THE BEAUTY OF A CARVER YACHT IS MORE THAN SKIN DEEP. A lot of boats at the dock are all glitz and glamour. But how well do they perform when the going gets rough? All that pizazz is small comfort when you’re bouncing off the wave tops or wallowing in the troughs. At Carver, we’ve been building boats for more than 60 years that can handle the roughest water on the planet—the Great Lakes. Unlike salt water, fresh water is hard. Rock hard. And those waves can be steep and breaking. That means you take it on the chin, one wave after another in rapid succession. So we support our hulls with an extraordinary stringer system that reinforces the bow as much as the hull bottom. It’s not glamorous, but you’ll be glad of it the first time it’s blowing hard out at sea. No wonder Carver Yachts is taking the marine industry by storm. Sea trial one at your Carver Yachts dealer soon.
Stringers extend up the bow to prevent “oil canning” and reduce vibration in the hull when running into head seas.
The entire interior of the hull is coated with a white epoxy paint for easier maintenance and service.
Molded stringers are created using multiple layers of fiberglassengineered fabric for lighter weight, superior strength and resistance to water damage. Extra reinforcement in key areas provides rigid structural support for engines and generators.

The Fuel Fight Educating boaters on the effects of ethanol in marine fuel.
F
uel has been a hot topic of discussion lately. It’s surprisingly not the gas’s price tag that’s a concern to boaters, but rather the ingredients in the fuel. Ethanol — a word to shutter at when it comes to recreational boats — is becoming more prevalent in our fuel. When ethanol is blended into marine fuel the effects can be disastrous, wreaking havoc on fuel lines and corroding the fuel system. Ethanol was developed with seemingly good environmental intentions: To lower greenhouse emissions and reduce the dependence on gasoline. The effects of ethanol in boats, however, have caused costly repairs and even engine failure. What’s making boaters even more concerned is that the amount of ethanol in the U.S.’ fuel supply is expected to increase by 2017. The Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) is causing higher ethanolblended fuels (including E15, or fuel with 15 percent ethanol) to show up at more stations across the nation. In fact, E15 is already available at pumps in 23 states, including all U.S. Great Lakes states. In July, BoatU.S. submitted more than 24,000 boaters’ comments urging the EPA to stop adding ethanol to our gas supply. To fight this potentially destructive plan by the EPA, we need to band together to protect our boats and educate other boaters against the harmful effects of ethanol. One of the most important times to make sure you’re protecting your fuel system is when preparing your boat for winter storage. With that in mind, contributor Gary Reich discusses what to do with your fuel at the end of the season (p. 36). But before you officially start thinking about winterizing your boat, spend some time exploring Michigan’s Elk River Chain of Lakes Watershed (p. 42). This spectacular series of lakes, rivers and waterways stretches 55 miles from the cities of Elk Rapids to Ellsworth. There is something for everyone: Crystal clear waters for boating on the famed Torch Lake; wildlife galore; quintessential paddling routes; and even nationally renowned beer. Contributor Kim Schneider guides us through the Chain and points out the highlights along the way. A short drive from the Chain of Lakes is a highly respected boat shop that has as long a history as Lakeland Boating; the family-owned Walstrom Marine is celebrating its 70th anniversary in 2016 (p. 38). This Harbor Springs-based marina (with additional locations in Cheboygan and Bay Harbor), has built its loyal customer base by offering quality boats (i.e. Chris-Craft and Tiara) and unsurpassed customer service. Lakeland assistant editor Sarah Kollmorgen got the insight into how the Walstrom family built such a successful boat business. Get out on the water and make some memories!

Star Tron Enzyme Fuel Treatment
It’s easy to fuel-up and hit the water. It’s important for the health of your boat’s engine, however, to pay close attention to what fuel you’re using and how it might affect your boat. The amount of ethanol in fuel, in particular, can impact engine functions. Star Tron Enzyme Fuel Treatment seeks to reduce the negative effects of ethanol and improve engine performance. Star Tron works with E5, E10, E15 and Rec 90 ethanolfree gas by improving combustibility, treating debris and moisture in fuel, reducing emissions and preventing corrosion. For more information, visit STARTRON.COM.

GREAT LAKES NEWS
NOAA Releases Algal Bloom Forecast The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) released its algal bloom forecast for Lake Erie, and they predict a mild to moderate season. This forecast follows the 2015 season, which featured the largest harmful algal bloom ever recorded. In 2014, a harmful algal bloom blanketed Toledo’s water intake, leaving more than 400,000 people without access to safe drinking water for three days.

Despite the seemingly good news, many environmental groups caution that it isn’t time to celebrate just yet — the dry season has kept the algae at bay. “If we’re going to finally tackle the serious threat of harmful algal blooms once and for all, we’re going to need the state of Ohio and all partners to act decisively to reduce farm runoff that is fueling these outbreaks,” says Gail Hesse, director of Great Lakes water programs for the National Wildlife Federation.

Evinrude recently announced an expansion of its E-TEC G2 lineup with some new midrange engines, making Evinrude’s next generation of G2 engines available to a wider range of boats and boaters. The new engine models from 150 to 200 hp include the G2 150, 150 High Output (H.O.), 175 and 200. “By expanding this award-winning product line to lower hp models, even more consumers can benefit from the industry-leading performance of Evinrude E-TEC G2,” says Alain Villemure, vice president and general manager of BRP’s Marine Propulsion Systems division. “From bass to pontoon, center console to aluminum fishing, freshwater to saltwater, the revolution is here.” Evinrude’s G2 line is not only efficient but green: The company says its models deliver up to 30 percent more torque, up to 15 percent better fuel efficiency and up to 75 percent fewer total regulated emissions compared to leading four-stroke outboard engines. The engines come in Mossy Oak and Ice Blue. Email kbush@lakelandboating.com to add your company’s Great Lakes news to Scuttle! For more information, visit EVINRUDE.COM.

Just because it’s celebrating its 70th anniversary doesn’t mean Walstrom Marine is slowing down anytime soon: The northern Michigan family-owned business recently made two changes to its staff. The first move was internal: The company promoted Charlie Duray, the service manager at Harbor Springs, to general manager at the Cheboygan location. Duray has been at Walstrom since 1982, when he joined the second-generation family-run business as a delivery captain. The second staff change brought some new blood into the company: Walstrom welcomed University of Akron graduate Kirsten Buccigrossi to the team as sales and marketing administrator. Buccigrossi has more than 10 years of experience in the marine industry and is a licensed boat captain. For more information, visit WALSTROM.COM and read our feature on page 38.

