Looking for High Quality Marine Fuel?

These Great Lakes Certified ValvTect Marinas Have Your Fuel Needs Covered. 7

ValvTect7 Marine Fuels are Specially Formulated for Your Marine Engine: Your marine engine needs a marine grade fuel to prevent problems caused by ultra-low sulfur diesel, biodiesel and “automotive grade” gasoline. Bacteria, rust, water, excessive fuel deposits and stale fuels can increase maintenance costs and shut your engine down. ValvTect7 brand marine grade fuels help to prevent these problems and save money by requiring no additional fuel additives to perform their best. Cape Vincent in Upstate New York is described as the town “Where Lake and River Meet.” Its rugged shores hug both Lake Ontario and the mighty St. Lawrence River along a panoramic peninsula that is the western gateway to the world-famous Thousand Islands. by Kim Lunman ..................................................................................................................

ON THE COVER Sporting an airy, open salon and flexible, 3-stateroom layout, the Riviera 52 Enclosed Flybridge is a noteworthy addition to the classic flybridge collection. She retains the distinct indoor/outdoor characteristics for which Riviera is known, but the 52 is more than just a mere model refinement — she boasts clever and convenient alfresco lifestyle concepts and ultramodern technology.

New Ventures

AUGUST 2015 | VOLUME LXIX, NO. 8

Kate Bush takes the helm of Lakeland Boating as our new editor.

L

ast spring, I introduced Kate Bush as our new associate editor. This summer, I take pleasure in announcing Kate’s promotion to editor of Lakeland Boating, effective with the September issue. Kate comes to us as a lifelong boater with extensive cruising time, primarily in Northern Michigan. She is a graduate of Michigan State University, with a bachelor’s degree from the School of Journalism. She knows the Great Lakes, boating and excels at social media and feature writing. Kate has been working hand-in-hand with Lindsey Johnson, Lakeland’s editor. During the past year, she has taken Kate under her wing, giving her a leg up as she takes on the editorship of Lakeland Boating. We are grateful for Lindseys contributions in taking our magazine to the next level. I wish Kate and Lindsey the very best in their respective new ventures. This issue is full of Eastern Great Lakes narratives by Lakeland contributor Kim Lunman, the talented owner and publisher of Island Life magazine. As a Thousand Islands local, Lunman divulges the ins and outs of the Cape Vincent, New York region in our Port of Call (p. 36). Cape Vincent is the only town in the nation where the St. Lawrence River meets Lake Ontario. Rich in its French heritage, Cape Vincent is a delightful summer getaway to experience unparalleled boating (and even try an authentic French baguette). While you are in the area, keep your eye out for the fascinating and charming boathouses that dot the Thousand Islands shoreline. Learn the story behind many of these historic boathouses in our feature story, also written by Lunman (p. 32). Lakeland contributor Capt. Tom Serio had the pleasure of testing the new Riviera 52 Enclosed Flybridge for this issue (p. 24). With the trademark airy indoor/outdoor floor plan and a flexible 3-stateroom layout, the 52 is a noteworthy addition to the Riviera model lineup. Also, contributor Alan Wendt tested the Pursuit OS 325 (p. 28), and boy, is this an angler’s dream boat! If you love boats (which I’m hoping you do), check out Lakeland Boating’s calendar of events (p. 6), including the 51st Annual Antique Boat Show and Auction in Clayton, New York (July 31-August 2), the Michigan City Boat Show (August 6-9) and the Cedar Point Boat Show (August 27-30). With summer in full swing, take some time to relax on the water. Have fun and be safe! See you on the water,

GREAT LAKES NEWS

Straights of Mackinac Pipeline Cause for Concern

The Line 5 pipeline that runs directly underneath the Straights of Mackinac is aging, and many environmentalists and scientists are concerned that a catastrophic oil spill is imminent. The pipeline, run by Canada-based Enbridge Energy, is 62 years old and moves an estimated 23 million gallons of oil and natural gas through the Straits each day. Back in 2010, another Enbridge pipeline leaked 800,000 gallons of oil into the Kalamazoo River, creating the largest inland oil spill in the nation’s history. Many fear that this also could happen to the Line 5 pipeline. Environmentalists are pushing to have the pipeline shut down and are asking state officials to step in and assist.

Denny Heck 1949 – 2015 Michigan waterways lost one of its biggest fans and greatest supporters, Denny Heck, of Charlevoix, Michigan, this past June. Heck developed his passion for boating at an early age, when he began working for DeWitt Marine on Torch Lake during the summer. He later became owner of the 200-slip DeWitt Marine in 1972. After Heck left DeWitt in 1978, he had the opportunity to develop a full-service powerboat marina on Charlevoix’s Round Lake. The business offered a wide range of boats, including Chris-Craft, Sea Ray, MerCruiser and Mercury outboards and a variety of trawlers. In 1981, Heck developed Northwest Marine Yacht Club on Lake Charlevoix. Most recently, he was an associate broker with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services in Charlevoix. Heck recorded the first “dockominium” in the state of

Volvo Group Hits Energy Efficient Goal Early

Manufacturer of marine engines, Volvo Group North America, recently announced that it achieved its goal of reducing energy consumption for the U.S. Department of Energy “Better Buildings, Better Plants Challenge” 5 years earlier than anticipated. Volvo Group’s goal had been a 25 percent reduction in energy consumption at its eight U.S. manufacturing plants between 2009 and 2020. By the end of 2014, Volvo Group, one of only 11 companies to meet its goal early, had reduced energy consumption by 26.8 percent. Since the launch of the Better Buildings Challenge in 2011, more than 250 partners have saved $840 million and 94 TBTUs of energy, which represents 6 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions. It’s the perfect place for moms and daughters who want to get out and look at the shops and stay overnight.” Explore the stores at Top of the Hill Shops, The Settlement Shops and Founder’s Square, which offer up everything from clothing boutiques and jewelry to local art. Save your appetite for the local eateries: Cookery Restaurant and Wine Bar, offering “creative American fare” with water views; Pelletier’s Restaurant and Fish Boil, giving tourists a taste of the classic Door County fish boil; and Wild Tomato Wood-Fired Pizza, for some family-friendly, locally-sourced fare. For nature buffs, the renowned, 3,776-acre Peninsula State Park offers camping, biking, boating, 18-hole golf course, and tours of the 1860s Eagle Bluff Lighthouse. Tour the park by water to experience the beautiful bluffs, sandy shorelines and autumn colors.

LAKELANDBOATING.COM

Moving northward, the quaint village of Ephraim boasts some of the most beautiful Door County shorelines. Ephraim is home to three of the most popular boat tie-up locations: Nicolet Bay, Horseshoe Island and Eagle Harbor. “It’s kind of like a little triangle, and they are all perfect spots for anchoring and swimming,” Matson says. “They are all sandy, shallow Fyr Bal and the water tends to be warmer and super clear.” Nicolet Bay is the “hangout spot,” according to Matson, where, on a hot summer day, you’ll be among more than 50 to 100 other boaters. Settled on Peninsula State Park, Nicolet Bay Beach is where boaters can rent kayaks or bicycles for the day, take a private sailing class, or even stop by the Northern Sky Theatre to catch a musical under a canopy of Door County stars. Two miles offshore lies Horseshoe Island — a historic haven that’s known as the ideal exploration playground. Overnight offshore anchoring is allowed outside this island, and visitors can hop on land to explore the mile-long Engelmar Trail, which meanders the circumference of the 38-acre island. In the heart of the village of Ephraim is Eagle Harbor, known for its accessible beaches and the iconic Door County landmark, the Hardy Gallery, housed in a graffiti-covered warehouse on Anderson Dock. The village’s main festival is Fyr Bal — a Scandinavian shoreline bonfire to celebrate the beginning of summer. “This area is for the parents who want to use their boat as a jumping-off point and a swimming platform,” Matson says. “The town of Ephraim is right there, and there are transient slips available. Wilson’s Ice Cream is probably one of the best places in Door County. It’s a fun little village.”

