Back to Business L
ast year, 2013, was a year the boat business got back to business. The boatbuilders have returned strong with a host of new models, and the electronics folks are back developing more sophisticated products than ever before. It was announced that Oxford Dictionary’s “Word of the Year” for 2013 is “Selfie,” which refers to a photo one takes of oneself with a smartphone, etc. and posts on social media websites. In the same vein of Oxford, the marine industry’s word/phrase of the year is “Glass Helm/Cockpit.” Basically, this refers to monitors at the helm station of a vessel (often touch screen) where the results of sophisticated onboard systems are collected and displayed for the captain. Pretty amazing when you think about how far we’ve come from the early days of paper charts and a prayer. Speaking of electronic innovations, in this issue Lakeland Boating contributor Elizabeth Altick interviews Louis Miller of Mercury Marine (page 19). Miller explains how we can benefit from the revolution of joystick technology.

Skye’s the Limit My name is Skye. I’m the new Border Collie around Southwest Florida Yachts (SWFY) in Cape Coral, Florida. My assignment is to be the office and security dog for the company’s charter fleet. I also serve as the personal house pet and boat dog for my new parents, Barb and Vic Hansen, owners of SWFY. Barb, my new mom, asked me to write this so I could tell you my story. I’m not a puppy. I’m already five and a half. The Hansens adopted me just a few months ago after their beloved Star passed away at the age of 16. They were very sad. One day Aunt Theresa at the animal clinic called them and told them she had a dog — that was me — who needed a home and some attention. They decided to give me a try. I’ve come to understand that I’ve got four big feet to fill. Star the wonder dog was Barb and Vic’s heart and joy. She was a Border Collie, too, which endowed her with exceptional skills. Mom told me that Star was the official greeter at SWFY. Her job was to welcome all, smile and to lie down and be quiet when they had visitors. I hear ya, Mom. The Hansens took me to Marinatown, where the fleet boats are headquartered. Mom told me Star was good at patrolling the docks at the marina, providing security of a sort and shooing away birds from the boats. Heck, I can do that. When I was at the pound I overheard somebody say that the local airport was
spending $5,000 to train a Border Collie like me to chase birds off the runway. For free dog food and medical care I can shoo birds from boats, no prob. It’s in my DNA. Please understand I have nothing against birds. It’s just that they need to know there’s a place for everything, and a boat isn’t one of them. I went on a short weekend cruise with Mom and Dad recently, and oh boy did I learn that lesson! I haven’t been on any extended cruises, but I’m really looking forward to them. They told me Star liked to pace around the boat and when a dolphin surfaced, she’d give a shout out to the passengers to let them know the show had started. Mom told me the more Star ran around the deck barking at the dolphins, the more they would perform. I could do that. I’m good to go. I could even write a letter to the editor now and then. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Office of Coast Survey, which creates and maintains the nation’s suite of more than a thousand nautical charts of U.S. Coastal Waters, announced that beginning April 13, the federal government will no longer print traditional lithographic (paper) charts. It will, however, continue to provide other forms of nautical charts, including Print On Demand (POD) charts and versions for electronic systems. Since 1862, lithographic nautical charts have been printed by the U.S. government and sold to public vendors. The decision to stop producing them is based on several factors, including declining demand, increased use of digital and electronic charts and federal budget constraints. NOAA will continue to create and maintain POD charts,

A new Great Lakes maritime history museum is currently under construction in northwest Ohio and is slated to open in April, according to a report in The Daily Journal online, dailyjournal.net.
The report maintains most of the exhibits at the National Museum of the Great Lakes in Toledo, Ohio should be in place by December 2013. Exhibits will include a 160-year-old great lakes news
Country Star Alan Jackson Donates Antique Boat to ABM The Antique Boat Museum (ABM) in Clayton, New York recently received a donation from one of country music’s biggest stars. Alan Jackson, known for being one of the most-nominated artists in County Music Association (CMA) history, has contributed a 1955 29-foot Chris-Craft Semi-Enclosed to ABM’s already impressive collection of historic and classic boats. Jackson says he donated the boat, which he named Flat Top, to ABM because of his fondness of and appreciation for the museum’s preservation efforts. “Wooden boats have always been my first love,” Jackson says. “I’ve really appreciated the Antique Boat Museum’s efforts at preserving the history of antique wooden boats.” Flat Top, whose name refers to the flat top, steel-string acoustic guitars commonly used by Jackson, is one of just 36 of these boats ever built by Sarasota, Florida-based Chris-Craft. The project is expected to cost nearly $12.9 million, and fundraising efforts still continue, according to The Daily Journal report. So far, almost $10.5 million has been raised, including more than $6 million in state grants and $1 million in private donations and in-kind support. The museum will be a short boat trip from the Toledo Maritime Academy, where it is expected to be a key resource for academy students.

