LH looks to annex county islands By Jay Seidel La Habra Journal

neighborhood of the city. Saturday's neighborhood was south of La Habra Boulevard to Third Avenue between Euclid and Washington Middle School. Projects consisted of house painting, clearing out dead brush and leaves, planting trees, landscaping, small maintenance projects, a mural project and letter writing to local active-duty military. Chaired by Kurt Fuller and La Habra Police Chief Jerry Price, Love La Habra has already helped out nearly 100 residential lots as well as public and some commercial properties. "The block party was a wonderful event," Fuller said. "Working with the city and police force we set out to revitalize a neighborhood in need. Several local schools, businesses and churches all worked together to paint, landscape, clean and build." Fuller and organizers worked with the City of La Habra in order to find the projects needed. Residents who were having trouble with code violations or who were having trouble with upkeep were made a priority for Love La Habra projects.

The La Habra City Council voted to delay a decision on annexing six county islands that fall within the city boundaries. The vote came Monday at a three-hour long meeting that had to accommodate overflow seating. Council members agreed that more information was needed before transferring the 416 homes from Orange County to La Habra. According to Carlos Jaramillo, Deputy Director of Community Development, there have been 108 annexations of county islands in La Habra since 1970. Home owners who live in the six remaining county islands filled the council chambers, addressing their concerns about the possible change, and asking questions from a wide range of potential impacts including: home assessments, sewage, sidewalks and address changes. Councilman Tom Beamish said he was concerned about the financial impact and wanted to make sure all questions of the residents were addressed. “It’s important for everyone to know the actual cost before the city moves forward,” he said. Councilman Mike Blazey agreed. “We want people to become willing residents of La Habra and not be dragged kicking and screaming.” The idea of annexing the county properties originally came about in 2013 when the La Habra Utility Authority worked with California Domestic Water Company to improve water pressure and flow for public safety. They were looking to provide better water service reliability to approximately 1,267 retail water accounts in the northern portion of the city that were served either by the city or CDWC.

The Gary Center was founded in 1971 by the Stafford family after their 19 year old son Gary died as a result of drug use. The Stafford family wanted to provide counseling and education so that others would not lose their lives to drugs. The Gary Center’s goal is to provide quality, affordable and compassionate community-based services, to children, families and individuals in order to foster a healthier and happier community for all. Early directors of the Gary Center include Mike Clements, Jim Yacenda, Ed Navarro and Sally Urenda. Over the years the Gary Center has undergone multiple changes to their facilities in order to expand their services offered to the community. In 1971, the Gary Center moved into a city owned residential building adjacent to Guadalupe Park and the old Our Lady of Guadalupe church and in 1980 the Gary Center gained city approval to use the building adjacent to 341 Hillcrest St. for their long awaited medical clinic. In 2000, the Gary Center building went through a major expansion program that moved the dental clinic, which had been operating from the basement since the 1980s, to the adjacent

building the center purchased, and expanded their current building to include more office space and counseling rooms. Most recently the Gary Center’s partnership with Vista Community Clinics has allowed the Gary center to expand its services into its new building located at 201 Harbor Blvd. This new center offers health services in adult and family medicine, women’s health, pediatrics, optometry, and reproductive health as well as dental and behavioral health services. The Hillcrest facility continues to operate their food pantry and offer classes on a variety of topics like parenting, healthy living and nutrition as well as ESL classes. Just another interesting piece of history about where we live, work, and enjoy being a part of the La Habra community. There really is a little something to the motto La Habra's motto is "A Caring community. " This last week showed a great deal of compassion within the community. A couple hundred volunteers came out to help residents who needed some help with their properties and homes. Last week also saw a horrific tragedy that left one teen in our community dead and another going to jail and families and friends devastated. However, while in darkness, the community looked to help through a gofundme account and an outpouring at the impromptu memorial set up in the parking lot. Despite the differences we may have, they seem small when we La Habrans are asked to pull together for each other. This is something that I have always liked about this community. People pull together when needed. We can complain about potholes, voice our concerns about developments, even get mad about overnight parking violations and ordinances. But, when we can take care of our own, we tend to do so. I have seen examples over and over again in La Habra. Maybe it’s the fact that we don’t have a freeway tearing through our city and bringing in a large amount of “outsiders”. Maybe it’s that multiple generations have called and continue to call La Habra home. Maybe it’s that small town feeling where you really do get to know “everyone” in the city. Whatever it is, there is a strong sense of commu-

