CARVER VACUUM INFUSION TECHNOLOGY MEANS LESS WEIGHT, MORE STRENGTH, AND BETTER PERFORMANCE. The key to great performance and better fuel economy is a lighter boat. But we don’t sacrifice strength for performance. To keep our boats lighter and stronger, Carver uses a unique vacuum infused resin technology that draws in a precise amount of resin to saturate the fiberglass laminate rather than “over wetting” like other processes can do.
This state-of-the-art technology eliminates voids and excess fiberglass and resin build-up making the part both lighter and stronger. That’s why we use this technology in the formation of our hulls and most other component parts. Add it all up, and we eliminate hundreds of pounds of excess weight with a yacht that’s stronger and ready to take on the sea. No wonder Carver Yachts is taking the marine industry by storm. Sea trial one at your Carver Yachts dealer soon.
Advanced technology, combined with traditional craftsmanship, is the hallmark of every Carver Yacht. Vacuum resin infusion provides a stronger, yet lighter hull for higher speeds and greater fuel economy.
2-5-10
Limited Warranty
Carver Yachts transferable 2-5-10 Limited Warranty includes: 2-year stem-to-stern warranty protection for all Carver systems, components and workmanship; 5-year gelcoat blister warranty protection; and 10-year structural warranty protection for the hull and deck. Ask your Carver dealer for warranty details and requirements.
Vacuum infusion technology eliminates excess resin build-up by delivering just the right amount of resin to every inch of the part making it stronger and lighter.

Spring Fever
MARCH 2017 | VOLUME LXXI, NO. 3
PUBLISHER Walter “Bing” O’Meara
P
erhaps it’s the dragging, lackluster winter in Chicago, or maybe it’s the countless pictures of dreamy yachts cruising in tropical locations that bombard my email every day, but I have never been more ready for spring to arrive. I bet the majority of you reading are just as ready to put your swimsuits on and jump right into the boating season, but before you do, have you properly outfitted your boat? Our March issue focuses on just that: Outfitting. Does your boat need bowthrusters (p. 28), connected electronics (p. 30) or a storage solution for your dinghy (p. 46)? We’ve got you covered. If you’re in the market for a new boat, take a look at the Beneteau Monte Carlo 6 (p. 38) and the Premier 250 S-Series pontoon (p. 42). During the Monte Carlo 6 sea trial, our publisher reminded us that the only way to truly relax is while on a boat; he found the yacht so comfortable that he had to test out the aft deck loungers! Contributor Heather Steinberger takes a step back in time Publisher Bing O’Meara shows us how to and introduces us to a few scandalous characters: Great Lakes relax on the Beneteau Monte Carlo 6. pirates (p. 50). Learn about the lives of the rum-running, timber-stealing, booze-loving pirates who roamed the Sweetwater Seas. Turn back the clock yet again and learn about the essential — yet often overlooked — art of celestial navigation (p. 48). Contributor Gina J. Grillo writes about relying less on our GPS and learning how to read the stars. Lastly, plan a trip this year to a unique place where you can simultaneously straddle the U.S. and Canada: Sarnia, Ontario and Port Huron, Michigan (p. 54). Craig Ritchie explores these lake port and river town communities boasting Caribbean-blue water. Think spring! Do you have a story idea you’d like to suggest? Email me at kbush@ lakelandboating.com to share your ideas.

Saxon Harbor Flood On July 11, 2016, a major storm hit Gogebic and Iron counties in Wisconsin and caused widespread destruction. Saxon Harbor, on the south shore of Lake Superior, was completely destroyed. This storm caused the loss of at least 29 boats, a campground, camper trailers and, worst of all, the loss of one life.
CANINE CREW Our rescue dog, Twain, has been with us for the last three boating seasons while we’ve gone on Great Lakes adventures on Lake Michigan, Lake Erie, Lake Huron and Lake Superior, including the Apostle Islands and Mackinac Island. The current home port for our boat True North, a Meridian 490 Pilothouse, is at Centerpointe Marina in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. —Stuart, Jennifer, Max, Reagan and Twain Simek Debris in the lake was found from Saxon Harbor to the Keweenaw Peninsula. Local boaters, the U.S. Coast Guard, the National Guard, the governors of both Michigan and Wisconsin, as well as emergency agencies of both federal and state level responded to the disaster. Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker declared a state of emergency for the eight counties affected by the storm, while Michigan Governor Rick Snyder declared a state of emergency for Gogebic County. The storm caused 14 inches of rainfall, 90 mph winds and a confirmed EF1 tornado. The current assistance figure needed to clean up Saxon Harbor is $2,198,178, which covers rebuilding the marina and dredging the harbor. All the boat owners at the harbor have stories to tell. It’s a lesson in boat insurance and raises questions about boat replacement. I would think your readers might have an interest in this story and might learn something on how to protect their boats and be properly insured. Leland Dredging Dilemma
Leland Harbor has not been dredged in two years. Since the harbor is a Federal Harbor of Refuge, it is the federal government (via the Army Corps) that is responsible for annual maintenance dredging. Since 1999 we have had to beg for federal dollars (earmarks) to get the job done. It is unrealistic to expect a township of 2,000 residents to cough up $300,000 each year to get the project completed. In addition to our recreational guests, Leland Harbor serves as home port to: National Park Service vessels (park rangers and maintenance personnel); charter, commercial and tribal fishers; law enforcement; and the Manitou Island Transit, which ferries passengers to and from the Manitou Islands. The harbor is an integral part of the local economy. Please help us get the word out that the federal government and the Army Corps need to address this situation. —Russell Dzuba, Leland, MI

Michigan DNR Launches Invasive Carp Challenge
Listen up, innovators; the State of Michigan is seeking ideas on how to keep invasive bighead, silver, and black carp out of the Great Lakes, through the DNR’s Invasive Carp Challenge. Governor Rick Snyder and the Michigan Legislature have authorized $1 million to launch a global search for creative thinkers who can provide the best solutions to this looming crisis. Silver and bighead carp have been located within 10 miles of the electric barrier dams near the Chicago River. The carp can grow to more than 100 pounds, jump out of the water, and threaten local ecosystems and native species. The invasive species could greatly affect the $7 billion fishing industry in the Great Lakes and disrupt the largest freshwater ecosystem in the world. The good news is you can help prevent further movement of silver and bighead carp. Submit your solutions to prevent invasive carp from entering the Great Lakes. Cash prizes will be awarded for one or more solutions submitted, and everyone with an idea is encouraged to apply. Mercury Joystick Piloting for Inboards
The U.S. Coast Guard honored Brunswick’s David Marlow for his “outstanding contributions to recreational boating safety” by awarding him the Meritorious Public Service Award — the second highest public service award given by the Coast Guard.
Mercury Marine has expanded its joystick technology to tow sport boats with the launch of its Joystick Piloting for Inboards. The joystick technology allows a single engine to work with bow and sternthrusters to provide ultimate vessel control and superior driving experience. The system is designed for use with the tow sports variants of Mercury’s new and award-winning range of purpose-built marine inboard and sterndrive engines. “The migration of our joystick technology, specifically Joystick Piloting for Inboards, is intended to disrupt a segment of the market that has never seen this technology before,” says David Foulkes, Mercury Marine vice president of product development, engineering and racing, and Brunswick Corporation chief technology officer. Michigan Businesses Create Network to Protect the Great Lakes
In the face of a potential oil pipeline leak under the Straits of Mackinac, a group of businesses — including Patagonia and several Michigan breweries — has formed the Great Lakes Business Network to help protect the Great Lakes and the communities that rely on its water. The twin 63-year-old pipelines, known as Line 5, pump more than 20 million gallons of oil per day. The Great Lakes Business Network’s primary objective is decommissioning the twin pipelines. Companies involved include: Bells Brewing; Shepler’s Mackinac Island Ferry; Sleeping Bear Surf & Kayak; Patagonia; Lake Charlevoix Brewing Co.; Cherry Republic; National Wildlife Federation Great Lakes Regional Center; and many more. “This is a very important issue for businesses in this state,” says Chris Shepler, owner of Shepler’s Mackinac Island Ferry. “My livelihood depends on clean water and a healthy Great Lakes. This pipeline threatens all of that. That’s why it’s the top topic of conversation in Northern Michigan.” For more info, visit GLBUSINESSNETWORK.COM.

Second Shipwreck Sanctuary One Step Closer to Reality The Great Lakes region is only a few steps away from obtaining a second federally protected marine sanctuary for shipwrecks. On January 6, 2017, the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announced that plans to designate up to 1,260 square miles of Lake Michigan along Wisconsin’s coastline as a marine sanctuary had entered a multi-month public review stage — one of the last steps in what has already been a multi-year project. The region under review contains 38 known and 95 potential shipwrecks; the most famous of which include the “Christmas Tree Ship” wreck of the Rouse Simmons, the 1833 Gallinipper wreck and a freighter filled with vintage Nash automobiles. Public meetings are scheduled for March and public comment is accepted until March 31.

