The Inland Seas Education Association (ISEA) has purchased a new 105-foot, three-masted schooner named Alliance, which will be sailing the waters of Grand Traverse Bay this summer.

The ship’s name will remain Alliance , as it represents ISEA’s partnerships across the Great Lakes. Colleges, universities, nonprofits, K-12 schools, foundations and other organizations partner with ISEA to develop environmental stewards and leaders to care for the Great Lakes. The addition of Alliance increases the number of partnerships around the Great Lakes Basin that can be served during the 2023 sailing season and for years to come.

“Collaboration is at the center of all that we do with strong partnerships developed throughout the

Great Lakes,” says ISEA Executive Director Fred Sitkins. “Alliance is the perfect ship to allow us to seize the opportunity these partnerships present for us… A vessel of this nature is rare and difficult to find and we feel very fortunate that we have been able to secure it for the purpose of protecting the Great Lakes through education.”

Alliance will begin the journey to Suttons Bay in early May. There will be a free public arrival celebration on June 24 as Alliance is escorted into Suttons Bay by Inland Seas.

Blue Innovations Group (BIG) has begun accepting reservations for its R30 all-electric boat. Founded by John Vo, the former global head of manufacturing at Tesla, the company is seeking to revolutionize the boating industry with sustainable marine technologies. The all-electric R30 is a first-of-its-kind powerboat providing customers unparalleled luxury and performance with a cabin that transitions between working and living spaces, a 800-hp dual motor, integrated UI (user interface) and solar charging capability.

GLBBS’ Nikki Storey Awarded Darlene Briggs Marine Woman of the Year

Nikki Storey, president of the Great Lakes Boat Building School (GLBBS), has been named the 2022 Darlene Briggs Marine Woman of the Year by the MRAA Educational Foundation.

As president of GLBBS since 2020, Storey leads a team of professionals committed to providing students with exceptional, hands-on instruction focused on developing the broad knowledge and skills required for careers in the maritime industry. The school’s mission is to “prepare students for rewarding careers in the marine industry” with the vision “to be the leader in marine workforce development.” The school has posted a 100% graduate employer placement rate for the past five years.

A native of Pickford, Michigan, Storey graduated from Lake Superior State University. Her professional career began at her university and later at War Memorial Hospital. Since setting sail at GLBBS in 2015, she hasn’t looked back, quickly rising from business manager to executive director a year later, to her current leadership role. Her goals moving forward are to continue to expand industry relationships with manufacturers, dealers and marinas, as well as to seek more GLBBS students by expanding the facility.

The Darlene Briggs Marine Woman of the Year Award is named after the late Darlene Briggs of Wayzata, Minnesota, who was admired for her tireless dedication to the marine industry. The MRAA and Boating Industry magazine together present the award to honor her memory. It’s presented annually to an outstanding woman who is actively involved in the marine industry at any level. It recognizes long and devoted service, untiring commitment, and the advancement of women in the marine business.

Brunswick Launches Mercury Avator Electric Outboard, Announces Veer Brand

At the 2023 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Brunswick Corporation announced the introduction of its new Mercury Marine Avator 7.5e electric outboard, as well as the creation of its new brand Veer and the first of its models to debut, the Veer X13.

The Avator 7.5e is the first in a series of electric outboards set to advance its electric offerings and provide cost-effective, low maintenance and environmentally friendly options to the marketplace.

“The Avator 7.5e is much more than just an outboard,” says Tim Reid, Mercury Marine vice president of product development and engineering. “We created an entire propulsion system, fully integrated from the advanced controls, props and digital gauges to an all-new mobile app.”

Boasting 750W of power, the motor delivers a similar speed to that of a Mercury 3.5-hp FourStroke outboard, offering clean, quiet power, tiller or remote steering, and a number of features including swappable batteries, a quick-connect mounting system, intuitive controls, and a display to track battery range and level.

Grand Craft Completes

Eighth Boat Under New Ownership, Launches New Website

Wooden boat manufacturer Grand Craft Boats has recently completed its first full year in its new, state-of-the-art manufacturing facility. Grand Craft relocated to Genoa City, Wisconsin, in late 2021 from Holland, Michigan. In 2022, Grand Craft sold a total of eight luxury mahogany wooden runabouts for customers across the country. Saugatuck’s Iconic Gap Filler Radar Listed in the National Register of Historic Places

Constructed in 1957 in Saugatuck, Michigan, the iconic Saugatuck Gap Filler Radar was built high atop the Mount Baldhead sand dune to address the threat of an air attack of Soviet planes during the Cold War. This iconic but now defunct radar has recently been added to the National Register of Historic Places, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation announced in January.

“The iconic radar ball in Saugatuck is a well-known community landmark and is visible for miles along the shore of Lake Michigan,” says Michigan’s Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer Martha MacFarlane-Faes. “A key aspect of the National Register program is to document and honor places that are associated with events that have made a significant contribution to the broad patterns of our history. The Saugatuck Radar and the groundbreaking technology it once employed was an important piece of our national defense infrastructure during the height of the Cold War.”

Find Those Leaks!

How to detect and resolve onboard leaks.

The sudden appearance of water in the bilge or a mysterious fluid in the engine compartment should be cause for alarm. After all, if you don’t know what’s leaking, it could be anything — possibly even a warning sign that some vital component is on the verge of failure. Leaks are your boat’s way of telling you that something is going on, meaning it’s imperative to diagnose and correct them as soon as possible.

When tracking down leaks, patience and careful observation are key. Color and consistency of the leaked fluid can also point to likely sources, coolant and transmission fluid leaks being a good example.

Tool-wise, when leak hunting you’ll need a good source of lighting, such as a bright flashlight or drop light. Depending on the type of leak, other possible items could include paper towels, a wet/dry vacuum, a small inspection mirror, children’s felt markers or sidewalk chalk, and perhaps a can of Soft & Dry underarm deodorant (more on this in a moment).

Bilge leaks

The first thing in tracking down a bilge water leak is determining if the water is coming from outside the hull or the potable water system. Frequent cycling of the freshwater pump is a good indication of the latter.

If it’s not a freshwater system leak (unless you’ve run aground or otherwise damaged the hull) likely suspects include any hull penetration below the waterline: Shaft glands, transducers, through-hulls, strut fasteners, etc. Sailboats can also have issues with leaking keel bolts, while powerboats can leak around trim tabs, swim platform mounts or U-joints and bellows (for those with sterndrives).

