FROM THE HELM by Bing O’Meara

Lakeland Boating: Est. 1946 70 years as the voice of the Sweetwater Seas.

PUBLISHER Walter “Bing” O’Meara

T

his January, we celebrate our 70th year of publishing Lakeland Boating magazine, formerly Lakeland Yachting. In 1946, avid boater Vic Schoen placed an ad in the Chicago Tribune to sell his 36-foot 1925 wooden Burger, Sea Toy II. Schoen then used the $1,300 from the sale to launch his new magazine: Lakeland Yachting and Motorboating. In 1957, the name of the magazine was changed to Lakeland Boating. I took the helm of Lakeland Boating in 1983 when I purchased the magazine — it’s been an exciting journey ever since! This issue kicks off the New Year, and we have an excellent array of stories, including: a feature to help guide winter insurance decision-making (pg. 32); a roundup of some of the tastiest Great Lakes breweries (pg. 35); and a Port of Call on Hamilton, Ontario (pg. 40). Hamilton is surrounded by spectacular nature and is emerging as one of Canada’s cultural hot spots, with a rich history, activities and attractions for everyone. Throughout the year, we will run an editorial piece from the past in my “From the Helm” column. The first entry is a portion of “How the Great Lakes were Named,” which appeared in the May 1948 issue of Lakeland Yachting. Today, the names “Lac de St. Louis,” “Lac du Chat,” “Karegnondi,” “Lac de Puans,” and “Lac Tracy,” sound very strange. But in the early days, when names varied with mapmakers, they were just a few of those given to the five Great Lakes. When Champlain discovered Lake Ontario in 1615, he named it “Lac de St. Louis.” This title remained as late as 1656 until a map made by Crexius labeled it “Lacus Ontario.” In the language of the Iroquois, “Ontara” meant lake and “Ontario,” beautiful lake. Naturally, this name stuck! Both the Erie Indians and the panther, or wildcat, inhabited the shores of Lake Erie, thus “Lac du Chat” honored the wildcats and the Indians — the early French writers taking “Erie” to mean cat. Because of Lake Erie’s proximity to Ontario, it would seem to be the next in line for discovery. Its shores, however, were so fiercely guarded by the Iroquois that the French did not gain access until 1668, making Lake Erie the last of the five to be explored. Before the French arrived, the Erie’s had become involved in war with their related tribe, the Iroquois, and were annihilated. Lake Huron was called “Karegnonoi” by mapmaker Sanson, “Mer Douce,” by Champlain, and, in 1660, “Mare Dulce Seu Lacus Huronum,” by Crexius. The “Huronum” is a permanent memorial to the Huron Indians inhabiting its shores…. “Lac de Puans,” or “Lake Michigan,” was a great disappointment to Jean Nicolet when he discovered it in 1634. Discovers had lived in hope of finding the ocean leading to Asia since the days of Columbus. Nicolet heard that a western body of water was settled by the Winnebago’s (“stinking people”). He thought, along with a lot of others, that this referred to the fact they lived by stinking, or salt water… Nicolet was dismayed to find on reaching his destination that the Winnebago’s were just more Indians, and it was not the water that smelled! “Lac Tracy of Superieur,” was the name originally given to Lake Superior by the Jesuits, apparently an effort to keep alive the name of A.M. de Tracy. The “Superieur” part of the name, which means Upper Lake, is all that survived, a fact accredited to its aptness… Though each lake had a variety of names, it will be generally agreed that most fitting is the adjective applied to all five — “Great.”

Elandra Yachts Makes Waves in U.S.

Elandra Yachts, Australian boat builder and designer, has announced its official entry into the United States market. Michael Usina was appointed as the American representative and president of Elandra Yachts Sales in America. “Michael is a very respected veteran of the marine industry in the U.S., and with his appointment, we are on track for our projected growth,” says Elandra Yachts founder and managing director Luke Durman. “The Americas is strategically a very important market... We already have an exceptionally valuable boat in the Elandra 53, but the softer Aussie dollar makes it even better value for the Americans, who engage in similar coastal cruising to the Australian market and are after long-range, fuel efficient, seaworthy and spacious boats.” From his Florida base, Usina will coordinate direct factory representation with a select group of American dealers in order to secure sales of Elandra Sport Yachts to be custom-built and shipped from the company’s plant on the east coast of Australia. The first U.S. sale is scheduled for delivery in mid-2016. Development is currently underway on new models, including a 50- and 60-foot plus model. “My first impressions of Elandra were very positive. In fact, I believe it may be the finest boat that I will have been involved in representing and promoting in my career,” Usina says. Prestige Yachts seem to be taking the Great Lakes by storm, and the Great Lakes dealer, Spring Brook Marina, hosted one amazing event for their proud owners group. Spring Brook’s 1st Annual “Prestige-ous” Weekend Getaway was held the weekend of July 31 to August 2, 2015. Nine total Prestige Yachts made their way from various home ports to Saugatuck, Michigan for a weekend of relaxation and fun. Over 35 guests attended the event held at Tower Marine in Douglas, Michigan. The group was treated to a welcome reception at Mermaids Bar and Grill on Friday night upon arrival and a very nice owner’s reception dinner at Coral Gables on Saturday evening. Spring Brook provided two techs for the weekend to work on any small repairs that needed to be done and to answer any questions the owners had about the boats. The event was a great success for Prestige, Spring Brook and the owners group. Not only did it bring Prestige Yachts owners together for a nice meet and greet, it also helped make some connections and friends throughout the Prestige boating community. Spring Brook plans to continue with this event on an annual basis, traveling to different ports each year. They see this event growing in size and popularity every year and think it’s a great way to showcase these amazing yachts, while offering owners a fun experience aboard their Prestige. Mercury Marine Introduces SpitFire X7 Propeller Mercury Marine has unveiled the SpitFire X7 — a stainless steel propeller designed to improve all performance facets of the growing 75-115hp outboard class. The SpitFire X7 is the first in its engine class to be marketed with Mercury’s proprietary X7 alloy, which is 30 percent stronger and four times more durable than conventional steel. Using the X7 alloy, and building off the best-in-class aluminum SpitFire, the SpitFire X7 will significantly improve acceleration, top speed and holding compared to other stainless steel propellers in its class. “A high-performance propeller is the most cost-efficient way to improve a boater’s experience, and for the 75-115hp outboard class, the SpitFire X7 delivers,” says Jared Reichenberger, brand manager for Mercury Propellers. “With gains of up to 1.5 miles per hour and 0 to 20 acceleration improvements by 5-plus seconds versus other stainless propellers, the SpitFire X7 will be a staple in the Mercury propeller lineup for many years to come.” The SpitFire X7 is available at Mercury dealers. Eastland Disaster Memorial at Old Lighthouse Museum The Eastland Disaster Memorial was dedicated on July 24, 2015 at the Old Lighthouse Museum in Michigan City, Indiana to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the SS Eastland disaster. The chartered excursion ship rolled over onto its port side in about 20 feet of water while tied to the wharf in the Chicago River. The ship was bound for a company picnic outing at Washington Park in Michigan City. In total, 844 passengers and crew on board perished. The Eastland disaster represents the single greatest loss of life in Great Lakes maritime history. The Michigan City Historical Society Inc., Old Lighthouse Museum erected a memorial to honor those lost in the tragedy. An anchor chain, made of 844 links, winds its way to the Trail Creek wharf where the SS Eastland was to have arrived. One chain link for each life lost symbolically represents the magnitude of the tragedy. — Paul Kemiel BUSINESS

