Recognizing Innovation

The Miami International Boat Show just wrapped up as we go to press and, wow, what an incredible show it was! I was selected to be a judge for the National Marine Manufacturers Association’s Miami Innovation Awards, where we checked out more than 50 marine products — from boats and electronics to deck equipment and safety items — to recognize and award thoughtful innovations in the boating industry. After getting to see all these imaginative ideas and meet the people behind each of these companies — people who are really working to propel the industry and progress its products — I am very excited for the future of boating! Check out my recap of the show and all the new boat debuts in our Scuttle department (p. 16).

One Michigan man whose hard work and creative thinking helped him build one of the most recognizable boat companies in the nation, John Winn has shared his experience in his new book, “We Gave Your Family Our Best.” Contributor Heather Steinberger speaks with Winn about his life in boating and the origin story of Four Winns (p. 34).

If you’re looking for a port near bustling Chicago but with a slower pace, point your boat toward Waukegan and Winthrop Harbor, Illinois (p. 38). These two harbors offer lots of walking-distance amenities for boaters, beautiful beaches, restaurants, entertainment, as well as the largest marina on the Great Lakes.

Summer is almost here! See you on the water in a few short weeks!

Do you have a story idea you’d like to suggest?

Glass City Metropark, which just opened The Ribbon skating rink and has its grand opening in June, has announced its first restaurant. The Garden, operated by Poco Piatti, will serve Mediterranean bowls, wraps and pitas in a new fast casual concept.

Leadership Charlevoix County (LCC) and Top of Michigan Trails Council (TOMTC) are rolling out a safe new way for bikers and outdoor recreation enthusiasts to connect Boyne City to Charlevoix communities. Over the next few months, LCC participants will be working with TOMTC to develop a trail connector route linking the Boyne Valley Trail to the Charlevoix Trail to provide users a safe route through downtown Boyne City.

“It has been a goal of Boyne City to connect our two fantastic trails and bring outdoor recreation enthusiasts safely through downtown Boyne City. We are extremely excited LCC and Top of Michigan are working together to make this

happen and have no doubt that this project makes Boyne City and Charlevoix County a better place for residents and visitors alike,” says Mike Cain, Boyne City city manager.

Now that the route is selected, LCC participants and TOMTC will be creating a plan for wayfinding signage to guide users along the route, as well as develop informational trailhead signage to direct users to points of interest and local businesses.

Freedom Boat Club Announces Program Enhancements

Freedom Boat Club has announced several new programs for 2023 to enhance its member experience. These include a No-Hassle Membership Transfer, where prospective members can receive a discount on their entry fee if they join the Freedom family from a boat club outside of the Freedom network. Freedom will continue expanding its Amenity Boat Program to more than 25 locations across North America, which allows members to have the opportunity to access larger vessels typically ranging from 25-30 feet. Freedom will also offer weekday-only membership plans at attractive rates to give members the opportunity to enjoy the full benefits of the club Monday through Friday.

Jeanneau Delivers a New Experience in Day Boating

Jeanneau premiered its new DB/37 at the Düsseldorf Boat Show in January 2023, showcasing a premium dayboat that prioritizes exterior space.

“We are happy to add a second opus to the DB Yachts line, just a few months after the successful launch of the DB/43. With DB Yachts, we imagine the yachting of tomorrow while drawing on Jeanneau’s heritage,” says Executive Director Paul Blanc.

Side terraces extend the cockpit while at anchor, and a large aft swim platform provides plenty of space for enjoying the water. The spacious interior layout benefits from a full-beam design with a central island galley to gather round, and below deck, a breakfast point, owner’s cabin, aft cabin and bathroom extend your stay onboard.

Chicago Yacht Club Announces First Female Commodore

Chicago Yacht Club has announced Lisa Curcio Gaston as its new commodore — the first woman to be elected commodore in the club’s 148-year history. A Chicago native, Gaston says she has always loved the water but didn’t get involved in boating until she met her husband in the 1970s. She joined the club in 1997 and has been an avid boater for decades; during the summer months, she even lives on her boat. She has served CYC in a wide variety of capacities, most recently as vice commodore.

Gaston operates her own 52-foot boat and tells women of all ages that boating and sailing are open to them, they can achieve their goals. Professionally, she is a senior mediator and arbitrator for ADR Systems. Gaston was a judge assigned to the Circuit Court of Cook County for more than 16 years and was a practicing attorney for 13 years prior to that. Learn more at CHICAGOYACHTCLUB.ORG.

Shipwreck Society Discovers Wreck off Coast of Lake Superior

The Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society (GLSHS) has announced the discovery of the 144foot barquentine Nucleus, which was found under 600 feet of water around 40 miles northwest of Vermilion Point on Lake Superior.

The Nucleus sank on September 14, 1869, making it one of the oldest ships to go down along Lake Superior’s Shipwreck Coast. The Nucleus was caught in a bad storm on Lake Superior and started to take on water. The leak became so bad the crew had to abandon ship and take to their lifeboat. The Nucleus sank shortly afterwards, with no loss of life.

The Shipwreck Society discovered the Nucleus using a Marine Sonic Technology side-scan sonar in the summer of 2021, and positively identified the wreck in 2022 using the organization’s remotely operated vehicle. GLSHS Director of Marine Operations Darryl Ertel Jr. says he found the wreck to be in surprisingly good condition: “The stern was intact. It had a straight back stern and then the port side also was intact. And so, I was more excited about it because at first, I thought it was totally in pieces on the bottom.”

Great Lakes Boat Building School Welcomes Irish Boat Shop as First Network Member

The Great Lakes Boat Building School (GLBBS) has launched a first-of-its-kind program in the nation, its Marine Dealers Education Network (MDEN), and has named Irish Boat Shop as its inaugural member of this network.

The MDEN is designed to provide an opportunity for marine dealers to influence the industry by impacting the education and development of future marine industry professionals. An MDEN membership is a way for dealers to interact with GLBBS students and build a network for attracting well-trained and prepared graduates. GLBBS has created this program to help address the dire workforce shortage in the Great Lakes region marine industry and beyond.

“We are extremely excited to partner in this unique way with Irish Boat Shop, such a respected and well-known Northern Michigan boat dealer,” says Nikki Storey, president of GLBBS. “This is a classic win-win scenario as we seek to continue placing our students in rewarding careers, and Irish Boat Shop offers our graduates outstanding opportunities for growth and development in their organization.”

