Cruising with Canines (and Felines, too!)

FROM THE HELM by Bing O’Meara

Spring Cleaning

JUNE 2015 | VOLUME LXIX, NO. 6

Lakeland preps for move to new editorial office.

M

y wife, Linda, and I always cruised with our dog, Casey. She was a Golden Retriever and the perfect companion on board. Unlike human companions, she never touched my expensive booze or wanted to take the helm. When she had to go, she would let us know with a soft whimper. Casey was the perfect guest, and then she morphed into a perfect family member. She didn’t bore me with idle conversation, cause me to worry with complaints or question my judgment. She was just there, assuring me that she felt she was in good hands. Casey passed away at 12 years old. It was difficult for me and Linda, and we think of her often. The only trouble with having dogs is that they don’t live long enough. Lakeland’s editor-at-large Heather Steinberger wrote a fabulous story this month (p. 40) that shares with readers everything anyone’s ever wanted (and needed) to know about cruising with pets. You’ll get helpful tips on how to “boat-break” your furry family members and must-have items Bing enjoyed trying on Chicago Police to keep aboard while cruising with your canine and feline crew. Officer Luis Laurenzana’s gear when In addition to taking the new Formula 330 CBR (p. 34) out he came to pick up furniture at the for a test-drive, frequent Lakeland contributor Alan Wendt has Dearborn Street office. done a fine job describing his recent charter trip with Southwest Florida Yacht Charters (p. 44). His adventure aboard a 50-foot Carver took him down Florida’s coast to Captiva Island, where he explored stops along the west coast of Florida including South Seas Island Resort, Pink Shell Resort & Marina and Ft. Myers Beach. Florida charters allow for a vacation to boating paradise without the hassle of passports. Wendt reminds us that life today is lived at warp speed. We should slow down and build memories away from the madness and responsibilities of daily life. I think you’ll enjoy this month’s Port of Call on Michigan City, Indiana (p. 54). To me, Michigan City offers a slice of Americana. As a kid, I vowed never to bypass a Dairy Queen when finally I got my driver’s license. I have, for the most part, upheld that promise, and that’s how I know Michigan City has one on historic Franklin Street. Read up on the city’s thriving lakeside industry, famous outlet shopping, and its renowned fishing competitions and powerboat races. After more than 12 years in our loft located in the Donahue Building Annex in Chicago’s historic Printer’s Row neighborhood, we’re moving the company’s editorial offices to the near suburbs of Evanston, Illinois at the end of April. As I write this, we’re in the process of packing everything up (selling furniture on Craigslist, including some items to a Chicago Police officer), gathering years of magazines and memories, and moving north to start Lakeland Boating’s next chapter. Unfortunately, we just received sad news as we prepare to go to press with this issue. Greg Krueger, president of Jefferson Beach Yacht Sales headquartered in St. Clair Shores, Michigan, passed away. Our heartfelt condolences to his family. Please look for our tribute to Greg in the July issue. By the time you receive this issue, let’s hope the weather has warmed. See you on the water!

History’s Mystery… Solved? I wanted to offer a thought that might help solve the mystery of the 19th century Canal Boats found in Lake Ontario (March 2015 issue, p. 10). I recently read a book on the political history of building the Trent-Severn Canal. The book is called “A Respectable Ditch,” which I purchased at Peterborough Lift Lock. I’m drawing from memory here, but in the book there were two canal barges that sank during a storm on Lake Ontario. I believe it was in the mid- to late-1800s. These barges, if I recall correctly, were carrying stone suitable for lock construction on the Trent-Severn Canal. Both barges sank on Lake Ontario while being towed during a storm. At the time, I believe they were working on the Trent between Hastings and Trenton. Not sure if these are the same barges, but there may be something to this… Love the magazine! —Jim Nicholson, Hamilton, Ontario

Marine Industry Loses Visionary Leader

Founder and CEO of Sea Tow, Captain Joseph Frohnhoefer, Jr., died March 24, at the age of 71, after a brief battle with cancer. “Capt. Joe,” as he was known, leaves a lasting impact on the marine industry and on the international maritime industry as a whole. In addition to running Sea Tow with the help of his wife of 46 years, Georgia,

daughter Kristen, and son Joseph III, Capt. Joe was a volunteer EMT in his local community on Long Island, New York’s North Fork. In 1983, Capt. Joe founded Sea Tow Services International Inc., the nation’s first on-water marine assistance provider. In lieu of flowers, the Frohnhoefer family asks that donations be made to the Southold, New York Fire Department or Sea Tow Foundation.

During a routine patrol, the aircrew of U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City, Michigan, captured a rare discovery: Crystal-clear aerial images of Lake Michigan shipwrecks. As the ice finally melted near Northern Michigan, these shipwrecks, which are usually obscured by the water’s murky surface, wind and waves, were clearly revealed. The photos were taken near Sleeping Bear Point, northeast along the shoreline of Leland, Michigan. These vessels date back to the mid-19th and early 20th centuries and are part of the Manitou Passage Underwater Preserve. Among the shipwrecks photographed were the 121-foot James McBride, a cargo ship that ran aground during a storm on October 19, 1857; and Rising Sun, a 133-foot wooden steamer that became stranded near Pyramid Point in 1917. Kettle Creek Marina Turns 30

Thirty summers ago, Fiona Nisbet and John Jackson had a vision for transforming a rundown marina into a welcoming boating destination in the heart of the fishing village of Port Stanley, Ontario. “Our goal was to have the friendliest little marina on Lake Erie,” says Nisbet. “We can’t compete with the big guys with their host of marine services, so instead we offer a relaxing private oasis of landscaped grounds, complimentary propane grills, and big Muskoka chairs for watching sailboats drift by on the river. A new putting green has proved very popular while our evening campfire is always great for boaters swapping tall tales and ghosts stories.” Recent upgrades to the marina include new restrooms and showers and a main floor office selling marina souvenirs. Throughout the summer, Kettle Creek will host a cake and champagne gathering on the 30th of each month. “We want to show appreciation for the years of support from our local and American boaters,” Jackson says. Algonac, Michigan “The Venice of Michigan” is the birthplace of modern boating.

W

ith prime real estate on the St. Clair River, settled on the largest freshwater delta in the nation connecting Lake Erie and Lake Huron, the city of Algonac, Michigan has been endowed with the nickname “The Venice of Michigan,” as well as “The Pickerel Capital of the World.” Whatever you call Algonac, it just so happens that the city is the birthplace of modern boating as we know it, thanks to the efforts of two young men: Christopher Columbus Smith and Garfield “Gar” Wood.

Home to powerboat history Some say that Christopher Columbus Smith was to Algonac what Henry Ford was to Detroit. Right along the Algonac shore Smith erected his Chris-Craft manufacturing plant in 1884, pumping out powerboats on a production line, much like Ford was manufacturing automobiles in Detroit. In doing so, Smith made recreational boating affordable to the masses. “Gar” Wood, also knows as the “Silver Fox of Algonac,” was probably the most famous powerboat racer in the world. He held the world waterspeed record on several occasions and was the first man to travel more than 100 mph on the water.

Algonac Harbour Club Turns 30 Today, the Chris-Craft factory is home to the full-service Algonac Harbour Club, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary as one of the largest marinas in Southeast

Michigan. Owner Pete Beauregard Sr. purchased the factory in 1984 and developed it into a 380-square-foot marina with 65 transient slips, keeping two of the original Chris-Craft buildings on site. “We don’t say we own the site; we say that we are caretakers of a very historic place in boating history,” Beauregard says. The converted factory is now the deep-water Algonac Harbour Club, boasting amenities including a full-service gas and diesel dock, pump-out facilities, satellite TV, water and telephone hookup at every well, laundry facilities, indoor parking, and 24-hour security. Other amenities include restaurant and lounge, ship’s store, basketball courts, kiddie and adult pools, and barbeque and picnic areas. Beauregard’s had his share of experience in the boating industry, serving as one of the first Chris-Craft dealers and founding Algonac’s first Chris-Craft boat dealer, Colony Marine, in 1958 at the age of 21. The thriving dealership now offers a complete line of Sea Ray, Meridian, Boston Whaler, Crest Pontoon, Princecraft and Chris-Craft boats, including pre-owned and brokerage vessels. “Colony Marine is now run by my son and daughter, so that business, along with Algonac Harbour Club, allows us to give close to 60 years of experience to the boaters,” Beauregard says. “We know what boaters want when they come here, and we know what their needs are.”

Explore local culture Algonac also is home to Algonac State Park. With 1,500 acres and a half-mile of St. Clair River frontage, it’s one of the most attended parks in the state. The park contains

rare habitats, lake plain prairies and oak savannas. A major attraction is watching the freighters motor in from around the world as they expertly navigate the river. Stroll the 1,800 feet of boardwalk in downtown Algonac and peruse the charming local shops. If you’re looking to explore some of the city’s tremendous maritime history, visit the Algonac-Clay Historical Museum, which displays a 1949 Chris-Craft, antique outboard motors, and a plethora of maritime pictures and model boats.

