Looking Forward!

The March issue is always a fun one to edit, because as I sit here at my computer, wrapped in several layers while watching a snow storm out my window as the temperatures plummet, I get to read all about spring cleaning, summer cruising destinations and new boats debuting at boat shows. It’s a nice escape from reality, and really gets me looking forward to the upcoming boating season! One great place to visit while we wait out this winter weather is the new sauna along Duluth’s waterfront. Cedar + Stone Nordic Sauna brings the Finish tradition of sauna to the Great Lakes, offering visitors a chance to relax in the hot sauna, followed by a cold plunge into chilly Lake Superior (p. 22). I’m adding this to my must-visit list!

Another new thing you’ll certainly want to check out: Autonomous boating (p. 36). This new technology, now being offered by several manufacturers including Garmin, Volvo and Yamaha, allows users to effortlessly dock their boats without ever touching the wheel. Welcome to the future of boating!

Seakeeper Unveils Two New Gyrostabilizers

Maritime Community Bestows Inaugural Lifetime Service Award

Mike Wills, a long-time contributor to the Traverse City, Michigan, maritime community, was honored as the inaugural recipient of the Michael Wills Maritime Community Lifetime Service Award. This award was created to recognize an individual’s extended service, contributions and dedication to Traverse City’s local maritime initiatives. The award was sponsored by the Great Lakes Sailing Company and presented at an event at the Grand Traverse Yacht Club in December 2023.

Wills founded Scuba North, Sail North, The Harbor Boat Shop, Harbor West and several developments on the Boardman River in downtown Traverse City. He has a passion for fostering children’s education as a founder and board member of Traverse Area Community Sailing (TACS) for more than 25 years. Wills has served on the board of the Watershed Center, Grand Traverse Bay and played a key role in the creation of the Discovery Center & Pier and continues to serve on that board.

“Mike’s volunteer service to so many maritime programs has made a real difference in the maritime community and beyond!” says Mike Smith, former TACS president.

Seakeeper has launched two new gyrostabilizer models — the Seakeeper 10.5 and the Seakeeper 14 — providing stabilization for boats 50 to 68 feet in length.

The Seakeeper 10.5, ideal for boats 50 to 62 feet, builds upon the success of the Seakeeper 9 but offers 17% more angular momentum in 23% less volume.

The Seakeeper 14 bridges the gap between the Seakeeper 9 and the Seakeeper 18 and is ideal for boats 55 to 68 feet. Compared to the Seakeeper 9, the Seakeeper 14 offers 56% more gyroscopic power in 4% more overall volume.

The Seakeeper 10.5 and Seakeeper 14 are both equipped with an innovative asymmetric flywheel design for reduced height and optimized performance, a space-saving singlecylinder brake system with enhanced reliability and corrosion-resistant components.

The Seakeeper 10.5 is expected to begin shipment in July 2024 with a retail cost of $124,900. The Seakeeper 14 will follow, beginning shipment in September 2024 with a retail price of $149,900.

Sea Ray is adding to its SDX Series with the debut of the SDX 270 and SDX 270 Surf. Available in sterndrive and surf configurations, the new SDX 270 models accommodate a wide range of onwater activities in a 27-foot package. The yacht-certified vessels offer large social zones, powerful propulsion, substantial storage and premium amenities.

Michigan Boating Industries Association Welcomes Workforce Development Director

The Michigan Boating Industries Association (MBIA) has hired Kelly Kerchoff to the new workforce development director position.

“In the last few years, workforce development has grown to be the MBIA’s top priority,” says MBIA Executive Director Nicki Polan. “Cultivating and maintaining a workforce, especially marine technicians, is essential for our members and our industry to keep boats on the water. The workforce development director position is new for our association, and it is necessary to elevate the work already underway. We are excited to watch the programs grow with Kelly’s expertise and ambition.”

The director will be responsible for creating career awareness, building and maintaining relationships with counselors and students, and helping to grow, support and promote post-secondary marine education programs and professional development. Ultimately, MBIA hopes to build a program to invite aging technicians to become teachers for the next generations.

Kerchoff joins the association with more than 15 years of experience in education and has an MA in teaching and learning from Madonna University.

Mercury Marine Unveils Two New Electric Outboards

Mercury Marine debuted two new electric outboards, part of the Avator family, during CES 2024 in Las Vegas in January. The new Avator 75e and 110e electric outboard are Mercury’s most powerful electric outboards yet and are slated to be released for sale later this year.

“This is a big step forward for Mercury and a great way to kick off Mercury’s 85th anniversary year,” says Patrick Reinke, category manager for electrification on the Mercury eSolutions team. “We’ll soon be able to offer boaters a complete family of low-voltage, allelectric propulsion systems capable of powering boats ranging from small inflatables and aluminum fishing boats all the way up to pontoons and small fiberglass runabouts.”

The 75e and 110e outboards generate 7,500W and 11,000W of power at the prop shaft, respectively. They integrate with the complete Avator propulsion system and offer a full-color digital display.

MarineMax has entered into an agreement to acquire Williams Tenders USA, the Pompano Beach, Florida-based premier distributor and retailer for UK-based Williams Jet Tenders LTD, a manufacturer of rigid inflatable jet tenders for the luxury yacht market. The acquisition is expected to close by March 31, 2024.

Avikus and AquaSport Boats announced at the 2024 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) that they will collaborate to create the world’s first autonomously equipped recreational sport boat company. This collaboration promises to deliver a line of center- and dual-console recreational sport boats, under the Twin Vee brand, that incorporates advanced navigation assist and autonomous functionality. The first models will make their debut this summer, with additional models being introduced in late 2024 under the Twin Vee, Forza and AquaSport brands.

Yamaha Introduces 350-hp 4.3L Offshore Outboard

Yamaha’s newly designed F350 4.3-liter V6 Offshore Outboard features engine block and gearcase upgrades.

“Boaters asked for it, and we delivered. The F350 is the perfect big power, lightweight option for a wide variety of applications,” says Ben Speciale, president of Yamaha U.S. Marine Business Unit.

The F350 boasts larger intake and exhaust valves than the F300 and uses the same diameter electronic throttle valve as the 5.6L V8 XTO 450 to maximize air movement. A new crankshaft offers a longer stroke, enabling more torque at lower speeds. Boaters can sync all this power with Yamaha’s Digital Electric Steering (DES) and exclusive Thrust Enhancing Reverse Exhaust.

The new F350 cowling incorporates a water-draining air duct, while the new cowling exhaust port combined with the new stator fan keeps everything under the cowling cool. Now offered in Pearlescent White, Traditional Gray or new Classic White, the F350 will be available this spring.

Laketown Township Beach Adds 3.17 Acres

Laketown Township, located near Holland, Michigan, has added more public land around its beach with the purchase of 3.17 acres. The land does not touch Lake Michigan but has a view of the water.

