Whether you plan to go cruising every weekend this summer or simply enjoy welcoming guests aboard for evening “docktails” at the slip, the new Tiara 50 Coupe is the ultimate choice for entertaining. Tiara really helps bring the outside in with its open, airy, salon-into-aft-deck design, making occupants feel right at home in the cockpit or under the stars. A retractable SureShade and cleverly concealed Kenyon grill aft are nice touches that make this yacht reminiscent of your backyard patio. Tiara snuck all the creature comforts of home aboard the 50 Coupe — and then some!

Celebrating History in the Great Lakes H

istorians have long disputed whether Congress actually signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, even though Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and Benjamin Franklin all later wrote that they had, indeed, signed it on that day. Most historians have concluded that the Declaration was signed nearly a month after its adoption, on August 2, 1776, and not on July 4, as is commonly believed. In a remarkable coincidence, both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, the only signers of the Declaration of Independence later to serve as Presidents of the United States, died on the same day, July 4, 1826, which was the 50th anniversary of the Declaration. Another founding father who became president, James Monroe, also died on July 4, in 1831, thus becoming the third President in a row who passed away on this memorable day. Calvin Coolidge, the 30th President, was born on July 4, 1872, and so far is the only President to have been born on Independence Day. After several revisions, the Declaration of Independence was finally approved on July 4. A day earlier, John Adams wrote to his wife, Abigail: “The second day of July 1776 will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by the solemn acts of devotion to God almighty. It ought to be solemized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.” Adams’ prediction was off by just two days. From the outset, Americans celebrated Independence on July 4, the date shown on the much publicized Declaration of Independence, rather than July

Contributors Elizabeth Altick, Mark Corke, Don Emery, Brian Fett, Mike Harris, Jennifer L. Kilbury, Capt. Marty LaCoste, Capt. Frank Lanier, Bob Peskorse, Gary Reich, Capt. Tom Serio, Bill Stover, Mira Temkin, Colleen H. Troupis, Dave Wallace, Alan Wendt

2, the date the Resolution of Independence was approved in a closed session of Congress. History plays an important role in our July issue in more ways than one. Great Lakes author and historian John Mitchell paints a gripping portrait of the Civil War era in Michigan’s Grand Traverse Bay region in his 2011 book “Grand Traverse: The Civil War Era.” Lakeland Boating editor-at-large Heather Steinberger penned an insightful look into Mitchell’s work and personal background on page 34. Mitchell has written several historical books about Michigan specifically and the Great Lakes in general, and even started a boat show! He wrote the award-winning book “Wood Boats of Leelanau,” and he says the project served as the backdrop for his decision to pursue a 25-ton U.S. Coast Guard master’s license. Mitchell is an interesting guy, and his life’s work is most certainly worth the read. Don’t miss our port of call this month on Grand Haven, Michigan. The only official “Coast Guard City USA” has plenty going on this summer, including the annual Coast Guard Festival July 25-August 3, so you might want to consider adding Grand Haven as a must-stop on this season’s cruising itinerary. Check out all there is to see and do there on page 36. Have a safe and happy 4th. God bless America.

The lengthy search for the 17th century French explorer Rene-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle’s ship, Le Griffon, continues. Last summer, Great Lakes Exploration Group LLC, along with French archaeologists, dove to the depths of Lake Michigan in search of the famous shipwreck. While they did not find the ship as they’d originally hoped, what they did manage to recover was a large, wooden beam that the French archeologists concluded is, in fact, the bowsprit of a vessel submerged for at least a century or more. According to a report by the Associated Press, the timber underwent CT scans and carbon dating and also was examined by U.S. and French experts to determine if it was part of the ship. While two U.S. scientists have argued that the timber is actually part of an underwater fishing apparatus used in the 19th and 20th centuries, Steve Libert of Great Lakes Exploration Group is certain that it is Le Griffon. “Our next step is… to send in divers — that will hopefully yield some information by the end of June,” Libert was quoted as saying. “If not, there is still more probing to do, and we will pick up where left off last year. The biggest thing for me is to find the rest of that ship.” For more information, visit greatlakesexploration.org.

Huron, Ohio Annual festivals showcase classic boats and cars.

S

ituated on the shores of Lake Erie, Huron, Ohio is a lakefront town that is quintessentially Great Lakes — a place that mixes a cozy, small-town feel with former and present hard industry. There’s a small taste of river life, too, with the Huron River meandering south through the city before splitting and winding southwestward. But if you’re anywhere in the vicinity of this great little place come August, its lovingly restored classic boats and cars are woven in two, fun-for-everyone festival events that make Huron a worthy late-summer pit stop.

Huron history Home to about 7,000 residents, Huron lies in Erie County, about 9 miles east of Sandusky and 12 miles west of Vermilion. Cleveland is roughly a one-hour drive, as is Toledo. French Canadians first settled this area in the late 1780s, but it was the protected harbor and port facilities that led to Huron becoming a shipbuilding center in the 1830s. The railroad rolled into town in the 1880s, and eventually Huron became a major commercial fishing center before pollution in Lake Erie all but decimated the lake trout and whiting harvest. The port still receives limestone, iron ore and other cargos from freighters, but it is recreational boating, fishing and tourism that are its lifeblood today. The center point of boating activity in town is Huron Boat Basin, a municipal marina with more than 100 slips, a community amphitheater, transient dockage, showers/ restrooms and a waterside walk — all situated in a protected basin off the Huron River with easy access to Lake Erie. Walking around town is a leisurely joy, and there are local shops and restaurants to explore within walking distance of the waterfront. But here’s a little secret: If you make

plans to arrive in Huron on the right weekends in August, you and your crew can enjoy some entertaining festivals that revolve around boats, cars and family fun.

All classics, all weekend long One of the biggest shindigs of the year in Huron is the All Classics Festival, a fun event that’s hosted by the Lyman Boat Owners Association (LBOA), a national organization almost 900 members strong. The event revolves around land- and water-based displays of lovingly restored classic boats (not just Lymans, by the way) and automobiles of all sorts, but there’s a little bit of something for just about everyone during the three-day weekend. The whole affair runs August 15-17. I know what you’re thinking, but don’t let the “boat owners association” bit scare you. The event is intended to entertain all who attend and is open to the public. “It all started in 1999,” says Michael Lloyd, past commodore and a LBOA board member. “A group of us wanted to have an event that everyone could enjoy — you know, not just one geared directly toward Lyman boat owners — so we made it happen. Today, it’s our biggest event of the year as an organization.” Jeremy Goldstein, owner of Custom Marine Inc. in Sandusky, Ohio, is a professional boat restoration and repair specialist who was among the original group of folks that organized the first show in 1999. Today, he brings along boats that he’s personally restored to display at the show. “It’s really a fun event for everyone, even those who don’t own boats,” Goldstein says. “It’s also a great opportunity for folks to talk with others who own the same boats they do and tap them for ideas about topics such as hull restoration, refinishing and engine rebuilds.” According to Lloyd, there’s a potluck cookout and barbecue for registered owners and participants with brats from Queen City Sausage on Friday, and the rest of the weekend revolves around classic boats and cars, live music, onsite food, kids’ fun, and kicking back and soaking up the charming, park-like Huron Boat Basin scenery. “We generally shoot to have about 100 boats and 50 to 60 cars onsite, and we’re on target to accomplish that this year,” Lloyd says. “These boats and cars are real beauties and just a blast to casually wander around and look at.”