Wine and dine Algonac plays host to several large-scale annual events, including the Annual Pickerel Tournament, the Algonac Rotary Art Fair, and waterfront concerts in the park. It also is a just a short boat ride to several popular Lake St. Clair summer events, including the Boating and Outdoor Festival and the family-friendly Aquapalooza. Another prominent event in Algonac each summer is the Antique Classic Boat Society’s Annual Boat Show at the Algonac Harbour Club. “It’s one of the largest in the state,” Beauregard says. “The show’s theme is ‘Where it all began,’ because all the old antique Chris-Crafts return to the factory where it all began.” For small-town atmosphere with a substantial boating narrative, Algonac is a perfect stopover on the St. Clair River, no matter your final destination. “There’s great historic value in being able to come here by boat and say, ‘Gee whiz, I may not have been on this boat if these guys from Algonac didn’t decide to put an engine on a wooden boat,’” Beauregard says. ★

DON’T HESITATE TO RENOVATE by Capt. Frank Lanier

Thrill of the Grill Before you throw those shrimps on the barbie, check out these BBQ safety tips. here’s nothing more welcome after a great day out on the water than the sight of a lit grill and the mouthwatering aroma of your favorite foods wafting through the evening air. Because grills are located above decks, boaters tend to treat them with a more cavalier attitude when it comes to safety. Bad idea. According to the Insurance Information Institute, however, barbecues result in more than 2,000 fires, 300-plus grill-related injuries, and at least three deaths annually. Let’s take a look at how you can keep the “lord of the grill/king of the coals” from becoming a barbecue statistic.

The two primary types of grills found aboard boats are those that use either charcoal or liquid propane gas (LPG). We’ll discuss safety tips for each separately in a bit, but first let’s look at some general, commonsense tips that can be applied when using any grill. 1. Read the owner’s manual. As with any piece of new or unfamiliar equipment, the first step is reading the owner’s manual. There you’ll find specifics on assembly, use and tips for safe operation. Still have unanswered questions? Don’t be shy — give the manufacturer a call to clarify. (Here’s a tip: Write the customer service phone number on the front page of your manual for easy reference). 2. Always grill above decks in the open. Barbecue grills are designed for use above decks, in a well-ventilated area. Never barbecue down below in the galley or inside an enclosed area, such as a cockpit with full canvas curtains in place. In both cases, carbon monoxide may accumulate with lethal results. 3. Mount your grill. Ensure your grill is firmly mounted in place and is stable. Never use portable, camping-type grills, which easily can slide around or tip over. Grills also should be mounted where people and pets can’t accidentally come in contact with them. Never try to move a hot grill, and allow the grill to cool completely before trying to relocate or stow it. 4. Keep it under control. Never leave a grill unattended during use and always keep some method of fire control nearby. Options include a portable fire extinguisher, fire bucket (with a lanyard long enough to reach the water), fire

LAKELANDBOATING.COM

blanket, etc. A spritzer bottle of water can help with minor flare-ups, but remove food from the grill first, if possible. Cleaning your grill regularly by removing grease and fat buildup also will reduce the chances of fire. 5. Use proper grilling utensils. Use of long-handled barbecue utensils (tongs, forks, etc.) will help reduce burns due to pops and splatters. 6. Wear grill-safe clothes. No thongs, Speedos, or “au natural” grilling, please. On the flip side, avoid baggy, frilly clothing and loose, billowing shirts or bikini wraps that easily can catch fire.

Charcoal grill safety tips 1. If you use starter fluid, opt for charcoal starter fluid only (no gas from the dingy jerry can, please). Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire once it’s started. Charcoal chimney starters also allow you to start charcoal using newspapers, etc., without the need for starter fluid. 2. When you are finished grilling, let coals cool completely before disposal.

LPG grill safety tips 1. Most boat grills use small (16.4 -ounce), disposable LPG cylinders. 2. Always inspect these for signs of corrosion, dents, gouges or other external damage before use. If any problems are found, dispose of properly and replace with another cylinder. 3. The grill must be properly mounted outside in a well-ventilated area before connecting the cylinder. 4. Always disconnect and remove the LPG cylinder after use. If you store your grill below decks, inside a cockpit locker, etc., always remove the LPG bottle before stowing. LPG bottles must be stored above decks in a well-ventilated area, where escaping vapors only can flow overboard. They also must be protected from weather and mechanical damage. Possible options include a PVC tube holder or a non-corrosive bag properly mounted to the stern railing (well away from the grill, of course). 5. Never lean over the grill when lighting (or cooking, for that matter) and always keep the lid open to prevent flare-ups. ★

Performing a Williamson Turn using a Garmin autopilot.

Cool Runnings Tips for selecting the right autopilot for your boat.

Following a GPS route on a Garmin autopilot control head.

hether your summer cruising plans include weeklong adventures or simply making runs out to your favorite weekend fishing grounds, an autopilot will almost certainly make your time on the water that much more enjoyable. In today’s market, a wide variety of pilots are available that employ cool, new technology. The good news is that selecting the right one for your boat isn’t as complicated as you might think. The information that follows should help steer you in the right direction (pun intended, of course).

Common mistakes When you first examine the vast array of autopilot options available in the marketplace, it can seem a bit overwhelming. But no need to panic; knowing some specifics about your boat and its steering system can significantly help you whittle down the list of choices. Understanding your hull type and its displacement, along with the type and size of your steering system, will ensure a properly sized pilot. It’s important to take care that you don’t under-size your autopilot. Keep in mind that specs such as displacement are usually given as a dry weight — meaning that when loaded for cruising or a long weekend, you can expect the boat’s displacement to increase upwards of 20 percent or more. Another common cause of under-sizing an autopilot results when the specs of your boat are close to the upper limit of the manufacturer’s specs. If that’s the case, always size up on your autopilot. Doing so will ensure better performance in heavy seas. The smallest autopilot will keep a large vessel on course in calm conditions, but when the seas get rough, it’s a completely different story.

Autopilots can be broken down into two main categories: Above or below deck. Above deck systems, such as wheel pilots or tiller pilots, serve well for smaller, mechanically steered sailboats and smaller coastal cruising boats up to approximately 40 feet. If you’re relying on a tiller or wheel pilot for long-range cruising, it’s recommended that you have a second pilot — or a list of spares — with you on board, as these pilots generally are not as robust as their larger, below-deck brethren. Below deck systems are made up of several separate components and are good for use on a wide range of powerboats and larger sailboats.

LAKELANDBOATING.COM

Autopilot components include control heads, remotes, core packs made up of a course computer (the brains of the system), a rate compass or fluxgate compass (heading sensor), and possibly a rudder reference indicator. Technology in autopilots has advanced significantly in recent years, and some new products — such as those from Raymarine, Garmin and Navico — combine, improve or eliminate certain components like rudder reference indicators, a common, long-term failure item in most autopilot systems.

All about the drives The other important component to any autopilot is the drive. There are several types available. One is a hydraulic pump, and it’s primarily used for boats with hydraulic steering, which includes most powerboats — everything from smaller outboard craft to large motoryachts. Linear drives are commonly used on larger, mechanically steered vessels, such as cruising sailboats, and operate by directly connecting to the tiller arm or steering quadrant below decks. Hybrid hydraulic linear drives also are available. These drives take advantage of hydraulics rather than electrical motors to move the linear drive. Rotary drives are designed for chain and cable steering systems such as those from Edson and Whitlock and may require a specific sprocket to fit the vessel. There are even small drives that take the place of cable-steered helms in small powerboats, such as the new outboard pilots from Navico. Remember that larger drives will probably require a larger core pack, resulting in a higher cost, but more effective pilot. In order to have an autopilot that works efficiently and steers your boat well in all conditions, it’s important not to try and “get by” with a smaller, less expensive system. Sizing the pilot correctly will save money and frustration in the long run — and you won’t end up going in circles (again, pun intended). ★

CORKE BOARD by Mark Corke

Juices Flowing Get the scoop on proper battery maintenance.

B

atteries tend to be an afterthought aboard a boat — until we need them, that is, and by then it’s usually too late. At that point, it’s probably time for the tow boat. Allow your batteries to go flat, and you’re literally dead in the water. Batteries are expensive equipment, so it pays to look after them. In many cases, batteries prematurely fail and require replacement because they’re not correctly maintained. What follows are some handy tips for battery TLC, in the hopes of keeping yours running well for the duration of its/their expected life cycle.

PHOTOS BY MARK CORKE

Strain and drain In order to take proper care of your batteries, it’s helpful to think about how they’re used aboard a boat. In a car, for example, the battery fulfills one function: To start the engine. With the car engine running, the alternator takes over and powers all electrical circuits until the engine stops. On a boat, however, batteries work differently. Sure, they still start the engines; but when we finally get to that picnic spot or we drop anchor in a quiet cove somewhere, they also have to supply all the boat’s electrical needs until we start the engine again. This puts quite a strain on the battery bank. Most boats will have at least two batteries, one of which is typically reserved for starting the engine, and the other for house loads, such as running the lights, stereo, refrigerator, etc. Batteries that are routinely undercharged will fail prematurely; conversely, it’s also possible to overcharge batteries, again leading to their swift demise. One of the best ways to keep batteries in top condition is to connect up a battery charger when the boat is left unattended. If the vessel is docked in a slip or where power is available, then this is easy. Don’t be tempted to use an automotive battery charger, however, as these may be fine for short-term use, but will overcharge batteries if left connected for long periods. More appropriate is a proper marine battery charger, which is designed to be left permanently connected to your boat’s batteries and will maintain them in tip-top condition. On a boat that’s being trailered, it might be worth considering fitting a marine battery charger that can be plugged in when the boat is stored for longer periods, as this will ensure that the battery remains topped off and will perform well the next time you take the boat out. If plugging in the boat isn’t an option, then other methods

are worth considering, including installing a wind generator or solar panel. Another possibility is removing the battery from time to time, taking it home and giving it a proper charge before taking it back next time you visit the boat.