If the leak only occurs while underway, the engine raw water-cooling system may be the suspect, as well as stuffing boxes for the shaft or rudders. Traditional compression type stuffing boxes for the engine shaft should typically leak no more than three to four drops per minute while underway; however, they shouldn’t leak at the dock. Rudder posts may not leak a drop while in the static position, but gush water while underway. Look for tell-tale signs of corrosion or verdigris (in the case of bronze hardware), which typically signifies a leak.

Tracking down bilge leaks

The first step in locating a bilge leak is to pump or vacuum the section of bilge where the leak seems to be

coming in, dry it as much as possible, then place folded paper towels in the bilge fore and aft of the area. Wait a bit, then check to see if either towel is damp.

If one of the end towels is wet, then the adjacent bilge area is suspect, meaning you simply move to that area and repeat the process. Work through each of the bilge compartments to locate the one where the water is actually entering.

Once you’ve narrowed it down to one section of bilge, there are a couple of ways to determine where the water is coming from. One option is drying the bilge and covering it with paper towels, then simply watching to see which ones get wet first. Another is drawing a few lines along both sides of the bilge with a children’s water washable felt pen or sidewalk caulk. Check back after a bit, look for runs, then work your way up the hull until you find the source of the leak.

Engine / generator exhaust system leaks

Exhaust system leaks are a serious issue, not only because of the potentially catastrophic engine failure they can herald, but also due to the possible introduction of CO into the interior of the vessel (a situation with potentially deadly consequences).

Dry exhaust leaks (between manifold and block, for example) can often be found by feeling for escaping exhaust or holding tissue paper near the suspected area and watching for movement.

Wet leaks in manifolds, exhaust risers, mufflers, etc., are normally accompanied by corrosion, stains or “running rust” originating at the leak itself. Lacking the above signs, another option is to clean the area completely (non-flammable aerosol disc brake cleaner works well), then spray on the deodorant mentioned earlier and let dry. Once dry, the deodorant leaves a uniform coating of white powder that not only makes a leak easy to spot, but is also easily removed.

Engine fuel system leaks

For suspected fuel leaks at the engine (this works for any other engine leak as well) clean and dry the area beneath the engine, then cover with paper towels or oil absorb pads and check for wet areas (the engine may have to be running to generate the leak).

If you suspect fuel fitting leaks, clean the connections with alcohol and tie toilet paper or paper towel on each fitting. Go grab a cup of coffee, then come back and look for evidence of leaking. ★

What’s new with JL Audio’s marine audio systems.

For some, enjoying time on the water also means listening to music. Fortunately, there are many good choices of high-quality marine audio systems available to boaters. Let’s take a look at a few new options from JL Audio, one of the best-known brands of high-quality marine audio.

The M6 line

Manufacturers are constantly innovating and upgrading their audio system components, including the speakers. JL Audio has a range of updated equipment that could fit any boater’s needs, including two lines of speakers, the M3 and M6/M7 lines, both manufactured in the U.S.

The M6 series of speakers are JL’s premier line and are available in 6.5-inch coaxial (75 W continuous), 7.7-inch coaxial (100 W continuous) and 8.8-inch coaxial sizes (125 W continuous). These are becoming more “standardized” sizes as manufacturers such as Fusion have speakers in similar sizes allowing for replacement without having to modify the speaker cut-out. The M6 speakers boast a long-extrusion woofer design. This helps the speaker to overcome wave, engine and environmental sounds more easily. JL’s design philosophy is that it is not just power getting to the speakers but also the amount of air molecules the speaker can push that allows for an excellent mid- and low-range volume over other environmental noise.

Another interesting feature of JL’s latest M6 speakers is the use of treated silk dome tweeters with increasing sizes as the size of the speaker increases. This new material holds up well to the environment without corrosion, and JL claims it has better high-frequency sound than traditional metal mesh tweeters do. They claim the sound is less harsh and easier on the ears when played loudly. M6 speakers are available in a Sport Grill configuration or Classic Grill.

If space for speakers is an issue onboard, then fewer speakers but a larger diameter might be a viable option. Going up in size, the 7.7-inch speakers have 48% more cone area than the 6.5-inch speakers. The 8.8-inch speakers have 34% more speaker area than the 7.7-inch and 98% more speaker area than the 6.5-inch speakers. The newer M6 series speakers also include newly designed and placed crossovers built into the speaker housing rim that add durability, robustness and sound quality.

Subwoofers

Rounding out JL Audio’s M series speakers are the 8-inch (200 W RMS), 10-inch (250 W RMS) and the M7 12-inch (600 W RMS) subwoofers. One thing to ponder when considering one of these is whether they are going to be mounted in an enclosure or in an infinite baffle (open bulkhead or similar). In order to get the correct amount of bass for great quality sound, you will need to select the specific model for the area it is being mounted into. Fortunately, JL offers its 8- and 10-inch subs in both configurations. The 12-inch M6 sub is only available in an infinite baffle design (IB models). If you do need an enclosure, you can make your own or purchase the speaker with a JL-designed fiberglass enclosure. These models are known as their W models (e.g., M6-10W).

LED trends

Another trend in today’s marine audio speaker market is built-in LED lighting. JL Audio uses patented Transflective LED Lighting. They designed the weatherproof cones in its M6 speakers to allow the LED lighting to shine through, giving the speaker an even, almost painted look. The user can select the color and intensity they desire or have it cycle through the RGB range. If you want one color, the speakers can be hard-wired to that color, or you can add an optional controller to run through the various options or have them cycle through at varying speeds and intensities.

Smaller M3 system

The JL Audio M3 series is a scaled-back version of the M6 series and is representative of top-end speakers in its price category. Available in 6.5inch (60 W RMS) and 7.7-inch (70 W RMS) configurations, also in Sport Grill or Classic Grill, these speakers are designed for lower power systems or for those looking for great sound at a lower budget.

More options beyond JL Audio

JL Audio is not the only company producing high-quality marine speakers. For example, Fusion (now owned by Garmin) has a complete top-rated marine stereo system which includes its all-new Signature Series 3i marine speakers and subs, as well as its Fusion XS line of speakers. These high-quality speakers are also well worth looking into when planning a new onboard entertainment system. ★

Radio Protocols

Securité, Pan Pan and Mayday

Although recreational boats under 66 feet aren’t required to have a radio onboard, why would you go out without one? With a VHF radio, it’s easy to contact other boaters and marinas, get weather information, and receive or inform the Coast Guard of possible dangers and emergencies.

