Council modifies music permit

The Class of 2015

By Jay Seidel La Habra Journal

WHITTIER CHRISTIAN

LA HABRA

Sonora Congratulations: It’s that time of year again! More than 1200 seniors graduated last week from La Habra schools. Whittier Christian High School graduated at Friends Church in Yorba Linda May 26. La Habra High School graduated May 27 and Sonora High School graduated May 28. For names and some photos of the graduates, see Pages 7-10.

The La Habra 300 Bowl will offer karaoke for its entertainment after the La Habra City Council modified its permit to prohibit live entertainment at last month’s meeting. The owners of the bowling alley will be able to file for a conditional use permit with the city in order to have a DJ when special events are scheduled, but they will be subject to approval. The council’s concern for live entertainment at the bowling alley stems from an incident that took place in January. A fight broke out during a charity punk rock show and one individual was treated for cuts. “It was blown up into a much bigger situation then it was by the media,” said Andrea Werren, general manager of the 300 Bowl. As a result, Werren explained that she went to the city and requested to remove her permit for live entertainment during the police investigation of the incident. La Habra Police Chief Jerry Price reported that after investigating the incident, it was determined that the bowling alley violated three of the permit provisions. The assault and the violations were the primary factors in modifying the live entertainment permit. The bowling alley may file for a renewal to the permit to permanently include DJs in December, but only after demonstrating to the city that it can be operated without any further incidents for the remainder of the year. Werren said they will comply with the city’s modification in hopes to restore DJs and possibly live entertainment someday. “Our live concerts raised thousands of dollars for local La Habra charities and organizations,” Warren said. “We hope the residents of this great community will come in this summer and have some fun with us.”

Rancho Starbuck Intermediate School fundraising for student drumline equipment

Members and instructors of the Rancho Drumline have made it a goal to raise enough money to purchase their own set of equipment that they can use every day. The students currently borrow the instruments from local high schools. The staff has set up a fundraising page on the popular crowdsourcing website Gofundme. For businesses as well as individual sponsors who donate a certain amount, we are offering “thank you” rewards that may include having your name or business printed in all Rancho Band and Choir programs, name or business announced as a sponsor at all competitions, and name or business printed on a banner to be hung on the fence in the front of the school. “The students of the Rancho Starbuck Drumline are some of the best students on campus with a great Terry

reputation of being dedicated, classy, respectful, hard working, and very intelligent,” said Cameron Miller, captain head for the Rancho-Starbuck Intermediate School Drumline. Four years ago, the Rancho Starbuck Drumline began competing in the American Drum Line Association for the first time in school history. Junior High School Drumlines are not very common and to take this group into the competitive circuit was an incredible feat within itself. The very next year, the drumline went on to win a gold medal in the junior division in just its second competitive season! The next couple of years, the talent, dedication, hard work, and popularity of the group at the school (approximately 70 students audition each year) grew tremendously. 4 LOCAL NEWS La Habra celebrates Fire Service Day By Taylor Engle La Habra Journal

Fire engines and equipment filled the La Habra Community Center parking lot Saturday, but it wasn’t because of an emergency. The Los Angeles County Fire Department hosted La Habra’s first Fire Service Day where the public got to get an up-close and personal look at all of the department’s equipment. Vehicles from each division of the department were stationed in the parking lot for guests to peruse and accompanied by firefighters to answer any questions. On hand was one of the actual paramedic trucks used in the popular 1970s television show “Emergency.” Squad 51 was allowed out of the LACFD museum to be on hand for residents to reminisce about the show. The lot was also filled with various booths from the La Habra Host Lions, food vendors, the La Habra High School Cheer bake sale, and B.R.A.K.E.S., a nonprofit organization dedicated to teaching teens to be safe and responsible drivers. There were two vehicle extrication and K-9 demonstrations performed to ensure that all of the guests were able to witness the action. K IA d o n a t e s c a r s t o b o t h B.R.A.K.E.S. for their classes and the Los Angeles Fire Department for their demonstrations and training. Representatives from B.R.A.K.E.S. came along to support the event. “All of our instructors are certified professional race car drivers,” said volunteer Jim Stillinger. “Our goal is to teach teens how to respond in potentially dangerous driving situations and have them be more comfortable behind the wheel.” Inside the community center,

