Celebrate Hispanic Heritage

As the fastest-growing minority group in the United States, it’s difficult to even consider Hispanics being in the minority any longer. Their influence, unique voice and culture have created an imprint on society as a whole.

Hispanic Heritage Month was established in 1988 under the presidency of Ronald Reagan to celebrate the people of this heritage. Since then, however, the month has expanded to commemorate Hispanic individuals’ achievements and provide a launching-off point for Hispanic youth to succeed throughout life.

SARASOTA. The Internet has turned into one of the most powerful business tools in modern life. There is no company wishing to stand out that lacks a presence in the Internet, a network that has closed the gap between the large corporations and the small entrepreneur. The stories of business success on the Internet continually increase and the list of the wealthiest businessmen in the world is centered made up of entrepreneurs engaged in the line of business with which they started their activities from home or a college dormitory.

With the emergence of social networks of the so-called Web 2,0 such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, MySpace and others, the user’s interaction has managed to create online communities that simplify communications between people and generate new ways to promote our businesses.

But the question is, how far are Hispanics from this revolution? We spoke with Alvaro Mendoza, considered the person in the Hispanic world with more knowledge about marketing on the Internet and online social networks.

Mendoza was born in Bogota, Colombia 44 years ago, studied psichology but always was attracted by the magic of technology.

This is how he became interested in learning

and teaching about the newly created Internet.

He used to teach classes about the worldwide network to school professors so that they in turn could apply this knowledge to their students. He also discovered that the network allowed him to share information throughout the world and he demonstrated this when for the first time the results of a world skating championship were made available in real time thanks to his vision. It was then that

Alvaro decided to come to the United States to learn more about the Internet and the way to convert this tool into a business. He arrived at Ohio in 1998 and after observing what was being done in the American market he moved to to St. Petersburg and it began his career to become what he currently is, the person in the Spanish-speaking world that knows more about marketing on the Internet, the “godfather of the marketing” as he is referred to by those who know this business.

“In 1998 I created a bilingual portal called “Colombia Index”, I had heaps of traffic and learned about online marketing. The firm that hosted my website was surprised with the quantity of users of my Web page and contracted me to promote its service in Spain. It was then that I learned more about the subject. I wrote 350-page book about marketing on the Internet and began to promote it. Since then I have over 20 selfdeveloped educational products, from books, videos, teleconferences and audio books” says Mendoza.

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage

One of the main focuses of the Hispanic Heritage Foundation is recognizing and celebrating the work of Hispanic Americans making a positive impact on the United States. The Hispanic Heritage Awards have grown into the most prestigious Hispanic honor and event in America, celebrating Hispanic pride, culture and accomplishment every year. Honorees at the awards get to share the stage with youth who have received awards at the Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards. The Hispanic Heritage Foundation also offers networking and support for Hispanic students through the LOFT (Latinos on Fast Track) program. This helps prepare Latinos in emerging positions in the workforce.

While it’s encouraging to have a national event that recognizes the achievements of Hispanics, cities, towns and even families can take it upon themselves to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in their own local ways.

• History lovers can trace Hispanic influences in the Americas and beyond through the last several hundred years.

For example, in 1513 Ponce de Leon landed in Florida during an exploration and claimed it for Spain. Amazed by the beauty of the land, he named it Pasqua Florida, or “Feast of Flowers.”

• Talk about favorite or influential Hispanic leaders in the community or in the family. A leader doesn’t necessarily have to be a famous individual. It could simply be a person who embraces Hispanic culture and guides others through example.

For instance, maybe there is a teacher or mentor with whom children have a special relationship.

SARASOTA. It was inspiring to see the Black and the Latino communities coming together on Tuesday morning.

There are many clouds over the Sarasota Sheriff’s Department handling of the case of Mr. Juan G. Pérez. Mr. Pérez is the Hispanic man kicked by Officer Childrers while he was on the ground and his face covered in blood, according to a video tape and witness testimony - raising serious concerns about the Sheriff’s Department use of unnecessary force. But it was the behavior of police asking the victim to sign a document in which he agreed not to press charges in exchange for $400 that caused Police Chief Peter Abbott to then offer a public apology. At that point, the Hillsborough Sheriff’s Department was called in to investigate and Abbott was subsequently placed on administrative leave.

Regardless of the outcome, the fact that the Black community came out to denounce this case and request an open investigation is unprecedented. To see Black and Latino leaders, side by side, at a press conference in front of the Sarasota Judicial Center is a historic moment for the Sarasota-Manatee communities. This case is about abuse of authority and a clear attempt to silence a victim from the minority community. In the past this may have gone unnoticed and not received any publicity except, this time, Black leaders reached out to their Latino brothers and sisters for an unprecedented public protest.

Those of us who were at the press confe-

rence and witnessed this moment can’t help but hope that this is a beginning of a new experience of “crossing borders,” where both minority groups find common ground in the experience of being victimized, discriminated, silenced and oppressed and join their minds, hearts and voices to work together to put a stop to this shameful and painful cycle. This experience can offer a great model to work together to address many problems that affect both communities - gangs, crimes, school drop-out rates, teen pregnancy and depressed living environments--to find solutions and inspiration that will encourage our youth to stay in school, to dream high, to seize the opportunities that this great nation can offer to build a better future for our families, and ultimately a better world.

