Living in Lakes Country is a lifestyle decision. Since 2014 I have lived in the Vergas area myself and I have never been connected more to a place I call home. Whether you enjoy the area on the wknds or year round, Lakes Country is more than just an address. It is living wide open.

Reflecting on the 2017 real estate market we have experienced a growing demand for real property in our area. West Central Minnesota has a long history of family homesteading and for the families calling this area home the beauty is not a secret. Otter Tail County is celebrating its 150 th anniversary this year and I strongly feel that we will continue to experience a new and yet growing desire to live rural. A rural renaissance.

Last year we have seen more young families from the F-M metro area finding lake life for their wknd escape and time to rejuvenate, but also to get away from

the “larger” city permanently. Another growing number of residents are getting ready for a retirement destination and continue to choose Lakes Country. However, it is not only the wknders and retirees who are enjoying Lakes Country, we have met many younger families relocating from Minneapolis and more interestingly coming home after time spent in states further away. It is evident that families decide to call Lakes Country their home to raise children over big metro areas. I have a feeling that this is just the beginning of a new generation of Americans choosing a small town and more grounded life over the busy and maybe unhealthy, bigger city environments.

Overall, the past year showed a high demand in recreational real estate properties with a well-balanced demand of primary residence property ownership. Communities like Perham,

Vergas and New York Mills are growing again and are becoming a desired location for living life to get away from a fast paced society elsewhere. Our area is a great spot to balance work and life by connecting to the outdoors and is one of the greatest assets it bares.

Looking at 2018 and completing the first half of the sales cycle, increasing sales numbers are in support of my conclusion for last year’s sales growth. FIND YOUR TEMPO

Here in Minnesota, we make the most of our 10,000 lakes. We enjoy many traditional water activities and some newer ones. A few lake-top activities we see up and coming are kitesurfing and kiteboarding, hydroflight, and also paddleboard yoga. These activities range from leisurely to extreme, so we have it all in Lakes Country.

Kitesurfing and kiteboarding have some differences that set them apart. While kiteboarding is more about big air jumps and aerial tricks above the water, kitesurfing is actually derived from kiteboarding and focuses more on slicing through waves on a surfboard that, more often than not, your feet aren’t attached to. In both sports, the wind is your ally for propelling you across the water at high speeds. Although there is a technical difference, kiteboarding and kitesurfing are often lumped together in the same category and fun ranking. It all depends on

your skill level and thirst for the extreme element.

Still in need of a thrill? Hydroflight is a fairly new sport only coming to the US in 2013. Originally only an extreme sport that attracted those daring enough to be propelled above the water’s surface at high speeds has now become a leisure activity that can be enjoyed by just about anyone. Using water jet propulsion from a personal watercraft (PWC) creates sustained flight above the water’s surface where lift and movement are controlled by the rider. Different types of hydroflight devices include jetpacks, jetboards and hoverboards–all of which provide the sensation of human flight without wings. Being airborne will instill the urge to push the limits and attempt tricks that would be impossible to do on solid ground. Fun is the best word to describe this activity as you will enjoy making memories alone or with friends and family.

▐ LEISURE OR EXTREME

If serenity is more of what you’re after, try Paddleboard Yoga. Practicing yoga on a paddleboard yields different benefits for the mind, body and soul than what you acquire on a mat. The level of resistance and difficulty is heightened as are your senses. The sensation of floating on the water aids to alleviate the heaviness of the stresses of life. Drifting on top of calm waters encourages your pace to slow and your focus rests on your technique, form and quality of breath. The advantages of being surrounded by nature enables you to realize your union with the environment, humanity and the universe. A change of scenery is both liberating and a major motivator of this workout. And don’t sweat it if you fall in, everyone does! This is another beneficial portion of the routine. The example of pulling yourself back onto your board can be mirrored to the life lesson of getting back up if life knocks

you down. Whether you are a beginner or advanced yogi, paddleboard yoga is an experience you will want more of.

Having so many lakes has inspired Minnesotans to embrace these waters and expand their interactions with nature. There is always something going on at the lake. We love lake life.

RESTORING DETROIT LAKE

Justin Scallon’s 125-foot stretch of lakefront interrupts a band of rock riprap that cinches most of Detroit Lake’s shore. Its bright-green oats cover crop, tall spikes of sedges and flowering black-eyed Susans stand out from neighbors’ beigeand-gray rock landscaping.

Like the riprap, Scallon’s shoreline restoration will stabilize the bank. But his restoration also will cut the amount of phosphorus that enters Detroit Lake, reduce runoff, and provide fish and wildlife habitat. When the native wildflower seeding reaches maturity in about three years, it will bloom purple, yellow and white.