Mission Point Resort A freshly polished, historic haven settled amidst the treasure that is Mackinac Island. t’s early September and the Michigan summer sun is dripping its fiery colors over the horizon line. A breeze from Lake Huron tickles your cheek. You watch from the Bistro on the Green’s deck as boats coast by, carrying sun-kissed passengers. You’re lost in the beauty and splendor of this one-of-a kind Victorian island paradise. The waitress politely interrupts your thoughts to ask if you’d like another cold beverage. You tease your waitress, telling her that you don’t have to drive; after all, you are vacationing on an island with no cars, and you’re staying at one of the most charming resorts you’ve ever been to: Mission Point Resort. So you reply, “Yes, please, I’ll have another.” The birth of Mission Point Resort Mackinac Island is positioned between Michigan’s upper and lower peninsulas at the eastern end of the Straits of Mackinac. The island was once home to Native Americans before the Europeans ventured there. Rich and bountiful land provided abundant hunting and fishing for the natives. The southeast end of Mackinac Island later became known as Mission Point. During the 1820s, Rev. William Ferry established Mission House, a place for Native American children to learn and live. Shortly after, he created Mission Church. In 1954, the Moral Re-Armament (MRA) — a group that promoted purity, unselfishness, honesty and love — broke ground on what was to be their world conference center. One

of the historic features remaining at the resort today are the trusses in the resort’s main lobby; they join together at 36 feet tall in a formation that appears to be a teepee. Several more buildings were built by the MRA, including the Straits Lodge, which is still part of Mission Point Resort today. The land passed through many hands over the years: In 1966, the MRA gave much of its property to the Mackinac College; in 1970, it once again became a religious retreat; in 1977, it became a vacation destination and was renamed the Mackinac Hotel and Conference Center; and in 1987, it was sold and restored to its roots, taking the name Mission Point Resort. Dennert and Suzanne Ware, a down-to-earth Texas couple, purchased the resort in 2014 and immediately began a renovation. The metamorphosis Several million dollars of renovations have taken place at the 18-acre Mission Point Resort since 2015, with plans for continuous improvements. Liz Ware (the daughter of owners Dennert and Suzanne Ware) is overseeing the renovation. She has an extensive background in travel, hospitality, and meeting and convention planning. The majority of the renovations take place during the winter months while the resort is closed, which creates a few obstacles as no cars are allowed on the island, materials must be transported by carriage and boat, and the lake can (and usually does) freeze. Some of the renovations at the resort may not be visible to the guests who stay there, such as kitchen upgrades at several of the restaurants, infrastructure reinforcement and HVAC system updates, but they surely have improved the overall experience. Many visible transformations are present as well. Guests boast about their rooms’ altered aesthetics, including new pillows and bedspreads, updated wallpaper, new lighting fixtures and bathroom décor. Updated technology in the guest rooms includes new televisions, Wi-Fi and AC units. A major change that took place during the renovations is the introduction of a brand-new color palette throughout the resort. Many of the former guest rooms and hallways were outfitted with dark colors, giving them a more enclosed, lodge-like feel, which Liz says didn’t reflect the summer colors on the island. Now the hallways are painted an elegant cream and the guest rooms are brighter. The once underutilized deli area has now become the Market Place, which includes: The Boxwood Coffeeshop

& Café; The Boutique, featuring upscale clothing and accessories; and the Garden Gate, which sells sundries, gifts and souvenirs. A 5,000-square-foot Aveda spa opened this year, which is the quintessence of Zen with its relaxation room, full-service salon, abundant windows, cucumberflavored water and tranquil atmosphere. The lawns and gardens also had a facelift since the Ware family arrived. With the help of a new grounds keeper, the many new flowers and lush lawn are looking more spectacular than ever. By implementing all these new changes, the Ware family felt they could take Mission Point from a midscale property to an upscale resort; based upon excellent guest feedback, they have done just that. Soaring to new heights Core values are important to the hotel and staff, Liz says. They believe in internal culture, health and wellness, and have a particular interest in the culinary discipline. With the assistance of new executive head chef Gabriel Vera, the cuisine at Mission Point Resort’s four restaurants has been elevated to high-class fine dining. Vera and his team believe in a collaborative kitchen, and his team takes pride in their training. The response to the revolutionized menus has been immense. Liz’s personal recommendation is the whitefish — which she says is unlike any you will ever taste — and can be found at Bistro on the Greens, which has the best sunset view at the resort. Liz also says that omelets made by Chef Sheldon at the Round Island Bar & Grill are the best in the world. The resort can host six to seven weddings in a weekend, and they offer full catering. Mission Point is open May-October. This fall, they will be opening a new wine tasting room overlooking the Straits. The resort offers many amenities
and activities for their guests, such as lawn games, a historic theatre — which features movies, events, meetings, etc. — an on-site kite master, flower pressing and a complimentary kids club. You can even bring a furry friend along if you make prior arrangements with the resort. The main goal of the Ware family, general manager Bradley McCallum and the Mission Point Resort staff is a better overall guest experience. A view from above As the only resort with views of both Lake Huron and the Straits, guests have access to stunning sunrises and sunsets. The Great Lawn provides a sprawling space for people to congregate and take in the beauty of the lake. The general grandeur of the resort can be seen from Main Street. Mission Point Resort will continue to improve and provide the best possible service to the guests who travel from near and far. “I love the history, the feel of being on an island and the views. I love Michigan,” Liz says. “There is just something magical about Mackinac; it’s a piece of Americana — a true American experience.” H LAKELANDBOATING.COM

The Layup ✔ List
Apply a good quality wax before storing your boat.
Follow this fall layup checklist to get your boat ready for storage. hen it comes to prepping your boat for winter storage, the devil is in the details. Here’s how to keep your fall layup from turning into an expensive spring commissioning.
✔
Smart Sequencing In addition to listing systems that need to be winterized, your checklist should show a logical sequence of tasks. For example, if you need to wash or clean items during the winterization process, save decommissioning of your potable water system until afterwards.
Making a list of equipment and supplies needed — and gathering them prior to starting — will make layup tasks easier and quicker to accomplish.