ACR’ GlobalFix V5 AIS EPIRB Gets FCC and USCG Approval

During the Miami International Boat Show, ACR Electronics introduced its U.S.-approved mobile connected GlobalFix V5 AIS EPIRB to the market for the first time.

The world’s most advanced EPIRB has received the equipment authorization from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and approval from the U.S. Coast Guard and is now shipping to distributors throughout the country. Already Cospas-Sarsat approved, the beacon exceeds new International Maritime Organization (IMO) Maritime Safety Committee EPIRB regulations for vessels under SOLAS regulations.

Whether cruising, fishing, working or sailing offshore, the next generation EPIRB offers the maximum chance of rapid rescue by providing the advantage of both local and global rescue in an emergency.

The rugged, robust beacon, with 10-year battery life, includes GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) positioning, 406 MHz Cospas-Sarsat distress signal with MEOSAR compatibility and 121.5 MHz local homing signal. By incorporating AIS within its beacons for the first time, ACR Electronics can now offer owners an additional method of communicating their location so that other nearby vessels will also be alerted in an emergency and can respond with immediate assistance. Cutless Care

How to replace your cutless bearing.

What exactly is a cutless bearing and what does it do? A cutless bearing supports the propeller shaft of your vessel while allowing it to turn freely without damage. Cutless bearings are typically made of naval brass with a fluted (grooved) interior rubber lining running the length of the bearing. These grooves allow water to enter the cutless bearing, keeping everything cool and lubricated while the shaft rotates within.

Problems occur when the ridges of these grooves wear down, which both reduces the flow of cooling water surrounding the shaft and introduces looseness or play in the bearing. The former can lead to overheating and shaft scoring, while the latter can cause anything from excessive vibration to shaft and engine alignment issues.

To determine if your cutless bearing needs replacing, look for signs of wear or rubber deterioration. Grab the prop and give it a good, firm shake. Slight shaft movement within the bearing (1 16-inch or so) is borderline, but if you can produce visible shaft wiggle (or worse, an audible “thunk”), the bearing is due for replacement.

This “grab and shake” method works well for most mid-size and smaller boats, but keep in mind that its effectiveness diminishes with larger vessels due to the size and weight of the shaft.

Replacing the cutless bearing

For the purpose of this article, if the cutless needs replacing we’ll assume that the shaft will be removed to facilitate the job. Some yards may offer alternatives, such as pressing the bearing out while leaving the shaft in place; however, many have discontinued that option due to potential problems, such as strut damage, if done incorrectly.

While cutless bearing replacement varies between boats, here are some general steps and procedures that should help with any bearing replacement project.

Remove the cutless bearing set screws. Some boats may not have them, but chances are yours does, although they may be obscured by bottom paint.

Using a hacksaw, make a longitudinal cut inside the bearing, one that almost but doesn’t quite go through the brass bearing casing. This not-quitecomplete cut allows you to easily split the bearing prior to removal, but ensures you don’t cut too deep,

damaging the inside of the strut. Apply even pressure while sawing to make sure the cut is level. If the strut has set screws, placing the cut just above or below them will allow you to thread hex bolts into the holes to assist with breaking the bearing free. If your boat doesn’t have set screws, cut placement isn’t critical.

Split the end of the bearing using a cold chisel and dead blow hammer (taking care not to damage the strut). Once the cut has started to split, insert hex bolts into the set screw holes and tighten evenly, which will finish splitting the bearing and compress it inward (making removal easier). For installations without set screws, bend the initial cut inward slightly with the chisel, then continue to split the bearing by driving a wood or fiberglass wedge between the bearing (near either side of the cut) and the strut. Never use screwdrivers or other metal tools for this, as they could damage the inner surface of the strut. Once the bearing has been collapsed, grasp the bend with a pair of pliers and pull while twisting in the direction of the bend to remove.

Clean the inside of the strut with a green scotch pad and soapy water. Use a fine-grit Emery cloth if needed to smooth burrs from the bearing removal process.

Press the new bearing into place. DIYers can make a simple press using a length of ½- or ¾-inch threaded rod (at least 4 to 6 inches longer than the length of the bearing and strut combined) three nuts and four thick, heavy-duty washers at least ¼ inches or larger in diameter than the strut.

Place a nut and two washers at one end, feed the other end of the rod through the new bearing and strut, then add the remaining two washers and nuts. Use thick washers, otherwise they may “cup” during use, possibly causing the bearing to flare.

Hand tighten the single nut to snug up the new bearing against the strut, which will make it easier to properly align it prior to compression (it has to be perfectly straight, as damage could occur if you try to press it in while crooked). Coating the bearing and inside of the strut with bar soap will help press the fitting into place. Freezing the bearing overnight (causing it to contract) and/or warming the strut with a heat gun (causing it to expand) can also make installation easier.

Once the bearing is pressed into place and flush with the strut, coat the set screws with Loctite and reinstall. ★

Your Boat for a Day

Tips before renting a boat.

Before purchasing a new boat, why not test out a few? Or maybe you don’t have the time to do proper maintenance on your boat before the next family reunion and they all want to go boating. Renting a boat may be the way to go. Here are some things to think about with safety in mind.

Expectation vs. reality

Rentals vary by company and state. Check with friends, local marinas or boater forums for reputable rental companies, as well as online reviews. Study the rental agreement and cancellation policies.

The rental boat should be clean and in working order. Remember that a rental is a loaner, so treat it gently with respect as someone else’s property.

Everything onboard the boat should be “legal,” and companies must adhere to U.S. Coast Guard safety regulations.

Knowledge first

You can typically rent by the hour; however, renting for longer is usually more cost-effective, and full-day rentals may be standard. Advance registration with a credit card deposit is typical but may be nonrefundable, even for bad weather cancellations. Ask that the deposit is applied toward a future rental.

Other things to consider are if there is a return late fee, the boat’s capacity and if dogs are allowed.

Also consider equipment onboard. Can you rent equipment like towables, or do you bring your own?

Request a VHF radio or mounted radio, and know how to use it in an emergency. Also, ask how to handle a problem or breakdown on the water, especially if towing is needed.

Request charts or a chartplotter, and get information on dangerous or off-limit areas.