Battery ABCs It’s worth mentioning that there are three types of batteries. The first is what’s known as lead acid wet cell, and these are the least expensive and also the most common. The second are gel batteries, which use a jelly-like substance in place of a liquid electrolyte. The third type is called AGM (absorbed glass mat), which gets its name from the acid that’s held in a fiberglass mat between the cell plates. Both gel and AGM batteries are pretty much maintenance free and do not require topping off cells, as is the case with traditional lead acid batteries. However, this convenience comes at a price: A good AGM often costs up to three times that of more traditional types. On boats that have two or more batteries in a bank, it makes sense to change these in pairs, even if one battery still appears to be in good, working condition. As batteries age, their ability to accept a charge changes, and they lose some of their potential to supply the full rated output. If a new battery is added into the mix, the older battery will tend to drag down the newer battery, and you could find yourself changing it sooner than you’d planned.

A neat and tidy example of batteries that were installed properly. The connections are well-made and the wooden straps prevent the batteries from shifting while underway.

Battery maintenance Batteries should be kept clean and dry. Also, it’s a U.S. Coast Guard requirement that batteries must be properly restrained; they can’t come loose when the weather gets rough. Electrical connections to the terminal posts should be well made and secure, with no corrosion. Wet cell batteries need to have the electrolyte regularly checked. It should sit just above the top of the plates when you look into the battery. Top off with distilled water if levels are low and always exercise caution. Remove jewelry such as watches and metal bracelets that could cause an electrical short, and wear goggles or other eye protection to avoid splashing acid. Batteries give off hydrogen as they charge, so make sure all naked flames are extinguished. ★

ASK THE EXPERT by Elizabeth Altick

Air Apparent Dometic’s Ed Todd helps boaters choose the most cost-effective and efficient air conditioner. LB: How does a boat owner choose the right air conditioner for his or her boat?

Todd: The first and most important thing is to determine the BTU (British Thermal Unit) load on the boat. That indicates what capacity will be needed to cool the vessel. (The manufacturer or your local marine dealer can assist you.)

2000 N. Andrews Ave. Pompano Beach, FL 33069 954-973-2477 DOMETIC.COM

Todd: Once we determine the BTU load, we then know what size unit or units are needed to keep the boat cool and comfortable. Then, once we know the size of the system, we’ll know how much power (amps) will be required to operate the air conditioner. LB: Don’t air conditioners take up a lot of valuable space?

Todd: Well, all space on a boat is valuable. So it’s always a bit of a trade-off. The question is: What space are you willing to give up and thus use this area for the air conditioning system? Fortunately, our systems are the most compact and efficient available on the market today. LB: Won’t an air conditioner be noisy?

Todd: As with all mechanical devices, our air conditioning units will generate various noise patterns. We’ve spent a great deal of engineering focusing on reducing noise and vibration to a point where we now have one of the quietest units available. We use patented sound covers that are integrated into the chassis. We also have vibration isolators incorporated into the pan assembly. In addition, we use proprietary, split-capacitor fan motors to further reduce motor hum.

LB: How can boaters keep cool without draining a boat’s power?

Todd: The best way to minimize power consumption is to use windshield covers when the boat is moored in a morning or afternoon sun and keep the doors and windows closed tightly during the heat of the day. Furthermore, closing the hullside window treatments during the day helps reduce heat gain in the living areas.

LAKELANDBOATING.COM

LB: Is there such a thing as an air conditioner and heater in one HVAC unit?

Todd: In today’s market, the majority of all marine air conditioning units come with a reversing valve built right into the machine. It changes the flow of the refrigerant to produce a significant amount of heat for a small increase in amp draw. This device is far more efficient than attempting to provide heat with resistant heat strips. LB: Can AC be installed as a DIY project?

Todd: We offer a number of DIY packages that are available at many marine stores around the country. LB: Is additional plumbing and ductwork necessary?

Todd: Yes, it is. Integrating correctly sized and routed ducting into the system ensures that cool air is delivered to the desired areas of the boat. This eliminates hot spots and provides a more uniform overall interior temperature. We use water-cooled condensers that are very efficient. They are designed to last many years in a marine environment versus the standard air-cooled condensers that are found in residential air conditioning. LB: How much do AC systems typically cost?

Todd: Retail price for DIY kits range from $2,500 to $3,600. ★

escribed as a new breed of express yacht, Hinckley’s classically styled Talaria 43 offers a captivating blend of classical elegance with thoughtful design and modern technology. The most obvious bit of tech is its unique, retractable aft enclosure. Push a button and three panes of glass — one each in the sidewall bulkheads plus a third in the centerline door — silently retract out of sight, instantly creating an open, express-style salon. Slide the door base into its portside bulkhead and you have a wide-open boat, with the aft cockpit seamlessly connected with the main salon to form a single, continuous entertaining area. Talk about slick. The aft cockpit features a pair of L-shaped settees with storage in their bases, while a wet bar with sink and refrigerator sits just forward of the starboard settee. An optional, retractable Bimini top extends from the hardtop to protect almost three-quarters of the aft deck. Inside the salon, inward-facing, L-shaped settees surround a varnished teak table. The galley is positioned forward to port,

opposite the helm. Large windows all around open electronically, as do power overhead hatches to let even more fresh air inside. Look up and you’ll spot a 32-inch LED TV nestled in the salon ceiling, which flips down to entertain guests inside or out. Below decks, the master stateroom in the bow offers a full queen bed. There’s a comfortable guest cabin with twin berths to starboard and a full head with shower stall to port. “The T43 is really the ideal boat for the way most Great Lakes boaters spend time out on the water,” says Marty Letts of Hinckley Yachts. “First, the main salon and galley areas open directly into the massive cockpit and all on the same level, which is great for entertaining. Second, with two cabins and great storage the T43 is a wonderful cruising boat built with incredible strength and seaworthiness. Few boats have both these traits and none do both as well as the T43.” Standard power is twin Cummins QSB 550 hp, 6.7L common rail diesels with Hamilton 322 jet drives, or twin 435-horsepower Volvo Penta IPS 600 diesels with pod drives available. ★

owriders do a lot of things really, really well. So it makes sense that a bigger bowrider could do even more things really, really well. That’s not just a theory — that’s the rational behind Regal’s new 2800 BR. “With seating for 14 and a cockpit that can entertain in a variety of different ways, the 2800 has yacht-like capabilities traditionally not available in a 28-foot bowrider,” says Jacob Kuck, product specialist at Regal Boats. “With its available bow thruster and power helm seat, the 2800 offers more convenience than any other boat in its class.” Befitting a 28-foot boat with a 9-foot beam, the spacious bow offers comfy seating for several adults, with ample storage in the seat bases. An enclosed, full-sized head compartment features dark cherry cabinetry, a glass vessel sink and far more space than you would expect. The 2800 BR’s helm deserves special mention with its RegalVue digital display that presents GPS, engine information, speed and stereo controls in one, clean space. Trim tabs are standard, and a bow thruster is a worthwhile option.

The standard double-wide companion seat with bolster is a nice touch, along with the abundance of stainless steel drink holders, LED courtesy lights, Bluetooth-enabled stereo and stainless handrails. Two insulated, built-in coolers help keep everyone hydrated, while the transom walk-through makes boarding easier and keeps upholstery clean. The standard Bimini top will shade the cockpit on a warm day, while Regal’s Power Tower makes a great spot to mount speakers or wakeboards. Out back, an available power swim platform that gently submerges at the push of a button sets this boat apart. “The Power Platform is just awesome,” says Rich Gotlund of Basa’s Marine in Bolingbrook, Illinois. “When you’re anchored, you can lower the platform, turn on the music and just hang out there, keeping cool in the water and enjoying the whole experience.” Built on Regal’s FasTrac stepped hull, the 2800 BR achieves planing times of just 4 seconds and top speeds in excess of 50 mph with a single, 380-horsepower V8 sterndrive. That’s impressive performance for a 6,500-pound boat. ★

uilt in Finland for use in the Baltic Sea, Sargo boats have forged a worldwide reputation as versatile, adaptable boats capable of handling big water. Little wonder they’re catching on in the Great Lakes region. “Boaters in northern Finland have very similar demands to boaters on the Great Lakes,” says Sargo USA’s Carl Skarne. “Finnish boaters also have big water, short summers and cool weather when they go out early and late in the season. The 31 has the size, the ability to handle big water and the versatility to make it a true three-season boat, as if it were designed specifically for the Great Lakes.” With its large flaring bow and spacious pilothouse offering 360-degree views, the Sargo 31 truly is built for cruising in comfort. Large sliding doors on each side of the pilothouse allow easy, quick access to the single-level, walk-around decks and mid-ship cleats while docking, or can be left open to allow the fresh air to pour in on beautiful summer days. Overhead, a huge sunroof opens the salon to the sky. The galley, located on the main deck, is compact, but fully

Below, both front and mid cabins sleep two and offer working portholes that provide plenty of natural light and fresh air. You’ll find ample storage space and LED lighting throughout, plus an electric head. Because the point of boating is to enjoy the outdoors, the rear cockpit gets special treatment with comfortable seating, an enormous rear swim platform accessed through a centerline gate, and an extended fiberglass canopy over the cockpit that provides added protection from sun or rain. Generous stainless steel railings add an extra measure of security. The Sargo 31’s modern, stylish helm is perfectly laid out and well equipped, with a standard bow thruster, Garmin 8012 chartplotter and automatic trim tabs. Buyers have a choice of Volvo Penta or Yanmar power. With its 5-ton displacement and open ocean hull, the Sargo 31 is built to eat up big water, yet still offer economical cruising and a top speed up to 40 knots. H

ontoon boats are built for family fun, and engineers at Tahoe Pontoons didn’t fool around when it came to designing the LTZ Rear Lounge. With its versatile layout and thoughtful appointments, this is one pontoon that’s made for fun afloat. “The Deco 4 wall design and tasteful accents give the boat a stylish, upscale appearance at an affordable price,” says Tahoe Pontoons’ Greg Knight. “The two extra-wide, rear-facing sun lounge benches are the perfect place to dry off after a swim.” Tahoe Pontoons’ interior upholstery features thick Matrix 50 soft-touch vinyl on full suspension seating that never bottoms out. All seating uses aluminum frames with flow-through dry ventilation and seat base cladding. There are no wood or plastic components, so Tahoe Pontoons warranties its seats for life. The helm is an elegant fiberglass console that Tahoe Pontoons calls its Cadet driver’s stand. Its round, torpedo gauges with chrome bezels and retro look suggest a 1960s muscle car and really make the LTZ a lot of fun to drive. A powerful Millenia Bluetooth stereo system delivers great sound, while tilt steering, a courtesy light and 12-volt receptacle complete the dash.