“It is important to acquire as much land as possible near Lake Michigan for our residents,” says Township Manager Al Meshkin.

There are no plans for the property yet, but the parks commission will work on plans over the next few years.

“We have been working to acquire land near the township beach since 2016. This is our fifth, and largest, acquisition,” Meshkin says.

In total, including the original land acquired in 1926, the township park spans 7.6 acres. Laketown Township Beach is the township’s oldest park.

2024 Minneapolis Innovation Award Winners

Announced

The NMMA and Boating Writers International (BWI) announced the winners of the 2024 Minneapolis Innovation Awards, recognizing groundbreaking new consumer marine products, at the Discover Boating Minneapolis Boat Show in January. This year’s program received the largest amount of entries since its inception in 2018.

In the fiberglass fishing boat category, Skeeter Boats received the Innovation Award for the WXR 2060F.

Cedar + Stone Nordic Sauna

A floating sauna is a hot new addition to Duluth’s waterfront.

Beginning in the late 19th century, thousands of immigrants from Finland found their way to Duluth, Minnesota, which was called “Little Helsinki” for the number of Finns who settled there. They brought with them their tradition of sauna — the heat and steam method of bathing that has been a part of Finnish culture for thousands of years.

Duluth’s “Finn Town,” in the area now known as Canal Park, was once home to about 10 community saunas. Over the decades they disappeared, but today, authentic sauna has returned to the waterfront district thanks to Justin Juntunen, founder and CEO of Cedar + Stone Nordic Sauna. His ancestors were among the early Finnish immigrants to the area, and he grew up in Esko, a farming community about 20 minutes south of Duluth and the Lake Superior shore. At home and at the family cabin, says Juntunen, “Sauna is a cultural tradition. It’s a way of life.”

After living and working elsewhere, Juntunen and his wife decided to settle in Duluth, but first made a trip to Finland. They experienced sauna in the country where there are about 3.3 million saunas for a population of 5.6 million — where it is so revered that “Sauna Culture in Finland” made it to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list. Most memorable of their experiences was a sauna on a raft floating in the Baltic Sea. That sparked an idea that evolved into Cedar + Stone, a company that would be both a builder of sleek, “heirloom quality” custom

saunas, and the creator of authentic, traditional, wood-fired public saunas, including one floating on Juntunen’s beloved freshwater sea, Lake Superior.

A stress-relief company

“Not many people understand sauna,” says the man on a mission to establish Duluth as Sauna Capital of North America. His approach to increasing appreciation of sauna — what he calls the cultural gift of sauna — is through education; sharing its many health benefits and social aspects; getting as many people as possible to experience authentic sauna; and making it relatable. Believing that everyone wants less stress in their lives, he calls Cedar + Stone a stress-relief company.

“When I begin to talk about stress and anxiety, people begin to care — then they become interested,” Once most people experience real sauna, Juntunen says, they are usually hooked. “We destroy stress and anxiety all the time.”

Hot, cold, rest, rehydrate, repeat

For most Americans the word sauna conjures up images of a quick trip to a lukewarm gym or hotel facility that may be best described as a poor imitation of the true experience. Genuine sauna is a leisurely and mindful ritual that requires sitting in a small room heated to a high temperature with steam created by tossing water onto rocks piled on the stove (preferably wood-fired, but electric will

do). After a short session in the heat, there’s a blast of cold — either under a shower, a plunge into cold water, or even a roll in the snow — followed by rest and a refreshing beverage. For full effect, the cycle is repeated a few times.

This is the sauna practice that Juntunen introduced when he launched his business in 2020, starting with two land-based saunas. Just six weeks later, COVID-19 forced their shutdown. The pandemic was good for the custom-build side, however, as more people wanted to bring sauna into their homes. Eventually, Cedar + Stone was able to reopen the public facilities, which are located next to the Pier B Resort Hotel at Duluth’s harbor.

The original compound consisted of a five-person private sauna, a public sauna for 10, a platform for taking a plunge into Lake Superior’s chilly water, a changing cabin and a deck for post-sauna relaxation. In December 2023, Juntunen fulfilled his long-time dream of a floating sauna and opened a handsome structure atop a 36-foot workhorse barge. Moored alongside Cedar + Stone’s other facilities, the craft’s sauna accommodates 10 people and has a rooftop deck and platform for making the cold water plunge between hot sessions. Juntunen is working to achieve certification to be able to add excursions for the fully operational vessel.

“Believe it or not, the Coast Guard has no regulations for a floating sauna,” he says with a laugh.

WHAT TO EXPECT

• Each Cedar + Stone 75- or 90-minute sauna session comes with a guide who lights the stove, introduces the process and talks about the history and benefits of sauna. The visit includes towels and tea and water for relaxation and hydration. All ages are welcome, and the guide offers information for families about accommodating children. “When the weather gets bad, it’s often better sauna weather and a good time to go sauna,” Juntunen says. “It’s safe harbored there. It’s sturdy, resilient and full of sisu,” referencing the Finnish word for strength and determination.

“The barge took 12 years of my life to make a reality, and now people are enjoying it,” he says. “It’s such a magical opportunity. It’s difficult to find floating saunas in North America. It’s novel and unique and beautiful. People really want that experience.”

How to install a fuel flow meter to monitor fuel consumption.

Considering the price of fuel, boat owners are constantly searching for ways to wring as many nautical miles as possible from every gallon. In addition to maintaining a clean hull, staying on top of routine engine maintenance, and transferring excess weight ashore, the installation of a fuel flow meter is another popular option. Let’s take a look at what they are, how they work, and why they cause OPEC nation members to mutter and curse while shaking their fists at the sky.

What they do

Fuel flow meters allow you to monitor engine performance by monitoring fuel consumption. Utilizing fuel line sensors, they measure fuel flow and calculate the amount of fuel consumed by your engine, providing you the information in gallons per hour, total gallons consumed and (when integrated with GPS) nautical miles per gallon. Meters range from relatively simple analog units to more complex, digital displays, such as the USMP-11 Fuel Flow Meter offered by US Marine Products (USMARINEPRODUCTS.COM).

After establishing a consumption baseline for your vessel under normal operation, conditions that reduce fuel efficiency (such as a bent prop or fouled bottom) become more readily apparent. This allows you to correct problems before they worsen, while saving fuel that would otherwise have been wasted prior to discovery.

Early detection is the key, particularly as many of the problems that rob your engine of fuel efficiency are not readily apparent. Something as innocuous as a failed spark plug can increase fuel consumption in gasoline engines by over 20%, with no perceptible change in engine performance.

Fuel usage data provided by a flow meter can also help find your boat’s operational “sweet spot” by determining the most efficient trim, running speed and weight distribution. Many owners find that simply increasing or decreasing their running speed a few hundred RPM can increase their range by as much as 20%.

Fuel flow meters can provide additional safety as well — readings can alert you to potentially dangerous fuel leaks, while also telling you just how much further you can safely travel, reducing the risk of running out of fuel.