This is the fundamental part. You may have the nicest, technologically advanced Website, sell the best product in the world, but if no one visits your Web page you simply will not make any sales. This is one of the principal

components, not only what to sell but how to generate traffic in order to sell it. There are many ways to generate traffic, the free ones which turn out not to be free because you must invest large amounts of your own time, to the fee-based solutions. Perhaps the greatest volume of traffic can be achieved through good indexing in search engines like Google. You must learn how to optimize all marketing that appears on the free traffic generating search engines and for this there are two schools of thought. The first one is paid publicity and the second is free or organic publicity in the search engines. The paid version is known as Google AdWords, in which you buy from Google advertising space on three lines starting with the key search words that people are using or in affiliated sites. There are several traffic generating models available, the best known is payment per click. In the case of free or organic publicity in a search engine, you must know how to optimize your Web pages to let the search engines know that you understand what people are searching for. With the phenomenon of the Web 2,0 we have everything known as online communities. If you do a good marketing effort you can generate lots of qualified traffic that is segmented toward you Website.

In your videos you talk about e-mail lists being the most important factor, why?

There are likely many foods that have been Americanized. However, this month get back to your culinary roots. Entice others who haven’t eaten traditional cuisine to try best-known dishes. For example, how about sharing Mangu, a well-known Dominican breakfast dish made from mashed plantains?

• Share your heritage with others by talking about what makes your family’s customs unique. By talking with friends and others, you can each learn what makes different nationalities and cultures special.

with your subscribers in which all will see themselves benefited. You furnish information to them and they turn into clients. This also works offline. For example, if you go to a barber shop and the barber asks you for your contact data knowing that a person visits his place once every month and you tell him that on the twenty-fifth day you will send the individual an e-mail or post card promising a $2 discount, you will retain him as a client. Or when you go to change the oil in your car, knowing that oil changes come every three months, it is smart to have a list of the auto repair shop’s clients so that they continue going there, or they do not forget to change the oil in their autos and to increase the frequency of oil changes, which is one of the principal ways to increase sales.

This is the importance of lists.

Is e-mail marketing secure?

Online purchasing is more secure than buying by phone or ordering a pizza for home delivery, or when you give your credit card to a waiter at a restaurant. Your purchase is protected by the issuing bank or financial entity and in case of a problem your money is credited and the business establishment is penalized with a fine. This, of course, happens if you buy products that offer a merchandise-return guarantee and are readily recognized, or you have a verifiable telephone or address.

What do you think is the future of the Internet?

The Internet must consolidate itself. A lot needs to be done in the Hispanic world. There are many people who do not know about Facebook or Twitter yet. At one time we used to

think that the online communities were only for young people as happened with MySpace when it started. Now we see other uses such as business. We will see specific platforms for a marketing niche or for a city. The video will be consolidated as a business tool. We already can see how YouTube has high definition. The technology of the podcast in the Hispanic world will develop power.

I believe that this is the adequate time to penetrate the Internet, since we cannot survive without the worldwide network.

Internet is here to stay. In fact, it is here before us and this technological revolution is at the reach of many people around the world.

Easy Ways to Extend Your Car’s Life

In recent years economic setbacks have forced many people to re-think the ways people manage their money. In addition to saving more and paying down debt, they are also striving to get more out of what they already have.

Perhaps this is best seen in the myriad ways in which our nation’s drivers relate to their vehicles, whether in squeezing out more mileage per gallon of fuel or extending their vehicle’s life. One’s ride is often the biggest investment a person makes outside his or her home. Fortunately, there are several steps cost conscious drivers can take to get the most out of their vehicles.

• Make your money work for you.

Drivers spend substantial amounts of money on their cars and light trucks every year. No expense is greater, particularly in recent years, than gasoline. But drivers can make the most of that money and help extend their vehicle’s life expectancy and efficiency by supplementing that costly fuel with a gasoline additive.

Today’s engines have tighter tolerances and thus run hotter than in the old days.

The bi-products of combustion in this intense environment can cause deposits that interfere with performance, often resulting in lost fuel economy, poor drivability that manifests itself in surging, hesitation, stalling, and rough idle, and even engine knocking or difficulty starting.

History of a ‘Pop’ular Snack Food

Today it is primarily popped in small bags in the microwave, but popcorn has been around well before individuals had modern conveniences or even electricity for that matter.

History tells us that the variety of corn used for popping has been around for more than 5,000 years. It is believed by archaeologists and researchers to be the oldest of a group of five sweet corns: Indian corn, pod corn, popcorn, sweet corn, and field corn. While popcorn originated in Mexico, it quickly spread with explorers to Asia, Europe, and eventually North America.

In its early days, popcorn was thrown on sizzling hot stones around the fire, and the game was to catch the popped pieces as they scattered. Eventually “poppers” were invented, and ancient poppers made of soapstone, pottery

and metal have been found in Indian excavation sites. These pots had tri-pod legs and would sit directly in the fire to pop the corn.

Popcorn was enjoyed by many cultures.

Some learned to dress it with oil for added flavor. Early American colonists put sugar on the popped corn and enjoyed it as breakfast. This is believed to be a precursor to the puffed corn cereals enjoyed today.

Eventually popcorn became synonymous with the “big screen,” as a snack enjoyed during theater movies. However, when televisions were invented and people stayed at home for entertainment, popcorn enthusiasm waned for years. It wasn’t until the invention of the microwave oven, and the convenience it offered individuals to enjoy popcorn while watching TV, that popcorn sales rebounded.

