Cutting the ribbon: Miguel Gonzalez Reynoso, co-president of Northgate Markets, cuts the ribbon opening the new store in La Habra while surrounded by family and council members from La Habra and La Habra Heights.

The long awaited opening of the new, larger Northgate market at its new location on Whittier Boulevard happened last week. Hundreds of anxious shoppers lined up around the building for the opening.

State of the community stresses education By Jay Seidel La Habra Journal

More than 100 people sat around the new City Hall Building to hear the annual State of the Community address given by the mayor. This year's address, hosted by the La Habra Area Chamber of Commerce, was focused on education and its importance in the community. Phil Pacia, Career Technical Education instructor at Sonora High School shared the importance of vocational and CTE courses in curriculum. He noted the number of programs at both Sonora and La Habra High Schools that not only educate but also train students in technical and applied fields that are needed today. According to Pacia, the CTE programs help prepare students learn and develop skills in areas such as

machining, automotive, digital arts, medical and of course farming and agriculture. La Habra City School District Superintendent Joanne Culverhouse shared that exciting things are in store for the district. There was even a class at Imperial Middle School watching and interacting through a live stream. LHHS Principal Karl Z ener brought students from the MBA business program to share their stories about working with local business owners as mentors and what they learned. La Habra Mayor Rose Espinoza echoed how important education is in the community, and what a big role it plays. She said she is looking forward to working with the various school districts on what they can do together as the city and community progress.

The maximum fine for setting off fireworks within the La Habra city limits has increased to $1,000 and residents of homes where fireworks are fired off will be fined as well after a split vote by the LH City Council Monday night. The fines were originally capped at $500 since the city banned the private use of fireworks. The amended municipal code now doubles that fine. According to La Habra Police Captain George Johnstone, who spoke on behalf of Chief Jerry Price, the LHPD receives a high volume of complaints regarding the illegal use of fireworks during the week preceding the Fourth of July holiday. Johnstone explained that during the Fourth of July week in 2016, patrol officers and specially assigned enforcement details responded to 212 calls for service and were only able to issue 17 citations for fireworks violations. The department spent $2,309.31 in overtime costs and reassigned officers on regular duty to be available to respond to fireworks related calls for service. Councilman Tom Beamish, who voted for the increase said that the ordinance needed to be enforced and that increasing the fine could help act as a deterrent. The new ordinance allows enforcement action against persons acting as “social hosts” where fireworks are being discharged, whether or not those persons are observed possessing or using fireworks. It further allows a police officer to take enforcement action against the property owners or tenants of a property where illegal fireworks are being stored or used. This is similar to the law regarding alcohol consumption. See FIREWORKS Page 2

Councilman Michael Blazey who also supported the increased penalty, said he was happy to see the social host element added and that it will help with enforcement measures and help keep property safe in La Habra and La Habra Heights. Johnstone said that the city staff will create a public awareness campaign related to the risks associated with the use of fireworks and explain the laws surrounding the possession and use of fireworks in La Habra. Mayor Pro Tem Tim Shaw, the lone vote against the increase, said that he felt that the fines were too severe and that council should revisit the city’s ban of safe and sane fireworks in the near future.

OPINION Did you know... By Nicole Panza La Habra Historical Museum

The California Domestic Water Company and the La Habra Water Company were incorporated in 1902 and played a crucial role in bringing water to farmers in the La Habra Valley. Their offices were located in Los Angeles until 1907 when they were relocated to 133 South Greenleaf Avenue, Whittier California. A new office was built in 1934 at 15505 Whittier Blvd, Whittier. In the 1950s, many of the ranches in La Habra were divided into suburban housing tracts, and developers switched their water service from California Domestic Water to municipal water sources. However, this was not the first time in La Habra’s history that rapid expansion to the La Habra town site caused its residents to seek new sources of domestic water. In 1913, La Habra was attracting oil and citrus workers and more water was desperately needed to supply their homes. The La Habra Domestic Water Company was formed as a mutual water company and shares were purchased from the La Habra Water Company to pipe water to the

COMMENTARY

La Habra Community. During the boom of the 1920s the La Habra Domestic Water Company constructed more main lines, added service to La Habra’s additions and purchased a reservoir site north of Whittier Blvd. between Cypress and Fullerton Road. In 1928, voters turned down a proposition for the city to purchase the company, but in 1933 the La Habra Domestic Water Company was acquired by the city in a $100,000 bond issue. Another $100,000 bond issue was passed in 1947 to improve La Habra’s water system. However, by the 1950s a boom in suburban activity meant that the city had to start seeking additional water supplies including water from the Colorado River. La Habra also joined the Metropolitan Water system, and in 1954 La Habra and Brea shared the expense to bring a twenty inch Metropolitan water line to their cities. Just another interesting piece of history about where we live, work, and enjoy being a part of the La Habra community. New development sparks new potential If you’ve driven around La Habra, you’ve seen a lot of development going on. One of the highlights has been the new Northgate Market shopping center. Yes, we lost Tommy’s, but look at what the city has gained. What was once considered a blight that included empty storefronts and a dated look, is now a brand-new supermarket and updated shopping area. This is great for the community. New buildings and updated construction often spark more upgrades in the neighborhoods. Just think of your home, if your neighbor fixes up his or her house so that it looks nice, you feel compelled to look at maybe adding a new coat of paint or sprucing up your landscaping. This is what could happen along Whittier Boulevard. Instead of empty deteriorating buildings, there are now active retailers. Across Hacienda, the property that used to be home to the Big Deal Car Wash is developing as well. While Northgate remodeled a standing structure, there will be all new buildings on this property. The news that one of the new tenants will be La Habra’s second In n Out has already

