PROTECT THE LAKES â–?

HEALTHY SHORELINES CREATE HEALTHY LAKES

Since the first wave of settlers cleared through the brush and shoreline vegetation to gain clear access to Minnesota’s lakes and rivers, shoreline development was forever changed. As shoreline development progressed, more vegetation was removed, and shorelines altered. While each small alteration may have a small overall impact on the adjacent water, the cumulative effect around the entire lake can be great. Each of these small shoreline alterations and vegetation removals allow slightly increased stormwater runoff rates, which also increases the rate in which pollution enters the water. The urge for homeowners to have for manicured lawns extended right up to water edge increases the potential for nutrient pollution coming from the land in the form of lawn fertilizer, grass clipping, pet waste, and leaf litter. While nutrients may be 4

BY BRENT ALCOTT, PELICAN WATERSHED DISTRICT

beneficial for lawns, they also are utilized in a similar way in the lake, to grow algae, which often causes nuisance, and often toxic, algal blooms. Shoreline vegetation helps to slow and absorb these pollutants (phosphorus) from entering the lake and helping to preserve clean, clear water. As owners of shoreline property, maintaining a healthy shoreline is necessary to maintaining a health lake. Healthy shorelines are simply lake edges that are planted with shrubs, tree, or other perennials along the waters edge. Shoreline planting plans are also customizable and can be modified to fit your needs and landscape preferences. Often there is cost-share funds available homeowners. In many cases the total cost for the installation is significantly less costly than alternative rap-rap along installations.

SHORELINE PLANTS HAVE LOTS OF BENEFITS OVER LAWN BECAUSE THEY: TRAP POLLUTANTS: Plants with deeper roots slow overland runoff and filter up to nine time more phosphorus that turf grasses. STABILIZE SHORELINE: The root structure is better at stabilizing the shoreline and preventing erosion than rip-rap. Because the plant regrows each year, they are flexible and self-sustaining. PROVIDE HABITAT: Provides essential habitat and food for birds, butterflies, turtle, frogs, and many other beneficial and beautiful wildlife. DETER GEESE: Natural buffers deter geese from gaining access to the adjacent turf grass and therefore will also reduce the nuisance goose “leftovers”. SAVE TIME: Once established, very little maintenance in needed, allowing homeowner to enjoy the lake rather than yard work. PROTECT INCREASE PROPERTY VALUE: A mix of grasses and wildflowers can add beauty to your shoreline and increase property values. Additionally, a study conducted on the Upper Pelican River Watershed determined that a decrease in water clarity of only 1-foot would equate to a loss of $11,500 per parcel of lakeshore value. Please contact your local Watershed District or Soil and Water Conservation District for more information about financial assistance for a shoreline planting project. ▐

MINNESOTA DNR FISHERIES

Minnesota has a wide diversity of lakes and rivers which comprise some of the state’s most valuable ecological, scenic, and economic assets. Each waterbody is an asset to the local fauna and human communities. Each waterbody is also a reflection of the land use activity within its watershed and on its shoreline. Maintaining and enhancing high quality aquatic habitat and healthy ecosystems are essential for contributing to the quality of life we enjoy, sustaining fish populations that are safe to eat, and supporting a multibillion dollar angling economy. Listen to the Lake Life Wknd Podcast to hear Nathan Olson, the Area Fisheries Supervisor at the MN DNR, discuss the connections that exist among all of these factors, and how the Department of Natural Resources works to manage and conserve them.

LAKES COUNTRY ▐

THE HEART OF THE LAKES - BECKER AND OTTER TAIL COUNTIES

Abundant lakes. Serene streams and luscious forests. Trails to lose your time, and find something more valuable. Becker and Ottertail Counties offer plenty to do, no matter the season. Locals embrace the cold. Actually— they look forward to it. The deep purr of snowmobiles. The reflective crosscountry ski trails underneath snowladen trees. Tourists come from all around to visit the famous Detroit Mountains Recreation Area. Take your pick: skis, snowboards, or tubes. With trails for all types, anyone can take a thrilling ride down the hill. Summers are a breeze too. Take a day (or a couple) to explore the North Country National Scenic Trail. 60 miles of the nation’s longest hiking trail weaves its way through the Detroit Lakes area. Experience breathtaking views and wildlife under hardwood tree canopies, 10

or on top of Inspiration Peak. Explore, hike and stay at beautiful Maplewood and Glendalough state parks. If you’re feeling less adventurous, relax next to one of the 1,400 lakes. Take the kids out on the boat. Jump in to fight the heat. Cast a line and catch yourself some dinner. Forget about all your worries. Afterward, grab a bite at Zorbaz Pizza, Beach Bums, or any of the local restaurants. Dig into the area’s rich

history at Fort Juelson or the Prospect House Museum. Browse the flea markets and craft fairs. Be entertained by yearround rodeos and concerts. This area is a place to leave the world for a while. With 3,412 square miles of fun, the only decision you need to make is where to start.

