s July rolls around, we’re entering prime summer boating season, filled with long days of sunshine, afternoons on the water and evenings spent grilling. While some of you may still be practicing social distancing and some of you may be escaping to the water to unwind, I think everyone can agree that it’s never a bad time to plot out your next boating Rochester’s Harborfest adventure — no matter how big or small. You’ll have plenty of new and perhaps known destinations to choose from in this month’s Summer Hotspots issue. Our Port of Call takes us to Rochester, New York, an excellent city for a weekend away for history, art and craft beer lovers alike (p. 38). If you’d like to really change things up for the remainder of your summer, check out our feature on 10 notable inland lakes worth visiting (p. 34). There is a lake for everyone, whether you’re looking to fish, get away from the hustle and bustle, or get your adrenaline pumping with some watersports. If your kids are getting a little older, maybe this is the summer when they take more responsibility on the boat. Diane Seltzer has good tips on ways to encourage your kids to step up as first mate. Mackinac Marine Services in Saint Ignace Receives Small Shipyard Grant
The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded a Maritime Administration’s Small Shipyard Grant that amounts to $752,933 to Mackinac Marine Services in Saint Ignace, Michigan. It also has been announced that Star Line Mackinac Island Hydro-Jet Ferry will match that amount. The money will go toward improvements and facility updates. The facility will now be able to lift up to 200-tons for repairs or inspections thanks to a travel lift that will be completed in 2021.

ost boat owners rarely give their air conditioning (A/C) systems a second thought — until they stop working. The key to keeping your air conditioner operating reliably is regular maintenance. Here’s how to keep your system cranking out cool goodness on even the hottest of summer days.

Keep it fresh A/C systems have three major components: An evaporator, where “boiling” refrigerant absorbs heat from air; a compressor, which pushes the refrigerant through the system; and a condenser, where the refrigerant is cooled prior to being returned to the evaporator. Marine A/C units are typically “direct expansion” designs, which means they pump refrigerant directly to air handlers located in the boat’s interior. Larger vessels may instead use a chilled-water system, which cools and circulates cold fresh water through the air handlers instead of refrigerant. Marine A/C units work by exchanging heat with circulating raw water (i.e. the water your boat is floating in). When problems occur, one of the most common causes is lack of water flowing through the system. Restricted water flow can cause a lack of cool air and more frequent on/off cycling as the unit struggles to operate. The first step in cooling water system maintenence is checking the cooling water intake strainer, which is located between the raw water intake seacock and the unit’s pump. Shut off the seacock, then remove the strainer basket and make sure it’s clear of debris and growth. Once the strainer basket is removed, open the seacock briefly to ensure nothing is clogged. The fine, stainless steel mesh baskets found in many A/C strainers can erode rapidly due to the constant water flow of water, so it’s a good idea to keep spares on hand. Next up is checking the condition of all hose runs and connections. Begin at the seacock and work your way through the system. Look for issues such as leaks, corroded or broken hose clamps, chafe, collapsed hoses and those showing signs of age or deterioration. Raw water cooling hoses should also be double clamped if there is sufficient hose barb to allow it. Hose failure can be particularly bad for owners who continually run the A/C while the vessel is left unattended. If a raw water-cooling hose fails with no one onboard, the continuous pumping of water can

easily sink a boat. Oxygenated seawater produced by this constant flow also encourages marine growth to take up residence and thrive in your cooling system. Another issue that can restrict cooling water flow is the buildup of scale in the condenser coils. The coils should be flushed periodically with a weak solution of biodegradable acid to remove both scale and marine growth, typically every two to five years. Back flushing the system using dock or pressurized water is another option if the system is clogged. Just add air In addition to cooling water, an A/C system also needs plenty of air flow. Quality, properly fitted air filters are crucial to protecting your A/C against dirt and dust. Most systems will have two filters — one behind the return air grill and one at the evaporator unit. Air filters should be cleaned monthly, typically by vacuuming, or removal and washing with plain water. Allow them to dry thoroughly before reinstallation. Don’t forget to check the condensate pan. This is the tray below your A/C unit that collects the water (humidity) pulled from the air as it’s being cooled. The two things to look for here are proper drainage and corrosion of the pan itself. The pan should be plumbed so that it drains overboard or into a sump, where the water is then pumped overboard. Allowing condensate to drain into the bilge is not recommended. A simple way to check the drain for proper operation is to temporarily plug the drain and pour water into the pan, which should then drain away within 30 seconds or so of being unplugged. If the drain hose is clogged, it can be blown clear with compressed air or pressurized water. If the pan is corroded, particularly to the point it can no longer contain the condensation, it should be repaired or replaced. Maintenance requirements for a chilled water A/C system are similar to those for a direct-expansion system. Chill water systems have to be filled with water to operate properly (similar to refrigerant in a direct expansion system). They will typically have pressure gauges, allowing you to check for leaks or air in the system, which should be part of your regularly scheduled maintenance. With a little bit of elbow grease it’s easy to keep cool. ★

What to consider for your next fishing trip.