The renter/captain will need a boating license obtained online before driving the boat. Never go on a boat that doesn’t meet the minimum USCG boating requirements or is without a current registration or boat registration numbers.

Expect a “refundable damage” deposit on your credit card. The renter is responsible for the boat and other property that’s damaged. Finally, as a precaution, check your homeowner policies.

Rental agreements ensure your safety, such as age limits, geographical restrictions, no smoking or grilling, or towable restrictions. Tying up to other boats may be

prohibited, docking off-site may not be permitted, and children under 13 are required to wear life jackets.

What’s included with the fee? How about gas? Is the boat clean and stocked with appropriate serviceable gear? Never assume you know how to use boat equipment, so ask for tutorials.

Locate the first aid kit and the fire extinguisher, and wear the life jackets.

The captain/renter is responsible for the safety of the passengers, which includes following the Rules of the Road, responsible alcohol usage, adhering to rental company policies, USCG boating standards and courteous boating.

States vary in age restrictions to rent boats but all require a valid driver’s license and boating certificate obtained from the U.S. Power Squadrons, Coast Guard Auxiliary or an unexpired commercial license by the state or Coast Guard.

Boat responsibly

1. Check the weather and make an informed decision to go out or not.

2. Allow for one-third tank of gas going out and one-third gas coming back in.

3. Establish a float plan. Get company phone numbers and leave your cell phone numbers.

4. Check current signal devices and for a charged fire extinguisher.

5. Be prepared for outdoor-related problems like sunburn and windburn, bring along medications, and stay hydrated with water.

6. Return the boat early to keep from paying extra fees, and be sure to remove your belongings and trash. Notify the company of any problems you encountered or things that need to be upgraded like refreshing the first aid kit.

7. If you feel the boat isn’t in good condition, return it and negotiate a refund.

Obtain the 86-page U.S. Coast Guard booklet, “A Boater’s Guide to the Federal Requirements For Recreational Boats and Safety Tips.” These are found at most marinas, boat and fishing stores, as well as online. Using some research and common sense, renting a boat for a fun day on the water can be done with safety in mind. The following websites are great resources to review before getting on the water: DCO.USCG.MIL/NAVRULES, RENTALBOATSAFETY.COM and BOATBEAT.ORG. Safety First. ★

LED Lighting Control

Controlling your boat’s LED lights is easier than ever.

Lighting onboard is an often-overlooked feature and a rapidly advancing technology. LED lights are replacing tungsten on many new boats, builds and retrofits, and all for a good reason. They are bright, consume little energy, last a long time and are usually available in limitless colors. Control of LED lights has also advanced rapidly — gone are the days of needing large banks of toggle switches to control them all.

Impressive control

Most quality marine LED lights produced today are sophisticated electronic components with circuitry that can enable control over brightness, color, hue and the ability to ramp up slowly to full brightness when turned on. As these features became available, the wiring and switching necessary to enable these features became complicated, with many circuits and switches required. That is no longer the case with products from companies such as Lumitec, Shadow-Caster, and other quality LED lighting manufacturers.

Many lights made today can be controlled with a simple on-off switch to cycle between colors and intensity. Some switches even remember the last setting and automatically turn to that setting when powered up again. However, attractive options are available if you have a more complex system of lights onboard and want to control them individually or by groupings. With the growing capabilities and more open software architecture of multifunction displays and their expanding compatibility with electronic switching, there are now accessible and intuitive lighting controls available right on the screens you have onboard already. With products such as the ShadowCaster Light Commander and Lumitec’s Power Line Instruction (PLI — a proprietary lighting protocol) technology, the amount of control a boater has with their onboard LED lighting is impressive.

Lumitec options

Operating in conjunction with onboard digital switching, such as Navico’s CZone, all of Lumitec’s PLI-equipped light features are controlled digitally through one set of wires. This drastically simplifies a builder’s need for complex vessel circuitry. These lights have sophisticated software that drives internal circuitry, allowing for digitized controls over existing wires. With digital signals sent down the wires, these digitized systems can monitor voltage, temperatures,

current, line noise and user input, such as color selection, brightness, strobing effect, lighting patterns, dimming and more. By simply programming switches on the multifunction display, a boater can control any function on individual and banks of lights.

Lumitec also offers a digital controller that works in conjunction with its PLI-enabled lights. Called the POCO, it’s a powered four-bank controller that makes installing or retrofitting Lumitec lights with simple wiring easier than ever. Taking the place of four traditional switches, the POCO allows for the control of multiple features through a compatible multifunction display. Connecting to the display through an Ethernet cable, this well-designed little controller also allows for Bluetooth connection and control through a smart device.

Shadow-Caster Light Commander

Taking a slightly different approach, Shadow-Caster developed the first LED lighting controller that utilizes NMEA 2000. Combined with a compatible multifunction display and connecting through NMEA 2000, the Light Commander (SCM-LC) module automatically populates the lighting control software in the MFD that already has the new NMEA lighting protocol within it. The SCM-LC can control up to six zones of lighting and is expandable, and there is an option available for wireless connectivity to a smart device such as a phone or tablet. Each programmable switch on the MFD screen can be customized and can control on/off power, brightness and color. You can also set effects such as strobe, fade or four types of music sync. This plug-and-play controller is compatible with specific Garmin, Simrad, Lowrance, Raymarine and Furuno model displays. It is also expandable to 12 or 18 zones with added modules. The controller has the capability of six instant-on switches that allow lights to power up without the need for the display to be turned on.

As marine LED lights get more robust and complex in their capabilities, the means to control them are becoming easier and more intuitive. While toggling a switch to run through a light’s functions may be straightforward, it’s not as simple or satisfying as having a display with all functions preprogrammed and ready to operate. With a little effort, a boater can light up the night easily and effectively, and even put on quite a show. ★

Dock Talk, Pt. 2

Millboard and aluminum docking solutions for your waterfront property.

If you own property on the water, your dock is a vital part of your boating lifestyle. And choosing the right dock is a big decision, whether you’re new to that lifestyle or are simply seeking a fresh solution based on your family’s unique needs.

Lakeland Boating delved into this topic in the March 2023 issue (p. 26), exploring PVC vinyl as an innovative docking material for waterfront property owners. Due to reader interest, we’re expanding that discussion this month to include Millboard and aluminum.