Lloyd also says that there’s live music at the marina amphitheater, so those who stay on their boats during the festival can hang out, relax and enjoy the music right from the comfort of their cockpits. Sounds good to us! For more information on the All Classics Festival for 2014, visit lymanboa.com and click on “Events.”

chris-craft’s command(er) performance While “Chris-Craft Commander Club” might make you think of some sort of military operation or rank, it’s actually a group of fun folks who like to get together and celebrate Chris-Craft’s “Commander,” a line of power cruisers built between 1964 and the 1980s ranging in size from 19 to 60 feet in length. This year, the group is planning a three-day rendezvous with Huron, the Huron Yacht Club and Huron Boat Basin serving as the epicenter for the gathering, to celebrate the Commander Club’s 50th anniversary in 2014. If you’re a Commander owner, or just interested in checking out what

the group hopes will be the largest collection of Chris-Craft Commanders ever assembled in one place, beat feet to Huron the weekend of August 1-3 to get in on the fun. While you don’t have to be a club member to join in on the aforementioned fun, the event does require registration and pre-payment for meal events (walking the docks and visiting the boats and boat owners is free). There’s a Friday dinner featuring burgers and brats, side dishes such as baked beans, coleslaw and potato salad, and a cash bar for those in search of adult beverages. Saturday features a brunch buffet with scrambled eggs, egg casseroles, bacon, sausage, pancakes, and more. Saturday night is a full-on barbecue with chicken, ribs, brisket and all sorts of typical barbecue grill sides. Prices for each meal range from $16 to $36. If you want to just stop on by, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the assembled fleet of Commanders. On Saturday, there’s a tech seminar between 12 and 1 p.m., all-day viewing and boarding of attending Commander boats and live music. Sunday wraps up the event with a final opportunity to tour and board boats until owners start back toward their respective homeports. For more information, or to register and pay for meal events, visit commaderclub.com. While Huron certainly has enough fun on its own to warrant a stop on your cruising itinerary, it’s August when the real fun ratchets up in this Lake Erie town. Time your arrival correctly, and you’ve got all the fixings for a fun-filled weekend. LB

Racine, Wisconsin Reefpoint Brew House offers up tasty brews and delicious views.

n

estled between Milwaukee and Chicago is Reefpoint Brew House in Racine, Wisconsin’s quaint lakeside harbor. Boasting a picturesque view of Lake Michigan, the Root River and the 921-slip Reefpoint Marina, Reefpoint Brew House is a gem, packed with a beer-lovers dream assemblage of brews and barbequed meats. “We’re the only smokehouse in town, and we have the unique opportunity with the views — they’re spectacular,” says Reefpoint Brew House co-owner Tom Landreman. And he’s right; the view is unrivalled. “Our goal is to blend the brews, the views and the foods, and the response has been pretty positive; there is a waiting list every weekend.” Reefpoint Brew House is located right off Main Street, a bustling part of town that hosts a variety of summertime festivals, including First Friday and Great Lakes Brew Fest (gReatlakesbReWfest.com). The restaurant opened just one year ago, on Memorial Day, taking over the old Spinnaker’s restaurant. The place needed some genuine TLC, and the new co-owners, Landreman and his wife, Patti, took on the challenge. “When we got in here, the place needed some character, some charm and some warmth,” Landreman explains. “Everything in here has been redone in some form or fashion.” The outcome of the Landremans’ work is a rustic, log-cabin ambiance with historic Racine photographs adorning the walls, a kaleidoscopic stained-glass window, and massive fireplace anchoring the restaurant. “We have everyone coming in here: Families, boaters and anyone who likes beer, smoked meats, good food and entertainment,” Landreman says.

If you go: Reefpoint Brew House 2 Christopher Columbus Causeway Racine, WI 53403 262-898-7333 ReefpointbReWhouse.com

abundance of brews Not only does Reefpoint have 22 taps, but it also offers close to 100 different bottled craft beers that change regularly. With three large bars, two inside and one on the patio, you can enjoy a cold one from every vantage point. Unlike a traditional brewery, which makes beers in house, Reefpoint is a brew house, so it offers an assorted menu of beers from local breweries and around the world. “Since we are a brew house, we can bring in everybody that’s the best of the best, switch them out, change them up — we’ve got a lot of freedom,” Landreman maintains. Exclusive to the restaurant are two beers by Milwaukee’s Lakefront Brewery including top-seller Grandpa Jacks and Belle City Ale American wheat ale. “Grandpa Jacks is actually named after my father-in-law,” Landreman explains. “He was a second-generation Irishman who just loved having fun. It’s unique because it’s a pilsner, and there really aren’t too many craft pilsners. We get people who are driving in from all over for it now. It’s kind-of grabbing a life of its own, which is really cool.” Need some Grandpa Jacks to go? Beer-lovers can add to their growler collection by picking up one of Reefpoint’s very own growlers, which you can bring back for a discounted refill. While parents are sampling their selection of craft beers, including the crowd-favorite New Glarus Spotted Cow and the Wisconsin Brown and Robust Porter, kids also can delight in a sweet treat — exclusive sodas from the tap. Reefpoint has its own oak barrel-aged root beer called Reefpoint Root Beer, as well as Maraschino Cherry Cola, on draft.

Brews and views are always on tap at Reefpoint Brew House, located in the bay of Reefpoint Marina and one of the latest additions to Racine’s waterfront culinary scene. It’s a must-stop on your summer cruising itinerary.

Expansive lake views While the comprehensive beer collection is sure to capture the taste buds of every beer snob, the wrap-around deck overlooking Lake Michigan will make quite an impression. The patio on the north side of the Brew House overlooks boats in Reefpoint Marina, with Lake Michigan to the east, making it the ideal place to watch Fourth of July fireworks or enjoy live music during the summer. Reefpoint is in the process of adding a full louvered awning over the deck, complete with a heating system. “What we are going to do on the patio is something truly unique in all of the Great Lakes,” Landreman says. “Our goal is to extend the season; that’s why we are doing the awning outside.” This will be the first summer season that Reefpoint will have its own designated “parking” spots for boats in the marina. “They’re setting us up this year with five or six slips for parking for the Brew House,” Landreman said. “We get boaters from all over — it’s pretty cool, since we’re one of only, like, two places on Lake Michigan that you can actually go with your boat and have a beer and a sandwich.”

Barbeque flair It’s true, the beers are remarkable, but let’s not forget about the food. Although the Brew House menu Tom Landreman offers a wide variety of fare, including steak, seafood and sandwiches, this summer it plans to reveal a new menu that focuses on barbeque dishes. “We’re going to bring our smoking to the forefront — Business is quite literally “hopping” at Racine’s we do a really good job with it,” Landreman says. “We Reefpoint Brew House. Patrons can enjoy a plethora of beers on tap, bottled craft beers from around the globe worked with barbeque pit master Matthew Whiteford and a smorgasbord of barbeque meats, courtesy of a (lovEyourBBq.com) on the menu, and want to celebrate him.” legendary pit master. The new, stand-alone barbeque menu will feature items like barbeque nachos and barbeque tots, as well as a burger with brisket and Cajun shrimp tacos. Reefpoint Brew House makes a variety of barbeque sauces in house, including Jack Daniels, Cajun, sweet chili and root beer sauces. “I figured we’d have the dirtiest boats on the lake,” Landreman jokes. “You’ll have boaters saying, ‘I could clean my boat and smell that, or I could go up and have a beer… I think the boat can wait!’” So for a tasty meal, flight of beer, the best views on Lake Michigan and maybe even a growler souvenir, Reefpoint Brew House is a must-stop on your summer itinerary. “We’re slowly beginning to be the talk of the lake,” Landreman claims. “We’ve had people come from Indiana, from all around the lake, and say, ‘Our friends told us we had to stop here.’” LB Boaters looking to beat the heat this summer can swing by the Brew House for any number of cold ones on draft. Lighting the Way New trends in decorative LED lighting help illuminate today’s boats.

T

oday’s onboard lighting has progressed well beyond the energy savings touted by the initial introduction of LEDs (light-emitting diodes) in the marine industry. From attracting fish to enabling your boat to “float on a cushion of light,” today’s LED lighting options offer a number of benefits aside from simply enabling you to see. Here’s a look at some of the latest innovations in lighting, both above and below the waterline.

