used. The medication is thought to work by altering the amount and depth of REM sleep. This should prevent the temporary paralysis when you wake up or fall asleep, and it should also help reduce any hallucinations you may have. You may be advised to take the medication for a month or two to see whether it improves your symptoms.

Man should forget his anger before he lies down to sleep.

What causes it, and is it harmful?

Ditch those Weights and Pick Up your BABY! BY: SAMIRA KHALIL

B

eing a mother is one of the most rewarding yet challenging experiences you will ever have. If you are a recent mother, I know it is very hard to squeeze in exercise between your continuous work, changing diapers and cooking meals. Not to mention that you are worn out already. But the benefits of postpartum fitness are significant and surprisingly will result in increased energy levels, weight loss, improved mood, increased cardiovascular fitness, and most importantly will prevent postpartum depression! Some of the main issues we are all much guaranteed to face are how to bounce back and lose the baby weight in a safely way, also how to find time between your baby and your lifestyle. “I want to lose those extra 10 kilos, but I really don’t have time and money to do so.” Let’s think outside of the box: How can you lose weight, enjoy it and also spend amazing time with your angel? The answer is very simple! Incorporate your baby into your home workouts. Spending more interactive fun time with your baby and also having the chance to look like a hot mommy and achieve your fitness goals. You don’t have to arrange for childcare or even go to the gym.

DITCH THE WEIGHT DOWN AND PICK UP YOUR B-A-B-Y! Start with simple and easy movements and gradually increase your time and speed. Here are some ideas:

Kiss your baby push up: 1. Lie face down with your palms on the floor and your knees either on the floor (Beginner push up) or knees off with straight back. 2. Lower your elbows and your entire body at once until you reach and kiss your baby, exhaling push back and repeat. **Keep your back straight & your eyes focused on your baby.

64 | march 2014

Tummy Time: 1. Lie flat on your back with your knees bent and put your baby on your belly while holding him/her. 2. Exhale while curling up and forward until your shoulder blades are lifted off the floor or simply until you get close to your baby forehead. Why not another kiss on the forehead?

Pelvic Thrust: 1. Lie on your back with your heels on the floor and your baby on your pelvis. 2. Exhale and lift your hips off the floor as high as you can go (holding your little one hands and giving him some nice swings up and down). Squeeze your hips as tight as your can and hold for a bit, lower back down and repeat. **Your shoulders and neck should always remain on the floor.

After pregnancy, You should focus on the core abdominal (abs), pelvic and lower back muscles which were weakened and stretched during pregnancy and delivery. If you can go outdoors once a week, Go for walking and swimming that will increase blood circulation and speed up your heeling process. Also, walking is the safest for nearly everyone according to the American Council on Exercise. **For safety concerns, always consult your doctor before beginning any postnatal exercise. march 2014 | 65

Never too Early to Set the Right Example BY: NATASCIA PAOLUCCI

It is well known that children learn from observing their parents. This is the reason why parents should show the right example. This is true form the beginning … like the very beginning. Indeed, it all starts with pregnancy. Exercising during this very special time of you and your baby’s life can have many advantages. Indeed, maintaining a regular exercise routine can help you stay healthy and feel your best, which is important. It can also improve your posture and decrease some common discomforts like backaches and fatigue. In addition, there is evidence that it may prevent gestational diabetes (diabetes that develops during pregnancy), relieve stress, and build more stamina needed for labor and delivery. So, there are two different cases and you should make sure that you understand where you start with: Either you were physically active before your pregnancy. In this case, you should be able to continue your activity in moderation. Don’t try to exercise at your former level; instead, do what’s most comfortable for you now. Do not let your heart rate exceed 140 beats per minute. Even the pregnant competitive athletes are closely followed by an obstetrical provider.