Installation

Installation of a fuel flow meter is fairly straightforward; however, it does require basic mechanical skills and the ability to follow detailed installation instructions. If this describes you, then go for it; if not, hire a competent marine mechanic to do the job.

If you decide to do the installation yourself, be prepared (depending on the model) to cut fuel lines, drill mounting holes for gauges and run wires. Having a mechanic review your installation once completed is also a good idea.

Flow meters have typically utilized mechanical measurement tools (such as turbine or positive displacement units) in the past to monitor fuel flow; however, many newer units use ultrasonic sensors to transmit flow rate data (eliminating the need to cut fuel lines).

Flow meters are rated for different sized engines, so selection of the correct flow meter for your particular engine(s) is crucial. Most flow meter manufacturers provide engine model selection guides on their websites to assist with selection, as well as the option of calling the company direct for assistance.

Some modern multifunction displays also offer the option of installing a fuel flow meter as an add-on sensor (a great option if helm space is limited). The Garmin GFS 10, for example, allows you to use

compatible Garmin chartplotters to display fuel flow rates and fuel levels, eliminating the need for a dedicated fuel flow meter display.

Installation tips

While you’ll want to follow the specific installation instructions for your particular fuel flow unit, here are some general tips for most any installation.

• Mount the sensor in a solid, secure and horizontal location. It should be as low in the fuel system as possible, away from water, heat and any moving parts.

• Fuel hose should be kept straight and be properly supported on either side of the sensor installation. Avoid kinks and sharp bends, which can generate turbulence and inaccurate readings.

• Use large radius hose bends and minimize the number of 90-degree elbow fittings.

• Use marine-grade stainless steel hose clamps for hose connections. Install double hose clamps where possible, but only if a sufficient length of hose barb allows it.

• If in doubt, consult an expert and have them verify the installation once completed.

General safety tips

• Follow all safety precautions when working with fuel and fuel systems.

• Wear appropriate safety equipment, including safety glasses.

• Work in a well-ventilated area, as fuel vapors and liquids are extremely flammable and explosive.

• Secure power before conducting any electrical work. Disconnecting the negative battery cable is also a good idea.

Final thoughts

While there are some initial outlays in time and expense to install a fuel flow meter, the savings will start to add up quickly — more so if it allows you to avoid even one “out of fuel” experience (and the associated cost of a tow). It may take a few years to recoup the cost of your fuel flow meter installation, but you’ll definitely reap the benefits each time you leave the dock, both in terms of fuel savings and peace of mind.

Installing a fuel flow sensor is straightforward and within the ability of any competent DIYer.

When the Fish Bite

Catch more fish with Lowrance’s ActiveTarget 2 fishfinder.

here is no question that fishfinders increase your odds of hooking fish. New live sonars take that probability to a whole new level. This technology allows you to more easily locate fish and watch their reaction in real-time when you present a lure or bait. These advanced fish sonars can’t make the fish bite, but they certainly increase the odds of a plentiful catch.

Live sonars from manufacturers such as Garmin, Humminbird and Lowrance are changing how people fish. We will look closer at Lowrance’s latest version of this technology, the ActiveTarget 2.

Skeptic to believer

I got to experience all that Lowrance ActiveTarget 2 has to offer last year — among all the excitement and bass-catching activity — at the Redcrest Tournament in North Carolina. On that lake, I changed from a skeptic to a believer in this exciting technology.

While not directly participating in the tournament, I was able to spend time on the water on various fully equipped tournament boats and learn the sonar’s capabilities from some of today’s best bass anglers. I was surprised to locate not only structure but also identify fish, their size, and even species around that structure in a short amount of time. I could see casts and bait presented to them and how they reacted (or, more often, didn’t react) to that bait. In some cases, by changing lures and presentation the fish could then be seen striking the bait while we simultaneously felt the satisfying tug at the end of the line.

Some people call the utilization of this type of sonar “video game fishing,” as the angler spends a lot of time looking at their multifunction display, searching for fish, and trying to coax them to strike. This moniker is understandable, but the effectiveness of this technology is undeniable. For those who enjoy a relaxing day fishing, searching for fish by blind casting, this technology might not be for them. But it’s great for those who are tournament fishing or want to spend more time hooked up than casting.

Multi-view sonar

The Lowrance ActiveTarget 2 comprises a module and transducer that connect to either the Lowrance HDS Pro, HDS Live, HDS Carbon or the Elite FS. The module adds very high-quality live sonar capabilities to the multifunction display.

Depending on mounting orientation, the transducer can produce one of three views in the display. The first is the Forward View, allowing you to see in front of the boat. When you identify fish in this setting, you simply cast in the direction the transducer is pointing, and you will get the lure or bait in front of the fish. The next view is the Down View. Unlike the cone of a traditional sonar, ActiveTarget 2 Down View allows viewing in more detail what is underneath your boat and slightly forward of the transducer. You can see fish swimming and moving about and even watch your bait drop to the fish. Once there, you can see how the fish react to your bait in real-time. The third view is the Scout View. This view lets the user see a live overhead wide forward view, giving great situational awareness of what is happening in front of the boat. This is mostly used to search for structure over wide areas. Each view has advantages, and learning to read them is not instantaneous but is not difficult.

Benefits

One huge advantage of going with Lowrance’s ActiveTarget 2 is adding another transducer and enjoying combination screens of two different views simultaneously, the Scout View in an ultra-wide format or a full 180-degree view front to back in one image. If a second transducer is not an option in the budget, mounting the transducer to a trolling motor or one of the increasing varieties of dedicated steerable mounts will work. All you must do is quickly and easily change the orientation of the transducer to get a different view.

Another benefit of going with the Lowrance ActiveTarget 2 is the amazing clarity and smoothness of the stabilized image. While playing with the unit on the lake, I never saw any of the banding or noise and breaks in the images I had seen with some other live sonars. The detail was so good that the pros I was on the boat with could identify the kind of bait fish that were schooling below and even distinguish between bass and other larger fish species. With a quick lesson from them, I, too, was identifying fish species.

While there is no question that live sonar and ActiveTarget 2 will change how you fish, it still doesn’t catch them for you — as a day on the water with pros showed me. Watching nice fish swim up to and then ignore the bait presented directly to them was fun and frustrating. ActiveTarget 2 will undoubtedly help get you to the fish; the rest is up to you.

Get a Vessel Safety Check!

The easiest way to prepare for the boating season is with a free safety check.

reparing for the boating season should include inspecting your boat’s mechanics, reviewing navigational regulations and ensuring that proper items are onboard — a complimentary Vessel Safety Check (VSC) gets you started.