Walstrom Marine Celebrates 70 Years

Walstrom Marine got its start in Harbor Springs, MIchigan in 1946, when Ward and Roma Walstrom and Paul Griffeth bought a 43-year-old boat yard from Henry Melching. There were 18 covered slips and storage for 100 boats. One of the early stockholders was Charles Hollerith, son of one of IBM’s founders, Herman Hollerith. The Chris-Craft franchise went with the yard, which proved to be a valuable asset for many years. Another asset was an elevator lift that Melching built in 1938. Capable of hauling around 50 tons, it was one of the largest lifts in Northern Michigan. In 1960, Walstrom Marine expanded to a second site east of town, developing a yacht basin for 100 slips, storage, service and haul out. Walstrom also built heated storage buildings to keep customer’s yachts cozy all year and to provide an environment for employees to work year-round. In 1971, Walstrom Marine became a dealer for Hatteras Yachts. Ten years later, Walstrom added Tiara and Pursuit, noted for building high quality, open style yachts. In 1983, Fred Walstrom and Ward Walstrom, Jr. purchased the company from their parents. In 1987, addressing the need to haul and service

larger yachts, Walstrom expanded to Cheboygan, Michigan. An 18,000-square-foot heated building, haulout slip with a 70-ton lift, and 40 deep-water slips were constructed on the Cheboygan River, with direct access to Lake Huron. In 1995, the original downtown building was torn down, and the new store and office building were completed in time for the 50th anniversary celebration. The exquisite cherry paneled store “Propellers” has become a popular stop for the latest in yacht clothing and accessories. In 2009, Walstrom Marine converted its downtown building and 65 slips to a deposit membership club called The Boathouse of Harbor Springs. The following year, the Roe Building was rebuilt with new offices on two floors, large glass doors and skylight, and an indoor, heated showroom. On May 3, 2011, Walstrom Marine Sales moved to its new location at 500 Bay Street. Service has been the key to Walstrom becoming one of the oldest, most reputable marinas on the Great Lakes. Employees have become an integral part in the management of the company. The employees are experienced people building sound business relationships with customers, and caring people responsive to the needs of one another and the community. WALSTROM.COM

New Davit on Deck

Hurley Marine, the industry’s innovative leader in dinghy davit systems, has added a new system to its davit line-up: the H30+. The new H3O+ Dinghy Davit has all the great features of its predecessor, the H3O, but is larger for heavier loads, includes inner linear bunks and comes standard with an Electric 12v Winch. The H3O+ can muscle up to 725 pounds and longer loads up to 13 feet with ease. In addition, now there is also an Electric Winch option offered for the original H3O Davit system. Both H3O Davit systems are specifically designed to allow the safe retrieval and stowage of a RIB dinghy/hard hulled tender or jet ski (works great with the Sea-Doo Sparks) using the linear bunk system for your boat or dock. The H3O davit systems are easily installed and have a stainless steel mounting system, which provides a quick release, leaving a very small footprint and a clear deck for any activity. Electrical Checkup Inspecting and protecting your electrical systems. hile it’s true that electricity and water don’t mix well, regular inspections of your boat’s AC and DC electrical systems can head off issues like inoperative electronics and fire. Here’s how to keep your time on the water safe and electrically trouble-free. Safety first! Although these following checks are geared towards the average boater, if you don’t feel comfortable inspecting or modifying your electrical system, seek the advice of a competent marine electrician who’s familiar with the standards and recommendations provided by the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) and the American Boat and Yacht Counsel (ABYC).

When corrosion progresses to this level (top), it’s always a good idea to remove and clean the battery terminal. This corroded terminal board (middle) is a “gremlin hatchery” for generating a wide range of electrical issues. Check plugs and inlets (bottom) regularly for signs of corrosion and overheating.

Battery basics Start your inspection of the DC system at its heart — the battery. Check all battery terminals and connectors for corrosion, loose hardware, broken wires, etc. The use of wing nuts to secure battery cables is not recommended; they’re difficult to properly torque and may work loose due to vessel movement. A better solution is to use stainless steel nyloc nuts instead. Clean the corrosion from all battery tops and posts using a rag dipped in a solution of water and baking soda (mix a few tablespoons of baking soda into a pint of water), and dry afterwards with a clean rag. For severe corrosion, pull terminal connectors and brighten both the battery post and the inside of the connector with a wire brush. Then, reinstall and spray with a good marine corrosion inhibitor (such as Boeshield’s T-9 Spray Lube or CRC’s Heavy-Duty Corrosion Inhibitor). Check the electrolyte levels of non-maintenance free wet cell batteries and top off low cells with distilled water. To accurately test your battery, allow it to charge overnight, disconnect the terminal lugs, let the battery sit for 12 hours or so and then check its voltage. Wet cell batteries should read 12.6 volts or greater, while fully-charged gel cell and Absorbed Glass Matt (AGM) batteries should read slightly higher at 12.8 to 12.9 volts. It’s also a good idea to check and compare voltages with the battery loaded and unloaded, as some “good” battery voltages will drop well below acceptable levels when placed under load (keying a VHF radio, for example). As for installations, all batteries must be properly secured so that movement is no greater than 1 inch in any direction. They should also be installed in liquid-tight, acid-proof boxes or trays (to contain electrolyte spills) and all positive terminals must be covered with a non-conducive shield to prevent accidental shorting. Installation of rubber terminal “boots,” or a plastic battery box lid, will satisfy this requirement.

