Marketing to Millennials

Sell the experience.

s a magazine editor who happens to be a millennial, I often get asked how the industry can appeal to my generation and get them involved in boating. Many of my peers, myself included, are battling a financially crippling burden, otherwise known as student loans. While we may not be financially ready to buy a boat, our generation loves to get outdoors; we live for experiences. My goal is to encourage millennials to Kate kayaking on Lake Tahoe get on the water in any way, shape or form. Paddleboarding and kayaking, joining a boat rental club, and investing in relatively economical boats like pontoons and small runabouts are all great ways to dive into the boating lifestyle. Once someone experiences life on the water, it’s likely they will want to get back out there, exploring new ways to do so. And for those of us who grew up boating, we want to recreate those experiences. My tip: You can’t expect a millennial to buy the largest yacht in the marina; start small by encouraging us to get out on the water first. Sell the experience, not the objects. One boat designed by millennials for millennials is the all-new Scarab 195 Open (p. 36). Easy to drive and with watersports in mind, the 195 Open aims to appeal to a young, active group of boaters. Now that spring commissioning is likely well underway, now’s the time to consider your boat’s fuel. The ethanol mandate is a hot topic in the marine industry, and contributor Helen Aitken sheds some light on a few alternative marine fuel options, including compressed natural gas (p. 40). The name Gar Wood is familiar to most Great Lakes boaters, but did you know he invented the hydraulic lift for dump trucks? Neither did we! Contributor Heather Steinberger tells the fascinating story of this American icon (p. 44). There’s only a few more weeks until the boats are ready to hit the water. Think spring! Leland Harbor Raises Dredging Funds In March we received a letter from Russell Dzuba, asking us to get the word out about Leland Harbor in Leland, Michigan. Residents of the small town were struggling to raise $300,000 to dredge the harbor — a task neglected since 2014 due to tight Leland Township Harbor Commission funds and a lack of federal assistance. We are now happy to announce, however, that a local fundraising effort to purchase a $500,000 dredge boat — so officials could dredge the harbor annually — was met with great enthusiasm. The effort has raised more than $200,000, which will be paired with $300,000 from the Harbor Commission to purchase the new dredge boat. Congrats, Leland!

ACBS 42nd Annual Boat Show Announced Mark your calendars for the Antique and Classic Boat Society’s (ACBS) 42nd Annual Meeting and International Boat Show from September 6-9, 2017. Hosted by the ACBS Glacier Lakes Chapter, the 2017 ACBS Show will take place at Reef Point Marina and the Racine Civic Centre in Racine, Wisconsin. Thousands of new boats, gear and electronics were displayed at the 2017 Miami International Boat Show. Below are a few of the highlights. Boston Whaler’s 380 Outrage made its world premiere. The 380 Outrage features a bow with expansive seating and storage. The cockpit includes a new aft-facing couch with an optional removable table and an optional summer kitchen. FLIR and Raymarine unveiled their most advanced marine thermal cameras and new line of 3D sonar-equipped Raymarine multifunction displays for boaters. The FLIR M100 and M200 thermal cameras provide enhanced awareness at night, while the all-glass Raymarine Axiom MFDs include built-in RealVision 3D sonar. Groupe Beneteau’s many powerboat brands had a busy boat show. Jeanneau showcased the Jeanneau 51 and Leader 33. Prestige had the new 460 on display. Four Winns’ new HD series — the 220, 240 and 270 — along with Scarab’s new 195 Open and Fish models were exhibited. Other new Groupe Beneteau boats on display were: Monte Carlo MC4, 5 and 6; Wellcraft Fisherman 302 and 262; Glastron GS25S; and Lagoon 52. Mercury Marine introduced many new innovations including: Easily downloadable Skyhook Advanced features; next-gen VesselView 703; Mercury Diesel 6.7L midrange engine; and Joystick Piloting for Inboards — a revolutionary system that works on single and dual engine boats.

Robalo introduced the biggest Robalo ever: The R317 dual console. Relax on the sprawling, patent-pending Vista-View Lounge Seat that pivots down into a large sunpad or rotates forward and aft, or take in the view from the L-shaped seating in the bow. Scout Boats debuted its 380 LXF. The boat features a Mercury quad 350-hp rig and award-winning articulating rocket launchers. The 380 LXF also showcases a unique new raised aft-facing lounge seat/electronicallyactuated convertible leaning post option that transforms the seat into a summer kitchen. Sea Ray had its newest models on display, including the 400 SLX and SLX-W 230. The Sundancer 320 also made its world premiere. The Sundancer 320 is a combination between a bowrider and a cruiser, offering an expanded bow for more seating. The 400 SLX is the ultimate entertaining boat, with an innovative starboardside convertible swim terrace, convertible seating and expansive bow seating with armrest. S2 Yachts debuted the brand-new Pursuit S 328 and Tiara F53 Flybridge models. The Pursuit S 328 is built for fishing and for entertainment, and offers a new folding seat design and multiple social zones. The Tiara F53 Flybridge builds upon the Tiara 53 Coupe model, and offers IPS 950 Volvos, 28.5 mph cruise speeds and an expansive flybridge with a U-shaped dinette that can accommodate the entire party.

Despite local efforts to curb a carp invasion in the Great Lakes, a study has found that grass carp have reached three of the five lakes: Erie, Michigan and Ontario. Grass carp is one of four Asian carp species currently threatening to overtake the Great Lakes and disrupt the freshwater ecosystem. Grass carp were voluntarily introduced into the U.S. in the early 1960s in order to control weed growth in waterways. However, grass carp slipped into the Mississippi River and north to the Great Lakes over the past few decades — similar to other Asian carp species. One of the largest concerns about grass carp, according to Bucky Cudmore, the report’s primary author, is that many found in the wild are fertile. When the carp were introduced in hatcheries in the U.S., they were sterilized to prevent their spread. Although the study found that it’s likely that grass carp will spread through Lakes Erie, Huron, Michigan and Ontario, the researchers believe taking immediate preventative steps could curb the invasion.

John Eric Kammermann Retires from Northwest Marine Yacht Basin After 34 years as harbormaster at Northwest Marine Yacht Basin and president of Park Avenue Management, John Eric Kammermann has announced his retirement. Eric has been involved in the marine industry for more than 46 years and has been an ambassador and advocate for Charlevoix, Michigan. He started out in the Coast Guard. Upon discharge, Eric became a licensed captain, carrying vessels up to 100 gross tons. He has numerous hours underway on the all the Great Lakes, the St. Lawrence Seaway, ICW, and the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers. Kammermann later became VP and general manager of the Beaver Island Navigation Company and general manager of the Beaver Island Boat Company. He also joined U.S. Coastal Development and assisted in the development of Northwest Marine Yacht Basin and Fairport West Yacht Club, both in Charlevoix; Duncan Bay Boat Club in Cheboygan, Michigan; and Prairie Harbor Yacht Club in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin. He plans to spend more time on his boat, Va bene 3, with his wife, Vel, and granddaughters Asha, Nila, Pearl and Violet.