VSCs ensure that recreational watercraft equipment meets all federal, state and local regulations. An inspection is performed at the dock, ramp or driveway in less than an hour. If the boat meets minimum U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) safety standards, it receives a decal displayed on the portside windshield or a paddlecraft’s flat surface. Good for the calendar year, the decal verifies the standard equipment is in working condition, prevents boating citations and even lowers boater insurance.

Who performs checks?

Volunteers undergo an approved Coast Guard course and exam, have supervised training and must perform at least five yearly inspections to remain qualified. Besides checking for required items onboard, they may discuss the care and use of equipment, life jackets, radio usage, visual distress signals, anchoring or other topics.

Tony Cortina from America’s Boating Club of the Crystal Coast in Morehead City, North Carolina, is a five-year veteran examiner who usually certifies new boaters. He likes the opportunity to educate and give advice while examining different boat styles and socializing with other boaters. He recommends checking every expiration date, even the first aid kit. Cortina suggests replacing pyrotechnic flares with electric ones, and keeping them in a waterproof ditch bag.

Ask the examiner about local boating knowledge, recently closed areas, beacon or marker removals, docking facilities, marinas and fueling management in the boater’s area, especially if trailering from one state to another. Discuss float plans, overboard practices, using different equipment, reading nautical charts and specific local navigational aids to the area, and ways to keep the vessel in good condition. They can also recommend where to take boating classes and seminars.

What’s checked?

Inboard and outboard recreational boats, typically less than 65 feet, are checked. Twelve items must pass a VSC, including having a state and/or federal regulations booklet, vessel condition, ventilation, backfire flame controls, hazardous-free deck and clean bilge, working

electrical and fuel systems, and working galley/ heating systems, with some exceptions.

Sport and utility boats, canoes, kayaks and paddleboards are also inspected because of their popularity and high accident rate. Examiners look for sound paddlecraft with good hatch covers, secure hardware, a floatation system, paddles/oars, life jackets, visual and sound-producing distress signals, lights and compliance with state/local requirements.

The most common reasons for VSC failure are missing registration documentation and numbers, missing or expired visual distress signals, “bad” fire extinguishers, non-compliant PFDs and non-working navigational lights.

Vessel Safety Check sheet

This form identifies the required safety items needed onboard, as well as several recommendations to surpass the minimum CG requirements.

The inspection sheet includes the owner’s information, if they had a previous VSC decal, and if they’ve taken boating classes. After the inspection, the boater receives a copy of the inspection sheet with contact phone numbers for a re-inspection should the boater fail it. When the reason(s) for failure has been rectified, the owner has until the end of the year to be re-inspected.

What’s next?

The boat owner signs the completed inspection checklist and receives a copy to keep onboard. The paperwork goes to the Coast Guard, and a VSC shield decal is issued. The decal will be displayed on the portside windscreen for motorized vessels or the top of paddleboard vessels. Decals show the current year and are color-coded, so it’s easy to identify if the vessel is compliant from a distance.

To schedule a complimentary VSC, contact a local America’s Boating Club (ABC.ORG) or the Coast Guard Auxiliary (USCGAUX.ORG).

he Aquador 300 HT is a sporty boat that is being introduced to the world alongside PowerTime Boating, a high-end boat-share program that will be using the 300 HT because of its high level of fit and finish, ease of operation and a reputation for being safe in nearly any condition.

Justin Joyner, vice president of operations at the Nimbus Group, which is introducing the boat to the American market, is very excited about not just the Aquador, but its unique relationship with PowerTime.

“It’s a Finnish-built boat,” he says. “It is very beamy all the way along, from the transom to the bow, so its interior volume is great. We had it at the St. Pete Boat Show and people there were blown away by how massive it is inside. It’s got a Category B Offshore rating, but really it’s a beginner boat for a lot of people.”

It’s modestly powered with 200-hp outboards. Top speed is 36 knots, and planing speed is 12

knots with very little bowrise. It’s designed for cruising, while having enough room onboard for everyone to be comfortable.

“It’s a perfect dovetail for PowerTime, too,” Joyner says. “These are beginners in boating, mostly, but we are offering them a premium boat that we think will get them hooked.”

Joyner says PowerTime will have a few locations on the west coast of Lake Michigan beginning this spring. And he wants to point out that if a PowerTime member falls in love with a 300 HT, they can buy it and sail off toward the horizon on their own.

“This is the kind of boat that will get a lot of people into yachting. This is how you start,” he says.

It’s a strategy that should not only pay dividends for Nimbus, Aquador and PowerTime, but for the industry at large, because effectively what this boat is doing is creating more boaters.

Extreme Boats 646 Walk Around

True metal.

You could be forgiven if you took one look at the 646 Walk Around from Extreme Boats and made the mistake of thinking it was a fiberglass vessel. It’s supposed to look that way by design, but it’s not actually fiberglass. The 646 Walk Around is an aluminum boat built in New Zealand where “tinnies,” as they are called colloquially, are all the rage. The builder has an outpost in Parma, Ohio — Extreme Boats USA — where Ryan Evans is the vice president.

“The boats are made from 5083-grade aluminum,” Evans says. “They are 6 millimeters on the bottom and 5 millimeters thick on the sides, so these boats are super durable. But the metal is flared out so it looks like a fiberglass vessel.”

This extra touch gives Extreme Boats a significantly more elegant look than most aluminum boats, but without sacrificing any of the material’s famous toughness.

It’s a seaworthy boat too, and Evans is quick to

bring up one interesting feature that helps it stay steady in the chop.

“Like all Extremes, it’s got a flooded keel system,” he says. “That basically means it has a ballast tank that runs from stern to bow so when you slow down water fills up that chamber and takes away displacement.”

The boat also has a high degree of deadrise and a reverse-chine design that Evans says makes it safe and reliable.

The 646 Walk Around is also an easy boat to trailer because of its relatively compact size at 21 feet, 2 inches long, and its light weight. This model has some zip thanks to a 225-hp Mercury outboard engine, though as of press time speed numbers were hard to come by. Regardless, if you’re looking for a boat that can take you fishing, cruising or even act as an all-weather commuter, the 646 Walk Around from Extreme Boats is an excellent option to consider.

or fans of long-distance cruisers, Kadey-Krogen is a hallowed name. Since its founding back in 1976, the brand has sent a fleet of vessels with yacht-level customization and fit and finish to all corners of the globe, taking their adventurous owners with them.

The Open series is called that because of its relatively novel (at least for this sector of the market) open-plan main deck. It’s a modern and youthful take on a long-distance cruiser interior; those are two adjectives not often associated with this sector of the market. Ford Bauer, marketing

director for the Kadey-Krogen Group, explains in a bit more detail.

“The Open refers to the galley and salon area,” he says. “It’s all open up to the pilothouse. It’s more modern than most of our boats, and that extends to our competitors as well.”

Hull No. 1 of this model will be delivered at the end of 2024. When finished, the boat is expected to have a 3,000-nm range. That’s enough to go from Halifax, Nova Scotia, to Biarritz, France, on a single tank of fuel.

