hat a year 2018 has been — from working up a sweat on a Chicago Cycleboat (pictured above) to attending boat shows, plenty of press events and new boat launches. Having covered the boating industry for more than 72 years, you would think Lakeland Boating has seen it all by now. But, alas, we are continually impressed by ingenious products and innovative boats. With a new round of winter boat shows upon us, we can’t wait to see what’s next! To understand what we’re talking about, flip on over to the Holiday Gift Guide (p. 20) and 2019 Buyer’s Guide (p. 41) to drool over new yachts, find the perfect gift for your favorite boater, and maybe even discover your next dream boat. Ohio Sea Grant’s Stone Lab on Gibraltar Island has received $2.65 million thanks to the Clean Lake 2020 Plan. The money will be used to construct new lab space and purchase additional research equipment.

Enbridge to Build Tunnel Underneath Line 5 The fate of Enbridge’s Line 5 has finally been decided. The State of Michigan has reached an agreement to build a tunnel underneath the oil and gas pipeline in the Straits of Mackinac. The plan is to remove the 65-year-old Straits section of the pipeline and build a four-mile tunnel and new pipeline section beneath the lakebed of the Straits. According to the agreement, this will
“essentially eliminate the risk of adverse impacts that may result from a potential oil spill in the Straits.” The project will cost between $350 million to $500 million and is expected to take seven to 10 years to complete. Enbridge will pay for its design, construction, operation and maintenance for up to 99 years. Enbridge and the Mackinac Bridge Authority need to agree on the plan before construction begins.

Navigare Opens Base in Rhode Island, Adds Ontario Dealer

Study Shows Economic Impact of GLRI Helping the environment pays off. According to a Great Lakes Commission study, every federal dollar spent on Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) projects produces $3.35 of additional economic activity in the Great Lakes region. GLRI launched in 2010 and Congress appropriated over $2.5 billion from 2010 through 2017 to fund more than 3,600 projects that have dramatically improved environmental conditions around the region. The study shows that other effects of the initiative are: Creating or supporting thousands of jobs; boosting tourism in the Great Lakes region; an increase in new waterfront real estate and commercial development; and a resurgence in water-based recreation. “This study describes what we already know in facts and figures: Cleaning up legacy pollution and restoring aquatic habitat on the Great Lakes isn’t only good for the environment, it creates jobs and fuels the regional economy,” says Mike Shriberg, executive director of the National Wildlife Federation’s Great Lakes Regional Center. Brunswick Launches Boat Rental Network Joining the boat club business, Brunswick’s Boating Services Network has launched OnBoard Boating Club and Rentals (OnBoard). This “turnkey business platform” was built to empower “marine dealers and marinas to expand their operations and serve the emerging and rapidly growing boat club and rental consumer market segments,” according to a statement. OnBoard will provide customers access to a diverse fleet of boat brands, financing for approved boat fleet purchases and access to an online reservation system. Hinckley Unveils Two New Models
The Newport Boat Show in September was an exciting event for Hinckley Yachts as they debuted two new models: The Picnic Boat 40 and Sport Boat 40c (pictured). Reminiscent of early Hinckley models, the Picnic Boat 40 offers the same classic lines as models past, but with the latest technology, such as CZone digital switching and SureShade protection from the sun. Hinckley’s new Sport Boat series is a break from their mold, offering the world’s first carbon epoxy performance boats in production. The Sport Boat 40c features optional twin 627-hp outboards from Seven Marine, propelling the boat to speeds of almost 60 mph. The boat also offers expansive forward J-seating area; an air-conditioned cabin below; and a U-shaped settee that transforms into a queen-size berth. Webasto & Volvo Debut Webasto Breeze Boaters on open-cockpit sterndrive boats now have the option to add air conditioning and heating solutions onboard, thanks to Webasto and Volvo Penta. The two companies have partnered to offer the industry-first fully integrated engine-driven air conditioner and optional heating system. The system, called Webasto Breeze, will be marketed to builders as an OEM-installed option and through dealers as an add-on. Volvo Penta will supply an upsized alternator and mounting bracket, and Webasto will provide the belt-driven compressor, evaporator, condenser, seawater pump and dash-mounted controls. The entire system is 12VDC, eliminating the need for an auxiliary generator. ou’d be hard-pressed to find a boat owner that couldn’t use a few new or additional USB charging outlets — particularly in light of the increased use of smartphones and tablets for navigation, entertainment and pretty much everything in between. Most boats have a standard 12V DC outlet, allowing you to insert a USB charge adaptor; however the contacts can be unreliable aboard a bouncing boat, and the protruding adaptor is prone to snagging. A dedicated USB socket is a much better option. Here’s how to spend a few hours on your boat adding a convenience that both captain and crew will appreciate.