▐ REINVENTING DETROIT MOUNTAIN WITH YEAR-ROUND ACTIVITY

Detroit Mountain has an impressive amount of history behind it. Family owned and operated since the 1950s, it offered lake life fun during the long, cold months of Minnesota. Skiing, snowboarding and snow shoeing on the trails provided the opportunity to still be active and have more enjoyable winters. After closing in 2004, locals missed making memories on the mountain. Instead of just reminiscing, a group passionate about keeping the community close and alive got together to reinvent Detroit Mountain. They founded Detroit Mountain Recreation Area Inc. and set out to make it a year-round destination. The project started gaining ground in 2010 where many ideas were tossed around with individuals in the community to resuscitate the beloved mountain. In 2013, machinery owned by friends of the group groomed a mini tubing hill on Little Detroit Lake and original tubes from the facility were supplied to attract more supporters for the project. By 2014, Detroit Mountain’s doors and hill were open and ready for action. After having over 25,000 visitors each year, the opportunity to improve the facility was a major priority. Recent improvements for the mountain are the 3 miles of groomed fat biking trails, a winter sport quickly gaining popularity, and fat bike rentals available in the retail shop.

Other major additions include the biking and hiking trails making Detroit Mountain a year-round destination once the snow finally melts. Within the area are over 10 miles of mountain biking trails and the opportunity to hike on the ski hill. The trails are engineered to host all levels of mountain bike enthusiasts and scenic outlooks for hikers and nature buffs alike. Detroit Lakes and Detroit Mountain are lucky enough to host 2 out of 12 races that are held during Minnesota Mountain Bike Series. The mountain in particular hosts “The Shakedown” race which offers a mix of flowy single track trails, switchback climbs and gravity routes to provide a unique race course for the riders. Warmer months also deliver the opportunity for other attractions including their Pond Skim which is a celebration of the end of winter, Music on the Mountain where concerts are held onsite, and many more events to memorialize summertime. Open 7 days a week and year-round, the new and improved Detroit Mountain should definitely be a part of your entertainment arsenal in the heart of the lakes country. 11

CABIN CHEF A NEW TWIST ON FISH ▐

BRINGING VARIETY TO THE TABLE

Whether you have a freezer full of fish or freshly caught, this recipe provides a great new way to prepare fish rather than the typical pan-fried. It’s sure to impress guests or create an ambiance of the summer days ahead. Mix up a margarita or Moscow Mule to go with it and relax. Rhubarb is another food in plentiful supply this time of year. The lemon glaze on these rhubarb bars enhances the sweet and tart flavors, leaving your taste buds dancing and dreaming of more.

BEER BATTER FISH TACOS WITH SPICY CILANTRO LIME SLAW INGREDIENTS (FISH) 1 pound of Crappie or any lake fish ¼ cup of cornmeal 2 cups of flour 1 tbsp of seasoned salt 1 can of beer of your choice

PREPARE 1. Mix cornmeal, flour and salt in a bowl. Add beer while stirring until you reach your desired consistency. (Typically 12 0unces) If it’s too thick, the fish will have a ‘thick’ bready coating. If it’s too thin, the batter won’t stick well when frying. 20

2. Coat fish in the batter. Heat oil of your choice in a pan until shimmering. 3. Add fish and turn when golden brown. Remove when both sides are fully cooked and the fish is white and flaky on the inside. Place finished fish on a paper towel lined plate to absorb any excess oil.

INGREDIENTS (SLAW) 1 cup sour cream 2 tbsp mayo or miracle whip 2 cloves crushed garlic 1 cup fresh cilantro ½ tsp honey 2-3 jalapeños (with or without seeds) Juice of 1 lime ¼ tsp of salt to taste 4 cups of fresh finely chopped cabbage

PREPARE 1. Add sour cream, mayo/miracle whip, garlic, cilantro, honey, jalapeños, lime juice and salt in the food processor and pulse until completely combined. 2. Add the dressing to the cabbage and toss evenly to coat.

