LH assessing roads, filling potholes By Jay Seidel La Habra Journal

Jay Seidel/La Habra Journal

Road repair: Recent rains have caused more potholes to appear along the major streets of La Habra and La Habra Heights. City officials of La Habra have sent out crews to fill some of the potholes, like these along Lambert Road. Officials said they are assessing the major or arterial roads and developing a pavement plan.

Nearly 200 artists will be exhibiting and selling their artwork as the Hillcrest Festival of Fine Arts rolls into La Habra Heights. The festival, which will be celebrating its 57th year of showcasing art, will run February 24, 25 and 26, at the Hillcrest Church 2000 West Road in La Habra Heights. In addition to the exhibitions, many artists will personally be demonstrating their artistic skills during the three-day event. According to organizers, attendees will see watercolor and oil paintings, unique handmade jewelry, ceramics, pottery, hand-woven clothing, photography, stained and fused glass, bronze and metal sculptures, carved wood, and a great selection of handcrafted one-of-a-kind items in the Arts & Crafts Boutique. Each year, many first-time exhibitors, as well as long-time favorites, are selected to participate. Local high school students will

display their artwork in a juried exhibition that will showcase their talents and skills. There will be free art workshops for children on Saturday and Sunday, and festival attendees can browse, shop, enjoy musical entertainment, and eat at the Starving Artists Cafe. The festival organizers announced that Gerald Brommer and Jon Oakes will be the Festival's featured artists. Both artists will be present during the festival weekend. Brommer, born in Berkeley, California, is a renowned watercolor and acrylic painter, collagist, innovative teacher, author and juror. He has exhibited in many national competitive watercolor shows and has had over 165 one-man shows. He has written 23 books for high school and college art classes, as well as a book for artists on emotional content in landscape painting and several bestselling books on watercolor and collage.

Oakes was born in Minnesota, raised in North Dakota, and moved to California to attend college. While in school, Oakes studied ceramics; he was particularly drawn to the bright, fiery colors that defined the ancient process of raku. About 16 years ago, an opportunity arose to study glass-blowing at Santa Ana College. Always intrigued by the art of glass-blowing, he jumped at the chance and quickly grasped this new medium. Before long, glass became his main focus. According to festival organizers, Oakes' vibrant and artistic expression is varied, from extravagant floral chandeliers to contemporary standing lamps, spectacular fluted bowls, elegant lidded vessels, floral bouquets and abstract wall art and unique tile mosaics. Admission and parking for the festival is free. Hours are 10 a.m.–5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 11:30 a.m.– 5 p.m. on Sunday. A number of potholes appeared in La Habra’s major roadways after the recent rains. City crews have been starting to fill in some of the holes along Lambert, but residents are voicing concern over the overall repairs. The city completed a seven-year pavement program for the city’s residential streets. The task cost the city approximately $18 million and was completed in early 2016. In addition, many of the city’s alleyways have also been repaved. However, the challenge remains to be the roadways through the city, which handle the bulk of the traffic. According to Mayor Pro Tem Tim Shaw, Whittier and Beach Boulevards, along with Imperial Highway are all maintained by Caltrans. “We have two major projects approved: Harbor and Euclid, from Imperial Highway south to city limits,” Shaw said. The southern portion of Harbor Boulevard, which runs along the winding border with Fullerton, is set to be repaved this year. The cost of the project is being shared with Fullerton. The project will cause some congestion in the Harbor corridor into the city. The pavement project on Euclid will also start this year and will be south of Imperial and run all the way to Fullerton. Shaw added that the city council has directed the city staff to develop a plan for the arterial roadways that is something similar to the residential pavement management plan. Despite these plans, many residents are concerned about an increased amount of potholes that have developed along the main streets. Shaw said that while the staff is working on developing a plan, they will continue to address the immediate concern of the roads. “In the short term, public works crews are filling potholes as they open up,” Shaw added. The city will continue to look for federal funding opportunities because, according to Shaw, the state has been particularly weak at funding transportation in recent years. Drivers are cautioned to avoid the potholes while driving and to report any severe road damage or deterioration to the City Public works Department.