The Village at Grand Traverse Commons From asylum to oasis, history is revived at mixed-use community in Traverse City.
(Top) Staff at the Traverse City State Hospital. (Bottom) Hallway scene at the Traverse City State Hospital.
s you gaze upon the grand, brick structure that is referred to as Building 50 at The Village at Grand Traverse Commons, you may wonder how this hauntingly beautiful place was originally constructed in just two short years, considering its size and ornate detail. It’s hard to believe that 11 million bricks were hand-laid in 1883 to create the structure, which originally housed the Traverse City State Hospital (also known as the Northern Michigan Asylum). We now know Traverse City as a popular tourist destination, notable for its artistic community, tart cherries and abundance of recreation opportunities. But in the early 1900s, most people would have known the city as the home of the Traverse City State Hospital — once the city’s largest employer, and which greatly contributed to Traverse City’s economic growth and stability. Photographs, memorabilia and awards paying tribute to the building’s history adorn the interior walls of Building 50. Today, the former asylum’s dozen buildings and cottages have been reimagined into a mixed-use commercial and residential complex on 63 rolling acres, offering visitors a little bit of everything with a collection of shops, restaurants, galleries, boutiques and even apartments surrounded by more than 400 acres of preserved parkland. History of Traverse City State Hospital In the late 1880s, the patients at the Traverse City State Hospital were admitted with “ailments” such as: Dementia, schizophrenia, depression, tuberculosis, homosexuality, autism, polio and bloodlust. A percentage of women were dropped off by husbands who claimed “their wives were crazy,” mentions a Grand Traverse Commons tour guide during a guided historic walking tour. The asylum was operated under the well-intentioned, watchful eye of Dr. James Decker Munson for many years with the philosophy: “Beauty is therapy.” This was made evident through the copious flora he planted on the hospital grounds, the musical sing-alongs that were orchestrated for his patients and the open-air approach he instilled. The mission of this mental institution was to rehabilitate by providing purpose

for the patients through work; doctors would match patients with jobs suitable to their condition to occupy a healthy portion of their time — such as tending to livestock, farming and cultivating — which in turn helped the hospital cut costs by being somewhat self-sustaining. Patients even helped care for the beloved world champion milk cow, Traverse Colantha Walker, who was eventually buried on the grounds. Many patients seemed to enjoy their surroundings and new-found purpose at the hospital, which is most likely why there were no gates enclosing the perimeter; many of the patients had nowhere to go and this beautiful place felt like their home. “The historical architecture of the hospital is truly amazing to see in person,” says Traverse City resident, Brian Vanderbaan. “The people behind its conception had clearly looked at the buildings as fine art versus structures solely built to house the insane.” The asylum closed its doors in 1989 and was left in disrepair. Many of the smaller buildings were demolished. Heidi Johnson, author of “Angels in the Architecture: A Photographic Elegy to an American Asylum” wrote, “The asylum opened its doors in 1885, and by the time it closed… it had affected 50,000 patients, approximately 20,000 employees and more than 250,000 visitors.” A vision for the property In 2002, Ray Minervini, a Detroit native and business entrepreneur, gained ownership of 63 of the 484 acres that had made up the hospital’s land. Minervini purchased the land for $1 with the agreement that he would follow strict guidelines to preserve and historically restore the property. The Minervini Group, with their concept of The Village at Grand Traverse Commons, has since redeveloped this site into a thriving mixed-use space comprised of more than

100 businesses. They envisioned a community featuring eclectic shopping, restaurants, offices, an elderly living community, condos and year-round events. The Village offers a truly unique dining experience that melds historic ambience, modern flair and delectable cuisine. Eateries include: Trattoria Stella, an upscale, old world restaurant focused on locally-sourced dishes; Pleasanton Brick Oven Bakery, which offers artisan breads, sweets and “world-class garlic herb butter,” according to Vanderbaan; Pepenero, featuring made-from-scratch Mediterranean meals; and Spanglish, where you can dine on to-die-for tamales. With these options, even the pickiest eaters can find something to satisfy their palette. A variety of locally-owned retail shops occupy the Mercato (Italian for marketplace) in the garden level of Building 50, ranging from: Landmark Books, offering first editions, classics and out-of-print books; Vintage Du Jour, selling upcycled items and home décor; High Five Threads, a Michigan apparel company; and Notably Natural Botanicals & Aromatherapy, featuring handmade soap, gluten-free skin care products and toiletries. If you’re looking for a hot cup of joe, a craft beer or a glass of wine while you tour the Village, there are several coffee shops, a brewery and Left Foot Charley Winery. Fun fact: The numbered doors on the side of the winery’s bar are from actual patients’ rooms. There are many recreational opportunities to enjoy while you’re visiting, such as bocce ball, hiking, biking trails and more. There is an annual bocce ball tournament, farmers markets, live music performances during the warmer months and several festivals on the “Front Lawn” throughout the year, including the Colantha Walker Dairy Festival and the Traverse City Wine and Art Festival. Touring history While you’re here, don’t miss your chance to partake in one of the historic guided walking tours. These tours provide an entertaining narrative from a knowledgeable staff member about the history surrounding the area, all while seeing first-hand the grounds, abandoned buildings, underground tunnels and architecture that were part of the Traverse City State Hospital. “On my tour, the guide explained that the tunnels were occasionally used to transport bodies of the deceased in the winter, because it was too cold to get them to the hospital by other means,” says visitor Taleah Huempfner. “Walking through the tunnels was definitely the most chilling and exciting part of my visit.” The Minervini group will continue renovating this historic property while paying tribute to the original architecture and initial mission of “Beauty is therapy.” New stores and restaurants are scheduled to open their doors this year. As the Village continues to take on new life, one can’t help but wonder what the walls of this immaculate compound have seen since their conception in 1883, and what they would tell us if the bricks could talk. ★

DON’T HESITATE TO RENOVATE by Capt. Frank Lanier
Bowthruster Basics
Bowthruster installations utilizing a remote battery or bank for power require sufficiently sized cables to minimize voltage drop.
A
bowthruster can mean greater confidence at the helm, safer docking and more time on the water. If you’ve been sitting on the fence, here’s a look at bowthruster basics to help decide if installing one is the right choice for you.
Single prop bowthrusters (above) typically cost less than comparably sized counter-rotating dual prop units, however dual props are more efficient and produce roughly 40 percent more thrust while using the same amount of horsepower.

Pros and cons A bowthruster is simply a propulsion device located at the bow that provides lateral thrust, making the vessel more maneuverable. Bowthrusters often come standard on many newer pleasure boats over 45 feet, but most any mid-sized vessel can be retrofitted. There are many bowthruster benefits, particularly for boaters who have to deal with gusty winds, strong currents, crowded docking areas or tight spaces. With a bowthruster, novice operators are more likely to actually get underway in a wider variety of conditions, while experienced captains can expand their options (sailing solo, for example) with greater safety. As to bowthruster cons, the first you’ll encounter will likely be cost. Although this will vary widely between the different makes, models and styles, you can expect purchase and installation of even the smallest, most economical unit to be around $5,000. In lockstep with the above is the complexity of your particular installation. What’s the best location? Will the water tank under the V-berth have to be shifted aft or relocated altogether? How powerful should the thruster be? Will the extra weight in the bow affect performance? All of these are valid concerns that you’ll want to research and review before considering a bowthruster installation. Choosing a bowthruster Installing a thruster can involve some major surgery, depending on the type selected and the design of your particular vessel. As such, you’ll want to thoroughly research the various options available in order to select the one that’s right for you. While in theory any thruster should work on any boat, selecting one that’s powerful enough to meet your performance requirements while matching the characteristics of your boat (type, size, hull shape, etc.) is crucial to get the greatest benefit. Some companies provide guides or charts that allow you to select a unit based on these considerations, but it’s always a good idea to get a second opinion from a professional, particularly if you’re dealing with unusual installation requirements. Installation considerations From a power standpoint, there are two bowthruster options: Electric or hydraulic. Electric units can be further divided into 12VDC or 24VDC types, or even the occasional AC-powered unit, although DC power is more popular and is our focus here.
LAKELANDBOATING.COM
Hydraulic thrusters are a common choice for larger vessels — particularly those that already have hydraulic systems on-board (anchor windlass, dinghy davits, etc.). Installing a hydraulic unit while utilizing an existing, centralized hydraulic power source costs less and will greatly simplify the installation. Unless you already have hydraulic systems on-board, however, electric units will typically be a more economical choice. Of the two electric options, 24VDC systems have some notable advantages — including the ability to use smaller wire and a lower voltage drop — and are particularly attractive for larger boats with more high-power draw equipment. That being said, 12VDC systems are more commonly found on mid-sized boats. As with hydraulics, unless your boat already utilizes a 24VDC system, a 12VDC system usually means a less complex installation, as the thruster can often be wired directly into a boat’s existing 12V system. A typical electric thruster installation involves either running cables of sufficient size (to minimize voltage drop) from an existing battery bank or installing a dedicated battery in the vicinity of the thruster, along with a method of charging it. As they likely won’t be used at the same time, a third option could be to piggyback off of an electric windlass circuit. While each of these systems will work if properly designed, the choice typically boils down to installation obstacles, space and expense (the cost of those heavy cable runs, as compared to a dedicated battery and charger, for example). From a physical installation standpoint, thruster options are a traditional (i.e. tunnel mounted) or externally mounted thruster. Tunnel mounted bowthrusters require a tube or tunnel be installed through the hull below the waterline, with the unit’s propeller(s) located inside. For best performance, the installation tube has to be placed as far forward as possible, yet deep enough below the waterline to generate maximum thrust (and avoid sucking air) — two competing requirements that are not always possible on boats less than 35 feet. Externally mounted units are an attractive alternative for boats with internal layout restrictions that prevent installation of a tunnel mounted bowthruster, or for owners who simply cringe at the thought of cutting large holes in their hull. One external brand, the Yacht Thruster, requires drilling a 1- to 2-inch hole to attach it via a threaded pipe, which is also used to route cabling. Another external option is the Sideshift bowthruster, which mounts to a vessel’s stem and uses no holes below the waterline in its installation. In fact, the manufacturer states it can be installed while the boat is in the water. Boating is supposed to be both fun and enjoyable, so any piece of equipment that increases confidence and peace of mind is definitely worth considering. ★

ELECTRONICS by Glenn Hayes
Connecting It All Together Interfacing electronics is easier than ever.
S
o you’ve purchased some fancy new electronics for your boat, and you’re dying to get out on the water to test them out; but before you do, consider how to tie in other equipment on-board. Today’s marine electronic equipment can share features and information like never before. Thanks to the widespread adoption of NMEA 2000 (an industry standard protocol for data sharing) in many new electronics, interfacing can be as simple as plug and play. Even if your equipment isn’t NMEA 2000 (N2K) compatible, you may still have some interfacing options worth looking into. N2K and beyond Many new chartplotters, fish finder combinations and multi-function displays now have the ability to interface with modern outboard and inboard engines. Information normally found in an array of analog gauges may now be available on your bright new displays, providing backup instrumentation or in some cases replacing your analog gauges altogether. Major engine manufacturers are providing N2K adapters for their sensors, which can be plugged into a N2K backbone and then into your display. All you need is a N2K starter kit that includes a power cable (to provide 12V to the backbone), a backbone cable, T-connectors and terminators. Just add a T-connector and a drop cable to run from the engine sensor/interface to the backbone and plug it in. Some electronics manufacturers, such as Navico, even have their own interface sensors that will plug into engine wiring harnesses and display fuel flow and consumption. Check with your electronics manufacturer to determine the best way to display your engine data on your combo unit or multi-function display.