The 60 Open will be well-equipped for spending that kind of time onboard. The first hull will have an office so the owner can still run their business while at sea. It will also have two large staterooms, though the boat can be configured with three staterooms if necessary. A crew’s quarters can also be added aft for owners who would like some professional help on their journey, wherever that may lead.

“This isn’t for people who want a trawler,” Felhofer says. “This is more a yacht than a boat, and it appeals to people with a sense of adventure. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then this new boat will be able to fill a book.

PURSUIT DC 306

While I was perusing the photos of the Pursuit DC 306 dual console prior to my sea trial, my first impression of the boat is just how much this boat can offer and do. It’s not just about the main features like the open bow, dual consoles, cockpit space and seating, but the deck space, several hull features and some elegant touches also caught my eye.

HULL YEAH!

From the dock, you see the DC 306 has a clean profile with a high sheerline that accentuates the bow flare and wave-beating abilities. Ground tackle is tucked away in its own compartment in the bow with the anchor protruding from the hull and not mounted on deck, maintaining a clean look. This will save a few busted toes, while making deployment and retrieval an easy process.

Another feature is the starboard hullside door with ladder, perfect for boarding without having to step on/over the gunwale. It adds a level of safety when transiting to/from the dock or water. It also can assist when hauling in the big catch.

Speaking of the catch, the DC 306 sports rod holders in the gunwales, across the transom, as well as hardtop-support rod holders. Count ’em up and that’s 12 rod carriers. Pursuit can also add more if needed. With a 26-gallon recirculating livewell, Corian cutting board, rod storage, insulated fishboxes, several tackle storage compartments and 18-foot outriggers, this boat is ready to hit the inshore marshes or offshore ledges.

A TRUE CONVERTIBLE

The DC 306 can easily convert from a fishing machine into a cruiser with minimal effort. The open cockpit has a recessed transom seat that flips out, with a self-adjusting backrest that makes this a comfortable spot. There’s more, as an optional portside seat also flips out, adding capacity. Include the fixed aft-facing portside bench, and you have seats for all. Diamond stitching in the cushions is a nice touch, with Dri-Fast foam and mesh backing that helps to eliminate moisture. Drop in the rectangular fiberglass table and enjoy meals alfresco!

More seating (yup, that’s right) is found in the open bow. There are port and starboard forward-facing loungers with flip-down armrests. Relax by using these seats as benches for face-to-face interaction; generous padding works as a backrest. Underneath the forward center seat is insulated storage space, while the starboard seat has deep, molded storage underneath. Recessed coaming boxes have drink holders, storage space and USB ports. The area is ringed by grabrails for safety. A forward cushion makes this a true U-shape sitting area, and there’s a mounting bracket for a fiberglass table.

Let’s not forget about the helm seat to starboard with armrests and fore/aft adjustments. To port is a bolstered companion seat.

GOTCHA ’ COVERED

Standard on the DC 306 is the molded fiberglass hardtop with large-diameter, powdercoated aluminum supports aft, which add style and act as integrated handrails. Adding to the rigidity is the integrated windshield framing, with Pursuit's signature tempered side glass design with beefy support and a center vent that is a great idea for ventilation (two hardtop hatches enhance airflow). The windshield has a center framed pane and lower door that folds back for access to the bow. The left and right windshield panes gently curve aft, with essentially no distortion in the glass. Impressive!

With protection from the elements, the DC 306 can be operated in most any conditions. The starboard helm has standard twin flush-mounted Garmin GPSMAP 12-inch multifunction displays, rocker switches with backlit text above, an optional Yamaha joystick and throttle controls, a trim tab controller and a JL Audio single-knob controller. Molded in fiberglass, the helm station tilts aft for easy access to wiring or if adding components.

Confidence on the Water

In its own pursuit of promoting safer boating, Pursuit Boats has teamed up with the Chapman School of Seamanship for an incredibly unique offer to buyers of new Pursuit boats. The Confidence on the Water program allows up to four crewmembers, which can be family or friends, to be included in Chapman’s education and safety on the water program, compliments of Pursuit Boats. Through its sponsorship, Pursuit is the first boat manufacturer to offer such a program that benefits its owners as well as others on the water.

Designed as a two-day training course, there’s six hours of classroom instruction that includes waterway rules, safety, operation, docking and handling instructions. Additionally, there’s six hours of on-water, hands-on practical training. Boat handling is on a Pursuit twin outboard S 288 boat.

Here’s where the “DC” (dual console) part of the name comes in. On the side of the helm is a single-motion two-piece entry door to an enclosed cabin head. There’s a 9-gallon holding tank, a macerator pump and a deck pump-out. You can clean up at the molded sink with Corian counter and vanity mirror — just another example of how the DC 306 lets you play on the water during the day and change for dockside dining at night.

To port is another cabin inside that console, suitable for storage of rods, fiberglass tables, safety gear or other items.

Not to muddy the waters, Pursuit currently offers the DC 306 with one engine package, which is very suitable for this boat. Twin Yamaha Digital F300 V6 Offshore outboards are bolted on, and coupled with the Digital Electric Steering and Helm Master electronic controls, make this one powerful and true tracking platform. Blasting wide open, we charged into other boat wakes, and the DC 306 just ate them up. Wide open we averaged 52.1 mph in a comfortable manner. The boat didn’t porpoise or chine wake, and you could feel the hull “grip” the water. To keep the folks at Pursuit honest, we ran some speed numbers on reciprocal courses. At 3500 RPM, we both saw 28.5 mph at 17.8 gph, resulting in a 346 nm range. Trolling at 8.4 mph at 1500 RPM saw 4.4 gph and a range of 392 nm. Feel confident that the numbers Pursuit advertises are spot on.

Utilizing an infused fiberglass structural grid system into the hand-laminated hull with a five-plyresin infused transom system adds more than enough strength to carry the outboards. Pursuit knows how to build a hull. Complete with five-year hull, deck and blister warranties, it stands behind what it makes.

To enhance this boat, there are choices such as hull color, upholstery colors, bow thruster, ski tow pylon, stereo options, covers and curtains, Garmin radar and more.

Self-Driving Boats Are Here

It wasn’t long ago that the idea of boats that drive themselves seemed like some crazy, futuristic fantasy. But today you can buy boats that actually dock themselves, while fully self-driving capabilities are expected to come to market within the next 12 to 18 months. Ready to meet the future? Here’s a look at the systems competing for space on your helm.

Just four or five years ago, the idea that someone’s boat could navigate to the slip and dock itself without human intervention would have been laughed off as some crazy George Jetson fantasy. Yet, today you can buy it. What’s more, there’s even more advanced technology coming to market in the very near future, including systems that will not just dock the boat, but drive it wherever you want to go without any human intervention at all.