Whether handheld or built-in, the VHF radio transmits a signal 25 times stronger than a cellphone, whereas a cellphone’s reception may be spotty or lacking. It can also transmit longer distances, between 20-30 miles. Newer VHF models have a Digital Selective Calling (DSC) feature that notifies the Coast Guard immediately while triangulating your latitude and longitude. Turned on, it automatically selects channel 16 and should remain there unless hailing other boats or shore stations before switching to another channel.

However, a VHF radio is only good if it’s turned on and used properly.

Operating procedure

Hold the microphone one inch from your mouth. Push the talk button and speak slowly. Calling another boat, say the boat’s name twice, your boat’s name, and “over.” Release the button. Wait two minutes. Try again. No response? Wait another 15 minutes before retrying.

For example, “Osprey, Osprey, this is Scottish Delight, over.”

“Scottish Delight, this is Osprey, switch to channel seven-nine, channel seven-nine, over.”

“Osprey, switching to seven-nine, over.”

Switch to an unoccupied working channel like 68, 69, 71, 72, 78A ( or 79 and 80, which are shared with commercial traffic in the Great Lakes) to continue the conversation. Since there are only a few channels to use, it’s important to keep the channels free for emergency use.

This call procedure is also used for requesting a tow, calling a local marina or another shore station.

DSC calling

Some channels have restricted use, like channel 70, which carries the DSC emergency signal feature on newer VHF radios. When the DSC button is pressed, a piercing alarm is activated, area boats will hear it, and then it automatically switches to channel 16 for voice communication with the Coast

Guard as the GPS location is determined. Boaters hearing the alarm should wait for the Coast Guard to respond. If they do not, other boaters should acknowledge the call and attempt to call the Coast Guard or try to give aid if physically able.

In addition, there are three levels of emergencies that a boater should notify the Coast Guard on channel 16: Securité, Pan Pan and Mayday.

Securité

Securité (say-cure-it-tay) is for navigation safety warnings of hazards like a sunken object, immediate weather alerts or unsafe boat movements. Say, “Sécurité, Sécurité, Sécurité, Osprey. Go to channel 6 for the safety message. Out.” Then, announce the message.

Pan Pan

Pan Pan (Pahn-pahn) is an urgent call that’s not immediately threatening to life or property, but assistance is required, such as the inability to operate a vessel or being lost in fog. For example, “Pan Pan, Pan Pan, Pan Pan. This is powerboat Osprey, Osprey, Osprey. Mile marker 10, lost power and the engine won’t start. Two adults onboard, no injuries. Need assistance, over.”

Mayday

Mayday asks for immediate assistance in lifethreatening situations, like an engine fire, a man overboard or medical emergencies, and Mayday takes priority over all other radio calls. Use the same call procedure as Pan Pan and be prepared to answer questions dealing with the type of emergency, medical situation, number of passengers, location, boat description and type of help needed. The Coast Guard will immediately respond.

Last words

The radio isn’t a toy. It’s for operational use only, not social chit-chat. Teach or remind onboard visitors how to use the VHF radio for emergency purposes. If you are unsure of how to use it properly, read the radio’s manual and take America’s Boating Course or another one like it with America’s Boating Club (AMERICASBOATINGCLUB.ORG) or the Coast Guard Auxiliary (CGAUX.ORG). Innovative PVC solutions for a lakefront near you.

When I was younger, my parents had a lake house in rural Vilas County, Wisconsin. This was the real Up North experience, from the call of the loons to the modest dock and a pontoon boat affectionately called Leaky Maroo.

Everyone had a dock — for swimming, fishing, tying up the family boat and gathering to watch the sunset. Most of the older ones were made of wood.

These days, however, wood isn’t the only option. Innovations in design and materials have opened the doors to more possibilities, which means lakefront property owners have decisions to make.

It’s a decision worth making carefully, as you’ll likely discover your dock becomes as important to your water life as your boat is. To this day, when my dad sees a photograph of our old Harris Lake vista, he’ll sigh and say wistfully, “My dock.”

A new legacy

months. Aluminum is a viable alternative, as it’s low-maintenance and lightweight, but it also can be expensive.

There’s concrete, of course, and composite. And there’s PVC.

Boyne City, Michigan-based Bulmann Dock & Lift embraced the PVC concept in 1998, when it introduced the Legacy Dock. This affordable, maintenance-free seasonal dock is made of PVC vinyl with lightweight, anodized aluminum side rails that won’t rust or corrode.

“The white vinyl conducts minimal heat, so it’s cool to the touch even on a 100-degree day,” says Chris Binger, Bulmann’s director of sales and marketing. “We use a UV inhibitor so it won’t become brittle or discolored, and it’s easy to clean. You just need a power washer or deck brush.”

Binger compares the modular dock design to using Lego pieces. You can rearrange the pieces however you wish, and a track system allows you to attach accessories such as dock boxes and kayak racks.

Wood docks have their downsides. Permanent ones are at the mercy of winter storms and ice, they are heavy, and they are expensive. You have to drive pilings, build and install the deck pieces, and attach the railings.

You can choose a seasonal wood dock, but weight can still be an issue. Some companies won’t do installations or removals simply due to the weight involved.

Plus, wood needs to be maintained, which means regular cleaning and upkeep, as well as appropriate storage during the winter

“You might not know exactly what you’re going to need five years down the road,” he explains. “You can reconfigure the dock segments to create an on-water patio, or you can create space for new watercraft. How you use it is up to you.”

And when fall arrives, you can store the dock outdoors.

“It’s stackable and has a small footprint, so it won’t be an eyesore,” Binger notes. “Some people put the stacked sections in their garage, but it’s not necessary. I would just recommend banding them together so winter storms won’t tip them over or blow them around.”

Dream for the next generation

Although a Legacy Dock weighs less than a wooden counterpart, its wooden decking is screwed together in one piece. That means hiring a crew is necessary for installation and removal.

DIYers have their own solution now, however. At press time, Bulmann was preparing to launch a new dock that you can install in the spring and remove in the fall by yourself — without waders or a wetsuit. It’s called the Dream Dock.

install each segment without ever getting into the water. Each section hinges into place.