Lumishore Designed for those who prefer the integrity of a thru-hull LED light fitting and the convenience of a removable LED array that can be serviced from inside the boat, Lumishore’s TIX301 (Lumishore.com) offers a compact, economically priced unit with impressive performance. At 4,670 fixture lumens, the TIX 301 is up to 50 percent more powerful than the brightest of comparable thru-hull LED lights (including Xenon and HID offerings). “The TIX301’s serviceability without hauling the boat offers a tremendous convenience to our customers,” says Keith Wansley, Lumishore USA president. Key features include a low profile, compact flush-fit housing for increased mounting options; and integrated driver for space savings in tight areas and ease of installation. Producing a wide, 110-degree light beam, the TIX301 also incorporates over voltage/current, reverse polarity, soft start and proprietary thermal rollback (ATRB), which protects both the light and boat’s electrical system. Available in white, blue or green, the TIX 301 is suitable for use aboard almost any size craft. Want the benefits of the TIX301, but crave the ability to change its colors? Check out Lumishore’s TIX601 Interchangeable LED Array. In addition to the hull integrity and serviceability found in the TIX301, the TIX601 series is available in two versions: Color Change with unlimited colors, or Single Color (white or blue). For those wanting to turn night into day, Lumishore claims its new THX601 and THX1201 Single Color Thru-Hull

Underwater Lighting Systems are the brightest underwater LED lights on the market. The THX601 emits 9,790 fixture lumens, while the THX1201 pumps out 16,010 fixture lumens, both with a wide, 110-degree light beam. Available in blue or white (green and other colors are available as special orders), the THX601 and THX1201 rival superyacht light output at an affordable price.

hurley marine Do you like underwater lighting, but not the idea of drilling holes in your boat? The Hurley Drain Plug Light™ (hurLeymarine.com) is designed to screw into your garboard drain, eliminating the need for an additional hole. Constructed of corrosion-free polyvinyl chloride, the Drain Plug Light works great as a stand-alone transom light, baitwell illuminator, dock light, or as a complement to existing underwater lights. Compatible with 12- or 24-volt systems, it features a high intensity, 10-watt LED Drain Plug Light and revolutionary glass convex lens, which produces a 75-degree beam spread. The unit is fully self-contained and includes an overheat sensor, as well as low and high voltage shutdowns. Designed with a unique waterSea-Vue cooling system (for greater efficiency and an ultra-long service life), the light also can be removed from its bracket and used as a flush-mounted light. Also from Hurley is its LED Sea-Vue®, which was created for boat owners seeking to dramatically illuminate the water behind their boat with minimal power draw. With many of the design benefits featured in the Drain Plug Light (rugged design, water-cooling system, etc.) all of the electronics are integrated into a compact, watertight housing, which requires only a 1/4" hole through the transom above the waterline for the power cable. The Sea-Vue® light also features Hurley’s glass convex lens

and boasts four high intensity, 10-watt LED arrays in a thermally conductive, corrosion-free plastic housing. Available in white, blue, green or red, Sea-Vue® lights are perfect for boat owners wanting a high intensity LED surface mount or one that easily mounts to trim tabs. They’re also stackable when combined with Hurley’s trim tab brackets, which means you can install multiple-colored units.

IMTRA New lighting innovations aren’t limited to below-the-waterline applications. IMTRA’s Valencia and Majorca LED courtesy lights (IMTRA.coM) are designed to illuminate walkways and steps on large vessels and megayachts. “We are proud to offer two beautifully designed courtesy lights that are perfectly suited for large boats and megayachts,” says Colby Chevalier, lighting sales director for IMTRA. “The Valencia and Majorca smart courtesy lights are the largest we offer, and are ultra-efficient in both performance and installation. They are the perfect complement to our extensive selection of LED solutions and are designed to provide the right illumination and a pleasing color hue, all in a style to match any boat décor.” The energy-saving LED fixtures feature an indirect LED light source that eliminates hot spots and glare, are surface-mounted for ultimate installation convenience, and have a smooth, low-profile design with curved surfaces to prevent them from catching on shoes and clothing. Crafted of marine-grade stainless steel, Valencia and Majorca are constructed to withstand rigors of the marine environment, whether used for interior or exterior illumination. They feature a watertight O-ring seal to keep internal electronics protected and dry, even under high-pressure washing or severe wave action. Equipped with an indirect LED light source that’s angled downward, hidden from direct view and shielded by a frosted lens, the light’s unique design elements allow for soft illumination and anti-glare — even when installed in stair rises that climb to eye level or higher. operation summaries Learning lessons the hard way in the U.S. and Canada. 70-foot Yacht Catches Fire 1 Jacksonville, Florida — April 2 Belle Amie was 50 miles offshore near Fernandina Beach when she caught fire with five passengers on board. The U.S. Coast Guard, along with the 85-foot Coast Guard Cutter Diamondback, arrived on scene within 2 hours. By that time, passengers had extinguished the fire and donned life jackets, but the boat had lost all power and began taking on water. Helicopters brought pumps to remove the water, and USCG towed the yacht back to shore. Lesson Learned: Check, and then double-check, that you have all necessary safety equipment on board before cruising — especially a fire extinguisher. Report by USCGNEWS.COM

Seattle, Washington — May 8 The last thing you want to worry about while enjoying a fun-filled day of tubing is for your boat to fail you. But for one unfortunate group of nine adults in Seattle, that’s exactly what happened. The boat was overloaded with passengers and began taking on water. A couple passed by the sinking boat and helped the nine passengers safely disembark. That’s when they dropped the bomb: Only half of the passengers knew how to swim! The boat eventually sank in the 50-degree lake. This crew really lucked out, as no one was injured. Lesson Learned: Don’t ignore capacity ratings on your boat... and knowing how to swim is non-negotiable. Report by KIROTV.COM

Luckily, a nearby fisherman saw the boat drifting away. He took his fishing pole and cast it, amazingly catching a fishing line on the drifting boat. Meanwhile, two men tied a cooler to a rope as a makeshift flotation device and threw it to the submerged man. He was later taken to the hospital with no serious injuries. Lesson Learned: Innovation saves lives. Report by SFGATE.COM

Good sam, UsCG rescue Three Destin, Florida — April 9 As a 22-foot center console carrying three passengers began to capsize near East Pass, a Good Samaritan arrived and helped two male passengers to safety. USCG arrived shortly thereafter with a 45-foot Response Boat to rescue the third boater, a female. The conditions were described as dangerous, with 3- to 4-foot seas, incoming tide, shallow waters and 15- to 20-knot winds. “Because these mariners had their required safety gear and were wearing their life jackets, we were able to provide timely assistance and avoid a worse outcome,” says Lt. Junior Grade Bradley Parker of Coast Guard Sector Mobile. Lesson Learned: Life jackets are life-savers. Report by USCGNEWS.COM

ask the expert | by Elizabeth Altick

Elevate Your Electronics Raymarine electronics expert Jim McGowan explains how easy it is to upgrade your boat’s dashboard. LB: With constant advances in electronics and competitive pricing, when is the best time to replace and upgrade your equipment? McGowan: Electronics dealers and manufacturers tend to run specials and promotions during boat show season, but typically they offer deals that are just as lucrative in the off-season, too. Really, there is no bad time to buy anymore.

LB: Do owners have to undertake a complete refit of the helm? McGowan: One of the nicest things about the latest marine electronics is their upgradeability. For example, Raymarine’s line of multifunction displays (MFD) receive quarterly software updates. We recently released LightHouse II version 10 that adds major new features and is compatible with displays dating back to 2011.

bottom-view. Our Evolution autopilots have been a hit, too. New HydroBalance software makes it possible to fit autopilots on small outboard powerboats. They start at less than $1,500.

LB: How can one reduce dashboard clutter? McGowan: There are several ways to achieve a sleek look. Every Raymarine MFD supports NMEA2000 networking, displaying vital information from engines, generators, trim tabs and entertainment components. You can eliminate lots of smaller displays, dials and gauges and incorporate them into the touch screen display. Look at displays and accessories with built-in capabilities or black-box designs. Several of our MFDs feature built-in GPS and sonar. Consider a black-box VHF radio system like our Ray260. Its transceiver box is mounted out of sight, and the only components at the helm are its handset and a remote-mountable loudspeaker.

LB: How difficult is it to install new electronics? McGowan: Some products, like our Dragonfly Sonar-GPS, are an easy DIY project. Other systems can be more difficult, like hydraulic autopilots. The quality of the installation will impact the level of satisfaction. Many manufacturers offer enhanced warranty coverage of professionally installed systems.

LB: How does an owner research new products?

LB: What is the cost of a complete overhaul?

McGowan: There’s great information on websites, blogs and forums. Word-of-mouth goes a long way, too. A visit to a boat show or local electronics dealer gives you a chance to see the products and have questions answered by someone knowledgeable on site.

McGowan: Cost varies widely. Adding a Dragonfly-7 (MSRP $899) to a small fishing boat can be an extreme makeover. On the other hand, it’s possible to spend upwards of $30,000 on a multi-screen, multi-station system for a larger boat.

LB: What should a boater consider when choosing equipment? McGowan: The number-one consideration is what size MFD will fit in the desired location, followed by what sensors you’ll want. Think about your boating activities. Avid fisherman might want a more powerful sonar. If you’re venturing offshore, radar is a nice-to-have item. Boaters who frequently navigate alone or short-handed typically consider an autopilot essential.

LB: Do mobile devices fit into the overall electronics picture? McGowan: Absolutely. Every Raymarine MFD has standard Wi-Fi and Bluetooth networking and free apps for Apple and Android devices. The Wi-Fi also can be used to synchronize navigation data. You even can get Navionics chart updates through your smartphone and the MFD’s Wi-Fi.

