ur Port of Call for April focuses on the Lake St. Clair communities of St. Clair Shores and Mount Clemens (p. 38). Lake St. Clair is located between Lakes Erie and Huron. Though not officially a Great Lake, Lake St. Clair plays a vital role in the St. Lawrence Seaway. The lake is approximately 460 square miles, with an average depth of 10 feet and a maximum depth of 21 feet. Being a relatively shallow lake with a sandy bottom, it offers many little bays and sandy beaches throughout the St. Clair flats delta. Because of this, it also has one of the largest concentrations of pleasure boats in the world. On the north end of Lake St. Clair is Anchor Bay, which draws its name from the many schooners that anchored there in the mid-1800s. At the time, there were no aids to navigation, and travel at night into and through the St. Clair River was dangerous. The nearby community of Mount Clemens was known as “The Rose Capital of the United States” back in the early 1800s. Historically, Mount Clemens’ largest industry was its mineral baths, drawings celebrities from around the world. Counted among them were Clark Gable, Mae West, William Randolph Hearst, Babe Ruth, Jack Dempsey, and the Vanderbilts, who all vacationed in the city to rejuvinate in the baths. There’s a lot to get your attention on and around Lake St. Clair... and great history to boot. Hopefully, you’re planning to add Lake St. Clair and Mt. Clemens to your spring and summer must-visit destinations list! If you do hit Lake St. Clair this season, why not do it in the hottest new jet boat to grace the market: The Scarab 195 HO Impulse. This 19-foot hot rod is cutting edge on all fronts, including the price (nicely equipped at under $40,000). Lakeland Boating contributor Chris Caswell was the perfect choice to go out and run this “pocket rocket,” as he so dubbed it, for a great test and preview in this month’s issue... just in

time for the start of boating season. Read his fun and thorough assessment on page 26. With spring commissioning upon us, now’s the prefect time to think about prepping your boat for use. This month, new Lakeland contributor Gary Reich penned a great article on caring for marine canvas (p. 34), in which he details the best ways to preserve this key feature of your boat. Also, if you’re looking for some last-minute spruce-up ideas to make your boat’s exterior as shiny and new as the day you bought it, read Elizabeth Altick’s piece on page 30. Great advice from the Great Lakes’ boatyard pros! Too bad the groundhog saw his shadow, yet again, and an early spring is unlikely. Man, this guy’s gotta get out more... Until then, hang in there; spring’s just around the corner!

MBIA Awards Mayor’s Cup
great lakes news
On Thick Ice For the first time in 35 years, the Great Lakes are almost completely frozen over. This picture, taken February 9 at Chicago’s Montrose Harbor, shows the vast expanses of ice that cover the familiar Lake Michigan surface. As of February 13, it was estimated that 88.4 percent of the five big lakes were frozen over. The last time this much ice blanketed the Great Lakes was in 1996, when maximum ice coverage stretched over nearly 85 percent of the five bodies of water, according to the Midwest Regional Climate Center. The official record was set back in 1979, when ice enshrouded 94.7 percent of the lakes’ surfaces.
Sen. David Robertson and Rep. Andrea LaFontaine (pictured) were presented with the 2014 Mayor’s Cup Award by the Michigan Boating Industries Association (MBIA). The annual award, started in 1984, recognizes outstanding contributions to the recreational boating industry in Michigan and was presented during the 56th annual Detroit Boat Show back in February. Robertson and LaFontaine were honored by the MBIA Board of Directors for their leadership in sponsoring the Sales Tax on the Difference (STOD) for boats, which became law in Michigan as of November 2013. Fuel Rules Keep your gas or diesel engine running smooth.
A
ccording to BoatUS, one of the main reasons that boaters call for help on the water is because of mechanical breakdowns; and of those calls, the vast majority are attributable to fuel issues. Of course, some of these instances may be folks that have simply run out of gas. Often, however, the situation is a little more complicated — like problems with the fuel delivery system itself. Unless your boat has a small outboard engine hanging off the back, chances are you have a separate fuel tank on board containing either gasoline or diesel. In most cases, the fuel is pumped from the tank through a filter and then into the engine. “Pumped” is something of a misnomer here because the pump is often attached to the engine and actually sucks the fuel to the engine, rather than pushing it away. This may seem like semantics, but understanding this difference is important — especially with regard to diesel engines in particular, as any leak on the suction side of the pump will allow air into the system and will stop the engine from working.
Engines should have an easily accessible fuel filter, shown here in white (top). A drain in diesel filter bowls allows water and other contaminents to be drawn off (below, right). Long-range cruisers often have an impressive array of fuel filters (bottom left).
Hoses Getting fresh fuel to the engine is critical for both diesels and gas engines; old or dirty fuel will clog carburetors and injectors, cause miss-firing, block filters, and either make the engine stop or cause it to run at reduced power. To ensure proper operation, check your fuel hoses. Make sure hose clamps are tight. A leak will undoubtedly make the boat smell, or, worse yet, potentially cause a fire. On gas-powered boats, hoses should be marked as suitable to support delivery of ethanol fuels. Many hoses on older boats were installed before ethanol was of concern to the marine industry. These older hoses may look okay on the outside, but the ethanol contained in the fuel will actually eat away at the hose lining, causing small particles to get washed down with the fuel and eventually block critical system components. Hoses capable of transporting ethanol fuels will be marked A1 or A2, and these designations will actually be

printed on the hose’s exterior. I should add that ethanol also is incompatible with fiberglass fuel tanks, which are sometimes installed on older boats.
Filters Another ally in ensuring good quality fuel reaches the engine is good quality filtration — and changing filters according to the engine manufacturers’ recommendations is probably the biggest single thing that you can do to protect your engine from bad fuel. At a minimum, there should be at least two filters between the fuel tank and the motor. Normally this would include a primary filter, which removes dirt, water and other contaminates that are present in virtually every gallon of fuel; and a secondary, smaller filter, which exists to catch particles that made it through the primary filter. Filters, however, can only do so much. If fuel is excessively dirty, has a lot of water in it or is old, then it will not properly combust — even if it does make it to the engine. Ethanol gasoline is particularly prone to a phenomenon known as phase separation. Phase separation is the process by which gasoline loses something called its “cetane” rating. Some reports suggest that gasoline starts to break down in as few as 30 to 60 days. Adding a fuel stabilizer helps preserve fuel in the tank, and it’s probably wise to do so every time you fill up.
Diesel Much like gasoline, diesel fuel also is prone to degradation, primarily from algae and microscopic bugs that actually grow in the fuel. Algae and diesel bugs present as sludge, which gums up filters, fuel lines and injectors. As is the case with gasoline, there’s evidence that adding an additive fuel stabilizer with a biocide to your tank of diesel each time you fill up helps prevent this problem. Conventional wisdom says that tanks should either be completely full or completely empty when vessels are laid up for long periods. Tanks that are half full have a large air space contained within. During temperature changes and alterations in humidity levels, moisture-laden air will find its way into the tank and condense on the tank’s sides. This water, which is heavier than the fuel, sinks to the tank’s bottom, only to be picked up by the fuel delivery tube. Keeping the tank topped off means less available space for moisture to condense, thus forming less water. LB

