Boaters, boat manufacturers and marine retailers embrace the art of paddling. by Alan Wendt ..........................................................................................

FROM THE HELM by Kate Bush

Explore. Dream. Discover. The joy of cruising.

M

ark Twain was a wise man. He once remarked, “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” The Great Lakes offer quintessential cruising grounds just begging to be explored. One of the great joys of Kate and sister Amy boating is the endless possibility cruising Lake Michigan. that the open waters provide. Great Lakes boaters can leave port and explore new destinations, sights, tastes and experiences. My father’s preferred cruising ground was from our port of Montague, Michigan to Milwaukee, Wisconsin and back at the break of dawn — just to grab a fresh Wisconsin breakfast. Since I was not an early bird, my favored route was north up the coast to Pentwater for the day. Whether you’re a cruising connoisseur who spends months doing the Great Loop, or a novice boater taking a quick day trip down the shoreline, cruising is a lifestyle that satisfies our need to explore, discover and dream. There is no greater adventure than committing a day, a week, or even a month to roam the Sweetwater Seas, listen to the calm waters lap underneath the hull and explore the ports along the way. June is our cruising issue and we’ve compiled features that awake that adventurous, traveling spirit. Feeling brave? Try your hand at stand-up paddle boarding, with tips from contributor Alan Wendt (p. 52). Are you a sailor? Cruise on over to Chicago this June to attend the first-ever freshwater America’s Cup World Series (p. 48). Have your sights set on farther destinations? Our guide on traveling between the U.S. and Canadian border will keep your international cruising nice and uneventful (p. 46). Another port to add to your cruising bucket list is Ontario’s Wine Country: Prince Edward County (p. 56). This island on Lake Ontario boasts more than 30 wineries, local art, bike trails and a gorgeous landscape. For those of you looking to upgrade your ride this summer, we’ve tested two great additions to the boat market: The Four Winns HD270 (p. 38), a sporty day cruiser complete with a head; and the Cruisers Yachts 54 Cantius (p. 42), a luxurious yacht that can accommodate the whole family. So, listen to the perceptive Twain: Toss those bowlines and go explore!

Correction In the May 2016 issue of the magazine, our Port of Call on Lake St. Clair (p. 53) included two restaurants on the Nautical Mile — Beach Grill and Rojo Mexican Bistro — that are no longer in business. Beach Grill has since been replaced with Jefferson Beach Marina’s The Watermark Bar and Grille (JEFFERSONBEACHMARINA.COM/RESTAURANT). Rojo Mexican Bistro has been replaced with The Current Food & Libations (THECURRENTRESTAURANT.COM ). We sincerely regret the error.

Asian Carp Make Great Dog Treats The founders of BareItAll Petfoods believe they have discovered a solution to the invasive Asian carp population: Dog treats. The company produces three different sizes of treats (crunchers, crisps and nibblers) that contain Asian carp in combination with other ingredients such as dried sweet potatoes, flax seed, chickpeas and mangoes. The company hopes their treats will provide a sustainable solution to reducing the Asian carp population, especially since integrating the fish into the human food market has so far been unsuccessful. BareItAll Petfoods is currently available in 45 retail stores throughout Chicago and its suburbs. The company also expects to expand into the cat food market soon. GREAT LAKES NEWS

Bob Dougherty 1930-2016

Bob Dougherty, the founder of EdgeWater and Everglades Boats, passed away in March at the age of 85. Many consider Dougherty a mover and shaker in the boating industry. Dougherty was a chief designer and senior vice president of engineering at Boston Whaler, before retiring in 1990. He then went on to create EdgeWater Power Boats in 1992 and Everglades Boats in 2001 with his son Stephen. All together, it’s estimated Dougherty’s work brought 1,000 jobs to Edgewater, Florida. Dougherty sold EdgeWater Power Boats in 1995 and Everglades Boats just last year. He is survived by his wife, four children and ten grandchildren.

LAKE ERIE PHOTO COURTESY OF OHIO SEA GRANT; COAST GUARD PHOTO COURTESY OF U.S. COAST GUARD

Boating in wet weather can be tricky — especially when you can’t see properly out of the windshield. With its Rain View and Clear Plastic Polish, Star brite aims to improve visibility if you’re caught in wet weather. Rain View is a water-repelling agent designed to force even mild monsoon-strength rain to sheet off of glass surfaces. To activate, simply spray Rain View on the windshield, allow it to dry to a haze and wipe it away. If plastic surfaces are causing you problems, there’s Star brite’s Clear Plastic Polish, whose application prevents water from remaining on treated surfaces without harming or corroding delicate plastics. Millions to be Spent on Lake Erie Water Quality

In March, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced that its Natural Resources Conservation Service would provide $41 million for a three-year initiative to improve water quality in the Western Lake Erie Basin region. The funding aims to support efforts by environmentally conscious farmers and ranchers in Ohio, Michigan and Indiana to put in place science-based conservation measures in order to reduce runoff entering local waterways. A report by the Conservation Effects Assessment Project estimates that over the three years this initiative will reduce phosphorus runoff from farms by more than 640,000 pounds each year, as well as reduce sediment loss by more than 260,000 tons. 2018 International Antique and Classic Boat Show

Classic craft lovers near the Great Lakes won’t have to travel far for the 2018 International Antique and Classic Boat Show, which will be held in Port Huron, Michigan. The event will take place from September 9-15, 2018, with activities in various locations around town. The show itself will be held along the Black River. Although the show usually attracts between 100-150 antique boats, organizers hope the Port Huron’s location on an inland lake will make it easier to bring in more vessels — particularly larger cruisers that don’t trailer well. The show will revolve around the theme of “Bring Your Boat Home.”

Honesty, integrity, skilled and experienced boater — that describes the team of sales and brokerage professionals at Jefferson Beach Yacht Sales (JBYS), and Mathew Ginsberg fits right in as the newest member of this dynamic team. Ginsberg is a lifetime boater and earned his 100 Ton USCG Captain’s License in 2000. In addition to his extensive captaining experience, Ginsberg spent the past decade working in sales and achieved top performer status at his previous employer with numerous accolades from his loyal customer base. Ginsberg takes great pride in assisting his clients with their most finite boating needs, going above and beyond to deliver the ultimate boating experience while developing a genuine friendship along the way. JBYS sells Sunseeker, Viking, Princess, Absolute, Carver, Marquis, Duffy, Novurania and Williams; has six Great Lakes locations and also serves Ontario, Canada. For more information visit JBYS.COM.

Great Lakes News

Microbead photo courtesy Mpca

Students Design Microbead Filter A group of nine innovative secondary school students from Mississauga, Ontario, think they’ve found the solution to microbead pollution in the Great Lakes. The student team has worked together for seven months to design a filtration system to be added to the end of existing sewage filtration systems, which would target microbeads and small plastics. Microbeads are tiny pieces of plastic — often about half a millimeter in size — commonly found in toothpastes, face cleansers and body scrubs to exfoliate the skin. With their small size, microbeads easily slip through filtration systems and enter waterways. The students’ filtration system would use an electric current to charge and attract microbeads, which workers would then clean out, before the beads enter the Great Lakes. In March, the student team became one of 11 finalists in the Canadian Samsung Solve for Tomorrow competition, earning $20,000 for their idea. They’re now aiming for one of the competition’s top two prizes of $50,000 and a spotlight on the AsapSCIENCE YouTube channel. The students say the prize money could make their project a reality. Maid of the Mist 170 years of smooth sailing on Niagara Falls. wenty percent of the world’s freshwater supply fills the Great Lakes, most of which flows over Niagara Falls. Found in Niagara Falls State Park, Niagara Falls is one of the Seven Wonders of the World, famous as a honeymoon destination and New York attraction. The park is also distinguished for being the nation’s first state park, designed by America’s premier landscape architect, William Law Olmstead. Three falls make up Niagara Falls: The American Falls, the smaller Bridal Veil Falls, and the largest fall, Horseshoe Falls, which is on the Canadian side. To experience the raw power of Niagara Falls, step aboard the Maid of the Mist. Since 1846, Maid of the Mist (MOM) has taken passengers on the Niagara River along the international border to within spitting distance of Horseshoe Falls. These falls began about 12,000 years ago as 2,509 tons of water sculptured its surface; today they produce almost unlimited hydroelectric power.

Master mariners Handling a boat here is difficult. Wind, current, water depth, boat design and unpredictable situations influence the ride; rapids and falls require expert hands and well-built boats to navigate. The Maid of the Mist VI and VII are 80-footlong, white steel steamship-style boats with a capacity for 583 passengers. The captain maneuvers the 250-ton boats in a 170foot-deep river with twin Volvo 350-hp Penta inboard diesel engines without lateral thrusters. Reaching Horseshoe Falls, passengers may notice a change in vibrations as the engines shut off and the water’s momentum pushes the boat backward. Without veteran crews, this maneuver would be exceptionally dangerous. At the right moment, the engines are turned on, and the captain takes control for a leisurely ride back to the dock. It’s an incredible experience.