All about Millboard

Boaters who grew up in the mid to late 20th century are quite familiar with wooden and aluminum docks. We might not be as familiar with newer docking materials like PVC vinyl — or Millboard, a composite material made from polyurethane resin and reinforced with mineral stone.

It looks like wood due to its oak molding, but it most certainly is not.

“Millboard is wood-free and nonporous, and due to the hard Lastane top coat, it’s a great option for docks,” says John Fowler, founder and CEO of St. Paul, Minnesota-based Outlive. “The top coat is heavy-duty rubber, like a

tennis shoe. The rubber coating and unique texture provide unmatched slip resistance when wet.”

Fowler and his family spent several years living abroad, and he became acquainted with the United Kingdom-based Millboard brand and product line. He founded Outlive in 2021, and the company is now the only authorized Millboard distributor in North America.

“The biggest pro to using Millboard for docks is the resistance to water,” Fowler says. “With the patented lost-head fixings, the rubber coating virtually self heals, leaving no exposed screws and nowhere for water and moisture to rot or warp the boards from the inside. And because (the material) is nonporous, it’s highly resistant to mold, mildew and algae.”

As far as aesthetics are concerned, Millboard is hand-molded from real timber, which gives it texture. The molding mimics real wood and ensures variety between boards. Some options, such as Weathered Oak, provide deeper texture for slip resistance than other composite options or even lumber.

Fowler says most customers are looking for a long-lasting dock material that will withstand the elements over time. In addition, they want something that doesn’t require ongoing maintenance like power washing and staining.

“Millboard also resists fading and stains, making it a great option for areas prone to long sun exposure,” he adds.

Millboard is not heavier than lumber, so installation won’t be any more difficult than handling a lumber dock. And once it’s installed, it will last a quarter century or more.

“We offer a 25-year warranty, and the materials used in Millboard are designed to last well beyond the 25-year mark,” Fowler says. “It’s important to understand the lifetime cost of the dock, and the life span before the material will need to be replaced.”

He notes that, while Millboard is able to repel damage from prolonged exposure to moisture, it is not intended to be submerged. Recycled plastic subframe options are available if needed.

The aluminum approach

Known for being durable, cost-effective and environmentally friendly, aluminum docks are a popular solution for many boaters. These docks also are relatively low-maintenance, and they stay cool in the hot summer sun.

One of the experts in this area is Fergus Falls, Minnesota-based ShoreMaster. The company got its start in nearby Carlos, where Dennis Tuel Sr. built the first aluminum boat lift in 1972 and called it a ShoreMaster. His goals were to make the lift easy to install and help lakefront property owners make the most of their time on the water.

“We still have the same purpose, to help you make the most of your time on the water,” says Kelly Heikes, ShoreMaster’s marketing manager. “ShoreMaster docks and boat lifts can be installed yourself. You do not need a dealer to do a yearly install or removal.”

Three types of customers approach ShoreMaster for new docking solutions: Those who are new to lakefront living; those who are adding a dock to a longtime property; and those who are replacing an existing dock. In that last group, the new dock will accommodate either a different boat or an evolving lifestyle.

“We see a lot of experienced dock owners buying larger docks with gathering areas since they know they will use them, understanding how nice it is to enjoy the water,” she says. “You’ll also see experienced dock owners buying more accessories for the kids or grandkids.”

With ShoreMaster’s all-welded aluminum docks, the owner has a lot of freedom with design and accessories. Newbies might start with basic needs, selecting a straight dock or an L-shape design, but Heikes says they’re frequently back a year later to add on and keep growing.

Maintenance involves checking T-handles and screws to make sure they’re not loose. Also, Heikes

says that yearly installation and removal is essential in 99% of cases in the Great Lakes region.

“You cannot leave a dock in the water year round, as it will be damaged,” she explains. “ShoreMaster docks are sectional docks, and they cannot be left in ice or moving ice water. Docks that can’t be removed very easily will require bubbling or de-icing to protect them.”

One limitation for a ShoreMaster standing dock is deep water, 10 feet or greater; the company has floating-dock solutions for those situations. If you choose the right dock for conditions at your property and care for it appropriately, it will last for many years to come.

“Our dock is warrantied for 15 years, but we have seen docks in the water for 30 to 40 years,” Heikes says.

Ready to buy a dock?

Prospective dock owners should ask themselves a few questions before determining which type of dock to purchase:

• What are your lake bed conditions? Is it rocky, sandy, or muddy/silty?

• How deep is the water?

• Are the typical water conditions smooth and calm, or deep and choppy?

• Does the water level stay consistent, or does it fluctuate?

• What vessels and accessories need to be accommodated?

• What other ways will you use your dock?

• How much maintenance are you willing to do?

• Do you understand the preferred dock’s lifespan? Armed with the answers to those questions, you will be ready to make the choice that’s best for you and your family — and enjoy your life on the water.

Seven Seas Venus Speedster

What’s past is prologue.

With a nod back to 1930s boat design and a view of the future, Seven Seas Yachts presents its Venus Speedster. Showing off a daring and unique exterior profile and an impressive interior, she is a guaranteed head-turner wherever she goes.

“Appealing to vintage boat and classic car enthusiasts, the Speedster design is incredibly unique with luxurious elements,” says Kristen Keegan for Spring Brook Marine Group.

To that point, you would be hard-pressed to find any straight lines aboard; instead, your eye will follow all the curves and pleasant cambers from the distinctive stainless steel framed windshield to her bow and stern. The interior is all hand-finished with fine leather seats, carpets and trim — all customizable. Should you wish, the convertible top is easily deployed. Seven Seas has also given her owners the option of picking any hull color, as well as matching it to either a car or yacht.

“Looking at the interior, you can see each detail, from the stitching on the seats to the speakers, has remarkable attention to detail for a boat this size,” Keegan says.

With her good looks comes exciting performance due to a choice of a Rotax 1630 Jet, available in either 170-, 230- and 300-hp and her patented Amfihull. A steep entry transitions to a bottom providing stability and presenting low drag resistance. The Venus Speedster, with her low center of gravity, can result in a WOT speed of 58 mph, according to Seven Seas. The company also claims an average consumption of 8 mpg, making it extremely efficient.