Boat Show Survival Guide Sanity-saving tips to make the most of the traveling circus. he 2019 winter boat show season is upon us, which means prospective show-goers are booking trips to hot destinations, such as New York, Toronto and Miami. International boat shows are magnets for serious boaters, who also converge in impressive numbers at popular regional shows like Chicago, Minneapolis, Atlanta and Los Angeles. Roughly 25 percent of show attendees are new to this traveling circus. If you’re one of them, here’s a quick survival guide to help you avoid the most common newbie pitfalls. As a refresher, show veterans may also want to take a quick peek. 1. Set a realistic budget. Before making travel arrangements, consider your budget and prepare for the expenses associated with visiting your chosen destination. Nothing will ruin a trip faster than realizing you didn’t plan for the cost of, well, everything. Be aware that costs near the show are going to be significantly higher than those farther away. And don’t forget the additional line items, from meals and cocktails to transportation and parking. Sticker shock can be the downfall of an otherwise positive experience. 2. Make arrangements early. You can avoid a last-minute panic by making arrangements well in advance. Book your accommodations early, and don’t forget about dinner reservations if you have a foodie bucket list. 3. Research lodging near the show venue. Although a central location has a higher price tag, consider booking a room close to the marina or convention center. You don’t want to wake up any earlier than necessary, particularly if you’re enduring an eastward time change, and you’ll avoid transportation headaches (see No. 4). Instead, you can fuel your day with a hearty, leisurely breakfast. And if your show is in the upper latitudes, you can make a quick dash for the convention center without getting stuck with armfuls of winter clothing. Just do your homework, because this happens to everyone: The hotel’s photos are so inviting, and it’s the right price, so you book online, only to find out later that it’s nowhere near the show. 4. Don’t forget about transportation. If you do decide to stay farther away to keep costs down, spend some quality time on the boat show’s website before you leave home. It will provide critical information about how to get there. Gridlocked traffic, lack of parking and many blocks of extra walking are unpleasant surprises that have the potential

to ruin your first day. Instead, arrive at your destination armed with the details you need to use public transportation, taxis or ride-sharing services. 5. Create a game plan. Have a strategy for each day at the show. Prep a list of the exhibitors you want to see, seminars you hope to attend and activities the whole family would like to experience. Then study the show guide (or boat show mobile app if available) to get a feel for timing and layout. Group exhibitors and activities by proximity and/or start times so you can maximize what to see and do each day while minimizing the miles you’ll travel on foot; your companions will thank you for it — and so will your feet. A final (very important) footnote on this topic: Wear comfortable shoes. Ignore this at your own peril. 6. Consider where you’ll put your loot. Even if you’ve honed your must-see list to a few favorite exhibitors, you’re going to pick up a lot of catalogs, spec sheets and take-away goodies, like key fobs, drink koozies and hats. That’s fun; however, struggling with armloads of this stuff through the convention center and down crowded docks is not. Bring a backpack or, better yet, a small, wheeled bag. You’ll be grateful for it. 7. Dress appropriately. If you’re staying far from the show, you may try to wear clothing and shoes that will endure the abuse of a long day and continue to shine for an evening on the town. Don’t. If you wear light summer wear, you’ll freeze in the airconditioned convention center and burn in the scorching dockside sun. If you wear business attire, you’ll likely be too warm, and you won’t feel festive after sundown. And if you wear dress shoes to the show, you’ll sorely regret that decision. First, be comfortable. Second, dress in layers. The weather will change. As you shed layers, you can store them in your backpack or roll-aboard (see No. 6). Finally, if you’re staying too far from the show to return to your hotel before dinner, you can also pack your evening wear in that bag. 8. Have a predetermined meeting place. It’s inevitable at a big show with thousands of attendees that you have a bad cellphone signal, the call drops, or there is simply too much noise to hear the person on the other end. If you’re with a larger group that would like to see different things, make sure you have a predetermined meeting place for later in the day. Also, talk to your family members about where to reconvene if you’re accidentally separated.

10. Focus on the right boat. Expensive mistakes happen when show-goers look at all the wrong products and end up making a misguided purchase. If you’re in the market for a new boat, spend some time before you leave home deciding what kind of boater you are and what will best meet the needs and interests of your family members. Then, you can go through the show directory and make a list of companies who make that type of boat. Visit their booths and dock displays, and don’t waste your valuable time on the rest.

11. Resist the impulse buy. You really liked the sales guy and he was sure you’d found “The One.” So now you have a signed contract in hand, but it’s for the wrong kind of boat. Don’t get swept up in the energy and emotion of the show, because a boat should never be an impulse buy. Stay focused (see above), follow your gut, and never feel pressured into making a decision.

9. Save serious looking for weekdays. If possible, do your serious product research on a weekday, when salespeople have more time to talk with you, share information and offer personal tours of their booths. Save the familyfriendly fun for the weekend, which will be awash in special events and activities for the understandably larger crowds. 12. Don’t be a hero. You’re exhausted and your head is buzzing with information overload, yet you keep pushing on to the next booth. Trust us, this will cause a domestic incident if you have a partner and children in tow. Instead of driving hard all day, find a place to sit down and relax. Or, be willing to call it a day so you can enjoy a meal off site and then let the kids play in the hotel pool. You can come back tomorrow when everyone is refreshed and happy. 13. Enjoy yourself! At a major boat show, not only will you be able compare boats, meet manufacturers, take advantage of good prices, and communicate face-to-face with finance and insurance companies, you’ll also discover how to build a rewarding boating life that’s unique to you and your family. And you’ll catch a meaningful glimpse of how much fun is out there just waiting for you. ★

