Back on the Water
FEBRUARY 2016 | VOLUME LXX, NO. 2
I
have been asked over the years more times than I can count, “How did you get to own a boating magazine?” The fact is that from as far back as I can remember, I have always had an abiding interest in all things nautical. In grade school I would send away for catalogs of boats, motors, etc. My family would spend a good part of each summer at a little cottage in Raymond, Maine. When I was not on the water, my brother and I were on land attempting to build a sea-worthy craft of green logs. To my way of thinking, owning a boating magazine or being in the recreational marine business was a predestined event. After graduating from college, I accepted a position with a boating magazine in advertising sales. In the fall of 1983, I purchased Lakeland Boating magazine from my employer of 7 years, Peterson Publishing Company. The company was a very successful enterprise, producing 40-plus publications. We were battling the recession of the early 80s, when interest rates were hovering in the 20 percent range. Publishers were looking closely at their numbers and if the numbers did not look good, they got sold. The economy was upside down and interest rates were bouncing like a “yo yo” — at one point I believe the economic turmoil was much like what we have been experiencing since 2008. But it was a great time to buy a business with cash flow and no debt. I moved our offices to Chicago from Port Clinton, Ohio, as Chicago had been my home for several years. I moved the main office into a spare closet at my place, which happened to be a condo. George Lazarus, the marking columnist at the Chicago Tribune gave us a nice write-up, thus introducing O’Meara-Brown Publications/Lakeland Boating to the Chicago market. The day after the announcement, there was a knock at my door. I opened the door and in marched the condo board looking for my staff. I opened the closet door and introduced the board to the world headquarters of O’Meara-Brown Publications. They exited the closet, smiled, wished me luck, and left. For several years, business grew at a reasonable pace. One of our first projects was our Ports of Call Cruise Guides — one guide for each Great Lake. These were immediately successful. We did very well with the guides until the recession took hold, and people stopped cruising and started using their yachts as summer cottages. This past spring, the cruisers came out of hibernation and started up their engines. The growth and continued success of Lakeland Boating has been due to our excellent staff, loyal readers and advertisers. I am indebted to all of you. This is the biggest issue we’ve had in recent years. We are starting to feel the industry coming back and see boats back on the water. This issue is packed with new boats: from our Boat Test on the new Crownline 270 SS (p. 40) and the Beneteau Gran Turismo 40 (p. 44); to a fantastic small boat roundup (p. 48); even a feature from editor Kate Bush about her time aboard the Moorings 514PC (p. 54). Racine, Wisconsin is this month’s Port of Call, highlighting the town’s famous Danish kringle, Frank Lloyd Wright architecture and lakeside events (p. 60). This year not only marks our 70th Anniversary, but also a hopeful sign that things are picking back up in the boating industry — good news for all who love being on the water!

Dear Lakeland Boating, I would like to add some more great local breweries to your list [for the story in the January 2016 issue, “Great Lakes Brew Tour.”] They are Boatyard Brewery, Bells Brewery and Arcadia Brewery in Kalamazoo, Michigan. They all contribute to local nightlife with special events and community involvement. All have great beers to try, if you’re in the area. Thank you for a great magazine. I look forward to each issue. Your friend in boating, —Greg Thomas, Scotts, MI LB: Hi, Greg. We agree, those are great breweries! It broke our hearts a little to leave some of our favorites out (Founders, for example), but we decided to concentrate on those breweries located in coastal towns for easier boater access. We were hoping we’d hear from readers with other suggestions... thanks for your letter!

Gabby, our bichon/poodle mix, has become quite comfortable on our Carver 3207. The first two years, Gabby was confined to doggy camp in our hometown of Davison, Michigan. Finally, during the 2015 season, I convinced the “Admiral” that Gabby would be fine. She has turned into quite the boat dog. Part of her adventure is the two-hour drive to Holland, Michigan every week during the summer. As soon as the cooler comes out, she gets all excited; she knows she’s going to the boat. —Stephen Bromirski, Davison, MI

Canada Delays Decision on Nuclear Waste Site Near Lake Huron
nuclear site photo by steven tomsic
The Canadian government has announced that it’s delaying the decision on whether or not to OK a nuclear waste storage facility near the shore of Lake Huron.
Ontario Power Generation wants to bury about 200,000 cubic meters of low to medium level nuclear waste a half mile below ground level. The area, located at the Bruce Nuclear Generating Station near Kincardine, Ontario, is less than a mile from Lake Huron. According to Michigan Radio, the Trudeau government had a December 2, 2015 deadline to decide whether to OK the nuclear waste site, but the agency has delayed its decision until March 1, 2016. This controversial nuclear waste facility is opposed by many regional governmental and environmental groups.

Silver Lake Sand Dunes, MI Famous for its sand, this charming park knows how to “Do the Dunes!” he large, towering dunes beckon, standing tall as a proud testament to Mother Nature and welcoming those who come to conquer her soaring peaks. Located on the Lake Michigan shoreline between Muskegon and Ludington, Silver Lake is often called Michigan’s “Golden Coast.” With sister cities Hart and Mears nearby, the area promises plenty of prime beach town recreation and fun in the sun. Climb to the top of these 70-foot dunes and be rewarded with gorgeous views of Lake Michigan that, well, seem to go on forever. Some ride the hills and valleys in a dune buggy, others in their own ATV vehicles, and many adventurers just simply hike to the top. The pure joy and exhilaration of running down the dunes is what brings people back, summer after summer. Whatever your preference, boaters coming to Silver Lake Sand Dunes will discover the ultimate outdoor adventure in the sand. Come play in Silver Lake State Park In Michigan, dunes line much of the Great Lakes shore with expanses of continually shifting sand. The Silver Lake Sand Dunes are considered one of the largest living dunes on Lake Michigan, which means they’re still growing and shifting. Along this 4-mile shoreline lies Silver Lake State Park — open from April 1 to October 31 — which features nearly 3,000-acres of protected dunes and mature forests. “The dunes are divided into three
separate areas,” says Deanna Helmlinger, executive director of the Silver Lakes Chamber of Commerce. “The north area features 450 acres for ORV driving, which is very popular, the middle for walking or sandboarding and the south area for dune tours, given by Mac Woods Dune Rides.” The Mac Woods Dune Rides are a perfect introduction to the Dunes. The company has been providing fun, safe rides since 1930 and offers a 7-mile, 40-minute tour that glides up and down the sand in a 4-wheel drive Dune Scooter. Their knowledgeable guides offer valuable insights into the history of the area, as well as the environmental changes that impact the dunes. “What makes these dunes so special is that they’re the only sand dunes you can ride on east of the Mississippi,” says Helmlinger. Lighthouse on the beach There are more lighthouses that line the shores of Lake Michigan than any other state in the U.S. Little Sable Point Lighthouse is rather unique because this 100-foot tall, fully-functioning lighthouse sits right on the beach. Built in 1874, the tower still harbors its original third-order Fresnel lens. For a small admission fee, visitors can tour the lighthouse from May until September and climb to the top. The Sable Point Lighthouse Keepers Association also sponsors free concerts on the beach in July and August. Get your motor running… Ready for the ride of your life? Hop aboard, start the engine and experience an exciting journey through the dunes, bumping high and low across natural sand terrain. Rent a dune buggy large enough for your group with single, two, four, five and six-seater options to sail through the sand. Silver Lake Buggy Rentals offer a variety of vehicles that come with a guaranteed thrill. Take on the dunes in a rugged Jeep Wrangler from Parrot’s Landing in Mears. “You can caravan with a leader through the dunes for an hour-long adventure,” says Dutch Terhaar, general manager, “or you can rent the Jeep and explore the dunes on your own.” One of their most popular tours is the Sunset Tour where you can watch the sunset from the top of a dune. “It’s an incredible experience you will long remember,” Terhaar adds.

