Car show raises funds for band trailer By Leonardo Romero La Habra Journal

Over 150 show cars filled La Habra High School’s parking lot on Saturday for the seventh annual La Habra Highlander Car Show. This year’s show featured a special 9-11 remembrance with an address from Mayor James Gomez. There were over 70 vendor booths and exhibits that surrounded the parking lot as well as a truck from the American Red Cross with volunteers looking for attendees that were willing to donate blood. According to the La Habra Highlander Car Show Facebook page the truck collected 32 pints of blood from those who donated. The band Vintage 45 provided live music throughout the event, and according to the band’s vocalist and drummer, Dave Mitchem, it was their fourth time performing for the car show. “It was all very well organized from the moment we came to set up all the way to the end,” said Mitchem. Those in attendance were also treated to performances from LH-

HS’s marching band, color guard, and drumline. There were eighteen trophies awarded to the cars that had the best presentation in various classes. The classes included best engine, best antique, best muscle car, and the highest honor being best of show. Ricardo Madura and his 1956 Ford F100 Pickup won this year’s coveted best of show trophy. La Habra resident and show car owner, Robert Decious, brought his 1971 Chevy Chevelle convertible to the show for the third time and left with the trophy for best paint. His convertible has a gold mine pearl metallic paint, Budnik racing wheels, and leather interior. “We got lucky because there are a lot of nice cars here, and we’re just thankful to have won something,” said Decious. This year’s car show chairperson, Chris Landis, confirmed that this year was the biggest and most successful show they’ve had so far. He was thrilled to coordinate and present the model A cars exhibit and military vehicle exhibit

to the car enthusiasts that attended. The car show is one way for the LHHS Band Booster program to raise funds for the marching band, color guard, and drumline by selling food and drinks. The program has raised over $60,000 from donations and sales at events for new band equipment, and after this year’s car show they were aiming to raise enough funds to buy the first LHHS band trailer and they did. “In this day and age the bands are left to have to raise their own money, and even though the school does support us a lot we still have to raise that money to get things done,” said Landis.

For the next two months La Habra will hold community events that recognize and honor its Hispanic, and in particular Mexican, roots. The annual La Fiesta event at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church invites the public to a day of fun and food at the areas largest Catholic church. OLG will also host the celebration Dia de Los Muertos on October 29. The traditional Mexican celebration is a way of the living to honor those loved ones who have died. Decorative alters to remember loved ones will be placed around the church’s sanctuary. In November, the city will hold its annual Tamale Festival. The event, which has grown in the three years it has been held, will move from the La Habra Community Center to Eculid Street and Portola Park and organizers said that there will be more tamale vendors and live entertainment for the community to enjoy. La Habra’s connection with the Hispanic community comes from when Rancho La Habra was a part of land under the Mexican government. Later, La Habra was home to hundreds of migrant farm workers who lived here and traveled to work in the local citrus orchards and into the farms of California’s Central Valley. More information about these events inside this issue and will be provided by the city and Our Lady of Guadalupe Church.

COMMENTARY

Did you know... By Nicole Panza La Habra Historical Museum

The Farmer’s Club in La Habra was the predecessor to the La Habra Chamber of Commerce. Formed in 1903, the Farmer’s Club served both agricultural and social interests of La Habra Valley residents and frequently sponsored activities with the Woman’s Mutual Improvement Club. In 1914, the Farmer’s Club became known as the Chamber of Commerce of La Habra after F.R. Aldrich was appointed to represent the La Habra Farmer’s Club at the Orange County Associated Chamber of Commerce. This organization was dissolved in 1917 after the Merchants’ and Manufacturers’ Association began to take the lead in promoting La Habra’s development. However, in 1920 the association renamed themselves the Chamber of Commerce and invited all those interested in La Habra’s development and business affairs to join. The La Habra Chamber of Commerce was incorporated as a non-profit on October 28, 1940. The Chamber of Commerce has occupied many buildings over the course of its 102 years serving the La Habra community. Due to its early connections to the Woman’s Mutual Improvement Club, the Chamber often met at the Wom-