The other nice discovery in our review boat was a Fusion Bluetooth-enabled RA-55 stereo, which was driving a Fusion AM702 amp and six speakers. The stereo paired with my phone easily and sounded great, no matter where I sat in the boat. A large door on the port side of the console provides access to the secure, dry storage space under the helm. This is a very large compartment, capable of protecting oversize, bulky items with ease. This space also can be upgraded to a head with the addition of an optional porta-potti. The amount of storage space on the Stingray 216CC is truly impressive, and not just for a 21-foot boat. The company’s use of space reflects a lot of ingenuity and engineering smarts. This becomes even more evident as you move forward into the bow. A comfy, wide seat on the front face of the console conceals a standard cooler that can be upgraded to a 17-gallon livewell. There’s more gear storage in the bases of the two bow lounge seats, as well as a dedicated in-floor storage space between the two loungers. The aft ends of the two bow lounge seats are particularly noteworthy, putting what would otherwise be dead space to excellent use. Each seat ends in a small console topped with a solid-surface countertop and stainless steel beverage holder. The starboard console provides a small but useful sink and faucet, with thoughtful storage for a tilt-out trash bin below it. On the port side, a deck pad up top and storage beneath for a couple of Plano-style tray tackle boxes reminds buyers that this boat is more than ready to fish. Even with these useful consoles, the bow seats themselves are long enough that I had plenty of room to sit facing forward with my feet up. Between the two loungers at the front is an optional filler cushion that provides another seating position facing aft. Lifting the middle seat cushion exposes a non-skid deck pad that leads to the bow where you can find a convenient anchor locker, a dedicated stainless steel cleat and a mounting pad for an electric motor.
performance hull and Suzuki’s 175 ponies continued to charm with excellent mid-range acceleration and nimble handling. At wide-open throttle, the boat easily found its way to 45 mph. With a bit of trim adjustment, the 216CC inched its way up to a top speed of 47 mph in our sea trial. That’s outstanding performance by any measure. With its comfortable accommodations, ample storage space, thoughtful amenities and spirited performance, Stingray’s 216CC is a pure delight. Families looking for a versatile dayboat that’s easy to tow, easy to launch and easy to own will find a lot to like here. ★
STINGRAY 201DS PREFER A FULL WINDSHIELD? As enticing as a center console sounds, families who like to venture out on the lakes early or late in the season often prefer the comfort of a dual console boat with a full walk-through windshield. Ever accommodating, Stingray answers the call with its all-new 201DS. The 201 follows a traditional dual console deckboat floorplan, accommodating 10 people on the large twin lounge seats in the bow, twin sport bucket seats amidships, and a wraparound bench seat in the stern. Rated to handle outboards up to 175 hp, the 201DS is a touch smaller than the 216CC center console — something that’s not immediately apparent in spite of the presence of twin consoles. The stern is dominated by a near full-width bench seat, with the cushioning broken only by a neat transom pass-through toward its starboard end. Stingray’s deckboat hull really comes into its own in the bow, with all of the extra space it provides. The hull also directly impacts the boat’s performance in truly delightful ways. The wide hull surface encourages the 216CC to plane easily, and our sea trials revealed consistent hole shots of under three seconds with the engine trimmed right in, averaging 2.8 seconds from dead stop to fully on plane. The 216CC doesn’t climb up onto plane so much as just lift itself vertically out of the water, thanks in no small part to the grunt of the big Suzuki and the efficiency of Stingray’s Z-Plane hull design. When Stingray introduced the Z-Plane hull years ago, its performance claims raised more than a few eyebrows. The Z-planes incorporated into the hull surface act like full-length fins when the boat is at idle, helping it slip onto plane quickly. With the boat up on its running surface, the Z-planes then help control spray for a quieter, drier ride. According to Stingray, the smooth flow of water generated by the Z-Plane design gives the propeller a cleaner bite in undisturbed water, in both straight line acceleration and hard cornering maneuvers. Once up and running, that combination of Stingray’s
The helm console offers the requisite gauges to the sides of a large center panel, which provides the ideal space for installing a large touch-screen multifunction display. While the dial gauges are a nice backup that will be appreciated by some buyers, the digital dash is the future and Stingray is clearly embracing the new technology. A well-designed upholstered dash brow provides some protection for the screen, while the large, stylish wraparound windshield and generous console design effectively shield occupants from a cold morning breeze. Our review boat was rigged with a Yamaha F150 four-stroke — one of the most popular outboards in its class. With full negative trim the 201DS averaged zeroto-plane times of just under three seconds, white attaining a top speed of 46 mph at wide-open throttle. It was great fun to drive, and represents an attractive alternative for families who like to stay out there until the water turns solid.

ho would have thought that the tagline of a product sold some 40 years ago — from one of the first infomercials ever created — would influence the way people purchase boats today. But that’s just what happened when Ron Popeil started selling the “Showtime Rotisserie Oven” via long-winded television commercials, telling the world all you have to do to use it is to “Set it and forget it!” This tagline promoted a product that was easy to use and easy to clean up. The “set it and forget it” mentality has bled over into the boating world. There’s a new trend of center console boats that can be on the water one minute and in storage minutes later with minimal effort. Keeping things simple is only one of the many reasons modern-day pleasure boaters have been gravitating toward center console boats. And that’s why the engineers at Scarab went overboard in creating creature comforts with the versatile 255 Open ID.

As an avid angler, I was quite eager to test drive this rig, fantasizing of all the fishing that could be done from a boat like this with such open expanses (especially when outfitted with the optional fishing package). Boaters of all types are discovering the versatility of center consoles — whether or not they like to catch fish — with their ability to offer many activities, including wakeboarding, diving or even just lounging on a sandbar. I quickly discovered the 255 Open ID was designed to accommodate all these activities and more. Getting onboard the 255 Open ID was a cinch. Lift a leg up and over the gunwale and step onto its stable flooring with a specialized marine mat. Or, as I chose to board, enter via the steady tailgate door that lies flat when open and extends beyond the transom. In addition to creating easy access into and out of the boat at the dock, this steady platform (with optional folding ladder) works wonders for climbing in from the water or lounging in the sun.