66 | march 2014

Now, there are women who should not exercise at all, but this decision belongs to the mother to be and her (trusted) physician. Generally, if you have a medical problem, such as asthma, heart disease or diabetes, exercise may not be advisable. Also, exercise may be harmful if you have an obstetric condition such as: • Bleeding or spotting • Low placenta • Threatened or recurrent miscarriage • A history of early labor • Previous premature births • Weak cervix As a general advice, regardless of how you feel or how your previous pregnancy went, always consult your health care provider before beginning an exercise program. Your health care provider can offer personalized exercise guidelines, based on your medical history. And think about it: is the risk worth taking? Now, for those who can exercise, here is how to choose your activity: Really, most exercises are safe to perform during pregnancy, as long as you exercise with caution and do not overdo it. The safest and most productive activities are swimming, brisk walking, indoor stationary bicycling and low-impact aerobics (taught by a certified aerobics instructor). These activities carry little risk of injury, benefit your entire body, and can be continued until birth. Tennis and racquetball are generally safe activities, but your change in balance during pregnancy may affect rapid movements. Other activities such as jogging can be done in moderation. You may want to choose exercises or activities that do not require great balance or coordination, especially later in pregnancy.

This being said, there are certain exercises and activities that can be harmful if performed during pregnancy. So, avoid the following: • Holding your breath during any activity. • Activities where falling is likely (such as skiing and horseback riding). • Contact sports such as softball, football, basketball and volleyball. • Any exercise that may cause even mild abdominal trauma, including activities that include jarring motions or rapid changes in direction. • Activities that require extensive jumping, hopping, skipping, bouncing or running. • Deep knee bends, full sit-ups, double leg raises and straight-leg toe touches. • Bouncing while stretching. • Exercises that require lying on your back or right side for more than three minutes (especially after your third month of pregnancy). • Waist twisting movements while standing. • Heavy exercise spurts followed by long periods of no activity. • Exercise in hot, humid weather. Always note to do the following: • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Check with your healthcare provider first Take in extra calories Steer clear of dangerous sports Wear the right clothes Warm up Drink plenty of water Don’t lie flat on your back Keep moving Don’t overdo it Don’t get overheated Get up from the floor slowly Cool down Make it a habit

Most importantly, enjoy every minute of your pregnancy. This is the first experience you share with your baby and they should remain quality moments.

Or, you have never exercised regularly before. In this case, you should be able to safely begin an exercise program during pregnancy, but only after consulting with your health care provider. Anyway, do not try a new, strenuous activity. Rather, try walking, as it is generally considered safe to initiate. Besides, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology recommends 30 minutes or more of moderate exercise per day on most if not all days of the week, unless you have a medical or obstetric complication.

No body is worth more than your body.

Vitamin C is an essential nutrient that plays an important role in the protection and maintenance of your skin cells. It is also important for helping your body produce new and healthy skin cells. Adding foods rich in vitamin C to your pregnancy diet may help improve the elasticity of your skin, which will reduce your chances of developing stretch marks. Add citrus fruits, such as grapefruits and oranges. Moreover, including vitamin E in your pregnancy diet is a way to improve the health of your skin so you are less likely to develop stretch marks.

Baalbak An Authentic Taste of Lebanon BY: YOSRA SHOHAYEB

T

he name Baalbak is derived from the town Baalbak itself in the Beqqa Valley of Lebanon situated east of the Litani river, and just as its name is full of originality, the cuisine itself is decorated with authenticity. The cuisine’s calm lights, vintage tables, wooden chairs, and a stone wall façade will make you feel as if you’re in the heart of Lebanon. The idea of the restaurant takes a step further from other Lebanese restaurants in Cairo and turns it into an unforgettable dining experience where clients would actually feel the homey atmosphere they created, and reminisce while dining. Distinctive floral notes pervade the menu from appetizers as humus with shawarma (chickpeas, tahina, lemon juice, olive oil and meat shawarma), their special Lebanese babaganouj, their perfectly seasoned tabouleh, and lebneh which is an absolute to die for at Baalbak. Enjoy these appetizers and more with the cuisine’s special crispy flat thin bread. Not only are the restaurant’s appetizers beyond pleasing, but their entrees varied from folklore

