THE BEAUTY OF A CARVER YACHT IS MORE THAN SKIN DEEP. A lot of boats at the dock are all glitz and glamour. But how well do they perform when the going gets rough? All that pizazz is small comfort when you’re bouncing off the wave tops or wallowing in the troughs. At Carver, we’ve been building boats for more than 60 years that can handle the roughest water on the planet—the Great Lakes. Unlike salt water, fresh water is hard. Rock hard. And those waves can be steep and breaking. That means you take it on the chin, one wave after another in rapid succession. So we support our hulls with an extraordinary stringer system that reinforces the bow as much as the hull bottom. It’s not glamorous, but you’ll be glad of it the first time it’s blowing hard out at sea. No wonder Carver Yachts is taking the marine industry by storm. Sea trial one at your Carver Yachts dealer soon.
Stringers extend up the bow to prevent “oil canning” and reduce vibration in the hull when running into head seas.
The entire interior of the hull is coated with a white epoxy paint for easier maintenance and service.
Molded stringers are created using multiple layers of fiberglassengineered fabric for lighter weight, superior strength and resistance to water damage. Extra reinforcement in key areas provides rigid structural support for engines and generators.

Superior by Nature: Framed by a supine giant and thundering headlands, Lake Superior’s largest city is a contrast of modern amenities and historical gems. From gorgeous blue water to the Blues Festival; Finnish Pancakes to local pickerel; Aboriginal artwork to boreal forests; Thunder Bay embodies the spirit and culture of Northwest Ontario. by Marty Richardson .........................................................................................................
FROM THE HELM by Kate Bush
Limitless Cruising Big things come in small packages.
E
xpress cruisers, bowriders, pontoons, watersport boats, PWCs… these compact, thrill-seeking, trailerable boats are thriving. And there’s good reason why; many of these vessels can take on Big Water and, with trailerable boats, the cruising grounds are limitless. You can take the scenic route to traverse new water. Just look at the stats: Watersport boat sales increased 2.7 percent since 2015, as did ski/wakeboard boats (up 9.9 percent) and outboard runabout bowriders (up 5.6 percent), according Kate and husband, Matt, to the NMMA Cruiser, Watersport, boating on Lake Charlevoix Off-Shore Fishing Boat & Trailer Sales Trends report. It doesn’t stop there. Pontoons remain one of the most coveted segments, leading the outboard boat sales in 2015 with a 28.7 share of the market, according to the report. Boaters are flocking to board the “party barge.” Over in Canada, the sales of personal watercraft were up 10.5 percent, according to the 2015 Canadian Recreational Boating Statistical Abstract. These “small” boats are taking the boating market by storm. There are times when you want to see fresh terrain and cruise new, smaller water. We rounded up a few of the most beautiful inland lakes in the region that are worth trailering to (p. 48). Stop by Torch Lake in Michigan to experience the infamous sandbar — or, for a more rustic adventure, trailer your boat to Voyageur’s National Park in Minnesota. Speaking of exploring new ground, the Lake Michigan Water Trail (p. 44) is a Mecca for paddlers, stretching from Washington Island, Wisconsin, past the Windy City and around to the west coast of Michigan. Dust off your paddles and tour the shore. Thunder Bay, Ontario is a Lake Superior gem (p. 52). With plenty of on-the-water fun, local art, the picturesque Sleeping Giant Provincial Park and annual festivals, Thunder Bay is a must-stop Port of Call. Hinckley Yachts’ patriotic cover shot of the Hinckley Talaria 43 is the perfect introduction to this month of American pride. And it’s fitting, because this boat is all about living out the American dream (p. 36). With rich teak, varnished tulipwood and boasting technological advancements, cruising the Talaria 43 is a dream in and of itself. But let’s not forget about the Riviera 52 Enclosed Flybridge (p. 40). This Aussie yacht is nimble enough to ply just about any water and sports sweeping views from the flybridge. See for yourself. If you haven’t done so already, check out our new Maritime Trivia section (p. 8) and take a shot at answering J. Clary’s question of the month. Start your engines and make some memories!

Researchers Explore Chicago “Wild Reef” A stone’s throw away from Chicago’s skyscrapers, researchers are diving into Lake Michigan to explore Morgan Shoal — considered the closest thing to a wild coral reef near the city and home to the Silver Spray shipwreck. The Morgan Shoal project aims to study the wildlife, geology and characteristics of Lake Michigan and is being funded by the NOAA, the U.S. Department of Commerce and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Costal Management Program. Scientists are conducting research through dives and a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). So far, they have found a number of fish species and amphibians.
Southport Boats Announces New Michigan Dealer
Southport Boats is no longer just an East Coast company; the boat builder is extending its reach to the Midwest with a new Michigan-area dealer. Southport Boats is based in Augusta, Maine, and specializes in 27-, 29- and 33-foot offshore center console boats. Although primarily an Atlantic coast company, Southport is now available through Blue Water Marine Brokerage, which has a service center in Bay City and a dealership/demo location in Port Austin. “I had been looking to bring on an outboard boat line for many years,” says Jef Benkelman, owner of Blue Water Marine Brokerage. “Southport was the first boat I found that truly incorporated all of the features I was looking for. I did not want to settle and work with a boat I was not truly proud of and passionate about.” The move to Michigan is part of Southport Boats’ initiative to raise awareness and expand to new markets. Put-in-Bay, OH A delightful island escape on Lake Erie. ith a quirky name like Put-in-Bay, boaters have come to expect something special from this tiny island, and Put-in-Bay does not disappoint. Only 2 by 4 miles, Put-in-Bay is located on South Bass Island, the crown jewel of the Lake Erie islands. In the late 18th century, schooners sailing on Lake Erie would “put in” their boats to the bay to wait out a storm. Many unfamiliar sailors would slang it up as “puddin’ bay.” Today, Put-in-Bay has evolved into a popular resort destination with parks, caves, wineries, restaurants, tons of festivals and some of the best walleye and perch fishing in the U.S. To get there, visitors can push off from the Catawba mainland and sail the Miller Ferry with bikes, passengers and cars to Put-in-Bay — all in less than 20 minutes. Ferries run every half-hour in the summer and less frequently though November. Jet Express offers late night weekend service from Put-in-Bay to Port Clinton, Sandusky and Kelleys Island. “Put-in-Bay is extremely boater friendly,” says Peter Huston, island ambassador for Put-in-Bay. “We have great facilities, both public and private. Showers, restrooms and easy-to-access transportation — including bikes, golf carts and cabs — are all nearby the downtown docks. The downtown area is an easy walk from the docks and is where many of our great restaurants, shops and parks are located. B&B’s, hotels and cottage rentals are near the harbor so you can extend your stay. Put-in-Bay loves to host maritime events and boating get-togethers; if your club or group would like to schedule a rendezvous, we’ll be happy to help.” Historically, Put-in-Bay served as the base of operations for Commodore Oliver Perry in the War of 1812 against the British. From this victory, the famous U.S. Navy battle cry emerged: “We have met the enemy and they are ours.” Today, the 352-foot Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial proudly stands as the nation’s third tallest monument, commemorating the naval battle, as well as peace with Britain and Canada that has lasted more than 150 years. Take the $5 elevator ride to the top of the memorial for exquisite views of Lake Erie; don’t forget to watch the brief, informative video about the war.

and fantastic views, also ideal for groups,” Huston says. “The Frosty Bar is a sailor hangout for frosty mugs of beer and pizza.” Daily docking The Put-in-Bay Village Marina (A and C docks), the DeRivera Park (B dock), Put-in-Bay Township Port Authority (moorings) and Oak Point State Park are public transient marinas that can accommodate almost any size boat for daily or overnight dockages. “All [marinas] provide access to water, electricity, wireless high speed internet and the village’s large bathhouse,” says Scott Sneller, head dockmaster for the Village of Put-in-Bay (responsible for the Put-in-Bay Village Marina and DeRivera Park). “We can be reached on channels 68 and 69, but reservations are not accepted.” The private marinas Boardwalk Dock, Park Place Marina and Miller Marina do accept reservations if space is available. Celebrate with the islanders Put-in-Bay offers a summer full of fun, with festivals galore. “Every June, Pyrate Fest invades the downtown harbor with a parade, kids costume contest, cardboard boat race, learning the art of skullduggery and foam sword fights,” Huston says.
The Put-in-Bay sky is lit up with fireworks for the Fourth of July, accompanied by music in the downtown harbor. The best viewing locations are along the downtown waterfront and at Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial grounds. Visitors will think that the holidays came early during the Christmas in July event (July 22-24), when the stores are decorated for Christmas and Santa Claus marches the town in a traditional holiday parade. On August 9, the Bartender Olympics features zany theatrics, a keg roll and a best drink pour competition. The All Sport FUNdamentals Put-in-Bay Charity 5k/10k and Kids FUN Run on August 14 is an annual charity run that winds through beautiful shoreline cliffs. In September, the Annual Labor Day Bash (September 3-5) caps off the summer with the last celebration of the season. Later in the month, New Year’s at the BAY! (September 16-17) rings in the New Year a little early with casino-style gaming downtown. October 8-9 marks the Island Oktoberfest, featuring great beer, live entertainment, Wiener Schnitzel sauerbraten and other German delicacies. “No matter when you come, we’ll help you ‘find your island,’ ” Huston says. Roll Along How to keep your trailer moving smoothly.
L
ike the boats they carry, trailers need routine maintenance to ensure proper operation. Here’s how to keep your trailer rolling along.
Bearing protectors are a great investment, but adding too much grease can pop out the grease seal, allowing water to come in (and grease to sling out while traveling).

Hubs and bearings One crucial maintenance item is taking care of your trailer’s hubs and bearings, especially those that are regularly submerged during the launch and retrieval process. Hubs should be disassembled and thoroughly inspected at least annually for corrosion and damage (wear, pitting, etc.), after which they should be cleaned and repacked with good quality marine grease. Many owners replace the grease seals each time the hub is pulled as cheap, preventative insurance. Check bearings by jacking up the trailer, giving each wheel a good spin and checking for unusual noise, vibration, or excessive play — any of which can signal worn or damaged bearings. One of the best investments to extend the life of your wheel bearings is installing bearing protectors. There are a number of different styles available (Bearing Buddies® are a popular brand) but they’re all designed to do the same thing: Keep the bearings lubricated while protecting them from dirt, grit and water intrusion. Brakes Typically, trailer brakes are either hydraulic surge brakes (the most common type) or electrically activated brakes, both of which can use either disc or drum brakes. Drum brakes are usually found on trailers for smaller, lighter boats, while disc brakes are best for larger boat trailers. Corrosion is the primary concern with both types of brakes. When inspecting surge brakes, check wheel cylinders, brake

(Top): Inspect tires regularly for signs of damage. (Bottom): The easiest time to inspect your trailer for issues (damaged rollers, corroded hardware, etc.) is with the boat launched.
lines and the master cylinder for corrosion and fluid leaks. In addition to changing out your brake fluid annually, you should also check the brake fluid level before each trip and regularly inspect the fluid for rust, sediment or water contamination. Tires Inspect tires regularly for cracks and other signs of UV damage, loss of tire pressure, loose lug nuts, etc. Trailer tires deteriorate more rapidly when constantly exposed to sunlight. You can extend their life by using tire covers (solid-color garbage bags will do in a pinch) or storing your boat inside. The application of a tire protectant (such as Armor All®) will also help. When replacing tires, never mix and match different types (i.e., bias ply and radials), and use only tires designed for boat trailers. These tires are typically more expensive, but have thicker sidewalls and are more robust. Rollers and pads Check trailer rollers and pads regularly for splits, cracks, and loose or damaged equipment. Worn or broken components should be replaced immediately to eliminate launch and loading problems and prevent damage to the hull. If a roller replacement is needed, translucent yellow or clear poly units are more UV resistant and hold up better than black rubber units. Winches Regularly check the winch strap or cable for kinks or fraying, and replace immediately if they’re damaged. You’ll also want to check the winch itself for loose mounting hardware, and loose or worn gears and internal components. For electric units, make sure the power cable is corrosion free and in good condition.