Today, the American public eats over one billion pounds of popcorn per year, and the popcorn industry rakes in over $200 billion in sales annually. Popcorn comes in many flavors.

However, traditional butter flavor remains one of the most popular.

Popcorn can also be a healthy part of one’s diet. Plain popcorn (low-fat varieties without a lot of salt, oil or artificial butter) is a very good source of fiber and can help curb appetite when dieting.

The next time you grab a handful of popcorn, think about its long history as a snack food for people around the world.

• Stick to the game plan. It’s no secret people today are busier than ever before. But even drivers who feel overextended need to stick to a game plan when it comes to vehicle maintenance. Most of the common problems associated with automobiles are preventable.

That reality only emphasizes the importance of sticking to a car’s vehicle maintenance schedule.

Such schedules include routinely changing a car’s oil and filters, keeping the injectors and fuel delivery systems clean and maintaining proper tire pressure. Though each of these things is easy and quick, they’re also paramount to keeping a car running strong for longer periods of time.

• Break from the norm. Let’s face it, car maintenance has become a time consuming chore. Vehicle manufacturers have recognized this and are building cars that require less maintenance as in years past. For years conventional wisdom advised drivers to change their oil every three months or 3,000 miles, whichever came first. Nowadays, it’s common for vehicle manufacturers to suggest changing the oil every 6,000, 7,500 and even 10,000

miles. GM’s Oil Life System, now installed in more than 34 million vehicles, frequently indicates even greater oil change intervals.

Conventional petroleum motor oils have begun to dip in popularity in favor of their synthetic counterparts. Synthetic motor oils, because of their higher flash points, better fluidity at low temps and their ability to withstand oxidation and evaporation loss, are far more resistant to varnish and sludge development. As a result, engines run cleaner with synthetics, offering better fuel economy, wear protection and superior performance. Certain premium synthetic motor oils offer oil change intervals as much as 15,000 and 25,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first, without sacrificing protection.

Keeping Calm in a Chaotic World

Living with stress can limit your ability to take joy in life, not to mention hurt your health. According to the Mayo Clinic, stress can cause headaches, insomnia, high blood pressure and decreased immunity, among other problems.

But completely removing stress just isn’t possible, especially in today’s slow economy.

An American Psychological Association poll from September 2008 revealed that 80 percent of Americans felt stress due to the economy -- and the numbers have no doubt gone up since then.

The key isn’t to avoid stress, but to learn to cope with the pressures you must face. You can’t control what happens in the world, but you can control your response to events.

Dr. David Jeremiah author of the book “Living with Confidence in a Chaotic World: What on Earth Should We Do Now?” recommends that stressed-out Americans calm themselves and focus on the positives in their lives.

“Calm,” he says, “is an interesting word that is known more for what it is not: agitation, fear, or turbulence. But ‘calm’ does require some kind of storm, or we would never notice it.”

Use this turbulent time to re-evaluate your life and focus on what’s most important to you.

Look at your relationships. Attempt to change what you can and accept what you cannot.

Try some proven techniques and activities that can help you find peace and calm: • Praying/journaling • Seeking healthy relationships

• Focusing on constructive behavior • Scheduling downtime • Determining to be content

Inmigrantes esperan que haya reforma sanitaria

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Aunque las opiniones están divididas en Washington sobre el apoyo a la reforma sanitaria que propone el presidente Barack Obama, los inmigrantes están esperanzados que se apruebe en el Congreso. Muchos de ellos se verían beneficiados, ya que actualmente son ellos quienes poseen menor cobertura de salud a través del empleo.

Un estudio del Centro sobre Presupuesto y Prioridades Políticas de 2006, que analizó datos de la Oficina del Censo, asegura que más de un 44 por ciento de los inmigrantes no ciudadanos carecen de seguro médico; esto comparado con el 13.3 por ciento de los nacidos en este país y el 17.2 por ciento de los naturalizados.

Entre algunos de los problemas a los que se ven enfrentados los hispanos es que tienen dificultades a la hora de obtener asistencia médica, debido a barreras del idioma y desconocimiento de los procesos para acceder a cuidado médico.

Números confirman obesidad en hijos de inmigrantes

WASHINGTON D.C.- Los hijos de inmigrantes tienden a ser obesos, según un estudio reciente. Quizás esa no sea una noticia nueva, pero sí el que ahora son los números los que lo confirman.

La Foundation for Child Development, dio a conocer en un reporte que por lo menos el 34 por ciento de los niños varones en kinder que son hijos de padres inmigrantes, tienen sobrepeso; esto comparado con el 25 por ciento de los hijos de blancos no hispanos.

(Cuando los niños están en octavo grado el número incrementa a un 49 por ciento, comparado con el 33 por ciento entre los nativos).

Según el reporte, los adultos comienzan a subir de peso cuando ya llevan más tiempo en el país y cuando ya están establecidos y familiarizados con la cultura. Pero, mientras

esto sucede, son sus hijos los que engordan.

“Los niños recién llegados, las familias que menos se han adaptado, tienden a tener más problemas de obesidad”, aseguró el reporte.

En un país como Estados Unidos donde vive una alta población de inmigrantes, muchos de ellos hispanos, estos tienden a padecer de condiciones médicas causadas por el sobrepeso, como el colesterol y la diabetes, entre otros.