dishes to Baalbak’s characoal grilled plates are absolutely delicious and fulfilling. The menu itself will tantalize your taste buds making you confused of what to choose. We suggest that you order mixed grill selection of lamb, kabab, kofta and shish tawook, which goes perfectly with your tabouleh or your tahina. Their roasted chicken with citric garlic, thyme and zaatar, which you’ll find in the Baalbak folklore section on the menu, is completely mouthwatering. The chicken is drenched in soup with perfectly marinated potatoes. All ingredients not only mix nicely together, but really accentuate the different tastes between them. Now if you decided to stay late at Baalbak, then congratulations as you have made the right choice. You will enjoy an oriental live entertainment, and while you do that, delight your stomach with Baalbak’s, or you can say, Lebanon’s best deserts. Order their konafa and fruits pudding, which will do anything but fail you. Also, their cheese cream with honey and nuts will be the absolute happy ending meal to your stomach and night. Bon appétit from Lebanon!

Your Baby’s First Nutrition Steps BY: NOURA HASSABALLA

N

ew moms often worry about their new born babies, especially if they are feeding enough or not. During the first 4-6 months of life, infants only need breast milk or formula to meet all their nutritional needs. A newborn may need to nurse 8-12 times per day (every 2-4 hours), or on demand; if breastfed. By 4 months, the baby feeding decreases to 4-6 times per day; however, the quantity of breast milk consumed at each feeding will increase. Formula-fed babies may need to eat about 6-8 times per day, starting newborns with 2-3 ounces of formula per feeding (for a total of 16-24 ounces per day). As with breastfeeding, the number of feedings will decrease as the baby gets older, but the amount of formula will increase to approximately 6-8 ounces per feeding. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) currently recommends introducing solid foods when a baby is between 4 and 6 months old, depending on your baby’s readiness and nutritional needs.

Is your baby ready to eat solids? • Loss of tongue-thrust reflex. This reflex prevents infants from choking on foreign objects, also causes them to push food out of their mouths. It allows baby to drink or swallow with ease. • Has s/he doubled their birth weight? • The ability to let you know he/she is full. Showing signs such as turning from the bottle or breast. This means that the baby is able to control the amount of food he/she is getting. It also helps them to stop overeating if parents are unaware of baby’s satiety. • Can baby support his/her own head? In other words having the ability to sit up without assistance. • Do they have any interest in food? A 4-6 months old baby will start staring and grabbing food at dinner table. Keep in mind that this is not a very clear sign because babies tend to grab everything just to throw it in their mouth.

Types of food for your baby’s first year: Now that we have identified the signs of readiness, let’s look at the type of foods. The first food that you want to start your baby on is vegetables. It’s better not to start with anything sweet because latter on, they may reject salty, bland, sour, or any other taste. It also must be easy to digest and unlikely to cause any allergic reaction. Stay away from adding any seasonings such as salt, pepper or spices in general; their digestive system is yet very delicate to handle any of that. Baby rice is generally recommended as baby’s first food. It is easy to 70 | march 2014

digest and can be made up with breast milk or formula so they will have a familiar taste. Avoid home-prepared beets, collard greens, spinach, and turnips. They can contain high levels of nitrates, which can cause anemia in infants. Get the jarred varieties of those vegetables. Age 4-6 months • puréed or mashed cooked vegetables, such as green beans, carrots, sweet-potatoes or potatoes. • mashed or puréed fruits, such as banana, cooked apple, pear or avocado. • gluten-free cereal, such as baby rice, sago, maize, cornmeal or millet, mixed with your baby’s milk. Age 6-8 months Along with the foods you are already giving, you can start introducing proteins (pea-sized pieces of cooked poultry, meats, fish, and beans). Age 8-10 months Finger foods such as small O-shaped cereals, teething crackers, or small pieces of cooked pasta. Egg yolk (whole eggs are not recommended by some physicians because of allergies), small amounts of yogurt, cottage cheese, and any pasteurized cheese. Age 10-12 months Baby can start eating most foods we eat, if they are cut up and mashed properly. AAP now says there is no need to avoid peanut products, eggs, wheat, or fish until after one year. Although some pediatricians don’t recommend that. Avoid whole cow’s milk and honey until at least one year of age.