Frame and axle care Corrosion is your trailer’s constant enemy. Spray all parts that are not galvanized or made of stainless steel (U-bolts, nuts, leaf springs, etc.) liberally with a rust inhibitor such as CRC or Boeshield T-9. One insidious problem to watch out for is corrosion inside the axle tube as a result of trapped water. Corrosion can lead to a catastrophic failure of the axle. To avoid this, verify the axle is completely sealed; if not, ensure that it drains properly after each use. Boat trailers are subjected to a lot of bouncing and vibration. Be sure to check the tightness of all nuts and bolts for your trailer’s hardware, structural components and leaf springs during your annual inspection, and in preparation for (and during) those long road trips.
DON’T HESITATE TO RENOVATE by Capt. Frank Lanier
Safer Towing
Worn or damaged components (such as this fraying winch strap) should be replaced immediately upon discovery, before failure can occur.
Lights and wiring Look for corrosion on all connectors and fixtures (a dab of protective grease will help in this regard), as well as wires that are damaged or not properly supported. Most trailer lights consist of two red plastic lenses held together by screws and kept watertight by sandwiching a rubber gasket between them. Check the tightness of these screws monthly, as they often loosen due to road vibration. It’s also a good idea to pull and inspect the rubber gasket annually, or simply replace it each year as a preventative measure against failure. Most new trailers come with completely sealed LED lights — a plus in the war against blown bulbs and corroded sockets. However, not all LED lights are created equal. Before swapping out existing incandescent lights, make sure that the new LED lights are as bright as the factoryinstalled originals. ★
1. Get in the habit of doing a quick trailer safety check prior to heading out on the highway and after every pit stop for gas and food. In addition to looking for obvious damage, check the hubs for overheating, make sure all lights are operating properly, verify the trailer ball and hitch connection is tight and that all safety chains are in place. 2. Always carry a spare tire and jack. If you’re relying on your tow vehicle’s jack, verify it’ll also work for your trailer (many won’t) and that it’s beefy enough to lift the boat and trailer. 3. Be proactive and put together a spare parts kit for your trailer. Include spare lug nuts, extra fuses and bulbs (for both trailer and tow vehicle), a few pieces of electrical wire, wire connectors, duct tape and an extra bearing protector. You should also carry basic tools (hammer, socket sets, wrenches, screwdrivers, grease gun, etc.) as well as any specialty tools or items: Emory paper (to sand a scarred axle spline), assorted blocks of wood, cotter pins, etc. 4. For longer trips, consider carrying a spare hub (with bearings already installed) for added peace of mind. 5. A good roadside emergency kit — complete with flares, reflectors and a flashlight — will be extremely useful in the event of a breakdown, particularly at night.
Sometimes, even the rescuers need to be rescued.

SAFETY FIRST by Helen Aitken
Every Trailer Needs TLC Keep your trailer safe and serviceable. y husband, Scott, asked me, “Did you dump grease onto the driveway, under the trailer?” Imagine my expression as I said, “No.” Scott crawled under the trailer and noticed that the seals had failed, the leaf springs were rusted and the bearing system needed to be replaced. Fortunately, he made it to the repair center unscathed. The trailer’s custom leaf springs had to be ordered from the manufacturer. There was a hefty shipping and handling cost, tax and a long wait. We missed two weeks on the water. With the repairs, the checkbook was lighter by $500. It’s important to maintain your trailer to avoid these headaches.
This trailer has four rusty leaf springs ready for replacement.
Torsion axle springs last longer but are more expensive than leaf springs.

Trailer basics There are two bearing systems and neither are truly “closed.” One uses grease and the other uses oil for lubrication. Both can leak, and seal failure can result in system failure. The oil system’s internal workings aren’t seen from the outside, but the grease system can be easily monitored. Unfortunately, if you add too much grease, it may spray out or create an oil slick, which is an environmental issue. Hot driveways and heat buildup on the bearings from traveling to docks cause the seals to expand. In the water, seals contract and eventually crack. After three years, our seals acted like old underwear elastic; grease leaked out and water got in. Leaf springs Trailer springs aren’t coils. Instead, leaf springs are curved, rectangular bars of galvanized steel, reinforced from the center with a bolt connecting several decreasingly smaller bars together. Springs vary in size, from two to eight leafs. As the load gets heavier, the leaf numbers increase. The U-shape attaches to the axle and flexes up and down as the trailer moves, reducing the stress on the horizontal bar brace. Although coated with black or silver paint, springs eventually rust. Our trailer only made three-dozen trips to the ramp. Unfortunately, it’s not the number of times the trailer goes into the water that matters, it’s the calendar time from the first trip to the last. With repairs and new parts, we expect to replace the parts again in three years. Although some owners prefer torsion axle springs (which last about two times longer than leaf springs) the replacement is expensive: About $700-$800 each. Tires are important Flat tires are the No. 1 reason for needing trailer assistance. Tires determine the trailer’s load capacity and stress on the leaf springs. Small tires rotate more; uneven wear comes from
LAKELANDBOATING.COM
extra weight, bent axles and under-inflation. Dry rot from side cracks and flat spots also wear tires. Check the tread by placing a penny upside down in the groove. If you see Lincoln’s head, the tire needs replacing. The sidewall displays tire information, including: The company name; four digits with the production date (in weeks and years); “ST” for trailer tire; tire width; the ratio of height to width; “D” for “bias ply;” “R” for “radial;” and the wheel diameter. Although more expensive, radial tires are the best choice for heat buildup resistance, greater load capacity, a softer ride and better fuel efficiency. All the tires on the trailer should be the same type. Properly inflate tires, including the spare, using a pressure gauge. Weather and heat built up during travel may increase tire inflation. When you stop, check the tires. Sometimes the valve stem loses air; press against it and listen. Most tires have a running speed of 65 mph; any faster and the load capacity lowers by 10 percent. Lastly, never run on flat tires; it could destroy the wheel. Trailer assistance protection Homeowner policies may cover your boat and offer products for road and water assistance. Adding a BoatU.S. or Sea Tow membership may provide coverage not found in insurance policies. Do you need both? Check the pros and cons, and weigh them against the added fees. Does the coverage handle flats, a disabled trailer, the towing vehicle, accidents, towing fees, dead batteries or low fuel? What is the cap for services rendered? How many service operators are available in your area? Finally, keep the agency’s phone number on the boat. Maintenance schedule Yearly and routine maintenance is as important as maintaining the tow vehicle. Some repairs may not be DIY projects. Yet, it helps to watch professionals perform tasks, ask questions and read as much as possible; learn to complete simple tasks. Check for rust and cracks everywhere: On license plate bolts, hubs, brakes, frame and suspension, hitch, winch, coupler, tongue jack, brackets and mountings on the bunks. Replace worn straps or roller carpets and check the tongue weight capacity. Although trailers have many parts, they are usually uncomplicated. Keeping track and giving them a little TLC will help you have a great boating season. ★

Small but Mighty Outfit your small boat with powerful electronics.

here has never been a better time to have a small boat and be in the market for electronics. Major manufacturers are competing to create comprehensive models with features that can also be found on yachts. The selection and range of features in all-in-one displays is the best it has ever been. Prices have dropped in many cases, making these electronics a reasonable option for most small boats. Size isn’t everything — or is it? Most small boats are limited in console space, so the size of a GPS, chartplotter and fish finder combination must conform to tight real estate. Manufacturers offer many models, with the most popular units for smaller boats having 4- to 9-inch screens (measured diagonally). Many model lines have identical or very similar features regardless of size, but prices increase with screen size. Compact units with a 4-inch display may contain detailed, preloaded or chart cards; high quality broadband; CHIRP; high dynamic down and side scan; or even a combination of some (or all) of these features. Almost all units have split-screen modes and some allow easy display customization. This is something to consider when deciding which screen size is right for you. An already small 4-inch screen may seem tiny when split in two. Conversely, a 5- or 7-inch display will have a split-screen with decent size windows that are still quite viewable. Many users’ split-screen shows the current track on one side and the sounder feature on the other. This allows the user to avoid constantly switching between screens. Make sure the unit you decide on displays these two split-screens adequately. If you really want a larger display but just can’t fit it on your console or dash, consider using a flexible mount option such as those by Ram Mounts. With a small round base taking up no more space than a 2-inch analog gauge, the mount utilizes a ball and socket arrangement; an arm attaches to the base and the other end holds a bracket large enough to mount a larger combination display up and away from the console or dash. They also have the added benefit of easy removal and storage, and limitless angle adjustment. Users find that they will want to go with the largest screen their mounting location and budget will allow, in order to avoid constantly switching between screens and zooming in and out. Today’s machines display so much information and detail that some of it can get lost on a tiny screen.
Latest technology Today’s small, economical combo units have some pretty impressive technology packed inside them. There are units that contain detailed charts with all the needed navigation information preloaded or included in a data card within the package. Gone are the days when you invested as much in electronic chart cards for your new GPS as you did in the unit itself. Each manufacturer offers different chart options so it is important to make sure the unit you are considering has adequate charts for the areas you cruise. Also make sure you are comparing units that have the same type of cartography. There are new fish finder and sounder options available on smaller units that were only found on more expensive units in years past. It is important to determine which sounder system is right for your application and what kind of transducer is included (if at all). Some units will have side scanning capability built in, while some require modules to be added. It is important to know ahead of time what sounder options you want, as you may be unable to add these options later on. Touch screens are now available on smaller displays; they are loved by some and cursed by others. The best way to test out this feature is by visiting a marine electronics dealer and pushing buttons. Get a feel for how each model works and find a favorite with all the features you want. It is out there waiting for you. ★
There are many electronic options for small boats these days. Manufacturers, including Simrad, Lowarance, Raymarine and Garmin provide great, space-saving units that have split-screen and touchscreen features.