MOM crews are master mariners. They surpass the skills necessary to work on the Great Lakes and beyond. Each person must have more than a 100-ton license and at least three years experience. Most of the crew was a Great Lakes captain, while two came from Nova Scotia. Everyone starts out as first mate. The fleet has six captains, six mates and three deck hands. Each boat carries a crew of five people, including a captain and mate on every voyage; standby substitutes fill in as needed. Rod MacDonald, senior captain since 1989, worked on the Great Lakes for about 10 years prior to working on MOM. As a Canadian citizen, he drives over the Niagara River to command the MOM. Although he’s been piloting these boats for almost 30 years and has made more than 70,000 trips to the falls, his satisfaction comes from the excitement and appreciation passengers exhibit when seeing the falls for the first time. Sightseeing season MOM cares about exemplary service and safety. New upper and lower gangways and an elevator have been installed to assist passengers boarding and exiting the boats. In addition, the facility is fully ADA-compliant, or handicap accessible. MOM received the 2015 Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence Award for consistent great traveler reviews. In 2016, MOM was also awarded the National Tour Association’s (NTA) Distinguished Dozen Gold Award in the Sightseeing Cruise Company Category, acknowledging a quality product, customer service, value and safety to customers. Passengers come from far and wide; in 2015, more than 1.4 million passengers boarded the MOM, including visitors from China and India. The season begins when no ice from the upper lakes threatens the boats in April or May, and it closes down before ice clogs up the river in November. The ice can get 20-30 feet thick. Here, average winds are 8-12 mph and top out at 35 mph — but they don’t affect MOM; weather has closed down the boat ride perhaps twice in the past 20 years. In the off-season, however, boats are moved to a state-of-the-art dry dock facility for yearly maintenance. Visitor tips Visitors should be safety conscious. This side of the park is covered in mist and water, so the boat’s handrails and steps will be wet. Wearing deck shoes or shoes with good tread is advised. If you venture to the Cave of the Winds areas first, special-designed complimentary sandals are provided, which are perfect for the boat trip. Even though MOM attendants provide a recyclable blue plastic poncho, expect to get wet from the knees down.

While on-board, make sure to use the handrails. These boats are equipped with a radio that’s monitored by the park and local emergency agencies. First aid kits and life jackets are stored in large rectangular lockers at the back of the boat on lower and upper levels. Every area on the boat is an excellent place to ride, but the upper deck at the tip of the bow has the best panoramic view and enormous spray. In between the falls, notice the rock formations on the shore, and the seagulls and their rookeries. This is a ride for all ages, but strollers must stay at the dock and wheelchair access is on the lower deck. A boat leaves from the dock every 15 minutes for a 40-minute ride up the river and back. Consider a waterproof camera for the tour and take a fabric handkerchief to wipe off the lens periodically. With a camera like the Nikon Coolpix, adjust the ISO to a higher number; this compensates for increased light

reflection from the falls, and allows you to capture rainbows produced by the spray. There is a seven-month window for sailing, beginning in April and ending in early November. cruising with kids by Diane Seltzer

Summer Fun Bucket List 10 must-do activities for your boat-loving kids. s a new boating season gets underway, your “boat calendar” can fill up quite fast. Between summer holidays, weekend trips and entertaining guests, there’s a lot to accomplish during the boating season. Summer months can quickly come and go, and you want to be sure the season ends with no regrets — particularly for your kids. Our children love boating and their anticipation for activityfilled weekends on the boat reaches a peak by early June when school lets out. Each year they have big expectations as they set out to embrace all that they love about our boating lifestyle. Now is the time to plan summer boating activities that will check off items on your young boaters’ summer fun bucket list. Here are 10 ideas to help maximize your family boating adventures this summer. 1. Cruise to kid-friendly destinations Every weekend on the boat is a welcome excursion for our kids; cruising to a new location or a family favorite is always a memorable adventure. When planning a trip we always try to

28

keep an eye out for special features or family-friendly activities. A marina packed with kid-friendly amenities — like a pool or a playground — is always at the top of our list. Many marinas also offer special events like outdoor movies or family fun days. 2. Visit waterfront attractions Chances are you boat near some well-known (or not so well-known) historic waterfront locations. Most waterfronts have a rich history as a fishing town or boast a historic landmark. You may be lucky enough to be close to an aquarium or museum. Find a location worth exploring and make it an educational outing for your kids to learn about the local history or environment. 3. Experience local events Every year there are one-of-a-kind events happening at marinas and harbors in your local area. This year, pick one that your family has always wanted to check out. Maybe it’s the pirate weekend event or the annual boat parade.

photos by diane seltzer

A

Take advantage of these special on-the-water events that will surely become summer highlights. 4. Fireworks on the water Whether it’s the Fourth of July or Labor Day weekend, watching a fireworks display light up the sky from your boat or marina is an enjoyable annual tradition for the entire family. And lucky for boaters, almost every river, lake and harbor offers spectacular fireworks shows to enjoy on the water each summer. 5. Mix it up We like heading to our “spot,” but sometimes it can be fun to try a new cove or anchorage. Even if it’s just a short trip down the river or on the opposite side of the lake, it can be fun to drop the hook somewhere different with new scenery and water to explore. 6. Connecting with nature Cast a fishing line, set up minnow traps or go on the hunt for colorful stones in the sand. Spend the afternoon watching bald eagles soar through the sky as you feed ducks from the swim platform. Boating offers your kids the ability to appreciate the outdoors and connect with nature in new ways each summer. 7. Beach bonfire A nighttime dinghy ride to the beach for a bonfire is an exciting adventure for kids. And it’s even better with the promise of toasting marshmallows and making s’mores!

8. More water fun Whether they are into extreme watersports or simply doing some awesome jumps off the swim platform, fun on the water is probably the No. 1 thing kids are looking forward to on the boat this summer. What new water toys or watersports will you introduce this year? Kneeboarding, tubing, slalom skiing... the list is endless. 9. Mega raft-up Summers are a time to reconnect with our boat friends, and there’s no better way than connecting our boats together for a raft-up. My kids love a “mega raft-up,” where they can meet new friends and boat-hop the afternoon away. 10. Bring on the VIP guests We try to plan a few weekends entertaining close friends (who also have kids) on the boat. This year, we are planning a RV and boat meet-up. We’ll invite our friends to spend the day anchored out on our boat and then join them at a nearby campground for an evening campfire. It’s going to be a blast for the kids to experience the outdoors in two different ways in one weekend with good friends; it will surely become an annual tradition. You may not be able to accomplish everything on your bucket list this year, but it’s certainly fun to try! ★

ELECTRONICS by Glenn Hayes

From Point A to B Automate your route with new chartplotters.

Garmin’s BlueChart g2 Vision HD autorouting cartography and its Auto Guidance 3.0 feature in action.

GLENN HAYES is a marine writer and photographer whose background in the marine industry and in marine electronics spans almost three decades and many thousands of miles at sea traveling the world. He can be reached at HAYESSTUDIOS.COM.

JUNE 2016

f you’re planning a cruising adventure now that the boating season is here, it is probably time to dust off the chartplotter owner’s manual and re-familiarize yourself with how it works. Chartplotters have never been easier to use; manufacturers are constantly improving their user interfaces, making routing and plotting features increasingly intuitive. That being said, there are a couple of standouts in the marine chartplotting market that are not only easy to use but also have new offerings of autorouting cartography.

What is autorouting, you may ask? Simply input your vessel’s draft and overhead height, pick a point on the chart where you want to go, and autorouting will determine a safe route for you to follow while displaying it on the electronic chart. Garmin’s all-new BlueChart g2 Vision HD cartography (GARMIN.COM) and Navionics’ new Dock-to-dock Autorouting feature (NAVIONICS.COM) have autorouting capabilities that can make your next cruise easier and more fun to plan. As time and technology progress, autorouting may be a possibility on all electronics chartplotters; but for now Garmin and Navionics are leading the way. Garmin BlueChart g2 Vision HD While Garmin is not new to autorouting — with many of its existing and legacy machines capable of such operations — its all-new BlueChart g2 Vision HD cartography allows for enhanced autorouting, with charts utilizing up to 1-foot HD contours. With this higher level of bottom structure detail, autorouting now has

LAKELANDBOATING.COM

more capability in places like canals, marinas, ports and shallow water areas. The new HD cartography offers what Garmin calls Auto Guidance 3.0: An improvement over previous versions of Garmin automated routing. You can select a point to navigate to and let the software determine a safe route based on your boat’s specifics. Unlike the older version, you now have the ability to enter and leave places, including marinas, as part of your route. Auto Guidance 3.0 will also help you avoid obstacles, including buoys and low bridges. When you run the display in what Garmin calls MarinerEye view, you can see your autoroute magenta line on a 3-dimensional chart. MarinerEye View also color codes the water for you: Red means it’s too shallow; orange indicates dangerously shallow waters; yellow means deeper water; and blue indicates it’s deep enough water for your draft. This is a very simple way to visually understand the depth and see what’s too shallow for your particular vessel during your route. Navionics Dock-to-dock Autorouting Navionics now offers what it calls Dock-to-dock Autorouting as an option for its already useful Boating mobile apps. This powerful planning tool does what others can’t and allows for autorouting in complex waterways, narrow passages and tight channels. You can choose your destination by manually entering it or you can click on the chart and the route will be automatically calculated. Dock-to-dock Autorouting has the ability (by processing huge amounts of data) to plot a safe course through complex waters that other autorouting software would not be able to. You can easily view route details, observe precautions along the way and check out points of interest. With the right information put in, the program can even give you estimated trip time and fuel consumption calculations. If you check your selected route and feel like running a little wider of some rocks, you can simply click and drag points along the route. This capable planning tool is included as part of the Navionics+ one-year app, which is included in any paid Navionics Boating app. Playing with the app for just a few minutes will prove how useful this autorouting software really is. The good news is that it’s available today for iPhones and iPads and soon will also be available on Raymarine multifunction displays running Navionics+, Platinum+ or Hot Map Platinum chart cards. Although this is cutting-edge technology, it should be noted that autorouting software shouldn’t be relied on as the sole means of navigation; manufacturers warn it is for planning purposes only. That being said, it is a useful tool in your navigation toolbox and is only getting better with time. ★

DON’T HESITATE TO RENOVATE by Capt. Frank Lanier

The Art of Rafting Know the ropes of a proper raft-up.