The result of three years of research and development, the Speedster series is ready to take its rightful place in a special section of personal craft well-suited to a wide variety of applications, including exclusive megayacht tenders. ★

36 HARD TOP

untraditionally steeped in tradition

Let’s be honest, there are a lot of boat brands on the market now that may not be familiar. What may look typical is the styling and designs — sleek, go-fast models, as well as stacked deck motoryachts and formidable cruisers. Notable are the many brands that come from Italy.

As a departure from the norm, Fratelli Aprea has landed on our shores from the great boot-shaped country, and it’s a horse of a different color — both literally and figuratively.

LAKELANDBOATING.COM | APRIL 2023 31

HISTORIC CHARM

The styling is courtesy of the gozzo boat technique from back in the late 1800s in Sorrento. Carpenters would build the center of the boat first (seven frames toward the bow, seven frames toward the stern). From there, the curved sections were added to the bow and canoe-styled stern, frame by frame. This method of construction was to ensure proper hydrodynamics of the hull, among other things, by the positioning of the garboard or lowest plank to the shaping of the frames. By adding longitudinal frames, beams and bulkheads, the skeleton of the gozzo is completed, ready for the planking. Post planking, the final steps are applying the colored paints and installation of the “decorations,” such as stanchions, benches, lockers, vents and other detailed components to complete the “aesthetic harmony.”

Today’s Fratelli Aprea boats embrace the nostalgic charm through painstaking artisan work, as evident on the Fratelli Aprea 36 Hard Top (HT). When you look at it, it’s really a floating work of art. As the building materials have changed through the years, now with a solid fiberglass hull, they maintain their seakeeping lines and inherent stability yet are still constructed by hand, not machines.

Riding along on the 36 HT on a near flat Atlantic Ocean offered time to enjoy the smooth ride, beautiful woodwork and finish, as well as

seeing what the twin Yanmar diesel engines kicking 440 hp each could bring to this vessel. Mind you, Fratteli Aprea does not build go-fast boats. What they do, and have done since the beginning, is build seaworthy vessels that are efficient yet safe. For cruising the Great Loop or other rivers, lakes or estuaries, the 36 HT brings a different level of pleasure to your cruise.

At wide open the 36 HT dialed up at 27.5 knots fully loaded, sufficient to beat out foul weather. Dial back to 16.2 knots and consume only 25 gph. This boat is meant for you to enjoy the journey, not just the destination.

ALL HANDS ON DECK

On deck, it’s a simple yet elegant layout. Walkaround teak decks take you from the spacious swim platform to the oversized sunpad on the bow. We Italians like to lounge around, drink wine and nosh on dried meats and fine cheeses all day, and this is the perfect spot to do it. Separated by a teak walking path is a comfy bench seat in front of the pilothouse. I did spend some quality time lounging here, as the bolstered seat and wraparound backrest create a comfortable space.

Having the hardtop allows for a more secure installation for the metal framed, twin-pained wraparound windshield. Giving it a bit of a retro look, the metal frame blends in nicely with the

32 APRIL 2023 | LAKELANDBOATING.COM

polished stainless hull vents and louvered vent covers. Opt for the sunroof for air flow and star gazing. A low-profile radar arch fits nicely on the hardtop and keeps the air draft to a minimum.

Behind the windshield is the starboard helm. Nestled in three separate wood-finished pods is the Garmin multifunction display with dual Yanmar engine monitors in the center pod, flanked by dual pods that house rocker switches and additional electronics. It would have been easier and cheaper to house everything in the fiberglass dash, but Fratelli Aprea carries the classic wood look and feel to every corner of the 36 HT.

Aft of the helm is a wetbar with a teak flip-up top, a fridge and an electric Kenyon grill. An interesting feature is the sink with a hammered finish.

To port is an L-settee and high-gloss teak table. Located under the hardtop, this space keeps guests out of the elements and close to the captain. Aft is a transom curved bench seat that is sufficiently deep to sit or curl up on. Although there is one transom door to the platform for boarding, the 36 HT has a break in the railing on either side to facilitate boarding over the gunwale.

As with most cruising boats, storage space is at a premium, but good builders know how to find it. The 36 HT has nooks and crannies all over, suitable for stashing ground gear, provisions and personal items.

LOOK OUT BELOW

Below decks is a sizable setup for a 36-foot boat. To port is the galley with a two-burner Kenyon electric cooktop with pot holders, a Cuisinart microwave and an Isotherm fridge/freezer. I mention the brand names so you see that Fratelli Aprea sources American appliances for its boats destined for the U.S. market. Need a part or repair, it should be close by. An L-settee is accompanied by a high-gloss wood table.

A raised centerline primary berth is in the peak, with sconce lighting, overhead and side windows, hanging lockers and storage underneath the berth. Hi-low twin bunks are to starboard. A single head features a hammered sink, Tecma toilet and shower head.

Throughout the cabin areas there’s timeless mahogany and holly flooring, high-gloss mahogany and teak wood furnishings, and the finest upholstery and leather materials. Each boat is tailored for the individual customer and no two are the same. Fratelli Aprea takes pride in creating the ultimate expression of the owners’ style.

Looking at the hull details with a very generous bow flare, turned-up bow and high rails, you can still get a historical aspect for the way things were “back in the day.” The sixth generation of Aprea brothers continues the tradition. It’s said that when you buy a boat, you become part of the family. The Fratelli Aprea 36 Hard Top is built with love! H

We Gave Your Family Our B t

At the heart of John Winn’s new book is an enduring love and respect for family, community and hard work.

All companies have an origin story, and in the marine industry, that story is likely intertwined with family history as well. That’s not uncommon at all in this business.

What is uncommon: Taking the time to compile all the memories, anecdotes, facts and figures, and then craft a written narrative that is so compelling, readers can’t stop turning the pages.

When John Winn, co-founder of Four Winns, first sat down to write a book about his family and the company they built together, he thought it might appeal to current and former employees and perhaps the local community in Cadillac, Michigan. He never imagined that “We Gave Your Family Our Best” would resonate far beyond those circles as, quite simply, a great American story.

For the love of boating

Born in 1946, Winn grew up in Greenville, Michigan, in the heart of the Midwest. He and his two older brothers fell in love with boating as children, spending summers with their grandmother Ruby at her home on the Miami River near Hamilton, Ohio.