LB: What are the latest electronics trends? McGowan: In addition to our CHIRP DownVision and autopilots, thermal night-vision cameras are popular. Pricing starts at $1,999. Fixed-mount cameras for collision avoidance are around $3,499. A few years ago, you couldn’t find anything for less than $7,000. Cool, Calm and Collected Air conditioning helps keep things comfortable on board.

E

ven on the hottest summer afternoon while the boat’s underway, we have a breeze to help keep us cool. But when we pull into the dock or pick up a mooring, temperatures inside the cabin can swiftly rise to uncomfortable levels. It’s a fact that most boats spend more time at the dock then they do underway, and with this in mind it’s hard to beat the level of comfort offered by onboard air conditioning on a sticky, humid day.

AC 101 The basic functioning of an air conditioner is relatively simple to explain. A closed system of coils contains a refrigerant gas. The gas is compressed, which turns it into a liquid. The liquid then flows through what looks like a series of tubes called an evaporator, where the liquid is allowed to expand, returning it to gaseous state. At the same time, warm air from the cabin is blown across the evaporator, which absorbs heat. The now-warm gas transfers its heat to the water, which is being pumped through a heat exchanger, and it’s this water that you will often see spouting out the sides of boats in the marina. One side benefit of an air conditioner is that it acts as a dehumidifier, as cool air contains less moisture. This means that the cool air in the cabin will have a lower relative humidity than the warmer air outside.

Costs of cool The comfort of air conditioning doesn’t come cheap, not least of which is the expense of purchasing the AC unit itself. Electricity operating costs also must be taken into account. Air conditioners should be operated from 120 volts, and this means you either need shore power available or have a generator on board the boat for those times you can’t plug in on the dock. On larger boats, it’s not uncommon to have two or more air conditioners; one in the forward cabin, another in the salon and a third in the aft master, perhaps. Each of these zones can be controlled independently of one other, and even turned off completely, if desired. The output of air conditioners is measured in BTUs, which stands for “British Thermal Units.” If you already have an AC unit on you boat, examine it for the placard stating its output: 12000 BTU, 16000 BTU, etc. The bigger the number, the larger the area that the unit is capable of cooling. Keep in mind, however, that correctly sizing a unit for the space it’s intended to cool is a job for the experts. Several factors determine the unit output that you need: The size of the boat; the area to be cooled; the amount of windows you

have in the boat (as this will increase the solar gain from the sun); and where the AC unit will be placed, among others. All these considerations have bearing on the size/BTU output of the AC unit required. A unit that’s too small will work constantly and may not be able to draw the temperature down to the desired level, while a unit that’s too large will constantly cycle on and off, using more power than a smaller, more appropriately sized unit, and will prematurely wear out from the continuous on-off cycling.

Installing air conditioning on board is a great way to stay cool and comfortable during the summer months, but make certain to follow basic safety protocol while the system is running.

AC installs I’ve often been asked if installing an air conditioner is a DIY job. The short answer is “perhaps.” It requires skill and competence, and there are scads of things that can go wrong. Installing an air conditioner on an older boat can be fraught with difficulty. It’s not that it can’t be done; it’s just that installing the unit itself may actually be the easy part. Plumbing and duct work also needs installing, and this may require alterations to joinery and cabinets, which are typically best left to a skilled woodworker. You also may find that you need to upgrade your onboard electrical service, too, and this is definitely a job for a skilled marine electrician. Remember: Air conditioning is not the same as ventilation. Air conditioners simply circulate and chill the air that’s already inside the boat; they do not introduce fresh air from outside. I’ve lost count of the number of times that I’ve passed by the marina only to see boats locked up tight for weeks on end, nobody on board, and water spouting out of the boat’s side — an obvious sign that the AC is running. Not only are these owners paying for the electricity to keep the air conditioning operating, but it also means that the boat’s water pumps are constantly running. If one of the hoses should split, the boat could ultimately sink, as the pump would fill the bilge with water. If fresh air is what you’re after, it’s a far better idea to keep the boat smelling sweet by cracking a hatch, opening a vent or window (or two), and letting some air blow through the boat. A good rule of thumb is to turn the AC on only when you need it — when you’re actually on board the boat. It’s not only more cost effective, but safer, too. LB

AC installation might be a DIY job, but if you have any doubts about your abilities, it’s best to enlist the help of a professional.

Aqua Patio 240 CB T

Extending your home patio to the water.

he Aqua Patio name is interesting. It connotes that you can have the creature comforts of your home patio on your boat. Case in point: The Aqua Patio 240 CB. A true walk-through from stem to stern, the 240 CB has ample forward deep-seating with a wide center walkway. Seat bottoms conceal storage and cooler spaces. A forward drop-and-lock gate (no latches) allows for access to the extended deck for anchor duty or securing a line. Mid-ship is the starboard helm station. Everyone will want a turn to drive, thanks to the captain’s chair complete with thick padding, armrests and side bolsters. Adding flare to function is the molded dash. Tinted windscreen, hydraulic tilt steering (optional), instruments mounted at dash top for good visibility, and side rows of rocker switches make for a smart layout. Across from the helm is an L-shaped settee with twopedestal table and a pop-up privacy/changing room. Go from swimsuit to casual clothes without employing the old “towel wrap-around” trick. Aft is the pub-style center bar (CB). It incorporates a full-sized table with four pedestal stools and footrests. An aft bar with cup/wine glass holders keeps beverages within reach. To starboard is a refreshment center with ample counter space, drawer and cabinet, sink and Magma

oston Whaler, a name synonymous with well-crafted, unsinkable boats, has a new entry in its armada: The 210 Dauntless. Built solid to get to and from the fishing grounds with ease and speed and equally comfortable for a weekend cruise, the 210 Dauntless is the perfect “all-around” boat. For comfort, head to the bow. The sun pad is large enough for two or more to share. Two aft cushions rise to create a backrest, making this sun lounge a cool vantage point while out cruising. Forward is the anchor locker and in-deck storage compartment. Simply remove the pads, and this area becomes a usable casting platform. Additional seating is located in front of the helm, and across the transom in a fold-up, padded bench seat. The center console helm boasts a reversible seat for forward or aft viewing, with storage for a carry-on cooler below. And the dash has a broad mounting surface for installation of choice electronics: SmartCraft deluxe gauges, rocker switches, 12-volt outlet, single-lever throttle control, and tilt steering round it out. Grab rails are all around, and a portable head is tucked inside the console.

Boston Whaler 210 Dauntless Going fishing? The 210 has rod holders everywhere (up forward, T-top, helm seat and transom). With the aft seat folded, the area doubles as a full-width casting platform. A trolling motor panel (optional) lays flat along the forward gunnel, and a fishbox is neatly stashed under the forward seat. An optional, 25-gallon livewell can be installed beneath the helm seat. Power is supplied by a 200 XL L4 DTS Mercury Verado four-stroke engine, capable of reaching a respectable 45 mph (39 knots) at WOT. A new member in the Dauntless line, the 210 boasts the classic Whaler pedigree. “The new Dauntless family is the embodiment of a clever transformation,” says Jeff Vaughn, Boston Whaler’s vice president of sales, marketing and customer service. “The Dauntless lineup has long been appreciated for its ability to multitask. It’s now better equipped than ever to do it all — to inspire your own family’s next chapter.” It’s evident that the 210 was built as a “jack of all trades,” so to speak. Tack on options such as bow table, trim tabs, freshwater shower (with 12-gallon tank), ski pylon, Activity Tower (poling platform, ski rack and pylon), hull colors or trailer, and you’re onto something all-around unique. pparently, size does matter at Viking Yachts. From the production sheds at the company’s New Gretna, New Jersey facility comes the brand new 92 Enclosed Bridge Convertible. The powers-that-be at Viking have filled the 70and 80-foot sportfish needs and are going where they haven’t ventured before with this latest behemoth. The 92 EB is Viking’s largest and boldest offering yet. Inside, palatial amenities are de rigueur for this-sized yacht. The salon boasts split sofas and coffee tables, barrel chairs and recessed TV. To port is a dining table with room for eight, as well as seating for five at the galley nook to starboard. Wrap-around counter space in the galley offers plenty of elbow room for preparing and serving the day’s catch. A forward day head and aft staircase to the bridge also are found in the cavernous salon, courtesy of the boat’s 23-foot beam. Standard accommodations include six staterooms. Mid-ship has a full-beam master with his/her heads and central shower. Forward is the VIP with centerline berth. In between are three more rooms, with queen, full and twin layouts. An aft stateroom can be reserved for extra guests or crew quarters.