CenterPointe Finalizes GLYS Purchase, Names New GM

CenterPointe Yacht Services LLC recently finalized its acquisition of Great Lakes Yacht Services (GLYS). Both entities are located in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. The GLYS acquisition makes CenterPointe the largest service yard in northeast Wisconsin. The purchase includes 4 acres of waterfront land with more than 800 feet of dock wall, a 70-ton Marine Travelift and 110,000 square feet of buildings housing six dedicated shops. The combined operations consist of more than 100,000 square feet of indoor boat storage and a dedicated 15,0000-square-foot new and brokerage showroom. “We’ve been on a path of steady growth over the past three years,” says Peter Moede, principal at CenterPointe. “Our goal is to deliver the best single-source boating experience on the western shore of Lake Michigan.” In order to help manage and run the combined operation, CenterPointe recently hired Thomas “Scott” Strang as the facility’s general manager. Sound the Alarm Choosing and installing a carbon monoxide detector.
W
hile shouts of “Fire!,” “Man overboard!” or “We’re out of ice!” are all cries of alarm boaters dread hearing, there’s one alarm many won’t hear that could wind up costing them their lives: The wail of a carbon monoxide detector. Too often this isn’t because the danger doesn’t exist, but rather because there’s no detector installed to begin with. Many of the headline-making news stories concerning boaters and carbon monoxide end badly, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Let’s take a look at how to protect yourself and everyone else on board by installing a carbon monoxide detector.
Know thy enemy Carbon monoxide (CO for short) is a potentially lethal gas produced when burning any carbon-based fuel (gasoline, diesel, propane, wood, etc). The most common source of CO is exhaust from gasoline or diesel engines, although it can be produced by any open flame device, such as stoves, heaters or grills. CO is colorless, odorless, tasteless and mixes evenly with air, meaning it readily travels throughout a boat’s interior

The following general safety recommendations concerning the dangers of carbon monoxide apply to all vessels, and in particular to houseboats and/or similarly constructed vessels: n Stay out of areas where carbon monoxide can collect while the engine or generator is running and for at least an hour afterwards. The U.S. Coast Guard advises boat owners and operators to turn off generators with transom exhaust ports when the swim platform on the stern is in use. n Don’t allow swimmers near exhaust portals or areas where air pockets may be located under the boat. Swimmers should avoid the area beneath transom swim platforms or rear decks while the engine or generator is running; if exhaust vents are located on the vessel’s side, these areas should be avoided as well. Adults should keep a close watch on children at all times, particularly when they are playing or swimming in the swim platform area. As a general rule, passengers or crew should not be allowed to sit on swim platforms while the vessel’s engine(s) or generator is running. n Use caution when boats are tied together, as carbon monoxide generated in one vessel can enter another via air conditioner intakes, open portholes, etc. n Know the signs of carbon monoxide poisoning and if suspected, relocate the victim to an area of fresh air and seek immediate medical attention. n Read and obey all carbon monoxide warnings placed on generators and engines by the manufacturer and never tamper with or disconnect carbon monoxide detectors or monitors. n Turn off generators prior to going to sleep and turn off the main AC breaker so “demand start” generators will not engage during the night. — F.L.

spaces. It enters the body through the lungs and is easily absorbed into the bloodstream, where it displaces oxygen levels and can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning. Although death can occur quickly in a CO rich environment, exposure to smaller amounts can be just as lethal, as the effects of CO are cumulative and can build up gradually in a person’s bloodstream for hours or even days before reaching critical levels. How quickly this occurs is dependent on the concentration of CO being inhaled (measured in parts per million, PPM) and the duration of exposure. Common signs of CO poisoning include headaches, dizziness, weakness, drowsiness, headache and nausea — symptoms that can all-to-easily be attributed to sea sickness, alcohol consumption or too much sun exposure, rather than CO poisoning.
CO detectors Since carbon monoxide (unlike the smoke generated by a fire) is colorless, tasteless and odorless, the only reliable way to guard against it is installation of a CO detector. The American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC), an organization that writes voluntary standards for recreational boats, has called for installation of CO detectors on all boats with enclosed accommodation areas and a gasoline generator or inboard gasoline propulsion engine since 1998. ABYC exempts diesel engines from this requirement, and while it’s true they produce less CO than gasoline engines, my personal recommendation is that detectors be installed aboard all vessels with sleeping accommodations. CO can easily be generated by other onboard sources or even introduced from nearby boats via the ventilation system, which is especially true of boats running air conditioning.
Choosing a CO detector The first impulse for many boaters is to buy a home-type CO detector, but as they typically don’t meet the construction requirements for marine-grade units (such as Underwriters Laboratories Standard 1524), their use is not recommended. Marine CO detectors can be either battery powered (the 9-volt type) or hardwired. The obvious benefit of battery-powered units is that they can be installed almost anywhere without the need for wiring; however, this lack of an external power supply can also be a disadvantage from a reliability standpoint. Like their land-based counterparts, battery-powered, marine-grade CO detectors “chirp” to warn users when their internal battery is low. The problem is that boats (unlike a