R

afting up can be a great way to enjoy time on the water with family, friends or strangers that are soon to be new friends. As with any social gathering, however, there are expectations and unwritten rules of etiquette to follow in order to keep that potentially great experience from spiraling into disaster. Here’s how to be the hit of the next raft-up party.

Equipment you’ll need 1. Fenders: You’ll want four good-sized fenders at a minimum. When it comes to fenders, bigger is better; in other words, four properly-sized fenders will protect your hull better than 10 undersized ones. More is also better, as you’ll never hear anyone complain they have too many oversized fenders during a raft-up. 2. Lines: Bring along bow lines, stern lines and at least two spring lines of suitable strength. Line diameter is based on the size of your vessel (your dock line size is a good guide) but a half-inch is typically the minimum. Each line should be long enough to loop over your neighbor’s cleat and have the end returned and secured to your cleat. Having a few backup spares is also a good idea. 3. Anchor and rode: It’s a good idea to have your anchor at the ready for quick deployment should trouble require the raft to break up unexpectedly (i.e. the anchor boat dragging). Anchoring or mooring considerations As a general rule, the largest boat (which will typically be the heaviest and carry the largest anchor) will be the “anchor” boat. This is the same for anchor or host boats picking up a mooring ball. If more than two boats are rafting up, the anchor boat should remain in the middle with the other (presumably smaller) boats alternating to port and starboard as they arrive. One big anchor boat (with plenty of rode) is sufficient for most typical raft-ups. Larger raft-ups may require more than one anchor boat, or the deployment of a stern anchor to prevent excess swinging. The single anchor configuration is a lot simpler, however, and eliminates the possibility of tangled rodes. The anchor boat will always want to let out extra scope (at least 7:1) even in quiet conditions. All chain rodes are a plus. Pre-rafting preparations When joining a raft-up, always ask for permission before coming alongside another boat. Never assume it’s OK to simply pull alongside and start throwing lines over, no matter how well you may know the people aboard. Even if you’ve

been invited beforehand, you’ll want to ask for permission and verify which side they want you to raft to. Pulling up within hailing distance or using your VHF radio can achieve this. Once you’ve received permission and know which side to raft up to, stand off until your fenders are in position and your bow and stern lines are ready — with one end attached to the respective cleats and the other coiled and ready to heave. Keep two spring lines at the ready. Doing the deed When all is ready, approach the host boat slowly from the stern (sailboats should make their approach under power), while noting the effects of wind and current, and adjusting the boat accordingly. Steer parallel to the host until even alongside, then bring your vessel to a stop and place the engine in neutral. At this point the bow line would be heaved to the host vessel’s foredeck, followed quickly by the stern. Once bow and stern lines are made fast, position and secure the spring lines and switch off the engine. Sailboats rafting up will want to position themselves so that their spreaders won’t crash into each should the boats roll. If you can’t do a parallel approach, steer towards the bow of the host boat at a 45-degree angle, toss over your bow line, then allow your boat to fall back and settle gently beside the host boat by using the wind or current. Never make a T-bone approach and always keep your engine running and ready for instant use until secured alongside. All tied up Lines can be attached to cleats, winches or any deck hardware designed to take a side load. They should be snug enough to hold the boats close together, essentially making them one with the raft. Fenders should be positioned at the beamiest part of your boat (usually amidships) to prevent hull-to-hull contact. Loose lines equate to excessive movement during wakes or waves. Check line tightness and fender placement regularly during your raft-up to prevent hull damage. Departing Departures from a raft-up should ideally take place in the reverse order of your arrival. First, start your engine. Then, when ready to depart, remove lines in the opposite order they were attached: Spring lines first, followed by the stern line, then bow. If the host boat is leaving as well, stand by a bit to see if they need any help raising the anchor. ★

RAFT-UP ETIQUETTE 1. Respect the privacy of the boats next to you. 2. If you have to cross from one boat to the next, board amidships (or where it’s easiest), but cross each boat over the bow, rather than the cockpit. For all powerboat raftups, another option may be lining up the sterns so people can pass from vessel to vessel on the swim platforms. 3. Avoid stepping on varnished bright work — even with those fancy new deck shoes! 4. Be considerate about music volume, vulgar language or anything else that could annoy/offend your neighbors. 5. Bring enough food and beverages to share! 6. Lend a hand as boats arrive and leave.

ASK THE EXPERT by Elizabeth Altick

Seeing Your Way in the Dark FLIR Maritime marketing manager Jim McGowan sheds light on the many uses for thermal night vision cameras.

FLIR Maritime 9 Townsend West Nashua, New Hampshire 03063 603-324-7900 FLIR.COM

LB: Which thermal night vision camera models are most popular with Great Lakes/freshwater boaters?

McGowan: FLIR’s first entry into the recreational marine market came in 2006 with our original FLIR Navigator Pan and Tilt thermal camera. It was really the first time recreational boaters had seen thermal imaging technology on a level that was accessible to them. We followed that up in 2008 with our FLIR M-Series, which is recognized as the gold standard in thermal imaging for the recreational market.

McGowan: Our M-Series fixed cameras and MD-Series pan and tilt models are our most popular models for cruising and fishing boats. The MD-Series are compact cameras that provide excellent look-ahead visibility for objects in the boat’s path. The M-Series models offer pan and tilt capability, and the slew-to-cue integration with many popular radar and chartplotter systems from Raymarine, Garmin, Furuno and Simrad.

LB: How does it work?

McGowan: Thermal imaging works similar to a video camera, but instead of being sensitive to visible light it sees only infrared heat energy. Everything gives off infrared energy, regardless of whether it’s cold or hot. The thermal camera can measure the minute differences in temperature across a scene, and turn that into a picture we can see with our eyes. People often call it “night vision,” but the beauty of this technology is it works just as well during the day; infrared thermal imagers can see right through glare, haze, blinding sun, urban backlighting and more. LB: How does FLIR assist in navigation at night?

McGowan: One of the great things about thermal imaging is it requires almost no training to use it. If you’ve ever watched TV, you can operate a thermal camera. On the water the thermal camera is a great tool for identifying navigation aids, putting eyes on approaching traffic, and spotting floating and fixed hazards in the boat’s path. LB: How do thermal night vision cameras contribute to safety? What types of hazards can they detect?

McGowan: Thermal cameras can see pretty much everything at or above the surface of the water: Rocks, floating debris, logs, boats without lights, kayakers, a man overboard, paddle boarders and even wildlife on the surface. Because they all emit heat at some level, the FLIR thermal camera can detect them all. ELIZABETH ALTICK specializes in recreational marine, cultural and humaninterest subjects. She was formerly executive editor of a recreational boating magazine.

32

JUNE 2016

|

LB: How far away can these cameras detect an object on the water?

McGowan: Our M625XP thermal camera — which is one of our most popular models — can spot a person in the water at ranges up 2,700 feet (just under a half-mile.) It can detect something the size of small boat at a distance of 1.4 miles.

LAKELANDBOATING.COM

LB: We understand FLIR offers a new handheld model. What are its advantages?

McGowan: That new handheld is the OceanScout TK, and its breakthrough price of $599 puts thermal imaging technology in reach of every boater. The OceanScout TK is super compact and can also shoot thermal video and snapshots. It’s powered by a long-life lithium-ion battery so you can boat and fish late into the night or get an early start and go all day. LB: Can these images be recorded?

McGowan: Our OceanScout TK handheld can save up to 1,000 snapshots and five hours of video to its internal memory. The video from our fixed-mount cameras can be recorded with a digital video recorder. LB: Can an owner install these cameras?

McGowan: Most competent do-it-yourselfers can install a thermal camera in a few hours. Just make sure it’s mounted securely to the boat, and all of the connections are dressed and protected from the weather. Of course, if you don’t want to do it yourself, FLIR has a network of factorytrained dealers who can do it for you. They can even do all the advanced integration work to make the camera talk to your radar and other electronics too. LB: What’s the price range of these cameras?

McGowan: Our OceanScout TK handheld sells for $599 and fits right in your pocket. Our MD-Series fixed-mount cameras start at about $3,500 and our MD-Series with pan and tilt start at $8,995. We also have systems for superyachts and commercial ships. LB: Where can I find out more about these cameras?

McGowan: The best place to start is at FLIR.COM/MARINE. Your local FLIR Maritime dealer is also an excellent resource. ★

y husband’s friend, Ed, owned a big boat. One weekend he invited some family members on it for the day. “My wife drove the boat and trailer to the dock while several cars followed us to the parking lot,” Ed recalls. “We tied up at the dock, packed up and everyone got on-board. We were out in the water for about 10 hours and it was a great day. When we were ready for the truck and trailer, I couldn’t find my keys. My wife said she must have left them in the truck.” When Ed got back to the parking lot, he was surprised to see the truck still there. “When I got to the truck, the windows were rolled down and it was idling,” Ed continues. “The truck had been in the parking lot for about 12 hours, with the windows down, the key in it and running. A yellow gas light was flashing, indicating that it was low on gas. In fact, there was barely enough gas to get to a station and fill up before it cut off.” Ed laughs as he tells this story, but it could have ended badly. The moral: Even seasoned boaters need a checklist reminder for the little things easily forgotten — like turning off the car and bringing along the keys. Download a simple checklist BOATSAFE.COM’S checklist includes items that pass Coast Guard regulations on the water, such as life jackets, distress-signaling devices, navigation rules, documents and charts. The checklist suggests basic tools, lines and fenders for docking, anchors and fire extinguishers. It also suggests checking the bilges, ventilation, batteries, oil and fuel, and the weather forecast before heading out. Update the checklist with other items you may need, including food and water, emergency supplies, a first aid kit, a cell phone charger, chartplotter and a VHF radio. Laminate the checklist for use at home and on the boat.

