THE VALUE OF A
W
e’re witnessing a major change when it comes to the way we live at this day and age. The way we communicate, the way we connect, the lifestyle, the working nature, the eating and sleeping habits, the interests, and the list goes on and on. Taking a look back in the days, everything was a bit more slowpaced, everything took its own sweet time. Every moment was truly lived, and we all were more present.
Time… as valuable as it is, sadly, life’s insanely fast tempo has made us take its value for granted. We barely make time to invest in ourselves, to learn, and to grow. We barely make time to connect with our families and friends. We’ve made time for social media and virtual relationships, rather than creating time for real human interactions, bonding, and expressing ourselves genuinely. We neglect time; we usually think we have a lot of it, and I believe what we really need to do is to assess various aspects in our lives in terms of how much time we invest in each. It is time to reflect on your relationship with your family and loved ones, are you giving them enough of your time? Reflect on your spirituality and your overall wellbeing. Are you giving that enough of your time? Reflect on the trips and your travel adventures. Do you truly live the moment, or are you rather focusing on the numbers of likes you’ll get on social media for every photo you post? Make time to laugh. Make time to love. Make time to learn. Slow down the craze of the virtual life and find the time to live, truly and fully. Invest in your friends and family, let them know what they mean to you, for they will be the ones you grow old with, ones you’ll spend the remaining of your time with. Make time for new memories; for all I know is that you’ll never grasp the value of a moment until it’s gone.

HOW PEPSICO EGYPT BECAME AN ENTREPRENEURIAL HUB IN EGYPT … FOR EGYPT… WITH EGYPT
E
ntrepreneurial positivity is growing in Egypt and more individuals are adopting the initiative to start their own businesses. PepsiCo Egypt, the leading Food and Beverages Company, decided to support the entrepreneurial move and dedicate huge efforts to train and empower Egyptian youth in general and entrepreneurs in specific. PepsiCo has always believed that youth are the country’s core assets; they can face challenges and push their nation forward.
Looking back at PepsiCo’s 70 years in the FMCG’s market, selling a diverse mix of brands cherished by Egyptian consumers, it is a fact that their strength is not only about their contributions through investments. It is well extended beyond this to include everything that create shared values through partnerships and initiatives that serve the Egyptian Community in many ways. “We seek to support the youth and lend them a hand through the cooperation between the sides of what we call the golden triangle: the private sector, the public sector, and civil society institutions,” says Mohamed Shelbaya, PepsiCo’s Egypt CEO. Throughout the years, PepsiCo programs have succeeded to support education, nutrition and sports to further empower Egyptian youth. This comes in line with their global strategy “Winning with Purpose” that reflects their ambition to win sustainably in the marketplace and embed purpose in all aspects of the business through creating shared values. PepsiCo’s journey started with the successful “PepsiCo Schools League” that aims to discover young Egyptian football talents across Egypt to join the biggest national and international clubs, followed by the malnutrition and education program “Tomooh”. PepsiCo joined forces with Ministry of Social Solidarity, UN Egypt and RiseUp to launch “Egypt 2030 Hackathon” aiming to address Egypt’s sustainability challenges, namely zero hunger and gender inequality through exploring innovative solutions in alignment with Egypt’s 2030 Vision and UN SDGs.
Egypt 2030 Hackathon was originally launched during RiseUp Summit 2018 in cooperation with all parties to empower hundreds of young participants through professional workshops provided by PepsiCo Egypt. During the pitch event, the participating teams presented solutions tackling Egypt’s pressing sustainability needs. PepsiCo provided the winning program “َّ هُنHonna” designed by Techie Squad with the necessary technical support, and offered them a fund of EGP 500,000. Stretching beyond these initiatives, PepsiCo has signed a new protocol with the Federation of Egyptian Industries (FEI) to provide youth with employment opportunities in unprivileged governorates. This program is built-on training Egyptian youth in 200 villages and empower them with the needed tools and products to act as PepsiCo’s distributors, and in the future to be professional distributors for PepsiCo and other companies. This project came to light in partnership with Alex Bank, the International Labor Organization (ILO), the Professional Development Foundation (PDF) and the United Nations Population Fund UNFPA. “We connect and support expert organizations, partners and young people to develop and scale new solutions to the critical challenges facing underserved young entrepreneurs... “Youth are agents of change. We’ll seize every possible opportunity to help them build a brighter future,” added Shelbaya.