Love to water ski or tube? Let Parrot’s Landing pull you along in one of its ski boats on the water. Looking for even more adventure? Hit the waves with a powerful Jet Ski. Surf the dunes on a sandboard You’ve heard of snowboarding. Sandboarding is similar, using the height of the dunes to rapidly leverage speed as you glide down the sand. According to Sandboarding Magazine, the Silver Lake dunes are considered the best place on the Great Lakes for sandboarding because the sand is fast, clean and easily accessible. Rent everything you need for sandboarding at The Sand Box in Mears, which includes the board, special sandboard wax and a helmet. “Our sandboards are specifically designed just for sandboarding,” says Terri Sharpe, owner of The Sand Box. You can choose to sit down and ride like a sled, or stand up. With either type, the boards have to be waxed before each run. “People love it because it’s exhilarating and it’s easy for
kids to do. There’s nothing quite like a run down the dunes under your own power,” adds Sharpe. The Sand Box is open from Memorial Day through Labor Day and carries a full line of bathing suits, body and skim boards for water sports, as well as camping equipment. Fairs and festivals bring out the best Throughout the summer, the Silver Lake Sand Dunes area hosts several weekly festivals showcasing lots of good food, live music and fireworks galore. Want fresh produce to bring back to the boat? From asparagus and apples, to barbecue cook-offs and fresh baked goods, there’s a party for every taste. The Apple and BBQ Cook-Off Festival in September features a craft show, classic auto and truck show, dune buggy show, beer tent, 5K Apple A Day Run/Walk, and of course, great food. Whether you ride the dunes, climb to the peak or build sandcastles on the beach, at Silver Lake Sand Dunes you’re destined to etch your own wonderful memories in the sand. H

CAPT. FRANK LANIER is an award-winning journalist, boat maintenance guru and owner of Capt F.K. Lanier & Associates, Marine Surveyors and Consultants (captfklanier.com).
ASK THE EXPERT by Elizabeth Altick
I Can’t Believe It’s Not Teak! PlasTEAK president William Gribble builds the case for synthetic wood swim platforms. LB: What motivated you to develop PlasTEAK?
Gribble: I had a boat that needed a platform, so I called a company that made outdoor benches. I had noticed the seat was constructed very much like a teak swim platform. I was sure it could be adapted to a boat. LB: Why is PlasTEAK particularly suited for swim platforms? CONTACT PlasTEAK 3489 Sawmill Rd. Akron, OH 44321 330-668-2587
Gribble: The lumber is 100 percent plastic and developed for outdoor use. The boards contain paraffin as part of their makeup. This makes the surface tackier when wet, much like a surfboard that is waxed, so you can stay on it in the water. LB: What is PlasTEAK made of?
Gribble: The boards are recycled high-density polyethylene, or HDPE. It includes post-industrial and post-consumer plastics, as well as color and UV stabilizers. LB: How well does PlasTEAK stand up to harsh marine conditions?
Gribble: Because there is no wood or other fibers, it can sit in water without absorbing or swelling. It’s also easy to clean because nothing can attach to it. The platforms are constructed with stainless steel screws, brackets and hardware.

|
LB: What color choices do I have?
Gribble: The colors available are white, off-white, teak and black. Alternating boards can combine the colors. The slotted area can be closed up somewhat, but some slots need to remain, as they release water pressure from waves. LB: What are other uses for PlasTEAK?
Gribble: The platforms install the same way as a wooden platform. We do require that the platform have a support every two feet with a horizontal leg for each board. We can make the brackets at the same time as the platform so that they are compatible. Step-by-step instructions are included with each platform.
Gribble: The boards can be cut and routed, much like wood, to make hand rails, ladder steps, companion way boards, bow pulpits and various trim pieces. The material is more flexible than wood and expands with temperature. Angled stainless steel can be imbedded to add strength, and oversized screw holes can accommodate some expansion. It won’t replace all wood. But where it does, there is great savings in maintenance.
LB: How do I maintain the platform?
LB: About how much does PlasTEAK cost?
Gribble: The material will stand up to all marine conditions. To clean, most any product can be used, including power washing. Because there is a texture on the boards, the lighter colors will show dirt in the crevasses. These are not stains, just particles that can be cleaned with brushes and soap. The
Gribble: Generally, it is about a third of the cost of teak. Platforms are $.40 per square inch; handrails are $12 per foot for the .875" stock; and $18 per foot for the 1.5" stock. All the prices are on our website and catalog, both for the lumber and for fabricated items. ★
LB: Can owners install it themselves, and if so, what are the steps?

oat shows offer a wonderful opportunity to see all that is new in the marine industry and to compare products prior to purchasing. This is especially true when it comes to innovative, new marine electronics. Many leading marine electronics manufacturers display their latest offerings at major shows, such as the Miami International Boat Show, running February 11 to 15. Many manufacturers not only offer new products, but they also build upon existing product lines, making the electronics that are already available even better. The vast selection of equipment often can be a bit bewildering, but this is the best opportunity to see all that is newly available, push buttons, get a hands-on feel for the equipment and learn from the manufacturers how new products can serve your needs.

Simrad OP50 Navico, the parent company of Lowrance, Simrad and B&G, will have plenty to talk about at the Miami Boat Show. One new offering from Simrad is the OP50. This remote controller eases the operation of multiple NSS evo2 or NSO evo2 displays by centralizing command and making the operation of multiple displays intuitive. By utilizing a rotary dial, along with a keypad and a dedicated key, this new remote allows for quick access to screens, functions and menus in any sea condition. Touchscreens can be awkward to use under severe sea conditions, but the new remote makes getting the information you need up on one or all of your multifunction displays quite easy. Leif Ottosson, CEO of Navico, says, “Captains of vessels of all sizes depend on so many sources of information to make reliable decisions. From radar and sonar imaging, to engine information and even entertainment functions, complete MFD control is now simplified and more convenient for our customers with the compact and discreet OP50 remote controller.” The remote is available in two versions: a vertical one, which can easily mount in the arm of a helm chair or alongside a display; and a horizontal version, which can be mounted remotely or under displays. Either can be dashor flush-mounted with an optional bracket. Connection is simple with a single NMEA 2000 network connector. SonicHub2 Navico has also updated its network audio server and entertainment system with the all-new SonicHub2, which will be on display at the show. Available in Lowrance and Simrad

variations, this updated and enhanced audio server allows control over music selection, radio stations and even video through the manufacturer’s NSS evo2 and NSO evo2 multifunction displays. Serving as a direct replacement for earlier models, the SonicHub2 has internal Bluetooth streaming capability and will work with iOS and Android systems. It can also support Pandora Internet radio from a phone or tablet and is compatible with the WM-3 SiriusXM satellite radio/marine weather module. By accessing the information directly from your NSS evo2 or NSO evo2 display you can stream your favorite music from your phone’s playlist, tune into Pandora Radio or select a Sirius station without having to deal with a separate stereo. It even has dual USB inputs for charging or connecting other auxiliary inputs. The SonicHub2 can be installed remotely and is easy to hook into the system via NMEA 2000. Anyone with one of these multifunction displays needs to look into this innovative and flexible audio and entertainment module for a simple, feature-rich entertainment system solution. Poly-Planar BTAL-01 Navico isn’t the only company with new products on display at the show that can improve equipment you already own. Poly-Planar will exhibit its new BTAL-01, which allows Poly-Planar non-Bluetooth stereos (or other brands with auxiliary input) to stream music from any Bluetooth-capable device from as far away as 33 feet. This new Bluetooth AudioLink is compact and installs easily by connecting to 12 volts and plugging into the auxiliary input jacks on the back of the stereo. Just turn the stereo to the auxiliary setting and enjoy music from your phone or tablet. If you get a call while streaming, the ring tone will sound through the speakers; when you terminate the call, the music will return. It provides a simple and cost-effective alternative to replacing your existing unit. So, if you want to see the latest and greatest in marine electronics, or just want to update and improve the system you already own, take a trip to the Miami International Boat Show and see these items for yourself. ★

SAFETY FIRST by Helen Aitken
Know Before You Go Tips to make time spent on the water safer and more pleasant. he boating season is year-round in many areas of the U.S., while in other areas we wait for the icebergs to melt so we can safely get back out on the water. I’m fortunate enough (being in North Carolina) to go out about ten months of the year or longer if I make advanced preparations. Boats work hard while we play hard, and they need routine and long-term maintenance. Without maintaining the fuel lines, batteries, lights, electrical equipment and a dozen other things, a boat just becomes a storage box for nautical gear that sits in the driveway. For that reason, it behooves us all to keep up with winterizing, spring-cleaning and making daily checkups before going on the water. Here are some things to think about, and a few of my favorite tips, for a pleasant and safe outing.