Don’t forget these… NOAA weather broadcasts are received nationwide on a NOAA Weather Receiver Radio or marine VHF radio between 162.400 and 162.550 megahertz (MHz) for the U.S. and Canada, while the Canadian Weatheradio network is in English and French. Additionally, the weather channels have WX1-10 designations on the VHF (NWS.NOAA.GOV/ NWR). Check the Local Notice to Mariners (NAVCEN.USCG. GOV) for construction, bridge work, safety issues and other information before going out. Adding a GPS app on an electronic tablet is great but having a backup paper chart is prudent. Use the most recent, updated charts for your trip. Look for nautical charts online — there are at least ten NOAA authorized vendors online with various prices based on chart quality.

Lastly, if there is a possibility of entering Canadian waters, firearms are illegal and a passport is required, even for kayaks. Make it personal Checklists have bulleted information, not detailed instructions. Therefore, the captain should pass on information to passengers, including where the fire extinguisher is located and how to properly wear a life jacket. Get everyone involved by assigning checklist responsibilities before getting underway and again while heading back to the dock. Create a float plan Despite the best preparations, things happen: The weather changes, you’re motoring in the dark, or worse, you’re stranded and can’t get back. Float plans include a cruise path or destination, cruise length, ETA and return information. Likewise, if you’re going out for a few hours, create an informal plan, including a cell phone number, tow vehicle description and boat identification, and inform a friend or family member. Float plans are for every water-going vessel — from kayaks to yachts. In August 2015, a float plan with a cellphone call expedited the rescue of three people and a dog stranded on a grounded boat on Middle Sister Island in Lake Erie. The boaters were disoriented after not being able to find a marina entrance and used a cell phone to call in the problem. The boat set anchor for the night but it came loose and the boat drifted to shore. Lacking communications there, they hung their life jackets in the trees to attract attention and were rescued the next day. The Coast Guard’s online float plan (FLOATPLANCENTRAL. CGAUX.ORG) may be customized and printed for your marina manager or friend to oversee. You can also download the Coast Guard’s new mobile app and file a float plan directly from your phone (USCG.MIL/MOBILE). When you reach your destination or if your plans change, notify your float plan holder. If you don’t make contact within a scheduled time, the information will be used to expedite a rescue. Whether your boat trip is just for the afternoon or longer, checklists and float plans keep boaters organized and safe. However, these are only effective if they are implemented. As a final precaution, don’t use social media to announce a boating trip; protect yourself and keep your home and belongings safe by sending texts or emails to your float plan holder, and save travel log experiences for later. ★

Make sure you bring along everything on your safety checklist, including distresssignaling devices, a first aid kit and life jackets.

The new U.S. Coast Guard mobile app allows you to file a float plan directly from your smartphone.

he Formula 310 Bowrider is proof that great things don’t strictly come in small packages. With plenty of space and a luxurious, newly updated interior, Formula’s flagship bowrider balances lavish appointments with legendary performance. “The 310 Bowrider is an extremely versatile boat with its molded wet bar, standard head, generous swim platform and all-new seating,” says Scott Smith, marketing manager for Formula Boats. “But it retains the same legendary Formula performance, allowing it to take on Big Water and still deliver a comfortable ride.” Modular seating in the bow offers plenty of room to stretch out in a space that can be easily converted to a large sunpad. In the aft cockpit, an inviting wraparound U-shaped seat faces to port, allowing easy passage through the boat without anyone needing to move. A split seatback cushion allows portions of the transom seat to face forward, aft, or lie flat to extend the rear sunpad. Similar split rear seatbacks on the double-wide helm seat, plus a full-length portside lounger, create an interior with tremendous versatility.

atteras enjoys a glowing reputation as the builder of some of the world’s most popular cruising yachts, and it only takes a few minutes aboard the 70 Motor Yacht to understand why. The company’s extensive experience in building premium cruisers is evident everywhere, in the build quality, craftsmanship and thoughtful designs. “The Hatteras 70 Motor Yacht’s four-stateroom layout is ideal for Great Lakes cruising,” says Bay Marine’s Mark Felhofer (920-743-6526; BAYMARINE.NET). “The Mediterranean-inspired flybridge and open main deck create an inviting atmosphere with stunning views. Hatteras’ reputation for quality is found throughout the boat and is most evident in its exhilarating ride.” With a 21-foot beam that’s one of the widest in its class, the 70 Motor Yacht offers the kind of interior space one would associate with a much larger boat. The open flybridge, with its multiple seating options, makes the most of enjoying the great outdoors and provides a variety of sunning spaces, quiet spots to read a good book, or options for enjoying a nice meal al fresco. A flybridge wet bar, which includes a refrigerator, icemaker and ample storage for supplies and

glassware, is a welcome touch, as is the available 32,000 BTU reverse-cycle air conditioner, keeping things comfortable when temperatures turn either steamy or chilly. Dining and relaxing on the aft deck centers around the large teak table and molded bench seat along the transom, which is well protected by the extension of the boat deck overhead. Inside, the spacious, open-concept deckhouse salon includes an entertainment center with a 40-inch LED TV on a lift, with home theater surround sound and a DVD player. DECK BOAT REVIVAL

AFTER

sampling boats at winter boat shows around the country, an emerging trend is the renaissance of the deck boat as an alternative to pontoons. Four Winns, sensing the shift in buyers’ tastes, introduced a feature-rich deck boat: The HD270, available in both sterndrive and outboard engine power models, along with a slightly shorter model, the HD240 (more on this later). Geared towards families who want the versatility of enjoying a full day on the water, the HD270 boasts the most coolers (fixed and carry-on) and storage of any new model this year. Once you leave the ramp, there is zero need to return until the sun goes down. Yes, that means there is an enclosed head, and for the ultimate in toilet tidiness, an optional electric toilet with pump-out.

39

LOUNGE IN COMFORT Built on Four Winns’ exclusive split-chine Stable Vee hull, the seating layout takes full advantage of the 8-foot, 5-inch beam. Rather than narrowing at the bow like many runabouts, the HD270 offers a generous bow with lounger-like seating and deep backrests for comfort or security for passengers. An optional drop-in table is ideal for snacks and meals and it stores neatly out of the way behind one of the backrests. Each seat cushion is hinged for easy access to dry storage below: A forward hatch reveals a built-in cooler, while the bow hatch hides a telescoping boarding ladder and room for anchor storage. Progressive boat builders, Four Winns included, are engineering cockpit bucket seats to add tremendous functionality. Wrapped in complimentary colored two-tone, hand-stitched Aquaflex vinyl, the cockpit seats feature fold-down armrests and can also recline. The term “flip-up thigh bolster” is redefined on this boat thanks to a clever, sturdy machined hinge, which allows the entire seat platform to rotate up and back into the seat, creating more of a booster seat to see over the windshield. CLEVER DESIGNS Even the seatback becomes a useful pocket for storing more than an iPad, airline safety card and dog-eared copy of Sky Magazine (my fellow Delta MM’s know what I’m talking about). Smartphones, swim fins, wallets and even car keys finally have a place to hide on the boat without getting bounced around. Swivel both bucket seats 180 degrees and join in on cockpit conversations. Guests will be comfortable in the port and starboard cushioned bench seats with an aft wraparound lounger. Design engineers also figured out how to incorporate a circular cockpit table without the need for a telescoping base and floor-mounted receptacle, which typically ends up as a toe stubbing, dirt catching and ill-fitting carpet cutout. The support post on the cockpit table is L-shaped and slides into a surface mounting plate attached below the cushion line in the starboard corner. This is a natural ergonomic location, offers stability and, as a bonus, the table has two recessed cup holders. Unlike other boats where the transom seat pulls double-duty — reversing to create forward or swim platform seating — Four Winns goes a step beyond and gives you an extra two seats facing aft. The more petite crowd will likely squeeze three onto the bench, but Mom and Dad are going to fight them for this prized position while anchored up enjoying a morning mimosa or sunset.

SPECS

GET MOVING Whether you choose the sterndrive or outboard model, access to the swim platform is identical on both. The sight lines are obviously unencumbered with the engine drive below the waterline, however the aft seating is mounted high enough that on the outboard model you’ll easily look over the engine cowling. Industry-wide outboard advancements in both fuel efficiency and quietness swung the power pendulum in favor of Mercury, Yamaha and Evinrude, and all three brands are options on the 270 OB configuration. For those who prefer sterndrives, MerCruiser and Volvo Penta are the standards in a surprising range of horsepower and digital throttle control. I asked Four Winns if they’ve seen a preference develop as sterndrive sales across all brands have never recovered from pre-recession levels. They tell me it’s primarily a geographical toss up, with Great Lakes boaters favoring sterndrives and those in more year-round boating climates opting for outboards. Four Winns offers the HD270 with a standard custom, low-profile tandem trailer. The foldaway tongue solves garage storage problems. The trailer is constructed using closed box steel with a polyurethane finish and features bearing protection, disc brakes and submersible LED lighting. Unlike other trailers, this one is fully welded, protecting against corrosion and loose bolts. With that in mind, inexpensive fuel for the car should translate into summer adventures at more places than just your favorite lake. Why not map out a dozen weekend destinations with your friends? Between the extra coolers, storage for water toys and yes, the onboard head, the Four Winns HD270 and HD270 OB models are made for sunup to sundown, nonstop fun. ★

I

t’s been said that you only have one chance to make a first impression. In the case of the Cruisers Yachts 54 Cantius, they had two chances to impress me. And they did! I first laid eyes on this new model during her world premiere at the Yachts Miami Beach Boat Show earlier this year. From the outside, her profile is well proportioned between the freeboard, hull length and height of house. Full-length side rails offer handholds from where you step up onto the side deck, all the way forward to the peak. Large, curved, side salon windows enhance visibility and flood the interior with ambient lighting, while hullside windows bring in light below.