Steaming Up your Sex Life after a Baby: Know- how

74 | march 2014

F

inding time to rekindle with your partner after a baby is tiresome; actually finding time for anything in your life at that moment is impossible, even your simplest rights such as sleeping. Oh, how you miss this feeling of drowning into your bed after a long day with all the reassurance in the world that your bed is your favorite place of all, and even addressing it as a person. Unfortunately, this feeling is gone with the wind. But just because you won’t experience having your eyelids shut for … let’s just leave it open, doesn’t mean you should be deprived of sex as well. And because we know how strenuous it is finding time for making love with a baby around the house, we are offering you with some lovemaking tips that will take you back in time when you were newlyweds who couldn’t take their hands off each other.

You don’t need a bed It is very likely that your first child will be sleeping with you in the same room, and this means that fun times are about to begin. How? Start branching out to the sofa, office and even the shower, because let’s admit it; it’s much more exciting! This will give you the sense of when you first got together, not planned and spontaneous. Plus, chances are when you’re in bed these days you’re asleep (or you want to be).

The new “choreplay” Ian Kerner, a sexuality counselor and New York Times best-selling author, suggests that men should engage in “choreplay,’ which is the new foreplay. If men help in getting things done, this way they will free up some time, which means more of intimate time together. Kerner says that this must happen, because a lot of mothers are taking the lead of the baby and managing all chores and tasks, which results in her being distracted and exhausted.

Give it a twist Sex does not come with a manual, so if you don’t have time for full-blown lovemaking, many other intimacy techniques will do, such as slow kisses in the morning, long kissing sessions before you fall asleep, stroking your wife’s hair, and being silly and funny while making out. This helps boosts and revives the spark in your marriage, reminding both of you that you can still be intimate together and that you are not just parents, but partners as well. Always remember to keep it light and expectation free. Enjoy. (Who knows — you might just find the time after all).

You are the best parent, but babysitters are not that bad

A lot of parents these days have “babysitter frightdisease.” Well, there is no such disease, but seriously some parents need to chill. However, if you are afraid that a babysitter will kidnap or even murder your child, then leave him/her with the parents. It is fine. Take this advantage to go on a date night. Go for dinner or to the movies and act like you did when you first met. Believe it or not, but this will make you more affectionate and put you just in the mood for a steamy night.

The fire of a touch Remember those times when you first fell in love with your other half; nearly any touch, even the touch of a hand, got those butterflies in your stomach moving. Get your partner excited about that touch again. Maybe a massage, foot rub or a head rub would do. Learn to relax touching each other instead of getting stressed that your partner will probably want sex and you are not ready. Once again, free yourself from expectations.

Oh, we have kids? We all know you have kids, but for God’s sake forget about them for awhile, we’re not saying you’ll abandon them, but a conversation that doesn’t include their names or their payments will not harm you very much, will it? Talk about whatever it is you used to talk about together. Keep those conversations alive. Banning any baby talk will really help your sex life get back on track.

That stress is eating you up Sex is one of the blessings that God created between married couples; if anything should be stressing and overwhelming, then it shouldn’t be it. Gina Ogden, sex therapist in Cambridge, MA, and author of The Return of Desire sex, said that sex has become “just one more thing to stress about or squeeze in.” Experts note that removing that stressful question mark from the bedroom is a positive first step toward harmonious evenings down the road. Remember, the best way to get what you want is to ask for it.

High five you two Steaming up your sex life, or even your love life, wasn’t easy, but it was surely fun as hell. That is why; you should celebrate your physical reunion. We’re not suggesting you throw a party, but celebrate it through appreciation and devotion for one another. Celebrate that you didn’t give up, you didn’t compromise on a boring sexless life and you didn’t file for a divorce. You brought a flame of which you thought went to sleep a long time ago. Last but not least, you showed everyone what ‘solid as a rock’ really means. march 2014 | 75

Love & Relationships

Bettina Knows Best‌

Are you Afraid of Getting Hurt & Cheated on Again?