3

been released and welcomed. The Starbucks, currently on the south side of Whittier, will move over to the north side and be a drive through. This is just the first of what is to come in regards to that property. On the other side of town, the new Harbor Freight that is moving into the old Pick and Save on Harbor and La Habra Boulevards, along with a new Chevron Gas Station will most likely help spur development along the Harbor corridor. The key will be the old Burch Ford property and when Fullerton finally approves development on the old Beckman property near Lambert. The City Hall development is looking to spark development in the downtown. So while developments continue across the city, and create new retail and living space, let's watch and hope that commercial property owners take this time to fix, clean and spruce up their properties. It's time to keep this momentum going and keep reinvigorating the city. —The Editor

INSPIRATIONAL CORNER

5

By Dennis Laherty, the Co-Pastor of Emanuel Lutheran Church, La Habra

It’s spring, which for Christians means the season of Resurrection and new life. A question for everyone is this; how does your God/god make you new? This question is certainly based on a presupposition. We all have a God/god. We might speak of Almighty God, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Or we can speak of some other god, one that is in control of our life. Really, anything can become a god for a person. Virtually every addictive substance fills the requirement. Even addictive actions like hoarding, shopping, gambling or alcohol. Anything can become a god. Hopefully now, for the sake of discussion, as many people feel included as possible. If you’re an atheist and the Lord God Almighty is not your God then you can identify that which is in the same place in your life. That “thing” or being to which you give over control in your life qualifies as your God/god. So again I ask, how does your God/god make you new? As I’ve mentioned, springtime is a natural time to speak of growth or growing. We can see growth in nature but it’s also a great time to identify growth in our lives as well. Depending on the God/god you follow, the outcome can be quite different. If your God/god is a loving, nurturing, forgiving God/god, your growth has every opportunity to be positive and good. If your God/god doesn’t possess a positive attribute, you may still experience growth in your life, but your growth may be a negative experience with no end to the negative new life. As you have undoubtedly noticed, I have used God/god to refer to that being or thing that is in charge of our lives. If the change agent in your life is a god, hopefully this spring will be a time to seriously consider God, the Almighty One. In the end it’s certainly up to you. I do hope that this season of growth and new life will be an exceptionally positive one for all who follow the One who is loving, nurturing and forgiving.

Rotary recognizes top local athletes By Jane Williams La Habra Journal

On the third Thursday of March Rotary members met the outstanding athletes of the local schools’ winter sports teams. To no one’s surprise Sonora Students of the Month were both basketball players. Meghann Henderson has been the Raider's starting point guard for all four years. She helped lead the Raiders to 83 victories over her four years. Four times she has been named to the First Team All-Freeway League, three times a First Team All-CIF member, and most recently she was chosen to represent the North in the OC All Star game. She helped the Lady Raiders reach the CIF finals for the first time her junior year. She holds the record for most steals in both a game and season. Next year she will be playing for Cal State Northridge on a Division 1 scholarship. Kevin Marlowe was one of the big reasons the Raiders won the Freeway League title for the fifth year in a row. The Raiders went 25-4 this past year. Kevin was named to the Third Team All-Orange County. At the same time he has taken a full load of AP honors courses and maintained over a 4.0 gpa. He has been named the Sonora Scholar Athlete three years in a row. He went straight to junior varsity as a freshman and became a varsity starter as a sophomore. He was named defensive player of the year for the team that won Sonora’s first CIF Title in 31 years. As a junior he was named to the First Team All League. At Whittier Christian, Amy Baray is a three sport athlete running cross country, track and soccer. She was a CIF qualifier in all three sports, and was named MVP of the Olympic League in track and cross country

and to the Second Team All League in soccer. She has trained kids in soccer, refereed kids’ soccer games for her church’s teams, served as athletic representative on ASB, and is a member of the National Honor Society. She is the captain of her running team and president of the senior class. She also has made a mission trip to Costa Rica. Earlier this year she was elected Homecoming Queen and in the Miss La Habra Pageant. Next year she will play soccer for Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan and plans to major in nursing. Ben White, Whittier Christian’s top cross country athlete, became the first Herald to make it to the state finals. A determined young man, he trained over 2,000 miles in the past year to be ready for his last high school team. Needless to say he made the First All Area team. In addition to the awards he has collected for track and cross country, he also has earned Academic Decathlon Medals. His special area for the decathlon team is economics. Ben regularly helps fourth graders with their studies and homework and regularly assists the Heights Christian School’s track and running team. He is waiting to hear from UCLA, UC Riverside, and Whittier College. Samiah Washington was La Habra High’s top female athlete. Captain of the girls’ soccer team, she was named to the First All League team as a sophomore and junior, and the Second All League Team this past season. A Heritage scholar, she boasts a 4.12 gpa, is the senior class Vice President, as well as a member of the National Honor Society and Key Club. She also participates in a program to feed the homeless which creates boxes of food and hands them out to those in need. She plans to attend Brigham Young University in Hawaii, to major in sociolo-

