HOBIE MirageDrive

®

THE MOST EFFICIENT WAY TO MOVE ON WATER

Hobie’s MirageDrive was born of the theory that it’s easier to push something with your legs than it is to pull it with your upperbody. On Hobie Mirage® Series kayaks, two pedals—fitted to levers just forward of your seat—are attached to powerful underwater fins delivering efficient power while keeping your boat tracking evenly. Simply slide the MirageDrive into its well, lock it in place with its “Click and Go” system and you’re off on a Hobie adventure.

• Harness the power of your leg muscles creating stronger, more efficient propulsion. • Propel your kayak without using your hands, leaving them free for fishing, photography, or enjoying a drink. • Adjustable pedals accommodate taller or shorter kayakers. • MirageDrive fins lay flush against the hull for kayaking in shallow water or beaching. The largest bowrider in the Stingray line, the 250LR rides on the company’s proven Z-Plane Hull that allows it to reach speeds in excess of 50 mph with only 320 horses pushing her along. She’s the perfect dayboat for family and friends, whether you enjoy tying up for an afternoon of hanging out or hanging on, assuming you fancy watersports like skiing and wakeboarding. No matter your preferred pace, the 250LR offers something for everyone — and her conversational cockpit keeps everyone close to the action, regardless of how fierce or laid-back it might be.

Summertime, and the boating is easy T

he Rideau Canal was completed in 1832. It took 6 years to build. The canal runs from Kingston, Ontario to Canada’s capital city of Ottawa, a distance of roughly 125 miles. It ranks among the greatest civil engineering feats of the 19th century. The canal has been connecting communities along the Rideau Heritage Route for almost two centuries. Originally built as a commercial venture moving people and goods, today the major activity on the Rideau Canal revolves around recreation. Kim Lunman is an award-winning Canadian journalist and Lakeland Boating contributor who has done a wonderful job writing a piece for us this month on the Rideau Canal. After reading her article (page 34), there’s no question I plan to add this destination to my future cruising list! In addition to her writing, Kim also is the publisher of Island Life Magazine (islandlifemag.ca). The joys of boating in the freshwater of our beautiful Great Lakes cannot be overstated. But the lack of salt in our sweetwater seas does exacerbate one potential danger that many folks might be unaware of: Electric shock drowning, or ESD. This is a very real safety concern — and one that must not be taken lightly. A few years ago my wife, Linda, and I were tied up at a marina and witnessed a 35-year-old woman innocently dive off the bow of a 23-foot runabout. We were later informed that she had been electrocuted literally feet from the boat. There had been an on-duty policeman stationed not too far away from where this occurred. Apparently he dove in and swam towards the woman until he hit the electrical field surrounding her. He made his best effort to save her, but

unfortunately it was too late. She did not survive. It turns out the boat was plugged into a power pedestal at the marina that was supplying more electricity to the boat than it could handle, and the excess juice was being leaked into the water surrounding the vessel. Serious stuff, but a topic thoughtfully explored on page 30 of this issue by Chris Dolan. Chris works with marinas on a daily basis, helping them ensure their facililties are safe for all boaters, and he was the perfect person to highlight the dangers of ESD for Lakeland readers while also offering valuable tips on ways to stay safe. On a lighter note, check out contributor Gary Reich’s article on fun “toys” to bring aboard your boat this summer (page 32). Gary explores everything from inflatable and rigid kayaks to tubes, SUPs and folding bicycles. Summer’s in full swing. Have fun and stay safe out there!

Riley & Annie Meet Riley and Annie; they are Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. Annie (right) has been boating with us since she was a puppy (today she is 6 years old). We adopted Riley (left) from a rescue organization in February. They both have eye issues and need to wear the protective Doggles. Although they don’t like them much, they tolerate them for a ride in the dinghy. Our home port for our Cruisers 3470 is Menominee, Michigan. After a very long winter, we were grateful for a sunny and warm Memorial Day weekend. We think Riley is adjusting to boating very nicely. —Steve & Suellen Inglese, Iron Mountain, MI

Kelsey Kelsey is our rescue miniature poodle. He loves boating and seeing all his dog friends on the dock and at The Crews Nest in Put-in-Bay, Ohio. He is sad in this picture because of the rain and hail. His name comes from the Kelson, which is a beam in a wooden sailing ship that helps support the keel. —John & Holly Hall, Sagamore Hills, OH

Izzy Izzy, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, is always looking to lend a hand (or rather, a paw!) on our Tiara 260, the Lucky Seven. Here she is helping me navigate back to our home port at Huron Lagoons Marina in Huron, Ohio. —Keith Koberna, North Ridgeville, OH

breakwater chicago gains Public support

To take advantage of the fleeting Michigan summer months, the 5th annual Boating and Outdoor Festival at Lake St. Clair Metropark has been moved up a week to September 11-14, the Michigan Boating Industries Association (MBIA) announced. Could a floating city become Chicago’s next Bean? The multi-million-dollar pitch to build a floating city half a mile off Chicago’s shoreline, called Breakwater Chicago, is quickly gaining public support. The crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter for Breakwater Chicago reached its $30,000 goal within 36 hours, according to a recent report published in the Chicago Tribune. Within 10 days of being posted to Kickstarter, the pitch had more than $39,000 pledged. Breakwater is planned as a “luxury yacht meets island resort” — a floating vessel 300 feet long by 100 feet wide, boasting amenities such as a pool, spa, retail shops, bar, restaurants, and a lounge. The project’s creators say they hope to open Breakwater Chicago just prior to the start of Summer 2015. The project will cost an estimated $23 million. For more information, visit kickstarter.com and search for “Breakwater Chicago.”

electric ride Last October, the Lakeland Boating staff spent a warm, sunny, fall day out on a Duffy Electric Boat, courtesy of our good friends at Chicago Electric Boat Company. Publisher/ Captain Bing O’Meara took staff on a sightseeing tour through the Chicago River and around some of the city’s most famous architectural landmarks. It was an awesome experience — totally unique from the water’s vantagepoint — and one we highly recommend! Rinker Makes Comeback at Maple City Grand Prix

beaconmarinellc.com.

Before you can win a race, first you must finish — and what a fantastic finish for Tampa, Florida’s Terry Rinker the 2nd Annual Maple City Grand Prix in LaPorte, Indiana, which took place May 30-June 1. Rinker’s Aero Slot Lee hull lost a propeller blade on lap 5, and he dropped to second place during the 35-lap final heat race on Indiana’s Stone Lake. On the final lap, Rinker made a pass on race leader Tim Seebold, in his NGK sparkplug-sponsored Seebold hull, on the inside of the “dogleg” right-hand turn #5 to take the lead and score the win at Maple City. It doesn’t get more dramatic than that! — Paul Kemiel

BRP Introduces New Evinrude G2 Outboards With 75 percent fewer total regulated emissions, 15 percent better fuel efficiency and 20 percent more torque than leading four-stroke engines, BRP’s says its new Evinrude E-TEC G2 outboard engine is a force to be reckoned with. The engine offers a customizable look and delivers clean rigging and fully integrated digital controls. It was unveiled at a BRP media event held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in mid-June. “This engine stands alone, in the industry and on the water,” says Chris Dawson, BRP vice-president and general manager of global sales and consumer experience. “Until now, achieving these levels of performance and integration was unheard of. Add to this the fact that this engine produces, by far, the fewest emissions of any outboard engine on the water, and it’s clear to see why the new Evinrude E-TEC G2 engines will change the face of boating.” For more information, visit eviNrudeNatioN.CoM.

