Seize the Season D

on’t let the colder months prevent you from exploring coastlines and scratching that boating itch. Even though the Great Lakes are on the brink of freezing and your boat may be tucked away for the winter, there’s no reason why you can’t seize the season by venturing to lower latitudes or booking a charter! Chartering is the perfect vacation alternative, as you can still socially distance while basking in the tropical heat and getting your hours in at the helm. Contributor Heather Steinberger speaks with two charter companies to see why this option is ideal for Great Lakes boaters looking for a safe escape (p. 20). If your boat is out of storage and ready to hit the water, cruise down to Florida’s spectacular Dry Tortugas National Park just west of Key West (p. 42). This park is a history- and scuba-lover’s paradise, with more than 300 shipwrecks and a retired fort that are ripe for exploration. While you’re in Florida, tie up at Gulf Harbour Marina in Fort Myers, Florida (p. 54). This posh community on the Intracoastal Waterway is a launching pad for fantastic boating destinations. And if you decide you love the area, you can buy into the adjoining condominium association, which has features like a private golf, tennis and fitness center. So seize this season by adventuring, relaxing and finding time to spend with family. The staff at Lakeland Boating and I wish you all Happy Holidays and a safe, healthy New Year!

Suzuki Creates Engine System to Remove Microplastics From Water

Suzuki has developed the world’s first microplastics collection system for outboard motors, which filters pollutants from engine cooling water before returning to waterways. The device is designed for easy installation under the cowling of selected Suzuki outboard models 40 hp and up. It works by filtering water after it has passed through the engine’s cooling system and before it’s returned to the body of water. Because of its innovative design, the system does not impact the driving performance or cooling efficiency of the engine. The filtering system is able to collect a wide variety of microparticle pollution, including urethane, nylon and wood chips, which pose a danger to aquatic life. Breaker II Joins NY Fleet, Helps Clear Ice and Prevent Shoreline Flooding

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo recently welcomed the Breaker II to the fleet of boats that helps install the Lake Erie-Niagara River ice boom each year — a series of 22 spans of steel pontoons that stretch the mouth of the river and help prevent large ice formations from forming. “The Breaker II tugboat will play a vital role in generating power and mitigating the impacts of shoreline flooding along the Niagara River,” says Governor Cuomo. “In just a few short months, this boat will help install the region’s iconic ice boom, which will help prevent large ice flows from inhibiting the generation of clean hydro electricity to power our state, and limit ice build-ups that can cause shoreline flooding.” Custom-designed by Bristol Harbor Group for the New York Power Authority, the Breaker II tugboat recently arrived at its home in Buffalo, New York, from the shipyard in Rhode Island. It’s specially designed with a bow made of high-grade steel to cut through ice, and its primary function will be to help install and uninstall the ice boom each year. Hamilton Harbour Welcomes TS Playfair The TS Playfair has provided sailing training and experiences to groups of students for 48 years; the ship will soon make its permanent home in Hamilton Harbour on Lake Ontario, thanks to efforts from the Hamilton-Oshawa Port Authority (HOPA) and the volunteer-run charitable foundation Brigs Youth Sail Training. “We have watched the tremendous redevelopment of the Hamilton Harbour for years and couldn’t think of a better port for TS Playfair where Great Lakes maritime history is celebrated in Canada’s busiest Great Lakes port,” says Brigs Board Chair Francis Clegg, who spent five years as a teenager onboard TS Playfair, rising to the rank of watch officer. Lower Menominee River Delisted as “Area of Concern”

Once one of the 43 most polluted areas on the Great Lakes, the Lower Menominee River in northeastern Wisconsin is no longer an area of concern, thanks to 30 years of efforts to restore the river. For years, coal tar, paint sludge and arsenic were widespread pollutants in the waterway, which flows into Green Bay on Lake Michigan. Industrial regulations and river cleanup helped to restore the waterway, and habitat restoration projects were recently completed as well. Funding for the cleanup was provided by the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. During its restoration, millions of pounds of contaminated sediment and hazardous waste and hundreds of thousands of cubic yards of contaminated sediment and coal tar were removed from the river. The Perfect Vacation

O

ver the last few months, we’ve used this column to explore the impact of the ongoing novel coronavirus pandemic on recreational boating. We’ve looked at how companies adapted to public health guidelines and found innovative solutions to engage with boaters; how Millennials quickly discovered boating in massive numbers; and how the surge in new boaters affected summertime service and towing. Now, as winter arrives in the Great Lakes, we’re turning our attention to an offseason pursuit loved by so many in our community: Chartering. With the rolling thunder of COVID-19 still very much part of daily lives, what does that mean for the charter industry — and for those boaters who seek respite in the lower latitudes when the water gets hard? Reopening in the islands COVID has been brutal for the charter industry. When the pandemic exploded in mid-March, charter companies embarked on a painful, lengthy shutdown. For example, The Moorings stayed shuttered for more than six months, a first in its 50-year history. British Virgin Islands

Even as destinations like Greece, Croatia, Spain and Italy partially reopened in an attempt to salvage the summer season, access was patchy. Americans were able to book charters for about a week, but that ended when U.S. cases spiked. It hurt the newly reopened Bahamas as well. According to Ian Pederson, senior marketing manager for The Moorings and Sunsail, a month’s worth of charters quickly sold out, then the Bahamas shut the doors to Americans again. “People clearly still have an appetite for chartering, even with [the pandemic],” Pederson says. “That’s good news, because a lot will change in the next six to eight weeks, and for the better. The mood feels very different now. There’s optimism.” The first inkling of that temperature change came with the British Virgin Islands’ announcement that it will open its borders to international visitors on December 1. Andrew A. Fahie, premier and minister of finance, shared the news during the launch of the new “BVILOVE” tourism campaign September 21. “Right after that press conference, our phones were ringing off the hook,” Pederson says. “The BVI is our most popular destination, and we think it will be the first domino. Others will follow. Our Bahamian base that serves the Exumas is on our radar to open soon, as is St. Martin.” As destinations open their floodgates to the American market, insiders predict a major shift toward chartering. Those who otherwise might have spent their valuable vacation time at all-inclusive resorts or on cruise ships are recognizing that a private yacht offers a perfect, flexible solution for a much-needed getaway. “A charter vacation is the best social-distance vacation solution,” Pederson says. “You can be as isolated as you wish, and you get to choose if and when you engage with others. That appeals to people right now.” In response to this new trend, The Moorings formed a partnership with CRUISE.COM in August. Website visitors are able to view yacht charter options under “Specialty Cruises,” and travel agents who might have been unfamiliar with chartering now have that information at their fingertips. This isn’t the only trend Pederson and

Despite COVID’s challenges, boaters can still find adventure, relaxation and escape through chartering.