I

Dear Bettina, had a very bad relationship with a guy who hurt me badly, and cheated on me. The relationship problem made me afraid of trusting anyone, and I feel I have no self-confidence. I am afraid to meet someone new because I fear the story might repeat itself. I also worry about the future and always expect bad things to happen. Sometimes I can hardly breath and I feel scared and anxious all the time - please help me I really need your advice.

Thanks alot in advance,

Desperate Girl BY: BETTINA HEMMINGSEN Dear Desperate Girl, First, I want you to accept what happened. Your boyfriend cheated on you and there is nothing you can do to change it. So once you accept it you become ready to make changes and take action. Second, I want you to be aware of all the thoughts that your mind generates around this situation. Thoughts that evoke low self-esteem and self-blaming are self-destructive, negative and revengeful. All these thoughts create emotions such as anxiety, fear, sorrow, hate, etc. It´s actually not the situation itself that creates the trauma, but the way we choose to think about it. Once you become aware of this mechanism you will realize that you decide how much sorrow and pain you want this to cause you. Third, I want you to pay attention to the difference between your life and your life-situation. Your life is the connection to something deeper inside yourself that is in peaceful bliss, whereas your life-situation is the challenges and obstacles, which are a natural part of being human. Once you realize the difference, it becomes easier to dis-identify with whatever unhappiness your life-situation causes you. Finally, I want you to be aware of your ability to stay in the present moment. Listening to your story, it becomes clear that you are either trapped in the past repeatedly going through your relationship or pulled into the future creating irrational worries and fears. Focus your attention on the quality of this moment, and profound changes will occur.

Love, Bettina 76 | march 2014

Mother & Child

Common Mommy/Child Funny Habits

Being a mother has its toll on every woman; however, there is always an upside for everything. In addition to the absolute joy of watching their babies grow, moms become witnesses to some of the weirdest funniest habits that their kids develop, which later turns into a “delightful” source of embarrassment. And what’s even more amusing in the process is that moms also (unintentionally) wind up with their own set of peculiar doings that they don’t even recognize.

MOMMY’S HABITS

childish beats stuck in their heads. Keep showing off those vocals sexy mama; no shame in that.

A B C D E F Geeee…WHAT?!! Whether it’s ABC’s iconic song or a new cartoon’s theme, you’ll often catch mothers humming their kids’ songs, or in some cases singing them out loud (with or without their children around). As there is no time for treating their ears with some R&B beats, those poor moms involuntary get those “bubbly”

Food, Chop Chop… Feeding kids is a daily challenge. And to make it a bit easier, moms chop food to little pieces so that kids can ingest it without trouble. The funny part is that moms get a bit carried away (no surprise there). They end up chopping their kids’ food, their husbands’

78 | march 2014

food, may be even their guests’, and they don’t even bother to fix a meal for themselves. Leftovers become their “main dish.” And to give you a more visual illustration, Actress Alicia Silverstone has posted a video of her chewing her baby’s food before feeding it to him; “carried away” is an understatement here I believe. Hushhhh!!! Every mom knows how tiring it is to get the kids to sleep. When the mission is finally accomplished, they would go out of their ways to “secure the area.” They would lay still, walk on their finger tips, and whisper with the lowest voice humanely possible. What’s odd here is that these precautions become a daily routine even if the kids are not physically in the house. So every night, they will just go mute, hush their husbands, and stay there in fear of waking their kids up. I am a mom by default Once they give birth, motherhood becomes a way of life, which is actually more of sweet than funny (and in some cases creepy). If they hear a kid crying somewhere, they feel the urge to come to the rescue, or if a random kid yells “Mom”, they spontaneously answer. This trait in particular grows with them no matter how old their kids become, and here is when it gets really awkward/funny; especially around the teenage phase. For some mysterious reason, moms find it their duty to pour out the strangest advices to their children’s friends, which of course drives their kids insane, and they’ll be like: “MOM!! Would you please just let me keep this one friend without creeping him/her out?” Oh! Souvenirs… Actress Hilary Duff said that she secretly kept her baby’s belly button after it fell off (Yucky); and if you think it’s just a werid Hollywood thing, perhaps you need to reconsider. Apparently, some moms think that their kids’ body parts are such valuable possessions to be kept forever. Beside belly buttons, some keep their kids hair, others find it weirdly amusing to keep their teeth, and GOD Knows what else.

