Walnut School principal shares shark side for students

Walnut School PTA finished its second annual candy sale and raised more than $12,000 for the school As a thank you to Walnut School families, Principal Susan Goellrich dressed in a shark costume and wore it for a day last month. Much to the delight of students, she had lunch with the students that sold at least 5 boxes...dressed in the shark costume. In addition, as she had pledged to do, Goellrich wore the costume during the school's Student of the Month Assembly as well. Many students, faculty, staff and parents said they enjoyed this fundraiser, and especially the happiness of the students seeing Goellrich as a shark. Look for more events at the school in the near future.

Quilt Guild delivers quilt to soldier battling cancer

La Habra area Friendship Square Quilt Guild sponsored a fundraiser in April for Ryan Hardy, a veteran who was fighting cancer. Guild Member Shelley Stowell pre-

sented Hardy and his family with the quilt in Houston last week. The quilt was handmade and personalized for Hardy by the Guild members. The back of the quilt is covered with signatures and well wishes from family, friends and the La Habra Community that were collected while it was on display at the Citrus Fair last April. In addition to the quilt, an "I Love La Habra" t-shirt was dropped off at the booth as a gift of remembrance for Hardy from a high school student who was serving that day. He didn't have money to donate so he literally gave the shirt off his back.

Boys and Girls Clubs gets donation

The Boys & Girls Clubs of La Habra received a substantial donation from the estate of Mr. Lyle A. Parks, Jr. which will be used to enhance the lives of children and teens in the La Habra community. Parks played an integral part in shaping La Habra. His company developed and built many buildings in La Habra including the Boys & Girls Club. Parks’ son, Lance Parks, presented the donation.

COMMENTARY

Did you know... By Nicole Panza La Habra Historical Museum

The Junior Woman’s Club sponsored the formation of the La Habra Art Association in 1955 with the objective to promote local artists, provide a venue to showcase their art, and increase art appreciation in the La Habra community. The first meeting of the La Habra Art Association was on Monday January 17, 1955 at the Woman’s Club House. Noted local artist Michael Orogo was the speaker at this first meeting. He specialized in religious paintings in addition to landscapes and still life. The establishment of a gallery allowed the Art Association to feature the work of local artists and hosts classes, workshops and events. Mark Florian, former president of the La Habra Art Association and award winning artist was particularly active in the early years of the gallery. Florian specialized in oil paintings and focused on landscapes and portraits. Some other artists featured include Milford Zornes, Kwok Wai Lau, Rex Brandt, James Couper Wright, Robert E. Wood, Mary Heusenstamm, and

Henry Fukuhara. The gallery was originally located at the La Habra Arts guild building at 1440 W Whittier Blvd. The gallery moved to its current location at 215 N. Orange St. in 1969. It features the work of local artists and hosts classes, workshops and events. The Art Association will be moving soon to a new gallery space near the La Habra Community Center. In addition to the new gallery, the Art Association has a new program, the La Habra Art Walk Association. The Art Walk Association’s goal is to support local artists and artisan vendors and to encourage artistic endeavors in the La Habra community particularly for children and adults with special needs. The La Habra Art Walk Association will have an art walk at the Tamale Festival on Sunday, November 27 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Tamale Festival Art Walk will feature artisan vendors, art from local schools, and children’s craft activities. Just another interesting piece of history about where we live, work, and enjoy being a part of the La Habra community. Sources: www.lahabraartgallery.org; http://lahabraartwalk.com.

Moving LH forward after the election

Many things were said during the course of the election, and many Americans are looking to move forward. That’s the thing about elections, ultimately, somebody will win and others will lose. The same holds true to local elections. Now, La Habra’s elections weren’t as ugly as some of the elections in our neighboring cities (council candidates, school bond measures, and so on). However, the unique thing about local elections as opposed to their national counterparts, is that candidates, win or lose, often still work with each other. They will be at the same community events as well as run into each other at the supermarket. This can make for some initial awkwardness, but we need to keep moving forward, just as we need to do on the national level, and continue with working to make our society and community the best it can be. Now I’m not saying people don’t have the right to be upset with the outcome of an election. That’s the great thing about our country. I’m just saying that if former candidates and their supporters can work together and live together despite their differences on the community level, we should be able to look for ways to do it on the national level as well. Getting back to the local races, and in particular the La Habra City Council, it was four years ago when La Habra took the unprecedented action of cancelling a city election. This was due to nobody running against the three incumbent candidates. So the three, Tim Shaw, Tom Beamish and Rose Espinoza were reappointed to the council. This election, there were three other candidates running against Shaw, Beamish and Espinoza for their seats. However, the residents of La Habra