The 255 Open ID I test drove is jet-powered by a pair of supercharged 250-hp Rotax jet drives below the hatch. I soon found out this meant there’s enough power with the 500 total horses that you better make sure the boat’s pointed in the right direction before punching the throttle. Wherever you have the wheel aimed, that’s where you’re going to go — and in a hurry. The vessel shifted effortlessly from neutral to forward and reverse; this is due to the electronic iNR system, which synchronizes the throttles automatically. All that’s needed is a single throttle rather than dual. And because it’s jet-propelled, there’s no trim and tilt to worry about. Just point and go, and let the jets do the rest. The day I test drove the 255, the wind was up and the waves on the small lake were cresting up to two feet. The hull’s 20-degree deadrise allowed for an impressively-smooth ride while slicing through the whitecaps, and no spray came up and over the bow. Another notable asset was the boat’s maneuverability; even in steep chop, the jetboat gripped the lake’s surface and turned on a dime. Whether I was heading into the wind or motoring with it, the 3,800-pound craft topped out at 56 mph, cruised comfortably at 27 mph and got up and on full plane in a mere 3 seconds. Feel free to give ‘er the gas as much as you like — the fuel tank holds an impressive 56 gallons of petro.
Room to roam
This marks the fourth year Scarab has been updating its jetboat line, with the 255 Open ID the largest in the fleet. Measuring 25 feet in length, with an 8-foot, 4-inch beam, the boat feels cavernous compared to so many others with the same footprint. Just as its name suggests, the 255 Open ID is, well, about as open space-wise as a center console can be. It has an unpretentious floorplan that creates room to roam without tripping over steps, plus it offers plenty of storage. The boat’s load capacity is 2,100 pounds, or up to 13 people. Unlike the center console rigs I’ve piloted in the past, there’s plenty of adjustable, well-padded seating to
accommodate everyone. In keeping things uncomplicated, the hand-crafted upholstery is easy to clean by simply spraying it with water and wiping it dry. Behind the console is seating for three side-by-side, with the middle bench dropping down if the pilot desires to stand. This setup allows the driver the comfort of steering without being bellied-up against the steering wheel, while being cradled and secure from the sides. The bow seating is very deckboat-like, with bolstered backrests that can be moved around to accommodate many seating scenarios. All seats have copious amounts of storage below them, including two huge coolers for drinks and munchies. The coolers are easily accessible by just lifting the seat rather than having to lift, pull and slide them out into the main floor. Speaking of the main floor, storage under the main deck has plenty of room for waterskis and more. To boot, storage ahead of the console is immense, and there’s even a head within to make the call of nature more pleasant while on the water, with plenty of room to dress into swimsuits.
Have fun, then be done
Besides there being no trim to master, jet power also means there’s no props to ding. The engine area is self-draining and closed-cooling to reduce seasonal maintenance and minimal winterization when the season is over. A black, canvas T-top is easily removed and stress-free to clean. It has zippers in the right places for easy access to the tow-point for skiing and the like. The rig is plentiful with stainless-steel cup holders, cell phone pockets and plenty of USB ports. I must admit, I really liked piloting the Scarab 255 Open ID. And I can see why center consoles are becoming more than just an angler’s dream boat, with wide-open spaces; new seating and storage; hull designs to take you anywhere; more than enough power to get you there and back; and plenty of fun in between. The Scarab 255 Open ID is easy to drive and even easier to maintain. Ron Popeil would be jealous. Set it and forget it? Naw. Drive it, rinse it out, and it’s ready for the next trip. H

D Making landfall at the West End
arkness blanketed the Sovereign Yacht Sales parking lot as we unloaded our gear and rubbed the sleep from our eyes. A smudge of pink to the east told us that a new day would soon break, and when it did, we needed to be on our way. The Carver Yachts C52 Coupe stood out like a blazing birthday cake, lights twinkling and engines rumbling. Our captain and his family — all experienced boaters bound for the Pulaski, Wisconsin-based boatbuilder’s annual owners’ rendezvous in Marsh Harbour, Bahamas — regaled us with stories of past bluewater crossings. Don’t worry, they said, setting our first-timer nerves at ease. The sea has been like a millpond for the last week, they told us, and we might even be able to sit in the bow lounges all the way from Stuart, Florida, to the West End. Get ready to relax, soak up the sun and enjoy the ride. On that promising note, we cast off the docklines and slid into the St. Lucie River. A fresh breeze ruffled our hair and sent ripples skittering along the water’s surface, but surely there was nothing to worry about. Just our luck. When we reached the inlet — the confirmed rendezvous spot for the several cruising yachts and large center console fishing boats that would be making the crossing together — the Atlantic was heaving. The captain did his best to maneuver the rolling C52 in broad circles while we waited, but one crewmember disappeared belowdecks within minutes, not to re-emerge until landfall nearly six hours later. The rest of us endured the barrage of salt spray in the cockpit, stared intently at the horizon and dreamed of a Seakeeper installation. The bow lounges, to say the very least, would not be in the cards today.