Brandon Murray is skilled at solving problems in calculus, physics, and finding the explanation that unlocks the mystery of math for the students he tutors. His 4.41 gpa and his position in the Top 100 earned him acceptance at UC Davis and he hopes it will do the same at UC Irvine. At either school he plans to major in biological science with medical

He is here because he has been particularly good at determining how to defeat the other 145 pound wrestler on the mat with him. Brandon is captain of the wrestling team. This year he placed second in the CIF Tournament and qualified for the Master’s Meet where he placed third, just missing the State tournament.

Northgate brings crowds with opening of new store

By Génesis Miranda La Habra Journal

Northgate Gonzalez markets have just added their newest and one of their biggest supermarkets in the city of La Habra. This new store, which opened on Wednesday March 29, has replaced the original Northgate market that had stood on La Habra Boulevard for years. But this new store is bigger and better in many ways. It includes a huge produce and meat section, a bakery, and a section for hot food ready to go. The lines at each register stretched all the way around the market where people crowded to see what was new at the market. A mariachi band played in the produce section as customers gathered around to take photos. Although Northgate Gonzalez is usually targeted to the Latino community with the kinds of products they carry, it also attracts people of all ethnicities and backgrounds. “It’s gonna be a good melting pot, traditionally Northgate is maybe looked upon as a Hispanic grocery store. This type of grocery store is a fresh format, and we’re hoping to attract all demographics” said Martin Chavoya, district manager of Northgate Gonzalez. There was as big of a crowd inside as there was outside, with a long line of people anxiously waiting to get in. As part of the grand opening, the first 300 customers received a shopping bag including $30 worth of groceries. One of the main expectations of this new Northgate market is “to provide a place where our community can come and get something fresh, some really good quality and some really good customer service,” Chavoya said. Benito Diaz, an employee of Northgate market says he hopes to see the store continue to grow. “Here we have things for different people, for Latinos, Americans, for everyone.” Everything from the products, services and overall size of the market really sets it apart from other local Northgate Gonzalez markets. “I think this is the best store, until now, that Northgate has opened,” Diaz said. Miguel Gonzalez Reynoso, co-president of the Northgate Gonzalez Markets was present at the

grand opening along with a few other members of the Gonzalez family. “For me personally, since I worked as director of the market for 20 years here in La Habra, it was like we owed something to the community,” Reynoso said. Reynoso is one of the 13 members of the Gonzalez family. “We needed to give the community a market they deserved. I felt that the old store was not up to par with what we could give to the community,” Reynoso said. With the opening of this new store, about 140 people were given jobs. Many of them were high school kids who, according to Reynoso, want a part time job.

The market’s bakery makes everything from scratch, as well as in the tortilleria. They also carry more healthy options, Reynoso explained, such as organic and grass-fed items. Something else the market added were financial services where customers can go to send money to their home countries. The majority of the customers present have been customers of the original store for many years, Reynoso said. “That makes me happy because part of making these markets is how to bring the second and third generation,” Reynoso said. Northgate Gonzalez Market is located at 1305 W. Whittier Blvd, La Habra and is open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day.

Raiders unable to repeat as tourney champs By Jay Seidel La Habra Journal

Despite picking up three wins, an opening loss against Colorado's Valor Christian High School was all it took to knock the Raiders out of championship contention in the Anaheim Lions Tournament. A seven-run fith inning put the Raiders in a hole they were unable to come back from. Valor Christian took the opening game 10-1 against the Raiders March 25. Jacob Baltierrez scored the only run for the Raiders off a Luis Chavarin hit in the second. Sonora went on a run after the loss, beating Columbia High School of Idaho 8-2 and Utah's Taylorsville High School 16-3.

Willie Castellanos, Wilem Drozdowski and Andrew Maguire had two RBI a piece. Josiah Austin picked up the win from the mound giving up two hits and striking out five. The Raiders lost again in the tourney, but this time battled into extra innings. Sonora came up short 7-6 against McQueen High School from Nevada. The Raiders finished the tournament with a 4-1 win over La Canada. Drozdowski had a home run and Isaac Ramirez had two RBI for Sonora. Dylan Villalobos picked up his second win of the season not giving up a hit and striking out four in three innings. The Raiders are at Fullerton Friday.