3

followed suit with what happened four years ago, and re-elected the incumbents. Where four years ago it was suggested that since there were no candidates opposing the three incumbents that residents were pleased with the leadership and direction the city was going. With the outcome of this election, it seems that presumption has been confirmed. The re-election of the council members means that the residents have faith and trust in the direction the city is going. While there are differences in opinion, the residents want to see the council members continue to do what is right for the city and maintain the focus on keeping the city’s best interest at heart. In the other city election, the La Habra City School Board, the newly elected trustees have a big task ahead of them. Sandi Baltes and John Dobson join Cynthia Aguirre, Ida MacMurray and Ofelia Hanson to hire a new superintendent, the person who will lead the school district. A great thing for the transition is that Dobson has been on the board and has been involved in the process of hiring the superintendent from the onset. There isn’t a learning curve with him in regards to catching up. Baltes has previously been on the board and as director of the La Habra Community Collaborative, has been close to what is going on with the hiring of a new superintendent. So, while she is a “newly” elected school board member, she is hitting the ground running and will be able to jump in and not have too much catching up to do. So, as the caring community we are, let's all move forward and work to make La Habra a great place to live, work and go to school. —The Editor

LH Historical Museum Focuses On Digitizing Old Newspapers By Leonardo Romero La Habra Journal

When the La Habra Historical Museum’s former director Suzette Eschberger was diagnosed with cancer in July 2015 the museum’s board of directors asked one of their volunteers to temporarily fill her position. Initially La Habra resident and recent UCI graduate Nicole Panza was only supposed to temporarily replace Eschberger, but was eventually hired permanently after Eschberger passed away two months later. Before being offered the position Panza had volunteered at the museum for two years, and had the opportunity to work close with Eschberger on various projects. “When I first started I wanted to maintain what she’d done,” said Panza. “I wanted to do right by her and honor her memory, because she gave so much of herself to this place.” The museum opened to the public on October 9, 2010 and since then has showcased several exhibits including some on old La Habra businesses, schools, and talented citizens. Their most recent exhibit titled Our Community Cares: A History of La Habra's Non-Profits opened in October, and will remain on display until September 2017. Visitors can also view one of Richard Nixon’s desks and a replica of

La Habra’s first general store within the museum. An Old Settlers Historical Society member recently donated $20,000 towards the museum’s newspaper digitization project. Panza and her staff are currently in the process of working with UC Riverside and other institutions in order to scan and digitize microfilms that contain La Habra Star newspapers dating back to 1916. Their goal is to upload these older newspapers onto an existing newspaper database so that residents are able to do research on their relatives by simply typing in their first and last name. “The goal is to make these newspapers accessible to the public,” said Panza. “I can’t go through these crumbling physical copies, because it’s not a very effective use of time to manually sit there and search for something when it can be digitally scanned and people can search for a keyword to find what they’re looking for.” The Historical Museum is only open on Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m., and admission is free. Local resident Richard Vega moved to La Habra in 2006, and finally had the opportunity to visit the museum with his daughter last week. After a tour with one of the museum’s docents ,Vega was fascinated by the fact that the museum explains in great detail how La Habra became a city. “Anyone that lives in La Habra that has an appreciation for where they live and where they came from

should definitely check out this museum,” said Vega. The museum is currently looking for more volunteers and people willing to become a friend of the museum by giving a modest annual donation of $25. Friend donations assist with the museum’s maintenance expenses as well as the newspaper digitization project. For more information on how to become a museum volunteer or to donate money visit their official website www.lahabrahistoricalmuseum.com.

The three will be sworn in again at the December meeting, but as current council members they are already at work. “This term my goal is to connect with the public more and will therefore be setting up my council connect table at a different location in the City on a quarterly basis for their input and/or questions to better serve them,” Espinoza said. The new council will see a lot of activity in the new year, including the opening of the new city hall. “With so much happening in our downtown, on Whittier Blvd., and

throughout the city,” Shaw explained, “we have a bright future of job creation and new businesses for our residents to patronize, and I am excited to be a part of it.” In addition to the council, La Habra City School District will welcome some familiar faces to the board. Current board president John Dobson was re-elected. He and the board will be joined by former school board member Sandi Baltes. I am so, so honored that I have been elected to the La Habra City School District Board of Trustees by the members of our community," Baltes said. "Being allowed to come back to

work with the wonderful members of the school district community, the district that I have been part of for more than 60 years, feels like coming home." Dobson echoed the sentiment of appreciation. "I continue to be honored by the trust that La Habra residents have shown in me. I thank them for their votes," he said. The school board will have to act quickly as one of their first tasks will be to name a new superintendent. "As we intensify our search for a new Superintendent I am confident that the Board will work very hard to get the right person to fill this vacan-

cy," Dobson said. "Sandi and I have worked together before and I feel very good that the Board, as it is now constituted, will make the right choice." Dobson and Baltes both added that they are committing themselves to improve the district. "I am hoping to help increase the interaction between the school district, and the people of the La Habra Community," Baltes said. "We're all in this together for the success of our students, and I am hoping to be a part of improved collaboration for the success of all of our children, and the betterment of the community as well."