Minor Changes Name to Sargo Finland boatbuilding company Sarins Batar Oy Ab built boats under the Minor name since the 1960s, but the company recently announced it will continue operations under a new brand name, Sargo.

Linking the family name “Sarins” with the dynamic verb “go,” and also paying respects to the Sargo fish, the company says it derives multiple meanings from the new name. “The new name transforms decades of accumulated know-how to our well-grounded visions of the future of environmentally responsible pleasure boating,” says company founder Edy Sarin. To date, the company has built nearly 2,000 boats for buyers in 15 countries from 25 to 36 feet. For more information, visit SargoboatS.CoM.

Beneteau Group Acquires Michigan’s Rec Boat Holdings French luxury yacht manufacturer Beneteau Group recently acquired U.S.-based Rec Boat Holdings (RBH), manufacturer of the Four Winns, Glastron, Wellcraft and Scarab boat brands. Beneteau Group builds large yachts in Europe and wanted to expand into the North American market. “After launching sales of motorboats more than 12 meters in 2010, the group is embarking on the second phase of its project, with motorboats under 12 meters, which requires an industrial investment in America,” Beneteau representatives said in a statement. “On its own, this segment accounts for nearly 40 percent of the overall motorboat market in the United States.” RBH, based in Cadillac, Michigan, has revenues of around $150 million and currently employs 475 people, with a network of more than 200 dealers across North America. In 2010, Platinum Equity bought RBH from bankruptcy assets and moved manufacturing of the Glastron brand from Minnesota to Cadillac. Platinum invested more than $9 million, enabling RBH to add 35 new models of Four Winns and Glastron boats and introduce a new Scarab line of jet boats. Current management of RBH will remain in place for an extended period and the company will likely continue building boats in Michigan. For more information, visit beneteauusa.com.

Whitby, Ontario Small-town atmosphere meets urban amenities.

T

wenty-three miles from the bustling city center of Toronto, Ontario lies the charming town of Whitby on the coast of Lake Ontario — a “small-town friendly atmosphere with all the amenities of a large city,” according to Port Whitby Marina supervisor Keenan Watters. The lakeside town, with a population of about 131,000, has won numerous Communities in Bloom contests and recently scored attention from MoneySense magazine as being the “10th Best Medium-Sized City in Canada.” “We are so proud to rank in the top 10,” says Whitby Mayor Pat Perkins. “Whether you prefer an urban, rural or lakeside setting, Whitby is an exceptional place to live, raise a family and do business.”

Historical harbor Back in the 1800s, Whitby was a hotbed for exporting grain from local farmers and importing materials for builders. According to Watters, Whitby once rivaled Toronto in terms of commercial shipments, with scooters regularly coming into and going out of the harbor. But these days, the harbor is a bustling hub for recreational fishing and boating. “The harbor evolved into a much more recreational harbor in the past 30 years,” Watters says. “What we’re left with is a nice entry. Since ships were coming into the harbor, recreational boats have no problem getting in — Whitby harbor has a nice, wide entrance and is very deep.” Whitby is a great stop for anglers, with public boat ramps right in Port Whitby. According to Durham Tourism, prime-time fishing in Durham Region is pretty much all the time, and there’s always a “bite” going on — in summer and winter. “For those who enjoy angling, we are known for salmon and trout fishing,” Watters explains. “We even host the Great Ontario Salmon Derby July 5 to August 23 (greaTOnTariO salmOnderby.ca).”

award-winning marina Located at the western end of Whitby Harbor is Port Whitby Marina. With 420 slips, this award-winning marina is one of the largest on Lake Ontario. The marina first opened in 1978

and in recent years has undergone significant renovations, including a 6,100-square-foot clubhouse and construction of the Audi Lounge. The marina is a top-notch facility, offering free newspapers, propane grills and kayaks and bikes for rent, along with gas, diesel, ice and pumpout services. The marina also boasts a public launch ramp and private washrooms, showers, kitchen and laundry facilities for visiting boaters. “We have nice gardens in the summertime and high- quality facilities,” Watters says. “The harbor is one of the best on all of the Great Lakes for boating. We are told regularly that it’s the nicest facility of its kind on the lake.” In 2012, the marina won the Robert Eaton Environmental Award of Excellence in Environmental Practices in the marine industry for its outstanding recycling efforts. “We’ve always been a top-rated marina, so we take it quite seriously,” says Watters. “Recycling is a big thing that we try to lead the pack on. We also have a lot of energy efficient elements that our boaters have bought in, too, and they are respectful of the environment.” A centerpiece of the community, the marina hosts events year round, from annual fireworks on Canada Day to Dragon Boat Races and a Parade of Lights during Harbour Day on July 26. Across the harbor from the marina is the Whitby Yacht Club (Wyc.ca), which has offered racing, cruising, social and sail training programs on Whitby Harbour since 1966. WYC offers transient slips for visitors and pump-out services.

Whitby-style recreation For some land-based entertainment, Whitby is home to a spectacular 3.5-mile waterfront trail that stretches from Toronto to Kingston with picturesque views of Lake Ontario. The Lynde Shores Conservation Area is another beautiful location in Whitby for some nature sightseeing. Almost anything you need is within walking or biking distance in Whitby. There’s a new Metro Plaza with groceries, wine, drug store, coffee shop, café and more. To get around town, Whitby also has GO Transit (gOTransiT.cOm), which can get you to Toronto’s Union Station in about an hour. For some local Whitby fare, stop at the new KB Food (kbfOOd.cOm), which supports local farmers, or The Lake

corke board | by Mark Corke

Stroke of Luck Take the guessing game out two versus four stroke technology.

O

utboard motors are everywhere. Most boaters have operated a boat with an outboard hanging off the transom at some point during their boating careers. Even if you generally cruise in a larger boat that has an inboard engine or sails as the main means of propulsion, there’s a good chance that the dinghy you use getting to and from the dock has a small outboard on the back powering you along. In their simplest form, outboard motors are completely self-contained units that clamp onto the back of small or mid-sized craft, including inflatables or rigid tenders. Rumor has it that the outboard was invented by a young man named Ole Evinrude more than 100 years ago. Others may dispute this claim and cite that it was actually a Frenchman who demonstrated an electric outboard some 15 years previously. Whatever the true story, there’s no doubt that outboards have been around for a century or

Evinrude

Honda

more now and are a common sight at the local marina or launch ramp. Mercury, Yamaha, Honda, Evinrude, Suzuki, and many other common household names in marine propulsion now permeate the lakes. Outboards come in a range of horsepower ratings, from small, 2.5 hp motors weighing somewhere around 20 pounds to large, 350 hp behemoths capable of propelling large boats at breathtaking speeds.