“The Tahoe Pontoons LTZ Rear Lounge really is a hybrid of sorts, as it’s built for both sunbathers and cruisers,” says Matt Mrozinski of Lake Michigan Yacht Sales in Bay Harbor, Michigan. “Apart from the two rear-facing chaise lounges in the stern, you also have two large bench seats for cruising at the bow.” Between those bow loungers is a receiver for a pedestalmount, removable table. Underfoot, plush marine carpeting provides a comfortable, non-slip surface. Overhead, a 10-foot Bimini top provides protection from the mid-day sun. The extended rear deck — finished in a sensible marine vinyl — includes a folding boarding ladder to starboard for easy access to and from the water. The standard boat comes with twin, 25-inch pontoons and is rated to handle outboards up to 125 horsepower. Adding the high performance Wave Glider (WG) package swaps those out for three, 23-inch pontoons that deliver improved speed and handling, plus the ability to handle large V6 outboards up to 225 horsepower. ★

hen I was a kid just getting into sailing, I dreamed of navigating around the world in a Tartan 27. The lines of this keen — but stout — 27-footer were drawn in 1960 by famed yacht design firm Sparkman & Stephens. The Tartan 27 also was a wildly popular sailboat for a company that, until then, had primarily been a builder of small racing dinghies, such as Thistles and International 14s. The 27 was, for all intents and purposes, the boat that put the Tartan name on the sailboat-builder map. Though not officially known as Tartan Marine until 1974, the Ohio-based boatbuilding company behind the Tartan name introduced many successful sailboat designs after that first 27, including such iconic designs as the Tartan 30 and 34. Other popular models would follow, including the Tartan Ten, Tartan 37 and one of my favorites, the Tartan 41. The company developed a well-deserved reputation not just for excellent craftsmanship and quality, but also for building fast, seaworthy and capable sailboats.

string of very bullish years, the company was forced to scale back its operations to only a skeleton staff and hope for the best. But it was in this recession when the company saw an opportunity to expand and diversify into a segment of the boating industry that was weathering the worldwide economic storm better than most: The powerboat market. Tartan had been in discussions to purchase the Legacy powerboat brand (once part of Freedom Yachts) for years, and while acquiring another boat brand during a recession seems counterintuitive, the recession actually catalyzed making the deal a reality. Just as the Legacy purchase was being finalized, investment banker Stephen Malbasa and his wife, Stephanie — new Tartan 4300 owners — expressed an interest in buying the company. By 2010, the Malbasa’s had purchased Tartan/C&C, the Legacy powerboat molds were moved to Ohio, and the company was set in a new direction. The C&C brand was sold to USWatercraft in 2014. Tartan/C&C became Tartan Yachts and Legacy became Legacy Yachts by Tartan.

Downturn expansion

New and improved

Fast-forward to 2009. The Great Recession was in full effect, putting much of the worldwide marine industry in the crosshairs of financial trouble. Well-known builders were closing their doors at an alarming rate, while others were forced to merge with their competitors just to survive. Tartan (then Tartan/ C&C) was no different. After a

Interested in this new fossil-fueled direction Tartan took, I decided to catch up with Tim Jackett, whose first job was at Tartan Yachts in 1978, and where he went on to design many of the company’s most successful boats. Today he is the director of Legacy Yachts by Tartan, which is currently building the Legacy 32, with two more models — the Legacy 36 and 42 — in the works. It’s probably fitting that Tartan decided to launch the Legacy 32 first, as Freedom built 49 of the hulls in its

Tartans Tartan ’s Legacy

The Legacy 32 features a rich and luxurious helm deck with extraordinary handcrafted woodwork — something Tartan is famous for.

The handcrafted woodwork theme continues below, on the Legacy 32. Pictured here is the portside galley and companionway.

Legacy powerboats are built right alongside Tartan sailboats in the manufacturer’s Fairport Harbor, Ohio, factory. Here, a Legacy 32 hull is being pulled from the mold.

With 50-plus years of building premium sailing craft under its belt, Tartan diversifies its portfolio with power. By gary reich first two and a half years of production. Re-launched last year, this gorgeous Downeast express cruiser has beautiful lines, a rich interior and impressive performance, with a 25.4-knot top end and an efficient, 17.2-knot cruise when equipped with a single, 420-horsepower Cummins diesel (a 380-horsepower Cummins diesel is standard). It’s such a successful and praised design that Tartan could have simply reproduced what Freedom had originally built. But instead of simply rebuilding from the molds that it had acquired in the purchase, Tartan decided to make extensive improvements to the already capable Legacy 32. “Our design staff has reviewed and updated the entire systems layout of the 32, and we also made a mid-stream decision to re-tool the deck to provide some improved fit between components and provide proper service access to all of the major engine room components,” Jackett says. “We’ve also made changes to the helm deck area, swapping out the old fiberglass box seats in favor of ultraleather captain’s chairs. The helm deck and exterior are being finished in solid stock Sapelle, an elegant African hardwood. The interior will showcase Tartan’s renowned handcrafted woodwork.”

Designs of the future The Legacy 32 is built alongside Tartan sailboats at the company’s Fairport Harbor, Ohio, facility, only a stone’s throw (if you’ve got a good arm) from Lake Erie. Tartan’s Legacy 36 and 42 models, expected to enter production this year, also will be built here. It turns out the factory is a perfect fit for Tartan’s new powerboat line. “That was one of the strong appeals of the Legacy line: The lamination is identical to Tartan; the woodworking is vintage Tartan; and the systems acumen that has been developed in larger Tartans provides a nice crossover,” Jackett says. Inside every Legacy powerboat you’ll find a resin-infused hull, deck and stringer structures with PVC foam coring and multi-directional fiberglass cloths laminated with epoxy modified vinylester resin. All Legacy powerboats come with a standard, 15-year structural and blister warranty. While the first two Legacy 32s near completion, the company

is working feverishly on its next two models: An all-new 36-footer, and a 42-footer based on Freedom’s previous tooling. Tartan hopes to introduce the two new boats later this year. “The Legacy 36 is a collaboration between Mark Ellis, myself and the Tartan design team,” Jackett says. “The hull is Mark’s, while the exterior styling and general arrangement plan is a collaboration. So like most boats, it’s a design partnership using the skills of a group of designers and engineers. The Legacy 42 is largely the same as previously built, although there are updates to systems and the interior styling that will reflect a Tartan interior build style, as opposed to the Freedom-built Legacy 42s. Things such as solid raised panel doors, solid stock cabinet faces, plugged trim details, and solid teak cabin soles will be some of the more evident changes.”

Building for today’s boater Whom does Tartan hope will buy these classy Downeast cruisers? “We have found an interesting range of people that are drawn to the Legacy 32,” Jackett says. “One group is the sailor converting to power, and, contrary to most discussions, it’s not necessarily an older sailor moving to power. Many are younger boaters that see power as a lifestyle on the water that fits better with the time constraints of their home and professional life. There’s another group that comes from the powerboat side that simply find the efficiency and style of a Downeast cruising yacht appealing, and again there is a segment of this group that is a little older and looking to downsize, without giving up the luxury associated with a premium build,” he adds. Famous National Hockey League coach Scotty Bowman once said, “I found out that if you are going to win games, you had better be ready to adapt.” Well, when it comes to the game of survival, it seems Tartan has that adaptability down to a science. And it feels as if Jackett couldn’t be more eager for the future. “I’m excited about what the combination of Legacy and Tartan offers for the company,” Jackett says. “Until sail makes a comeback, I think it’s the combined opportunities of power and sail that will allow both Tartan and Legacy to evolve and develop in a way that offers its existing and future enthusiasts a great way to enjoy a boating lifestyle.” H

Cruising With Canines

(and Felines, too!) By HeAtHer SteinBerger

A

s the French writer Anatole France once noted, “Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened.” For so many of us, our pets are more than our best friends — they are members of our family, and we cannot imagine daily life without their warm, steadfast presence. For boaters, that means one thing. At some point, your pets are going to go cruising. Whether you’re planning a two-week summer vacation on the Great Lakes or an extended, long-dreamed-about cruising adventure on the Great Loop or through the Caribbean islands, you’ll have to prepare to accommodate your pet on board. And retired veterinarian Jerzy “George” Krzaczynski has expert, firsthand knowledge of the journey that lies ahead. Born and raised in western Poland, Krzaczynski immigrated to the United States in 1964 and earned his DVM degree from the University of Minnesota. He started sailing on Minnesota’s White Bear Lake, and once he moved to the Chicago area to practice veterinary medicine, he began sailing and racing out of Waukegan Harbor. While raising his family and building a successful vet practice, Krzaczynski sailed self-built boats, a Santana 22, a Cal 2-27 and a Beneteau 32, and he completed more than 20 Chicago-Mac races. Yet by the early 1990s, he felt restless and dissatisfied. That’s when his late wife, Leah, suggested that they go cruising — through the Great Lakes to the Atlantic coast, and then down through the Leeward and Windward islands. “She knew it was my dream,” Krzaczynski says. He and Leah sold their racing boat, put their house up for sale, and purchased a 35-foot Hallberg-Rassy ketch that they named Full Circle. One night in May, they cast off the docklines, bound for Charlevoix, Michigan. On board with them: A chocolate miniature poodle named Teak-Lah.