Seamless stereo Another N2K interface popular during installation is connecting a N2K compatible stereo to capable chartplotters or multi-function displays. By doing so you can control and view your stereo functions easily through your display. Stereos, such as some FUSION models, can now be interfaced with compatible displays, including some Garmin and Navico models, allowing direct access through their touch-screens. There are many obvious advantages to this, including multiple controls, as well as the ability to mount the stereo head or black box unit in a protected or remote location. For most of these N2K compatible stereos, all that is needed is a N2K backbone, a drop cable and a T-connector to fully interface them to your display. Add Ethernet While N2K is great for systems control and monitoring, it can be limited in capability when it comes to transferring
LAKELANDBOATING.COM
large amounts of data, like that found in radar displays, video streaming and electronic charting. Ethernet works well with these types of data exchanges and may be required to run alongside the N2K data cables. If you plan on interfacing two displays together to share cartography, data, video and sounder displays, you will need to run both a N2K cable and an Ethernet cable to mirror both displays. Different manufacturers may use their own proprietary connectors for these cables, so make sure they will fit before you purchase. Connect a VHF NMEA 0183 was the most common data interface between marine electronics before NMEA 2000 came online. Many electronics still utilize this data interface and it can sometimes be found in the form of several fine data cables bundled alongside the power cables of many displays. Most VHF radios on the market utilize NMEA 0183 interfaces (with newer and soon to be released models utilizing N2K). By connecting the NMEA cables from your VHF to the onboard GPS, your Digital Selective Calling (DSC) button (the little red button under the red cover on your VHF) will not only transmit an automatic distress signal when pressed, but can also transmit your GPS position. A simple connection can speed rescue and save lives. To see how to make this simple wire-to-wire connection, you can refer to your VHF and GPS installation manuals. There are also NMEA 0183 to N2K gateways available, which can convert the data both ways to make interfacing and networking easier. If you have questions on interfacing your system, or on the components and wiring, check the installation manuals or call the manufacturer’s tech support lines; they will walk you through your connections. Anyone with moderate technical knowledge can now live fully connected aboard. Connect, plug in, motor out and enjoy your new technology on the water. ★

ASK THE EXPERT by Elizabeth Altick
Portable Power Honda Marine’s Gary Childress explains the advantages of new lightweight and powerful engines. LB: We understand Honda’s new BF4, BF5 and BF6 portable four-stroke outboards (4, 5 and 6 hp) are easy to transport and store. What in the design contributes to their portability?
Childress: Being lightweight (roughly 60 pounds) and a new handle design make these engines easy to carry and put away. The tiller handle fully folds out of the way, making storage options even more convenient. LB: Why are these engines easy to start and stop? CONTACT Honda Marine Group 4900 Marconi Dr. Alpharetta, Georgia 30005 770-497-6400 MARINE.HONDA.COM
Childress: A new decompression mechanism helps make all three new Honda Marine engines easy to pull-start, regardless of the engine temperature. The decompression mechanism opens the exhaust valve during the process, making them fast to start. A unique one-push stop switch shuts down the engine with no chance of the engine restarting; there’s no need to hold down a button or switch until the engine stops completely. LB: What is the running time of these engines?
LB: How did you solve vibration and engine noise issues?
ELIZABETH ALTICK specializes in recreational marine, cultural and humaninterest subjects. She was formerly executive editor of a recreational boating magazine.

Childress: The engine’s vibration levels are extremely low, made possible by the integration of new rubber mounts. The motor mounts connect the handle to the engine, and isolate the motor from the tiller. As a result, the handle grip and the boat hull experience minimal vibration across a wide operating range, from idle to high speeds. Boaters benefit from the low vibration as it reduces boater hand fatigue and contributes to a smoother ride. Less vibration also reduces noise and helps contribute to an optimal boating experience. LB: What makes these engines so reliable?
Childress: These models share the same proven one-cylinder, 127-cubic-centimeter engine block and benefit from Honda’s
LAKELANDBOATING.COM
four-stroke engine technology expertise. In addition, Honda provides an oil alert system; in case of an oil pressure drop, the system will automatically limit the engine speed to 2,300 rpm, helping to protect the engine and provide boaters peace of mind. LB: How much do these engines cost?
Childress: The U.S. manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of the BF4 is $1,875 and the BF5 is $2,025; the starting U.S. MSRP of the Honda Marine BF6 is $2,150. As always, we recommend that consumers check with their local Honda dealer for pricing. LB: What type of warranty do you provide?
Childress: Our True 5 Warranty is what you would expect from Honda. This transferable, five-year, factory-direct, non-declining warranty is simply the best warranty you will find. It is not a third party, “extended service” contract. The warranty is the same on the last day of ownership as it is on the first day and includes service at more than 1,000 expertly trained Honda Marine dealers across the nation. ★

Childress: The Honda BF4, 5 and 6 engines integrate a 1.5-liter, large-capacity internal fuel tank, which delivers the longest continuous running time in their class — more than 40 minutes at wide-open throttle. In addition, these four-stroke engines can be connected to an external fuel tank for longer journeys. Consumers have the choice of three additional propeller options to best fit their boating needs.

Four Winns HD 220 Pick your power.
I
n case you haven’t heard, boating is back. Last year’s sales reached pre-recession levels and the forecast for 2017 is even better. Interestingly, 95 percent of boats sold in the United States are made in this country. One of the brand leaders, Four Winns (based in Cadillac, Michigan), is proving that “customer is king” in terms of dictating how Americans want to boat. Case in point, the new HD 220 is offered in both outboard and sterndrive configurations. Outboards — with their fuel efficiency, quiet performance, range of horsepower and ease of maintenance — have dominated sterndrives for a decade, but last year sterndrives saw their first increase in sales in the past 10 years, thanks in part to innovation. Four Winns is unique among boatbuilders, allowing dealers to opt for Mercury, Evinrude or Yamaha outboards, or choose between Mercruiser and Volvo Penta sterndrive engines. So what’s the difference between sterndrives and outboards? The answer is akin to asking who is the greatest NFL quarterback of all time, and the debate would take pages. I found that the outboards delivered better speed
LAKELANDBOATING.COM
and the sterndrives had a tighter turn. One thing to test between outboard models is the car-like feel with power hydraulic steering verses cable assist steering. The floorplan for both configurations is identical from the bow back to the aft seat, but here’s where it gets interesting: The HD 220 OB has a trunk where the sterndrive motor normally resides. We’re talking about a huge trunk — a 5- by 3-foot-plus deep storage area for hiding just about anything. Seating is predictable for a 22-foot boat, with nice, wide bow loungers, swivel captain’s chairs at the helm, a bench seat in the aft with two armrests and built-in stainless steel cupholders, and a rear-facing seat for coving, which converts easily into a sunpad; it’s all hand -stitched Aquaflex upholstery, which is among the most comfortable seating on a boat today. In all, there’s room for 10 passengers. Both models have an optional enclosed porta-potti head — a marvelous feature that can extend your day on the water. ★

Galeon 445 HTS Sporty style with an edge.
T
he Galeon 445 HTS (Hardtop Sport) comes across as a sporty model, with sharp hull lines and generous curves highlighting the house and structure. There’s even a retractable sunroof in the hardtop for those days when you want the wind in your hair. Giving the hull a lift are multiple strakes. The go-go is from twin Volvo Penta IPS 600 diesel engines that produce 435 hp each, cranking out a 25-knot cruising speed and 30 knots wide-open. But the edge may be just how much interior volume this 43-foot hull (49 feet, 2 inches overall) boasts. There’s the salon (or sunroom as Galeon states, thanks to all the large windows) featuring a U-shaped settee with table and wet bar. And then there’s the open aft deck with a C-shaped sofa and table. A retractable glass door and window separate these areas. Forward to starboard is a full helm, complete with double bolstered seating, a Volvo engine display, switches and a Volvo Penta joystick control. Wide side decks lead to a generous bow lounge area, complete with a protective Bimini shade.
SPECIFICATIONS Below is the galley but in an atrium setup, keeping light and air flowing throughout thanks to skylights. A twin burner cooktop, a microwave, a fridge/freezer, countertops and cabinets keep it functional. Relax or dine on yet another U-shaped settee across the way. Forward is a VIP stateroom with center queen berth, portholes, a skylight and storage. Midship is a full-beam master with center queen berth and an ensuite head with a separate shower stall. A portside sofa, a dresser, opening portholes and carpeted flooring fit out the master. Make it your own by choosing the interior finishes, from striped or misty grey walnut flooring, to Roman blinds or wooden shutter window treatments, and white or beige color schemes. Matte, walnut cabinetry is available. Opt for the Comfort Pack, which features most helm electronics, a 32-inch Samsung TV for the salon and a 50-foot Cablemaster; or choose the Luxury Pack, which includes shades, VIP and master stateroom TVs, a hydraulic swim platform and a salon fridge. The sporty Galeon 445 HTS gives you the edge. ★