typical home or office) may see weeks or months of limited or no use, the fear being that even if the unit chirps away for weeks before finally dying, it’s possible no one will be around to hear it. The best policy here is to self-test the unit weekly and replace batteries regularly as per the manufacturer. Hardwired marine units are powered by the vessel’s 12- or 24-volt DC power system. Those designed for residential or commercial installations (should you still be tempted) use 120-volt AC power, which may not always be available while cruising. Power for hardwired CO detectors must be provided (via an appropriate fuse or circuit breaker) from the “hot” side of the battery switch to prevent them from being accidentally shut off.
Detector Development CO detectors got a bad rap in the past for generating numerous false alarms. Older “single point” alarms began shrieking at the slightest hint of CO, which could be unnerving, as a whiff or two of CO commonly drifts into the cabin periodically throughout the day. Modern units use “time-weighted averaging” to determine the amount of CO present over a period of a few minutes rather than at one point in time, greatly reducing the number of false alarms.
ABYC does not state specifically where CO detectors should be located on your vessel; however, the organization does provide some general guidelines. Primarily, CO detectors must be located to monitor the atmosphere in the main cabin and each sleeping area. Enclosed helms (flying bridges, for example) or any other
Choose a location that both protects the detector from physical damage (rain, spray, sunlight, etc.) and avoids what ABYC calls “dilution of sampled air,” which could occur near hatches, ports or forced ventilation openings. Locations containing “dead air” spaces should be avoided to prevent distorted readings. Unlike LPG or gasoline vapors (which are heavier than air) CO has roughly the same weight as oxygen, meaning detector placement is not limited to high or low areas of the cabin. As such, choose a location that is roughly eye level, which makes it easier to monitor detector meters or warning lights. Finally, CO detectors have a limited lifespan. Detectors or sensors (if part of a system) will typically need to be replaced

dinghy decisions Choosing the tender that’s right for you.
H
anging on davits at the back of a larger boat, hauled up on deck in chocks or even following the family cruiser in tow... more often than not, little thought is given to the humble and trusty dinghy. Used and abused and frequently taken for granted, the dinghy can be of varying design and made from a variety of materials — wood, fiberglass, rubber or any combination thereof. Regardless of what your dinghy is made of, it usually performs similar duties. Sentinel among these is getting to and from the “mother ship” while moored or at anchor. A dinghy can refer to a small boat in its own right, of course, and I — like many others boaters out there — started my boating career sailing dinghies and later worked my way up to much larger vessels. A dinghy that’s used to go to and fro between the shore and your boat is more properly called a “tender;” but no matter what you call it, you’re faced with decisions when choosing this ubiquitous craft.
Inflatables The most common type of dinghy is the inflatable. Growing up these were often called the “Avon” (avonInflatables.co.uk), after the manufacturer of the same name that’s become synonymous with the genre (much like “Kleenex” and tissues). The big advantage of this particular type of dinghy is that it can be deflated when not in use, rolled up and stored inside a locker. All but the very smallest have a floor that can be inserted into the bottom of the boat as it’s being inflated to give a firmer base underfoot, which has the added advantage of keeping feet and supplies dry. Another big name is Zodiac (zodIacmarIneusa.com), which sells products similar to those offered by Avon and others. Buoyancy tubes are generally constructed of two types of materials: Hypalon or PVC. I won’t claim that one is better than the other, and most folks won’t be able to tell the difference; both are durable and long lasting, provided basic maintenance is carried out. But make no mistake that today’s high-tech materials are a far cry from the rubber that was used in World War II-era life rafts.