his colleagues are seeing. The other is, unsurprisingly, the arrival of the Millennials. “Bookings for 2021 have been coming in for months, and our demographics shifted five to 10 years younger than usual,” Pederson says. “Millennials are into travel, experiences and influencers — they’re chomping at the bit.” All of this is great news for the charter industry. Yet customers do remain concerned about COVID- 19 and how they can travel as safely as possible. “Airline travel is the biggest hurdle, and we can’t do much about that,” Pederson says. “But once you arrive, we take care of everything.” The Moorings operates its own taxi service, ensuring that there is minimum occupancy and maximum space in each vehicle. Staff members have their temperatures checked daily upon arrival at work; all transactions are hands-off and cashless; each boat is fully sanitized, down to the silverware and bedding; and all provisions are sealed, labeled and dated. Perhaps best of all, briefings are handled prior to travel. “Instead of cramming 50 people into a room at the base, we provide an online orientation and briefing beforehand, which you can do from home,” Pederson explains. “The boat briefing is online as well. It’s a recorded walk-through of your boat, followed by a live Q&A with one of our experts. It’s really cool.” Embracing adventure at home Offseason charter opportunities don’t only exist outside U.S. borders, of course. Some of the most sublime cruising in this hemisphere exists right here at home. Barbara and Vic Hansen started Southwest Florida Yachts in 1984, when they purchased a small existing company with a fleet in North Fort Myers, Florida. After 29 years in that location, the Hansens relocated their charter company to Cape Coral in 2013. Southwest Florida Yachts didn’t see the debilitating long-term shutdowns experienced elsewhere. In fact, Barb Hansen reported that they had a record-breaking summer season. “We were probably up 20% over previous years,” she notes. “Who knew? We didn’t know what to expect when it became so important to stay close to home. All of a sudden, people from the Southeast — and even from Florida — were discovering our wonderful and unique coast, which has been neat to see. People who normally would charter in the Caribbean said, ‘Why don’t we charter here?’

Useppa Island main dock

“Normally August and September are our slowest months, with school starting,” she continues, “but we’ve been crazy busy this year.” During the summer, new charter customers primarily hailed from Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas, Tennessee and Texas. Now, with the arrival of winter and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’s removal of COVID restrictions in September, more northerners are finding their way to Cape Coral. Southwest Florida Yachts is already booking charters well into January and February 2021. Hansen says these customers are either hesitant to go to the islands, or their plans for international vacations and cruises have changed. “They like the idea of being self-contained on a private boat rather than in a hotel,” she explains. “They do worry about what’s open. We’re happy to tell them that everything is open, from marinas to restaurants, and is easy to reach. “We can make all the reservations and have their float plan ready when they arrive,” she continues. “Publix is nearby for provisioning, but they can order groceries, and if they prefer to anchor each night and stay on their own, they can do that.” Like The Moorings, Southwest Florida Yachts has extensive sanitization protocols in place. For those boaters who may have less experience, the company provides classes through its sail and power school, and it offers the services of licensed captains as well. “There are so many options if you want to charter a boat,” Hansen says. “The people who have chartered with us this year said this is exactly what they needed, and that makes sense to me. You’re out there in the sunshine and fresh air, making memories on the water. And out there, life still feels normal.” ★

hat do you give to the boater who has it all? There are a bevy of new products that can make time on the water even more enjoyable and provide a thoughtful gift. The ideas mentioned below represent the latest in marine technology and innovation.

Other features include Fusion-Link, which ties into compatible multifunction displays onboard as well as smart devices. Versatile entertainment system controls can also be achieved through Fusion’s PartyBus network. The Apollo 770 retails for about $649 at FUSIONENTERTAINMENT.COM.

1. Standard Horizon HX890 VHF This top of the line, handheld VHF is chock-full of features any boater will find useful. The floating VHF radio transmits at 6 watts (the most allowed by the FCC in a handheld), is waterproof to military specifications and has a built-in GPS. This internal GPS serves two purposes. First it can act as a handheld GPS with waypoint and route navigation. Second, because it has a GPS built in, the VHF has a digital selective calling (DSC) button on it. In an emergency, you can press this button and it will transmit an automated mayday signal along with a position from the GPS receiver. The radio has an 11-hour operating time with the included rechargeable lithium ion battery. Other features include a water-activated white strobe light, a large and clear display screen, and an FM receiver. At just under $200, this radio has all the features you could want in a handheld. Purchase it at STANDARDHORIZON.COM.

3. Old Town Sportsman Autopilot Kayak The Old Town Sportsman AutoPilot 120 and 136 Fishing Kayaks are on the cutting edge of kayak technology, and the power feature is what truly makes them stand out from the crowd. Powered by a Minn Kota 45-pound thrust trolling motor equipped with i-Pilot remote, this compact, easily deployed and stowed power system allows full remote control and steering. Utilizing a handheld i-Pilot remote via Bluetooth, the kayaks can be steered just like larger boats equipped with i-Pilot. Combined with the foot-controlled rudder, this kayak can turn on a dime, maintain a heading and even stay in the exact spot without anchoring through the use of Minn Kota’s GPS enabled Spot Lock feature. All of this control is possible without having to pick up a paddle. Speed steering and anchoring can all be accomplished through the remote or via a smartphone app. Available in two sizes — 12 feet or 13 feet, 6 inches — the kayaks are ready to fish; just add a battery and a fishing pole. They cost between $3,799.99 and $3,999.99 at OLDTOWNCANOE.COM.

2. Fusion Apollo Fusion named its new line of entertainment systems after the Greek god of music, Apollo. With a range of five entertainment systems within the line, they culminate with the 770. The Apollo 770 has features never before seen in a marine stereo and is touted as “The world’s first touchscreen marine stereo with Apple Play and built in Wi-Fi.” It’s now possible to stream via Wi-Fi (at faster rates than Bluetooth streaming) through any compatible Apple device. You can even stream one audio source to multiple Apollo units simultaneously with universal or independent volume control at each of the units. Because it has Wi-Fi, software updates can be accomplished easily. It even has advanced features such as instant replay, Tune Smart (which plays any song from the beginning, no matter when you change the channel), TuneMix (which creates your own channel from a mix of your favorites) and SportsFlash (receive key plays and updates during broadcast games).

4. FLIR Ocean Scout TK This line of compact, handheld, monocular scopes allows users to see in low-light or no-light conditions via a thermal imager. Rather than relying on increasing ambient light as other, less effective night vision does, the FLIR Ocean Scout series relies on variances in temperature to create stunning imagery in the dark. The units are simple to operate and are submersible. Resolution and effective range increase as you move up from the TK to the 240, 320 and the top of the line Ocean Scout 640. Even with the TK model you can see objects in the water, such as other vessels and aids to navigation up to 130 yards away. The Ocean Scout 640 is capable of detecting and displaying a small vessel up to 3,200 yards away. All these units can record video and stills, and can run on their rechargeable batteries for more than 5 hours. The TK model sells for $599 at FLIR.COM. ★

ASPEN POWER CATAMARANS C108

ASPEN POWER CATAMARANS recently launched its new C108 35-foot Outboard Powered Proa Catamaran. Expanding on the company’s patented hull design, the Aspen C108 features both non-symmetrical hulls and power that provide exceptional efficiency, tracking and performance in all sea conditions. The C108 was inspired in part by current adventure-seeking Aspen owners who wanted the maximum in an eco-friendly cruiser that could also be easily moved to new cruising grounds. By increasing the beam to 10 feet, 8 inches, they kept the overall length under 40 feet, which greatly expanded the interior accommodation space while still allowing the boat to be trailered. A combined boat and trailer towing weight of approximately 12,500 pounds (aluminum trailer) means the C108 can be easily towed by a standard 3/4-ton or larger pickup truck. This versatility is perfect for the Great Lakes, allowing land transport of the vessel to new and different cruising areas. The flexibility of being able to trailer a boat with this much accommodation space is ideal, whether you’re simply hauling out at the end of the season or taking the C108 south for the winter.