Sea Ray SLX-W 230 The new age of wakesurfing.
S
urf ’s up for Sea Ray with an out-of-the-box design in the growing wakesport category. Catering to the teenage phenomenon of surfing behind a boat, the new SLX-W 230 equally appeals to parents toting the note, as a simple flip of the switch transforms this play toy into an elegant runabout for coving and cruising. Power is provided by Mercury Marine’s V-Drive propulsion system, combining Sea Ray’s proprietary WakeTech wake-shaping plates with a deep-V hull design to create a 20-foot-long wave tuned to the rider’s liking, allowing for port or starboard wakes almost on the fly. During our testing, an accomplished rider managed to stay up during the switch from left to right — now that’s impressive! The “aha!” moment in design will likely cause boatbuilders to rethink the placement of ballast. For years, designers mounted phat sacks aft to create a wave for wakeboarders. The SLX-W 230 has 2,000 pounds of ballast centered forward near the helm and molded into a sophisticated hull instead of taking up valuable space
underneath the seat. In addition, the water passes through a heat exchanger from the engine and is connected to a warm, freshwater shower on the transom that should feel mighty good after a chilly ride. As swim platforms go, this one is deep and has an option for submersion, making re-entry effortless and appealing for a variety of watersports configurations. Joystick piloting capability is another innovation that allows drivers pinpoint precision and effortless docking, made possible with thrusters working in concert with the engine. “Customers were very clear about how difficult it was to maneuver traditional tow boats in close quarters, such as around docks or when picking up surfers,” says Sea Ray’s president and general manager of sport boats, Brad Anderson. “The SLX-W 230 makes it easy to dock in any condition and spin on a dime to pick up a fallen surfer more quickly.” This model includes a standard watersports tower, which lowers for towing or storage in a garage. The tower easily supports board racks and can speakers that add resonance and depth to beautiful days out on the water. ★

ne of the more quotable lines in movie history — “You’re going to need a bigger boat” — has for years been the de facto underpinning of brand expansion plans at nearly every boatbuilder. Ironically, every captain facing rough seas has probably uttered that same phrase a time or two without trying to imitate Roy Scheider’s character Sheriff Brody, who was referring to tracking down Jaws. Beneteau’s Monte Carlo 6 (MC6) is that bigger boat, not just because of its excellent seakeeping design, and certainly not for capturing sharks. This yacht boasts a wide-open layout on multiple levels that begs your social director to instantly begin a summer of party planning. Featuring an instinctive Euro identity with round portlight windows and a tulip-shaped bow, the MC6 combines Italian design influence with French ingenuity for robotic construction and smart engineering, which slashed production costs and offers the thrifty buyer a 60-foot yacht without excessive trimmings. Luxurious living space greets guests on every level. The hydraulic swim platform extends more than 5 feet from the transom, making it certainly wide enough for a tender and large enough to incorporate an optional aft galley with barbecue. Relaxing begins on the aft deck; have a cappuccino while reading the morning paper here, or plan an al fresco dinner for eight around the foldaway teak table.
Spacious living
Like many yachts today, designers are blending the transom living space with the salon. Sliding glass doors disappear up and down, creating a seamless blend of the indoors and outdoors. The salon is bathed in natural light from the deck windows and is buffered by opposing seating forward and a fully functional galley aft. This centered approach to entertaining keeps the host well positioned to remain an essential part of the conversation. The portside galley offers dry storage and refrigeration. Crafted behind matching cabinet doors are slide-out drawers that can serve as either refrigerators or freezers. From the aft deck, steps lead to yet another entertainment area: The massive flybridge. If it weren’t for the occasional rainstorm, I’d move the laptop here and never leave. The flybridge view is metaphorical on so many levels: Power, control, forecasting and the proverbial ladder of success. The MC6 delivers an elixir no bartender can mix.
LAKELANDBOATING.COM
Large for its class, a 7- by 6-foot well-cushioned sunpad aft leads to a 10-foot-long seating area that accommodates 8 to 10 adults. Foldaway leafs on the table make entry and egress of the seating area graceful. Whether you’re doing a deal or grilling a burger, the fully fitted flybridge galley precludes the need to run below for sustenance. A complete set of controls and instruments for the captain allow for total vessel operation. The entire area, except the sunpad, is covered by a fiberglass hardtop overhead, with a sunroof that opens at the flip of a switch. The lower helm station is the captain’s domain. Positioned forward of the salon, large 16- or 24-inch Simrad screens offer all the information needed to navigate. The single-piece windshield provides uncompromised visibility, and the comfortable Besenzoni helm seat has mounted controls for both the joystick and autopilot. Just to starboard is an elevated doublewide companion seat so others can enjoy the view and the company of the captain.
Comfort aboard
Below deck is also spacious. A beam-to-beam, midship master stateroom is precisely what you’d dream of: Hanging lockers; a bureau; bonus storage; 6-foot, 6-inch headroom; seating areas; a lighted vanity and sink; and a head that is split with the shower to one side and water closet the other, permitting a couple to get ready for a night ashore at the same time. Your overnight guests will also sleep in comfort in the two additional staterooms that offer an added twist; the
Beneteau Gran Turismo 46
beds gracefully slide apart into twins, and each stateroom boasts a private ensuite head with shower. On the forward bow deck are two sun loungers that take a cue from the “Transformer” movies and electrically move knee and back supports into place. Add cushions as necessary and ask a crewmember to bring you a cold one.
Impressive performance
Two Cummins QSC 8.3 600-hp Zeus pods powered our test boat. Top speed is rated at 28 knots; however, your ideal cruise is around 22 knots, translating into a range of 240 nautical miles — or roughly Chicago’s Navy Pier to Door County on one tank. Unlike other vessels where the bow pops up in concert with the throttles, the MC6 moves like an elevator, stepping up on plane in about 10 seconds and reaching top speed in 30 seconds. The entire process is effortless and quiet from the bridge. Where this vessel really shines is handling back at the dock. A rear joystick control hidden in the starboard aft showed off the Zeus precision docking as we effortlessly combated an outgoing tide and afternoon seabreeze that would challenge any bridge boat. With a displacement of about 43,000 pounds and a 16-foot, 2-inch beam, the MC6 makes a grand entrance. Owners who commission construction have interior design choices of standard Corian or Travertine Stone countertops; light brushed oak or warmer matte walnut woodwork; fabric and vinyl color selections; and a two stateroom, three stateroom or optional crew quarters layout. This is that bigger boat, and it’s one that won’t break the bank. H
A stunning profile, supreme salon entertainment space to easily accommodate 10 adults, and two sumptuous aft deck loungers (akin to what you have in a home theater setting) help define Beneteau’s Gran Turismo 46. This is the third version of the company’s sporty express cruiser in as many years, each with noticeable improvements aimed directly at the North American buyer. specifications Beneteau’s U.S. sales manager, LOA: 48'6" Justin Joyner, points out the large Beam: 13'9" raked windshield, completely open Weight: 23,308 lbs. hardtop, and electrically operated Fuel Capacity: 2 x 119 gals. sweeping side glazing and folding Water Capacity: 2 x 53 gals. glass doors, which protect the salon Max Power: 2 x 435 hp from the elements yet are designed Base Price: Contact dealer for a seamless indoor/outdoor beneteau.com experience. A centerline table with cleverly designed folding leaves will draw passengers to the party on-board. Precisely positioned around three fixed bench seats, engineers crafted ottomans like wings to glide inward and form a fourth bench, making the table ideal for cocktails, meals and perhaps even a lively game of poker. Below deck, two cabins, each with private heads, offer privacy and comfort. Subtle decorator touches, like pedestal bowl sinks in both heads, lend an air of Euro desirability. A separate galley, with a full-size refrigerator, is something rarely seen on a boat of this size. As for performance, this was a fun boat to drive. Powered by Volvo IPS, the hull is Beneteau’s Air Step design, which reduces fuel consumption, softens the ride and optimizes turning capability. With 10 of us on-board and 230 gallons of fuel, we clocked just less than 38 mph at 3,700 rpm. Cruise speed is most likely closer to 28 mph — still a very lively lass to dash across the lake to your favorite port.

“
This model gives boaters the features of a boat, a pontoon and a runabout in a single package
”
B
y now we have all experienced the pontoon craze. Over the past few years, pontoon manufacturers have upped their game in quality, comfort and innovation. Performance pontoons have quickly become the top choice for boats on bodies of water both big and small. Features such as triple-tube packages, 10-foot-wide decks and twin engines have allowed pontoons to adapt for use on a variety of waterways. Innovations in the pontoon industry have also allowed boaters to consolidate their boating essentials into a single boat. If you are looking for a pontoon that can do it all, look no further than Premier’s 250 S-Series. The S-Series is not a new model; Premier has been refining the layout for almost 10 years now. It combines the best features that consumers enjoy in pontoons with the performance and windscreen protection of a fiberglass runabout. The concept is simple: Combine the full wrap of a sportboat windshield on the chassis of a pontoon. It sounds easy, but engineers at Premier needed two years of R&D before making this concept a reality in 2008. New custom helms and fiberglass molds were integral in the design. To achieve this concept, Premier’s engineers had to create unique fiberglass molds for the new helms and design a custom glass windshield. The result is a dual helm layout that is now popular on large bodies of water and in cool climates.
Leader in innovation
Premier is always one step ahead. This luxury pontoon manufacturer always introduces new, innovative features to the market, sometimes ahead of their time. The S-Series is no exception. Other manufacturers have recently
44
introduced similar models, proving that a combo pontoon runabout has demand within the industry. “We saw a need to design a boat that protected our customers from the wind and elements,” says Premier’s long-time engineer John Deurr. “The dual windshield concept came from my experience designing Larson sport boats; I knew it would be a success in the pontoon industry.” The S-Series — also available in the 270 configuration — comes standard as an 8-foot, 6-inch beam. Premier’s design also allows customers to opt for the popular 10-foot-wide deck, giving boaters more space on-board to entertain and cruise in comfort. The windshield was designed to keep passengers behind the helm, protected from the wind and other on-water elements. The windshield is ideal for cool evenings or for boaters who want to cruise at higher speeds. For those of us in northern climates, the windshield helps extend the boating season on both ends.
Premier performance
The S-Series is standard with Premier’s popular PTX triple tube package; it gives the boat more flotation and is the perfect platform to support the dual helms and its full wrap windshield. Speeds in excess of 50 mph are possible when properly equipped, although we found the boat very pleasant to run in the 30 mph range while cruising long distances. The PTX triple tube provides a quiet ride that is stable and absorbs the impact of rough water and other boat chop. The ride is superior to that of most small runabouts. Watersports enthusiasts will also enjoy the performance for any on-water activity, including skiing, tubing and wakeboarding. Features for 2017 include an option for Premier’s new

