Savor the Season

OCTOBER 2015 | VOLUME LXIX, NO. 10

A

s the fall colors start to emerge, and the summer boating season nears its end in the Great Lakes, many boaters deem this transitional period as the perfect time for a “DIY” renovation project. From changing out your battery chargers (pg. 20), to installing new electronics (pg. 22), and polishing your boat to a “shipshape shine,” (pg. 23), our columnists are here to inspire your next renovation project. And get that boat ready; just in time for a final, autumn cruise up to Lake Superior’s Keweenaw Peninsula. Houghton and Hancock, Michigan (pg. 42), located in the Upper Peninsula, offer a bounty of year-round recreational opportunities. Be prepared for stunning, scenic beauty. Known as the “Copper Country,” these bustling towns offer fantastic sightseeing, fascinating copper history and the fall color rivals anywhere else in the country. Lakeland’s editor, Kate Bush, also had the opportunity to cruise up to the Upper Peninsula this past August. 1995 Lakeland Boating advertisement. She hopped aboard the all-new Tiara Q44 with the Slikkers family, during the annual Walstrom Marine rendezvous in northern Michigan (pg. 38). She was able to meet more than 100 of Walstrom’s customers for a few days of fun up in St. Ignace, Mackinac Island and Drummond Island. In this issue, we introduce a great new boat on the market: the Cruisers Yachts 60 Cantius, tested by contributor Captain Richard Nocenti (pg. 30). The debut of this new flagship yacht, dubbed the “reigning queen of their fleet,” is the largest addition to the Cantius lineup. Lakeland contributor Heather Steinberger sits down with the leadership from the iconic boat building company, Sea Ray, to celebrate their 56th anniversary and discuss how they persevered through the worst recession of our lifetime (pg. 34). Check out the fascinating profile on this iconic boat builder. I hope your last few weeks of the boating season are spent on the water and enjoyed with friends and family! See you on the water, Bing

From Fond-du-Lac, Wisconsin-based Mercury Marine comes two new products: The Flo-Torq propeller hub system and the Active Trim system. The Flo-Torq is designed to improve shift noise and vibration on high-horsepower outboards that use a heavy-duty 1.25-inch propeller shaft. This new hub system is a first of its kind to employ Mercury’s new Soft Shift Rubber (SSR) technology, which delivers a 25 percent improvement in shift noise and vibration. Mercury Marine also introduced its new Active Trim system, which delivers instant, effortless trimming of boat engines. Designed to suit entry-level and expert boaters alike, Active Trim simplifies boat operation, while improving engine performance and decreasing fuel costs. Tests completed on a broad range of boats indicate fuel savings of 14 to 54 percent by running in the auto mode provided by Active Trim, versus fully trimmed down in manual mode. DON’T HESITATE TO RENOVATE by Capt. Frank Lanier

Stay Charged How to properly select and install battery chargers. aintaining your vessel’s batteries is crucial, both for performance and increased service life. Keeping them properly charged may be an issue, however, particularly for vessels that see limited or sporadic use. A great way to monitor and promote good battery health is by installing a “smart” battery charger. Here’s a look at the basics, from selection to installation.

Select a charger

Battery charger with drip protection.

Battery charger installation.

The last place you want to skimp is when selecting a charger; marine-grade batteries aren’t cheap and can be easily destroyed with improper charging. Go with a quality, marine-grade unit, ideally one built to American Boat And Yacht Council (ABYC) and UL standards. Look for smart chargers that provide numerous charging options and features, including the ability to select between different types of battery technologies (i.e. wet cell, absorbed glass mat and gel). As uncontrolled combustion is not our friend, battery chargers installed on gasoline-powered vessels must be labeled as being ignition protected. For PWCs and other open watercraft, you’ll want to go with a sealed, waterproof charger. Regardless of what you choose, stay away from those el cheapo automotive chargers from your local shop; they’re not designed for marine use and can cause a multitude of problems, from stray current corrosion to shock hazards. Always consult the manufacturer’s instruction when sizing your charger, but a general rule of thumb is to choose one with an output that’s at least 10 percent of your battery (or bank) capacity. For example, if you have a 300Ah (amp hour) battery or bank, you’d want a 30-amp charger. If you can’t find an exact match based on the above, a charger with a little more output is better than one that’s too wimpy.

Figuring out where to mount your charger can be an exercise in compromise. The best option is a cool, dry area with adequate ventilation. A higher location is generally best, as it provides better ventilation and protection from the corrosive humidity of the bilge. You’ll want to avoid high temperature locations — such as your engine compartment — if possible, although this can be difficult on smaller boats with limited options. Chargers should be installed as close to the battery or bank as practical. Shorter leads mean less installation cost, less voltage drop (which we’ll discuss in a moment) and increased charger performance over the life of the unit. That being said, they should not be mounted directly over the batteries (particularly wet cells), which produce corrosive gases while charging and can quickly damage a charger above them. Once you’ve picked a suitable spot, it’s time to mount the

LAKELANDBOATING.COM

charger. For smaller chargers mounted to a thick bulkhead or structure, screws are an acceptable option. If the charger weighs more than a few pounds, it should be through-bolted. Regardless, use marine-grade stainless steel for all mounting hardware.

Get wired Next up is connecting the charger, which involves the installation of both AC (to power the charger) and DC wiring (between the charger and battery). DC wiring should be sized according to the manufacturer’s recommendations, which is based on the distance between the charger and battery. This measurement is “round trip” length (i.e. the full length of the negative and positive wires added together). The longer the wire run, the larger diameter wire you’ll need to offset loss due to voltage drop — a loss of power resulting from the use of wire that’s too small for the run. Using smaller diameter wire than recommended can both decrease the battery’s charge voltage and increase charging time. Wire runs should be routed as direct as possible, and provide support and chafe protection as needed. Wire-to-wire connections should be made using marine-grade butt splices, preferably those with heat-shrink tubing. Never use wire nuts or electrical tape joints, both of which will eventually fall off, leaving exposed, energized connections. If the charger DC wire terminates in spring clamps or alligator clips, cut them off and replace with proper, marine-grade ring terminals. For smaller craft without permanently installed AC systems, hooking up the AC side can be as simple as plugging the battery charger into a suitable extension cord. For a more permanent installation where the charger is the only AC-powered item onboard), another option is to install a grounded AC power inlet (such as the Marinco 15A Battery Charger Inlet), which accepts a standard extension cord plug. If your boat already has an AC system installed, plugging the charger into a convenient outlet (if one’s nearby) may be an option. If not, you’ll want to power it from the main AC distribution panel using marine-grade, multi-stranded, three-conductor AC wiring. Pick an unused circuit breaker of the amperage called for by the charger manufacturer (typically 15 to 20 amps) and connect as per the instructions. Practice safe wiring by making sure all AC power sources — including inverters and generators — are off and disconnected before starting any work. When all connections have been made (and with the AC power off), make the final charger connections to the battery and verify that the installation is complete. Once that’s done, all that’s left is energizing the AC circuit, powering up the charger and basking in the seductive glow of electric success. ★

ELECTRONICS by Glenn Hayes

Do it Yourself oat shows are a great place to shop the latest and greatest marine electronic equipment. Most major manufacturers use shows — such as the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show — to debut and show off their latest wares. As technology advances, the new equipment displayed has become increasingly sophisticated, yet easy to install. A boat owner, with even just a smidge of technical savvy, can install most of the new products. If you can read the manual — and it’s highly recommended that you do — chances are that the installation of most of these new tech products can be a weekend “DIY” project.

With the advent of a plug-and-play communications standard called NMEA 2000 (N2k) — used for connecting marine electronics and sensors aboard a vessel — it is now much easier to add equipment to your boat. In some cases, you simply plug drop cables (that attach to your sensor, module or display) into a backbone cable (think of it as a spine or main line that everything plugs into and interconnects all your electronics). In many instances, the only other connection is to a power supply. Some new products, and some debuting at the Fort Lauderdale show, have even eliminated the need for interconnecting at all, and work as stand-alone devices. One such line of products is the new VHF radios from Icom (ICOMAMERICA.COM). The IC-M324G and the IC-M424G are two full-functioning VHF radios that have GPS built in. Buying one of these radios now means that you can install by simply hooking power to it and plugging in your antenna. This does away with the need for having to connect the radio via wires to your external GPS or chartplotter. It also allows position information on your Digital Selective Calling (DSC) feature. This is the button under the red flap on the radio that, when pressed, transmits an automatic distress signal with your vessel’s identification number. And now, thanks to the internal GPS, it also transmits your position. All this is done automatically and is completely self-contained.