OPINION

Did you know... By Nicole Panza La Habra Historical Museum

In February 1939, the Kiwanis Club assumed the sponsorship of Boy Scouts Troop #98. Part of their goal in sponsoring the Boy Scouts was to help provide a designated space for the troop to meet. The old Scout Hut on Central Ave was obtained in the early 1940s to provide a permanent meeting place for troop meetings. Title was turned over to the city for tax purposes and an organization called Scout Hut Incorporated was formed to manage the property. The building was rebuilt and used actively until the late 1960s. In March 1960, the Kiwanis Club decided that the old Scout Hall was limited in its usefulness and planning was started for the development of a new Scout building. The new Scout building was incorporated into the planning of a new city park at Idaho and Lambert in December 1961. The property on Central Ave was sold and the funds were used towards the construction of the new building. Construction was started on the new Scout Building in October 1968. The completed building was dedicated February 8, 1970, after a total cash expenditure of $41,167.38. The property belongs to the City of La Habra and is currently being used as a city storage facility. In Spring 2017, the Boy Scouts will once again have a designated space for their troop meetings in the new building next to the La Habra Community Center. They will share the space with the Woman’s Club whose clubhouse was too

costly to repair and the Art Association whose gallery will be torn down along with the old city hall. If you are interested in learning more about any of the organizations mentioned above please visit the La Habra Historical Museum’s current exhibit Our Community Cares: A History of La Habra’s Non-Profits. The La Habra Historical Museum is located at 215 E La Habra Blvd. and is open every Saturday from 12 to 4pm. Just another interesting piece of history about where we live, work, and enjoy being a part of the La Habra community. Sources: La Habra Historical Museum Archives

A community built upon a friendly rivalry It’s interesting, as I go around and talk with people in La Habra, and to some extent in La Habra Heights, that while our community is close, there is still one divide that is hard to get over. Are you “Blue and White” or are you “Blue and Gold”? For those that don’t know because you moved here or went to school in another area, the divide comes in being either for La Habra or for Sonora. Like many rivalries, the La Habra and Sonora rivalry runs through generations. They are passed on by family members and fueled by the schools students attend. Lines are drawn. I am regularly questioned as to my loyalty and my sense of fairness when there seems to be too much of one school covered in the sports pages of the La Habra Journal. (Trust me, there is no bias one way or the other. It’s usually more of a manpower and availability issue.) Despite living physically close to one of the two, I’ve known parents to send their children to the further of the two, because they went there and no way their child was going to the opposite school. Current students of each school at the sporting events maintain the rivalry. On the field LHHS has the perpetual football domination and is a leader in the fall sports. However, on hardwood courts, the edge shifts to the Raiders. The soccer fields and pools typically enjoy a back and forth while the baseball and softball powers split between Sonora and La Habra respectively. The student sections at the sporting events fuel the spirit of rivalry. Having covered LHHS and Sonora at other Freeway League school over the years, there is nothing that compares to the student sections at the city rivalry. I’ve seen some try to come close, like Servite with Sonora in basketball and pretty much every one tries to match LHHS when they play the Highlanders in football. But nothing is consistent like the crowds at the LHHS-Sonora games. The themes created by the students, the chants and the volume of students are unbelievable. Then, there are the alumni to factor in. If alumni are in town, or decide to go “check out a game,” the game they want to go to is a city rivalry game. My brother-in-law rarely misses a La Habra football game. A school he played for years ago and still roots for today. So you combine rabid student sections with passionate alumni and you have packed gymnasiums or fields. This was evident at the last two rivalry basketball games. At LHHS, standing room only caused people to