guests were welcome to explore the booths with safety information, find out more information about La Habra’s city events, and shop the Los Angeles County Fire Department apparel. There was also an area for children to visit to get their faces painted and participate in arts and crafts. Each booth included information on public safety, including the La Habra Water Department, the Community Emergency Response Team, Search and Rescue, and the Forestry Division of the Prevention Services Bureau. “Our division is responsible for soil erosion, tree planting, and recording the logistics necessary for emergencies,” explained Jon Baker, Deputy Forester of the San Dimas Forestry Division. The Forestry Division handed out pamphlets with information on wildfire safety, mini first-aid kits, and 150 trees. “The Forestry Department actually started the Los Angeles Fire Department,” said Scott Gardner, Deputy Forester at the LAFD. “The Forestry Department was founded in 1911 and then expanded into the Los Angeles Fire Department about 10 years later.” Members of the CERT team were there to supply more information on fire safety and training. CERT teams are made up of community volunteers who are trained in fire and emergency safety. “If we can’t get to a job quickly enough, CERT can go in and handle the situation until we get there,” said Fire Inspector Chris Reade. There was also a booth for the Department’s Highland Games and Pipes & Drums teams. The Highland Games were designed for firefighters to participate in to raise money for

memorials for both fallen and retired firefighters, funerals for fallen firefighters and assistance to their family members. The Pipes & Drums musicians are nonprofit organization that consists of 12 members, each with no musical background. They work to continue to raise the visibility of the fire department and of firemen who lost their lives or were hurt in the line of duty. “Pipes & Drums is a great way to connect with other firemen across the nation,” said Todd Emrick of the LAFD. Overall, the LAFD was very pleased with the turnout of this event. “I think the city of La Habra need-

ed to see all that the department has to offer,” said Steven Martin, Acting Deputy Fire Chief of the East Region. “This event has been exceptional,” said La Habra Parks and Recreation Manager David De Leon. “If we do this again next year, I can see attendance tripling.” Fire Service Day was a way to build a platform for the city’s Fire Department and engage the community in their services. Based on the number of attendees and hearing their conversations, the community was very pleased with the results of the event and the information in fire safety that was provided throughout the day. www.edwardjones.com

INSPIRATIONAL CORNER

5

By Dennis Laherty, the Co-Pastor of Emanuel Lutheran Church, La Habra

Summer is here, schools are in the process of breaking for a couple of months and families’ schedules are in flux as they change to accommodate more people going more places on more days of the week. Let’s make the changes to schedules as constructive as possible. It’s been several years ago now that a junior high school principal in a small mid-west town was speaking to a group of parents at this time of year. One of the parents asked her what her summer plans included. Her answer was especially appropriate because the second lighted arterial had just been added to the town. She said, “I’ve decided to change my prayer life. Whenever I get stopped at either light in town I’m going to use that time to pray.” People’s initial reaction was to not take seriously such a simple idea. Yet, the more people thought about it, the better the idea sounded. Praying while waiting for a light to change isn’t a bad idea, even in a city. How many other times might be added to enhance one’s prayer life. This time of year saying a prayer during a portion of a baseball game or soccer game might dramatically add to the amount of time a person prays. On a day when traffic may be slowing commute time, praying then might be helpful. Jogging, running, working out or generally exercising might work out as an excellent time to add to one’s prayer life. Standing watching a grill heat up gives a person several minutes to pray. These are intended to be just a few possible ideas regarding how to increase the amount of time one prays. No doubt, if you are reading this article you are able to generate your own ideas for increasing the amount of time you pray.

Taking care of pets is a passion

By Breanna Flores La Habra Journal

Vacations are especially popular during extended weekends; Memorial Day weekend was no exception this year. Pets and pet owners filtered in and out of The Dog Lodge lobby. Away from the outside buzz was Jazzy, a small, delicate white dog. The deaf and blind dog was kept in a large wire cage in owner Sharon Machlik’s office because she required more supervision than most others at the facility. Machlik said that even though Jazzy is a “regular” at The Dog Lodge, her owner still sits and cries for about 10 minutes every time she drops her off. Parting with a pet is often difficult for pet owners –even if it is only temporary. For this reason, Machlik and her staff try to make owners feel as comfortable as possible. “[Pets] really play an important part in people’s lives. It just takes talking to people and showing that you really care about the animal, rather than saying it’s just a business and [asking] how many days they’re going to be here,” Machlik said. Born and raised in Michigan, Machlik later moved to Indiana to pursue a Ph.D. in biochemistry at Purdue University. Years later, she received a phone call asking if she would be interested in moving to California to work in food product development. Years passed and Machlik gradually learned about dogs and grooming. She