Electrical panel inspections Check circuit breakers by flipping each individually to verify that their respective circuits are energized. Replace breakers that have a worn or loose feel during operation. Some boaters develop the bad habit of using circuit breakers as on/off switches for energized equipment; this wears out breakers quickly and causes arcing, which can damage both breaker contacts and sensitive electronics equipment. After securing all power, open and inspect the rear of each AC and DC panel for problems such as corrosion, charred terminals, broken wires and exposed conductors. Check all breakers and fuse holders (ensuring everything is tight and secure), and organize wiring behind the panel using wire ties or other wire management tools. All panel connectors should be crimp-on ring terminals, preferably the type with attached heat shrink tubing to prevent moisture entry and corrosion. Replace all electrical tape joints and household type twist-on connectors — both will eventually fall off, leaving exposed, energized conductors. Wiring Inspect all spaces for loose, hanging wire runs, damaged conductors and chafe points (particularly where wires pass through bulkheads). Wiring should be supported at least every 18 inches with non-metallic supports, except in the engine room, where metallic wire supports are required. The use of solid copper wiring (such as ROMEX) is not recommended aboard. Solid wire is susceptible to breakage due to vibration, a situation that can result in arcing and possibly a fire (particularly with regards to the AC system). Have all solid wiring replaced with multi-stranded, marine-grade wire by a competent marine electrician. AC shore power cord Start your inspection by turning off your boat’s main AC and shore pedestal breaker. Next, unplug the AC shore power cord at both ends and lay it on the dock to facilitate your inspection. Inspect the power cord for chafe, cracks, split insulation or electrical tape repairs — all of which are grounds for replacement. Check plugs and inlets, both at the boat and dock, for discoloration (an indication of overheating) or corrosion. This should be done each time you disconnect shore power or monthly, at a minimum. Avoid using worn or damaged pedestal plugs and report them to marina personnel as soon as possible. Regular inspections also provide an opportunity to familiarize yourself with each onboard electrical system and help make you more self-sufficient in the event a problem occurs. ★

ASK THE EXPERT by Elizabeth Altick

The Facts on Flares Sirius Signal CEO Anthony Covelli educates boaters on the benefits of the new SOS signal device.

Covelli: The most widely available pyrotechnic flare lasts a mere three minutes and burns at more than 2,000 degrees. They have a relatively short shelf life before becoming out-of-date and useless. This means that boaters have to remember to purchase new ones, or face a fine when the boat is inspected. And since they have to be bought so frequently, the old ones obviously must be thrown away. CONTACT Sirius Signal 1254 Scott Street San Diego, CA 92106 888-526-0005 SIRIUSSIGNAL.COM

LB: We understand that very few people dispose of pyrotechnic flares properly. What is the environmental impact of improperly disposed flares?

Covelli: The effect on the environment is disastrous because legal disposal is nearly impossible and very costly. Unused flares contaminate ground water with a toxic chemical called perchlorate. In 2005, the state of Rhode Island did a study examining perchlorate levels in a state reservoir and discovered that one unburned flare could contaminate 240,000 gallons of water. LB: What are the problems associated with flare guns?

ELIZABETH ALTICK specializes in recreational marine, cultural and humaninterest subjects. She was formerly executive editor of a recreational boating magazine.

22

JANUARY 2016

|

Covelli: Pyrotechnic emergency flare guns can be extremely dangerous in the wrong hands. Patented in 1859, 20 years before Edison’s invention of the light bulb, the original flare gun has changed little during its vast history, remaining as much a safety hazard today as it was more than 150 years ago. Strangely, for an item meant to save lives, flare guns have been responsible for numerous deaths, both intentional and accidental. Pyrotechnic visual distress signals of all types — like traditional firearms — have the ability to cause fatal injuries and require training for proper use. In addition, the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) often has to respond to false alarms caused by the misuse of pyrotechnic flares. LB: It seems the Sirius’ electric visual distress signal device (eVDSD) is a practical and superior alternative to a pyrotechnic flare. How does it work?

Covelli: The battery-operated, buoyant and lightweight LED SOS Distress Light is easy to use. The simple on/

LAKELANDBOATING.COM

off unit floats and can be tethered, hand-held, or, ideally, hoisted to the top of a mast or antenna. As opposed to a traditional flare that must be held over the side of the boat (so as not to cause damage), the LED can be safely used onboard. The biggest advantage of an eVDSD is the fact that, in a stressful situation, you don’t have to decide when to use it — you just turn it on. With pyrotechnics, you have to determine the best time to strike or fire them in hopes that someone will see you during the very short time they burn. LB: Does the LED signal meet USCG regulations?

Covelli: Yes. It complies with all requirements for night visual distress signals (VDS). When combined with the included orange daytime distress signal flag, it meets all USCG requirements for day and night VDS. LB: How long does the LED battery last while in storage?

Covelli: The batteries are rated for a shelf life of 10 years, but for ultimate safety we suggest changing them at the beginning of every boating season. Buying three “C” cell batteries is considered very inexpensive insurance. LB: How far can they be seen?

Covelli: Visibility is determined by several factors, such as atmospheric conditions and height off the water. Generally, the Sirius Signal eVDSD SOS signal is visible up to 10 nautical miles. LB: How long do they last in operation?

Covelli: At peak intensity, our device will last for six hours with a total illumination period of up to 60 hours. LB: How much do they cost and where can I order mine?

Covelli: The cost of the Sirius Signal SOS Distress Light unit, with flag and batteries, is $99.95. Complete purchasing information can be found at SIRIUSSIGNAL.COM. ★

A new concept in versatility. BY GARY REICH 29

L A K E L A N D B O A T I N G . CO M | J A N U A R Y 2 0 1 6

P

eople are using their boats in more ways than ever before — especially when it comes to powerboats. Ten years ago, most folks would have scoffed at the idea of toting along kayaks and stand-up paddleboards on their cruises. Today, the sight is relatively commonplace. And, instead of trying to pack a dozen people into the cockpit come happy hour, folks are buying boats with open-concept floorplans that blend the outdoors with the interior, providing space for everyone to enjoy. As a result, many of today’s boatbuilders are designing boats with more utility and versatility. The Jeanneau NC11 exhibits both of those qualities, with a bit of cleverness baked in. Perhaps it’s fitting that the “NC” in NC11 stands for “New Concept.” “The boat is designed for folks who might enjoy a boat that’s got a mix of different themes,” says Jeanneau America president Nicolas Harvey, who accompanied me on the review. “It’s sort of a shape shifter; in some ways it has trawler qualities, while in others it resembles an express boat. In other ways, the boat is very adaptable and utilitarian. But, as you’ll see, it’s still elegant and luxurious.” With that, we left the brokerage office and headed down to the marina dock. As luck would have it, I had the pleasure of running this boat on my home waters of the Chesapeake Bay.