rIbs The hard-bottomed or rigid inflatable boat (RIB) has tubes just like the inflatable dinghy, but these are glued to a fiberglass bottom that looks like the underwater section of a small powerboat that’s been sawed off at

the waterline. RIBs are quite popular as tenders, and for good reason: They go pretty fast with modest outboard power, are capable of carrying heavy loads, and the tubes won’t damage your boat if you accidentally bump into it. The down side of a RIB, however, is that unlike the true inflatable, it cannot be rolled and stored in a locker.
Hard dinghy If you prefer to row either for fun or exercise (or otherwise eschew the outboard), then the hard dinghy makes the most sense for you. I’m lumping all these together here, but a hard dinghy could be built as a traditional boat using the lapstrake method, plywood or fiberglass. Each have aficionados, and one is not necessarily better than the other. I must confess I have a hard dinghy myself, mostly because I felt that an inflatable wouldn’t look right atop my traditionally rigged sailboat. Like other tenders, hard dinghies may be carried in davits on the back of the boat or, if there’s room, stored on deck. But where hard dinghies excel is while being towed behind your boat. They generally have less drag than other kinds of small boats and thus will slow you down less.
collapsible There are one or two collapsible boats on the market, and these claim to offer the benefits of a dinghy that can be folded for storage, yet the advantages of a hard tender afloat. Two manufacturers I am familiar with are Wooden Widget (woodenwIdget.com) and Porta-Bote (porta-bote.com). Both fold up width-wise but not length-wise, so they must be stowed as if carrying a paddleboard or surfboard on deck.
which to choose So… which type of dinghy is right for you? The answer to that question is “It depends.” A lot comes down to personal preference, budget and the type of boating that you do. An inflatable or RIB can take a lot of bumps and offer prodigious load-carrying capacity, but they don’t row well. They perform at their best with an outboard clamped on the back. A hard dinghy is often cheaper, can be towed more easily and can be rowed or sailed far easier than other types. It also can be powered by a small motor if desired. The collapsible version may be best if you want the option of a rowing or sailing dinghy, but space is at a premium. LB

You may be familiar with Bavaria’s sailboats, but the company is now entering the North America market with three new powerboats, including the Sport 39 Hardtop. Bavaria Yachtbau GmbH has been building sail- and powerboats up to 55 feet since 1978, so it’s not their first time at the rodeo. All boats are manufactured in Giebelstadt, Germany, to maximize cost efficiencies and quality. The Sport 39 Hardtop comes with Volvo Penta diesel engines ranging from 260 hp (standard) to 370 hp. With the big engines, cruise at 27 knots (31 mph) up to a top speed around 35 knots (40 mph). I
t was a beautiful summer day as I left Chicago behind and headed north to rendezvous with Jon Viestenz of Cruisers Yachts and BVK senior account executive Jenny Pandl (BVK is the ad agency that represents Cruisers). We planned to meet that morning at SkipperBud’s on Wisconsin’s Lake Geneva, a wonderful spot for a boat test (or just about anything else, for that matter.) Lake Geneva has been a playground for Chicago’s well heeled for more than 150 years. The boat we planned to put through her paces is a new entry to the Cruisers family for the 2014 Model Year: A proud member of the Cruisers Sport Series (SS), which features boats ranging in size from 21 to nearly 33 feet. This particular beauty is the 328 SS Bow Rider, the largest model in the lineup.
Get with the times For a variety of reasons, boats have been changing over the past few years to reflect the times. The 328 is an excellent example of this phenomenon. Let me explain. In the past, most boats were designed with a single purpose in mind: Fishing, cruising, racing, etc. Unlike the trend of days gone by, the 328 SS was designed to be a multi-purpose boat, perfectly well suited for day trips and cruising, watersports activities, and simple overnights (it sleeps a couple comfortably). The 328’s size allows for some interesting innovations. The boat is rather spacious at 32 feet, 11 inches overall, with a generous 10-foot, 6-inch beam. This means room for people — a LOT of people. The 328 will hold up to 16 passengers comfortably, and there’s plenty of space to stash the bodies. The open bow area seats half a dozen and comes with an optional pedestal table, which adds a little ambience. The bow cockpit is deep and sports full-size backrests and a raised grab rail to port and starboard. A deep v-bottom hull makes for a smooth, comfortable ride, even in slight chop. The J-shaped seating forward means two people can sit facing one another, something that’s a bit unusual in a typical bowrider configuration. Storage is abundant on this boat, with ample room located under each of the bow seats. Beneath the J-shaped seat is a standard, slide-out, 48-quart cooler perfect for keeping beverages cool on a hot, steamy day (or whenever, really). This placement is guaranteed to keep guests well hydrated throughout the afternoon/evening. Stainless steel drink holders are conveniently nestled into the bulwarks. And if you’re not keen on partying up front, then head aft… especially if you’ve got sun on your mind.