push in on the corners of the court. At Sonora, there was an attempt to control the amount of people due to the fire hazard, but the crowds still swelled and were even more fired up. The rivalry continues to build each and every year. Even when not referencing the sports, the rivalry still continues. Students wear their colors proudly throughout the city. There are usually nods or shaking of head when they are spotted. Older generations will talk with others around town. When a new person is introduced it is often accompanied by the “…but he is from La Habra,” or “…it’s OK, she went to Sonora.” This is used as a note to say they are an alright person, like a “goodfella,” or to solicit some sympathy and further solidify the alumni bonds with a friend. There are many split households in the city. I live in one, as do a number of the current council members. I am a La Habra alumnus, while my wife went to Sonora. In an odd instance, I knew the majority of her classmates, because I went to elementary schools and Washington, which at the time were all in the Sonora portion of the district. There are even split households with children at both of the schools. The current Miss La Habra, Kristen Sauceda comes from that type of household. She recently graduated from Sonora while her brother goes to La Habra. Their parents have both schools’ logos on their cars. So while we come together like the great community we are, we can keep our friendly rivalry. None of our close neighbors have this split. Whittier has many high schools, which makes rivalries hard. Fullerton’s odd number of high schools make a true city rivalry impossible. Brea stands alone with one high school. The La Habra-Sonora rivalry remains a part of who we are as a city. So, be proud when you wear your blue and white or your blue and gold, you are a part of what helps make this community special. —The Editor **NOTE** I know Whittier Christian falls within our borders, and there are many Heralds who are active members of our community. There is no disrespect meant to the wonderful faculty and staff and the outstanding students at WCHS. It’s just that this city public school rivalry existed long before WCHS moved into the old Starbuck campus. We all welcome the cardinal and gold into the community.

INSPIRATIONAL CORNER By Dennis Laherty, the Co-Pastor of Emanuel Lutheran Church, La Habra

Valentine’s Day is coming. Since the middle ages this saint from the third century has been commemorated in some fashion by people of various backgrounds in many parts of the world. Whether you are Roman Catholic, Lutheran, Episcopalian or any other Christian denomination that acknowledges St. Valentine, or you’re simply someone who appreciates the day, you know what is celebrated; LOVE. There are several versions of who the saint was or what his role in life really was or whether the day commemorates one person or a compilation of different people. The one point that is agreed upon is that love is the common thread. It’s a big day for cards. It’s also a big day for candy. For some couples it will serve as the perfect time to begin an engagement leading to marriage. For school children it serves as a time to let somebody else know that you’ve noticed them. However the day is acknowledged, commemorated or celebrated, it certainly is a widely popular day. With our government seeming ill at ease, I’d like to think of unlikely combinations of politicians sending Valentine’s Cards to each other. Democrats, Republicans, Independents setting the day aside to focus on loving each other. Members of Congress and the Senate could set aside disharmony during a hearing process by either exchanging a card or maybe sharing a box of chocolates. A White House press conference on Valentine’s Day could include flowers exchanged among the press corps and the Press Secretary along with a word of love or kindness. What a day it could be. Oh well! However you celebrate the day this year, keep a sense of love in its midst. For Valentine’s Day to be effective it doesn’t even take the exchange of traditional items. All it takes is a kind, loving heart keeping the day special. And, if you want the celebration to continue, keep the same spirit and heart from the day and preserve it throughout the year. Happy Valentine’s to you all. St. Paul Lutheran Church 111 W. Five LHPD officers receive promotions By Lou Ponsi Behind the Badge OC