Viking 92 Enclosed Bridge Topping the 92 EB is the enclosed bridge, with a forward centerline helm flanked by guest bench seats. Aft is a starboard table/seat combo and L-shaped settee with table nestled in the port corner. Step outside on the aft bridge deck and there’s another helm station (for keeping tabs on the big fight), seating and staircase down to the cockpit. Twin mezzanine seating will keep anglers and spectators alike right in the action, as Viking has made the “business end” of the 92 EB as comfortable as it is functional. “The amazing new 92 has amenities like you’d expect on a full-blown motoryacht,” says Greg Krueger, president of Jefferson Beach Yacht Sales headquartered in St. Clair Shores, Michigan (jBys.com; 866-490-5297). “It is the only convertible on the market that offers a covered aft deck lounge and table area, with a cockpit that can wrestle any trophy game fish from around the world. With top speeds exceeding 35 knots, the introduction of Viking’s new flagship marks its 50th anniversary like a gold crown. It doesn’t get any better.” Check out Viking’s website for a neat flip book that shows the 92s build process and offers full specs, features and highlights. Delivery timeframe for the groundbreaking (and wave busting) Viking 92 EB is Fall 2014. LB

on yachts, holding true to a course required one eye on the compass and a fairly good understanding of the effects of wind and tide. Tiara Yachts of Holland, Michigan followed that time-honored method of navigation in meticulously examining every detail of a changing marketplace for boats and yachts. Holding on to tradition in craftsmanship and seakeeping while pushing the styling envelope with calculated accuracy, Tiara’s latest edition, the 50 Coupe, boasts a strong and sleek profile that looks and feels like a luxury sports car. What really stands out is how much this boat appeals to both husband and wife, with emphasis on the latter, who in today’s market, “holds the ultimate veto in the purchasing equation,” according to Rick Venner, Tiara brand manager for Walstrom Marine in Harbor Springs, Michigan.

Perhaps you’ve noticed the trend towards moving the galley up and closer to the center of entertainment. While a couple may both be accomplished “foodies,” neither wants to be a galley slave and miss out on the conversation while entertaining guests. By carefully studying the competition, listening to existing customers and taking a design cue from influencers like Apple, luxury automobiles, and home designers, Tiara has refined its approach to make the 50 Coupe a social magnet.

Welcome aboard The optional ($58,100) and rather large Nautical Structures hydraulic swim platform serves many purposes. From lowering and retrieving a personal watercraft or tender to making entry into the water easier for arthritic bones that find boarding ladders impossible, our tour of ingenuity and clever space usage begins here. Just forward of the platform is a single electric door hinged at the top that serves as a garage. Large enough for your basic water toys, with room for every mop, brush and bucket you can bring along, when closed it creates a nearly beam-wide counter top. This serves as a food prep area next to the recessed stainless Kenyon electric grill, with storage drawers below. The grill is an excellent example of every component on this boat hand selected to eliminate traditional hassles. Kenyon grills don’t smoke or flair up, and the heat is evenly spread over the entire non-stick cooking surface. Two quick steps up from the swim platform the full vision of Tiara’s indoor/outdoor living concept unfolds. Fitted against the transom, a molded-in, forward facing lounge bows outward adding dimension. Sun treated fabrics are a welcome break from traditional vinyl aft seating. For cocktails, the table stays lowered. For dining, a leaf folds out to double surface space; simply push a button, and the table raises up. Portable seats, which stow under the table, provide additional seating and masquerade as ottomans. Tucked into the forward corner of the cockpit on each side and against the bulkhead is an aft-facing chair. A sisal seagrass snap-in mat covers the traditional fiberglass sole, while adding a classy decorator’s touch. This proved to be the most popular gathering point on the yacht during our test run from SkipperBud’s North Point in Winthrop Harbor, Illinois. Passengers soaked up the first rays of spring and enjoyed the early season, Caribbean-like blue color of Lake Michigan. All reported a dry ride free of engine noise, making conversation an art — not a shouting match.

Salon and helm Solid, sliding glass doors reveal a salon and helm station bathed in natural light. With 360-degree panoramic views, the 50 Coupe is all about embracing the outside and bringing it inside. The galley has a clean, unobtrusive flow to maximize the depth perception of the entire salon. Royal Gold, Michelangelo or Bianco Carrera quartz galley countertops line both sides of the galley. To starboard, our model included side-by-side, two-drawer Isotherm refrigerator freezers, with storage cabinets overhead and a wine cooler. Below the port side countertop cutout is a concealed Kenyon three-burner Mediterranean ceramic cooktop, microwave/convection oven, stainless sink, Moen decorator style faucet and ($780) optional garbage disposal. A thin, yet secure storage drawer just below the counter holds the countertop cutouts when in use. Keeping an eye on tradition, Tiara is using a blend of teak and walnut coloring in the cabinetry and cockpit sole. Portside an Ultraleather sofa is well positioned to serve as another gathering point for guests or watching a movie on the 40-inch flat screen, cleverly concealed when not in use and mounted on a hi-lo actuator. Somewhat unique is the companion seat across from the helm. Rather than swivel, both the chair and bolster slide forward or backward, providing another seat for dinner or one mighty comfortable view of the horizon.

Toy STore (a.k.a. The helm) Innovation is more than a buzz word for marine dealers. In a world full of disruptive technology, where smartphones double as cameras, GPS, e-mail and game controllers, not to mention good, old-fashioned telephones, the helm has become an electronic temple. Volvo and Garmin teamed up with Tiara to create what’s known as a Glass Cockpit. Two large touch screens display everything you’d ever want to know about the onboard systems, navigation… right down to who has the best burger on the Great Lakes. Gone are all gauges and dials. If you can operate an iPad, you can program the Glass Cockpit to any number of presets to customize the driving experience. Add a live feed of video from the engine room, or the optional aft camera to extend the view without having to turn your head. The Glass Cockpit packs so many features into stunning graphics that were this the command bridge of the Starship Enterprise, Captain Kirk

could lay off half the staff and run everything from the comfort of his Stidd captain’s chair. When it came time to put the 50 Coupe through her paces, we fired up the stable of horses below deck. Two Volvo IPSII 950 pods producing 725 hp responded nicely as I put the yacht through hole shots, hard turns, into a 3-foot chop, and then enjoyed the smooth comfort home of a following sea. Tiara modeled this hull from the 4800 Convertible, one of its most successful and well-proven bottoms. Officially, the boat tops out at 39 mph, turning 2500-plus rpm. Cruise is optimum at 2100 rpm for a speed around 28 to 29 mph. Turns take a second or two before this 42,000-pound yacht starts to bite and heel. The website image I studied before the test drive projected a sports car-like experience. I was not disappointed. This was effortless fun and the “coupe” moniker is well deserved. The 50 Coupe is equipped with the newest Volvo IPS with Joystick Plus control. Intuitive and responsive, a simple twist and turn forward, sideways or in reverse erases docking fear. “Anti-anxiety docking is the big thing,” notes Michael Porreca, general manager for SkipperBud’s North Point. Our host for the day says boating newbies are in fact more adept with the joystick than seasoned boaters, who learned handling with twin throttles and gear shifters.

Beauty and the rest Offered in a two- or three-stateroom configuration, Tiara’s 50 Coupe packs innovation, tradition and Chilewich wall covering with a contemporary appeal, yet luxurious elegance for the owner and special overnight guests to enjoy. Amidships is the master, an oversized queen-size berth with Tiara’s signature storage concealed in the base. Large windows create an airy atmosphere, not to mention great views. A small porthole opens on both windows to allow for cross ventilation on comfortable nights. The obligatory TV and deep closet that includes generous vertical space for

hanging that “little black dress” are well suited for a weekend or weeklong cruise. The enclosed shower in the master bath fit my plus size nicely. Across the companionway is an almost identical day head with private entrance to the forward stateroom. Unlike many second staterooms that offer a walkaround pedestal bed, Tiara crafted two twin-size mattresses that display in a V-shape. With the simple release of a locking pin, the two sides glide together for matrimonial bliss, or just as quickly separate two “make him stay on his side of the bed” whiny children, once again leading to matrimonial bliss. Our two-stateroom test boat included a stackable washer and dryer/utility room in place of the third stateroom that is normally furnished with two bunkbeds. (Note: Walstrom Marine is carrying the three-stateroom model among its current inventory).