ayak fishing can be a great choice for anglers when a big boat isn’t feasible. Kayaks are less expensive, easily transported and perfect for solo or buddy fishing. They can also be outfitted with a trolling motor. However, kayaking can also be strenuous. Before setting out on a kayak fishing expedition, learn how to paddle, to upright the kayak, to get back in after falling out and how to aid another kayaker. Taking a class and kayaking with others are smart choices. For a great day on the water, here are some additional kayak fishing tips to make it safe and enjoyable. Before going out Your kayak hull should be in good condition. Wear a Coast Guard-approved kayak life jacket and a loud whistle (a Great Lakes requirement) during daylight use. For sundown to sunup treks, add a headlamp and three red flares or the Orion Locator Electronic SOS Beacon. Check the weather often and prepare to come back early. Get weather information from your cell phone, VHS radio, or you can text a Great Lakes buoy. Create a float plan including the color of your kayak, time leaving and returning, fishing location, buddy’s name and vehicle information. Give it to a responsible person or marina manager. Don’t forget to dress for potential immersion. Layer non-cotton fabrics under a wetsuit or dry pants and tops for added insulation. Wear bright outerwear since kayaks are harder for large boats to see, especially in fog, at dusk and before sunrise. Pack smart (and safe!) Your life jacket should fit well for paddling and be designed for comfort against high-backed seats. The best ones have rod holder tabs, D-rings, loops, reflective strips and pockets for holding light tackle, a VHF radio or cell phone. Bring food and water, rain gear, a spray skirt, hat, sunscreen, insect repellant, a first aid kit and metal cutters for cutting lures in case one impales you. Don’t forget a throw bag, tow ropes (required in Canada — don’t forget a passport) and fishing gear. It’s easy to get tangled up in anchor lines, fishing lines and line debris, so keep a blunt-tip knife handy and avoid wearing anything around your neck. Forget the alcohol! It is illegal in all paddle craft, in all states, and subject to BUI laws.
On the water Headwinds and currents can relocate your kayak. Consider a mobile anchor system to keep you in place while creating stability for casting. However, make sure you don’t overload the kayak — arrange cargo to leave some freeboard space. Accidents happen and kayaks turn over. Sunscreen, sweat and even arthritis can affect your hold on a paddle or fishing rod. Secure them with a leash, with float bag essentials tethered or tied down with bungee cords. Identify dangerous areas and expect rocks or debris under and out of the water. Polarized sunglasses may help you spot submerged items. If you find yourself moving toward submerged items, lean forward, not away, and paddle in the opposite direction to prevent the kayak from flipping. Casting There’s not much space in a kayak, especially when casting or trying to pull in “the big one.” The casting action and pulling in a fish feels different while sitting in a kayak. Balance is important. Work out a system of when and where you cast since the person in the bow has a broader casting area and no one wants to be hit in the head with the rod tip or a hook. Extra fishing tips Keep tools out of the way but in reach. Pikes and muskies thrash about coming out of the water. Watch the lure and the fish’s teeth, then grab it behind the eyes or the gill plates to bring in the fish. It may sound simple but with catch and release, you can tire the fish enough to handle it without weakening it. I/O boats command serious attention in the Great Lakes. et’s be honest. We’ve been talking about outboards for quite awhile now, and we’ve gotten swept up in the excitement as manufacturers add more outboard-powered models to their lineups. “Hashtag, trending,” as the kids would say. I spent much of my Midwestern childhood in the ’70s and ’80s playing aboard (and behind) outboard-powered boats, so I understand the appeal. However, I also made countless precious memories on sterndrive cruisers, and that got me wondering: Are these former family favorites destined to go gentle into that good night, or do they still have an important place in our boating lives? Why go I/O? Sterndrive is another name for inboard-outboard (I/O) drive. The inboard engine sits just forward of the boat’s transom, while the drive unit lies outside the hull. When I was growing up, it was largely a given that a midsize family cruiser would have I/O power. When the outboard craze hit, the boating world was abuzz with the benefits of outboard power on those same midsize cruisers. We stopped talking about the benefits of sterndrives but, according to industry insiders, those benefits never went away. “Sterndrives don’t take up your swim platform, and people like that,” says Kyle Stenzel, president of Spring Brook Marina. This family-owned company, founded in 1961 in the Illinois River town of Seneca, Illinois, now has additional locations in Chicago, St. Louis and the boating meccas of Door County, Wisconsin; Catawba Island, Ohio; and Traverse City, Michigan. Two of its brands, Jeanneau and Pardo yachts, offer sterndrive models.