Check list? Check! Start your fall layup by creating a checklist of tasks in order to eliminate mistakes. List all onboard systems and note what has to be done for each (equipment and owner’s manuals are a great place to start). Including step-by-step instructions — as well as a list of tools and supplies needed to complete each task — will make layup projects easier and quicker to accomplish. Be sure to note part numbers and quantities, and add to your vessel maintenance list for future reference. Tear out this fall layup checklist and get to it! Exterior ❏ Wash the hull to remove dirt and grime. ❏ Detail the fiberglass gelcoat by removing stains and oxidation, then apply a good quality wax. ❏ Clean and polish all metal hardware, then wax or coat with a moisture displacing lubricant to prevent corrosion. ❏ Clean all canvas (Bimini tops, curtains, etc.). Remove and store ashore where appropriate. ❏ Thoroughly scrub and clean all fish boxes and bait wells. Interior ❏ Clean the bilge and remove standing water, which can promote mold and mildew. ❏ Remove all food items and bottles or cans containing liquid (which can freeze and burst). Store ashore. ❏ Clean all upholstery, curtains and carpet. Remove bedding and store ashore. ❏ Clean and spray all cabinets and storage lockers with a mildew-preventative spray. Prop them open or leave ajar. Freshwater system ❏ Drain the entire freshwater system or add a solution of antifreeze. Be sure to remove all water from the system, however, to prevent freeze damage. Compressed air works well to purge the lines. ❏ Drain the water heater (if so equipped) and purge in conjunction with the above. ❏ Drain shower and other “gray water” sumps, or flush with antifreeze. Engine ❏ Change the oil and filter. Run your engine up to operating temperature beforehand, then run it five minutes or so afterward to distribute clean oil throughout the engine.
LAKELANDBOATING.COM
❏ Use fogging oil to protect the engine where appropriate. ❏ Check internal zincs and replace as needed. ❏ Check transmission fluid levels and change if recommended by the manufacturer. ❏ Change primary and secondary fuel filters. Check and clear bowls of water and sediment. ❏ Clean the engine exterior of oil and grime, then inspect for corrosion, loose hardware, leaks and other such issues. ❏ Flush the cooling system. If you have an open system, drain completely. For closed systems, drain the open, raw water side completely or fill with antifreeze. Check the strength and level of antifreeze in the reservoir. ❏ Inspect all hoses for looseness, leaks or signs of deterioration. Replace if questionable. ❏ Clean all water intake strainers, then drain or add antifreeze depending on the system they serve. ❏ Block exhaust outlets and air inlets to prevent unwanted “guests” (rodents, insects, etc.) from moving aboard. Batteries ❏ Check for loose or corroded wiring and connections. ❏ Top off wet cell batteries with distilled water. ❏ Clean battery terminals and protect with a corrosion inhibitor. ❏ Unless they are being properly float charged on-board, remove batteries and store them ashore in a climatecontrolled area, such as a garage. ❏ Place batteries on a float charge or bring to a full charge every month. Steering systems ❏ Inspect the system thoroughly for stiffness of operation, corrosion, loose or missing hardware, and unusual wear. ❏ For hydraulic systems, top off all fluid reservoirs and inspect system hoses and seals for leaks. Fuel system ❏ The general rule is to top off all permanently mounted fuel tanks prior to layup to avoid condensation issues. Portable tanks should be drained and stored empty. ❏ Fill tanks 95 percent full (allowing 5 percent for expansion) to reduce condensation and minimize explosive vapors. ❏ When filling gasoline tanks, use the highest octane gas available to help compensate for octane loss over the winter months. The use of ethanol-free gas is also recommended. ❏ Add appropriate fuel stabilizers and biocides. ❏ Once you’ve topped off the tanks and treated your fuel, run the engine for 15 to 30 minutes to disperse the treated fuel throughout the entire system. ★

ASK THE EXPERT by Elizabeth Altick
Passion for Petroleum Jerry Nessenson, ValvTect founder and fuel industry titan, retires (kind of).
Nessenson: As I approached 75 years “young,” I thought it best the company be prepared for the next 30 years. That is why I retired from the day-to-day operations in June 2014. I have now founded NESS Petroleum Marketers’ Solutions Group to help fuel marketers improve their strategic planning and execution. LB: In 1969 you joined Bell Fuels, which you helped build into one of the largest gasoline, diesel fuel and lubricant distributors in the U.S. How did the creation of ValvTect marine fuel and additives come about?
CONTACT Jerry Nessenson NESS Petroleum Marketers’ Solutions Group 847-687-0362 JNESSENSON@OUTLOOK.COM
Nessenson: In 1984, when the EPA announced the phase-out of lead in gasoline, I began researching a replacement. In 1986, I began marketing ValvTect (named for valve protection) Lead Substitute to Bell’s gasoline distributors. LB: Why does marine fuel require a special formulation or additive?
Nessenson: Gasoline and diesel fuel in marine applications are exposed to more heat and moisture, and remain in the tank longer than automotive applications. This causes destabilization, corrosion, bacteria in diesel fuel and phase separation in ethanol/gasoline blends. ValvTect marine fuel additives help prevent these problems. LB: How does ValvtTect increase fuel efficiency and economy?
Nessenson: In addition to protecting the engine, special detergent technology contained in ValvTect Marine Gasoline and ValvTect Marine Diesel cleans up power-robbing carbon deposits. This increases engine efficiency for increased power output and fuel economy. ELIZABETH ALTICK specializes in recreational marine, cultural and humaninterest subjects. She was formerly executive editor of a recreational boating magazine.

LB: How does ValvTect’s XP+ Gasoline Treatment differ from other additives to mitigate the effects of ethanol?
Nessenson: ValvTect Marine Gasoline Additive with Ethanol Gasoline Treatment contains special fuel additives to stabilize gasoline up to two years, protects against corrosion and helps prevent harmful phase separation.
LAKELANDBOATING.COM
LB: How did you persuade more than 700 marinas to become ValvtTect certified marinas?
Nessenson: We educated marina operators about the need for fuels formulated for marine engines. By supplying their customers with ValvTect Marine Fuels versus fuels refined for automobiles, they could reduce fuel-related engine problems and provide a more satisfying boating experience. LB: What changes in the fuel industry will affect the need for additives in the future?
Nessenson: With EPA-mandated ethanol gasoline and ultra-low sulfur diesel blended with biodiesel, the changes are already here. Marine engines will continue to need fuels enhanced with marine-grade additives. LB: What factors contributed to your success and longevity in the marine industry?
Nessenson: Being an avid boater for more than 40 years and in the petroleum industry for more than 50 years, I was well aware of fuel-related problems. By becoming involved with marine trade associations, I showed boaters and the industry ValvTect’s sincere commitment to making boating easy and fun. LB: What have been the most gratifying aspects of your career thus far?
Nessenson: I’m proud of branding nearly 700 ValvTect Marinas and achieving more than a 50 percent market share in major marine fuel markets. I’m happy when boaters tell us they go out of their way to purchase ValvTect Marine Fuels. I’m also glad our marina operators report that problems experienced with automotive brands, ethanol-blended gasoline and ultra-low sulfur diesel are virtually eliminated. LB: We heard you spend your leisure time on your 60-foot Sea Ray, Miss-Julie. Where is she docked?
Nessenson: The Miss-Julie (named for my daughters Missy and Julie) is docked at Southport Marina in Kenosha, Wisconsin — one of my favorite marinas. LB: Are there any Great Lakes destinations you would recommend?
Nessenson: There are so many! The Chicago harbors are first-rate. The small harbor towns in Door County are great. Michigan ports such as Saugatuck, Leland and Frankfort are also fantastic. LB: How would you sum up your career?
Nessenson: I believe I am one of the most fortunate people in the world to have had the opportunity to do the thing I love, in the industry I love, and with the people I love. ★