acquired the former kennel about 15 years ago and added additional services to create a “complete pet care facility.” The Dog Lodge has remained competitive with larger companies by offering a flexible boarding facility. Instead of keeping dogs in a cage for the duration of their stay, dogs can access the outdoors during the day. At night, dogs are kept in an indoor area that is heated or cooled accordingly. Animal wellness is a top priority at the facility, this includes ensuring that the animals are eating regularly. In some cases, dogs become too stressed to eat. This is common for dogs who have never before been apart from their owner. With the owners’ approval, Machlik’s staff cook chicken and rice for any stressed dogs and coax them into eating and eventually regaining their appetite. Machlik said that it takes experience to learn how to handle a variety of animal temperaments and personalities. To ensure that new and current staff members know how to care for these animals, the facility is visited monthly by a veterinarian. The vet inspects the facility and also teaches the staff how to handle aggressive animals. In addition, suppliers also brief the staff on product benefits and uses. This includes products such as various shampoos for sensitive skin, dry skin and conditioners for dry skin. Animal care and supervision is

required 24 hours a day. To achieve this, some employees live adjacent to the facility. For those who are unable to drive their pets to The Dog Lodge, the company’s mobile van will drive to your house and groom. On average, grooming takes two hours. One of the ways Machlik gives back to the La Habra community is by donating boarding and grooming gift certificates to organizations. One of the most rewarding experiences for Machlik is seeing how happy people are, once they are reunited with their pet after a few hours or after several weeks. There are several dogs who have been boarded at The Dog Lodge for five or six years. Owners sometimes move to new

homes that do not allow pets or no longer able to care for their pets due to an illness. Pets are normally visited every few weeks but are kept at the facility long-term. Lady Highlanders battle but fall short

By Erik Markus La Habra Journal

The La Habra Highlanders softball team lost in a 1-0 heartbreaker that went 12 innings. Highlanders’ Janelle Rodriguez stepped to the circle to face division one recruit Meehra Nelson’s Westlake Warriors in the first round of CIF playoffs. The two pitchers looked dominant from the start, setting the stage for this marathon match. “It’s two quality pitchers, getting after it, it’s mano a mano, and those are the games you play for,” Westlake head coach John Ashley said. “Anything for your team, you’ll do,” Rodriguez said about pitching into the 12th inning. But as the innings added up one pitcher seemed unfazed while the other showed signs of fatigue. “It’s fine right now, I could probably go a couple more,” Nelson said about the strength of her arm. Janelle Rodriguez faltered first in the 12th inning, after she gave up a one out single. Abbey Hayes reached with a single. Rodriguez then threw a pitch that slipped inside to hit Morgan Melito on the leg, and walked Sarah Ho to load the bases. “In that last inning, I don’t know, everything just overcame me, the 12th inning, zero zero ballgame, just nervous,” Rodriguez said. Westlake, (20-9), remained patient and drew a second walk to bring in the winning run. “It was a battle of attrition,” Ashley said. “The first team to make a mistake, first pitcher to gas, that’s the team that will probably end up losing the game.” The Highlanders kept their hopes alive when Rodriguez made Nelson ground back to her. Rodriguez fielded the ground ball quickly cutting down the runner at the plate, then Nikki Butler caught Ho slightly off third, and was tagged out by Amanda Akles.