nity in La Habra and that’s what sets us apart from other cities. Events like Love La Habra help remind us to take care of our neighbors and pull together as a true community, so when tragedies like what happened Friday morning occur, we can again pull together and share our hearts and the goodness we have in us. Our differences make us individuals, but our shared sense of civility make us a community. There are a number of ways to give and share with neighbors. La Habra is full of a variety of nonprofit organizations that are focused on helping those within our boundaries. These nonprofits are always looking for people interested in giving some of their time. There are opportunities for people of all ages. Nonprofits welcome anyone who wants to help. The city's Youth Committee is just about to send out applications for students to volunteer to help in the city. Faith-based organizations and their services in the city also provide opportunity for La Habrans to help their neighbors. I was at a 7-11 in La Habra when a stranger who I opened the door for paid for my coffee. He said "don't worry about it. Just pay it forward." So, thank you La Habra, for showing your heart. Keep it going and keep looking for opportunities to help each other out. It helps make us all better. —The Editor

Community comes out to mourn murdered teen

An outpouring of support came when the news that 19-year-old Selena Marie Araiza was found dead and her boyfriend was arrested and charged with her murder. A memorial was established near the site she was found in the parking lot of the Green Burrito, 911 W. Whittier Blvd. Friends described the La Habra High School graduate as funny and friendly. Someone they could count on and who could always cheer them up. Araiza was a student at Cypress College where she was studying nursing. An account on GoFundMe was set up to help the family with costs of her funeral services. More than $5,000 was raised in a day, but the family is looking for additional help to cover the unexpected costs. The donation site can be found at: www.gofundme.com/Selena-Araiza. Any amount is welcome. Araiza was found dead from stab wounds in a car in a parking lot near the apartments where she lived. Jose Bojorquez, 18, of La Habra was at the scene, holding a knife when La Habra Police officers responded.

Officers used less than lethal force to disarm him. He was taken to a hospital and treated. He will be booked on murder charges. A viewing will be held Sunday, May 7 from 5-9 p.m. at Memory Garden 455 Central Ave. in Brea. Mass will be held at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church on Monday, May 8 at 10 a.m.

SERVICE: Love La Habra lets neighbors help neighbors in the city From Page 1

Fuller, who is the pastor at The Warehouse Church in La Habra, explained that it was a way to help those who needed it. Other faith-based groups in La Habra offered up help in their neighborhoods. One of the churches in the area, Casa de Oracion, had 20 members from the congregation there to help. Samuel Rodriguez, the men's worship pastor, said that the day of service was a great opportunity to reach out and help "our brothers and sisters." His father, pastor Phillipe Rodriguez, helped give a blessing in Span-

ish and English for the volunteers. Volunteers from all of the cities taking part in the service day all got together at Fullerton College where they were treated to a lunch and shared their stories. The next Love La Habra day of service is set for September 23. More information can be found at www. lovelahabra.com or on social media. Fuller explains that Love La Habra is a non-profit that combines the local government, non-profits and faith-based organizations "working together with one goal, love and serve. We encourage residents and friends to work together and demonstrate compassion."

ISLANDS: City council postpone decision to annex county land

From Page 1

The improvement measures required approval from Orange County Local Agency Formation Commission to provide “out of area” service to customers who lived in county islands, as they did not reside within city limits. LAFCO indicated that in order for the Authority to provide water service to those customers, annexation of the affected County islands would be required. According to Rob Ferrier, assistant to the city manager, it has been a long-standing priority of LAFCO and the County of Orange to have small County pockets and islands. In an effort to meet the needs of improving water service, conversations about annexation of the properties began. The city held a meeting in January for the residents who would be impacted by the annexation. The properties include: 295 parcels near Macy and Randall Streets, 56 Parcels near Hensel and Magda Roads, 37 parcels between Citrus and Idaho Streets, 17 parcels on Shadycrest near Palm Street, seven parcels near Cypress and Terry and four parcels near Citrus and Entrada. Some of the questions were addressed like connection to the city’s sewer line when their current septic systems failed or when major adjustments to the property happened. The city was already planning to lay the connectors 200 feet from the property so they can connect when needed. A concern addressed was sidewalks. Many of the properties don’t have sidewalks and can remain without them if they choose. If they want sidewalks, the city would provide them and streetlights if desired. Residents in the newly acquired areas would be required to have permits for overnight parking and comply with city code enforcement.