Two versus four stroke While it’s possible to buy electric and even propane-fueled outboards, by far the majority of outboard engines are juiced by gasoline. Gasoline outboards fall into two categories: Two stroke or four stoke. Broadly speaking, the main difference between a two stroke and four stroke engine is that with a two stroke outboard, oil mixes with the gasoline, lubricating the engine’s moving parts before it’s burnt in the cylinders. With a four stroke motor — the type that you have in your car — oil is contained in a sump or the lower half of the engine; it remains in the engine unburnt, thus requiring oil changes when the motor is serviced. Other significant differences are that with a two stroke motor, every complete revolution of the engine is considered one power stroke; with a four stroke motor, every other complete revolution is a power stroke. Four stoke motors tend to be slightly more complex, have more moving parts and are typically heavier than a two stroke motor of a similar horsepower rating. This weight differential is changing, however, and in truth, with today’s motors, the weight of a two stroke versus a four stroke motor is less of an issue (meaning four stroke engines are lighter than they used to be). Another noteworthy difference is that four strokes tend

to be quieter and operate more smoothly than their two stroke counterparts. But when it comes to price, two strokes are often less expensive than a four stroke of the same horsepower rating. The “big four” manufacturers in the world of marine outboard engines are Mercury, Yamaha, Honda and Evinrude. All of these companies make both two and four stroke engines, with the exception of Honda, which exclusively builds and manufactures four strokes. Yamaha’s two stroke offerings in the U.S. are limited to the V MAX engines in 150 and 175 hp outputs. Evinrude, on the other hand, is fully committed to two stroke technology and offers its popular rage of E-TEC motors as proof. The company, a division of BRP, just released a brand new line of E-TECs called G2 in mid-June.

So this begs the question: Which type of motor is right for you? The short answer is it all depends. Normally the manufacturer of your vessel will specify the maximum or recommended horsepower output that makes sense on your particular boat. You should compare engines from all

area that cannot only sell you the engine, but who can service it for you after the sale? Talk to other owners and get their opinions. Search web forums and see what people are saying about an engine you may be considering. Some smaller lakes do not allow two stroke motors, so that also may factor into your thinking. If you can sea trial an engine you are considering buying, most of the major manufacturers all have a strong presence at boat shows and can often arrange for you to see the motor in operation. Buying an outboard represents a significant outlay of cash, so shop around for the best deal; but don’t shop on price alone. These days, I believe there’s little difference between modern two and four stroke motors. Long gone are the days of hard-to-start engines that oiled their plugs at the drop of a hat. Today’s motors are long lasting, reliable and will provide you with many years of enjoyment if properly maintained. As a generall rule, however, if you want fast acceleration

of the major outboard manufacturers to determine what feels right for you and the way in which you use your boat (cruising, fishing, watersports, etc.). Compare specifications. Is there a dealer network in your

and the most power from the lightest weight engine possible, opt for a two stroke. If, on the other hand, you want the quietest possible motor and are less concerned about speed, a four stoke may suit your needs better. LB

A Clean Break How to install a transom shower on board.

D

espite that old saw about getting there being half the fun, when it comes to boating everyone knows the fun really begins after arriving at that favorite anchorage. The kids want to go paddling, the dog wants to chase ducks, and hairy Uncle Joe visiting from New Jersey wants to go swimming. The downside to all this fun is dealing with the sand and muck tracked on board — unless, of course, you’ve installed a transom-mounted shower to rinse off. Here’s a look at what’s involved with installing a transom shower and tips on making the project go smoothly.

Getting started Transom showers can be plumbed to use “raw water” directly from the lake or tapped into your boat’s freshwater system, which can mean both hot- and cold-water options for those with water heaters. Even boats without a water heater can install an engine heat exchanger (such as those offered by Heater Craft, heAterCrAft.Com), allowing them the option of providing a hot water shower as well. What you don’t want to do is plumb your shower into your engine’s raw water exhaust system for hot water, an unsafe practice that can result in serious health risks due to the presence of Carbon Monoxide (CO). Although you can piece a system together, the simplest way to install a transom shower is by purchasing a kit. The parts provided in these kits may vary slightly, but most will contain a recessed enclosure, showerhead or nozzle and a length of retractable hose, and dual valves for hot- and cold-water control.

Installation materials Installation of a transom shower is pretty straightforward. Start by gathering a few basic tools, such as a tape measure, pencil, drill, bitts, jigsaw, wrenches, channel lock pliers, screwdrivers, and a hose cutter or sharp knife. As for parts, you’ll need two barbed hose “T” fittings and appropriate lengths of hot- and cold-water hose, stainless steel hose clamps, and a tube of marine-grade silicone sealant. First up is choosing the best place to locate the shower. Look for a flat surface near the swim platform, transom or cockpit — one that has enough depth behind it to accept the shower enclosure and enough room in front to allow the enclosure’s lid to swing open. Double check to make sure that you won’t be cutting or drilling into wiring, cables, etc. Select a location that allows the shower to reach a convenient height for ease of use. At the same time, you’ll

want to avoid areas above electrical equipment or other such items. Accessibility to the area (to run the hoses, for example) also must be considered.

mounting and plumbing Once you’ve found that perfect spot, next up is mounting the enclosure. Most shower kits will include a template to assist with cutting the hole, but you also can make your own by tracing the outline of the enclosure. Place the template where you want to mount the enclosure, tape it in place and cut the hole. When cutting and mounting in solid fiberglass, apply a bead of sealant around the inside flange of the enclosure (where it meets the hull) to seal out water. If the area is of cored construction (balsa, plywood, etc.), you’ll also have to seal the edges of the hole with thickened epoxy to protect the coring from water intrusion. The same holds true for the mounting screw or bolt holes. After the hole is cut, dry-fit the enclosure, drill the mounting holes and install mounting hardware (to ensure proper fit), then remove. If adequate access exists behind the enclosure, you can mount it now and connect the water system hoses afterwards. If not, you’ll have to plumb the shower prior to mounting. Let’s assume you have plenty of access and want to mount the enclosure first. Start by applying a liberal bead of caulking along the mounting flange. Install the enclosure and tighten the mounting hardware until caulking begins to ooze out, then stop. Most DIYers want to crank down until whatever they are mounting is tight; however, this approach squeezes most (if not all) of the caulking out. A better approach is to snug it up and let the caulking cure first, allowing the caulk to form a gasket that provides a better seal. As a final touch, remove the mounting bolts or screws one at a time and coat the threads liberally with sealant prior to that final tightening. Once the enclosure is mounted and the shower assembled, next up is plumbing the system. Start by locating the nearest access to the vessel’s hot- and cold-water system that provides the shortest, straightest run possible to the new shower. Once you’ve located a promising spot, turn off the water pressure pump, cut the hoses and install the “T” fittings (securing each with stainless steel clamps). Then run the hoses back to the shower, supporting them with wire ties and mounts or cushioned stainless steel clamps every 12 to 16 inches or so. Finally, once everything is connected, power up the water pressure pump and inspect the system for leaks. Now you’re ready to hose down the kids, the dog and Uncle Joe. LB

AuGust 2014

Transom shower kits, like this one from Scandvik (below) make installation fairly straightforward. If you’re looking for a hotand cold-water shower but don’t have a water heater on board, fret not; purchasing an engine heat exchanger from a company like and Heater Craft (top left) will do the trick.

LaScala: Kover Klamps offers our unique Ultra Kover, which is a three-ply laminate with rip-stop mesh embedded in the material.

LaScala: The Ultra Kover is UV stabilized for an average life span of 5 to 7 years.