Shape shifter

At first glance, the NC11 has a very angled and serious look, which suits this versatile boat’s purpose well. Look closer and you’ll see some DNA from Jeanneau’s luxury motoryacht division, Prestige Yachts, in the NC11’s lines. My test boat had a tasteful bronze and white color scheme and was smothered in beautiful teak planking on the aft and side decks. Stepping onto the aft deck, you see that this boat is all about enjoying the outdoors. The centerpiece of the aft cockpit is a wide bench with lots of versatility. In its usual position, the bench sits three and separates the sprawling swim platform from the aft cockpit; but pull a couple of pins, slide it forward, and the swim platform real estate increases by at least a third. Slide the whole thing back again, and you’ve expanded the space in the cockpit for entertaining. If that wasn’t enough, you can also turn the versatile unit into a huge sunpad. There’s also plenty of stowage underneath: it’s big enough for paddles, PFDs, or even a small outboard. The NC11’s shape-shifting qualities continue into the main salon. Here, a 4-piece sliding door separates the area from the aft cockpit. Slide the panels open to port or starboard, and it creates a single-level indoor/outdoor living space. Want to open things up even more? Just press a button over the port helm station, and the cabin-wide aluminum and glass sunroof peels back to open up nearly a third of the cabin top space to the sky. Closed, it completely seals out rain and any spray you might encounter. The main salon’s starboard dinette is exceptionally innovative. Its forward bench flips up to create companion seating across from the helm and just behind the one-piece windshield. The dinette’s aft bench flips back to create additional seating in the aft cockpit. The dinette’s table is easily removable and can be placed in the aft cockpit to create an outdoor dining space for six people. Two upholstered stools can be moved around to enhance seating configurations, and the dinette can also be converted to sleeping space. Clever, right? The galley across from the dinette is nicely laid out with a stainless steel sink and a two-burner electric stove, both hidden under two panels that lift up with gas-assist struts. A microwave is just under the stove. A gas cook top and a separate gas oven are an option, and I’d recommend it for more

serious onboard chefs. Counter space is fairly limited, as is stowage space for cookware and dining ware, but Jeanneau has included a nifty “cellar” under the cabin sole, which has pullout drawers and plenty of room for stowing sundries and dry goods. It’s not completely easy to access, but Harvey tells me owners have made all sorts of customizations to this area to suit their cruising needs. All the way forward, and down three steps, is a common landing. Forward is the master stateroom, which has a queen-size island berth. The guest stateroom is to starboard with two single berths, and to port is the shared enclosed head/shower. There’s plenty of light below, thanks to hullside windows and an overhead hatch in the master stateroom. Though it’s likely to feel a little cramped for those of us who aren’t as… ahem… flexible as we used to be, the guest mid-cabin stateroom has enough headroom for getting dressed. All in all, the NC11’s interior feels rich, luxurious and comfortable through and through. Now, let’s go for a ride. My NC11 test craft was fitted with the standard power plant package: a pair of 200hp Volvo Penta D3 turbo diesels, mated to DPS Duoprop sterndrives. A 330hp D6 turbo diesel with DPR Duoprop sterndrive is available as an option, as is Volvo Penta’s joystick steering system, which my test craft had. The engines are installed neatly below the aft cockpit and are easily accessible through a large hatch with gas-assist struts. Access space for routine fluid and filter checks is excellent, as is the accessibility to other mechanical systems that live there, such as batteries, battery chargers and generator, etc. Time to get underway. Motoring out toward the Chesapeake Bay through the marina’s no-wake zone, even with the portside door next to the helm and aft sliding doors open, the cabin and aft deck spaces are extremely quiet. In fact, Jeanneau’s own testing shows only between 58 dBA and 78 dBA at the helm station throughout the engines’ rpm range, and I loosely verified those figures with my very unscientific smartphone decibel meter. At the helm, I find the controls all very easy to read and reach, and I particularly like the sliding door that allows easy access to the portside deck from the portside helm; it vastly enhances ventilation for the skipper. While underway, with the Chesapeake Bay Bridge as a beautiful backdrop, I mash down the throttles. While there’s a bit of the usual turbo lag, the D3s spool up quickly and provide notably good acceleration. After some drive trim adjustments, I coax the NC11 up to around 30 knots at 4,000 rpm. Though I was having some difficulty getting the fuel flow aspects of the engine displays, Jeanneau’s testing shows a fuel consumption of around 20 gallons per hour at this speed. Most folks will want to cruise in the 14-18 mph range, where the best fuel economy lies between two and three gallons per hour. There wasn’t a ton of chop on the Chesapeake the day I ran the NC11, but I quickly dealt with the situation by spinning the NC11 in a series of high-speed figure eight patterns. This gave me a chance to see how nimble the NC11 is, and also allowed me to stir up some fine waves to smash into. Concerning the nimble aspect of that exercise, the NC11 is easy to spin around and tracks extremely well, cornering with ease. As far as the 2- to 3- foot chop I created goes, the NC11 pushed through those waves quite well at full speed. So, should you consider this latest creation from French builder Jeanneau? If your boating adventures involve all sorts of activities — from cruising, to anchoring out, to entertaining friends and family — then the NC11 should be on the top of your list. It’s a new concept with a lot of versatility. ★

Without Discontent S

itting by a fireplace in the throes of an icy January, it’s comforting to know that you (or Harry down at the harbor) took all due precautions in winterizing your boat before it went into storage until spring. In its most basic form, the term “winterization” means protecting a boat’s structure and components from the effects of freezing temperatures, potential ice and heavy snow damage. Winterizing is meant to protect both the exterior and interior of the craft, as well as its surroundings. Considering different types and sizes of boats, sail or power, and where they’re used or stored (within traditional freezing zones or perhaps on the fringes of those zones), will determine what steps are necessary to properly protect them during the off-season. If all the precautions are covered, life should be stress-free at the next launch time. Unfortunately, a lot of things can happen; weather is often unpredictable, a procedure might be overlooked in the winterizing process, a loss of electric power might cause issues at the boat storage facility, or there might be a misunderstanding of who was, or is, responsible for protecting the craft through the winter. Boat owners need to read their policies and ask insurance agents if a boat is covered for ice and freeze damage; if so, where and when. In areas subject to freezing temperatures, the coverage may be excluded and will be noted in the policy as such. Matt Anderson of Global Marine Insurance points out that, “The exclusion may also be referred to as ‘lack of maintenance’ or some similar phrase in policy language, with the unfortunate outcome that if a boat hasn’t been winterized, resulting damage will not be covered.” His recommendation in this scenario would be to choose a policy that doesn’t exclude ice and freezing, which is only slightly more expensive.

Common damages & costs

The most common freezing damage occurs in engines and cooling systems on boats; however, anywhere there’s water onboard is at risk if it’s not drained or treated with antifreeze. Sea strainers, the potable water system, air conditioning, refrigeration, marine heads, holding tanks and related systems also need winterizing. If the boat is stored in water, the superstructure or hull can be damaged by snow load, ice or heaving, which could even lead to sinking. For boats stored in a slip, air bubblers will keep ice from forming, as long as the electricity that powers them stays on.

WINTERIZING

Freeze and ice damage can cost thousands of dollars to fix. Here’s guidance on how to guard against it.