The 2017 Michigan Environmental Hall of Fame announced its inductees for this year’s award ceremony. Detroiters Working for Environmental Justice will be awarded as top non-profit organization. The Youth Award will go to Anita Steward and her kids at Freeman Elementary for their work in the Flint water crisis. The Legacy Circle inductee is Marcus Schaaf, who was Michigan’s longest-serving state forester. Under his leadership, the State’s forest system grew from 35,000 acres to more than 3.6 million acres. Because of her efforts, White Lake was delisted as an Area of Concern last year. Hose clamps should be installed no closer than a quarter-inch to the end of the hose and must fully engage the barb or ﬁtting, or else damage to the hose can occur.

properly operating exhaust system not only protects your engine but also the lives of those on-board. Marine exhaust systems for inboard engines can be divided into two basic types: Dry and wet. Dry exhaust systems have been around longer but are now found primarily on commercial vessels or other specialty applications (high performance craft, for example). The basic job of a dry exhaust system is simply to carry hot exhaust gases overboard through a series of metal pipes. These pipes typically extend vertically from the engine and into a protective stack, where exhaust gases are then expelled above the decks, well away from the vessel. Wet exhaust systems are more popular with recreational boats and are the focus of this article. They utilize water to cool the exhaust gases (and quiet engine noise) prior to discharging it overboard. Another benefit of this approach is the additional installation options it provides builders, as the cooled gases allow the system to be routed horizontally to the exhaust outlet. Reduced temperatures also mean other materials (rubber, fiberglass, etc.) can be used in the system. How they work Wet exhaust systems inject cooling water into the exhaust via an exhaust riser or mixing elbow, where the exhaust gas then pushes the water out of the exhaust outlet. Exhaust cooling water is typically provided by the engine’s raw water pump, although a second pump may also be used (depending on the system). Most installations will include a muffler located between the riser and the discharge outlet. This not only reduces engine noise, but also gives errant water entering the exhaust outlet a place to collect. Installation of an exhaust system alarm is recommended, as heat damage to hoses and other non-metal components can occur should cooling water be lost (due to pump failure, blockage, etc.). The alarm — which is triggered by a high temperature heat sensor installed at or near the point of water injection into the exhaust system — should have audible/ visual indicators located at each helm position. Maintenance tips A great familiarization and maintenance strategy is to conduct inspections of your exhaust system at regular intervals, ideally as part of your spring commissioning and fall lay-up routines. All materials used in your exhaust system should be labeled. Hoses, for example, should be labeled “marine wet exhaust” and be able to withstand heat, water weight, pressure, oil and acids. Anything other than short hose runs (i.e. four times the inside diameter of the hose) should utilize wire-reinforced hose, while all hose connections should be made to a ridged

component (pipe, muffler, exhaust outlet, etc.). Hose-to-hose connections — for example a larger hose fitted over a smaller hose, then clamped — are not acceptable. Vessels with a transom exit exhaust should also have an exhaust valve, which is simply a rubber flapper that attaches to the outside of the exhaust, creating a one-way check valve to help prevent water from entering the exhaust (and possibly the engine). During your exhaust system inspection, check hoses for leaks, kinks, chafe, bulging at hose clamps and other signs of deterioration. Verify each hose is double clamped where possible and that all hose clamps are tight and free from corrosion. Keep an eye out for leaks in other system components as well, paying special attention to engine manifolds and exhaust elbow joints, which are prime locations for both leaks and corrosion. Engine manifolds and exhaust risers should be periodically removed, pressure tested and inspected for internal corrosion and clogging, any of which could lead to catastrophic engine failure. This should be considered a routine maintenance item, particularly with systems operating in saltwater. Frequency depends on the vessel’s location (fresh or saltwater) and amount of use; however, at a minimum engine manifolds and exhaust risers should be removed and inspected every four to five years, and more frequently for older units. Heat resistant lagging (insulation) covering dry or “hot” sections of the exhaust should also be removed periodically to allow a full inspection of the components underneath. Check the exhaust system with the engine both off and while running, as some leaks may occur only during engine operation. Aside from the maintenance aspect, finding and correcting exhaust leaks is extremely important from a safety standpoint. Exhaust system leaks can introduce carbon monoxide (CO) into the vessel’s interior with deadly results. ★

oftware updates are important to keep your computers, tablets and phones running at their peak; however, many boat owners may neglect updating their onboard marine electronics. The average vessel’s electronics can be just as sophisticated as any other electronic gadget you may own and can also benefit from the latest software update. Performing an update is not difficult, in most cases, and the benefits can be well worth the trouble. No matter what brand of chartplotter, fish finder, radar or other device you have, updating software on newer electronics is similar across the board and relatively easy to do. Software updates can improve performance, eliminate operational issues and hang-ups, and allow equipment to run smoother and interface better with other equipment. It’s very important that updates are done correctly; if not, you may end up with corrupted software, meaning the equipment would need to be shipped back to the manufacturer for repair. How to install Prior to attempting any kind of update, it’s very important to completely read the manufacturer’s instructions and to back-up the data stored on your device (such as waypoints and routes), as some updates require a full factory reset that wipes out any data stored in the machine. You can find both the backup and update instructions in the user manual and/or online at the manufacturer’s site. Both the user manual and manufacturer’s site should have a dedicated section on software updates (also referred to as upgrades), and they usually include step-by-step instructions along with the upgrade files. Once the update has begun, it should not be stopped or interrupted in any way. Don’t press buttons or power the system down. If the update appears to have stalled, be patient. Some upgrades are quite large and the equipment’s processors are not always speedy, so these updates can take some time. If a sufficient amount of time has passed and you feel there is still an issue, try calling the manufacturer’s tech line before pushing any buttons. Data cards Many update files can and should be downloaded onto a data card that works with your equipment, including compact flash cards, SD cards or Micro SD cards. You can pick up blank cards at any office supply store and many big box retailers. Some equipment requires a specific-size data capability card, so make sure you check with the manufacturer to verify your card will work. Also, ensure your computer has a built-in card reader for the type of card your onboard electronics use. If you have a SD reader on

your computer and the marine equipment requires a Micro SD, you can get adapters that will work for both. If your computer doesn’t have a card reader, an external reader that plugs into a USB port on the computer can be purchased from the same office supply or big box store. While updating software, you may need to turn on all equipment that is connected to the specific piece you are updating; this would include sounder modules, autopilots, multi-function displays and any other equipment connected through NMEA, Ethernet or proprietary cabling. Some updates will also include the connected equipment so that the devices continue to work well together. In other cases, you may need to download updates specifically for those remote modules and equipment. Failure to complete all necessary updates on all parts of the network may result in equipment that no longer shares information or works well together.

Be diligent Software updates allow your equipment to run efficiently, employ the latest technology and system fixes, and add new accessories and modules. Don’t allow the equipment to get too many software versions behind; if you find this is the case, you may first need to update earlier versions in order for things to work correctly. If you are not sure if this is necessary, a quick call to the manufacturer’s tech help line will answer your questions and save you a lot of grief. All the major manufacturers have excellent tech help lines and their technicians are ready to answer all your questions. So don’t be intimidated: Check your software, update it as necessary and then enjoy your equipment at its best. ★

ince the dock is your first and last memory of a great time on the water, boarding and exiting your boat should be as safe as possible. Docks should be designed with safety in mind and easy to use by youngsters, seniors and persons with physical limitations. Docks should include secured walkways and surfaces, good lighting, suitable stairs and handrails, and should not have obstacles or AC current leakage, which can lead to electric shock drowning (ESD). Can you pass this quiz on dock safety? 1. Docks are either permanent or floating. What kinds of materials are used for docks? A) Marine-grade plywood, B) Styrofoam, C) polypropylene plastic, D) galvanized steel grating, E) concrete pavers, F) all of the above. 2. Boston Whaler 230 Outrage The legend continues.