“Removal is waterless as well,” he continues. “You just lift the sections out.”

The new dock is available with options. One is venting, in case you’re in an area with heavy wave action. Another is marine board, which provides the natural look of a wood dock without the maintenance (or the splinters).

The Dream Dock is expected to have the longevity of its predecessor. Binger says many of the original Legacy Docks from 25 years ago are still in active use.

“Younger property owners who are newer to lakefront living have been really open to these docking solutions, because they want the maintenance-free aspect,” he adds. “Older people

aren’t sure, because it’s not how they did it at the family cottage, but then they find out that these docks are durable and less hassle.”

Timelines are favorable too. A permanent wood dock might take a year or two to complete, whereas seasonal docks can be purchased and installed right away. The Legacy Dock is in stock now, and the Dream Dock can be built to order with less than a month of lead time.

“Here in the Boyne City area, we’ll start installing docks in mid-April,” Binger says. “Down at the Michigan-Indiana border, they’re a month ahead of us! So the season is almost here.”

Tenders can sometimes be a forgotten class of boat. People often get so wrapped up in their larger, primary boats — spending untold amounts of time picking out interior fabrics, electronics packages and hull paints — that the smaller boats become an afterthought. Blackfin 252DC

Dual purpose.

Blackfin is a well-known and well-respected brand in the fishing world, famous for zippy and capable center consoles that excel at hauling in gamefish from grouper to tuna. But as popular as center consoles are, they are not for everyone. Some boaters prefer a layout with a little more heft, particularly as they begin to take their young families out on the water with them. To that end, Blackfin now offers the 252DC (dual console). Cobias are one of the world’s most prized (and fun) gamefish, so you know if a boat company is named after the species, it’s going to be a serious fishing package ready to take on all challenges. Such is certainly the case with Cobia’s 280 Center Console.

The 280 is an improvement on the 277, one of Cobia’s most popular models. It’s notable for its features list, which is massive for a boat in this class. For one thing, it has a front-entry head, which is not something you see on center consoles in this size range. A stylish hardtop covers the amidships portion of the boat, including a three-sided windshield that features a vent and electric wipers for inclement weather and over-the-top chop. Good things come in threes.

Few builders in the world can boast the pedigree of MJM, which was founded by the Johnstone family in 2002 — the same Johnstone family with multiple members in the National Sailing Hall of Fame. The MJM 3 is also a bowrider, which was a wise choice as it greatly expands her entertainment space, offering three separate areas instead of the more traditional two. Guests can expect a dry ride when enjoying the U-shape seating in the area, thanks to the extra flare added to the boat’s bow. This feature is part of the “Carolina Downeast style” that MJM has coined since its recent move to a North Carolina facility.

I’m going to start off by offering a public apology. When I sea trialed the new Tiara Yachts EX 60 recently in Miami, Florida, I may have been a little tough on Tiara’s director of marketing and communications, Whitney Vishey. I told Vishey that, as I know the brand well and have been on several of its yachts over the years (actually captained a 43 from Florida to Rhode Island solo, but that’s another story), I was going to go through this new offering very closely to make sure it lived up to the Tiara Yachts name.

The short story is that I was schooled by Vishey and her team. This EX 60 is worthy of the Tiara name and your undivided attention. There is so much the Tiara development team brings to the surface, as well as some hidden things you wouldn’t know about, that makes the EX 60 an exceptional vessel.

SILENCE IS GOLDEN

My first impression as we got the 53,000-plus-pound craft up to speed was how quiet it is when running. Not just a few decibels below yelling, but genuinely silent. Asking how Tiara accomplished this, Vishey explained they contract with an outside company to analyze the “N,V, H” (noise, vibration and harshness) in order to rectify issues and make the yacht more comfortable on all levels. J&A Enterprises audited the yacht’s operation and recommended changes. In one case, they provided guidance on the hull bottom structure and stringer grid design to reduce transmitted engine noise. They also helped to design the acoustic insulation in the engine room, including a recommendation for Tiara to insulate the engine room’s hull sides.

With the multitude of methods employed, including noise isolation, redesigned insulation, frequency targeting and identifying noise generation components, the EX 60 has got to be one of the quietest, smoothest and enjoyable yachts I have ever been on. This is worth the price of admission.

The proof is in the numbers, and through J&A’s and Tiara's collaboration, the sound level at cruise is 71 db at the helm, and only 72 db at wide open (all doors and windows closed). Even with the aft door open, the prevalent sound is the rushing water exiting the wetted hull.

LOOK AROUND

What you can see around the EX 60 is spacious comfort from stem to stern. Design the cockpit for your cruising/living needs by selecting from the breakfast bar with ottomans or forward- and aft-facing seating module in the mid cockpit. Aft cockpit selections include the adventure module with rod holders, cooler boxes and livewell or a lounge module. These are great options that can enhance your cruising experiences. Let’s not forget about the side L-lounge seats, walk-through side boarding gates and access hatch to the engines. Adding to the cockpit’s overall acreage are the port/starboard hullside terraces that fold down from the gunwales. Not only does it add foot space, but also adds access points to the water and enhances sea level visibility from the lounges. Toss in the standard 60-inch hydraulic lift swim platform with recessed PWC chocks, disappearing staircase and ladder and you’ll have a great beach area. Overhead protection is courtesy of a Makefast Marine powered sunshade. Walk-around decks allow for easy transit to the bow lounge with a huge sunpad, reversible pad/table and sturdy grabrails. There’s underseat storage for lines and fenders, and concealed ground tackle compartment for the Lewmar windlass and 70-pound Lewmar anchor. Nice is the full deck Herculan synthetic teak flooring for good footing and low maintenance.

THE HIGH LIFE

As Tiara’s largest yacht, its focus not just on cruising but livability is highlighted by the interior layout and options. From the starboard helm, the operator has great visibility all around thanks to the two-pane tempered curved windshields, large side windows and glass aft doors. A helm side door is great for ventilation and accessing the deck for line handling. This is an easy boat to single hand.

At the helm is the Volvo Glass Cockpit with twin Garmin multifunction displays, push buttons and throttle. On the double-wide Stidd helm chair’s right armrest are the joystick controller and Garmin GRID remote. No more hunching over the console to access the controls. Sit back in the electrically adjusted seat and enjoy the ride!