“For boats less than 30 feet in length, outboards have distinct advantages,” Stenzel says. “But for 30- to 45-foot cruisers, sterndrives are viable options. They provide fuel efficiency, shallow draft and even joystick operation; but, to be honest, it’s also a stylistic thing.” A sterndrive requires a bilge compartment that the boat’s layout must accommodate. That same boat will, however, be able to offer an expansive, integrated swim platform and sleek, clean aesthetics. Best of all, one of sterndrive power’s drawbacks doesn’t exist in the freshwater world of the Great Lakes — it all comes down to one word. “We don’t have corrosion, which is a big worry in salt water,” says Paul Vanderdonck, sales manager for Colony Marine. This family-owned, southeast Michigan dealership is more than 60 years old, and it has locations in St. Clair Shores, Algonac and Pontiac. “Without an outboard taking up the aft end, you can open up the boat’s most valuable real estate — the swim platform. Manufacturers like Sea Ray and Cobalt are really innovating in that space. Sea Ray, for example, has hydraulic and manual swim steps to make it easier for kids and pets to get in and out of the water. It’s wide open, and you have plenty of room for lounging. You can even put out chairs.” Are you a sterndrive customer? If you’re not sure if a sterndrive boat is the right choice for your family, the most important question you need to ask is, “How do I plan to use my boat?” According to Vanderdonck and Stenzel, it all comes down to individual preferences for intended use. In southeast Michigan, Colony Marine’s sportboat buyers overwhelmingly prefer sterndrives — to the tune of 9 out of 10. “Experienced boaters know that sterndrive power isn’t a problem here thanks to our freshwater environment, so they also understand it’s a design choice,” Vanderdonck says. “When it comes to midsize cruisers, fewer owners in that size range want long-distance travel. They want day use. So, in the mid-30s category, we’re now seeing ‘hybrid’ boats become very popular.” These hybrid models have a large, usable bow, an open and seamless swim

platform and a cabin with galley and head. They can sleep four comfortably without sacrificing deck space, fore or aft, and that has huge appeal for today’s boat buyers. Stenzel agrees, noting that buyers are seeking to maximize the use of their boats. They want a great dayboat for entertaining that also can accommodate their family for an overnight stay, if necessary. Versatility is the name of the game. “We make sure to ask clear and concise questions, especially with our newer boaters,” Stenzel says. “We want to understand how much free time you have, and if you’re interested in longer cruises or day boating so we can help you find the right boat.” One of those misconceptions involves maintenance schedules. Sterndrives do require a
bit more maintenance but, as Stenzel observes, it’s not nearly as drastic as people think. “People also think an outboard is easier to work on but that’s not true,” Vanderdonck adds. “It’s easier to remove but that’s about it. A handy person with traditional mechanic’s skills can work on a sterndrive; it’s like an auto motor. And it’ll last for a long time.” Sounds like the sterndrive boat will be with us for the long haul, after all. ★

Integrated systems More and more new boat builds and refits are moving away from the traditional stereo head unit and instead toward systems that are integrated and controlled by the boat’s multi-function displays (MFDs), such as those from Garmin and Navico. This can be accomplished through black box units, such as Navico’s SonicHub 2, which are connected to compatible combination displays or through new compact and weatherproof entertainment systems, such as Fusion’s Apollo series systems and JL Audios’ Media Master systems. With the SonicHub 2, music can be streamed wirelessly via Bluetooth and controlled by any networked MFD in the system. Innovations that impress Fusion’s Apollo series and JL’s Media Master displays even take control and connectivity a step further. Connected to the boat via NMEA 2000 (a marine-specific standard or “language”), these audio system controllers have their own displays and controls, and can tie in to compatible MFDs. They can be controlled at the MFD or head unit, as well as through a smart device via Bluetooth or via Wi-Fi. Fusion’s Apollo series is the first in the marine audio world to pair with Apple AirPlay. Instead of Bluetooth, the Apollo system uses Wi-Fi to stream music from Apple devices. Wi-Fi compatibility means fast data transfers and simple network setups. With the PartyBus feature, music can be streamed through multiple Apollo stereos with

volume that can be controlled individually or as a network. Wi-Fi also permits over-the-air updates for quick software updates when needed. Audio without limits Thanks to JL Audio, passengers and water-skiers aboard Super Air Nautique G23 and G25 Paragon boats can now experience audio unlike anything previously available. Its updated WaveFront Speaker and WakeSub subwoofer technologies, which are integrated specifically in the models listed, produce audio for not only passengers aboard but also skiers or surfers behind the boat. JL Audio’s WaveFront speaker technology takes advantage of the reflective powers of the windshield to send sound through a custom-designed opening at the base of the port and starboard windshields on Super Air Nautique Paragon boats for exceptional onboard audio. Driven by JL Audio’s M6 coaxial full-range drivers, sound waves are directed through specially designed channels so the sound flows up to the listener’s ear rather than toward the more traditional seat level. Working with Nautique and studying open air acoustics has empowered JL Audio engineers to “rethink the possibilities of marine audio system integration,” says Ora Freeman, director of OEM sales, North America at JL Audio. Not to leave those towed or surfing behind out, JL Audio has also developed a custom hidden subwoofer system that delivers “complete engulfment in powerful deep bass as you ride or surf behind the boat.” While wake tower speakers do a good job of transmitting a broad spectrum of sound, this new technology eliminates the need to hang large and bulky subwoofers from the tower. Comprising two JL Audio subwoofers in custom enclosures buried in the aft portion of the hull, the bass is driven through specially designed ports to deliver sound to the rear of the Nautique boat. The self-draining and integrated design allows for an aesthetically pleasing system that not only sounds great but complements the boat’s lines and design. Thanks to this new technology and engineering, audiophiles can now experience a level of listening pleasure previously not imaginable on the water. ★

