Residents who have pools or spas, or who are building a pool, will be able to fill their pools without penalty from the city after a unanimous approval to amend the water supply shortage stage last Monday at its regular meeting. The city of La Habra is operating under a Stage 2 water supply condition since August 1 because of the sever statewide drought. The condition calls for a 20 percent reduction in outdoor water use by cities and residents. The La Habra conditions included: Watering days limited to twice per week, obligations to fix leaks on properties, limits on vehicle washing and allocations to each property. The city amended the condition on pools and spas to alleviate some burdens of homeowners. See Water Page 14

LHHS only public high school in OC to reach annual goals By Jane Williams La Habra Journal

At lunch time on September 30, an unusual parade of La Habra High School’s teachers and staff made their way across the campus to the theatre/lecture hall in small groups asking each other, “What’s this about? “ while insisting “It’d better be good. I have work to do.” On the stage waiting to welcome them was LHHS principal Karl Zener. As the office staff, campus security and teachers’ aides took their seats in the left side section, the teachers more or less sorted themselves out by departments in the rest of the hall. As the adults settled in the drum line marched through the building making sure everyone was awake and alert. Then Zener began to talk. He said the school had received its report of Adequate Yearly Progress which requires that all public schools in-

AP/honors students and they must each meet goals specifically for their group. The state did away with the previously-used state test, as the schools across the state made the transition

OPINION COMMENTARY

People need to know that they can make a difference You can tell by the television and radio commercials. You can tell by driving through town and seeing the new signage. It’s that time of year again. Election season is upon us. One of the greatest powers we have as Americans is the ability to vote and elect officials and pass measures that have an impact on our lives. As the saying goes, “with great power comes great responsibility.” It is up to each of us as individuals to educate ourselves on the measures and candidates so that we are knowledgeable about our voting decisions come this November. Yes, there are some elected positions that are more interesting than others. For example, many of us aren’t closely watching state or county judicial races to determine who might be voted associate justice, to join other associate justices on an appellate court, or a county judge who we might not ever encounter in our lives. Also, some ballot measures might not seem to have much direct impact on our daily lives and

might not be seen as “interesting.” However, each vote counts. And it is up to us, as citizens to know who and what we are voting for. We in La Habra, don’t have as many local candidate races to vote on this year. Both the La Habra City Council and Lowell Joint School District races were canceled because there was nobody running against the incumbents. La Habra Heights will be voting in a few months for their local municipal positions, so there are no candidate races there yet. However, we do have races for the La Habra City School District and the Fullerton Union High School District board of trustees. In the next issue of the La Habra Journal, we will include information about all of the candidates running for these school boards. In the mean time, it is up to us as citizens to do our own research on who the best individuals might be to help guide our schools for the next four years. As I clarify each year, the LH Journal won’t endorse individual candidates. It is the position of this

British soldiers returning from India in the 18th century brought back with them mementos, as soldiers will do, from the battle front. Among these were a small, almost worthless coin, called a dam. Just like Rhett Butler in “Gone with the Wind,” we can trivialize someone’s comments, surrounding circumstances, etc. by telling them, “Frankly, I just don’t give a damn”.

paper to encourage and do what it can to empower you, the reader, to do what you need to do to come to the best decision for you when it is time to vote. As for ballot measures, I highly encourage you all to read those and vote what you feel is right. As an instructor at Fullerton College, I am somewhat partial and biased toward Measure J that adopts a bond measure to help bring the college campuses (Fullerton and Cypress) up to date and provide greater resources for those who take courses and use the facilities. Further as an instructor, I am somewhat biased toward Measure I, which you can see their ad on Page 20. It is another bond measure that helps improve the facilities at the high schools in the district. This has direct impact on La Habra, seeing that the money would help update and add improvements to two high schools within the city. However, they are bond measures and it is up to us to determine as individuals if we want to support the financial increase in order to

approve these measures. For those measures it comes down to what value we put on education. Again, I am biased, with these two measures. I encourage you all to do your own research on these and all the measures to determine how you will vote in November. Again in the next issue I will try to include some information, both for and against (if applicable), about these measures. It will be up to you to vote. So take the time and start researching candidates and measures, so that you can effectively utilize the power granted to us by the Founding Fathers of this nation. It is our duty, and we need to make the best effort possible. —The Editor