P H O T O C O U R T E S Y O F

BY GREG PROTEAU Ice and freezing can be divided into two categories when it comes to marine vessels: internal and external damage. The freezing and expansion of a liquid in a small space often causes internal damage on small boats. If the liquid freezes, or is not treated with adequate antifreeze, and expands, it usually will create some damage that will manifest at a later date. This is not a covered loss, unless specifically stated in your policy. “Most yacht policies (usually vessels 26 feet and larger) do not generally exclude damage caused from internal ice and freezing damage,” explains Eric Kinney of Frankenmuth Insurance. “However, if you paid someone to winterize your vessel, the insurance company will try to recover from the responsible party. It’s important to know the types of damage that are covered or excluded in your policy. When it comes to external damage on yachts, these policies have well-defined dates of navigation that begin with a launch date of mid-April and end with a lay-up date of mid-October. Many yacht policies differ on the coverage provided for ice and freezing when vessels are exposed outside these limits of navigation.” Assuming due care was taken in the winterizing and storage processes, insurance firms will pay for needed repairs after deductibles. The age of the boat and depreciation may also figure in to the current value of engine, systems and resulting claim payments. For simple claims, resolution is generally quick and straightforward. As the claim amount rises and events leading to the claim become more complex, owner out-of-pocket costs can increase and finalizing the claim will take more time. Additional information regarding the damage may be requested from marine surveyors or others. “Claim costs can vary greatly depending upon the vessel impacted,” says

Todd Shasha of Travelers Boat & Yacht Insurance. “For larger inboard engines, claim costs can run into the thousands of dollars for replacements. Deductibles typically range from 1 to 2 percent of the vessel’s insurable value.” He cautions that claims often occur when an unanticipated cold snap impacts a geographic region that does not typically expect a hard freeze. “About one-quarter of Travelers’ freeze claim payments over the last five years occurred in the states of Georgia, North and South Carolina, and Texas,” Shasha says.

Owners’ responsibilities, filing & fixing

When damage occurs because of a lapse in communication (So, Harry down at the harbor didn’t take care of that!), the boat owner is ultimately responsible. “Generally speaking, if a marina or yard fails to winterize properly, it is responsible for damage,” advises Charles Fort of the BoatU.S. Consumer Protection Division. “However, without a clear contract, it may be difficult to get them to step up. If you winterize yourself and damage occurs, there is no one to shift cost to unless you bought ice and freeze coverage. Insist on a written contract that clearly lists every job necessary to protect the boat, has a firm time frame and specifies not to de-winterize until you authorize it.” Ideally, Fort adds, “Owners should be checking on the boat during the storage period,

New HOllANd BrewiNg

Detroit, MI

Holland, MI Just minutes from the picturesque beaches of Lake Michigan, this brewery is situated right in the middle of Holland’s quaint downtown. Thirsty tourists pack the brewery during the summer months to sample the artisanal menu and large drink selection, and neighboring Hope College kids come for pint night throughout the school year. New Holland has seven year-round beers and an assortment of seasonal beers, including several evolving collections of barrel-soured beers and agribrews. Dragon’s Milk, a bourbon barreled stout, is its best seller. Other noteworthy beers are the Mad Hatter IPA, whose recipe was reformulated in 2015; The Poet oatmeal stout; seasonal Ichabod pumpkin ale; and long-time bartender Kelly Parker’s favorite, Paleeoza, a pale ale made from Michigan hops. New Holland is the first brewery in Michigan to create a brewhouse that creates beer solely made of 100 percent Michigan ingredients. New Holland not only brews beer, but also distills its own gin, rum, vodka, whiskey and liqueur. Currently, New Holland is the largest distiller of whiskey in Michigan. As New Holland’s popularity climbs, it also plans to expand its territory to “Beer City USA” — Grand Rapids, Michigan. New Holland hopes to have this project completed by fall 2016. newhollandbrew.com

Using the traditional German brewing style, Atwater uses a Kasper Schulz brewhouse from the oldest manufacturer of brewing equipment in the world. All of Atwater’s lagers are made with German malt and hops, while its specialty ales are created with American hops. The tap house and brewery are located in the Riverhouse district, with a newer additional location, Atwater in the Park, located 8 miles away in nearby Grosse Point, Michigan. In summer 2016, Atwater will be expanding yet again, and opening a biergarten and tap house just east of the Grand River in the beer city of Grand Rapids, Michigan. With popular brands such as Dirty Blonde, Vanilla Java Porter Hopa-Peel and the Bronze World Cup winner, Decadent Dark Chocolate, it’s no wonder Atwater is growing exponentially and capturing the attention of traditionalists and hopheads alike. atwaterbeer.com

Odd Side AleS Grand Haven, MI Back in 2010, in the quaint beach town of Grand Haven, Michigan, Odd Side Ales opened its doors for the first time. It provides a flavorful beer experience for tourists to flock to in the summer months, as well as a place for locals to relax year-round. The brewery was established in an old piano factory, blending the old with the new as they craft a cornucopia of inventive flavors. It offers three yearround beers that can be found throughout Michigan: Citra Pale Ale (not quite a pale ale, not quite an IPA), Bean Flicker Blonde (coffee blonde) and Mayan Mocha Stout (inspired by Mexican hot chocolate). The selection is seemingly limitless at Odd Sides; with 27 beers on tap, there is truly a taste for every seafarer to sip. oddsideales.com

Head brewer Nick Panchame comes from a culinary background, giving him the knowledge and ability to merge conventional aspects of brewing with unique elements. No flavorings, extracts or syrups are found in Right Brain’s recipes, and the brewery doesn’t filter its beer. Right Brain’s beer is the real McCoy. Its variety of culinary-inspired beers — such as North Hawk Owl Amber Ale (the best seller), CEO (chocolate espresso oatmeal) Stout, Cherry Pie Whole Amber Ale (brewed from 80 cherry pies), and the 2011 Great American Beer Festival gold medal winner, Mangalista Pig Porter (brewed using pig bones and smoked pig head) — are likely attributed to the brewery’s motto, “Keep Beer Curious.” And Right Brain is doing just that by providing 20 exceptional beers on tap in its 33,000square-foot brewpub. rightbrainbrewery.com

Bent Paddle Brewing

Michigan City, IN Shoreline Brewery and Restaurant has 12 beers on tap, as well as a barrelaged series. Perhaps the brewery is best known for the World Beer Cupwinning Beltaine Scottish Ale, which also happens to be one of the first beers it began bottling in 2013. Another crowd pleaser is the Singing Sands Oatmeal Stout, which pays homage to the beautiful southern sandy beaches of Lake Michigan. In addition to these favorites, Shoreline has several rotating seasonal beers. Duluth, MN Bent Paddle Brewing Company’s logo (a bent canoe paddle) holds multiple meanings for the company: it reflects the adventurous landscapes around the Duluth area, represents a love of water sports (particularly paddling), and marks the historical moment when brewer/CEO Byron Tonnis broke the paddle/ mash mixer he was using during his last day working at his former brewery, giving way to a new era and the opening of Bent Paddle.