Encouraging kids to step up to more responsibility while boating.

hen our kids were younger, their main “job” on-board the boat was to simply listen to the rules while the first mate and captain (mom and dad) would do all the heavy lifting of docking, cruising and anchoring. But now that our kids are getting older, they are eager to learn the ropes and become more active members of our family crew. The most logical first step to help kids take on more responsibilities is to promote them to “first mate in training,” so they can shadow the first mate and learn how to do important tasks. As they gain confidence and acquire new boating skills, their new role becomes a learning experience that sets them on the path to an even deeper appreciation of their boat life. Life lessons on the water My first experience as a “first mate” did not happen until I was an adult. I had to literally learn the ropes while we were learning all about our first boat. At the time, I had only been dating my [now] husband for about a year, and we both had to quickly learn how to dock, maneuver and maintain a boat – boy, did it test our relationship! The experience taught us the importance of teamwork, communication, patience and trust in each other to ensure success in performing our duties as captain and first mate of the ship. With your kids, these same qualities are important as you share your boating knowledge. Choosing age-appropriate tasks and easing into new responsibilities where kids can safely learn at a gentle pace is important. When kids step up to new responsibilities, they realize that going to the boat is about more than having a fun day out on the water – it’s about learning what it takes to own a boat, care for a boat and operate a boat. These moments teaching your children will create a lifetime of memories. An early sense of responsibility or duty will also increase your child’s connection with boating. Usually, showing a proper technique – or showing how things can go wrong – is a hands-on activity where kids learn best. Memorable first experiences This past season, my 12-year-old daughter had her first experience stepping in as first mate. Some issues with our generator required a boat trip to another marina and leaving our boat there for a
few weeks. This became the perfect opportunity for our daughter to travel with her dad on the boat and fill in as first mate while I drove our car to the marina to provide a ride home. On our boat, first mate duties range from handling the bow lines at the dock to managing fenders or assisting in navigation. I had already started giving my daughter little lessons on the water over the past few summers, like letting her join me on the bow to assist with the lines and teaching her about how to look for debris in the water when cruising. We knew this was the year she was ready to take on the challenge of filling in as first mate. I will admit I was a little nervous not being onboard as the two embarked on their hour-long journey. It was the first time she was on the bow throwing lines onto the piling without me by her side, and it was the first time she was assisting with navigation and tying up at a new marina. But as I watched my husband and daughter sitting together at the helm getting smaller and smaller into the distance, I felt so pleased that they were going to experience this great adventure together. The maiden voyage with my daughter was such a success that several weeks later they did the return cruise back to our home marina, too. I was so proud that my aspiring first mate handled her role on the boat in such a responsible and confident manner. Most importantly, I was thrilled to see that taking on these new responsibilities enabled her to experience a new appreciation for boating. Talk to your kids about what new responsibilities they might want to take on while on the boat. Their eagerness to learn coupled with their enthusiasm for boating just might make it the perfect time for them to lend you a hand – or even step into the role of first mate. ★

Tiara Sport 38 LX A worthwhile makeover.
T
iara Sport has never been afraid to challenge the status quo. To prove it, Tiara took its fairly new model, the 38 LS, and used the same hull for yet another new model — the Tiara Sport 38 LX. The 38 LX is available with three Yamaha 350-hp four-stroke outboards for a comfortable cruising speed of 35 mph and a top speed of 57 mph. Triple Mercury Marine 400 Verado engines or twin 7 Marine 527 V8s are also available options. Built with a greater focus on dayboat activities, the 38 LX provides more seating space from bow to stern. “On the 38 LX, every space has a private area,” says Whitney Vishey, Tiara’s director of marketing and communications. “Passengers can really choose how they want to relax.” Like her sister, the 38 LX has versatile rear seats. Push a pedal and the backrest converts the fore and aft-facing pads into a comfortable lounge. One more push and the seats convert into large sunpads.
The cockpit includes an L-shaped starboard seat and a removable folding table. To port, a large galley includes a grill, ample sink, cold storage and enough counter space that the galley feels like more than a simple afterthought. The dual console design includes double-wide helm seats that convert to bolsters. The companion seat swivels aft to become part of cockpit conversations. The 38 LX has two spaces hidden away. At the aft end of the port console, a wide door provides access to a roomy, well-appointed head complete with Corian countertops and a Vacu-Flush toilet. have seen thousands of different boat designs throughout my many years of boating and working in the marine industry. However, when I first saw the Marquis M42, all I could muster was a “Wow!” To say the boat is striking is an understatement. When I first saw her, I immediately was filled with intrigue. I grew up sailing on Lake Michigan with a father who taught me to focus more on practicality than aesthetics. As a result, I typically gravitate toward the pragmatic side when it comes to boats. However, that fatherly advice quickly evaporated when I gazed upon my test boat, the new M42.