INSPIRATIONAL CORNER By Dennis Laherty, the Co-Pastor of Emanuel Lutheran Church, La Habra

Thanksgiving is here once again. The holiday season has begun with all its planning, celebrations, get-togethers and loneliness. For many who are alone, the loneliness can feel intensely real, especially now. But Thanksgiving can be a time for everyone, whether you’re getting together with people or you’re alone. Many people who think of being thankful consider the material possessions they have and use this holiday to acknowledge how fortunate they are. This is certainly a fine emphasis for the day. For all people, however, I have a challenge. Consider not one or two, but five people who you have known in your life for whom you are thankful. Hopefully at least a couple of these people are an active part of your life these days. But if considering five is a struggle for you, think back over the years of those people who have touched your life in a positive, uplifting, joyous, happy way. It might be a spouse, a child, a parent or a neighbor, a friend or a former teacher. When you think of the five then consider what characteristics does or did that person have that makes him or her one of your five. Finally, whether the person is alive in your life now or from years past, invite the five into the room where you are right now. Thank them for how they have touched your life. Celebrate their continued presence in your life as you appreciate how they helped to make you the person that you are today. Happy Thanksgiving to you all.

A great learning environment in the La Habra City Schools

November 2016

Our mission in the La Habra City School District is to not only prepare our students to thrive in high school, but to have the critical thinking skills and capacity to innovate and collaborate as they pursue careers, college, and active citizenship in a global economy. We appreciate the support of our community in helping us achieve that vision for every child.

Getting ready for the Big One with our district safety plan On Thursday, October 20, the La Habra City School District celebrated a “Shake Out” that had not been seen in our District in the past few years. The School District conducted an Earthquake Drill that involved all nine schools and the District Office. We included all of our 5,000 students and some schools even created scenarios that included power outages, water main breaks and other real life consequences of a major earthquake.

The district-wide drill lasted approximately 30 minutes, and the District Office activated the Emergency Operations Center. This was the first district-wide simulated test using the new digital communications systems that were put into place over the past year. The new digital radio system ensures that the District Office will be able to maintain contact with all of our schools, even if phone lines and other forms of communications are not functioning. The “Shake Out” drill was a major success! We are confident we have the procedures and tools in place to ensure all of our students and staff members are safe in the event of an actual emergency.

Measure “O” modernization building program upgrades school facilities The passage of Measure “O” in 2012 has brought many 21st Century educational experiences to our campuses. The first phase was completed in the Fall of 2015. Key Phase 1 accomplishments include the modernization of “Academy” and “Science” classrooms and the distribution of over 2,000 iPads to students and teachers at Washington and Imperial Middle Schools. Also, courtyard safety improvements were made at Imperial Middle School. In addition, roofing repair/ replacements were completed at school locations most in need. The District costs for the Phase 1 improvement totaled $6.9 million and was funded by Measure “K”, approved by the community in 2000, and our current Measure “O”. La Habra City School District Phase 2 efforts started with improvements to Walnut Elementary School. In 2015-16 improvements were made to the lunch area. The 2016-2017 school–year began with improvements to the drop off and pick up areas; including a new electronic marquee. The first wing of renovated classrooms at Walnut School will be completed this winter. This modernized building will house not only classrooms, but the new library/media center and computer lab. This grade 3-5 site will also benefit from infrastructure and energy efficient upgrades. The District has budgeted $3.5 million from Measure “O” for these improvements. The District appreciates the community support for these improvements by the passage of Measure “O”.