Another great idea from Tiara, and one I don’t recall seeing previously, is a multifunction display at the portside companion console. Allowing for an extra set of eyes to monitor house systems, navigation tools or boat functions, this takes some anxiety off the operator while allowing for a second person to assist in the boat’s operation. For the serious cruiser, this is a must-have and an item that should be offered on other cruisers.

Keeping the crowd together is a portside C-shape settee with a flip-down, high-gloss teak table. To starboard is a low-profile galley with four under-counter fridge/freezer drawers, a two-burner Kenyon induction cooktop, a Samsung microwave/convection oven, quartz countertops and a long stainless grabrail. That’s a nice touch.

Entertainment choices are from the starboard side hi-low actuated 55-inch flat TV and Fusion Apollo multi-zone stereo system with JL Audio components and speakers.

DOWN BUT NOT OUT

Via a center staircase are the three staterooms. Midship is a full-beam primary suite with headroom between 6 feet, 4 inches to 6 feet, 9 inches, an innerspring center queen pedestal berth with compartment storage, a starboard settee, an optional stacked washer/dryer, cedar lockers and drawers. The highlights in the primary suite are the carved teak wood inlay at the headboard, which adds a touch of flair. Additionally is a slide-out drawer with an extending top that can be used as a desk, suitable for a laptop. With hullside windows and opening ports, the primary becomes another destination to be used any time. A private head has a shower stall, a VacuFlush toilet, a vessel sink and a defogging mirror.

Forward is the VIP stateroom with a queen berth, cedar lockers and a carved teak/Ultraleather headboard. There’s a private entrance to the day head. A third stateroom has twin berths that slide together for a full-size berth. Each stateroom is fully finished with carpeting, TVs, recessed lighting, wood trim, Ultraleather and fabric coverings.

POWER UP

Giddy up is from twin Volvo D13 1,000-hp diesel engines. Our sea trial’s running numbers very closely match to Tiara published specs so feel confident that their numbers are real. At wide open, we experienced a robust 40 knots, so the speed is there if needed. Dial back to 1800 RPM for a 25.3 knot ride, burning 52 gph for approximately a 300 nm range. Pull back more to 8.6 knots, 15 gph and 350 nm range. There’s range for the long cruise and speed for the short hauls.

I looked from top to bottom, bow to stern, and within crevices and really could not find issues with the semi-customizable Tiara Yachts EX 60. For weekend stomping to extended cruising, this is an exceptional yacht. Perfect for loopers or lakers. Tiara Yachts has certainly upped its game. BACK COVE 372

An American-built, single-engine cruiser that delivers performance and classic style.

The Back Cove 372 stands out at the dock when compared to other boats for all the right reasons.

Something about a dark-colored hull and that simple lobster boat look with a well-defined cabin and a long trailing cockpit is appealing. The Back Cove presents a nice contrast to the ultra-modern styling of other new boats that look to me like some combination of sports car and spacecraft with more windows in the hull than on deck. While I appreciate light below decks, hull windows as big as my front door scare me. I tend to like boats that look like boats, and hulls that are more hull than window. After many years of boating, I have come to respect practicality. Sometimes simple is better, and I’m impressed when a boat builder like Back Cove combines the pragmatism of a single diesel engine with the elegance of Downeast styling.

That does not mean that the Back Cove 372 is old fashioned — far from it, as the boats are built with innovative composite technology and packed with modern amenities. The boats just aren’t frivolous. Like the boat builders in Maine that build them, Back Coves are serious. Their time-honored styling not only looks good, but the design has been proven to perform and to endure in all types of conditions.

EASY OPERATION

The Back Cove 372 is powered by a single Cummins QSC8.3 600-hp diesel that provides efficiency and range (Volvo Penta D8 is an option). I found dockside maneuverability effortless using the Side Power joystick-controlled standard bow and optional stern thruster on our test boat. The boat is set up to be easily handled by a couple; with two of us onboard, it was simple, with well-placed cleats, reasonable side decks, steps and stainless railings.

An opening side window beside the helm eases communication while docking. Visibility is excellent from the helm and matching companion seat through three large windshields, the center of which opens, all surrounded by blacked out mullions for glare reduction. The aft bifold stainless and glass doors both connect the salon to the cockpit and provide good sightlines aft from the helm whether open or closed. Controls and electronics are accessed in a convenient helm pod from the Llebroc Ultraleather adjustable helm seat. An illuminated compass, USB charging station for phones, tablets and gadgets, and a helm drawer for binoculars are nice touches. Three footrests provide comfortable positioning, and the 20-inch Stazo wood grain wheel adjusts.

I throttle up and accelerate smoothly into the open water to an impressive wide-open speed of 33 mph. I then settle back to 2500 RPM where

a fast cruise of 26.5 mph uses 21.1 gph yielding a modest 1.26 mpg. At this speed the efficiency of the single diesel yields a range of 340 miles based on 90% of the 300-gallon capacity. This means the Back Cove 372 has both the speed and range to make lake crossings safely and easily. At trawler speeds the range increases to over 1,000 miles, and with an air draft of 12 feet, 6 inches (with radar mast up) the boat is ideal for long passages through the Erie Canal or Great Loop. The Seastar hydraulic steering is lively and responsive, and the boat gently heels into turns. The Back Cove 372 feels comfortable and secure at the helm, and with a 22,100-pound displacement tracks evenly and cuts through wakes without notice. The hull is a modified V forward with camber from the bow to the transom creating a curved surface that softens the ride. The prop is in a tunnel and partially protected by a keel, skeg and rudder, creating a reasonable 3-foot, 7-inch draft that allows for Bahamas and other low-water cruising.

Like the lobster boats they are loosely derived from, Back Coves are designed to handle the rugged conditions of coastal Maine where they are built. Hull bottoms are cored with PVC foam, vacuum infused and reinforced with a resin-infused foam core stringer system. Resin-infused balsa coring is used in the deck, which should not be

off-putting, because the way they isolate the wood eliminates issues. End grain balsa is scored into a fabric-backed grid and infusion encapsulates each cell with resin to prevent water intrusion. Cleats, rails and fittings are attached through solid sections, so fasteners don’t penetrate the coring. Back Cove boat builders use balsa purposefully because it maintains its strength in the long stretches of deck allowing for thinner panels that reduce weight.