Aspen has created an expansive layout for the new C108. The large salon is finished with fine teak by Aspen’s experienced craftsman and has 30% more livable space than previous Aspen models. Full-height wraparound Solar Guard windows provide exceptional visibility from the five person C-shaped dinette and the twin Bentley helm seats, which keep both owners and guests comfortable. The 12-foot-long galley includes an oven-stove combo, microwave, stainless steel sink and multiple Burmese teak drawers. The cabin space is unparalleled for a boat this size and includes three private cabins. Multiple hatches and portholes bring in ventilation and light when not running heat or AC. An expansive head with shower, and a master suite complete with a king-size bed provide owners and their guests with accommodations typically found on much larger vessels. Opening doors and a pop-up window connect the salon aft to the cockpit, which is perfect for relaxing, entertaining or fishing. The swim platform has a removable dinghy rack that can hold an inflatable tender above and between the outboards for easy access while cruising.

DO I NEED BOAT INSURANCE?

YOU’RE PROBABLY NOT required by law to have boat insurance,

but that doesn’t mean you don’t need it. Even if your state does not require you to carry boat insurance, your bank will if you have a loan on the boat. Also, most marinas require proof of liability insurance before they will accept a contract for a slip or a mooring. If you’re required to carry boat insurance, your homeowner policy will generally not be acceptable to them because homeowners policies are usually limited to boats under a certain size or value, and they don’t have the necessary provisions to cover the types of losses that may occur with a boat. Look for “All Risk” policies, which provide coverage for a broad array of calamities that could befall your boat, including theft, vandalism, lightning, fire, grounding or sinking, and lost or stolen belongings. Look for options that will protect your personal items, such as watersports equipment and fishing gear, as well as provide towing coverage in the unfortunate event of a breakdown. Many companies also give you the option for an inexpensive policy that does not insure physical damage to your boat at all, but only provides a specified amount of coverage for your liability to others in the event of an accident, as well as protection from uninsured boaters. Even if you are not otherwise required to have insurance and your boat is not worth very much, you should still consider insuring it. A collision with a small powerboat can cause serious injuries, and even if you are not found liable for those injuries, you could end up spending a significant amount of money in legal fees to defend yourself. Get a quote on several different policies so you can make an informed decision based on the coverages versus the cost. The more your boat is worth, the more important insurance becomes to protect yourself from financial loss.

MARLOW YACHTS

THROUGH THE CENTURIES fine yachts have traditionally been defined

by “fit and finish.” Today’s yachts have achieved high engineering standards, seaworthiness and style. When you choose an enduring traditionally styled yacht, look no further than a Marlow Explorer or Marlow Voyager for the finest examples of “fit and finish.” Quality is the hallmark of all Marlow Yachts. When the yacht is a Marlow the expectations are high. The yachts are built with the finest materials available in the industry, sustainably resourced from global locations and in-house. Marlow hulls and interior bulkhead designs utilize both aviation and offshore marine engineering principals to provide maximum interior volume and performance under all conditions. Interior finishes are as individual as each owner, with highly skilled craftsmen demonstrating the art in joinery, metal work, composites construction techniques and impeccable stonework. The final product is a yacht of unparalleled beauty, performance and seaworthiness, with an established resale record for the past 20 years to be significantly higher than that of competing brands.

Marlow yachts are constructed utilizing a proprietary Strut Keel, designed to protect vital running gear from grounding or debris damage. The twin struts combined with semi-displacement hulls provide superior tracking, positive fuel efficiency and impressive cruising comfort regardless of conditions. Extensive use of Dupont Kevlar, carbon fiber and specifically engineered fabrics combined with proprietary resins and the Full-Stack Infusion process produce inherently stronger and more durable hulls able to take on the seven seas. Only three main component molds are used in the yachts, which means far fewer seams and less ability for water intrusion. All engine rooms are full height across the entire line, enabling easier access for general maintenance. Marlow fuel tanks are a study in efficiency; they are fireproof, rustproof, and enduring fuel-resistant composites provide the highest usable percentage of tankage in the industry. Experiencing a Marlow Yacht for the first time is to fall in love with a yacht unlike any other. WITH GREAT BOATING COMES GREAT RESPONSIBILITY

THE WATER IS AN EXCELLENT place to escape

to — it’s generally peaceful and inviting. But what if the unthinkable happens: You collide with another boat, or hit someone’s wake and your passenger is injured? “Boat insurance might not be top-of-mind when you purchase a boat or personal watercraft, but it should be,” says Rick Stern, Boat Product Manager at Progressive Insurance. “No matter the size or value of your boat, it’s important to be covered. Accidents happen, and when they do, our customers are glad that they had insurance.” Whether or not they’re aware, boaters who remain uninsured are choosing to pay for any damage or injuries related to their boat and passengers out-of-pocket. Sometimes those who opt to not have insurance have a relatively inexpensive watercraft and may figure they’ll take the financial hit if their watercraft sinks or is stolen. No big deal, right? But, say their 16-footer sinks at someone’s dock; it can cost hundreds or thousands of dollars to refloat and remove it. Or if your boat breaks loose from its dock and drifts into your neighbor’s wake boat? The cost to repair your neighbor’s boat might run into the thousands of dollars, and you may be personally liable for that cost if you don’t have insurance. Another factor to consider is personal injury liability. Boat

liability insurance means you’re protected from accidents that injure someone on your boat or another boat. Without insurance, these situations may put the boater and their loved ones at financial risk. If your boat is struck by an uninsured watercraft, injuring you or your passengers, all parties may be on their own and accountable for medical costs unless you have a boat insurance policy with Uninsured Boater coverage. Uninsured Boater coverage is designed to cover injuries caused to you and your passengers by an uninsured boater. These unexpected scenarios are seen far too often. By purchasing a boat insurance policy that includes Liability and Uninsured Boater coverage, you’re protected from the financial burdens of these incidents. The cost? Coverage at Progressive can be had for as little as $100 per year! Progressive Insurance Insures more than 1 million watercraft. To learn more about Progressive’s Boat Insurance, visit PROGRESSIVE . There is simply no better place to relax, enjoy a meal, take in the view or join in on all the cockpit action. Adjoining the alfresco deck, a gourmet galley resides immediately aft to port. This connects through to the luxury salon that offers two opposing lounge areas that can seat six to eight guests in total comfort.