lmost every time we sit down in front of a TV screen, we are relying, in one way or another, on satellite technology. Newscasts bring field reports from around the world together for a feature on the local evening news. Sports fans watch their favorite teams play each other, live, in real time, from Europe and Asia. We don’t give it a second thought. As more boaters, hikers and adventurers become aware of the opportunity to let family and friends know where they are when they’re “off the grid,” so to speak, they, too, are making use of the same satellite technology. Various “man overboard” (MOB) devices are coming onto the market, and many of these are what some refer to as “half satellites.” This basically means that the devices pick up a GPS reading from a satellite array, and once activated — either automatically or manually — when a person hits the water, that location is transmitted to surrounding vessels. But the transmission is generally made through an Automatic Identification System (AIS) on the marine VHF radio frequency; not via a signal back to a satellite for retransmission.
day,” or “Heading home for the afternoon.” It also has an option that allows e-mail and text messaging. As an additional safety measure, the unit features an SOS button for stand-alone emergency operation. An annual subscription service is required, as is a smartphone app. The Gen3 costs about $150, and the annual service costs depend on the nature of the transmission (plan on a starting price of about $150 per year).

Over the past couple of years, technology in the MOB field has advanced rapidly. In fact, just this past year (2013) the handheld satellite phone market saw a remarkable introduction: SPOT Global Phone by Globalstar (findmeSPOT. cOm) is a handheld sat phone that can be purchased for less than $500 and — through the same vendor — buyers can scoop up air time for as little as 25 cents per minute. This represents a substantial reduction in cost, of both hardware and air time, compared to what was available 12 months ago. In a clever bit of marketing, SPOT phones and accessories can be purchased at hundreds of outdoor outfitting stores and many electronics retail chains throughout the U.S. and Canada, making it an easy, affordable and accessible choice for boaters looking for peace of mind when it comes to safety at sea. This year, SPOT made yet another technological leap forward by introducing the Gen3. With this device, anyone with a smartphone can connect with a proprietary Satellite Messenger that turns the phone into a satellite communicator. The Gen3 allows a user to send messages and GPS coordinates from anywhere in the world. This latest technology lets a boater to type and send check-in and custom messages of 41 characters, like “Send emergency services. Need help!,” “Enjoying a nice sunny,
McMurdo (mcmurdOmArine.cOm), one of the big players in the AIS field, announced at the recent 2014 Miami International Boat Show that it’s bringing forward a plan to enhance collision avoidance and MOB response for U.S. boaters. The company will build on the success of (and further develop) its Smartfind S10 and S20 beacons. These units, which offer a 4-mile range and a signal that can be picked up by any AIS receiver-equipped vessel or aircraft, will operate continuously for 24 hours after activation. They send GPS coordinates updated every 60 seconds. The S10 is a handheld unit, while the S20 is equipped for attachment to a life jacket. Both devices are waterproof to 200 feet. McMurdo is part of the newly-formed McMurdo Group, which includes the McMurdo range of search and rescue products, Boatracs, Kannad and TechnoSciences Inc. These four companies provide distress beacons, tracking technology, satellite connectivity and monitoring for Airbus, Boeing, the British Royal Navy and other government agencies, and McMurdo is bringing that same technology to recreational boaters all over the globe. deLorme Several manufacturers offer hardware and software making use of satellite technology to allow communication with family and friends. The good news is that costs are reasonable and becoming less and less with each passing year. DeLorme (deLOrme.cOm) just announced a subscription plan for its inReach satellite messaging and GPS tracking device, which allows subscribers to pay on a monthly basis, only when they feel they might require the safety service. The plan will cost just $14.95 and includes features such as GPS tracking and an SOS button.

Diesel Doctor Diesel expert Roy Cohen of Superior Marine Service discusses the pros and cons of diesel versus gasoline engines. LB: What is the difference between diesel fuel and gasoline? Cohen: Gasoline is flammable and ignites at a much lower point than diesel. Diesel does not require ignition. Instead, it is compressed within the engine, which causes combustion, thus making it safer than gasoline. Both diesel and gasoline engines convert fuel into energy through a series of small explosions, or combustions. The major difference between diesel and gasoline is the way these explosions happen. In a gasoline engine, fuel is mixed with air, compressed by the pistons and ignited by sparks from spark plugs. In a diesel engine, however, the air is compressed first; then the fuel is injected. Air heats up when it’s compressed, and so the fuel ignites. Because gasoline vaporizes in the atmosphere at a low rate, the vapors are what actually create the conditions for a flammable source of fuel. It does not take much of an ignition source to ignite the vapors, such as static electricity, electric spark or an electric stove burner.
LB: Diesel engines are more expensive, but last longer. Why? Cohen: With a gasoline engine, it takes a higher rpm to create horsepower. Diesel engines generally run half the rpm to create the same horsepower. They are designed to last longer than gasoline engines. Here on the Great Lakes, I have seen many diesel engines that date from the 1930s and are still in operation today.
LB: Fuel economy depends on the quality of the fuel. How do you know if it’s good? Cohen: That’s a good question, because most people don’t know what to look for. Be nosy; look for fuel docks that sell lots of fuel. Examine the dispensing pump and the fuel hose/nozzle assembly to check for a filter. It should be a combination water- and particle-blocking filter that is not sun-faded or rusted. Another tip is to buy a small amount of fuel (at least a pint), put it in a jar and let it sit. If the contents separate into two separate entities, this means the fuel is contaminated.
LB: Why is diesel fuel more expensive? Cohen: In today’s petroleum market, there’s a larger global demand for diesel fuel than gasoline; therefore, they charge more for it. It’s the same old story of supply and demand — if you want it, then you pay more for it.
LB: Are diesel engines affected by ethanol regulations? Cohen: No, diesel fuel does not contain ethanol and biodiesel is allowable in marine diesel engines. Yanmar recommends a 5 percent blend. As far as Westerbeke, Beta, Universal and Volvo, I would suggest that the owner consult their engine builder for specific recommendations.
LB: Can diesel engines be used on smaller boats?
CONTACT Superior Marine Service 4405 East US Hwy 12 Michigan City, IN 46360 219-879-5636 superiormArineserviCe.Com
Cohen: The smallest boat application with a diesel engine that I have seen is 17 feet.
LB: Aren’t diesel engines noisy? Cohen: Since the 1960s, recreational engine compartments have been insulated with sound-deadening materials.
LB: What should an owner look for in a diesel engine? Cohen: Make sure the engine you choose can be serviced in the area where you will be doing most of your boating. I believe that a manufacturer’s strong dealer network is critical. Today’s engine technology requires properly trained technicians, with the proper tools and correct service manuals.
LB: Does diesel fuel need to be treated? Cohen: Since 2007, the EPA has decreed there should be no more sulfur used in the chemical makeup of diesel fuel. The sulfur was a fuel preservative. Therefore, diesel fuel that’s going to be stored needs a fuel preservative added by the consumer. There are many types of additives to choose from. LB Roy Cohen has been credited with cleaning more than two million gallons of diesel fuel. He is a Yanmar Gold Dealer and is affiliated with Westerbeke, Universal and Beta Marine. He has worked on engines for more than four decades.

