Some administration changes are taking place at the La Habra City School District. Sharon Hensley has been hired as the new principal at Las Positas Elementary School. She is replacing Mike Klewer, who retired this year after nearly 30 years in education. Hensley was assistant principal for instruction at Buena Park High School and has served as a teacher at all grade levels. She HENSLEY was also a high school counselor. According to the LHCSD, Hensley has witnessed the power of teamwork and the impact it has on a school communiLOPEZ ty throughout her career and is looking forward to working together with students, teachers, school staff, parents, and members of the community In addition, the CARLOS LHCSD promoted Dr. Mario Carlos to director of communications and special programs. Carlos, who was principal of Washington Middle School, will be working closely with district administration to meet the needs of students in the La Habra City School District. To replace Carlos, Dr. George Lopez was appointed to be the principal of Washington Middle School. Lopez had been the principal of Ladera Palma Elementary School for the last three years. Prior to that, he was vice principal at Washington Middle School where he worked with Carlos. According to the district, a process has been initiated to select the new principal for Ladera Palma. They are looking to involve parents, teachers, and staff in the process, and a principal will be in place for the next school year.

OPINION Did you know... By Nicole Panza La Habra Historical Museum
In the early Twentieth Century, the discovery of oil on the Murphy-Coyotes lease in the hills southwest of La Habra did not occur without some deception. In 1903, Simon J. Murphy and his engineer William Plotts leased land from Bastanchury Ranch with the purpose of discovering oil. Despite the fact there was no surface oil seepage like at other sites near La Habra, Plotts theorized that they would be able to find oil at this site. Their efforts paid off a year later when their driller Lew Bauer discovered oil mixed with water at 3,200 feet. In 1905, Murphy purchased over 2,200 acres of land in the Coyote Hills from Domingo Bastanchury for about $35 an acre. At the time of the purchase, it was known that hot-water wells were discovered, but few people knew of the valuable oil discovery. In order to preserve the secret of this new oil discovery, a rumor was started by Plotts that kaolin clay, which was used for fine porcelain, was found on the site. A clay specialist was hired to test samples in a kiln close to where Lew Bauer was drilling. However, this clay specialist was really a detective hired by Plotts to monitor Bauer’s activities. This was to ensure that he was

not sharing information about this new discovery with his former employer Standard Oil. Small oil companies like the newly formed Murphy Oil Company were fearful of competition from a giant company like Standard Oil should they learn of their discoveries. The secrecy of the initial oil discovery even resulted in some legal trouble for Murphy Oil Company . After several years of successful oil production on the lands formally owned by Domingo Bastanchury, his heirs decided to sue. They claimed that Murphy and his associates deliberately misrepresented the discovery of oil to Domingo Bastanchury and because of this deception the land was sold for much less than it was actually worth. Bastanchury’s heirs cited the rumor started by Plotts about the discovery of kaolin clay as evidence that Murphy and his associates were consciously misleading people about the discovery of oil. A settlement of $1,200,000 was eventually paid to Mrs. Bastanchury and her sons, most of which went to lawyers and creditors. However, Bauer maintained that despite their accusations no fraud was intended between Murphy and Bastanchury, but Bastanchury’s lack of knowledge about oil prospecting did give Murphy an advantage in the sale of land. Just another interesting piece of history about where we live, work, and enjoy being a part of the La Habra community. Sources: La Habra: The Pass Through the Hills by Esther Cramer
Taking time to honor our own for achieving We don't usually have themed issues of the La Habra Journal, however graduations tend to call for that to happen. So, welcome to the Graduation Issue of the La Habra Journal. I think we focus on graduations in our community because they connect with us on some level. It could be that we have a child, sibling or other family member who is graduating and we want to acknowledge the accomplishment. We could have a neighbor who is graduating and we want to applaud their efforts and achievements. It could also be that many of us went to one of the three high schools in La Habra and we have a sort of school pride and want to welcome the new class of alumni into our community. Whatever the reason, we tend to welcome the graduations (unless you live or drive anywhere near La Habra High School during the actual ceremonies). It helps build our sense of com-
munity. We want to see our children grow and succeed. Just look at all the support for that "girl from La Habra on The Voice." Aliayah Moulden is one of our own and we cheered on her success. So, since we collectively get together and cheer those La Habrans who have achieved, we take the time to recognize this year's graduates. Enjoy!