Before the trip: > Update the first aid kit; check the flares and fire extinguisher. Where is the toolbox? > Examine all the PFDs and add plastic, pea-less whistles to each. Are they the right sizes? > Do you need Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs) or an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) for the boat? > Tell others about your trip. Designate a working VHF channel, like 72, to communicate with other boats, and leave channel 16 open for emergencies. > Have current charts on hand and check the Local Notice to Mariners (LNM) for U.S. Coast Guard District 9 Great Lakes (NAVCEN.USCG.GOV). > Fuel up with the best fuel. Do you know how many miles to the gallon you typically use? The U.S. Power Squadrons recommend using a third of the tank going out, a third coming back, and leaving a third of the tank as a precaution. > Check the weather, winds and tides, and wear appropriate clothing and shoes (NWS.NOAA.GOV). Will it be a bumpy ride? I create two duffle bags with things that always go on the boat. > The Wants bag: Hat, towels, waterproof camera, jacket, toys and other items for my guests. (Do I really need that DVD player?) > The Needs bag: VHF radio, chartplotter, flashlights, air horn, “rules of the road” booklet, medications like EpiPens, hand sanitizer, motion sickness tablets, emergency thermal

blanket packets, sunscreen, lip balm, insect repellent, garbage bags, binoculars and polarized sunglasses. Cell phones, car keys and wallet go in plastic zip bags. Unfortunately, I get seasick. In swells of 5 feet or higher, I want to die. I’ve tried many methods to prevent seasickness and asked everyone, from naval officers to commercial fishermen, for their remedies. Some people say to go boating on an empty stomach, while others say to eat a hardy but greaseless meal. They recommend over-the-counter drugs and even sucking on whole cloves. I’ve activated pressure points around my wrists and pressed on the cartilage in my ear: no luck, and yet I go boating. Through trial and error, a few things get me off the dock and back. I can eat toast before I leave, then a reduced-fat PB&J sandwich with baked chips or fruit and real ginger ale for lunch. Then, I sit close to the water’s surface, watching out toward the horizon. Ninety-five percent of the time this works for me. Before leaving the dock, ask your guests if they need something for their seasickness. It can make or break a boating experience. Don’t forget: > A cooler with enough water for each person, snacks and limited caffeinated or alcoholic beverages. > The fishing tackle, bait and box. During the trip: > Welcome aboard guests with a bottle of water, an area to sit and a PFD to wear. Review general rules of behavior while on board and give a briefing on emergency protocols with locations for the first aid kit, flares, horn and VHF use. > Provide a garbage bag to keep refuse from going overboard. > Assign jobs and roles to everyone and ask them to shift jobs coming back. Find simple tasks for the children; teaching boating responsibilities empowers non-boaters. After the trip: > Assess boat handling and determine if maintenance is required. > What should be thrown out, replaced or added to the “duffle bags”? > Decide how the boating experience can be improved upon. A little preparation goes a long way. Routine boat management and a checklist of things to bring on board (to make it more memorable) will make getting on the water less stressful. After all, boating with family and friends should be fun. ★

ith three staterooms, two heads and a wide variety of unique design elements and thoughtful amenities, Carver’s C50 Command Bridge might just be one of the most exciting launches in the company’s 62-year history. The C50 is a serious cruising yacht that’s built for big water like the Great Lakes. Its spacious bridge deck offers an integrated wet bar with grill and refrigerator/icemaker, and plenty of space for owners and guests to enjoy comfortable seating. In the main cockpit, fully opening glass doors and a flush threshold invite you into the spacious salon, with its large forward seating area perfect for entertaining. Large windows bathe the interior with natural light and ensure great views in every direction. An available lower helm station to starboard extends your cruising into the shoulder seasons, while the C50’s single-level, walk-around side deck is easily accessible from the wide-open cockpit, making it easy for couples or small families to handle. Just a few steps down from the salon, the C50’s stateroom deck features a forward guest stateroom with queen-size island

berth. An amidships stateroom to starboard offers comfortable twin berths, and a crew quarters is an option. Both the forward and amidships staterooms share the portside head, which includes a large shower stall. The aft owner’s suite utilizes an impressive full-beam layout, complete with a queen-size island berth and ensuite private head with shower. A full 6 feet, 6 inches of headroom throughout ensures owners and their guests enjoy live-aboard comfort. “The Carver C50 is a game changer for the industry,” says Rob Parmentier, president and CEO of Marquis Yachts, LLC. “The C50 captures everything owner’s love about the new Carver line of cruising yachts and then takes it to another level. More room. More comfort. More amenities. It’s a boat that lives much larger than its 50-foot length.” The C50 option list is truly impressive, including twin 600or 715-horsepower Cummins diesel engines, joystick control, bow and stern thrusters, air conditioning and several available generators. Also available is a hydraulic swim platform, washer/ dryer, 40-inch television and a day head aft starboard. ★

ne of the newer nameplates on the Great Lakes, Elandra Yachts, is set to open a lot of eyes this year with its exceptional Elandra 53, a sleek and elegant cruising yacht that’s made for summers on the water. With its 54-foot, 8-inch length overall and full 17-foot, 3-inch beam, the Elandra 53 provides an immense amount of cockpit deck space. This elegantly transitions with the salon, which opens up to combine a generous indoor/outdoor entertainment area on a single level. With its massive panoramic hull windows and open, flowing design, the elegantly appointed salon is bathed in natural light throughout. So is the forward guest cabin, which guests could easily mistake for the master stateroom, with its extensive floor space, queen bed, hullside windows, vanity, locker, TV and ensuite. As the owner, only you need to know just how exquisite the full-beam master suite really is, with its queen-sized bed, day lounge, apartment-style wardrobe and private ensuite with privacy toilet and double basin vanity.
“In considering the opportunity to represent Elandra Yachts in the Americas, I was particularly impressed, upon inspection of the 53 Sport Yacht, with the attention paid to a superyacht level of fit and finish, the designed-in utilization of space provided by the 17-foot-plus beam, and the offshore performance of the hull design,” says Mike Usina, president of Elandra Yacht Sales, The Americas. “The Elandra Yachts team is delivering a game changing product in this category.” Among the superyacht features is the transom garage, which opens to reveal a large tender with a roomy lazarette on either side. The amount of storage space for toys, rods and tackle, dive compressors and bottles, or even additional freezers, is impressive. Attention to detail throughout, including recessed LED lights on all the steps and the lounge on the foredeck, creates an air of opulence. One detail not to be overlooked is the yacht’s performance. Its wide beam helps the Elandra 53 achieve a top speed of almost 35 knots and a range of over 300 miles. It will also cruise comfortably at 13 knots, with a range approaching 500 miles. ★

uilding on the success of its earlier 350, 400 and 500 sport yachts introduced in 2011, Prestige Yachts’ 550 Fly offers a contemporary take on the classic motoryacht design. Just ahead to port sits the main dinette and lounge. Step below to find a full-width master suite with ensuite amidships, a VIP guest suite in the bow and a second suite with twin beds to port. Both guest suites share a spacious head to starboard. All accommodations benefit from oversized windows that let in plenty of light while preserving privacy. “All too often we see boats that have lots of great creature comforts but may not perform very well. Other times, we see boats that can run like the wind but are not very comfortable to live aboard,” observes Nick Harvey, president of Jeanneau America. “And there are still other boats out there that run well and are plenty comfortable,