SCORES: LHHS only high school in OC to achieve all goals (From Page 1)

Teachers sat only a little more patiently than their students waiting to hear the meat of his statement. Zener pointed out there were 70 comprehensive high schools in Orange County and they were listed on a large screen for everyone to see as he slowly scrolled through the list mentioning, “Oh look, Brea High didn’t meet their goals...neither did Yorba Linda High. And let’s see how did University High in Irvine do? They missed their goals in math and English.” Then he reached the Freeway schools and pointed out Buena Park and Sonora had met three of their five goals while Fullerton, Sunny Hills and Troy met two each. Finally La Habra’s name came up and it had “YES” in all five columns and the cheers went up and were joined by whoops and a standing ovation on some teachers’ part when it was pointed out La Habra High was the only comprehensive high school out of the 70 in the county to accomplish that. How did they do that? First, it took the effort of the whole school community which was why all the staff was there for the announcement. Days later Zener said, “This was never the goal, meeting the AYP scores for 2014. We were concerned that our exit exam scores, which while decent, had been stagnant for several years. We wanted to get significant improvement in them. Assistant Principal Maureen Stevens gets the credit.” At Stevens’ previous high school there had been an intervention team which looked at students who just missed scoring high enough in English and/or math and provided them with an extra boost. She suggested

What is AYP? AYP is a series of annual academic performance goals established for each school, LEA, and the state as a whole. Schools, LEAs, and the state are determined to have met AYP if they meet or exceed each year’s goals La Habra try something similar but tailored to La Habra’s students. La Habra had large number of students in the same situation so the administration and teaching staff decided to focus on them for 2014. Those students were pulled out of regular classes several times a week and were given special instruction in the areas where they were having particular problems. Two qualified bilingual substitute teachers were hired to make sure they understood the material taught in the classroom. If they did not, then the subs would work with them until they did. Then there were the Saturday boot camps that focused on test taking skills. Meanwhile the students were also taking tests similar to the Exit Exam in their classrooms as were ninth graders and even some Rancho students. Familiarity with the format and style of questions on a test makes for much better scores. Then there were extensive meetings with the parents of English Learners in the fall. Exceeding limits: La Habra High School Principal Karl Zener shared the news of LHHS reaching their goals with the school staff last month at the lecture hall on campus.

Rubio, both bilingual, made sure the parents realized how important the tests were. It wasn’t long before they discovered parents coming in on their own with many more questions on what their students needed to be doing and how the family could help. While the administrators believed the scores would improve, none of them expected the extent of improvement the students made. In fact Zener sat on the news for three weeks. “There is always a chance the state might change the scores, he said, “They’ve done it in the past. I didn’t want to announce this and then have to take it back.” “You know, we’re known for a great football program, a wonderful theater arts department,” he said, “and now we can brag about providing equity and equal access to all our students for education and opportunity.”

Popular food critic, author talks tacos with residents at Library

By Christina Ledesma La Habra Journal

People trickled into the La Habra Library, with tacos and aquas frescas in their hands from the SoHo Taco truck parked outside; to hear OC Weekly editor and national bestselling author Gustavo Arellano, speak about his book Taco USA: How Mexican Food Conquered America. With a recommendation from Arellano, a wellknown food critic who writes the column “Hole in the Wall” for the OC Weekly, the La Habra Library invited Soho Taco to participate in the event. According to Arellano, Soho Taco is one of the best taco trucks in Orange County. Arellano has been writing about food and cultural issues for more than 13 years in the OC Weekly. He spoke at the library about his new book that highlights the history of Mexican food and its impact on America. According to Arellano, Mexican food is one thing that we all have in common. “I think it’s amazing, that here we have a lecture in La Habra in front of a multi-cultural audience and of course it makes sense that we would have tacos….especially here in Southern California,” he said. “We all belong to so many different groups; racial, ethnic, religious, city, we’re split up in so many different tribes really, but the one language we all speak is Mexican food.” Arellano began writing his book in 2009 and published it in 2012. He traveled across the U.S. researching the history of Mexican food and eating it. “Every possible question you have about Mexican food in the United States I answer in my book” said Arellano. When Arellano began to write his book he had two assumptions; one was that Mexican food had been around longer in the U.S. then he thought and second, that there was a difference between authentic and unauthentic Mexican food. When Arellano finished writing his book he