chaparral 307 ssX I
Bringing sexy back.
like to make up descriptions for acronyms. For the Chaparral 307 SSX, the SSX must stand for “Super Sexy,” because Chaparral has done its homework with this ride. She’s bold, meant to look and go fast, and offers the creature comforts that will maximize your enjoyment on board. Remember that the 307 is a bowrider, even though she has high freeboard forward. Styling is contemporary, with supple curves softening the lines. The sweptback windshield and forward-arching radar arch add to her raciness, but also make installing a Bimini and curtains that much easier. There are so many options available on the 307 SSX that this could be considered a pseudo–custom boat. I mean, there are more than 40 engine models to choose from, including options from Volvo and Mercury, single or twins, etc. Helm features include a Garmin display mounted center dash with gauges flanking; waterproof rocker switches on either side of the leather-wrapped steering wheel; and throttle controls and joystick securely mounted at an ergonomically pleasing angle. The port dash opens up to a privacy room with VacuFlush toilet and holding tank, sink and pullout shower.

ou know you have a great boat when it wins the prestigious “European Powerboat of the Year Award” for yachts up to 45 feet. And that’s exactly what Jeanneau has with its latest entry into the market: The Velasco 43. Inspired by her larger brethren, the Velasco 43 is what’s known as a “pocket yacht,” sporting a stout exterior while maximizing comfort and style inside. Forward below deck there are two staterooms. The master is in the peak, with center berth, locker and private head with shower. A guest stateroom is located mid-ship, under the salon, with twin bunks, locker and shared access to the day head. What affords all of the space belowdecks is the fact that the Velasco’s Cummins diesel engines are mounted aft with V-drives, allowing Jeanneau to maximize interior living space.
Jeanneau 43 Velasco On the main deck, there’s a U-shaped galley to port right across from the lower helm to starboard. Split sink, electric cooktop and plenty of counter space help in meal prep. Starboard aft is the dinette, with U-shaped settee flanking a hi-lo foldout table. To port is a built-in lounger, comfortable if entertaining an overnight guest. Speaking of the helm, it has seating for two atop a bolstered bench. The center pod houses the leatherwrapped steering wheel, with display monitors for engines and plotters to either side. A great feature is the grab rail mounted just in front of the two rows of switches on the left helm. In a tossing sea, this will prevent someone from accidently crashing into the controls. The flybridge is generously appointed for a 44-foot yacht. You’ll first notice a port dining area with L-shaped settee and table. Forward of this is a bench seat that will accommodate two or more, with the fully-functional helm situated across. A food prep station is aft of the helm. Oh, and there’s a large sun pad located all the way aft, as well as another on the forward deck. The tapered hull of the Velasco 43 offers comfort and efficiency in most sea conditions and smooth, safe cruising, even at high speeds. Jeanneau’s Velasco 43 is a real winner. See for yourself. LB

rom the country that has given the world classic art, hot sport cars and exemplary cured foods comes another masterful creation: The Italian-built Riva Iseo. Riva, one of several brands under the Ferretti Group umbrella, continues to show the world that fun can come in smaller packages. This 27-foot open runabout is suited for the lake or sea, and will turn heads thanks to her go-fast-evenwhen-sitting-still styling and sumptuous finish. Even the rake of the tempered glass windshield gives that impression. Once underway hold on, as the Iseo, with single MerCruiser 377 hp engine and Bravo III sterndrive, skims the surface at a maximum speed of 41 knots. Or dial it back slightly and cruise at a comfortable 35 knots with a range of 180 miles. Optional Yanmar diesel packages are available. Of particular note is Riva’s generous use of mahogany
wood throughout, including on the foredeck. Riva coats the wood in 20 (yes, 20!) coats of clear varnish for that exceptional look and protection. Features abound on this boat. Custom-made Riva bow plate and anchor, stainless swim ladder, bow thruster, fridge, automatic Bimini top (just like a convertible automobile), custom Riva steering wheel and gauges, special fabrics for the upholstered seats, and more. The Iseo is built on an infused fiberglass hull and classed to Registro Italiano Navale (RINA) certification. Long and lean, the Iseo will rule the water with her 15-degree deadrise hull, complete with spray rails. In the cockpit, there’s seating for at least six, including the starboard side helm seat. An aft bench offers ample legroom. Riva touts that the Iseo is “modeled so the owner can ‘live’ his [or her] boat in any event.” To that end, the Iseo comes with an optional custom-made trailer for easy transportation. And it’s equipped with the Apple iPad platform that includes specially designed software for the viewing of owner’s manuals, weather forecasts, streaming radio, TV or playlists. Scarab. For some, the name will evoke images of deep-V ocean racing powerboats blasting their way to victories in rugged offshore races. For others, Scarab means Crockett and Tubbs chasing bad guys on “Miami Vice.” Either way, there’s a new generation that will know the Scarab name as a red-hot pocket rocket designed for wakeboarding and water toy thrills. Headlining the “new” Scarab is the 195, just two inches shy of 19-feet, but feeling two feet larger. Rec Boat Holdings, which acquired the Four Winns, Glastron and Wellcraft brands after Genmar folded, has spun the existing Wellcraft Scarabs into a new category labeled “Scarab Offshore.” But the real news is the 195 and its soon-to-debut larger sisters. They are jet powered. If you reel at the idea of a Scarab without a sterndrive, consider this: Our test run on Florida’s Indian River included a few 40-plus mph forays into water just 2 feet deep. Maybe less. Try that with a sterndrive, and just pray you have a discount with your propeller supplier. And that’s only part of the reason that jet boat sales were up an amazing 36 percent last year! The new Scarab 195 is focused on a young and vibrant market, so much so that you can get all your specs and details on Facebook. But, with MarineMax signing on to offer these new Scarabs at their 54 dealerships nationwide to replace the recently discontinued Sea Ray jet boats, expect to see them on a waterway near you soon.
Engineered for a new generation The Scarab 195 comes in three iterations, with upgrades in both power and goodies at different price levels. We tested the top-of-the-line 195 HO Impulse and, to use technical terms, it was a giggle. The boat is delivered as a turn-key package complete with trailer and, by the way, that trailer has a hinged tongue so the 195 can be stored in your garage. Standing next to the boat on the trailer, you can’t miss the ultra-cool hull graphics that match the bright interior colors. The base boat comes with a colored hull absent the spectacular graphics, but why be stodgy?

