OPINION

Did you know...

By Sue Thompson La Habra Journal

A song titled “Corn Festival Time in La Habra” was written by Fred De Moss. Mr. De Moss wrote the song in 1962 and presented it to the La Habra Lions Club for their 14th Annual Corn Festival. He was a resident of Brea where he owned a stationery store. In 2013, Rick Lobos and Rob Guadarrama of La Habra Music Center composed music to the words of the song. You can view the video on YouTube. The lyrics are as follows: Everybody get ready and have a good time today. They’re gonna give a lot of good things away. Have a good time with a little bit of pay, at the Corn Festival. You can all march in the parade or stand and sip that cold, cold lemonade, get a suntan or lay in the shade, at the Corn Festival. Eat corn on the cob till you get full in downtown La Habra at the Corn Festival. In the big parade you’ll see the Festival Queen. Now she’s the cutest Queen that you’ve ever seen. At the Corn Festival. There’s two princesses that sure look keen. At the Corn Festival. Now you’ll see an all-star musical band. And here’s the place to see the best in the land. Meet your neighbors and shake their hand. At the Corn Festival. Put on your old straw hat and bib overalls. You can fill the pockets with popcorn balls. Just walk on down, if that old motor stalls. To the Corn Festival.

That corn of the cob is good to the nub. You’ll wonder why, well I’ll tell you bub. That corn’s hand cooked by the Lions Club. At the Corn Festival.

Just another interesting piece of the history about where we live, work and enjoy being a part of the La Habra community. Special thanks to: Suzette Eschberger, Registrar, La Habra Historical Museum, Liz Steves, President, La Habra Host Lions Club and Rick Lobos, La Habra Music Center. Source: Star-Progress newspaper

I want to take a moment and bring some attention to the advertisers in this issue. I know this sounds a little self serving because publications make their money off of advertising revenue, but if you just take a moment and look at the diversity of the advertisers and think about our own habits as consumers. Take for example, Imperial Building Supply. They have been advertising in the La Habra Journal for years. They provide quality building material and they are a local business. Yes, La Habra has a Lowes and The Home Depot, which provide similar material, but there is something to be said about supporting the local and “mom-and-pop” business in our city. More time and attention needs to be given to those businesses by us, the consumers. How many times have you driven past shops in La Habra on your way to a larger chain store in another city? Countless I bet. These local businesses, whether they advertise in this paper or not, really do provide the backbone of our community. When you shop at or pay for a good or service from one of these small businesses, it shows support for a fellow community member. It also helps provide community activities and services through the local sales tax. When you pass them by to go to another city for the same good or service, you are supporting that other community. So, take a look at the variety of businesses we have in La Habra (not to mention those that are advertising in this issue) and consider shopping local the next time you need something. You’ll thank yourself later. —The Editor

Central Drugs gives free vitamins to LH families By Christina Ledesma La Habra Journal

With today’s fast food industry and frozen food selection in grocery stores, it is easier and cheaper for families to eat unhealthy, instead of eating healthy. Dr. Ashton Patel, board certified pharmacist and clinical nutritionist at Central Drugs Pharmacy said that this is because our lifestyles have changed over time. “What we use to eat back then is not the same now,” Patel said. “Our eating habits have not changed, we still eat the same amount of food. It is just not as healthy as it used to be. And our life styles have

changed in terms of activities.” According to Patel, because of our culture people are looking for the fastest and easiest way to eat food today and do not get all the nutrients that they need through the food they are putting into their bodies. One way to get the nutrients that you need would be through vitamin supplements. Patel also mentioned that even if you are eating a healthy balanced meal with vegetables, you still may not be getting all the nutrients that you need because our food today is not the same as it was generations ago. “You could be getting everything from an organic farm, but still, it is