oston Whaler likes to describe its new 230 Outrage center console as having “Huge comfort and huge fishability.” We boarded the 230 Outrage during the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in November to see if Whaler made good on those promises. The 230 Outrage is outfitted in typical, clever Boston Whaler fashion. This is no more evident than at the helm seat; in its normal position it sits upright, with a flip-down back that can be used to prep bait or serve cocktails. Simply release a couple of latches and the assembly flips backward, forming a two-person lounge in the aft cockpit. There’s also convertibility in the bow, where a table can be inserted inside a U-shaped lounge to form a dinette. Remove the cushions and table and you’ve got an expansive casting area. For more comfort there’s additional bench seating ahead of the center console unit and an enclosed head underneath it. Comfort is a good thing, but what about that promised fishability? For starters, there’s a 16-gallon livewell at the transom and fish lockers set into the cockpit deck throughout the 230 Outrage’s length. There’s plenty of rod stowage in the

cockpit, on the optional hardtop, beneath the gunwales and at the bow. Though there are cleats and stainless steel railings on deck that would typically tangle fishing line, Whaler has recessed them throughout, eliminating the problem. Perhaps our favorite fishability feature is the helm dash, which is capable of holding up two 15-inch multifunction, fish-finding displays. The maximum powerplant rating for the 230 Outrage is 350 hp. As you’d expect, that translates to some impressive performance figures. A Mercury 350 Verado propels the 230 Outrage from 0 to 30 mph in only 9.6 seconds. Keep the throttle down and the 230 rockets up to 54.3 mph at wide-open throttle. Owners with an eye toward efficiency will want to run the 230 Outrage at around 20 mph, where fuel burn is only nine gallons per hour, netting a theoretical range of approximately 244 miles. “The new 230 Outrage delivers comfort and capability for boaters who expect the very best,” says Boston Whaler vice president of sales marketing and customer service Jeff Vaughn. “We’re pleased to add another source of Core Confidence to the storied Outrage lineup.” ★

he Ocean Alexander 70e builds upon the company’s more than 30 years of building high-quality motoryachts with luxury, comfort and long-distance passage making in its DNA. The “e” in this bold new motoryacht’s name stands for “evolution,” and progressions in the design, engineering and style of the model are visible. For starters, the 70e is the first Ocean Alexander to use Volvo Penta IPS pod drives — a pair of them, in fact, rated at 900 hp each. Tiara F44 Flybridge A room with a view.

hen Tiara introduced its new F44 Flybridge at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in November, plenty of folks in our media pool thought they simply plopped a flybridge on top of the existing C44 Coupe. There’s some truth in that; but, despite the similarity of the hull it rides on, the F44 Flybridge is a totally different boat. And that’s a good thing. Perhaps the most distinguishing feature on the F44 Flybridge is, well, its flybridge. Massive and expansive, it creates an entirely separate, covered outdoor living space capable of entertaining eight or more people. Accessed by a set of gangway stairs from the aft cockpit, it has a large six- to seven-person C-shaped dinette to starboard — great for entertaining. A wetbar is adjacent to it, with a sink, cutting board and refrigerator. Forward is a L-shaped lounge to port with a single helm station to starboard. The view from up here is commanding and quite breathtaking, both fore and aft. Inside, the F44 Flybridge is similar to the C44 Coupe, but there’s extra room forward and to starboard in the

main salon. The C44’s helm station is replaced with a long, comfy chaise lounge on the F44. Below, the master stateroom is forward in the bow with an island queen bed. Guest quarters are situated midcabin under the main salon. There are two enclosed shower/head compartments: The master head and a day head. Throughout is the luxurious trim and palpable build quality we’re used to seeing in Tiara yachts. Standard power on the F44 Flybridge is a pair of Volvo Penta IPS600 pod drives at 435 hp with joystick docking controls and glass cockpit instrument gauges at the helm. The F44 will sprint up to around 28 mph in about 18 seconds with these powerplants, eventually topping out at 33.7 mph at 3,628 rpm. The engines are most efficient at 28.2 mph and 3,250 rpm with a lean fuel burn of 35.5 gallons per hour. The F44 Flybridge is an excellent progression of the C44, providing the ultimate in outdoor entertaining spaces with a potent dose of performance and efficiency, all wrapped in Tiara’s luxurious and modern design ethos. ★

Williams Minijet 280

Jet power to the people.

here are many advantages to jet power on a boat: The lack of a dangerous propeller makes watersports and other waterborne activities safer; jets provide swift acceleration and like-it’s-on-rails cornering performance; and jet-powered boats often draw much less water, which makes them perfect for adventuring into skinny water, creeks and coves. But until recently you didn’t see jet technology integrated into smaller boats like dinghies and tenders. That was until Williams Jet Tenders hit the scene. We got a look at the company’s Minijet 280 model. The smallest model in Williams’ lineup — at 9 feet, 2 inches overall — was designed to bring affordability to the lineup and to compete with tenders typically equipped with outboard power. Though the 280 doesn’t have the high-octane performance that Williams’ larger jet tenders do, the 45-hp Rotax three-cylinder engine is no slouch and is able to propel the 280 up to a top speed of 36 mph. Getting there is fun, too, with an amazing power curve that literally plants you back in your seat. Three people and a driver can go for a ride, or you can pare it

down to a driver only and pull a 160-pound waterskier across the water. The Minijet 280 is built on a rigid fiberglass hull with large-diameter wraparound sponsons that provide excellent stability, whether you load up with provisions or take the crew out for dinner. The 280’s 465-pound weight does mean you’ll need to have a retrieval system on-board, but most folks who buy this type of tender will already have such equipment installed. Inside, the driver sits straddled on a saddle-type seat behind the helm while passengers can make themselves comfortable on the cushy sponsons. Ron Silvia, vice president of sales for Jefferson Beach Yacht Sales, summarizes: “For the past decade Williams Jet Tenders has been the leading manufacturer of jet tenders worldwide. ou know that feeling when you’re driving a great car and the tires stick to the road like glue, the forces of nature push you a little deeper into the seat, the steering wheel is so responsive that it becomes an extension of your being and your adrenaline pushes you into a euphoric high? And when you’re done, you can’t wait for the next time you’ll be behind the wheel, throwing caution to the wind and leaving the stresses of life at the curb.

Yeah, I get it. Been there, done that. The issue is that you usually have to leave that feeling shoreside when you get on your boat, unless you have one of those go-fast gas guzzlers (gold chains optional). Leave it to our friends from Down Under to package those sensations into a classy yacht that also allows you to let loose. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m talking about the Riviera 5400 Sport Yacht. This could very well be the sportiest yacht with an automobile spirit. LAKELANDBOATING.COM

My captain for the sea trial was none other than Chris McCafferty, international sales director for Riviera Yachts, the company guy here in the U.S. I could ask him any question about the 5400 and he would answer it in detail and then some. It was also good to have him as captain because I wanted to not only test the boat but also stress it a little. As we discussed the turning radius, McCafferty exclaimed that it’s about the tightest you can get in a yacht this size. Not quite believing him, I needed to be shown. And show he did. While running just over 20 knots, McCafferty wheeled the 5400 hard over and fast, creating a tight circle that we quickly ran right back up on. Now, a couple of things here: I let McCafferty do this so if he broke the yacht it would be his issue, not mine; I never want to go back to my editor and ask them to cover a repair. Also, McCafferty was so sure of the performance and handling of the 5400, he had no doubt that at that speed and with that maneuver, this yacht would do as told. The 5400 leaned well into the turn, not out of it. Even though we heeled over in excess of 20 degrees (my unscientific measurement), the hull had a good bite on the water, not slipping out from underneath or skipping. There was no lugging from the twin Volvo Penta IPS 950 (725-hp) diesel blocks with pod drives. Cruising speed dials in around 28 knots — a comfortable speed for this size pleasurecraft. Visibility stays constant, as there is very little bow rise as you accelerate. The powerplants also spun up to offer a WOT of 32.9 knots at 2550 rpm (measured in one direction). If Riviera can combine this much control, maneuverability and oomph, heck, they could build whatever they want on top and I would buy it.

To my pleasure and hopefully yours, the rest of the 5400 features fine craftsmanship, space management and a sporty style. The helm has a pod style with a simple layout that doesn’t impede on the living space. But simple doesn’t mean minimal.