Monterey 378SE There’s no need to compromise with this versatile day cruiser.
E
ver feel like you’re being pulled in opposite directions while looking at new boats? Day boats appeal with their modern styling, upscale amenities and innovative features, but many lack overnight accommodations, making them unsuitable for cruising. Some cruisers, on the other hand, offer comfortable accommodations but come up short in areas like bow seating, cockpit amenities or outdoor deck space, so outdoor entertaining may be standing room only. Enter Monterey’s new 378SE, a comfortable day cruiser that delivers it all in a single, elegant package. Evidence of this boat’s dual personality starts at the transom, where a large seat with an adjustable back cushion offers forward- or aft-facing comfort and speaks to the boat’s playful side. The seat can also be set flat to create an enormous sunpad. The transom seat continues forward up the port side. To starboard, a retractable seat folds out of the gunnel to create a perfect, private spot for conversation. The adjacent bar behind the captain’s seat accommodates a removable grill, and the passenger console offers a sink and a refrigerator below, ensuring that cold drinks are never out
of reach. There’s also a pullout drawer in the seat base that houses a large, removable cooler. Up front on the bow, full wraparound seating provides yet another roomy and private space to relax. Stereo speakers and fold-down armrests in the forward-facing seat backs make this a great spot to unwind or worship the sun. The helm accommodates large, flush-mount multi-function displays. There is additional space for engine gauges for the MerCruiser or Volvo Penta power, and a number of push button controls for docking lights and other electronic accessories. The doublewide helm seat is electrically controlled and easily adjusted with the tilt wheel to suit captains of all heights. While all of this seating makes for a terrific day boat, it doesn’t come at the expense of accommodations below. Step into the cabin to find a full salon complete with a queen bed and a 40-inch flat screen TV, while the head compartment features large windows that usher in plenty of natural light. BOAT TEST
Absolute 45ST Y
GREAT LAKES CRUISING has always represented a challenging proposition for boat builders, due in no small part to the vast and unique environment we live in. You need a boat that’s big enough to handle large, open waters, yet compact enough to let you explore those smaller ports and anchorages that are often the best part of any trip. Some days you want an air-conditioned cockpit; other days you have the heat on full blast. The ability to cruise economically is a given, while the ability to quickly cover long distances is always a huge plus. In some respects, cruising the Great Lakes is not much different than cruising portions of the central Mediterranean, which makes it no surprise that one of the most talked-about new yachts on the Great Lakes hails from a builder in Italy. Founded in 2002 in the beautiful village of Piacenza, Absolute Yachts has rapidly gained a worldwide reputation for crafting 28

versatile, well-made boats that neatly bridge what would seem to be conflicting design goals — and they manage to do so without compromise. Under the leadership of Italian yacht industry veteran Angelo Gobbi, the young company has already won several major industry awards — including multiple wins in the prestigious World Yachts Trophies — for its sophisticated, eco-friendly construction processes and class-leading, fuel efficient designs. With a fleet comprising no less than 15 different designs from 40 to 72 feet, Absolute has attracted the attention of dedicated boaters all over the world who embrace the builder’s high-tech engineering flavored with classic Italian design. Perhaps no model in the lineup better embodies this seamless integration of form and function like the 45STY, which Absolute affectionately calls its “small megayacht.”

Reflecting its Italian heritage, the helm console on the 45STY is located to port of the salon. The attractive console is neatly designed and intuitively laid out, with most information presented on an optional 15-inch Raymarine HybridTouch multi-function display positioned in the center of the carbon fiber dash panel. Volvo Penta round gauges in a classic white-on-black pattern — complete with chrome accent bezels — display engine rpms, hour meter, oil pressure and fuel level. Volvo digital throttle controls to the left of the leather-wrapped tilt steering wheel offset joystick-docking controls to the right, preserving the helm’s clean appearance and balanced design. Combined with the delightfully upholstered leather driver’s seat with armrests and a reclining backrest, it’s safe to say the driver is thoroughly spoiled on the Absolute 45STY. The stylish and efficient helm only hints at what awaits below decks, however; this is where Absolute’s Italian roots truly come to the fore. As you walk past the helm and step below, a large day head to port is sure to impress not only with its upscale design and finishes, but with its sheer size. The day head provides ensuite access to the forward VIP cabin with queen bed, which is so bright and lushly appointed that it could be confused for the master suite. Three enormous privacy glass windows and an opening porthole along each sidewall provide incredible views when you wake each morning, allowing natural light and fresh air to flood right in. Why squint through the overhead hatch when you can enjoy the big-screen view? Any questions about the master cabin location are quickly answered when you take a few steps aft and into the largest full-width suite in its class. Equally bright and airy with its own three large windows and opening porthole along each
sidewall, the owner’s suite is more spacious — and certainly quieter — than some big city apartments. A full-length leather sofa to port provides the perfect place for lounging with a great view out those oversized privacy windows. A private and spacious ensuite head and large walk-in wardrobe quite literally provide all the comforts of home. Tasteful appointments throughout — including Canaletto walnut cabinetry, plush carpeting and varnished bedside tables with brown leather inserts — underscore Absolute’s talent for blending form and function.
Absolute 45STY Specifications LOA: 46'5" Beam: 13'5" Fuel Capacity: 343 gals.
Capable performance
The Italian contention that beauty is nothing without performance is clearly evident when one takes the helm and leads the Absolute 45STY to open water. With its joystickdocking control, easing in and out of even the tightest slips becomes child’s play; you’re encouraged to clear the harbor and see what this boat can do. With its twin Volvo Penta IPS 600 diesels generating 870 hp and mountains of torque, the 45STY starts to feel more like a sport boat as you ease the throttles forward. True to its European sophistication, the boat simply glides ahead with throttle input, and pushes the speedometer up over 20 knots so quickly and effortless that you can’t help but do a double take when you see the numbers climbing on the screen. Slide the throttles all the way forward and that number turns to 35 knots, which is plenty fast for a yacht this size. Slide the throttles back to a more leisurely 25 to 27 knots. Those big Volvos work with the yacht’s sophisticated hull design to deliver excellent fuel economy while burning just 1.14 gallons per mile, giving the 45STY a range of more than 300 nautical miles between fuel docks. Even with the sunroof and salon doors wide open, and the side windows down, subtle air-deflecting design elements ensure it’s still easy to maintain a conversation at reasonably normal volumes. If you don’t think that’s impressive, go try it in your car. Absolute’s little megayacht never ceases to find new ways to surprise and impress. With its capable performance, luxurious appointments, thoughtful amenities and sophisticated Italian style, the 45STY stands out, whether you cruise the Adriatic coast or the Great Lakes. One might be tempted to say it’s Absolutely perfect. ★

aybe you’ve noticed the signs: The days are getting shorter; trees are trading in their summer green for more colorful attire; migratory birds are pointing their beaks south for warmer climes; and heck, maybe you’ve already scraped some frost off your car’s windshield. Before you know it, we’ll be huddled inside watching football in front of the fireplace. Yep, just like they say in Game of Thrones: Winter is coming. While most boat owners have a pretty good handle on prepping and winterizing their pride and joy for storage over the long, cold winter, there’s one onboard system that consistently perplexes boat owners at layup time: The fuel storage and delivery system. With that in mind, we’ve set out to demystify the process with some solid tips from the pros. With any luck you’ll have a trouble-free startup come spring, instead of an expensive bill from the boatyard to fix what you forgot to address during winterization.
FIRST THINGS FIRST One of the most common questions boat owners have in regard to winterizing their fuel system is whether to leave the fuel tank(s) full or empty. Most experts we spoke with at local engine shops agree that a full tank is a happy tank — at least when it comes to winterizing. By filling onboard tanks before winter storage, large air spaces inside your tank are eliminated. Otherwise, these empty spaces may allow air to flow back and forth from the fuel vent all winter, which sets the stage for condensation to form during extreme fluctuations in winter temperatures. Eventually that condensation ends up as water in your fuel, Gasoline stabilizers line boat which can be bad news. supply shop shelves. 6- to 8-month-old fuel, virtually all of the pros we polled say that unless the tank is completely dry, they always fill their customers’ tanks prior to winterizing. Our engine gurus also say that this is the time when you’ll want to add a quality stabilizer to your fuel, whether you’re burning diesel fuel or gasoline. STABILIZE IT Straight from the mouths of our pros: One of the most important things you can do to prevent fuel system troubles in the spring is to add the appropriate stabilizer to your fuel, whether it’s diesel fuel or gasoline. Diesel fuel stabilizers not only clean fuel systems and protect fuel from excessive water absorption, but they also contain algaecides and fungicides that prevent microbial buildup in diesel fuel. Yes, you heard that right — there are lots of single-celled critters that feel right at home in your diesel fuel, and that can lead to problems. Many diesel additives also have cetane and combustion boosters that are designed to improve engine performance. Add the stabilizer as prescribed on the label before you fill up your tanks for the winter and you’ll save yourself a heap of trouble come spring. Folks with gasoline engines will also want to add a stabilizer at fill up time. Make sure to purchase a gasoline stabilizer that is designed to prevent the phase separation that can occur with ethanol-blended (E10) gasoline. Phase separation occurs when the ethanol in gasoline fuel absorbs so much water that it separates from the gasoline and falls to the bottom of the fuel tank in the form of a gooey sludge. Your engine cannot burn this water-saturated goop, and before you know it you’re footing the bill for an expensive repair. Our pros recommend stabilizers made by ValvTect and Sta-Bil, while others recommend products made by an engine’s respective manufacturer (Yamaha, Mercury, etc.). Still, the bevy of choices on the shelves can be overwhelming. Be sure to ask a pro at your marine supply shop for help if you’re not sure which stabilizer to add.