lakefront Brewery Milwaukee, WI Brewing beer was a hobby-turned-business for the Kilsch brothers. Lakefront Brewery opened in 1987 and has been on the rising tide ever since. With a commitment to environmental conservation, the brewery pledges to reduce waste and consume as little energy as possible, demonstrated by its “green tier” certification appointed by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. In 1996, Lakefront became the first certified organic brewery in the country. In 2006, it received the first federal approval to brew gluten-free beer in U.S. Lakefront not only cares about the environment, but also takes pride in its neighborhood and history. It’s a founding member of Local First — an organization dedicated to creating a more sustainable community and emphasizing the importance of local businesses. Its pride for the city gives roots to the slogan, “Brewed in Milwaukee for people who like beer.” Its flagship beer, Riverwest Stein amber lager, is named for the city of hardworking people in which Lakefront Brewery was founded. In addition, it has eight other year-round beers, as well as a selection of seasonal beers, including the best-selling Pumpkin lager and the Wisconsinite, a beer made only from ingredients native to the state — right down to the wheat, hops, malted barley and water. With a slogan like “Bending tradition since 2013,” it makes sense that Bent Paddle brews non-aggressive, balanced classic style beers, but with a twist on tradition. The water quality is so superb in this region — for brewing and boating alike — that the Adventure Pils pilsner lager made from Lake Superior mirrors the hard to emulate distinctiveness of those brewed in northern Germany. But of course, Bent Paddle perfected this beer by adding its own American touches. A real standout is the Bent Hop golden IPA. Bent Paddle makes drinking beer an engaging experience to be enjoyed while taking in the beauty of the environment. bentpaddlebrewing.com

half acre Beer company Chicago, IL Half Acre believes that beer shouldn’t be your life, but rather, it should accompany you on your adventures — a main reason it chose to put beer in cans instead of bottles.

“We associate the hiss of a freshly cracked can with a ‘let’s do this’ attitude,” says communications coordinator Meredith Anderson. Its 16oz tallboy cans are widely recognizable, as Half Acre was the first craft brewery in Chicago to can beer back in 2010. Daisy Cutter Pale Ale is the biggest seller, and it has been a bridge into the craft beer world for many because of its aromatic hops and favorable taste. Another noteworthy beer is the fall/winter IPA, GoneAway. A 2014 silver medal winner at the Great American Beer festival in the American IPA category, this beer brings new energy and life to a classic beer taste. Half Acre has 10 beers on tap, and there’s something new in its taproom at least once a week to keep things interesting. The Brewerie maumee Bay Brewing co. Toledo, OH Best known for brewing Toledo’s signature Buckeye Beer, Maumee Bay Brewing Co. has been concocting unique brews since 1995. Operating out of the historic Oliver House, and just a stones throw from the Maumee River, Maumee Bay Brewing Co. creates a flavor for every palate, including: the spicy Agave Chili pilsner malt; sweet and seasonal King Prunus Apricot wheat ale; “divinely delicious” Amarillo Brillo IPA with a hefty dose of hops; and the popular Total Eclipse Breakfast Stout. Prior to 2013, Maumee Bay Brewing Co. beer could only be enjoyed from inside the Oliver House, but now retails its 4- and 6-packs so those near and far can enjoy the flavorful brews. mbaybrew.com

Erie, PA When the Brewerie opened in 2006, it was the only brewpub/ restaurant in Erie. It wanted to help revitalize the downtown space, and began doing so the only way it knew how — “one pint at a time.” Located in an old train station, the Brewerie emulates the majesty of the New York Central Railroad Station. Its draft selection pays tribute to the community’s past, with beers including: Major McNair nut brown ale, named after Erie’s first brewer; Apparition amber ale, named for its brewpub haunt; Clara, for a young girl who died falling down the stairs in the train station back in the early 1900s; and the Railway Weizen, a take on a German-style wheat beer. In the summer months, the Brewerie has a trackside beer garden, perfect for watching locomotives roll by while enjoying one of its six year-round beers or seasonal favorites. The Brewerie is crafting beer, doing what it loves and living by its “C-centric” philosophy, which states, “CRAFT a great product. CARE for our staff and patrons. resurgence Brewing company Buffalo, NY Located in an old warehouse that was once home to the Sterling Engine Company, Resurgence Brewery Company (RBC) offers 10 to 12 beers in its on-site taproom. “Our Brewery started out in the spirit of Buffalo’s resurgence (hence the name), in that we wanted to create an awesome beer and somewhere to enjoy it, to draw Buffalo’s people in and help contribute to the ‘rising tide’ that characterizes our Great Lakes area,” says marketing manager, Lizz Schumer. And RBC is doing just that, as made evident by its innovative, eclectic flavored beer, such as the Sponge Candy Stout, Loganberry Wit, Peanut Butter Porter, Vanilla Cappuccino Pumpkin Ale and the best seller, Resurgence IPA. RBC is dedicated to its art and continues to create clean, consistent recipes, which meet its deliciously high standards for crafting beer. resurgencebrewing.com

With the decline of the steel industry, the city of Hamilton, Ontario has reinvented itself — its growth once again built upon having the best natural harbor on the Great Lakes.

ittsburgh is famous for a lot of things: the Steelers, of course, and its 446 bridges. But the city is perhaps best known for emerging from the ashes of the steel industry collapse, reinventing itself and moving forward to thrive in a new economy. Today, it is impossible to walk the tree-lined streets of Hamilton, Ontario and not hear the comparisons. Canada’s steel town — affectionately known far and wide as “The Hammer” in a nod to its blue-collar roots — also built its fortunes on the steel industry. Two massive metal conglomerates, Stelco and Dofasco, made Hamilton home, attracted by its railway lines, close proximity to major markets in southern Ontario and the northern U.S., and its large, well-protected natural harbor. From the mid-19th to mid-20th century, most of the city either worked for the steel plants or counted plant employees among its primary Clockwise from top: Hamilton and its natural harbor as seen from the Niagara Escarpment; setting up for the Because Beer Craft Beer Festival; children’s murals adorn the Centennial Dock; HarbourWest Marina accommodates many transient boaters.

customers. The city’s prosperity was such that it formed the nucleus of what was once known as the “Golden Horseshoe” — the affluent, horseshoe-shaped region bordering western Lake Ontario from the Niagara River to Toronto. But the decline of the North American steel industry hit Hamilton especially hard. With high unemployment, plummeting property values and much of its downtown core boarded up, Hamilton was not exactly the place to be as the steel industry collapsed. That rough patch, however, marked the beginning of a new era in Hamilton. Dirt-cheap real estate began to attract startup businesses in quest of low overhead costs, as well as commuters and investors who simply couldn’t resist the opportunity to buy large, stately Victorian homes for a fraction of what identical properties sold for in nearby Toronto. These isolated pockets of investment soon began to overlap, bringing new energy and money to the city. Just as that growth began to achieve a critical mass, Hamilton amalgamated with five neighboring municipalities in a move designed to reduce costs. What it did was throw gasoline on a fire, and the city has never looked back.