Finished in wrapped leather and wood trim, the helm blends nicely with the overall décor. All electronics are here, including dual 15-inch Volvo Penta Glass Bridge displays, an engine display, a CZone system monitor, a sport-style wheel, a Garmin VHF and more. A right-hand side console holds the Volvo throttle controls and optional joystick, a chartplotter controller pad (to eliminate hunching over the console) and wiper controls. Those wipers clear the three tempered glass windshield panes. Left of the helm is a large, L-shaped companion settee keeping the crowd and captain together.

Sleep well

Access to the staterooms is via a staircase to the right of the helm. From the lower foyer, there’s access to all three quarters. Forward in the peak is the VIP with a queen walkaround berth, hullside windows, cabinets and a 24-inch LED TV. To port is a twin bunk stateroom featuring upper/lower berths, cabinets, an overhead hatch and a cedar locker. Both staterooms share a common head to starboard, complete with a basin sink, a freshwater head and a shower stall with bench seat. If you don’t desire the twin bunk stateroom, you can opt for an open lounge area. Midship is the full-beam master stateroom, with creature comforts like a king-size berth, hull windows with portholes, a 32-inch LED TV, cedar lockers and plenty of drawers. The starboard side contoured lounge seat is the perfect spot to sneak

Main Street

The main deck is the place to be. With ingenuity, Riviera designed plenty of living space inside, which blends well with the valuable real estate outside. Slide open the aft glass door and lift the aft window to expand the party space; now, the galley that was once aft is centered in the middle of the main deck social areas, making meal prep and serving much easier while keeping the chef the center of attention. Open to all areas, the starboard U-shaped galley is large enough to prepare a sit-down dinner, with plenty of cool spaces for provisions. I counted four Isotherm fridge/freezer drawers, dual flat cooktop burners, one Fisher & Paykel dishwasher, one Miele microwave convection oven, one wine cooler, numerous overhead cabinets, one stainless steel sink and drop-in refuse. Riviera also built a dedicated slot below the sink to store the sink cover — good thinking! The portside L-shaped leather salon dinette with wood table and twin stools along the forward side of the galley counter offers plenty of seating at mealtime. Add in the forward helm settee, aft deck L-shaped lounge across the aft bulkhead and transom lounge seating for more seating than you know what to do with. Don’t forget about the

aft deck wetbar station, which includes a fridge, icemaker, sink and electric barbecue. You’ll be mere inches away from anything you may need. I was confused to see the 40-inch LED TV in the salon tucked away in the aft corner. McCafferty showed me that with a click of a button, the TV swings out 90 degrees so anyone inside can see the screen. It also tucks away nicely when not in use.

Out and about

Does all this interior room equate to narrow, trip-over-your-feet side decks? Nay! I found ample sidewalks measuring in at 11.8 inches wide; that’s enough to get both feet planted side-by-side. The superstructure also has upper and lower hand grips molded in along the side for added safety. Side and bow railings cap above the knees, which helps when transiting to the forward sunpad lounge. It’s all about appearances, and the 5400 has a look similar to a muscle car. With a sleek, low-slung profile and the superstructure overhang that can resemble angry eyebrows, the 5400 will be noticed for her prowess and style. Within the integrated fiberglass superstructure are side windows with sliders and an overhead electric sunroof with tinted glass. The Riviera 5400 Sport Yacht is a smooth handling, fully appointed, classy vessel with the pedigree of its Australian-based builder to back it up. Take your adrenaline rush from the seat of your car to the seat of this yacht — don’t leave it at the dock. ★

ere come the transformers: Boats that extend entertainment space in clever ways and leave your friends in awe. Scarab’s 195 Open has a transom tailgate that transforms the stern wall by folding backward, creating an extension of the swim platform. Unlatch the hinges and two gas shocks (think SUV trunk hatch) gently ease the entire wall down. With coving and raftups so popular on weekends, having a drop-down tailgate just makes sense. From giggling kids jumping into your waiting arms, to a platform for easily accessing the water and having a place to rest beverages and nibbles, the tailgate brings you much closer to the water. We typically equate the verb “tailgating” with sporting events, which, by the way, Green Bay fans coined in 1919 when they backed Studebaker and modified Ford Model T pickup trucks around the field, folded down tailgates for seating and quite possibly dined on a few Johnsonville brats. Scarab is now reinventing this verb. DESIGNED FOR MOMENTS Designed by millennials for millennials, the 195 Open — all 18 feet, 10 inches — is a sweet package of features powered by Rotax Jet Power. This is a proven closed cooling engine (for long engine life), which includes a weed and rope guard to make each boating day hassle free. Bundled with Scarab’s Intelligent Neutral and Reverse (iNR) system, drivers can adjust neutral speed on the fly, quickly shift into reverse and effectively control maneuverability at slow speeds. Without the need to trim, new boaters will find this boat easy to drive. And with the side graphics made of rubber mats that double as fenders, docking couldn’t be easier. There’s plenty of power for towing tubers and skiers, as well. The 195 Open was designed for people who value moments and weekend adventures more than objects themselves. With a 31-gallon fuel tank and an optional enclosed porta-potti in the center console changing room, you can leave the dock at sunup and not return until after that big orange ball of light kisses the lake. Worship the solar deity from an aft sunpad fit for two or transform the bow into the chill zone with optional bow fill-in cushions; the boat offers two distinctive social zones. Relax next to the captain in the pair of aft flip-up

bolster seats, or fold them flat when boarding. A built-in cooler under the forward bow seat drains overboard and keeps drinks handy. There is also room for a removable cooler. One option defining the 195’s profile, and frankly offering much needed shade, is the Bimini for the optional T-top. A tow point on the T-top makes this a true watersports boat and a wakeboarder’s dream. Feeding the Engine Know your alternative marine fuel options. BY HELEN AITKEN

DIESEL AND BIODIESEL FUELS

Diesel has a short shelf life, degrading more than 25 percent while stored for less than a month. It then breaks down further, forming sediments (sludge) and water, approximately 100 days after being refined. As a solvent, it corrodes the tank and softens rubber hoses and seals. Filters may need frequent replacement. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s prone to microbial contamination, which clogs fuel lines and filters, develops moisture, and requires additives to combat multiple problems including fuel stabilization.

hen crude oil is refined, byproducts like propane, asphalt, lubricants, fuel oil, gasoline and diesel fuel emerge at different boiling points during the distillation. Gasoline and diesel fuels are refined further into different grades determined by octane and cetane, respectively, and they combust differently. Gas engines use a spark from a spark plug to ignite the fuel, while diesel fuel combusts with oxygen in a piston-driven chamber under pressure. While these are the most common types of fuel for marine engines, there are alternative fuels many boaters may not know about, including another fossil fuel, natural gas.

An alternative to diesel is biodiesel, which is made from processed vegetable oils added to diesel fuel in varied amounts, up to 20 percent of the volume (B20). It burns cleaner with less carbon monoxide and smoke emissions, which reduces greenhouse gases. Biodiesel is less toxic to marine life than diesel; however, spills are treated as a diesel spill. Unfortunately, B20 may not be covered under marine engine warranties. Biodiesel locations are found in all Great Lakes states, many near water (BIODIESEL.ORG).