You should inspect your entire fuel delivery system at layup time, paying close attention to the condition of your fuel supply hoses and hose clamps. Pictured here are two diesel fuel tanks, supply lines, and primary filters (right) for a Cummins inboard diesel engine.
SYSTEM CHECK All set with a full tank of fuel? Great. Now it’s time to give your entire fuel system a detailed inspection, focusing in on hoses and hose clamps, for starters. You’ll want to follow your entire fuel delivery system, from the tank all the way to each engine (and don’t forget your generator, if you have one). Things to look for include: Cracking or splitting of the hoses; fuel leaks; excessive rust or corrosion on clamps; and clamps that are loose. Replace any suspect pieces with the properly-rated fuel hose and top-quality hose clamps. Be sure to also check your fuel vent hoses and the fuel vents themselves. Spiders and other insects often nest in fuel vents, causing them to clog. FILTER CHANGE Every single one of our engine experts recommend changing the primary fuel filters while winterizing. The most common type of primary fuel filter found on boats is called a water-fuel separator, and it’s
mounted somewhere between the fuel tank and the engine. Some boats may even have two installed. On outboard boats and boats with smaller inboards, this filter is typically a small screw-on filter that looks a lot like an oil filter, but with a clear or opaque plastic “sight” glass beneath it. Usual maintenance involves draining any water in the sight glass before unscrewing the whole affair, and then replacing the screw-on filter element. Bigger boats — or those with inboard or diesel engines — may have larger water-fuel separators/filters mounted inside the boat that should also be drained and changed. Onboard fuel filters on both inboard and outboard engines (often referred to as secondary filters) should be changed in accordance with the engine manufacturer’s maintenance schedules. Today’s modern four-stroke outboards, for example, can have as many as 20 different onboard fuel filters with varying replacement intervals; unfortunately, many of them can only be changed with proprietary tools. Inboard gasoline and diesel engines are often not as complex, but their filters generally have scheduled replacement intervals. Check with your local engine shop if you’re in doubt as to when these onboard engine fuel filters need swapping.
Our engine experts agree that filling up your boat’s tank(s) at layup time can help prevent a lot of headaches come spring.
, THAT S A WRAP There may be some intricacies in your own fuel system that you’ll have to discover on your own, but sticking with the essentials we’ve discussed should give you a good foundation to get your fuel system winterized. Do it correctly to get moving quickly come spring. ★ Outboard engines commonly have a spin-on fuel filter/water separator similar to this one fitted between the fuel tank and engine. The filter should be replaced at layup time and the lower bowl emptied of any water that is present.

THE PASSION Bay Harbor dock, 1940s
Walstrom Marine celebrates 70 years of providing unparalleled service, selling quality yachts and sharing a passion for boating. BY SARAH KOLLMORGEN n Lakeland Boating’s June 1949 issue, we noted the WWII Navy vets that had purchased the “somewhat run-down” boatyard in Harbor Springs, Michigan, three years prior seemed to be making a surprisingly good run of things in a short amount of time. Our writer noted a few key factors he believed were responsible for the Walstrom-Griffeth Co.’s (as it was originally named) “huge success:” Namely, its modern facilities; sale of Chris-Craft boats; efficient service department and year-round activity; and finally, the marina’s hard-working employees. This year, that same marina is celebrating its 70th anniversary. Walstrom Marine has grown into one of northern Michigan’s most respected marinas, with locations in Harbor Springs, Cheboygan and Bay Harbor. Although people have flocked to Harbor Springs for years to take advantage of the deepest natural harbor on the

Great Lakes, they now also come for Walstrom Marine’s unbeatable service and knowledgeable, friendly staff. It’s true that the company has grown and transformed quite a bit during the past seven decades; however, a closer inspection reveals that the marina still runs on the core characteristics we first noted in 1949.
Modern facilities
When Ward Walstrom, Roma Walstrom and Paul Griffeth purchased the run-down boatyard north of Little Traverse Bay in 1946, it was already 43 years old. It boasted 18 covered slips, storage for 100 boats and one of the largest elevator lifts in northern Michigan. For such an odd grab-bag of amenities to work with, our writer was impressed with the facilities that were added on to this “progressive” marina by Walstrom and Griffeth: There was a lounge with toiletries, a