DESIGN WORTH NOTING
I immediately had an overwhelming desire to drive the boat thanks to its exotic and attention-grabbing styling. The reverse-raked bow flows up to the gently curved Permateak-covered foredeck. From there, your eye travels to the demi-windshield and angular black optional hardtop. The soft gray of the charcoal, gel-coated hull is contrasted by a stainless-steel strike plate at the bow and a stainless hull stripe/rub rail. Angular darkened hull windows come to a point forward. A black teardrop flows back to the swim platform accented by an air intake grill and shiny Marquis logo. After you take a few minutes to take in the M42, you’ll want to go aboard to see more. Bright white seats and cool platinum Permateak soles create a stark contrast against the black fiberglass. A large sunpad beckons for sunny days spent sunbathing. As I step up from the

optional hydraulically lowering swim platform to the open cockpit, there’s a comfortable lounge seating area with a table. Drink holders are nicely tucked partially under the optional hardtop. I step past the all-black wetbar adorned with a stainless handrail, flip-top covered sink and optional Isotherm cockpit fridge. The helm is decked out in carbon fiber-style woven mat with a Raymarine Axiom Pro 16-inch hybrid touch multifunction display screen housed in a pod, complete with a Ritchie Compass, behind the short angular windshield. Seated on the adjustable bench seat, visibility is excellent looking through the space between the windshield and the hardtop. However, I did wonder if we were going to get wet running outside. The sport wheel, throttles, controls and joystick are all in easy reach of the helm seat, as is a recessed storage area and a
Scanstrut wireless phone charger molded conveniently into the dash. Two sets of footrests can be positioned for flat or bolstered seating.
MORE THAN JUST GOOD LOOKS
As we cast off the lines and began to head out onto the water, I was thrilled to find out how the M42 would handle the 15 to 20 mph winds and 3- to 6-foot chop we had that day in the open water. The Donald L. Blount-designed hull rose smoothly as we accelerated the Twin Cummins QSB 480 6.7-liter diesels driving V-drives. Then, we headed into the wind and waves. We settled in cruising at 24 mph at 2300 rmp, burning around a statute mile per gallon. The ride was reasonable as we pushed into the chop. The boat handled well as we maneuvered through the moderate waves. Off the wind, it was easier to
maintain a faster comfortable cruising speed. At 2500 rpm, we were blazing along at 28 mph with the wind behind us. Pushing to 2850 rmp, we hit 33 mph but had to back off because the conditions were not especially ideal for top speeds. During our test drive, I found that the handling of the boat was lively and controlled. While we did get sprayed a little cutting through some larger waves, I was pleasantly surprised that the small windshield did not present a problem. Beneath the raked bow, the hull has an angled back forefoot with spray chines that ended up working effectively. We certainly did not ship any water up over the curved bow despite the lumpy conditions. The M42 has much more to offer than its looks. The boat is fun to drive and performs admirably. On the way in from our test, away from the waves, we hit 39 mph topping out at around 3200
rpm. You can also choose to exchange the diesels for triple Mercury Verado 400 hp outboards, which will increase top end speed and make the M42 even more nimble.
FINDING SPACE TO MANEOUVER
The M42 is a great day boat, and it’s equipped for light cruising as well with a nicely designed, air-conditioned cabin. The galley comes complete with a deep, stainless-steel sink, a single electric burner, a refrigerator, a microwave/ convection oven and plenty of storage space. A forward lounge with a table converts into a sizable bed with an overhead hatch for ventilation and some fresh air on those temperate nights. A full-size head with a separate shower compartment is ideal for rinsing off after relaxing on the bed or playing in the sun. For those looking for more than just power, the M42 also brings finesse.
With joystick control and a bow thruster, maneuvering the boat is quite easy in close quarters. We finished our test run by pirouetting around and backing into a tight slip in full view of a popular bar and restaurant that was packed with people. I tied up the boat, admiring its sleek lines and eye-catching design. I wondered how many people would ever guess that this stylish beauty is built in the heart of America, right in Pulaski, Wisconsin. Knowing the boat is engineered and built in the U.S. puts that practicality that my dad ingrained in me at ease, even if the M42’s dazzling looks is what captivated my attention in the first place. As the rumble of the diesels died down at the slip, I could hear murmurs from the diners above. As they gazed at this new Marquis, I could hear an unmistakable whisper spreading across the restaurant — “Wow!” H

derived from flybridge sportfish boats. SUVs eliminate the upper level, removing stairs and ladders to keep the driver conveniently in the salon with everyone else. The cockpits of SUVs are ideal for fishing but also great for entertaining or for relaxing close to the water. Many Riviera owners are focused on cruising, so design refinements have enhanced cruise-ability. In addition to livewells, SUV cockpits have barbeque grills, fridges, icemakers, sinks, seating and plenty of storage. The new Riviera 505 SUV adds elements like twin transom doors that open fully to connect the large swim platform, which can be augmented with yacht rails and an optional lift system. The feature that I found I liked the most, and that really sets the 505 SUV apart from previous models and the competition, is the semienclosed raised mezzanine.