The St. Lucie Inlet is roughly 80 nautical miles from the Bahamas’ West End. Between is the Gulf Stream, a warm, fast ocean current that originates in the Gulf of Mexico, rounds the tip of Florida, and races northward along the East Coast to Newfoundland before crossing the Atlantic Ocean. Its volume is greater than all of America’s eastern rivers combined. It is, essentially, a river in the sea, and has a notorious temper in inclement weather — or if the wind clocks to the northwest, north or northeast. The resulting waves resemble those on the Great Lakes rather than those on the open ocean; they’re steep, breaking and dangerous. Fortunately for us, the wind was not out of the dreaded north. But it was strengthening, and our southeasterly direction across the swift-running stream to the West End guaranteed a bumpy ride. And a bumpy ride is exactly what we got. Three- to 4-foot seas created a constant pounding, while the occasional 5- to 6-footers left our stomachs somewhere on the salon ceiling (we’d long since abandoned the wet cockpit), rattling our fillings and ensuring that books and games would remain untouched in our luggage. Somehow, our 9-year-old daughter, Johanna, was fine. She played her games, watched “Looney Tunes” on an iPad, and created playing cards with blank paper, markers and scissors
after we assured her that no one would volunteer to dig around for the real ones. Stomach of steel, that child. My husband and I, on the other hand, spent nearly six hours alternating between attempted sleep and staring at the circle of spindrift-decorated blue around us. Then we saw it. The fuzzy line on the horizon that took on a greenish hue and soon bristled with vegetation and man-made structures. We had arrived at The West End.
Ready for adventure
Admittedly, in rough conditions, six hours feels like a very long time. As Gordon Lightfoot advised years ago, waves can indeed turn the minutes to hours. As we pulled into the Old Bahama Bay Resort & Yacht Harbour, however, the dancing palms and brightly colored buildings clinging to the sandy earth reminded us that we had, in fact, landed in a different country after a relatively short journey. The Commonwealth of the Bahamas is part of the Lucayan Archipelago, which comprises more than 700 islands, cays and islets in the Atlantic Ocean. Less than 100 miles from the U.S. mainland, we had completed our first bluewater passage as a family and were now officially on island time. Our entire group cleared customs at Old Bahama Bay, spent the night at the resort, and then departed after breakfast for our final destination: The Abacos. These limestone islands in the northern Bahamas are also known as the Friendly Islands and the Family Islands. By mid-afternoon, the C52 was snugged into her berth at the Abaco Beach Resort & Yacht Harbour, just a stone’s throw from Marsh Harbour on Great Abaco Island, and we were ready for adventure. Boaters who make the crossing from Florida can easily explore the Abacos with their own vessels. Or, if they know the shallow, lagoon-like Sea of Abaco reasonably well, they can rent dayboats in Marsh Harbour. As new arrivals, however, we elected to hire a local tour operator. We chose Froggie’s Out Island Adventures, based in vibrant Hope Town on Elbow Cay. Our Froggie’s captain picked us up in Marsh Harbour, took us to the Hope Town base to get our snorkel gear, and we were in for a unique Abaconian experience. We motored northwestward through the Sea of Abaco, leaving Great Abaco to port and watching the sea’s outer islands slide past to starboard: Man O’ War Cay, Scotland Cay, Great Guana Cay, Whale Cay and finally little uninhabited No Name Cay. Well, not entirely uninhabited; No Name Cay is home to the famous swimming pigs of Abaco.

Before we could get to the beach, several adult pigs broke from their fan club in the trees and trotted toward us, clearly prepared to accept whatever offerings we might have brought for them. years, when local Abaconians left five of them on the island. Their story might have had a sad ending had it not been for Craig Russell. “I was driving by in my little 14-foot boat about six and a half years ago, and I saw five pigs on the beach,” he recalls. “I realized no one was taking care of them. They were very thin and had no food or water. I love animals and couldn’t just do nothing to help them.” Russell travels to the cay regularly, usually on Wednesdays and Saturdays, but more often during vacations and holidays. As the pigs have few resources on the island, the 30 currently living there depend on humans — Russell in particular — for survival. As we dropped food into the pigs’ mouths, attempting to keep our fingers clear while watching our backs for enthusiastic companions approaching from the rear, our captain took jugs of fresh water to shore. It was there we spotted Russell’s lean frame as he moved between visitors, gently offering guidance. “A lot of visitors give the pigs bread, which is not good for them, especially the little ones,” he explains. “It’s best to feed them fruits and vegetables, or buy a bag of swine food in Marsh Harbour. I always chop coconuts for them, which is probably their favorite. Apples are a close second, and they really like the dry swine food. “Always feed with your hand flat, because people get bitten trying to feed the pigs with their fingers out,” Russell continues. “They think it’s finger food. If you’re feeding them, you also have to be careful they don’t sneak up behind you to take your food and accidentally bite you.” In fact, if you’re visiting No Name Cay and don’t see Russell, ask your captain to come along while you interact with the pigs. Local skippers can provide valuable information — and help watch your back. Although Russell did allow our daughter to hold one friendly piglet with his supervision, he does not encourage visitors to randomly grab the young ones. Not only might you find yourself on the receiving end of a mother’s wrath, other adult pigs might harm a piglet if they detect a human scent. “And please don’t try to ride (or tease) them,” Russell adds. “They are very smart and just want to be treated well. Enjoy them, and give them some love.”
Support the Swimming Pigs The swimming pigs at No Name Cay have become Bahamian celebrities, and a visit to Piggyville is now on the bucket list of countless tourists who arrive via private boats or with tour operators. Yet the animals still struggle to survive on this little island, and Craig Russell has financed their care largely out of his own pocket. If you love the pigs, there are a few ways you can help: ■ If you’re planning to travel to No Name Cay, bring healthy foods (fresh fruit, vegetables and swine food) and at least a couple gallons of fresh water.

