Avocado Festival on hold for 2015 By Daniel Hernandez La Habra Journal

LA HABRA HEIGHTS

With a small city staff absorbing a heavy workload, and a non-existent committee to take the lead, La Habra Heights officials voted unanimously at the November 13 council meeting to suspend the Avocado Festival for a year. The busy election season this March combined with important city issues, like road repairs and the Matrix Oil project, seemed to overwhelm city council members as they considered the amount of labor in organizing the city event, and they all voted to postpone the festival fun until 2016. “We have way too much on our plate,” La Habra Heights Mayor Brian Bergman said while discussing the delay of the festival. Eloise Phillips organized the Avocado Festival last year and formed a group of volunteers after it disappeared during the 2013 season. “It just fell apart,” Phillips said after

the 2013 spring date passed without an event. Karen Vipperman, wife of former council member Howard Vipperman, who resigned as a Heights city official in 2012, organized the event in the past, but everyone, including city officials, seemed to forget about the 2013 festival. The festival is named after the towns widely grown green fruit because of its historical and economic significance in the community. The Avocado Hass Avocado bears a black bumpy outer skin with a more nutty flavorful taste unlike other varieties of the fruit, the California Avocado Commission (CAC) explains on its website. As most people know, the first Hass Avocado tree to exist, which was cultivated by postman Rudolph Hass, grew in La Habra Heights from 1926 to 2002 before succumbing to root rot. See AVOCADOS Page 4

The members of the La Habra City Council voted unanimously Monday to have Councilman Michael Blazey be mayor for 2015. Earlier in the evening’s meeting Blazey, along with Councilman Jim Gomez, were sworn in to serve another four-year term on the council. Gomez was unanimously voted to serve as mayor pro tem for the coming year. The duo were reappointed to the council after the election was canceled due to no opposing candidates. After being elected mayor, Blazey thanked the council for its confidence BLAZEY in electing him 2010- Elected to City Council mayor. EDUCATION He thanked PhD - Penn State former Mayor MS - South Dakota State Tom Beamish BA - University of Oregon for his work and of Academic Facilities for establishing Director at California State University, the economic Long Beach development ad hoc committee and his work helping build businesses in the community. He added that Beamish will continue to work on strengthening the business community. Blazey shared that one of his goals for 2015 will be to ensure the community is prepared for emergencies. He stressed the importance of ensuring the city and residents increased their preparedness in light of the most recent earthquake centered in La Habra and the likelihood that there will be another in the near future. He is looking to reactivate and update a community emergency committee that had been dormant for decades. The committee could help ensure the community stays prepared.

COMMENTARY

Did you know... Esther Ridgway Cramer was born in La Habra on January 17, 1927 to Claude and Ida Ridgway. The Ridgways were citrus ranchers and their home was located on north Cypress Street. Her mother Ida was the daughter of John Leutwiler who came to La Habra in the 1890’s from Illinois. The Leutwiler ranch was located on Palm Street north of La Habra Blvd. Her father’s family settled in the area in 1908. She went to Washington School, graduated Fullerton High School in 1944 and graduated magna cum laude from Pomona College with a degree in biology. She married Stanley Cramer from Fullerton in 1948 and settled in La Habra on a section of the Ridgway ranch. She taught school in Fullerton for a brief period of time. She and Stanley had three daughters. She returned to college to receive her secondary teaching credential and found her love of history when writing a term paper titled “Old Settlers of La Habra.” She was inspired to write her first book, “La Habra: The Pass Through The Hills” in 1969. She then went on to write “The Alpha Beta Story” (1973) for the Alpha Beta Company whose main office was located in La Habra. She also

wrote “Brea, the City of Oil, Oranges and Opportunities” (1992) and “The Bell in the Barranca” (1996). She also was instrumental in beginning the oral history program at Cal State Fullerton. Many oral histories of La Habra residents are on file. Esther Ridgway Cramer passed away on April 15, 2012. Just another interesting piece of the history about where we live, work and enjoy being a part of the La Habra community. Source: Obituary, Orange County Register, May 6, 2012. bring back with them lighter things from other cultures. You sometimes hear reference to what we might assume is a crude word for what most of us today call the restroom. In reality, it comes from the manufacturer from that era of the modern toilet, Thomas Crapper.