School House Beach

The stunning shoreline of Sister Bay showcases a bustling downtown that offers vibrant local shopping and awardwinning restaurants, including the famous Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant, known for cooking up delicious Swedish pancakes and, of course, the goats adorning its roof. “Sister Bay is where Beacon Marine is located, so I’m totally biased,” jokes Matson. “The shopping district is about 50 to 100 yards from the marina, and there are all sorts of shops and restaurants.” Tie your boat up at the Sister Bay Marina, named the “Best Marina in Door County” by Door County Magazine, which offers 40 transient slips. Just a quick walk from the marina is the town’s Waterfront Park Performance Pavilion, which hosts free concerts in the summer, as well as Matson’s Beacon Marine, a locally owned and operated dealer of Back Cove Yachts, Cobalt, Scout, Sabre and Sealine Yachts. “When you think about day boating, our yacht lines are really spot-on for Door County,” Matson says. “Northern Door County is a launch pad for exploring all of the Great Lakes, and our company DNA is perfectly suited to getting people into the best boats for Door County.” Don’t miss Sister Bay’s annual Marina Fest September 5-6, featuring live music, cardboard boat races, local food booths and a classic wooden boat show. Other fun festivals are the Door County Festival of Fine Arts August 8 and the Fall Festival October 16-18, also known as the granddaddy of all Door County festivals. Fred & Fuzzy’s, Sister Bay

Washington Island A lesser-known but equally beautiful northern Door County destination for day boating is Washington Island and its School House Beach. Known for its crystal-clear waters and tumble beach rock, this geological marvel is the ultimate place for anchoring. The largest of the 34 islands in Door County, Washington Island has 35 square miles of rocky shores and lush forests and more than 100 miles of roads to explore. There are a few marinas on the island, including Kap’s Marina on the south end of the island, which offers several transient slips. Or swim ashore to explore the family-owned shops, eateries, Maritime Museum and the Lyons Isle Vineyards. Don’t miss the island’s annual Lions Club Fly-In Fish Boil at the Washington Island Airport July 18, the Music Festival August 3-14, and the Island Fair August 15. “School House Beach is where you’d go to unwind,” Matson says. “Washington Island is 3 miles off the tip of Door County; not everyone wants to make the trip out there, so it’s going to be tranquil. It’s a great, great location.” ★

DON’T HESITATE TO RENOVATE by Capt. Frank Lanier

Absorb the Impact Learn when and how to cushion your topsides with proper fenders. ender use and selection may seem like a no-brainer, yet so many boat owners haven’t a clue with regard to their selection or use. Here’s a look at how to choose and get the most out of those unsung protectors of both gelcoat and boat-handling pride.

What they do and how they do it A fender simply is an inflatable or padded cushion placed between your boat and some other object (dock, piling, other boat, etc.) to protect your topsides and the other object from the potential bangs, dings and scratches that can occur while docking, rafting or mooring. Most fenders, particularly inflatables, are constructed of soft vinyl; although a number of other materials are used as well, from foam to the rove hemp line fenders found aboard some traditional craft. Modern fenders come in a wide variety of styles and shapes designed for specific uses, such as that corner dock wheel that helps you maneuver into your slip when crosswinds or currents are present. Cylindrical fenders (the most common type) have either a molded-in fairlead through their center or eyes at each end, allowing you to deploy them vertically or horizontally. Lines can be attached to the eyes using a bowline, while those using center ropes can be secured using a figure eight stopper knot. Round or spherical fenders are a popular choice for larger powerboats, as their increased diameter helps keep flared, V-shaped bows away from docks and other structures. Flat fenders are non-inflatable foam pads or cushions. They’re typically found aboard smaller boats, but also can come in handy aboard larger vessels for those odd cushioning jobs that may crop up. Transom fenders, which (as you might expect) can be mounted on a transom or swim platform, provide protection from unruly dinghies or while docking stern-in at a marina. Rafting fenders and cushions are specifically designed for use when rafting boats together. Cushions are large and flat, so they don’t roll or ride up. Docking next to a piling can be a problem for traditional fenders. V-shaped fenders have a self-centering shape designed to keep them properly positioned against a piling, regardless of boat movement. Longer cylindrical fenders can be hung horizontally, providing a larger protective surface area, while another possible solution is to create a A rafting fender is used when — you guessed it — rafting boats together (top). A loose roving fender easily is placed where needed (middle). An Easytow Fender quickly can be inflated and deflated for easy storage (bottom).

fender board (see sidebar). When coming up alongside a flat structure, such as a seawall, a vertical position on a cylindrical fender often works best.

Sizing up fenders When buying fenders, less is more and bigger is better. In other words, four properly sized fenders — the minimum amount a mid-sized vessel should carry — are better than 10 undersized ones. Fender manufacturers often provide a selection guide, but a commonly quoted “rule” recommends 1 inch of fender diameter per every 5 feet of boat length (2 inches for round fenders). That may seem like a lot, but I’ve never heard anyone complain about having oversized fenders while trying to keep their boat off of a gnarly concrete dock during an unexpected surge or seiche. If storage is an issue, look into inflatable fenders such as those offered by Easystow Fenders (EASYSTOWFENDERS.COM) or AERÉ (AEREDOCKINGSOLUTIONS.COM). Both companies offer

How to make a fender board 1. Select a solid piece of lumber that is 3 to 4 feet long. Plastic lumber or even a large diameter piece of PVC pipe also will work.

2. Drill holes at the top of each end; for PVC pipe, glue caps on the end and drill holes all the way through the caps, top to bottom. 3. Secure a 4-foot piece of line to each hole. 4. Hang the board on the outside of two or more cylindrical fenders. Make sure the fender board lines are secured to cleats or other strong points and not lifelines.

large fenders that quickly can be inflated with a standard dinghy pump and deflated for easy storage.

Tie one on Fender lines should be between 5/16 and 3/8 inches in diameter — a size that’s both easy to handle and strong enough to get the job done. Any marine-grade line will work, but avoid polypropylene, which can be too slippery and prone to UV damage. Keep fenders and extra line out of the water to prevent the growth of algae and other underwater pests. Deploy fenders from the boat and never from the dock; it makes them easier to adjust from the boat and allows them to follow and protect the hull in the event of a storm. Secure fenders to railings or lifelines only if a lower spot, such as a cleat, is unavailable. To hang a center line cylindrical fender horizontally, tie a half hitch or figure eight on both sides to keep it in position. If possible, avoid pre-positioning and tying fenders off while approaching a dock, as they can get snagged on

When rafting two boats together (above), consider using a rafting fender or cushion to help protect the topsides of each boat. AERÉ Fenders offer large inflatable fenders that conveniently deflate with a standard dinghy pump (left).

pilings or docks and may even result in a loss of steering as the boat gets jerked askew. A better option is having one or two crewmembers man loose “roving fenders,” which quickly can be placed where needed and cushion contact points. While there are all sorts of hangers, straps and other such doo-dads on the market to hang fenders, the simplest way to secure fender lines to a lifeline or rail is a slippery hitch — a clove hitch finished with a slipped loop. It’s reliable, simple to tie, easily can be released, and costs nothing but the time to learn it. ★

Crowdsourced Charting

Insight Genesis by Navico

Navionics, a leading electronic charting company, says it best in one of its marketing slogans: “Want better charts? Go boating!” Thanks to crowdsourced data and software made available by a few key manufacturers, including Navionics’ SonarCharts (NAVIONICS.COM), your outings can now act as data-rich surveys, aiding in the accurate and detailed mapping of lakes and coastal areas. By simply recording your sounder readings to a memory card in your chartplotter and then uploading the data online, you can translate the readings into updated bathymetric charts. As more users input their data into the system, the more accurate and detailed the charts become; and that’s beneficial for everyone involved. Navico also has turned to crowdsourcing to improve navigation charts. Its cloud-based Insight Genesis software automatically processes your sonar data into custom maps and allows you to download other users’ maps. Humminbird’s AutoChart has likewise followed suit. Each manufacturer has its own twist on the crowdsourcing theme, but they all end up with similar results: A chart that has more detailed bathymetric information. These charts fill holes found in traditional electronic and paper charts, which may rely on outdated or incomplete survey information.

uploaded to Navionics also Humminbird’s can include local knowledge, such as AutoChart known obstacles in the water. Navico’s Insight Genesis (INSIGHTGENESIS.COM) social mapping will work on the majority of recent Lowrance, Simrad and B&G chartplotters and multi-function displays. Compatible machines store depth data on a micro SD card and then upload the data to a cloud-based database. The information is then processed and an updated chart is created. These new charts are then downloadable from anywhere there is internet capability. A premium version of Insight Genesis exists, which allows for private data uploads and can include bottom hardness and vegetation information, among many other features. Humminbird, not to be outdone, has its own software called AutoChart (HUMMINBIRD.COM). Using one of the Zero Lines map cards and the AutoChart DVD software, a user can record and upload his or her data from a day on the water and instantly create an updated chart of the lake. By remaining anonymous, you can keep all of your data to yourself (particularly handy in a fishing tournament). The new AutoChart Pro offers all the same features of AutoChart with the added capability of bottom hardness indication, as well as an impressive side imaging mosaic. No matter whose crowdsourced chart you end up with, it certainly can help fill the voids on your own charts — and make your day navigating the water that much better. ★