an’s Clubhouse. The Chamber also had offices in the Citrus Association building located at 300 S. Euclid St. until the 1960s when the citrus industry in La Habra declined rapidly. The Chamber of Commerce’s current location at 321 E. La Habra Blvd was built in 1980 in order to give the Chamber of Commerce a permanent home. Appropriately enough Aldrich Street, named after F.R. Aldrich, runs perpendicular to the Chamber of Commerce’s permanent location. If you are interested in learning more about the history of La Habra’s non-profits please visit the La Habra Historical Museum’s new exhibit Our Community Cares. The La Habra Historical Museum will re-open on Saturday, October 1, 2016 after being closed for the month of September. The museum is located at 215 E. La Habra Blvd, and will be open from 12-4pm. Just another interesting piece of history about where we live, work, and enjoy being a part of the La Habra community. Growing up in La Habra, you are surrounded and immersed in a cross-cultural community. I remember being a little kid and eating pan dulce (I still eat it on ocassion), warming tortillas on the stove and eating them with butter and drinking Jaritos or enjoying raspados on a hot day. Yes, La Habra is a cross-cultural blended city. It’s the way it has been for decades. Over the last couple of years the city has started to really embrace its history and acknowledge its Hispanic, and in particular, Mexican heritage. In the next two months, three community festivals celebrating La Habra and its Hispanic culture are taking place. That’s more than any of our surrounding cities do. There are some that will read this and feel tired of things in Spanish. That's understandable. It is the United States and English is the official language. But, I remind those that we are in Southern

California and were historically once a part of Mexico. There have been Spanish speaking people here for centuries. So, it's kind of natural. I’m sure there might be people in the greater Minneapolis area that tire of Swedish or Norwegian. And some of my relatives from rural parts of Pennsylvania that tire of being surrounded by German language and culture. But, that’s the way it is. The people that came to the land embraced it and helped develop it, and they brought their culture with them too. I’m glad the city is acknowledging its long history with Hispanic culture. I’m also glad there are opportunities to embrace others as well. So, while I wait for La Fiesta or the annual Tamale Festival in November, I will also enjoy a bratwurst with mustard and kraut with a Hofbrau Munchen for Oktoberfest at La Habra’s Continental Deli. What a great community. —The Editor

OBITUARY

Long time La Habra educator

Former Washington Middle School Principal Gar y Mantey was called home to his everlasting life in the early morning hours of August 24, following a brief illness. He was born in Yakima, Washington, the second of five children, to Fred and Elayne Mantey. Growing up, Gary was solely educated in parochial schools, including three years of high school and two years of college at Concordia Portland. He completed his degree in education at then-Concordia Teachers College in Seward, Nebraska, the alma mater of his father and grandfather. Gary received his Masters Degree from Chapman University in Orange County. Gar y performed his student teaching in Wisconsin and his first teaching assignment was at St. John’s Lutheran School in Bakersfield in 1970. He eventually ended his career as Principal at Washington Middle School, in La Habra. During his tenure there Gary was honored with many awards, most prestigiously as California’s Middle School Principal of the Year in 1999. He retired in 2009, after a long and illustrious career. More than just a student and educator, Gary lived life joyously and completely: He traveled

LOCAL NEWS

INSPIRATIONAL CORNER

Gary A. Mantey 1948-2016 extensively and often; too many destinations to list. Gary met his wife, Marnie on a trip to China in 1978; thereafter they traveled the world together. Memorable were his two remarkable three week “Boys on the Loose” trips with his high school pals through Europe, which brought them all tremendous joy, his solo 48-hour journey to India just to see the Taj Mahal, and most recently visiting Cuba, with Marnie, followed by the Baltic and Russia, to name a very few. Gary took extreme delight in each and every excursion and still, he had a “bucket list.” Gary’s love of British automobiles came at an early age; when other young boys were making ’57 Chevy models, Gary was building MG’s and Triumphs. He had the pleasure of owning numerous vintage cars, notably a red 1949 MG-TC, a 1954 MG-TF and ultimately “Grace”—his retirement gift to Marnie—a beautiful two-toned green 1956 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud, which he further restored and proudly showed at local car events winning several awards. Gary leaves behind his beloved family —his wife of 34 years, Marnie, daughter Lauren, her husband Tommy McCracken, granddaughters Evelyn (Pippie) and Isabelle (Izzy Bee), and close family companion of many years, Cristina “Tutu” Guzman. He was preceded in death by his father, Fred Mantey, and is survived by his mother, Elayne Mantey of Salinas, his elder brother Tom, of Fresno, sister Barbara (Darryl) Smith, of Ventura, brother Steve (Sandi) Mantey of Salinas and sister Nancy (Bryan) Hawes,