Being there is why I’m here.

There has been some discussion about the idea to move the La Habra city hall across La Habra Boulevard. As it stands, it is still in the research/planning stage and there has been no decision. So, it’s not a done deal yet. I have to admit, as a native La Habran, the idea of moving city hall was an odd concept. The civic center has always been where it currently is and how dare it change. Then, there is a question about the cost of the move. That question was the main concern surrounding the remodeling of the La Habra Heights city hall. However, I have since come around and think that a move of city hall might be a good thing. From a traditional standpoint, that new location is actually closer to the what is determined to be the “birthplace” of La Habra (there is a bell monument on the corner to indicate it.) As for the concern for cost, from what I have seen about the city’s projections, it looks as if it will have minimal impact on the city budget.

(They had already been putting money away for some kind of updating of city hall.) The benefit of the change would be to help revitalize the development of La Habra Boulevard. There are already beginnings of a revitalization. The new 7-11 came in and the shops next to it spruced themselves up. Northgate Market is set to do a huge remodel of that shopping complex. Cleaning up, modernizing and bringing in new retailers into the La Habra Boulevard area will be great for the community. A move of city hall could continue this wave of development and revitalization that can stretch along La Habra Boulevard. Hopefully, a restaurant or cafe, along with some retailers will move into the property that used to be the southern portion of Burch Ford on the corner of La Habra and Harbor. This could make for a nice entry point to “downtown” La Habra. We shall just have to wait and see.

Becker takes over as pastor at OLG By Jay Seidel La Habra Journal

For the first time in over four decades there is a new pastor at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. Fr. Edward Becker was installed as the new leader of the church at a Sunday morning Mass. Bishop Kevin W. Vann of the Diocese of Orange presided over the mass and confirmed Becker as OLG’s new pastor. Becker takes over for Monsignor Justin McCarthy who was pastor at OLG since 1979 and retired earlier this year. Becker said that he was pleased with the

smooth transition and looks forward to growing with the parish. Leaders from neighboring parishes and Mater Dei High School were on hand, along with a number of parishioners to welcome Fr Becker. Bishop Vann shared that he and Fr. Becker are both originally from the Midwest and have a similar outlook, as well as being slightly partial to a certain baseball team. Fr. Becker’s appointment as pastor also marked the first day of the Advent and Liturgical Calendar. A reception was held immediately after the Mass, so parishioners could welcome the new pastor.

Its offspring accounted for 95 percent of the avocados grown in California and played a big role in the growing economics, the CAC states on its website. But again, like its bitter fate two years ago, the festival will be skipped in hopes for resurgence the following year’s October meeting Phillips stated that her group would not help organize the event this spring unless the city backed it, and the city is unsure who might take on the task in 2016 either. “I have no information as to who

would organize the event in 2016,” Clark said in an email. Insurance for the event would cost the city $408, according to La Habra Heights City Manager Shauna Clark, and Phillips stated that the group does not want to pay for the insurance or take on the liability of the event. Although council referred to Phillips and the other festival volunteers as a committee, last year’s festivity coordinator asserted at the October meeting that the organizers were only there to assist the city. “I don’t believe there is an Avocado Fest committee,” Jane Williams

said at the November meeting. Council seemed to want the group to become more organized and take on the responsibility and burdens itself, like other events that occur in the city but are not official city events, like the Pet Prescription Team’s events, which takes on its own liabilities. Councilman Kyle Miller stated at this past October meeting that he wants to move toward consistency and treating everyone equally, referring to the other organized gatherings. Williams, who was involved in the last festival, is aware of the amount

of work, and she does not believe the city could pull it off, she stated. And according to Clark, the city did not make money off the event in 2014 but stated in an email that “Last year’s Avocado Festival went well.” “Staff handled the vendor licensing, health permits, fiscal issues and other matters as they always do during the Avocado Festival,” Clark said. With the election coming in March, there is much more work for staff and that’s probably the main factor in suspending the festivities for one year, she stated.