Egyptian ready-to-wear brand, Camicie, just launched its SS19 collection, The Art of Desert Blanc, drawing inspiration from the desert culture and landscape. Chief-designer Maha Alazm was specifically inspired by the majestic dunes of the White Desert, which she translated into wearable pieces through fabrics and a colour palette to symbolize it. The collection features a total of 15 pieces, varying between shirts, tops and dresses. The materials vary from light to a more substantial feel, like linen and silk to symbolize the different textures found in the White Desert. To complement this, the colour palette offers a representation of a journey; the path between sky and sand. The colours include beige, yellow, white and a soft blue hue, reflecting the different colors found within and around the desert from dawn to dusk.

UNVEILING THE STORY OF NEFRET
here is something truly magical about the precious era of Ancient Egypt, and it comes with no surprise why it captured the attention of thousands and millions of people from around the world. The civilization that transcends time remains a resourceful inspiration to artists, thinkers, and designers. Founded by Manal El Mahdy; Nefret is an authentic and utterly rich jewelry line that aims at reviving the values of Ancient Egypt and bringing them back to life in the modern age.
YOUR DESIGNS ARE STEERED TOWARDS ANCIENT EGYPT. WHY HAVE YOU CHOSEN THIS ERA IN SPECIFIC? Actually it is the other way around. My love for Ancient Egypt was the inspiration for me to start jewelry designing. We’re used to seeing jewelry designs that relate to that specific era, and what I wanted to do is to shed the lights on Ancient Egypt but with a modern take. It is undeniable that this rich civilization has a lot that go beyond stories of kings and queens. That is why I was keen on projecting the philosophies and principles of this civilization in a different way transforming them into artistic jewelry. HOW DID YOUR JOURNEY WITH JEWELRY DESIGNING BEGIN? It all happened by mere coincidence. It was during a wax carving course when I was asked to do a ring. First thing that occurred to me is to place a serpent and the key of life on the top of the ring. It was painted in silver and it turned out looking really nice. When I took a picture of the ring in my hand and sent it to my friends, they actually started ordering it. The reaction I received from people made me realize that maybe it is time to start my own brand. WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW MORE ABOUT NEFRET, THE NAME YOU CHOSE FOR YOUR BRAND. WHAT DOES IT MEAN AND WHAT INSPIRED 20 | MAY 2019
YOU TO CHOOSE IT? In Ancient Egyptian language, Nefret means beautiful, and I found the word very appealing and easy to pronounce. As I already began learning hieroglyphic and with my ever growing passion for Ancient Egypt, I believe that the name to represent my brand should be from the core and essence of this civilization and reflected in its language. YOUR FIRST COLLECTION IS INSPIRED BY AND NAMED AFTER THE ANCIENT EGYPTIAN GODDESS MA’AT. WHAT DOES IT REPRESENT AND HOW IS IT REFLECTED IN THE PIECES OF THIS LINE? Ma’at, a goddess in Ancient Egypt, was the symbol of truth, justice, harmony, and cosmic order. She was depicted as a woman with an ostrich feather placed on her headdress. Ma’at laid the building blocks of human conscience through her 42 laws of virtues and goodness. Ancient Egyptians believed that she came to restore order from chaos. People lived by Ma’at and kings were responsible for maintaining her laws and assuring that their citizens abided by them. Ancient Egyptians believed that chaos is evil, and in order to have a good after life, following the rules of Ma’at was crucial. During the Day of Judgment, all souls were judged in front of 42 judges defending themselves by reciting truths in negative confessions such as “I did not sin.” , “I did not lie.”, “I did not betray.”. The heart then would be weighed against the feather of Ma’at. A
light heart represented a soul free of sins, while a heart that outweighs the feather represents a sinful soul. The essence of this goddess is manifested in a twenty-five-piece collection including symbols like the scale and the feather of Ma’at. YOUR DESIGNS BEING INSPIRED BY AN ANCIENT ERA, HOW DO YOU BRIDGE THE GAP TO COPE WITH TODAY’S MODERNISM? The designs represent Ancient Egyptians and their teachings, rather than anything they wore at that time. Taking a look at the collection, I add a touch of modernism to this ancient era through the materials and the way they are incorporated in the piece. Take for instance the leather collar; it intertwines Ancient Egypt’s majesty with today’s vibrant modernism. That’s what I was trying to do in every piece and I believe it came out as a success. WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS AND GOALS YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE FOR NEFRET JEWELLERY? There are two goals that I have for Nefret. First, is the educational goal in which I hope to make people more intrigued to learn about this rich civilization. As for the second goal, it is the growth and the exposure of Nefret as a brand, both nationally and internationally. I hope that I will be able to place Nefret on the international map of jewelry designing.