On the hOrizOn While some companies are resistant to change in favor of maintaining the status quo, that was not the overriding philosophy at Tiara when it came to developing the 50 Coupe. The Slikkers family, owners of Tiara parent company S2 Yachts, which also manufactures Pursuit Boats, broke rank with tradition on this boat and tried to create something new based heavily on Tiara owner feedback. “Change is always difficult,” admits Tiara marketing director David Glenn. “We took our time developing the 50 Coupe concept and had confidence moving forward to address what the market is looking for. The fairly level floor plan from outside to the salon is a good example of incorporating customer input that previous models had too many stairs and levels, but we kept the traditional lines that are distinctly Tiara.” With a new 44 Coupe next on the drawing board, Tiara is becoming quite progressive and offering a series of yachts that are so fun to drive, you’ll be coaxed to leave the marina more often. Office on Board Expert advice for establishing a fully functional “floating workspace” aboard your boat. by dan marchetto

W

orking remotely has become increasingly popular. More and more people are conducting their dayto-day business activities outside of a traditional office, and boaters are no exception. Mobile technology has made it easier than ever to take business conversations out of the home office and on the road — or even the water, for that matter. Because of my background in sound and conferencing technology, I’m often asked, “How can I incorporate my business communications needs into a boating environment?” There are some high-tech — and rather expensive — options for those who venture offshore for extended periods of time, or for individuals with unlimited budgets. But most of the questions I field pertain to getting work done while in the slip or on the hook, and in a cost-effective manner. People want to be able to make and receive audio and video calls that let them look good, sound good, be hands- and headset-free, and accomplish all of the above without the “clipping” associated with speaker and cell phones. It sounds complicated and expensive, but it isn’t. Let’s consider the necessary equipment components for a quality on-board office.

Phone Probably the most critical component of any floating office is what’s known as a full duplex conference phone with built-in echo cancellation. Remember:

32

LAKELANDBOATING.COM

| july 2014

You can have a call without video, but a call without audio isn’t a call at all. The ideal phone can connect via USB to your computer and also to your cell phone. The term “full duplex” means that the microphone and speaker can be on at the same time, eliminating the “clipping” often associated with speakerphones. Unfortunately, having an open mic and open speaker creates its own set of issues, since the audio that comes out of the speaker is picked up by the mic and retransmitted to the far end. The person or persons at the other end hear their voices come back to them in the form of an echo. An echo canceller (EC) takes the audio coming out of your speakers from the far end and prevents it from being sent back out. Since the EC is only looking to cancel what comes out of your speaker, your voice is allowed to pass through. Tip: If you hear your voice coming back to you, it’s almost always coming from someone at the other end who does not have EC on his or her device. Find out where the problem is coming from by asking the person(s) on the other end of the line to mute their mics one at a time; when you don’t hear your voice come back to you when you speak, you’ve found the culprit. At that point ask that individual to keep his or her mic muted until they need to speak. Everyone will be happier for it. I prefer the Phoenix Duet Executive. It connects to my laptop and iPhone or Android and also allows me to bridge

a phone call into my video call. Retail price for the Phoenix is around $150, and it makes me sound more professional than I really am.

Camera/Video Personally, I don’t like using my built-in laptop camera. I prefer an external camera, such as a Logitech C920. I feel it’s a higher quality camera, and I can position it any way I like to best work in the desired situation. Retail price for the C920 is about $70. When it comes to video, there are many different types of video conferencing systems available out there. For onboard use, you ideally want a software-based system. This ensures there’s no bulky hardware to store in a boat’s oh-solimited storage areas. With these electronic systems, all of the functionality resides on your computer or tablet. If you happen to work for an organization that has video conferencing capabilities in-house, make sure your software version is either made by the same manufacturer or is compatible with what your office uses. Your IT folks can help set you up and make certain you purchase the appropriate system. If your company requires video conferencing, you may want to consider IOCOM. It’s a powerful collaborative tool that allows for unlimited video streams,

Tips for conducting business on board n Never assume the video capabilities of your mobile phone are a good substitute for a computer or tablet. If that’s all you have, make it an audio-only call. Cell phone video is fine for airports, parking lots and “nothing else is available” meetings, but not for prepared business discussions. It’s always too jittery and, most of the time, people find themselves looking up your nostrils. n If you’re using a tablet for video conferencing, be sure to set it in a stand to keep it stable and vertical. n Video conferencing is supposed to be the next-closest thing to being on the other side of the table from your participants. Remember: When you look across the table, you are looking directly across — not down at — the table. Eye contact is everything. The same applies in a video conference. Make sure your camera is at eye level and just above the talking heads on your screen. No one wants to see you looking down on him or her, nor do they want to see your ceiling. If you’re using the built-in laptop camera, prop the laptop up on some books and copies of Lakeland screen- and file-sharing, IM, recording, and a host of other capabilities. It’s also able to talk with older legacy room systems, such as Polycom, making it a versatile piece of software. But what if you’re an independent? Then it makes good sense to consider something more ubiquitous, like Skype. It’s not nearly as powerful as IOCOM, but everybody knows about it, and you can conduct basic, single-stream video calls with your team or clients.

Environment Now it’s time to discuss the environment. Let’s face it: If you own a cruising boat, you’re in a fairly exclusive club and may not want everyone to know about (or see) your success. I can relay a short story about this. Many years ago, my father, who headed up a large group of engineers, moved to a new building. His computer budget was $35 million dollars. Not long after the computers were delivered, the salesman who sold him the computers started showing up to the office in a Rolls Royce. That didn’t sit well with many of the employees at my dad’s company, and eventually it got back to the salesman. He still owned the Rolls Royce, but he showed up to work in a Chevy. The moral of the story: Be happy with your success, but don’t flaunt it for others.

With that in mind, it’s important to remember you are conducting business aboard your boat, and therefore you need to portray a business-like environment. Individuals on the other end of your video calls don’t want to see the harbor, your helm, the head, your stateroom or any other part of the boat in the background that may detract from the meeting. You need to position yourself and your camera in such a way that business colleagues see clean, uncluttered walls, whether fabric, teak or cherry wood. If windows cannot be avoided in the background, make sure the curtains or blinds are closed. Follow the same attire guidelines that you would if you were in the office (business casual, for example). I like to go with collared, button-down shirts, and, of course, no sunglasses. Since callers are unlikely to see much below your shirt pockets, gym shorts and flip flops are perfectly acceptable and will have you smiling all the way through the meeting.

Etiquette Etiquette is as important for audio-only calls as it is for video calls. Sounds or, more importantly, lack thereof, are critical to productive business meetings. Marine radios must be turned off. Halyards must be silenced, and creaking wooden hulls are taboo. And forget the “It’s five

Boating to get it back to eye level. — D.M. About the Author Dan Marchetto has three decades of experience in the audio and video conferencing industry. He’s been an avid boater for more than 40 years and makes his boating home on Lake Michigan at Reefpoint Marina in Racine, Wisconsin. o’clock somewhere” mentality. Having Jimmy Buffett or Bob Marley playing in the background is not acceptable while conducting business on board. Making audio call calls from outside the cabin sets yourself up for others issues, such as hearing the fog horn constantly going off in the background, or your dock mate asking you if you want a Piña Colada or Bahama Mama this time. A trick I use to mask exterior noise from inside the cabin is to set my AC or heater blowers to constantly run on low. It mimics a form of “white noise” not unlike that used in high-end conference rooms. So there you have it. For hardware costs of approximately $220, I have a floating office that’s as good as or better than what many folks have in a corporate or home office. I’m productive, happy and only a few steps away from a deck chair and that Piña Colada or Bahama Mama when my day is done. LB

An Unprecedented Journey by HEATHEr STEinbErGEr

Michigan author John Mitchell tackles the Civil War era — through an extraordinary Grand Traverse lens.