learned that Mexican food had been around in the U.S. for a very long time, and that there was no such thing as authentic or unauthentic Mexican food because every region across the country had their own way of eating it. Arellano’s book is a chronological path through the history of Mexican food in the United States. Each chapter focuses on a certain decade and explains how Mexican food became popular throughout the U.S. During Arellano’s lecture, he shared stories about how tamales and chili con carne were the first popular Mexican dishes in the country and how Cielito Lindo, the historic Mexican restaurant on Olvera Street in Los Angeles, made the first popular tacos in the U.S. He shared how World War II played a huge role popularizing Mexican food, how Taco Bell copied it’s hard shell taco from a Mexican restaurant that still stands today. He even shared the short history of the taco truck and how its popularity has impacted America. Before Arellano became editor at the OC Weekly, he was the managing editor and an investigative reporter who covered subjects like the Catholic Church sex scandal, hate groups and historical stories about Orange County, but his main job at the OC Weekly has been a food critic. Arellano has been a food critic for 13 years and has covered over 1,000 restaurants in Orange County, including many in La Habra. He is also known for his syndicated column ¡Ask a Mexican!, which takes a humorous look at social and cultural differences between Anglo and Hispanic cultures. The column is published in 37 newspapers across the country. With his passion for food and experience covering Mexican issues, Arellano credits his agent as the one who gave him the idea of writing a book about Mexican culture and food. “I remember researching, just to see what the

Volunteers rebuild park with a little Disney magic By Yajaira Perez La Habra Journal

Shovels, rakes, hammers and nails were a few of the tools volunteers used to rebuild San Miguel de Allende Park. Kaboom, a nonprofit organization that builds kid-inspired play spaces, partnered up with Disney and the Institute for Healthcare Advancement to help the city of La Habra. Monday, September 29 meant an early start with concrete mixing and shoveling wood chips, for those volunteering at the park. According to David DeLeon, City of La Habra Recreation Manager, this is the fifth park in the city of La Habra that is rebuilt with the help of Kaboom. However, this time was different because it was the first time Disneyland Resort and Disney collaborated with La Habra also. The day consisted of labor-intensive work, with lunch provided, to rebuild the San Miguel de Allende Park from ground up. All tools were provided and volunteers did not need experience. All that was asked was to bring energy and be willing to work as a team. The children are a priority as the city of La Habra looks to improve itself, by building healthier communities. “If it wasn’t for Kaboom, we would not be able to make the improvements we make to create safe places for kids to play,” said DeLeon. Volunteers sacrificed six hours of their time to create a beautiful park that will last a lifetime for the neighborhood children. “This is an annual project, we actually try to do two builds a year…to bring our cast members together to make a difference in kids and families in our local neighborhoods,” said Jill

Bolton, Director of Corporate Citizenship for Disneyland Resort. In the background, you were able to hear a DJ playing music for the event. The DJ played current hip hop hits, but of course some Disney music as well. The music kept the volunteers going and once in a while, they were able to hear a voice cheering them on. “Almost there guys, only ten minutes left,” cheered Alec Stackhouse, the Kaboom Associate Project manager. The last few minutes were the most exciting. It was time for the ribbon cutting ceremony. A large group of children would get the honor to cut it. The ribbon was unique, it consisted of a large piece of paper where all volunteers were able to stamp their handprint in paint.