but cost an arm and a leg so not a lot of them get sold. The Prestige 550 has proven itself to be one of those rare boats that encompasses all these essential elements into one great winning package.” With its twin Cummins 8.3L diesels turning Zeus pod drives, the Prestige 550 Fly offers a top speed of 30 knots. Drop back to 24 knots and the 550 Fly delivers an impressive 280-mile range. Joystick control and an available third helm station in the aft cockpit makes docking a breeze. “The 550 Prestige is the most popular model in the Prestige line, with 10 of them now cruising the Great Lakes,” says Spring Brook Marina’s Kyle Stenzel (815-357-8666; SPRINGBROOKMARINA.COM). “It affords owners an amazingly spacious layout incomparable to any other yacht in its class, while focusing on the most advanced resin infusion fiberglass technologies in the industry, making it the most structurally solid boat on the market. Versatility is the pontoon’s trump card, as exemplified by the Tahoe Vista Cruise. “The Tahoe Vista Cruise is an ideal boat for the Great Lakes, as the tritoon Waveglider package gives superior performance and handling on inland lakes, and also provides the ability to comfortably go out on the Great Lakes on most days,” says Matt Mrozinski, at Lake Michigan Yacht Sales (231-439-2675; ONEKAMAMARINE.COM). “Equally important is the thoughtfulness in design principles, including Flow Thru Ventilation on all seat bases to provide air flow and keep moisture to a minimum.” With twin front lounge seats and an L-shaped wrap-around rear lounge, the 22-foot Vista Cruise offers comfortable seating for 11 adults. The driver gets a pedestal-mount captain’s chair with fold-down arms, a nicely sculpted fiberglass helm with a wood grain dash panel and an attractive, chrome-on-wood grain steering wheel with tilt function. The Jensen MS2013BT
Bluetooth radio with USB and auxiliary input is standard, along with four high-power speakers. With its generous accommodations, three entry gates, expansive rear swim platform with aluminum boarding ladder, standard 25-quart cooler, changing room and standard 10-foot Bimini top, the Vista Cruise is clearly built for family weekends on the water. While the Tahoe Vista Cruise comes with a long list of standard features, it’s the option list that’s particularly interesting. Available upgrades include shore power (A/C input and outlet, charger and inverter), bow-mount electric trolling motor, mood lighting, smoked glass table with stainless cup holders and stemware holders, wakeboard tower, integrated refreshment center with an electric wine rack and even a water mist system. The 22-foot Vista Cruise also comes in a 20-foot model, as well as 24- and 26-foot models in the companion Elite series, which can seat up to 14 people. Try that with a pocket cruiser. With such comfortable amenities, large passenger capacity and attractive pricing, it’s little wonder pontoons like the Tahoe Vista Cruise continue to earn more followers every season. ★

y mother has a theory about quality in cars. The sticker price, the promotion, the bluster and bombast of the salesperson preaching the vehicle’s virtues — she says any buyer worth their salt will ignore the noise and focus instead on the telltale sign of quality: the doors. If they shut with the decisive whoomp of a refrigerator door, that weighty, near-soundless seal of resounding finality, a person could bet the manufacturer took care in all aspects of the car, from engine to ignition. But as I step past the chrome-trimmed walk-thru gate and down into the gleaming interior of Crownline’s new model bowrider, the 270 SS, it occurs to me that Mom’s theory — so far fail-safe for more than 20 years of car purchases — isn’t particularly helpful in the world of boats. Do I look to the distinctive double-hull band gelcoat design on this 27-foot, 3-inch beauty? The patented F.A.S.T. Tab hull that not only looks sexy but also minimizes drag and launches the boat to plane in a blink? Or do I meditate a minute on the maximum horsepower — a hair-a’flying 430 — this ride brings to the water? No, I won’t. I’ll be honest with you. Those features, all wonderful and fine, aren’t what captivate me about the Crownline 270 SS. While I appreciate the model’s undeniably sleek, sparkly body and the power that goes with it, what I truly love about this boat is the countless thoughtful touches that elevate it from a simply gorgeous boat to an amazing boating experience. Fact is, the 270 SS does double duty. It’s first and foremost designed for fast action: waterskiing, wakeboarding, tubing and firing out from dock to Dad’s “they’re biting right now!” fishing spot of the hour. But the boat offers much more than mere muscle, delivering features galore to those who want nothing more than to tool around the water all day in max-relax mode. Storage, galore Few things frustrate me as much as tripping over tangled piles of gear every time you move fore and aft. Which is why I’m close to squealing when I see the amount of storage on this Crownline. Uber deep storage areas with easy-to-clean, spray-in liners are standard beneath the entire J-shaped stern seating. Another massive amount of storage space awaits under the bow seating, plus an easily accessible locker for your anchor and lines. If, by chance, all that space doesn’t suffice for your family’s water toy collection, you’ll also find a super-sized ski locker. Besides being generously spacious, the locker sports a clever built-in drawer that neatly and easily hides away the boat’s optional cockpit table. None of the aforementioned storage spaces need to share space with your cooler; a 25-gallon cooler is easily accessible under the hinged seat for two, set behind the captain’s bucket seat. The out of sight, out of mind zen extends to the head, which is so well hidden in plain sight of the co-captain’s chair that I didn’t realize it was even there. Once opened, a quick swivel of the dash revealed a short but well-appointed hideaway for all essential business, thanks to its attractive cabinetry, sink, screened portlight window, toilet and a hand-held shower with excellent pressurized water system. Seating for all As a studied and certified master relaxer (read: lazy), I’m pretty picky about lounge-ability on boats. I sometimes find that sport boats — in their zeal for speed, strength and sexiness — come up short on

comfort. Not the 270 SS. In addition to the as-expected cushy bucket seats with flip-up bolsters for captain and co-captain, this boat treats passengers’ backs and bottoms right. Incidentally, thanks to a 102-inch beam and smart design, this 27-footer can comfortably fit up to 12 backs and bottoms. The aforementioned J-wrap cockpit seating features ergonomic seat backs. The plump bow seats feature a kind of hot tub seating in which the cushion curves to the shape of the sprawled-out body above. And my personal favorite, the transom’s electric sun lounge seat, which, with the touch of a button, angles the back up or down and ensures you’ve always got the best, most comfortable view of your skier, the sun, or (my preference) the inside of your eyelids. Fancy factor Finally, the fancy factor — those tiny touches of luxury and convenience that, sure, you can do without but are nice to have. The 270 SS delivers. Stainless steel trim and accents in spades, a moonrock steering wheel with polished spokes, a touchscreen Raymarine MFD with engine data display, sundeck shocks, lid shocks, a booming Jensen Marine stereo with six speakers throughout, a bonus 36-quart cooler and more are all standard. What isn’t standard? A highly recommended cockpit galley. It would replace the additional seating behind the captain’s chair but bring to the party a stainless steel sink and faucet, solid surface counter and finished storage space or cockpit fridge — in my estimation, a worthwhile trade. While I can’t rightly judge a boat based on Mom’s theory, I can safely say that, behind the wheel, the 270 SS feels and rides like quality should: quick to plane, stable in its turns and smooth as my most nervous passenger, Mom, would require. That being said, my own bluster and bombast aside, the 270 SS is likely to meet the expectations of any crew with multiple needs. Sleek, with enough power for skis and boards, and enough luxury for living large with the party crew or lounging with a novel and bobber, this bowrider, I’d say, lacks nothing except maybe a door. But truth be told, even if it had one, I’d get in and shut it happily behind me — no matter how it sounded. ★
Bring the Party It’s often said that good things come in small packages, and the 225 SS is a testament to that. A feisty 22-foot, 3-inch fireplug with 102-inch beam, this new model in the Crownline lineup is a super-sport Crownline machine with mega party appeal. Expansive seating 225 SS comes courtesy of an L-shaped cockpit with lots of Specifications legroom (plus filler seat at the side walk-thru), bench and bow seating, aft-facing sundeck lounge seat LOA: 22'3" with adjustable back and a passenger perch that flips Beam: 8'6" forward and back for spotting or chilling. Draft (up): 24.5" What really amps up the 225 SS experience is its Weight (dry): Jensen Marine Audio system and the outstanding sound 4,690 lbs. it pumps through its SIX speakers — and, quite frankly, Fuel Capacity: 43 gals into your bones. Though dancing is harder in the water, Max Power: 350 hp it’s nearly impossible to avoid, thanks to a social swim Base Price: Contact dealer transom that features two crankin’ speakers, both of which can be upgraded to Wet Sounds speakers. istory is a lovely destination for the mind to wander. Despite my best attempts to blow up the 11th grade chemistry lab, I didn’t realize that we have the French to thank for the Periodic Table. Nor that the French chemist Antoine Lavoisier perfected the Law of Conservation of Mass, widely used in many fields, including chemistry, mechanics and fluid dynamics. I am a bit too familiar with France’s true contribution to society, Dom Pérignon. And after a day aboard France’s latest invention, I’m impressed with how all three of the above-mentioned historical facts are inspiration for Beneteau’s newest sport cruiser, the Gran Turismo 40. Created by the talented Nuvolari and Lenard duo, the GT40 offers elegant lines, accentuated by a one of a kind hardtop and sunroof that may be the pièce de résistance.
“C’est en forgeant qu’on devient forgeron” — Practice makes perfect
Replacing the GT38, Beneteau’s U.S. sales manager, Justin Joyner, readily admits that the GT40 is all about “Americanizing the boat.” “Wider doorways, a larger head, more comfortable seating, air conditioning at the helm,” Joyner says, were all improvements gleaned from customer feedback. The new hull, based on Beneteau’s patented Air Step design, reduces fuel consumption, softens the ride and optimizes turning capability. Powered by twin Volvo D6 IPS 600 stern drives, Lakeland Boating’s publisher, Bing O’Meara, clocked speeds of more than 35 knots during a winter Florida test drive. Joystick control was sensational in the marina, while the vessel had quick acceleration, even when loaded with fuel and several passengers. Understanding the importance of a lingering Great Lakes twilight that naturally leads to hosting a docktail party on your boat, Beneteau set out to redefine a seating arrangement unlike any 40-foot cruiser. The main lounge begins directly