By Dennis Laherty, the Co-Pastor of Emanuel Lutheran Church, La Habra

I can recall that when my first grandchild was born my dad looked at a photo of her and said, “she’s a real keeper.” I knew what he meant and it was very complimentary. It’s fascinating how a fishing term could make its way into our vocabulary and apply to those things or people who are highly acceptable. Another phrase that is fairly common is “give and take”. Some people feel that for a marriage relationship, or any relationship for that matter to work, there needs to be “give and take”. I’ve come to realize however that the phrase is structured incorrectly. The phrase more correctly stated ought to be “give and keep”. There are so many aspects of our lives where “give and keep” plays a role. Certainly in relationships the concept is present. Actually anywhere we can give something, we can also keep something. We can give of our time or we can keep our time. When we decide what we are doing with our time hopefully we don’t consider how we can take time from another person. When we contribute to a charity we make the choice to either give or keep what we have. When we relate to our children we either give of ourselves or keep ourselves intact. Usually parents find a middle point that hopefully works well for everyone involved. So we have a new use of the word “keeper”. Are you a keeper or a giver? Are you satisfied with the balance in your life regarding what you keep and what you give? Do you want to make changes in the percentage of time or possessions that you give or keep? The balance between giving and keeping can certainly lessen stress in one’s life. The balance can be a benefit to you and to the recipient. Keeping or giving, it’s your decision. *The Communty Religious Services Page will return next issue* of Bayside. In addition, Gary leaves behind his sisters-in-law, Barby (Russ) Stone and Kathy (Tommy) Stone, numerous nieces, nephews, one Aunt Evagean, several cousins and many, many dear friends, including his special friends from high school, with whom he had been planning to attend his 50th reunion this month.

A special heartfelt thank you to Barby and Kathy who were with Gary during the majority of his final illness, and to the doctors and staff at Kaiser Irvine. Our gratitude for your devotion to him is something for which there are no words. Memorial services were Sunday, September 11, at Saddleback Chapel, Tustin.

Success for every child is a priority in La Habra City Schools

September 2016

Our mission in the La Habra City School District is to not only prepare our students to thrive in high school, but to have the critical thinking skills and capacity to innovate and collaborate as they pursue careers, college, and active citizenship in a global economy. We appreciate the support of our community in helping us achieve that vision for every child.

Technology: New Learning Opportunities for our Middle School Academy Students

The La Habra City School District is pleased to announce a take-home iPad program for its middle school academy students. Students at our middle school academies have been using iPads in the classroom at a one-to-one ratio for the past few years, but this new program will provide all middle school academy students with their own iPad to be used both at school and at home. This fall iPads were deployed to students at our Washington and Imperial Academies. The iPad one-to-one take-home home program will help to create a learning environment that enables extended student-instructor interaction. This environment allows each student to learn at a personalized level and pace. The iPads are intended to be tools that both teachers and students can utilize at school and home to expand the curriculum and learning experience. They do not replace the curriculum or fundamentals of teaching. The iPad program will give La Habra students access to technology tools that will assist them with their homework to extend learning outside of the traditional classroom. Additional information on the program and school enrollment opportunities is available by contacting our middle school academies directly.

District Technology Staff Checking out iPads to Middle School Academy Students

New school year off to a great start! La Habra City School District has had a great start to the 2016-2017 school year. Our nine sites are preparing the students in our community for high school, college, and beyond. Our Dual Immersion Program at Arbolita School is now successfully serving students in kindergarten through second grade. Kindergarten students at El Cerrito are benefitting from their full day program. Ladera Palma staff members have continued to learn more about Cognitively Guided Instruction and are leaders in the county in the use of this mathematical strategy. The Lions of Las Lomas are using Thinking Maps to support their amazing writing. Las Positas students are developing their leadership skills with the help of Steven Covey’s “Leader in Me” curriculum. While the Sierra Vista staff was thrilled to learn they have been selected as a “No Excuses University” school of distinction, the only one in North Orange County. In addition to the terrific new parking lot and future renovations at Walnut School, students are preparing for success by developing their study habits and organizational skills with AVID Elementary. Our district’s future engineers at Washington Middle School are moving along nicely with Project Lead the Way, while our artists, actors, vocalists, and musicians at Imperial are developing their skills and preparing for their concerts, plays, and showcases. La Habra students and staff have certainly embraced the new beginnings of the school year.

Let’s Talk is open 24/7 to take your comments, compliments, and feedback. By using the included QR code or accessing the Let’s Talk tab on our District’s website at www.Lahabraschools.org .