La Habra teen reaches the finale of NBC's talent show 'The Voice' By Leon Romero La Habra Journal
The youngest finalist to ever grace the stage of NBC’s "The Voice" grew up in La Habra, and was attending La Habra High School before she left to Los Angeles to compete in the nation’s most watched televised singing competition. Fifteen-year old La Habra resident Aliyah Moulden impressed the celebrity judges with her striking rendition of Elvis Presley’s “Hound Dog” during the initial blind auditions. She chose to join team Blake Shelton over Alicia Keys and Gwen Stefani’s teams, and ended up placing third amongst the thousands of mu-

sicians who auditioned. Moulden was born in Annapolis, Maryland, and eventually moved to La Habra with her family when she was a year old. Her family noticed she began singing at a very young age, so her mother signed her up for singing lessons at the age of seven. In order to improve as a performer Moulden would perform for several local events including the La Habra Corn Festival and various La Habra Boys and Girls Club events. She’s been an active member of the La Habra Boys and Girls Club since she joined when she was five years old. “My experience on The Voice was life changing. It was a lot of work, but my coach Blake really helped me through my confidence issues and he let me try everything,” said Moulden. “I’m so thankful that people watched and sent me so much love.” The producers of the show contacted Moulden’s mother, Martha Jimenez, after viewing her daughter’s cover of Adele’s “When We Were Young” on her YouTube page. It was her first time auditioning for the show. Throughout her journey on The Voice, Moulden had the opportunity to perform with various high profile musicians including Alessia Cara and her coach Blake Shelton. She also released her very own single “Never Be Lonely” along with a music video towards the end of the season. “I thought it was a wonderful opportunity for her to participate in,” said Jimenez. “When it started we all

knew it would open up doors for her.” Moulden mentioned that she would love to return to La Habra High School and walk with her class her senior year, but in the mean time she’s been staying on top of her studies through La Sierra’s online academy. Moulden admitted that her favorite performance of the season was when she sang UK artist Duffy’s song “Mercy” during the playoff performances, because it’s one of her favorite songs to sing and she really wanted to make it into the top 12. She mentioned that she recalls practicing the song everywhere she went and would take cough drops so that she wouldn’t lose her voice. “I never thought of all this as being on a television show,” said Moulden. “I thought of it more as a performance.” Former La Habra mayor and city
councilman James Gomez was so proud of Moulden for making it to the competition’s finale that he arranged two "The Voice" viewing parties. The first one was held at the restaurant Señor Campos, and the final episode viewing party was held at the La Habra Boys and Girls Club. “Our entire community is so proud of her,” said Gomez. “We were all rooting for her until the very end.” Moulden is currently in the process of recording her next single in the studio, and said it should be released within the next couple of months. If you’d like to support her journey through the music industry, make sure to visit her official website: aliyahmoulden.com, and follow her Instagram and Twitter accounts where she can be found at @AliyahMoulden.

ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT
Lady Highlanders' commanding presence: Hannah Johnson By Jason Burch La Habra Journal
Minutes before the Lady Highlanders secured their second consecutive Freeway League title defeating Sonora in the final game of the season, starting pitcher Hannah Johnson was hit by a pitch. The seemingly innocuous play was only shocking because Johnson threw the bat down and focused her stare back at the pitcher for a second. Head coach Steve Harrington commented afterwards that he was taken aback at how Johnson reacted to the situation. You see the anchor of the Lady Highlanders staff is the coolest customer you might ever find when she’s in the circle. You might not know what Johnson is thinking or feeling when she’s commanding the circle. That’s because she is as calm as they come. If you’ve ever watched a La Habra game though, one thing is for sure--Johnson seems like she was born to pitch. And perhaps there is some truth to that. Johnson comes from a family full of talented pitchers and athletes, but many with unreached potential. Like her dad, Randy--no, not that Randy Johnson, but yes he too was a physically imposing left handed pitcher-and two older brothers Brett, 24 and Randy Jr., 27. All three were excellent athletes at La Habra High School, but each of them dealt with issues off the field that took their focus away from the game. Those mistakes proved to be a constant reminder for Hannah, because all three were in her ear telling her not
to go the same route they did from the time she first picked up a softball. “I would always preach to her, don’t make the same mistakes,” Brett said. “We all had the talent to get a scholarship, but we just didn’t realize what it would take at the time.” Actually Hannah’s first sport was surprisingly baseball. Though even in baseball she chose to be a pitcher. There was just no way anyone could get her to give up the ball. That’s just how Hannah is wired. Quiet on and off the field, but passionate about what she does--and supremely confident. “I don’t know maybe it was from playing in the backyard with my family, but I’ve always just wanted the rock in my hands,” Hannah said. The La Habra high school ace has kept that mentality the past four seasons as well. She compiled an impressive 0.92 ERA for her career at LHHS. Hannah anchored the Lady Highlanders to a school record 27-straight wins during her junior season. With Hannah’s consistently lightsout pitching and the success of Harrington, the new coach, the Lady Highlanders were the first team in the history of La Habra High School athletics to move up to Division 1 this season. Despite the perceived bump in competition, Hannah and the Lady Highlanders didn’t show any signs of slowing down at any point this season. She lead the girls to a 21-8 record, including an impressive 3-2 win over the No. 5 team in the Nation, Orange Lutheran in March at the Tournament of Champions in Bullhead, Arizona. She spent all four years on varsity,