Here Comes the Fun Sea-Doo’s Tim McKercher introduces the fun and powerful RXT-X 300 personal watercraft. LB: The Sea-Doo RXT-X 300 now features the Rotax 1630 ACE 300-hp engine. Why will this new model be especially appealing to Great Lakes personal watercraft (PWC) enthusiasts?
Sea-Doo 888-272-9222 SEA-DOO.COM
LB: What ergonomic features contribute to the “rider-centric” experience?
McKercher: BRP’s ergonomics specialists use what’s referred to as the “Best Triangle,” which measures touch points including the feet, hands and hips. They consider a wide variety of body sizes to develop a seating, foot-placement and handlebar setup that will be comfortable for riders 5-feet to 6-feet, 5-inches. How the rider connects to the machine determines the level of comfort and control. LB: What are the advantages of the RXT-X hull design?
McKercher: The RXT-X features the S3 hull, which stands for Stepped Stable and Strong. This is the longest hull in the Sea-Doo line, and is deep with a 23-degree dead rise. This longer hull and deep V allows the RXT-X to bridge chop better and more easily penetrate the wave faces. In perfect conditions, the step in the hull creates an air pocket that reduces water friction and makes the hull feel shorter than it is. The hull is extremely fast and is matched perfectly with the engine package.

to program how the power is delivered. The watercraft starts in touring mode for a smooth, linear power delivery. Sport mode will advance the timing and provide greater throttle response for greater acceleration. For longer rides and to conserve fuel, the ECO mode can be activated. LB: What’s unique about the braking system?
McKercher: Sea-Doo introduced the first braking system in 2009 called iBR (intelligent brake and reverse), which changed how riders experience the water. With the iBR system, the watercraft starts in neutral for more control at the dock or boat ramp. While underway, the rider can stop whenever they want by using the brake. Sea-Doo now includes the second-generation of iBR, which actuates even faster and will stop a watercraft 160 feet sooner than the same watercraft without a brake at 50 mph. The benefit is simply more control on the water, leading to more fun. LB: How much weight does the RXT-X 300 accommodate?
McKercher: The RXT-X 300 three-seater can carry a load of 600 pounds at 65 mph.
LB: How does Sea-Doo’s special design improve cornering stability?
LB: What are the most popular accessories available with the RXT-X 300?
McKercher: The X-series sponsons are designed for racing applications and are fully adjustable with five settings. With the sponsons in the up position, the handling will be looser and more playful. With the sponsons down, the handling is more aggressive and precise.
McKercher: This is already a very loaded performance model with a few accessories complimenting the experience. The Speed Ties are two integrated, retractable dock lines located left of the helm and on the transom to make tying up easy. The other new accessory is the snap-in fender that clips on the bond rail, providing a cushion at the dock, seawall or other boat. Perhaps the most important accessory is a custom-fitted cover to protect the watercraft from the elements. ★

In addition to the environmentally friendly and efficient Rotax 1630 ACE 300-hp engine, which is 9 percent bigger and produces 15 percent more power, our Ergolock design provides more comfort and control. This gives riders the confidence to push their limits further. Adding to the overall level of control is the second generation of iBR (Intelligent Brake and Reverse), which provides neutral starting and the ability to stop quickly when needed. Ultimately, for the performance enthusiast, the more power, comfort and control, the more fun you have.
CRUISING WITH KIDS by Diane Seltzer
Raised on the Water Inspiring the next generation of boaters.

he moments that your kids will remember for a lifetime are likely to happen on your boat. Going for a cruise, casting a line, relaxing at the lake — these are the moments that your kids will treasure. When I was a kid, I didn’t know anything about boating. It wasn’t until I was an adult that my soon-to-be husband and I discovered boating together. We were lucky enough to be invited out on a sailboat for a weekend cruise with some friends. By the end of our weekend we were hooked on the boating lifestyle and immediately began searching for our first boat. Fast-forward 15 years (and two boats later), and our two young girls, 8 and 4, don’t know what it’s like to not be on a boat. Their love of boating is so strong; I cannot imagine them ever wanting to give up the lifestyle. Get kids hooked early As summer babies, both of our girls were fortunate enough to experience their first trip on a boat when they were each only 2 weeks old. The fresh air and peaceful sounds of nature had a calming effect on them as babies. In fact, our second daughter was such a colicky infant that when we escaped to the boat on the weekends the gentle rocking on the water soothed her discomfort unlike anything else. By their second summers, I watched our girls learn to take some of their first steps in our cockpit. We heard them learn to say “duck” as they sprinkled crackers off the side of the boat into the water. We watched with delight as they quickly became attached to spending summers on the boat.
While some people may worry about taking young children on a boat, our kids developed a respect for limits and rules early on, understanding that there are rules that must be followed to be safe. Wearing a life jacket at a young age on the water became as natural and necessary as putting on a regular jacket when it gets cold. You might say they were raised on the water — or at least raised to love the water. Grow their love of boating Each year, my kids are drawn more and more into the boating lifestyle. They enjoy connecting with nature, learning about tidal changes and, most importantly, how to jump super high off the swim platform into the water. Our oldest daughter loves to swim when we are anchored out and help her dad collect clams from the bottom of the river. Our little one is still getting her sea legs and is most impressed by ducks swimming around our boat or ospreys perched high up in their nests along the coastline. At the marina, both kids enjoy socializing and being the official “greeters” on our dock. If you walk your dog past our boat you better be prepared to share his name and stop for a few minutes of petting. Whether we are tied up in our own slip or transients at another marina, they love how boating gives us the opportunity to meet new people and visit new places. I see their love of boating grow as they continue to soak in little bits of knowledge and experiences. They are like sponges wanting to absorb it all, and we are happy to teach them. From early May through mid-October, this is their weekend life on our boat Seltzer Water. Create family memories Busy families are always looking for ways to connect more — to unplug, slow things down and share those special moments together as a family. And that’s one of the reasons why our boat has become such an important part of our lives. We know that these precious years with our kids will tick by quickly, and there is nothing like spending time in close quarters on a boat to get more time together. The joy we experience as boaters gets even stronger when we see it through the eyes of our kids (or grandkids). Whether we are inspiring them to be lifelong boaters with their own families, or simply create lifelong memories for their childhood, we know that these experiences on the boat — connecting as a family — is what it’s really all about. ★

uch like the versatility folks find in popular automobile platforms such as crossovers and SUVs, dual console boats are packed with utility. This means that one boat can be used for serious fishing in the morning, followed by family fun in the afternoon. That utility, along with performance and comfort features, is what the Boston Whaler Vantage 320 is all about. Part of Whaler’s dual-console Vantage lineup, the 320 sits at the top of the heap, followed by its 270 Vantage and 230 Vantage sisterships. Up forward is a large, comfortable, U-shaped seating area with twin chaise lounges. Moving aft, there is an expansive split console. The helm is to starboard with companion seating situated to port, and the console and standard hardtop covers a good chunk of the cockpit. An enclosed head sits under the port console. Farther aft still is the cockpit, which has comfortable seating and plenty of room for angling. There’s even a diving door in the starboard transom that makes fishing easier. Boston Whaler is known for its clever, transformer-like seating arrangements, and the 320 Vantage does not disappoint. Back in the aft cockpit is a seating unit that can be used as an aft- and forward-facing bench arrangement,

but also can be easily converted into an expansive chaise lounge (forward- or aft-facing), or into a wide and comfy sunpad. Other amenities in the cockpit include a wet bar and grill with a sink, a refrigerator and lots of stowage drawers. Standard power on the Vantage 320 is a pair of 250-hp Mercury Verado FourStroke outboards with hydraulic steering and electronic engine controls. Fitted with base power, the 320 Vantage is good for a top end in the low to mid 40-mph range, with an efficient cruise speed in the mid- 20s. Go all in and opt for the maximum rated power, two 350-hp Mercury Verado FourStrokes, and the Vantage 320 pushes well into the low 50s, cruising efficiently in the low 30s. With a pedigreed, unsinkable Whaler hull sporting 21 degrees of transom deadrise, the 320 Vantage is equipped for rough waters and serious offshore work. Its 1-foot, 10-inch draft allows anglers to access relatively skinny water for inshore species, too. If you’re looking for a boat that performs like a champion in the rough stuff, but is also complimented with great fishing and comfort amenities, the Boston Whaler Vantage 320 should be near the top of your list. ★

Sea Ray L650 All about luxury.
S
ea Ray has a solid reputation for building capable runabouts, sport cruisers, express boats and yachts that dates back decades. But it wasn’t until a couple of years ago that the builder expanded into new territory with its L Class line of Mediterranean-inspired flybridge and express motor yachts. In case you’re wondering, the “L” in Sea Ray’s moniker stands for luxury. The flagship of the L series — the L650 — is all about luxury. On deck, the luxury and comfort features start forward, where a unique lounging area is nestled into the foredeck. Here we found a comfy, forward-facing couch, twin convertible chaise lounges and a glossy drop-in teak table that turns the area into a very ample dining area. It’s one of several areas on the L650 that Sea Ray likes to call a “Social Zone.” Each zone has a different function, depending on what folks are up to. The aft cockpit features another one of these zones, where guests can gather and enjoy an al fresco dinner among rich, buttery upholstery and what feels like acres of beautiful teak woodwork. There are more social zones below, including a luxurious main salon that is on the same level as the aft cockpit. This
creates a congruent area where guests can relax, dine or socialize. Between the cockpit and main salon is a large expanse of sliding glass that opens to seamlessly connect the two areas. Further below is a four-cabin layout with a mid-cabin master stateroom, VIP stateroom in the bow and two smaller guest rooms to port and starboard. As you’d expect, the interior’s fit and finish is sumptuous, with stylish accents of wood, metal and fine fabrics. Under the engine hatch in the aft cockpit sits a pair of 1,150-hp Caterpillar C-18A turbo diesels. Those big Caterpillar diesels will launch the L650 to a top speed of around 35 mph. Most folks will cruise in the mid-20s, however, where the L650 has an ample cruising range of around 275 miles. Josh Northrop, sales executive with MarineMax Port Clinton, (MARINEMAX.COM; 419-797-4492) says, “The 2016 Sea Ray L650 Express is the flagship in the Sea Ray lineup. The Sea Ray L Class offers the epitome of luxury and quality with unparalleled customer support. MarineMax offers the highest level of dealer support with more than 60 locations throughout the U.S., and an extraordinary and carefree boating experience.” ★

ince Vanquish Boats has some of the sharpest looking boats on the water, we were excited when we came across the new 21 Bristol Harbor Series Center Console, or 21CC for short. And the 21CC isn’t just a looker — it also provides solid performance and has a lot of baked-in comfort. As you’d expect with any center console, the 21CC’s layout is fairly simple and no-nonsense. Still, there’s a nice blend of features aboard. Up forward is a fully upholstered, U-shaped seating area that serves as a gathering area, complimented by a cozy bench seat ahead of the center console unit. Under the oversized center console is an enclosed head area that is roomier than you’d expect in a 21-footer. Twin jump seats aft and a nicely upholstered seat/leaning post aft of the helm round out the rest of the comfy seating accommodations. Though the standard power plant on the 21CC is a 115-hp Mercury FourStroke outboard, the factory recommends a 150-hp FourStroke unit for the most ideal cost/performance ratio. Tipped to the pins, the 21CC has a top speed of 38 mph, with an efficient cruise settling in around 28 mph. You can
LAKELANDBOATING.COM
also specify Yamaha outboard power. Maximum rated hp for the 21CC is 200 horses, which will put you in the high 40s. Though the 21CCs hull deadrise is a relatively shallow 17 degrees at the transom, this is part of Vanquish’s variable deadrise hull design. It features a very steep entry at the bow that tapers gracefully aft. Though we didn’t have a chance to fully run the 21CC, we have run other Vanquish models in some fairly snotty weather. We can report that all of them handled quite well, despite the nasty chop. The 21CC should prove no different. “The 21-foot Bristol Harbor Series Center Console is constructed with many of the quality materials you’ll find in larger Vanquish models,” Morgan Huntley with Vanquish Boats says. “A precisely balanced variable deadrise hull keeps you stable at rest, yet dry and comfortable in chop. But what’s even more exciting is that our special, variable deadrise hull design produces much greater performance with less hp than other 21-foot center consoles. The Bristol Harbor Series from Vanquish Boats is a tremendous value in the famous line of Vanquish luxury watercraft.” ★