Opulent Deluxe furniture, featuring the softest Heritage marine fabric in the industry; this material makes this pontoon more yacht-like than your traditional pontoon. The dual Liberty helms have also been redesigned for 2017 with Premier’s Beacon 2 in-dash, touch-screen display. This 17-inch-wide color touch-screen gives the captain quick access to all of the gauges and controls, including audio and video. One of my favorite features on our test boat was the optional built-in rearview camera. It gives you on-screen access to what is happening behind the boat and is perfect for watching waterskiers as a spotters’ camera. We also found it useful while anchored to watch the kids swim off the back. The 250 layout with PTX package accommodates 18 passengers, making the model a favorite for boaters who want to entertain the whole family plus friends.
It’s the little things…
The look of the S-Series goes far beyond the windshield. Premier incorporated its new for 2016 Duro rails and custom SS graphics. The new shape gives the S-Series a standout look. A single 250 Mercury Verado powered our test boat. The new auto trim feature worked well and is a must for boaters who want ease of operation. Other popular power options include Premier twin and triple engine applications for the highest performance. The triple engine feature was new for Premier in 2016 and another one of the company’s industry-first innovations on a production pontoon boat. Standard features that we found throughout were high-end components like a new tow bar, full Seagrass flooring and even a refrigerated cup holder at the helm for the driver. It’s the little things that make boating a simple pleasure. Premier has refined the S-Series to be

one of the most comfortable boats on the water. The 250 S-Series is a great performance boat and handles the water of bigger lakes and rivers well. “Any boater enjoys a comfortable boating experience on the water and the S-Series is just that,” says Premier’s president, Lori Melbostad. “This model gives boaters the features of a boat, a pontoon and a runabout in a single package.” As you enter into spring and have time to see new 2017 products at boat shows, take a look at the 2017 Premier S-Series. It has become a hybrid that is popular in the industry. Premier’s products continue to innovate and push the level of what boaters thought was possible with traditional pontoon boats. If you’re a boater looking to combine the benefits of multiple boats into a single package, this could be your next boat. If you’re looking for a boat that allows you some of the comforts that are only found in a traditional runabout, the new S-Series is for you. If you’re looking for something else, chances are Premier builds it as one of their unique 2017 models. ★

NEED A two michigan companies are changing the game for tender lifts and dinghy davits, allowing for hassle-free exploration.
B
oaters are explorers by nature. So when you can’t maneuver safely to the shore of a remote island or get to dinner (without swimming) at a waterfront restaurant without a dock, you likely want a dinghy that allows you to explore at will. Toting that extra vessel along can be challenging; you have to find a way to raise and lower it, to store it on-board and even to climb in. However, two Great Lakes entrepreneurs are helping to make the process safer and easier. That’s true even as boaters push the envelope of tender size. “Tenders have developed into the mainstream and they’ve gotten bigger, heavier and more versatile,” says Gregory Vogel, co-owner of FreedomLift, a tender management solution company based in Grand Rapids, Michigan. “They’re not just a fold-up rubber raft anymore. These are mini boats, not only used to explore but also for watersports. The lifestyle of using a tender enhances the whole boating experience; people are recognizing that.” Companies like FreedomLift have responded to demand with solutions that accommodate the larger weight and length of tenders and personal watercraft (PWC). FreedomLift also keeps the craft high above the waterline and along the rear of the boat so it doesn’t take up valuable deck space. There are increasingly efficient and more affordable market options for those with lighter tenders, as well. Escanaba, Michigan-based Hurley Marine, for example, makes heavy-duty davit systems for tenders less than 725 pounds. The davits that store a dinghy flat atop platforms have become so popular — not just in the Great Lakes but also worldwide — that Hurley Marine has been named one of Michigan’s 50 businesses to watch in 2017 by the Michigan Celebrates Small Business awards program.

Hurley’s ever-evolving system models — some requiring manual lifting, some relying upon an electric winch — target what founder Todd Hurley calls the average boater looking for a better lift solution. The company started 12 years ago with the Traditional Dinghy Davit model, constructed with lightweight marine-grade aluminum, after a friend came to Hurley looking for a hauling solution. At the time, Hurley was running a company that made trailers, and the way they bent aluminum was applicable to davit arms, as well.

by kim schneider
“I came up with a design for him,” Hurley says. “He liked it, and I thought, ‘Maybe I’ll make another and put it on eBay and see what happens.’ Of course nobody knew they needed it until they saw it, and the product kept selling itself. Now we’re selling globally, as well.” The increase in the size of swim platforms was key to the invention’s success, Hurley says, because it made room to store the dinghy on-board. Hurley’s two most rugged systems let you lift and pull the dinghy onto the swim platform for easy storage, then push off for launching. The systems are mounted on the swim platform and are easily installed while the vessel is in the water. The H30 Dinghy Davit uses an adjustable retrieval arm that can stretch to 6 feet if needed for larger tenders, and is designed to accommodate storage of a hard-hulled tender or PWC. Some models, like the Traditional Davit system, require manual lifting, Hurley says. A newer model has both manual and electric winches included to make retrieval easier and less painful (literally). If the swim platform isn’t large enough to completely accommodate the dinghy, a boater can relax the tie-downs so the dinghy remains in place and stable but still allows walking room. To select the best option, boaters fill in a worksheet with questions about depth, length, platform size and length of the tender. Not all davits work with every swim platform, Hurley says, so the company will share the pros and cons of each system after receiving specifications. “One of the reasons our design is great is because the dinghy sits flat on the platform,” Hurley says. “Prior to that, it would be lifted up and leaned against the back of the boat; that means you have to take the motor off. Because it sits flat, you can also use the dinghy for storage. I always like to throw fenders and power cords in there.”
freedomlift tender lifts
Those with tenders and PWCs up to 800 pounds should invest in a system like FreedomLift, which allows a boater to lift their tender with a simple wireless remote control. FreedomLift, founded in 2001 by Vogel and Robert Zwiers, has worldwide installations on boats ranging from 35 to 100 feet. “We call it the ultimate tender lift system because it not only offers the ability to carry a heavier tender, but also you don’t have to give up the swim transom; you mount it on the transom below the platform,” Vogel says. “We’re also able to get the keel of the tender an average of 32 inches above the water.” The ability to keep the tender high above the water helps protect it from damage. When the boat is anchored, getting the tender (and passengers) into the water and to shore is as easy as lowering the boat with the remote until it’s adjacent to the swim platform. Passengers can step in and use the remote control to lower the tender the rest of the way down to the water’s surface. Upon return, lower the system back down again to board. When boaters don’t need their dinghy, they can easily remove and store the lift arms, which weigh about 25 pounds apiece. Boaters also like the system speed, Vogel says; lifting with a crane or davit might be a 30-minute (and sometimes dangerous) proposition, while the FreedomLift is instantaneous. “We think it’s best solution out there to carry a tender of any size within reason and to carry it safely,” Vogel says. “It’s virtually the easiest system on the market to use. You can stand on the swim platform while deploying and retrieving, and with wireless remote controls. One of the things we hear from customers all the time is that it has changed their boating experience.” ★

Following the path to celestial navigation. BY GINA J. GRILLO
W
hat sailor hasn’t dreamt about circumnavigating the globe on the open seas and mastering the craft of celestial navigation — following the path of legendary navigators who, by observing the location of the sun, moon and stars found their way without the use of electronic instruments and technologically-advanced GPS? Although a successful method for thousands of years, celestial navigation represents for some a romantic practice that with time has become obsolete. With a closer look, we find that for all our tech savvy we may have lost a bit of the art of sailing in the data translation; that in spite of our technological advancements, our tech snobbery may lessen our connection to the natural world and our understanding of our position within it. By learning more about this lost art, contemporary sailors are challenging their inner compass and charting a course by looking up — to the sky and to the patterns of heavenly bodies — in order to find direction.
Backup plan
Bob S. Peterson, engineer and founder of Great Lakes Compass in Elgin, Illinois, makes a living providing navigational expertise to Midwest and Great Lakes mariners. “Historically, old mariners would have killed for GPS,” Peterson says. “But even now if your instruments go down, what is your backup plan?” Peterson says celestial navigation relies on redundancy