Beamish commented that the city can and will respond farther than county code personnel for Santa Ana. Trash will be provided by CR&R, which is contracted by the city. Residents in the areas would see about a $5 increase to their bill, which would include street sweeping services. The current five-digit addresses could be changed to be more in line with the city addressing system and the 100-block method. However, public safety officials said that it would not impact their services. La Habra Police Department currently responds to calls until Orange County Sheriffs arrive. Los Angeles County Fire already responds to calls in the county islands. The city stands to gain approximately $45,000 annually in revenue with the inclusion of the islands. The city estimates the cost to repair and fully convert the properties into the city will be approximately $7.3 million. The city will gain approximately $4.2 million from the county and Cal Domestic to help offset some of the costs. While there is a difference of just over $3 million, Ferrier explained that all of the projected work would not commence immediately upon completion of annexation, but rather over time, allowing the city to budget and identify funding for the projects coming later. With the council postponing the decision to a later date, more information and communication to residents in these areas will be allowed to happen. If approved by the council at a future meeting, the application for annexation will need to be approved by the Orange County Board of Supervisors. Then the process of annexation will be completed.

INSPIRATIONAL CORNER

5

By Dennis Laherty, the Co-Pastor of Emanuel Lutheran Church, La Habra

I have come to realize that I really enjoy living in a small town. Several years ago I lived in a small town for the first time. It was a rural farming community in southern Indiana. The experience turned out to be something of a nightmare. Moving there from south Los Angeles, the culture shock was extreme. There is a provincial farm mindset that works to maintain stability for farmers but it doesn’t help the city kid adjust to the new environs very well. So why am I now saying that I really enjoy living in a small town? I live on the line between La Habra and La Habra Heights, that’s why. If you go shopping in this area, you run into people that you know. Driving down one of the main streets you’ll see someone who looks familiar. When there is an accident or even a death in the community it seems to touch the whole community. Certainly a major advantage over a farm community is that there is still privacy for those who want it. But if you want to know what’s happening in the community, in churches or in the schools, there’s more than one way to find out. I attribute this sense of community to the fact that since we live far enough away from freeways, that we tend to patronize local establishments more than we would if we could quickly get on a freeway and drive off. For years, when new families have moved into our area, they have realized that it takes a few minutes to get to a freeway. People have chosen to move here anyway. I can say that it’s a positive to live away from a freeway. That’s one of the reasons we live where we do. Welcome to small town America. Yes, we are surrounded by 12.5 million people, but we live in a small town. The Citrus Festival is coming to La Habra. Walk around the site. Run into people you know and chat awhile. You can use the event to celebrate that we do indeed live in small town America and for that we can be thankful. LOCAL NEWS

Rotary highlights those who overcame By Jane Williams La Habra Journal

April brings one senior to Rotary from each high school in La Habra for whom graduation means that the senior has overcome an obstacle that 99% of the class has never encountered. Some years it involves having to work and contribute his/her earnings to keep the family afloat. Other years it is having taken a wrong path early on in high school and fighting his/her way back to be able to graduate with their original class. For some making it to graduation is a feat they take pride in. For others the challenges to reach that destination are very personal and private. When in many ways your life has been out of your control, some don’t wish to share their personal and private life, no matter how big a triumph her success actually is. Sonora’s Rosa Sandoval is such a person. With a mother and sister as her inspiration, she not only will graduate from Sonora. She has also earned the ROTC Korean Award Association Medal for the second year in a row. Whittier Christian's Rachel Hedman was a confident ninth grader who made an appointment with the principal so she could quiz him on what courses she should take and which activities to pursue. She started out with swimming and cheer, while also pursuing her real passion singing choir. Rachel hopes to attend the University of Washington and major in music and musical theatre. She is currently the Choir Council President after serving as the assistant to the director as a junior. Sometimes when things are going just as you planned, life throws an unexpected obstacle in your way and tears up your plan. During the summer be-

fore her junior year she began to have abdominal pains and by September was diagnosed with an extremely severe case of ulcerative colitis. She went to the Emergency Room and was then sent to Children’s Hospital of Orange County. There she had a total colectomy, removing her entire colon and creating a hole in her abdomen for an ostomy bag to collect her body’s waste. After surgery, which went very well, her wound didn’t heal properly and the ostomy bag gave her a rash. After 39 days she could go home and by January of 2016 she was back in school part time and taking classes online. In August of 2016 she had her final surgery to reconnect her intestine and no longer needed the ostomy bag. She spent the summer of 2016 making up school work. Then in November she had a flare up of Rheumatoid Arthritis which is a side effect of her ulcerative Colitis and very painful which lasted about six weeks. Still she determinedly continues to attend two classes on campus and takes her other courses online, and battles fatigue, pain, and all the emotions that come with them. One triumph she and some of her classmates shared was a trip to four countries in Europe over the spring vacation. And the second will come when she graduates with her class in May. A whole school’s students faculty and parents prayers will have been answered. As a junior, Diego Sanchez was the center of the La Habra High Football Team. At the end of the season he thought he had tweaked his ankle. By March, 2016 his ankle still hurt and he was diagnosed with Lymphoma which began as a tumor in his foot and had spread throughout his body. Diego endured chemotherapy four days a week, unable to walk without a boot and crutches.