The perfect balance of indoors and out
“It feels like a porch,” I found myself saying as I sat on the mezzanine of the new Riviera 505 SUV. I was there with Riviera’s Owner and Chairman Rodney Longhurst and the company’s Brand and Communications Director Stephen Milne. The 63.51-foot mezzanine, a few steps up from the cockpit, provides a cozy transitional space between the salon and the cockpit. The hardtop has electrically activated sun hatches above, windows and clears on the sides that can enclose the space but also allow for it to be opened to the air. As I sat comfortably on one of the twin upholstered lounges, I reminisced about my childhood home outside of Chicago, where I spent many warm summer nights sitting on our screened porch. That feeling of protection and enclosure — while being connected to the sights, sounds and open air of the outdoors — is special. Riviera nailed this feeling on the 505 SUV. “We added additional elements to transition the boat closer to our Sport Yacht Series,” says Milne. “The styling remains SUV, and the cockpit near the water level still works well for fishing; but additional cruising amenities like the mezzanine give our owners the best of both worlds.”
The definition of spacious and airy
A pop-up window along with a stainless steel and glass slider connect the mezzanine to the galley and salon. The main deck is one level from the mezzanine all the way clear to the windshield. This creates a large, interconnected living area that I really liked. It could be opened throughout or separated into individual zones. Hand-varnished Walnut gives the interior a rich, contemporary look. The wood covers extensive drawers in the galley, and Cherry and Oak are also options. Solid counters host a Miele electric cooktop; a deep, stainless-steel sink; and a convection oven/ microwave below. Drawers can be customized for versatility: Some are refrigerators, some are freezers and there’s a dishwasher drawer option. The salon is bright and open with multiple seating areas, an ottoman you can move around, a folding dining table and a flat-screen TV. A recessed varnished wood channel in the ceiling with a stainless grab rail looks great and demonstrates Riviera’s understanding and concern for safe operation. Twin adjustable Recaro helm seats are comfortable, and they give the driver clear visibility. The helm provides easy access to all controls, including two Garmin 17-inch glass bridge multi-function displays. Personally, I would prefer if the IPS joystick was placed
adjacent to the throttles. A large sunroof overhead and opening side windows deliver ventilation when not running heat or air conditioning.
Speed with (assisted) balance
The Riviera SUV handled well while cruising in open water with 3 to 5-foot seas and winds 10 to 15 mph. The optional Volvo Penta D11 IPS 950s took us to a top speed of 39.4 mph. Maneuvering at 23 mph and 1950 rpm, the boat turned evenly in both directions in about three boat-lengths and maintained most speed through the turns. Performing these fast turns, I could not feel any effect from the optional Seakeeper9, but at slower speeds it was noticeable. Turning gradually through sloppy seas, the Seakeeper reduced our roll from 7 to only 3 degrees — and the difference was apparent. The bow on the Riviera 505 SUV has been modified slightly from previous models to give it a bit more flare and to reconfigure the anchor placement. We still got some spray on the windshield when bucking the chop, but the increased flare helped some. The Riviera 505 SUV is a capable long-haul cruiser. A fast cruise of 28 mph burns 49 gallons per hour, providing a calculated range of 451 miles based on 90% of capacity.

Below decks there are three cabins, including a fullbeam master. The master spans the full 16-foot, 3-inch beam. It is brightened by large hull windows with opening portholes, and it hosts a queen island bed, a flatscreen TV, a lounge and multiple drawers. The master’s foyer has a closet big enough to enter and a head with a separate shower. As I sat in the semi-protection, watching our wake as we cruised toward the shoreline, I found myself wishing I could stay aboard a bit longer. ★

Houghton Lake
Where: North of Clare Why: An angler’s paradise
The largest inland lake in Michigan – and among the largest natural inland lakes in the U.S. – is 10-mile long Houghton Lake, spanning more than 20,000 acres. With a maximum depth of just 22 feet, Houghton is one of the most fertile lakes in the state, making it popular with anglers chasing largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, northern pike, walleye and crappie. Served by multiple ramps, comfortable shoreline resorts and two major marinas, access to the lake is excellent in spite of its wilderness feel. Anglers will enjoy the opportunity to catch species they can’t find on the Great Lakes, including the elusive striped bass.

Framed by Neenah to the north, Oshkosh to the west and Fond du Lac to the south, massive Lake Winnebago stretches 30 miles long and 10 miles across, encompassing nearly 138,000 acres of boating paradise. The shallow lake — maximum depth is 21 feet — can get choppy in windy weather, but that doesn’t stop locals from enjoying its charms. Fishing is big, but the main attraction is the view from the water. That, and the vintage aircraft. Head to Oshkosh for the annual AirVenture air show in July, a week-long extravaganza that typically attracts up to 600,000 people every year. ★

ochester, New York can be fascinating, educational, surprising and occasionally confusing. The city has seen it all — from industry to fine arts and culture. Its humble beginnings were based on the Genesee River. It has been named the flour city with two spellings for two major industries.