— on being insightful enough not to trust just one source, but rather to look at data from multiple sources and cross-checking your way to accuracy, because even a GPS can have problems. In 2011, the U.S. Naval Academy reinstated celestial navigation into their training curriculum. According to Peterson, it provides a valuable cross-check, which may guard against the modern threat of computer hacking and the spoofing of GPS signals. The practice of celestial navigation uses references from celestial bodies instead of buoys or other hard references on land or water. “Although the references are different, the result is a line and position on a chart,” Peterson says. “These techniques involve astronomy and time and have been greatly eased by the support and accuracy of digital watches and GPS.”
Navigating the Great Lakes
Although celestial navigation is most useful on a deep-sea sail (one providing an open horizon line), it can also be employed while sailing on the Great Lakes. Since Lake Michigan in particular has a number of similarities to an ocean — both in depth and structural characteristics — it can provide a valuable practice arena for longer international sails. Dirk Lohan is an architect by trade, a self-described life-long sailor and celestial navigator, and also vice president of the Chicago Maritime Museum. Lohan believes the most

important navigational instrument to use on the Great Lakes is a GPS, and suggests keeping two battery-operated units on-board so that one is always functioning. Generally, Lohan says, aids to navigation on the Great Lakes are landforms, like the Sleeping Bear Dunes, the John Hancock Building or any other recognizable structures. “Lighthouses are also useful for visual navigation,” he says, “and in bad weather, lights from lighthouses and radio direction finders to locate radio signals also help.” These methods ensure that a fix (or fixed position) can always be obtained from two good lines of sight. Wherever the voyage, in celestial navigation the crucial outcome is based on a trustworthy fix. A fix, Peterson says, “equals a latitude and a longitude number; thus, for two crossing lines of position from two star sights at twilight, with a new updated latitude/longitude, your dead reckoning (speed, direction and time) can take over from there.”
Understanding a sextant
On the Great Lakes, celestial navigation can be used to accurately assess distance traveled and as a crosscheck for other navigational instruments. Peterson relies on his sextant, especially when he finds himself in a tight spot. “The thing about relying on the backup of a sextant is that you’d better know how to use it, especially before conditions become dire,” Peterson says. Because accuracy in navigation is based on the use of
different systems in order to verify, Peterson believes that in an ideal world everyone would verify their GPS using celestial navigation, rather than verifying with a second GPS. “Compasses are the same way,” he says. “If you take a reading using two compasses and they both read differently, then which one do you believe?” It’s important for mariners to keep their instruments in good working order, and to ensure that even a compass is properly calibrated. Peterson recommends that sailors keep all tools updated and learn to use all instruments, not just those requiring electricity. In the 2013 film, “All is Lost,” Robert Redford plays a man trying to survive after being lost at sea. “There is a troubling scene where Redford’s character, who is already lost, decides to unpack his Celestaire sextant for the first time,” Peterson says. Learning under stress, especially in life or death situations, is not the pedagogy Peterson recommends. His advice is to practice often and ahead of time. An understanding of navigation beyond GPS is not only a safeguard but also enables sailors a more dimensional, physical sense of where they are in relation to a location. Becoming confident using a sextant comes by taking altitudes of celestial bodies and site reductions. “Day to day celestial navigation is fun and gets better with practice,” Peterson says. “Shoot some sites and begin to know where you are in relation to a global perspective, to the solar system or even to the galaxy.” ★

YOHOHO Exploring the lives of Great Lakes pirates who roamed the Inland Seas.
U
nder the cover of darkness, they commandeered ships and slipped out of sight with their cargoes. They occupied private and federal lands in the wild northern frontier so they could steal its precious timber. They trafficked in prostitution, booze and gambling. One even called himself king. The Great Lakes pirates weren’t traditional swashbucklers in the vein of Blackbeard, Captain Kidd or even the fictional Captain Jack Sparrow. They didn’t have eye patches and peg legs, hoist the Jolly Roger or carry parrots on their shoulders (at least as far as we know). But this colorful, rough-andtumble lot were pirates just the same. In the 19th century, timber was big business in the Great Lakes. And in remote forests, not all businesses were legitimate. Those seeking to work outside the law had plenty of room to do so — and plenty of help. “They had real cabals,” says Dr. Richard Boyd, an acclaimed authority on Great Lakes maritime archaeology and maritime history. “It wasn’t just the robber barons who ran the operations. They had quite a crew behind them, from the cutters and everyone who worked at their sawmills, to the captains and sailors who were willing to run contraband, to those in the big markets who were willing to sell it.” They were willing to do anything to protect their illicit activities. Even sink a U.S. gunboat. Commissioned in September 1844, the USS Michigan was the first ironclad ship in the U.S. Navy, and she was the fastest ship on the Great Lakes. She also was a significant threat to the timber pirates who, by the 1850s, were going wild in the region. While the ship was docked in Erie, Pennsylvania, in the summer of 1853, word got out that the federal government was about to send her into the western lakes and put marines

ashore to break up the illegal sawmills and catch any vessels running contraband. “The bad guys were keenly aware of the impact on their nefarious activities,” Boyd says. “They enlisted the largest propelled steamer in the Lakes, the Buffalo, to ram and sink the Michigan.” On May 6, 1853, the Michigan cruised through the St. Clair River into Lake Huron. According to Boyd, a deck watchman saw lights in the distance, and the ship changed course. All too soon, however, it became clear the vessels were on a collision course. Although the Michigan was badly damaged in the crash, she fortunately didn’t even spring a leak. “The crew chased down the Buffalo and likely exchanged niceties,” Boyd notes with a laugh. “They thought it was an accident for the longest time, but numerous investigations later showed it was a plot to sink the only boat that could put a dent in the pirates’ activities. The Michigan came back, and she raised hell.”

Indeed, the ship was involved in the arrest of many timbermen, and the government sent Untouchablesesque agents to shut down pirate operations. They would try to get local help but, as it turns out, many of the pirates were quite popular. “Right up to the sheriffs and the judges, they’d be in cahoots with the pirates,” Boyd says. “These were rough pioneer towns, filled with homesteaders and land-squatters. They thought the forests were inexhaustible — a resource that was theirs for the taking. They viewed the government as a bunch of interfering troublemakers. The agents would put guys in the local jail, and when they came back the next morning, the jail would be empty, with the perpetrators never to be seen again.” Despite the government’s best efforts, piracy remained well known on the Great Lakes through the 1870s and into the 1880s. The pirates soon shifted gears, getting involved in politics. They worked hard to change the classifications of protected trees and the status of open lands. Their heyday would inevitably come to an end. By the turn of the 20th century, there simply weren’t any trees left. “They weren’t just taking the pines for their obvious lumber value,” Boyd says. “They made use of every tree they could. So, they left behind utter deforestation.” And, ultimately, they put themselves out of business.
Kingdom on Beaver Island
Interestingly, the USS Michigan would be a major player in another pirate drama on the Great Lakes in the 1850s. The name “pirate” may be a bit of a stretch when it comes to James Jesse Strang, but this outlier who was elected to the state legislature and became the self-proclaimed monarch
James Jesse Strang was known as the King of Beaver Island.
of an independent and highly controversial kingdom on Lake Michigan’s Beaver Island still captures the imagination. Born in New York on March 21, 1813, Strang joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 1844, was ordained an elder, and at Joseph Smith’s request established a Mormon stake (an administrative group of congregations) in Voree, Wisconsin. After Smith’s murder, a power struggle erupted within the church, pitting Brigham Young and Strang against each other. The former prevailed, while the latter moved his sect to Beaver Island, in northern Lake Michigan, in 1848. For six years, he ruled an industrious kingdom, where followers cultivated farmland, built homes, created roads and other infrastructure — and made powerful enemies. “At the time, Mackinac Island was still the center of all economic activity in the upper Lakes: The American Fur Company, fishing and shipping,” Boyd says. “Then here comes Beaver Island, sitting so close to the Grays Reef shipping lanes. Mackinac Island was very upset.” Although the animosity likely stemmed from economic fears, there was significant prejudice against Mormons at the time. Religion became a believable smokescreen, as did the narrative of piracy. In an October 1885 issue of the New York Times, readers learned about “a gang of marauders, who are LAKELANDBOATING.COM

reported to be Mormons from Beaver Island and who have carried on their operations with a boldness, coolness and desperation rarely equaled in the records of highwaymen.” The story detailed crimes like arson and robbery. Although Strang was arrested many times, this educated lawyer and gifted orator was never successfully prosecuted on what seem to be trumped-up charges. “He was scaring the government,” Boyd observes. “After all, what else could he accomplish?” The world would never find out, as Strang was assassinated in the summer of 1856. Speculation remains that the federal government might have had a hand in it. Enter the USS Michigan. “The Michigan was charged with traveling to Beaver Island for a conference,” Boyd says. “Those angry with Strang met with Capt. Charles H. McBlair in Chicago, and McBlair dilly-dallied on his way north, stopping in Milwaukee, among other things. By the time he got there and sent word to Strang to come aboard, the gunmen were ready.” Thomas Bedford and several others ambushed Strang on the dock, shooting him in the back and the head, and then claimed sanctuary on the Michigan. McBlair took them to Mackinac Island and handed them over to the sheriff; there, they were treated as heroes and promptly disappeared. Strang died of his injuries on July 9, 1856, and the Mormons’ time on Beaver Island came to an end. “Was the captain in on the whole thing?” Boyd muses. “Or did he and the crew just turn a blind eye because they viewed Beaver Islanders as troublemakers and cutthroats? We’ll never know for certain. We do know that Strang’s reputation as a pirate was largely a 19th century media creation.” Nearly a decade after Strang died, Dan Seavey was born on March 23, 1865 in Portland, Maine. Seavey left home and became a sailor at age 13 and served in the U.S. Navy at 18. Moving to Wisconsin, he lived in both Marinette and Milwaukee before charging westward in the Klondike Gold Rush — an endeavor that would prove to be unsuccessful. Poverty-stricken, he arrived in Escanaba, Michigan, at the turn of the century and somehow managed to acquire the schooner Wanderer. While he had some legitimate nauticaltransport businesses over the years, his other activities — involving lumber, fish, booze and women — would bend the law as far as it would go, making him a legend. Boyd first encountered that legend on a visit to Escanaba, where he befriended the elderly boatbuilder Thomas Dale Vinette. Vinette recalled Seavey from his 1920s boyhood. “His name still rings a bell among the old-timers,” Boyd says. “Seavey frequented Escanaba, and the Garden Peninsula was his stronghold.” Fascinated by the stories and realizing that nothing in-depth had been written about Seavey, Boyd embarked on a six-year project to create his book, “A Pirate Roams Lake Michigan: The Dan Seavey Story.” That project

involved interviews, court records, land deeds and even archaeological surveys. “Every time I’d think the story was complete, I’d get a call with information that would take the story in a new direction I never saw coming,” Boyd says with a chuckle. A key piece of the Seavey story is the theft of the schooner Nellie Johnson. After drinking the captain and crew under the table, Seavey stole the schooner and its load of cedar posts, hoping to sell them on Chicago’s thriving black market. The U.S. Revenue Cutter Tuscarora gave chase.