El periódico The Washington Post, recientemente informó sobre un estudio federal que analizó a 21,000 niños de kinder a octavo grado, de los cuales una cuarta parte eran hijos de inmigrantes. En este estudio se identificó que entre los niños obesos, una gran mayoría de los padres no habla inglés, y que los casos eran prevalentes entre inmigrantes hispanos y no hispanos.

REFORMA NO SERÍA PARA INDOCUMENTADOS

Aunque en repetidas ocasiones el presidente Obama ha dicho que la reforma sanitaria no beneficiaría a los indocumentados, algunos creen que habría una ayuda indirecta.

Protect Your Family From Swine Flu

As you may know, swine flu (H1N1) has barreled back into the Northern Hemisphere. Swine flu is scary because, unlike the seasonal flu, it can be deadly for young, healthy people.

Tamiflu, derived from an essential oil, is the preferred treatment, but it can only be taken after you have a confirmed case of swine flu. Prevention is your family’s best defense.

Descubren tratamiento para fibrosis pulmonar

ANN ARBOR, Michigan.- El diagnóstico de fibrosis pulmonar idiopática equivale a una sentencia de muerte: no hay un tratamiento para el mal y la tasa de supervivencia es de menos de tres años.

Pero los investigadores de la Universidad de Michigan han descubierto que el tratamiento dirigido a un gen en particular, y que usa estrategias genéticas y farmacológicas, resultó exitoso en el tratamiento de la fibrosis pulmonar en ratones, y se desarrollará para pruebas futuras en humanos.

El tratamiento ataca una enzima que genera oxidantes, la NOX4, que según descubrieron los investigadores está involucrada en el proceso fibrótico, el cual involucra la formación de tejido similar al de las cicatrices en un órgano como el pulmón. Las conclusiones de los investigadores se publicarán en la edición de este mes de la revista Nature Medicine.

La investigación publicada en Nature Medicine muestra el tratamiento genético y farmacológico exitoso en ratones que podría tener impacto en otras enfermedades fibróticas.

Cada día se necesitan más donantes hispanos de médula ósea

DALLAS, TX.- Desde hace tres años Cliff Ackerman se dedica tiempo completo a buscar donantes de médula ósea. Para él lo más difícil ha sido buscar donantes hispanos, a pesar de que son muchos los latinos que necesitan un transplante.

“Necesitamos que el mensaje llegue a esta población”, dijo Ackerman, quien asiste a los eventos latinos y reuniones de iglesias hispanas para crear conciencia. “No se qué es lo que pasa, si es que no conocen en qué consiste o hace parte de la cultura”.

La cifra de quienes esperan un donante de médula ósea va en aumento. Solo un 30 por ciento de éstos encuentra el donante en algún miembro de su propia familia. El resto tiene que esperar a que, con suerte, alguien con quien sean compatibles se registre como voluntario en la lista del Programa Nacional de Donantes de Médula Ósea, (NMDP).

Por otro lado, solo el 55 por ciento de los pacientes latinos llega a obtener un donante de transplante debido a la poca cantidad de donantes registrados.

“No es común que los hispanos y las minorías en general hagan parte del programa”, dijo Steve Lovelace, director del Programa Nacional de Donantes de Médula Ósea. “Entre los hispanos es más difícil”.

La donación de médula ósea no es la donación de un órgano, sino que se extrae la médula líquida del hueso pélvico. Por lo tanto, se trata de una intervención breve que se realiza en

el hospital con anestesia. Después de unas semanas, la médula ósea del donante se repone completamente.

La médula ósea es el tejido de consistencia esponjosa que se encuentra dentro de algunos huesos, como los de la cadera y el muslo. Este tejido contiene células madre, las cuales pueden desarrollarse en glóbulos rojos y blancos. (Los glóbulos rojos son los que transportan oxígeno a través del cuerpo y los blancos combaten infecciones y plaquetas que ayudan a la coagulación de la sangre).

Quien recibe un transplante de médula ósea puede empezar una vida nueva, con salud.

Algunas de las personas que necesitan trasplantes de médula ósea son los pacientes de leucemia, linfoma u otro tipo de enfermedades.

Be Careful with Kids and tubs

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services inform: Researchers say about 43,000 kids a year ago to emergency rooms with injuries from a slip or fall in a shower or bathtub. That’s 120 kids a day. The researchers say more than half of the injuries are to kids younger than age 5.

The American Academy of Pediatrics says young children should always be supervised in a bath and shower. Dr. Gary Smith of Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, agrees, but adds: ``Unfortunately, adult supervision isn’t enough to prevent these injuries. They happen so quickly that a parent simply can’t react quickly enough to prevent them. Therefore, it’s important to prevent them from happening by using a slip-resistant mat inside and outside the bath and shower,’’ said

Dr. Gary Smith.

The research in the journal Pediatrics was done at a facility supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Vivir en EE.UU. ¿causa de cáncer entre hispanos?

MIAMI, FL.- Los hispanos tienen más probabilidad de adquirir cáncer cuando comienzan a vivir en Estados Unidos. El estilo de vida que adquieren en el país podría ser una de las consecuencias que dejan como resultado el desarrollo del cáncer.

Un reciente estudio de la escuela de medicina de la Universidad de Miami asegura que cubanos, puertorriqueños y mexicanos que residen en Estados Unidos tienen un mayor porcentaje de desarrollar cáncer; hasta en 40 por ciento más de aquellos que se quedaron en su país de origen.