H

istory can be a dusty subject. Just consider the American Civil War. While names like Shiloh, Antietam, Gettysburg and Spotsylvania might come to mind, we don’t necessarily feel a connection with them or with the larger conflict. These events took place 150 years ago, far away from our Great Lakes. We are separated by time and geography. Or are we? All it takes is a single, clear, personal voice to transcend both space and time. Omena, Michigan-based author John C. Mitchell was fortunate to find two: In his 2011 book “Grand Traverse: The Civil War Era,” Mitchell brings to life the prolific writings of Reverend George Smith of Northport and Grand Traverse Herald editor Morgan Bates. And through the eyes of these two men, the Civil War era is thrown into sharp relief.

wasn’t particularly enamored with the city, and I had a lot of fun up here in my youth!” Forty years ago, Mitchell decided to make his permanent home on Michigan’s Leelanau Peninsula. And he kept writing, creating a series of children’s books with illustrator Tom Woodruff: “Michigan” (1987), “Great Lakes and Great Ships” (1991), “Indians of the Great Lakes” (1994) and “Prehistoric Great Lakes” (2001). Mitchell was interested in writing a novel next, but fate had different plans. In 2002-06, while he served as director of the Leelanau Historical Society and Museum, he was mesmerized by the view from his office window. “We had 400 feet of frontage on the Leland River, and there would be a constant parade of boats that had been here for a long time,” he says. “So I decided to start a boat show.” That boat show is now part of the Leland Heritage Festival. While he was involved, Mitchell prepared a short history of each boat; together, they became the foundation for his next book. “I did want to write a novel, but I realized that with history, you’d never be able to make that stuff up,” he says, laughing. “For my Leelanau book, I took the mini-histories I’d already prepared, and then I dug deeper.”

Evolution of an Author Mitchell says his entire life and career have led to the Civil War Sesquicentennial and this special book. Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, the young Mitchell had a passion for history — and for the Civil War in particular. “I began this project 50 years ago when I penned a little book on the Civil War, my first major work as an author,” he writes in the book’s introduction. “I must have been inspired by Civil War Centennial events of the time to take on the most sacred years of American history at the age of nine.” Mitchell continued to pursue his love of the written word at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where he was a literature major and worked as a reporter and editor for The Michigan Daily. Then destiny took him northward. “I came up and shook cherries in Grand Traverse country when I was 16,” Mitchell remembers. “Even as a teen, I

Voices From the Past The richly illustrated, 178-page “Wood Boats of Leelanau: A Photographic Journal” was published in 2007, and it won the Historical Society of Michigan’s annual State History Award. In an interesting twist, Mitchell decided not to limit himself to his 17-foot Boston Whaler while he was writing the book; he took a two-month course to earn his 25-ton U.S. Coast Guard master’s license. “When I got into the ‘Wood Boats of Leelanau’ project, I wanted a deeper layer of perception,” he explains. “So now I’m a licensed U.S. Coast Guard captain!” Mitchell says he’s grateful for the experience of writing that first book, because he wouldn’t have been prepared for “Grand Traverse: The Civil War Era” without it. This new book would be an unprecedented journey. “I got access to the diaries of Reverend George Smith,” he explains. “He kept those diaries from 1838 until his death in 1881; it’s the best record of life on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan at that time, and I was the first guy to have access to them.

A very special doll rests next to the grave of William H. Voice Jr., lasting evidence of a 150-year-old promise between a devoted Michigan soldier and his baby sister.

“They read like a screenplay,” he recalls. “I’d already been working on the book, and I was looking for a central thread. This was it.” It was the definitive moment for the project, a “joy-andholy-sh*t moment,” Mitchell says with a chuckle. “I knew the importance of these diaries right away. The Civil War is the holy grail of American history, and to have such a fresh perspective from a primary source — I just put my head on my hands, and for the next three years I was toast.” Morgan Bates, the ardent abolitionist editor of the Grand Traverse Herald, became a priceless secondary character in the developing work. “Bates had a lifetime habit of following the American frontier,” Mitchell observes. “Just think: Traverse City only had 200 residents in 1858, and Bates launched an eight-page, top-notch newspaper! In contrast, Northport had 750 residents at that time.” Now Mitchell had two intimate perspectives bouncing off each other, and the story of Grand Traverse country’s Civil War era burst into living color.

A Sad Yet Beautiful Story Readers will feel the bonds fray between North and South as the issue of slavery explodes. They’ll witness the development of Michigan’s harbor towns, and the disappearing of the frontier after the 1862 Homestead Act. They’ll travel along as volunteers and draftees make their way to the front lines, military hospitals, and prisoner-of-war camps. They’ll learn the story of Company K of the Michigan Sharp Shooters — a company comprised entirely of Native Americans, who were standing at such a tragic crossroads in their history. They’ll hear the roar from the SS Sultana, a Mississippi River side-wheel steamer that exploded in April 1865, killing roughly 1,800 passengers (mostly Union soldiers liberated from Confederate prison camps) in the worst maritime disaster

in U.S. history. They’ll share the heartbreak as families mourn the fathers, brothers and sons who were lost between 1861 and 1865. The Civil War will never seem more real, or more personal, than it does through Mitchell’s northern Michigan lens. Consider the story of Sergeant William H. Voice Jr., a dying 20-year-old Northport soldier who had promised to bring a beautiful doll home to his baby sister, Abbie. Hospital attendant and fellow Grand Traverse volunteer Herman Dunklow found a doll’s head and shoulders and gave them to Voice, who smiled… and passed away before morning. After Voice’s funeral in Michigan, local women made a body for the doll and presented it to little Abbie. Many years later, a friend asked Abbie to visit a 90-year-old Civil War veteran. That veteran was Herman Dunklow. When she realized who he was, Abbie retrieved her doll and returned to Dunklow’s home to show him. “Now, for a second time, the Northport doll gave a Civil War hero a measure of peace,” Mitchell writes. Overall, this book masterfully tells the tale of a place, and an entire nation, rising to meet its destiny, and it has been extremely well received. In 2011, it won the Historical Society of Michigan State History Award, and it won the Independent Publisher Book Award for Best Nonfiction (Great Lakes, Silver) in 2012. “My entire career led up to me writing a Civil War book, and this was the depth of book I wanted to write,” Mitchell reflects. One thing is certain: He’s definitely come a long way from that little book he wrote in 1961. “This work, which attempts to give you a picture of the Civil War era in Grand Traverse from the eyes of those who lived it, completes my circle of exploration in the year of the Civil War Sesquicentennial,” Mitchell writes. “It is a sad yet beautiful story, and I hope I have told it well.” LB

A

historic downtown filled with lovely shops, outdoor cafés and glorious beachfront, Grand Haven is often called the “Michigan Riviera.” Located on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, Grand Haven is the only city officially designated “Coast Guard City USA.” Featuring 1.5 miles of lovely boardwalk, an endless sugar-sand beach and iconic 19th century lighthouse, it’s no wonder the town has received so many accolades. CNN Travel named Grand Haven the #14 “Must See U.S. Beach” in August 2013. In March 2012, Grand Haven was named as one of Travel + Leisure magazine’s “Best Secret Beaches on Earth,” and Good Morning America named the town one of the “Top Five Family Beaches in the U.S.” 38

Grand Haven boasts a rich and glorious history that goes back more than 300 years, when fur trading and shipbuilding yards ruled Western Michigan. Once a leading port for ferries and passenger lines, Grand Haven became a city in 1867, as well as a stop on the Grand Trunk Railway (the former station is now the city’s transportation museum). Between 1900 and 1984, The Story and Clark Piano Company built baby grands here, and today this site stands as a retail and entertainment center. The city also was once home to U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Escanaba back in 1924, but she was sunk by the German Navy in WWII. Each year, Grand Haven hosts the popular Coast Guard Festival remembering the 101 sailors lost in the Escanaba sinking. One of the best things about Grand Haven is that you can just dock your boat and walk to the downtown area. But before you do, let the kids cool off in the high-tech Splash Pad, located right next to the municipal marina. Or play a round at Chinook Pier Mini Golf. Chinook Pier also may tempt you with its unique boutiques and nearby antique steam locomotive, Pere Marquette 1223.