behind the split-access helm seating, sweeping along starboard and across the transom. Finished in a pleasing beige and cream colored, diamond-pattern vinyl, cushions and matching back rests have just enough material to offer support without lulling you to sleep. The real trick was adding a narrower seat portside without impeding the flow of traffic to the salon below. End result — a lesson in fluid dynamics — an extremely natural setting where everyone can easily make eye contact without feeling like you’re watching a tennis match. A center cockpit table on a height-adjustable pedestal is ideal for serving snacks, game night or meals cooked fresh on the Kenyon grill, which, along with a sink, is part of the gourmet island that makes up the transom and is adjoined to the swim platform. This feature is rapidly becoming a design standard in the 35- to 50-foot boat category. The grill is permanently flush-mounted and when not in use is hidden by a single piece fiberglass cover accessed by a gas strut lift support. That swim platform, by the way, can be lowered right to sea level, which makes getting in and out of the water easier for less nimble passengers and your water loving dog. Recessed into the portside and adjacent to the bench seat is the Isotherm refrigerator/freezer and cabinet with cutouts for bottles, wine glasses or entertainment storage needs.
“Il faut le voir pour le croire” – Seeing is believing
Helm seating is inspired. Rather than a long bench seat that makes swapping skippers for quick trips to the head reminiscent of a pas de deux, a split design allows easy access on both sides. Center placement of the helm provides a balanced view for the skipper forward and aft, side to side. With ample room for your partner, sharing navigation via the single screen Simrad display or VHF duties is ergonomically well laid out. Only the joystick seemed a bit of a stretch, or is it that my arms aren’t long enough? I tend to stand while docking anyway, so perhaps it’s just a preference. The helm wheel reminds me of the charm of a French patisserie. Trimmed in tan and pearl stitched leather, this elegance is a handsome dessert for the eye and pleasing to the touch while underway. Part of the seduction of the Gran Turismo 40 is the sensation of an open craft. The GT40 hardtop can be pushed back, bringing sun and air into the cockpit. Removable side glazing frees up the cockpit completely, adding to the spaciousness. An ingenious sliding entrance to the cabin takes full advantage of daylight to illuminate the salon, thanks to an overhead skylight. Coupled with an inviting seating layout and Alpi Walnut interior finish, well placed mirrors give the lower deck an unusual feeling of space. A minimalistic galley — consisting of two-burner glass cook top, Waeco refrigerator/freezer, microwave and slide out shelves — only increases the notion that a longer cruise is very enticing. Two substantial cabins seal the deal. The forward master has your typical queen-size, center pedestal bed with storage below, two storage lockers and an optional flat screen TV. The aft stateroom, which is also secured by a privacy door, sports twin beds that, with filler cushions, become a beam-to-beam bed. Between both staterooms is a shower/head combo with sink and storage. Beneteau’s GT40 is not only an aquatic treasure, its entire design and competitive price helps rationalize the buying decision. You won’t even need a sea trial; simply bring along another couple to the boat show, play musical chairs in the cockpit and start dreaming about this summer’s escape. ★

doesn’t matter when it comes to boating — you can’t measure fun. For those unwilling to shell out a small fortune and their firstborn child for a customized luxury yacht, there’s a great selection of 25-foot and under small boats out there capable of fulfilling all your boating needs. ■ For those looking for an adrenaline rush, there are ski-boats perfectly equipped for skiers, wake boarders, wakesurfers and tubers alike. Pontoon boats provide the perfect playground for families and kids. Bowriders and deck boats are ideal both for exploring the Great Lakes, or spending the whole day tied up at the dock grilling. These days, most small boats also come with a number of customizations — including color options, sound systems, engine power — just in case you don’t fit one particular boater-mold. ■ Although small boats are usually easy enough to handle with just one or two people, they’re also the perfect excuse to socialize. Close quarters make small boats the ultimate hangout destination for friends, and their maneuverability means it’s easy to visit boat neighbors at other docks. With the ability to quickly trailer these boats, all of the Great Lakes destinations are within reach, even inland lakes. ■ Really, the worst part of buying a small boat might be trying to decide which one to chose. To make things easier, we’ve rounded up some of our favorite 25-foot and under boats.

he 40-plus islands that form OUR BVI ROUTE: the British Virgin Islands The Dogs (BVI) are lovingly referred to as “nature’s Bitter End little secrets.” These dazzling islands, Cane Garden Jost rocks and cays, settled in the crystal Bay Van Devil’s Bay Road Town clear Caribbean water, offer the perfect Dyke (The Baths) cruising ground for experienced and Frenchman’s Cay Cooper Island amateur boaters alike. The islands beg Salt to be explored, and the warm, calm Island The waters — protected by the “bath-like” Indians Norman Island formation of the islands — boast some of the greatest snorkeling in the world. So, what better way to traverse each and every island than by chartering a brand-new Moorings 514PC power catamaran? This weeklong retreat was unlike any I’ve ever experienced and afforded my family and I a memorable vacation to treasure. With consistent temperatures (unheard of in the Great Lakes), spectacular wildlife, hidden coves and plenty of anchorages, you can bet we were never bored. DAY 1: CHICAGO TO ROAD TOWN, TORTOLA
As all good vacations begin, my husband Matt and I were up before the sun, eager to leave Chicago for more temperate weather. After a flight to San Juan, Puerto Rico, we stepped aboard the smallest plane I’ve ever laid eyes on: a Cessna 402. With our knees against the pilot’s seat, Matt and I took in moonlit views of the BVI from hundreds of feet above as we headed toward Tortola, the largest of the islands. Our brief, 30-minute taxi drive from the Beef Island Airport led us through quaint villages, with homes tucked into the hillside and cows strolling the streets as though they were coming back from the store, carefully following the traffic patterns. When we arrived at The Moorings base in the BVI capital, Road Town, the friendly receptionist led us to the Moorings 514PC Sail Away. This handsome, 51-foot power catamaran was custom-designed for The Moorings by yacht builders Robertson and Caine, and was ours for the week. Lit up by its azure underwater lights, Sail Away was a sight to be seen with its pronounced flybridge (complete with state-of-the-art electronics), spacious, outdoor aft cockpit and hydraulic swim platform. The weather in Tortola at 9 p.m. in late November is just what the doctor prescribed: Not too hot, not too cold and with a perfect breeze. We stopped by Charlie’s Bar and Grill on base for a drink before checking out our cabin on board. Though we were lucky enough