SWEET AND SPICY PINEAPPLE SALSA INGREDIENTS 1 pineapple 3 tomatoes 1 bunch of cilantro 1 cup red onion 3 jalapeños 2 tbsp fresh lime juice Salt and pepper to taste

PREPARE 1. Dice pineapple and tomatoes.

ASSEMBLE Layer a flour or corn tortilla first with the slaw, then the fish and top with the pineapple salsa. Tip: Add a little hot sauce or pepper jack cheese for some additional spice.

2. Chop cilantro, red onion, and jalapeños (deseeded, or use some

of jalapeños seeds to add more heat).

3. Mix all ingredients together.

JCR LAND CO. THINK SPRING & FOOD PLOTS â–?

HELPING WILDLIFE & HUNTERS

Spring is a time of renewal. Grass starts greening up, trees are budding with new leaves, farmers are getting in the fields planting their crops and the days grow longer and warmer. Turkeys, pheasants, waterfowl and songbirds begin their nesting season. Deer are having fawns and bucks are starting to regrow new antlers and hunters begin thinking about planting food plots. Food plots are a very beneficial tool that help hunters find success in the fall. They offer the deer a nutritional food source that will help lactating does produce milk and bucks the necessary nutrients to grow those trophy antlers. Food plots will also help to keep wildlife on your property and offer a food source for those harsh Minnesota winters. They will also add equity into your hunting ground, however, a few things need to be considered. 32

BY MIKE BROWN

1. LOCATION OF THE FOOD PLOTS

Before you begin digging up the ground, consider the location of the food plot. Entrance and exit from your tree stands should be considered. Are you going to bump wildlife off the plot as you are walking to your tree stand in the morning? How about leaving at night? Is it in an area where wildlife will feel comfortable feeding? Aerial photos are a great asset when planning these potential new food plots.

2. SOIL QUALITY AND SAMPLES

Once you have the food plot area defined, next you will need to determine what you will need to get the soil to the point of being able to be turned over. Will you need to remove some trees, brush or grass? What kind of herbicide will you need to get rid of unwanted vegetation?

How about the soil type? Soil samples are an easy way to find what fertilizers you may need to add to get the most out of your food plot as well. Once you have the location determined and the vegetation cleared, take several samples of the soil several inches down in the dirt in the area where the roots will be growing. You can then take the samples to your local agronomy company and have them run the samples for you. This is usually inexpensive and will make sure the plots grow to their potential. Now it’s time to get dirty. There are many options available for hunters to get the soil turned over. Small plots can simply be done with a garden tiller, while bigger plots may need an ATV or tractor and disc.

3. CROP AND PLANT SELECTION

Now that you’ve determined the location of the plot and have the seed bed prepared, what is the best crop to plant? Annual grains such as corn, soybeans and rye grain are a favorite of deer, turkey and pheasants, however they will need to be planted every year. Perennials are another option. Plants such as clover and chicory can be planted in the spring, and if well maintained, can last for several years. Clovers will green up early in the spring, giving the deer herd much needed nutrition after a long winter, whereas corn will provide wildlife with forage needed in the fall and winter. Soybeans are a great option that provide wildlife with a food source throughout the summer, fall and winter months as well. If you’re in an area with high deer numbers, you may need to fence off your soybeans, ensuring that they will have a food source from fall into winter, as the deer will likely graze the soybeans down, hence they will not produce much for soybean pods. Another option that would be planted later in the summer (mid July-mid August), would be brassicas. Deer will utilize the green leaves af-

ter a frost, and later in the winter will dig the frozen bulbs out of the ground.

4. WEED AND GRASS CONTROL

Once the seed is in the ground, keeping a check on the weeds and grasses in the plot is important to ensure a healthy plot that will benefit the wildlife. Roundup Ready corn and soybeans may be available through your local wildlife clubs at a reduced rate. Having access to Roundup Ready seed makes weed and grass control in your plots fairly easy. Clover is a little more difficult, as you will not be able to spray Roundup to control weeds and grasses. Herbicides are available that target grass, and mowing clover 3-4 times throughout the summer will keep weeds down in the plot as well. Hopefully, this will give you some insight on establishing a food plot on your hunting land. Food plots are a great asset that may increase success on your hunting land and will add equity into the property and benefit wildlife as well. *jcrland.com