not healthy because all the seeds are genetically modified, the nutritional value is not there,” Patel said. With the growing fast food industry and our changing lifestyles it is important that we teach children to make healthier choices and make sure that they are getting all the nutrients that they need. Patel said that it is extremely important for children to get the proper nutrients in their diet because it can affect their ability to learn and from excelling in school. “It affects their physical well-being, to their mental capacity of what they can perform at school and their cognitive functioning. That is the most important reason

why you want to give those nutrients to them, so they can be more focused and have extra energy,” said Patel. To bring awareness on this issue and also inform parents about the importance of vitamin supplements in a child’s diet, the Central Drugs Pharmacy in La Habra launched a program to provide free multivitamins for children 12 years of age and under. “We wanted to add value to families in the La Habra community and figure out a way to help” said Mark Leonard, Marketing at Central Drugs.

hattan Beach replaced Whatley for over four months before abruptly resigning during the recent Matrix Oil project. Brown expects BB&K to be involved in the Matrix Oil project working in whatever capacity the city needs from his firm — alongside Mark Ostoich, from the firm Gresham, Savage, who were recently hired by the city for legal advice in the matter. “I’m happy to remain as their interim city attorney, or whatever role I can be of help to them, for as long as they wish to employ my law firm,” Brown said. Brown has served as city attorney in various cities throughout California since 1976. While through

the duration of his career Brown has worked for local governments in a general council capacity and has served as the city manager in Unalaska or Dutch Harbor, Alaska during the summer of 1972. City officials seemed enthusiastic about adapting Brown’s legal advice to the council. “Though I had never worked with him before, it quickly became apparent that John Brown has a tremendous depth of experience as a city attorney,” said Shauna Clark, LHH city manager. “Many people commented to me that he is a great fit for La Habra Heights.” BB&K represents over 30 cities throughout California and Brown expressed he is looking forward to

helping La Habra Heights. One of the areas he hopes to help the city is with its communication. He maintains that it is not unusual for members of the public to be passionate about city government. He feels he has a chance to make an impression in the Heights. “I think that there are some real opportunities to lower the level of rhetoric in the city of La Habra Heights and open up the lines of communication in a way that hopefully will make everyone feel better about the process,” Brown said. “I pride myself on having done that in very difficult circumstances over the years in cities through out California.”

A Golden Celebration

La Habra High alum Chief Master Sergeant Richard Moody celebrates with family and friends at Westridge Golf Course last Saturday. By Jay Seidel La Habra Journal

La Habra native Chief Master Sergeant Richard Moody celebrated his retirement from the Air Force Saturday at Westridge Golf Course. The 1980 graduate of La Habra High School served 30 years in the Air Force and finished his career as aircraft maintenance superintendent with the 58th aircraft maintenance squadron at Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico. He started his long and notable career when he entered the air force in October 1984. Initially he was stationed at Sangdahlem AB, Germany working on f-4e/g models as a communications and navigation specialist. “My dad and uncle were in the Air Force,” he explained. “And I wanted to make a difference and do something different.” When looking back on his service,

Moody noted that the thing he treasures the most is the people. “It’s the dedicated people that make a difference,” he said about his fellow service members. Moody was deployed many times including operations Northern and Southern Watch as well as Operations Enduring an Iraqi Freedoms. One of his notable accomplishments was when he was stationed at Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii. It was there that he helped set up the Pacific Air Forces’ first mobility unit. The banquet room at Westridge was filled with Moody’s family, friends and Air Force personnel who were on hand to wish him well in his retirement. “I’m going to relax,” he explained of his plans after retirement. “I have a Harley now and I love golfing. So I’ll probably do a lot of golfing.”

Joan and Ron Woodward are celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary. Married July 17, 1964, at the Methodist Church in Gibbstown, New Jersey. The couple moved to La Habra in 1966. The celebration was put on by their family at The Cheesecake Factory in Brea. After 50 years of sharing their lives together, they say, “Thank you Blaine, Jennifer & Taj; Dwight, Terri, Toby, Trevor, & Dylan; Also Sharon& Bruce & Jacksun. What a wonderful life!”