ETHANOL 10, 15 AND HIGHER

The U.S. Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS) mandated by Congress requires 36 billion gallons of renewable fuels (as blended gasoline) to be available to the public by 2022. Biofuels ethanol 10 (E10) and E15 were developed to lower greenhouse emissions while reducing gasoline dependence. However, ethanol-added gasoline is a hot topic with lawmakers, corn growers and marine engine manufacturers. Ethanol is an alcohol produced by fermenting corn with yeast; E10 is the product of 10 percent ethanol added to 90 percent gasoline, while E15 adds 15 percent ethanol to 85 percent gasoline. The ethanol/gas combustion produces less energy (octane) than gasoline. Older boats with fiberglass tanks may not be compatible with ethanol fuel, even with an additive; however, engines manufactured after 2000 are compatible with E10. After years of testing, the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) insists that E15 and higher are not acceptable for small engines. Harmful effects range from damaging fuel lines, tanks and rubber-based parts, to producing more exhaust pollution and destroying the engine. Cold temperatures and long storage time also affect ethanol fuels; moisture is drawn in and fuel separates into water and gasoline layers (phase separation). The water layer then sits on the bottom of the tank and is drawn in first. This is a problem

because engines can’t run on water. Yet, a water-separating fuel filter and additives may disperse moisture for combustion without engine damage. Although most gas pumps include at least 10 percent ethanol in their gasoline, “flex-fuel” stations carry varying ethanol percentage fuels. There are 705 flex-fuel stations in 522 cities within Great Lakes states, and more than 3,000 gas pumps nationwide contain E85 (85 percent ethanol with 15 percent gasoline). E85 may be easily confused with regular 87-octane gasoline and will destroy a marine engine. Look before you pump. Before using ethanol fuels, research the recommendations from engine and boat manufacturers, and then purchase the recommended fuel at reliable stations.

approved by the U.S. Coast Guard for chartered vessels carrying more than six passengers. “Boat engines must use 10 times more energy to push boats in the water than on the road,” says Guerreiro. “More fuel is used in boats than land vehicles, and catalytic converters are not available to reduce pollution.” Compressed natural gas (CNG) is a combination of hydrogen, propane and natural gas. It matches or exceeds gasoline performance with a 130-octane equivalent. Emissions are 90 percent cleaner than diesel and 70 percent cleaner than gasoline, with no exhaust odor, toxic gases or smoke. It’s safer for passengers, difficult to ignite, and in the event of a fire around the tank, a pressure release valve jettisons the fuel into the atmosphere similar to airplanes. Carbon isn’t deposited, which extends the engine life, and CNG conversion has a tax advantage by increasing the boat’s value. CNG is liquefied, pressurized and roughly the same volume as gasoline, weighing 5 pounds compared to 6.3 pounds for gasoline. Tank sizes are based on the boater’s gas consumption, or 80-90 percent of a normal boat trip, before switching to gasoline. Tanks have 20-year warranties and are constructed of lightweight composite carbon fiber and plastic, and have high-grade anticorrosive stainless steel valves. The Blue Gas Marine tanks don’t freeze, leak or need additives. Notably, the helm control switches between CNG and gasoline seamlessly, at any speed. Another option is to use both CNG and gasoline together to stretch the fuel and range when both fuels are low. Blue Gas Marine’s goal is for all major marine engines to be compatible with the hybrid technology. With CNG, fuel consumption is reduced by 40 percent compared to gasoline, which leads to a 70 percent cost reduction; it pays for itself in six months to one year. CNG is perfect

Another gasoline-blended alternative fuel is a biofuel like biobutanol (Bu16). It’s an alcohol (isobutanol) produced by fermenting abundant biomass sources like corn, sugar beets, sorghum, sweet potatoes, sugar cane, agricultural waste products and even grass. Using genetically engineered yeast, 10 times more Bu16 is produced versus ethanol production, and it’s chemically identical to gasoline produced from fossil fuels. Bu16 combines 16 percent isobutanol with 84 percent gasoline and generates emissions similar to E10. It has a higher octane and higher energy output without engine modifications, and eliminates engine sputtering, phase separation and corrosion. Mercury Marine tested Bu16 for five years in conjunction with the NMMA, the EPA and the U.S. Coast Guard using top marine four-stroke engines: Mercury, Volvo Penta, Yamaha, Honda and Evinrude’s two-stroke pontoon engine, clocking hundreds of hours each. The results of this test gained approval for marine engine use by these organizations. Gevo, Inc. (gevo.com), located in Luverne, Minnesota, is the largest U.S. isobutanol producer and provided the Bu16 for the engine testing. Consequently, its Bu16 production has increased for future boat consumers and other small engines. To date, no marine engines are warranted for fuel over 10 percent ethanol or Bu16, but when Bu16 is widely available, warranties should cover it. Biobutanol is transported, stored and dispensed like gasoline, with identical spill management. It’s more expensive to produce and buy at the pump, but it will eventually be competitive. Currently, Biobutanol-12 is approved for on-road vehicles, and in the future Biobutanol may replace gasoline gallon-for-gallon.

for maximizing range in high-consumption engines used in sport fishing and long cruising boats, law enforcement boats, military boats, towboats, tugboats and ferryboats. This technology is perfect for four-stroke engines and was tested successfully for Yamaha, Mercury, Volvo and Suzuki outboards, Mercruiser inboard engines and Caterpillar diesel engines. Not only will diesel engines perform better with CNG, use less fuel and reduce emissions, but also sludge will be greatly reduced and the engine’s life will be extended. Contact Blue Gas Marine to order their hybrid system; certified service centers are located in North Carolina, Texas, Michigan, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Costs are determined by: Tank size and placement; and engine size and number. A less expensive placement option is installing the unit horizontally by the transom under a bench where the space is already available, or under the helm seat. Tanks are placed in such a way to conserve deck space. Guerreiro estimates that a 22-foot Chris-Craft V-hull with a 250 Yamaha outboard engine costs approximately $7,000 to transform to a CNG system. The cost is less for boats with smaller engines. Installing the system takes about a week for outboard engines, but inboard engines may take longer. Blue Gas Marine has partnered with Intrepid Boats, Dusky Marine, Ribcraft USA and Armstrong Marine to create factory-installed systems. These companies represent diversity in boat classifications and performance: Sport fishing, commercial aluminum boats and rigid inflatable boats. In the Great Lakes region, CNG is abundant in municipal stations or at home, but trailerable boats need a transferring nozzle and home compressor to fill up. Additionally, Blue Gas Marine deploys mobile filling stations to select marinas without storage tanks.

Expect to see additional Blue Gas Marine products around Lake Michigan and Lake Superior in the near future. Blue Gas Marine is also working on expanding its equipment and service centers outside the U.S. for water and land vehicles that use natural gas. The proactive measures in biofuel development and testing in the boating industry are commendable but there’s more to do. Alternative fuel choices allow boaters to make educated decisions for less dependence on fossil fuels, a cleaner environment and greater energy output, while reducing the impact on the wallet. H

Fuel Additives Common sense dictates that proper maintenance is key to a safe, “healthy” boat. Maintenance includes cleaning fuel filters, having yearly inspections, replacing needed parts, using the right fuel and watching the tank for water and sediments. “Bad” gas should be removed from the tank and replaced with new gas. If a boat sits for more than a couple of weeks, despite the quality of gas, an additive is needed. Winterized boats’ fuel tanks should be 95 percent filled with good quality fuel (with some room to allow for gas expansion) and a stabilizer. Which additives are best? Marine engine manufacturers make additives specifically designed for their product. They are tested

with their engines and are recommended in user manuals, but may be pricey; these are the best option. Additionally, there are about 35 companies manufacturing over-the-counter additives. To ensure that these additives work with an engine, boaters should check online product reviews and ask their boat dealer or maintenance chief for recommendations.

A Few populAr Additives Are: Biobor EB: Designed for gasoline ethanol treatments and claims to clean entire fuel system, add lubricity and stabilize stored gas for up to 18 months. The additive can be used in any two- or four-cycle engine.

Star Tron Enzyme Fuel Treatment: Claims to keep the entire engine fuel delivery system clean by removing and preventing gum, carbon and varnish. The product is also said to help stabilize fuel for up to two years while reducing emissions. Sta-Bil 360 Marine: Claims to help clean fuel systems, prevent corrosion, improve performance and stabilize fuel for up to 12 months. The product is also said to increase power and fuel efficiency of the engine. ValvTect X-Tended Protection (XP+): This new product for gasoline engines claims to stabilize fuel for 1 year or more, and maximize power, acceleration and fuel economy.