The Grand Theater

Shopping and attractions in historic downtown

There truly is something special about downtown Grand Haven. You’ll feel a sense of the past as you visit the shops along Washington Avenue and take note of the historic architecture. Even the post office, built in 1872, currently houses a newly opened restaurant, Joe’s Wooden Nickel. Since 1907, the Fortino family has been operating its old world specialty shop, where you’ll find an old-fashioned candy shop, lots of locally-made products like Blueberry Haven Muffin Mix, Peach Cherry Salsa and savory Wilde Thyme Soups. Be sure to check out their coffee collection — more than 50 varieties, freshly ground upon request. The sign in the window of Buffalo Bob’s General Store says “YETI Coolers - Holds ice for a week.” Now that’s sure to get your attention! Check out the coolers as well as their Maui Jim and Native polarized sunglasses. Owners Bob and Jill Hutchinson have been offering innovative products for boaters for more than 20 years. “We carry Mojo Boat Shirts with sun-protection built in,” says Jill. “These long-sleeved, tailor vented shirts are a handsome, must-have for men out in the open sun.” Designed and hand printed right in Grand Haven for more than 40 years, the Michigan Rag Company is the exclusive retailer for authentic Marushka shirts, dresses, bags and towels. Handprints feature decorative designs inspired by the shores of Western Michigan. Filled with kites, toys, games and puzzles, Mac Kite is the place for kids; big ones, too. Stop in for boogie boards, stand-up paddleboards (to buy or rent) and nautical signal flags for your boat. Kites are a popular commodity during Grand Haven’s annual three-day Great Lakes Kite Festival, which draws thousands of flyers from the Midwest each year. “One of the most popular sports is kitesurfing,” says manager Amanda Molenkamp. “You stand on the board

and the power kite propels you across the water. It’s absolutely exhilarating.” Give it a try. Mac Kite offers kiteboarding lessons, too. Odd Side Ales is Grand Haven’s own craft brewery, operating out of the old piano factory. Their popular brews include Afternoon Delight, Java Mint Stout, and Oh, Me So Hoppy to Wheat You. The Grand, located in the historic Grand Theatre on Washington Avenue, is now a converted bar and restaurant. First opened in 1927, the theatre originally operated as a mixed vaudeville, live stage show and movie venue. With the theater marquee and entrance still in tact, The Grand restaurant now operates as Grand Haven’s first sushi bar. Show the kids what life was like “back in the day” in Northwest Ottawa County at the Tri-Cities Historical Museum. The museum, built in 1871, features exhibits about Native Americans, fur traders and the Victorian Era. The newest exhibit showcases “Dancing Waters: 50 Years of the Grand Haven Musical Fountain,” once the world’s largest musical fountain, in a working scale model.

ocated on the south arm of Lake Charlevoix, this exquisite home was designed and built by renowned local builder Andre Poineau. It holds a special place in his heart. “It was a spec house, so it was the first time in 35 years that I got to build a home for me,” Poineau says. “I put a lot of energy into the design of it, and I built it the way I wanted. “It was all about light,” he continues. “The whole inside is designed to capture light, and there’s a lot of glass in every room.” He chose to put the main living area on the second floor to best take advantage of the views. That level includes a great room with a full bar and fireplace, a luxury two-part kitchen with a full butler’s kitchen and pantry, and a luxurious master suite. The lower level includes three bedrooms, three baths, a rec room and access to the lower level of the two-level garage. The top floor is a multipurpose room; with a bar, full bath and balcony overlooking the lake, it could easily be used as a guest suite or a room for entertaining.

But what truly makes the home special, Poineau says, is the “phenomenal amount of detail in the place.” That includes the indigenous tamarack flooring he chose to use throughout, custom cabinets and doors made in his shop, wood-paneled walls, a cast iron fireplace in the master suite, pressed tin at the top of the walls, and an open riser stairway with iron banisters and iron detailing. “We also did a custom see-through aluminum stairway that goes down to the lake, so when you look out from the rec room on the lower level you can see through the stairway,” he adds. Outside, the home boasts a sprawling, 3,100-square-foot wraparound covered porch, and all the landscaping was done with access to the water in mind. There’s a stream feature that starts at the main entry and runs around the house. The home is about 55 feet from the water and features two floating piers that can accommodate boats up to 90 feet. There’s also a sand beach on the property, as well as a small storage shed. “It was designed as a year-round home, but it really shines in the summer,” Poineau says. LB

ituated just 3 nautical miles from Honey Harbour on the southern tip of Lake Huron’s Georgian Bay, South Bay Cove Marina dates back to 1990, when Barry and Liz Honeyman built the facility. “At that time, there were a few slips and a small building,” says Jill Snider, who, along with husband Bill, manages the marina. “Barry and Liz, being avid boaters, wanted a facility that was resort-like and provided outstanding customer service.” “We strive to ensure that our customers have the best experience anywhere,” adds Bill. “We encourage our staff to go ‘the nautical mile’ for customers. If there’s something that a boater requires, we will go out of our way to get it done.” That means exceptionally clean showers and bathrooms; complimentary coffee and cookies served each morning; complimentary newspaper delivery to boats every morning; dock assistance upon arrival; complimentary use of the barbecues at each set of docks; picnic tables and chairs; and more. There also is a tiny beach with a large sundeck, chaise lounges and Adirondack chairs.

Perks aren’t just for members. Transient boaters receive docking assistance and a welcome gift during registration. The marina has 120 seasonal slips and can accommodate boats up to 80 feet. There are typically up to 30 slips available for transients. Reservations are recommended, but not required. The ship’s store, Sea N’ Things, offers clothing, gifts and home and boat décor. It also has a marine section and sells prime meat, snacks and ice cream. Top of the Cove Restaurant offers a variety of cuisine and entertainment. “We provide regular entertainment where guests can sing along around the baby grand piano with entertainers,” says Jill. Events at the marina include the Welcome Back Cocktail Party, the Family Fishing Tournament and the Dinghy Poker Run. A new event, the Duck Dine-asty dinner, took place June 21. Guests dressed in camouflage and bandanas, as did the servers. The Pig Roast Dinner is scheduled for July 5 at Top of the Cove. The marina is a great start for exploring Georgian Bay Islands National Park (Beausoliel Island) and many nearby anchorages. “Guests make South Bay a destination,” says Bill. LB

Riding the Range There’s something to be said for scouting “the old-fashioned way.”

Before GPS, it was all about the binoculars!

—>

was shuffling through some old cruising photo albums recently, trying to remember what it was like in the “old days” when navigation was an art instead of a satellite image. And, hey… if you are new to boating and totally digitized, don’t stop reading here and pass me off as just another old fogy who should be in a home rather than a marina. Digital is accurate, easy and fun, but it lacks the dimensional thrill of the pre-digital learning curve. Let me explain. One of our most memorable cruises was the delivery of our new cruising boat from Lake Erie all the way around Michigan to our homeport in Holland, Michigan. It was our first time in strange waters, but the navigation wasn’t that complicated. All we had to do was follow the east coast of Michigan around to Mackinac. Our challenges lay in moving from strange port to strange port, some of which were relatively small and difficult to spot from our safe distance offshore. We compensated for our lack of digital support the old-fashioned way: By searching the distant shoreline with binoculars and looking for the ranges. If you’re a seasoned skipper, you’re probably cracking a Cheshire Cat-smile with long-forgotten recognition. If, however, you’re relatively new to the cruising game, allow me to explain the “ranges.” They were used in conjunction with ports set way inland at the end of large bays. These ports were often out of sight, or at least difficult to recognize from offshore; thus, ranges were used to guide visiting cruisers out on the open water, searching with binoculars and attempting to match shorelines with the charts. The best way to visualize a range is as a super-sized telescope sight, aimed at the distant destination. The crosshairs part of the range is strategically located at the entrance of the inland body of water (sometimes even offshore on a concrete or rock piling), the idea being that the crosshairs should be easy to spot from out on the open water and large enough for viewing from the helm of a cruiser. Keeping the telescope sight analogy in mind, the inland destination would be marked with a target — mounted on a post or tree trunk — as close to the marina destination as possible. The skipper eases up to the crosshairs and uses binoculars to locate the target and note the compass heading. Once he or she gets this visual confirmation, the final leg of the journey to the destination is as easy as motoring down a highway. I have no idea how many of these ranges are still out there, but when we approached Presque Isle late on a July

day in 1979, the 274-degree range was waiting to confirm the accuracy of our compass reading and give us a straight shot to the inland marina. Reading that particular page in my timeworn logbook and looking at my faded photo added an extended dimension to my memory. That was a long time ago, and yes… I did upgrade to GPS when it was available. The best way to explain the difference is that with GPS, you know exactly where you are at any given instant. This is comforting, but also eliminates the search for navigation checkpoints — and the anticipation of finally observing the distant destination. Cruising under any conditions is always the best part of boat ownership, but sometimes the old ways had more drama, more challenges and more appreciation of the ultimate payoff. It’s also fortunate that I was cruising with a mate when we used the range to find our route into Presque Isle. Had I been the only person on board, it would’ve been an irresistible temptation to sign off this page as the “Alone Ranger,” but I would never stoop to a pun that low… or would I? LB