Jane Williams/La Habra Journal

Sonora's Rosa Sandoval, La Habra High School's Diego Sanchez and Whittier Christian's Rachel Hedman were honored by the La Habra Rotary Club for their individual triumphs in overcoming adversity.

It was then that his parents, doctors and coaches discovered just how strong this young man was, as he reassured his parents, his 8 year old sister and his coaches he could handle it. #Diego Strong became the hashtag of the year at La Habra High. Fans at football games held posters with the hashtag aloft at games. His doctors knew how important the football team was to him and planned his treatments so he could attend every regular-season game. He coached the offensive line and was weekly the honorary captain. He was elected Homecoming King in a landslide. As of December 9, 2016 he was considered to be in total remission, but will be continuing maintenance treatments until March of 2019. He is cleared to walk, jog and even run and is delighted to be back in black Air Jordan sandals on both feet. “I’m going to start long snapping again,” he said. And he still hopes to play football in college. His biggest challenges, he said, “...

were the times I had to be at the hospital and I couldn’t go out with my friends, or I couldn’t go to practice, or had to miss some event, but it was just something I had to deal with.” Recently at football practice his teammates held up a sign which said WE BEAT CANCER. Diego commented, “That’s like holding up a trophy at the end of the season. That was amazing.” For inspiration Diego only had to look at his mother and father. “My whole family has always been there for me. My mom and Dad are my two best friends in the whole world.” Diego returned to school on January 3, 2017. And on May 24 he will graduate with the Class of 2017 “My school, my family, my two great doctors Dr. Saro Armenian and Debbie Toomey, my coach Frank Mazzotta and my defensive line coach Doug Creighton, My teammates my friends. There’s no way I’d be able to get through this without them.”

Lancers edge Lady Highlanders for first league loss By Frank Lara Risco La Habra Journal

Freeway League powerhouses La Habra and Sunny Hills were both on dominant undefeated league runs coming into Tuesday’s matchup, but by the end of their first matchup of the season the Lady Lancers gained an edge over the Lady Highlanders with an 16-4 six inning win to take sole possession of first place. Though the game was out of close contention in its final innings, pitching and defense dictated the first few innings. The Lady Highlanders were led by Hannah Johnson in the circle who forced a third out groundout with runners on second and third base early on and didn’t allow a hit in the second inning. Mariah Ramirez got the start in the circle for the Lady Lancers and only allowed only three hits through three innings to prevent La Habra from getting their offense going early. As the game entered the third inning it looked to be a low scoring pitcher’s duel in the making, but the Lady Lancers (14-6, 5-0) changed the course of the game. Throughout the Freeway League season Ramirez has been a top contributor in the circle but also at the plate, Tuesday’s game was no exception. The junior drove in the first runs of the game with a double to make it 2-0. Sunny Hills wasn’t done and added two more runs in the inning, including an RBI double by Gisele Acuna. The Lady Highlanders (15-7, 4-1) weren’t able to immediately respond to going down until the bottom of the fourth inning. La Habra looked to be on the verge

of tying the game when a two-run base hit by Savannah Tourville cut Sunny Hills lead in half, and then later in the inning they loaded the bases with only one out. A combined pitching and defensive effort got Sunny Hills out of the inning with their lead intact. With the bases loaded Lauren Huerta, who relieved Ramirez in the middle of the inning, stayed steady under pressure and struck out a batter and moments later senior catcher Molly Grumbo threw out a runner on a steal attempt to end the inning. Down by two is as close as the Lady Highlanders would get for the rest of the day. The Lady Lancers loaded the bases in the top of the fifth and in addition to knocking in a few, they took advantage of La Habra errors to extend their lead. After a bases loaded walk by pitcher Elena Valenzuela, who relieved Johnson in the fourth inning, to make it 7-2, Grumbo stepped up to the plate for Sunny Hills. The senior hit a hard line drive right to a La Habra outfielder. What looked to be a third out catch turned into three runs for the Lady Lancers when the outfielder failed to cleanly control it. On the very next at bat La Habra’s defensive woes continued when a Ramirez hit was dropped by an outfielder yet again to make it 11-2. “Those things just start to mountain up and it gets to a point and time in a game when you just can’t, you’re doing nothing right.,” said La Habra coach Steve Harrington The Lady Highlanders got two runs off Huerta in the bottom of the fifth inning, but the senior forced back-to-back groundouts to end the