Zodiac Medline 660 Stable speed demon.
R
igid hull inflatable boats (RIBs) are a segment of the U.S. boating market that is enjoying a bit of a renaissance. Tempted by their stability, performance and handling, lots of folks are jumping ship from traditional center console and sport boats and trading up to a RIB. A new model from Zodiac that recently caught our eye is the Medline 660. We should first discuss what makes a RIB like the Medline 660 a good choice for a lot of folks. First and foremost, the massive quantity of air in the tubes makes for an incredibly stable craft with lots of buoyancy. That not only means less rolling in a sea, but also enhanced cornering performance. Force a RIB hard into a turn and those tubes “push back” and engage, allowing aggressive cornering at higher speeds. Safety is a factor, too. Even a RIB that’s taken on water from hull damage or mechanical failure can remain afloat, thanks to those inflatable tubes. The first thing that we noticed when we hopped aboard the Medline 660 is that the deck spaces are nicely outfitted. Up forward, a set of cushioned panels form an expansive sunpad that should be great for hanging out and relaxing at
anchor. Stowing these panels expands the foredeck space. A leaning post sits just behind a relatively narrow center console/steering station, while just behind is a sturdy, comfortable bench seat. One of the nicest aspects of the Medline 660’s deck design is the ample aft deck, which is capped in faux teak planking and perfect for getting people in and out of the water. There’s even an optional integrated towing pole for pulling skiers, wake boarders, tubes and toys. The Medline 660 comes standard with a 115-hp Yamaha F115 four-stroke outboard. Our test craft was fitted with the maximum allowable power plant: A 175-hp Yamaha F150 four-stroke outboard. Though we don’t have exact performance figures for this boat yet (since it’s so new), we expect the F175 to top out in the 45-mph range and cruise nicely in the high 20s. “[The Medline 660] offers a sharp 25-degree deadrise at the stern, which, when combined with the 22-inch tubes gives her a soft, dry and incredibly stable ride,” says Brent Reed of Reed Yachts Sales (REEDYACHTSALES.COM; 616-842-8899). “She is a great, all-around family boat that you can fish, ski, tube, wakeboard, or simply relax at the beach or at anchor.” ★

shoes off in order to board. One of the secrets to matrimonial bliss, at least on the water, is ensuring that your passengers are comfortable underway.
Honestly, I expected the Dos Equis “most interesting man in the world” to climb aboard during our sea trial. The owner’s name and hail port in 22-karat gold vinyl popped from the transom, complete with an unfurled red, white and blue ensign that neatly complemented the Awlgrip painted hull. Four inflatable fenders protecting that finish from dock rash quickly moved into position and secured to strategically located fastening clips that run the length of the hull. Unlike most boat tests, no one rushed to start the engines, let alone spin up the Seakeeper Gyro; instead, Eric Champlin, Hinckley’s senior sales director, and I just sat down and began a mind-wandering conversation about family, shared experiences, values, boat building techniques, the merits of Hamilton waterjets and you — the next Hinckley owner.
Top of the line Hinckley makes about 50 of these boats a year, and while no two owners are the same, some demographics are revealing. You are a person with means: With a base price of $1.6 million, this sporty, open-air express is not your typical entry-level runabout. Patient. Each Hinckley is commissioned, and for this model that means at least six months. Performance driven. Twin Cummins QSB 550s deliver a 34-knot, wide open boat with a cruising speed of 29 knots. Precise. Control is provided by Hinckley’s latest generation of Jetstick. More than joystick technology, Jetstick II enhances the driving experience by governing power with smooth, proportional control. Actually, that’s quite a feat; unlike propeller-driven pods or outboards we typically see connected to a joystick, Talaria uses waterjets with sophisticated buckets in concert with a forward thruster. This updated model adds virtual anchoring and heading hold, ideal for single-handed cruising. You love gadgets. Admit it: There’s a bit of James Bond in all of us, and for Talaria there are three distinct push button-controlled innovations that will add to your legend. We might call the first a parlor trick, since it involves the motoryacht’s salon. Swept glass windows and the sliding door that form the secure aft enclosure electrically retract into the port and starboard cabinetry. In seconds, living and entertaining space stretches from the helm to the transom. That’s simple enough if the glass is straight, but on a Hinckley the DTS glass panels are curved; they have to disappear below deck, meaning no engine or mechanical parts in the way. On a boat with a scant 28-inch draft, that, my friends, is a magic trick. By the way, this patent-pending system was manufactured in Detroit. In addition to Jetstick II, the Talaria 43 has an optional helm accessory to keep operations easy: A handheld remote control known as PalmStick. For those rare occasions where the helm does not offer the best view, like backing into a narrow slip, or picking your way up a tricky channel made difficult by low water or shoaling, PalmStick allows you to drive wherever the vantage point seems best. In simplest of terms, it’s like a wireless video game controller.
Rest and relaxation One of the secrets to matrimonial bliss, at least on the water, is ensuring that your passengers are comfortable underway. Stowed in the sole of the Talaria 43 is the newest generation of gyro stabilization from Seakeeper. We tested this model inland and then ran outside into 3-foot waves. Cycling the gyro on and then off several times clearly demonstrated the effectiveness of mitigating the uncomfortable effects of rolling side-to-side by some 70 percent or more. Since most customers use this boat for entertaining, and many guests may not be mariners, Hinckley devoted great thought into eliminating boarding embarrassment. A Bo Peep handrail identifies a side-boarding door, with molded step with teak tread below the coaming door on the starboard side. All lines, shore power cables and water hoses are out of the way.

Pods or Jets? Hinckley introduced waterjet propulsion on its first Picnic Boat in 1994. Near home port in Trenton, Maine, where the production facility is located, lobster traps are a never ending mine field to navigate. A Downeaster design and jets made sense to scoot over the surface without fouling traditional props. The idea spread along with Hinckley’s footprint of service yards and delivery centers that now stretch from Irish Boat Shop in the Great Lakes along the Atlantic seaboard and up into the Gulf Coast at Naples. As part of the Hinckley ownership experience, owners get a three-day orientation that includes day and night operation on the water and, depending on your interest, a DIY course in systems in a neatly organized, well labeled bilge. Waterjets have few moving parts, are tireless workhorses on many Navy vessels and come with a five-year warranty. This is the first model Hinckley has offered with Volvo IPS 600 pod drives as an option from inception. The difference? At low speed, props win the fuel economy proposition, while jets claim top honors at speed. One can argue over maintenance costs for either, just know that both require periodic service, as do all boats. A measurable difference may be in where and how you plan to enjoy this boat. Like many Midwesterners, Florida beckons about the time the first snowflakes arrive. With a jet drive and low profile, this is a very easy boat to transport by truck, with little make-ready time upon arrival. Bottom line, handling is straight as an arrow, a true centerline course; it’s extremely easy to master docking with Jetstick II fingertip control. This is precision craftsmanship second to none — a stirring example of what makes America great. ★
SPECS
Settee seating for eight in the cockpit, arranged in a traditional “L” shape, and a hospitality center to starboard would provide enough entertainment for most — but then you’d be missing the best part of this yacht. The single-level cockpit and salon create an easy flow between the two spaces. A full portside galley is opposite the helm — in short, all refreshments are close at hand. Our test boat galley was finished completely in cherry, making the sink, stovetop and pullout drawer refrigerator/freezer indistinguishable. Most owners opt for a Corian countertop; yet semi-custom work is one of the differentiators of the Hinckley product. For a traditional looking boat, the helm was amazingly high-tech. Two color multi-function displays created a visual array of information we’ve come to rely on. Separate system monitoring devices round out the independent displays, while Hinckley’s Onwatch remotely monitors bilge, security, shore power, batteries, location and critical engine data. Authorized technicians, helping to minimize a mechanics time, can perform diagnostics for engine and control systems remotely. Neatly recessed into the helm side panel along the stairs leading below to the cabin and head, is a smart-looking distribution panel with easy to understand sections for 24-volt DC and 120/240VAC breakers and amp meters. The forward berth serves as the master, featuring a centerline berth with innerspring mattress, while the double guest cabin offers adequate yet modest overnight accommodations. Both share the portside head and separate molded fiberglass shower enclosure with teak seat.

Y
ou would have to imagine that a boat builder, based on an island, would figure out quickly how to craft a vessel that could tame the surrounding seas. Riviera, from the “Land Down Under,” has proven time and again they have mastered the ability to build yachts that can ply pretty much any water. And their latest offering, the new Riviera 52 Enclosed Flybridge, proves that point yet again. Having built yachts for more than 35 years, Riviera creates a plethora of sea-going yachts, from 36 to 77 feet of pure Aussie goodness. From their 14-hectare (that’s 35 acres to you and me) factory in Coomera, Queensland (go ahead and Google it, I did), Riviera now exports more than half of their annual production to their global dealership network in more than 60 countries. Apparently their yachts are welcome worldwide. Looking at the 52 Enclosed Flybridge, I can see why.