The reality is, self-driving boats are seen as the future of boating. In consumer surveys taken all around the world, prospective boat buyers were asked why they haven’t yet taken the plunge and bought a boat themselves. Their answers varied, of course, but the top answer — by far — wasn’t a lack of money or a lack of time. Nope, the main reason people stop short of buying a boat is fear of having to bring it back to the dock. Fear of losing control to an unexpected gust of wind, or perhaps an unseen wake from a passing vessel, scares people silly. It’s a particularly strong fear among people who grew up without a boat in the family, and for whom the entire idea of boating is new and unfamiliar.

Boats with automated docking systems that can bring the boat those final few yards into the slip alleviate those fears, and that’s why so many companies are pushing to bring autonomous boats to market.

Intrigued? Here’s a look at systems either currently available on the market, or currently in development for launch in the coming year.

Avikus / Raymarine

South Korean tech firm Avikus is generally considered the leader in autonomous boating, having announced its self-driving boat software at the 2022 CES show, then demonstrated a prototype at the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show the following October. At the 2023 Miami show, the company gave away 100 systems to boaters wishing to become beta testers, then went to market with the full commercial version of its NeuBoat Dock platform in October 2023. Lakeland Boating took a look at this new technology in the March 2023 feature “Boats That Drive Themselves” (p. 40).

Avikus NeuBoat is a proven platform that uses a combination of GPS, stereoscopic cameras and lidar inputs to make navigation decisions. In 2022, the company — a division of Korean shipping giant HD Hyundai — installed a prototype system on one of Hyundai’s massive ocean-going cargo ships for testing. The vessel left the U.S. Gulf Coast, crossed the Gulf of Mexico, navigated through the Panama Canal, and sailed across the Pacific back to Korea without a human hand ever touching the wheel. What’s more, because the computerized system made continuous route corrections on the fly, the ship completed the voyage using 7% less fuel than usual.

The current Avikus software is considered a Level 2 autonomy system, meaning that insurance companies still demand a human be standing at the helm, ready to take control in case of a malfunction. A Level 3 upgrade that will bring full self-driving capability is in the works, and is expected to hit the market by 2025. That’s now less than a year away.

Avikus has hinted that its fully autonomous NeuBoat platform will do more than just drive the boat while you and your guests relax in the cockpit. The company is developing advanced features around the platform like an integrated fish finder application, which lets the owner choose what kind of fish they want to catch, then leave it to the software to take them to the ideal location based on the fish’s preferred habitat and historic catch data. It then commands a separate sonar system to execute a search pattern over the area to physically locate fish.

Also under development is a sunset app, which can take the boat to the perfect location to enjoy a spectacular sunset, arriving at the right time and positioning the craft precisely to provide the best views. Additional watersports and cruising apps are also being proposed.

Brunswick

Brunswick was an early adopter of auto-docking technology, collaborating with Raymarine in 2019 to help integrate Raymarine’s DockSense product with Mercury’s joystick piloting platform. But since acquiring electronics giant Navico in 2021, Brunswick has gone on to develop its own fully automatic docking system. In August 2023, the company revealed its first prototype to a handful of boating journalists — myself included.

The as-yet unnamed system uses a pair of differential GNSS GPS receivers and a series of onboard stereoscopic cameras to determine the vessel’s exact position, and its exact proximity to other nearby objects like docks, piers, sea walls and boats. But beyond simple object recognition, it also has the ability to incorporate machine-learning algorithms and make decisions related to course and speed in order to bring the vessel to a slip that the operator selects on a touchscreen display.

The combination of situational awareness and navigational decision-making allows Brunswick’s system to neatly maneuver around obstacles and bring the vessel to the dock. The differential GPS brings the boat close, before handing control over to the stereoscopic cameras for those crucial final feet. Because they can perceive distance, the stereo cameras allow a level of accuracy at close range that GPS alone just can’t match, says the company. In our on-water test in a very busy New York harbor,

the system brought our Boston Whaler test boat close enough to the slip that I could have easily bridged the remaining gap with my cellphone.

Brunswick is planning to bring its docking assist product to market in 2025. Given its scale and reach, this could prove to be a real game-changer.

Daewoo

Korean firm Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine

Engineering is a direct competitor to Avikus, and the company demonstrated a version of its own autonomous navigation system at the 2023 Korea International Boat Show. While slightly less developed than the Avikus NeuBoat product, Daewoo’s system is also Level 2 autonomous and is currently undergoing intensive testing as the company looks to develop versions for both the commercial shipping and recreational boating markets. The company won’t commit to a possible release date, but the prototype it showed in Korea certainly looks ready to go to market.

Garmin

Garmin introduced its innovative Surround View camera system back in 2021. While it doesn’t include electronics to drive the boat for you, by providing

skippers with a real-time overhead view of the boat, Surround View gives boaters an unmatched level of situational awareness as they approach the slip.

Surround View uses a proprietary software suite to stitch together live data feeds from up to six different cameras mounted onboard the boat, yielding a seamless, wraparound overhead view. A visual bumper feature helps the captain see when docks, piers or other objects breach preset barrier limits around the boat, while distance markers provide visual cues to help maintain safe clearance and separation.

While Garmin understandably won’t say anything about possible future developments, it seems a safe bet to expect the company is already looking at using Surround View, perhaps with GPS and radar, as a foundation for developing its own autonomous platform.

Samsung

Yet another Korean competitor to Avikus, Samsung also unveiled a prototype version of an autonomous navigation platform at the 2023 Korea International Boat Show. Its Level 2 system also features advanced collision avoidance technology, and like Daewoo’s platform, is in an advanced testing stage.

The company won’t say anything further, but the fact it demonstrated a prototype at a major international boat show suggests it hopes to bring the system to market soon. With Samsung’s massive financial and technical resources, this system could be one to watch.

Yamaha

Yamaha treated a handful of boating journalists — once again including yours truly — to an advance peek at its DockPoint autonomous docking platform during the 2023 Miami Boat Show. Installed on a Grady-White Canyon 336 center console rigged with twin Yamaha 425 XTO Offshore outboards, the system performed flawlessly — as expected, given Yamaha’s plans to bring the platform to market in early 2024.

DockPoint allows boaters to store the physical location of up to 100 different docks and boat ramps in its memory, including preferences such as port-side or starboard-side mooring. Upon return to the marina, the operator simply navigates to a location within 328 feet (100 meters) of the slip. Pushing two buttons activates the system and has it take control of the boat for the final approach to the dock.

Using two differential GPS antennas, Yamaha’s DockPoint system can accurately take the boat to within a few inches of the slip and hold it in position while the skipper secures the lines. The DockPoint platform instantly responds to wind gusts, boat wakes and currents to ensure a successful approach every time out, the company says.