Read the instructions Another new product on display at the Fort Lauderdale show — that will allow you to wow your friends with your installation savvy — is Lowrance’s new three-dimensional

LAKELANDBOATING.COM

StuctureScan (LOWRANCE.COM). With displays looking more like something you’d see on an intergalactic space ship, this product gives you clear 3D images of the terrain below your boat, in a format that is easy to read and interpret. This innovative, new technology will connect to current NNS Evo2 displays. StructureScan consists of a module (a small electronics box containing all the hardware), which connects directly to the display or backbone via a drop cable. It also comes with a specialized transducer that simply plugs into the module. The toughest part of installing this new technology is mounting the transducer correctly (though it’s easy if the installation manual is followed carefully). This technology isn’t cheap, but the simplicity of installation can save you money if you do it yourself. Garmin’s Pantopix Transducer (right) and one display

See for yourself Infamous for its simple user interface, Garmin (GARMIN. COM) also has some incredible technology that is easy to install and interconnect. Its new Pantopix “All Seeing Sonar” allows you to see the water and structure around your boat in a 3D, real-time forward or down view (depending on transducer mounting). It even has the ability to show bait or lure as it sinks to the bottom, while fish swim near it — all with impressive clarity and ease of interpretation. This system is easy to install and can connect to any of the new multi-function displays, from Garmin’s 721/741 models, to the 8000 series. By following the simple instructions, and basic plug and play interface, this new technology is a snap to install. If you plan on visiting the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show, be sure to make your way to the electronics pavilion to see this amazing technology for yourself (and note how easy it is to add it to your boat). Be careful, though — once your friends see what you’re capable of doing on your boat they will be calling you to troubleshoot their own equipment. ★

ack in the day, fiberglass was hailed as the “wonder material” for boats; best of all — they told us — it never needed looking after. But the times have changed, and fiberglass does indeed need to be looked after. One of the best things that you can do for your boat each year is to polish the topsides. A good coat of wax protects the boat, makes dirt easier to wash off, keeps the boat looking smart and enhances its value. Here’s how to get a shine that will be the envy of the marina.

ASK THE EXPERT by Elizabeth Altick

Stop the Thief! McGards’ Nicole Wade describes simple ways to prevent engine, propeller and trailer wheel theft. LB: How serious is the problem of theft in the recreational marine industry?

LB: What should I do if I lose my McGard ID Registration card and need a replacement part?

Wade: Since it takes minimal time to remove propellers, stern drives, outboard motors and lower units, theft is a growing problem. These items have always been a target for theft because they are extremely valuable and in demand.

Wade: If you have misplaced your McGard ID Registration Card — which was included with your lock set when originally purchased — please contact McGard customer service during normal business hours: Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST at 1-800-444-5847.

LB: What parts are most likely to be stolen? CONTACT McGard LLC 3875 California Rd. Orchard Park, NY 14127 716-662-8980 MCGARD.COM

Wade: Trailer wheel and tire theft is always common. We are seeing an increase in thefts of outboard motors and propellers, and lately, there has been a surge of thefts of lower units, particularly in the southeast. Luckily, we manufacture locks that protect all of these items. LB: Where does theft mostly take place: in water, on land or in storage?

LB: What materials are used to make the locks?

Wade: Our Stern Drive & Outboard Motor Locks are made from stainless steel. Our Propeller Locks are constructed of naval brass and hardened stainless steel. Lastly, our Wheel Locks and Trailer Lug Nuts are machined from high-quality steel, through-hardened and then triple-nickel chrome plated.

Wade: There’s no specific place a thief prefers to work — it could happen anywhere. Boats left unattended at the dock or in storage are the most vulnerable, but we have heard of motors and props stolen while the boat is in the water, as well. LB: How does your engine lock work?

Wade: For most applications, simply replace one of the stock nuts [on your engine] with a McGard Lock Nut, using our special key tool. These locks are designed with a free-spinning collar; it turns if it’s attacked by gripping tools, without loosening the lock. This design provides excellent security and protects against costly theft. LB: How does your trailer wheel system work?

rand Banks is expanding its Downeast Eastbay lineup, and, considering how impressive its existing 46-, 50-, and 55-foot models are, there’s reason for celebration. Scheduled to launch this fall at the Newport Boat Show, the new 44 Eastbay SX is the smallest member of the Eastbay family. But don’t assume that this newcomer is small on luxury, performance, or styling — that’s just not the Eastbay way. The 44 Eastbay SX topside sports a distinctive but graceful look. An elegant sheerline rises dramatically to the bow, while steep topsides and nearly plumb stern give the 44 a “shippy” look. A large aft cockpit serves as the premier outside entertaining space, clad in teak decking and plush, comfortable seating. The 44 Eastbay SX is powered by twin Volvo IPS 600 pod drives, each of which is mated to a Volvo D5 435-horsepower turbo diesel. This means owners will not only appreciate joystick steering controls, but also the inherent efficiency and speed offered by this power train. Grand Banks expects the new 44 Eastbay to top out in the 35-knot range, with cruise speeds in the mid to high 20s, depending on how efficiently

you want to cruise. That’s fast for a boat this size and type, in case you were wondering. What this means is that you’ll be able to cover more cruising area in less time, so you can expand your weekend and vacation exploration radius. The 44 Eastbay SX is available with a standard 2- or optional 3-cabin layout, fitted with warm, rich and bright interiors trimmed in Malaysian teak, leather and stone. The master stateroom is forward in both layout schemes, fitted with a large island berth and its own head and enclosed shower. One or two guest cabins sit aft of it, depending on layout, and they share a common head/shower that’s accessed via a central landing. The main salon features a galley up to starboard behind the helm seating, which enhances serving guests in the cockpit — and at the expansive C-shaped dinette — to port inside the salon. “The 44 Eastbay fully delivers the best of both worlds,” says Mark Richards, CEO of Grand Banks. “You’ll experience all the comfort and style you appreciate in a Downeast yacht, but with the legs and cruising speeds to take your seafaring adventures farther and faster.” ★

ive years ago, if you were to tell someone that Beneteau Group would be marketing and selling a premier line of luxury performance flybridge motor yachts in the U.S., well, you might’ve gotten some strange looks. But that’s exactly what the French manufacturer has done — and very successfully. This fall, it will debut the Monte Carlo MC6 at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. At 60 feet in length, she will be the flagship and newest member of the Monte Carlo flybridge motor yacht fleet. The MC6 has an aggressive, sporty appearance, with its raked-back windshield, the flybridge’s angled lines and mirrored tint on the side windows. But can a 60-foot flybridge motor yacht provide any thrill factor to your boating game? You betcha. The MC6 is fitted with twin 600-horsepower Cummins QSC8.3 6-cylinder turbo diesels, mated to Zeus pod drives, providing spirited performance and excellent efficiency. Top-end is estimated in the 24- to 26-knot range. Inside, like all Monte Carlo yachts, the MC6 theme is ultra contemporary. The design ethos is highlighted by the copious

use of leather, bleached woods, stone and stainless steel in all the right places. The result is an interior that feels light and airy, yet rich and luxurious. The standard layout is a 3-cabin affair, with a mid-deck master stateroom, a guest stateroom in the bow, and a double-berth cabin to starboard, just ahead of the master stateroom. The main salon features an aft galley, U-shaped dinette, portside lounge and a lower helm station. While enjoying the outdoor entertaining spaces, relax in the massive cockpit with lounge seating, dip your feet into the water off the spacious swim platform, worship the sun on the massive foredeck, or hang out on the living-room sized flybridge. Maryline O’Shea, marketing director for Beneteau of the Americas says, “The Monte Carlo line continues to revolutionize the luxury motor cruiser flybridge segment by applying the unique strengths of the Monte Carlo Yachts and Beneteau brands. The new MC6 reaffirms the design synergies between the French and Italian yacht builders — and the result is a fine motor yacht with unique styling and uncompromised performance.” ★

irst let me clear something up: the Yellowfin Hybrid 26 isn’t your run-of-the-mill Toyota Prius; there’s no electric propulsion aboard. In the Yellowfin Hybrid 26’s case, the “hybrid” refers to this center console’s unique mix of bay boat and offshore fishing machine qualities. That means the Hybrid 26 is a boat that’s great at fishing the shallows, yet capable enough to fish in the rough stuff offshore. In case you’re unfamiliar with Yellowfin Yachts, the company’s ballyhoo is designing and building serious fishing boats with a flair for speed, and a great ride in the worst conditions. With 20 degrees of transom deadrise, a single hull step, and a deep-V hull, the Hybrid 26 has the credentials to do serious offshore work in snotty weather. It also draws only 18 inches with the motor up; this means the Hybrid 26 can also ply skinny waters for shallow-water fish. Remember that speed I mentioned? Strap a pair of Yamaha’s F200 200-horsepower, four-stroke outboard motors to this boat’s transom, lay the throttle down, and soon you’ll be breaking 60 mph with a ride that’s predictable