The Pursuit of Excellence Every Day, For Every Student Interim Superintendent Marc Winger Our instructional staff strive to develop a 21st century learning environment for all students. Students enter school eager to learn and teachers and administrators are designing learning environments to empower students to maintain a growth mindset about their abilities. Staff encourages students to take risks and view setbacks as critical to their learning and growth. LHCSD students are engaged in solving complex problems and learning to be creative and effective communicators, thinkers, and doers. Encouraging a growth mindset empowers students with lifelong skills that enable them to overcome obstacles and continue to grow and develop. Teachers use technology as a tool to support the implementation of the Common Core Standards and to develop students’ skills in the 4 C’s - Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, and Critical Thinking. They meet weekly in “Professional Learning Communities,” small groups of teachers who work collaboratively to assess the school program, develop lessons, and provide interventions for students who need extra help. District classrooms are transforming into learning spaces designed to maximize instruction to support the needs of all students. Students work collaboratively to learn the elements of physics through designing and building roller coasters. They use computer aided design software to solve problems while gaining skills in communication, collaboration, criticalthinking, use coding skills to work collaboratively to test theories, design multiple solutions, and take ownership of their learning through robotics. They engage in Project Based Learning to solve real world problems such as designing and creating a drought tolerant garden to address soil erosion and conserve water. Students participate in student showcases and local competitions to share and demonstrate their learning with the community. Teachers and administrators also understand that successful students must be provided with the tools to develop a healthy lifestyle, which is why our Physical Education program, including the Fit Kid Centers and expanded Physical Education staff, is working in concert with the La Habra City’s initiative to Move More-Eat Healthy. We are confident that we are empowering our students with a passion for learning to continue to grow and develop into tomorrow’s leaders.

Celebrating Our Teachers At the beginning of each school year, we honor our certificated staff members that have achieved a milestone in years of service with the district. This year we were fortunate to recognize two very special teachers celebrating 35 years of service. Karen Irizarry, a kindergarten teacher at Ladera Palma, and Vicki Short, a Special Education teacher at Las Positas, received a golden apple as a small token of the District’s Vicki Short and Karen Irizarry appreciation of their years of providing quality educational programs to our students. We are so proud of these very dedicated teachers who have chosen to spend their careers serving the students and families of the La Habra community. Recognition pins were also given out to more than forty-five teachers for 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 years of service.

LOCAL NEWS LH Rortary recognizes outstanding leaders By Jane Williams La Habra Journal

More than a month of the high school year is done and it was time for La Habra Rotary to salute the September Students of the Month from the three local high schools. Each brought their school's outstanding student leader to Rotary's September 16 meeting. La Habra High School chose Alyssa Frick, a graduate of Rancho Starbuck and a member of its Top 100. As a Freshmen she enrolled in the MBA program and joined the School Site Council. Her mother had to drop her off at school early in the morning to get to her work on time. Frick decided she might as well try out for ASB so she had a place to be in school before the regular day began. She fell in love with ASB, the people leading the growth of school spirit at the pep rallies and the games. Her fellow ASB members awarded her the most spirited. She went to Spain, Italy and France and aspired to develop a career in travel. That led her to switch to the AP Heritage program in tenth grade, She continued in the School Site Council and was elected sophomore class treasurer. That led to her helping put on her favorite school event ever—an action fight between “Bane and Batman” to promote the superhero dance. She became even more involved in keeping school spirit on Friday nights by helping to resurface the Highlander mascot and the running on the

field with the Scottish flag. That led to her receiving the Most Spirit and the Battery Award in ASB. In her junior year her class elected her president, she joined NHS, continued on School Site Council, and was elected Student Advisory Council Vice Chair as well as getting her first job. As a senior she got a second job, enrolled in all AP classes and was elected Executive Board Secretary. In her spare time she has volunteered for two years at the Community Center Summer Active Day Camp, and worked on service projects in Italy helping children with special needs. She currently volunteers at the Sunday School service at her church. She hopes to attend UC San Diego or Santa Barbara and major in anthropology. Whittier Christian selected Sherry Zhang as the person who provides selfless leadership on the campus. Having come to the school to master English from her native China and in her third year at the school, she makes her home with a chaperone in Diamond Bar. She is the international student representative on ASB and makes sure she meets every incoming international student and offers them advice and help when they request it. As a senior, she is taking AP chemistry and AP English. She helped to put together a Cultural Day on the campus, allowing students to learn and experience the different cultures represented on the campus. In her three years at WCHS she

has also developed great enthusiasm for America. She plans to apply to Boston University, NYU and Northeastern University and experience the East Coast. Sonora selected Ashley Weiner who is in her fourth year of serving on ASB at the school, each year as a treasurer of her class or ASB for the past two years which Mr. Hardy, ASB advisor, refers to as, “one of our most thankless positions but it is especially crucial for helping Sonora run.” Fortunately, she likes finance and plans a business career.A 13-year member of Girl Scouts, she is also her troop's treasurer. She is active in Brea's Saint Angela Merici church, having been a member of the altar ministry for the past

seven years, and also helped other teens in the confirmation process. She plays guitar and bass, drums and clarinet and has participated in the project rock band. While doing all this, she has managed to maintain a 4.57 GPA while taking 10 AP/IB classes and 12 honors courses. Every other day she delivers Sonora's morning announcements. She has been a major help with the Christmas Food Drive during her three years at Sonora, served special needs students as a member of Best Buds, and was chosen to be a member of the National Honor Society as a junior. She plans to apply to Notre Dame and the University of San Diego.