Navionics’ SonarCharts take information from various manufacturers’ chartplotters and mobile devices to create a high-definition chart layer that can then be displayed on select B&G, Garmin, Humminbird, Lowrance, Raymarine and Simrad multi-function displays. Navionics also offers SonarCharts Live, which provide a real-time display of sonar recordings on mobile devices using the Navionics Boating App. Users can view newly created and private HD charts — which also are saved on the device — while the recorded depth data is shared anonymously to help improve SonarCharts for other users. hile it’s true that the digitized charts on today’s chartplotters can simplify the task of navigating, it’s possible that details may be lacking in places. There may even be portions of these electronic charts that have left us guessing or reaching for (gasp!) a paper chart — only to find that it had no more information than what’s on our screen. ASK THE EXPERT by Elizabeth Altick

All-Inclusive Service Elite Yachts’ Barbara Walsh explains the advantages of all-in-one brokerage services. LB: What is the main advantage of combining a yacht brokerage with a service facility and marina?

LB: How does a buyer know if what he or she sees in a yacht is what they get?

Walsh: Having a full-service marina at your fingertips is a great way to take care of any problems that surveyors may find with a yacht so that the customer can fix them before completing the sale. This includes mechanical repairs, fiberglass work and waxing. For the purpose of a survey, we offer slips at a discounted rate and a lift and launch on the premises.

Walsh: Buyers need more than a visual inspection. They also can rely on records from the marina where it has been kept. Some owners maintain their boat themselves and hopefully have kept records. Unfortunately, there is no crystal ball or guarantees (although they now sell used boat guarantees, but they are not inexpensive). In any case, it’s a large investment — and that’s why it’s important to keep boats maintained.

LB: Are there other benefits?

CONTACT Marine Services Corporation 14001 Cottage Grove Ave. Dolton, IL 60419 708-841-5660 ELITEYACHTSCHICAGO.COM

Walsh: Knowledge; it’s great to have a full crew of employees who are willing and able to help new boaters who have no knowledge of what it takes to keep a boat running smoothly. Everyone in the yard helps make the boaters’ new experience a great one. For instance, if a new boater is frightened of docking, we offer a free lesson and then introduce them to one of our experienced captains if they need additional help. The marina also may suggest installing a bow thruster if we feel it would be advantageous. We have the ability to do this immediately, so everyone can go home excited to start their new experience. LB: What should a seller look for in a broker?

LB: Is off-season storage available?

Walsh: Absolutely! We have 10 buildings: Eight are heated, and we are proud to say we have been at full capacity every year for the last 10 years, with a waiting list. We have fantastic employees who care as much as we do. Our staff is the core of the company, and Marine Services and Elite Yachts plan on being around for a long time. The way to do that is with honest, reliable work and, of course, customer service!

LB: How does one know if the asking price is fair?

Walsh: Trust your broker. Each boat is different in its own way: One may have additional or new equipment; one may be much cleaner that others; another boat may feature a new interior or new canvas. There are numerous variations, and an experienced broker has the skill of determining the boat’s worth.

LAKELANDBOATING.COM

LB: What are the most important services a marina can offer?

Walsh: Service! That includes sales, paint shop, storage, fiberglass repairs and top technicians for gas and diesel. Keeping up with the industry for used boats as well as new also is important, as is the installation of new electronics, bow thrusters and underwater lights. Above all, you’re looking for an honest, trustworthy company that cares about you and your boat. ★

I

n case you haven’t been paying attention, pontoon boats are taking over the world. Where other segments of the boating market have withered since the Great Recession, pontoon boats are one of the fastest-growing pieces of the American boating pie. And there’s a good reason for that: Today’s pontoons are fast, comfortable and — with all sorts of performance pontoon tube packages — handle just as well as traditional fiberglass boats, sometimes even better. One pontoon that delivers on those performance and comfort promises is the Crest Caribbean 250 SLR2. “The Caribbean has many standard features that set it apart, including unique styling, a fence design that melds with our fiberglass seat bases, and superior build quality when compared to most other manufacturers,” says Timothy Wert of Skipper Bud’s Lake Fenton. “Standard teak and holly polyvinyl flooring and multiple textures of upholstery are available, plus a highly customizable layout make this boat one of our most luxurious.” That layout includes two forward lounges, two aft- facing

laKElaNDboatiNg.CoM

chaise lounges, a starboard helm station with an ubercomfortable captain’s chair, and an additional single seat adjacent to it, to port. There is ample stowage under the seating, and Crest’s hinging mechanism rotates the seat bottom out of the way for better access. One thing that sets Crest apart, but seldom gets mentioned in boat reviews, is its use of fiberglass seat bases and modules, which are far more sturdy and longer-lasting than the rotomolded polyethylene bases that many other manufacturers incorporate. Another feature to note is the way Crest stands behind its product — the Caribbean 250 SLR2 comes with a transferable lifetime deck warranty. Standard power on the 250 SLR2 is a single, 150-horsepower Mercury FourStroke outboard. If you opt for Crest’s CP3 Performance Plus triple pontoon package and a Mercury Verado 300-horsepower outboard, you’ll enjoy top-end speeds in the low- to mid-50 mph range. Oh, and those triple tubes will give you cornering and turning performance that’s astounding, thanks to the larger-diameter center tube. H

Hobie Mirage Tandem Island ®

Say hello to the Swiss Army Knife of boats.

S

ay you want to go sailing, paddling and pedaling all in one afternoon. You’d need three different boats, right? That’s unless you happen to own a Hobie Tandem Island — a unique offering from a company that made its name building excellent catamaran sailing craft, kayaks and surfboards. The Tandem Island, at 18.5 feet in length, just happens to do all three of those fun, aforementioned water activities in one convenient package. Deploy the roller furling sail and you’re powering away with the breeze in a triple-hulled sailing craft. When the wind dies down, simply furl the sail up, put your legs into action, and you can kick around the lake all afternoon using your leg power. If keeping it simple is your thing, easily remove the outboard hulls (amas) and roller furling carbon mast, and you’re left with a kayak hull that’s very capable on its own for paddling around or fishing. You even can fit the Tandem Island with an optional livewell; I can taste the walleye now. Fully rigged, the Tandem Island looks like a compact, low profile sailing trimaran. It has an 18-foot, carbon-composite

roller furling mast that easily can be deployed from the front seat of the center kayak hull, as well as a droppable centerboard with a responsive kick-up rudder. Steering controls are cleverly fitted at both seating positions in the center kayak hull. Optional trampolines can be fitted between the amas to increase the Tandem Island’s seating or storage versatility. When you’re done sailing around, you can either fold in the amas (great for transporting), or remove them altogether. The pedal boat aspect of the Tandem Island is achieved using Hobie’s innovative and trademark MirageDrive® system. The unique setup includes two leg-powered underwater blades that move back and forth to efficiently propel the Tandem Island through the water. These durable appendages also can fold flat against the hull, making this craft easily beachable. “Anyone who loves getting out on the water and enjoying some adventure will love the Hobie Tandem Island,” says Ingrid Niehaus. “It’s the best of both worlds: Using the MirageDrive® when there is no wind, and adding the roller furling sail when there is.” ★

ust about anyone who’s spent time around boats knows that when it comes to versatility, center console boats are at the top of the heap. Whether it’s fishing, watersports or gunkholing, the open layout and utility of a center console often is hard to beat. That is, until nature calls; or you want to serve more than just Doritos to your happy hour guests. Hunt Yachts is taking aim at that quandary with its Hunt 32cc — a boat that has the attributes of both a center console and a day boat. What’s a day boat, you ask? It’s generally any boat that has sufficient accommodations (head, shower, galley) aboard for day cruising, but isn’t a vessel you’d necessarily do long-range cruising with. Hunt Yachts decided to mix the two themes, and the result is a capable, deep-V, center console boat with ample amenities that make it an ideal day boat. Step down through the offset companionway on the port side of the center console unit and you’ll find a galley to port, a single berth forward, an enclosed head and shower area, and a standalone washbasin with freshwater

mixer to starboard. Lounging seems to be the focus up on deck — luxurious and comfortable J-shaped lounge in the bow features a sturdy teak table, while aft is a pair of flip-down benches that increase cockpit seating. Under the helm seating, to starboard, is an optional pullout stainless steel fridge. Just aft of that is a flip-up lid that hides a washbasin, with the option to add a fishing station with livewell or entertainment station with grill. Standard power on the Hunt 32cc is a pair of Yamaha F250 four-stroke outboards that can push this boat up to around 45 knots. She also can be outfitted with twin F300 or F350 four-stroke outboards, or single Volvo Penta diesel or gasoline inboard power. “We call the Hunt 32cc ‘salty and sweet’,” says Hunt Yachts president Peter Van Lancker. “Salty because the Hunt deep-V delivers a great ride in all conditions; and sweet because she’s got real luxury features — lots of seating, a real head, easy access to the space below, and options you can choose to personalize the boat for the way you want to use it.” ★