I took a look under the hull and discovered that Scarab has found a solution to the age-old problem of jet boat wander. Jets have no sterndrive or rudder to keep the boat tracking straight, so a side chop or breeze can keep you busy with the steering wheel. The Scarab answer was to create a centerline veed section that acts like the keel on a sailboat. Combined with fore-and-aft channels on each side that direct the water flow, I can report that this is a straight-tracking jet boat. Finishing off the bottom is a 20-degree transom deadrise and wide chine flats with steps to keep the boat running fast and free. Another benefit of this particular hull shape is that it delivers air-free water to the jet intake, which is essential for peak performance. At first glance, you’d say this is just another bowrider, albeit with some fancy graphics, but you’d be ohso-wrong. Christophe Lavigne, Scarab vice president of engineering, and his team came up with some answers to age-old problems. For example, there is wrap-around seating, which has enough (pardon my French) “butt-room” for five people. But where do you put ten legs in a conventional boat? They just get all tangled up. The 195, however, has notches in the corners of the settee so that those extra legs have a place to go. Same in the bowrider area: Your friends can lounge comfortably all around the seating. A table bracket in the aft cockpit allows for picnics, and the table top has a dedicated storage area. Which brings us to storage: It’s huge! The 195 is built like most fiberglass boats, starting with the hull mold. Then an inner liner is dropped into place to add strength, but this is designed to include all the storage bins. The result is that each cavernous storage area — under all the seats and even inside the helm and companion consoles — is clean and smooth. There’s even a dedicated locker for an ice chest convenient to both bow and stern areas. And skiers and wakeboarders will find ample stowage for their boards under the cockpit sole. At the stern, an extra-wide swim platform makes sense because the 195 is a boat designed for playing
in the water. And, since a jet boat doesn’t have the Cuisinart blades of a propeller, kids can play on and off the platform, even with the boat moving. The pull-out swim ladder is not just for water use, but allows easy boarding when the boat is on the trailer, too. I had to admire the rear seating for more than just the leg notches. The backrests across the transom have more moves than a Transformer movie. In normal position, you have comfortable backrests for forward-facing guests. Scarab calls this the Versa-Lounge and, for once, a cutesy name actually works. Flip the center backrest down and you have a step-through to and from the swim platform, or an elbow rest for guests. All three backrests also tilt forward, making three-across seating when guests want to face aft. And, finally, the three backrests hinge to create a wide pad for sunning. The Impulse gets an anodized aluminum wakeboard tower (optional on the lower models) and, while I’m one who thinks wakeboard towers look like handles on a paint bucket, this one is actually good looking. It rakes forward to put the tow point directly over the center of the boat, so you can turn the boat without having a wakeboarder drag the stern around. It includes a slick Bimini top to keep your beak from burning and two humongous speakers (optional) so anyone being towed can still hear the tunes. In fact, all the boats come with stereo systems, with the upper models getting remote controls at both the helm and transom. Our Impulse had a Sony deck with a low-drain amplifier so you won’t empty the batteries if you’re sitting on a beach. It also had no less than seven speakers, with the cockpit speakers backlit to glow at night (part of the Premium sound package). Yowza!
All smiles on the water Power for the 195 is the Rotax low-profile engine, which is tucked under the rear seats. Access is outstanding, since the entire seating area hinges upward on gas lifts. The battery is tucked to port and, with closed-system cooling, all the plumbing is greatly simplified. For those with a technical bent, the Rotax 4-TEC 1503 is an inline three-banger with 12 valves and a
fly-by-wire control system that makes some of the other cleverness in the Scarab 195 possible. The engine is supercharged (rather than turbocharged like other jet drives), so it produces power when you hit the throttle, as opposed to waiting for the turbo to spool up. Two engine sizes are offered by Scarab, with the base 195 getting 200 hp, while the middle version (called the 195 HO) and the Impulse top out at 250 hp. All run happily on regular gas. Enough with the techie stuff — let’s run this little puppy! The boat and trailer are mated perfectly and can be launched singlehanded without effort. Once in the water, it’s hard to stop grinning on this boat. Throttle response is instantaneous, and zero-tolaughter speeds are in seconds. It spins on a dime and gives a nickel change; oh, and tracks straight when you choose. We had a breeze come up during our test, building enough chop that many boats would be wet, but the 195 blew through the seas with aplomb and nary a drop of spray. And it was quiet enough for conversation, even flat out. Putting the throttle down from a dead stop, the bow barely rises and the skipper never loses sight of the horizon. Top speed with two of us aboard and a full tank of fuel was somewhere above 45 mph and, as I mentioned earlier, some of this was in water less than 24 inches deep. The Impulse version gets a truly sophisticated control system for the throttle that seems miraculous. There’s a docking mode that slows the throttle response so even your kids won’t bang the dock. A ski mode allows you several settings for your wakeboarders from fast out of the water to more gentle on their arms. An eco-setting picks your speed for you to give the best fuel economy, which, in our case, was around 25 mph. And, like your car, there’s cruise control to maintain your speed. Docking, ski and eco modes are optional, while cruise control comes standard. It may not be the Scarab you remember, but this is definitely a Scarab you won’t forget. Put the Scarab 195 on your short list for a test run, and then try to stop grinning. LB

OUTSIDE REVIVAL finishes. In most cases, that would be a mistake, according Douglas Bergmann, owner of Bergmann Marine in Charlevoix, Michigan (bergmannmarine.com). Not only is it costly, it’s impractical. Show boats, like classic cars, are meant to be seen, not driven. “It would be like putting a glass finish on hardwood floors in a house with four dogs,” he says. “You don’t want a highly polished finish on a boat that is used to take grandkids waterskiing. Also, the delicate surfaces are susceptible to sun damage.” Bottom line: Most people can’t tell the difference between a highly expensive treatment of a boat’s exterior and upgrades that don’t hit the pocketbook quite as hard.
Shine and pop There are relatively low-priced ways to make a vessel shine, if you practice preventive maintenance. “Varnish is one of those things that, if done regularly, is not too costly, because you only have to do a few coats at a time,” says David Lesh, production manager of Walstrom Marine, headquartered in Harbor Springs, Michigan (walstrom.com). “But if you let it get to the point where it’s peeling, the project becomes very labor intensive.” For example, on a 1986 Grand Banks 42 that Walstrom Marine worked on (pictured at left), “the rails were peeling by the end of summer, which required us to strip them down,” says Lesh. “If done the previous year, we could have probably gotten away with just sanding and recoating. “After stripping,” he continues, “we applied eight coats of varnish on the rails, with light sanding between coats. The transom was in good enough shape that we simply had to

sand it, build up the bare spots with a few coats, and finish it with three top coats. We then wet-sanded and buffed it. “The window frames were sanded down, primed and painted with four full coats of highly durable DuPont paint,” Lesh goes on to explain. These were color-matched to the gel coat. Walstrom also installed a new windlass, bow thruster, put a drain in the keel, replaced a rotten section of deck below the mast, and did a full mechanical inspection. “The owner is very happy with the results,” he says. Echoing Lesh’s maintenance philosophy, Jack Hall, paint supervisor at Manitowoc Marina in Manitowoc, Wisconsin (manitowoc-marina.com), recommends staying on top of nicks and other blemishes. A product he particularly likes is Perfection Plus varnish from Interlux. “It costs about twice that of other varnishes, but since it only needs to be applied every two years you save on labor, which is the main expense,” he explains. Vigilant about costs, Scott Strang, general manager of CenterPointe Yacht Services in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, (centerpointeservice.com), says, “We always present our customers with options that fit their boating budget when it comes to freshening up the way a boat looks. We encourage our customers to include in their budget
required and prudent maintenance and some annual upgrades to keep their boat in like-new condition. “In addition to a professional compounding and wax job, one of the things that can really make a boat ‘pop’ is to revamp the graphics,” Strang continues. “A subtle change in colors and fonts can make the boat look younger and even more sporty. We take pictures of the boat and do a digital rendering of the proposed new graphics, so the client can have input and get a feel for what their vessel will look like when it’s done.” Another way to improve the appeal of your boat (also with color in mind) is to have new carpet installed. Jeremy Goldstein of Custom Marine in Sandusky, Ohio (custommarine.biz) tackled such a project on a mid-1990s bass boat (pictured at left). While relatively well cared for over the years, Goldstein explains, the boat was looking a bit run down — though the exterior finish and graphics were still in excellent condition considering the boat’s age. “The old, worn out carpet had done its job, but now smelled pretty foul and was detracting from the boat’s overall sharp appearance,” he maintains.