Very close and far away
Although we were heartbroken to leave the gregarious pigs behind, a new adventure awaited just north of No Name Cay. At the appropriately named Green Turtle Cay, we nosed into a quiet harbor for a quick snorkel excursion, and our daughter came face to face with her first sea turtle. The day prior, Johanna learned to snorkel along the resort dock, where she could examine undersea life in user-friendly, shallow water. Newly confident, she stepped off the swim platform, and within minutes, we spotted a shadow just below the surface, gliding her way. The turtle seemed just as fascinated with Johanna as she was with it, circling around her to gaze into her face mask. Mere inches separated them. Johanna squealed into her snorkel, finned in a broad circle, and squealed again as the turtle spun with her. Only a rumbling tummy convinced her to say goodbye to her new friend. We motored south to Great Guana Cay for a late lunch at the rollicking Nipper’s Beach Bar & Grill, and then crossed the Sea of Abaco for our last stop of the day. Mermaid Reef lies near Great Abaco’s shoreline and is accessible by both land and boat, with mooring buoys available for vessels less than 25 feet in length. Our captain advised us to keep our snorkel time short due to rising wind and seas, then set us free. Although my husband and I are both certified PADI Advanced Open Water divers, it’s been years since we spent much time beneath the surface, and we fell in love with the underwater world all over again. Together with our little girl, we swam among schools of yellowtail, snappers, butterfly fish and trumpet fish. We spotted barracuda. And we heard the crunching sounds of myriad critters enjoying a coral meal. Returning to the Abaco Beach Resort as the sun fell toward the western horizon, we realized how special these Abaconian treasures are. DO I NEED BOAT INSURANCE?
YOU’RE PROBABLY NOT required by law to have boat insurance, but that doesn’t mean you don’t need it. Even if your state does not require you to carry boat insurance, your bank will if you have a loan on the boat. Also, most marinas require proof of liability insurance before they will accept a contract for a slip or a mooring. If you’re required to carry boat insurance, your homeowner policy will generally not be acceptable to them because homeowner’s policies are usually limited to boats under a certain size or value, and they don’t have the necessary provisions to cover the types of losses that may occur with a boat. Look for “All Risk” policies, which provide coverage for a broad array of calamities that could befall your boat, including theft, vandalism, lightning, fire, grounding or sinking, and lost or stolen belongings. Look for options that will protect your personal items, such as watersports equipment and fishing gear, as well as provide towing coverage in the unfortunate event of a breakdown. Many companies also give you the option for an inexpensive policy that does not insure physical damage to your boat at all, but only provides a specified amount of coverage for your liability to others in the event of an accident, as well as protection from uninsured boaters. Even if you are not otherwise required to have insurance and your boat is not worth very much, you should still consider insuring it. A collision with a small powerboat can cause serious injuries, and even if you are not found liable for those injuries, you could end up spending a significant amount of money in legal fees to defend yourself. Get a quote on several different policies so you can make an informed decision based on the coverages versus the cost. WITH THE ADDITION of the 216CC, the STINGRAY center console deck boat line consists of four models. At 21'8", it is just two feet shorter than the 236CC, but offers the same 101" beam and similar amenities. Whether fisherman or family, this boat offers a little something for everyone. here’s no sibling tourism rivalry with M&M (no, not the candy). Boaters who dock at Marinette, Wisconsin or Menominee, Michigan — which are known as “M&M” or “Twin Cities” — are in for a double treat. Sure, Marinette and Menominee are in different states, but with a joint Chamber of Commerce, and brochures and coupons that tempt exploration of both towns, M&M could use the old chewing gum slogan: “Double your pleasure.” Most boaters on the Great Lakes are familiar with Wisconsin’s Door County Peninsula and Green Bay; however, another great destination is just a short distance across the Bay in M&M. Jon Kukuk, who with wife, Susan, founded Nestegg Marine in Marinette on the Menominee River, says: “I often make reservations at Berg’s Landing (in Menominee) for boaters when they call ahead. Boaters often come from Door County for the day and want to be sure they can eat there.” Kukuk notes that the restaurant is popular for its fine dining at reasonable prices.

The two states and towns are divided by the Menominee River, which forms from the confluence of the Brule and Michigamme Rivers northwest of Iron Mountain, Michigan. This is a good fishing area that’s known for clean water and — as the folks in the Welcome Center in both Menominee and Marinette will tell visitors — it’s a beautiful area to tour. On a recent visit, John Hollo at the Marinette Welcome Center was passing out brochures to a couple of visitors who were driving through the area. He pointed out that the Wisconsin side was filled with waterfalls and the Michigan side had a wonderful lodge and scenery along M-35 on the Green Bay near the Cedar River. “The waterfalls are a huge draw,” Hollo says. “And the lodge is spectacular; tie up and explore.”