Touting a 3-stateroom, 2-head layout below, Riviera packs in the amenities throughout, especially on the main deck. As is the case with many of its models, Riviera promotes indoor/outdoor alfresco living, accomplished via the stainless steel framed tempered glass window in the aft salon bulkhead. Flip it up like an awning, slide the salon door over and, voila; the salon and aft deck now become one airy, luxurious area.

Spacious salon

Anchoring this large, open layout is the galley, which is aft along the port side. The U-shaped design offers three sides of countertop space and under-counter appliances. The work station features a convection microwave oven, drawer-style dishwasher, multiple hidden-drawer refrigerators and freezers, two-burner electric flat cook top with pop-up fiddles to secure pots, deep stainless sink, sink cover that doubles as cutting board and self-closing drawer storage. There are overhead cabinets that run along the port side, keeping the overall look clean and not impeding visibility from stem to stern. Cabinets are constructed of American Oak wood with a satin finish, but you can opt for high gloss. Thanks to the open layout, Riviera ensures that no matter where guests are located, they will be connected. Adding to that thought is the forward dining and entertainment area. There’s a roomy, U-shaped dining settee with split-table to port, which lowers to become a coffee table for a more casual setting. With sweeping visibility from both sides (thanks to the huge forward and open side windows), this area will soon become a preferred viewing spot. A pop-up, 40-inch TV and sound system in the forward console also make this an ideal entertainment area. Across to starboard is a seemingly innocent, three-section sofa, but it has two secrets: The center base pulls out and becomes an ottoman; and the bottom of the aft sofa section has a flip-up wood table that fills the hole from the ottoman. It transforms into a second dining area, perfect for the kids’ meals or game time. Of course, it also is fully functional simply as a comfortable sofa to stretch out on.

Sleep in style

Riviera keeps the “relaxation” motif throughout and doesn’t disappoint with accommodations below deck, complete with an atrium design that allows light to flow in from above. There are three staterooms that can be configured as you see fit. Make the mid-ship room the master, finished in fabrics and leatherette materials with satin oak and teak accent woods. It also boasts a full walk-around queen berth with storage underneath, end tables, 26-inch LCD TV home theater, cedar-lined hanging lockers across the headboard area, and an en suite head. The head is generous, complete with basin sink, ample counter space, upper and lower cabinets, toilet with teak-capped seat, and large shower stall. The 52 also sports large, rectangular hull-side windows, so lounging in the stateroom doesn’t mean you’re sitting in a cave. Prefer to have the master up front? No problem. The forward stateroom also has a centerline queen berth that’s hinged for access to storage underneath, 22-inch LCD TV, overhead cabinets

and cedar hanging lockers. As the master, the head will be configured as private. The third stateroom has adult-sized split twin beds and plenty of storage. An optional washer and dryer can be outfitted in the closet area — perfect for the cruising couple.

Safety first

Riviera Yachts keeps safety in mind, noticeable from the abundance of overhead grab rails and railings. I also appreciate that the battery switch and breaker console are in its own concealed panel just outside the aft door at the mezzanine. Too many times battery switches are located in the engine room. In other configurations, if a fire were to break out, you’d have to open the hatch to access the switch, which would give the fire oxygen to facilitate combustion. Here, power can be shut down while a situation is assessed without compromising a potential fire-area. Volvo pod drives can be reached via the cockpit deck hatches; great for servicing and keeping an eye on the prize. Accessing fuel filters, sea strainers, Onan generator and other operating gear in the engine room is fairly easy around the twin Volvo Penta IPS 950 engines. Operation of the Riviera 52 is whisper quiet, thanks to the underwater exhaust, insulated air filtration and improved turbochargers. With a fuel capacity of 925 gallons, she can run at more than 20 knots and get a 300-nautical-mile range result.

Step on up

Perhaps the most fun to be had is up on the fly. From the interior floating staircase you’ll find a well-designed, spacious and functional 106-square-foot cockpit and mezzanine deck. With a forward helm to port complete with multiple chartplotter, radar and fish finder displays, Volvo Penta engine display, VHF, stereo and plenty more, the 52 is ready for any waters, be them blue or green, in any corner of the world. Along with the electronic throttle controls, there’s also the Volvo Penta joystick control option. If you’ve never run a yacht with a joystick, fear not — the 52 is utterly responsive with the joystick and pod drive combination, putting the yacht exactly where you want it to go. Sit with the captain in the second helm seat or on the L-shaped plush settee to starboard, or crack open a cold one at the wet bar with sink and fridge. Add in a 26-inch LED TV and stereo system to create yet another spot for relaxing. For anglers, there are rod holders across from the aft railing and optional aft corner engine controls so the captain can eyeball the fight while running the yacht. Keep in mind this is a fully integrated fiberglass enclosed bridge, with large windows, side sliders and strata glass aft window panels that easily open to communicate with those below. And it’s solid — no creaking or groaning as we ran the chop. To sum it up, Riviera continues to help its owners achieve the ultimate boating experience; the Riviera 52 Enclosed Flybridge is the latest addition to aid in that pursuit. Get on one and you’ll see how the number “two” can mean so much more than you ever thought possible. ★

Distinctive voices, especially those with a rich British accent, create quite the impression. To help paint the setting for our review of the Pursuit OS 325, watch a

video clip of actor John Gielgud in the movie Arthur, starring Dudley Moore. Here I am, on my hands and

knees, in the sole of this boat, inspecting the beefy hardware, when out of nowhere I hear this regally

delivered statement, “She is quite the gentlemen’s fishing boat!”

Power up Also visible while out of the water was the 3-hp bow thruster — extremely adequate for a boat of this length and far less of a pricey option compared to joystick engine control. Factory rigged with twin F300 Yamaha Outboards that comfortably cruise at 30 mph — or in “outrun the storm mode” 48 mph — these proven power plants take nourishment from EPA-compliant, lined, 300-gallon rotomolded fuel tanks with engine pickups, shutoff valves and digital level

Like a prescient butler, Gary Twigg of Quality Boats of Tampa Bay embraced his chance to “alert the media” and quietly slipped aboard this 32-footer to explain the “yacht-caliber” details. Twigg’s career in boating began in the United Kingdom, when he was only 16 years old and worked as a carpenter’s apprentice. He’s been around boats ever since. As one of the top salesmen in the country, he knows who’s likely to consider the Pursuit, the competition models of a Grady-White and Boston Whaler, and is eminently qualified to deliver a most compelling case for purchase. “That 316L stainless steel hinge and latch system on the twin cockpit sole fish boxes is precisely the level of quality you’ll find throughout all 34 feet, 6 inches,” Twigg exclaims with exacting precision. Indeed, even before boarding I noticed the gleam from the stainless steel, plow-style anchor that is threaded through the bow and held firmly in place between stem anchor rollers with an 8-inch mooring cleat, chain and 200 feet of half-inch rode. There’s no shortage of stainless fittings, all contributing to a sense of security and well-planned construction.

indicator. This, by the way, is where Jeeves steps in to point out custom-built fuel lines with mechanically crimped fittings. “It’s the little things, Sir.” Outboards, rather than inboards, provide a far less cluttered mechanical space. Access through the molded deck hatch with gasket and stainless steel gas spring leads to a gentlemen’s workshop of fresh and raw water pumps, a livewell cyclone pump with bronze sea strainer and a fish box evacuation pump with dedicated valves. Without saying a word, Twigg simply pushes a rocker switch to illuminate the oceana blue, 24-gallon recirculating livewell. Ah yes, the crease in the pressed trousers.