However, before the ribbon cutting; a very special guest made an appearance just in time. We all know that Disney brings magic with them, so Mickey Mouse made a grand entrance to surprise the children present and snap some pictures. Mickey even took a ‘selfie’ with Alec Stackhouse from Kaboom. Unfortunately, the magic came to an end as Mickey had to make an exit. The finished product was a brand new park for the children of La Habra. The San Miguel de Allende Park located on 981 N. Euclid St. La Habra, CA 90631 was built with great teamwork from the city of La Habra, Kaboom, Institute for Healthcare Advancement, and the Disneyland Resort and Disney.

Community comes out for Oktoberfest!

By Yajaira Perez La Habra Journal

Oktoberfest, an autumn festival held in Germany with beer-drinking and merrymaking has made it’s way into the city of La Habra. The La Habra Chamber of Commerce held it’s 2nd annual Oktoberfest this Saturday, September 27 and Sunday, September 28 at the Imperial Promenade. The main attractions ranged from kid-friendly games and face painting to a beer garden for those 21 and over. Although, La Habra Chamber of Commerce featured German beer; there were other options like wine and Bud Light. One of the event’s primary sponsors was the Pacific Community Credit Union, which is located in the same parking lot. The credit union raised $5000 to help put on the festival. La Habra Chamber of Commerce Board Member, Tim McAdam, was found running the beer garden for beer enthusiasts. “It is part of us (Pacific Community Credit Union) being in the community. We’ve been in the La Habra/ Fullerton community for over 55 years…so we’ve been very active in the community for a while,” said McAdam. The food fair was expanded from German specialties like sauerkraut to international dishes like Salvadorian pupusas, Mexican tamales, BBQ tritip and pizza. LH Councilwoman Rose Espinoza was selling tamales to raise awareness for her non-profit organization “Rosie’s Garage.” She started this organization to help the youth of La Habra stay away from gangs and emphasize that education is the key to success. Rosie’s Garage recognizes national past time at annual fundraiser By Christie Garcia La Habra Journal

Throughout the early 1900s Orange County cities had baseball games going on in parks and any possible place several days a week. What made these games unique were the Mexican-American men and women of all ages that made up the teams. Nowadays Major League Baseball is well known for its large Latino presence but most aren’t aware of its place in the lives of Mexican-Americans, specifically in Orange County, on a smaller scale. These games were more than friendly scrimmages but also served as a way for Mexican-Americans to come together during a time of animosity towards them. These former ball players, regardless of the years they played, can attribute baseball on being an important contribution to forming a sense of community amongst each other during times of legalized segregation. Just in time for Hispanic Heritage Month, the third annual recognition dinner honoring the history of Orange County Mexican-American baseball brought out former players and their family members on Saturday. The event celebrated the players and also told the story of this little known piece of history. This event was also the third annual fundraising event for Rosie’s

Garage, a tutoring service for kids in La Habra started by C ounci lwoman Rose Espinoza. Espinoza has t r ie d to have a theme relevant to both the histor y of La Habra and the Richard Santillan’s book, Wilson School, Mexican American Basea s e g r e g a t - ball in Orange County ed school for showcases the national growth and Mexicans from pastime’s impact on OC’s Hispanic 1920 to 1950. community. “We decide what we’re going to touch on but it will always be on past history,” Espinoza said. “We’re going more towards Hispanic Heritage Month and cover their history but we’ll always recognize someone here locally.” Baseball is certainly something that is part of a long Hispanic heritage of La Habra. Keynote speaker of the night Richard Santillan has intensively researched Mexican-American baseball from all over the United States, including Orange County, and has written five books with three more currently in progress. Santillan believes this project helps keep these players’ legacies and memories alive.