LAKELANDBOATING.COM

and smooth in calm water, as well as in a stiff chop; that’s what owning a Yellowfin is all about. You know this is a serious fishing boat when you lift up the lid behind the helm seating and spy a 50-gallon livewell. There’s even an option for an addition 35-gallon livewell in the cockpit floor. For your family and guests, there is a long, upholstered bench just forward of the transom in the cockpit, a two-person bench on the forward end of the center console unit, as well as an extra seat behind the helm. Overall the Yellowfin 26’s cockpit is spacious and roomy, with plenty of space for a mess of people. “The all-new Yellowfin Inshore Hybrid 26 is the most versatile center console to be introduced by Yellowfin,” says Lynn Darr of North Shore Marina, Great Lakes only authorized Yellowfin dealer. “The company has successfully combined the features and attributes of its larger center console models with the versatility and fishability of their famous bay boat series. With your choice of cockpit layouts, options and available with single or twin engines, it is the ultimate in a trailerable, high-end quality center console.” ★

odiac is to inflatables as Kleenex is to tissues — folks assume that any generic rigid inflatable boat (RIB) is a Zodiac. But the well-known French inflatable company’s new Zodiac Pro Open 850 Optimum NEO isn’t any ordinary inflatable. The 27-foot, 11-inch long Zodiac Pro Open 850 center console has the inflatable tubes you’d expect, but they are strapped to a solid fiberglass hull designed for some serious work. This boat performs amazingly well in choppy waters, with a whopping 24 degrees of transom deadrise, stepped hull, sharp entry and tons of forward flare. She’s extremely stable, too — not only because of the inflatable tubes, but also due to her generous 9-foot, 10-inch beam. The hull is solidly constructed, to boot. An extra-thick fiberglass lamination schedule was ordered, and there’s not a splinter of wood in the hull. Composites are used in the transom, and a foam-filled stringer system reinforces the hull for durability and a solid ride. All that strength means you can sport the Open 850 with as much as 500 ponies worth of outboard power, which will jet this boat to a top end around 62 mph.

On deck, the Open 850 has plenty of room for hanging out. Aft at the transom is an upholstered bench for two with individual backrests, while forward of the center console is a padded seat for two more, surrounded by a sturdy stainless steel bow rail. Snap in the large sunpad cushion for the foredeck and you’ve even got a sun-worshipping platform. A Jabsco head is discretely mounted under the center console unit, accessed via a clever hinged door. Behind the helm is a leaning post with some concealed stowage, drink holders and a stainless-steel grab rail. “The all new Zodiac Pro Open 850 Optimum NEO offers many exciting new features, including: a helm console with a full head and sink, bolster helm seating, four-person transom seating, a bow sunpad, fiberglass t-top with powder-coated rails, larger 150-gallon fuel tank and much more,” says Brent Reed with Reed Yacht Sales in Grand Haven, Michigan. “She’s a very exciting new product from Zodiac for the dayboater who wants a stable and dry ride, to the family that would like to use her for fishing and/or diving.” ★

A New Queen is Christened. Cruisers Yachts launched the all-new 60-foot Cantius at their annual dealer meeting in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin this past July. This new yacht is the biggest, most luxurious and most technologically advanced yacht the company has built to date, making her the reigning queen of their fleet.

The new 60 is the fourth model addition to the Cantius product line, and represents more than two years of design development and construction work. Creating a new yacht this size is no small undertaking, and it was not accomplished in a vacuum. Throughout the development process, current Cruisers yacht owners and dealers were invited to contribute their thoughts and suggestions on how to improve upon the original design. Cruisers also worked with DeBasto Designs on the interior, and Facheris Designs on the exterior. The result is a yacht that has been influenced by hundreds of people who know a whole lot about complex marine design.

When approaching the new 60 Cantius from dockside you will immediately notice the unique array of large windows

mounted within the yacht’s hull-sides. The technology used to manufacture hull-side windows, such as these, is very new and, because of the cost, is only used on larger vessels. The black frames and smoked glass not only add to the style lines of the yacht but also offer a very practical benefit by delivering huge amounts of illumination below decks. The result is that every living space within this yacht is lit by a lot of natural sunlight. These windows meet or exceed all CE and ISO requirements, so there is no need to be concerned about their installation compromising the structural integrity of the hull.

Front and center

For years, yacht designers seemed to pay little attention to a yacht’s foredeck; this space was typically an uninteresting, deserted wasteland, left to the domain of a few lonely cleats, a hatch, bicycles tied to bow rails, and perhaps a dinghy lashed to the deck. But the 60 Cantius foredeck is an oasis. Comfortable seats, thickly padded sun lounges, secured storage, nifty pop-up night lights and an overhead sun shade combine to create a wonderful area. The only thing missing is a few palm trees. While on sea trial, I turned the helm over to my host so I could spend some time on the foredeck while underway. The only thing I heard was the hissing and swishing sounds of the water flowing past the hull; there was zero engine noise on the foredeck while at cruising speed, which added to the feeling of being on a remote island in paradise.

Open layout

The design spirit of all boats under the Cantius marquee lies in the unified environment of the yacht’s deck-level living spaces. Swing open the door between the cockpit and salon, and power down the portside windowed bulkhead, to create an open environment from the yacht’s salon, to the galley and cockpit. The layout includes a peninsula-shaped counter between the galley and cockpit, that melds these areas into one expansive space. Matching stools are installed in the cockpit, so friends can gather around the table — much like in the kitchen of most homes today. It’s easy to envision this as most people’s favorite gathering place while on board. And, because of the unique seawater drain system engineered into the yacht’s cockpit sole, there are zero steps between the cockpit and the yacht’s interior.

Ample accommodations

The open characteristic of the Cantius salon is wisely carried through into the yacht’s accommodations deck; this is where you will experience the value of the hull-side windows mentioned earlier. Access to the two large en suite staterooms and lower salon (with an option for third stateroom) is gained from an open landing area at the bottom of a few extra-wide stair steps. It is unlikely that anybody will feel cramped or confined when down below. Both staterooms — on opposite ends of the boat — utilize the benefits of the hull-side windows; saying that these rooms are bathed in natural light is quite an understatement. The master stateroom is equipped

with custom-made, power-activated shades to create privacy and keep out daylight for people who like to sleep beyond reveille. A lot of attention is given to the layout and outfitting of the master stateroom on yachts of this magnitude; the owners of the vessel deserve to be treated well. The 60 Cantius layout accommodates a beam-to-beam master stateroom, which company representatives tell me is the largest of any yacht in this size class. I really like the cafe table on the starboard side of the master stateroom. Combine this dinette with the stateroom’s built-in coffee/espresso maker and refrigerator and you have a great place to relax with a beverage any time of the day.

Stately details

The workmanship on board the new 60 Cantius is very impressive — as you would expect of a yacht this size and price (about $2.4 million as equipped). The fit and finish of the wood used throughout the yacht is impressive and world class. Cruisers Yachts continue to impress with the design and quality of their cushions and upholstery — all of which are assembled and sewn at their Oconto, Wisconsin facility. When you get a chance to tour this boat, take time to inspect the upholstery, as it is among the best you’ll see. Sometimes the simplest details are what impress the most, as is the case with the Soft-Close hardware used on all the cabinetry. No more wrestling with spring-loaded latches every time you open or close a cabinet door or

drawer — like magic, each door and drawer gently closes without a sound.