“A nice, high-quality, marine-grade, 30-ounce carpet was installed to complement the boat’s exterior colors. In the process of cleaning all the normally hard-to-scrub gelcoat that surrounds the carped areas, we cleaned and polished the entire boat prior to the new carpet install to give it a crisp, like-new look. In addition, all of the stainless hardware was removed and polished to look like the day the boat first rolled out of the showroom. “Now the owner has a boat to be proud of. And he didn’t have to wait long for results; once new carpet arrived, the whole job was completed in just four days.”

For a different exterior appeal, sometimes it’s wise to go naked, says Strang. “We have a lot of customers with teak on their boat that they are tired of varnishing,” he explains. If that’s the case, he says, “No problem. Just go bare. Bare teak is great under foot and can be easily maintained to look rich and pleasing. We love a product called Te-Ka, available at most all marine chandlers, that does a great job of cleaning and brightening teak decking without making it slippery (see photos at right). “For customers that have all fiberglass decking and swim platforms,” Strang continues, “nothing makes a boat look more warm and pleasing than adding either teak decking, synthetic PVC look-alike teak or the wonderful EVA foam products from companies like SeaDek. These new products are soft and soothing to walk on, eye-catching, easy to install and add to the joy of boating, not to mention the resale value.” Jon Gafill, service writer for Irish Boat Shop in Harbor Springs and Charlevoix, Michigan, (irishboatshop.com) also is a big fan of plastic decking. “There are lots of patterns to choose from and it’s easy to put down with self-adhesive backing. It gives you an attractive, soft floor.” Even a small area of new decking can make a big difference, according Custom Marine’s Goldstein. He installed teak inserts on a Tiara swim platform to give it that much more “pizzazz.” “Everyone has at one point or another seen a 31 Tiara out and about, as it’s one of the company’s most successful models ever produced,” says Goldstein. “This particular boat was in great condition, but the owner wanted to do something to set his apart from the pack. We replaced the white plastic inserts on the swim platform with teak ones, which gave it a warmer, richer look (see photos at left). It’s just enough wood to add some class without adding much in the way of maintenance.”

While refinishing an entire boat can be expensive, the cost for an owner to maintain a new finish is often far less than it is to baby an original 10-, 20- or 30-year-old finish. Just think: All that constant buffing and waxing, not to mention the extra time it takes to scrub out those stubborn black streaks every season. A refinished boat will be easier to maintain and gives the owner a renewed pride of ownership. “If maintained appropriately, a boat repainted with high-quality, multi-part urethanes should last at least 10 years,” says Goldstein. “New gelcoat will easily last double that time if taken care of properly.” LB
Bergmann Marine had an exterior renovation project that required extensive refinishing. A 1986 37-foot Lord Nelson tug sat unattended for several years. Physically sound, it was in cosmetic disrepair. She was repainted using Awlgrip products. “It is the best on the market,” Bergmann says of Awlgrip. “It takes more prep work because you need to start with no blemishes, but you get a better finish.” Often it’s a boat’s exterior finish that stands in the way of many owners continuing a love affair with their older boats. Like Bergmann’s tug, Custom Marine tackled an extensive refinishing project on a 1986 18-foot bowrider (pictured at right). “For starters, this boat needed several stress cracks repaired, most of which were caused by the original canvas installer who didn’t drill large enough pilot holes for the boat’s snaps, creating spider web-like cracks originating at the fasteners,” Custom Marine’s Goldstein explains. “Once all the fiberglass was repaired, the whole boat was completely faired out (sanded smooth) to better-than-new condition before getting refinished.” Goldstein separated the boat’s deck from the hull and repainted with DuPont acrylic urethane paint. The hull itself was flipped over for refinishing. This, he says, gave the crew at Custom Marine better working conditions to refinish not only the hull sides, but also the bottom. “The owner didn’t want traditional bottom paint; instead, he wanted the boat to look like all boats do when they’re fresh out of the factory mold,” Goldstein explains. “Since the acrylic urethane paint is not designed for use under water, the bottom and hull sides were painstakingly re-gelcoated. The boat was then flipped back over and mated back to its deck.”

Careful Care
Tips from the pros for making your canvas last.
“R
aise the canvas” is what the old sailors used to say when the time came to set sail on the square-riggers and gaff-rigged sailboats of days gone by. Today, that’s the call of recreational boaters who set out in droves every spring to reinstall their enclosures, tops and sail covers as they get ready for summer fun and relaxation on the water. Unfortunately, though, more than a few boat owners can be in the proverbial dark when it comes to caring for the canvas on their boats. With that in mind, I enlisted the help of some canvas pros to help demystify the steps we should take to keep our canvas and clear plastic enclosures lasting for years to come. Before the 1930s, canvas was generally a heavy, rough material made of cotton or other natural fibers, and oils and waxes were sometimes added to enhance the material’s water resistance. But since canvas was made of natural fibers, it had the tendency to mildew, break down and eventually take on the aroma of a smelly dog — not exactly conducive to a relaxing day on the water. Today, modern, high-tech acrylic canvas materials are waterproof, ultraviolet resistant and can last more than a decade if cared for properly. Now, when someone says “canvas,” they are generally referring to the colored boat enclosures and covers that keep us dry; the T-tops that stop the sun from beating a hole into our heads; or the fabrics that cover up and protect our woodwork or sails. There are Bimini tops, T-tops on center-console boats and enclosures for flybridges (in addition to full boat covers that protect our boats while not in use). You’ve likely heard the brand name “Sunbrella” used when folks talk about their canvas. Sunbrella is a trade name for an extensive line of acrylic fabrics manufactured by Glen Raven. Another component of marine canvas work are the panels of clear plastic (often referred to as “Eisenglass” or “Strataglass”) that make up the enclosures and spray guards around cockpits or on flying bridges on powerboats. Phew! OK, now that we’ve got the nomenclature out of the way, lets get down to the business of installing and maintaining all of this pricey gear.
Spring has sprung If you removed and properly stored all of your canvas work when you laid up your boat last fall (and we hope you did, but if you didn’t see our winter layup tips at the end of this article), the temptation to reinstall it on your boat will certainly peak when that first sunny, 50- to 60-degree weekend
A complex installation of both canvas and clear plastic panels (upper left) requires great care. Never use Windex or ammonia-based cleaners on clear plastics such as Eisenglass or Strataglass; use good quality plastic cleaner/ polish like the ones pictured at left. Also use protectants like Sunbrella’s 303 to help repel dirt and other contaminants from your canvas. The pros recommend treating canvas at least once a year. Also, inspect zippers and apply a zipper lube before installing your canvas in the spring (left).