Command bridge
For any flybridge yacht, the bridge should be a focal point of control and comfort. Riviera covers both and then some. From the indoor flybridge staircase with “floating” teak steps, to the twin plush Pompanette helm chairs, and the L-shaped settee with table, Riviera certainly makes the flybridge a central gathering point. On the comfort front, the settee is aft to port, offering commanding views of where you have been. The fiberglass table makes for easy cleaning and has built-in cup holders. Comfort abounds forward with a lounge seat to starboard, great for chatting it up with the captain or stretching your legs while looking forward. To port is a wet bar with an Isotherm fridge, a sink, an Ambassador hot/cold folding faucet and a prep area. Opt for the 26-inch flat screen LED TV. Control is a relative term, so let’s start at the helm that’s forward to port. With the Volvo Penta IPS950 725-hp twin engines comes the Volvo joystick controller and Volvo Glass Cockpit — a fully integrated touch-screen, multi-function system that incorporates engine and navigation information into several displays. Set for left hand usage on the left arm console, the joystick is easy to get used to and is very responsive. I not only pirouetted the 52 EF a few times around the docks (much to the chagrin of the onlookers, I didn’t hit anything), but also gingerly docked this beast side-to. The console is large enough for three 15-inch displays, yet is not obtrusive to the line of sight. A Czone LED display allows you to control all systems on-board from one unit (or iPad). For backing down on fish, Riviera also has a second control station on the fly with a joystick and engine control display aft starboard, offering a clear view of the action below. Opt for a third setup in the cockpit. It’s an enclosed bridge and Riviera does it a bit different; they enclose it on three sides with

a full hardtop. Twin forward windshields with pantograph wipers and tinted side windows that slide open offer great visibility. On the fourth side, there’s a full-length, wrap-around strata glass curtain that makes up the aft wall. It’s not only a fully-enclosed area that’s environmentally controlled, but you can also clearly see in every direction. The hardtop features an electric sunroof with shade, flush lighting and grabrails that pretty much ring the area.
No skimping
Don’t think the creature comforts stop there; that’s just the beginning. The main deck is adorned in a classic and easy to maintain high-gloss cherry wood. Underfoot is Kentucky Oak flooring. The salon includes a 40-inch LED TV, liquor cabinet and portside U-shaped leather settee with convertible dining table that folds, swivels and lowers into a coffee table. Straight across is a three-person settee; the center seat pulls out as an ottoman and can be used as an extra seat for dining. Filling the void in the settee is a flip-up table that essentially creates two additional dining seats on each end, booth style. Riviera deserves kudos for this utilization of space and functionality. The salon side windows can be ordered as fixed or with opening sliders — for no change of cost. If you go with fixed sliders, there are two 12,000 BTU AC systems. For more chills, upgrade to the Tropical AC package, which includes an upgraded generator and a heat reflective film on windows.
Rest easy
Accommodations below are just as nice as the rest of the 52 EF. You can decide if the forward stateroom or mid-ship should be designated as the master. With a standard layout of a mid-ship master stateroom, the queen walk-around berth is off-center to port, with end tables, a 12,000 BTU
Power play
As mentioned, the Riviera 52 EF is powered by twin Volvo Penta D11 IPS950 diesel engines, producing 725 hp each, with forward-facing pods. It’s the pods that help to keep the draft to a mere 3-foot, 11-inch depth. With a full fiberglass hull below the waterline, solid keel and chines, the 52 EF tracks true when at speed and responds quickly when close-in. Running at varying speeds, I found my rpm/ speed numbers to be in line with Riviera’s performance spec sheet — maybe even a touch better. Cruising at 2,250 rpm will burn 55 gallons per hour (gph) with a range of 378 nautical miles (nm). Pull back to a conservative 8 knots and use 9 gph with a range of 764 nm. Sometimes you have to go all out to beat a storm, and the 52 EF tops around 32.5 knots burning 75 gph. If I have to run out weather systems, I don’t usually care what it takes — I just need to find shelter. Thanks to the anti-vibration engine mounts, acoustic insulation, solid construction and a smooth hull surface, extraneous noise is kept to a bare minimum. While conversing with Chris McCafferty, the international sales director for Riviera, we were able to speak in normal tones, like we were sitting at home.
Cockpit creativity
McCafferty pointed out the features of the 106square-foot cockpit. Our test boat had the optional canvas awning and teak sole, which are both nice touches. There’s a three-seat mezzanine settee, great for watching lines or the view with a teak table for dining. Behind the mezzanine is a large top-loading freezer/fridge, and to
starboard is an outdoor galley with twin Kenyon electric grills, a Vitrifrigo fridge, a sink and a waste bin. The deck has hatches for fish boxes, access to each pod drive (a great idea) and a center lazarette locker for storage. The 52 EF is not a fishing boat to be used for cruising, but rather a cruiser that can be optioned to fish. Add in outriggers, rod holders and padded combing to trick it out. Socially, the cockpit is the place to be. I was curious about the double transom doors and swim platform railings; McCafferty explained that with guests on-board and transom doors open, the platform now becomes a usable piece of real estate, circling the aft transom lounge settee.
Gathering place
Serving crew and/or guests is easy, as the galley is just inside to port. From the cockpit, there appears to be a glass window on the aft bulkhead. But the huge stainless steel-framed glass awning opens out and over the cockpit. Along with the large sliding glass door, the awning blends the indoor and outdoor areas together, whereby the galley becomes the central hub of the yacht. With a U-shaped layout, the galley has everything needed to feed the masses. A Kenyon two-burner cooktop, a Miele microwave oven, a Fisher & Paykel dishwasher, two fridge/freezer drawers (two additional drawers are under the staircase), and more storage areas than you can count make this a very functional area for short or long cruises. Not to be outdone, the engine room is a full, stand-up space, with access to filters, strainers and other preventive maintenance items. Getting to the Onan EQD 17.0kw generator, shore cable, AC compressors and just about any system is fairly easy. Riviera has taken yachting to the next level with their 52 Enclosed Flybridge. Let them bring one to your corner of the world. ★

hen Dan Plath and his friends set off in late July to paddle 50 miles along the southern Lake Michigan shoreline, their journey will be one of adventure and celebration. Plath — an environmental scientist and president and founder of the Northwest Indiana Paddling Association (NWIPA), a non-profit with 600 members — wants to demonstrate support for the National Park Service (NPS) as it celebrates its 100th anniversary this year. The federal agency is facilitating a multi-state effort to create a paddler’s water trail around the world’s fifth largest lake. Lake Michigan waters are known to be unpredictable: Strong winds, storms and waves can force paddlers ashore. But the lake’s southeast shoreline is very hospitable to paddlers. A large segment was designated as a National Recreation Trail in 2011, a part of America’s National Trail System, which is administered by the NPS and U.S. Forest Service. Sandy beaches are plentiful, as are well-marked launch and take-out points. Getting off the water in inclement weather will be no problem, according to Plath. “Our 75-mile stretch between Chicago and New Buffalo is fully-functional and well-used,” says Plath. “We have signs at all the public access sites in Indiana. They show paddlers where they are, the distances between locations, and the history of the trail and local area.” Weather permitting, the group will spend three days touring in kayaks, enjoying Lake Michigan’s blue waters and sandy beaches, while camping among majestic sand dunes at the 25-mile-long Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. Plath and NWIPA volunteers spearheaded much of the water trail development. The group partnered with national lakeshore staff and those at Indiana Dunes State Park. Both offer campsites where paddlers can stop for the night. There are restrooms at access points, and signed and buoyed areas, so paddlers know where to land.

Build it and they will come
“I’m on the lake all the time. Seven or eight years ago on summer days you would see a couple of kayaks if you were lucky,” Plath reflects. “Now you can’t go a half-hour without seeing someone in a kayak coming along. The popularity of the sport has really increased. I don’t know if water trail designation added a lot, but the on-the-ground infrastructure certainly has. Six or seven years ago there were no [canoe and kayak] liveries in northwest Indiana and now we have one in Michigan City and Hammond, and a canoe rental in Portage.”

staffers are experimenting with colors to determine what is most visible to incoming paddlers, Brown says. “The Wisconsin shoreline is kayak-friendly,” notes Green Bay kayaker Ken Braband, an American Canoe Association certified kayaking instructor. “In general, there is a safe place to land just about everywhere. We’re fortunate here. Most of the shoreline is accessible and the Wisconsin DNR has done a lot. Their goal is to have an access point every 5 miles and a camping spot every 10 miles.”

Gateway to the trail
Braband’s favorite coastal trip, one he has done several times, is paddling out to Rock Island State Park on Rock Island, located off the tip of the Door Peninsula. It’s a quiet place, he says, and a peaceful respite. The island’s northern tip is home to Wisconsin’s oldest light station, the Pottawatomie Lighthouse (also known as Rock Island Light), which serves as a beacon for mariners. “Door County is part of the Niagara Escarpment and has pure limestone cliffs. It’s the same on Rock Island,” Braband notes. “I was there camping last September and did a sunset paddle. The sun was hitting the white limestone cliffs and the water was perfectly calm. It was the most beautiful sunset paddle I have ever done. I sat there motionless for a while thinking it was a very special moment.” Water trail organizers anticipate it will be years before the trail is complete, though sections like Plath’s are fully operational. Each state is responsible for its portion, and funding for the effort can be hit or miss. Most agree that further work is needed in various coastal communities where support is critical. Each is a gateway to the trail. In Michigan, for example, many lakeshore communities are still unaware of the project, according to Harry Burkholder, executive director for Land Information Access Association, a Traverse City-based consulting firm that is working on the trail and has developed partnerships with 10 lakeshore communities. “One of the problems on the Michigan side is [the communities] don’t even know it exists,” Burkholder says. “There haven’t been a lot of dollars spent to develop signage in the communities. When I drive into Grand Haven there is no sign saying: Lake Michigan Water Trail access this way. We need that. We’ve worked on promotion and the development of online resources, but if I look up Holland, Michigan online, or look at their visitor’s guide, it tells me nothing. It tells me about local trails and hiking, but not about the Lake Michigan Water Trail. That’s what communities should be thinking about. One of our recommendations was the development of a paddler’s plaza in every one of those communities: A secure system for locking up kayaks and gear… We’ve come up with blueprints to show access sites within communities, and now it’s up to the community to decide whether to implement them.” Michigan DNR officials say the agency, so far, has done

When Plath’s group sets off on July 29, they will paddle just a fraction of the 1,640-mile shoreline route being developed around Lake Michigan, an ambitious project called the Lake Michigan Water Trail. Its partners include organized paddlers, local municipalities, the NPS and state natural resource agencies in Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan. The trail plan coalesced in 2012 at the inaugural Lake Michigan Water Trail Conference held in Saugatuck, Michigan. Tourism and government officials, as well as paddlers from around the lake, all attended. The water trail is part of a “multimodal” (water, bike, hike and automobile) circle route being created to provide recreation and stimulate tourism in Lake Michigan coastal communities. “Our vision is one lake, four states and an all-American travel destination that connects people to adventure and exploration,” explains Diane Banta, outdoor recreation planner for the NPS Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance office in Chicago. “Our job is facilitating the coordination and communication among advocates and stakeholders. We think [the water trail] has national value in creating links. It connects people to two national lakeshores — Indiana Dunes and Sleeping Bear — and it will connect people to things, like the lighthouses, where they can learn the story of local waterways. We’re trying to build a brand so it sits in people’s mind like the Appalachian Trail.” Progress on the water trail differs from state to state; Indiana leads the effort, followed by Wisconsin and then Illinois and Michigan. Brigit Brown, state trails coordinator for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, says her agency is committed to developing the trail along 525 miles of the Wisconsin shoreline. “This is our most significant water trail project in terms of time, effort and money,” Brown says. “That it is multi-state and multi-jurisdictional is a big factor. The growing interest in kayaking is another part. It complements our state outdoor recreation plan, which identified that kayaking is one of the fastest growing recreational pursuits.” Wisconsin’s DNR has built two water-access campsites along Lake Michigan at Point Beach State Forest, 12 miles north of Manitowoc. They are the only campsites constructed specifically for the trail, but others exist along the route. Signs that can be seen from the water telling kayakers where to land are also being developed and installed. Agency
little for the Lake Michigan Water Trail even though Michigan has the majority of its mileage. Paddlers, however, are welcome at state parks on the shoreline. They will not be turned away even if the campgrounds are full. “We prefer them to stay in a designated campsite, but we have accommodated people on the beach areas,” explains Anna Sylvester, northern Michigan field operations section chief for Michigan DNR’s Parks and Recreation division. “People can contact park staff and let them know they arrived in a kayak or canoe, and ask if they can camp on the beach. We haven’t done anything specific for the Lake Michigan Water Trail other than be hospitable. If someone needs to get to food, water, or a post office, we will try to facilitate that and offer them a ride or a shuttle.”