“Often times what happens is that academics will collect information and then they will write the history for the people so sometimes it’ll be incorrect or distorted,” Santillan said. “We wanted people to not only share their pictures but also to share their own stories. It’s so important that they have a venue that they can do that.” These books include pictures of the players in uniform posing and in action with accompanying captions. Santillan has collected over 3500 pictures, 99 percent of those, he notes, were given by family members directly from their personal albums. Though the pictures are baseball related, the anecdotes following them are more about peoples’ lives rather than their baseball careers. “We’ve strayed away from talking about baseball but rather talked about how it dramatically changed their lives not only in terms of their own personal or family lives but also their community lives,” Santillan said. “Those are the stories we wanted to go ahead and share. It’s what they did for the struggle for civil and political rights.” Not only did these games bring a lot of fun to the communities but it also helped change things for themselves. People would sign up for citizenship classes, raised money to file a discrimination lawsuit, helped register voters and organized strikes. “Baseball truly served as a vehicle to bring together Mexican-Amer-

icans,” Santillan said. “There was a game on the baseball diamond but there was so much politics that was taking place in the seats. It was amazing.” A few of the former players were presented with a recognition award. Most of them were accepted by family members. One of the players actually present was Rose Gomez, who played first base with the team Los Ases between 1947 and 1951. “It’s really nice to see all of the families together again,” Gomez said. The daughter of former catcher Evangelina Morales Olabarria received the award in her honor. “She said those were the best years of her life. She had a blast playing,” said Luisa Olabarria Hurtado. “When she found out my daughter was also a catcher she just said, ‘chip off the ol’ block’ and took her out saying, ‘I’m gonna teach you some things.’ Espinoza believes honoring these ex-ball players is a way to celebrate Latinos as a whole. Some may even have some baseball in their blood and didn’t even know it. “It’s good to know that we have that family lineage. I wouldn’t be where I am if I didn’t challenge myself like they did. I see where it comes from,” Espinoza said. For Mexican-Americans a game of baseball became a game changer for them and their future.

While Sadro said he understands the concerns of making this amendment during a drought, he said the concern for burden on the homeowners was more important and was glad that it was approved.

Sadro added that empty pools can cause an increased health risk for homeowners from falling into them. Further, he added that those residents who have empty pools above the water line run the risk of having their pools “pop out of the ground.”

SPOTLIGHT PLAYER

Justin Osborn: Herald’s high-powered rusher By Jeremiah Girard La Habra Journal

Most sophomores on high school football teams are just starting to get any sort of playing time at all, but Justin Osborn is already one of the focal points of the Whittier Christian offense. Through two games this season, Osborn has ran for 369 yards on 33 carries and two touchdowns. He has also caught four passes for 39 yards and a touchdown. “He is a great all-around player for us,” said head coach Sergio Gradilla. “I see him as the kind of guy who can run for 1,000 yards and pick up 500 yards receiving this year.” Gradilla knew he had something special when he saw Osborn play at the junior varsity level last year as a freshman. “We knew he was good last year when he dominated like that,” Gradilla said. “He is a big, strong back but what has surprised us is his speed. If he gets past the second level he can run away and break off a big gain.” Osborn used to play basketball and volleyball as well but he picked football because of its physicality. “Football is an awesome sport because it is a great way to get rid of all of that pent up anger and stress,” Osborn said. “It is the sport where you can hit a guy.”

In his first two games this season, Osborn has ran for at least 100 yards and led the Heralds to two victories, even though they had to forfeit them. He doesn’t see the team’s winning ways stopping any time soon. “This is a team that can go really far.” Osborn said. “Our offense is deadly and the defense has played really well too. I definitely think we are going to compete in this league and beyond.” The first thing that is noticed about Osborn on the field is the physical style that he runs with. “I have a lot of great coaches here to push me and make sure I am doing the right thing,” Osborn said. “They have taught me about staying low when I run and making myself harder to bring down. They told me to be the one to deliver the hit.” He is all business on the field but Osborn is known as a fun-loving kid at practice and in the classroom. “He is the guy that is always joking around,” Gradilla said. “He shows up to practice with a smile on his face and brings that to this team. But, when the whistle blows and it is time to play he is all business.” He says his favorite subjects are math and history but he does not like English. Since he is only a sophomore, Osborn’s college choice is the last thing on his mind. “I do not know where I want to go

to college,” Osborn said. “But, if I get some offers, I will look over them and make my decision from there.” The Heralds are still a young team

but with Osborn in the mix for the next three seasons, they appear to be in a good place.