KIDS’ HABITS Am up! Now what? Although usually the issue is in standing, some kids have it the other way around. You’ll spot those cute little things all sweat and tears doing their best to stand up straight; however, this is not the end of it.

Babies at that age find it more confusing to get back down to the sitting position; they don’t have the balance or the coordination necessary to get their behinds back to the ground. Isn’t that cute or what? I’m a dog…I’m a penguin Ohhh, they just love imitation! And no, they are not that fond of their parents to imitate, but they prefer non-human living things to take after. Some kids would take after their pets, while others proudly improvise. They would bark “good morning” to you, walk on their arms and legs, or even crawl sometimes. Mommy Lite’s blogger Sarah M. states that her 12-year-old daughter went through a phase, when she kept quacking instead of talking; and what’s even funnier is that mommy quacked back! Yaaaay, SLAP! At young age, kids don’t have body synchronization, and they find it hard to confine themselves, especially when they feel excited. They also have no problem whatsoever in making complete fools out of those around them. Some would scream hysterically, others would find it amusing to throw stuff at complete strangers. Karen K. from Circle of Moms blog has her kid taking the word “hyper-active” to a whole new bizarre level. She states that her son slaps his face whenever he feels happy, and when she asked him why he does it, he replied: “because I am insane.” How’s that for weird? There is a bathroom, and I’m not afraid to use it! Kids find pride in showing off their potty training skills. Moms naively look forward to the day their children would use that potty instead of leaking everywhere they go, but they don’t realize that those new learnt skills will come back and hunt them! Some kids find it necessary to practice with every bathroom they come across, even if they don’t want to go! Forensic style Young children are real explorers, and almost everything is new and intriguing for them. For instance, some kids think it’s too “mainstream” to look at things upright, so they will go upside down to see things from “a different perspective” (yup, they are deep like that). Also, there is the usual inspecting of food; kids would stay for half an hour maybe just looking and playing with their food before chewing; that if it’s still edible. In addition to the food inspection, there are the long pauses of curious staring to random stuff, which usually comes before the touching, the throwing, and the shattering. march 2014 | 79

Features Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Hate

I

Drama Queens By: Noha Kandil

really don’t get why people hate on drama queens that much. Let me just start by giving all the haters out there a little heads-up; if you’re going to negatively label someone, perhaps “Queen” is not the word you want to use, just saying! And I truly don’t see the problem in adding a little bit of heart-felt drama to our lives either.

A drama queen is sensitive, soft-hearted and a magnificently creative human being, and instead of being rewarded for her traits, she ends up misunderstood and underrated. I don’t know what exactly triggered me to write about this, but I just felt it’s about time for someone to shed light on the “agony” of all the drama queens (Yes! I’m being serious). So I thought of giving you some reasons why you shouldn’t hate drama queens that much.

Thoughtfully Sensitive I don’t know what planet you live on, but as far as I know, being sensitive is a good thing! I know drama queens are not exactly “normal” sensitive, and I am not denying the fact that sometimes they get a teeny-tiny bit overthe-top; however, their hearts are usually in the right place. And let’s be honest, we live in a world with people pushing you to the edge on daily basis; so just because they’re not thick-skinned as you are, doesn’t mean there is something wrong with them.

Astoundingly Expressive Keeping the ugly crying and the occasional cursing episodes aside, drama queens are not scared to speak their minds. Think about it, how many people nowadays are brave enough to truthfully express how they feel? Very few I believe. These days, even close friends end up holding grudges just because they feel like they’re “too cool” to be bothered to say anything. Drama queens are among those who just call it as they see it (No Filter). I think we all should be more like that.