City Communicator Holiday Lights Contest Operation Santa Still Seeking Donations The City of La Habra Community Services Department provides a special holiday season to underprivileged children and their families every December with the Operation Santa Program. Names of families who would most benefit from the program are provided by the school districts that serve the City, as well as by the City’s own Child Development Department programs. On December 20th, families will come to the Community Center to receive their gifts, enjoy a visit with Santa, and other fun family activities. Last year Operation Santa served 800 families with 1,800 children. You can support this very special program by donating nonperishable food items and toys, or by donating gift cards from Target or Walmart (these will be used to purchase items for older children) or from grocery stores. Beginning on November 12th, donations can be dropped off at Operation Santa Headquarters, 250 N. Harbor Blvd. (the old Big Lots building) Monday through Friday, 1:00-5:00 p.m. Prior to that date, donations can be dropped off at the Community Center. Another way to help is by sponsoring a family. Thanksgiving is a time each year that we take a moment to be grateful for what we have in our lives. For two La Habra based churches, Thanksgiving is an opportunity to share with those who might need a little more during Thanksgiving. Freedom House once again prepared a Thanksgiving meal for those who wanted to come by La Habra High School and take part. However, this year, the church members decided to take it further. “Many people who might enjoy a Thanksgiving meal aren’t able to make it here,” said Brian Flores, Director of Ministry Operations. “This year we are taking the dinners to them.” Approximately 150 Volunteers

from the church prepared meals and drove them to people through out the community. Day laborers, homeless individuals, people for whom mobility is a challenge, are just a few of the people who benefited. They traveled to—parks, Home Depot, laundromats, 7-11s and bus stops around the city. Calvar y Chapel in La Habra opened its doors and served those who wanted to enjoy a freshly prepared Thanksgiving meal. The church’s 200 volunteers cooked, prepared and served nearly 1,000 meals and delivered another 30 to those who couldn’t travel. The church meal included families who have attended since the event started in the community six years ago. Plans and preparations for next years event are already underway.

8 FEATURES Community ignores rain to celebrate Tamales

By Yajira Perez La Habra Journal

Rain or shine, the Tamale Festival must go on! The first annual La Habra Tamale Festival took place on Sunday at the La Habra Community Center parking lot. As the rain made its appearance so did the food enthusiasts with umbrellas in hand. The rain wasn’t about to stop them. In fact, the cold weather made people crave the hot tamales, tacos, and pupusas. The city of La Habra hosted this event in order to connect with the large population of the Hispanic community. “The city of La Habra has tremendous diamonds that many times we take for granted…and it is a good opportunity for them to bring their tamales (talent) to an event like this,” said David De Leon, La Habra Recreation Manager. Some of the diamonds De Leon talked about were Rose Espinoza, a council member and creater of the nonprofit group Rosie’s Garage. Her recipe is a traditional family recipe all made from scratch using fresh ingredients. Espinoza, who made and sold dozens of her tamales, added “Buen Provecho!” (Bon Appetit). Local restaurant La Ranchera wanted to bring their tamales to the community event. The line for tamales from La Ranchera, along with the lines for all the tamale vendors, was wrapped around the corner from their booth. While others say the tamale making process brings back memories of family time, story-telling, and laughter such as La Habra Action Council; who were also selling their tamales. The ultimate goal is to make this festival as authentic as possible by providing authentic food and delicacies accustomed by Mexican-American food enthusiasts. Along with the vendors, there were competitions set up for tamales, salsas, and even a churro-eating contest. One of the contestants entered in the salsa contest was Barbara Green, who is a La Habra resident for the past 39 years. She explained she made a chunky salsa in a traditional “molcajete” (a stone tool). Green hopes to see the tamale festival back next year, “I know I will (be back next year)…I’ll be

making empanadas.” As attendees grabbed something to eat, the stage was set for Grammy award winning Mariachi Divas to stomp their feet and sing their hearts out. They sang traditional favorites as well as some holiday songs. They also welcomed the audience to request their favorites. However, inside the community center, the rain did not affect the exhibition and craft vendors who had all their merchandise laid out. One of the many vendors was Yolanda Pacillas, a Whittier resident, who has a passion for making hand crafted items.