17 SPORTS Martin leads Highlanders over colony By Sarah Fenton La Habra Journal

La Habra ended its preseason on a high note by beating Colony, 55-48, at home last Friday night. The Highlanders lost their last two games and were looking to turn things around against the Titans (32) before Freeway league games start last Friday. The Highlanders ran their way to victory with help from running back, Carlos Martin, who led the team with 31 carries for 429 yards and five touchdowns. “I think we’re getting better, but we still need to make some stops,” said La Habra head coach Frank Mazzotta. “I think we’re prepared for league.” The Highlander’s defense set the tone by forcing Colony to punt on its first possession of the game. The Highlanders (2-3) quickly capitalized on the punt return when Eric Lancaster-Garcia ran the ball back 72-yards, scoring the first touchdown of the night. Less than a minute later, the Titans made their way down the field to gain the lead, 7-6, over the Highlanders. La Habra scored two more times and added a two-point conversion before the end of the first quarter, but Colony wasn’t going down without a fight. With less than 30 seconds left in the first quarter, the Titan’s Zachery Fields ran the ball 82-yards for a touchdown. La Habra led 21-14 going into the second quarter.

With a little over six minutes remaining in the first half, La Habra’s quarterback Eric Barriere threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Edrick Flores to advance their lead to 28-14. Both teams battled not only each other but also penalties as they tried to make their way to the end zone. Colony scored with less than a minute remaining in the first half and trailed La Habra, 28-21, going into halftime. The start of the second half brought more touchdowns for both teams. The Highlanders had possession of the ball to start the second half and on their second play, Martin ran the ball 85-yards for a touchdown to advance their lead to 35-21. Seconds later, the Titans ran the ball back down the field 64-yards for a touchdown, making it a one score game. With less than eight minutes remaining in the third quarter, the Highlanders scored one more time and held the Titans for the rest of the quarter. La Habra led 41-28 going into the fourth quarter. Colony had possession of the ball to start the quarter, but was stopped by the Highlander’s defense on fourth down, allowing La Habra to takeover on downs. The Highlanders made their way down the field, which led to Martin’s fifth touchdown run of the night. La Habra led Colony 47-28. Colony continued to fight and scored on three straight possessions, allowing them to regain the lead over

Lady Highlanders roll past Fullerton By Sarah Fenton La Habra Journal

While Monday games are tough for teams coming off the weekend without practice, the La Habra girl’s volleyball team played strong in a 3-0 sweep of Fullerton, Monday night at La Habra High. “Coming off a long weekend, it’s a little rough as a coach because you’re not sure how things are going to go when you have a Monday game and your last practice is Friday,” said Adrianne Spear, La Habra head coach. “I was a little nervous, but they played well tonight.” La Habra (15-6, 2-0) had a phenomenal serving night, allowing them to take all three sets 25-18, 25-10, 25-7. “We served very well tonight,” said Spear. “I don’t think we missed any serves and that was definitely one of the biggest turning points of the game for us.” The Indians (1-5,0-2) put up a fight in the first set, forcing La Habra to dig deep defensively. The Highlanders put everything together and came out fighting on offense in the second set. The two teams traded points to start before La Habra pulled away to a 13-5 lead. “When you have a lead anything can happen and you just hope they can stay on track with that momentum and get through the game,” said Spear. Fullerton added on a few more

points, but La Habra pulled away at the end to win the game. The Highlander’s defense made a big impact on the game, allowing only a few tipped balls to fall. “We did some things that were a little weird here and there, but we made up for that,” Spear said. “They’re starting to really self-correct their mistakes and that’s exciting to see as a coach because you know that what you’ve been correcting, they get it.” By the third set the Highlanders

were full of energy and racked up points against the Indians. La Habra pulled away to an early 20-4 lead over Fullerton before ending the set with a kill from senior Alexis Kolschefski. “I’m proud of them,” said Spear. “I’m always proud of the way they play because they play with a lot of heart and a lot of love for the game and desire to win and that’s what’s fueling them right now.” La Habra’s heart and talent shined

against Fullerton and led the Lady Highlanders to victory. The Highlander’s work ethics at practice will determine how they do in their next matchup against Sunny Hills. “They fight for everything and they play with lots of energy,” said Spear. “I have a bunch of kids that love the game, and when you love the game anything is possible.” La Habra hosted Sunny Hills on Wednesday night.