Added amenities Four stainless steel rod holders and a pair of rocket launchers welded into the Bausch hardtop complement the under-gunwale rod storage (port and starboard). The cockpit tackle center is a sportsman’s envy, with lure tube, tackle tray and bucket storage. With the promise of a fresh catch, you’ll appreciate one of my favorite options found on our test boat: The Kenyon all seasons outdoor grill. A fixture on nearly every legacy yacht today, this award-winning, smokeless and easy-to-clean electric grill is worthy of many paragraphs. Suffice it to say I’m so impressed that we bought one for the house and ditched the big grill that looked more like a rust bucket. Here’s a tip: Order the griddle component and surprise your crew one morning with blueberry pancakes at sea. The grill is flush mounted into the entertainment center with sink, hot/cold mixing faucet, cutting board, dedicated storage, 120V outlet with GFI protection and hinged fiberglass lids and doors.

Ride in style Built in Fort Pierce, Florida, the OS 325 has a Great Lakes pedigree as part of the S2 – Tiara Yachts family. Offshore, salt- or freshwater presents uniform challenges. Pursuit understands first and foremost that engineering ruggedness must include a nod toward pleasing design topsides and below deck. From the premium J.L. stereo speakers (seven total) and Polk audio system, to year-round climate control in the enclosed helm, a gentleman always will be refreshed, regardless of the outdoor temperature. The fiberglass hardtop forms the shell of this finely appointed helm station. The noteworthy custom windshield system features crystal-clear, laminated glass, tempered side glass and a fiberglass frame. The electrically actuated center vent window, along with two overhead vents, lets air flow through without the consequences of a windblown look. An L-shaped lounger to port and the captain’s chair starboard are trimmed in handsome, two-tone, UV-protected vinyl. Generous space for flat panel

electronics of your choice allow for “customization,” depending on just how much conspicuous consumption you care to put on public display. Seems to me that a pair of MFDs would offer great views of a chartplotter, radar, Chirp sonar, and, if so inclined, a video of the Cubs in post-season play. Hey, a guy can dream, right?

Step inside “Shall we go below?” Gary gestures with polished politeness. To satisfy the needs of two distinctive customer profiles — those downsizing from spacious battlewagons and new customers exploring their upward mobility “two-footitis” phase — the Pursuit OS 325 offers a nice blend of amenities. The forward berth easily can convert into a dinette, while under the raised helm the aft full-size berth offers room for at least one middle-aged adult, a couple of grandkids, or a convenient storage area for everything else brought on board for a weekend escape. The head actually looks imported from a much larger yacht. Sporting a designer glass bowl sink with Corian countertop, vanity mirror and pullout shower wand, one easily can stand, turn and brush teeth without banging elbows into walls. The portside galley has a matching Corian countertop with molded sink, 12V refrigerator, room for an optional microwave, and a single-burner Kenyon glass cook top. The OS 325 is positioned in the middle of Pursuit’s offshore model lineup, ranging in size from 25 feet to its flagship 385 Offshore. All combine performance, seaworthiness and fishability and compare nicely to the world’s top inboard convertible and express offerings. Now, if they just offered a personal valet with each boat… H

Thousand Islands

Boatho uses Charming boathouses dotting the Thousand Islands’ shorelines add to the area’s nautical allure. BY KIm LuNmaN he Thousand Islands are known for their fabled castles and cottages built on the St. Lawrence River during the Gilded Age more than a century ago. Many of them feature another treasured icon of the Thousand Islands: The boathouse. There are 1,864 islands that make up this archipelago dotting the river between Cape Vincent and Kingston, and Brockville and Morristown. The boathouses here are as synonymous with summer as ice cream. Sadly, these charming boathouses are becoming a thing of the past. Current building restrictions prohibit the construction of residential boathouses due to environmental concerns related to plumbing. But many of these boathouses remain standing — some lavishly refurbished as part of the region’s renaissance. They are as much a part of the cottage architecture here as the beloved “bunky” guesthouses. Boathouses began popping up in the late 1800s when millionaire business barons in New York City discovered and developed this summer cottage colony. Yacht houses were built for steam yachts, and skiff houses protected St. Lawrence skiffs. But Thousand Islands boathouses became more common with the rise of recreational powerboating in the early 1900s, when the area boomed as the Hamptons of its time. “It really had a particularly large impact on this unique region,” says Emmett Smith, curator of the Antique Boat Museum in Clayton, New York. “All of a sudden, people could get to the islands.” Boathouses in the area range from rustic, century-old structures decorated with fishing lures and life jackets to grand retreats with living quarters and rooftop terraces, like the palatial Boldt Castle Yacht House on Wellesley Island across from Heart Island’s Boldt Castle. Some of these boathouses were built with bedrooms, kitchens, fireplaces and even ballrooms. And like every island, each boathouse has a story to tell.

and boathouse — built by Brigadier General Harry C. Kessler in 1900 — as a summer retreat for their four children. It’s said that Kessler designed the home so he could fish while sitting on the veranda. The 7-bedroom Colonial Revival cottage is perched on a granite outcrop like a beacon overlooking the American shipping channel, and all seven of the cottage’s pine-paneled bedrooms have river views. The Boateak, which features everything from jewelry, t-shirts and Christmas decorations to its popular candy sticks, is a favorite stop for boaters every summer. This year marks the Boateak’s 34th season on the 60-acre island. “A lot happens in 34 years,” Sanborn says. “Some who came in here as babies are now coming in with children of their own for candy sticks.”

Bluff Island

Cherry Island, Ontario

The “parking lot” for customers at the Boateak, a nautical boutique on Bluff Island, is a scenic stop along the St. Lawrence River. That’s because the only way to shop at this historic houseboatturned-boater’s boutique is to dock here by boat. Located across from Round Island and near Maple and Picton islands, the Boateak is open seven days a week from May to September. “It’s my baby,” says owner Cookie Tomaiuoli Sanborn of Syracuse, New York. “I just look forward to it every year. It’s a good feeling.” The grandmother of five opened this store in 1982, just four years after she and her late husband, Matt, bought the century-old cottage

Cherry Island, New York

Cherry Islands in Ontario and New York share the same name, but are located in different countries and have very different styles of boathouses. The lavish boathouse on New York’s Cherry Island, called the Yard Arm Boathouse, has been extravagantly rebuilt to modern-day grandeur on a stretch of the St. Lawrence known as Millionaire’s Row near Alexandria Bay. There are several other boathouses with living quarters on this Cherry Island, including a gingerbread boathouse called Edgewater and Cherry Island Boathouse — a century-old boathouse available for overnight rentals. Cherry Island Boathouse is part of a sprawling summer estate called Casa Blanca that’s known for its granite gazebo and gargoyles that line the shore. Kayakers will enjoys a paddle past this cedar-lined boathouse off the shores of Gananoque in the Admiralty Group of Islands in the St. Lawrence River, which has plenty of room for boats. Some of these boathouses were built with bedrooms, kitchen, fireplaces and even ballrooms. And like every island, each boathouse has a story to tell.

Kismet Island

This island’s name stems from the century-old American steam yacht Kismet, though the vintage vessel — depicted in a painting in front of New York City on the Victorian cottage’s living room wall — never moored here. The 140-foot Kismet was built in 1899 and was reportedly last seen in Key West, Florida to take passengers to Cuba, but she was never spotted again. It’s suspected that one of this Canadian island’s owners — a New Jersey pier proprietor — bought china (now found in the cottage’s pantry) from Kismet when it was refitted for charter work. The vintage vessel belonged to William H. Downey, a wealthy businessman from Tenafly, New Jersey, and his wife between 1910 and 1920. The couple cruised the Thousand Islands aboard Kismet, spending summers in Brockville. Kismet’s boathouse has several bedrooms upstairs with spectacular views overlooking the river near Rockport and Ivy Lea near the Thousand Islands International Bridge, not far from The Lost Channel and Benson’s Rift by Hill Island.

Baby Tar Island

This Thousand Islands boathouse on Baby Tar Island near Rockport and the Canadian Middle Channel is one of the largest classic boathouses in the Thousand Islands. The 4-bedroom boathouse features a kitchen, bathroom, living room, porch and granite fireplace in living quarters perched above the river. It’s a cottage in and of itself. It’s part of a historic summer estate currently listed for $2.1 million (CDN) by Sotheby’s International Realty Canada in Gananoque. The lovingly maintained retreat was built in the 1920s for Julia Tallman, a member of the DuPont family. The property has 12 bedrooms and is located across from Grenadier Island.