comes around. But “not so fast,” says Carie Bores, one of the canvas gurus we pinged for this story. Bores is the sales and customer service director for custom canvas fabricator Great Lakes Boat Tops in Vonore, Tennessee. “One thing boat owners often do that can cause damage to their canvas is attempting to install it when the outside temperature is less than 65 degrees,” she explains. “Since acrylic marine canvas doesn’t really stretch much below that temperature, trying to force it to fit by engaging in a tug of war can result in fabric tears, seam failures and snaps and zippers pulling out. You’d be surprised how many rip and snap repairs we do in those first few weeks of warmer weather when it’s still a bit too cold for installing canvas. A better bet is to do all of your other spring commissioning chores and then save the canvas for last, at temperatures above 65 degrees. “And remember to lube all of your zippers and snaps with a lube specifically designed for them. You can find tubes of good zipper and snap lube at any marine store,” Bores adds.

Five Tips From the Pros for Long Canvas Life n Never use ammonia-based cleaners such as Windex on your clear plastic (Eisenglass or Strataglass) enclosures. Use a clear plastic cleaner/polish designed specifically for these materials. Also, never fold clear plastics; always roll or store flat. n Lubricate zippers and snaps at least once a year and invest in a snap-puller tool to avoid rips and tears where snaps are installed. n Keep your canvas clean by rinsing it with fresh water often and giving it a good scrub with a mild soap as needed and before laying up for the winter. Dirt and other debris attract mold and mildew, reducing canvas life. n Never, ever, ever wash your canvas in any type of washing machine, even those designed for large articles. Putting marine canvas in a clothes dryer is recipe for certain disaster, too. n Never attempt to force fit canvas in cold temperatures. Wait until outside temps reach at least 65 degrees before installing back on the boat. — G.R.

Once you’ve taken your time and properly fitted all of your canvas work, maintaining it is fairly straightforward and easy. “Try to rinse off any dirt or debris as soon as you see it collect on your canvas,” urges Bores. “Marine canvas is acrylic, so mold and mildew do not grow on the fabric itself. But if dirt or other debris is present on top of the canvas, mold and mildew can and will attach and grow there.” She adds, “I also recommend giving all of your canvas
Bird droppings, dirt and other debris become a breeding ground for mold and mildew. Keeping your canvas clean promotes long life.
a mid-season wash with a light soapy solution, say, sometime in June or July, and then again before pulling it off for the season at layup time. Lastly, I like treating canvas with 303 Protectant at least once or twice a year; it helps repel dirt and debris.” But what’s a safe solution for doing that cleaning? I asked Sunbrella Fabrics marine market manager Bill McDaniel to give us some recipes for the proper cleaning solutions we should use on our Sunbrella canvas. “A solution made with Dawn dish soap or Woolite is best for general cleaning,” says McDaniel.
Use special care when snapping or unsnapping canvas. Properly lubricating snaps each season can help prevent rips and tears caused by over-forcing them during removal. “Just apply it with a soft bristle brush, allow it to soak in, and then rinse it off thoroughly. If you have any mold or mildew growth, we recommend the following cleaning brew: A solution of one cup bleach and 1/4-cup of mild soap per gallon of clean water. Scrub it in with a light bristle brush, allow it to soak in for 15 minutes and then rinse. But remember that this bleach solution can stain or spot other materials nearby, so use caution when using it on canvas that is installed on your boat. After an especially vigorous cleaning, apply 303 Hi-Tech Fabric Guard according to the directions to restore water repellancy.” As an added precaution, McDaniel says, “Be sure to check with your marina regarding any environmental regulations as they relate to the cleaning process.”
I can see clearly now Besides that acrylic canvas work, many boats also have canvas with clear plastic panels and “windows” sewn in (flybridge and cockpit enclosures are a good example). You may have heard the terms “Eisenglass” or “Strataglass” used for these clear plastics, and these materials come with their own special care and installation recommendations.

Canvas Care Checklist n Fall/Winter: Thoroughly clean all canvas using a mild detergent and soft bristle brush and allow to dry completely. Apply protectant and store for the winter in a clean, dry location. Store any canvas panels with clear plastics such as Eisenglass or Strataglass flat against each other, and with towels (or another buffer, such as tissue paper or craft paper) sandwiched in between to prevent them contacting each other.
This is a no-no. The pros recommend removing your canvas each winter and using a purpose-built cover or shrink wrap. Snow, ice and extended sun exposure can shorten the lifespan of canvas. First, make sure that you don’t drag any of your plastic panels across any other surfaces if you can avoid it; they scratch easily. But once you’ve carefully put them up, maintenance is just about as straightforward and easy as your canvas… as long as you use the right cleaners and protectants. “The biggest mistake people make when caring for their clear plastic is using window cleaners such as Windex, or other ammonia-based cleaners,” Bores explains. “Those cleaners might do a good job getting the dirt off, but the ammonia reacts with the polymers in the plastic, and that can cause the plastic to cloud up.” Instead of Windex, Bores recommends using a polish/ cleaner specifically designed for clear plastic, such as 210 Plastic Cleaner/Polish or Mequiar’s Plastic Cleaner.
Winter blues It’s not much fun to think about it now, but sometime in October or November, that sad day will come when it’s time to winterize the boat and call it a season. While some folks leave their canvas and clear plastic enclosures up all winter to pull double duty as boat covers, the pros agree that the better move is removing these items and storing them below (or better, at home). Before you pull the canvas and clear plastic panels off your boat, first give all your canvas a good wash. Sunbrella recommends wetting the canvas down, applying a soapy water solution (use the recipe we mentioned above), brushing it in with a soft bristle brush, and then letting it soak for a few minutes before rinsing it off with fresh water. Next, once everything has dried thoroughly (key word here is thoroughly), give it all a shot of protectant (like the 303 Protectant we
n Spring Commissioning: Lubricate all snaps, zippers and other fasteners with an appropriate snap and zipper lubricant (available at almost any marine store). You also can use wax (in a pinch). Clean Eisenglass, Starataglass or other clear enclosure plastics with a cleaner/polish designed for clear plastics. Do not use Windex. n Mid-Season: Wash all canvas using a soft bristle brush with a mild, nondetergent soap such as Dreft, Woolite, Dawn or other mild cleaner designed for canvas. Ammonia-based or heavy detergent cleaners are a no-no. n Monthly: Thoroughly rinse all your canvas by spraying it down with clean, fresh water to remove dirt, salt, bird droppings or any other contaminants. Lubricate any stubborn snaps or zippers with an appropriate lube. — G.R.
mentioned earlier in this story). Once that’s done, you’ll want to clean and polish your clear plastics with an appropriate cleaner/polish (remember, no Windex!). Feel free to fold or roll up your canvas as you store it, but rolling it will leave fewer creases to contend with come spring. While many clear plastic enclosure panels can be rolled up (never fold them!), almost all manufacturers recommend storing them flat, with some sort of fabric (such as an old bath towel) placed between each layer, so that the plastic panels do not contact each other. You also can use craft paper (you can get it in rolls at the hardware store) as an alternative. Some plastic panels (such as Strataglass) can’t be rolled at all, because they are too stiff. If you’re in doubt as to what will work best for your particular situation, give a shout to your canvas maker to find out the best route. So there you go: The fully demystified care and feeding of your canvas and clear plastic enclosures. I think what surprised me most on my quest for long-lasting canvas answers was how well these materials hold up with exposure to brutal sun and punishing weather conditions. “Cared for properly, canvas can last 10 to 15 years, even in tropical climes,” Bores maintains. Not a bad return on investment for a little tender loving care. LB