The accommodation plan features a full-beam master suite bathed in natural light from large hull windows with opening portholes, a queen-sized island berth, chaise lounge, walk-in closet and ensuite. Guests are afforded a VIP stateroom with ensuite/day head forward and twin pullman berth cabin to starboard, all in exceptional luxury. The three-sided enclosed flybridge with internal staircase access offers superb all-around visibility and includes a comfortable lounge opposite the main helm to port. The helm station offers twin pedestal-mounted leather seats and places controls, screens and switches close to hand to command the choice of two power and drive options with joystick control: Twin diesel Volvo Penta IPS950 (725-hp/533kW) or twin diesel shaftdrive MAN i6-800 (800-hp/588kW) engines that deliver a smooth, quiet and efficient ride.

tingray Boats raised a lot of eyebrows this year with the introduction of its all-new 269 DC — an innovative and appealing dayboat that was designed specifically with open waters like the Great Lakes in mind. The 269 DC isn’t just longer and taller than every other model in the Stingray lineup, it’s built on a brand-new hull design that features a refined Carolina-style bow, named the Carolina Flare, to deal with steep seas and blowing spray. With plenty of freeboard all the way back to the swim platform, the 269 DC looks like it was made for having fun on the open water. The easiest way to board the 269 DC is via its deep, full-width swim platform, which features a transom pass-through into the cockpit on the starboard side. A near full-width, aft-facing seat across the transom makes the ideal spot to relax and enjoy a beautiful sunset or dry off in the sun after a swim. Step into the cockpit and you’re greeted by a double-wide, forward-facing bench seat, looking toward an L-shaped aft-facing lounge that runs along the port side. There are oversized stainless steel drink holders throughout, while the gunnels accommodate a number of flush-mount fishing rod holders, as well as a 15-gallon aerated livewell that’s neatly integrated into the aft port corner. Along with the insulated fishbox in the floor and the under-gunnel rod storage on the starboard side, there’s a lot here to please the anglers in the family.

ALL THE COMFORTS OF HOME

Stingray’s goal for the 269 DC was to deliver all the comforts of home — starting with all-new upholstery and a remarkable Fusion Apollo MS-RA770 stereo system. Powered by a 500-watt, four-channel amplifier, the Fusion system streams music directly from smartphones and tablets over its own Wi-Fi network rather than via the traditional Bluetooth connection. Where Bluetooth has a limited range of frequencies that it can handle, Wi-Fi transmits everything, so you don’t lose the highs and lows. The difference in sound quality is dramatic, and it’s something boaters will not only hear, but truly appreciate. Download the free Fusion app and you can control everything remotely with a smartphone — or even a Garmin watch. While the high-end stereo is standard, our review boat came with a couple of noteworthy cockpit upgrades in the form of a Kenyon grill and an Isotherm refrigerator — both neatly housed in the starboard-side entertainment center. The console includes a freshwater sink with a faucet and a handy work surface, making it the ideal spot to put together tasty meals for dining alfresco. Stingray’s emphasis on spoiling family and guests is also evident in the surprisingly spacious head compartment that’s concealed within the passenger console. A solid-surface countertop, an elegant residential-style vessel sink, a residential-style chrome faucet and a porta-potti with level indicator all come standard, while a full porcelain head and holding tank are available as upgrades. The exterior of the passenger console provides a thoughtful footrest, stainless steel cup holders and a stainless steel grab handle. Filling out the space is a wide and plushly upholstered companion seat with a fold-down armrest and a flip-up bolster.

neatly arranged, featuring an innovative and contemporary look that really accentuates the boat’s fresh design. The dash panel on our review boat was dominated by a large Garmin GPSMap flat-screen display — one of several singleor double-screen electronics packages available for this model. Given that our test boat came with Yamaha power, a Yamaha 6YC engine display sat next to the big Garmin screen on the helm, with the stereo below it. Nearby, both USB and 12V outlets provide power for charging cell phones and other small devices. To the right of the steering wheel, a row of backlit toggle switches for electrical accessories sit immediately ahead of the throttles, and just above a control pad for the Bennett trim tabs. But the real highlight of the helm is the deluxe stainless steel steering wheel, which comes complete with a silky-smooth turning knob and tilt function. The helm console includes a substantial storage compartment in its base, and between the consoles lies another massive in-floor storage compartment ideal for bulky gear. Overhead, the fiberglass top and tall, walk-through safety glass windshield provide real protection from the elements, allowing Great Lakes boaters to extend their season earlier and later into the year.

THREE LOWER PHOTOS BY CRAIG RITCHIE

FRONT ROW SEATING

Moving forward to the bow, Stingray’s 269 DC continues to impress with sumptuous forward-facing loungers complete with fold-down armrests. Fully upholstered wraparound coaming allows comfortable face-to-face seating for four or five adults and creates a wonderful space for private conversations. Neatly recessed along each side of the bow are a pair of Fusion stereo speakers and additional stainless steel drink holders. There are also two USB and a single 12V outlet on each side, allowing passengers seated up front to keep their cell phones charged and games playing as they should. It’s just another thoughtful touch that reflects the needs of today’s boat buyers and Stingray’s attention to these important details.

Stingray offers a bow filler cushion set as an available option that really enhances the forward seating area. If you have kids, you’re going to want it. And even if you don’t have kids onboard, the cushion set still adds a lot to an already inviting space. GET UP AND GO

Stingray’s 269 DC raises the bar in terms of comfort and onboard amenities. But it’s still a Stingray, and that means you’re going to have a lot of fun underway thanks to its high-performance Z-Plane hull. Pour the power on and the twin Yamaha 200s on the transom of our review boat lifted it out of the hole effortlessly, without any real bow rise to speak of. As you continue pushing the throttles forward, the 269 DC quickly settles into a nice level running attitude, requiring very little trim adjustment. At wide-open throttle our test boat hit 53 mph — plenty fast for a vessel of this size — and it did so while still delivering pleasing fuel economy thanks to the efficiency of the Z-Plane hull and the miserly consumption of the lightweight Yamahas. Add in the optional ZipWake trim control system for increased performance and stability. The all-new 269 DC is Stingray’s biggest boat to date, and it might just be their biggest hit yet. With its flared Carolina bow, versatile layout, thoughtful amenities and sporty handling, there’s a lot to like here. Families in search of a pleasing dayboat that tows easily yet is still capable of exploring the farthest reaches of the Great Lakes will find that the 269 DC checks all the boxes. H

PALM BEACH GT60

T

here are several ways I can introduce the Palm Beach GT60. I thought of making a comparison to those speedy race cars that rip across the Bonneville Salt Flats at breakneck speeds. Of course not as fast, the Palm Beach GT60 gave an exhilarating run, capping out at just over 40 knots during our sea trial. That is fast for a 47,400-pound yacht. Or I could impress you with the fact that I was able to get Mark Richards, CEO and founder of Palm Beach Motor

Yachts, on the phone for a 30-minute call from his office in Australia, a dozen or so time zones away. I could also gush over the beautiful, high-end craftsmanship of the GT60, both inside and out, that would make yacht owners of other brands envious. Or I could say it all. I will admit one thing; when the brand became recognizable in the U.S., I thought the name reflected in some way Palm Beach, Florida. I learned

quickly that these yachts are named for the location where they were built: Palm Beach, New South Wales, Australia (just north of Sydney). Over the years, the Palm Beach brand has received international acclaim for style, function and performance. And it carries those attributes throughout the range of yachts from 42 to 70 feet. The new GT60 is the embodiment of all things good that have come out of Palm Beach Motor Yachts since its inception in 1995.