Tar Island The boathouse on Tar Island, near Baby Tar Island, shelters three classic antique wooden boats. Wooden boats are a common sight in the summer on the river in the Thousand Islands, home of the Antique Boat Museum in Clayton.

Polaris Island

This stunning estate near Gananoque in the Admiralty Group of Islands has an exquisitely refurbished boathouse and a yacht named Fox Pointe at the dock. The current owners remodeled this 2-story cedar shake boathouse in recent years to include a copper dome.

Mudlunta Island

Commodore Charles Edward Britton bought Mudlunta Island near Gananoque in 1875 for a mere $250. The 2-story green boathouse designed with a hip roof and two gables was built around 1900 and is part of this island’s unique history. There are now five cottages on the 8-acre island, which has a panoramic view of the river and surrounding islands. Mudlunta still belongs to descendants of Britton who call this area Britton Bay. This classic boathouse has been in the same family for six generations. The 2-slip boathouse has an upstairs for accommodations and evokes of nostalgia for the summer residents. “I have a photograph somewhere of my mother sitting on the roof of the boathouse,” says Dave Orr, a fourth-generation Mudlunta Islander of Ivy Lea, Ontario. This island has an even longer marine history than its boathouse; Commodore Britton scuttled a 112-foot schooner built in 1870 off its shores. It’s still visible below the river’s surface today.

Brockville

Downriver from Gananoque, this cheerful boathouse is located in Brockville, the “City of the Thousand Islands,” across from Morristown, which is the eastern gateway to the Thousand Islands. This boathouse — restored and renovated by its current owners — overlooks the beautiful Brock Isles and Brockville Narrows, a popular area for boating and ship watching. No matter where you boat in the Thousand Islands, boathouses are an undeniable part of its riverscape. They are as much a regional icon as the castles and lighthouses are. There’s something romantic about a boathouse. Whether it’s a yacht house, a luxuriously restored boathouse with modern-day amenities, or a rustic, 1-slip boathouse with old buoys and cobwebs, the boathouse is a place filled with memories of summers past, where your most future plan might be the next barbecue or boat ride. Whether you’ve got a Boston Whaler, Cobalt or an old tinny in the slip, it’s the place that’s closest to the river here. The boathouse connects you to the cottage and summer, and most importantly, the Thousand Islands. H

Yacht House. Built in 1899 — one year before the construction of Boldt Castle on Heart Island began — the Boldt Castle Yacht House was built as the palace of boathouses and is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historical Places. The 7-story structure was built to accommodate as many as 60 of Boldt’s watercraft, including skiffs, yachts, runabouts and workboats. Some of his fleet included the 114-foot La Duchesse houseboat and several steam yachts, such as the 102-foot Louise, 80-foot Presto, and 81-foot Clover, as well as powerful race boats. The Boldt Castle Yacht House is a Thousand Islands treasure. It even included a residence for Boldt’s yacht crew. The steel-framed wooden structure built on deep-water footings has survived a century of harsh winters. Today it, too, is a popular tourist attraction with several of Boldt’s original fleet on display. Boldt, the proprietor of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City, famously halted construction of the 120-room castle after his wife, Louise, tragically died in 1904. The castle is being refurbished one room at a time by the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority, but the boathouse still stands tall as another testament to Boldt and the area’s Gilded Age.

he charming coastal town of Cape Vincent— located about 25 miles north of Watertown — is known for the Victorian-era Tibbetts Point Lighthouse, which stands watch over the Great Lakes and neighboring Canada and marks the entrance to the St. Lawrence Seaway. Cape Vincent overlooks Wolfe Island, the largest of the estimated 1,865 islands (or Thousand Islands) scattered between here and Morristown, New York and Brockville, Ontario. The Thousand Islands are known for their historic cottages and castles, including Boldt Castle on Heart Island (near Alexandria Bay) and Singer Castle on Dark Island further downriver in Chippewa Bay. Cape Vincent offers visitors a window to this scenic waterway that opens up into the Great Lakes. Whether you visit by lake, river or road, stepping foot in Cape Vincent is like taking a step back in time. Its 188-year-old lighthouse is a beacon for tourism, but the town’s annual French Festival has been stealing the limelight every summer for nearly half a century.

French connection

The community of about 2,000 has transformed itself into a French village for one weekend every July for 47 years during the French Festival. The Cape’s French roots run deep: Explorer Samuel de Champlain was in the area in 1615; and in 1654, Jesuit Missionaries visited the native Onondaga and Iroquois Indian Tribes, who used the area as their hunting grounds.

“People always ask us about the French connection,” says Cape Vincent’s Chamber of Commerce executive director Shelley Higgins. Stores on the main street have names like Chateau, Belle-Epoque gift shop and French Towne Market. A stone’s throw away from the water is Breakwater Gallery. This cozy, friendly gallery showcases the works of artists from the Thousand Islands region. Browse original paintings in every medium, as well as sculpture, glass, pottery, jewelery, fabric creations, original cards and more. The village embraces its unique heritage set against the backdrop of a sweeping coastline that changes constantly with the water and prevailing winds. “It’s very quaint,” says Higgins. “It’s beautiful — every day is different — and it’s very serene.” In the early 1800s, French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte reportedly stated that he wanted to move to Cape Vincent, though he was never able to escape exile in the South Atlantic. French and German settlers immigrated to Cape Vincent around this time, with the help of James LeRay de Chaumont, who moved from France to America in the 1700s and acquired much of the area’s land. The town’s namesake comes from Chaumont’s son, Vincent LeRay. Chaumont brought a contingent of French nobility, including Count Francis Peter Real, once the chief of

Napoleon and horses at the French Festival (top); Close-up of Tibbetts Point Lighthouse (bottom).

Local fare

Stop and stay a while

The town offers much more than baguettes when it comes to local restaurants. Ann’s Fisherman Fare is a popular diner serving breakfast and lunch and is known for its blueberry pancakes. Taste of Design on the main street is a gathering place serving up gourmet coffee and muffins next to its boutique gift shop. Captain Jack’s, a favorite with locals and tourists, has a riverfront patio by the ferry dock in the heart of the village. Enjoy local draft beer, including War of 1812 Ale, burgers, steamed clams and seafood while watching the river go by. It goes without saying that Thousand Island Dressing is a staple in these parts, but make sure you don’t miss out on the local fish, especially perch. Many restaurants here have fish frys on the menu — a nod to anglers’ shore dinners of the past. Snug Harbor Bar Restaurant and Marina offers a casual setting and patio overlooking Mud Bay — a good stop for pub fare including pizza, wings and chili. Aubrey’s Inn is a year-round restaurant located on the

main street and just steps from the St. Lawrence. Aubrey’s boasts the largest selection of beer in the Thousand Islands, and you can enjoy live music here. Cape Vincent has plenty of accommodations, from historic lighthouses to mansions. There’s the Buccaneer Motel and the Cape Motel. The latter is a close walk to the boat ramp and has a convenience store and laundromat. The Roxy Hotel, established in 1894, has 15 rooms. There are waterfront cottages at Angel Rock Waterfront Cottages and Riverside Cottages. You even can stay overnight at Tibbetts Point Lighthouse, which was converted into a hostel after the iconic landmark was automated in 1981. For a more luxurious retreat, rent a mansion built by a distinguished officer in Napoleon’s army in 1838 called Maple Grove. The Greek Revival manor on the St. Lawrence is listed in the National Register of Historical Places. Once you visit the area, you’ll find yourself wanting to return, or perhaps purchase your own parcel of this paradise. police under Napoleon. Count Real built a home in Cape Vincent — noted for its unusual architecture as “the cup and saucer house”— for Napoleon, in an attempt to rescue the exiled leader from the island of St. Helena. However, Napoleon never got the chance to make Cape Vincent home; he died in 1821. To this day, Cape Vincent embraces its French heritage. Thousands of people flock here to take part in the annual two-day French Festival (July 11-12 this year) that transports this sleepy town back in time. The village is festooned with French and American flags during the festival, with a mass held in French at the Catholic Church. Dignitaries wear berets and period costumes to honor the town’s French ancestors, while local merchants sell freshly baked baguettes and French pastries.