located about 6 miles north of Detroit between Michigan and Ontario, Canada, is a vital link in the largest freshwater system on the planet. As French explorer Rene-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de la Salle discovered when he first sailed into the lake on August 12, 1679 — the feast day of Sainte Claire of Assisi — it connects Lake Erie to the south via the Detroit River, and the St. Clair River and Lake Huron to the north. He named the body of water Lac Sainte Claire. At 26 miles long and 24 miles wide, Lake St. Clair covers 430 square miles, but is tiny compared to the five massive Great Lakes in the chain that stretches from the St. Lawrence Seaway to Lake Superior. And it’s shallow, averaging just 10 feet deep with a maximum depth of 21 feet plus a dredged shipping channel for the 3,000 freighter passages it sees each season. As hardworking as it is, Lake St. Clair’s combination of wide-open water and islands, channels, rivers and protected bays along its 160 miles of shoreline makes it a playground for watercraft of all kinds, with more than 150,000 pleasure boats registered in the immediate area on the U.S. side of the lake. Anglers like its perch, walleye, pike, bluegill, muskie and bass: Lake St. Clair produces a third of the Great Lakes’ sportfishing catch each year, and in 2013 Bassmasters named it the number one smallmouth bass fishing lake in the world. To experience some unforgettable fishing thrills and excitement, book a charter out of St. Clair Shores with Mr. Muskie Charters. Brad Simmons of the Lake St. Clair Tourism Initiative, the non-profit organization behind the promotional and informational website tourlakestclair.org, notes that the area has “the highest concentration of nautical businesses on Lake St. Clair within a one-mile stretch.” Donna Flaherty, president of the Nautical Mile business organization and owner of Gifts Afloat, points to a packed calendar of special events, from the July 18-20 Venetian Festival to classic car and boat shows, fishing derbies, and chamber music concerts at the lovely Wahby Park as additional reasons to visit the community. Free brochures and the website nauticalmile.org carry details on things to do in the district. It’s all an effort to encourage boaters — especially those traveling between the Great Lakes — to stop and stay a while. “We want to make this a destination,” says Leslie Leitch, a member of the Nautical Mile Yacht Club board. “People bypass the area because they stay in the shipping channel, but from here you’re halfway to Lake Erie, halfway to Lake Huron. You can spend the night here, and the Great Lakes are two to three hours away in either direction.” He adds that the Nautical Mile makes a good base for exploring the nearby sights along the shoreline, depending on the watercraft; it’s a 45-minute or an hour’s cruise south to downtown Detroit and north to Lake St. Clair Metro Park.
Bounty of boating access The municipal Lac Ste. Claire Harbor and Blossom Heath Harbor, as well as seven additional area marinas, offer transient wells along the Nautical Mile. The massive, 800-well Jefferson Beach Marina has 50 full-service slips for visitors with boats up to 100 feet, plus boat sales and service. Jefferson Beach Yacht Sales (JBYS) has been here since 1972. Tin Fish restaurant, with its waterfront deck dining and boat docking, and numerous charter fishing operations also are onsite. Emerald City Harbor, with more than 500 slips, welcomes transients by reservation and is home to Brownies on the Lake, a popular restaurant and bar that offers boat docking. Colony Marine and Miller Marine also are located on the Nautical Mile. Harbor 9 Marina can accommodate transient boats and is the scene of a summertime concert series and special events hosted by the Nautical Mile Yacht Club, whose headquarters are on premises at Captain Jack’s Lakefront Bar & Grill. That two-story building was a boathouse in the 1920s and during Prohibition received illegal hooch from Canada, just across the lake. The casual restaurant makes the most of the rum-running theme built around an elaborate tale of the legendary (and fictional) liquor importer, Captain Jack. In season a free water taxi ferries folks between lakeside hangouts. Visitors also can enjoy special events like the Pirate Island Festival (August 2) and free live music on Saturdays in June. Mike’s Marine Supply, a short stroll from the waterfront, is a onestop-shop for all your boating needs.

Escape to Mount Clemens
AquaPalooza at MacRay Harbor
Mount Clemens River Concert
Heading north from the Nautical Mile is Lake St. Clair Metropark, a sprawling recreation area with a marina and wells that can handle boats up to 40 feet. The park has a swimming pool and beach, bike path, playground, par-3 golf course, nature center, and restored coastal marsh area that’s a habitat for native birds, reptiles and amphibians. Just beyond the Metropark the Clinton River joins Lake St. Clair. Near the river’s mouth is Poor Man’s Beach, a lovely sandy anchorage that is often host to AquaPalooza, the largest on-water concert held on Lake St. Clair and most likely in the entire region. Site sponsors include Colony Marine, Belle Maer Harbor and MacRay Harbor. The river’s winding path leads inland to the city of Mount Clemens, just a short, 9-mile cruise. According to Gerry Santoro, program manager, Land and Water Resources, Macomb County, “The Clinton River, also known as ‘Boat Town,’ offers a real maritime feel and escape from the urban setting. There are many, many business along the river.” Mount Clemens was established in 1818 by Christian Clemens. This riverfront community is one of the oldest cities in Michigan. For nearly a century, Mount Clemens was known throughout the world as a health spa, with its numerous mineral springs and bathhouses. The last of the mineral baths closed in 1974, but the Bath City Bistro pays tribute to that aspect of the city’s history while serving food, beverages and feather bowling, a Belgian sport played on an indoor alley. Beginning in 1880 and for two decades after World War I, there were 10 major rose growers in the area, giving Mount Clemens the distinction of being “The Rose Capital of the United States.” Mount Clemens also became home to the Hacker Boat Company in 1920, when its founder, John Hacker, moved the company’s home base from Detroit. Hacker is widely considered the father of the modern American runabout. The company rebounded from the Depression with its popular “Utility” Hacker-Craft runabouts, and in 1935 the 17-foot Utility could be purchased for $975. The company relocated to northern New York in the 1970s and continues to produce hand-built mahogany classics. This historic downtown, with its brick-paved streets, offers an abundance of entertainment options. You will find dining, nightlife, outdoor cafés, shops and boutiques, as well as waterfront parks and boardwalks. The city plays host to many events and festivals, including a riverfront concert series that runs throughout the summer. Visitors and residents alike also enjoy Mount Clemens’ Anton Art Center, farmer’s market, classic car show (June 7), art fair (June 7-8) and Independence Day Celebration (June 27). Most attractions are within walking distance of the municipal marina, including this year’s outdoor exhibition of a dozen reproductions of masterpieces from the Detroit Institute of Arts’ “Inside/Out” program, running August through October. Clinton River Cruises leave Mount Clemens and tour the Clinton River and Anchor Bay area of Lake St. Clair. Just south of Anchor Bay are two of Michigan’s finest marinas: Belle Maer Harbor and MacRay Harbor. Beyond Anchor Bay, well, as Simmons says, “One of the wonderful things about Lake St. Clair is that everything is close. The ports are much closer to each other and easier to get to than you’ll find elsewhere on the Great Lakes.” And that’s something boaters on Lake St. Clair can take to heart. LB