Tying up in Menominee
Deciding where to dock isn’t easy when there are so many great choices. Boaters will first see the sizeable Menominee Marina when approaching the area. Those looking for dockage in Marinette will travel up the Menominee River. The Menominee Marina is a success story. While the marina now features 272 slips for boats 25 to 60 feet, in addition to 20 inner wall-side tie-ups, its capacity and facilities are a night and day difference from Menominee Marina a few decades ago. “What was here was a post-war project with the docks on piles,” Harbormaster Manager Bill Cavil says. “That was taken out in the late 1970s.” With a name the same as the town, Menominee Marina may sound like a municipal development; however, Jim Kudlicki — who’s on the marina management

Marinette County is the waterfall capital of Wisconsin. But with more than a dozen falls arguably taking more than one day to see, boaters will need to rent a car. Visitors should set aside a couple of days to really enjoy the falls. The Marinette Welcome Center has a waterfall map and information on tours (MARINETTECOUNTY.COM). Here are 15 waterfalls: 1. Veteran’s Falls is on the Thunder River west of Crivitz on Highway W to Parkway Road North three miles. 2. McClintock Falls, 15 miles from Twin Bridge Park at the McClintock Park Campground, has rapids with bridges for viewing.

Strong Falls is on the Peshtigo River between Hwy 8 and Hwy C on Parkway Road in Goodman Park. team and was instrumental in the rebirth of the harbor and marina — explains the marina is self-sufficient and self-managed. In 1984, the marina had just 38 docks and the harbor was underutilized. Kudlicki explains that M&M Yacht Club members applied to the city and got a contract that led to the marina management. “Now, we have wonderful facilities for a marina,” he says. “We’re proud of what has been done — for the boaters and for the community.” Kudlicki walked around the boater’s lounge, excited about the transformation of an old water works filtration building into a charming facility that has showers, a TV, laundry, a play area and a kitchenette that provides boaters coffee, juice and even a continental breakfast on weekends. “We’re very proud of it,” Kudlicki says. “We rent this facility to the community, particularly for holiday events.” The marina’s next project is to add showers in the boathouse at the south end by the new 72-foot docks, which already have an active waiting list for the 2019 season. Even with the marina’s large number of slips,

Kudlicki suggests calling ahead, particularly during holidays, festivals and sailing races. “The Hook from Racine is a big one,” Kudlicki says. Sponsored by the Racine Yacht Club, The Hook is a 189.04-nautical-mile race that takes place mid-July. Another popular race is the 100 Miler, sponsored by the M&M Yacht Club, that sails between Menominee and Door County the week after the Hook. From the marina, boaters can walk a short distance to the Great Lakes Memorial Park, which is on the harbor just south of the marina and is a delightful place to relax.

When looking for a full-service marina with an excellent ship’s store, an award-winning repair department and a facility that includes showers and a restroom with a bathtub, boaters cruise up the Menominee River to Marinette to dock at Nestegg Marine. Much smaller than the Menominee Marina, Nestegg has floating docks and 90 slips for 25- to 65-foot boats. Rich Larsen, owner of Manitowoc Marina, bought Nestegg this past February when the Kukuks put it up for sale. As good as Nestegg was, Larsen used the spring and part of the summer to renovate the customer lounge, showroom and ship’s store. “There’s a good team there in place so I felt comfortable adding it as a second location,” Larsen says. “It’s got a good reputation for

slip storage and sales. There’s a good synergy between [Manitowoc Marina and Nestegg].” A lifelong boater who grew up in Door County and has been in Manitowoc since 1988, Larsen was already familiar with the area. “I’ve been doing the 100 Miler for years so I already knew a lot of the boaters,” he says. “And I like the area. It has a lot of good restaurants and taverns.” As to the Nestegg name, former owner Jon Kukuk explains that when he and Susan bought it, “It took all of our nest egg.” The marina has brochures with coupons and guides to local restaurants and destinations. It is also a great place to ask about fishing, including charters, and it has a fish cleaning station next door. Calling ahead is important if visiting during holidays, festivals and such fishing events as the Cabela’s National Walleye Tour Championship that takes place in Marinette in mid-August.

“We’re the ‘real north,’” says Marinette County Tourism Director Butch Kostreva. “You’ve heard of Door County, but Marinette County is the other ‘door’ to Wisconsin. Our economy here and tourism are growing and growing. We have waterfalls, many events and the fishing is awesome. The city is proud of its Menekaunee Harbor Project, which enables more water activities in the harbor and added boating facilities, including boat launches and a few docks. For visitors who have just docked at Nestegg Marine and want some land time in Marinette, the place to start is the rustic Marinette Welcome Center. It’s on the turnoff just west before coming to the bridge that crosses the Menominee River and connects the two “Ms.” Behind the Welcome Center is a bridge leading to the popular Stephenson Island, where visitors will discover a bit of local history at the Marinette County Museum, also known as the Logging Museum. It’s a fun place to see what a miniature logging camp looked like and examine Menominee Indian relics. While there, learn about Queen Marinette, who ran an 1800s trading post on the river, and see the memorabilia from the home of lumber baron/U.S. Senator/newspaper publisher Isaac Stephenson. Also look for the restored Evancheck log cabin. The nearby Peshtigo’s Fire Museum commemorates when the town was destroyed by fire on October 8, 1871. blazed the same day, yet more people died in the Peshtigo fire than in Chicago. Named in honor of the fire, Forgetten Fire Winery sells wines, ciders and non-alcoholic sodas. Stroll over to the Main Street Antique Mall where you’re likely to get lost among collectibles from antiques to mid-century modern finds. While there look for the shop that has local jams, honey and candy. Owned by artist Rusty Wolfe, whose gallery is upstairs, and wife Kim Brooks, the Antique Mall has become an area destination stop. Another fun stop is Simply Charming, a clothing and accessories boutique across the street. No visit to Wisconsin is complete without getting some world-class cheese at Seguin’s House of Cheese. This shop has been around for more than 50 years and sells cheese, ice cream, smoked meats, candies, craft beers and clothing.
While boating into Menominee off Green Bay, the town’s red Menominee North Pier Lighthouse proclaims “come check me out.” The light station is filled with historical information, has great views and a view of where the Menominee River cuts into the Bay. Don’t worry, the steps up through the light station are easy to handle. “At least climb to the second level,” says Michael Kaufman, executive director of the Menominee County Historical Society. “You’ll have a good view of the harbor.” He also suggests visitors stop at the notations on the pier to see where the light station sat at different times. Inside, visitors learn that the original station was lit in 1877; the current structure — though somewhat changed and moved — was lit in 1927 and automated in 1972; it had a Fourth Order Fresnel lens replaced with an acrylic optic lens; and there was an iron catwalk that was removed in 1972.