“Para las intervenciones especificas en la prevención y control del cáncer, es necesario tener en cuenta las características de cada subgrupo hispano: cubanos, puertorriqueños o los mexicanos”, aseguró Paulo S. Pinheiro, médico y profesor que lideró la investigación.

El estudio asegura que el cambio del entorno y los estilos de vida de los inmigrantes hacen que sean más propensos a desarrollar cáncer.

“Es incomprensible que los grupos donde la integración a la sociedad americana es más fácil… son también aquellos con mayores tasas de cáncer”, dijo Pinheiro.

Los grupos mostraron patrones diferentes a la hora del estudio. El factor nacionalidad, por ejemplo, estaba relacionado con diferentes tipos de cáncer una vez que el inmigrante se traslada a vivir a Estados Unidos.

De esta manera, los inmigrantes mexicanos presentaron una tasa más baja de cáncer en general, mientras que los puertorriqueños tenían las tasas más altas. En los cubanos, la probabilidad de que se desarrollara cáncer era más parecida a la de los blancos no hispanos.

Se cree que el tipo de dieta (alta en alimentos grasos) que llevan los puertorriqueños y los inmigrantes cubanos influye en la probabilidad de adquirir cáncer con más rapidez.

Los hombres cubanos, por otra parte, tienen mayor probabilidad de adquirir el cáncer relacionado con el tabaco; los hombres puertorriqueños tienen una alta incidencia de cáncer de hígado; y las mujeres mexicanas, cáncer del cuello uterino.

Asimismo, el riesgo de cáncer de colon rectal entre los cubanos y mexicanos es el doble, comparado con aquellos que viven en Cuba y en México; mientras que los mexicanos y puertorriqueños que viven en EE.UU. tienen más probabilidades de desarrollar cáncer del pulmón que aquellos que viven en dichos países, respectivamente.

(Platillo para cuatro personas) Ingredientes: 600 gramos de arroz 1/2 pollo en trozos 2 tomates grandes 2 pimientos rojos 2 alcachofas Pimienta Sal 1 diente de ajo Perejil 1/4 de litro de aceite 1/2 limón Especies como romero, tomillo y azafrán

Preparación: 1. Ponga los trozos de pollo en una sartén con aceite para freírlos, enseguida páselos a un recipiente con 8 vasos de agua para terminar su cocción.

2. Después, se fríen las alcachofas y el pimiento, en forma separada. Además, hay que cocinar el tomate y el ajo.

3. Una vez sofreídos estos ingredientes, debe ponerse el arroz con el tomate y el ajo ya sofritos.

4. Para que la paella quede bien, el pollo ya debe estar hirviendo por alrededor de media hora y antes de que se termine de sofreír el arroz con el tomate y ajo, se añade todo.

5. Revuelva todo en una paellera o una sartén grande. Primero se pone a fuego fuerte y a mitad de cocción se baja a fuego medio y tras unos 18 a 20 minutos, más cinco minutos de reposo, ya debe estar lista para servir.

6. Simplemente hay que servir la paella en las cuatro porciones y ya no queda más que disfrutar de este sabroso platillo que cruzó el Océano Atlántico directo para quedarse en nuestras mesas.

CONSEJOS PRÁCTICOS:

1. Utilice aceite de oliva. Con este tipo de aceite se pretende lograr el mismo sabor de una paella como si se estuviera comiendo en la mismísima España.

2. Cocine en una paellera o en una sartén con el tamaño adecuado.

3. Los ingredientes deben estar frescos.

4. El arroz con el que se prepara la paella no se lava para que tenga la consistencia adecuada.

por Enrique Kogan Fue el 25 de julio de 1924 cuando Assar Gabrielsson y Gustaf Larson se encontraron en un restaurante de Estocolmo, el Sturehof. Luego de un par de horas de disfrutar de un buen plato de cangrejo, ambos entusiastas de los automóviles, hablando “cocinaron” una idea que posteriormente se conocería como Volvo.

Pasaron tres años para su fundación en 1927. Con sede en Gotemburgo, Suecia, por el ingeniero Gustav Larson y el economista Assar Gabrielsson.

En latín, Volvo significa “yo ruedo”. El emblema de la marca, el círculo y la flecha, es el símbolo del acero de los antiguos alquimistas y no representa el símbolo del hombre o de lo masculino como muchos creen erróneamente.

Fieles a las tradiciones suecas, el primer automóvil Volvo fue apodado “Jakob”, nombre que viene del día 25 de julio del calendario sueco, fecha en la que precisamente Jakob celebra su santo.

Volvo se ha caracterizado siempre por su atención a la seguridad del automóvil. Su aporte más importante al automovilismo ha sido la invención del cinturón de seguridad de tres puntos, introducido en 1959.

Desde marzo de 1999, la Volvo ha sido propiedad absoluta de Ford Motor Company. La misma forma parte del PAG (Premier Automotive Group). Gran parte del desarrollo de ingeniería y puesta a punto de este modelo fue hecho por Volvo en Suecia; sólo las pruebas de aptitudes todoterreno las realizó Land Rover en Inglaterra.

La expectativa de la XC60 tuvo tanta fuerza como el sedán S60, pero les aseguro que conducir esta SUV es una maravilla. Es utilitaria y versátil, tiene un estilo casi tan espectacular como el del vehículo concepto que fue revelado

en el Auto Show en Detroit.