Lasting impression

To prove that one should not only judge a boat by its good looks, I recently got another introduction; this time to check out the amenities on-board as well as to pass some water under her keel. I noticed immediately upon descending into the engine room the amount of space to move about. The 54 Cantius is no slouch: She has a pair of Volvo Penta IPS 950 blocks with pods, producing 725 hp each. It takes up some decent real estate, yet there’s room to get up, over and around these power plants. Heck, there’s 6 feet of headroom and, yup, I could stand straight up! Fuel filters are mounted on the forward bulkhead for easy access, the Cummins Onan generator is centerline for easy maintenance, and the pod drives are accessible and, more importantly, visible to see any issues. “Out of sight, out of mind” is not good on a boat — at least in my book. Cruisers has successfully blended the inside/outside concept with the features on the main deck. They also keep it simple with a “modular” approach to the layout (this is a good thing), with the thinking “A place for everything, everything has a place.” Let me expound: First, it’s a pretty straight run from the aft deck through the salon to the helm/lower staircase area — no weaving and bobbing around obstructions. Next, the galley is aft to port, making it a central repository for food, meal prep and serving. It also keeps the chef (typically the owner) in the middle of the action when the guests are spread fore and aft. With a U-shaped design, the galley appliances are central to the operation. On this boat (hull No. 1 of the 54 Cantius line) there’s a Cuisinart undercounter convection microwave, a Vitrifrigo drawer-style fridge/freezer, a recessed Whale two-burner flat cooktop with counter-cover and double stainless steel sinks with designer multi-angle faucet. Across to starboard is a nook that houses a third fridge/freezer drawer unit, along with a Fisher & Paykel dishwasher drawer unit.

All about comfort

Fold back the aft stainless steel glass door/wall combo unit and lower the power-actuated window; you have successfully integrated the aft deck with galley/salon areas. You’ll find a U-shaped settee aft with a double-post wood table — an electric, retractable awning built into the hardtop can cover it. With a release from the backside, the seating hinges forward from the cockpit and has great storage beneath for fenders, lines, supplies and more. A great idea is the aft deck twin barstools, installed on the portside next to the aft window. Guests can be part of any conversation, or just enjoy a cocktail at the bar. To the side is the grill station, in close proximity to the galley. Interior wise, it’s all about comfort. Forward of the galley to port is a U-shaped settee and wood table with foldout leafs and wood-finished pedestal. The cushions are thick and plush, and you’ll be tempted to just stretch out and kick back a bit. Or you can do that on the sofa that’s across to starboard, in front of the recessed TV. Our 54 Cantius was equipped with a couple of the Polk Soundbar 5000 speakers, which offer surround sound quality for TV, movies or Bluetooth-connected audio

devices. The tone is crisp and the sound follows you through the salon, instead of just emanating from one location. A few more features of the salon are the glass-paneled sunroof with shade, side opening windows with blinds, overhead lighting, black oak Amtico flooring and Tay oak wood on the walls.

Sleek navigation

You’ll be hard pressed to not like the starboard helm station. The seat is double-wide for extra elbow room or a guest navigator. The station can be equipped with Raymarine electronics or a Volvo Glass Cockpit system; it’s essentially a clean, well-designed, easy-to-use dashboard with integrated engine and navigation control in one place. Touch-screen and pinch-to-zoom make easy work out of managing ship systems, controlling lights and climate settings, and, of course, navigation. Housed in dual 12-inch screens, the helm is ergonomically designed for comfort, including the bank of rocker switches, throttle controls on the right side, a Volvo joystick controller on left and a Volvo Penta engine display. It’s notable that the joystick is to the left, as it allows the operator to stand centerline while backing and have good access to the stick. Not to be outdone by the main deck, the accommodations on the lower deck are to be appreciated. Down a few steps is the atrium with a bright and open-air feel, thanks to the port helm cutaway above. Across is a sofa, which creates a nice cozy hideaway from the main deck while not being subjected to a stateroom. Or opt for a third enclosed stateroom with upper/lower bunks. Forward is the VIP with centerline island queen berth, hullside windows, hanging locker and a TV. Above are four skylights and a hatch for added light or night viewing. Shades can cover the ports to keep things cool inside. Sharing the head with daytime users, it has a Danze faucet with deep sink and a Dometic head. There is no shower here, as there is a private, separate shower room on the other side of the VIP room — another great functional feature, as one can shower while someone else uses the head. For the commander, there’s the lavishly appointed mid-ship, full-beam master suite. More than just a stateroom, it has a private walk-down entrance, queen-size berth, walk-in closet and portside credenza with drawers. An interesting feature is the starboard café table; it can work as a breakfast nook, work area for laptop or papers, or as a vanity. The side windows open, allowing for cross ventilation, and there’s room for a washer/ dryer unit. Included in the master is a full en-suite head with a shower stall, a Danze faucet, a basin sink and a Dometic head.

By the numbers

The 54 Cantius came in on my readings almost spot-on to what the manufacturer’s spec sheet states. Capt. Kim Brown was behind the wheel dialing up several RPM breaks so I could get some good digits. At 1,200 RPM, the 54 runs up to 10.5 mph, but step it up to 1,800 RPM and you’re cruising to over 25 mph. Top end was 42 mph at WOT (2,550 RPM). Power is needed to propel this 47,000-pound fiberglass platform (loaded with fuel and water) through the water, and the 725-hp Volvos do the job. Heading to the foredeck dual reclining sunpads is easy with wide side decks, high railings and non-skid decking. Anchor windlass and gear is recessed in a locker, sparing toes. Following in the genealogy of the Cantius line, the 54 Cantius is new, fresh and ready to make a lasting impression. ★

Border Patrol magine a cruising area with more than 10,000 miles of coastline to explore. The shores include sandy beaches, parks, secluded islands, small towns brimming with history and major cities offering multicultural experiences. You will share the waterways with ocean-going vessels even though you are far from the ocean. Where can this be, you ask? Try the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence Seaway between Canada and the United States. “It’s such a beautiful area,” says Eddy Johnsen. He and his wife, Linda, first cruised the Great Lakes in 2013 aboard their 36-foot classic Grand Banks trawler, Spiritus, home ported in Pensacola, Florida. “I think the people up there want to keep it to themselves — it’s that special. We had not heard much about the area and were certainly not expecting such a wonderful cruising experience.” The Johnsens entered Canada at Kingston, Ontario, cruised the Trent-Severn Waterway, and re-entered the U.S. at DeTour, Michigan, on Drummond Island.

What to know before you go

Cruisers, both U.S. and Canadian, need to be aware that they are crossing international borders. Follow each country’s rules (which you can find online) and you should have no problems. Disregard them and you could face a fine of up to $1,000 and seizure of your boat. For citizens of both countries, it is helpful to have a NEXUS card: A “Trusted Traveler” program between the U.S. and Canada, similar to pre-screening at airports. You will need one for each person traveling with you. You can apply online, receive a conditional acceptance and then will be interviewed. You must have both U.S. and Canadian approval. Also available is a Homeland Security decal for private vessels over 30-feet long. Again, you can apply and pay an annual user fee ($27.50 USD) online. The purpose of both programs is to expedite clearance. Returning to or entering the U.S., you must call the nearest Customs and Border Protection (CBP) office. Johnsen recommends calling four hours ahead of your scheduled arrival. If you have

a NEXUS card, an I-68 form, or participate in the Outlying Area Reporting System (OARS) or Small Vessel Reporting System (SVRS), you may not have to report in person. Details on each are available at the CBP’s website (CBP.GOV). The Johnsens didn’t have any of the above but scheduled their arrival just before lunch. “The Border Patrol official was waiting on the dock for us,” Eddy says. “We had a very quick visit!”

Welcome home

Foster and Susan Schucker, owners of Quo Vadimus, a Bayliner 4588 with a hailing port of Nowhere, Oklahoma, cruised Canadian waters in 2014. They entered in Trenton, Ontario and cruised the Trent-Severn and the North Channel before exiting at Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, and clearing in at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. They did not have NEXUS cards but they did have the Homeland Security decal. Foster sums up the experience: “From Sault Ste. Marie, Canada I called U.S. Customs in Michigan saying, ‘We are leaving now; expect the trip across the river to take 15 minutes.’ We docked and the agent was there. He asked to come aboard and we sat him in the salon. He asked for our IDs (passports provided), copied the numbers down on a form, copied the Homeland ID number, petted the cat and welcomed us home.” Don Bennett and Freya Petersen, who live in Peterborough, Ontario, bought their 48-foot Sea Ray, Last Resort, in Florida, registering it offshore. They decided to cruise America’s Great Loop. They left the U.S. at Oswego, New York with NEXUS cards; cleared in at Belleville, Ontario, to cruise through Georgian Bay and the North Channel; then cruised to Chicago to continue the Loop to Florida. They had no problems, but received a reminder that they “were required to phone in daily their location.” Don adds, “And they keep track! If you skip a day, they ask where you were yesterday.”

Be advised

So, how is it on the Canadian side? Don and Freya had an exceptional experience that they want to warn others about; Canadians who are considering buying a boat in the U.S. should be advised. When they arrived in Belleville, planning just a short cruise before taking the boat back to the States, they were greeted with a big surprise. Don and

Cruising foreign waters not so far from home. by Suzi DuRant

Freya say that the Canadian officials “wanted us to pay 13 percent of the sales price within 24 hours. If not, we had to return directly to the U.S.” All they wanted was a short cruise, never intending to leave the boat in Canada. After scrambling, they did pay the amount and continued on their way. The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) requires that even if a U.S. vessel does not intend to land in Canada, the captain must call (1-888-226-7277) to report its presence in Canadian waters. If you happen to be tacking up a lake, you only need to call in once. If you are planning to go ashore — and most cruisers are — the CBSA wants you to “go directly to a Telephone Reporting Site-Marine (TRS/M) and follow the instructions posted on location to contact the Telephone Reporting Centre (TRC) and request clearance to enter Canada. Only the owner/operator may leave the boat to place the call to the TRC. Everyone else must remain on-board until the CBSA gives authorization.” You will have to answer questions about everyone on-board, your plans and what you have aboard. The lists are available on the CBSA website (CBSA-ASFC.GC.CA). If everything is in order, the official will give you a reporting number and send you on your way — no further reporting necessary!