From Boat-Breaking to Undocumented Alien Status

“Potty training is the No. 1 concern when you take a dog cruising,” Krzaczynski says. “Dogs are stubborn. We made a box out of 2-by-4s for Teak-Lah and figured she’d go. Well, she had no part of that.” So Krzaczynski and Leah resorted to taking her ashore with the dinghy, a poor prospect when they had no choice but to make landfall on private property. Or on rocks. “On Lake Charlevoix, a guy with a shotgun showed up,” Krzaczynski remembers. “We said, come on, we’re just trying to take care of our dog; have mercy. He said he was going to call the police and have us arrested, and he chased us off the property.”

Life wasn’t much easier in the North Channel. “We’d be taking the dinghy ashore on slippery, slanting rocks and trying to get the dog out,” Krzaczynski says. “Not good.” From there to Long Island Sound, three months, 42 locks and 1,200 nautical miles later, the dog was in charge. In an article she wrote for Ensign magazine while still living aboard, Leah noted, “By the time we reached Mamaroneck, New York, where we would leave the boat for the winter, I was questioning the wisdom of keeping her with us. My fears were both for her comfort and ours.” The breakthrough came while they were on a mooring, awaiting a new transmission. The couple decided to keep Teak-Lah on board for the full two weeks, encouraging her with “piddle pads” and the longtime command to do her business, “Outside!” “Eventually we had a little piece of carpet on a lanyard, which we put on the bow,” Krzaczynski says. “She’d go on the pee pads on the carpet, and eventually she’d go right on the carpet. We could just rinse it in the ocean to clean it, and put it back.” The entire process took longer than expected, he acknowledged, but finally she did become boat-broken. That wasn’t the end of their challenges. When seas were rough, someone had to escort Teak-Lah to the bow. “We had her on two leashes, in case one would break,” Krzaczynski explains. “We’d get on the bow, and she just couldn’t go in such rough conditions. Eventually we got her to go in the cockpit if the bow wasn’t safe.” Another big challenge, Krzaczynski says, is documentation. If you’re going into a foreign territory, your pet will need all of his or her papers in order — but the animal may not be allowed on land. “In the Virgin Islands, if a dog arrives by plane and has recent documents, she can go on land,” he explains. “But if the dog arrives by boat, the documents won’t be recent, which makes her an undocumented alien, and she can’t go ashore. “That was OK for us, because we didn’t want to ruin her boat-breaking,” he continues. “But in St. Vincent, she wasn’t allowed off the boat, period. The police could shoot her on the spot. That’s the way it is in some places. So when you’re choosing a breed, the smaller the better, because the animal will be living full-time on the boat. Smaller dog, smaller exercise needs, less food, smaller [you know]. And you don’t want a hairy dog. It’ll shed, get matted, and dry very, very slowly.” Leaving the boat to travel home for a visit presents its own unique challenges. In Trinidad, for example, dogs aren’t

allowed on land no matter what. So, how do you go to the airport with your dog? “Find an agent who knows which doors to knock on,” Krzaczynski advises. “We would’ve spent weeks knocking on all the wrong doors. We got permission to transport Teak-Lah to the airport, and a government agent was with us, to make sure that’s where she was going.” The same happens in reverse… unless you happen to forget the key to your boat. “I’d left the key behind at home, so we’re all standing in the rain, the agent wants to go home, and the dog isn’t allowed on land but can’t get on the boat,” Krzaczynski recalls with a chuckle. “Fortunately, the taxi driver was a friend, and he convinced the agent to let us go home to his bed-and-breakfast for the night.”

At Sea with Man’s Best Friend

For four years, Krzaczynski and Leah sailed up and down the Lesser Antilles chain, going below the 12th parallel to Grenada or Trinidad during hurricane season. They frequently became acquainted with other cruisers with pets on board — largely due to the speed with which rumor travels in the cruising community. “As soon as people heard there was a veterinarian in the anchorage, they’d come, and all I had was toothpaste and a nail file,” Krzaczynski says with a sigh. “So the next time I was home, I packed a small case with items from my practice, even surgical instruments.” He recalled having dinghies waiting in line behind his boat, using a Plexiglas hatch as an exam table, stitching up a dog that got into a fight with a stingray, diagnosing mange in the Grenadines thanks to a homeschooled cruising child’s microscope, and even treating a man who had been hit by a boom.

George Krzaczynski and his dog, Teak-Lah (above), shared many adventures aboard his and his wife’s 35-foot sailboat, Full Circle. Krzaczynski is a trained veterinarian and offers up helpful advice and safety tips for cruising boaters looking to bring aboard furry members of the family.

“Pets are such an ice-breaker and conversation starter.”

TEAK-LAH AND CALLIE PHOTOS BY GEORGE KRZACZYNSKI

Ten-week-old Callie Lou (right), alongside veteran sailor TeakLah, gets her sea legs aboard a Catalina 42 on Lake Michigan. Within her first year, Callie would become a full-time cruising dog aboard the 42-foot Privilege catamaran Jumeaux.

“There wasn’t an MD there, so they brought him to me,” Krzaczynski says. “I never took money from my fellow cruisers. Sometimes they’d give me a loaf of fresh-baked bread or a bottle of rum.” Through it all, Teak-Lah was a dedicated companion, and as Krzaczynski notes, a constant joy. “She would dive for a tennis ball, and we taught her to bring it back up the swim ladder on her own,” he recalls. “She’d run to the bow, drop it overboard, let it float to the stern, and dive off again. Total self-entertainment. “We’d power into an anchorage, and the alarm would sound before we’d turn the key off,” he adds. “That was her signal; now we’re going swimming. She’d run to fetch the ball and be ready to go.” Krzaczynski says he and Leah would joke that Teak-Lah was their weather station. They had a sign saying, “Ears down, calm. Ears flying, windy. Dog dry, clear. Dog wet, rain. Dog gone, hurricane.” “Those were our dog days on Full Circle,” Krzaczynski says. “We had our challenges with customs, but it was worth it. Teak-Lah lived to be 16 years old. She was a good dog. The best.” Krzaczynski’s cruising life with Leah came to an end in 2000, when Leah lost her battle with cancer. But he would again find himself cruising with a dog — this time with fellow Chicagoan Wendy Winzeler, who later became his wife, and her golden retriever, Callie Lou, who is now 11 years old. The trio spent a winter together aboard their 42-foot Privilege catamaran, Jumeaux, when Callie Lou was just 6 or 7 months old. Winzeler and the puppy flew into St. Martin, where they joined George and the boat. She says the transition couldn’t have been easier. “I didn’t have to do a thing,” she says, laughing. “She took to it like a duck to water.

8 Must-have Items for Cruising With Your Pet

Harness. This applies to either a dog or a cat. An animal is less likely to slip out of a harness than a collar, and if he does go overboard, you’ll be able to retrieve him with your boat hook. Without a harness, as George Krzaczynski says, “Good luck.”

Multiple leashes. While underway, use two leashes with your pet rather than just one; leashes can break. Also make sure your pet always is clipped onto a lifeline or railing. Krzaczynski recalled a fellow cruiser who said he was on his third cat because “they keep sliding off the boom.” Yikes. Sleeping place. For a dog, this might be a dedicated blanket or doggie bed, or perhaps he’ll curl up with you in your berth. A cat might sleep with you, too, but many cruisers opt to create a special haven elsewhere. “We met some people

who were circumnavigating on a sistership of my boat,” Krzaczynski says. “They had a special shelf that was the cat’s living quarters, and it was comfortable in all conditions.” Bark collar. Krzaczynski admitted that this can be a controversial item, but he found it necessary aboard Full Circle. “Imagine you’re at anchor and have gone ashore,” he explains, “and you leave the dog outside so he can relieve himself. He will sit in the cockpit and bark. People will be unhappy about it. They will lecture you. So use the bark collar — after awhile, it doesn’t even need to be charged. The dog will know not to bark when the collar is on.” TIP: If you’re not comfortable with the electric collars, you can choose options such as

Potty area. For a cat, this will be a litter box; some cats also have been trained to use marine toilets (yes, really). For a dog, you may have to experiment with piddle pads, carpet, AstroTurf or even homemade boxes. TIP: Commit to boat-breaking. Stay on the boat as long as necessary so the dog has no other choice but to go on the boat. Otherwise, he’ll try to wait it out.