Farmer’s Market

For a taste of local history, visit the Vincent Historical Museum. Located in one of the oldest stone buildings in the village, it originally served as barracks for soldiers in the War of 1812. Later on, the Forsythe Brothers used the building as their ironwork factory for sailing vessels and cook stoves. You can explore the underwater world of the Thousand Islands at the Cape Vincent Fisheries Station and Aquarium, open from May to September. The tanks feature fish species from the St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario. And located just a short drive south from Cape Vincent are the villages of Three Mile Bay and Chaumont on the shore of Chaumont Bay, known as the “Golden Crescent” and largest freshwater bay in the world. Boaters are attracted to the coastal region of Cape Vincent for more than just its history. The Great Lakes and St. Lawrence are perfect places for sailing, boating, ship watching and fishing. Located in Peos Bay on the St. Lawrence River is Precision Marine (PRECISIONMARINE.NET) , a full-service marina and certified/authorized dealer for Volvo Penta, Mercury and MerCruiser, with a variety of outboards in stock. They also offer seasonal dockage, storage, marine store and boat maintenance. Just downriver from Cape Vincent is Northern Marine (NORTHERNMARINEINC.COM), a full-sevice marina, conveniently located between Clayton and Fisher’s Landing in Spicer Bay. It is the area’s main resource for prop repair and sales, and offers fuel, pump-out, summer dockage and storage, as well as Mercury-certified repair services and towing.

Winery and vineyard

For a wine tasting experience in a serene setting, the Cape Winery and Vineyard (THECAPEWINERY.COM) on the historic Deerlick Farm in Cape Vincent should be on your itinerary. Located less than 5 minutes from the village, this picturesque family-farm winery opened in the Spring of 2013 and is the newest stop on the Thousand Islands Seaway Wine Trail. David and Sandra Fralick started their vineyard in 2007, and after a few years of perfecting their wine-making skills opened their winery and tasting room. It’s already considered one of the premier wineries in the area.

Clayton: Classic Thousand Islands If you love boats, you’ll love Clayton.

Clayton is located 13 miles east of Cape Vincent and is considered the classic antique wooden boat capital of North America. It is home to the Antique Boat Museum (ABM.ORG), a premier freshwater nautical museum that features an annual boat show and auction every summer and displays the largest collection of antique and classic boats in the United States. “The ABM’s annual Boat Show and Auction is one of the nation’s most prestigious antique boat shows and the longest running of its kind,” says Michael J. Folsom, the museum’s director of marketing and communications. “With boats from across the country, each show always is sure to be a varnish and mahogany wonderland of beauty.” The 51st Annual Boat Show and Auction is held the first weekend of August (this year it will be held July 31–August 2) and showcases classic antique wooden boats. The emphasis at this year’s show is on Lymans, but the event typically attracts “woodies” of all kinds, including Gar Woods and Chris-Crafts. You also can cruise the river aboard several of its wooden boats — a thrilling way to see the Thousand Islands. The ABM is full throttle into its 2015 season, with several new exhibits including “Canoes To Go,” featuring a unique collection of portable and collapsible boats with model years ranging from 1840 to 2015. Also new at the museum this year is a gallery of John Cooper Upham paintings, which depict iconic passenger steamboats of the St. Lawrence River. Later in the summer, the Antique Boat Museum will host the Caravan Stage Company — a theatre troupe that will perform on a 90-foot tall ship anchored in the St. Lawrence River. The world-renowned group of acrobats and actors will entertain guests at two separate shows: One August 14 and another August 15. Enjoy the river-themed shops and waterfront restaurants with patios that line Clayton’s Riverside Drive, including Bella’s and The Channelside Restaurant — perfect perches for boat watching. Explore 1000 Islands River Rat Cheese, Coyote Moon Winery, Corbin’s River Heritage and Michael Ringer’s St. Lawrence Gallery. There are a few newer restaurants to visit here: Johnston House Restaurant; the Wood Boat Brewery just across from ABM; and the Seaway Grille for fine dining at the Thousand Islands Harbor Hotel — a spectacular addition to Clayton’s waterfront with a view of passing ships and Calumet Island. —K.L.

America meets Canada

Cape Vincent’s ferry service, Horne’s Ferry, makes this place not only a spot where the lake meets the river, but also where America meets Canada. Wolfe Island, with year-round ferry service to Kingston, is the largest of the Thousand Islands at 22 by 7 miles, dotted with schools, farms, churches, restaurants, a bakery and a grocery store. It has one of the largest sandy beaches in the Thousand Islands, aptly titled Big Sandy Beach. Wolfe Island is just a short ferry ride from Kingston, and is home to about 1,400 residents year-round, with as many as 4,000 islanders in summer. The island was part of the traditional hunting lands of the Tyendinaga Mohawk people, and its original name is Ganounkouesnot (meaning “long

island standing up”). It was later named after General James Wolfe by British settlers. The ferry from Kingston, Wolfe Islander III, is operated by Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation and is free of charge. The Horne’s Ferry is an international link to Cape Vincent and has operated since 1802. Remarkably, the toll ferry, which operates from May to October, is still owned by the first license holder’s descendants: George and Bruce Horne. It is one of the rare U.S.-Canadian international border crossings where customs are privately operated.

Carleton Island

Cape Vincent also is located off the shores of Carleton Island, an American island with private cottages overlooking Wolfe Island that’s known for its steep and storied history. Boaters can get a close look at Carleton Villa, a long-vacant waterfront estate built in 1894 on a rugged point. It was one of the first grand properties built in the Thousand Islands during the region’s Gilded Age by William O. Wyckoff, who made his fortune marketing Remington typewriters. He tragically died his first night in the mansion in 1895 at the age of 60, apparently of a heart attack. No one has lived in the estate for seven decades (though it has been listed for sale for $495,000). Carleton Island’s rich history predates its once-opulent villa. It was a British military fort during the American Revolution. More than two centuries later, that history still is evident. Rubble from barrack chimneys at Fort Haldimand remains. There are no roads here — summer residents get around the island’s rugged terrain by ATVs. The British warship HMS Ontario, discovered in 2008 by divers in Lake Ontario, was built and launched from Carleton Island in 1780 — the same year it sank. Today, there are about 34 cottages on what was once a farm community. The Thousand Islands Land Trust in Clayton has owned 7 acres of land on the island since 1986, including the ruins of Fort Haldimand. Back on shore, Cape Vincent offers boaters a chance to trek through some of its history and enjoy its restaurants and shops overlooking the harbor. Some of its stores post signs saying “Bienvenue” during the French Festival, which means “Welcome.” Spend some time here — where America meets France and Canada, and where lake meets river — and it’s clear in any language that “the Cape” is a most welcoming port of call. ★

Charlevoix, Michigan Picturesque cottage in historic C&O Club offers unparalleled views.

I

n 1892, the first Chesapeake and Ohio Railway (C&O) railcar arrived in front of the Charlevoix Railroad Depot. Today, the area surrounding the train tracks is known as the C&O Club, a premier residential community of 36 units — including this 3,980-square-foot waterfront home — alongside the calm Raspberry Bay on beautiful Lake Charlevoix. “They’ve kept the nostalgia and mystique of the area,” says Scott Wilson, son-in-law of homeowner Beatty Gadaleto. “You can see where the train trestle went from Round Lake.” Realtor Mitts Lee describes this 5-bedroom, 4.5-bath home as “quality craftsmanship.” Featuring 150 feet of coveted sandy shoreline, the exterior of the home is a destination in itself; complete with wraparound covered patio with stunning white pillars that extends the length of the home, a gorgeous landscaped yard, and an L-shaped dock large enough to accommodate three boats. “My favorite part of the home is the deck facing the water,” Wilson says. “We would have a dozen chairs out there and congregate because you’re facing a picture everyday.”

The airy interior is just as exquisite. The inviting custom kitchen features an expansive island with granite countertops, slate flooring, high-end appliances and a pantry. Just off the kitchen is a cozy sitting area with fireplace adjacent to the large, semi-formal dining area that sports a lengthy farmhouse table, intended to fit the whole family and then some. The Brazilian cherry flooring in the dining room flows into the great room with a floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace and beamed ceilings. “The fireplace right off the kitchen is where you can hang out and have coffee in the mornings, and a bigger fireplace in the great room is where you can sit in the evening and watch the boaters go right by the house,” Lee says. Situated next to the great room is the office, with built-in cabinets; and next door, the main-floor master walkout features heated floors in the en suite bathroom. The upper floor houses the four guest bedrooms. “My standing joke is that it is the ‘Taj Mahal,’” Wilson says. “It’s a fabulous open floor plan home with majestic views of the lake. We’d love to see another family enjoy it like we have.” ★

Spring Lake, Michigan Mid-century modern custom home boasts expansive views.