Commans leads Heralds in decisive win over Bell

By Jay Seidel La Habra Journal

WHITTIER—Junior Quarterback Quinn Commans started the Whittier Christian game against Bell Friday like it was any other game day. However, by the end of the night he was the holder of a new county record for passing and hovered near the top of CIF Soutern Section passing totals in the Herald's 68-55 victory at Whittier College. Commans finished the night 27 for 39 for 490 yards and 9 touchdowns. He also raced up nine carries for 48 yards and adding his own rushing touchdown. The Heralds came out of the gates strong, scoring on nearly every possesion. Commans connected with a variety of receivers. Nico Albertini and Cade McGee had three touchdowns each. Albertini finished with six catches, for 88 yards, and McGee had 10 catches, for

211 yards. Receiver Noah Sanchez had catches for 106 yards and scored two touchdowns. Justin Osborn grabbed the other touchdown pass and finished with five receptions for 71 yards, as well as had 17 carries for 166 yards in the win. Commans and the Heralds will be on the road against Duarte Friday. With 10 touchdowns, the Heralds have raised $4,430 for the Touchdowns Against Cancer program. To honor the memory of Abbey Schemmer, and in support of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, Whittier Christian is inviting our fans to pledge a donation for every touchdown they score from September 15 to October 1. Every touchdown scored by the Heralds during this campaign will directly benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and help defeat childhood cancer.

SPORTS Highlanders undone by Griffins’ big plays By Jason Burch La Habra Journal

La Habra uncharacteristically gave up a handful of long touchdown runs early and dropped its third consecutive game at the hands of an explosive Los Alamitos offense Friday night. Los Alamitos came into the contest motivated by the lingering image of La Habra’s last-second hail mary touchdown victory over them a season ago. The Highlanders once again scored on the last play of the game. However, there was no miracle this time, just a 40-29 final score prompting the visiting Griffin fans to rush the field. Dylan Laurent burned the Highlanders with three long first-half touchdowns of 51, 62 and 74 yards, and finally put the game out of reach late in the fourth quarter with a 30-yard score. Laurent finished with 183 yards on the ground and four touchdowns. “Our guys are really talented,” said Ray Fenton, Griffins head coach. “We have some big time athletes, Dylan Laurent I think is outstanding, he is a special player.” The Griffins built a first half lead with a pair of special teams scores. “We think special teams is an op-

portunity to score and we have always felt that way,” Fenton said. Laurent’s first score came on a 51yard punt return to make it 13-0 with a minute left in the first quarter. Early in the second quarter with the Highlanders in the red zone, Madison Wheeler ran the offense from the pistol and leaped over the pile for a 1-yard touchdown to make it a one-score game. Keanu Norman took the ensuing kickoff back 81 yards for the touchdown. Zach Fogel led the Highlanders back down the field and set up another Wheeler touchdown from inside the red zone. The Griffins answered back just two plays later with a 74-yard score by Laurent leaving the Highlanders down 33-14 at the half. The Highlander defense tightened up and nearly kept the Griffins off the scoreboard the entire second half, until Laurent put his stamp on the game with the final score. “We just dug ourselves a hole we couldn’t get out of tonight,” said Frank Mazzotta, La Habra head coach. Fogel got off to a lackluster start against the Griffins, but began to con-

nect with Prince Ross in the second quarter and finished 13-24 for 179 yards with a touchdown, a fumble and one interception. Ross had his best performance of the season with 119 yards and a touchdown. Freshman Jacobah Fuamatu saw action at running back for the Highlanders and scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Mazzotta said he has been looking for opportunities to get Fuamatu

more carries because he loves his running style and feels that he will just keep getting better with more game experience. “You got to punish the defense, you have to run into the defense and make them not want to tackle you late in the game,” Mazzotta said. “That’s what I love about Jacobah, he runs hard.” The Highlanders will be at home again next Friday taking on Colony High School.

Lady Highlanders sweep Heralds Highlander golfers beat Ayala The Lady Highlanders came out battling in their 3-0 win over the visiting Whittier Christian volleyball team last week.