“I went to a rubber stamp party, about 20 years ago…and I was amazed at the things you can do with a rubber stamp and paper,” she said. “So it led to painting and mixed media…and I haven’t stopped since.” The ultimate outcome was a success because it showcased vendors who have a true and authentic passion for something and want to share it with the community. Whether it be tamales, tacos, pupusas, music, or hand crafted items. De Leon wanted “to provide a Mexican-American cultural experience as it relates to the holidays and tamales are synonymous with the holidays as well.”

LA HABRA AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

BusinessJournal Preparing our local youth for business By Sandi Baltes and Mark Sturdevant

La Habra High School teachers Matt Tiberg and Kathy Silvas are doing an amazing job of teaming up with the La Habra Chamber of Commerce and the La Habra Collaborative in putting together a highly successful Marketing Business AcademyMBA/La Habra Business mentoring program. La Habra business students are matched up with La Habra business leaders on a weekly basis, learning the “ins and outs” of the businesses world, preparation for potential careers and even opportunities for potential jobs in the La Habra area. Matt and Kathy reported at a meeting earlier this week that they have more than 45 students meeting after school or on Saturdays with their La Habra business mentors and they have an equal number of students and businesses lined up for next semester as well. In short, the program is an amazing success. “The mentoring opportunities provided to the MBA students by members of the La Habra business/service community are making a significant and positive impact on the students’ growth and learning,” said Dr. George Giokaris, superintendent of Fullerton Joint High School District. “The entire La Habra community is benefiting from the partnership. Thank you all for your dedication to

Future business leaders: The members of this year’s La Habra High School MBA program stand together. The students worked with members of the La Habra Chamber of Commerce to learn hands-on real-world experience of running and operating businesses.

this program.” Dr. Karl Zener, principal of La Habra High School noted the work done by the faculty and students. “We are so proud of our MBA program, teachers and students; and we are appreciative of the community’s support as well,” he said. “Offering students the opportunity to get real work experience through the MBA Internship program is exactly what young people need in order to be competitive in our modern economy. We are so excited to have the opportunity to offer our students this experience, and we know that what the students will be able to learn through their internships will be kept with them long past high school. The LHHS Marketing & Business Academy is designed to give students “the edge” that is

needed to compete in today’s highly competitive academic and job markets. The MBA Internship Program is the latest demonstration of students taking the knowledge and skills they are learning in the classroom and applying it to their lives.” The Chamber agrees, experiencing the day to day operations gives students a broad view of management and the responsibilities that business owners operate under every day. Students are in the MBA/mentor program three hours per week for 10 weeks. Each new semester brings new students to the program. Local businesses are welcome to be considered for participation in the program. La Habra High School MBA Directors, Matthew Tiberg & Kathy Silvas. The La Habra Chamber and city staff recently visited Action Trophy as part of the Economic Development Ad Hoc committee business visitation program. Owner, Doug Guimond has been a member of the La Habra Chamber of Commerce since 1979. He believes strongly in doing and keeping business here in La Habra. We enjoyed touring the facility, seeing how the engraving machine works and learning about the various applications used in creating trophies, awards, name badges and more. The personal service Action Trophy provides sets them apart. Bring your idea and Doug will bring it to life, creating a one-of-a-kind memento. Chances are, the trophy in your child’s room or the award hanging on the wall was made at Action Trophy. November 8 was the Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting for the new McDonalds building on Whittier Blvd. Mayor Tom Beamish, Councilman James Gomez, the La Habra Chamber of Commerce and McDonald’s SoCal Vice-President, Ofelia Melendez-Kumpf, were there as Owner, Neal Ruby, the Ruby family, and of course Ronald McDonald, cut the ribbon and welcomed back their customers. The children were entertained by Ronald’s magic show and enjoyed ice cream cones. The original McDonalds was built in 1963. Chamber members enjoyed their Lunch Mob at Portofino Italian