Además con esta XC60, Volvo utilizó el vehículo concepto para mostrar algunas nuevas guías de diseño que serán aplicadas a todos los futuros Volvo. Esto incluye, de acuerdo con los diseñadores de Volvo, inflar el volumen visual con formas y detalles más expresivos. De esta manera, como en la XC60, la parrilla de todos los futuros Volvo se hace más prominente, con anguladas luces de estacionamiento y faros que barren dentro de las salpicaderas delanteras.

Como look es fabulosa.

La carrocería de la XC60 es ancha y su postura es fuerte, mientras que la sección superior tiene un diseño elegante y deportivo. La sección

de cola es especialmente impresionante, con unas calaveras que caen en cascada hacia abajo desde las esquinas del techo y una ingeniosa puerta trasera de cristal que puede abrirse de tres maneras: completamente abierta o abiertas independientemente las secciones superior e inferior.

Por dentro, la XC60 tiene un tablero central y un panel de instrumentos que parecen flotar adelante de y por encima de los asientos delanteros.

Volvo compara el aspecto del conjunto de instrumentos con el de un abejorro, con un velocímetro analógico redondo como el cuerpo de una abeja y con las alas del display digital a cada lado. Todo un concepto futurista. El tablero central tiene una superficie blanca tipo iPod, con controles que no se hacen visibles hasta que el vehículo arranca.

Otra característica es la tecnología City Safety. Como el control de crucero activo, este sistema basado en radar puede aplicar los frenos del Volvo para mantener una distancia segura entre él y el vehículo que le precede, al punto de llevar al Volvo a una parada total si es necesario.

Acura, Mercedes y otros fabricantes ya ofrecen sistemas similares.

Aunque la XC60 que probé lleva un motor seis cilindros 3.2 litros de 265 caballos que funciona a emisiones reducidas, vendrán otros en camino. Para 2010 se espera que la XC60 tenga disponible un motor Flex-Fuel o incluso diesel o biodiesel como opción, ya que Volvo está entre los líderes en impulsar el desarrollo automotriz del Flex-Fuel.

La verdad que su andar fue súper suave, y la sensación de seguridad está al conducirla.

Ya la época de si es cuadrada es Volvo pasó, hoy si es buena y segura, con seguridad que es ¡una Volvo!

La mansión Vizcaya, hoy museo, fue construida por el empresario James Deering, entre 1914 y 1916, sobre la Bahía de Biscayne, cuando se edificó, era un lugar muy apartado y más de 1000 trabajadores fueron empleados en la construcción, incluyendo artesanos de Europa y el Caribe.

De estilo renacimiento italiano, fue el resultado del ingenio de tres arquitectos: Burall Hoffman diseñó los edificios, Diego Suárez planeó los jardines y Paul Chalfin fue el decorador.

En 1952, el Condado de Miami Dade la compró y la abrió como museo; en 1994, se designó Monumento Histórico Nacional y hoy se encuentra bajo el resguardo de la Asociación de Museos Americanos.

En este bello lugar se reunieron el presidente Ronald Reagan y el Papa Juan Pablo II, fue visitado por la reina Isabel II de Inglaterra y en 1994, fue sede de la Cumbre de las Américas con el presidente Clinton y los líderes del hemisferio.

La casa tiene 70 cuartos y aloja una de las colecciones de arte decorativo más relevante de Estados Unidos, valorada en millones. La colección abarca desde el siglo XVI hasta nuestros días, recorre diversos estilos, incluye mobiliario, cerámicas y porcelanas, vidrios y herrajes, textiles y tapicería.

Sin duda Deering fue un hombre refinado, puso su fortuna para embellecer su palacio donde vivió solamente 9 años. El ambiente luce como lo habitó, se cuida con esmero ya que lo visitan más de 200.000 personas al año.

El jardín hechiza a los visitantes por ser una réplica de los jardines renacentistas, con estanques y estatuas. Se suele celebrar el Festival Rennaisance y conciertos de música clásica.

El muelle, con un toque veneciano, a orillas de la bahía invita a soñar y a preguntarnos por la pasión que inspiró a su dueño a realizar este palacio.

LA MANSIÓN DE VERSACE Y EL BARRIO DE CORAL

Fue, también, pasión lo que motivó al famoso modisto italiano Gianni Versace a comprar la mansión llamada Casa Casuarina, en Ocean Drive, en el corazón de South Miami Beach, la playa preferida de magnates y estrellas de cine durante la década de los años 40 y gran centro turístico en la actualidad.

La bella mansión fue construida en 1930, al estilo español, copia del Alcázar de Colón, con once cuartos cada uno decorado por Versace con pinturas murales, pisos de mármol, baños de oro y vitrales de colores. El salón Safari era el preferido de Versace, en sedas de color rojo y con vista al mar.

Actualmente hay visitas guiadas para apreciar el solar convertido en exclusivo hotel, o bien disfrutar una cena junto a la piscina rodeada de estatuas y plantas tropicales. ¡Un lugar único!

Si seguimos la ruta al sur, en Homestead, encontraremos el Castillo de Coral, una extraña construcción realizada en coral, traído especialmente hasta el lugar. El castillo es el sueño de un joven nacido en Latvia, en 1887, Edward Leedskalnin, que rechazado por su amada, se embarca a América.

Después de mucho andar llega a Florida en 1920 y compra, por 12 dólares, tres acres de tierra en donde decide construir un palacio en memoria de su amada, trabajando con rudimentarios instrumentos levanta torres, tronos,

lunas y soles de coral en medio de un jardín y siguiendo símbolos astrales.

tantes acuden a ver esta extraña imagen de pasión y arte lograda por un inmigrante enamorado.