VITAMINS: Central Drugs launches program to help keep children healthy From Page 4

Since the program started in May, 325 families have come into the pharmacy and signed up their children for the vitamin program. The program is also open to all families outside of the La Habra area. And in order to receive the vitamins parents just have to fill out a form and their child will also receive a box of crayons, a coloring book and a bravery certificate with their vitamins. Each month families will be able to get refills of the vitamins for an entire year. La Habra resident and Central Drugs Pharmacy Manager Ben Cano, said that when he was growing up in La Habra him and his family were not aware of the nutrients from vitamin supplements. “I think it is a lack of education and letting people know what resources are available to them. Some of the area has a little bit of lower income and lower education…and at times there are not opportunities,” said Cano. “This pharmacy is a reflection of the community and without caring

there is no sense of community.” The pharmacy is not only focused on providing vitamin supplements to children but also to help parents have a better understanding about their child’s needs as well as their own. The pharmacy also offers free biweekly seminars for parents who can come into the pharmacy and learn about children and adult health conditions. They also offer free webinars for those parents who would like to watch educational health videos at home. The schedule for the seminars and webinars can be found on the pharmacy’s website at: www.centraldrugsrx.com or at the pharmacy site. Dr. Patel also recommended that the community follow five core nutrition supplement categories to support good health: multivitamin, fatty acid, antioxidant, probiotic and bone nutrients. If you would like more information regarding your health you can download the pharmacy’s Life Essentials Guide which is also available on the website.

La Habra city bus line begins By Jay Seidel La Habra Journal

La Habra finally has its own citywide public transportation. The La Habra Express, which launches August 4, will run two buses through the city connecting residents with schools, shopping centers and other community locations. The creation of the bus line has been more than a year in the making. La Habra Councilman Tim Shaw, as representative on the Orange County Transportation Authority board, proposed the idea of a La Habra-only bus route and the board agreed. The idea of what would become the La Habra Express was born. It is funded in part through OCTA’s Measure M money. This helps cover the cost of providing the new buses Monday through Friday. City officials are hopeful that after the launch and as the number of riders increases that weekend service will become available. As a way to introduce the bus line to the community, all riders are free for the first week of operation (Aug 4-8). Starting Monday, August 11, the standard fair of $1 will be required to ride the bus. The city officials wanted to ensure that the buses would provide riders

with everything they need. Aside from air conditioning, the La Habra Express buses offer plug-in jacks to charge mobile devices like cellular phones and tablets. Further, City officials are working with OCTA to implement WiFi access in all La Habra Express buses. The routes for the La Habra Express will also provide service to St. Jude Hospital and the Transportation Center in Fullerton. This allows community members to further utilize public transportation. For more information about the service go to the La Habra Express website, which is named after the bus line’s motto, at: wwwgoplacesseefaces.com For a look at the bus and service, check out the brief video. La Habra Heights luxury home tour

Hundreds of people and dogs of all breeds and sizes filled The Park at Hacienda in La Habra Heights Saturday for the ninth annual Dog Days of Summer. The event, sponsored by the city of La Habra Heights, focuses on everything related to our canine friends. More than 50 vendors were on hand that specialized in everything dogs need. There were demonstrations of police K-9, search and rescue, dock diving, sheep herding and much more. There was also the highly competitive “wiener dog” races. Some of the proceeds went to help benefit the La Habra Heights-based nonprofit group the Pet Prescription Team. The organization helps pet owners train and certify their family pets to be trained for assisted therapy visits.