The man behind the name

A well-seasoned sailboat and America’s Cup racer with hundreds of thousands of miles below his keel, Mark Richards is a driven man, passionate about his craft as he enjoys new challenges and ultimately perfection in his yachts. “It’s not until you get out in the rough sea that you actually realize there is something special about our boats,” Richards says. And special they are. Thanks to the warped hull design (much like a racing sailboat hull that widens midship), the design helps to reduce drag and add stability. Coupled with a sharp bow entry and a 6-degree transom deadrise, the hull cuts the seas and adds speed when on plane. Thanks to a pair of Volvo IPS 1350 powerplants that produce 1,000 hp each (standard engines are Volvo IPS 950 at 725 hp), the GT60 has some impressive “giddy up.” Even though Palm Beach states the cruise speed is around 35 knots burning 75 gph for a range of approximately 355 nm, pull back a bit on the throttles to enjoy the ride and the scenery. There’s still a fresh cut of speed at 27 knots, reducing the burn rate to 47 gph at 1800 RPM. Or enjoy a sunset soiree at 10.8 knots and 9.4 gph. Bottom line, the GT60 will deliver whatever you ask of it.

Build it

Assisting the speed numbers is the overall construction. Utilizing vacuum-infused carbon fiber for the superstructure and deck, and vinylester-infused eglass with carbon sections for strength in the hull, Palm Beach has reduced the overall weight with composite materials. By bonding the bulkheads as well as fixed furniture to the hull and decks, the GT60 is a solid hull with rigidity and strength. During our ride, there was not an ounce of creaking or squeaking from any area onboard. I did ask Richards what he carries with him onboard. “A cell phone of course,” he says, but adds, “I also carry a toolbox in my car,” stating that he still likes to get his hands dirty and is often seen on the factory floor with the workers. Richards takes pride in the fact that he is personally involved in every new build, from initial meeting to final delivery. Understand that this Downeast-style yacht is a far cry from the workboats of yore. With an unbroken sheer and gentle tumblehome that tapers aft, the hull and low-profile superstructure are well proportioned. Underneath the aft deck — which sports a large L-shape settee, a twin post dining table that converts into a sunpad, and a wetbar with fridge, freezer and sink — is a tender garage. Suitable for a 10-foot inflatable with a 20-hp motor, the tender gives the owner options to anchor out yet be able to go ashore to provision or try the local eateries.

The wow factor

Step indoors to the salon and be surrounded by luxurious accommodations. The main deck is all about social interaction — even at a distance. To port is a corner 40

L-shape sofa accompanied by a teak table, and across is a bench sofa. Finished in Ultraleather upholstery, the feel is buttery soft. All woodwork is satin-finished teak, with teak and ebony flooring. Owners can decide on their own fabric choices and wood or non-wood finishes. To note, there’s a hatch to the engine room below the salon. I prefer this arrangement as it keeps the engines out of the elements and allows for maintenance to be completed on those non-boating days, despite the weather. Acoustic sound insulation minimizes engine noise when running. Even though the helm is to starboard, you can fully walk around the doublewide, diamond-stitched helm seat without interrupting the captain or guests. Thanks to the electrically actuated oversized side and aft windows, you can let the breeze in on those crisp days. And if necessary, the starboard window is large enough to step through onto the 20-inch-wide side deck. Even without a door, there is still side access for line handling and docking visibility. In addition to the salon windows there’s a single pane, chemically strengthened, tempered glass windshield affording unobstructed forward visibility. Twin pantograph wipers keep it clean. The salon’s retractable smart TV is housed in the helm seat credenza. Packed with features, the ergonomic pod helm has twin Garmin GPSMAP 17-inch multifunction displays, Volvo Penta throttles, a joystick and engine monitor, a tilting wooden sport steering wheel and more in a carbon fiber dash with a leather-wrapped top. A step-up companion helm seat is to port, perfect for an extra set of eyes. Know that the standard version of the GT60 comes in an open layout, but I would definitely opt for the hardtop from a security aspect, plus it has a center radar mast, integrated window framing — and it’s really cool. Don’t overlook the large bow sunpad and aft deck awning.

Down but not out

Another preference is having the galley down. With the overall design creating an atrium effect, the galley may be down but it’s not out. It maximizes the salon seating areas, keeps meal prep and cleanup away from guests, and can be out of mind when not being used. For the chef, there are Corian counters, Isotherm fridge/freezer drawers, a two-burner Kenyon cooktop, a Miele microwave and a Fisher & Paykel dishwasher. Down here, there’s also access to the two staterooms. Midship is the master, with an athwartship queen berth, a hanging locker, a vanity, a hatch and satin teak cabinetry. The ensuite private head has a separate shower stall. Forward is the VIP with centerline queen berth, a locker and an ensuite head. With an eye on active boaters, the GT60 has the spirit, style and functionality of a high-performance family cruiser. Mark Richard’s pursuit of perfection may now be complete. Just look at the Palm Beach GT60. ★

DRY TORTUGAS: Our vessel, the 52-foot Irwin ketch, Northern Light, was propelled along on a broad reach by strengthening winds. At one point, we counted 65 shrimp boats along the horizon, lit up like Christmas trees by their working deck lights. They were trawling for Key West Pinks, harvested from fisheries between the Dry Tortugas and the mainland, so desirable they are referred to as “pink gold.” Later, it was just the constellations lighting up the moonless night sky. Northern Light was screaming like a freight train, so we shortened sail to delay our arrival until civil dawn lit the morning sky. After clearing Iowa Rock’s flashing green, we entered the Tortugas anchorage, deployed the

hook, and exclaimed “What an incredible ride, and what a remote and beautiful harbor!” We might have been channeling Ponce de Leon, the first European to set foot here in 1513. Then, the islands were originally named Las Tortugas (The Turtles), and later began to appear on navigational charts as the Dry Tortugas to notify mariners that there was no freshwater to be found. But there were plenty of treacherous shoals, so in 1825, a lighthouse was built on Garden Key to warn sailors of the numerous coral reefs scattered throughout the area. Construction of what was to become one of the largest brick structures in the Western hemisphere, called Fort Jefferson, began in 1846.