The Menominee Heritage Museum, housed in the former St. John’s Catholic Church, is also worth a stop. Its artifacts and photos offer a historic slice of life in the area, ranging from centuries-old dugout canoes to WWI and WWII uniforms and pictures. Kaufman and curator Abigail Hoijer are usually on site when the building is open to answer questions visitors may have. Take a break between the lighthouse and museum for lunch at one of the many popular eateries across from the Menominee Marina and Great Lakes Memorial Park. For a tasty, casual lunch try to snag a table at Serving Spoon Café. Pearl Eatery, which specializes in Cajun and Creole dishes, is also a great lunch spot.
A shipyard with a big impact
A fine reason to go up the Menominee River to Marinette is to see a combat ship or two at the Fincantieri Marinette Marine. It’s a somewhat inconspicuous name for a marina unless the boater knows that Fincantieri is an Italian giant in the shipbuilding business with operations throughout the world. The Marinette Marine, started in 1942, began with naval contracts to construct a few barges. It was later bought by Fincantieri, and is now usually referred to as FMM. Following a recent expansion, it now has more than 550,000 square feet of construction and warehouse space. The expansion allows it to produce six Littoral Combat Ships in a serial fashion. “The shipyard is not available for the general public to tour but you can see the ships if you travel about a half-mile up the river,” says Brian Helfert, president of the Menominee Downtown Business Association. As to what there is for folks visiting with normal-size (not ship-size) boats, Helfert says: “There are good restaurants, recreation and several events. There’s something going on every weekend.”

ith locations in Grand Haven and Muskegon, Michigan, Hall’s Sport Center is convenient for Lake Michigan boaters. And with an inland location in Grand Rapids, you can also pay Hall’s a visit even if you’re landlocked. Harold Hall started the boat dealership in 1972 in a two-stall garage. The four Michigan locations combined now total more than 100,000 square feet, offering new and pre-owned boats from popular brands, such as Four Winns, Wellcraft, Scarab, Manitou and Bennington. With this many options, it isn’t hard to find a new or pre-owned model that suits your fancy. The Muskegon location is where it all began. In the early 1980s, Hall’s made a name for itself by selling Century Boats. It was during this time that the dealership found its niche: Fiberglass boats from 17 to 35 feet. And while Hall’s has narrowed in on a segment of the boat market, it has also expanded in space and locations. “We added 25,000 square feet to our Muskegon warehouse last fall,” Hall says. “Now we can rack 517 boats in a heated building [over the winter].” |

The new Muskegon warehouse is on the south side of East Broadway Avenue, while a building on the north side of the street houses pre-owned boats. It was the Muskegon County social services building until Hall bought it about 20 years ago. The storefront now holds 85 boats. Hall’s Sport Center has been in Grand Rapids for more than 25 years, and the store was remodeled 10 years ago. Now the Grand Haven location is following suit and is about to undergo its own renovation. Two years ago, Hall purchased 6.5 acres next to the Grand Haven location. By Spring 2019, that location will add 25 slips on the Grand River for demonstration purposes. Customers will also be able to rent pontoons from the waterfront slips. “Our building is pretty small and it didn’t look like a typical Hall’s Sport Center, but it will in the spring,” Hall says. From a two-stall garage to more than 100,000 square feet combined between four locations, it’s very likely that Hall’s Sport Center has what you’re looking for. ★

Sentimental Journey Home sweet home.

This majestic lady of the Great Lakes has found her way home. Built in 1962 at the original Chris-Craft factory in Algonac, Michigan, Sentimental Journey is a 50-foot Constellation that was hull No. 23 of 30 models built that year. She has a 14-foot, 1-inch beam, a draft of 41 inches and is powered by two 502 C.U.I. Marine Power gas engines. The original owner was an attorney from Dayton, Ohio, who named her Paragon after a popular local restaurant. The boat was docked in the summer and stored in the winter at Algonac Harbour Club, which is the site of the original Chris-Craft factory. Pete and Carol Beauregard, who were one of the youngest Chris-Craft dealers on the Great Lakes and are the owners of Algonac Harbour Club, would admire this classic boat as they boarded their nearby 60-foot Sea Ray. As Pete describes it: “It was one of the most beautiful classic boats I had ever seen, and we dreamed of owning it one day.” That day finally came in 2014 when the owner told Pete he was ready to sell the boat. The Beauregards jumped at the opportunity to own this rare beauty. After a complete restoration, including a new boat hull and interior, the Beauregards now enjoy cruising the Great Lakes and showcasing it at local classic boat shows, along with their three other classic Chris-Craft runabout boats. Sentimental Journey is now housed in a custom-built boathouse at the Algonac Harbour Club, only about 50 feet from where she was originally built and launched — a full-circle, sentimental journey back home!