A COMFORTABLE INTERIOR

The Back Cove 372 has a comfortable, fully climate-controlled salon lounge area with a fold-down table aft of the helm. A 32-inch LED Smart TV flips from the ceiling and pivots for better viewing from the salon seating. In temperate weather, bifold doors fully open to join the salon to the cockpit, where plentiful seating both inside and out is ideal for entertaining or simply relaxing.

The fully equipped galley is a few steps down from the salon under the light of the windshield, and features refrigerator/freezer drawers, an electric two-burner Kenyon induction cooktop, and a deep stainless steel sink with cover. A cut-out in the Corian countertop cleverly pulls out so you can wipe debris directly into the garbage can below. This mid galley provides convenient access to both the helm and the seating and

gathering areas aft. Windows and hatches with screens keep the salon and galley light and airy and provide cross breezes when opened.

The primary cabin forward has a queen island berth with reading lights, an overhead hatch, a cedar-lined hanging locker, and plenty of drawers and storage. A handy ensuite door provides access to the head, which has a Tecma electric freshwater toilet and a separate shower compartment with a molded-in bench. The second private cabin is great for children and single adults. The limiting factor here is the bed, at 3 feet, 10 inches wide, makes it suitable only for couples of a smaller stature. The salon table also converts to create a larger bed for a second couple.

The interior of the Back Cove is brightly decorated with American cherry, which, when combined with fine upholstery and quality fixtures, creates a lively nautical feel. “Teak and Holly” soles add to the ambiance but are made of more practical, textured high-pressure laminate.

If you are looking for a stylish and practical cruiser that can be easily handled by a couple and has the range and durability to cruise anywhere, the Back Cove 372 deserves some serious consideration. Finely crafted and ruggedly constructed in Maine, I like this American cruiser because it looks like a boat, handles like a boat, and delivers a lot in a compact, timeless design. ★

Wouldn’t it be great if you could hang out in the cockpit with the rest of the gang and leave the driving to someone else? A new collaboration between Raymarine and Avikus aims to allow just that by bringing self-driving boats one step closer to reality.

If we’re all completely honest, then we can admit we’ve all experienced it. The sun is shining, it’s a gorgeous day, and everyone is hanging out in the cockpit having fun while we’re stuck at the helm, feeling more like a chauffeur than one of the gang.

If we’re all completely honest, we can also admit there have been times when we felt less than confident bringing the boat back to the dock. Maybe it was a holiday weekend with too many people in the water, or a gusty wind making for tough handling at low speeds. Or maybe the boat was new, and we hadn’t yet become comfortable with it. Regardless, there isn’t a skipper alive who hasn’t felt apprehension when approaching the slip at some point in their lives.

If we’re all completely honest, then we’d all agree it would be just wonderful if there were times when the boat could simply drive itself.

That day may be a lot closer than we think.

A new collaboration between two technology giants aims to make self-driving boats a reality — not off in the distant future, but by the middle of this decade.

South Korean manufacturing conglomerate HD Hyundai raised a lot of eyebrows last year when it announced it was testing autonomous navigation and docking technology for commercial ships, which will allow them to operate without crews.

What’s more, the company revealed that it had set up a whole new subsidiary — called Avikus — to develop a consumer version of the new technology platform, allowing recreational boats to also simply drive themselves.

Avikus debuted its NeuBoat self-driving technology last October at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, taking marine journalists on demonstration rides across the busy harbor on a boat piloted by its computerized captain. What’s more, the company further announced it was collaborating with electronics titan Raymarine to jointly develop the platform and bring it to market.

Bleeding edge technology

The Avikus platform utilizes a combination of technologies including cameras, GPS and Lidar to assess on-water navigational challenges in real-time, and maneuver around them without human intervention. Its deep learning and sensor fusion algorithms are organized as either navigation assistant systems (NAS) or docking assistant systems (DAS).

The NAS element functions like a next-generation autopilot, creating and maintaining an optimal route for safe navigation while not just watching out for, but actively avoiding boats, buoys or other potential collision targets. It allows boaters to enjoy their time on the water without having to actually operate the vessel or understand the meaning of buoys, markers and other navigational aids. If desired, users can monitor the system’s progress on an Augmented Reality (AR) dashboard screen, which identifies potential collision threats and indicates risk level using different colored informational boxes. Or, it can be monitored remotely with a mobile device, so the owner never really needs to leave their guests lounging in the cockpit or up front on the sunpad.

Avikus DAS technology takes over at the slip, applying an integrated cognitive system that permits the boat to dock itself using the Avikus 3D surround view system and a collision warning alarm. The system automatically compensates for current, tides and even the effect of wakes from passing boats to guide the vessel cleanly into its slip.

Before coming to Fort Lauderdale, the company successfully tested the platform with a fully autonomous navigation of the six mile long Pohang Canal in Pohang City, Korea. The waterway, with an average width of just over 30 feet, is known as

a complex and challenging navigational environment with heavy boat traffic and extremely congested ports. The Avikus self-driving test boat easily navigated through the maze of traffic, correctly assessing potential collision threats and proactively taking appropriate action as a licensed captain stood at the helm ready to take over in the event of a failure, but without ever having to actually touch the controls.

The system Avikus demonstrated at the Fort Lauderdale show was even further refined, reflecting additional advances made since the Pohang Canal test. But what really raised eyebrows at FLIBS was the announcement that Avikus had entered into a new collaboration with Raymarine to integrate the Avikus NeuBoat platform into Raymarine’s suite of navigational products, and jointly explore future platform development.

“This is groundbreaking as it will result in future boaters being able to have all their navigational equipment from Raymarine combined with Avikus NeuBoat, the next generation autonomous navigation system,” says Avikus CEO Do-hyeong Lim. “No other technology has changed the boating experience the way NeuBoat will. Boating on the open water is often seen as the ultimate experience of freedom, but what kind of freedom is it when you must constantly worry about collisions, safety and navigation? With NeuBoat you can experience the true freedom of the open sea on your own terms.”

A true partnership

For its part, Raymarine was equally positive about the potential for developing the Avikus platform further, and particularly through the potential integration of its own radar technology and Lighthouse cartography.