Access points
Illinois paddlers, on the other hand, are benefitting from state, local and grassroots efforts. The National Recreation Trail segment from Indiana to Chicago is complete. Local advocates and the Illinois DNR (IDNR) are now focused on improving access and signage from Chicago north to the Wisconsin border. “Those 25-miles are a crazy quilt of access sites,” exclaims Laurie Morse, a Glencoe, Illinois paddler and coordinator for the Illinois Shore Committee for the Lake Michigan Trails Network, the multi-state planning group working on standards and branding for the trail. “Our goal is to have an access site every 5 miles. Most of the community park districts are overwhelmingly excited about being part of the trail. They think it is very cool, but the devil is in the details.” Park rules about where paddlers can land or launch are inconsistent from area to area, according to Morse. Some charge money while others don’t. Landing on swimming beaches is not allowed and some beach areas are totally off-limits. Morse and others are working to hammer out agreements, but progress, she says, is often limited by the “lack of staff manpower to knit the agreements together.” “We do have a new launch and landing point at Waukegan Harbor, which is a stop on the water trail,” Morse says. “We expect to have a handicap access kayak launch there in 2016. It is the first launch on the Illinois shore equipped to facilitate paddling by boaters with disabilities.” Dave Longo, greenways and trails coordinator for the IDNR, says agency efforts are now focused on completing a northern segment of the trail where IDNR owns property. “What we are trying to complete is an 11.5-mile section of the trail from the Wisconsin border to Waukegan Harbor,” Longo says. “We’re creating access points with location signs so people who come in know there is a water trail. Each stop will have signage and restroom. Camping will be allowed at the Illinois Beach State Park south unit. There will be a concrete ramp at Waukegan and signage that paddlers can see from the water if/when they come
from Wisconsin. There will also be a big beach sign so kayakers can see where to disembark.” Stephen Brede thinks having clearly marked facilities and readily available information will be helpful to paddlers. That wasn’t the case in 2010 when he set off on a 90-day solo paddle around Lake Michigan. That journey was one of six he took over a span of six summers where he paddled around each of the Great Lakes. The Petoskey, Michigan paddler found camping on Lake Michigan was sometimes a challenge. He admits he resorted to stealth camping at times, or paddled up a river until he found public land. In urban areas, he’d locate a public marina and get permission to camp. Private land owners, on more than one occasion, let him camp in their yard or put him up in their cottage. “It was a crapshoot a couple of times and sometimes it was my own fault,” Brede explains. “I’d get a late start or stay out too late. I thought state parks would be an easy place to stop, but I learned quickly that it’s a hassle. I’d land, go register, and the [building] could be a mile from the beach. The [park staff] would say ‘we have these sites’ and I’d have to walk back, get my gear, and then go to a site and camp next to a big RV. It would cost me $29 and I’d have to walk 5 miles. It was problematic. “There are a lot of contrasts on Lake Michigan. You have remote areas in the Upper Peninsula and the industrial corridor in Gary, Indiana and southern Chicago. In between you have two shores: The east side has beautiful sandy beaches and the west side is rockier. I was extremely lucky to be able to do all five Great Lakes. What was most inspirational was being out in nature after living such a sheltered, indoor life and starting to fear things like rain.” ★

VOYAGEURS NATIONAL PARK, MINNESOTA
A trip to VOYAGEURS NATIONAL PARK is the ultimate wilderness getaway. Located on the Minneapolis/Canadian border, the park comprises four interconnected waterways — Rainy, Kabetogama, Namakan and Sand Point Lakes — providing 344 square miles of navigable waters. With this much nature, there’s no shortage of things to do: You can watch for Bald Eagles while hiking through Boreal forests; fish for walleye, northern pike, sturgeon and lake trout; camp under the stars and maybe catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights; or spend all day cruising on the water. Guided boat tours depart from Rainy and Kabetogama in the summer and fall. Visitors may use public boat launches at any of the park’s three visitor centers at Rainy, Kabetogama and Ash River Lakes. Most resorts are located outside the park and may also have launch ramps. There are no fees to enter the park, but you may need to dig into your pocket for permits or reservations. Personal watercrafts (PWCs) are prohibited in the park.
Perhaps best known outside the state as the lake referenced by Prince in “Purple Rain,” LAKE MINNETONKA is well-known within Minnesota as an excellent spot for recreational boating — whether that includes cruising, fishing, tubing, wakeboarding, or setting off on a stand-up paddleboard (SUP). Lake Minnetonka is located in a cluster of lakes in southeast Minnesota, less than an hour from Minneapolis. There are a few public boat launches, one of the largest being in Lake Minnetonka Regional Park located on the lake’s southwest shore. Other boat launches around the lake include Maxwell Bay, Halsted Bay, Carson Bay and North Arm. Ride on the 1906 restored steamboat, Minnehaha, operated by the Museum of Lake Minnetonka in Excelsior. After a day of fun out on the water, pull up to public docks in the lively town of Wayzata for a cold one and a bite to eat at 6Smith, or check out Lord Fletcher’s Old Lake Lodge in Spring Park for food, volleyball and live music.

xploring every nook and cranny of the Great Lakes would take a lifetime, and it would cover only a fraction of the rich diversity the region has to offer. There are thousands of inland lakes scattered throughout Great Lakes states — Minnesota alone has more than 14,800! — and each offers its own unique character and ambiance. Some, like Torch Lake in Michigan, attract crowds of fun-loving vacationers. Others, like Lake Wawasee in Indiana, are perfect for a quiet weekend off the grid. Water-skiers, kayakers, cruisers, anglers — there’s a lake for every type of boater. Arriving for a weekend or a longer stay is easy, too. Trailering makes it easy to hitch your boat, pack up the family for the weekend and explore these inland lakes. Since many inland lakes are popular vacation or camping destinations, even the smallest often offer basic amenities, a few public boat launches and a spot to grab lunch. Below, we’ve compiled a few of our favorite inland lakes to check out this summer.
LAKE GENEVA, WISCONSIN

CHAIN O’ LAKES, ILLINOIS Why choose one lake to visit when you can have 15 interconnected lakes? The CHAIN O’LAKES in northeastern Illinois is a series of lakes connected by the Fox River. According to the Fox Waterway Agency (which manages the lakes), the waterway sees more boat usage per acre than any other inland waterway in the U.S. With this much shoreline, there’s no shortage of places to stay and activities to try. One place to start is the Chain O’Lakes State Park, which borders Grass, Marie and Nippersink Lakes, as well as the Fox River. The state park contains more than 230 campsites; hiking, biking and equestrian trails; and permit hunting. Anglers can expect to catch bluegill, largemouth bass, walleye, crappie, muskie, northern pike, bullhead, catfish, and yellow/white bass. All boaters using the lakes must pay a user fee to the Fox Waterway Agency; however, there is no charge to launch boats.
4
A popular getaway for Chicago and Milwaukee city-dwellers, LAKE GENEVA has just about everything you can ask for, on and off the water. Boaters interested in the usual lake-trip activities — such as cruising, skiing and tubing — can access the lake through six public boat launches, most of which charge a launch fee depending on boat size. Marinas around the lake also offer fishing charters, as well as boat and personal watercraft rentals. What sets Lake Geneva apart, however, is the sheer number of off-water activities: There are outdoor summer concerts, kids camps, hot-air balloon rides, winery tours, laser tag, spas, a magic show, golfing, restaurants and more to explore. Those looking to stay overnight have no shortage of options, from the historic Gilded Age-era Baker House to the Grand Geneva Resort & Spa.

TORCH LAKE, MICHIGAN
If it wasn’t for the lack of palm trees and the chilly water, you might mistake the clear turquoise waters of TORCH LAKE for those of the Caribbean. Long and narrow with white sand, Torch Lake is Michigan’s second largest inland lake. Resorts, vacation homes and small towns dot the coast, making it a fairly peaceful lake for a quiet weekend of boating, kayaking, fishing, tubing, windsurfing, jet-skiing and sailing. To launch your boat in Torch’s jewel-toned waters, check out public access ramps in Torch Lake Township, Alden or Eastport. For a more social boating outing, be sure to raft up near the popular sandbar just offshore in the lake’s southern corner. If you’re lucky, you might be able to grab lunch at the Burger Barge that floats through the area. It is recommended to time your trip carefully if you plan on checking out the sandbar, however: Local residents are trying to take legal action against increasingly popular and raucous sandbar parties. It is estimated that last year’s Fourth of July attracted 10,000 people to the sandbar. Visit Dockside, located at the entrance to Clam Lake, which is the perfect place to grab a bite to eat while sitting on the lakeside patio.
FINGER LAKES, NEW YORK
Forget a weekend trip: An entire summer could be spent exploring the eleven inland lakes that 6 make up New York’s FINGER LAKES. Located right off Lake Ontario, the Finger Lakes region is known for its hiking, small towns and excellent wines. Each lake offers boat access and a unique atmosphere. For example, Cayuga is the longest of the Finger Lakes, with beaches, parks and marinas dotting its shores. Ithaca College sits on the southern tip, and Water to Wine boat tours run from the towns of Ovid and Aurora. Another popular option is Seneca, the deepest and largest of the lakes. Boaters can check out the many wineries surrounding the lake or the annual National Lake Trout Derby. Canandaigua, Conesus and Onondaga are smaller with many vacation homes nearby. Hemlock Lake, the least developed of the bunch, only allows boats under 17 feet with motors 10 hp or less.
LAKE GEORGE, NEW YORK
7
There’s a reason the nickname “Queen of American Lakes” has stuck with LAKE GEORGE. The 32-mile long, 3-mile wide lake located on the edge of the Adirondack Mountains has just about everything you could ask for. Known for its clear, deep waters, Lake George has islands, is great for watersports and has unparalleled cruising grounds. The shoreline mainly consists of wilderness, vacation homes, campsites, marinas and boat-accessible restaurants. Lake Avenue Launch, Lake George Beach and Northwest Beach are just a few locations with public boat launches. For boaters looking for land and water adventures, the surrounding Adirondack region is chock-full of hiking trails and whitewater rafting. History buffs can check out Fort Ticonderoga nearby. For a more historical take on the lake, be sure to take a cruise with the Lake George Steamboat Company, which has been in operation on Lake George since 1817.