Designed to fortify the location and control navigation in the Gulf of Mexico, the fort also would protect Atlantic-bound Mississippi River trade. Yet the fort never saw military action — in fact, the 30-year-long construction project was never finished. During the Civil War, it served as a Union military prison for deserters and housed four men implicated in President Abraham Lincoln’s assassination, including Dr. Samuel Mudd, imprisoned for providing medical treatment to the assassin. By the 1880s, having outlived its already limited usefulness, the fort was abandoned by the military. The next incarnation of the Dry Tortugas was a precursor of its mission today, when it was named a wildlife refuge in

Departure was scheduled for sunset from Marco Island’s Capri Pass, for our transit of 94.4 nautical miles. A night arrival at the reef-encircled Dry Tortugas would be foolhardy, so our float plan called for nighttime passage with arrival scheduled shortly after dawn. Darkness fell on the Gulf of Mexico, and we settled into rotating watches of two crew on deck.

When we first visited Dry Tortugas, pre-COVID, the rangers conducted fascinating nighttime lantern-lit tours in period costumes. While the fort is not currently conducting those and is open only during daylight hours, there are plans to revive the Living History evening tours in the summer of 2021. There is space for a few campers on Garden Key at the 12-site primitive campground, so you’ll likely see camping gear and kayaks on the ferry trip to the island. The only service for campers is composting toilets. The park is a pack-in, pack-out area, so take your trash with you on departure. Remember the Tortugas are “Dry” — this means no freshwater, so there are no showers and you must bring your own drinking water. Reservations are recommended; the fee is $15 per campsite per night for up to six people, and fires are limited to charcoal grills. The reservation system, currently first-come-first-

EXPLORING THE PARK Garden Key is the centerpiece of the park, which is open yearround and is home to Fort Jefferson, complete with a moat. The iconic masonry fort — 16 million bricks, give or take — encloses the visitor center, which provides an orientation to the area; here, a fort tour is a must. The parade ground is surrounded by 45-foot-high walls and features remnants of the old officers’ quarters, barracks, ammunition magazines and a restored hotshot furnace. If you can’t come on your own boat, you can visit the park by seaplane with Key West Seaplane Adventures or the Yankee Freedom III National Park Ferry, both from Key West. Quiet hours are from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. (meaning no generator use in the harbor or on land), during which time you are also asked to observe a dark sky/no bright lantern custom — well worth it when you can see the stars without interference of ambient light. Pets are only allowed on Garden Key, and in that case must be leashed.

SOCIAL DISTANCING IS THE NORM While not the least-visited National Park in the contiguous 48 states — that distinction goes to Michigan’s Isle Royale National Park in Lake Superior — the Dry Tortugas is among the least visited, and one of the few island National Parks. In fact, it encompasses seven undeveloped islands nestled among coral reefs and shipwrecks. The ideal way to see the breadth and depth of the park is to come on your own boat and anchor in Garden Key’s harbor for several days of dinghy exploration to the other six islands, which are not usually visited by day-trippers.

If you come on your own craft, the most direct route is from Key West; you’ll head just over 57 nautical miles west, passing by the Marquesas Keys about 20 nautical miles into your trip. Stop there only if the weather is ideal, as the surrounding low islands will provide only partial protection and the anchorage is very shallow — you don’t want to end up like the infamous Atocha, shipwrecked here. NOAA Nautical Chart No. 11438 will help you keep in good water. Once you’re securely on the hook at Garden Key’s anchorage, take your dinghy in to pick up your permit at the Garden Key Visitor Center or park headquarter’s office. The vessel registration is free, but you’ll need a $15, seven-day pass for each crew member. Any kayaks brought on the ferry must also receive permits at the office. There, you can pick up information on restricted areas within the park, scope out hiking trail maps and check out general park information. Two islands — Hospital and Long Keys — are

closed year-round, and visitors should remain 100 feet offshore of these islands. You may also experience some seasonal closures of delicate areas due to bird nesting, and should always refrain from taking shells, corals, sea fans, or any shipwreck artifacts.

UNDERWATER PARADISE As the Dry Tortugas’ lead ranger of interpretation, education and volunteers, Curtis Hall’s love affair with the park goes way back. A native of Marathon in the Florida Keys, he first visited the Dry Tortugas when he was 3 years old on his father’s charter fishing boat. Hall explains that the Dry Tortugas is the healthiest part of the 200-milelong Florida Keys Reef Tract, the only living barrier reef in North America, and anchors its western end. With 99% of the park underwater, and part of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, snorkeling and diving are big all year long; however, Hall notes “Summer brings 80plus feet of underwater visibility, so snorkeling and diving are at their absolute best then.”

Over 300 shipwrecks lie within the park’s 100 square miles, and many are perfect for snorkelers, with some sites as shallow as 6 feet. Many historic wrecks were carrying building material for the park, which can still be spotted laying on the sandy bottom, and the surrounding areas feature an abundance of sea fans, corals and marine life. Hall knows his underwater neighborhood, as he also serves as deputy park dive officer. With so many wrecks in the park, it’s hard to pick favorites, but Hall says “My top spots for snorkeling are at the south end of Loggerhead Key, nearby Little Africa Reef, and our most famous and brilliant wreck, the ill-fated Windjammer.” As corals are in decline globally, you’ll be heartened by a visit to Pulaski Shoals in the northeast corner of the park, where Staghorn corals grow 100 yards thick in 8 feet of water — a truly incredible sight. Ranger Hall’s background includes serving as a Navy Special Operations Diver and, as an expert on the subject, he

recommends divers head for the Texas Rock mooring sites and the Maze. Remember to stick to the designated swim areas or use a dive flag if you venture beyond them. In 2021, look for the introduction of a submerged snorkel trail right off Garden Key, complete with descriptive markers and, at a future point, a planned underwater Heritage Trail designed for diving. Ranger Hall notes the attraction of the park varies by season. Birding enthusiasts will flock here in spring and fall, when the Dry Tortugas are on the principal flyway between North America and South America for migratory birds, while gulls, terns and other shorebirds winter here. Between mid-January and mid-October, as many as 100,000 sooty terns nest on Bush Key — its rookery is visible with field glasses from the fort. They share the island with 10,000 breeding brown noddies. You can watch both feed by capturing fish and squid from the sea in mid-flight. Train your binoculars on magnificent frigate (man-o-war) birds,

roseate terns, and masked and brown boobies. In spring, fishing is a big draw, with grouper season starting in May, and amberjacks, wahoo and tarpon rounding out the attraction for anglers. Marine science is conducted in and around the Dry Tortugas year-round, with the Tortugas reef complex supporting a wealth of marine life. Green, loggerhead and hawksbill sea turtles can be seen in the waters, as well as a wide variety of colorful reef fish. Sponges, sea fans and Staghorn corals are as thick as forests in some areas. The Dry Tortugas’ 100 square miles of warm, shallow underwater wonders provide a reef-lover’s and snorkeler’s delight in locations too numerous to list. My personal favorite is Loggerhead Key — and Ranger Hall agrees. “Where else can you lay on a pristine sand spit, with only birds around, not a soul in sight?” he says, “Or snorkel and see an 18th-century anchor lying undisturbed on the bottom?” Curtis Hall’s recommendation is all I need for another trip back to the Dry Tortugas. ★