Roaring Dan Seavey
Dan Seavey’s nickname, “Roaring Dan,” inspired Great Lakes Distillery’s Roaring Dan’s Rum.
“Seavey got done in by modern technology, because all the lighthouses and lifesaving stations called each other on the phone,” Boyd says. “The captain of the Tuscarora learned Seavey was in Frankfort, Michigan, with the schooner stashed up the river. So the Tuscarora makes a night run, and there’s Seavey zipping out of the harbor on the Wanderer,, his primary schooner, headed over to fish off Kewaunee, Wisconsin.” The newspapers of the day reported a gripping chase, in which the Tuscarora fired a cannon along the waterline, and a contingent of marines boarded the Wanderer. Yet military records indicate that not only were there no marines and no cannon, Seavey simply pulled over. “It made papers all over the country, but it was yellow journalism,” Boyd says. “If you ever want to know what really happened, look at military records, which were meticulous and quite fussy.” Seavey became the first and only man to be arrested on the charge of piracy. He was put in irons and taken to Chicago. The final charge, however, ended up being “unauthorized removal of a vessel on which he had once been a seaman,” a charge akin to mutiny. It was later dropped. “He got off, which adds to the mystique,” Boyd says, “and thereafter he was known as ‘Dan the Pirate.’” Seavey came to be known as “Roaring Dan,” mainly due to his pugnacious character. Seavey was a heavy drinker and had a notoriously short fuse. He had been a prize fighter for a time, which led to bare-knuckled brawls in countless ports throughout the Lakes. “He was only beaten twice,” Boyd says.

“A Pirate Roams Lake Michigan: The Dan Seavey Story” by Dr. Richard Boyd
In a time when company towns like Fayette, Michigan, kept undesirables at bay by prohibiting saloons and prostitution, they unwittingly provided business ventures for opportunistic men like Seavey. “Their jurisdiction ended at the water’s edge,” Boyd says. “Girls, liquor and gambling were just offshore, where Seavey would anchor his ship. Not much has been written about that. Seavey was a blackguard. “One old-timer told me about Seavey coming into Garden and Fayette, acting like the town marshall,” he continues. “People stood back and watched him, careful of what they said.” After the Wanderer burned in 1918, Seavey bought a 40-foot motor launch. While Seavey did serve with the United States Marshal Service late in his career — ironically, working to curb illegal activities — Boyd notes that such motor launches were popular among rum-runners after American Prohibition started in 1919. Then, when the 18th Amendment was repealed in 1933, the rum-runners went the way of the timber pirates. Time eventually ran out for Seavey, who retired in the 1920s. An Escanaba Daily Press article observed that “this square-chested man, over 6 feet tall, who at the age of 40 was described by an Escanaba woman as ‘the handsomest man I ever saw,’ in the early 1930s lay ill and alone in his bed in an Escanaba boarding house. Few people knew him well, and many people did not want to know him at all. Yet, craving company, he led (our) newspaper reporter to return again and again to hear the story of his life.” Seavey died in Peshtigo, Wisconsin, on February 14, 1949, and the last Great Lakes pirate was laid to rest next to his daughter in Marinette. ★

lthough its sapphire blue water looks far more Caribbean than Canadian, the elegant city of Sarnia enjoys a long and colorful history as one of Ontario’s most inviting Great Lakes ports. The city’s heritage dates back to the 17th century, when Father Louis Hennepin and several other members of La Salle’s entourage found shelter there during a powerful autumn storm, befriended the native people and eventually established a settlement. That settlement, strategically located where Lake Huron feeds into the St. Clair River, grew to become one of the largest and most prosperous cities in southwestern Ontario. The unique coloration off Sarnia’s shore results from a combination of clear water, a natural limestone lakebed and just the right water depth. These factors allow reflected sunlight to project an extended range of blue rays, giving the local area one of its most endearing natural landmarks. “Every time we set up an exhibit at a travel show people always ask why we Photoshop the water to look like the Bahamas,” says Tourism Sarnia-Lambton’s Beverley Horodyski. “We tell them we don’t do anything — that’s just how it naturally looks — yet they never believe us.” Given its location at the junction of Lake Huron and the St. Clair River, Sarnia is one of those rare communities that is both a lake port and river town. The lake port sense is unmistakable, with prominent commercial docks that usually see a few commercial freighters in town at any given time. The river town atmosphere comes from its close association and proximity to the community of Port Huron, Michigan, located directly across the St. Clair River. This dual personality of lake port and river town not only gives Sarnia its unmistakable character, but it also provides the city with an unusually wide range of leisure opportunities that draw boaters from all over the Great Lakes. The area’s defining landmark — the aptly-named Blue Water Bridge, which spans the St. Clair River to connect Ontario and Michigan — can be seen from at least 15 miles out into Lake Huron on a clear day, and even farther at night when its appropriately blue lights shine like a welcoming home beacon. Opened in 1938, the bridge gained a second span in 1997 and today remains among the busiest border crossings between Canada and the United States. When you approach Sarnia by boat from Lake Huron, steer straight for the bridge and you can’t go wrong. The ship channel lies a bit closer to the Michigan side of the lake,

Visit Port Huron No trip to Sarnia would be complete without crossing over to Port Huron, Michigan. Port Huron’s historic downtown borders the Black River and is easily accessible by foot. You’ll find inviting shops, appetizing restaurants and interesting museums. The Blue Water Trolley offers one-hour sightseeing tours, which take you through the heart of Port Huron and along the riverfront for a panoramic glimpse of Port Huron Museum’s Carnegie Center the Blue Water Bridge and the Thomas Edison Depot Museum. Best of all is the fare: 10 cents. The Thomas Edison Depot Museum — located in Great Lakes the beautifully restored Grand Trunk Railway Station Maritime Center directly under the Blue Water Bridge — tells Edison’s inspiring story, including his days spent working on the rail line between Port Huron and Detroit, and displays memorabilia from his boyhood home. The Huron Light Ship Museum, located on the water about a half-mile downstream from the Edison Museum, offers tours of the preserved 1918 light ship, which was still in active use in the area as late as the 1970s. The Fort Gratiot Light Station is a 5-acre campus with seven buildings and boasts the oldest lighthouse tower built in 1829. It offers a 45 minute guided tour, which ends with the “94 steps to the top” tower. Originally the 1904 Port Huron Public Library, the Carnegie Center is now Port Huron Museum’s main building, and is home to local and regional artifacts depicting the area’s rich history. The center is scheduled to reopen this May after an extensive renovation. For current exhibits, activities and hours of operation, visit PHMUSEUM.ORG. Fans of commercial shipping and Great Lakes history should visit the Great Lakes Maritime Center at the mouth of the Black River on Vantage Point. Apart from displaying a range of Great Lakes artifacts, the center is also the home of the BOATNERD.COM website, with substantial libraries of information and Great Lakes lore.

and by 5 miles out you’ll begin to pick up the green and red channel buoys. Stick between them and, as they say, you can’t miss it. Getting to Sarnia from the south is even easier: Navigate upstream on the St. Clair River and you have no choice but to drive straight through town. Regardless of which direction you approach from, boaters must remember that the St. Clair River is one of busiest areas on the Great Lakes for freighter traffic, with thousands of the big boats passing through each year. Always keep an eye out and give them plenty of space.
Events and more
Being part lake port and part river town gives Sarnia a natural energy; it’s one of those places that seems to always have something going on. On Thursday nights from late May though October, the Moonlight Farmers Market is held under the bridge and presents an exquisite opportunity to re-provision with fresh local meat, cheese and produce. Twenty vendors typically participate, with things kicking off around 4 p.m. and lasting until around 8 p.m. From early June through the end of August, the bandstand in Cantara Park on the Lake Huron shore hosts the Sarnia Waterfront Concert Series, where you can enjoy a wide variety of live music and performances. All events offer free admission. For a schedule of upcoming events, check in with city hall or visit the city website at SARNIA.CA. Each July, boaters flock to the Sarnia-Port Huron area for the start of the annual Bayview Port Huron to Mackinac Island Yacht Race. Organized by the Bayview Yacht Club, this event has run continuously since 1925 and remains among the longest freshwater races in the world. Each year it attracts more than 200 boats and kicks off with a grand parade of sailing vessels as they move out to the starting line. Participants who have completed 25 Port Huron to Mackinac Island races are officially referred to as Old Goats, while those who have completed 50 are known as Grand Rams. In August, the Sarnia-Port Huron International Powerboat Festival attracts some of the fastest race boats on the continent as they compete for prizes and bragging rights while raising more than $100,000 for local charities. Each year, more than 30,000 people come out to enjoy the spectacle, which includes a variety of on-land activities, children’s activities and a wakeboard competition. Sanctioned by the Offshore Powerboat Association, the festival is sponsored in part by the massive OLG Casino, located right on the river. In mid-September, Sarnia’s Jazz and Blues in the Village festival takes over McGibbon Park in the heart of the city, attracting big-name entertainers in a casual, intimate setting. Apart from great music and tasty food, it’s a feel-good event with all the proceeds supporting the Sarnia Organ Donor’s Awareness Group.