LB: How does the Ultra Kover differ from other covers?

LaScala: The Kover Klamps frame is constructed of inexpensive, ¾-inch EMT galvanized electrical tubing. It is readily available at any hardware store or electrical supply.

LaScala: It’s different in that it does not have grommets. Instead, it uses the Kover Klip that is many times stronger and more versatile because it can be placed anywhere on the cover. Also, unlike other covers, the Ultra Kover is custom cut to any length or width the customer might need.

LB: How long does it take to put it together?

LB: How much does the system cost?

LaScala: It can generally be constructed in one afternoon. Large boats will take slightly longer. We supply an instructional DVD with each kit and the video can be seen on YouTube.

LaScala: The Kover Klamps system starts as low as $119. The average 30-foot express cruiser frame is $312. Ultra Kover starts at $0.25 per square foot. LB

LB: What kind of tubing is needed?

haparral raised a lot of eyebrows last fall when the company announced it was entering the jet boat market — not by building a jet boat, it said, but by adding jet power to a line of boats that’s classically Chaparral. Combining a supercharged, 250 hp Rotax engine from BRP with an all-new sport hull design, Chaparral’s jetpowered Vortex 203 VRX offers spirited performance and upscale creature comforts. With its distinctive folding arch tower with ski mirror and eye-catching graphics, the Vortex 203 VRX boasts a long list of standard features, including a premium stereo, in-floor ski storage, a full wraparound walk-through windshield, bow seating with a full wraparound backrest, bow anchor locker, snap-in carpet, and a color-coordinated Bimini top. “We like to say we’re not building a jet boat, we’re building a Chaparral with jet power,” says Jim Lane, Chaparral president. “We looked at what was available in this market and asked, ‘Great, but how do we make this a Chaparral?’ You can see cues from our entire product line in the styling and handling of the Vortex, and most of all in terms of quality and safety.” One example is the U-shaped cockpit lounge seating, which includes Chaparral’s innovative Oasis port-side

he term “retro” means backward or “in past times.” Well, Webster, pay attention. Next to the word “retro” in the dictionary should be a picture of Hunt Yachts’ Harrier 25 Sport. This is the epitome of a retro design with modern amenities. Call it a day cruiser, tender, gunkholer, overnighter… whatever. Just don’t call it ordinary. With a solid sheer from stem to stern punctuated by a big, integrated, wraparound windshield with vents, the Harrier 25 Sport also is recognizable by her elegant arched transom, flat foredeck, pronounced lifting strakes, and overall sporty appearance. A solid ride comes from the rough water-bred E-glass bottom, with foam-cored topsides for sturdiness and weight reduction. Cored stringers and bulkheads below and E-glass laminated molded deck create a high-integrity, structurally rigid hull and deck structure. The cockpit sports wraparound seating and center-post table, along with an entertainment system with sink, fridge/

To starboard is the upholstered low profile dash with Garmin chartplotter and Fusion stereo. Chrome-ringed analog gauges, ICOM VHF radio, rocker switches and Volvo Penta engine display are neatly spaced around the helm. Forward is a cuddy cabin complete with convertible V-berth, marine saltwater head, locker, faux teak and holly flooring, and overhead Lewmar hatch with screen. Retro looks don’t mean retro power, however. The Hunt Harrier 25 Sport’s standard propulsion is a single Volvo Penta EVC 5.7 320 hp gas engine with OceanX sterndrive and counter-rotating, stainless, three-blade props. Opt for the Volvo 380 hp or 430 hp gas engines, Volvo D-4 diesel or Yamaha 300 hp outboard engine upgrades. “We strategically designed the Hunt Harrier 25 Sport to provide an exceptional quality, no-frills value, delivering what all boaters need for a day on the water — and nothing that they don’t,” says Peter VanLancker, Hunt Yachts president. Additional features include a fiberglass swim platform, anchor locker, Pantograph wipers, transom locker and shower, pop-up ski tow pylon, Bimini top, and more. Hunt’s marketing materials describes the Harrier 25 Sport as “the ultimate classy, supremely seakindly, wash-and-wear boat.” Get into the Harrier 25 Sport. You’ll wear it well. LB

What two forces make it possible to love my pickup truck Monday through Friday, but compel me to borrow her BMW on the weekends? As a breeze teases a few beads of sweat, you dig deeper. What caught my eye about this boat? Put in layman’s terms, it means that first impressions really do count. Opinions we form in the first few minutes after meeting someone play a major role in determining the course of the relationship. Roots of the bRand Fans of Stingray may already know its founder, Al Fink. Describing him as an independent boatbuilder would be dismissive. Better pull out the thesaurus and add all of the synonyms: Self-governing, free-thinking, confident. And I’ll add one more: Innovative. Performance and accountability is what drives this guy, not surprising since he spends free time tinkering with dragsters at Darlington, near the Stingray plant in Hartsville, South Carolina. With a passion for gadgets, Stingray has been an early adopter of disruptive technology in all aspects of boatbuilding. The company pioneered multiple axis, large-bed CNC (computer numerically controlled) water-jet machines that cut a wide range of different materials to tolerances within thousands of an inch. Fink is fond of saying, “Quality starts with accountability.” Poke your head in his office, and you’ll understand why. A wall-sized projection screen displays a constantly updated spreadsheet tracking every single employee, part, even staples that pass through the plant. “If a problem arises, we can pinpoint the cause and immediately take action,” he says. “This thing even calls me at home when there is a problem.” But the computer couldn’t tell Fink about buyers’ changing tastes in boats. That job fell to his new COO, Erik Nordin. In Europe, where Stingray had a solid track record of success, customers were leaning towards warmer colors in vinyl materials. Two and three tone-on-tone styling that’s part of the redesign in the 250LR is indicative of styling that resonated with buyers. The boat needed curb appeal to even gain consideration, and Nordin knew the design had to be inviting — telegraphing “this is the place to be.” a Re-envisioned bowRideR A full color band or stripe in the gelcoat was an engineering challenge. Fluid curves resembling a dolphin jumping waves is easy to create on the computer, but much harder to perfect on the shop floor. The blend and contrast of

colors is part of that Predictive Outcome Value Theory, part of that “love at first sight” fascination. Nordin admits that with the dramatic interior changes he was proposing and the stripe line addition, he expected stiff resistance not just from Fink, but the legion of Stingray dealers. He met with the gelcoaters to get their buy-in, tweaked the molds and built one boat that was all black, including the windshield. Off to a corner of the assembly building it sat for the team to study and for visiting dealers to ponder. Days ticked by. One by one, suggestions rolled in. The resistance was melting like ice in Lake Michigan on a spring day. Dealers spoke of customers’ desire for day boats, with generous entertainment space and more seating. It all played nicely into Nordin’s vision for a wraparound, U-shaped bench seat that creates a communal atmosphere in the cockpit. With a built-in refreshment center featuring freshwater sink, overboard drain, removable 25-quart cooler and optional table, all of the basics we expect to see in a large bowrider were now there. Forward of the helm station, two shapely and decoratordesigned loungers are sure to be claimed by teenagers. They even have their own built-in cooler right at the bow. Of course, kids and water are going to mix, and like so many models today this Stingray meets expectations with a fully integrated swim platform, ample room for dangling your feet in the water, or simply getting ready for skiing, wakeboarding or tubing. Like many mid-size bowriders, this model is fitted with a concealed Porta Potti opposite the helm. Two modestly priced upgrades add a sense of sport and elegance: A custom Italian steering wheel and Latte dash package. Both features undoubtedly influenced by Fink, who has a penchant for vintage automobiles. Designers have thoughtfully left room for popular, modular-sized navigation and GPS units for those who foresee longer trips on unfamiliar bodies of water. “We may have splurged a bit with the optional 500-watt Polk Audio 5-Channel Subwoofer stereo,” Nordin says with a boyish grin. “The premium sound probably isn’t something