They started with a wooden rowboat and a canoe, but the throaty sounds from inboard engines at a nearby boat club proved to be a siren call. Winn says he would run down to the dock when he heard them, eager to see the sleek mahogany boats.

Did he ever think, in those days, that he might end up working with boats for a living? Winn chuckles.

“I knew it as a kid,” he says. “It’s all I ever wanted to do, all the way through school. I never thought about doing anything else.”

Winn’s grandmother bought the boys’ first powerboat, a used 1957 molded plywood Trojan runabout with a 40-hp Mercury outboard. Winn says he remembers everything about that day (and the beloved boat still hangs in his iconic Lake Charlevoix boathouse).

From there, the boats and engines got bigger. The boys learned more about how they were built and how they worked. They built and raced hydroplanes. And when Winn graduated from Western Michigan University, he set his sights on the boat companies.

After a stint as a sales associate for Starcraft, he and brother, Bill Jr., worked as sales reps for several small manufacturers — including Saf-T-Mate, a boat company in Cadillac. On August 27, 1975, he, his brothers and their father purchased the company from owner George Spicer.

“With that,” Winn writes, “the four of us were unemployed and self-employed.”

Weathering the storm

The four Winns dedicated themselves to growing and improving Saf-T-Mate. Wife and mother June, now 102, worked alongside them as the honorary fifth Winn.

Just three years into their journey, however, disaster struck. A chopper glass gun self-ignited, and the Winns lost all their manufacturing buildings, their offices and 70 boats in the fire.

Four Winns made waves when they started shipping their boats with trailers. The four Winns at a dealer show several years after OMC purchased the company. Bill Winn Sr. with his wife, June. The Winns lost everything in a catastrophic 1978 fire.
LAKELANDBOATING.COM | APRIL 2023 35
They rebuilt, and in 1980, they dropped the Saf-T-Mate name in favor of 4 Winns.

While they were able to drag 30 completed boats out of the warehouse, this valiant effort damaged the hulls. They would all need to be repaired.

The Winns were bankrupt, no question about it. Yet no one wanted to throw in the towel.

“We talked about it and figured, none of us have jobs, so why not keep going?” Winn remembers. “My only hesitation was whether or not the company could financially support all of us. So we were conservative in the beginning. We took small salaries, we had working wives, and we communicated continually with banks, creditors, vendors. That’s how we survived.”

Personal sacrifices were part of the deal. Bill Sr. already had his net worth invested in the business. All three brothers got rid of their leased cars, opting to share their parents’ vehicles and putting new tires on a 1960 Plymouth Valiant that had come with the Saf-T-Mate purchase.

Winn also sold his lakefront home, which he had remodeled himself. He threw in his personal effects as well, everything except family photos and clothing.

“I no longer owned a fork, a plate, or a towel, but we now had $75,000 to put into the business,” he writes.

He and his wife moved into a 30-foot trailer surrounded by hay bales that they named the “Cando,” which would be home for the next three years.

“You did what you had to do in those days,” Winn says. “Being an entrepreneur has risks, and if you’re going to do it, it takes everything.”

In 1979, as part of their comeback, the Winns changed the company name to 4 Winns by Saf-T-Mate. They dropped Saf-T-Mate in 1980.

That same year, daunting new challenges reared their heads: A global oil crisis, a 10% luxury tax and a government threat to ban weekend boating. But, as they always had, the family pulled together, weathered the storm and continued to build their business.

In the 1980s, 4 Winns became Four Winns. It also became the third largest boat company in America, building 65 boats a day at its facilities in Cadillac and Texas.

It’s about the people

Now 76 and retired, Winn says he misses the people the most. Not necessarily the business travel and trade shows, he acknowledges with a laugh, but the connections with the employees.

“I used to stay late and walk down the lines of the second shift so I could get a feel for what was really going on,” he recalls. “I wanted to talk to them and make sure everyone was happy. I’ve received unbelievable letters from them since the book came out. It’s heartwarming.

“I really do miss motivating people, building rapport, and being part of something where everyone is working for the good of the company,” he continues. “We had three generations at Four Winns, and we were friends with everyone. If one person had to stay, we all stayed, and we had a lot of fun. This is boating… it’s supposed to be fun.”

Over the years, the family created new programs and amenities to care for their employees and make sure their company was a great place to work. For example, they introduced a profit-sharing program and annual “State of the Company” event, which encouraged employees to be more efficient.

“There’s really no unselfish way to motivate people, and we knew profit sharing would be such an easy tool to help the employees understand the business,” Winn says.

They also hired a professional chef for an on-site, subsidized cafeteria. Not only did employees love the food, they took pride in it. In the book, Winn recalls being called out of an off-site meeting for an emergency back in Cadillac.

And it was quite an emergency. Apparently the Cadillac Chamber of Commerce had not given permission for the Four Winns chili recipe to be included in the annual Snow Festival chili cookoff. Winn made a call, the chamber approved the entry, and the cafeteria ended up winning the top prize.

Back then, Cadillac overflowed with locally owned companies. They are, Winn says, long gone.

“In those days, the local Chevy dealer would say, ‘You never have to ask how we’re doing… we’re doing how you’re doing!’” he remembers. “It was small town America. You had loyalty to your company and pride in your community.”

An authentic voice

Although times certainly have changed, the old days come to vibrant life in “We Gave Your Family Our Best.” Readers will catch a glimpse of other companies’ origin stories, recognize familiar characters, and experience the myriad highs and lows of life in the boat business.

“The feedback has been a lot better than I anticipated,” Winn says. “Readers are telling me they laughed out loud. I didn’t mean to be funny; they’re just stories.”

Many of the stories are quite funny, however, and at the heart of them all is an enduring love and respect for family, colleagues, community and good old-fashioned hard work. Winn’s voice shines through every one.

“I write the way I talk,” he says. “I wouldn’t let the editors change my words. This is me.” ★

Where to Buy

“We Gave Your Family Our Best” is available at Horizon Books in Cadillac and Traverse City, Michigan; Round Lake Books in Charlevoix, Michigan; and McLean and Eakin Booksellers in Petoskey, Michigan. It also is available through Amazon.

oint your compass to northeastern Illinois, just below the Wisconsin state border along the Lake Michigan shores. The ports of Waukegan and Winthrop Harbor boast histories extending back to the days of fur traders, canoes laden with goods, settlers, Native American tribes and the trails they made.