The promotions of five members of the La Habra Police Department were recently celebrated during a badge-pinning ceremony attended by family members, fellow officers and police personnel from several agencies. One by one, with Police Chief Jerry Price announcing the achievements of each, the honorees took the stage at the La Habra Community Center, accompanied by their families. Children and proud spouses pinned the badges, engraved with the new rank, on the uniforms of the honorees. Receiving promotions were Cpl. Shawn Miller, Sgt. Eric Ocampo, Lt. Clint Angle, Lt. Adam Foster and Capt. Dean Capelletti. Capt. Dean Capelletti A police officer since 2002, Capelletti has excelled in virtually every unit where he has been assigned. He was transferred to the General Investigations Bureau in 2006, where, as an investigator, he handled auto thefts, sex crimes, child abuse and homicide cold cases. During that assignment, Capelletti also was part of the Juvenile Sex Offender Management Team of Orange County. In that role, he developed methods that help investigate sex crimes cases involving juvenile suspects. He is a certified composite artist and his composite drawings have been instrumental in helping solve multiple cases. Capelletti was promoted to sergeant in 2010 and assigned to the Professional Standards Unit the following year. He remained in that assignment until his promotion to lieutenant in 2013, when he was reassigned to patrol. Two years later, he returned to the Investigations Bureau, this time as the bureau com-

mander. Over the course of his career, he has had the opportunity to coordinate the department’s security for community events, such as the Corn Festival, has participated in numerous honor guard events, and served as a presenter for the department’s English and Spanish language Citizens’ Academies. During his time with La Habra, he has served as an explorer advisor, field training officer, arrest and control tactics instructor, North County SWAT team leader and team commander. Lt. Adam Foster Foster came to the LHPD from another agency in 2009. As a lateral officer with seven years of law enforcement experience, he was a welcome addition to the department. In fact, within a year of joining the agency, Foster became a member of the North County SWAT team and a field training officer, spending two years in patrol training new officers. While on SWAT, Foster planned and served a multi-location arrest warrant for two suspects wanted in connection with a double homicide. He was transferred to the General Investigations Unit in 2012 as a detective working fraud and forgery cases. Foster was promoted to sergeant that same year. As a sergeant, Foster served as a SWAT supervisor for North County SWAT. He also was transferred to the Professional Standards Unit where he was responsible for the department’s recruitment efforts, personnel training, and internal affairs investigations. Lt. Clint Angle Angle began his law enforcement career as a police cadet with LHPD in 1993 and was hired as a police officer a year later. Angle also has served on North

currently is an active member of the North County SWAT, serving as a team supervisor. He has received commendations from his supervisors, three chief ’s citations and a Distinguished Service Medal.

Sgt. Eric Ocampo Ocampo joined the LHPD in 2007. After working in patrol, he was appointed as one of the department’s field training officers. Ocampo played a role in locating an occupied vehicle involved in a robbery, resulting in the arrest of the suspects. He transferred to General Investigations in 2012, serving as investigator of sexual assault and child abuse cases. Ocampo has served as a member of the range staff, a Taser instructor, a presenter for the Citizens’ Academy, a member of the honor guard, and as a regular participant in the Law Enforcement Special Olympics Torch Run. He

Cpl. Shawn Miller A police officer since 2007, Miller has consistently exceeded the average for self-initiated calls during a shift, Price said. He has served as a member of the department’s range staff, as a field training officer and as a volunteer during K9 demonstrations. Miller was selected to serve as a narcotics detective in the Special Investigations Unit in 2012. In 2015, Miller became part of the Public and Commercial Narcotic Enforcement Team, (PACNET), or as it is currently known, the Orange County Financial Investigations Task Force.

LHPD joins with sergeant’s wife urging cancer awareness By Greg Hardesty Behind The Badge OC

Loretta Baylos radiates health and vigor. The wife of veteran La Habra PD Sgt. Jeff Baylos is healthy, having been cancer free for 2 ½ years. But daily, Loretta still weathers lower back and stomach pain from a radical hysterectomy she underwent in August 2014 after being diagnosed with an early-stage (1b1) but aggressive form of cervical cancer — the second leading cause of cancer in women, after breast cancer. Baylos hopes other women don’t have to experience what she went through. And she prays that fewer women will die from a disease in which early detection is critical. “We’re losing women in silence… it’s an epidemic,” Baylos said. “They are crying out and dying in agony, and very few people are listening. Some of these girls when they get diagnosed with cervical cancer die very soon afterwards.” Baylos and her husband purchased teal ribbon magnets two years ago and La Habra PD Chief Jerry Price allowed them to be displayed on the agency’s entire fleet of police vehicles during January, national Cervical Health Awareness Month. Two years later, the La Habra Police Department continues to support awareness with the teal ribbons on each patrol unit and Loretta Baylos remains a tireless advocate for cervical cancer awareness. Although the second leading cause of cancer in women, cervical cancer still is widely regarded as an afterthought.