Students Donate Proceeds of Art Sale to La Habra City School District Aspiring artists Doris Deng and Michael Li attended the October 27 th school board meeting in La Habra to make a special presentation. As student artists under the guidance of ARTSTUDIO123 instructor Alan Liang they had created some beautiful paintings that were selected for showing at a charity exhibition held at the La Habra Art Gallery from October 15-31. Artist Andre Ting , accompanied by instructor Liang, introduced La Habra Art Gallery representatives Luz Spanks and Mary Schultz at the board meeting where Doris and Michael had a special gift for the students of La Habra. They had sold some of their work at the art exhibition and presented School Board President John Dobson with two $600 checks, asking that the $1200 donation be used to support the arts program in La Habra City School District. The donation will be provided to Imperial Middle School, the District’s Art Academy. Each year, the California Association of School Psychologists (CASP) recognizes one school psychologist from each region with the Nadine Lambert Outstanding School Psychologist Award. Recipients of the award are recognized for their outstanding work with students, parents, teachers, and administrators. Helen Fernandez, a school psychologist from La Habra City School District, was selected among the nominees from the Orange County Region to receive this prestigious award. Mrs. Fernandez started her career in La Habra City School District in 2010 after graduating from Loyola Marymount University. Since then, Mrs. Fernandez has taken on various leadership roles in supporting the implementation of nonviolent crisis interventions, positive behavior interventions and supports, and conducting comprehensive assessments. Mrs. Fernandez works tirelessly to provide quality supports and services to her students and community. Families and colleagues agree she is a wonderful asset to the community. LHPD trains Spanish speakers through Citizens’ Academy By Jessica Peralta Behind The Badge OC

The adult students were asked to step back, avert their eyes and cover their ears. Once the class was at a safe distance and waiting for the next part of the SWAT demonstration, they experienced an intense bright light and loud boom from the detonated flash grenade. Amid the sound of car alarms activated by the explosion, the students watched in surprise and then broke into applause. Learning how and why devices like these are used is just one of the many learning activities the participants in La Habra’s Spanish Citizens’ Academy have had the opportunity to experience. Now in its fifth year, this program is very popular with our residents. “Each year, it is our goal to strengthen relationships within our community while, at the same time, providing a learning environment for our citizens,” said Sgt. Jose Rocha, who runs the six-week Spanish language program held weekly from 6-9 p.m. at the La Habra Community Center. “It is our hope that, through this outreach, the community learns about their police department and asks questions about pertinent issues facing their neighborhoods,” he explained. On this particular night of class, the 25 or so Spanish-speaking students learned about pet licensing, local wildlife, FireMed, the city’s ambulance subscription program, and volunteer services, like Radio Patrol and the chaplain program. Following the classroom instruction, the class attendees walked over to the nearby police station for the SWAT demo, where they could check out a fully-equipped SWAT truck and learn firsthand how

flash grenades are used by SWAT as an effective distraction technique. The evening concluded with a presentation and demonstration by police K9, Renzo, and his handler, Officer Amsony Mondragon. Students in the class asked a variety of questions and were met with entertaining and informative answers from Officer Ricardo Rodriguez. Rodriguez presented not only the lecture portion of the class, but the SWAT portion as well, since he is one of the members of the SWAT team who also speaks Spanish. This is the second year Norma Perez has been in the Spanish Citizens’ Academy. A volunteer mom (her adult daughter also joined her in the class), Perez likes to keep involved and to

learn new things. She admits that before starting the program last year, she was afraid of the police. “Now I motivate others to participate more in order to have better community involvement,” she said in Spanish. She believes it is important for community members to become involved and to take this opportunity to meet and learn about their local law enforcement. “This is a great way to get to know them,” she said, adding that it comes in handy to know who everyone is in the department, in case issues arise in the community or individual neighborhoods. She wants to encourage other members of the community to lose their

fear of police and understand what law enforcement really does. “They’re there to help us,” she said. She has enjoyed what she’s learned so much that she finds it difficult to pick a favorite topic. “All their work for me is something very big and valuable,” she said. “Every part of what they do – it’s at great danger, but it’s very valuable and wonderful.” The next Spanish Citizens’ Academy will be held in September 2017. The Citizens’ Academy in English will be held in the spring. Applications for either upcoming session are available at the La Habra Police Department-or by contacting the department via email at citizensacademy@lahabraca.gov.

For the sixteenth year, community members of La Habra came out to acknowledge and honor the city's veterans. The annual event took place on Veterans Day at the La Habra Community Center. Veterans were provided a breakfast of SOS, served by the La Habra Host Lions Club and all attendees were treated to a medley of World War II-era songs performed by The Swing Dolls. Retired Marine Corps Warrant Officer and current La Habra Police Department Lieutenant Jason Forgash once again acted as master of ceremonies for the morning's events. The keynote speaker was former US Ambassador Gaddi Vasquez.

Vasquez was also the former director of the United States Peace Corps and a former Orange County Supervisor of the Fourth District. Members of the Blue Star Organization was on hand to recognize families who have relatives currently serving and deployed in the military. The La Habra Historical Museum also had a display of uniforms worn during the 1970s-'90s Los Angeles County Fireman Humberto Agurcia closed the ceremony with "God Bless the USA."