What Yamaha did not show last year was touchscreen-controlled software that presents an overhead view of the marina and allows the skipper to use familiar drag-and-drop fingertip controls to move the boat around. Or, alternatively, simply tap the slip they want and let the software drive the boat to the dock. This software app is not in production, and it doesn’t exist as a prototype; however, Yamaha filed an application with the U.S. patent office for it in October 2022, so perhaps we’ll see drag-and-drop control one day as a future feature in its DockPoint platform.

Volvo Penta

Swedish propulsion giant Volvo Penta is another autonomy pioneer, having launched its first assisted docking platform back in 2021. The Assisted Docking system integrates a proprietary software layer with the company’s GPS-based Dynamic Positioning System and proprietary IPS. Combined with Volvo’s joystick control and glass cockpit systems, it provides full assisted docking capability. It compensates

automatically for currents, boat wakes and wind gusts, allowing even novice captains to easily guide their boat into even the tightest of slips.

Further upping the ante, Volvo Penta now works in collaboration with Garmin, integrating its Surround View camera system to further enhance the platform’s assisted docking capability.

Azimut Yachts was the first boat brand to adopt Volvo’s assisted docking technology, followed by Groupe Beneteau and Holland, Michigan-based Tiara Yachts.

While the platform still requires inputs from the captain, with parent company Volvo Group’s substantial investments in autonomous systems for cars, the development of a fully autonomous marine platform surely can’t be far off. Volvo, as to be expected, won’t say anything but I predict the company will attract a lot of attention at this winter’s boat shows following the futuristic view of boating — including fully autonomous vessels — that it presented last year.

TDescribed as “the place of good health” by the Iroquois, the delightful hamlet of Gananoque continues to toast the wellbeing of visitors today as a mecca for dining, shopping and entertainment in one of the most beautiful corners of the Great Lakes.

he Iroquois name Gananoque, which roughly translates to “place of good health,” seems an apt name for the gentle slope of Canadian shoreline overlooking the St. Lawrence River just a few miles downstream from Lake Ontario. Sheltered by the Admiralty Islands where the Gananoque River meets the St. Lawrence, it’s a peaceful spot blessed with nature’s bounty, making the description easy to understand — and appreciate.

The name Gananoque can also translate to “land of plenty” or “place of two rivers,” the additional translations reflecting previous occupancy by the Ojibwe and Mississauga bands of indigenous peoples. But regardless of its exact origins, the name Gananoque universally means good times for visiting boaters.

Let’s begin with a note on pronunciation because, spelled out on a printed page, Gananoque certainly looks a mouthful. Some locals say, “There’s the right way, there’s the wrong way, and there’s Gananoque,” as a means of communicating the correct phonetics (GANA-nock-way). But in eastern Ontario, pretty well everyone just calls the place Gan.

Gan’s location near the head of the St. Lawrence River led to the settlement quickly gaining prominence as a trading port, initially by native peoples then the European settlers who followed. The community flourished, particularly during the period between the American Revolution and the War of 1812 when large numbers of British Loyalists settled in the area, finding the natural waterfalls on the tributary Gananoque River ideal for mill construction. In due course, lumber mills, flour mills and grist mills appeared, leading to Gan’s new nickname as the “Little Birmingham of Canada” in reference to its rapid industrialization and large population of transplanted Brits. The industrial boom was not to last, however, and today the community of just under 6,000 people either commute to full-time jobs in the nearby city of Kingston or work locally in the tourism sector. They’re kept busy by a combination of visiting cottagers (known as “islanders” in reference to the location of most vacation homes) and transient boaters from both sides of the border stopping in for a day or two through the season as they explore the 1000 Islands.

Getting to Gananoque is easy enough. The pleasant town sits just 17 miles downstream of Kingston, and nearly straight across the St. Lawrence from Clayton, New York. The easiest approach from Lake Ontario is to follow the north shore downstream through the Bateau Channel, passing to the Canadian side of Howe Island. You can also approach directly from the U.S. side of the river through the Wolfe Island Cut, staying clear of the Admiralty Islands and their unmarked shoals.

Upon arriving in town, most visiting boaters will immediately head for the prominent Gananoque Municipal Marina on the west side of town, where a flashing red beacon marks the entry channel between the shore and the marina breakwall. The marina has more than 300 slips in all, with half designated for visitor use — just look for the blue mooring cleats. Reservations can be made in advance, and are recommended when visiting over summer holiday weekends. Otherwise, it’s a good idea to call ahead on VHF 68 for a slip assignment before you arrive. Although located on the western edge of town, the marina is an

easy 10-minute walk to all the main attractions in the downtown core.

If you’re just popping into town to reprovision, the marina has a shopper’s dock located adjacent to the Public Utilities Commission building on the eastern shoreline as you enter the facility.

If for some reason you can’t get a spot at the municipal marina, the Gananoque Inn, situated on the east side of the Gananoque River before the bridge, has limited transient dockage that’s available on a first-come, first-serve basis. There are no facilities otherwise, but the location can’t be beat.

A show like no other

Billing itself as the Gateway to the 1000 Islands, Gananoque has no shortage of fun things to see and do. King Street — known locally as King West or King East, depending which side of the Gananoque River you’re on — is the main drag and key commercial district.

By far Gananoque’s biggest draw is its live theater scene. Plenty of Great Lakes ports of call offer shopping, dining and history, but Gan’s emphasis on live entertainment is truly unique.

The Thousand Islands Playhouse

operates two theaters on the waterfront, including its flagship 360-seat Springer Theatre located in the former Gananoque Canoe Club building. The location affords the venue with direct water access and its own mooring slips for show-goers who prefer to arrive by boat. Slip reservations can be made when purchasing show tickets, and are highly recommended.

Talk about a venue for a night out — the magnificent facility was built in 1909 and has been completely updated inside and out with state-of-the-art facilities, sound and lighting, enabling the production of large-scale plays and musicals. Visitors enjoy every possible comfort in a remarkable building that remains true to its original design — complete with two of the largest waterfront decks in the region.

While it doesn’t offer boat parking, the nearby Firehall Theatre — built in 1913 as the town’s armory, then later used as its main fire station — is a 130-seat venue operated by the Playhouse presenting smaller, experimental plays in a less formal environment. There’s also a Playwrights’ Unit, with a variety of workshop productions open to the public.

range of productions each year, with full details on its website. Regardless of venue, the Thousand Islands Playhouse is a huge draw, with many boaters planning their summer visits around what production happens to be on at the time and what tickets may be available. Planning ahead and booking your tickets in advance is essential, because virtually every presentation sells out during the boating season.

While it doesn’t have boat parking available, the historic Royal Theater on King Street East also presents an inviting lineup of plays and musicals each year in its charming heritage theater. Built in 1930 by the Delaney family as a vaudeville house, the facility is a unique, pouredconcrete structure recognized as one of the first fireproof buildings constructed in North America. It operated as a theater continuously until 1960 when it was converted into a bowling alley, only to be re-developed and lovingly restored for its original purpose in 2013.