It usually is caused by HPV viruses. Baylos continues to urge women to educate themselves about HPV-related cervical cancer and to get vaccinated against HPV, as well as to undergo regular screenings for the virus. HPV is transmitted through sexual contact and, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is the most common sexually transmitted infection. More than 10,000 women in the United States are diagnosed with HPV-related cervical cancer each year, but the disease is virtually always preventable with vaccination and appropriate screening (Pap and HPV tests), the CDC says. More than 4,120 women die in the U.S. from cervical cancer, according to cancer.net. When detected at an early stage, the five-year survival rate for women with invasive cervical cancer is 92 percent. Once again, throughout January, the LHPD had outfitted its vehicles with the teal-and-white ribbon magnets. “This is a good cause,” Price said. “The issue really hit home for us because it touched one of our own. The teal ribbon magnets are a great way for us to raise awareness, and the campaign has been really well received by the public. I think if the ribbons motivate someone to get screened or help others to recognize the prevalence of this cancer, we have accomplished something.” That’s where Loretta and her husband, a watch commander and field sergeant with 30 years in at the LHPD, come in. In addition to the police vehicle

magnets and teal-and-white wristbands she hands out, Loretta speaks about her experience with HPV-related cervical cancer to such groups as the American Cancer Society. She and her husband, who between them have six children ranging in age from 13 to 32, agree the issue needs to be brought further to the forefront. “We’re at the point now where we need to talk about this more,” Jeff Baylos said. “We’re trying to get other PDs on board with this.” Loretta gets a checkup every three months to make sure her cancer has not returned. She stresses the importance for

women to get annual Pap and HPV tests to make sure they don’t get cervical cancer — or that they catch it in the early stages. Some of the surgeries women have to endure when they have a reoccurrence from cervical cancer are very invasive and harrowing. “I don’t want any woman to have to go through that,” Baylos said. She may be cancer free now, but Baylos lives with anxiety daily. “That fear never goes away,” she said. For more information, visit TealLadiesMoveMountains.com

There are a lot of ways to cover your butt.

But a colonoscopy is by far the best. Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths. In fact, one in 20 people will get colon cancer. And it often starts with zero symptoms. A colonoscopy is the only colon screening that can actually prevent it. All others can only detect it once it’s already present. So if you are 50 or over, do not leave yourself hanging out to dry. Prevent colon cancer and schedule a colonoscopy today.

LH rallies to combat cancer with annual Relay For Life

By Jay Seidel La Habra Journal

La Habra kicked off the fundraising for the annual Relay For Life Event last week at the La Habra Community Center. The kickoff event helped raise awareness about the fight against various forms of cancer. "This year we are creating a welcoming experience of support, celebrating with sur vivors and

remembering those we lost," said Mark Sturdevant, Relay Experience co-chair. Local survivors were on hand to tell their stories. "We will praise the work of caregivers that unselfishly serve their loved ones and bring hope to others," Sturdevant added. Loretta Baylos, wife of veteran La Habra PD Sgt. Jeff Baylos, shared her battle with cervical cancer. Baylos is 2 1/2 years cancer free and has become an advocate for examination and prevention for women. Other LHPD wives stood up with Baylos as she shared her story. Relay For Life is a grass roots, community-based team event. According to organizers, every Relay has different components. "Our theme, Blast Cancer Out of this World, serves as a reminder of our strength to fight back against this terrible disease," Sturdevant said. "We encourage others to join the fight."