inning with the Lady Lancers up 11-4. “If our pitching holds up it’s hard for them to overcome that,” Sunny Hills coach Arthur Jarman said about the pitching efforts on the day. In the sixth inning Sunny Hills topped off their big game at the plate with five more runs including an RBI sacrifice fly by Grumbo and RBI double by Ramirez. “They made some mistakes that hurt them a lot but we were hitting the ball really well,” Jarman said about the game After more than an inning of rest from pitching, Ramirez came back into the circle in the bottom of the sixth inning and closed out the game for the Lady Lancers early via the mercy rule. In addition to taking sole control

of first place and remaining undefeated in league play, the Lady Lancers brought the Lady Highlanders 14game Freeway League winning streak to an end. “We did not have the right mindset with which to compete,” Harrington said about the loss and added that it served as a “reality check.” “Everythings clicking right now,” Jarman said. The Lady Lancers visit Fullerton on Friday in their next Freeway League game. The Lady Highlanders take on city rivals Sonora at Sonora on Friday.

Raiders hold off League-leading Lancers By Jason Burch La Habra Journal

After posting four runs in the first, Sonora turned to a pair of strong relief efforts on the mound to hold off Sunny Hills 5-4 at home Friday afternoon. The Raiders took a 4-1 lead into the second, but the offense sputtered the rest of the way. “It was nice to start off like that scoring four runs with the guys playing well,” said Sonora head coach Patrick Tellers. “But then all of a sudden it was like they just turned the key off and you can’t do that.” The Lancers promptly loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the second inning, forcing Sonora starter Willie Castellanos to exit after just one inning of work. Tellers’ decision to go to the bullpen early paid off. Steven Perez inherited the jam and allowed only one run across to minimize the damage for the Raiders. Perez faced just two batters, inducing a pair of ground balls to shortstop, the latter a double play. “Perez pitching like that is what kept us in the game while we were scratching and clawing trying to score runs,” Tellers said. Perez held the Lancers scoreless until the fifth before running into trouble. A couple defensive miscues cost the Raiders a pair of runs and pushed Tellers to make another change on the mound. Dylan Villalobos took the ball with no outs and runners on the corners. Like Perez in the second, Villalobos quickly retired each batter he faced to end the threat.

With the game knotted 4-4, the Raiders answered back in the bottom half of the inning. A leadoff double from Isaac Ramirez followed by a pair of walks loaded the bases. Then after three solid innings of relief, Perez came to the plate and wore a fastball on his backside to force Ramirez home from third for what would be the game winning RBI. Perez allowed one earned run with two strikeouts in three innings of work. Villalobos allowed just one hit with three strikeouts in three scoreless innings to pick up the win. The former starting pitcher has settled into his new role of essentially being the Raiders long-closer. “With Dylan on the mound to close things out is a huge plus and that’s what he’s been doing for us, he has just been lights out,” Tellers said. After being one of the anchors of the staff last season, Villalobos entered the season with high expectations as a starter atop the rotation. Tellers said he decided to switch Villalobos’ role out of necessity because he had struggled to get deep into games this season. Tellers thinks his early struggles might’ve been attributed to Villalobos wearing down from the amount of innings logged as a starter and continuing to pitch through the off-season. “[Dylan’s] last start against Troy he got a little tired in the fifth and we were sitting there like, well what are we gonna do,” he said. “So now if we can get to the fourth or fifth inning with a lead, we can hand him the ball and say here you go and for the last couple weeks it’s been working.”

After jumping out to a 4-1 lead, Sonora held off a comeback attempt by Sunny Hills last week. The Raiders continue to battle Fullerton for the No. 2 spot in the Freeway League standings.

Villalobos said he is comfortable with the move and is excited to be able to help the team win in whatever role he can. “I’ve been pitching every series more than once and it seems to be working so I’m not complaining, I

just want to win.” Villalobos said. The Raiders have won four of their last five, improving their Freeway League record to 7-4. Now right behind Sunny Hills(9-2) and Fullerton(8-3), the Raiders are in strong contention for a CIF bid.