Chris-Crafts and Beyond During its very first three years in business, our writer noted that the marina had sold an impressive volume of Chris-Craft boats. Today, Walstrom Marine continues to sell top of the line brands. Boaters can browse a selection of Hatteras, Tiara, Pursuit, and of course Chris-Craft models. shower, dress and powder rooms, and even an automatic washing machine. The renovations and improvements to the marina were just getting started. The next few decades saw rapid change: In 1952, Griffeth left the company; the following year, the name of the marina officially became Walstrom Marine. In 1960, the marina developed a yacht basin of 100 slips with storage, service and haulout. By 1969, Walstrom decided to really spread its wings and constructed 32 condominiums on land near the basin, named “Marina Village,” with the idea of attracting boaters who envisioned a space to park their boats in the front yard. It was not always easy sailing for Walstrom Marine, however; the marina had its fair share of working through high and low water (metaphorically and literally). In 1985, for example, high waters rose 3 feet over the main floor. In
2002, a windstorm blew the roof off an entire building. But Ward and Roma Walstrom built the marina to last. Today, Walstrom serves three locations. The original Harbor Springs location now boasts 140 slips, indoor storage, a showroom, a service department and the Walstrom Marine Basin Yachting Center, which has a boater’s lounge, bike racks, showers, laundry and a patio. The Cheboygan Marina has 40 slips, outdoor and heated indoor storage, a 70-ton travel lift and more. In Bay Harbor, boaters can stop by the sales office and shop at Propellers, Walstrom’s retail store. “We have deep roots and deep water,” says CEO Ward Walstrom Jr. “The history of Harbor Springs along Traverse Bay is a great history of large watercraft that have been coming in for more than 100 years. That’s what we’re known for.” This fall, Walstrom expects to complete the construction of an additional storage building capable of holding 60-foot boats.
More than customer service
Dave Lyle
Ward Walstrom Jr.
Our original reviewer in 1949 was quite impressed with Walstrom’s service department and their unique use of a service request sheet. “This type of scheduled operation has made it possible for the yard to have every boat ready on schedule for the owners as they return to Harbor Springs for the season,” we noted. Today, employees at Walstrom 70th Anniversary Gala
Marine are just as concerned about customers spending as much time on the water as possible. “In Michigan we have something called winter, and you can’t boat in the winter,” says Dave Lyle, the current president and COO of Walstrom. “Every summer day is precious. You don’t want to have a down day when you’re boating.” Employees at Walstrom are highly trained. The full-service marina offers everything from repairs to refinishing, carpentry and installations. Plus, everyone on the team simply loves being on the water. At Walstrom, providing quality service means more than simply putting the customer first, Lyle says. He compares the company’s business philosophy to a three-legged stool: The customer is one leg, the employee is one leg and the company itself is one leg. For success, decisions need to be made that benefit all three legs of the stool. “It’s service. That was the foundation for our parents, and now for us,” says Ward Jr. “People know what they’re going to get with us.” Third-generation boaters who return annually to Harbor Springs aren’t the only ones familiar with the marina’s top-notch service department. In 2005, Walstrom was selected as the sole recipient of Tiara Yachts Platinum Service Dealer award. That same year, Walstrom was also one of the first marinas to become an official Michigan Clean Marina. For Ward Jr., however, real gratification comes from seeing satisfied customers. “When we’re together as a team and we have a customer come in and say, ‘You guys are great!’ out of the blue: That’s what makes it all worthwhile,” Ward Jr. says. “These are all moments that you feel a sense of accomplishment, where all the hard work has paid off.”
Building a Community
While Walstrom has many qualities that look good on paper — high-quality boats, a class-act service department, extensive facilities — it’s the family atmosphere permeating the business that seems to keep customers coming back. Walstrom Marine is currently a secondgeneration run family business. Fred Walstrom joined the company in 1969 after

completing his engineering degree from Michigan State University, and Ward Jr. joined the sales department in 1971 after earning his business degree, also from MSU. The two bought Walstrom from their parents in 1983. Ward Jr. says he’s confident the business will stay in the family. However, you don’t have to be blood-related at Walstrom to be part of the family. Lyle became a member of the Walstrom team after befriending Ward Jr. in college. While on his way down to the Bahamas on a sailing trip in 1981, Lyle stopped by to visit his friend for what he originally thought would be a few nights. “I sailed into town and I never left,” Lyle says with a laugh. He still hasn’t made it back to the Bahamas. Many employees stick around Walstrom for a long time — sometimes for 20, 30 or 40 years. Some long-time customers request specific employees by name. In 2015, Bill Blakemore retired from Walstrom Marine after more than 50 years of service. Shortly after, he was inducted into the Michigan Boating Industries Association Hall of Fame. “The longevity here is remarkable,” Lyle says. “We take very seriously offering full-time jobs to our people year-round. That’s hard in our business, but we think it’s important.” Lyle says the close community atmosphere at Walstrom makes it that much easier to run the business, too. Day-to-day decisions can be made quickly and easily, and don’t require bureaucratic red tape that big corporate companies might run into. “Even though we’re family run, we do have a corporate structure so that we don’t do anything stupid,” Lyle says. This loyalty to a sense of community extends beyond the employee room. Walstrom hosts events each year for boaters, including its big summer rendezvous. Last year’s multi-day rendezvous on Mackinac Island attracted more than 100 Walstrom customers and staff. In early August this year, Walstrom teamed up with Tiara Yachts and SkipperBuds to host a three-day Tiara Great Lakes Rendezvous in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. The Walstrom family has also been active in the Harbor Springs community. Ward Sr. helped build the local airport, Roma was key in building the Hillside

Apartments for low-income senior citizens, and Fred has been on the city council’s planning commission, to name just a few things. Walstrom employees are also involved in a number of conservancy and community efforts. “We’re a strategic stakeholder in the community,” Ward Jr. says. “With more power comes more responsibility. When we’re successful, we feel the need to give back.”
Looking towards the future
To celebrate 70 years (and counting), Walstrom held an invitation-only gala for members of the boating community in late July, featuring food, drinks and a “really good Motown band,” says Lyle. When asked about the future of the Walstrom family in the company, Ward Jr. says he is unconcerned. Although it looks like there will be Walstrom blood

working in the company for years to come, what really matters is keeping those core principles intact: Highly-trained employees, top-of-the-line products and facilities, and excellent service. “Now it’s a matter of the next generation,” Ward Jr. says. “And if it isn’t the next generation, it’ll be whoever has the passion to keep it going.” ★

f the sky is the deep, cloudless blue of a northern Michigan September day, the water a trademark aqua more often associated with the Caribbean, then somewhere in the middle of stunning Torch Lake is where you’ll likely find Paul Fabiano. He’s the guy in the neon shirt emblazoned with the name “Pizza Boy.” The name started as a joke, but he wants to be easy to spot as he delivers a double cheese with pepperoni — maybe some ice, soda and sundries, too — to the sandbar that has become a swimming hole, a boat dock and a social center all in one. Fabiano didn’t want to make boaters lift anchor and lose a prime spot on Torch’s sandbar just because they got hungry. Order a pizza and he’ll deliver that and other convenience items from Fabiano’s on the River directly to your boat. Or simply stroll in the knee-deep water to Dave’s Grill Burger Barge where you can have burgers fresh off the pontoon grill. This casual vibe permeates the Elk River Chain of Lakes Watershed — a 55-mile-long waterway consisting of 14 lakes and connecting rivers that stretches from Elk Rapids along the Grand Traverse Bay to the village of Ellsworth to the northeast. While Torch is the Chain’s sexy cover model with its Caribbean resemblance, prize muskies and mega-mansions lining the shore, there’s much more to explore. Venture through the Chain to find nesting loons, bald eagles and river otters in the protected rivers and wilder lakes; small towns with old-fashioned general stores and new-fashioned cuisine; orchards with overflowing farm stands; and a growing number of microbreweries, distilleries and wineries with a regional flair all their own. Small boats can navigate the majority of the Chain — which is only broken up by the dam north of Lake Bellaire — while larger boats can easily run their engines between the lower lakes (Elk Lake, Torch Lake and Lake Bellaire), which are favorites for sailing and watersports. The rivers and lakes that make up the upper Chain (including Six Mile, Hanley, Benway, Intermediate, Wilson, Beals and Ellsworth lakes) are some favored venues for paddleboarding, kayaking and fishing. You won’t be disappointed, no matter what part of the Chain you travel.