dockage/marine services Sarnia, Ontario
Most marina facilities are found south of the Blue Water Bridge, just off the river channel. Bridgeview Yachting Centre is about three-quarters of a mile south of the bridge, tucked into a sheltered harbor called the North Slip. The entrance is located just downstream of the prominent OLG Casino. Be sure to keep downstream of the unlit red spar buoy marking the shallows at the tip of Bay Point. Allow the spit at least 100 yards if you can’t quickly locate the buoy. Bridgeview Yachting Centre’s umbrella of marina operations recently undertook major capital improvements. Bridgeview has replaced an additional 20 slips with upgraded docks and services, along with new fuel station decking. Sarnia Bay Marina, three-quarters of a mile to the south, sits in Sarnia Bay where a green flashing light at the end of the stone breakwall marks the entrance. The marina has upgraded its Wi-Fi amenity and added a leisure deck facility. There are a number of companies offering a wide variety of marine services in Sarnia, should you need to re-provision, make a repair or just feel like shopping. Needham’s Marine, located on London Line about a 10-minute drive from the marinas, is a full-service boat dealership offering both new and used boats for sale. Their certified MerCruiser technicians service and repair engines, boats and trailers. Needham’s also has a ship’s store where you are sure to find everything you need for a day on the water. Bluewater Padded Accents, on Water Street near the Sarnia Bay Marina, makes boat tops and upholstery. Bridgeview Marine Services, located at Bridgeview Yachting Centre, offers both on-site and mobile engine repairs, along with propeller and electrical repairs. T&M Marine, also located at Bridgeview Yachting Centre, offers hull repair for both wood and fiberglass boats.
Desmond Marine
Port Huron, Michigan
Port Huron lies south of Sarnia Bay on the Michigan side of the St. Clair River at its confluence with the Black River. It’s easily identified by the permanently raised railway lift bridge at the Black River mouth. Desmond Marine is located on the Black River just beyond the raised bridge, and offers overnight docking along its 200-foot seawall for boats up to 120 feet. They have replaced their entire fueling station with new high-speed dispensers and have significantly increased their fuel tank capacity. A new pavilion has been constructed as an amenity for existing members and an added feature for tourist boat clubs and social events. They also offer engine repairs. Desmond Marine manages all River Street Marinas, farther upstream. Consisting of the Fort Street Dock, Quay Street Dock, Southside Dock and River Street Marina. Tie up at the harbormaster’s office at the River Street Marina for a slip assignment. Bridge Harbour Marina, a little farther upstream, accommodates about 40 transient boats with a maximum length of 80 feet and a maximum draft of 10 feet. There’s a Bob Evans restaurant right at the marina.

Once you’re well fed and hydrated, evenings are a prime time to explore Sarnia’s countless entertainment options. The delightful Imperial Theatre on Christina Street North presents a wide range of world-class performers every week, including live music from classical to rock, live theater from comedies to drama, as well as a range of dance and children’s programs. For an update on what’s playing, visit the theatre website at IMPERIALTHEATRE.NET.
Many visiting boaters don’t consider a trip to Sarnia complete without a visit to the OLG Casino. With more than 450 slot machines, 27 games tables and an excellent on-site restaurant, there’s always something happening at this hub. If you visit Sarnia on the first Friday of each month, you’ll definitely want to make your way downtown for an unrivalled “cultural walkabout” of food, art and fun that lasts long into the evenings. The so-called First Fridays are a local hit and a great way to combine sightseeing, culture and tasty food in a fun-filled evening. If your idea of entertainment leans more toward outdoor recreation, then you’ll really love all that Sarnia has to offer. If you just want to stretch your legs after a few days on the boat, follow the waterfront path that runs all along the face of the St. Clair River. Whether you’re walking, running or biking, you’ll find plenty of rewarding views and interesting diversions.

For a town of 75,000 people, Sarnia has an remarkably large number of exceptional restaurants. Many of the best are within walking distance of the marinas, and a few even offer shuttle service. Sarnia Bay Marina has its own courtesy shuttle fleet, which it uses to take visiting boaters just about anywhere in town. Downtown Sarnia is where you’ll find everything from fine dining to brewpubs and more. Try Sitara Indian Cuisine for tempting Eastern treats, Giresi’s for pizza, Wagg’s for steak, Lola’s for seafood or John’s Restaurant for classic family fare. Afterward, wash it down with a trip to the Refined Fool Brewing Company, which offers a variety of craft beers brewed on-site, with whimsical names like Brouhaha and Antique Peep Show. One of the more popular summertime meals is “street meat,” available near the chip trucks and other mobile concessionaires parked under the Blue Water Bridge. Grab something to go, then take a stroll along the river and enjoy a fine view to pair with your meal. The other alternative is to cook your own meal; Purdy Fisheries, about a five-minute walk from Bridgeview Yachting Centre, sells a wide variety of fresh local fish, the majority of which are caught just a short distance offshore in Lake Huron. They also make awesome fish and chips, which you can enjoy on the outdoor, waterfront patio or take back to the boat.

Given its position where lake meets river, Sarnia has always been an angler’s Mecca. Drop a line just about anywhere and you never know what you’ll catch: From bass and perch to walleye, muskie and pike. Golfers will find several courses in and around Sarnia. The closest one to the marinas is the 9-hole, par 3 course at the Holiday Inn Golf Course. Call 519- 336-4111 for tee times. Whether you visit for a few days or a few weeks, Sarnia and Port Huron never fail to delight with great food, plenty of things to do and a warm, welcoming charm. The beautiful cities rising out of the blue at the end of Lake Huron offer myriad attractions and genuine warmth, making them ideal destinations for Great Lakes boaters. ★

Saugatuck, MI Landmark cottage overlooking the Kalamazoo River.
C
hicago architect Florence Hunn once wrote in the Chicago Sunday Tribune: “That charming, lived-in quality which some homes possess and some do not, comes not from the size of the house, not from the money spent upon the furnishing of it, but rather from the gracious living of those who dwell within it.” Hunn designed the 4-bedroom, 3-bath Saugatuck home known as “Tonawanda Cottage” in 1927. Many revere this cottage as ahead of its time, due to the open floorplan and modern interpretation on an Arts and Crafts style home. Perched on a ridge overlooking the Kalamazoo River and Lake Michigan harbor entrance, this landmark property resembles a treehouse nestled among mature, shaded trees. Tonawanda is an Indian word that means “bend in the river,” and that aptly illustrates the view from the large riverfront patio off the living room. Brown, salt-glazed bricks scale both the exterior and interior of the home, creating a warm, industrial feel. Oversized, iron casement windows in the two-story living room, exposed beam ceilings and a fireplace add to the homey ambiance.
LAKELANDBOATING.COM
The current homeowner has tried to respect and preserve Hunn’s design, including keeping the original clawfoot tub in the master bathroom. A three-season, screened-in porch is off the master bedroom, and stunning river views are showcased on all three floors. One of the biggest draws of this property is its location on the Kalamazoo River, just a quick trip out to the Big Lake. A few steps down from the home is the riverfront entertainment area, complete with a firepit and dock. Best of all, the river is no-wake, so no matter the time of day the water is calm and inviting. This one-of-a-kind cottage blends in nicely with the artistic community of Saugatuck and is located directly across the river from Ox-bow School of Art. The homeowner is a local artist and her metal sculptures can be seen around downtown Saugatuck. Her studio, “The Barn,” is down the driveway in the woods behind the home. This cottage invites creativity and would make an ideal artist’s studio. Own a slice of history at the "Tonawanda Cottage" and get inspired. ★

Wave Pointe Marina A secluded oasis in Door County.
T
ucked away in a weather-safe harbor in the mouth of Little Sturgeon Bay, Wave Pointe Marina is an idyllic weekend getaway for boaters in Door County, Wisconsin. The 124-slip marina is part of the larger Wave Pointe Marina & Resort, which means dockside amenities are aplenty. “We’re a little off the beaten path,” says Marina Manager Chris Sixel, “about 12 miles south of Sturgeon Bay.” Wave Pointe’s secluded location makes it a boater’s oasis. Boaters can take advantage of an outdoor heated pool; an indoor hot tub and sauna; an upscale bathroom and shower area; picnic tables, grills and a fire pit; a dog-friendly dock; and assistance by dock hands during marina hours. The adjoining resort and restaurant are also major draws that make the marina a worthwhile weekend vacation— or at least lunch — destination. “We’re known for our prime rib sandwiches,” Sixel says. “A lot of people stop in for lunch on their boats.” Seasonal slip owners who would rather extend their stay also qualify for room discounts at the resort.
LAKELANDBOATING.COM
Paula Jones, the marina, resort and bar general manager, says the patio at the marina is a great place for visitors to listen to live music every weekend during the summer. “It fills up pretty quickly,” Jones says. “It’s a fun time.” The marina also hosts two annual boater parties: One at the beginning of the season and one at the end. Boaters interested in checking out Wave Pointe’s live music can use any of the marina’s 25 transient slips. Transient boaters who stop by for lunch (for one of those prime rib sandwiches) can also dock free. However, reservations for transient slips are recommended, especially around the holidays. As a BoatU.S. marina, Wave Pointe offers discounts to BoatU.S. members, as well as complimentary child’s life jacket rentals. Jones says the U.S. Coast Guard also usually stops by in June for free boat inspections. Although the marina doesn’t offer repair services, boaters who purchase 25 gallons of gas or more will receive free pump-out service. ★

CLASSIC CRAFTS by Kate Bush
Grande Dame
Grande Dame is a Grand-Craft 24-foot triple cockpit. My parents had the boat built in 1983 in Holland, Michigan, and were the first owners. I then purchased it from my mom after it sat neglected for about 8 years, due to my father’s passing. When I got Grande Dame, she needed some work; I sent out approximately 67 pieces to be re-chromed, and Wayne from Everso Marine Restoration brought her back to like-new condition. The boat has special meaning to my wife and I since we were married in 1983 and had joined my parents on the trip to Holland to take delivery of her. My family and friends have enjoyed many rides aboard her in Lake St. Clair and the St. Clair Flats area. You can most often see Grande Dame around the Harsens Island area. —Mike Riehl, Clinton Township, MI ADD YOUR BOAT