Callie Lou’s only hiccup was getting on and off the boat. As Teak-Lah did, she learned to use the boarding ladder. “It was easier than it was for Teak-Lah, because it wasn’t a straight ladder on a monohull,” Winzeler explains. “It was at more of an angle, so it only took a few days for her to learn.” Also like Teak-Lah, Callie Lou added immeasurable humor and fun to life aboard Jumeaux. Winzeler recalls one particular day in the islands when they were returning from town with the dinghy. “Each of us thought the other one had secured the painter when we got back to the boat,” Winzeler says. “I was down below, unpacking groceries, when I heard a ‘woof.’” Callie Lou had been taught never to jump off the boat, but Krzaczynski and Winzeler had focused only on the side with the ladder. Callie Lou, apparently feeling that the other side must be fair game, took matters into her own paws. “I ran up and saw the dinghy floating 300 feet behind us, and the dog was swimming after it,” Winzeler says, laughing. “And it was rough! I jumped in, but there was nothing I could do; I had a blown ACL and only one good knee. George swam out, got the painter, clipped it to Callie’s harness, and she pulled the dinghy in. She did her retriever thing! People were standing on their boats, applauding. “It was fun,” she reflects. “Pets are such an ice-breaker and conversation starter. We met people who already knew who Teak-Lah was, and Callie Lou. They add to your quality of life… they really do make life better.” ★

First-Aid Kit. The best thing to have on board for your pet? Wendy Winzeler jokes, “A veterinarian.” If you can’t have that, however, you should have a pet FirstAid kit. Kits run from approximately $30 for the ASPCA Emergency Ready Deluxe Pet First Aid Kit to more than $400 for more elaborate kits. If you want to build your own, the Human Society of the United States has an excellent checklist ATHUMANESOCIETY.ORG/ANIMALS/ RESOURCES/TIPS/PET_FIRST_AID_KIT.

and don’t forget to include a resource book like the “First Aid Companion for Cats and Dogs” by Amy D. Shojai. TIP: Ideally, you’d have two kinds of antibiotics on board,

as well as a topical antibiotic cream for skin infections. Talk to your veterinarian to see if you can arrange prescriptions in advance, but please note: It’s advisable to find a veterinarian in your chosen cruising ground who can supervise any use of medications. Your onboard supplies would be for emergencies only, in the event you cannot find a local vet or if you’re in an area where vet services are spotty.

Toys. “Tennis balls are the best toys,” Krzaczynski says. “We brought lots of them, and only lost a few.” — H.S.

Easy-to-Find Pet Food. You don’t want to have your animal accustomed to a boutique food that you won’t be able to find anywhere outside of a major U.S. city. Gradually make the switch to a more widely available food before you leave, Winzeler advises. That’s not a transition you want to make while under way, particularly if your pet has a delicate stomach.

oming from a hyper-stressed office connected to the “Internet of Things,” the notion of cruising 3 to 4 knots to our first destination sounded painfully slow. Withdrawal from this “I need it now” existence felt like a one-cup-shy caffeine headache. No Wake zones and the morning return of a lackadaisical squadron of Roseate Spoonbills to mangroves that anchor the shoreline of Pine Island Sound were part of the therapy (1). Sighting these birds is part of a boat ride to Captiva Island, located just offshore from Ft. Myers, Florida. Concerns about the number of signal bars on my iPhone were quickly replaced by the number of sandbars dotting the chartplotter of the 50-foot Carver we chartered from Southwest Florida Yachts in Cape Coral, Florida. Redundant depth finders were flashing low water alarms like a stock market bulletin moving across the bottom of CNBC. “Put down the binoculars, you-would-be ornithologist,” I muttered to myself, “lest you become a certified bird brain” by drifting out of a well-marked channel the locals refer to as the “miserable mile.” Not to be confused with Chicago’s famous Magnificent Mile, this idle zone-enforced stretch of ditch where the Caloosahatchee River meets the pastel colored Gulf of Mexico is narrow and undeveloped. You can forget about shopping. Except for Jasper’s Bait Shop (2), a whimsical, two-story, 1500-square-foot house built on a floating platform and anchored in a river cove. Boaters tie up alongside, get snacks, shrimp and snap photos of the structure that once served as wrestler Hulk Hogan’s 1993 movie set home in Thunder in Paradise. And paradise this is. Seagrape trees drape the two-lane road on both Sanibel and adjoining Captiva islands. A few more years of recovery following Hurricane Charley, and these fruit-bearing plants will once again create a sun dappled overhead canopy along the shoreline past the J.N. Ding Darling Natural Wildlife Refuge known for its abundant bird life. As much a refuge for wildlife, the blend of blooming red hibiscus (3) and prolific variegated pink and snow white oleanders (4) that line the road also provide cover for exquisite vacation homes occupied by luminaries seeking solitude and sun. At times only a sliver of mangroves separate estuaries to the east and pristine sea oat-covered dunes anchoring undeveloped beach to the west. This is the Mecca boaters seek, in particular two marina resorts, different as night and day, yet all in year-round high demand.

South Seas Island Resort

Captiva’s premier boater destination is South Seas Island Resort. Back in full glory after the devastation from Charley 11 years ago, this gated, 330-acre tip of the island retreat (5) pulls together a blend of natural beauty and resort-quality activities that cater to all generations. A newly dredged channel from the Intracoastal Waterway all but eliminates timing arrivals and departures based on tidal flow. Popular with cruise clubs (6) along Florida’s West Coast,

Southwest Florida Yacht Charters offers boaters paradise — without the passport. by Alan Wendt weekends see a fair share of custom yachts as well. A new 76-foot Monte Carlo eased into Lima dock next to our tie-up. Just about every yachtsman poked heads out of cabins, watching with envy as the skipper skillfully toyed with the multidirectional joystick, bringing her alongside with little need for dockhand assistance. Firm side-to slips accommodate all but the megayachter. Gas and diesel fuel docks make this a popular halfway stop for West Coast Florida boats heading to and from the Keys. With three pools, including a new one for kids with water slides, Jet Ski, kayak and paddleboard rentals, a par-3 executive golf course that fronts the beach (7), tennis courts, and a host of other activity-based diversions, this is the ideal meet-up resort. Massillon, Ohio boaters Joseph and Sandra Kuntz (8) are frequent visitors to South Seas. The resort is a short cruise aboard their 46-foot Sea Ray from their winter home in Estero, Florida. “Look around, you can still have friends and grandkids visit, but they don’t have to stay on the boat overnight,” Joe says as he points to the landside accommodations that surround the marina. As we noshed on finger foods and gourmet cheeses picked up from the South Seas marina deli, other boaters dropped by for this impromptu docktails party, sharing life stories, common interests and thoughts about boating along Pine Island Sound (9). Most were well traveled. Loved the Caribbean. Agreed that St. Barts sounded exotic, but that Captiva was less than two hours by plane from the Midwest and didn’t require a passport, Rosetta Stone crash course, or a second mortgage to pay for a few days of R&R. Best of all, you weren’t stuck on an island for seven days because of airline schedules. That notion of variety, flexibility and discovery kept working its way into the conversation, everyone eager to learn about our charter and cruising itinerary. My wife, Susan, is the cruise planner with a serious case of OCD for details (10). She had just two requests for this trip: No more than one night at each marina; and only one meal in a restaurant per day. The tough call was picking the night we were going to eat at Doc Fords Rum Bar & Grille: Friday at South Seas, or Saturday when we cruised to Pink Shell Marina and the flagship restaurant on Ft. Myers Beach.

13 For fans of Randy Wayne White, fishing guide turned adventure author and now restaurateur, a trip to Doc Fords is like a visit to Sloppy Joe’s in Key West. White’s novels are inspired by the backwater shrimpers and legion of offbeat, modern day characters likely to be found in the bait stores and beach art galleries, untouched by Florida’s theme parks and Interstates. Leveraging the author’s protagonist Doc Ford, the growing chain is earning serious culinary recognition for seafood treats like Yucatan Shrimp, “a vacation on a plate,” Banana Leaf Snapper (11) and deep water Mahi-Mahi (12). White routinely visits each location for book signings. I missed him by just one shrimp too many. He joins dozens of gifted authors who, for more than a century, have found inspiration cruising these skinny blue-green waters and back bays. “You’d be surprised at the notables who charter with us,” says Barb Hansen of Southwest Florida Yachts. From captains of industry to recent empty nesters reconnecting, Hansen sees many experienced and new boaters who come to charter from her diverse fleet of power and sail based in Cape Coral at Tarpon Point Marina. “We offer two, back-to-back, three-day introductory, hands-on courses all through this area,” she says. “Never more than a few hours from home base, this is a fantastic way to see if you’ll like boating, or can even get along with a spouse in tighter quarters than at home,” Hansen adds with a laugh. Chartering makes sense. An experienced boater can explore an area like Southwest Florida without having to ship his or her boat from the Great Lakes. If you’re thinking of buying a boat, a charter immerses you in all the aspects of boating at warp speed. The best part: Someone else is handling maintenance, haul-out and keeping spare oil and cleaners on board. You simply concentrate on the fun. Sort of like turning the grandkids over to the parents after a weekend. Our boat (13), a 1997 aft cabin, was ideal for two, maybe three couples or families. With two full heads and showers, a galley and ample seating, you really only need the proverbial swimsuit and toothbrush. Sheets, towels, tools… even a cute set of serving dishes for docktail parties are part of the charter package. Stopping at a nearby grocery store prior to check-in rounded out the provisions. The advance package of information from SWFY occupied many evenings before our trip, and consulting with Hansen was better than searching the web. We could have spent longer at the homeport of Tarpon Point. With a pool, eclectic sandal shops and art galleries, plus a Westin hotel with an upscale outdoor marina bar called the Nauti Mermaid, arriving early and staying late is encouraged.