previous buyers of the brand expect, but younger buyers are driving improvements. We are seeing more wives and girlfriends actively involved in the decision making process, and as a result we are building in features that appeal to him, to her and together, as a couple.” A look to the future This economic reset may be one of the boating industry’s greatest catalysts for positive change. Especially for boat builders like Stingray, that concentrate on the entry-level models up to 25 feet. When you look at the 250LR, you are seeing the future of Stingray, with similar changes taking place across the company’s entire line of boats. Something that won’t change is the proven Z-Plane Hull. Without getting too technical, the design of the strakes act as horizontal planing faces when submerged, and when very near the water’s surface the outside edge of the Z-Plane acts as a spray release. This exclusive design passes through the water with no bubbles formed by the hull shape. Further translation, the 250LR hits a top speed in the mid 50s with just a 320 hp engine. “This is what attracted me to Stingray,” Nordin confesses. “I actually started talking with Al about joining him several years ago. We shared a passion for manufacturing, operations and accountability.” Where there’s clearly no compromise is the boat’s performance. The 250LR is an extremely responsive boat. Quiet and smooth, she turns on a dime. The high sides and hull design means the boat can handle choppy water with ease, an important feature on larger bodies of water. “I’m not sure everyone understands what the bottom does in terms of aerodynamics and fluid dynamics,” Nordin states. “This is what makes Stingray so unique. The Z-Plane Hull mitigates the air and water turbulence and delivers clean, smooth water to the propeller. It means we can attain fast speeds with a lighter engine, which translates into a very economical boat in terms of fuel economy.”

35 yeArs of boAtbuilding bliss Before the recession and shakeout of boatbuilders and dealers, Stingray ranked nine or 10 in terms of volume. Respectable to be among the top 10 boatbuilders. Today, they rank even higher — fifth or sixth in the country. That’s an awesome achievement, as Stingray celebrates its 35th anniversary in 2014. After learning how to build fiberglass boats from another builder, Fink and a handful of like-minded craftsmen set up shop about 2 hours south of Charlotte and began building no-nonsense runabouts. In the nearby hills peppered with NASCAR alumni of race teams’ good help, well vetted ideas abound. That core of workers has today grown to several hundred, and the plant occupies a collection of buildings totaling 250,000 square feet. Many employees have been there for years, fiercely loyal to Fink and the brand they’ve built. “Stingray knows its customers, and Al tries to perfect the product he’s focused on to please those customers,” notes Debbie Packer, Stingray creative manager and a 15-year plant veteran. “He’s been able to do that because he doesn’t try to be bigger and better than everyone else. Stingray builds boats to order instead of just mass producing them, so the dealers and customers are getting what they want, and it’s easy to react to changes in both the market and the economy. Where I see some people thinking a few months down the road, Al always is thinking well beyond that, and I think that’s why he’s been so successful over the last 35 years.” With 20 models under 25 feet, that market space on the Stingray waterfront is well covered. That’s why the flagship 250LR is an important model. With a resurging boat market, there’s temptation to build an even larger Stingray in the future. For the boater who’s adventurous and likes exploring multiple bodies of water, the 250LR meets all the criteria: Easy to trailer, family oriented and, perhaps the most important component, accountable affordability. The Invisible Danger

by Chris Dolan

Understanding the threat of electrical leakage at marinas and how to avoid it.

T

he most dangerous things in life are often the ones you cannot see. Electricity has existed for hundreds of years, and while the way it is handled generally has become much safer over that time, it’s still one of the most powerful forces in nature. Electricity around water — especially in marinas — can be extremely dangerous, simply because people cannot see it and consciously avoid its presence. Electric shock drowning (ESD) has been a threat since electricity was first introduced at marinas; however, prior to the first recorded ESD case in 1986, victims were typically classified as having died from straight-up drowning or other medical-related issues. ESD usually leaves no physical evidence of electricity being present. In most instances, the victim loses the ability to swim due to impaired muscle control. It truly represents an invisible danger.

What is ESD? ESD occurs when electrical current is introduced into the water through faulty wiring on a boat or in a marina, causing underwater metals to become energized (boat props, dock frames, ladders, etc.). Once metals become energized, an electrical field is created in the water. A swimmer or someone A typical marina power pedestal (top). Leaving power cords in the water can subject them to rusting connections; damaged cables should be repaired or removed immediately to reduce chances of an electrical shock incident (middle photos). Spliced electrical connections should be examined at least annually for water intrusions and signs of damage (bottom).

who unintentionally falls into the water enters the electrical field and can experience a variety of symptoms. The magnitude and intensity of the electrical field present is determined by how much current is being leaked into the water. ESD is much more common and dangerous in freshwater environments, like the Great Lakes. A swimmer is 70 times more likely to experience some negative effect in freshwater compared with saltwater. In saltwater, the salt surrounding the swimmer essentially allows the current to bypass him or her, as salt is a better conductor of electricity than the human body. In freshwater, however, the salt in the human body actually makes the swimmer a target for electrical current leakage. Depending on the amount of current in the water and the swimmer’s location relative to the leakage, a person may experience effects ranging from a slight tingle, to a complete loss of muscle control, to ventricular fibrillation. The effects people feel also can be affected by size, body mass, hydration levels, and even what the swimmer ate that day. If anyone swimming or falling into the water around your marina or boat experiences a tingling sensation or muscle control loss, turn off all power to the marina or boat immediately and call a certified electrician.

Lessening the chances of ESD Due to the dangers present with ESD, many states, municipalities and other code authorities are adopting or reviewing possible measures to lessen the risk of ESD. The easiest way to diminish the possibility of electrical shock is to prohibit

swimming within a marina or boatyard. It’s recommended that signs be posted throughout the facility prohibiting swimming due to the potential dangers of electrical leakage. Another good idea adopted by a handful of marine facilities is to provide designated in-water times for individuals working on vessels within the marina. These businesses simply set aside a posted window of time where people can work on boats in the water when the electricity is turned off. It’s important to post the times and dates of these working windows throughout the facility in order to alert customers that they will be without power at the slip for a predetermined amount of time. Contractors working at the facility also need to be aware that they will not have access to electricity for power tools and other electrical equipment. As a general rule, all electrical work at a marina facility or on board a particular vessel should be completed by licensed, certified electricians. This lessens the chance that a piece of equipment has

Another piece of protective equipment that can be incorporated into a marina or boatyard’s electrical system is a ground fault monitor. Ground fault monitors evaluate the level of electrical leakage being released from a certain power source. They come equipped with a variety of options and sophistications. The most economical

been improperly wired and will cause a potentially dangerous situation. Records of all maintenance for the marina and its vessels should be kept for liability purposes, in case an incident occurs. Marina work should comply with all National Electrical Code (NEC) and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards. Routine maintenance and inspections should be performed at marinas at least annually and is required under NFPA 5.20, Maintenance of Electrical Wiring and Equipment. Boaters should have all electrical work completed by an American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) certified electrician.

versions provide an alert through audible or visual alarm that a dangerous condition is present. More complex models offer variable warning levels, cell or text alerts, and even identify the exact boat slip causing the electrical problem. Monitors typically come in two forms: Single source or multiple source models. Single source models evaluate the main circuit breaker providing power for a group of slips. These units are more economical, but make it difficult to pinpoint the exact source(s) of leakage. Multiple source models are more expensive, but make problem source detection much easier.