C

lean lines, ample windows and an open floor plan add to the mid-century modern ambience of this 3,185-square-foot custom home, renovated from top to bottom in 2014. “The home originally had a mid-century flair to it, so we tried to stay true to that,” says homeowner Corinne Willis, who designed the home. “It’s kind of modern, more on the contemporary side, so it has a lot of high-end finishes; but it’s a very comfortable house.” Willis works for Versatile Wood Solutions — a manufacturer of custom fixtures and interiors that provided the high-gloss and durable PET-coated cabinetry for the kitchen and bathrooms; a perfect material for the busiest rooms in the home, as they are resistant to scratches and chips. The gourmet kitchen features quartz countertops and high-end appliances, including a Wolf range with dual ovens and a built-in Sub-Zero refrigerator, freezer and wine cooler. The kitchen opens into an expansive great room with linear fireplace, and both rooms feature radient tile flooring and a wall of windows lining the lakeside patio.

The upper level boasts all four spacious bedrooms, three full baths and a large “flex floor.” The current owners are using it as a playroom, but the room could be converted into a movie theatre, rec room or “man cave.” It’s plumbed for a wet bar and has all the electrical in the ceiling and walls necessary to hook up a projector. “My favorite part of the home is the master bedroom,” Willis says. “It almost feels like you’re sitting out on the water when you are sitting in bed — all you see is the lake and the trees. It’s really serene and comfortable.” Not to be outdone, the exterior of the home flaunts a grand hardscaped patio sitting up off the lake and overlooking 100 feet of frontage on the main body of Spring Lake. At the water level, the deep-water dock has all the power you need to hook up a large boat. “The whole main level walks out to the back patio, so it’s really easy to come and go off the lake and the boat,” Willis says. “It’s really low-maintenance, a great space for entertaining and has great views of the lake.” ★

Algonac Harbour Club Full-service marina celebrates three decades on St. Clair River.

T

hirty years ago, a vacated factory on the banks of the St. Clair River — once a thriving hub for manufacturing Chris-Craft boats — had new life breathed into it following construction of the Algonac Harbour Club. Two of the original buildings, along with the iconic water tower, still stand today, reminding boaters of the harbor’s historic significance as the marina celebrates three decades in operation. “We converted the site into a large, deep water marina with all the modern amenities, while keeping the nautical history in Algonac,” says owner Pete Beauregard Sr. “We had a vision that it would be the place people would want to keep their boats, almost like a weekend resort.” Settled in a convenient haven on the body of water connecting Lake Huron and Lake Erie, Algonac Harbour Club is a natural place to stop for boaters cruising south to Cleveland, or heading north to Michigan’s thumb. The full-service marina boasts more than 350 boat slips (100 transient) and an array of services and amenities: Gas and diesel fuel stations; pump-out; free Wi-Fi and satellite TV; onsite

service with Colony Marine; and 50-ton travel lift. One of the original Chris-Craft buildings is now being used as heated indoor winter storage, which can hold more than 300 boats. The marina also has a slew of family-friendly amenities, including a dog run, heated swimming and kiddie pool, volleyball, basketball and tennis courts, and an onsite restaurant and tiki bar. “We are known for our friendliness and having lots of events,” Beauregard says. “We’re not just a place to park your boat.” Underneath the shade of the water tower, the marina has a jam-packed lineup of summer events, including outdoor concerts and the infamous Jimmy Buffett Parrothead Party (August 15). Paying tribute to its nautical history, Algonac Harbour Club also hosts the annual Antique Boat Show (June 26-28), and next door, Colony Marine hosts an annual fall show (September 17-20) called the Corn Roast and Boat Show. “We just make a great destination,” Beauregard says. “We’ve maintained a high level of clean marina operations since Day One and have been voted in the past the best marina on Lake St. Clair.” ★

1 Morgantown, West Virginia — May 25 During Memorial Day weekend, a 23-foot Malibu Wakesetter slammed into the shoreline of Cheat Lake, near Morgantown, West Virginia. Capt. Bill Persinger, with the Division of Natural Resources Police, told the Charleston Daily Mail 12 passengers were injured in the crash, and that they were are all young adults. A 20-year-old Morgantown man was charged with 13 misdemeanor charges; 11 are boating under the influence causing injury, according to an accident report released by the West Virginia DNR. He also is being charged with one count of insufficient personal flotation devices. The report stated that the operator fell from behind the wheel and lost control of the boat. Alcohol, drugs and excessive speed were listed as contributing factors. Report by CHARLESTONDAILYMAIL.COM; photo courtesy of WDTV.COM

2 Salt Lake City, Utah — June 1 One adult and three children were killed following a boating accident on Utah’s Bear Lake. Seven passengers were aboard when a severe storm hit the area and capsized the boat. According to a Facebook post by the father of a surviving child, “A storm came up with 70 mph winds that created 6-foot-high waves that filled the boat and eventually capsized. All were wearing life jackets. They were about 3.5 miles from shore. The four 13-year-old girls tried to swim for help, but due to winds, waves and frigid water temps of 53 degrees, they were unsuccessful… A special thanks to the search and rescue and volunteers who found all of them and saved my daughter, her friend, and a deceased friend’s mother.” Report by FOX13NOW.COM; photo courtesy of HJNEWS.COM

Fishing Vessel Capsizes in Alaska

3 Juneau, Alaska — June 10 Sector Juneau watchstanders received a mayday call from the captain of Kupreanof, a 73-foot fishing vessel, reporting that the boat was taking on water. Watchstanders directed the launch of an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Air Station Sitka, where aircrew rescued four men from a life raft. “The crew of Kupreanof did the right thing by calling for help, putting on their immersion suits and safely abandoning the ship,” says Lt. Ben Neal, a pilot at Air Station Sitka. “Emergencies can occur at any time, and having the right safety equipment is critical when operating in Alaska’s extreme environment.” All four mariners were reported in good condition. USCG personnel will attempt to determine the cause of the sinking. Report by USCGNEWS.COM; photo courtesy of USCG AIR STATION SITkA

Four Rescued From Lake Erie Cleveland, Ohio — June 13 A USCG crew from Station Marblehead, Ohio rescued four people from a capsized boat on Lake Erie near Kelleys Island. One of the boaters used a cell phone to notify watchstanders at USCG Sector Detroit that the vessel was taking on water and passed his location, but communication was eventually lost and could not be reestablished. When the Coast Guardsmen arrived on scene, all four people were in the water with life jackets on. The USCG Smartphone app allows boaters to call the nearest USCG sector command center if they are in need of assistance, but the Coast Guard reminds all boaters that cell phones should be a backup means of communication, not the primary, since they often don’t work offshore or when wet. A VHF-FM marine radio or personal locator beacon always should be the boaters’ main means of distress notification. Report by USCGNEWS.COM; photo courtesy of USCG App

Eight Rescued From San Carlos Bay

4 Sanibel, Florida — June 8 A 22-foot boat sank about a mile southeast of Sanibel, Florida, in San Carlos Bay. U.S. Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg watchstanders were contacted via MERT activation reporting they were taking on water and sinking. A good Samaritan, a 29-foot response boatcrew from USCG Station Fort Myers Beach, Florida and a Tow BoatUS crew arrived on scene and rescued all eight people from the water. No injuries were reported. Report by COASTGUARDNEWS.COM; photo courtesy of USCG

Three Adults Rescued from Sinking Vessel San Francisco, California — May 13 At approximately 6:12 p.m., watchstanders at U.S. Coast Guard Sector San Francisco received a 911 relay from the San Rafael Police Department, reporting a vessel was taking on water in San Pablo Bay. Watchstanders established cell phone communication with the three people aboard the 18-foot boat, but while gathering more information they lost communications with the distressed vessel. A USCG rescue helicopter crew was able to locate the vessel. Once the helicopter arrived on scene, the USCG 29-foot response boat crew was diverted directly to the boat taking on water. By the time the response boat arrived, the distressed boat was partially submerged. The boatcrew rescued three people from the half-sunken vessel. “Life jackets were critical to a successful outcome in this rescue case,” says Petty Officer Jessica Rockson. “I’m glad we were able to locate and bring these three people safely ashore.” Report by USCGNEWS.COM; photo courtesy of USCG H