“Letts Do It, hailing Pink Shell on 12,” I radioed as we rounded the tip of Matanzas Pass. Dockmaster Dave O’Connor greeted me by name instantly, provided a slip number and had us tied up and connected to shore power before I could even get the helm electronics shut down. Talk about efficiency; this resort has zoomed ahead on my list of Florida favorites. “The only thing we overlook is the beach,” quipps O’Connor (14). Guests are issued a waterproof arm band embedded with an RFID chip that unlocks marina showers, provides cashless charges for poolside beverages, Starbucks coffee in the a.m., and even a Sunday brunch at Jack’s. Ask for a table overlooking the 7-mile-long beach. O’Connor is a familiar face to boaters, having served as dockmaster at South Seas for years and several other resorts before signing on to oversee construction of the new Techno Marine advanced floating aluminum and composite docks. 39 slips in all, with room for 100-foot vessels, 30-, 50- and 100-amp service, and, of course, Wi-Fi. The marina and resort satisfies the boater who wants less seclusion and more variety in entertainment and landside accommodation choices. A themed pool (see if you can spot the iconic Octopus hugging the waterfall) (15) and a quieter adult pool are steps from the marina. Like South Seas, there are many planned activities to keep little ones busy all day, with a focus on eco-tours and an on-staff naturalist who leads kayak trips to spoil islands for birding, shelling and even dolphin watching. On our cruise, a trio of bottle nose dolphin juveniles took a liking to our boat and auditioned for a role in the next “Dolphin Tale” movie, jumping in our wake over and over. While you easily can stay put for lunch or dinner at the cool tropical rainforest setting of Bongos Bar & Grill, less than a mile from the marina is Ft. Myers Beach. Every 15 minutes a trolley stops in front of the Pink Shell for the 5-minute, 75-cent ride to the city pier and entertainment district known as Times Square (16). Like Key West’s Mallory Square, buskers will keep you in stitches hustling for tips. There are dozens of outdoor dining establishments, rooftop sunset bars, ice cream stores, galleries, and, yes, signature sunsets (17). Pink Shell offers a dining experience that is sure to rekindle the romance. Dinner for two on the beach at sunset; your white linen table decorated with a single candle hurricane lamp, centerpiece bowl of pink auger and scallop shells, and your toes wiggling in the sand. Imagine the boating memories you’ll make by slowing down to 3 or 4 knots and leaving the daily routine trailing behind in your wake. ★

ettled in 1830 where Trail Creek flows into the southern-most tip of Lake Michigan, historic Michigan City, Indiana is a charming port city offering boaters easy walkability to an abundance of fun and cultural activities. “There’s so much to do,” says Rod Bensz, who, along with his brother, Barry, now owns B&E Marine — founded by their father six decades ago. “There are transient slips with the Port Authority at Washington Park and with us. From there, people can venture out to Shoreline Brewery and the Lubeznik Center for the Arts. Franklin Street, which is the main street downtown and is close to the harbor, has really great restaurants like Matey’s and Galveston Steakhouse.” Bensz notes that the city’s Washington Park edges the Lake Michigan shoreline and is perfect for beach lovers with water that’s both placid and wavy, depending on its mood. Besides swimming and sunning, there’s always the hunt for beach glass, those pieces of old bottles polished by the water into smooth, softly hued tones. Grizzlies, tigers, bald eagles and monkeys are just some of almost 100 animal species set in natural-like habitats at the Washington Park Zoo. The zoo also runs a safari train, and the Oasis Splash Park is a quick way to cool down on a hot summer day. “We have beautiful beaches, including the Indiana State beach,” says Bensz, who grew up in Michigan City and marvels at its transformation,

Things to see and do

For 43 long years, lighthouse keeper Harriet Colfax climbed the 40-foot staircase to the lantern tower to light the beacon at dusk each night at what is now Michigan City’s Old Lighthouse Museum on Lake Michigan. The job required Colfax, who was no spring chicken by the time she retired in 1904 at age 80, also to return at midnight, to trim the wick and polish the lens before refueling the light. Rough and cold, stormy weather often caused the oil to congeal, so Harriet would descend the stairs and reheat it before heading back up. At dawn, she returned to turn off the light. And as if that weren’t enough, when the pier beacon was moved to the other side of Trail Creek, Colfax rowed the 500 feet across the channel carrying fuel. But all this work didn’t daunt Colfax, and even now her ghost is said to protectively hover around the lighthouse. — J.A.

The Birth of B&E Ron Bensz had $300 in his pocket, a beat-up old Chevy truck and a passion for racing 12- to 14-foot Mercury boats in the Michigan City harbor. The year was 1953, and when a local marina that sold Mercury outboards decided to sell another brand instead, Bensz bought the outboards from him and, along with his friend, Roland Evett, a hydroplane enthusiast, leased a parcel of land on Trail Creek and founded B&E Marine. At the time, Michigan City was more industrial, but Bensz, who also was working for the Northern Indiana Public Service Company constructing towers from Michigan City to Valparaiso, saw a potential market — and besides, he loved boating and had an extremely supportive wife. Always an entrepreneur, Bensz made a deal with the landowner: He’ll supply the materials if his landlord would erect a small building. “I told him that if I went out of business, you’ll still have a building,” recalls Bensz. “Then I learned that someone else was trying to buy the land. I didn’t have any money, but I called the owner and told him I’d give him the interest on the money the first year; the next year I’d give a few thousand dollars; and the third year I’d pay it off.” By the third year, Evett’s wife had enough of long hours and poor profits. “She told him he wasn’t spending any time with his kids, and he wasn’t going to church on Sunday,” says Bensz. “So I bought him out.” In those early years, most boats were in the 14- to 16-foot range. “There weren’t cruisers like there are now, and so my dad told me to go learn a trade,” he says. But Bensz had faith in B&E, and even though he apprenticed as a mill carpenter to appease his father, he kept the marina going, hiring a couple of retired guys to run it during the weekdays.

This is where the supportive wife comes in. “I had to have a very wonderful wife to put up with that, and I did,” Bensz says. Today, Ron’s sons, Barry and Rod, run business (daughter Jennifer worked there in high school but is now an artist in Tennessee). B&E now has 35 full-time employees as well as seasonal workers, and the business encompasses 10 buildings covering 100,000 square feet with 70 permanent slips. They also offer two hoists, ramps and fuel docks. When asked if he was surprised at how big the business had grown, Bensz laughs and says, “I get asked that a lot and I always say, ‘I really thought I’d be bigger by now.’” — J.A.

LaPorte, Indiana French for passageway, LaPorte County and the city of LaPorte earned their monikers in the early 1600s, when French fur traders saw a natural opening through the heavily wooded forests. At the time, this area of woods and waterways were part of the vast lands belonging to the Potawatomi Nation before being settled in 1832. It’s easy to see what attracted the Potawatomi and Voyageurs both. LaPorte, a lovely city centered on an old-fashioned, red sandstone courthouse complete with gargoyles and tower, has a thriving downtown and myriad public parks, many of which are dotted with lakes for fishing, swimming and boating. The 170-acre Fox Memorial Park, which encompasses 100-acre Clear Lake, is the place to be on summer nights to hear the sounds of the City Band. Founded in 1879 and one of the oldest municipal bands in the state, they perform at the Dennis F. Smith Amphitheater. Stone Lake, nestled in the 566-acre Soldier’s Memorial Park, is home to the Maple City Grand Prix, an annual event featuring the world’s fastest tunnel boats barreling through the waters at more than 100 miles per hour. Hesston would have been like a century or so ago, there’s a 1900 saw mill and a blacksmith’s shop, as well as a vintage amusement steam train like those found in old time fun parks back in the early 20th century.

International Friendship Garden Bog Garden

Spacious stretches of emerald green punctuated with copse of woods and brilliantly blooming gardens, as well as a lake and creek, garden art, pathways and peaceful settings for sitting, picnicking and contemplation, the International Friendship Gardens (IFG), north of downtown Michigan City, intersect with history in so many ways. Father Pierre Marquette, who, in the mid- to late-1600s, explored the Lake Michigan shoreline, blessed one of several springs that feed into Trail Creek, a broad expanse of water that courses through the gardens. And when IFG opened in 1936, one of the gardens was brought over plant by plant from the 1933-34 Chicago World’s Fair, “A Century of Progress International Exposition.” At one time, the 105-acre IFG was home to the Pottawatomi Indians, and their heritage and traditions are reflected in the Native American garden, one of six that showcase gardening customs of the world. Other gardens include the Scottish Garden accented with the Flag of St. Andrew and several lion statues; the Norway Garden adorned with a wooden Viking and dragon-headed clock tower; and the lovely Chinese Bridge Garden. Past or present, outdoors or in, there’s a cornucopia of fun things to do and see in Michigan City and LaPorte County that will keep everyone entertained, no matter the season. ★

Just one north of mile G Haven cha rand nnel!

Spring Lake, MI Modern retreat with impressive views of Lake Michigan.