Seize this rare opportunity to view multiple luxury homes in one afternoon. Call for a list of homes and directions! Sunday, August 3 From 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Photos by Lalig Tarbinian/La Habra Journal

LH area students win top awards at OC Fair By Jay Seidel La Habra Journal

Each year the Orange County Fair recognizes the top livestock raised by county FFA and 4-H students. This year, many of the top awards were given to Sonora and La Habra High School students. Sonora’s Sarah Hill received the FFA Grand Champion Market Beef award for her steer. La Habra High School’s Destiny Ramos followed up Hill’s award by having her steer named FFA Reserve Grand Champion Beef. These mark the top two titles for the steer competition. Sonora’s Marcus Wood took the FFA Grand Champion Market Goat title. La Habra’s Sarah Dunn took the top award with her FFA Grand Champion Calf. The students spent approximately the last nine months raising their livestock to show at the Fair and go to market. The higher the award, the greater the value the livestock will earn when sold. The money then goes back to help fund the school programs.

By Jay Seidel La Habra Journal

The LaHabra Girls Softball Association 10-U All Star team is headed to the Western National Championship Tournament, which starts Monday in Sacramento. The 42-team, week-long tournament begins with pool play to determine team seedings, then goes into double elimination play. The La Habra girls placed second in their division behind Placentia Yorba Linda and moved on to district play. They qualified for nationals despite losing to Downy by one run after a long district tournament last week in Lancaster. Coach Tony Ruiz praised the girls’ effort and drive to get to this point and he feels the girls are ready to represent La Habra and bring back a trophy. La Habra starts the tournament against Livermore Tuesday at ll a.m.

When looking back, the Sonora Raiders 2013 football season would not be characterized by the term excitement. The Raiders were a team which started few seniors and ended the season led by a sophomore quarterback and tailback. The Raiders dropped all but one game during freeway league play, and ended with a 2-8 record. A victory against Sunny Hills to finish off the season left a glimmer of hope for the Raiders. “Playing as many young guys as we did, we knew it was going to be a tough year, but we knew we were also building for the future,” Raider Head Coach Paul Chiotti said. However, the 2014 season could be a different story. The Raiders will return 9 of 11 starters on offense, and 8 of 11 defensive starters. The Raiders have seen their team grow not only physically with another year of growth and weight training, but have been able to grow mentally increasing their understanding of the game and the playbook. “This is an exciting year for us, I think our kids definitely want to go out there and have something to prove,” Chiotti said, they’ve been working hard and I think they want to show everybody that we were a young squad last year.” Last season, the Raiders picked up their only league victory with a win over Sunny Hills in the season finale. Sophomore Jacob Fimbres ran for 233 all purpose yards en route to being named First Team All League. He finished the year with 858 yards on the ground and 254 yards receiving. This year he will transition to a role as the primary tail back after starting last year as the team’s starting safety. Cole McDonald will start the year at quarterback with his entire starting offensive linemen returning with at least three games experience. Jorge Bernabe will look to follow up his second team all-league selection as the team’s top offensive tackle and defensive end. “He’s put on the size and he’s one of our hardest workers and gets after it, and I think he’s going to have a breakout year for us,” Chiotti said about Bernabe. Brandon Ahrndt will be moved

to receiver after losing his starting quarterback spot to McDonald. Ahrndt’s season was cut short due to injuries and will be joined by Jason Clayton at receiver. “(Clayton’s) had a tremendous summer and is really emerging as a brave wide receiver and playmaker for us. With camp ahead for the Raiders, they will look to develop some depth amongst the younger players. “We’re hoping a couple of the younger guys who maybe didn’t get the playing time last year can step up and give us the depth that we need,” Chiotti said. With greater depth the Raiders hope to be able to endure a long season. “Our league is pretty physical so it’s nice to sometimes get some other kids to step in and help keep each other accountable.” With a handful of seniors ready to step into leadership roles, they have set their sights high. The Raiders will look to compete for a league title, win a CIF playoff game, and if everything breaks right come away with a CIF title. The Raiders open the season up with three home games before traveling to play Don Lugo High School. Sonora returns to host Whittier Christian for the first time. The Raiders will play most of their Freeway League games on the road, including ending the season against perennial powerhouse La Habra. “If they want to achieve these goals,” said, “they have got to compete on every play, every second, and every game.”