CRUISERS 328 SS The 328’s aft transom bench folds back to form a wide sun pad for two, perfect for soaking up the day’s rays (or, in my case, indulging in a good book). If things get bumpy in the bow, there are numerous stainless grab rails mounted low to the caprail to soothe white knuckles. Inside is what really distinguishes the 328 from other boats in her class. Cruisers was able to design a cabin that includes standing headroom throughout, enclosed wet head, mini galley, TV, stereo… even air conditioning. Options are, of course, available, but the basics are guaranteed to get you by in style and comfort, not to mention the practical use of what might otherwise be considered a compact space. Kudos to the boat’s designer, who, in my opinion, deserves mounds of credit. A lot has been incorporated into just 30-something feet of space, and it has been done well and with efficiency — all while maintaining supreme functionality. Everything comes together swimmingly in the 328 SS, resulting in a finished product that’s as sleek as a Lear Jet.
Power and piloting The 328 offers both Volvo and MerCruiser inboard power options. The Volvo 320C engines turn Duo Prop outdrives and feature a joystick piloting option. Our test boat was outfitted with a MerCruiser 8.2 380 hp and cruised at a comfortable 35 mph. She topped out at a brisk 50 mph. The elegant, functional helm boasts carbon fiber paneling accented with brushed stainless steel and vinyl trim accents. The dash, wheel and joystick are pretty cool; almost aircraft-esque in their placement and appearance. Swivel seats for the captain add a nice, comfortable touch. If you’re looking for a go-anywhere, do-anything boat with the pep and performance of a typical bowrider but with the a-typical overnight capabilities of a small cabin cruiser, then you’ve got to put the Cruisers 328 SS on your short list. This boat isn’t short on anything, and it’s sure to impress. LB

Helm Master allows boaters to slip in and out with the greatest of ease. The skipper can concentrate on docking without minding multiple operating devices. After Dark
A
s a freelance writer and photographer, I’ve covered big-boat shows for close to 10 years now, and they’re still a bit magical: Gleaming finishes, cool toys and great crew. When shooting with a digital camera, it’s usually easier to photograph a yacht during daylight hours. But for me, nighttime is the right time to capture yachts in their natural lighting, as I did at the 2013 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. Lighting a house, building or structure takes a bit of science, and it’s no different for the floating palaces. Yachts take on a different characteristic when lit after dark, and I opt to shoot them as-is, with their existing light setup, to show them in native form. I rarely ever use additional lighting or even a flash when shooting at night. It has allowed me to create a bit of a niche business. Why? Because others either don’t want to take the time or don’t want to learn how it’s done. I don’t see anyone else walking the docks late into the evenings. Am I crazy? Maybe a little, but as long as I have the proper tools with me and know how to use them (a Nikon D600 with 24-85 mm lens, in this case, and a nice cigar or two), I’ll stay up to get what I need.

Camera primer
I’m not going in depth here about camera function and such; this is more of a primer for those who’ve always wanted to shoot at night, but were hesitant or didn’t know how. One thing you do need is patience — for the right night and the proper setup. And, of course, practice, practice, practice. For great results, you’ll need to learn the manual settings of your camera and not shoot everything in automatic mode. Adjustment of the shutter speed, aperture, both or either will vary results. Also, white balance settings may vary depending on light types and intensity. And ISO adjustments will be necessary depending on speed and saturation of light on the sensor. To clarify, aperture refers to the opening of the lens’ diaphragm, regulating the amount of light that passes through and measured in f/stops. The higher the f/stop number, the smaller the aperture opening. White balance controls the way a camera sees light, like keeping white objects looking white in various environments. ISO

is the sensitivity of the image sensor; the lower the number, the less sensitive the camera is to light, and the finer the grain.
The secret weapon
I’ve had many people tell me they don’t take good night photos when they try to hold the camera still. With shutter speeds lasting anywhere from a few fractions of a second to a few seconds due to the low-light environment, you’ll rarely be able to hold it still enough. My secret weapon? A tripod. A good, rigid stand that won’t vibrate in the wind. It may cost a few hundred bucks, but if you’re serious about getting out and shooting, make the investment. I use a Manfrotto tripod with collapsible aluminum legs, adjustable center column and quick release tripod head for interchanging cameras. Boat shows are only in town for a few days, and you’re forced to get out and get the shots despite weather conditions. I won’t shoot in the rain, but in most all other conditions I’m out there. Wind is not a yacht photographer’s friend, as it brings many variables into play. First, your subject is likely moving — and so might the platform that you’re standing on (like a floating dock, as is the case in Fort Lauderdale). Right there exists a recipe for disaster. Vibrations also can cause problems, like when you’re shooting from a bridge and traffic is zooming past (yes, bridges do flex). Add in poor lighting, and you have your work cut out for you. To alleviate some or all of the above challenges, learn how to use the shutter speed and aperture settings on your camera. For moving objects, you’ll want a faster shutter; but then you’ll also need to have the aperture open to allow more light in. If underexposed, raise the ISO to 400, 800, 2400 or more, depending on camera type. Remember: The higher the ISO, the more noise or grain will be in the photo.
Subject matter
Okay, so you think you’re ready to hit the docks? The next question you should be asking yourself is, “What do I shoot?” Remember that it’s not what you see from your eye level, but what the camera picks up from the location of the lens. It may be higher or lower than your eye and produce a different perspective than what was originally expected. Find interesting stuff, like scenes, lighting effects, colors, objects, perspectives, etc. It could be an entire object, or just part of one. Look at things from different angles: High, low, sideways. And you may have to step away to take it all in. For example, the fireworks photo (page 33) was taken across the waterway from the show, to incorporate some of the yachts into the foreground while at the same time capturing the pyrotechnics. The trick with fireworks is that