that everyone could have their own cabin, the dining table in the salon can be converted into a large bed if Copyright we had needed more sleeping space. Each of the four cabins is © Free Vector Maps.com outfitted with queen berth and ensuite head. The provisioning had already been completed by The Moorings. This convenient amenity provided us with enough meals to cook onboard, yet allowed us to get onshore and explore some local cuisine. Split between the seven of us, it was well worth the money. DAY 2: ROAD TOWN TO NORMAN ISLAND
The first full day of our vacation just happened to be my birthday, and what a joyous birthday it was! The morning was spent exploring the base (5) while we waited for the rest of my family to fly in — including my sister, Amy; parents Brenda and Greg; Uncle Ed; and Aunt Kathy. Matt and I equipped the boat with Wi-Fi from The Moorings onsite partner, Renport, treated ourselves to a latte at Ginny’s Coffee Shop and relaxed on the sunpad of Sail Away (where I unabashedly got sunburned after just a few minutes, my skin unaccustomed to the Caribbean rays). Upon the arrival of the rest of the group, we did an onboard briefing with The Moorings’ Captain Ryan (1), who taught my dad (aka Captain Greg) how to handle

the boat and moor properly. He also showed us where safety equipment was located before handing the ship over the Capt. Greg. It helped make everyone feel more confident while cruising (2). We fueled up, got a Stand-Up Paddleboard (SUP) and a few inflatables, and we were off! Our first destination: The Bight (3), a gorgeous cove off the northwestern tip of Norman Island, known by locals as “Treasure Island” for its bountiful stories of buried pirate treasure. Lush hilltops and crystal clear waters sheath this island. It’s the rumored former residence of Captain Blackbeard and reportedly the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel, “Treasure Island.” We were lucky to find a mooring ball in this busy harbor. After Capt. Ryan’s thorough tutorial, deckhands Ed and Matt picked up the ball in one attempt. Operating such a large boat may seem intimidating, but mooring balls ease the pressure — you never have to worry about pulling into port (unless you need water or fuel). I relished the view (7) before pulling out the SUP (4) and heading to the rocky shore, which was littered with dried coral and foreign stones. Though I didn’t find a Petoskey stone, I did discover other gorgeous fossilized rocks. After some practicing, Matt finally perfected his cannonball form, a sign that it was finally time to head ashore. We spent a lovely evening at the Pirates Bight Beach Bar and Grill (14). This open-aired restaurant offered great happy hour cocktails, an unobstructed view of the sunset (8), amazing food (6) and even better live music. Everyone got a little action in on the dance floor and then had to play “Where’s Waldo” with our dinghy, as there were dozens of them at the docks. This was our first night spent on the boat in open water, and we quickly realized that our underwater lights attracted some mighty large fish. We don’t have fish like these in the Great Lakes. We later discovered that the fish, which appeared to be miniature sharks, were in fact harmless Tarpon. The flybridge was the perfect location for a game of Uno, as we watched the moon rise above the hills, and the stars peek through the overcast sky (11). This was my kind of night. The helm bench is convertible, so we flipped it around to increase the seating space, which, when underway, means the skipper can socialize. In the spirit of adventure, my sister attempted to sleep on the flybridge, which was short-lived due to early morning rain. DAY 3: SALT ISLAND TO COOPER ISLAND
14
56
The weather was a bit suspect as we started the engines around 6:30 a.m. and headed into open water. Leaving the harbor, we passed by Steve Job’s spectacular Venus, a sprawling 260-foot megayacht that looks like it was designed for James Bond. We didn’t last long in the rough chop and instead opted for the protected coves of Peter Island. This private island — ironically owned by a family from my hometown of Grand Rapids, Michigan — is dotted with sandy beaches and palm trees. We motored east past the uninhabited Dead Chest Island towards our first destination of the day: Lee Bay off Salt Island. Despite the rain still sprinkling away, we put on goggles and did a bit of snorkeling in this protected cove. Sail Away sat on top of the famed RMS Rhone shipwreck (12). In the distance we spotted the salt ponds, which the island is named after. We outraced the rain to a sunny spot in the impressive Manchineel Bay off Cooper Island. We lucked out with timing (as this is a busy spot) and grabbed a mooring at the northernmost point of the bay, next to Quart-A-Nancy Point. Our boat sat about 30 feet offshore and 20 feet deep in breathtaking water that was a dozen shades of blue (10).

Itching to explore, a few of us took the dinghy to check out the little “village” of the Cooper Island Beach Club. Recently renovated in 2009 by the Harris family, the beach club features a restaurant and bar deck, boutique, and gourmet coffee shop. We were told they had excellent happy hour specials, so we marked our busy schedules to come back at 4 p.m. Matt and I spent the next few hours snorkeling along the beach front. This was our introduction to all the colors the Caribbean has to offer — blushing star coral, ivory tube coral, a banded bellyfish and even a jellyfish. Later on while I took a quick siesta, Amy roamed the shoreline and discovered a treasure chest. Inside the chest, amongst other treasures, there was a notebook with dozens of handwritten accounts of families adventures while vacationing in the islands (9). We were invited to write our own story and add to the chest. We followed through with our promise and arrived back onshore for happy hour drinks. The bartender introduced us to the tasty rum-infused “painkiller” — a BVI tradition that reportedly got its start at Jost Van Dyke’s Soggy Dollar Bar. Back on board, the electric grill in the flybridge proved handy in grilling steaks and veggie burgers as we enjoyed our meal in the outdoor aft cockpit. Day 4: The BaThs To BiTTer enD, Virgin gorDa
During another early morning being tossed around the cabin as Capt. Greg (13) tried to get a head start, I made my way up to the flybridge sunpad and watched the squalls in the distance with a fresh cup of coffee. We cruised east toward Virgin Gorda as we passed Ginger Island, Round Rock (aptly named) and Fallen Jerusalem. Capt. Greg made sure to never cruise too fast — we wanted to soak up every bit of the BVI that we passed along the way. Once at Virgin Gorda, we were greeted by a shoreline adorned with the “Flintstones” rocks (18). We had arrived at the Baths and it was a simply stunning sight. This collection of slowly eroded boulders lines the sapphire shoreline like a Caribbean version of Stonehenge. Deckhands Ed and Matt helped us grab a mooring at the southern tip of Virgin Gorda in Spring Bay while my mom and aunt made breakfast. Meanwhile, Amy jumped in to cool off and had the (quite unpleasant) misfortune of being greeted by jellyfish. The only way to enter the Baths is to swim ashore; take only what you don’t mind getting wet. With noodles in hand, we swam to the entrance of this natural wonder. “Get ready to crawl,” a couple warned us, as they exited the caves. With aqua-socks on, we were ready for this adventure. The prophetic couple was right — we had
to crouch, bend sideways and walk the plank up narrow staircases and rocks. But the hidden pools within the rocks, combined with the hints of sunshine peaking through, were well worth the effort. The next few hours were spent snorkeling the prismatic shallow waters, jumping off the monstrous boulders (17) and exploring the nooks and crannies of the caves. While my family headed for the exit, Matt and I ventured to Devil’s Bay at the southernmost tip. This beach is made for a postcard, with pure sand beaches and bright blue waters (16). We looked like flopping fish as we flung ourselves back into the dinghy. Our adventure wasn’t over for the day, so we took off for the northern tip of Virgin Gorda, known as Gorda Sound (or North Sound). We settled in the elite bay of Bitter End (as it’s the easternmost edge of the BVI, alas the “bitter end”). Once ashore, we delved into the nautical village where we did a little shopping and toured the sailing school at Bitter End Yacht Club (15). Dinner was served at the Crawl Pub, where I dined on tuna pizza (a first) and painkillers. Day 5: The Dogs To Cane garDen Bay