Raider defense holds off Heralds By Erik Markus La Habra Journal

The Sonora Raiders football team was all business against Whittier Christian winning 63-20. The Raiders are 5-0 with Freeway league games around the corner. Despite the big victory, the Raiders maintained a level of composure and focus in preparation for a challenging road ahead. “It was a good lock up for the preseason, but I feel like our team shouldn’t dwell on it, because we have a season coming up and teams are going to be a lot tougher,” quarterback Cole McDonald said. The Raiders started fast, scoring touchdowns on their first four offensive drives. “I like the way we started. We came out, we got physical at the beginning, ran the ball well, we were good with protecting the ball for the most part,” head coach Paul Chiotti said. Jacob Fimbres found the end zone 4 times to go along with 187 rushing yards and Ben Kim reached the end zone twice including a 57 yard touchdown run midway through the second quarter. “We wanted to come out after a bye week and get after it with our running game and kind of establish our physicality again,” Chiotti said about the approach. The Raiders offensive line continued to dominate the game creating running lanes for Fimbres, Cole McDonald and Ben Kim, and even in the second half after the Raiders second stringers got some action, Carlos Urias ran for 70 yards and a touchdown. “We’re preparing for league. We know our league is going to be really tough this year and so they don’t want

to miss a play, they want to give 100 percent to every play,” Chiotti said. With the success in the running game, the Raiders did not need to rely on throwing the ball too much, but Aashad Womack reached the end zone on a 51 yard touchdown. “Once he threw it up, and I saw the ball in the air, I knew I was gonna score, there was no taking me down after that,” Womack said. Womack leaped for the ball, broke a tackle and dashed for the end zone. The 6’ 5” receiver came to Sonora with the intent to play basketball, but put his skills to work soaring over the defender to make the grab. “I knew against a small corner I could definitely beat him, so after I did, he tried to tackle me and no, I wasn’t having that.” The Whittier Christian Heralds (06) reached the end zone for the first time on a kickoff return from Nick Watase following the touchdown pass to Womack. “We still need to clean up some things on our special teams, we’re unfortunately having a few lapses here and there, missing assignments, we got to do much better. We can’t go into league and give up those easy ones,” Chiotti said. With time running out in the second quarter, Dakota Eckheart grabbed a pass from opposing quarterback Cooper Hughes. His 27 yard return set up the Raiders final touchdown drive of the half. “That felt great man, to see it up in the air and see it coming, I knew that was my moment right there,” Eckheart said. Dakota Eckheart had 5 tackles, two for a loss, a sack and the interception. He leads the team with 39 tackles averaging 7.8 a game. “We’re ready to head into league

and smash,” Eckheart said. At halftime the Heralds started with the ball, and didn’t waste any time working to narrow the gap. Cooper Hughes took a beating from the Raider defense that collected 5 sacks on the day and knocking the two way player out at halftime. In for Hughes, freshman quarterback Quinn Comman threw a 57 yard touchdown to Watase. The Raiders have battled second half defensive lapses early in the season, but were able to keep the Heralds quiet the rest of the game. Carlos Urias responded to the Watase touch-

down, with a rushing touchdown of his own, on a drive where he took the ball on every play. The two teams played with a running clock the entire second half, so scoring was limited, but the Heralds scored again on a pass to Noah Evans just before the end of the game. The Raiders will play Sunny Hills next Friday at home to open Freeway league competition. The Heralds will have a bye week before they head to Valley Christian for a road contest.