GFCI and ground fault monitoring

First aid for electric shock victims

Many marina and boatyard facilities are now installing what’s known as ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) circuit breakers in their electrical systems. These circuit breakers are similar to what you would find in the restroom or kitchen of a residential home. GFCI breakers are designed to turn off power should a potentially dangerous situation occur. The breakers can be located in a variety of places throughout a marina facility and are now required to be installed somewhere within the electrical system for all new installations, per NEC mandate. Some states and municipalities have codes that go beyond NEC, so it’s important to understand the rules and regulations to ensure compliance. The best sources for this information are city electrical inspectors or certified electricians.

One of the biggest concerns with electric shock incidents is multiple injuries that result from people following the basic tenets of human nature. It’s difficult to watch someone fighting to stay above water and not instinctively jump in to try and save them. By jumping in the water to assist someone suffering the effects of electrical current, a rescuer then subjects him or herself to the same dangerous conditions as the victim. Many of the multiple death or injury incidents recorded since 1986 have occurred as a result of individuals valiantly trying to save someone struggling to survive. The first thing to do if an electrical leakage incident occurs is to shut off all power sources that may come in contact with the water. Persons struggling within the water should be addressed

Exposed live electrical connections are extremely dangerous, and power should be turned off immediately upon their discovery. using non-metal objects (wooden oars, ends of brooms, mops, etc.) so as not to subject rescuers to dangerous conditions. Emergency Medical Services also should be called immediately. Take extreme caution when removing victims from the water, as muscle control and feeling in the back and spine could be lost. If the victim has a pulse but is not breathing, performing CPR or use of an Artificial Electrical Defibrillator (AED) will be necessary. Electric leakage into water, especially freshwater, is extremely dangerous. Understanding the warning signs and ways to lessen the chances of having a catastrophic event are of the utmost importance. Every effort should be made to keep boaters out of the water at a marina or boatyard, but if anyone reports feeling a tingle while in the water, or if there are signs of excessive damage to metal items below the waterline, such as props, power should immediately be cut off and a certified electrician should be called to examine the system. summer days, and the urge grows even stronger. With this in mind, there’s no better time than the present to look at some fun ways to accessorize your pride and joy. No, not with air conditioning and refrigeration units, but with fun toys designed to expand your summer exploration possibilities — both on the water and shoreside. ‘Yak attack One way to extend your reach and increase your closeness to the water is by kayak. Kayaks are generally lightweight, easy to paddle for just about everyone, and can go into shallow areas that many other types of watercraft would never dare venture. All you need is your own paddle power. Oh, and if you like to fish, there’s hardly a better platform. The only downside to kayaks is the challenge of stowing them on board your vessel, since they’re large and bulky. A simple way to deal with the difficulty of stowing a full-size kayak is to roll it up. Yep, I said “roll it up.” Inflatable kayaks may not ultimately be as efficient and fast as rotomolded PVC (rigid) ones, but they’ve come a long way in the last 10 years. And stowage is a snap; simply deflate it, roll it up, shove it into its stowage bag, and then file it away in the closest locker. Hobie’s Mirage series inflatable kayaks (hobie.com) are not just easy to stow, they also come with the manufacturer’s patented MirageDrive system — it’s essentially two underwater, pedal-driven blades that propel the kayak forward. They typically start around $1,800. If that’s out of your budget range, there are tons of other inflatable kayak choices out there, and many start around $300. Rotomolded PVC kayaks are popular because of their general lightweight qualities and their ability to be paddled hard and put away wet, with little upkeep or maintenance required. If you’re just starting in kayaking, Perception (perceptionkayaks.com) manufactures a complete line of kayaks, but a good place to begin is with the sit-in, 10-foot Impulse model. It fits most folks’ budgets at around $400. West Marine (westmarine.com) also manufactures an extensive line of rotomolded rigid PVC kayaks that start at $349.

Get up, stand up Much like Bob Marley’s 1973 Reggae hit, a stand-up paddleboard (SUP) requires you to do just that — get up, stand up and paddle. Even if the paddling thing doesn’t sound like fun, being close to the water will cool you down in the summer sun. While storage of these long, rigid boards can be a challenge, that’s not stopping SUP-loving boaters from taking them everywhere they go on their boats, especially if they have an inflatable SUP. A SUP is basically a big surfboard. They’re usually wider, however, and have a large, non-skid standing area for the paddler. What makes them great is that you can paddle them virtually anywhere there’s more than 6 inches or so of water. When it comes to SUPs on boats, the inflatable ones are a great place to start — not only because they stow easily, but also because they are reasonably priced. The 8-foot Solstice Fiji SUP runs around $500, is wide and easy to paddle, and folds up to a compact 31-inch by 10-inch by 10-inch package when deflated. If you’re looking for a longer inflatable SUP, check out the Jimmy Styks (jimmystyks.com) and Bote (boteboard.com) inflatable SUPs, which come in long lengths up to 11 feet. Hard boards will ultimately perform better, but also will require creative stowage considerations on board. It’s worth taking this into account if you’re trying to decide between an inflatable SUP and a fiberglass one. If you do decide on a hard SUP, Jimmy Styks also makes great rigid models.

Your Summer by Gary Reich

Tuber-iffic and sled-tastic If your craft is a speed demon, one of the best ways to cool off the kids (or young-at-heart adults) is by towing them behind the boat in an inflatable tube, sled or banana. And it’s even better if you can manage to negotiate the float over a wave and spill its occupants into the water. Tubes look much like a round rubber donut and generally accommodate one to three people, depending on size. Look for tubes with good, sturdy handholds and durable construction — these things will see some abuse, after all. There are too many different tubes and manufacturers out there to list here, but expect to pay around $150 and up for a one- to four-person tube. Prices go higher based on design, build and materials quality, and brand, but most every reputable marine shop sells one type or another. Another fun way to enjoy a tug behind a fast powerboat is on what’s generally called a “banana tube” or sled. These long, cylindrical water toys resemble inflated hot dogs or, as the name implies, a banana. Riders generally sit upright (as does the tube) while holding on for dear life as they are ripped around atop the water. These water types are more expensive, but can carry up to 10 people. Expect to pay between $600 and $1,600 for a good-quality sled or banana tube, depending on capacity.