Hamilton harbor Nowhere is the rebirth of The Hammer more apparent than in and around its harbor, where marine facilities, growing commerce and new development stand in stark contrast to the old steel mills across the bay. The city is easy enough to find by boat — just keep traveling west on Lake Ontario until you run out of water. A long sand causeway separates the harbor from Lake Ontario proper and is bisected by a 300-foot wide canal that allows the passage of both recreational boats and commercial ships. The canal is spanned by a two-lane road bridge with 10 feet of clearance, which opens (to 120 feet) every 30 minutes to allow passage by taller vessels. Just beyond the lift bridge, the much larger James N. Allan Skyway also spans the canal some 125 feet up, carrying the majority of vehicular traffic. Once you clear the canal, you’re in Hamilton Harbour (note the Canadian spelling on your charts) — a miniature lake in its own right, at about four miles long and two miles wide. To your left, the massive Stelco and Dofasco steel mills dominate the horizon. To your immediate right, a large grey

building and Coast Guard docks belonging to the Canada Centre for Inland Waters, one of the world’s leading aquatic research facilities. But you want to keep going straight ahead, where a compass heading of 250 degrees will take you across the harbor and directly to the downtown Hamilton marinas.

Marine facilities The majority of Hamilton’s marine facilities for recreational boaters are located on the city’s western end, in the area between Pier 8 and Bayfront Park. Pier 8, also known as the Centennial Dock, is fairly easy to pick out from the water — look for the apartment buildings on shore and the large building that formally housed the Canada Marine Discovery Centre. Beside it, a warehouse decorated with murals painted by local school children offers another welcoming landmark. If you turn to port as you approach the Centennial Dock and tuck into the basin at its eastern end, you’ll come face-to-face with the imposing grey outline of HMCS Haida, a WWII Canadian Navy destroyer now preserved as a museum ship. Launched in August 1942, Haida served in Britain during the war, where it performed a variety of patrol and escort duties as part of the 10th Destroyer Flotilla. The ship ultimately sank, or contributed to the sinking, of seven German naval vessels and one U-boat, making it Canada’s most decorated naval ship. Reactivated in 1951, HMCS Haida served two further tours of duty during the Korean War. Today, it’s operated as a museum ship by Parks Canada and is open throughout the summer. If you turn to starboard as you approach the Centennial Dock, you will see Harbour-West Marina. This full-service marina offers a friendly, relaxing boating experience, whether you are a seasonal customer or just visiting for the weekend. A stone’s throw further west is Hamilton’s Bayfront Park, which has an excellent double launch ramp for those starting their adventure in town, along with plenty of parking. The marinas are well situated, offering excellent protection from even the worst late season storms, as well as easy access to downtown Hamilton and its abundant attractions. A 20-minute walk up either Bay Street (mainly residential) or James Street North (primarily commercial) takes you into the downtown core. Or, simply call a cab and you’ll be there in three minutes.

The neighborhood surrounding James Street North — locally known as Jamesville — has been a focal point of Hamilton’s renaissance and is enticingly eclectic. You’ll find an intriguing variety of restaurants, galleries, ethnic grocers and stores, with quite literally something for everyone. Hamilton City Centre, at the corner of James and York, is a large downtown mall with an even more diverse range of shops. Next door, the indoor Hamilton Farmers’ Market — established in 1837 — is open year-round, four days a week, and offers farm-fresh produce and specialty products from more than 70 vendors. Continue walking south along James and you’ll soon come to King Street, one of two major east-west arteries that define the downtown core. Located on King Street between James and Bay, the Art Gallery of Hamilton, founded in 1914, is Ontario’s third-largest art gallery, with more than 10,000 works in its permanent collection. Nearly 300,000 people visit the gallery each year, some traveling from as far away as Europe or Asia. Almost as large, the McMaster Museum of Art, located at nearby McMaster University, houses more than 7,000 pieces, including historical, modern and contemporary works. If your taste in art is for the performing kind, you’ll be pleased to learn that Hamilton has quite an active theater scene. Theatre Aquarius, the Players’ Guild of Hamilton and Hamilton Theatre draw the largest crowds, but a growing number of smaller, non-professional companies add to the mix with a range of productions, from classic to quirky. Prefer live music? You can hear everything from Mozart to punk on any given night. The Hamilton Place Theatre, also known as the Ronald V. Joyce Centre for the Performing Arts, is located right next door to the Art Gallery of Hamilton and is widely considered among Ontario’s finest concert facilities. Performers like Tony Bennett, Leonard Cohen and Heart have lauded its spectacular acoustics. FirstOntario Centre, a city block away at Bay and York, is the winter home to the Hamilton Bulldogs, the city’s AHL ice hockey team. But in the summer months the venue is booked solid with concerts, hosting local and international artists like John Mellencamp, Rush, Bruce Springsteen, Britney Spears and the Grateful Dead. Slightly west of the downtown core, the Hess Village neighborhood is where you’ll find many lively bars and

restaurants, as well as a wide range of live entertainment. For the latest information on who’s playing where, pick up a free copy of View, a weekly entertainment guide that’s distributed just about everywhere in downtown Hamilton.

Picture perfect As you walk around town, you can’t help but notice the incredible architecture. It’s one of the few places on earth where you can find bona-fide Victorian, Gothic revival, mid-century modern, art modern and art deco buildings all within a few blocks. Street after street of Victorian walk-ups speak to Hamilton’s affluent past, while inspiring new construction speaks to its future. But by any measure, the Hamilton Go Centre, on Hunter Street, stands as the city’s architectural crown jewel. The only surviving art deco train station in Canada, this pristine structure was built in 1933 and remains in active use today — both as a commuter train station and as a much-in-demand background for television and film production companies. That’s the other thing you see as you walk around town — film shoots. As part of its rebirth, Hamilton has capitalized on its diverse architecture, easy access and favorable exchange rate to become a current Hollywood darling, attracting more than 100 television and film productions each year. Its buildings and streets have provided authentic backgrounds for Hollywood films like “X-Men,” “Gone in 60 Seconds,” “Cinderella Man,” “Hairspray,” “The Incredible Hulk” and “Man of the Year.” Keep your eyes peeled, because who you pass on the street could very well be Angelina Jolie or Kevin Spacey.