Silent power

Our test vessel (hull #1) is equipped with twin Volvo IPS950 D11 diesel engines, rated at 725-hp each. With these engines, the yacht cruised at 32 mph (2,250 rpm) and attained a top speed of 39 mph (2,563 rpm). Fuel consumption indicated a cumulative rate of 56 gallons per hour (gph) cruise and 73 gph wide-open throttle. When I took the helm for a session of close quarters maneuvering, I noticed something was missing. It was turbo lag — that irritating period of hesitation between when you engage the engines and they begin to produce thrust. These engines are quiet and very smooth due to Volvo’s new twin-entry turbo system, which virtually eliminates turbo lag.

Simplified systems

A nifty gizmo installed on this Cantius is Raymarine’s Digital Switching system, which allows the owner and/or captain to control all of the yacht’s systems on their smartphone or tablet. Now, simply using a mobile device, it’s possible to adjust the HVAC system, monitor bilge pump cycles, check fuel level, turn on or off deck lights and a seemingly endless list of other tasks. This system eliminated the expansive switch panels — filled with meters, breakers and switches — as well as hundreds of feet of electrical wiring. The helm station utilizes a very clean design, and is further enhanced with Raymarine navigation gear and Volvo’s digital engine monitors. The

dual helm chairs are both stylish and ultra-plush, and visibility from the helm, while operating and docking the yacht, is outstanding, both forward and aft. A great new yacht is only as good as the company and dealer network that supports it. Dealers attending the Cruisers Yachts meeting this year represent the “who’s who” of U.S. boat retailers. “Cruisers Yachts are sold by the best network of independent boat dealers in the United States,” stated Matthew VanGrunsven, director of marketing for Cruisers Yachts. “Our dealers are well established and financially sound, which enables them to represent the highest quality brands, accept trades and deliver outstanding service to their customers. Our dealers are why so many people are initially attracted to the Cruisers Yachts brand and continue to trade up within our product line.” Christening the new 60 Cantius is a significant milestone for this independent, aggressive yacht builder. This luxury yacht has style and grace, and is truly worthy of royal status. ★

ou don’t need to be a boater to know the Sea Ray name. It’s one of the few brands that has broken out and is easily recognizable among the general public. For many, the name is synonymous with recreational boating. That’s understandable. After its founding in October 1959, Sea Ray was one of the first builders to embrace fiberglass construction, and in the mid-1970s, it revolutionized the boating landscape with its Sundancer concept. As time went on, it firmly cemented its reputation as an industry leader. Yet the real magic of this iconic brand lies beyond the achievements of years past. On the eve of Sea Ray’s 56th anniversary, Lakeland Boating sat down with its leadership to learn more about why the Great Recession was a defining moment, and how Sea Ray has managed to hold fast to its roots while remaining versatile — and evolve to suit changing times. THE GREAT RECESSION In the last half century, boat companies have not been strangers to economic adversity. The 1970s were plagued with rising energy prices, inflation and unemployment, contributing to back-to-back recessions in the early 1980s. A decade after that, the luxury tax landed like a bomb. Many of the companies that survived the earlier

tempests crumbled under the tax’s crippling weight. Dozens went bankrupt. Then came December 2007 and the collapse of the $8 trillion housing bubble. The Great Recession hit global markets hard, and by June 2009, the marine industry was in turmoil. Annual boat sales fell by more than half, boat builders of all sizes closed their doors, and possibly 40 percent of U.S. dealers went out of business. For Sea Ray, the recession devastated a sweet spot; the midsize cruiser market fell by a whopping 80 to 90 percent. “That 24- to 40-foot cruiser category was hit hardest,” says Tim Schiek, Sea Ray’s president, “and our best-known product, of course, was the Sundancer.” A native Wisconsinite, Schiek grew up around boats; his father worked for Mercury for 40 years. He has been in the industry since 1995, leading Brunswick Boat Group’s pontoon categories, serving as president of Boston Whaler and joining Sea Ray as president in 2013. “The recession was a big pause in the industry,” says Ron Berman, Sea Ray’s vice president of product development. “Companies stopped investing. We all pulled back and thought, ‘What’s going to happen?’” Berman has been in the marine industry since 1980, when his father bought a boat he charter-captained out of Port Canaveral, Florida. He’s now in his 30th year with Knoxville, Tennessee-based Brunswick Boat

Group, which owns Sea Ray, Bayliner, Meridian, Boston Whaler and many other well-known brands. “There was a lot of long-term planning and groundwork from late 2009 into 2011,” he recalls. “We did a significant amount of market and consumer research, and we realized that the way forward was going to be through larger motor yachts and day boats. We had to go big and little.” This was a big deal. After all, Sea Ray was an expresscruiser pioneer. Originally known for smaller boats on the country’s freshwater lakes, it exploded onto a much larger stage with the introduction of the Sundancer, and its position was unshaken for more than 30 years. “The loss of more than 80 percent of the cruiser market was huge,” Berman says. “We really lived on cruisers, and then all that changed. Some of our competitors chose to get out of the bigger boats.” After a pause, he adds, “We decided to invest there.” Simply the act of moving forward in a given direction, any direction, was revolutionary in the wake of the worst economic downturn in generations. Brad Anderson, Sea Ray’s senior vice president of global sales, marketing and customer service, observes that many companies opted to hunker down and wait it out, trusting on brand equity to carry them through. “At the time, no one knew the severity of the downturn, or how long it would last,” he reflects. “We certainly had

the opportunity to just do nothing and wait for the market to come back, which it didn’t. If we’d stayed the course, we’d be in real trouble. We knew we had to right-size our business and reinvent our portfolio, because we were living in a new world.” Anderson grew up in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, and he has been on and around boats his entire life. He’s been with Brunswick for more than 14 years. “We also understood we had to focus on new products in the best channels for us,” he continues. “Large day boats, say 22 feet and above, were experiencing a steady recovery, as were larger motor yachts.” STRONG SUPPORT According to the Sea Ray team, having the support of a corporate parent meant everything during those dark days. Brunswick Corporation, founded in 1845 and currently headquartered in Lake Forest, Illinois, purchased Sea Ray in 1986. Today, it’s the largest producer of recreational boats in the world. “Brunswick’s ownership allowed us to keep investing in our brand where others couldn’t,” Berman says. “We also were so fortunate to have a strong dealer network. That’s been a huge part of our success.” Matt Guilford, vice president of marketing, notes that Sea Ray incorporated a significant, rigorous dealer

certification process long before it was de rigueur. As a result, the brand had one of the most sound dealer networks in the industry when the bubble burst. “Our network remained much more intact than the other brands,” says Guilford, who has been with Brunswick for 12 years and with Sea Ray since January 2013. “Sea Ray’s approach to dealer development made us ideally suited to weather the storm. They continued to support customers, and there was less distressed product out there.” “During the Great Recession, our dealers helped us as much as our reputation did, if not more,” Schiek says. “We place an enormous emphasis on our dealer network and our customer service, as well as on the quality of our boats. While some brands lost 30 percent of their dealers, or more, we didn’t. Our dealers are the best in the business, and I’m proud of their resilience.” This is something founder Cornelius Nathaniel “Connie” Ray III (known as C.N.), who passed away in 2009, would have been pleased to hear. “I realized that the dealer was the key to our success, assuming we could build a good boat,” C.N. Ray notes in the forward to the 2008 coffeetable book, Commanding the Waterways: The History of Sea Ray. “We (set) ourselves apart from our competition with strict attention to the basics: superior products, superior dealers, and a sincere appreciation of our customers.” AN INNOVATIVE NEW COURSE Despite solid leadership, an intact dealer network and a still-loyal customer base, Sea Ray sharply focused and refined its efforts as it sought a new way forward. Customers were going to want innovative new boats, not expensive, updated versions of old boats. Not in this brave new world. “We had to react, and we did,” Schiek says. “We launched more than 20 new models in the last two years.”