Pedal power Seasoned cruisers know that one of the best ways to extend one’s exploration capabilities is by carrying bikes aboard. Unfortunately, though, conventional bicycles aren’t just heavy, they’re also incredibly awkward to stow and haul ashore, too. So what if you could fold down your bike into a lightweight and compact package that’s easy to stow and small enough to haul ashore in a water taxi or your tender? Cruisers have been enjoying the benefits of carrying folding bikes aboard for decades, but it’s only been in the last 10 years that significant improvements have been made to these bikes’ comfort and pedaling qualities. Montague’s Crosstown, Paratrooper and SwissBike X50 models (montaguebikes.com) are great examples of foldable bikes that are comfortable and nice to pedal, starting at $649. Budget-minded boaters may like the Punch Sailor 3 (punchcycles.com), which starts at under $600. If you want to extend your exploration range even farther, consider an electric folding bike. Many fold up just like conventional pedal bikes, but have an electric motor and batteries. Electric-only range is about 20 miles with these bikes, which can be supplemented with pedal power, of course, and speeds of around 20 mph are typical. But also hold on to your wallets — these bikes cost between $700 and $1,700, depending on physical size, accessories and how big an electric motor they have. Ottawa and the Lock at Chateau Laurier

t’s hard to believe that a war is responsible for the wondrous waterway flowing through eastern Ontario called the Rideau Canal.

Today, the Rideau offers boaters a peaceful cruise through its storied history. It’s a voyage back in time, with stops at its lock stations and charming village ports along the way that will ultimately deposit you into the heart of Canada’s capital city, Ottawa. But the Rideau Canal was never intended as a tourist attraction and recreational boating destination. It came about as a result of the War of 1812. The canal was supposed to be used as an alternate supply route to Kingston and the Great Lakes during wartime, as the international boundary along the St. Lawrence River was vulnerable to attack. The canal’s “back door” water route was built for troops and supplies from Montreal to reach Upper Canada settlements and a naval dockyard at Kingston. Considered one of the greatest engineering feats of the 19th century, the Rideau Canal stretches 125 miles from Ottawa to Kingston.

Establishing the Route

The British sent Lieutenant Colonel John By of the Royal Engineers to supervise canal construction built by thousands of laborers, including Irish immigrants, French Canadians and Scottish stonemasons. They built 47 locks, blockhouses and dams. It’s truly remarkable how these structures have stood the test of time. The canal was built in virtual wilderness 35 years before the Confederation of Canada on July 1, 1867. Today, boaters can cruise into the nation’s capital,

just one mile from the Prime Minister’s famous residence on 24 Sussex Drive, and watch fireworks in the shadow of the Peace Tower and Parliament on Canada Day. Ken Watson, author of numerous books on the Rideau Canal including “Tales of the Rideau” and “A History of the Rideau Lockstations” (rideauinfo.com), has spent two decades researching the waterway and is fascinated by its rich heritage. “A boater going through the Rideau Canal is living history,” says Watson, who resides on the Rideau’s Sand Lake. “Ottawa is there because of the Rideau Canal.” While Big Rideau Lake is up to 330 feet deep, the Rideau Canal route has a few travel restrictions. For instance, it’s recommended that your boat not be more than 90 feet LOA or draw more than 4 feet of water if you want to take the cruise through the canal. Parks Canada oversees lock stations, locks and fees. It’s estimated that about 8,000 boaters cruise the Rideau Canal each year, says Watson. It also has become a popular route with paddlers. Ahoy Rentals (ahoyrentals.com), located on the waterfront in Kingston, has kayaks and canoes that are ideal for paddling this route. You can launch right from the dock at their storefront

or take your rental off site. They also offer flexible pick-up and drop-off service to most lock stations from Kingston to Ottawa. UNESCO (United Nations, Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) has declared the Rideau Canal a World Heritage Site. Tourism is its mainstay today, ranking second in National Geographic’s selection of world class destinations in 2008. The canal attracts many boaters from Ontario and Québec and all across North America. “It’s very different boating to be sure,” says Lorraine Ramsay, as she and her husband, Don, waited for the locks to open at the village of Merrickville for their 30-foot cruiser. But the Ramsays prefer this pace. “It’s very European.” If time constraints won’t allow getting your boat up to Ontario, or you would prefer to sit back and relax, Ontario Waterway Cruises (cruiseontario.ca) gives passengers the opportunity to experience the Rideau Canal on a five-day cruise from Kingston to Ottawa. This family-owned and -operated cruise company offers a unique cruising experience with a casual family atmosphere, quality service, great food, breathtaking scenery, and visits to local ports along the way. They also offer a Trent-Severn cruise, as well as one from Peterborough to Kingston, including the Thousand Islands.

The Journey Begins

The Rideau Canal is accessed through Lake Ontario at Kingston. The voyage from the Great Lakes will take you canal cruising on a different type of journey, with stops at historic ports like Jones Falls. The first community that you reach on the Rideau Canal cruise from Kingston to Ottawa is Seeley’s Bay, a quaint village that caters to visiting boaters. The village of Newboro has a new, revitalized marina this summer and is home to Stirling Lodge and Kilborn’s, a country store with thousands of square feet of shopping that’s popular with locals and

visiting boaters alike. Westport is a welcoming mill town, a highlight in the Rideau Lakes district in the shadow of Foley Mountain. The village provides boaters with amenities and popular attractions such as Foley Mountains’ Spy Rock observation deck, the Rideau District Museum and an annual Outdoor Music Festival. The port of Portland has deep water surrounding islands and bays that make it ideal for cruising. Dock and camp overnight at Colonel By Island, named after the “Father of the Rideau.” Portland’s harbor boasts amenities including shopping, restaurants and a sandy beach for swimming. You don’t have to be a military buff to enjoy exploring the Rideau. There’s some pretty interesting history to absorb besides that of the canal, its locks and military blockhouses. The port of Perth offers up a story straight out of a Wild West movie script. Dock overnight here at the scene of the last fatal duel in Upper Canada, reminiscent of the fatal shootouts of Western folklore. Take a tour up the Tay Canal from Beveridges Locks, off Lower Rideau Lake, and you’ll find public docks available at Last Duel Park and Campgrounds, where the Tay Canal enters the southeast corner of town. The Perth Museum (Matheson House) showcases the pistols used in Canada’s last fatal duel in 1833. The incident occurred June 13, when law student John Wilson shot and killed Robert Lyon while defending his honor. Lyon had called Wilson a liar and assaulted him. Lyon, who originally hailed from Scotland, also was a law student. The pair were dueling over the love of local schoolteacher Elizabeth Hughes. Wilson and his “second,” Samuel Robertson, were both charged with murder and later acquitted. The duel didn’t hurt Wilson’s love life or law career, however. Two years later, he married Hughes and they eventually had three children together. He later went on to become a judge and member of Parliament before dying in 1869.

Steamboats once lined up at Perth to ferry passengers and other goods to ports along the Rideau. Today, Perth — voted “Prettiest Town in Ontario” by TV Ontario 2000 — offers pristine parks and a summer-long Farmer’s Market at the Crystal Palace. Town streets are lined with heritage homes and stores as it prepares to celebrate its 200th anniversary in 2016. There are some great restaurants housed in heritage buildings here, too, such as the Stone Cellar and Fiddleheads Bar & Grill. Mex & Co., with its waterfront patio, offers ambiance and tasty Mexican food. Perth also lays claim to the “Big Cheese.” In the 1800s, 12 local cheese makers shipped a 22,000-pound, 6-foot-high, 28-foot-wide cheese wheel to the Chicago World’s Fair, and it broke a world record. If you’re curious about what it might have looked like, you can check out a “Big Cheese” replica at the Tay Canal basin.