but missed a good portion of her freshman year sidelined with a broken leg that she suffered sliding into home during a game while playing on her Nemesis travel ball team just before her high school career was set to begin. After a remarkable recovery, the rock was once again in her hands. And over the next three seasons, Hannah rarely relinquished. It should come as no surprise that Hannah has become such a dominant force in the circle, once you learn of the dedication she’s exhibited behind the scenes. High school is just the tip of the iceberg for a lot of these upper echelon softball players, but Hannah’s time investment is on another level. Malcolm Gladwell popularized the 10,000-hour rule, and that’s the time one would need to put into their craft to become an expert. When you combine the time she’s invested during her four years at La Habra alone, complete with; pitching
lessons, travel ball, high school and all the specialized training, all for six or seven-hour days either six or many times even seven days a week, Hannah is probably rapidly approaching the Gladwell benchmark. “I guess I look at it like it’s a business--but it’s fun for me,” Hannah said. And that speaks to the way she deals with the pressure taking the ball game-in, game-out for the Lady Highlanders and all of life for that matter. “I’m amazed, sometimes you can’t tell she’s pitching an important game out there,” Brett said. “And she’s the type of person who really doesn’t care what people say or think either.” The business of softball has been good for Hannah. Those countless hours of hard work have begun to pay dividends. Hannah announced her junior season that she accepted a full-scholarship to play at Cal-State Fullerton next year.

Raiders comeback bid falls short in CIF second round By Jason Burch La Habra Journal
A few days after their last inning heroics in the opening round of CIF, the Sonora baseball team found themselves staring down a four-run deficit before the offense had a chance to swing a bat when they hosted Victor Valley Tuesday afternoon. The Raiders chipped away at the lead, but ultimately couldn’t repeat their first round performance as the season came to a close with the 4-3 loss to the Jackrabbits. After spotting Victor Valley four runs in the top of the first, Dylan Villalobos gave the Raiders a spark in the bottom half of the inning with a two-run homerun to left field. “That [home run] felt really good,” Villalobos said. “I was hoping we could get past them after that, but we came up short.” “To go down 4-0 in the playoffs is
really, really hard to come back from, so to get that home run in the first was huge,” said Sonora coach Patrick Tellers. “Then every inning you gotta just work for one, but we went three innings where we got nothing.” The score remained 4-2 through the top of the fifth inning thanks to another strong performance from the Raiders bullpen. Willie Castellanos took the mound in the second inning and scattered five hits and a walk over the next three innings. Villalobos inherited a jam with two on and no outs in the fifth, but got the Raiders out unscathed. He shut the Jackrabbits down the final three innings, allowing just two hits with three strikeouts. The Raiders finally scratched another run across in the fifth. Derrick Phillips leadoff the inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. A couple batters later, Luis Chavarin singled with two outs to
bring Phillips home and make it 4-3. “The whole idea is to get your 3-4 hitters up there, but we left Ramirez on deck and Villalobos in the hole,” Tellers said. “We just needed one more shot and you never know because those are the two guys who could have gotten into it with this wind against that pitching, you never know.” Victor Valley starting pitcher Abdiel Mejia closed the door on the Raiders comeback bid though. Mejia sealed the complete game by retiring the final six batters to improve his record this season to 6-2. “We stayed strong and fought through every game this season and I’m proud of us,” Villalobos said. “We weren’t really expected to do much this year, but we made something out of it, it was a good senior year.” Mejia’s father and Jackrabbits head coach, Juan Mejia said his son just finished pitching a nine-inning complete
game one week ago to make it into CIF. “He gave up that two-run home run, but the thing about him is, he doesn’t get rattled,” Juan said. Juan informed his son that he would go to the bullpen if he gave up another hit after the Raiders rallied for a run in the fifth inning, but Abdiel responded to retire the final six batters in order. “We were warming someone up and his pitch count was getting up there too,” Juan said. “I said ‘if they get a hit, you’re coming out,’ but he dialed it in.” The Raiders 2017 season record was 19-12, and they finished second in the Freeway League at 10-5. “I’m happy with the way the seniors hung on, it was a fight and scratch year this year,” Tellers said. “For this group to go out and win 19 games was an absolute miracle on our part, to finish second in league with all the adversity these guys went through I’m just really happy for them.”