“Raymarine strives to provide the most innovative, user-friendly and reliable electronics to make boating accessible and safe for everyone,” says Raymarine General Manager Gregoire Outters. “With Avikus’ proven solution in autonomous commercial marine, this will pave the way for our engineers to work closely together, to deliver this exciting new technology to our leisure boat customers.”

Outters says the collaboration between the two firms represents a true partnership, with both companies contributing considerable intellectual property to the venture.

“Raymarine has a history of over 80 years of developing marine electronics,” he says.

“Over the last five years we have built significant experience developing assisted docking systems with our first system launching in 2019, we now offer four different systems with Docksense Control and Docksense Alert both offering either stern-only or full 360 protection around a vessel.”

Perhaps even more importantly, he notes, the collaboration provides an opportunity to incorporate technology not presently integrated into the platform.

“We are in the very early stages of our partnership with Avikus, and we are exploring ways that we can work together with Avikus and other suppliers of this exciting technology, as well as developing our own solutions in house and within the wider Teledyne Technologies group,” Outters says.

”Radar is an obvious solution to extend the limited range of the lidar sensor used within the system. Raymarine also offers precision heading sensors which are critical to the system,” he continues. “As part of the Teledyne Technology family we are also able to supply a wide offering of visible and thermal imaging cameras. 4G marine router can provide a method of connecting remotely to the vessel. We have the critical technologies to develop and improve autonomy, including some of the best sensors within Raymarine and Teledyne: Radars, cameras, sonars, autopilots and AIS.”

While Raymarine and Avikus work to perfect the NeuBoat autonomous operating system, it is clear that the age of self-driving boats will soon be here. While we can always choose to turn the technology off and run the boat ourselves, won’t it be nice to at least have the option of letting someone else do the driving?

If we’re all completely honest, the answer has to be a resounding yes. H

But it isn’t just affluence and civic pride that give Oakville its Côte d’Azur feel. Like Monte Carlo, Nice and Cannes, Oakville enjoys a powerful connection to the water, and the natural harbor that provides its raison d’être.

Oakville overlooks Lake Ontario at the mouth of Sixteen Mile Creek — so named because it lies precisely 16 miles from Hamilton and the same distance from Toronto. It’s easy to spot from the water, just look for Oakville’s two concrete piers — the eastern one has a flashing red light mounted atop a cylindrical white tower with a bright red cap. A green spar buoy, located about 100 yards off the end of the western pier, marks the beginning of the dredged entry channel. From here, it’s tough to miss the word “Oakville” set in large white letters on the hillside above the western pier.

The approach into the harbor is completely free of obstructions, and over a soft, sandy bottom. Water depth in the harbor is normally somewhere around eight feet, with a buoyed channel leading upstream. There are four principal marinas, with the majority of the boats appropriately moored Mediterranean style.

The excellent facilities in Oakville Harbour stem from its previous life as a busy commercial port, one which did a substantial business in shipping fruit, wheat and — as its name suggests — lumber. Business flourished through the early part of the 19th century. A ship builder set up shop on the western bank of 16 Mile Creek,

followed by other industries close by, including a large granary. In 1834, Oakville’s bustling harbor had reached such a level of activity and importance that it was declared an official Port of Entry into Canada.

But by the mid-1800s, Canada found itself mired in a deep recession which, in conjunction with the arrival of the railroad, led to the rapid decline of Oakville as a meaningful industrial port. Facing the prospect of economic collapse, the town began pitching itself as a holiday destination to residents of nearby Toronto and Hamilton, touting its lack of industry as a plus, bringing clean air, quiet streets and dirt-cheap land values. The plan worked, and Oakville quickly became the fashionable summer abode for dozens of Canada’s wealthiest families. Rich industrialists took advantage of the low land prices to build sprawling estates in town, as former commercial properties along the waterfront gave way to opulent residences and large hotels with expansive verandahs offering panoramic lake views. Known today as Historic Oakville, the old town was offi cially designated a Heritage Conservation District in 2013.

The abundance of estate lots and original period architecture in Historic Oakville has long been prized by Hollywood fi lm

producers, and the town continues to serve as a principal filming location for major films and television productions. If you should experience a sense of déjà vu when walking its stately avenues, it could well be because the surroundings are indeed familiar — at least to your television screen.

Today, Oakville’s unique charms attract more than 1.4 million tourists every year, many of whom visit specifically to enjoy its stately heritage sites. A self-guided historical walking tour leads visitors through the historic district, where scannable QR codes explain the significance of various buildings and landmarks. Of course, free public Wi-Fi — available throughout downtown Oakville — ensures a fast and reliable internet connection anywhere.

Retail therapy

While Oakville is justifi ably proud of its heritage, the town’s present-day attractions provide even more reason to visit — especially with most of the goodies located within easy walking distance of the docks.

Lakeshore Road, which parallels the shoreline about two blocks from the water, and the streets immediately around it on the east side of 16 Mile Creek represent Oakville’s downtown core. Wandering here

is always a delight for the senses, with a wide assortment of restaurants and their enchanting sidewalk cafes tempting visitors with a diverse variety of tastes and aromas, offering choices from burgers to pubs to fine dining, with menu options ranging from steaks to seafood to Mediterranean, Japanese and Middle Eastern fare. Dining alfresco is very much the Oakville way, whether it’s that first morning coffee and croissant, or a splurge dinner at one of the town’s more than 200 restaurants.

If you prefer to provision and cook your own masterpiece back on the boat, you’ll find downtown Oakville offers a shopping experience second to none. Here you’ll find independent butchers, bakers, grocers, fishmongers, pastry shops and dessert stops — many of which have been there for generations — providing everything needed to restock the boat’s galley. You’ll never touch a grocery cart, but you will come away with exquisite ingredients for truly memorable meals, and an experience like no other.

If your appetite leans more toward shameless self-indulgence, then you’ll certainly feel right at home with a selection of luxurious spas to explore. Book a massage, enjoy hot stone therapy, kick back with a pedicure or simply relax and allow your cares to float away as you leisurely ponder activities for the evening and the coming day.

Because no port visit is complete without a little retail therapy, be sure to take time to wander Oakville’s mind-boggling array of specialty shops scattered throughout the downtown, presenting all manner of goods

and curiosities from hand-made fashions to sustainable housewares to original art. And if you’re shy of space on the boat, fear not — most shops will be more than happy to ship your new treasures home, or anywhere in the world.