Moros Cuban Restaurant moving to bigger location By Leonardo Romero La Habra Journal

On December 15, 2010 Sean Saafan opened the door to Moros Cuban restaurant and declared it open for business. After six years of running his first restaurant in a location that can hold 12 tables and 42 people, Saafan is ready to move his business into a more spacious building. He’ll be moving his restaurant to 1299 S. Harbor Blvd., which was formerly occupied by Mrs. Bea’s Louisiana Chicken and Waffles. An official moving date hasn’t been scheduled yet, but Saafan is aiming to open by the first week of April. “I think we’ve come a long way,” said Saafan. “We were voted number one Cuban restaurant in Orange County four years in a row by the OC Register.” The restaurant also has a four and a half stars review from close to one thousand reviews on the website yelp. com. As the restaurant became more successful, the restaurant’s team began facing busy weekend nights where

they would have to explain to customers that there is a two-hour wait for the next available table. Saafan didn’t like that people would have to leave due to the long wait, so he decided to search for a larger location. The new location is triple the size of the current location and will feature a stage where a live band will perform. The new location is also scheduled to open with a new menu containing new entrees and desserts that are currently being finalized, according to one of the restaurant’s chefs, David Adan. The current location doesn’t sell any alcoholic drinks, but the new location will be serving beer and wine. “We cook traditional Cuban dishes here, but we add more flavor by adding different spices and meats,” said Adan. “If you’d like to try something new then you should come try our flavorful dishes.” On Sundays Moros features an all you can eat buffet from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at $16 per person and $8 for children ages 3 to 7. With more room to improve the buffet at their new location, Saafan plans on adding a meat carving station, omelet station, ceviche station, and a dessert station. Within the current location the walls feature painted silhouettes of buildings and the moon on one side and silhouettes of people dancing and a man playing the saxophone on the other side. Next to the man playing the saxophone is written Maadi, Cairo, Egypt in black paint. That was the town Saafan was born and raised in until he moved to New York at the age of 19 to study at the French Culinary Institute of New York. “Egypt is a third world country where if you’re born poor you die poor,” said Saafan. “If you’re born

rich you die rich. For me to make a difference in my life I had to get out.” After graduating among the top in his class from the culinary institute he moved to and worked in Las Vegas. He eventually moved to California in 2004 and worked at a Cuban restaurant in Pomona named Coco Palm Restaurant. He has the name of his hometown painted on his restaurant’s wall, because he never wants to forget his roots as he moves forward in his successful culinary career. Moros’ front of the house manager, Tyler Thomas, has been working at the restaurant for over four years, and has had several instances where he was unable to reserve a company’s Christmas party due to their location’s restricting capacity. “We were very limited with only twelve tables here,” said Thomas. “Now that we have the right place and the right staff it looks like everything is working out right.”

Until Moros Cuban Restaurant moves it will remain open at its current address located at 380 N. Harbor Blvd. in La Habra. For more information on the restaurant and an online menu visit their official website at moroscubanrestaurant.com.

12 Emma Zener: Lady Highlanders' Sharpshooter Breaks 1,000 By Jason Burch La Habra Jouirnal

Lady Highlander senior Emma Zener had a day to remember. Just a few hours after she was named La Habra’s class of 2017 co-valedictorian, Zener surpassed a milestone never before reached in school history on Tuesday night. With her 10 points against Sunny Hills last week, Zener eclipsed 1,000 for her career and helped lift the Lady Highlanders over the Lancers. Zener came into the game seven points shy of 1000 for her career. So her average of 11 points per game seemed to make eclipsing the milestone mostly a formality. However, the standout sharpshooter opened the first quarter ice cold. With friends and family filling up the La Habra gym, and the PA announcer reminding everyone in attendance of the looming milestone several times, Zener began the night uncharacteristically off from behind the arc, missing her first six shots. “Going into the game I was a little more nervous than usual because I knew that I had family coming out and people were expecting me to hit seven more points,” Zener said. “Normally I wouldn’t see seven as that many points, but suddenly reaching that milestone was like trying to get over the hump.” As the game progressed, she turned