Heralds recognized for touchdowns and charity By Jay Seidel La Habra Journal

While they did not make the CIF cutoff, the Whittier Christian football team was awarded the National Championship for Touchdowns Against Cancer at a ceremony last month. Representatives from Max Preps, Pledge It, and St. Jude’s Hospital were on hand during the Heralds' game against Village Christian October 28. They were on hand to recognize Whittier Christian's national leading effort to raise money for cancer research. The Heralds raised $11,053, more than any other school. Earlier this season, Max Preps and Pledge It joined together with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in support of national Childhood Cancer Awareness Month to create Touchdowns Against Cancer. People

were asked to pledge money for every touchdown a participating high school scored over three weeks. Whittier Christian raised the most money out of any other participating school in the nation. "This September, scoring touchdowns took on a new meaning for high school football teams across America," officials said. More than 400 teams took part in the first ever Touchdowns Against Cancer. The schools combined to score over 4,000 touchdowns and raised over $100,000 to fund life-saving childhood cancer research. Whittier Christian's efforts were inspired by the memory of former student Abbey Schemmer, who lost her battle with cancer earlier this year. The Heralds were presented with the national championship trophy after the game.

Balanced Highlanders upset Oaks Christian in first round of CIF By Jason Burch La Habra Journal

The La Habra football team entered the opening round of CIF in an unfamiliar position, as an underdog on the road, but that didn’t stop the Highlanders from doing what they have done for 18 years under Frank Mazzotta, win CIF playoff games. The Highlanders saved their best showing of the season for when it counted, upsetting No. 3 Oaks Christian 35-28 at Westlake Village Friday night. In a game that had been blow-forblow from the onset La Habra found itself on the road, down a score with under four minutes to go. Trailing 28-21 and facing a 4thand-7, quarterback Zach Fogel scrambled out of the pocket and

made an Aaron Rogers-like jump throw across his body, connecting with Derrick Corso who cut all the way back across the field for a 17-yard score to tie the game with 3:18 to play. Alex Alcocer continued turning the tide in La Habra’s favor when he picked off Matt Corral on the following possession, setting up the game winning score. Fogel took the first snap, read the triple-option perfectly and found Prince Ross wide open in the back of the end zone from 21 yards out to give La Habra the lead with a couple minutes left. Despite the one score lead, there was still plenty of time left for a Corral led passing attack that had already burned the Highlanders on big plays all game long. Enter Mr. Corso. Already owning a

Highlander Water Polo stopped in first round By Jason Burch La Habra Journal

The La Habra Highlanders took the at-large spot for the Freeway League and getting into the first round of the CIF playoffs on November 8 However, the Highlanders ran into a tough Cypress Centurion team in the first round and were

knocked out with a 15-13 loss. The Highlanders fell behind 4-3 in the first quarter, but battled back scoring five goals in the second to end the half ahead 8-7. The second half was all Cypress. The Highlanders offense was held to only five goals in the second half, while the Cypress offense scored eight.

Not stopping: La Habra’s Madison Wheeler pushes through a Lions defender as the Highlanders beat Oaks Christian in CIF playoffs Friday night on the road. Wheeler had 233 yards on 37 carries.

pair of touchdown catches on offense, the senior shifted his playmaking skills to the defensive side for his third act. On the Lions ensuing drive, Corso picked off Corral at midfield with :45 left to seal the hardfought victory for the Highlanders some 67 miles away from home. The Highlanders picked off the Corral three times Friday night, which is newsworthy considering the USC commit had only thrown three all season coming into the game. Isaac Soto Morales’ interception just before halftime set up the Highlanders third score. Madison Wheeler carried the Highlander offense on his back to the tune of 160 yards and a touchdown in the first half. The Lions knew Wheeler was going to get the ball, but just couldn’t stop the two-way workhorse. Wheeler’s dominance running the ball early allowed Fogel to pick the Lions apart in critical situations the rest of the way. He finished with a whopping 233 yards on 37 carries. Fogel finished with four touchdowns on the night (3 pass, 1 rush), and seemed to make the right deci-

sions all night long. For the past three weeks, Mazzotta has talked about his quarterback’s steady improvement, pointing out Fogel’s 4.8 GPA and toughness. Even when the junior quarterback made a mistake, it helped the Highlanders. Fogel’s lone interception came on a 4th-and-long play with nobody open down field, so it basically amounted to a 20-yard punt instead of a sack or incomplete pass. Prince Ross caught the go-ahead touchdown pass and had 136 total yards. La Habra (7-4) will host Redlands East Valley (9-2), Friday at La Habra Stadium at 7:30 p.m. Redlands is coming off a 41-30 opening round win over Great Oak.