Restaurant. The food was delicious, as always, and the service was wonderful. Owner, Nick D’Egidio shared how it all began 25 years ago. He left his retail sales position and decided to go into the restaurant business. Even though it was a challenge, not having any previous experience, he enjoyed it. It was important to him to have a restaurant with special ambiance and terrific food. Most of all, he enjoys getting to know the people in the community. CHAMBER CHAIRMAN’S CORNER

Finding balance during the busy holiday season By Dr. Joyce Brooks

To thrive we all need a healthy rhythm of work and rest, but most find it hard to get that balance. That is especially true during the holidays when we add shopping and Christmas parties into the mix. For some, December also brings extra work on the job. For example, retail outlets extend their hours and offer discounts to increase sales volume. This can be a great opportunity for sales associates because the longer hours generate extra income. But working overtime takes a toll. Individuals who sacrifice sleep for extra pay increase their likelihood of getting sick. Those who relinquish leisure time become anxious and depressed and miss out on the joys of being fully present with children, spouses, and friends. Regardless of whether our jobs are in retail or other professions, we tend to work more than is good for us. Most work more than 40 hours per week, and many fail to take their full vacation. So if you are blessed to work in a store and earn extra income during this season, enjoy the extra pay, but be sure to build in time to

Cultural Development a path to Economic Prosperity

By Regeanie Corona

Businesses are often so overwhelmed with the day-to-day operations and just staying “above water” that they tend to delay giving attention to strategic planning. This area of business development is critical for continued growth and success, so be sure to allocate some time to it. It is important to first establish direction by ensuring that there is a clear vision, then create goals and objectives to support the vision, and finally identify a clear action plan to execute the goals and objectives. A leader who desires to take their organization to the next level understands that strategic planning is critical to the organization’s effectiveness. It is important to have a clear understanding of the organization’s vision, and then incorporate proper planning so that you develop an action plan with achievable milestones that allow you to execute your vision. Strategic planning requires that you consider where you expect your organization to be in the next three to five years. This planning process should also help the organization to realize its strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. It will also provide key areas to measure effectiveness and impact. Spending appropriate time assessing your organization’s strategic goals is necessary in moving

Regeanie Corona beyond where you currently are. Remember, a good strategic direction takes into consideration: what you are trying to achieve (the Mission); why you are doing it (the Vision); who you are impacting (the Resources, i.e., customers, partners, employees); and how you will accomplish the mission (the Strategy). Maintaining Community Character by Shopping Local By Mark Sturdevant President La Habra Chamber of Commerce

When asked to name our favorite La Habra restaurant, cafe, or shop, we almost always name a unique local business. We embrace the idea of businesses with local character, but often forget their survival depends on our patronage. It is easy for us to get so consumed by efficiency that we forget how much of our lives we spend eating out, shopping, and doing other business. We owe it to ourselves to consider the quality of our experience, and ask if we benefit when we choose a community-based La Habra business. Local owners with much of their life savings invested in their businesses have a natural interest in the long-term health of La Habra. Community-based La Habra businesses are essential to charities and frequently serving on local boards supporting a variety of causes. Yes, there are some corporate chains that understand local participation, but anyone who raises funds for local non-profits will tell you that independents are their base of support. In this increasingly homogenized world, our local entrepreneurs and

Update from the Economic Development Ad Hoc Committee

By Chris Jaramillo and Mark Sturdevant

In March 2014 the Economic Development Ad Hoc Committee (EDAHC) formulated a Six Month Action Plan of priorities/programs that could be pursued to expand and strengthen La Habra’s attractiveness to business investment and assist our current business community. The Six Month Action Plan was presented to the City Council at its meeting of April 22, 2014 and subsequently approved. Below are the items noted within the Six Month Action Plan as approved by the City Council along with a brief update pertaining to each item.