Sitting on a dock on the bay Not all of Hamilton’s charms reside in the downtown core, of course; some of the best are located right on the waterfront. The quickest way to learn about the waterfront is to take an informative sightseeing cruise on either the Hamilton Harbour Queen, a 200-passenger tour boat, or the smaller 12-passenger Hamiltonian, both of which dock at Pier 8. Local businessman Albert Samee purchased the Hamilton Harbour Queen from the waterfront trust in April 2015 after learning that scrapyard owners were bidding on her — a fate he couldn’t bear to imagine. After extensive renovations, the beloved cruise boat has become one of the best local attractions in the city.

Most of the Hamilton waterfront is served by a trolley, which takes about 80 minutes to do its loop. Start at Pier 8 near Williams Fresh Café and gain a shoreside look at all the highlights. If you’re itching to stretch your legs after a long spell on the boat, the Hamilton Harbour Waterfront Trail begins at Bayfront Park and continues west for about three miles, offering a scenic and enjoyable route for walking, running, cycling or inline skating. If you’re feeling particularly energetic, this path connects to the Waterfront Trail, an 870-mile multi-use route that follows the Canadian shorelines of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River all the way from Lake St. Clair to Quebec.

The festive type Hamilton is home to a number of different festivals each year, many of them held on or near the waterfront. The Totally British Festival gets things rolling in mid-May, followed by the Hamilton Music Awards and Festival later the same month. The International Guitar Festival takes center stage in late June, followed by the Because Beer Craft Beer Festival in early July. Because one beer is usually followed by another, people in Hamilton feel one beer festival should be followed by another, too. So mark mid-August on your calendar for the Hamilton Beer Festival, followed by Port Days to the waterfront, with free, nautically-themed activities including tall ships, entertainment, food and more. Hamilton’s Festival of Friends, also held in August, is a fun-filled, three-day music festival that draws big-time acts and Lakeside: beach | pier | arts | shopping | dining more than 250,000 visitors. The James Street Supercrawl, held in early September, Bayside: overnight & day slips at lasalle park Marina celebrates the diversity of the Jamesville district with free art, music and more.

With its population of 520,000, Hamilton ranks as Ontario’s third-largest city. While much of downtown Hamilton is easily walkable, some of the city’s attractions will require a short cab ride from the marinas. The Canadian Football Hall of Fame, on Main Street between Bay and McNab, is a popular museum celebrating Canada’s gridiron heritage. If you’re a real fan of the game, visit in late summer when you can catch the Hamilton Tiger Cats in action at a Canadian Football League pro game on Tim Horton’s Field.

WHEN YOU GO... Located at the Hamilton airport, the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum houses one of the world’s finest collections of flying historical aircraft, including one of only two airworthy Lancaster bombers in the world. With a focus on Canadian military aircraft, the museum has 36 planes on display in its permanent collection, plus occasional visiting aircraft. Rides in some planes (including the Lancaster and a B-25) can be arranged with a tax-deductible donation. Stop in at Dundurn Castle where you can experience a guided tour of the 40-room, 18,000 square-foot opulent, neoclassical mansion that was once home to Sir Allan Napier MacNab, former prime minister of Upper Canada. The castle, which is open year-round as an active museum, also offers visitors spectacular views (and scents) of the sprawling kitchen garden. There’s also plenty to see on the north side of the harbor, in the neighboring city of Burlington. On warm summer weekends, the beach strip on the Lake Ontario side of the Skyway Bridge turns into one big raft party. Onshore, at nearby Spencer Smith Park (between the north end of the beach and the Burlington Pier) you’ll find a wide variety of festivals and events almost every weekend of the summer, including the Sound of Music Festival, the Burlington Beer Festival and Canada’s largest Ribfest. When visiting Hamilton, the problem isn’t finding things to do — it’s finding enough time to fit them all in. You can’t see it all in one visit, but one visit is all it takes to appreciate what a special place this is. While the city has had its ups and downs, there can be no denying The Hammer has its own kind of appeal. H

Stunning Point West development straddles two lakes on pristine peninsula.

A

century ago, the sliver of land between Holland’s Lake Macatawa and Lake Michigan was an idyllic summertime getaway. Known as Macatawa Park, vacationers were treated to a picturesque beach setting, views of the historic “Big Red” lighthouse, and the five-story Macatawa Hotel, which offered a bowling alley, dance hall, boat livery and more. This piece of paradise was also reportedly where author L. Frank Baum was inspired for his classic, “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” published in 1900. Baum referred to this part of Holland as “the most original and wonderful place in all the world.” Today, Macatawa Park is home to Point West — a brand-new community of custom, luxury homes with a quarter-mile long private beach and future community pool, private clubhouse and a deep-water marina. “The Point West motto is ‘Two lakes, one community,’ and that sums it up pretty well,” realtor Andrea Crossman says. “Another part of the slogan was ‘Everything old is new again.’ The homes in this community are mirroring the look and feel of the century-old cottages still surrounding this new community.”

LAKELANDBOATING.COM

This exclusive community of 24 — designed by J. Visser and built by Insignia Homes — features classic lines, timeless architecture, two-stall attached garages and white picket fences. The various styles of homes can be fine-tuned to accommodate any style of living, and all take full advantage of the lakeside views. Customizable floor plans include: the Arbor, with two viewing decks; the Bluestone, complete with a bunkroom perfect for a kids retreat; and the Cloverleaf, one of the larger homes. “It’s an area that is very family friendly,” Crossman says. “They are in the flavor of the turn of the century cottages but with modern touches, such as cement fiberboard siding. Some have outdoor kitchens, outdoor gas fireplaces and courtyards/patios.” Everything is right outside your door at Point West. If you want to entertain by a campfire or enjoy a Michigan sunset, step onto your private patio. If you’re feeling a bit more active, take a stroll down the stunning beach, cruise your boat down the Holland Channel and out to the Big Lake, or paddle your kayak around Lake “Mac.” The adventures are endless. ★

CLASSIC CRAFTS by Kate Bush

Not-A-Yot-Yet

PHOTO COURTESY OF RAE ELLEN THYER

The beginning of a Chris-Craft tradition.

This is a photo taken of our granddaughter, Lily, in 2013 at the helm of our 1937 17-foot Chris-Craft runabout, Not-A-Yot-Yet. Lily’s parents wanted to start a tradition of having a photo taken every summer with Lily aboard the Chris-Craft in a different dress or outfit. This is the first photograph taken at age one. We acquired our Chris-Craft in 1977 in Illinois and it was restored completely by Don in the late seventies. It’s entered many antique boat shows since then and was extensively used on Lake Delavan, Wisconsin and along the Chicago lakefront. In 1984, we moved to Northport, Michigan and we still use her each and every summer on the Grand Traverse Bay. — Don and Rae Ellen Thyer, Northport, MI