The lower half of the Chain starts at the “north’s best teensy town,” as named by a local reader poll that extolled its small town charm, big city amenities and natural beauty. You can boat into Elk Rapids from Lake Michigan; the Edward C. Grace Memorial Harbor and boat launch offers slips on both Lake Michigan’s Grand Traverse Bay and Elk Lake — bodies of water that sandwich the town. The Elk Rapids Hydroelectric Dam off the Elk River divides the lakes, but both marinas Common Loon are walking distance to the town’s circa 1940 single-screen Elk Rapids Cinema — one of the venues for the popular summertime Traverse City Film Festival. Enjoy fine dining at the popular Siren Hall, where you can try fresh oysters, Blue Hill Bay mussels or Lake Michigan whitefish. Sample some spicy Cajun cuisine at Pearl’s New Orleans Kitchen, or dine on the Elk River at Riverwalk Grill and Taproom, famous for its extensive list of Michigan craft brews. You’ll find live music through September at the town’s new wine bar, Cellar 152, and at the cozy Java Jones coffee shop. You can take a courtesy shuttle to quirky, worth-the-trip art galleries like Blue Heron, Twisted Fish and Mullaly’s 128. Some of Michigan’s prettiest sand beaches stretch along the town on its Lake Michigan shoreline; this is also where an early settler found the elk antlers that inspired the town’s name. And as you start your boating excursion into the Chain of Lakes via Elk Lake, you come upon more hints of the region’s history. “On a really clear day you can see remnants from the logging era — huge diameter logs that were lost and ended up sinking to the bottom,” says Matt Drake, COO of Short’s Brewing Company and president of a non-profit working to develop a Chain water trail. “And there’s a shipwreck, the Albatross, right off the kayak launch.” The Elk Rapids Iron Company operated this circa-1880 tugboat, running lumber from upstream forests to the blast furnace in the then-thriving industrial port. But while natural resources like lumber once drew people to the area, today it’s natural beauty and resources like the prized lake trout and other

If you follow the 45th parallel north, you pass through the French wine regions of Bordeaux, the deserts of Mongolia, the northernmost tip of Japan — and Michigan’s Torch Lake. Here, you’re standing (or boating, depending on your locale) atop the imaginary line marking the halfway point between the North Pole and the Equator. Near Elk Rapids, a 12-foot cairn of stones built in 1938 marks part of the state’s 140-mile long Polar-Equator Trail. A university club attempted to create a rival to more popular trails like the Appalachian trail — the way it meandered through beautiful natural areas full of wildlife. But people kept stealing their signs and travelers got easily lost. Today, few trail markers remain, but lore about it does. The famous silk trade route followed the line, and a legendary belief claims that anyone who bathes in a lake or river crossed by the 45th parallel would be cured of ailments. So dive right in!

Torch Lake to Grass River
The Ojibwa Native Americans who first populated the Chain used torches to attract fish, then harvested them with spears and nets, inspiring the name “Torch Light Lake” — shortened to Torch Lake. Today, Torch Lake is Michigan’s longest inland lake at 18 miles and its deepest at an average depth of 111 feet. It’s arguably the prettiest, too. Locals often repeat the claim that National Geographic once named Torch Lake the third most beautiful lake in the world, but no one is quite sure if that’s truth or urban legend. Even Alden Outfitters, which rents water equipment along the lake’s southeast edge, hedges its bets, making the statement on its website under the heading, “Rumor Has It.”

mammoth fish that draw people in. Record-sized muskies (nearly 5 feet and 60 pounds) have been caught in the Chain. What is true is that a sunny day will transform Torch Lake into an tropical retreat — its varying depths painting the water an array of sapphire hues. It’s also exceptionally clear. “It’s often referred to as the northern Caribbean, and you can see 30 feet down,” notes Fabiano. “You have to experience it to understand it.” One of the largest public access parks sits at the northern tip of Torch Lake in Eastport. Head a bit east for freshly baked apple and cherry pies, hayrides and other seasonal fun at the series of farm markets located along U.S. 31; or travel a mile inland to find Providence Farms. The large organic farm runs a produce stand out front. It offers occasional cooking classes and autumn gourmet farm dinners. On a recent day, an orphaned baby cow on a leash lounged on the farmhouse porch and baby sheep grazed the front yard. Alden, situated on a bend of a scenic country road on Torch’s southeast side, has been compared to a New England hamlet with its charming shops and streets that end in the blue of Torch. Take your picnic to the Depot Park and Museum; this was once the most popular stop on the “Resort Special” route. Locals would gather to watch passengers disembark en route to the many summer camps and cottages. Today, it’s a summer museum featuring historic photos and memorabilia. Stroll to the Alden Mill House to sample blends for dips, cooking and summer grilling. Stop at La Voie Designs for boutique clothing or The Pear Tree for local art. Before entering the next stretch of the Chain, stop in for a bite to eat at Dockside; this local favorite offers up fresh burgers, deli wraps and appetizers on the large lakeside deck. Dewitt Marine — located at the mouth of Clam River on Torch Lake — is a full-service, family-owned facility offering the best pontoon boat rentals in northern Michigan; new and used boat sales; slips; boat service and repair; fuel; and a store to pick up extra provisions. Some of the wildest stretches of the Chain follow as Torch flows into the Clam River, Clam Lake and Grass River. There, the Grass River Natural Area protects 1,443 acres of wetlands. Navigable by boat, it also offers hiking paths, events like loon pontoon viewing cruises, and guided paddles past the occasional river otter, mink or muskrat. Here, you’re almost to Lake Bellaire and the town of Bellaire — the Antrim County seat, a regional hub and a Mecca for golfers and microbrew fans.

“We like to say we’re in the middle of nowhere and the middle of everything,” notes Chris Hale, vice president of Bellaire’s Shanty Creek Resort. The resort boasts four championship golf courses — including Arnold Palmer’s The Legend — some of the state’s most challenging skiing courses, restaurants and a spa. One golf course offers FootGolf, a growing sport where you kick a soccer ball over the course into a series of enlarged holes. You can drive a ball off the patio of nearby winery Torch Lake Cellars, or sip some Deepwater Point, a locally made Pinot Grigio named after a Torch Lake drop-off; 330', a red named after the lake’s deepest point; or Torch River Riesling. Bee Well Meadery is locally-minded as well. Head to the tiny tasting room on the edge of town to sip a mead crafted from local cherry juice and honey, another from local apples mixed with Sri Lankan cinnamon, or one made from locally-grown hops combined with wildflower honey. The story is fun, too: It’s run by brothers whose great-grandfather once bottled and sold water from the natural springs along the banks of Clam Lake. Shanty Creek offers a shuttle into downtown Bellaire, home to a variety of shops and restaurants anchored by Short’s Brewing Company’s brew pub. Owner Joe Shorts’ expanded pub offers live music, indoor and outdoor seating, a large food menu and such creative microbrew blends (often with particularly kooky names) that he’s developed a cult following; beer lovers occasionally fly in for a visit just to drink Short’s beer. Try ordering Beery McBeerface with a straight face as part of a sampler, accompanied by options like Power of Love, Alien Einstein, Hoppin’ the Cherry and Controversiale. Shorts launched the Chain’s trademark event, the 40-mile Paddle Antrim Festival (this year held September 16-17), which was originally offered as a celebration of the region’s pure water — a critical element in both beer and tourism fun. Paddling is also the only way to cover the entire Chain, since kayaks can navigate the shallow connections between some of the upper lakes and portage over the Bellaire Dam. All of the upper lakes are open to motorized boats, too. The adjacent towns are worthy stops, and the region surrounding them even more so.
Chain’s end
Traverse City Visitors
Just north of Intermediate Lake, Central Lake has thriving wildlife and a relaxed downtown. This friendly village is along the Chain’s no-wake zone and offers a tranquil rest stop. Shoppers love Adams Madams for its fun mix of housewares, local art, clothing and wall hangings with truisms like, “A day at the lake is worth a month in the city.” Bachmann’s General Store offers much of what it did decades ago: Old-fashioned candy, Slinky’s and Magic 8-Balls. There’s a treat for grown-ups at new Mammoth Distillery; opened in June of 2016, it offers tastings of its locally distilled vodka, gin, rum and whiskey. Ellsworth, at the Chain’s end on Ellsworth Lake, features a little downtown but plenty of off the beaten path destinations. Fish off the pier, explore the archery range and walking paths, or walk one of the Midwest’s largest labyrinths in the town’s 4-acre park. Celebrate at Rowe Inn, where the French country cuisine and extensive wine list have gotten national acclaim, or dine instead at a spot where the region’s heart is as memorable as the food. At Ellsworth’s volunteer-run Front Porch Cafe, meals come with suggested donation but no set price. Nearby shorelines teem with osprey, eagles, herons and migrating sandhill cranes. “You sort of see it all by paddling through,” notes Drake. “But there’s beauty that’s equivalent. Some prefer lively Torch, while others prefer the upper Chain, where you’re closer to the shoreline and have a quieter, more natural experience.” ★