LAKE WAWASEE, INDIANA
8
As Indiana’s largest natural lake, LAKE WAWASEE has prime real estate for a weekend of boating, waterskiing, sailing, windsurfing, swimming and more. Lake Wawasee is in northern Indiana, just southeast of the town of Syracuse. Boaters may access private boat ramps of any of the five local marinas for a small fee; or, they can trek down to the Wawasee Family Fishing Site in the southeast corner of the lake to use a free two-lane boat ramp. The Family Fishing Site also provides about 10 acres of public fishing area. Other notable features of Wawasee include a small sandbar about 500 yards off the southern shore, excellent Fourth of July fireworks and “Boat-In Worship” most Sunday mornings in front of the Oakwood Resort for a number of denominations.

SALT FORK LAKE, OHIO
9
With 2,952 acres, an unlimited horsepower policy and 10 boat launch ramps, Salt Fork Lake is the place for boaters looking to put their engines to the test. But anglers, kayakers and canoeists can enjoy calm water in the designated no-wake zones, too. Halfway between Columbus, Ohio and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Salt Fork Lake is a picturesque retreat. The lake is surrounded by the 17,229-acre Salt Fork State Park, which is Ohio’s largest state park, often referred to as the “crown jewel of state parks.” The park offers plenty of hiking trails, a resort lodge with swimming pool, an archery range, an 18-hole golf course, basketball courts and a sprawling 2,500-foot beach. Two marinas on Salt Fork Lake — Sugartree Marina and Salt Fork Marina — offer 69 rental docks, fuel stations and a variety of rental boats. For dog lovers, Salt Fork State Park has a 1-acre dog park with lake access, so your canine crew can practice its doggy paddle. Don’t want to leave? Boaters are allowed to camp on their boats in no-wake zones within 50 yards of shore.
LAKE OF THE WOODS, ONTARIO
10
At 70 miles long and wide, LAKE OF THE WOODS offers endless opportunities for exploration. This massive lake stretches between Ontario, Manitoba and Minnesota. After the Great Lakes, it’s the sixth largest freshwater lake located (partially) in the U.S. Boaters can raft up near many of the lake’s 14,000-plus islands, many of which have ruins or historical sites, such as Chapel Island, Copeland Island, Magnuson’s Island and Massacre Island. Take a trip to Yacht Club Island to visit the Royal Lake of the Woods Yacht Club, which was founded in 1903. For those prone to island-fever, there are also plenty of communities on shore worth a visit: In the north, there’s city-like Kenora; the pristine Morson sits to the east; fishingfriendly Nestor Falls and historic Sioux Narrows are also to the east. There are plenty of fishing opportunities and bird watching for piping plover and bald eagles.
11
MUSKOKA LAKES, ONTARIO Called “quintessential cottage country” by National Geographic, the MUSKOKA LAKES region offers plenty of options for both adrenaline junkies and relaxation-seekers. Just two hours north of Toronto, the region boasts more than 2,000 lakes — the largest of which include Lakes Muskoka, Joseph and Rosseau. Public boat launches and docks are common. The region’s generally calm waters attract a number of canoe and kayak enthusiasts. Those looking to go fast, however, can take comfort in the fact that just about every type of water recreation takes place at Muskoka: Wakeboarding, waterskiing, slalom skiing, knee boarding and parasailing. Jet ski rentals are widely available, as are boat rentals. Anglers should look into the regions fishing options, as some outfitters provide guided tours to the best fishing spots. After a long day shredding or snoozing on the water, boaters can head to a small village for a quiet dinner or a larger resort. In Muskoka, it’s all about the options.
ALLEGHENY RESERVOIR, PENNSYLVANIA The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers completed the Kinzua Dam in 1965 to create the 24-mile long ALLEGHENY RESERVOIR. Despite being a manmade lake, the Allegheny region is a great place to get off the grid and enjoy nature. The Allegheny National Forest, Allegany State Park and Allegany Indian Reservation of the Seneca Nation surround the reservoir, which spans the border of Pennsylvania and New York. The area contains 10 campgrounds, a few of which can only be accessed by hiking or by boat. The Allegheny Reservoir is also great for the usual boating activities: Canoeing, kayaking, cruising, fishing for muskie and walleye, waterskiing, swimming — the list goes on and on. Boaters can find six boat launches throughout the National Forest, or check out
12
Kinzua-Wolf Run Marina. If time permits, head toward the Kinzua Dam; visitors may walk out on part of the dam for great views of the rest of the lake and surrounding forest.

hunder Bay, Ontario, — lovingly referred to as “The Lakehead” and “Canada’s Gateway to the West” — is one of Canada’s greatest outdoor adventure cities. Located on the expansive bay of the same name, the city is an interesting mix of European and Aboriginal cultures, and is the largest city on the largest Great Lake: Lake Superior. My husband, Jerry, and I enjoyed breathtaking and nonstop north shore gunkholing during our circumnavigation of Lake Superior on Monarch, our 52-foot Halvorson raised pilothouse trawler. Prince Arthur’s Landing, Marina Park and CR Railway Station
We approached Thunder Bay from our anchorage in Otter Cove at Black Bay Point to the east and knew we were close when we saw the signature landmark, the Sleeping Giant. According to one Chippewa legend, during a time of starvation, Naniboujou — the spirit of deepsea water — killed his wife during a heated argument. Terrorized by visions of his dead wife, he staggered and fell backward into Lake Superior. The Great Spirit turned him into everlasting stone along the shoreline, where he rests to this day. The contemporary but less romantic explanation is that the formation is an erosion-resistant mesa. Either way, it remains one of the most spectacular headlands on Lake Superior and the highest vertical rise in Ontario at 1,247 feet above lake level. Further on, we spot the entrance to Thunder Bay, guarded by two massive sentinels: Pie Island and Cape Thunder, another pair of breathtaking headlands on the lake. Aptly named, the Cape’s huge bluffs often create strong, thundering downdrafts. But fear not; the entrance to the Bay is wide and clear with the exception of Hare Island and its reef, which are well marked on the chart.
Drop Anchor Thunder Bay itself has just a few anchorages, including the Welcome Islands, MacKenzie Bay and Amethyst Harbour (the latter two northeast of the city), but some are marginal because of wind exposure from various directions. If the wind is right, check out Sawyer Bay, where you can dinghy in and stretch your legs in Sleeping Giant Provincial Park. On the Sibley Peninsula, the park features more than 50 miles of hiking trails through boreal forests, 200 campsites and inland lakes for canoe and kayak exploration, as well as indescribable views of the Lake Superior coast. It’s definitely worth a day excursion. Take the 2-mile trail to the “chest” of the Giant for a bird’s-eye view of Thunder Bay surrounded by the rugged bluffs of the peninsula,
wide open water of Lake Superior, and on a clear day, just a hint of Isle Royale in the southern distance. Even if you decide to anchor in the bay, you simply must get up close and personal with the city itself. Just clear the small group of Welcome Islands, which lie about 5 miles south of the city, and look for the iconic, high-water Thunder Bay Main Lighthouse marking the entrance to Thunder Bay’s inner harbor. Once there, three entrances punctuate a 4.5-mile-long breakwall (with the middle entrance most often used by recreational boaters). Stay in the marked channel to avoid any shoaling. Within the harbor lies Prince Arthur’s Landing at Marina Park: 35 acres of waterfront and parkland with three main piers, 271 slips with water, 30- and 50-amp hookups, walkways and picnic areas, fuel and pumpout, restrooms, showers, laundry, 24-hour security, and a common area where you may clear customs if you are just entering Canadian water. We docked Monarch at the transient dock alongside Pier 3. Another facility for boaters is the Thunder Bay Yacht Club, several miles to the south along the Mission River. We contacted them, hoping to view the facility while in town, and a very friendly member and dock chairman, Richard Matheson, not only welcomed us warmly but also picked us up for the 15-minute drive to the facility. This hospitable club has a visitor’s dock with slips for small boats and offers reciprocity to visiting yacht club members; however, it is a bit removed from shopping and restaurants.

Discover downtown In downtown Thunder Bay, the focal point of the waterfront is the beautifully restored, Chateauesque Canadian National (CN) Railway station, which provides a historical contrast to the ultra-modern, glass Office of the Registrar across Water Street. Dragon Boat Festival — a feast for the eyes and for competitive spirits. For some time on the links, try one of the two city-operated public golf courses — Chapples Golf Course and Strathcona Golf Course — or several privately owned courses.
Tour Thunder Bay The city’s rich history is on display in a variety of selfguided walking tours. My favorite is the Thunder Bay North tour, as it begins and ends adjacent to the docks at Marina Park and is concentrated in the commercial area that was formerly downtown Port Arthur. Taking less than an hour, the tour includes 23 of the most historical and architecturally significant buildings the area has to offer, including Prince Arthur Hotel, Ottawa House, Trinity United Church and Masonic Hall. Be sure to visit the Thunder Bay Historical Museum to pick up a tour brochure. Sports fans and history buffs alike should also stop at the nearby Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame and Museum. The city’s efficient transit system is a good way to explore even farther, so you can visit the Fort William Historical Park on the Kaministiquia (Kam) River a few miles from the waterfront. The park is a meticulous recreation of the 19th century original, with 57 heritage and modern buildings on 250 acres. One of the more interesting structures within the fort is the canoe shed, where you can view — in various stages of construction — the oversize canoes that long ago plied the Great Lakes. Revel in the spectacular Northwest Ontario nature while hiking Silver Falls, one of the classic Thunder Bay hiking trails also along the Kam River, with plenty of lookouts over Lake Superior. Want to get your hands dirty? Amethysts are the official gemstone of Ontario — even the local 9-foot-tall Terry Fox monument has a foundation made out of Thunder Bay amethyst — and you can try your hand at finding your very own gem at