The Story of Gar Wood by HeaTHer STeinberG er

he was called a madman’s dream, and on this autumn day the gathered crowd understood why. The mahogany hydroplane screamed like a torpedo across the flat surface of the Detroit River at a mind-boggling 120 mph, her goggled pilot barely visible at the stern behind four roaring 1,800-hp, 12-cylinder Packard engines and 24 open exhaust stacks. It was September 4, 1932, and Miss America X successfully beat Miss England II to retake Britain’s Harmsworth Trophy, giving the crowd a moment of unadulterated joy amid the heaviness of the Great Depression. But she wasn’t finished yet. Just two weeks later, this 38-foot-long, 10-foot-wide, 8-ton speedboat smashed the world record on the St. Clair River, hitting an electrifying 124.91 mph. That’s more than 2 miles a minute — a speed that remains respectable even in the 21st century. And once again, her pilot, Gar Wood, was at her helm. In America, everyday life is infused with an age-old ethos that our freedom supplies us with ample opportunities for success, provided that we are resourceful and willing to work hard. It’s a set of ideals enshrined in our Declaration of Independence, which

proclaims that all men are created equal, with the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. But not all men are created equal. Every once in a while, although he might be born to ordinary circumstances, a man comes along who is decidedly extraordinary.

Childhood passions George Van of The Detroit News once wrote, “To the public, he was Tom Swift, Jules Verne, Frank Merriwell, with a little bit of Horatio Alger thrown in.” But Garfield “Gar” Arthur Wood did not enter the world in 1880 as a celebrated hero; rather, he was born the eldest of 12 children in Mapleton, Iowa, the son of grocer and Civil War veteran Walter W. Wood and Elizabeth Wood, whose family once ran a Minnesota stagecoach inn. The Wood family moved to Minnesota in 1883, and according to the Antique Boat Museum in Clayton, New York, Wood’s father operated ferries on Lake Osakis. The youngster helped his father crew the steamers, and along the way he demonstrated an unusual aptitude for mechanics. He once noted, “Even when a boy, I made it my business to watch everything that went on about me and to find out all I could about everything I did not know.” He also made it his business to learn how to go fast. There was a rivalry between ferries on Lake Osakis, and

Living in Duluth as a teenager, Wood continued to pursue his interest in all things mechanical, accompanying his father on the steamboats he captained and getting a part-time job looking after three gasoline-powered government inspection boats. He studied engineering at the Armour Institute of Technology in Chicago, and upon his graduation returned to Duluth and got involved in the brand-new automotive industry. “When I stopped running the government motor boats, automobiles were coming into general use, and I decided to work as an automobile mechanic,” Wood told The Rudder. He became one of the first Ford dealers in the area, selling the Model N (the Model T had yet to be invented). He relocated to St. Paul in 1908 and two years later opened the automobile repair and supply shop, G.A. Wood Company. He also married Murlen Fellows that year; they would have one child together, Garfield Jr. One day, on a Mississippi River cruise with a friend, Wood encountered the skipper of a little powerboat that was having engine trouble. Wood helped owner William Cleveland get Leading Lady running properly, and later, after making some modifications to the boat, the two experienced racing success in the Mississippi Valley Power Boat Association circuit. “I was speedboat crazy from that moment,” Wood said many years later. “It’s a mechanic’s game, and I guess that’s why I like it.” Wood then built his own boat, the single-step hydroplane Little Leading Lady, but knew he didn’t have the financing to be competitive. His fortunes, however, were about to change. In 1911, at the age of 31, the young entrepreneur witnessed a truck driver dumping a large load of coal

by hand, and he wondered how the task might be accomplished by the simple push of a button. To solve the problem, he invented a hydraulic hoist that would lift the front end of a truck bed so its load would slide out the back. He spent his life savings, roughly $100, to build the prototype and applied for a patent in October 1912. The patent was awarded in 1915, and through Wood Hydraulic Hoist Company, Gar Wood created the personal fortune that would finance his world-class adventures in boatbuilding and racing.

Creating classics Wood moved his family to Detroit in 1915. Now with the means to enter the racing world, he purchased Miss Detroit from Chris Smith, founder of venerable Chris Smith & Sons Boat Company in Algonac, Michigan. Wood eventually purchased the company. For six years, Smith built racing boats under Wood’s direction. Together, they won five consecutive American Power Boat Association Gold Cups (1917-21) and two Harmsworth trophies (1920-21) before Smith split off in 1923 to focus on Chris-Craft. In one remarkable feat, Wood combined his love for boats with his love for airplanes, rebuilding a Curtis 12 engine and putting it into Miss Detroit III. Although detractors said the engine would pound itself to pieces, the boat won the Gold Cup Race in 1917. In 1920, Wood set his sights on the British International Trophy for Motorboats, also known as the Harmsworth Trophy. He was determined to win the trophy back for the United States. Not only did he do that with his celebrated Miss America I — an endeavor that reportedly cost him a quarter of a million dollars — but also he brought the competition to the Detroit River in 1921, and then won seven of the next eight competitions with Miss America I through X. Wood changed his company name to Garwood Industries, which produced engines, hoists, winches, refuse compactors, truck bodies and trailers, buses, scrapers, blades, crane shovels, attachments for the construction industry and, of course, boats. Not only did the company produce Wood’s many racers, it also built a series of “gentlemen’s runabouts” designed for both racing and recreation, starting with the 33-foot Baby Gar in 1922. At one point, Wood operated factories in Alabama, California, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and even in the United Kingdom. They were among the finest production facilities in the world. Wood retired from racing in 1933 after a final run with Miss America X, his largest racer and likely his greatest design. Gar Wood Inc. and Garwood Industries continued producing boats until 1947, although Wood himself retired to his Miami island home a few years before. He died there in 1971, at the age of 90.

In a 1935 issue of The Rudder, Wood recalled “the race to end all races.” “Our old boat slowly but surely drew ahead, then, when we still had a mile or more to go, we discovered that we didn’t have enough fuel to finish at top speed,” he remembered. “We set to axes smashing every available piece of woodwork and feeding it to the furnace. We won the race, but there wasn’t a table or chair left on board… as nearly as I can remember, we averaged 8 mph. “I still feel the thrill of winning that race,” he continued. “The engines driving those paddlewheels fascinated me. I resolved right then that someday I was going to build race boats of my own.” He was eight years old.

The legend lives on “He was such an interesting character,” says Henry Mistele, a lawyer from Grosse Pointe, Michigan, whose family has significant connections to Wood. “He drew a million people to the Detroit River to watch him race.” Mistele is the current owner of Miss America X. His father, Harold, owned Miss America IX, which is now in the possession of Mistele’s brother, Chuck, in South Carolina. But the connections between the families run even deeper. “I have a photo of my dad and grandfather with Gar Wood,” Mistele says. “They were in the coal industry and bought his dump boxes.” Mistele Coal & Oil Company provided coal and heat to homes throughout the Detroit metro area. Harold Mistele started working for the company at the age of 12 and later became president and CEO. “My dad bought Miss America IX many years ago in Algonac,” Mistele recalls. “He restored her, put in Chevy engines, and put her on display. My brother got her after my dad died. “There was quite a story with that boat,” he notes with a chuckle. Indeed. In 1931, she was the first boat to reach 100 mph. Also that year, Wood faced his great rival, England’s Kaye Don aboard Miss England, during the Harmsworth race; before the second heat, Don turned down Wood’s request for a 45-minute delay so he could fix a crack in Miss America IX’s fuel tank. “So, Gar ordered everyone out of the boathouse, chopped a hole in the deck and brazed the crack himself,” Mistele says. “He definitely could’ve been killed. But he wasn’t. He fixed it, and they made the start time.” Then there was the day in September 1932 that made Miss America X famous. “When Gar broke that speed record, he took the time to go off course so he could wave to the press and people could take pictures,” Mistele marvels. “He’d do all that and still finish the race.” As he continued to race, he also continued to innovate, finding new ways to make his boats faster and more powerful. According to Mistele, Packard was worried about the V-12s in Miss America X, Wood’s madman’s dream. They advised him that the gearboxes wouldn’t be able to handle the torque. They got a typical Wood response. “He told them, ‘Well, we’ll go make one,’” Mistele says, laughing. “He was probably as concerned about the gearboxes as the Packard engineers were, but he said, ‘I have 2,000 horses I have yet to use,’ and he believed he could get more speed. “Gar could have paid people, but he wanted to do things himself,” Mistele continues. “To make such a fortune, and then risk his life the way he did, it just blows my mind.” Wood has been gone for more than four decades, but his boats — and the stories — remain. They serve as colorful evidence that a boy from humble beginnings can make his dreams come true through sheer ingenuity, tenacity and courage. In fact, he might be a hero, too. H