A

s the Lake Michigan breeze rolls in, the beach grass sways around a custom, spa-like raised deck. Soothing sounds of the lake can be heard from the cracked picture windows. This isn’t your average Michigan cabin. With a contemporary exterior and sleek interior flaunting rich, beamed wood ceilings, wood floors and wall-to-wall windows, this home flawlessly fuses modern lines with natural elements. The 3-bedroom, 2,800-square-foot home is settled just one mile north of the Grand Haven channel, directly west of Spring Lake and in a picturesque sightline of Lake Michigan. “The home has incredible views from every room, with the latest and greatest features,” says realtor Sandi Gentry. “There’s incredible frontage that you can walk out to the lake, where the steps are on a bluff and the beach is all sand. It’s just beautiful.” Built in 2009, the interior of this newly constructed, custom contemporary Arts and Crafts-style home features clean lines, soaring ceiling, a floating second-floor walkway, and floor-to-ceiling stacked stoned fireplace. The open floor plan guides you from the comfortable living room into the gourmet

kitchen showcasing top-of-the-line stainless steel appliances and countertops and custom cabinetry. Gather the whole family around the spacious island, or enjoy a meal around the dining room table, which is surrounded by grand windows offering stunning views of the private deck and lakefront. “It could be a year-round home or a summer getaway,” Gentry says. “If you’re a boater, there’s a marina just two minutes away, or you can moor your boat in front of the house.” On the second floor, the spacious master retreat features a contemporary wooden, built-in entertainment center and office station with a fireplace and plenty of natural light. The ensuite master bath is a stone oasis. with double vanity, glass and stone shower, soak tub and private water closet. There’s an additional room on the second floor and a guest room on the main floor that walks out onto the custom deck. The front of the home features an impressive entertaining space on a raised deck, with bench seating, built-in fireplace and pergola canopy, making it the perfect spot to watch a West Michigan sunset. ★

Charlevoix, Michigan Town and Cedar home sports some of the best views in Northern Michigan.

E

nter the 100-year-old historic fieldstone archway at the Evergreen Point Association, established behind Castle Farms in Charlevoix, Michigan, and you’ll be greeted by a phenomenal, custom-built Town and Cedar home that represents Northern Michigan living at its finest. Situated on 2.5 acres, a fantastic, estate-size parcel on Lake Charlevoix, the home features a rolling front yard, private beach and ample space for that game of croquet or bocce ball. The expansive, two-tiered backyard deck overlooking the lake makes for a sublime sunrise viewing experience. “With 200 feet on Lake Charlevoix, just a couple miles out of city, it’s a great location and great property,” says realtor Jeff Wellman. “It’s one of those homes that everyone loves on Lake Michigan, in the woods and on the lake.” No detail was spared inside the 4,000-square-foot, four-bedroom, four-bathroom home, with more than enough space to entertain and host house guests. The impressive great room features cathedral ceilings, a wall of windows and a two-story stone fireplace. The open kitchen

LAKELANDBOATING.COM

is completely updated with granite countertops and custom wood cabinetry. There’s plenty of space to cook for a family reunion, and as homeowner Jamie Buhr puts it, “Anyone who gets stuck working in the kitchen has a view of the lake.” The kitchen flows seamlessly into the dining room, to connect to the spacious, four-season sunroom overlooking the lake. “It has lots of windows and skylights that open up, so whether you’re playing a game of euchre or reading a book, it’s a wonderfully pleasant room to spend time in,” Buhr says. The main-floor master bedroom boasts bowed windows, creating the perfect reading nook facing the lake. On the second floor, an A-frame landing, which houses the office, overlooks the great room and connects the two upstairs bedrooms. An endless bunkroom situated over the garage has plenty of beds (six, to be exact) for the grandkids slumber parties. “Lake Charlevoix is a key to anywhere,” Wellman says. “It’s a protected harbor, the third largest lake in the state, and you have access to the world through downtown Charlevoix and into Lake Michigan.” ★

Pier 7 Marina Bay City’s oldest continuously operating marina specializes in wood repair.

T

ake a cruise down the Saginaw River, off the mouth of Saginaw Bay, and you’ll discover Bay City, Michigan’s oldest continuously operating marina — Pier 7 Marina. Established in 1954 as Tom Plowdrey’s Yacht Harbor, the marina has a longstanding history in eastern Michigan. “We’re known for our quality service work and for both mechanical and custom woodworking; we have a very good reputation on the service end,” says Chuck Frantz, Pier 7 president. Frantz has been at Pier 7 for 25 years and has seen firsthand the growth of the locally owned and operated marina into a reputable wood repair facility. Pier 7’s specialty is its woodworking craft — the marina offers wood and fiberglass repair from minor gelcoat issues to extensive restorations. It’s the only wood repair shop in the Great Lakes Bay region. Pier 7 was the first marina in the city to offer heated storage during winter back in 1990. With a more than 6,000-square-foot indoor heated storage facility, Pier 7 can store and haul 250 boats from 35 tons to 65 feet, and also can accommodate additional boats in the outdoor storage

LAKELANDBOATING.COM

area. Frantz says that the storage facility, which also features a ship’s store, reaches capacity year after year. On the waterfront, there’s dockage for 43 vessels up to 125 feet. The marina also offers full showers and restrooms for boaters, gas, diesel, and pump-out facilities. Bay City is a prime location for boating: The river, Saginaw Bay and Lake Huron are bustling, and the city is brimming with recreational activities year-round. Events such as the popular River Roar Formula 1 boat racing in June and the Bay City Fireworks Festival in July draw thousands . “There’s hardly ever a weekend without something going on around the waterfront,” Frantz says. “It’s a very active river and also very convenient for boaters in the Great Lakes Bay region.” Since 1995, Pier 7 has been an authorized Boston Whaler, Mercury and MerCruiser dealer. The marina sells new and used boats, as well as boat parts. With a well-rooted community history, vast experience and comprehensive services, this Bay City gem is your one-stop shop for storage, service and sales. ★

Extraordinary Story of Survival Sailor missing at sea for 66 days is miraculously rescued. n the afternoon of April 2, a man was spotted standing atop a disabled, 35-foot, 1965 sailboat, Angel, approximately 200 miles off the North Carolina coast. He had been lost at sea for more than two months, and his boat, without a doubt, was his “angel.”

The rescue Watchstanders at the U.S. Coast Guard 5th District Command Center in Portsmouth received notification from the 1,085-foot, German-flagged motor vessel Houston Express indicating it spotted a man on a disabled vessel and took him aboard. When the Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew arrived on scene, they airlifted the man from Houston Express and promptly medevaced him to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk. The man was 37-year-old Louis Jordan, and he was initially reported missing by his family on January 29, after failing to return from a fishing trip. On February 8, the Coast Guard began its search, but it was finally suspended after 10 days. “For him to be in his current state was pretty amazing,” says Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Kyle McCollum, an aviation survival technician who helped rescue Jordan. “You would expect severe sunburn, blisters maybe, a bunch of medical issues that could possibly be wrong with him.” But Jordan was healthy. He lost about 30 pounds and had a shoulder injury, but beyond that he was alive and well.

Fishing trip nightmare On January 23, Jordanreportedly set sail from Bucksport Plantation Marina in Conway, South Carolina and headed north to do some fishing. Several days after departing, Jordan reportedly hit stormy weather. “I was planning on catching some big ones,” Jordan told The Today Show. “On the way there, my boat capsized. I was actually sleeping, that’s when it happened. The whole boat had turned around, and I was flying through the air somersaulting, and the ceiling was the floor and the floor was the ceiling, and this side was the other side, and everything was upside down and backwards.” The mast on his boat reportedly broke, along with his electronic equipment and Jordan’s shoulder, though his boat managed to right itself.

Survival In order to survive with a dwindling supply of food and water, the remainder of Jordan’s days at sea reportedly consisted of him filling up his water tank with rainwater and using his laundry to attract fish, CNN reported.

“Louis Jordan stated that he had food and water on board his vessel that he rationed,” says Nate Littlejohn, public affairs specialist 2nd Class, U.S. Coast Guard 5th District Public Affairs. “When that ran out, he fished and collected marine life and rainwater.” Jordan told CBS, “The waves were huge, and the wind was strong. I’m an inexperienced sailor. I haven’t had a lot of time on the water, and I was just praying to God, you know, to please protect me.” The sailor also reportedly stayed inside the cabin for many of the days lost at sea to avoid sun exposure. Jordan also stated that he made a makeshift mast with a small sail to get the boat headed in a westward direction. “I tried to conserve as much energy as I could,” Jordan told NBC News. “I tried not to do any work, because work equals food and water, and I was trying to ration all that.”

Safety reminder While this story is a rare success of survival after being lost at sea, it’s important to remember the things Louis Jordan could have done to prevent this harrowing experience from occurring. “Had there been a vessel-mounted hydrostatically activated EPIRB on board, it would have immediately initiated the [Search And Rescue satellite] system when the boat was knocked down,” says USCG Public Affairs Officer Lt. Krystyn Pecora. “We would have received a report within minutes,” echoes USCG Cmdr. Tim Eason. “I’m not saying he wasn’t safety conscious. He did have safety gear on board, but the VHF antenna snapped when the boat rolled over. The cell phone didn’t work, and the flares were never seen. If he’d filed a float plan and had an EPIRB on board, it could have dramatically lessened the ordeal.” Jordan reportedly had not submitted a float plan, which would have provided details about his destination as well as how long he intended to be out at sea. “If he had filed a float plan prior to heading to sea, (flOatplancentral.Org/dOwnlOad/UScgflOatplan.pdf), the Coast Guard might have had a better chance of finding him when he was first reported missing in January,” says Littlejohn. “Simply telling someone where you’re going and when you plan to return greatly enhances somebody’s chance of being found if something goes wrong while boating.” In Jordan’s statement, he thanked the Coast Guard rescuer who hoisted him to safety and the Houston Express crew who saved him. “Their sacrifice demonstrates that our basic humanity is to care for and protect one another,” Jordan says. “I’m grateful for all of your support and for your honoring my story.” H