Marketing / Strategy Plan

An Economic Development Strategy will be developed and implemented to attract and retain quality businesses to the City of La Habra that offer employment opportunities for local residents, contribute revenue to support City services, and create economic vitality. The Committee will continue to meet to better understand the region and to identify a strategy plan that attains the goals of the City Council. The Committee will collect and analyze data to identify the strengths and weaknesses of issues regarding economic development. The goal is to create a collaborative marketing and strategy plan that will provide a blueprint on what attracts or detracts businesses from locating/expanding in the City of La Habra. Data will be derived from customer surveys, conversations with business owners, the Business Visitation Program, and census data.

Business Visitation Program

A team consisting of the Mayor, a members of the Chamber, the Director of Community and Economic Development, and an additional member of Community Development staff will visit businesses to engage them to ascertain how they perceive the City, to let the businesses know the City is interested in their vitality, and to identify any improvements the City can make in how businesses

are treated. Visitations have been ongoing and occurring on a monthly basis. Following the visitations, the EDAHC is provided with a summary of the visit. Thank you letters are also sent to each business after every visitation. Should a concern be expressed by the business which involves code compliance, improvement needed within the public right-of-way, or a change to a particular regulation, the item is forwarded to the appropriate departments for action where possible.

Expediting the Approval of Applications

To better assist businesses, the Committee is requesting that the City Council consider expediting approvals of all applications as a result of the new General Plan, and in general, continue to strive to improve permit streamlining. This will be accomplished through reassessment of the City’s processes for permits and business licenses and would also be considered in the Zoning Code update. Staff provided to the EDAHC an analysis of the current development process as it relates to a position paper prepared by the City of Anaheim on their process. In most cases, recommendations made by the City of Anaheim are already a part of the City of La Habra’s development process or La Habra already exceeded the recommendation. In addition, the permitting process will be reviewed and evaluated as part of the Zoning Code Update. The hiring of a consultant was approved by the City Council on August 18, 2014 and the update of the Zoning Code is expected to be completed by August of 2015.

Flexibility on administrative decisions

The Committee is requesting that, through the Zoning Code update, City Council consider granting staff the ability to grant more development approvals administratively. If approved, this task will be undertaken during the Zoning Code update. The evaluation of this process is underway as part of the Zoning Code Update. The hiring of a consultant

Reporting from the field: Members of the EDAHC conducted business visitations with Mayor Tom Beamish, Arco gas station owner Sodhi Shoker and Secretary, Breanna Hurt, Community Development

was approved by the City Council on August 18, 2014. The Zoning Code update is expected to be completed by August of 2015.

Website Improvement

The Committee is recommending that the City have a comprehensive website to link between the City, Chamber, and Collaborative where one can navigate from one site to another without having to use a search engine. The City website will continue to utilize the La Habra Journal and Life in La Habra publication and articles will be placed in the upcoming La Habra Business Journal. Further, the Economic Development Division’s portion of the City website will be broken down into two sections: Business Attraction and Business Retention. The Business Attraction webpage will be designed from the perspective of a new business operator and will contain information he or she would need to establish a business in the City such as business licensing, planning, and building inspections, etc. The second section will provide information to existing business operators wishing to expand their businesses. The Chamber web-site went

through its responsive web-site upgrade and will be adding these links as they become available.

Banners

City staff and the La Habra Chamber of Commerce’s focus is to help promote business and convey a message that demonstrates support for buying and receiving service from local vendors. The light pole type banners will be displayed along major streets containing a picture or logo of a local business and a small description of the company. *The Banner Program was presented and approved by the City Council on November 3, 2014. The City Council has limited the first phase of the program to 75 banners. Upon review the Council will consider moving forward with additional banners to insure it serves the community. ------------------------------*The La Habra Chamber of Commerce has already begun taking orders for the first phase of 75. If you are interested in learning more about the program or having your own banner displayed, you can call the Chamber at (562) 697-1704

Consolidated Plan 2015-‐2020/ Annual Action Plan 2015-‐2016

Tell Us What Are Your Community Needs

The purpose of this community meeting is to provide a forum for residents and interested organizations to express their views on the City’s development of the 2015-‐2020 Consolidated Plan and 2015-‐2016 Annual Action Plan. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has established several national goals that guide the use of CDBG Funds. The three broad goals include “Securing Decent Housing,” “Providing a Suitable Living Environment,” and “Expanding Economic Opportunities.” The Consolidated Plan is developed to determine how these goals will be met within the City of La Habra. The principal purpose of the Annual Action Plan is to show how the CDBG Funds will be expended during the year in a way that addresses the needs, priorities and objectives contained in the City’s Consolidated Plan. Join us and share your views.