Last reminders

Both the Johnsens and the Schuckers recommend having all your information ready; you’ll probably speak on a camera phone and show passports and NEXUS cards.

They recommend being able to answer “no” to firearms aboard and to have alcoholic beverages only for personal consumption. Also, don’t carry live plants. Eddy says that a boat arrived right behind him and had a plant. “The woman offered to give it to the official but he refused. They turned around as if to return to the U.S. I think she probably tossed it overboard and came back. I never met a Looper who had to do anything other than call in.” Foster remembers entering Canada at Trenton on a Sunday. “We had the Homeland sticker, but not any special passes. I called the 800 number on the dock and gave my name and my boat name. I was asked who was on the boat; I gave them Susan’s name and told Resources them that I had a cat, Belle, aboard.” The official asked, “Does the cat have all Customs & Border Patrol (U.S.): the shots?” CBP.GOV/TRAVEL Foster responded, “Yes.” “Do you have firearms, weapons, drugs, killer Canada Border Services Agency: robots, bullets, fresh citrus, meat or fish that’s not CBSA-ASFC.GC.CA frozen?” they asked. “No,” he responded. American Great Loop Cruising “Welcome to Canada. Your number is 123456.” Association: GREATLOOP.ORG If you’re interested in cruising the Great Lakes, this should give you plenty of confidence to face Great Lakes Cruising Club: GLCCLUB.COM/BOATING-ANDthe not-so-bad bureaucracy and enjoy some idyllic USCANADA-BORDER cruising spots. trials for the first time in history.

lite teams from around the world compete every few years for the America’s Cup, regarded as the oldest

trophy of any international competition. And each year, the stakes get a little bit higher as boats become more high-tech, precise and faster. During this year’s Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series event circuit — a sequence of qualifying races leading up to the 35th America’s Cup taking place in Bermuda in May 2017 — sailors will face yet another twist: Freshwater. For the first time in its 164-year history, the America’s Cup will hold races on freshwater when teams face off in Chicago this June. The event comes after contests in Oman and New York, and before the teams set off for Portsmouth, England and Toulon, France.

Friendly challenge

The America’s Cup dates back to 1851, when a schooner representing the New York Yacht Club defeated the British — a significant victory for the young democracy — to win the Royal Yacht Squadron’s 100 Pound Cup. Amid much celebration, the trophy was brought to New York and donated to the New York Yacht Club to become “a perpetual challenge cup for friendly competition between nations,” the Deed of Gift states. The trophy was named the America’s Cup after the winning schooner, the America. Since that race in 1851, only four nations have managed to win the America’s Cup for themselves. In fact, it took more than 100 years for the cup to leave New York in 1983, when Australia clinched the top spot. America snatched the cup back in ’87, and then lost it to New Zealand in ’88. After a few rounds between the U.S. and the Kiwis, Switzerland won the cup in 2003 and 2007. Oracle Team USA is the current America’s Cup defender and two-time winner (2010 and 2013). During the last Cup, Team USA rose from a 1-8 deficit against Team New Zealand, winning eight

Speed and intensity

The America’s Cup has often changed hands when new boat designs or technology are introduced. For example, today’s America’s Cup teams currently race in AC45f catamarans, 45-foot boats that can reach speeds of more than 50 mph. This is due to the development of hydrofoils in the past few years, which give the boats the ability to “foil” — or literally lift out of the water — in order to reduce water drag and increase speed. Due to a litigious history, each team is required to meet certain boat design standards and requirements. However, there are a few areas open for the teams to tweak. Although hydrofoiling allows teams to go faster on smaller boats, operating these speed-demons also requires an extraordinary amount of concentration, skill and physical strength to keep the boats cast upright. Decisions on the water often must be made in a split second. Just in March, Oracle Team USA capsized during a training run in Bermuda. Luckily no one was injured and there was only minimal boat damage. According to Tod Reynolds, director of the Match Race Center in Chicago, which is organizing the race, the speeds and intensity of America’s Cup catamarans are what make every race an adrenaline rush, even for spectators. “What’s so amazing about these boats is that they create

50

compelling racing in any condition,” Reynolds says. “The America’s Cup is not just a sailboat race.” If high-speed flying boats weren’t enticing enough, Reynolds says that racing in Chicago has the potential to make things that much more exciting. “If we get a good weather day, these boats will set speed records,” he says. One of the main goals of research and development teams for America’s Cup catamarans is to reduce drag — whether that’s in the water or the air. Since freshwater is less viscous than saltwater, Reynolds predicts that the freshwater in Lake Michigan might produce less drag on boats (at least, the part of the boats that actually remains in the water). Therefore, under perfect conditions, Reynolds says the catamarans could reach unprecedented speeds. The catch, of course, is Chicago weather. “The unpredictability of Chicago makes it a unique and a tricky location,” says Matt Cassidy, a member of Oracle Team USA. Cassidy says most racing venues, such as San Francisco, have consistent wind patterns. The wind in Chicago, however, can be anyone’s guess. A breeze from the north or south would be favorable, he says, but a westerly breeze is more difficult to deal with. Cassidy says part of Oracle Team USA’s preparation for Chicago will include going over the city’s wind history for June. “You have to deal with what you’re given and be a good, well-rounded team,” he says.

Home team

Cassidy is a bow/grinder on Oracle Team USA; each boat sails with five crewmembers. Although he doesn’t believe it will give him an undue advantage in June, Cassidy is already familiar with the sailing and boating community in Chicago. He lived in the city for seven years, during which he worked with the Match Race Center

consecutive races to clinch the victory. The Wall Street Journal called it “one of the greatest comebacks in sports history.” The team is currently based in Bermuda, where they’re training and honing their boat design for the next Cup final in 2017.

early on in his professional sailing career. Originally from Florida, Cassidy spent summers sailing in Harbor Springs, Michigan. After attending the University of Charleston, Cassidy moved to San Diego where he started racing professionally. During his career, Cassidy has competed in more than 30 world and national championships and has won a number of competitions. Last year he moved with his family to Bermuda to prepare for the 35th America’s Cup. Since all of the sailors competing in the America’s Cup are extremely experienced in their own right, Cassidy thinks the greatest advantage that Oracle Team USA will have in Chicago is their home-team status. “It’s going to be awesome,” Cassidy says. He’s looking forward to hearing the cheers of the crowd when the racing begins. “Chicago has a huge boating culture. In the summertime, there’s hundreds of sail and powerboats out. Everyone loves the water.”

Windy City celebration

During the three-day racing event in Chicago from June 10-12, Oracle Team USA will face crews from New Zealand, Japan, the U.K., France, Australia and Switzerland. Festivities in Chicago begin on Friday, June 10 with an opening ceremony, live entertainment and a fireworks show. Official racing begins the next day at 1:30 p.m., followed by a sailor Q&A and autograph session. Things wrap up on Sunday with finals at 1:30 p.m. The races are being held right in the heart of downtown Chicago at Navy Pier, near the Shedd Aquarium, Adler Planetarium, Field Museum and with great views of the skyline. In addition, 2016 marks Navy Pier’s 100th anniversary. In their spare time, visitors can take a ride on the Pier’s new Ferris wheel.

The starting line is right off the Pier, within the harbor’s outer breakwall, essentially providing the racing venue with four sides. Teams will sail south from the Pier and loop back. Ticketholders watching from stands on Navy Pier will have the opportunity to be mere boat-lengths away from the race. Members of the public who aren’t able to snatch up tickets won’t miss out on all the fun, either. Nearby Monroe Harbor will provide public viewing space along the shoreline. Fans can also view the race from the breakwalls along the Shedd Aquarium and the Adler Planetarium. Race organizers have also designated spectator areas in the water for boaters who want to raft-up and watch the races with the Chicago skyline in the background. With the Boaters Pass, out-of-towners can gain access to discounted transient dockage and ramp launching at 31st Street and Monroe Harbor. The Boat Pass comes with other perks as well, such as two tickets to the opening ceremony and an invitation to the “Boaters Bash” on Saturday afternoon. Organizers recommend reserving space well in advance. If spectators want a break from the action, Chicago offers 14 miles of beaches ripe for exploration. Countless bars, restaurants, parks and attractions are a mere train, bus or taxi ride away. However, it seems more likely that the most exciting attraction in Chicago this June will be the catamarans flying over like Michigan. “This is the first time this kind of racing has been in Chicago,” Cassidy says. “People, even if they’re even remotely curious, really need to come down and check it out. I think they’ll be really surprised with how cool the racing is and how fast the boats are.” H

Take it to the Next Level!