to her defense to create some easy offense and get to the basket, which is something she and her head coach Dana Khandelwal have been working on all year. “By this point with four years on varsity teams know she’s going to shoot, so this year we have encouraged her and really worked with her on attacking the basket,” Khandelwal said. Midway through the second quarter Zener grabbed a rebound and took it the length of the court for a layup. And one minute later she came up with a steal and another transition bucket at the rim. Khandelwal said Zener was already a prolific three-point shooter the past three seasons, but what has set her apart this season, has been her ability to drive to the basket. That setup center Hannah McArthur to find Zener open behind the arc, and she fittingly knocked down a three to reach the rare milestone with 1:47 remaining in the first half. “At first when my shots weren’t falling I started to get a little nervous, but then once I hit those layups, I was really happy to hit my 1000th point on a three.” Zener said. After trailing the Lancers by a basket through the first quarter, Zener’s seven points in the second helped give the Lady Highlanders a 27-17 lead at the half, and they they never looked back. La Habra would go on to beat

For the record books: La Habra Senior Emma Zener reached the 1,000 career point mark as she helped leat the Lady Highalanders basketball team to a 52-36 win over the Sunny Hills Lancers at home.

Sunny Hills 52-36, with Zener adding another three in the third quarter to cement this game and her forever in the record books. “We talked about this game last night and how we wanted to get to the third spot for the playoffs,” Khandelwal said. “We actually didn’t put too much pressure on the seven points because she’s averaging 11 [per game] now anyway, so we knew she was going to get it.” Zener plans to continue playing basketball at the next level. The newly honored valedictorian will attend Smith College in Massachusetts, where she will play basketball and pursue a liberal arts degree. “I wanted to go to a college where I can be a student first because I’ve always loved learning more than bas-

ketball,” she said. “I realized at a D3 I can do that, basketball is just a part of who you are, it’s not your whole identity and I love the idea of an all women’s college.” Zener said that she realized at the beginning of her freshman year if she wanted to maintain success in both the classroom and on the court, that she would have to create a regiment for herself. “I would say it was a lot of self discipline, with telling myself I want to be the best in school and in basketball,” Zener said. “I don’t want to be just a student or just a basketball player, but a student-athlete who excels in both.” At 1003 and counting, Zener and the Lady Highlanders will look to finish strong in the Freeway League.

Lady Highlanders double up Coyotes By Jason Burch La Habra Journal

Center Hannah McArthur returned from a one game absence to lead the Lady Highlanders past Buena Park 65-32 on Senior Night at La Habra on Friday. After rolling her ankle against Troy a week ago, McArthur sat out Wednesday night’s game against Sonora. Afterwards La Habra coach Dana Khandelwal said they were really hoping she would be able to take the court for Senior Night, but didn’t want to rush her back. Other than a feeling it out process early on, McArthur certainly didn’t show any ill effects. Buena Park was able to keep it close early, trailing La Habra 10-8 at the end of the first quarter, with McArthur failing to register a shot. McArthur broke through in the second quarter though. Her 8 points in the second gave La Habra a 32-18 lead at the half. She added 6 more in the third and the Lady Highlanders pulled away for good. McArthur wound up leading all players with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Emma Zener matched her season scoring average with 11 points, including three from downtown. “My two teammates Lani and Larisa Maehara pushed me to what I am today, so I have to thank them,” McArthur said, fighting back emotions. “Without them I wouldn’t be where I am.”