Four Sonora High School seniors have partnered up with Soles4Souls, a non-profit organization which distributes collected shoes and clothes to give to children in need. According to Soles4Souls.org, the non-profit also oversees the provision of “qualified micro-enterprise programs designed to create jobs in poor and disadvantaged communities.” Ben Rico, Christian Miller, Jake Rosander, and Christian Rhodes have donated over 10,000 pairs of shoes with the help of family members, friends, and different groups. Soles4Souls has granted the Sonora seniors to hold a community distribution of their own since reaching the 10K mark. 100 pairs of new shoes will be given to 100 needy children. The kids range from kindergarten through fifth grade. Teaming up with the Salvation Army and Lunch4LA, the boys have planned a day for the children receiving the shoes. The days festivities include face painting, music, custom painted shoes, free mittens and beanies, sack lunches, and an appearance from Santa who will hand out gifts. In addition to being exceptional community youth leaders, all four boys are scholar athletes. The event will be held this Sunday from 1:30 to 5 p.m. at 12000 E. Washington Blvd. Whittier, 90606. — Gigi Gradillas

Lady Highlanders get new coach and outlook By Sarah Fenton La Habra Journal

Basketball season is quickly approaching and while change is expected with every team, the La Habra girl’s basketball team is welcoming more than just new players to the team this season. Along with new players, the team welcomed a new coach after previous head coach Jim Bohn resigned for personal reasons. Frank McCarroll, who is also La Habra’s athletic director, coached girl’s basketball from 1999-2001 and is looking forward to coaching the Highlanders this season. “Being a basketball coach intrigued me and the more I thought about it I thought Id go for it and see what happens and that’s why I’m here,” McCarroll said. In addition to having a new coach, the Highlanders are also entering season with a young team. The varsity team includes one senior, five juniors and five sophomores. Despite being young, the team is experienced and most of the girls played together on varsity last season. “All the sophomores played varsity, but they are a young team,” McCarroll said. “At the varsity level you’re playing against older, experienced players and your youth sometimes shows through and that’s what we’re working on right now.” With the transition to a new coach, the lady Highlanders were unable to compete in a summer league, but they’re making the most of preseason games and practices to catch up. “We’re behind,” McCarroll said. “We didn’t have the summer. A lot of times with summer you put a lot of your stuff in. We’re kind of doing our summer stuff now in preparation for our first game.” While the Highlanders continue to prepare for league, their chemistry from last season is what will drive them to do well this season. “Their strength is probably their togetherness, the fact they like to be with each other on the court and work together,” McCarroll said. “They’re a very good team in that respect. We have some depth at guards as well.”

“hardI want them to play every night

regardless of who we’re playing against, give 100 percent for each other and to try to be the best that they can be.” —Frank McCarroll Head Coach, La Habra The Highlander’s work well together and are quickly getting used to their new coach and his approach to basketball. “Our weakness is probably just their inexperience with me as their head coach and dealing with a new philosophy and new approach.” McCarroll said. “It will take some time but I’ve seen some great strides made in the last few weeks.” While it’s still early in preseason, the Highlanders’ practices and games are starting to pay off and are enhancing the team’s chemistry. They played their first preseason home tournament game against Canyon on Monday and won 38-37. The Lady Highlanders will also compete in the Whittier Christian tournament next week. “We’re coming along and I’m happy with the effort the kids are putting in,” McCarroll said. “They’re working hard, and we have a good balance. They’re a good close-knit bunch, they like each other and they’re friends as well as teammates. It’s an exciting challenge.” La Habra will take on San Dimas in the next round of the Lady Highlander tournament on Tuesday night. “I hope to see a strong, consistent effort from them. I want them to play hard every night regardless of who we’re playing against, give 100 percent for each other and to try to be the best that they can be.”