We enjoyed a perfectly sunny morning in the cove overlooking the megayachts at the Yacht Club Costa Smerelda (YCCS). On to our next adventure, we cruised through the channel to scope out Necker’s Island — Richard Branson’s oasis. Sail Away headed west towards a cluster of islands known as The Dog, so we could do a bit of snorkeling in the famed reefs. It was a bit choppier in open sea, but the sun was shining and we enjoyed breakfast in the cove at Great Dog — with George Dog to our north and West Dog to our west. I’m still unsure as to why they’re called The Dogs, but boy, are they gorgeous. Through a narrow passage between Beef Island and Great Camanoe Island, we waved hello to the airport and sailed past the bright blue waters at Marina Cay. Capt. Greg was ready to test this Moorings 514PC and went wide open past Guana Island, where we topped out at 18 knots. While the engines powered us smoothly at full throttle, we preferred the cruising speed. Our two-hour cruise concluded upon our arrival at Cane Garden Bay, one of the more beautiful anchorages in the BVI. With

lush hillsides speckled with kaleidoscopic homes, the sounds of roosters emanating from the mountains and sandy white beaches dotted with palm trees (19), this was my favorite landscape thus far. A quick 3-mile trip north to Jost Van Dyke marked the start of our day. We circumnavigated the island — passing Sandy Spit, Green Cay, Little Jost Van Dyke and Sandy Cay — and grabbed a mooring in Great Harbor for a quick pit stop. We headed for dry land to check out the world famous Foxy’s (24) (known for its wild beach parties) and satisfy our sweet tooth at Christine’s Bakery. Sounds of calypso music from the local shops followed us as we walked through the streets. Next, we motored towards the western edge of Tortola, unsure of what our next stop would be. Spontaneously, we ended up at Soper’s Hole at West End, Tortola — a fantastic location that was not included on any of our itinerary guides. When a quick rainstorm passed, we sat under the view of a sublime double rainbow (23). I guess we didn’t wait long enough to head to the shores of Frenchman’s Cay; our clothing was drenched from our dinghy ride, but we stopped into the quaint and colorful boutiques to dry off (25). Matt and I ventured off to taste-test cocktails at Scaramouche Italian Restaurant. He ordered the classic Old Fashioned, while I opted for the spicier Jalapeño Tequila with cucumbers. The teal and yellow building housing Pusser’s Landing was our next stop for dinner. Though we were all uncomfortably full from our delicious meals, no dinner is complete without a bite of gelato at L’Amore Gelato Caramella Caffe. DAY 7: FRENCHMAN’S CAY, THE INDIANS AND NORMAN ISLAND
The bittersweet ending to our trip was upon us, and we savored every minute of it. Dressed and ready to go first thing in the morning, we continued our exploration of Frenchman’s Cay. Breakfast was served at D’Best Cup (20), offering up a savory Irish cream latte. Afterwards, the ladies enjoyed a relaxing massage at Serenity Spa; life doesn’t get much better than this. Snorkeling was on my mind, so we cruised south to the Indians, trademarked by its four red rocks jutting out from the blue Caribbean waters off the coast of Norman Island (22). The rolling waves provided the perfect opportunity to perch ourselves on the port and starboard bow seats and pretend that we were on a roller coaster (despite the 514PC pushing through the waves gracefully, delivering almost zero impact). The shallow waters surrounding the Indians provided some of the most spectacular snorkeling in the BVI. I had a front row seat to the lives of blue angelfish, skinny trumpetfish and plenty of the beautiful (yet dangerous) fire coral (21). Our trip ended full circle at Norman Island — the first and last waypoint (27). We had a few things left on our bucket list to check off: create our very own homemade painkiller (garnished with freshly shaved nutmeg); dinghy over to the famous “Willy T” pirate ship bar (26); enjoy another swim in the salty water; eat one last meal at our favorite restaurant, Pirates Bight; and, most importantly, bury our treasure on “Treasure Island.” Want a clue? It’s hidden amongst nature’s little secrets, tucked away near a panoramic view of the bay. You’ll have to take a trip aboard a Moorings charter in the British Virgin Islands to find this treasure for yourself. ★

For contemporary arts and Frank Lloyd Wright architecture, Danish kringles and festivals, drop anchor in the Lake Michigan harbor town of Racine, Wisconsin. B Y J O D I E J A C O B S

f you’ve cruised Lake Michigan’s western shoreline, you have likely passed the 11-story Wind Point Lighthouse that sticks out at the north end of Racine. But did you know that there’s also a 15-story tower designed by famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright nearby? The Wright structure isn’t Racine’s only gem. A short amble into downtown from the shoreline is one of the country’s largest and most notable contemporary glass, ceramics, works-on-paper and WPA prints collection, all housed at the Racine Art Museum.
Racine, the fifth largest city in Wisconsin centrally located between Chicago and Milwaukee, has always been a hub of innovation. The city is the hometown to many industries, including Horlick’s Malted Milk, Little Golden Books and SC Johnson, whose headquarters were designed in 1936 by Wright. But no matter what type of food or activity peaks your interest, you must try a kringle. Racine is nicknamed America’s Kringle Capital. The kringle, a traditional Danish oval pastry, typically has a delicious fruit or pecan filling.

RACINE ART MUSEUM
ON THE WATER: RELAX, SWIM, FISH AND REPEAT
The sighting of the Wind Point Lighthouse is your indication to pull into Racine’s gorgeous Reefpoint Marina and relax awhile. Marina manager Carrie VanDera is waiting to cater to your boating and vacation needs. “We operate the marina like a five-star resort,” says VanDera. “We want people to relax and enjoy themselves. There’s a pool here, a hot tub, an outdoor restaurant with music and we have boat-side delivery service. We can bring you a six-pack of beer or whatever. People come here to be on vacation.” The 921-slip, full-service marina features a new ship’s store, newly remodeled restroom and shower facilities, and boaters lounge. In addition, a marina shuttle takes visitors (for a small fee) to area attractions, including the lighthouse, SC Johnson headquarters (for an architectural tour) and Danish bakeries. But the ship’s store also carries Racine’s famous Danish kringles and can deliver one boat-side. During the height of the boating season, the best plan of action is to reserve a transient slip ahead of your visit to Racine. However, the marina will take last minute boaters, particularly if they hit bad weather. Transient boaters can notify the marina on Channel 9, or call 262-633-7171. When you’re ready for a refreshing dip in the lake, take advantage of the 50-acre North Beach, just a short dinghy ride north of the marina. In 2012, USA Today listed it as a Top 51 American Beach and in 2010, Midwest Living named it a top city beach. Listen up if you’re an angler; the world’s record 41-pound, 8-ounce brown trout was caught in Racine waters during the town’s week-long SalmonA-Rama tournament. So, if you’re interested in catching trout (rainbow, lake or brown) or salmon (Coho and Chinook), make arrangements at the marina to hop aboard one of the local charter fishing boats.