“And also all of the coaches and trainers, and of course my parents, they challenged me to get 1000 rebounds and I’m about 140 away,” she added. The Lady Coyotes only suited up six girls for the game, giving them just one bench player most of the night. Buena Park inevitably got into foul trouble late in the game because the girls had to stay on the court the entire way. Two Lady Coyotes fouled out in the fourth, so La Habra played the final 5:17 with a five-on-four power play advantage. Despite being outnumbered, Buena Park hustled and fought for every rebound and loose ball until the final whistle. Khandelwal praised Buena Park’s effort and said she knew that they would have to match their intensity to be successful. La Habra's final Freeway League game, and perhaps most critical will be at Sunny Hills (14-10, 3-5) Thursday night. “This team has gone beyond what I thought, so I think we are going to do something great this year,” McArthur said.

Marlow's late three in OT seals Raider win By Frank Lara Resca La Habra Journal

FULLERTON—A late overtime three-pointer by senior Guard Kevin Marlow propelled Sonora to a 61-59 victory over Sunny Hills. Marlow made an impact in the closely contested battle early and often. The senior guard scored the Raiders first six points of the game and 11 of the Raiders 15 points in the first quarter. Sunny Hills was led in the first quarter by senior guard Ryan Shaw, who helped keep the Lancers close in the opening quarter by scoring 6 of their first 11 points. Throughout most of the second quarter both teams matched each others’ makes and misses from the field, but for a few moments the Lancers disrupted the pattern. The Lancers (16-10, 5-3), through baskets by seniors John Paek and Jacob Dibble, outscored the Raiders 7-0 in a two-minute stretch in the quarter and briefly took a one point lead. With Sonora behind, Marlow stepped up once again and scored five straight points, including a 3-pointer, in the final two minutes of the half to retake the lead for the Raiders and put them up by four. As the second quarter drew to a close the Raiders sustained their lead and they went into the half leading 32-28. The game became even closer in the third quarter. The Raiders (23-3, 7-1), who only managed seven points as a team in the third, had trouble converting

from the field due to Marlow only managing two points and the rest of the team missing more than a few shots from beyond the arc and in the paint. Sunny Hills capitalized on the Raiders shooting struggles and went on a 5-0 run to end the quarter only down by one. At the start of the fourth quarter Sunny Hills continued their run and went up 41-39 after forward Luke Hosozawa completed a three-point play from the free throw line. The Raiders responded by going on a 7-0 run of their own to go up by five early in the fourth quarter. Sonora could not pull away from the Lancers and with a minute and a half remaining a 3-pointer by senior guard Sam Barrera tied the game up 51-51. Moments later, Barrera was in position to put the Lancers ahead when a foul sent him to the free throw line with under a minute remaining. However, the senior failed to convert the front end of a one-and-one and the game remained tied. In the final minute each team missed a go ahead basket in the paint and Sonora regained possession after a miss by Dibble. As the clock neared triple zeros Marlow, who had six points in the fourth quarter, had the ball in his hands. The senior sent up a 3-pointer as time expired but it fell short and without a team on top the game went into overtime. With overtime nearing its end and Sunny Hills up by one, Barrera found

himself at the free-throw line once again. This time he converted from the line but missed the second, which meant the Lancers only led by two instead of three. On the very next play Raiders senior center Austin Carter hit a two-pointer to tie the game 58-58. The Lancers responded by making a drive to the basket through Barrera. The senior was fouled on the way into the paint and went to the line yet again. As in his previous attempt, Barrera only converted one of two shots from the line. “You got to make free throws, those are fundamental things of the game,” said Sunny Hills Head Coach Joe Ok, who noted that the team missed nine

free throws on the night. With time running out, once again Marlow had the ball in his hands again. Marlow rapidly made his way up the court and drained a 3-pointer to put Sonora ahead 61-59 with only 2.7 seconds remaining to seal the win. With the close victory, their third in overtime in league play, the Raiders are guaranteed at least a share of the Freeway League title. “This group has been the most resilient group I’ve ever coached,” said Sonora Head Coach Mike Murphy on the overtime win, and added that “we just kinda find a way.” “I just played my heart out, I just did everything I could and thankfully it was enough” said an overjoyed Marlow, who ended up with a game leading 31 points on the night.