“We just happened to get lucky at the end, she ran out of gas, and the zone got a little smaller, and we got a run out of it,” Ashley said. The Highlanders were unable to generate any offense against Nelson as she collected her 23rd strikeout of the day. “She put it in the right spots, and she made our batters guess, I think we got a little too much in our head,” Gomez said. The Warriors decided to rest Nelson in preparation for this game with the expectation she would need to carry them. “She’s the beginning and the end for us, we win and lose with her,” Ashley said about Nelson, “this kid has the mentality, has the edge, has the metal to get that done.” At one point, Ashley pinch hit for Nelson, just to give her a few extra minutes to rest. The Highlanders stranded multiple runners in scoring position but Nelson had a knack for striking out batters at the most important times. “Both teams were fighters, and we fought till what, 12 innings,” Gomez said. Amanda Akles nearly broke up the tie early with a shot to left, but the ball curled foul just before it reached the fence. In the ninth inning, two Highlanders hit long fly balls out to center field, neither were able to find grass. In the 11th inning, Rodriguez drove a pitch to the left field gap after she fouled a pitch off of her foot. Rodriguez was held at first with two outs, but was left there after Butler struck out looking. Rodriguez had a stellar afternoon holding the Warriors to just the one run with 14 strikeouts. “She was determined and she was ready to pitch an awesome game, and that’s exactly what she did,” Gomez said. “I actually loved seeing them trying to hit the ball and seeing the strikeouts, playing against them was

just awesome,” Rodriguez said. For the Highlanders, who finished 19-9, it’s a tough way to end after contending for a league title and getting knocked out in the first round, but they return 12 of 16 varsity players. In their starting lineup against Westlake were three seniors, four juniors, one sophomore, and one freshman, with a sophomore designated player. “I want to just kill a team in the first round, and then just, I want it to happen, next year,” Rodriguez said.

Serrano stops Raiders title quest

stretch, including a leaping grab in left field which saved extra bases against Serrano. “Kootz’ play in the outfield kind of saved us, if he doesn’t make that play and it’s seven to nothing and it doesn’t look good,” Tellers said about Kootz’ bases loaded catch. With this season in the books,

and next season on the horizon, the Raiders focus remains on winning league titles. That goal will be tough as La Habra, Sunny Hills, and Troy are expected to be very similar. “We always shoot for a league title and 20 wins, and we got that,” Tellers said. “We got to the quarters, we just didn’t have it to get to the semis.”

The Sonora baseball team’s playoff run came to an end against Serrano on Friday afternoon falling 4-0. The Raiders offense faltered against one of the top pitchers in the division, RJ Peace who threw 11 strikeouts without giving up a run on three hits. “I’m feeling really good, I could have gone out there and thrown a couple more innings,” Peace said. Peace seemed to get stronger as the game went on, and struck out the side in the seventh inning. “I took a deep breath in that last inning, and just went after them,” Peace said. Peace got his team started with a leadoff double in the first inning and eventually came around to score. Meanwhile, Peace kept the Raiders off the bases, with no runner advancing past second base. In the first inning, Eli Villalobos reached first on a hit by pitch, but once he reached second, the Raiders next two batters were sent down. “You need your three, four guys to produce, and we didn’t get any production,” head coach Pat Tellers said, “tip my hat off to (Peace), he’s good.” For Sonora, JP Sarro took the mound but was getting hit hard early. In the third inning, with runners on first and second and one out, the Raiders missed a chance to escape without any damage. A hard grounder was hit to second baseman Matt Schmidt who bobbled

the ball loading the bases. Austin Taylor followed the error with a 2 RBI single to right. The Diamondback’s fourth run scored on a sacrifice fly from Saxon Andross. “They didn’t make mistakes and we did, they had the pitching, they had the offense and they had the defense, they do three things right, and we maybe had one and a half,” Tellers said. Sarro was able to get one out in the fourth before being replaced by Dylan Villalobos who was able to keep the Diamondbacks off the scoreboard. Despite Villalobos’ pitching effort, the Raiders were unable to find an answer against Peace. “We’re not going to be able to power the ball out of the field with these long swings, you’ve got to stay short and compact, you’ve got to try to be quick to the ball,” Tellers said. The Raiders will expect a new roster with 11 players graduating. The success that Tellers has seen from Villalobos will be a building block moving forward, along with a handful of other bright spots. “As a sophomore, we’re looking highly on him to be possibly our number one starter next year,” Tellers said about Villalobos. The Raiders outfield should look very similar with Junior Jason Clayton and Sophomore Wilem Drozdowski having successful ends to their season. Clayton began to flash his premium athleticism as the season progressed and Drozdowski’s bat was heating up. Chandler Koontz continued to show off his defensive skills down the