LAKELANDBOATING.COM

The transformation has been truly remarkable. Look no farther than the L-Class series of luxury motor yachts, and the SLX series of sport boats. “We’re hitting on every important point, from design and beauty, to unexpected features, clever storage, and a high level of electronic integration,” Berman says. “We’re getting rid of a lot of paradigms.” With the L-Class, Sea Ray is taking on the European import market, yet it’s also presenting its own take on the luxury yachting experience. According to Guilford, the L-Class yachts offer more than simply the aesthetic that buyers associate with high-end motor yachts. “We’re known for defining categories,” he says. “With the L-Class, of course there must be style and chemistry, but they must find their fullest expression through substance and integrity. Sea Ray has been committed to that since the very beginning, and an important piece is the dealer-customer experience. We’re encouraging customers to think beyond their first impression. We want to meet their expectations for luxury, then do what we’re famous for.” Sea Ray also works hard to engage customers from Day 1. They are encouraged to be involved, from touring the plant to choosing materials. “We want people to feel special, to feel part of the process,” Anderson says. “We want to talk with them, because they’re the ones who drive our decision-making. We want to know what they think.” Sea Ray remains mindful of where it came from, as well. For years, it was a builder of small and midsize boats, and there remains a huge audience for such entry-level models. So, with the SLX series, the emphasis is on value and accessibility without diminishing the Sea Ray experience. “It’s important to remember who you are,” Guilford says. “I’m glad Sea Ray still offers accessibility, because it’s so important to get people into boating.” These are not, however, our grandfathers’ or fathers’ runabouts. Sea Ray has brought advanced manufacturing processes to the SLX series, and its designs allow both superior performance and increased interior space. Even with entry-level models, owners will benefit from design innovation and precision engineering.

1984 Catalog

“We have the strongest, deepest engineering and product development team out there,” Berman says. “It’s more than 200 people, and it’s a very talented team. Ninety-eight percent of what we do involves our resources. For example, we don’t need to go to a third party for molds. Any part we need, we can see it as soon as it’s produced and can make refinements right away.” Anderson also notes that the innovative new boat categories give Sea Ray new opportunities to tell its story. “With the SLX series, we can re-introduce ourselves and let boaters know that you can be part of the Sea Ray family at a price that’s reasonable,” he says. “With the L-Class, it’s a new legacy. It’s so exciting and fun to tell a new story. Customers see that style and substance can be married, and that you don’t have to sacrifice one for the other.” UNDERSTANDING THE CUSTOMERS Becoming a leader in such specialized categories means all-new product development, engineering and sales strategies. The markets are highly competitive, and Guilford says that definitely requires specialists rather than generalists. “We now have teams that specialize by category, that completely understand that category’s customers, competitors and opportunities for innovation,” he says. “That’s been an interesting new development for us.” Of course, challenges remain. Customer needs are changing, which means Sea Ray must constantly invest in new technologies and provide boats with enhanced connectivity (think touch screens, smartphones and tablets). Families today also have less free time, and increased demands on their time. “We always need to be thinking about how to make boating more fun and hassle-free,” Anderson says. “We also need to reduce the intimidating factor with innovations like Zeus pods and joystick controls.”

2015

“What’s our biggest competitor in 2015? Organized sports activities!” Guilford says with a laugh. “People have such busy family calendars, there’s an enormous premium on time. So we have to let them know how they can have luxury, space and comfort and also be able to share the experience with family and friends. Spending their time on the water has to make sense to them.” LOOKING FORWARD Sea Ray started with a 16-foot family runabout in 1959. Today, it offers more than 30 models from 19 to 65 feet. Schiek says the builder will introduce 12 new models in the next 12 months, and Guilford hints at what he called a “category-defining home run” for the new year, as well. “I can’t say more than that right now, but people haven’t seen anything like it before,” he says. “It’s going to make a dramatic impact on the express cruiser market. It’s so important to have those big things to look forward to — to extend Sea Ray’s tradition of innovation and integrity into the future.” “It’ll reinvent a category,” Berman says. “All I can say is, it’ll be a gem.” “I love the product aspect of the business, all this new innovation,” Schiek says. “Plus, I’m surrounded by such great, loyal, dedicated people: from the employees who have been here for 20 or 30 years, to the dealers who grew up with the Sea Ray brand, to the customers who started with a 19-footer and now have a 65-foot luxury yacht. It’s really exciting. I’m thrilled, and honored, to be a part of it.” “I’ve met customers who’ve owned 20 Sea Ray boats,” Anderson says, “and it’s fascinating to learn what that has brought to their lives. In the end, that’s what’s most rewarding for me… what can be better than spending time on the water?” ★

From

Production to Paradise by Kate Bush

Lakeland editor Kate Bush takes an adventure aboard the all-new Tiara Q44 at the Walstrom Marine Rendezvous.

T

here is a universal theory widely accepted by boaters: the more you cruise and spend time aboard your boat, the more likely you’ll keep it long-term. And it’s a fact that cruising with other boaters has the power to reignite your passion for boating. That’s what Walstrom Marine — a full-service marina in northern Michigan — attempts each year at its rendezvous, by encouraging boaters to cruise. The family owned and operated marina, with locations in Cheboygan, Bay Harbor and Harbor Springs, has been in business for 70 years and has a passionate troop of boaters that can vouch for them. At this year’s rendezvous, which took place in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, I was joined by more than 100 Walstrom customers and staff, and had the pleasure of meeting the Slikkers family and staff behind the Holland, Michigan-based S2 and Tiara Yachts. As I drove over one of the world’s largest extension bridges, I entered into the quaint town of St. Ignace, Michigan, where the start of the rendezvous was to take place. While the weather seemed a bit dreary, I had no clue that storms ravaged parts of northern Michigan earlier in the day, delaying or canceling some rendezvous attendees plans to voyage north. “I led a group of boaters up and we got caught in some rainsqualls,” Walstrom’s Rick Venner says. “But we really didn’t miss a beat. Most people joined us despite the weather.” The first thing on my schedule: hop aboard the famous Shepler’s Ferry with Tiara marketing director David Glenn, and photographer Marc Montocchio, and make our way across Lake Huron to Mackinac Island. This island is a rare destination that allows you to take a step back in time. Once on land, we made our way past a plethora of shops baking up some sweet, world-renowned fudge, through a maze of bicycles and horse-drawn carriages, and finally to the docks at the Mackinac Island Marina. Sitting front row and center, for all to see, was the all-new Tiara Q44 hull #2 — designed by founder Leon Slikkers — making its first public appearance. With a clear view from the porch of the Mackinac Island Yacht Club, where rendezvous attendee’s were sipping wine and snacking on hors d’oeuvres, the Q44 dazzled in the marina slip.

Adventure yacht The first thing to catch my eye was the bicycle positioned on top of the yacht. As we stepped closer, the openness of the Q44 is unlike any Tiara I’ve ever seen; the bridge and cockpit blend seamlessly into the outdoor island galley, and then into the full-beam swim platform. “It is a unique boat for the Great Lakes in that it offers you some protection (From top to bottom) Walstrom Marine hosts its annual summer rendezvous up in St. Ignace and Mackinac Island, Michigan; Walstroms’ Rick Venner at the St. Ignace Municipal Marina after facing the storms; A group of rendezvous attendee’s sit on the Shepler’s Ferry; The streets of Mackinac Island are filled with horse-drawn carriages and bicycles; The Q44 makes its public debut in a slip at the Mackinac Island Marina.

if you need to be out of the sun or from a rough day on the water,” David notes. “It also allows you and your guests to use virtually every part of your boat — from bow to stern — for entertaining, water sports, island hopping; all the things that I think everyone enjoys on boats” Hailing from a long line of Great Lakes-minded yachts, with more than 60 years and three Slikkers generations worth of production experience, the Q44 marks a new type of “adventure yacht” from Tiara. The design of this yacht — built on the Tiara 44 Coupe hull — moves towards increased outdoor space, ideal for day cruising (especially for this rendezvous) with a wide-open, single-level deck. The best part… I’d get my chance to try a hand at captaining this adventure yacht the very next morning!