you don’t know what will launch next in terms of height, intensity or trail, so it’s a bit of a guessing game setting the shutter and aperture. But you’ll learn with practice. When the fireworks commenced, the yachts created a nice display themselves all lit up (opening spread, pages 32-33). The searchlights and clouds add drama, and the hotel adds perspective. The motorcycles photo (page 32) is an example of part of an object. They were located on the upper deck of a beautiful yacht, but the lights on the bikes caught my attention and became the subject.
Expert advice
Frame your photos. There’s a general principle called “The Rule of Thirds,” where you divide an image into thirds, horizontally and vertically, and the subject is aligned in two-thirds of the view. It’s supposed to give balance and focus to an image by not having the subject directly in the center. But I’m of the school that rules are meant to be broken, and I don’t always follow them to a “T.” Which is perfectly okay, as photos are subjective creations. Shoot from different locations. From the docks, you see the stern of the yachts; but a shot from the roadway bridge offers a difference. Get friendly with some of the yachts’ crew, who usually allow me on board to snap a photo or two from the upper deck or bow. Pull in the environment. Many yachts have underwater lights that add pizzazz, so include them for cool effect. Here you may need to adjust shutter and aperture for best balance and results. It’s tricky to shoot after dark. But with knowledge and practice, you, too, can create dramatic, awe-inspiring images. Perhaps even worthy of a magazine feature. LB

It reads: “Be nice or leave.” If you aren’t at first sure how to take that message, just wander the lakefront parks and charming harbors of this town wrapped around the eastern end of Lake Charlevoix. As the weekly Farmer’s Market winds down Traverse City against the backdrop of a lake glistening in the sunlight, a young boy waves high a sign offering pumpkins — all free. Down the street, in what’s known as the town’s arts district, Lake Street Market owner Liz Glass does charge for her cleverly-named sandwiches, wines and other gourmet picnic fare. But the goodwill is just as evident when you mention how nice it’d be to have a fresh-made bagel with imported cheese delivered to a boat slip some morning. “Of course,” she replies, even though there’s no formal delivery service in place. “We’d find a way to get it there. Just tell us when.” An organized, decade-long Main Street effort has led to a shared ethic of friendly, as well as a lively artistic vibe that belies the town’s small size. The sounds of folk guitars, country, blues and rock waft from multiple street corners each Friday night when summer’s “Stroll the Streets” event brings music, street performers and deals to town. Every month brings a featured festival — or three — like February’s Chocolate Covered Boyne culinary celebration, March’s Irish Heritage Fest, or May’s Morel Mushroom Festival celebration of a North Woods favorite delicacy. galleries also draw visitors by car and boat, and some $1 million in architectural restorations lend a back-in-time feel to the red brick facades of the one-time lumber boomtown. Yet the main attraction is the one celebrated in the official town motto: “Where Life Meets Lake.”
All roads lead to the lake The city’s main streets all end in Lake Charlevoix, if they don’t run along it, and there’s an objective basis for the local claim that you’re visiting the “best lake East of the Rockies.” A 2012 USA Today reader poll proclaimed Lake Charlevoix a close runner-up to the nation’s top vote-getter, Lake Tahoe. One reader proclaimed it’s “Where the Gods swim,” describing the lake as spiritual in its clarity and the way the color is offset by surrounding hills of every shade of green. Another reader mentioned its sandy beaches, fruitful fishing, mysterious loons, quaint towns and world-class sunsets. The way its clear, deep, often turquoise blue is ringed by a shallow ledge also, readers noted, lends itself perfectly to a relaxed day of anchoring with the family. From Boyne City’s newly expanded marina, Lake Michigan is just a 15-mile boat trip west to the port of Charlevoix. The outlet offers a rare inland lake connection to the rest of the world via the Great Lakes. Within even easier reach are several other quaint towns with their own vacation traditions, perfect for day trips. East Jordan, an artist enclave located at the tip of the lake’s southern arm, is notable for its glass blowers and potters and easy access to the fast-flowing Jordan River, designated both a National Wild and Scenic River and a blue-ribbon trout stream. Jordan Valley Outfitters even offers popular, if unusual, winter river trips in a large blue raft that floats past ice formations resembling lace. Trips stop for a snowshoe hike through woods glistening with untouched snow, hot chocolate and bonfire at the river’s edge. If you’re looking for a boat slip, fuel, repairs or a boat to rent in this area, Swan Valley Marina is a full-service marina in operation for more than 70 years. They offer a full line of watercraft rentals, including open bow ski boats, pontoons, fishing boats and WaveRunners. They are also an authorized dealer for ShoreStation docks and hoists. Charlevoix, at the lake’s far end, offers vibrant restaurants and galleries. It’s also a gateway to Lake Michigan resort towns like Harbor Springs and Petoskey, notable for its multiple galleries, Victorian architecture and the Bay View Association Chautauqua community. A cottage community that started as a United Methodist Church-run tent camp, Bay View has