Precisamente, fue el coral lo que dio nombre a la ciudad de Coral Gables, con avenidas arboladas y bellas mansiones. Cuando el reverendo Salomón Merrick llegó a Florida, construyó su casa con piedra coralina y la bautizó Coral Gables, hoy su casa es museo y guarda la pasión de esta familia por desarrollar la región.

Su hijo, George E. Merrick, en 1911, compró varios acres de tierra con la idea de construir la Venecia de América, con casas sobre los canales pero el huracán de 1926 y la depresión truncaron sus sueños.

Sin embargo, la ciudad se levantó señorial y bella, conservando las antiguas murallas, la Torre de agua Alhambra, el City Hall y el Hotel Biltmore, de estilo colonial floridano, abierto en 1926 y frecuentado por magnates, celebridades y presidentes.

No en vano, el poeta español Juan Ramón Jiménez (que vivió entre 1939 y 1942 en el lugar), le dedicó un libro de poemas: “Romances de Coral Gables”. Y fue un romance de pasión y arte lo que inspiró a los esposos Bartlett, en 1920, a levantar su Mansion Bonnet, en Fort Laudardale, frente al mar.

Frederic Clay Bartlett, siguiendo un estilo ecléctico, creó una gran casa con un estudio para pintar, la decoró con sus pinturas y murales y construyó una sala de música para su mujer Helen Birch, que era compositora.

El sur de la Florida siempre resulta atractivo por su naturaleza, el mar y su agradable clima.

Actualmente, estrellas de cine y de la música poseen en esta zona sus residencias que son tan admiradas como deseadas desde los barcos que recorren la bahía.

Las chicas de “Sex and the City” vuelven a revolucionar Manhattan

Las cuatro chicas de “Sex and the City” (“Sexo en Nueva York”) han vuelto a revolucionar las calles de Manhattan, en donde ruedan una nueva película basada en la serie de televisión que puso de moda los cocteles Cosmopolitan y los zapatos Manolo Blahnik.

Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis y Cynthia Nixon, vestidas a la moda como siempre, han intercambiado besos y abrazos durante el rodaje de la secuela del film que en 2008 trasladó a la gran pantalla las aventuras sentimentales de cuatro sofisticadas neoyorquinas.

Los responsables de la producción guardan como si fuera un secreto de Estado el guión de la nueva película, aunque la prensa pudo enterarse de algunos de los detalles de su contenido gracias a que Cattrall puso sin darse cuenta el texto que estaba repasando al alcance de los fotógrafos.

Recent studies have uncovered alarming facts about breast cancer in the Hispanic population. Despite lower breast cancer incidence rates than African American and

non-Hispanic white women, Hispanic women are 20 percent more likely to die from the disease than any other ethnic group**.

Further, Hispanic women are the least likely to have ever had a mammogram, compared to women of other ethnicities.

La actriz y cantante mexicana es la portavoz de una campaña nacional para solicitar al presidente Barack Obama, una reforma migratoria que saque de la oscuridad a miles de indocumentados.

Méndez, en una conferencia de prensa, agradeció que la seleccionaran como vocera de la campaña y dijo tener esperanza de que los indocumentados puedan arreglar su estatus migratorio en el país.

La actriz se convirtió en la portavoz de la “Caravana de Jesús” tras una encuesta realizada con hispanos, según dijo el activista y empresario mexicano Alex Ruiz, pero no suministró los detalles del sondeo de opinión.

EDITORIAL

El Mes de la Herencia Hispana Este mes cerca de 46 millones de hispanos, celebramos con orgullo nuestra herencia, esa que le ha permitido a esta comunidad convertirse en parte fundamental en la construcción de esta nación.

Hispanos han habido en este territorio desde antes del nacimiento del país. Estados como Florida, California o Texas, por nombrar algunos, tuvieron hispanos desde el descubrimiento y en ellos se habló español mucho antes de hablarse inglés. Pero fue la frontera la que permitió la llegada de hispanos en algunos casos, porque en otros no cruzaron la frontera, la frontera los cruzó a ellos.

La comunidad hispana ha sido pieza clave en la historia y el de-

sarrollo de Estados Unidos y la migración ha permitido construir una comunidad fuerte en número y rica en valores. No hay duda de que los aportes de los hispanos han ayudado a convertir a este en el mejor país del mundo, como los aportes de los italianos, los irlandeses, los chinos o los polacos por mencionar algunos lo hicieron en su momento.

Este es un país de inmigrantes, un país que nació de europeos que vinieron perseguidos por practicar su religión y buscaron aquí que la libertad y la igualdad fueran los fundamentos de esta nueva tierra. Y por eso se levantaron cuando los mismos que los persiguieron vinieron siglos más tarde a oprimirlos. Fueron inmigrantes los que poblaron el oeste, los

que construyeron el ferrocarril que unió al país y permitió su consolidación y han sido inmigrantes los que con sus aportes, invenciones y trabajo han hecho posible el “sueño americano”.

Nuestra comunidad está llena de héroes que han dejado su vida por amor a este país, muchos de ellos son héroes anónimos, muchos de ellos no empuñaron un arma sino un azadón, muchos no pelearon en la guerra sino en la pizca. A finales de 1800 cuando llegaron lo inmigrantes entraban a la Isla Ellis, solo bastaba que se registraran y guardaran una cuarentena. Allí en ese libro quedó escrita la historia de muchas comunidades, pero en la frontera, en el desierto o en el mar de 90 millas no

había libro que firmar, aunque eso no los hizo menos.