Grand occasion From the marina, we made our way up to the Mackinac Island Yacht Club — a prestigious club established in 1937 — where a line of rendezvous attendees awaited the next horse-drawn carriage to shuttle them from the cocktail hour to the Grand Hotel; yes, the Grand Hotel. We were treated to fabulous cuisine as we took in the astounding views of the worlds longest porch. It was the perfect environment to chat with some of Walstrom’s customers, like the Morand family for Tawas City, Michigan, who was attending the rendezvous for their first time. Ralph and Cheryl Morand invited their 13-year-old granddaughter Allie Morand and her friend Emily Young, to the event. Though the storms deterred them from bringing along their Sea Ray Express Cruiser, they were excited for the opportunity to meet new boaters. “I really like the fact that the young adults were invited to the rendezvous because they’re really our future boaters,” Ralph says. “One of the things we’ve tried to do the last few years is invite our grandchildren out on the boat,” Cheryl adds. “We’ve let them all have a trip because that’s the only way to have them get involved and to love boating — by being around people who can teach you.” After our feast, and speeches from Walstrom staff members, we took a carriage ride back to Shepler’s dock and awaited the arrival of our private, chartered sunset cruise back to St. Ignace under a breathtaking, picturesque night sky.

Captain of the ship Bright and early, on day two of the rendezvous, Walstrom and Tiara hosted a red-eye brunch on the docks of the St. Ignace Municipal Marina for the brave rendezvous-ers who were continuing their journey to the North Channel and the Soo. After some coffee, croissants and a captains meeting, I hoped aboard the Q44 hull #1 with David, Marc, Leon and his grandson Alex Slikkers. As the sun peaked out behind the clouds and the temperatures started to rise, we left the St. Ignace Marina and headed due east to Drummond Island. This yacht, unlike hull #2, was optioned with gorgeous teak flooring and onyx topsides. As we began our journey, the boat rode like a dream. While Lake Huron was in no way choppy, the Q44 slipped gracefully through the water alongside a herd of Pursuits and Tiaras. My place on a boat is always the bow, so I made a beeline as soon as I hopped aboard; settling into the spacious, forward loveseat, I watched the sun rise over the lake. The wide port and starboard walkways made it possible to access the bow even underway. Better yet, as we neared the De Tour lighthouse, I got to try my hand at captaining ship; with the joystick, it was a breeze. comfortable speed, but the Q44 can get you up to 32-33 knots with the standard twin Volvo IPS 600. “We’ve been experts in the field of matching IPS Volvo Penta drives to Tiara hulls and delivering a consistent boat that performs well while cruising,” David says, “Or, if you get in a sticky situation, you find yourself with a 65 knot gale blowing you down the lake or offshore, you can be confident that you’ll be just fine with the build and design and the engineering that goes into the hull.” I peeked at the Glass Cockpit, with pinch-to-zoom GPS display, as we passed the private islands dotting Drummond Island, with names like Wreck, Gull and Bacon. With the electrically actuated port and starboard sliding doors open, I sat at the helm and could revel in the unspoiled, lush landscape, while getting some fresh air. With Leon taking the wheel, I found a comfortable spot on the rear-facing L-shaped lounge overlooking the island galley, back sunpad, and aft swim platform area. Below deck, the Q44 has a simple, yet beautifully designed cabin that, at first appearance, looks like U-shaped lounge; this area is designed to serve as either double twin berths, or convert into a full queen berth. The cabin also features a pantry-style galley, and separate head and shower. “This Q series product is very appealing in a broad sense for a lot of different uses,” David says. “Someone could look at it and say, ‘I could go fish with this boat with the grandkids,’ ‘I could picnic with this boat, with family and friends,’ or ‘I could go to an island of my own and throw my mountain bikes off and go trailblazing.’”

Michigan’s Ultimate playground Drummond Island, which calls itself “Michigan’s Ultimate Playground,” is the second largest freshwater island in the nation and was our next destination. After our 60 mile cruise from St. Ignace, we approached the Drummond Island Yacht Haven Marina to pump out, fill up and tie off. The remainder of the day was spent exploring this unique paradise, while Leon took down his bike from the top of the Q44, pumped air into the tires, and took off on a 2-hour trip around the 133-square-mile forested landscape. Meanwhile, Bob and Barb Slikkers — who joined us on this leg of the rendezvous aboard their Pursuit OS — invited us to their cottage on Drummond Island, while Alex enjoyed a round of golf, and Marc photographed the lush, northern Michigan landscape. We ended the night with a meal at Pins (with the best pizza in town) and a scoop of homemade Drummond Island ice cream. By day three, I was officially on the time schedule of a dedicated cruiser as we took off from the docks around 7 a.m. The lake was so calm; it looked like glass and barely rippled as we headed west for St. Ignace. As we cruised back near the Mackinac Bridge, the trip came full circle back to the St. Ignace Marina docks. There is nothing like meeting new, enthusiastic boaters, voyaging to unique Great Lakes waypoints and cruising on a beautiful Tiara Yacht (that traveled from production to paradise) to remind me how stunning, exhilarating and peaceful Great Lakes cruising can be. “When people aren’t using their boat, they ask themselves, ‘is this the right boat for us,’” Venner states. “This event creates a bond between boaters. We want to encourage new people to come, and we want people using their boats. We want them to feel confident using them so that they can become better boaters, and then lifetime boaters. There is nothing like getting away and running a boat to wake you back up to boating.” H (From top to bottom) Walstroms’ Hi Stover directs the captain’s meeting for the cruise to the Soo; The Q44 hull #1 sits outside the Drummond Island Yacht Haven Marina; Leon Slikkers drives the Q44 over Lake Huron’s calm water; The aft galley features a large island; The Q44 features an open, airy layout; The view from the portside walkway on the Q44.

ld-growth forests tower above rocky shelves, wide swaths of sugar sand beach dot shorelines accented by boulders and colorful agates, eagles soar from cliffs, and sheltered harbors invite visits to pristine wilderness areas, bordered by villages notable for multi-ethnic traditions dating back three or four generations. But the key to the heart of this region — or so I’m learning from a tour guide at Keweenaw National Historical Park — is often invisible to the eye. It lies many stories beneath the rock formations, which only hint in color and sheen to the story far below.

Copper boom

“Does anyone have a penny?” ranger Dan Brown asks, prompting frantic digging through pockets to see who can find one first and hand it over. The coin may be relatively worthless for its buying power today, Brown notes, flipping it into the air for emphasis. But it’s of value here for the way it encapsulates the region’s history and claim to fame. Horace Greeley saying, “Go west young man,” was uttering about the Keweenaw — a 75-mile long peninsula of rock shelves and ravines that was home to a mineral rush for copper, pre-dating the country’s more famous gold rush. Greeley was a stockholder and agent for the Delaware Mine, spending time in Michigan's frontier in the summers of 1847 and 1848. Native Americans had, centuries prior, used copper to fashion primitive tools and clothing adornments. But it was Douglas Houghton — Michigan’s first geologist and namesake of

the peninsula’s gateway city — who first noted the massive potential of the copper. He noted that copper is here, but “it’s going to be really hard to get.” At the height of the boom, half of the nation’s copper came from this stretch — a story told through a loose collection of buildings that make up this unusual national park. Among the stops is Houghton’s Carnegie Museum — with its rotating exhibits on science, local culture and history — the Quincy Smelter (a collection of restored ruins on Portage Lake across from the city’s waterfront), and a daily tour of the town of Calumet a few miles north.

Hustle and bustle

Here, on a deserted street (outside of our small group of camera-toting tourists), we have to draw imagination to conjure the days when tens of thousands of people stood in our spots. We imagined them catching street cars, during a time when 35 languages were spoken on the streets and when a department store, once housed in the Vertin Building (now a gallery for local artists, with the words “Ladies Suits” still visible on the side), was the trendiest store north of Chicago, selling everything a “miner or millionaire” family might need. During the peak of the copper boom, Houghton County had more millionaires per capita than any other county in the U.S. But that mining life, for those who did the real work, meant hard toil and danger, movingly depicted in tours of local churches and mines. At Calumet’s stunning St. Paul the Apostle, intricate stained glass windows feature saints known to intervene for workers in danger. And the most visceral way of understanding why thousands likely prayed before St. Joseph (patron of manual laborers) or St. Barbara (patron saint of miners) is by donning a yellow loaner hardhat and oversized Carharrt, and heading underground via the Quincy Mine Tour in Houghton’s twin city, Hancock.

“Focal point of the Finns”

In the town of Hancock, just across the canal from Houghton, street signs are written in both English and Finnish; one clue to the fact that there are more people of Finnish descent in this, and the surrounding three counties, than anywhere outside of Finland. Most homes and hotels have saunas, cafes serving pasties and pastries boast names like Kaleva (for a famed Finnish legend), and until it recently closed, the local flower shop was called Kukkakauppa, says David Maki, assistant editor of the Hancock-based, The Finnish American Reporter. The name, when translated, is “flower shop.”