As people came in, so did the commerce opportunities and growth. These days, look for a mix of the old and new — while the main draw is still the water.

WAUKEGAN

Waukegan was founded in 1859 and known as “Little Fort,” in deference to the larger Fort Dearborn, south in Chicago. The lakefront was the lifeblood for traders and fishing. By the early 1900s, high atop a bluff, a bustling

downtown grew to become the center of Lake County’s economy. The lakefront and harbor areas were always a constant attraction for recreation and commerce, and continue to be.

Today, the compact harbor area offers walking-distance amenities for long-term summer mooring or day launches. Getting there is easy for a boat and trailer. Just take the Grand Avenue Bridge east to Pershing Avenue, go down the hill to Clayton or Madison streets, and turn into the harbor area. The Waukegan Port District has commercial docks, and the activity centers around the intersection at Harbor Avenue and Madison Street.

With the serene Siver Park nearby, a kitty-corner cul-de-sac has Dockside Dogs and the attached Dockside Ice Cream.

In 1967, a fire destroyed the fog building and tower lantern on the Waukegan Lighthouse. A modern acrylic beacon was then installed on the capped tower.

Picnic tables are scattered around, and Dockside Deli is right across the street. A large white building houses several businesses, including Perfect Imperfection charter and marine services, Harbor Canvas for sail repair and manufacturing, and TowBoatU.S. Around the back, you’ll find the self-pay day launch ramps. Nearby is Bay Marine’s new state-ofthe-art facility, rebuilt after a fire in February 2022. This space provides offices, boat sales, service and storage.

The Waukegan Harbor and Marina operates the day launches and 641 slips, between the north and south harbors. They offer a full-service pier, 24-hour security and shuttle service from the parking lot to your boat. According to Robert Allan Kutzler, operations manager for Waukegan Harbor, many updates are completed, with more

underway. There is a new fuel tank and updated laundry room, plus fiber optics are being installed and upgraded. Dividing the harbor is the famed Waukegan Lighthouse, built in 1899, with an extended pier and fog horn, which is open to tour.

Larsen Marine is on Sea Horse Drive, a one-mile-long roadway leading to the Waukegan Municipal Beach.

“Basically, anything that can go wrong with a boat, we repair,” says Richard Von Helms, an associate at Larsen Marine.

The Waukegan Municipal Beach and North Beach cover 400 acres and include some of the only remaining natural sand dunes in Illinois. The beach is one mile long and is groomed for one thing: Swimming. Soaking up the wind and sun also provides fishing opportunities for anglers trying to hook perch or salmon.

Causal diving and investigating shipwreck sites is a popular sport, and Lake Villa’s Toucan Dive charters excursions out of the Waukegan Harbor. Many World War II training planes from the local navy and air force bases that used the lake for practice lie beneath the waves. There is also the recently discovered wreck of the S.S. Wisconsin, an iron hull passenger and freight steamer that sank off the harbor in 1929.

If you’re searching for other entertainment, retrace your path to the Grand Avenue Bridge, and stroll a few blocks to Genesee Street, the heart of Waukegan’s business district. Walk south and attend a show at the “Grand Ol’ Dame of the Downtown,” the historic Genesee Theater. National touring acts now grace the stage of the town’s only vaudeville house and movie theater still standing.

Across the street, tip your hat to Jack Benny, Waukegan’s favorite son, in a familiar “Well” pose immortalized with a bronze statue at a park square.

Keep walking down the street and there’s La Opera, Three Brothers Theatre (a small stage venue), The Tap Room, and Mama

Jerk N’ Tings Caribbean food. At Water Street, find the Green Town Tavern. “Green Town” is really Waukegan, as depicted in “Dandelion Wine,” a novel of memories by another native son, Ray Bradbury.

Returning to the harbor, stop at Sheridan Road and Washington Street to see the granite edifice of The Carnegie Library, erected in 1903. It was the Waukegan Public Library until 1965 and was frequented by Bradbury. The stone exterior is unique — it’s the only such library built into a hillside bluff.

You can walk down the hill to the Metra Station, easily cross the tracks, and return to the harbor. There is much more to discover at the city’s website (WAUKEGANIL.GOV).

INTERMISSION

Let’s take a break. In Zion, between Waukegan and Winthrop Harbor, is the Adeline Geo-Karis Illinois Beach State Park covering 4,160 acres and offering 6.5 miles of sandy shoreline, dunes, bike and hiking trails, camping, scuba diving and swimming.

“The hiking trails honeycomb the park. Arguably, the best trail at the park

is the Dead River Trail,” says Dr. John Minarcik, a photographer and hiking enthusiast. “It starts near the hotel and goes through some beautiful scenery. The park has a nature center, too.”

Don’t want to “rough it?” The Illinois Beach Hotel has reopened under new management, with cushy rooms, a restaurant with a view of the lake, a gym, a sauna and a pool.

WINTHROP HARBOR

Winthrop Harbor was platted in 1899 and incorporated two years later. It carries the distinction of being the northernmost town in Illinois. It also holds a secret that started with new construction and restoration efforts in the 1980s: The lakefront.

Coming north from Waukegan, along Sheridan Road, it would be easy to miss Marina Drive. Following for just ¾-mile, bypassing the Spring Bluff Forest Preserve trails, the roadway comes to a roundabout. North Point Drive leads to the north and south units of the harbor — a winding route of discovery in either direction.

“This was just too much of an amazing opportunity to pass up, working to promote the tourism of our marina area,” says Village Administrator David Alacron. “When I first came onboard, it was like a kid going to a new school… you know where things are, but you’re always finding a new place.”

The village is home to the North Point Marina, the largest marina on the Great Lakes. It has over 1,500 boat slip rentals, public beaches and recreational facilities. It’s owned by the Illinois Department

of Natural Resources and managed by Dallas-based Sun Tex. There are events all summer long, live music, along with paddleboard and kayak rentals. Relentless Pursuit Sport Fishing and Stormforce Sport Fishing LLC depart from the marina, as does Elmer’s Watersports LLC for scuba diving excursions.

North Point Drive is fun in itself for surveying the large marina and beautifully landscaped breakwaters with access points for boats and protection for the shoreline. Circling the roundabout puts you in front of the Harbor Brewing Co. and Biergarten. The lakefront’s north end has a swimming beach and a loop-drive between the boat slips, where the charter boats also dock.