DIPS FOR SUMMER LIPS DIY Scrubs for Smoother Lips
I
t’s time for some of the greatest scrubs that’ll help you say goodbye to the dreadful winter lips and welcome softly smooth and silky lips. These natural recipes can easily be mixed at home and stored for later use to keep your lips moist and plumped all summer long!
SUGAR SCRUB The simplest lip scrub you can ever make with products that are definitely hanging there in your kitchen; using sugar, honey and coconut oil the mix exfoliates and moisturizes your lips all at once. 1 tablespoon of honey, 1 table spoon of coconut oil and a couple of spoons of sugar are mixed thoroughly then stored for 2 weeks to use it later. Apply the scrub and massage gently for 5 minutes, rinse and moisturize your lips afterwards.
CHOCOLATE SCRUB This is the kind of scrub you will enjoy as it features our all-time favorite guilty pleasure, chocolate. Using 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder, 2 tablespoons of olive oil, 3 tablespoons of sugar and a little bit of honey the scrub is made by mixing thoroughly until the ingredients are formed into paste; the mix is then stored and used in the same way of the sugar scrub.

HOMEMADE RECIPES FOR A CAFFIENE FIX FRESH MINT ICED COFFEE
Ingredients: • 1/2 cup freshly ground coffee • 2 cups cold water • Fresh Mint Syrup • 1 cup water • 1 cup sugar • 1 big bunch of fresh mint leaves (around 3/4 cup) • 1 vanilla bean, seeds scraped • 2 1/2 tablespoons fresh mint syrup • 8 ounces coffee concentrate • 3 tablespoons milk, cream or sweetened condensed milk • Fresh mint leaves for garnish Directions: 1. To make the cold brew coffee concentrate, combine the ground coffee and water in a jar or bowl and stir well. Let it sit at room temperature for at least 8 hours or overnight. 2. Make a cup or two of coffee and allow it to cool slightly then pour the mixture into ice cube trays and freeze overnight. 3. Add the water, sugar, mint leaves, and vanilla beans to a saucepan and heat over medium heat. 4. Whisk constantly until the sugar dissolves and the mixture comes to a boil. Let it bubble for a minute or so, then reduce the heat and let it cool completely then stick it in the fridge overnight. 5. Use a mix of coffee ice cubes and regular old ice cubes — usually half and half and add them to the glass and pour the syrup on top. 6. Next goes the coffee concentrate and then stir in the cream. Top it off with some fresh mint leaves, and you’re good to go.

What has really changed our teenager at this day and age is certainly the technological revolution that we are currently experiencing. Teenagers today are rising above ideologies and have an optimistic outlook on life.
Today’s teenagers are certainly different. They are the first generation to be hit by technology and social media whose lives are certainly saturated by mobile technology. What makes teenagers today unique and distinguished? What are the forces shaping these new minds? There are hundreds of reasons behind the shaping of these new innovative individuals, but where does it stop? Young people today are spending considerably less time socializing with friends and more time using a screen. Another crucial point to consider is that online content creates unrealistic expectations. To exemplify this further these expectations include body image, happiness and financial factors. Unfortunately, this has made young people feel left out. Research has indicated that girls are somewhat more vulnerable than boys and also cyber bullying is reported as twice as much. A major force shaping teenagers is the technology and globalization. Young people today can’t seem to keep up with what is going on; they are living in a roller-coaster of ideas, innovation and gossip. While they want to be linked to their own culture and traditions they are also attracted with what is going on externally.