You don’t have to be a pro to experience America’s Cup sailing firsthand: with Next Level Sailing Chicago, boating enthusiasts can book a racing tour or private yacht charter on two retired International America’s Cup Class (IACC) yachts. The company, which launched in 2015, will take boaters out to race on the 80-foot yachts with 110-foot masts for 2.5 hours from May to October. Individuals, families and corporate team building groups (up to 36 guests) have the opportunity to race on Lake Michigan alongside the Windy City skyscrapers. If you don’t feel like racing, take the boat for a relaxing cruise. This isn’t a hands-off experience; participants are able to actively help race the boat. Sorry, the Stars & Stripes and the Abracadabra are monohull yachts, so no hydrofoiling! The boats were raced by famous skipper Dennis Conner and were transported from America’s Cup Harbor in San Diego, California to their new home in Chicago. These boats are the most recent generation of monohull America’s Cup yachts. The Abracadabra is adorned with a painting by legendary marine artist Wyland. You’ll quickly be able to point out this boat from the lineup, with whales, dolphins and marlin covering the yacht. p until now, the most dangerous thing I’ve done around the water was sign loan papers for my first yacht. I was 37, physically in good shape and ready to live the dream. Fast-forward 25 years — make that warp speed ahead — and both my bank account and waistline are grossly out of proportion. Whatever would possess a man of my age to try paddle boarding? My analyst suggests a Ponce de Leon syndrome. The analyst, a stockbroker (not the stereotypical couch PhD) leaves the marina at dawn and paddles 3 miles to work. I hate to admit it, but he looks good, swears he has more energy and has found an alternative to hitting the treadmill. Stand-Up Paddle Boarding (SUP) is the latest Fountain of Youth elixir gaining traction with traditional boaters. According to the annual Outdoor Recreation Topline Report, over the past three years Stand-Up Paddling was the top outdoor activity for growth, while participation increased an average of 26 percent from 2012 to 2015. Other paddle activities, including

kayak fishing, whitewater kayaking and sea/tour kayaking also saw big increases in participation over the three-year period. So popular are paddle boards that one of Lake Michigan’s premier yacht manufacturers, Tiara, commissioned its new Q44 Adventure Yacht to include dedicated space and storage for SUPs, kayaks and all the toys that come along on day yachting ventures. “The average Tiara customer and many competitive brand customers are using their boats differently today,” notes Leon Slikkers, chairman of S2 Yachts, “and the Q44 appeals to this emerging marketplace.” Stand-Up Paddling is actually 30 years old but seems to have exploded in 2005. SUPs now have the attention of marine retailers like West Marine, Walker Bay Boats and Hobie, who are all dedicating massive resources to lure more young people (or those of us who think we are) to the water. Inflatable boards, like the Walker Bay AIRIS HardTop, which rolls up into a large yet manageable backpack, and accessorized paddle boards that look like they’ve been outfitted for

fishing in a James Bond movie (complete with rocket launchers and live bait wells), are the result of a decade of outdoor pioneers fond of pushing innovation. This summer, Hobie is introducing the Mirage Eclipse, a marriage of their renowned MirageDrive pedal system with a high-strength advanced composite epoxy hull board. Gym rats will recognize the components of an elliptical machine; However, Hobie has 65 years of experience packed into the design. Jim Czarnowski, Hobie’s director of engineering, describes the MirageDrive as “the heart of the Eclipse.” A natural stepping motion cycles the large topside pedals that connect to powerful underwater fins, which efficiently power the Eclipse. The fins fold against the board for shallow water and beach landings. Steering controls are on the handlebar: Squeeze left or right to turn — no paddle necessary. Traditional boards West Marine paired me up with Zack Eckert, an experienced paddle board enthusiast

With new SUP options from many marine retailers, anglers now have the option to fish directly from a SUP. With storage space for fishing accessories and the ability to reach “hot spots” not possible on a boat, SUP fishing is a fun new way to enjoy being on the water.

Feeling adventurous? Try your hand at whitewater SUPing —an exhilarating form of this paddling watersport.

and manager of the company’s Fishing & Watersports category. I figured we’d spend an hour walking the aisles, looking at boards, asking questions, sipping on a beer. No way, dude! “You’re going to learn how to stand up, find your center of gravity and try out different paddles to experience what I happily discovered is a distinctive difference between work and mental release,” Eckert says. Put another way, the need for two Aleve — or maybe an entire bottle. Laid out on a remote beach was a smorgasbord of fashionable boards, from a $595 entry-level Jimmy Styks 10-foot board to a Surftech competitive model with planing hull and intense graphics. Safety first Before attaching the Velcro leg strap connected to the board, Eckert strapped a life jacket to the front of the board. You can also wear an inflatable waist version to meet Coast Guard requirements. SUPs are considered a vessel once outside of surfing or swimming areas, so children 12 and younger must wear a life jacket and will need a whistle. If you’ve ever paddled a canoe, you understand the need to switch left and right every couple of strokes to hold a steady course or steering. The same is true with a paddle board, but here’s where it gets interesting. Beginners will do about four strokes per side. This, my friend, is a recipe for a week’s supply

of Aleve. By adjusting the height of the paddle to match your natural stance and selecting a handle that matches the size of your hand, you’ll greatly reduce the effort necessary with each stroke. By the way, that’s a $99 paddle: The Jimmy Styks Composite Adjustable SUP Paddle. If you want to make this exercise fun, go for the $269 Surfstow EL-500 carbon fiber, elliptical shaft and sculpted blade paddle — yeah baby! It’s literally as light as a feather, you’re able to do eight strokes before switching left to right. The weight difference is so noticeable that Walgreens will be sending “I miss you” cards instead of coupons for pain relief. Paddles up I won’t oversimplify the experience, but the learning curve for paddle boarding is about 5 to 10 minutes. There were no face plants, and the nervousness and shaky legs quickly disappeared. Suddenly the focus shifted from my feet to the horizon, and I began to take in sights gone by all too fast in a boat or that were too far away to enjoy because of shallow depths. We are only talking a few inches of draft here. Hobie, West Marine and Walker Bay also offer inflatable SUPs complete with carrying case backpacks that include inflators and two-piece paddles. The secret is proper inflation to 15 PSI. Walker Bay’s proprietary AirWeb 6-inch construction creates the stiffness needed for good tracking and performance, while the EVA-covered

fiberglass steps make it feel exactly like a rigid board while paddling. Best of all, they store easily in a compact car, smaller boat, garage or apartment. Options & accessories Since West Marine’s transition from a boat parts supplier to waterlife outfitter, the list of SUP accessories is amusing and amazing. Many boards, like the BOTE 12-foot HD Classic, have a series of strategically located concealed attachment points to accommodate bungees for securing coolers, chairs, fishing rod holders, and yes, your GoPro. I examined one tricked-out model that had a batteryoperated livewell in a cooler-like device. Entry-level boards and paddle packages are in the $600-plus range, with a medium sweet spot of $1,100. If you are into competitive touring, plan on spending $2,000 for a package. And of course the accessories, from car mounts to carbon fiber paddles, can run the total further north than Lake Superior. No one board is perfect for all body weights and activities. A 24-inch-wide racing board with planning hull and extra fins may not suit beginners who will do better with a wider 30-inch board. Above all, spend some time in the store picking up paddles and comparing the weight and grip. Then get out on the water. Boating always adds years to your life — the exercise certainly is healthy, and this is one more way to discover boating. ★

Excellent restaurants, wineries and a large population of artists, combined with a rich heritage, unique natural sites and friendly locals make Prince Edward County a wonderful place to visit. Unwind in Picton

Cruise into Picton Bay, the wide, natural harbor in The County’s largest town of Picton. The Prince Edward County Yacht Club is a small, friendly club that offers transient docking and has reciprocal agreements with many local clubs. Across the bay is the Picton Marina, offering dockage, fuel and a launch ramp. The Picton Harbour Inn, positioned at the head of Picton Bay, has limited docking but can accommodate a boat up to 52 feet. Wake up in the morning with a tasty breakfast at the Inn’s Lighthouse Restaurant, considered the best breakfast in town. After docking, take a short walk up the hill to Main Street for some shopping or fine dining. Perhaps the hardest part of dining in Picton is deciding which of the many restaurants to choose. Head a little farther inland and you’ll find the Waring House Inn, where you can dine at the upscale Amelia’s Garden, known for its seasonal gourmet fair, or at the casual eatery, the Barley Room, which features regular entertainment. The Waring House Inn also hosts recreational cooking classes on-site for chefs of every skill level at The Cookery School. Down the street is The Naval Marine Archive, which features a vast collection of books and research materials available to the public. The building also houses works by the Canadian Society of Marine Artists. Stop over at the historic Regent Theatre, which first opened its doors in 1922. Today, the theater stands as a rare example of an intact Edwardian opera house, hosting musicals, plays and movie screenings year-round. Perhaps you’re a bit tired after all the shopping and museums, or have sore muscles from sailing. Check out one of Picton’s relaxing spas, including the Claramount Inn, Spa & Restaurant and Caruso’s on King Serenity Spa.

Even though you may be sailing the bay in your own boat, I recommend the Picton Pontoon Boat Tour. The captains are knowledgeable and you will learn more about the city’s history than you could on your own.

A look back in time

Picton was originally two villages separated by a marsh and a creek. Most commercial enterprises were in the village of North Hallowell, while South Delhi was more rural but had a number of churches and a courthouse. Although it was not a universally popular move, the two villages were combined in 1837. Nor was the choice of the name Picton. It was chosen by prominent citizen Reverend William Macaulay and named after General Picton, who died at the Battle of Waterloo. Although much admired by Macaulay, he was reputed as an unkind man. Picton is where The County’s most famous lawyer and Canada’s first Prime Minister, Sir John A. MacDonald, managed a law office. In 1830, the Reverend built the Macaulay House, which serves as an excellent example of Loyalist-style architecture. It has since been restored and is now open to the public as part of Macaulay Heritage Park. The former Church of St. Mary Magdalene is also in the park, now operating as the Prince Edward County Museum. The County has a rich United Empire Loyalist history; following the American Revolution, about 500 settlers arrived in Marysburg. The Loyalist history lives on in Prince Edward County’s structures; it is the second largest area of Loyalist-style architecture, second to Willamsburg, Virginia. Shipbuilding was of major importance to this region’s history. The first cargo was lumber, with Prince Edward County’s large trees being used for masts. The first schooner, The Prince Edward, was built in 1798 and was later used in the War of 1812. By mid-century, grain was the main cargo. Unfortunately, with

it being harvested in the fall, transporting it was particularly dangerous. Many ships were lost and the area around Point Petre and Main Duck Island was known as the “Graveyard of Lake Ontario.” Two-thirds of all wrecks in the lake are here. Fishing was also important, mostly lake trout and whitefish. The Marine Park Museum commemorates the rich marine heritage of the island, which has also become a major diving destination. With the introduction of Prohibition, first in Canada then the U.S., rum running became prevalent in The County. Between the Coast Guard and the dangerous waters it was a risky profession. But the rewards, as much as $800 a run, were equally great. The Waupoos Canning Company closed its door more than 31 years ago. In the intervening years, Waupoos Marina grew on the same site on Prince Edward Bay and is now a safe haven and destination point for boaters. The Canning Company provided work for many locals and was a hub for people in the eastern part of The County. Everyone would catch up on local news and issues of the day as the farmers waited their turn to drop off their wagon-load of vegetables. After 27 years, Waupoos Marina has revived the long tradition as a place for people living in or visiting The County to gather on this historic spot. Sailors refer to Waupoos Marina as “the best kept secret on Lake Ontario.”