trading, silver mining and grain transshipment — aided by the opening of the Soo Locks in 1855 and the completion of the Canadian Pacific Railway to the western prairies. Even today, this port boasts the largest grain elevator and grain-shipping complex in the world, and is a center for production of paper and other pulp products. Just across the tracks from the station, Marina Park features a splash pad designed for cooling off; on the warm days we spent in town, scores of kids of all ages frolicked in its spray. The park is home to a large display of public art, including “Traveller’s Return” — stylized, giant aluminum water droplets with a reflective, mirrored finish. Another work of art is the “Jiigew” (meaning “by the water” in Ojibwe), a pair of bent I-beams, each 65 feet high, installed with rows of cascading LED lights. At night, they impart inspirational messages for those who know Morse Code. On Pier 2, three elevated cedar lanterns (Paleogirls, Swimmers and Ulysses) feature colorful artwork depicting man’s relationship to water and nature. Written art is featured in a dozen locations throughout the park, providing an opportunity to pause and reflect on the spirit and culture of Northwest Ontario. For indoor art, try the public Thunder Bay Art Gallery with its permanent collection of more than 1,500 Aboriginal works, or the fine, private and cooperative galleries. Baggage Building Art Centre, located in a renovated, historic freight shed at Marina Park, showcases work by local artists and offers workshops for aspiring artists of all ages. As the city’s main event and festival location, Marina Park is center stage for Canada Day celebrations, the summer-long, Wednesday night Live on the Waterfront concert series and Thunder Bay’s Annual Blues Festival held in July. When we visited, a five-piece band of seasoned blues musicians called the Bluesbangers entertained us. Late July heralds the Thunder Bay

the Amethyst Mine Panorama. As the largest deposit in Canada, you can take a guided or self-guided tour to “dig your own” stone. There are other open-pit mines in Thunder Bay, including Blue Point Amethyst Mine and Bill’s Old Amethyst Mine. Thunder Bay has plenty of opportunities for urban fishing, or “the fancy name for fishing in the city,” says Thunder Bay angler and journalist Gord Ellis. “Thunder Bay is unique because it has both cold and warm water species... All of them are available within the city.” Cast a line in the Kam River and Current River — both excellent spots for urban fishing. “I learned to fish the streams within the city and the fishing has remained quite good,” Ellis says. “If you’ have any interest in fishing, Thunder Bay is a good place to come.” Spend the afternoon touring vibrant and exotic plants at the Centennial Botanical Conservatory. Built in 1967 as a Centennial project, the Conservatory offers a year-round escape to view lush plants and flowers from around the world, waterfalls and wishing ponds. A historic centerpiece of downtown Thunder Bay is the Pagoda, the oldest operating tourist bureau in Canada. The unusual far-eastern style building, dating back to 1909, still provides travel information to Thunder Bay area tourists. The Ontario Heritage Site’s knowledgeable staff provided us with literature to area attractions and local dining recommendations, resulting in a fine pickerel dinner with “the best buns in town” at the Prospector Steak House, one of Thunder Bay’s top ten restaurants.
Local tastes Speaking of fine dining, there are enticing gastronomic options for every taste in more than 200 restaurants in town; more than 40 of those are within walking distance of Prince Arthur’s Landing Marina. A perennial favorite is the Caribou Restaurant + Wine Bar, which helps you explore local flavor, featured Ontario VQA

wines and the chef’s personal take on a Canadian staple, poutine: Shoestring frites, thunder oak cheese curds and braised short rib gravy. One of Thunder Bay’s culinary highlights is Uptown Cut, a Canadian steakhouse with a modern twist. The owner focuses on sustainable artisanal foods and supporting the local beef industry. The New York Times’ Sunday, January 17, 2016 issue provided a rave review of this establishment, including kudos to the foie gras croquette and wagyu beef, which the reviewer reported, “was the best steak of my life.” Located inside the CN Station, the Breakwater Taphouse is “a hidden gem with hard-to-find beer,” according to Thunder Bay’s The Walleye magazine. Nearby, the waterfront Bight Restaurant & Bar offers a farm-to-table menu paired with an eclectic wine and cocktail list. In keeping with Canada’s diverse taste in cuisine, the Masala Grille provides a unique Indian and Thai experience at a reasonable price. Try the curry cauliflower soup for starters. At The Silver Birch Restaurant, start with the wild mushroom tart, followed by a main course of tarragon rabbit, accompanied by homemade bread with blueberry infused oil. Finnish cuisine and culture is reflected at both The Hoito (housed in the historic Finnish Labour Temple) and the Scandinavian Home Restaurant. No matter what time of day, try the Finnish pancakes.

Jumping off point Before you leave “The Lakehead,” swing by Sail Superior.com Yacht Charters on Pier 3 for a 90-minute harbor cruise, a 3.5-hour Welcome Island excursion or a variety of other private cruises, including the Twilight Wine and Cheese cruise. To hunt for the “catch of the day,” hop on Archie Hoogsteen’s boat, the owner of Archie’s Fishing Charter’s, also located at Prince Arthur Landing’s Marina. You only need to bring aboard a cooler, a fishing license and comfortable shoes. As you head out of Thunder Bay, consider stopping at Thompson Island. Area cruisers have adopted the island just south of Pie Island and constructed a free 240-foot dock and boardwalk in Wray Bay. The narrow entrance is roughly two-thirds of a mile from the island’s northeastern tip, and dockside soundings vary from 2 to 9 feet at the far western end of the boardwalk. With amenities — including a barbecue area, rustic benches and a fire pit — weekends can get crowded here; if the docks are full, rafting is expected. It’s definitely worth it to partake in the steaming sauna, followed by a plunge from the dock into frigid Lake Superior. If you want to use the fire pit or sauna, bring your own wood; over the years, the island’s deadwood has been depleted. Charlevoix, MI Peaceful log home retreat built for outdoor entertaining.
L
isten to the peaceful, cascading lake-fed waterfall while snuggling up next to the gas firepit along the 100-foot shoreline of this beautiful Town and Country log home. Enjoy entertaining in the full, outdoor kitchen, just steps from the water’s edge. This lakefront retreat in Charlevoix, Michigan is the epitome of year-round relaxation. Located in the coveted Raspberry Bay on Lake Charlevoix’s northern coast, the home is in an idyllic setting: Sheltered from the wind, looking out over the crystalline waters and close to charming downtown Charlevoix. “It offers tranquility, beautiful views and it’s calming to watch the boats, skiers and Wednesday night sailboat races,” says homeowner Kathy Kirby. Charlevoix holds a special place in the Kirby’s hearts; Kathy’s husband Tom vacationed there since 1948, and as a couple, they started visiting in the early ’70s. When the last of their kids went off to college, they moved to Charlevoix permanently and built this custom, 5,000-square-foot, four-bedroom log home. “Although we built it in 1997, we designed it with an open concept, which wasn’t even a concept back then,” Kathy says. “It’s definitely set up for entertaining; it has a

fully-stocked bar, a refrigerated wine cellar for 800 bottles, and a gourmet kitchen with two Sub Zero refrigerators, a double and farmhouse sink, an oversized island and a walk-in pantry. The knotty pine interior boasts a stone fireplace, in-floor heating, a main master suite complete with fireplace and lakeside sunroom, an upstairs game/guest suite, and each bedroom has its own private bathroom — a welcome touch for family reunions. The Kirby’s spend the majority of their summers entertaining in the full, outdoor kitchen housed under the log gazebo. Situated on nearly 6 wooded acres is a three-bedroom, two-full-bath guesthouse with a full unfinished basement, and a 3,600-square-foot pole barn — half of which is heated to house the ultimate “man cave.” Down by the water, a deep-water dock and hydraulic lift can accommodate just about any boat. “Lake Charlevoix offers multiple coves to anchor out in for picnicking. You can also take your boat from here to any destination worldwide.” Kathy says. “The city of Charlevoix has a beautiful new waterfront where you can relax on your boat and listen to the entertainment in East Park’s band shell. It’s just an energetic town and the vibe is wonderful.” ★

Cleveland’s transient harbor blends boating and city living.
B
“
oatgating” is a popular activity at Cleveland’s Rock and Dock at North Coast Harbor Marina: Browns fans raft-up their boats on game day, grill and hang out, then walk less than a half-mile to FirstEnergy Stadium for the game — or continue to grill! As a transient-only marina, Rock and Dock is the perfect stop for boaters who want to grab a quick bite to eat in the city or stay for a few days of sightseeing without paying for a year-round slip. “It’s an awesome place to hang out and a fun place to be,” says general manager Larry Orlowski. Until Rock and Dock opened in July 2014, Orlowski says options for boaters looking for transient slips in Cleveland were limited. Rock and Dock, which is located just behind the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, is an easy gateway to the city’s many museums, restaurants and events. It also doubles as new waterfront access for Clevelanders, which until recently has remained largely undeveloped. So far, it has been a hit: Spots at the marina sell out especially fast for holidays like Memorial Day and the Fourth of July. The marina’s 53 slips can be reserved ahead of time
LAKELANDBOATING.COM
or day-of, and can accommodate boats from 26 to 98 feet. Slip rates are $2 per foot for overnight stays, $1 per foot for short visits (four hours or less), and extra on holidays or for special events, such as a Cleveland Brown’s games. Boaters can dock for up to 14 days in a 30-day period. As word has spread, Orlowski says they’ve had more organizations hosting “boat rendezvous” at the marina — sometimes for groups of up to 35 boats. For those who would rather stay on the waterfront than venture into the city, Rock and Dock rents out paddleboats, stand-up paddle boards, kayaks and jet-skis. Although Rock and Dock doesn’t have any repair services or gas, it does provide pump-out and offers a small convenience store, showers and a laundromat. Overnight boaters can rest easy with onsite security and gated access. Orlowski says boaters should keep an eye on the marina for future amenities, additions and events in the coming years: “We plan on expanding every year and hope to make it a destination not only for Clevelanders but boaters everywhere.” ★

When my dad and I first made the trip north to Michigan’s famed Les Cheneaux Islands in the late 1980s, we’d just purchased our first wooden boat together. It only took one trip to quickly become enamored with the northern shore of Lake Huron. In 1995, we found ourselves once again headed north — this time, to track-down an elusive 1938 Chris-Craft 24-foot Sportsman that was rumored to be tucked away in an old warehouse. On the way to see that boat, however, we literally had to climb over another boat first — a smaller 1938 21-foot Deluxe Utility. To say it was a “diamond in the rough” would be an understatement. Even without her engine and much of her hardware, her graceful lines and pedigree were evident a nautical mile away. While our attention soon focused on the boat we’d come to see, something about this relic from the past drew us close. No sooner had we sealed the deal on the Sportsman with a handshake, the next words out of my dad’s mouth were, “now about that Utility...” And just like that, it happened. While three boats do not make a fleet, I think we were both still in stunned disbelief throughout the drive home. By 1996, the now-named Jennifer Anne (fondly named after my sister) had spent the winter in the very same boat shop to which she was delivered in 1938: The storied E.J. Mertaugh Boat Works on the Hessel waterfront. Through the skilled craftsmanship of the boat works team, this once-forlorn ChrisCraft was returned to her former glory (and then some). Remarkably, most of the original wood was preserved and restored, and an original 1938 engine located and rebuilt. She very quickly became part of our family, and countless fond memories from the past 20 summers can still be seen in her wake. Although my dad passed away in the spring of 2015, his presence will forever be felt aboard the Jennifer Anne — especially when plying the waters of Lake Huron amidst the islands of Les Cheneaux. For this son, nothing captures the essence of vintage boating, and the man my dad was, as does the above photo. —Jeff Rogers, Grand Rapids, Michigan Email kbush@lakelandboating.com if you have a Classic Craft with a good story to share!