Cunningly Observant Drama queens are very observant. For a drama queen, nothing just exists. They notice things that the average person might not notice; they hear things that you might not hear, and they even see things that you might not see - totally in a non-schizophrenic way. So believe me, having a drama queen by your side is a plus!

Innovatively Creative I am not talking about the ordinary creativity here. Drama queens have a sort of super ability of creating anything, and I mean ANYTHING, out of nothing! 80 | march 2014

And not only that, they are such good story tellers. Seriously, if you’re not into reading books and not a fan of watching movies either; a hangout or a phone call with a drama queen will get the job done for you. You know what? Actually “Drama Queen” as a label is not that bad after all! Kidding aside, I believe that we all need to widen our scope and be more tolerant and accepting. And Remember, taking too many “Chill Pills” doesn’t make you any better.

Longing for the Sea Search for an Aquamarine BY: NIVINE MUKHTAR

T

he March birthstone is the aquamarine. Aquamarine has captured the beauty of the sea and is symbolized by its name as the name is derived from the Latin word “aqua marina”, which means “water of the sea”. Aquamarine comes in a wide range of shades and colors, from pale pastel, sky blue to blue-green to sea green. The rarest and most valuable aquamarines are those with a deep blue color with no green. Aquamarine is a member of the beryl family, to which the emerald belongs. Legends state that aquamarine is the treasure of mermaids with the power to keep sailors safe at the sea as well as to guarantee a safe voyage. Ancient sailors wore aquamarine talismans, engraved with the likeness of Neptune, as protection against dangers at sea. It was said that the gem’s natural powers could be increased by submerging it into water. The largest aquamarine of gemstone quality ever mined was found in Marambaia, Minas Gerais and Brazil in 1910. It weighed over 110 kg, and its dimensions were 48.5 cm long and 42 cm in diameter. The largest cut aquamarine gem is called the Dom Pedro aquamarine, named after two Brazilian emperors Pedro I and Pedro II. It is an obelisk-shaped originally cut from a crystal that was approximately 45 Kg and measuring more than 0.91 in length. It is now on display at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History. Aquamarine is found in Russia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Kenya, Nigeria, Zambia, Madagascar, Tanzania and SriLanka, but the majority of aquamarine comes from Brazil. The beautiful sea color of aquamarine jewelry will add sparkle and elegance to any wardrobe.

Pisces Fashion Sense It’s very common to see a Pisces woman dress in pastel colors. They love Sea green, lavender, pink and pastel blues. They are romantics and their clothes show it. They like to wear soft, delicate, feminine styles. When you think of Pisces fashion, think romantic and lovely. They wear clothes that are sexy but sophisticated. They wear a lot of dresses and skirts, and love to wear sexy open-toed heels. Pisces Hairstyle She lives in her mind, so she may have so many fantasies about making her hair gorgeous. She would look great in the type of hairstyles that would include long and shiny hair. In addition, the typical Pisces lady will use her strength in choosing her hair color. Usually, she will like to have this shining and sparkling hair that will make her seem youthful and elegant. She could also ultimately add some color, like red or blonde highlights to really frame her little face. What’s it like to date a Pisces woman Pisces women are very captivating and fascinating. She makes a man feel like a man because of her need for a protector and leader. She is charming, soft and feminine. She can see right through a man and she is not easy to fool, so any man better be straight with her and not lead her on, because instead of confronting him, she will simply disappear. She needs to nurture and will give the man orders, but only for his own good. She will make sure he is eating properly and getting enough sleep, sort of like a mother nurturing a child. What’s it like to date a Pisces man Pisces man is the ultimate romantic, the sensitive man who feels with a woman. Pisces male is the ideal zodiac sign for the woman who complains that men are not sensitive enough, this man is. However, he has such an ideal of romance that is unrealistic and will fall out of love when he realizes that there is no such thing as the perfect woman. This man lives in the world of dreams and he needs a woman to keep him grounded. He always seems to choose the wrong woman. Pisces Erogenous Zone The feet are the most sensitive spot for Pisces. Massaging the feet and sucking on toes are usually Pisces favorite and will get them steamed up and ready for action. 90 | march 2014