niquely situated in the center of Johnson’s Island just off the coast of the Marblehead Peninsula in Ohio’s Sandusky Bay, this home boasts something a bit unexpected given its position: Sixty feet of water frontage and a dock at the bottom of the property. “There aren’t many places you can take a boat to the center of an island with cliffs and homes all around you,” says Sharon Woodson, listing agent for the property. “It’s very unique.” Perched high on a cliff, the property enjoys perhaps the best views found on Johnson’s Island, particularly from the octagonal widow’s watch on the third floor. “You can sit up there and look out the windows; see over to Cedar Point, the lake and the bay,” Woodson says. Built in 2003 with energy efficiency in mind, the home features solar panels that power one of the home’s two hot water tanks. The back of the home’s southern exposure, combined with its impressive insulation, means that in winter, when the sun is shining, the house will warm up without the furnace operating.

Because of the way the home was built, there are no rafters — just decorative beams. “It’s a very open feel,” Woodson says. “There are vaulted ceilings throughout on the second floor, and even the first floor has all 10-foot ceilings.” The finishes throughout the three-bedroom, three-bath house are top of the line, from the maple woodwork (including 8-foot solid maple doors) and travertine floors to the granite countertops and well thought out lighting. The master suite boasts a Jacuzzi tub and two bonus rooms. Outside, the private wooded lot includes a tandem four-car garage with high ceilings (perfect for boat storage), a hot tub and spiral stairs that lead from the home down to the 50-foot dock. The home is livable year round, and there’s certainly no lack of things to do in the area. Johnson’s Island is just a mile from the Marblehead Peninsula via causeway. By water, you can get to Put-in-Bay and Kelleys Island and all that these areas have to offer in roughly 20 minutes in a go-fast boat. “It’s all in your backyard here,” Woodson says. LB

Bergmann Marine Family–owned Charlevoix boatyard offers experience and excellence.

S
ituated less than a mile from the northwest tip of Lake Charlevoix, Bergmann Marine of Charlevoix, Michigan offers everything boaters need in terms of service and storage. And it’s all backed by decades of experience. “Since the early 1950s, our family has managed or owned a marina in Charlevoix,” says Douglas Bergmann, partner/ manager of Bergmann Marine, which has been family-owned and -operated for more than 20 years. “We didn’t technically have our name on a building until the 1990s, but we’ve always been involved in boating.” That’s true not only for the Bergmann family, but for the employees that have worked with and for them over the years. “For a lot of our employees, their first job was working on boats when they were 14,” he says. “There have been so many technology changes, but the principles are the same.” The boatyard provides a wide range of fiberglass, woodworking and mechanical services, from complete restoration and custom woodworking to diesel and gas engine repair. “We don’t look at any project as being too big or too small,

whether it’s a complete electronics installation, a big paint job or fixing a broken Jet Ski,” Bergmann says. “We’re about providing quality service to customers, whatever they may need.” Even more impressive is Bergmann’s mobile service offering, a huge convenience for boaters. “When the boats are in the water, we’ll go to the boats,” he says. Bergmann Marine’s storage space has grown over the years to accommodate demand. They added another 20,000 square feet of indoor heated storage in 2013, bringing their total indoor heated storage up to between 90,000 and 100,000 square feet. They offer 40,000 square feet of cold storage, too. Spring and early summer is typically the busiest time for them, as they work hard to get everyone’s boats ready for the season, but they are open year round for both storage and service. Bergmann also serves as a boat broker, negotiating on the behalf of owners to get fair market value for their used boats. “Our biggest asset is the longevity of our quality work force — our family and all of our employees,” Bergmann concludes. “That’s what ultimately makes the difference.” LB

above the waterline | by Dave Wallace
Boating You Can Handle Signs call attention to challenges of boating in the Great Lakes.
T
he challenge of keeping my head above the waterline — and ahead of my publishing deadlines — involves brainstorming future column topics, sometimes generated from the unlikeliest of sources. A perfect example of this occurred while cruising a busy boulevard on a ho-hum day of errand running. While out and about, I passed a familiar restaurant with a huge sign out in the parking lot that read “All the wings you can handle!” As a former marketing guy, I was impressed by the word choice. Less creative restaurants would probably offer “All the wings you can eat!,” which is an overused cliché by just about everyone in the food business. By swapping “eat” with “handle,” this restaurant repositioned its offer from an open invitation to a personal challenge. I was not particularly hungry for wings that day, but I was eager for inspiration. With my mind in column-topic-searching mode, I imagined the marine version of that sign reading “All the boating you can handle!” It would be one of those sophisticated electric signs, with the option of a moving message crawling endlessly across the lower half of the screen. You’d find it posted at the entrance to your marina, programmed to display a sequence of boating options designed to help you plan your weekend agenda, or perhaps test your courage and seamanship. Messages would be updated daily to help you make your choice: Cast off and head out, or settle back with your beverage of choice in the calm comfort of your marina. A typical message might greet you with water and weather conditions: “Three- to 6-foot head seas from the North. A great day for taking on spray, if you can handle it!” Or, the message could be destination-specific. For example: “Mac Island Municipal sold out, but anchorages still open if you can handle the dinghy ride to shore and back.” Even more to the point, messages could be event-specific, as in: “Wooden boat show at Manistique, if you can handle the distance.” Assuming that not every weekend would involve dramatic happenings or challenging weather conditions, the signage could be useful for announcing more regular events, such as:
Great Lakes boaters love a good challenge!

“Annual marina picnic scheduled for next Sunday. Everyone welcome, if they can handle bringing a dish to pass.” Once installed, the sign would likewise provide a seasonal heads up. “The marina office and ship’s store will be closed as of October 1, but winter haul out service will be active until November 1 for slip holders who can handle the cold and loneliness of fall boating.” Hey, if a land-locked restaurant can make the “handling” of wings sound like a macho rise to the occasion, then transferring this concept to the far more technically challenging aspects of Great Lakes boating takes it to a whole new level… or should I say “depth?” Meanwhile, the restaurant that sparked this little idea of mine has closed, its sign no longer challenging me from the parking lot. I guess our wing eaters just couldn’t handle the pressure! LB