Fun Fests Come summer, Boyne City throws a festival each week — sometimes more. And there are visitworthy events taking place in all seasons, none with more history than the mushroom-loving Morel Festival (morelfest.com) held for more than 50 years the third weekend each May. Manytime champion Anthony Williams once collected 600 morels in a 90-minute hunt featured at the festival, but now he shares tips on guided festival tours, a highlight that rivals April’s Taste of Boyne sampling of the delicacy as prepared by chefs from more than a dozen area restaurants. Two of the city’s newer festivals are similarly worth planning a visit around. The SoBo Arts Festival features a juried art show, music and entertainment and is held the last weekend of June. And the streets close each year the second week of July for the fast-growing, adrenalinepumping Boyne Thunder, with its featured event a poker run by high-performance boats. throughout history hosted some of the top thinkers of its day, bringing speakers like William Jennings Bryan and Helen Keller to the Midwest. Concerts, and its weekly summer lectures on religion and life, remain open to the general public.
City born of a dream There’s something special, though, about Boyne City that you’ll sense as you sit atop one of the many benches situated along the water’s edge, or occupy a waterside table at Cafe Santé and feast dreamily on European-style mussels and frites while looking out over a blazing patio bonfire. Even without the culinary magic, the surrounding hills create a valley feel, as if this spot is somehow removed from the rest of the world. In 1856, New Yorker Harriet Miller got a picture of just such a place in a dream of a cabin located on the shore of a bear-shaped lake. The dream was so vivid that she set out with husband John to find the home she believed to be her destiny. On the north shore of Lake Charlevoix, she found a vacated cabin and settled in, and the town’s name came when they wandered past a small stream and christened it the Boyne River, after a similarly clear stream in John’s native country of Ireland. The beloved couple wasn’t the only Charlevoix County leaders thought to be drawn by divine forces. Nearly a decade earlier, in 1848, Jesse James Strang helped to write one of the strangest chapters in Midwestern history when he claimed to have received a directive from God to form a Mormon colony on Beaver Island in Lake Michigan, just off the coast of Charlevoix. He proclaimed himself King of Beaver Island and was eventually elected to the state legislature before being assassinated by disgruntled followers in 1856. While the Beaver Island colony disbursed, Boyne City grew with the help of its many old-growth forests. At the town’s industrial peak, three sawmills were operating along the lakefront with a tannery and other industries. The population swelled to 7,000 — about double the town’s current size. The area’s lumber boom was at its height when Dr. Clarence Hemingway and his wife, Grace, of Oak Park, Illinois, first came by train and steamship to nearby Walloon Lake, just a few miles north of Lake Charlevoix, and built Windemere Cottage as their summer home. They returned year after year, and the experiences their young son, Ernest, had amid the lumber camps, trout streams and Native American villages of that day would form the basis for his popular Nick Adams stories.