If you’re in the mood to be entertained, then only steps from the docks you’ll find the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts, which presents more than 250 performances of music, drama, comedy and dance each year. Opened in 1977, the Centre comprises a 470-seat auditorium and a 120-seat studio theater for more intimate presentations.

There’s no shortage of outdoor entertainment throughout the summer, as the town hosts a wide variety of festivals and special events, including the Oakville Family Ribfest, the Film Festival, the Oakville Jazz Festival, the Summer Concert Series, Kerrfest, the For The Love of Arts Festival and more. There are further shopping and dining opportunities on the west bank of 16 Mile Creek as well, and particularly as you walk north of Lakeshore on Kerr Street into the heart of Kerr Village. There you’ll fi nd an eclectic mix of retail, coffee shops, bakeries, bistros and more, all with a distinctly funky vibe. Once again sidewalk cafes abound, inviting a stop to refresh and relax while planning one’s next adventure.

Stretch those legs

As much fun as it is to simply wander the magnifi cent, tree-lined streets of downtown Oakville, stopping here for a snack and there for a browse, Oakville is an active community with no shortage of opportunities to really stretch one’s legs. If you have bikes onboard the boat, here’s your chance to put them to use.

Continuing east on Lakeshore beyond the historic downtown leads into an enchanting residential neighborhood where exquisite homes with stately, manicured lawns are nestled between the oak groves. The area — known as the Gold Coast — is home to some of Canada’s most expensive and exclusive real estate, with one eye-popping mansion after another. This includes Chelster Hall, a 47,000 square-foot palatial estate situated on 10 acres of waterfront heaven. Sheltered behind a gatehouse and two sets of iron gates, the estate even includes its own private chapel.

Pedal long enough and you’ll come to Gairloch Gardens, home of the Oakville Galleries, a not-for-profi t art museum overlooking Lake Ontario. Its extensive permanent collection of paintings, drawings, sculpture and mixed media focuses on the work of prominent Canadian artists, and is considered among the finest of its kind.

Oakville is a city of parks, and you’ll spot plenty of them as you wander about. Erchless Park, located on the east side of 16 Mile Creek just above the piers, is what remains of the once 960-acre Erchless Estate, home to the Chisholm family, Oakville’s original landowner. Today, the

house operates as the Oakville Museum, presenting a diverse collection of objects reflecting the history of the town from its establishment to the present day, including costumes and textiles, fine and decorative arts, ethnological artifacts and Chisholm family related materials.

If you’re looking to have some fun on the water instead of on the bikes, then this is the spot to break out the dinghy, the kayaks or a stand-up paddleboard. The serene waters of 16 Mile Creek provide a well-protected playground for paddling, particularly as you venture farther and farther upstream, past the Oakville Powerboat Club at Hillmer Park, and leave the houses behind. A silent approach allows the opportunity to spot a variety of wildlife including raccoons, beavers and red foxes, along with a wide range of birds, from tiny hummingbirds to great blue herons and the occasional bald eagle.

When paddling about in the deeper water near the harbor, or in Lake Ontario proper, keep an eye out for fast-moving watercraft. Oakville is home to the Burloak Canoe Club, a popular competitive rowing group that can count no less than three Olympians — Adam van Koeverden, Mark Oldershaw and Larry Cain — among its members.

Fishing is also popular among local boaters. The clear waters right off the Oakville waterfront provide good action with smallmouth bass and walleye right through the summer. But things really get festive from August through October as coho salmon, Chinook salmon, brown trout and steelhead return to the waters off Oakville in anticipation of their fall migration up 16 Mile Creek to spawn. The Great Ontario Salmon Derby — one of Ontario’s most popular fishing contests — offers participants the chance to take home all sorts of prizes from tackle to trucks, attracting anglers from across the region each year. The derby, which celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2022, is a beloved local institution, and it’s hard to not get caught up in the excitement, even if you’re only in town for a few days. A substantial local charter fleet makes it easy to join in the fun, providing all the gear and know-how so you can focus on reeling in the catch.

It all started in a gas station. In the mid 1960s, Mark and Matt Felhofer’s father, Fran, sold his first boats out of his father’s fueling station. Over the next 50-plus years, Fran’s company, Bay Marine, moved and grew at the same pace as boating in Door County. In 2021, the brothers purchased the Sturgeon Bay Yacht Harbor, and the current Bay Marine Yacht Harbor was born.

Eleven months of rebuilding and refurbishing resulted in a world-class marina that holds its own with the best. Despite a year that threw a fire and hurricane at the Waukegan and Fort Myers locations, respectively, Bay Marine is looking to the future, embracing opportunities to better serve the Bay Marine family, and carrying on its reputation that has earned it a spot in Boating Industry’s Top 100. ★

1937 21' Chris-Craft Sedan.

In 1937, Chris-Craft produced the first enclosed sedan utilities. DreamCatcher was delivered to E.J. Mertaugh in Hessel, Michigan, by truck on June 5, 1937. Insured by Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company for $1,174, she was powered by the 55-hp, 4-cylinder engine and was put into service as the new boat to deliver mail and groceries to the islands in the upper St. Mary’s River. The hardtop was a big advantage since the boat was used everyday — the river was not frozen.

In 1941, the 4-cylinder engine was replaced by the new CC 95-hp, 6-cylinder K engine. During WWll she had large numbers painted on her bow, 38U392. This allowed her to get fuel during rationing, with the U designating an official delivery boat. After being replaced as the delivery boat, she went through several owners and jobs, including charter fishing and moving barges. She wore the name SUSIE-Q on her transom at that time.

We purchased the boat in 1994 after it had been out of service for about 10 years. She was taken to Cadillac Boat Shop for a complete restoration. This was a 10-year project with many upgrades including a new CC283/350 8-cylinder engine. It was at this time the name DreamCatcher was applied to the new transom.

DreamCatcher has been enjoyed by family and friends during the following years. She was used as a water limo for a wedding and 10 years later for the family to celebrate their anniversary. DreamCatcher transported members for a 50-year high school reunion. The grandchildren have made many memories that will last a lifetime.

DreamCatcher has and still does win awards at antique boat shows. This includes Skippers Choice at the Les Cheneaux Antique and Wooden Boat Show and Best Restored Utility at the 2010 ACBS show in Bay Harbor, Michigan. It is now time for DreamCatcher to have a new caretaker to enjoy her as much as we have.