“We have a very knowledgeable charter fleet,” says fishing captain Bill Harris, head of the Fishing Charters of Racine Association. “Racine is prime fishing. We have reefs off Wind Point, a reef off Racine and (underwater) hills off Racine. These are the places where the fish hang out.” Another advantage of taking a Racine fishing charter is the equipment and service that’s provided — the charters have ice and will clean the fish, so clients leave with fillets ready to cook that are fresh and packed in ice.
IN TOWN: BROWSE AND TOUR
The notable contemporary arts collection is an easy walk from the marina up Fourth Street to the Racine Art Museum, known locally as RAM. With thousands of works in the collection, items range from fibers and metals to glass, ceramics and wood. Under the experienced eye of executive director/curator Bruce W. Pepich, exhibits are well organized in several areas of the museum. What visitors may see at any given time at RAM are works by Dale Chihuly, Wendell Castle, Joel Philip Myers and Toshiko Takaezu. Tip: the gift shop is a great place to find unique, artistic items. The museum — which first began in 1941 as the Charles A. Wustum Museum of Fine Arts on the 13-acre Wustum property (also worth a visit) — opened its downtown facility as RAM in 2003. The original campus is about two miles from RAM’s downtown location and holds fine art and craft exhibitions, including Wisconsin artists’ photography and watercolor shows. “The collections grew too large,” Pepich says. “When Karen Johnson Boyd gave us a major donation of baskets, ceramics and jewelry in 1992 it brought national attention to our collection so we began to attract other donations and visitors in the 1990s. We now get visitors from all over.”

The next downtown stop is the Heritage Museum, a few blocks south of RAM on Main, at Seventh Street. This museum is “dedicated to preserving the material culture and telling the special stories of the people of Racine County.” On a recent visit, the museum featured an exhibit called Waterways, which explored Racine’s early history as a thriving Great Lakes commercial port, and Underground Railroad, featuring stories of Racine County during and after the Civil War. Another exhibit displayed items relating to Danish settlements in the area from mid to late 1880s, when Wisconsin was attracting immigrants from the Scandinavian countries. “They came for jobs. They were a diverse, hardworking people,” says Heritage Museum executive director Christopher R. Paulson. Just north of the marina, the 32-acre Racine Zoo is home to some of the world’s most endangered species. The Zoo now features more than

LIGHTHOUSE, WRIGHT TOWER, KRINGLES, OH MY
You might feel as though you are entering Oz’s Emerald Kingdom when visiting the SC Johnson campus — SC Johnson’s 15-story Research Tower designed by Frank Lloyd Wright is that awe-inspiring. Instead of walking a yellow brick road, if you’re moored in Racine, take the marina’s shuttle to the campus. Thousands of visitors come to Racine just to see the Research Tower and Administration Building, also designed by Wright, so tour openings fill up ahead of time. Visit the company’s website (SCJOHNSON.COM) and book a free tour before you arrive. The Landmarks Tour explores the Wright-designed buildings: the Administration Building that opened in 1939 and the Research Tower, opened in 1950. The tour also visits Fortaleza Hall, designed by London-based Lord Norman Foster and his firm, Foster + Partners, which opened in 2010. A quote by H. F. Johnson Jr. on the SC Johnson website explains the Wright relationship: “Anybody can build a typical building. I wanted to build the best office building in the world, and the only way to do that was to get the greatest architect in the world.” Expect to be awed. The Administration Building, considered among the top 25 buildings of the 20th century, has dendriform (tree-like) columns, 43 miles of Pyrex glass tubing and “bird cage-style circular elevators.” The Research Tower, standing 153 feet tall, is built on a cantilever principle with its 15 floors supported by a core that goes 54 feet into the ground. Fortaleza Hall is just as amazing. A Gold Certified LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) building that reflects Johnson’s Brazilian expeditions, it is 60,000 square feet with a vertical garden, a 19,200-piece mosaic topography map of the Western Hemisphere that follows Sam Johnson’s journey from Racine to Brazil, an 8,000-square-foot mural of a Brazilian palm forest, based on photos by H. F. Johnson Jr., a waterfall and a reflecting pool. The other tower to see, the Wind Point Lighthouse, rises 111 feet. The view is worth the climb of 144 steps. Stop in at its museum in the Fog Horn Building to learn about the lighthouse and the keepers’ jobs. Wind Point is among the tallest and oldest lighthouses on Lake Michigan

REEFPOINT BREW HOUSE
IVANHOE WIND POINT LIGHTHOUSE still in operation. Built in 1880, it still has a Fresnel lens. The original lens can be seen in the old Coast Guard Keepers quarters. You work up an appetite climbing those stairs, so it’s OK to reward yourself with a kringle and bring some back to the boat. With reportedly one of the largest North American settlements of Danes (outside of Greenland), Racine is known for its Danish pastries: the kringle. The recipe on the Food Network from O&H Danish Bakery suggests that more than 75 hours go into making the kringle and the traditional kringle has 32 layers. Racine’s Danish bakeries ship their kringles across the U.S. and abroad. Five locally owned bakeries produce kringles: Bendtsen’s Bakery, Larsen’s Bakery, Lehmann’s Bakery, O&H Danish Bakery and Racine Danish Kringle. But be sure to visit O&H’s new location on Washington Avenue. Founded by Christian Olesen and Harvey Holtz in 1949, the bakery is still run by the Olesen family. Like the other Danish bakeries, their kringle is a terrific treat, but their store’s Danish ambiance sets them apart. From the checkout counter shaped like a Viking ship, to the plaques and large brass kringle topped with a royal crown, the bakery’s newest location is a fun place to shop and stay awhile. Son-in-law Matt Horton explains the ambiance: “The store shows the Danish heritage in wood, metal and stone. They are symbols of the Danish spirit of adventure. The Danes were also merchants and tradesmen.” Traveling a short distance west, on Washington Avenue, another must-stop is Lighthouse Gallery and Gifts. This unique shop boasts a large selection of lighthouse and nautical gifts and decorations. They also have the ability to blend their printing expertise with that of fine photography, transforming your photos into cherished keepsakes to remember your trip.

ome is where the heart is — where the family gathers in the kitchen; where kids build sandcastles with their cousins; where lifelong memories are formed. And at this stunning West Michigan home, family time is highly encouraged. “The biggest draw to this home is that you have a beautiful, quiet location where you have inland lake activities on Spring Lake, you’re exposed to Lake Michigan and you can visit a really nice town,” the homeowner says. “It’s a nice gathering place.” A private, tree-lined driveway leads to this 5,700-squarefoot, 5-bedroom, 3-bathroom home. Renovated within the last five years, the interior walls were torn down to create an airy, seamless living space, and the kitchen and bathrooms were updated. The living room boasts high, wood-beamed ceiling, open to the second floor lofted office, and the adjacent dining room and kitchen. Standing tall in the heart of the room is the cozy fireplace with built-in bookcases, opposite the impressive wall of windows that frame the lake. The kitchen features Corian countertops, rich wood cabinets and a large island for the family to congregate. Both the living

room and sitting room are located off the large walkout patio. Five spacious bedrooms allow for the family and friends (plus some) to spend an extended weekend at this waterfront retreat. The main floor master offers water views, a large spa bath and walk-in closet with built-ins. “The bedrooms are all very big,” the homeowner says. “We had king beds, bunk beds and a crib all in one room and there was still room to move around.” But the real showstopper at this home is the outdoor space. A well-manicured lawn, volleyball court for a quick summer tournament, small sandy beach for the kids to play in, and beautiful hardscape make up the lakefront haven. Down a handful of steps to the sizable dock, you’ll have plenty of space for large boats. The home is positioned on a bayou, known as Jerusalem Bayou, which is deep and well protected from winds and storms. A hydraulic lift at the end of the dock is a convenient feature for smaller boats. “People need to invest time into family, and this home presents a tremendous possibility to do so,” the homeowner says. ★

CLASSIC CRAFTS by Kate Bush
Karri Me Back
When Karri and I were married, my father let us take his circa-1966 Chris-Craft Corsair on our honeymoon. We cruised the waters of northern Michigan, including the Mullett and Burt Lake chain, Mackinac Island, Beaver Island and Lake Charlevoix. Karri had never boated before, but I managed to convince her it was a great family activity. We soon purchased our first of several boats and have cruised extensively ever since. The Corsair, however, has always been a favorite, so much so that we went looking for one to purchase. Three years ago, we found this 1968 Chris-Craft in Vermont and brought it home to restore and relive the special memories from years ago. Ironically, the previous owners were married aboard this boat. Having such a special affection for the Corsair, we had to name her Karri Me Back. ADD YOUR BOAT