Raider hoops look to continue success By Erik Markus La Habra Journal

The Sonora Raiders boys’ basketball team finished with an undefeated league record and competed in last year’s state playoffs. Coming off an impressive finish to last year’s season, the Raiders are primed to follow it up with an even better season this year. But before looking forward, here’s a look at some of the highlights. The Raiders finished 29-5 last season. It was their best since 2008-09 when they finished 27-4, led by Chris Bearden, Marcus Farrand, and Raffi Chalian. The Raiders went undefeated in the Freeway league. They made it to the Division 2 Southern Section Title game. The Raiders made a run at the Division 2 State title for the first time in over 30 years and even won their first round matchup against Monache High School. That said, the Raiders surpassed expectations and now get the opportunity to back up last season with potentially an even greater season. They return four of five starters, and will add players from last year’s 10-0 JV team. All of this combined with the leadership of Coach Mike Murphy who has more than 900 victories under his belt provides reason for optimism. “That experience that we had last year is huge, it can only help us, but you know anything can happen. You have one bad night in the playoffs and your season is over. The Raiders have taken an active approach on this season in order to

improve. Rather than sitting on the potential for a great season, they have seeked opportunities to improve. “We’re just working on getting better, to get prepared for our league,” Murphy said. The Raiders were knocked out of the state tournament by St. John Bosco but have been competing in their (St John Bosco’s) fall league. This has allowed them to face some of the stiffest competition in Southern California. “The preseason we’re playing is ridiculously hard. There’s a chance we could play three of the top 15 team in the state this week, and then we’re playing in the highest division down in San Diego where we are going to see some of the best teams in the state, so we’re playing some great teams,” Murphy said. The Raiders open the season against La Costa Canyon from Carlsbad, who Murphy compared to the Mater Dai of San Diego. The Raiders will be led by seniors Josh Rodriguez and Ben Rico, along with Steven Murphy, and Christian Rhodes. Aashad Womack appears to be the primary newcomer to the starting lineup. With a starting five led by seniors, the Raiders will have plenty of experience and leadership to make up for the loss of Adam Marlow who graduated in June. “Every basketball coach knows that from your junior year to your senior year is a huge growth period. You’re just so much better in that next year,” Murphy said. Murphy remained focused on the

league. The Raiders will inevitably have a target on their back as they enter the season so his goal is to get through the Freeway League first. “It’s never easy, I’ve been in the league 25 years and I know how hard it is to go 10-0 in the league,” Murphy said. “They’re young, so they have no idea how hard it is to get where they got last year. Everything has to fall right. Everything fell perfectly for us last year. It is really, really hard to go 10-0 in league, its hard enough just to win your league, and then to get to the finals, it’s ridiculously hard,” Murphy said. Murphy highlighted the hunger that his team has kept since their exit from the playoffs. “Guys are pretty hungry, because we didn’t win it last year, we lost, so they’re very hungry,” he said. The Raiders varsity team will add three talented sophomores, Austin Carter, Kevin Marlow, and Bryce Rutledge, along with 6’ 8” junior Steven Riley. At a glance the Raiders will look significantly larger. The Raiders have not only been in the weight room, but also have 4 guys 6’ 6” or taller. The size may not play a factor on the offensive end, as they plan to still get out and run, but defensively they will be able to guard bigger players and protect the rim better. “We’re going to play as fast as we can play,” Murphy said. While some teams struggle at playing fast, the Raiders are at their best with more guards running up and down the court.

Jay Seidel/La Habra Journal

Josh Rodriguez is one of Sonora’s returning players that will help lead the team this season.

“Teams don’t practice playing fast every day, we practice playing fast every day,” Murphy said. The Raiders will look to turn games into a track meet but Murphy isn’t worried about fatigue. “It’s only 32 minutes, they’re only 17. 17 year olds should not be tired in 32 minutes,” Murphy said.