After the Revolutionary War, there were several sales and resales of the land today known as Rochester. After dabbling in milling, the city turned to flour production with the help of Nathaniel Rochester. The city thrived and by 1834 it was the largest flour-producing city in the United States. Rochester became known as the Flour City. However, by 1850 the flour boom had waned. It was quickly replaced by seed businesses and became Flower City. After the Civil War, Rochester quickly became a hub of industrialization. Companies such as Bausch and Lomb, Eastman Kodak, Western Union were all founded in Rochester. Clothing, shoes, brewing and machine tools became major industries. One of Rochester’s best-known companies is Eastman Kodak, founded by George Eastman. In the 1880s, after years of experimenting, Eastman patented the dry plate coating machine and revolutionised photography. Eastman was an extremely charitable man, giving away more than $100 million in his lifetime. He supported the arts, education, parks and medicine. After his death, he made sure that his company would carry on his legacy. George Eastman’s stunning home and garden is now the Eastman Museum. Built in 1905, it became a museum in 1945. It is the largest photography museum in the world and it houses several million objects. There are at least three temporary

exhibits at any time, music recitals, an extensive library, graduate programs in film preservation, docent tours of the exhibits and house, and numerous special events.

Rochester has long been a stronghold for women’s rights, led by Susan B. Anthony. Her home is now a museum with displays, events and regular tours. Susan B. Anthony hosted the headquarters of the National American Woman Suffrage Association (of which Anthony was president) at her home as well. 2020 marks the centennial of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote. It’s also the 200th anniversary of Susan B. Anthony’s birth and the 75th anniversary of the museum. A parade is planned for September 12, 2020 in Rochester to commemorate the centennial and Susan B. Anthony’s contributions to women’s suffrage. It will also be broadcast virtually. After touring the Susan B. Anthony House, take a short walk to the Susan B. Anthony Square Park. There is a marvelous sculpture by artist Pepsy Kettavong entitled “Lets Take Tea.” It features Susan B. Anthony and Fredrick Douglas sitting at a tea table. Rochester seems to have a history of strong pioneering women. One of them is Catharine Anselm Gleason. Her father founded Rochester’s Gleason Works gear manufacturing company. Catharine later joined him at the company as an engineer — an especially male-dominated profession at the time. Gleason was the first woman to attend Cornell University in the engineering department, and the first woman to become a full member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. She went on to rescue several companies and build housing communities with her engineering acumen.

You don’t have to go far to find a number of fun restaurants. The Rochester Port Authority is a large facility at the mouth of the Genesee River that’s a full-service marina that also hosts several options to eat. You can also dock your boat at Pelicans Nest for some good food and a fun time, especially when there’s live entertainment. Prefer to leave your boat at your marina? Several restaurants are in easy walking distance, such as Whiskey Run. Rochester has several great brewery options, thanks to a long history of brewing beer. The city’s first brewery, Aqueduct Spring Brewery, was established in 1819. By the end of the nineteenth century, the city had at least 50 breweries. One of the largest and oldest is the Genesee Brewing Company, established in 1878. Today you can take tours, enjoy tastings or enjoy a bite to eat at the Genesee Brew house. In good weather, you can even enjoy your meal on the patio overlooking the High Falls. Don’t miss out on the many other craft beer breweries, such as ROC Brewing, Swiftwater, Last Borough, Fifth Frame and Three Heads Brewing. Most offer tours, tastings and food. For something a bit different try a pedal bike brewery tour.

Rochester is a great hot spot for those hungry for history as well. You can stop to read a series of plaques with local history before the Colonel Patrick O’Rorke Memorial Bridge. The Charlotte Lighthouse museum is another stop for marine history. Don’t miss Mount Hope Cemetery, opened on October 3, 1838 on 40 acres. It was the first municipal cemetery in the U.S. and today has grown to 200 acres (it is still in use). Many notable people are buried there, including Susan B. Anthony, Fredrick Douglas, Henry Alvah Strong and Nathaniel Rochester. The Friends of Mount Hope Cemetery offers regular tours, both general and themed, both public and private. You can also choose to go on a historical tour by boat. The Harbor Town Belle is an 80-foot paddle wheeler that cruises the Genesee River, Lake Ontario and Irondequoit Bay. There are several cruises, such as music cruises, dinner cruises, beer or wine tastings, private parties and themed events. The captain will give commentary as the ship passes points of interest, which is why I always recommend this type of cruise even for those with their own boats.

Rochester has a vibrant boating scene. There are several yacht clubs and marinas, most of which offer transient docking and a range of services. No matter what marina you end up at, you will have easy access to the Genesee River Trails, Ontario Beach Park and Turning Point Park. If you are approaching Rochester from the Erie Canal, you may want to stop at Corn Hill Landing. You can dock along the concrete pier, which offers free shore power. The first 24 hours are free and $5 per day after that. Take a walk along the waterfront or stop at the patios of one of the restaurants, such as Silk District Pub, Tony D’s or Kainos. When the sun sets, enjoy the view of downtown all lit up in a display of color that reflects on the waters. It’s not far to downtown and easy to get to. Just make sure you have a map or good GPS. Just a short distance from the Genesee River is the Irondequoit Bay, which has several marinas and restaurants, including the historic Union Tavern. Both the Genesee River and Irondequoit Bay are rather far from downtown, but there is Uber and a decent bus service, which you can use with a $3 unlimited all-day pass.