Take it all in

If you’re interested in absorbing some local historical drama, then you’ll find the downtown core of Gananoque has much to offer thanks to its affluent industrial past. while Panache, on King East, is known throughout the 1000 Islands for its baked goods, including quite possibly the best cheesecakes on the planet. And of course there’s Muskie Jake’s, a legendary tap and grill housed in the Gananoque Inn on Stone Street South.

The Gananoque Inn is also home to the Watermark restaurant, offering more upscale dining focused on traditional Canadian cuisine. A nice meal at the Inn is the ideal way to cap off an indulgent morning spent enjoying its extraordinary spa. Offering a variety of wellness, facial and massage treatments, the Gananoque Inn’s waterfront spa is one of the most popular spots in town, and particularly among visiting boaters looking to work out any kinks or just luxuriate in lavish all-over pampering. Presently closed for renovations and expansion, the spa is expected to reopen just in time for the 2024 boating season.

Of course the Gananoque Inn isn’t the only place in town to enjoy some

decadent self-indulgence. Shine Spa and Esthetics, on King East, offers a variety of wellness treatments sure to be appreciated by weary travelers, especially after a few days on the water.

No port of call is complete without offering a good share of retail therapy, and visiting boaters will be thrilled to find that in this regard, Gananoque comes up aces. King Street East, in particular, is lined with an enchanting range of small curio shops and boutiques with locally produced artisan goods you simply won’t find in the big box malls.

Gan is blessed with more than its share of fine art galleries too, like the Heather Haynes Gallery on Charles Street North, Handworks on St. Lawrence Street, along with Woodchuck and VAGA, all on King East.

The Drawing Room, located inside the Arts and Crafts Collective on King East, sells an eclectic range of vintage clothing, while This That and Everything, also on King East, sells, well, a bit of this, that and everything else. Beggar’s Banquet, on King East, offers a wide range of books,

No matter when you visit, you’ll likely find some sort of festival or special event underway through the summer to add further spice to your stay. The town operates a busy event schedule all year round, with all the details on the town’s website (GANANOQUE.CA/EVENTS).

Get up and go

If you’re looking to stretch your legs after a few days in the boat and want to see more than just the lively downtown, then break out your walking shoes and explore further on the Gananoque Trail System. The trails consist of three progressively longer loops — the Lion’s Trail, Roger’s Trail and River Trail — that ultimately form a 7.5-mile perimeter hike over different views and terrain, with varying facilities. Trail maps can be found online or picked up at the Chamber of Commerce office.

For a more extended ramble, dig out the bikes and go for a ride on the magnificent Thousand Islands Parkway Trail. Head east on King Street through the downtown core and you’ll soon pick up the quiet two-lane road, with its distinct and separate paved bike path, which runs east along the water for more than 25 miles.

Constructed in the 1930s, the Thousand Islands Parkway today is a quiet road taken mainly by vacationers staying at waterfront cottages along its route; most traffic sticks to the busy 401 highway a few miles to the north, making the Thousand Islands

Parkway a generally peaceful and relaxing ride. As you coast along on your bike you pass quaint villages, peaceful coves and breathtaking vistas, including parts of Thousand Islands National Park.

Established in 1904, the national park is one of Canada’s smallest, with most of its 10 square miles represented by a multitude of offshore islands. Yet the vistas afforded from shoreline lookouts over the St. Lawrence are typically jaw-dropping. Wildlife abounds, including deer, porcupines, beaver, foxes, raccoons, turkey vultures, rabbits, squirrel s , bald eagles, chickadees and weasels.

At its midpoint, the Thousand Islands Parkway meets Highway 137, which leads south to New York and the Thousand Islands Bridge. Built in 1937, the bridge — actually a series of spans connecting the Canadian and American shores over multiple islands — is a prominent Gananoque landmark. For the best views, cycle to Hill Island — only a few hundred yards from the U.S. border — where the 400-foot-tall 1000 Islands Tower offers magnificent, panoramic vistas of the river, the bridges and the surrounding countryside. It’s a long way up, but once you reach the top you’ll be very glad to have your camera.

If you really want to get some eye popping vacation pictures, 1000 Islands Helicopter Tours offers aerial sightseeing flights over Gananoque and its surroundings, including the 1000 Islands, the Thousand Islands Bridge and nearby Boldt Castle.

When it comes to fishing on Lake Michigan, no one knows the tips, tricks and angling spots quite like Lake Michigan Angler. Started in the mid-1990s in a basement, the shop was one of the first online fishing retailers. Fourteen years later — when founder Frank Juzwik grew out of the basement and asked longtime friend and fishing buddy Rob Wendel to open up a store with him — modern-day Lake Michigan Angler was born.

The brick and mortar shop, located in Winthrop Harbor, Illinois, has just about everything you need to fish for trout, salmon and more on Lake Michigan, from lures and lines to rods and reels. But the store goes far beyond a mere tackle shop. It offers instructional videos, classes, tips and advice for the best fishing spots, fishing reports, information on local charters and more — all for free.

“Education is kind of like our specialty; salmon fishing on Lake Michigan can be a little complicated,

hard to jump into,” explains Wendel. “We really pride ourselves on taking the time with anglers to show them the right way so they can go out and catch fish immediately.”

The shop even has a podcast called “Lake Michigan Angler TV” (available on YouTube) providing fishing reports/advice. Any way the shop can get the information to anglers, it’s willing to tackle it.

Lake Michigan Angler’s location between Chicago and Milwaukee makes it a convenient stop for anglers from the area, and that particular part of Lake Michigan has some of the most consistent fishing in the entire lake. According to Wendel — “There’s always a lot of fish to catch here!”

Built in 1931 in Alexandria Bay, New York, by Hutchinson Boat Works, Gadfly spent her early years in the 1000 Islands as part of the Keewaydin estate’s fleet. When the family returned to Michigan, they took Gadfly with them because they had enjoyed her so much on the St. Lawrence River. She returned to the river in 1994 when she was donated to the Antique Boat Museum by Margaret H. Wallace, a member of the family that originally owned Keewaydin.

As part of the museum’s in-water fleet, she has provided hundreds of museum patrons with the opportunity to enjoy traveling on the river in the secure comfort that is the embodiment of her style. Sedan Commuters were very popular among wealthy summer residents as they were ideal for touring, commuting and picking up invited guests.

Gadfly’s large planing hull seems to disguise the cruising speed that swiftly propels this grand boat to her destination and softens the jar often associated with choppy seas. Hutchinson hull designs had especially smooth, soft-riding characteristics. Their joinery work was unmatched for precision fit and strength. To own a Hutchinson was to possess one of the finest examples of marine craftsmanship. Hutchinson always selected the best quality mahogany that earned them a reputation for superior natural finishes. The examples of Hutchinson boats exhibited at the Antique Boat Museum possess nearly all of their original mahogany planking so viewers can still examine the precise joinery and wood selection that resulted in their excellent reputation.