The Rideau’s “Crown Jewel”

The village of Merrickville bills itself as “The Jewel of the Rideau” for good reason. Merrickville was settled in the 1700s as an industrial center along the shores of the Rideau, with foundries, woolen mills, saw mills and grist mills. It would later become a strategic military center during the building of the canal. Today, it’s a bustling tourism town, with more than 50 shops and restaurants lining its streets. It’s one of the last stops en route to Ottawa through the canal lock system. Merrickville has become a popular shopping destination and is a favorite port for boaters. Steeve Lassard and Nathalie Rawmaond, of Gatineau, Québec, love stopping here aboard their 32-foot cruiser, Passion. Cruising the canal is a way to get away from it all, says Lassard. “Just being on the water is so relaxing,” he says. “Ten minutes after leaving shore, all your problems slip away.” Merrickville is a heritage village that has developed into a

trendy day-tripping getaway for people in Ottawa and other nearby communities. But the village also is cherished for its Rideau Canal history. The Merrickville Blockhouse, now a museum, was built in 1832 as a fort to defend the canal. Visitors can find a shop along the canal called The Depot, operated by the Friends of the Rideau, that sells gifts, books, charts and waterway-related gifts. Enjoy strolling Merrickville’s eclectic boutiques and shops offering jewelry, fashions, garden and home décor, and antiques. There are about 30 artisans in the village. Mrs. McGarrigles is a foodies’ delight not to be missed, featuring fine cookware, chocolate and its award-winning gourmet mustards in one of the village’s original general stores. Check out the handmade leather bags at Rowland Leather and the whimsical home and garden store Windsor’s Courtyard. Paws a Bit offers some chic canine couture and grooming for boaters of the furry, four-legged variety. There are some terrific spots to eat in Merrickville. The stately stone building called the Baldachin Inn offers lunch and fine dining, British-style pub and courtyard patio. There’s Gad’s Hill Place or Dickens’ Eating House, for casual dining in a Victorian setting with pub fare. The Yellow Canoe Café has a charming courtyard, serving soups, salads and sandwiches. The last leg of the Rideau voyage takes you past the village of Manotick, and the lock at Long Island allows boaters to enter Canada’s capital city.

Exploring Ottawa

Ottawa was wilderness when the Rideau Canal was built. Today, the canal will take you to its cosmopolitan center, with fine shopping and dining just steps away in the Byward Market and the Rideau Centre mall. The market offers fresh produce, flowers, artisan crafts and jewelry. Take a tour of Parliament Hill, drink in a 360-degree view

of the city from Peace Tower, watch the changing of the Guard Ceremony, and visit the National Arts Centre, Canadian War Museum and Museum of Nature. Take a stroll through the palatial Château Laurier hotel and enjoy cocktails at its lounge. For fine dining and cutting-edge French cuisine, try 18 on 18 York Street in a century-old heritage building. Social restaurant and lounge on Sussex Drive offers French and Mediterranean fusion cuisine, while Haveli’s Indian Restaurant on Clarence Street boasts the city’s best Indian food. Black Thorn is a popular pub and bistro on Clarence Street. There’s no shortage of fine dining in downtown Ottawa, but the Rockcliffe Boathouse Marina, a floating restaurant on the Ottawa River a couple of miles northeast of the Ottawa Locks, offers dining and overnight mooring. Ottawa comes alive at night, and there are plenty of summer festivals in which to partake. There’s Ribfest, the Ottawa International Jazz Festival , Canada Day celebrations and fireworks July 1 on Parliament Hill, Ottawa’s Bluesfest, and Busker Festival. Enjoy the atmosphere while you can in the summer. Because come winter, Ottawa’s canal is transformed into the world’s largest skating rink. But with spring, the ice thaws, the tulips return, and the canal once again belongs to boaters. A voyage through the Rideau is more than a boat ride. Its tranquil time travel takes you deep into Canada’s rich history and right up to the doorstep of downtown Ottawa. It’s a cruise like no other. LB Jones Falls lock

above the waterline | by Dave Wallace

Dealing With Depth The ups and downs of depth sounders.

M

y first Great Lakes cruising boat was a fixed keel sailboat. That keel extended almost 6 feet below the waterline — a lot deeper than my shallow draft riverboats. The very idea that half of my boat was under water at all times made me paranoid enough to invest in a depth sounder, even before I added a marine radio. I was less afraid of running aground gently then suddenly discovering a rock or reef while cruising along at 6 knots. That speed is hardly worth noting on the expressway, but in a big cruising boat this could mean kitchenware and electronics flying, bodies hurtling and substantial hull damage. I know this for a fact, because one of my best friends hit a reef under full sail from the North Channel, and all of the above occurred — in a matter of seconds. In retrospect, I believe this was the excuse his limping mate needed to permanently resign as crewmember. I’ll grant you that cruisers generally have more leeway than deep keel sailboats, but eventually it could come to all of us — and in a powerboat, the jets or props will be the first to go. With this in mind, I chose a depth sounder as the very first accessory for my very first Great Lakes cruising boat. I had already become involved with the challenge of assembling my own electronics, courtesy of the Heath Company in Benton Harbor, Michigan. I assembled my own stereo amplifier and voltage converter, so a depth sounder installation promised to be even easier. This was true of the kit part, but not of the actual installation, which, to my horror, would require drilling a 2-inch diameter hole in the bottom of my hull for the sending unit. In spite of the pride and satisfaction this project provided, I quickly discovered the drawback of traditional depth sounders: They accurately project the depth under the hull, but provide no early warning of what lies ahead. I understand that there are such things as forward-looking sounders, but during my cruising days I never met anyone who actually owned one. It was straight down or nothing! The Lake Michigan shoreline is quite predictable, because Michigan inherited most of the sand blown over from the lake’s western Wisconsin side during its formation many moons ago. This not only makes for great beaches, but also for gently developing shallows. The Wisconsin side of Lake Michigan, along with areas to the far north, are the complete opposite. All that sand once donated to Michigan left these regions with large, bare boulders and jagged reefs. The depth sounder

Depth sounders are must-have accessories on Great Lakes cruising boats!

warning and the sudden, crashing halt usually came pretty much simultaneously. We knew of this reality from our charts, but had yet to experience it in person. Our first trip over to Wisconsin was made under cover of low hanging rain clouds and fog, so there was no chance of getting an advance view of the destination’s shoreline. This was my first experience navigating by compass and depth sounder, and my ETA was interrupted ahead of my anticipated time by a sudden and relentless loss of depth. As I stared at my instrument, I watched it go from the hundreds, to the teens, to single digits in uncomfortably rapid succession. I dropped the sails in anticipation of a premature arrival, when suddenly the sounder began to show deeper numbers again. After an uneventful arrival at our Green Bay marina, I learned from the locals that this section of the Wisconsin coast has an area of relative shallows offshore; sort-of an advance welcoming committee that’s helpful if you already know that it exists, but scary as hell when it shows up unexpectedly on a straight, downward-shooting, self-assembled depth sounder that you sort-of trust, but not entirely.