The infamous author was known for his escapades at an early age, or so you’ll learn in a visit to the Red Fox Inn, a Hemingway-themed bookstore located in the two-shop enclave of Horton Bay just northeast of Boyne City. Pay attention to the hand-painted sign on the porch suggesting you inquire about a “Last Good Country Tour.” The tour offers you a guided walk through the actual spots (and tales of the people) that inspired Hemingway’s stories. You’ll also hear a few inside bits from store owner Jim Hartwell, the grandson of original owner Vollie Fox — the man who taught Hemingway to fish. He’ll lead you to Ten Mile Point, where in “The End of Something,” Nick Adams dumps the not-fictional local girl Marjorie Bump and perhaps tell of the time young Ernest got up in the night, rang the school bell until all the lights in town were on, then went back to bed.
Year-round tourism from a chairlift Year-round tourism grew dramatically when a young Studebaker dealer named Everett Kircher decided the state needed a ski resort and used elevation maps to pinpoint a promising spot just 7 miles from Boyne City. He bought the land for $1 from a farmer who believed in the vision and couldn’t grow anything on the steep slopes. Kircher then installed one of the earliest chairlifts ever built. A pioneer in both lifts and snowmaking, Kircher grew Boyne Mountain into the largest ski resort between New England and the Rockies and expanded the season by laying out the first nine-hole golf course himself and hiring architects like Robert Trent Jones Jr. for further development. Today, you can book a room at the Alpine-themed Mountain Grand Lodge and watch kids rejoice as the family heads to the attached Avalanche Bay, the state’s largest indoor water park. There are slopes for skiers and snowboarders of every level, but those who prefer alternate adventures are in luck, too, with horse-drawn sleigh rides, tubing parks, new fat tire winter bike rentals, and even a zipline adventure course. Spring brings segway tours and fly fishing instruction. More public land with a view is located at Young State Park, just outside the Boyne City limits. Long stretches of sandy beach are perfect for quiet strolls and especially popular with boaters, as are the camp’s rental cabins. Those with more gracious lodging accommodations in mind will love the nestled-in-the-pines feel of Horton Creek Bed and Breakfast. There, rooms with woodsy names like Bear, Moose and Treetop fit well with the log cabin-like interiors. For world-class sunset views and the roominess of a condominium, the popular choice is Water Street Inn, right on Lake Charlevoix in Boyne City.

Fail to Sail Cruising with no mast is just no good.
I
am aware that this publication tends to focus on powerrather than sailboats, but this is merely a propulsion preference. At heart we all share the same love of our lakes — and the challenge of keeping our vessel(s) of choice in safe, dependable operating condition. As for the purity of sail power, the “rag baggers” must admit to needing an internal combustion boost for docking, anchor setting and making headway on calm days. Even then, they still have a mast and boom to proclaim their status. The idea of launching a cruising sailboat without a mast would be an unthinkable embarrassment — unless fate should decree it in non-negotiable terms. For my eldest daughter and her husband, their decree from fate made itself known during the lowest period of our recent Great Lakes low-water challenge. From the very beginning of their full-time involvement with boating, my daughter and son-in-law chose the Grand Traverse Bay area of Lake Michigan as their homeport waters. This included the need for winter storage, along with the seasonal routines of fall haul-out and spring launching. Back when springtime water levels continued to fall, so did the hopes for a normal boating season. Dredging became both a priority issue and, in some cases, a budgeting challenge. State and municipal funds would become involved, but private funding would also be challenged. Dredging is not necessarily an equal opportunity activity. After an early spring visit to their storage facility, my young crew returned home with the good news that dredging was scheduled for their area of the bay, and spring launch would take place without a hitch — except, at the time of their visit, the dredging fate of the water at their alternate mast storage facility had yet to be confirmed. Without deeper water to bring the boat into the slip where mast-hoisting equipment was available, there would be no sail power for the summer. And moving the mast overland to an alternative dredged location wouldn’t work. The hoisting gear is not portable, and doing it by muscle power alone is not an option. At this point you might be wondering: Why is not having a mast such a big deal? After all, they still have their boat to live on… and it still has a diesel engine to cruise with, right? And often the winds are so light that sailors cruise under power anyway. This is true — to a point. But if you’ve never seen a sailboat without a mast, you have no idea how weird they appear.

All of the symmetry that makes sailboats look so well balanced is gone. What remains is an embarrassingly weird profile that seems more related to a barge than a boat. It’s the marine version of driving to the lake without tires, or walking to the beach naked. It’s just flat-out wrong! Needless to say, my daughter and her husband were deeply concerned about mast availability; but they also are creative realists. They are fully aware that their diesel power can take them anywhere they wish to go, so all they need is a bit of image enhancement to substitute that obvious emptiness out on the foredeck. Without even leaving the boat to go shopping, they found a solution. (Not a practical one, mind you, but a solution nonetheless.) Obviously, there’s no appropriate stand-in for the towering grandeur of a mast. The concept focused more on the creative attitude of the crew rather than a serious attempt at a working substitute. They realized they had a shirt on board, plus dingy oars and a broom. Ladies and gentlemen… behold the marinized “scarecrow” solution! LB