Rochester has a strong and vibrant art scene, with galleries, street art and world-class theater and dance. The Neighbourhood of the Arts (NOTA) is a walkable area known for its many artists, restaurants and cafes. You can find a nod to NOTA’s industrial roots with the Gleason Building, which still manufactures gears. The largest gallery in Rochester is the Memorial Art Gallery. A mix of old and new architecture, there is plenty to see and do with fascinating exhibits, tours, talks and musical presentations. The gallery also organizes art tours to cities around the world. Stroll over to Village Gate, a complex within NOTA that houses art gallery’s, shops, businesses and restaurants. Next door, the Anderson Arts Building is full of artist studios and galleries. Visit on the second Saturday of the month to hear the artists talk about their work in person. Just a few streets over from NOTA is the Park Avenue neighborhood. Walk along the street and stop into the many interesting shops, such as Parkleigh, Statement Boutique, Useless Objects, Dorje Adornments or Salty Boutique. There are also quite a few restaurants, such as Park Avenue Pub, ROAM Café, Bacco’s Ristorante, Blu Wolf or Frog Pond. Many have outdoor patios, making them perfect for people watching. I was particularly impressed with the Oxford Gallery in Park Avenue. It’s located on the lower floor of an apartment building, so you need to buzz to get in. When I arrived, I was immediately offered a glass of wine to enjoy as I toured the collection of contemporary and historic pieces. Don’t forget about Rochester’s world-renowned theater and dance. Check out the Kodak Centre, GEVA Centre, Blackfriars or ROC Broadway Theater League — just to name a few. Rochester is also home to the CGI Rochester International Jazz festival. This nine-day festival started in 2002 and now attracts more than 200,000 people, utilizing 21 venues. The festival is normally held in June, but this year has been rescheduled for October (as of this writing) because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

There is plenty to keep the youngsters entertained in Rochester. Put the Seneca Zoo, the Seabreeze Amusement park and, most unique of all, the Strong Museum of Play on your list. The Seabreeze amusement park is located in Irondequoit Bay, so it is easy for boaters to access. It’s fun for everyone with rides, kiddie rides and a water park. The Seneca Zoo is a family friendly attraction with excellent conservation and learning programs. There is also the Rochester Museum of Science and the Strasenburgh Planetarium. Perhaps the most unique and interactive destination for both children and their families is the Strong Museum of Play. Founded by Margaret Woodbury Strong in 1968 and originally called the Margaret Woodbury Strong Museum of Fascination, the Strong is one of the largest history museums in the U.S. and the world’s largest collection of historic materials related to play. It is home to the National Toy Hall of Fame, The World Video Game Hall of Fame and the International Center for the History of Electronic Games. Its exhibits include a butterfly garden, aquarium carousel and train rides. There is so much to see and do in Rochester, it could fill a book. Hopefully this will whet your appetite to sail on over and experience all Rochester has to offer. ★

freighters head into port from the comfort of your slip or the marina. “Freighters park at the mouth about one mile from the marina,” says Wayne Saile, Rogers City Marina’s harbormaster. “It’s nothing to see three to five huge freighters.” Rest assured that your time at Rogers City Marina will be stress free. For starters, Saile says that since he took over in 2016, there has always been space at the 148-slip marina. Need to lift your own (albeit slightly smaller) freighter? The marina has lifts that can handle up to 40,000 pounds. Need fuel? They have that, too. “It’s a nice little quiet marina,” Saile says. “A lot of boaters are heading to these hustle-and-bustle types of places, but a lot of boaters like to come back or decompress at Rogers City Marina. It’s one of those places where you can do what you want: There’s lots of space and it’s pleasing to the eye.” H

Fishtug Gloria
The Fishtug Gloria is not your typical house boat. For that matter, it’s not your typical fishing vessel, either. In fact, it’s a little bit of both. This 40-foot long, 13-foot wide traditional fishing tugboat was built just after WWII in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. From 1945 to 2001, the boat was used for commercial fishing. When Captain John Andries and his wife Bridget found the boat in Manistique, Michigan however, they had other ideas in mind and purchased the boat. Based out of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, Andries spent the next six and a half years giving the fish tug a complete, top-to-bottom makeover. He kept hints of the original work boat aesthetic and transformed the inside into a comfortable home. He added a lounge with a double sleeper and a big-screen TV, a large galley, a skylight, a bedroom in the bow, a small electric fireplace, traditional heat and A/C, and hot water. Once the Gloria was complete, Andries and his wife shipped off on a six-year cruise around the Great Lakes that included a tour of the Great Lakes Loop. The Gloria has gone to the Door County Maritime Museum’s boat show a few times, where it won the People’s Choice award in 2006 and 2007, as well as the Best of Power award. —New owners Bruce and Chery Bishop, Sturgeon Bay, WI ADD YOUR BOAT!