Island Wildlife Paradise Isle Royale — a 6 hour ferry ride on the Ranger III from Houghton — is one of the country’s few national parks on an island, and its remoteness makes it one of the quietest (as determined in a national park study) and also one of the least visited. Those who visit Rock Harbor Lighthouse the scenic wilderness area of 132,000 acres — noted for rocky cliffs and bays — can camp or stay in the Rock Harbor Lodge, and explore by land or water. A national park since 1940, Isle Royale is partly known as the base for the country’s longestRanger III, Houghton running predator/prey study; in this case, of the island’s interdependent wolf and moose populations. Visitors can even sign up for a learning vacation tour that lets them participate in the research. The park user fee is $4 a day (plus ferry costs). It’s closed during the winter.

God's country Another way to get to Isle Royale is aboard the Isle Royale Queen IV out of Copper Harbor — an hour drive from Houghton — which is a little over a three hour ferry ride. In addition to ferry service to Isle Royale, they also offer sunset cruises during the season. This line has been owned and operated by the Kilpela family since 1971. Isle Royale Queen IV, Copper Harbor

A trip to Copper Harbor — hidden at the top of the Keweenaw Peninsula, against the backdrop of lakes, mountains and pristine forests — is off the beaten path, but well worth the trip. Explore and enjoy the unique shops and galleries, amazing scenery, fine cuisine and friendly people. And if you are lucky, the northern lights (Aurora Borealis) will put on a show. There's a certain magic here, and once you spend some time, you will feel the need to return.

Finnish workers, Maki says, joined miners from Cornwall, Italy, and elsewhere, in mines like Quincy, where a chill seeps in as our tram chugs through the door to the Number 5 shaft, and the temperature instantly drops by 30 degrees. Guides switch off the lights and instruct the group to touch the wall while imagining themselves as a miner, working alone, whose candle has just been accidentally extinguished. Between 1848 and 1901, there were no electric lights, and if a helmet candle went out, we’re told, feeling your way back to the shaft opening was the only option.

For more upbeat and artistic options for exploring the region’s historic, mineral and ethnic culture, a favorite is the impressive A.E. Seaman Mineral Museum at the Michigan Technological University, where 4,000 types of rocks and gems are on display at any given time. Within — what the director Ted Bornhorst calls the world’s finest collection of crystallized copper — are those highlighted for their whimsical beauty. Bornhorst says he especially likes one called the “grasshopper” for its shape (it looks like one), another referred to as the “buffalo” (same reason) and the “rocket,” so perfect its been used as a poster centerpiece. Outside magazine recently named Houghton one of the best places to live in the United States for its adventurous options, bike lanes and green space, and National Geographic Adventure dubbed it a top 10 gateway town for summer sports. Local outfitters like to say there’s no outdoor fun you can’t have in a city and peninsula notable for mountain biking challenges, wilderness paddling and winter sports, like expert ski hills and ice climbing to the tops of frozen waterfalls up to 80 feet high. Adrenaline junkies aren’t the only visitors who love exploring, though. Long stretches of sandy beach are often dotted with colorful Lake Superior agates. The chance to dig through poor rock piles (remnants from mining days) draws metal detector-toting treasure hunters during Houghton’s annual mineral week, held the first week of August. The hunt for the thimbleberry is fun, too; though don’t bother asking a local to share hunting ground secrets. Find yours in jams or pies at roadside markets, or stores like the Jampot — an Eagle Harbor shop run by Eastern Orthodox monks to support their ministry. If you’re lucky, Father Basil will hand over your thimbleberry jam, hand-made truffles or brandy-soaked lemon pound cake after sharing a story about how they came for purgatory and found paradise, or a tale about the elf-like scoofies they like to say live in the waterfall next door.

Taste of the town

These days, copper is best found in gift shops, like Houghton’s Chickadee’s, as tiny nuggets on pretty necklaces. And remnants of mining days are tastily served up as memories via microbrews — with names like “Red Jacket Amber” or “Pick Axe Blonde” — alongside sacks of roasted peanuts in the

Houghton Festival Highlights cozy Keweenaw Brewing Company. For a full meal, The Library Restaurant and Brewpub serves dinners paired with brews like “Shafthouse Stout” or “Whiteout Wheat.” The menu at the Ambassador is particularly fun, says Houghton Chamber’s Trina Barrette; the Cudighi sandwich, popularized by Italian immigrants, is a local favorite. And for a Finnish and Cornish staple — the pasty meat pie that workers often carried into the mines — head to Roy’s Pasties and Bakery. Another must-stop is Peterson's Fish Market on Quincy Hill. This three generation, family-run business operates two commercial fishing tugs year-round. Lake Superior fish are some the finest tasting freshwater fish in the world, and Peterson's ship their fresh and smoked fish throughout the U.S. year-round.

Beauty in all seasons

Come summer, the Houghton County Marina along the Portage Canal makes a great exploration base. Bring or rent a bike, and take a ride on the 4.5-mile Waterfront Trail, which connects to more trails in the pretty Nara Nature Park and on the campus of Michigan Technological University (founded in 1885 to train mining engineers). The waterfront also is port for the Ranger III, which offers both sightseeing tours and transportation to Isle Royale — one of the nation’s least visited, wildest National Parks. Moose and loons are a common sight, and those who want to explore via a guided paddling trip can book a tour through Keweenaw Adventure Company in Copper Harbor at the peninsula’s tip. Autumn brings the energy of students returning to campus, as well as some of the country’s most brilliant fall color vistas. Brockway Mountain Drive, near the peninsula’s tip, boasts the highest drive above sea level between the Rockies and Alleghenies; and both local ski resorts — Mount Ripley in Hancock and Mount Bohemia in Lac La Belle — offer color tour ski lift rides to mountain valley panoramas. For an unforgettable getaway, spend a night or two at Sand Hills Lighthouse Inn in Ahmeek. This former active lighthouse (the largest on the Great Lakes) was built on the shores of Lake Superior in 1917. The property was extensively renovated by the owners and converted into a bed and breakfast, which opened in 1995. Guests are treated to a guided tour to the top of the lighthouse for a magnificant view 101 feet above Lake Superior. Another great place to stay in downtown Houghton, no matter the season, is Magnuson Hotel's Franklin Square Inn. This premier property is the only full-service hotel serving the city and offers panoramic views from waterside rooms, and convenient access to recreational and snowmobile trails.

Bridgefest (June) celebrates the anniversary of the Portage Lake Lift Bridge — the key link to neighboring Hancock and the rest of the Keweenaw Peninsula. But the real draw is twin festival Bridgefeast — a celebration of all things seafood. BRIDGEFESTFUN.COM. The Keweenaw Brewfest on the Houghton waterfront (late August) celebrates the area’s growing microbrew culture, with more than 40 breweries and 100 kinds of beers represented. K-C-F.ORG/EVENTS.

Heikinpaiva (January 23-26) is Hancock’s midwinter Finnish-American festival. “Heikinpaiva” translates to “when the bear rolls over,” signifying winter’s midpoint. PASTY.COM/HEIKKI Winter Carnival (February 3-6) has kept a sense of fun and humor since its founding in 1922, bringing snow sculptures, broomball, comedy skits, sleigh rides and a queen coronation to the festivities, organized by the Blue Key National Honor Society on the Michigan Technological University campus. But Houghton is a winter city — and by official designation; professional hockey was born here. Every summer and fall, the Copper Country Historic Fair in the historic Dee Stadium tells the story of how Houghton became the sport’s founding location. You can join a pick-up game at any of the rinks, but broomball — part soccer, part hockey and played with a broom — is so hot that webcams around the campus let parents watch students' games online. When 280 inches of snow falls during a typical Houghton winter, you have to embrace it, says Scott MacInnes, a longtime city manager and member of the worldwide Winter Cities Institute, of which Houghton is an active participant. Steep downtown hills host snowboarding competitions, the college runs a winter driving school, and the university’s annual Winter Carnival has become so popular that hotel rooms sell out months in advance. Intricate snow sculptures are the highlight, but the city’s also used that event to set world records at various times for the largest snowball, biggest snowball fight and most snow angels.