Este mes es el mes de nuestra herencia, la de todos los hispanos, no la de los mexicanos o puertorriqueños o cubanos, es la de todos, porque de una u otra forma todos hemos hecho aportes a Estados Unidos y como grupo podemos llegar más lejos de lo que hemos llegado hasta ahora.

Muchas veces existen ambiciones y posiciones egoístas para trabajar en forma independiente en nuestras comunidades, como si una fuera mejor que la otra, como si la cantidad, el idioma o la condición legal hicieran al ser humano superior. Cuando esto pasa, la comunidad se fractura y se debilita. Quizá nos demos cuenta tarde de que la única manera de salir

adelante en este país es si actuamos unidos, conservando nuestras representaciones culturales y nuestro orgullo patrio, pero trabajando unidos como una sola comunidad, diferente entre si, pero con una historia y unos valores comunes.

El próximo año tenemos el reto más grande de los últimos años, el Censo, y ahí no importa si somos o no legales, si somos de un país o de otro, si somos morenos o blancos, lo importante es registrarnos como hispanos para hacernos contar.

Seguramente habrá más de uno que dirá que es diferente porque cree que un papel de ciudadanía le hace desaparecer su origen, pero lo importante como comunidad es que el país sepa cuántos somos.

Siéntase orgulloso de ser hispano y si usted se convierte en el principal motivador de su vecino, el próximo año nos sentiremos más orgullosos cuando los números nos digan realmente cuántos somos.

Some Latin Nations Lead World in Red Tape

Once upon a time, it used to be that communist countries like China had more business-phobic bureaucracies, more red tape and a worse business environment than capitalist ones. Not anymore.

According to Doing Business in 2010, a new World Bank study published this week, China −and, increasingly, Vietnam− offer better conditions to local and foreign business people than most Latin American countries.

The study, conducted for the seventh consecutive year, measures various concrete examples of how easy it is to conduct business in 183 countries. Among its conclusions: - To open a new business, regardless of whether it’s a hotdog stand or a factory, you need to fulfill three legal procedures in Hong Kong, and 14 in mainland China. By comparison, you need to fulfill 15 legal procedures in Argentina and Bolivia, and 16 in Brazil and Venezuela.

- Measured in number of days taken by the legal procedures necessary to open a legal business, it takes six days in Hong Kong, and 37 days in mainland China. Comparatively, it takes 41 days in Peru, 50 days in Bolivia, 60 days in Costa Rica, 64 days in Ecuador, 65 days in Uruguay, 120 days in Brazil, and 141 days in Venezuela.

ANDRÉS OPPENHEIMER equivalent to, respectively, 5 percent of the country’s per capita income in China, 7 percent in Chile, 11 percent in Argentina, 12 percent in Mexico, 13 percent in Colombia, 20 percent in Costa Rica, 24 percent in Peru, 38 percent in Ecuador, 99 percent in Bolivia and 111 percent in Nicaragua.

FIRING HURDLES - Once you have your factory going, if you want to fire a lowperforming worker, you have to pay 10 weeks of salary in Hong Kong, and 91 weeks of salary in mainland China. Comparatively, you have to pay 95 weeks of salary in Argentina and Honduras, 99 weeks in Paraguay, and 135 in Ecuador.

In Venezuela and Bolivia, it’s forbidden for a business owner to fire an employee −no matter if the latter spends the day sleeping on the job.

Venezuela and Bolivia are the world champions of employment rigidity, according to the study.

- If you want to export your products, you have to fill out four documents in Hong Kong, and seven in

mainland China. In Latin America, it’s eight documents in Brazil, El Salvador, Bolivia, and Paraguay, nine documents in Argentina and Ecuador, and 10 documents in Guatemala and Uruguay.

- To import goods, you need to fill out five documents in mainland China, seven in Argentina, Brazil, and Chile, eight in Colombia and Peru, nine in Venezuela, and 10 in Guatemala, Honduras, Paraguay and Uruguay.

‘MOSTLY TIMID’ You get the picture. Overall, an aggregate ranking of the 10 categories in the World Bank study shows that China puts up fewer regulatory hurdles to business people than Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela and most other Latin American countries.

Among the few nations that do better than China in that ranking are Colombia, Chile and Mexico.

Sylvia Solf, one of the authors of the study, told me that some Latin American countries have taken important steps to cut red tape last year. ‘’Colombia and Peru have done a lot of reforms, but in the rest of the region the reforms have been mostly timid,’’ she said.

Citing a ‘’snowball effect’’ of measures to ease business regulations in Eastern Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, she added,

The study, conducted for the seventh consecutive year, measures various concrete examples of how easy it is to conduct business in 183 countries. ‘’There is positive news in Latin America, but there is more positive news in other parts of the world.’’

NOT A COINCIDENCE My opinion: It’s no coincidence that Asian countries have grown faster and reduced poverty much more rapidly than Latin America in recent years. In Asia, they have not only created a more business-friendly climate for foreign investors, but have also made it much easier for their own people to become capitalists, and to create wealth.

If Latin American leaders are serious about reducing poverty, they should start by copying much more aggressively what has been done in other parts of the world −including in communist countries.