He did the same with the Havana Special train from Miami to New York. n He had the nickname “The Gray Fox of Algonac” due to his lean physique, silver hair and St. Clair River home. n Wood once owned Florida’s Fisher Island, located just off the Miami coastline. ingston — Ontario’s oldest city — holds court at the eastern end of Lake Ontario. It serves as the gateway to the historic Rideau Canal and the St. Lawrence River’s picturesque Thousand Islands. Strategically located in the middle of Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal, Kingston is a perfect focal point for boating vacations. So when our friends needed boat sitters for their 64-foot Grand Alaskan docked in Kingston, the Queen B, my husband and I jumped at the chance. Two municipal marinas offer seasonal and transient dockage. The Flora MacDonald Confederation Basin Marina is ideally positioned in the heart of downtown Kingston and where we boarded the Queen B. While this 300-slip marina has no pumpout or fueling facility, you can’t beat the convenient location. To the west and about a 45-minute walk from downtown you’ll find the other municipal marina, Portsmouth Olympic Harbour, which features 250 slips, a spacious launch ramp, fuel, pumpout and complete washroom facilities. West of town, Collins Bay Marina offers 300 slips adjacent to the beautiful Lemoine Conservation area. This friendly, family owned and managed marina is nestled in a peaceful, sheltered harbor. Should you have an emergency situation, the expertly trained staff respond quickly. Collins Bay also has a 65-ton crane and a precision mast crane on-site.

On Kingston’s downtown waterfront, we kicked off our weeklong visit at the tourist information center in the city’s historic railway station, which is next to a shiny, restored railroad engine, the Spirit of Sir John A. We picked up information on the more than 20 area museums, including the Bellevue

House — a National Historic Site dating back to 1840 that was once home to Canada’s first prime minister and local hero, Sir John A. Macdonald. Guides dressed in period costumes provide tours of the house and gardens. Next door to Portsmouth Olympic Harbour you’ll find Canada’s Penitentiary Museum, featuring artifacts and photographs housed in the former warden’s residence. Just up the hill, the Original Hockey Hall of Fame pays tribute to Canada’s national sport and features the Don Cherry collection; Cherry, of loud sport jacket fame, grew up in the neighborhood. Unfortunately, our favorite museum, the Marine Museum of the Great Lakes, closed recently, as its highly sought-after lakefront property was sold for residential development. We highly recommend the guided tour of Kingston City Hall, which was built in 1844 while Kingston was the first capital of Canada (Ottawa was later selected as the capital, to distance it from Canada’s then-enemy, the U.S.). City Hall now serves as the administrative center for Kingston and is filled with interesting memorabilia, including the impressive sunburst chandelier, which sports 373 light bulbs. City Hall serves as the jumping-off point for free, self-guided walking tours through town; be sure to pickup the provided printed and audio route guides. We laced up our shoes and strolled past lovingly maintained, stately historic limestone homes along King Street, just one of the 10 tours outlined in the guide. The city got its nickname “Limestone City” from the many heritage buildings constructed from local limestone, which are still standing today. Next, we were off to the Historic Cathedral Church of St. George, which offers a self-guided tour that we completed after listening to Ali Berkok’s chamber-jazz piano performance — one of a dozen such performances hosted by the church throughout the summer.

Canada Celebrates 150th Anniversary This year marks Canada’s 150th anniversary. To celebrate, there will be year-round events across the country. See a list of events at PASSPORT2017.CA. Parks Canada is also oﬀering free admission to national parks and heritage sites for the entire year, and will waive lockage fees on the Rideau Canal and other waterways. In the fall, a Fright Trolley visits the usual haunts, as well as an outdoor haunted Fort Fright animatronics and live actors on the grounds of Fort Henry. If you’re feeling lucky while in the area, experience the fun and excitement at Shorelines Casino Thousand Islands in Gananoque, Ontario. Just a 20-minute drive from Kingston, they offer 550 slot machines, popular table games, distinctive food and beverage options and entertainment.

Art effect and shopping

Kingston features world-class art galleries, among them the Agnes Etherington Art Centre and the Union Gallery; both are located on the campus of Queen’s University, one of Canada’s oldest degree-granting institutions. The campus is also home to the Miller Museum of Geology, which has an interesting exhibit on the geological history of Kingston and the Thousand Islands area. Modern Fuel is an artist-run gallery showcasing contemporary Canadian and international artwork, while the Window Art Gallery features local artists. The Mera Qi Art Annex features 20 local artists’ works. Visitors can watch while local artists create porcelain pieces at Black Dog Pottery and hand-blown glass at Kingston Glass Studio and Gallery. The galleries are all within walking distance of Confederation Basin Marina. The cobblestone streets of Kingston are lined with shops and boutiques. Find hand-loomed knit and felted artwear at Carolyn M. Barnett Studio, organic products at Tara Natural Foods, homemade fresh pasta and sauces at Pasta Genova, and gourmet mustards and condiments at General Brock’s Commissary. Visit Kingston’s independent bookstore, the Novel Idea, and Verde, a general store

Dine Downtown During our weeklong stay in Kingston, we could only sample a few of the hundreds of fine-dining restaurants, cafés, bistros and eateries. Here are a few of our favorite food experiences: > Chez Piggy has a charming courtyard found down a tiny alley. We sipped wine while enjoying local and house-made charcuterie underneath trees draped with tiny white lights. This popular restaurant opened in 1987 by a member of the 1960s pop group, The Lovin’ Spoonful, and is housed in a former horse stable. We later heard its thyme-marinated grilled ostrich is to die for. > Pan Chancho — sister restaurant to Chez Piggy — is a bakery, restaurant and take-out establishment that serves up some of the best artisanal, Old World bread and delectable desserts. We breakfasted on their signature oversize platter, the El Chancho, with bacon, chorizo, eggs over easy, roasted corn salad, crispy red potatoes, piquillo peppers stuffed with herb cream cheese, grilled savory brioche and yummy bacon jam. > Woodenheads Gourmet Pizza sports a wood-fired, beehive-shaped oven amid the diners. Pizzas are billed as “tomato, white, green or in between.” We savored one

from the tomato column called Arrabbiata (super-dynamite sausage, Pomodoro sauce, mozzarella, calabrese salami and banana peppers), and a green pizza, the Bambino (pesto, lemon chicken, feta and sundried tomatoes). > At Sipps Coﬀee and Dessert Bar you can enjoy your latte or a decadent hot chocolate accompanied by a “brookie” — a browniecookie with a surprise treat in the center — while overlooking Springer Market Square. > Kingston Brewing Company is Ontario’s oldest brewpub. Good news for oenophiles like me: They make their own wine, too. Try KBC’s Regal Lager or homemade merlot with their Texas Sunday feast (available all week long) of brisket, pulled pork, ribs, sausages and all the trimmings. > A lively Irish pub called Tir Nan Og (aka Montes), featuring live jazz on Friday nights, is the centerpiece of historic Prince George Hotel. Try the mini Yorkshire pudding or blarney chips. > Dianne’s Fish Shack and Smokehouse’s smoked trout pâté is an excellent prelude to their 12-hour, house-smoked beef brisket Xocolatl with cocoa coﬀee barbecue sauce, or pulled chicken Tinga with tangy tomato chipotle citrus sauce.