To find both snow and culture, Heikinpaiva — Hancock’s festival held at winter’s midpoint (January 23-26), or in folklore terms “when the (hibernating) bear rolls over” — is hard to beat. Locals dress in costume of characters from Finnish legends, including the mythical snow God responsible for all that snow. Kids play on kicksleds, and the highlight is a “wife carrying contest,” like one created in Finland. “It’s just one of the many ways people choose to embrace winter rather than hide from it,” says Finnish expert Maki. “In a cliché way, it can be applied to the Finnish word ‘sisu,’ which, in a couple of sentences, is the willingness to persevere despite impossible odds. Winters aren’t always unbearable, but when they are, we make the best of it.” ★

traight out of the pages of a storybook, this 4-bedroom home — tucked in a private, 2.3-acre wooded lot, just steps from Lake Michigan — has a unique style and an alluring history. Resembling the renowned “mushroom houses,” by Charlevoix’s very own Earl Young, this home, with its distinct curved lines, was designed and built by Young’s daughter, Virgina Olsen. “It’s similar to the mushroom houses — it’s got a rolling roof with cedar shake and a stucco exterior,” says owner Peggy Thompson. “The home is really built into the landscape.” Thompson’s parents bought the property in 1985 and transformed the home — constructing a large addition to the back of the home and a second floor — while maintaining the original style of the house designed by Olsen. The drive leading up to the home showcases a stunning trail of gardens and paved walkways. Warm, natural elements fill the interior, including the earthy flooring, four fireplaces and timbered walls. While the house boasts cathedral ceilings and an open floor plan — great for entertaining — it also offers quiet nooks for reading and relaxing.

LAKELANDBOATING.COM

This property has five full baths and two half baths, a stunning second-floor master bedroom with luxurious his and hers en suites, and a kitchen that chef’s can only dream of. The gourmet kitchen boasts a massive prep area, top-of-the-line appliances, an island with seating, wine fridge and bountiful storage cabinets. One unique and notable feature in the home is its elevator, which can be mistaken for an ordinary door. Inside, the elevator has wood paneling and a window, offering spectacular outdoor views while traveling from the top floor to the lower level. The outdoor area features several decks, tucked into the corners of the woods, and a lap pool. Near the water, there is yet another deck, ideal for catching some rays on the 262 feet of sandy shoreline. “Although it is private and you are in the woods, it’s just a 10 minute walk to downtown Charlevoix. I think what’s really appealing about this home is its walkability and the access to Round Lake and the marinas.” Thompson says. “The home is nearly invisible from the water, but when you are inside, you have great views of Lake Michigan.” ★

n the western edge of Michigan’s thumb lies Sebewaing — a city celebrated for its exceptional walleye fishing and known as the Sugar Beet Capital of the world. And just down the Sebewaing River where the fishing is hot, near the mouth of the Saginaw Bay, is where you’ll find the Sebewaing Harbor Marina. Built in 1995, the marina was constructed as a hub for boats heading out to catch some walleye and perch. After a $1.5 million dredging operation on the 2.5-mile long channel, completed in June 2015, the marina can now accommodate more boats than ever. “In the past it’s been very shallow,” harbormaster Jim Stenfelt says. “We now have 8 to 9 feet of water all the way out, so we can accommodate just about anything; I brought in a 36-foot sailboat last night!” The marina offers 80 slips on floating docks, with 30-amp service and water available. Sebewaing Harbor Marina also offers excellent bathroom, shower and laundry facilities, a 4-car deep ramp, Valvtect marine fuel, pump-out and a bait shop — all in a park-like setting with picnic tables.

LAKELANDBOATING.COM

Across the river is the River Campground, owned by Matt Cummings, who also leases the marina from the Village of Sebewaing. There is an airport within walking distance to the marina and a park across the street for kid’s enjoyment. Other features at the marina include Wi-Fi, a large parking lot and an area for trailer storage. In an effort to reach more boaters, the marina has started a promotion called marina hosting on the weekends; they host up to 10 boats from any given marina for a free weekend. Stenfelt says they recently hosted the Bay City Sunset Shores Marina . Another noteworthy promotion for cruisers: the marina is offering free weekend slips for boats coming in off the lake. Cruisers can tie up, use the marinas electric and water free of charge, and check out the marina for a weekend. “The marina is quiet, peaceful and very pretty,” Stenfelt says. “It’s very much a park-like setting. We have all the amenities any cruiser could ask for.We just want people to discover us; we think we’ve got a gem right here that not many people know about.” ★

Operation Summaries Learning lessons the hard way. Three Rescued from Boat on Breakwall 1

Sheboygan, Wisconsin — July 23 The Coast Guard and local agencies rescued three people after their 29-foot vessel ran up onto a breakwall outside the Sheboygan River as they were heading into the Sheboygan Marina. Shortly after 9:30 p.m., a watchstander at Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan received a call from a good Samaritan stating he had witnessed a vessel run into the breakwall. The watchstander diverted a rescue crew from Coast Guard Station Sheboygan — already underway on routine patrol aboard a 45-foot response boat — to the scene. When the crew 1 arrived, they found the boat resting high on the breakwall with the three people still aboard. None of the passengers were wearing a lifejacket and one had suffered a head injury. “Lights on shore can sometimes be mistaken for aids to navigation or other markings into 2 a harbor or marina,” says chief petty officer Anthony Valeri, officer in charge of Coast Guard Station Sheboygan. “People should adjust their speed in an unfamiliar situation. Boat Hits Calumet Harbor 2 Breakwall

Chicago, Illinois — July 26 A 22-foot recreational vessel hit the Calumet Harbor breakwall near Chicago, with three people aboard, after returning from a fireworks show at Navy Pier. 4 The Coast Guard Station Calumet Harbor received a report from a good Samaritan, via Chicago 911, that the boat had run aground and a Coast Guard rescue team was diverted to the scene. The three passengers, two women and one man, were still on the breakwall when the crew arrived. They told the Coast Guard that they had been following the shoreline when they hit the breakwall. Neither person had an operable cell phone, nor did the boat have a marine radio, to call for help. The passengers did not sustain any injuries. “We recommend that boaters also have a marine radio on board their boat in order to call for help in an emergency,” says petty officer 1st class Jacob Borges, watchstander at Coast Guard Station Calumet Harbor. “Today’s case is a perfect example how one can not, and should not, rely on

a cell phone to call for help. Batteries can go dead and will not work if you’re offshore and out of range of a cell tower.” Report by USCGNEWS.COM; photo by petty officer 1st class Jacob Borges

Mother and Daughter Rescued from 3 Capsized Boat Brunswick, Georgia —August 1 At approximately 4 p.m., watchstanders at Coast Guard Station Brunswick received a call from a woman and her daughter, reporting that their 16-foot boat had become grounded about 1 nautical mile off the coast of St. Simons Island. Station Brunswick quickly diverted a boat crew, aboard a 29-foot response boat, to assist. When the response boat arrived on scene, the shallow water only allowed them to get within 250 yards of the boat. Coast Guard Sector Charleston contacted the women and was told that the vessel had started taking on water over the side. Shortly thereafter, the 16-foot boat capsized, sending both women into the water. The MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Air Station Savannah that was diverted to the scene safely hoisted both women and transported them to St. Simons Island Airport. No medical attention was requested. Report by USCGNEWS.COM; photo courtesy U.S. Coast Guard

Couple and Two Dogs Rescued From Sinking Boat 4

Tampa, Florida — August 10 The Coast Guard rescued a couple and their two dogs after their 32-foot boat started taking on water 5 miles south of the Gandy Bridge in Tampa, Florida. Watchstanders received a 911 transfer call from Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, of a man stating his boat had run aground earlier and was now taking on water. He stated he was making his way to the marina, but water was still flooding into the boat. A 45-foot response boat crew from Coast Guard Station St. Petersburg was launched, arrived on scene at 5:21 p.m., and began dewatering operations. Boatcrew members placed the boat in tow and transferred the people, their dogs, and their boat to Hula Bay Marina in Tampa, Florida. There were no reported injuries. “The man made the correct and educated decision to continue making way toward the marina,” says Coast Guard petty officer 3rd class Timothy C. Kane, the Coast Guard RB-M operator from the station. “And, it was great to see they were wearing their lifejackets — even the dogs were wearing life jackets.” Report by USCGNEWS.COM; photo courtesy U.S. Coast Guard