Tawas Bay locals often tell visiting boaters to get to the Point. Rude as that may sound, it’s not an insult at all but, rather, friendly advice about a favorite nautical gathering spot. Not that anyone could miss the Point — Tawas Point, that is. Touted as the “Cape Cod of the Midwest,” it’s a hooked spit that juts out into Lake Huron and is home to the 183-acre Tawas Point State Park. Located on Michigan’s Sunrise Side, three hours north of Detroit, the narrow, sandy peninsula is popular with campers, boaters, day-trippers, hikers, kiteboarders, cyclists, swimmers, beach buffs and birders alike. It’s a real hotspot for birds as well, especially during late spring and fall migrations when thousands stop to rest and refuel. Nearly 300 species have been identified, including high concentrations of migrating warblers. Monarch butterflies also mass at the Point during their annual migration in late August or September. “We love to boat there — it’s a beautiful destination,” says Lisa Felice, a Metro Detroiter whose family caravans to the Point in bowriders from their summer homes near Au Gres, 10 nautical miles south. “We drop anchor and enjoy the sights. We have drinks and snacks and watch the kitesurfers and sailboats, and you can walk along the shoreline. We always bring Frisbees and play water games.” Beyond the enclosed pavilion and bathrooms, picturesque Tawas Point Lighthouse rises nearly 70 feet above Lake Huron, the only true Victorian-era style lighthouse station on the Great Lakes. “It’s fun to walk around it,” Felice says of the historic structure that dates to 1876. “And sometimes they offer tours.”

East Tawas State Harbor

With two marinas next to the state park — Tawas Bay Yacht Club and Jerry’s Marina — Tawas Point is just one of the highlights of Tawas Bay, an attractive, family friendly getaway for generations of boaters and anglers. The bay serves as the scenic backdrop for two cities, Tawas City and East Tawas, with a combined year-round population of about 5,000 and a wide range of services and amenities for boaters. Just a few miles from Tawas Point, the newly renovated East Tawas State Harbor is the region’s boating hub and gateway to town. A Harbor of Refuge, it’s adjacent to a public swimming beach and a short stroll from the city’s charming downtown, lined with casual restaurants and dozens of shops from kitschy to upscale. “For a small community, we’ve got a lot to offer,” says Rebecca Buchanan, owner of the specialty children’s boutique, Chick’n Dots, and executive director of the East Tawas Business 48

Association. “You don’t have to fight with traffic, long lines or big crowds. We take pride in our friendly hometown feel.” The full-service East Tawas State Harbor, open from early May to late September, boasts all-new floating docks and infrastructure; free, upgraded laundry facilities; and a new boaters’ lounge with Wi-Fi access and a large-screen TV. Of the 135 slips (ranging from 30 to 60 feet), about five dozen are available for transients. “We can take any size boat,” says William Stoll, harbormaster since 1978, citing the marina’s long, floating broadside pier. East Tawas is a popular port for boaters from the Bay City and Saginaw Bay region, as well as nearby Au Gres, Stoll says, and it’s also a stopover for boaters en route to Mackinac Island and those navigating the Great Lakes portion of the “Great Loop.” Stoll, also a local high school teacher, handpicks his marina staff, and touts his crew’s friendly and accommodating service. will occasionally drive boaters to local golf courses, including the renowned Red Hawk, an Arthur Hills design located five miles away. Some boaters trailer their boats to East Tawas and use the DNR boat launch a quarter-mile north of the marina. It’s next to Tawas Beach Resort, where Bikini’s Beach Bar, with live weekend entertainment, functions as party central for tourists and locals. Think buckets of beer and boat music. Free docking is available for patrons arriving by boat; there’s also a rental hut, Sunnybunns, for jet-skis and other watercraft. Fishing from the pier is another favorite local pastime. At the foot of the East Tawas dock is a 14-mile walking and bike path that winds along the lakeshore south to Alabaster Township and north to the Tawas Point Lighthouse. Steps from the boat dock, Harbor Park hosts Blues by the Bay and summer festivals that celebrate crafts, beer and wine. Next door is East Tawas City Park, a very popular RV campground, beach and playground.

A stroll along Newman Street

Tawas Bay historical tidbits*

■ The Tawas region’s long fishing history started in the 1500s when Native Americans used dried fish for food and trade. By the mid-1800s, European fishermen arrived and began shipping fish from Tawas Bay and Lake Huron mostly to Boston, New York and Chicago. Commercial fishing grew in the region, with more than 13 major fishing companies around Tawas and Oscoda in the 1930s. Just one remains today, Lixey Fish Market, about four miles north of downtown East Tawas. Sport fishing in Tawas Bay for species such as perch, walleye, steelhead and smallmouth bass remains a popular pastime. ■ Logging played a critical role in the region’s development. Between 1854 and 1891, more than 3,000 men worked in Tawas-area forests, harvesting an estimated 4 to 5 billion feet of white pine. Today, the revitalized Huron National Forest covers much of the area. ■ The Tawases evolved from 19th-century mill towns to 20th-century tourist towns thanks to the Detroit and Mackinac Railway that operated for nearly a century and brought excursion trains full of vacationers. ■ Before the advent of modern refrigeration, the annual Tawas Bay ice harvest was an important winter industry. The ice, noted for its purity, found a ready market, with huge quantities shipped to Detroit and Chicago. At peak production, Tawas Bay produced enough ice to fill 100 railroad cars a day. It was still being harvested to keep old-fashioned ice boxes cold prior to World War II. *adapted from Iosco County Historical Museum