Oasis Marinas at Battery Park

A bright future along Sandusky Bay.

Before 1984, the marina that is now Oasis Marinas at Battery Park was in disrepair and relatively unused, owned and operated by the city. The Pheiffer family took out a 99-year lease on the property and transformed it into the successful Battery Park Marina. Then, two years ago, a developer took over the marina with plans for a bright — and much bigger — future.

Oasis Marinas at Battery Park is situated in a picturesque spot on Sandusky Bay just minutes from downtown, right across the bay from famed Cedar Point Amusement Park. The marina, which offers seasonal and transient slips as well as a boat brokerage service, is gearing up for a future facelift. Development plans for Battery Park, in the neighborhood of $200 million dollars, include the addition of condos and apartments, a five-story hotel, expanding the existing green space and marina, and improving infrastructure like boardwalk and piers for the public and visitors to better enjoy the space.

Currently, Oasis Marinas at Battery Park offers dockage adjacent to a 5-acre park. A swimming pool, tennis courts, laundry and showers, a ship store and a seasonal outdoor café provide boaters a pleasant place to relax. Nearby, Kelleys Island and Put-in-Bay offer exciting Lake Erie destinations for boaters. It’s the location and offerings that set the marina apart, explains Marina Manager Deb Griffin.

“We are downtown Sandusky. We are right across from Cedar Point, [but] we’re kind of out of the way, we’re nestled back on Water Street,” she says.

The marina regularly hosts events for its slip holders, including a welcome back breakfast in June, a large appreciation dinner in August, and monthly events like a wine and cheese sunset night.

For Sandusky residents, the marina provides the perfect home dockage from which to set out on Great Lakes adventures. For visiting boaters, it’s an inviting place to visit, recharge and provision. ★

Where memories are made.

With five bedrooms and five bathrooms, not only is there space for all, this private retreat also includes a host of features to make the most of lakeside living.

Situated on .71 acres on a peninsula overlooking Spring Lake, private lakeside decks are as expansive and numerous as the views. A paved golf cart path takes you through professionally landscaped grounds, which includes a waterfall, to 256 feet of waterfront, where your private deep-water dock that can accommodate a 60-foot yacht and a 9,000-pound boat lift await. A large over-water deck, lakeside storage shed with an ice maker, running water and stereo, and a fire pit complete the lakefront.

“The sunrises on Dawnview Drive scream ‘Good morning! Let’s take on another amazing day!’” says owner Jon Sorber. “Being able to leave from our dock and go almost anywhere in the world, or just out to Lake Michigan and catch salmon and lake trout has

always been fascinating and awesome. Not to mention, hanging out on the oversized, grandfathered-in deck, over the water, catching bluegill, listening to music and watching the boats go by with a fire in the fire pit.”

Indoors, a large custom kitchen includes Wolf and Subzero appliances, as well as a built-in Miele coffee maker with room around the kitchen island to gather, while the two-story stone fireplace delivers warmth and cheer on those chillier days. A family sized sauna, home gym and bonus room with a theater, pool table and wetbar make staying home the obvious choice. No matter the season, this home is designed to be the ultimate getaway.

“Let’s not take the lakeshore winters for granted either,” adds Sorber. “The original A-frame with two- story stone fireplace/chimney feels like a lodge in the winter. Watching the ice form on the lake while the snow and bald eagles are flying all over the place — it really turns into a winter wonderland.” ★

In August 2022, after a brief search, I received an email from Lyman Boat Owners Association (LBOA) member Bill Shambarger saying he had a boat that I may be interested in. Just looking at the photos and brief description, I knew this boat was special. It’s a 1973 26-foot Lyman Cruisette soft top (RC1652), one of my favorite Lymans of all time — and the favorite boat of the man who designed it, the late, great Tony Giovagnoli. It is modern in all the right places, a new knee/keel, ribs, most of the bottom, a solid mahogany transom and a rebuilt, low-hour 340 Chrysler. The rest of the boat is nearly perfectly preserved to original condition, down to the Pfefferkorn cushions.

26 Cruisettes are a fan-favorite for a reason. They were the culmination of years worth of design tweaks and improvements by Lyman based upon the “new” flared hull style 24 for the 1961 model year, which evolved into the 25 Sleeper for 1963 and then the direct predecessor, the 25 Cruisette in 1966. Starting in 1967, Lyman marketed the 26 Cruisette as “the ideal family boat” and “a big boat in the medium price range.” The 26 is slightly beamier and deeper than its predecessors and was designed to be a bit lower maintenance with a 5200-like polysulfide caulking between the bottom planks to minimize leakage, paper veneer on the hullside planking to extend the life of topside paint jobs by preventing checking, and teak plywood decks and windshields, which limited the amount of varnishing required. Power options also improved to V8 Ford-based Interceptors, Chrysler 318s, 340s and GM-based Crusaders up to 270 hp by

the end of production. By the early ‘70s, the 340 Chrysler and 250-270 hp Crusaders made for optimum performance, and to this day, there are few boats as seaworthy and fuel efficient in this size range anywhere.

One of my favorite things about this boat is that Bill was the original owner, having ordered it new from Lyman through Gem Beach in Catawba Island, Ohio, in the fall of 1972. He took delivery of it in mid-April of ’73, paying around $10,000 out the door. Bill has bought, owned and sold several Lymans over the years but always held onto this one, maintaining it to a very high level for just shy of 50 years — incredible! When the boat was being built, Bill visited the Lyman factory every couple of weeks to monitor the progress and took photos along the way. The photos are a rare firsthand glimpse inside the factory during the transition from wood to fiberglass.

After inspecting the boat with my wife and son, we agreed to a purchase price and set up a sea trial the following week. Arriving at Bill’s marina in Catawba, the bilge was bone dry, and the boat performed wonderfully on the sea trial to seal the deal. As Bill and I sat at the dinette to sign the paperwork, his hand became shaky; it was understandably an emotional day for him. Bill was only 30 years old when he took delivery of his brandnew boat. Newlywed and having a young family, he must have felt quite accomplished at a relatively early age. A half-century later, I find myself at a similar junction in life, feeling extremely proud and looking forward to many memories in the years ahead on Bill’s boat.

—Ryan Nagel, Lyman Boat Owners Association Commodore, Avon, OH