Grand Haven, MI Secluded and comfortable haven on Lake Michigan bluffs.
W
hen homeowner Marge Potter was young, she vividly remembers walking the Lake Michigan shore in Grand Haven, pointing up to a homey cottage perched on the bluff and thinking, “That’s the most wonderful place in the world.” In 1987, Potter and her husband Paul purchased that very home — a five-bedroom, 100-year-old cottage — and settled right in. Sitting on 11 acres and overlooking 503 feet of Lake Michigan water frontage, the home is a private, scenic haven. “It’s beautifully constructed,” Potter says. “You get all the fairy tale possibilities of an older place on the lake, but with all the modern amenities.” The Potters completely updated the home about four years ago: The lower level now features a bedroom, sitting area and full bathroom; the main level includes the kitchen, dining and living rooms, two bedrooms and 2.5 baths; and the top floor houses two guest rooms, a half bath and a “secret room.” “No adults know how to get in there,” Potter laughs. “Only children under 8 can magically enter through a bookcase.” Guests love the quirky, hanging bed in the guest room, Potter says. It’s made out of the home’s original beams and

sways gently; giving the sensation you’re outside on a porch, listening to the lap of waves. The heart of the home — the living room — is original and the previous owners used it as a changing house. In the center of the room lies a large, three-story cooking fireplace, complete with a baking shelf and cast iron holder for pots. “It’s got fabulous ambiance,” Potter says. Potter enjoys creating puzzles with her grandkids on the table in the sunroom, but her favorite part of the home is outside underneath the pergola in the courtyard, just off the living room. It has incredible character: The pergola is covered in wisteria; there’s a grand fireplace; and some of the first electric streetlights from Detroit line the walkways. Serene landscaping, an outdoor shower, a private hot tub, and large, lakeside decks round out the outstanding exterior features of his West Michigan retreat. Best of all, the lake is only 38 steps down. “The home is very comfortable,” Potter explains. “It’s conducive to conversation, playing games and being able to have a panoramic view of the water.” ★

Stay for the sunsets on Lake Huron’s eastern shore.
W
hen the day winds down, both boaters and pedestrians alike gather at Port Elgin Harbour in the town of Saugeen Shores, Ontario. The federally owned marina run by the local government is perched on the eastern shore of Lake Huron, facing west, bestowing the marina with some truly spectacular sunset views. “The sunsets here are world renowned,” says Mark McElroy, Port Elgin’s harbormaster. “This could be an oceanfront location.” This deep, easily accessible marina sits about halfway between the southern edge of Lake Huron and the North Channel, making it an ideal spot for boaters to spend a day or two as they hop the coast for a North Channel or Georgian Bay adventure. Boaters approaching the marina from the water should look for Logie’s Rock, marked by a light buoy 2 miles northwest of the marina, which leads to a buoyed channel. Be sure to stick within the marked channel as you make your way to Port Elgin Harbour; outside it, the depth quickly tapers off to a shallow 2 feet. Boaters stopping by for a day or two should call ahead to reserve one of the marina’s 10-15 transient slips. Total, the marina can accommodate approximately 240 vessels

with its floating docks and several hundred-foot concrete pier. Many boaters — including those from the nearby Port Elgin Yacht Club — store their boats in the marina’s north parking lot during the off-season. Although there are no on-site repair services, McElroy says Port Elgin Harbour employees are more than happy to call local businesses, including a traveling mechanic, if boaters run into trouble. For those with a few hours to kill before sunset, there are two nearby beaches (perfect for picnicking) and an on-site restaurant, The Harbor Light, where you can grab a bite to eat. The little town of Port Elgin is also a short walk or bike ride away, McElroy says. Boaters who can’t make it up to Saugeen Shores and the North Channel until next year may be in luck: The Canadian government has pledged $1.2 million to replace Port Elgin Harbour’s main pier and provide new fuel-supplying equipment. The renovation will begin in November and is scheduled to be completed in March 2017. “It will really give the harbor a new look,” McElroy says. “We’re excited about that.” ★

CLASSIC CRAFTS by Kate Bush
Elegante
ADD YOUR BOAT
72
It all began in 1961 on the docks of Whiticar Boat Works in Stuart, Florida: The motoryacht Elegante started out as Aphrodite when she was built for John Hay “Jock” Whitney by boat builder Curt Whiticar. The boat held many names throughout the years. In the early 1980s, Louise O’Connor of Houston, Texas rechristened the Bandarlog and added much of the teak and mahogany you’ll see on the Elegante today. In 1995, O’Connor sold the Bandarlog to Wilbert and Peg Hamstra of Indiana, who rechristened the Elegante and began a 16-year voyage with her. For more than 50 years, the Elegante has been host to fishing trips and cruising explorations everywhere from the North Channel and Nova Scotia to Naples, Florida and the Bahamas. In 2011, William and Pat Anton began their time aboard the Elegante. Since then, a complete overhaul of the yacht began by the current crew, Jack and Renee Grimes. Some upgrades were functional, some mechanical, and there were quite a few navigational and technological improvements. Other upgrades include a custom swim ladder; wine storage; commercial icemakers and refrigeration; floating islands; and a special champagne chilling and storage system. If you know the Antons, you’ll understand their need for a proper audio system and an authentic disco ball, which was included in the overhaul. The Elegante celebrated her 50th birthday in 2014 where it all began — at Whiticar Boat Works. Email kbush@lakelandboating.com if you have a Classic Craft with a good story to share! — Jack Grimes, Harbor Springs, MI