History lives on

One of the 22 National Historic Sites of Canada located in Kingston is Fort Henry. Its complex includes an arsenal of cannons and Snider-Enfield rifles, and it’s one of Kingston’s most popular attractions. The historic fort has round, stone Martello towers that were critical to the defense of the city and the entrance to the Rideau Canal during the War of 1812. Here you’ll find history in motion through military and domestic reenactments of infantry drills, guides in period costumes, fife and drum parades, and the fort’s mascot, David the Goat. In late July, one of Fort Henry’s premiere events is the Annual Tattoo — and they don’t mean for the skin. The Tattoo showcases the drill and musical skills of fife, brass and pipe, and drum bands from around the world. The event culminates in an over-the-top fireworks display. Nearby, the century-old Royal Military College of Canada rests on Kingston’s shoreline, still training officers for the Canadian Armed Forces. The college features a 13-station walking tour, where you can check out the site where Royal Navy warships were built for use in the War of 1812.

A festive air

Kingston is a pedestrian-friendly town, closing off portions of major thoroughfares to vehicular traffic periodically throughout the summer to accommodate foot traffic for special events. July through August, Confederation Park hosts free lunchtime concerts on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays; country music concerts on Thursday evenings; and Big Band Fridays. All of the concerts are free, so just bring your lawn chair. Prominently located behind City Hall, we found flavor literally bursting from local vendor stalls at the historic farmers market at Springer Market Square, where it has operated since the 1780s. On Sunday, the market transforms into an antique fair. Summer also brings free Movies in the Square,

where films are projected on a giant screen every Thursday evening. In the winter, the square serves as the newest cold-weather gathering place when it is transforms into a public skating rink. Our favorite Kingston event by far is the mid-July Buskers Rendezvous, where we witnessed non-stop, amazing performances by talented buskers like Wacky Chad, the Circus Firemen and Ernest the Magnifico, who come from as far away as Australia. Working for free-will offerings from the crowds, these fire-eaters, dancers, jugglers, knife-throwers, musicians, magicians and acrobats take over downtown Kingston streets to the delight of thousands of spectators. July also brings Artfest Kingston, the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest art and craft festival with more than 140 vendors in City Park, and Taste of Kingston, a food and fun event with more than 20 restaurants participating

in Confederation Park. Kingston’s Show ‘N’ Shine Motorcycle Event is held mid-July in front of City Hall with highly-polished production and custom bikes on display. In late August, catch the Limestone City Blues Festival, celebrating 20 years in Kingston. Public performances in Confederation Park, Market Square and Princess Street Stage feature headliners, while a dozen or more clubs have their own stage performances. Shortly after we left Kingston, The Tragically Hip — perhaps Canada’s most iconic band — performed at the Rogers K-Rock Centre, drawing luminaries such as Canada’s Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau. All year long, Kingston’s Grand Theatre is one of the main cultural venues in the region for performing arts, including ballet (like the State Ballet Theatre of Russia), modern dance, theatre, music from rock to classical, and comedy (like Canada’s popular Red Green). Boating really is the heart of Kingston — the city even hosted the 1976 Olympic sailing events. August through September, sailors from around the world gather at Portsmouth Olympic Harbour for CORK (short for Canadian Olympic-Training Regatta Kingston), one of the world’s largest freshwater sailing competitions. Other summer regattas include Optimists, Youth Championships, J/22 Worlds, Olympic Class Canada Senior Championship and National Sea Cadet Regatta. Kingston’s water orientation never stops, with early August’s Thousand Islands Poker Run featuring 60 or more screaming offshores. In early September, the Dragon Boat Festival raises funds for the Boy’s and Girl’s Club to the beat of large Chinese drums. So, no matter what you’re looking for, spend a week in Limestone City; Kingston’s royal hospitality makes for a great on-the-water vacation. ★

he Bayport Marina Association on the St. Croix River in Minnesota offers more than just a convenient dock to tie-up at: It’s a one-stop marina shop. “The marina that thinks it’s a resort” (as its slogan goes) features a combination of amenities, a convenient location and a community that boaters may have trouble saying goodbye to at the end of the day. “We’ve been member owned since 1988,” says Kori Derrick-Cisewski, the marina office manager. “That’s one of the things we pride ourselves on.” Located in a protected harbor, Bayport Marina transformed into the amenities-rich hub it is today after a group of boaters purchased it from private owners. The marina accommodates both sail and powerboats, and offers deluxe features such as: A heated swimming pool, tennis courts, showers, free Wi-Fi, a picnic area, a clubhouse with multimedia equipment, gas grills and a family-owned restaurant called Mallards, which provides dockside delivery. According to Derrick-Cisewski, the marina is also completing a four-year renovation — including decking, electrical and plumbing — to ensure Bayport Marina can accommodate boats big and small.

In addition to mechanical and refinishing services, Bayport Marina also offers help with electronics and has a full canvas department. The marina’s full-service fuel dock offers premium ethanol-free gas, as well as drinks, ice, snacks, maps, sunglasses, hats and apparel inside the “Boatique.” If a new, amenity-rich dock is not enough to entice boaters, perhaps the marina’s practice of offering coffee and donuts might lure people in. Bayport Marina provides a number of family-friendly events and parties to build community at the marina, such as coffee and donuts on Saturday mornings and the annual “Commodores Party.” “It encourages people to come up and talk to us and to other boaters,” Derrick-Cisewski says. If boaters get restless, they can go into town to visit one of the many cafes, or take a trip to Stillwater or the Hudson Bay — two popular boating locations nearby. Of 231 slips, 30 are transient. Derrick-Cisewski recommends boaters call in advance to reserve a slip, especially on holidays. She also says that there are always a few slips available for sale, just in case a boater really doesn’t want to leave. ★

Back in Time

Kevin has always had a soft spot for older, wooden Chris-Craft boats, particularly Constellations. He would always point them out to me when we passed them on the water and at classic boat shows. After many years on small Century runabouts, we decided to change gears and try big boating. We found a great first big boat: A 1967 31-foot Chris-Craft Commander. After a few years, we decided to get a bigger one, so we found a 1969 38-foot Chris-Craft Commander and did a total restoration. A few years later, we sold the 38 Commander and decided to take a break from boating, as we were expecting our second son. Well, that didn’t last very long — maybe a month or so. We missed boating way too much. On our way up to the Hessel, Michigan Classic Boat Show, Kevin quietly told me that he’s going to “look” at a 1964 46-foot Constellation. The boat was stored in a barn and had been out of the water for two years, but that didn’t scare us — she was absolutely beautiful. The boat was way out of our budget, but we were crazy enough to make an offer. “If it’s meant to be, they’ll accept or counter within our budget, right?” Well they did! It was totally unexpected. A month later, papers were signed, money was exchanged, and Kevin, along with two of his buddies, brought the Old Girl home from Hessel down to Lake St. Clair. We made her truly our own by pulling wallpaper, staining the beautiful mahogany interior, fixing boards on the bottom and sides, repainting, tuning up the original 431 Lincoln’s and re-naming her Back In Time, which is how we feel when we’re on our floating cottage during the summer. We’re still excited about her 17 years later. The memories she has given us with our boys over the years have completely filled our hearts with joy!