Thriving vineyards

The newest venture in agriculture is the emergence of wineries — there are now more than 30 wineries in The County. The first winery to plant its roots was Waupoos Estates Winery, which was opened in 2001 by Ed Neuser and Rita Kaimins. Taste their famous Baco Noir wine, specialty crafted

chocolates and gelato while overlooking the Prince Edward Bay. A unique feature is the dock; it’s small and only 4 feet deep, but it’s adequate for docking a small powerboat. The on-site Gazebo Restaurant features works by local artists. TerraCello is a small and relatively new winery. Owner Anthony Auciello learned the art of winemaking from his Italian father and grandfather. When giving a tour, Anthony starts with the vines before heading into the winery for tasting. During the summer, the winery also prepares pizza in a traditional stone oven. Enjoy it on the beautiful patio overlooking the vineyard. Harwood Estate Vineyards in Hillier is Canada’s first and only winery operating entirely on solar energy. The logo, which feature an old sailing mast, will appeal to boaters as much as the excellent wine will. Hinterland Wine Company specializes in creating sparkling wines using traditional methods. They have now branched out into craft beer with the County Road Brewery, located right next door to the winery. Picton’s Three Dog Winery — named after owners’ John and Sacha Squair’s three golden retrievers — offers a dog-friendly place to enjoy a glass of wine. The estate covers 100 acres and currently offers four wines: Sweet Sister Late Harvest Vidal, Dog House White, Dog House Red and Pinot Grigio. Also well known in Picton is Barley Days Brewery — an ode to the area’s barley history. For those who prefer spirits, check out 66 Gilead Distillery. The tasting room is in the historic Cooper-Norton House and they specialize in whiskey and gin. The County was once known as the “Garden Capital of Ontario,” with a rich history of growing apples. In 1911, it’s estimated that there were 10,407 acres of apple orchards with nearly half a million apple trees. It’s no wonder that cider

Mother Nature

Prince Edward County is a nature lover’s paradise, known for its abundance of wildlife and unique natural features. Perhaps the best known is Sandbanks Provincial Park. It features the largest baymouth bar in the world. Visitors can camp, hike or enjoy the beach. North Beach Provincial Park is quieter than Sandbanks and features about 3,937 feet of sandy beach on Lake Ontario and another 2,624 feet of beach on North Bay. Part of the Macaulay Mountain Conservation area is Birdhouse City. In 1978, Doug Harnes, a former superintendent with Prince Edward Conservation (now Quinte Conservation), created a birdhouse replica of the Massassauga Park Hotel. It turned out so well he decided to create more. Various groups got into the act and Birdhouse City was born. There are about 100 birdhouses faithfully maintained by volunteers. Most are replicas of local buildings, including Picton Fairground’s famous Crystal Palace, which is a scaled-down version of the Crystal Palace in London. Long considered the most mysterious of Prince Edward County’s unique natural features is Lake on the Mountain. The Mohawks called it O-no-ke-no-ke, meaning “Lake of the Gods” (the gods being the Three Sisters representing corn, beans and squash — the staples to the area’s agricultural history). Even though there is no visible source of water, the lake levels remain constant. The seemingly bottomless body of water is in fact 121 feet deep and is fed by underground springs. The lake’s origins are still debated, including being formed by a meteorite or the crater of an ancient volcano. Visitors to the Lake on the Mountain can have a meal at The Inn Restaurant or the Miller House Café. Enjoy a pint of one of their beers, brewed on-site and available only at the two restaurants. If you want to take in more of The County’s spectacular nature, walk, run or bike on the Millennium Trail. The former railway

was transformed into a 30-mile, multi-use trail. Millennium Trail starts in Carrying Place and winds through The County. Prince Edward County is truly a jewel of a place to visit. No matter what your interests are — wineries, fine food, art, history, fishing, diving or nature — you will find plenty to see and do in this special place. The County is a destination you’ll want to come back to over and over; one visit is definitely not enough. ★

ith 35 acres of pristine Northern Michigan terrain, the land alone at this East Jordan home is a private haven to wander and explore. But step inside the foyer of this light-filled, four-bedroom home, which realtor Pat O’Brien describes as “traditional contemporary,” and you’ll be greeted with breathtaking views of Lake Charlevoix. “This home was done right. They took full advantage of the views, and the landscaping makes an idyllic setting,” says broker’s assistant Jane Booze. “It’s a really unique, very high-end and well-designed home.” From the arched windows in the great room that fill the entire home with natural light, to the deck overlooking the lake, the 5,700-square-foot home tastefully accents the nature outside its walls. The two-story, double-sided stone fireplace adds a “wow factor” to the heart of the home. The chef’s kitchen is upgraded with refrigerator and warming drawers, state-of-the-art appliances, custom cabinetry and a spacious island with prep sink. “The kitchen has all the bells and whistles, including lighted cabinets and in-floor heat,” says O’Brien.

LAKELANDBOATING.COM

Off the kitchen, the eat-in dining area is surrounded by a wall of windows. The master features a large ensuite with custom built-in vanity and sliding doors that lead outside. Footpaths wind through the 35 acres, passing small creeks, underlit landscaping and a spacious 64- by 32-foot pole barn with more than enough room to store water toys, boats and fishing gear. “It has great privacy,” O’Brien says. “It really lends itself to being able to do whatever you want to do in Northern Michigan: Hunt, ski, fish, relax and enjoy sunsets.” Down by the lake, 235 feet of sandy beach stretches along the calm waters of Lake Charlevoix’s South Arm. The dock out front offers limitless possibilities to fit boats big and small, and its ideal location is just minutes to nearby destinations of Boyne City, Charlevoix, Traverse City and Petoskey — by land and by boat. “Lake Charlevoix is an absolutely phenomenal inland lake,” Booze says. “You can get from the Great Lakes to anywhere in the world through the Pine River Channel, so this is a great spot for boaters.” ★

rish Boat Shop has been part of Michigan’s boating scene since 1961, when Dave Irish opened the first location in Harbor Springs. “It’s family owned and operated,” says Colin Texter, Irish’s marketing and sales coordinator. “I’m the third generation now.” Only one decade after it opened, the Irish Boat Shop expanded to a quiet location just outside of downtown Charlevoix, Michigan, into what was previously a sugar beet factory. “We seized the opportunity to get a foothold in Charlevoix, and it’s been running strong since,” Texter says. It seems they stumbled upon the perfect spot. The Irish Boat Shop’s location in Charlevoix consists of two marinas offering 185 slips, separated by the town’s popular Ferry Beach. Texter says the beach draws an especially large crowd during the Boat Shop’s Aquapalooza — a daylong in-water (and on-land) celebration with live music on the beach. Boaters can take advantage of the full-service department, which offers fiberglass and woodwork, paint jobs, riggers for sailboats, electronic installations and certified mechanics. Irish is known for their complete boat restorations, with

LAKELANDBOATING.COM

the ability to fully rebuild the interior of a boat. They are also a dealer for Boston Whaler, Sealegs, Sea Ray and Zodiac, and are the Authorized Hinckley Service Center for the Great Lakes region. Irish Boat Shop has two travel lifts at the Charlevoix location capable of handling boats up to 70 feet and 55 tons. Boaters can choose from indoor cold or heated storage, or outdoor mast-up storage. There are also six additional heated and cold storage buildings located 1 mile away. One of Irish’s most notable features is Marina Guard, a ground fault protection system connected to each pedestal. The system alerts Irish Boat Shop if it senses electric current leaking into the water; this protects against electric shock drowning (ESD). The marina, which uses all floating docks, also offers Wi-Fi, bathrooms with showers, water, electricity and on-site parking for customers. At the end of the day, boaters can take a leisurely half-mile stroll to downtown Charlevoix, or rent bicycles from the marina for a quicker trip. For those who would rather stay close, Kelsey’s Lakeside Grille is conveniently across the street. ★

CLASSIC CRAFTS by Kate Bush

Zita Anne We purchased Zita Anne, our 36-foot Stephens Sedan Cruiser, about 16 years ago and did a full restoration. We found the boat on the West Coast, where she spent most of her life on Lake Tahoe. Gary Malone Sr. and Jr. did the renovation over a two-year period. She was repowered and the hull was redone just prior to our purchase. We stripped and refinished all her bright work, painted the bottom and hull sides, and added all new plumbing, wiring, electronics, a new galley and interior soft goods. She also had painted floors when we got her, so we replaced the floors with teak and holley with a high-gloss finish. She is now totally restored and needs nothing. I am fortunate that she is always inside the boathouse unless she’s in use. I can lift her up to do any necessary ADD YOUR BOAT