The vibe is pleasant but not pretentious along the main shopping drag, Newman Street, where wide, brick-paved sidewalks are lined with flower-filled cement urns and white benches. Few can resist the old-fashioned Mooney’s Ben Franklin store, chockablock with souvenirs, T-shirts, swim toys, sewing supplies, home décor — a little bit of everything. By contrast, O’Connor’s offers a curated collection of resort wear, home furnishings, Merino wool fashions, Pendleton blankets and other high-end items in a calm, soothing atmosphere. Grab a Gooey Brownie coffee and gourmet items or wine for your galley at Brew Krew Kitchen and Bath (don’t miss the Candy Shop tucked inside). Klenow’s Market is the place for meats, including homemade jerky in more than a dozen flavors, such as bacon, buffalo, elk and jalapeno beef. Blue Bear Jewelry carries a selection of sterling silver, natural gemstones and Fordite, also known as Detroit agate or Motor agate, which is vintage auto paint slag. And you never know what you’ll find at Uncle Winnie’s Antiques & Collectibles, one of several Tawas antiques shops. Tawas Bay Art Gallery showcases local artists and hosts painting classes. Fun places to “park” and people-watch from a patio include Barnacle Bill’s for burgers and drink specials, and Mr. Jack’ss Sports Bar and Grill (try a Tawas Bay ‘Tini, oven-roasted sandwich and sweet potato fries). Across the street, Mangos Mexican Cuisine and Tequila Bar is a favorite for margaritas. At the front end of Newman Street, just up from

the harbor, a trio of shops satisfies even the most demanding sweet tooth. Tawas Bay Fudge and Ice Cream Company offers more than 30 ice cream flavors and 14 kinds of handmade fudge, including lemon fudge. Among the treats at Village Chocolatier are chocolate-dipped blueberries, raspberries and other fruit and novelty items, such as chocolate cherry mice and M&M-studded “Sunrise Fish.” And Marion’s Dairy Bar has been dispensing ice cream sundaes, shakes, splits and homemade cones for 75 years. A few blocks south of Newman, the friendly staff at Nordic Sports shares tips about area recreation spots and sells outdoor gear and clothing. Street festivals such as a Tuesday Night Live music series, craft fairs and a car show fill the city’s summer calendar. There’s also a two-screen movie theater.

A bit more to see

A short walk south, the Iosco County Historical Museum showcases local history with displays about Native Americans, fishing, logging, gypsum, tourism and more (see sidebar on page 50). Artifacts range from a bearskin rug and coat to antique toys and a vintage hearse. Hours are limited to Friday and Saturday or by appointment; call ahead to check availability. East Tawas shares Tawas Bay with its sister community, Tawas City, just down the road. It’s home to several beach parks, a Saturday farmers market at Gateway Park, Tony’s Tacos stand, two bike rental shops (Clara-Bella’s and Huron Sports & Fitness), and a Walmart with a million-dollar view of Lake Huron and Tawas Bay.

Marion’s Dairy Bar

There’s lots of buzz about one of the city’s newest additions, Boathouse Beer Company & Boozery, which offers a creative menu, handcrafted beer and cocktails, and a pretty patio view of the bay. Considering the sister cities’ myriad attractions, boaters will find that one day isn’t enough to experience all there is to offer in and around Tawas Bay. ★

Original 1927 Sears kit home on the shores of Lake Charlevoix.

W

ith the amount of care poured into this Sears kit home during its construction in 1927, it’s no wonder that it now serves as a perfect family gathering space. Making this Boyne City cottage even more unique is that it’s one of very few Sears homes to use stone on the exterior, likely gathered from the property when the foundation was dug. Located on the shores of Lake Charlevoix, with 277 feet of private frontage, the three-bedroom home exudes charm from the moment you step onto the front patio. Inside, a cozy living room with a wood-burning fireplace opens up to a dining room with custom built-in cabinets and an updated kitchen. An addition was built around 15 years ago, and each new space maintains the same charm as the original part of the home; you’ll notice those added details in the master bedroom, which features the home’s original exterior brick, a vaulted ceiling and beautifully trimmed windows. Another add-on was the sunroom,

which homeowner Nancy Wright uses to house her collection of plants during the cold months. “I had never had a garden before,” Wright says, who along with her husband purchased the home nearly 30 years ago. “I just started gardening and that’s my favorite part of living here — I thoroughly enjoy it.” A guest house up on the hill offers family and friends a private retreat with a lofted sleeping area, bathroom and porch with a fabulous view. At the lakefront, a gradually sloping lake bed can accommodate a deepwater dock. “When we first moved in, our grandkids were probably 6 and 8 years old, and they loved to come here and swim,” Wright says. “As they got older, they had their boats and Sea-Doos here. “We’ve enjoyed it a lot and have done a lot of entertaining on the back patio,” she continues, “and in the summer, we watched boats go by while enjoying cocktails on the front porch.” ★

Gulf Harbour Marina Explore Florida’s Intracoastal Waterway.

S

et on what used to be a 500-acre gladiolus flower farm on the banks of the Caloosahatchee River, Gulf Harbour Yacht & Country Club boasts some of the best real estate on the Intracoastal Waterway. Founded in 1995, Gulf Harbour Yacht & Country Club was soon developed to include a marina, adjoining condominium association for each of its 186 slips, the Country Club, and eventually 23 different neighborhoods that range in price from $175,000 to multi-million dollar properties. Along with its posh surroundings and country club’s private golf, tennis and fitness center, Gulf Harbour Marina’s prime attraction is its location and access to incredible dayboating or cruising adventures. “Located on the Intracoastal Waterway, you can cruise for hundreds of miles in protected waters to dozens of destinations with marinas, hundreds of anchorages [with] day trips to the beaches, restaurants and resorts,” says Greg Callaway, founder of Gulf

Properties, LLC, which exclusively sells real estate and boat slips in the Gulf Harbour community. Callaway’s family cruises the waterways extensively on their 44-foot Tollycraft powerboat. “Gulf Harbour Marina is only about five miles to the Gulf of Mexico and the barrier islands of Fort Myers Beach and Sanibel-Captiva,” he adds. “Or, if an extended cruise is on your charts, head straight south to Key West and the Florida Keys or across the state on the Intracoastal to the East Coast and the Bahamas.” While the country club is private, the marina is open to transient boats, and offers concrete floating docks, a diesel and gas fuel dock, and is staffed seven days a week. Its 186 deep-water slips can accommodate boats up to 97 feet in length. Ranked the No. 1 place to retire by U.S. News and World Report, it’s easy to see why Fort Myers — and Gulf Harbour, in particular — is such a relaxing and delightful paradise to explore. ★

CLASSIC CRAFT

Sixties Cabin Cruiser

Our 1960 Sandusky Blue Water 16 underwent a total restoration 10 years ago. It’s powered by twin 1960 Merc 400s. During the motors’ restoration, we totally rebuilt the power heads. This is a very comfortable boat while underway, and the twins give it great performance and sound. The Sandusky Blue Water model is known for its outboard power with cruiser comfort. The small trunk cabin provides an all-weather comfort shelter and features a ventilating forward window. Colorful foam rubber vinyl-covered berth pads and an upholstered pilot seat are standard equipment, as is the mahogany frame flying bridge windshield. This model is fully floored, including areas under the berths, to provide exceptional storage in a boat of this size. On the most recent trip to Michigan, while we were cruising the Chain of Lakes on our wooden boat, we dined on shrimp and beer. My wife, Betty, and I agree that the most fun part of owning this vintage molded birch boat is the accolades we receive from admiring people no matter if we are trailering it, at a wooden boat show, or on the water. We limit the amount of trailering miles we subject the boat to in order to control the wear and tear on the wooden structure; molded boats are extremely difficult to repair should a hole get punched in the bottom. ★ — John & Betty Scheurer, Mansfield, OH ADD YOUR BOAT! Email KBUSH@LAKELANDBOATING.COM if you have Classic Craft with a great story to share!