“When the Becker Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) had this program come out and they showed me the graphics and the layouts for what they could do, I just fell in love with it immediately,” Scallon said. “With rocks, you don’t get colors. You get colors with all the plants that’ll start blooming.”

COSTS

Scallon’s restoration is part of a Becker Soil & Water Conservation District initiative that gives lakeshore property owners a chance to help rescue recreational waters from the brink of impairment.

A $254,900 Clean Water Fund grant covers 75 percent of landowners’ costs. Projects might include native plant restorations, rain gardens or gutters –all designed to clean up the lake. The initiative targets 12 phosphorus-sensitive lakes where water quality is in peril or high quality and in need of protection.

Detroit Lake – the centerpiece of Detroit Lakes’ tourism in a county with 500 lakes and 300,000 annual visitors – is at risk because of elevated phosphorus levels. It connects to Curfman Pond, Lake Sallie and Lake Melissa.

the biggest contributor of upstream water,” said Peter Mead, Becker SWCD Administrator.

One landowner can’t single-handedly reverse decades of lawn-fertilizer applications and paved-surface runoff. But one landowner can spread the word about the Becker SWCD initiative.

They (lakeshore property owners) like to have a big sand beach. And it’s not necessarily what’s supposed to be here. We’re here to treat resource concerns. But really what we do is we change human behavior.

A Fargo-based homebuilder, Scallon, 36, was drawn to the town where he had vacationed as a child. Detroit Lakes. Now he visits with his wife and three children, ages 2, 5 and 7.

Scallon bought the vacation property with 50 feet of shoreline on Detroit Lake in 2012, and then purchased the adjoining property as a rental unit in May 2017. Both lawns extended downhill to a wavecarved drop-off.

Once he saw the first restoration taking shape, Scallon signed on for the second. One of Scallon’s neighbors saw his shoreline and decided to pursue a restoration next year.

If pre-settlement were the gauge, restoring Detroit Lake’s shoreline would mean restoring the forest – a rich riparian zone supporting fish and wildlife, and filtering pollutants. Native forbs, sedges and grasses are a compromise.

Landowners who sign on to the SWCD program have a say in the plant mix, and get a pretty good idea how a mature planting will look. Armed with mapping tools and a database of options and

related costs, SWCD staff provide quick assessments and customized plans.

Scallon estimated his 25 percent costshare would total $4,800.

During an August visit to Scallon’s property, Gabe Dretsch, Becker SWCD shoreland technician, checked the native grasses and sedges planted in coconutfiber mats, held in place with hemp rope and wooden stakes. He suggested a bit more water. Eventually, talk turned to rain gardens, gutters and other possible improvements.

Scallon’s view of Detroit Lake will remain unobscured; the tallest plants grow at the bottom of the bank. He’ll still be able to access his boats.

“We try to strike a balance between how they want to use their property and the conservation goals that we have. They may not want 100 feet of native vegetation in a tiny little 2-foot-wide path down to their lake. So, you have to play a little bit of give-and-take or maybe work a little bit harder to sell certain aspects of why you would use a certain type of vegetation,” Mead said.

“We try to keep it so they have an area for recreation. That’s important to them and us that they have that, because that’s what they come to the lake for. We try to work with them as much as we can,” Mead said SWCD staff follows up with detailed maintenance and cost-share requirements. Landowners agree to keep lakeshore restorations in place and kept up for 10 years.

“This isn’t just us coming in and beautifying your yard and walking away,” Dretsch said.

GRILLIN’ SEASON

There is nothing better than sitting outside by the lake on a beautiful summer’s day, with the smell of food cooking on the grill and good friends and family near. Many people are hesitant to put fresh caught fish on the grill due to its small flakes. Our technique here keeps the grilled fish all together and meld flavors.

PREPARE 1. Dice potatoes and broccoli

Cut red onion into 1 inch pieces

Cut cherry tomatoes in half

Combine olive oil, seasoning, and garlic and set aside

Create 5 foil packets using your fist and fill each with equal portions of each vegetable 6. Drizzle equal amounts of the olive oil mixture over vegetables in each packet 7. Seal top of foil pouch and place on medium heat grill for 10-15 minutes 8. Remove from grill and top with fresh cracked pepper, sea salt and cheese

GARLIC & HERB FISH

INGREDIENTS

1 0-16 fish fillets of your choice fish– we used fresh Walleye and Crappie from our local lakes!

8 ounces of cherry tomatoes 2-3 tablespoons olive oil

1 tablespoon white wine vinegar (optional)

2 cloves garlic, minced salt and pepper aluminum foil

PREPARE

1. Combine olive oil, white wine vinegar, and garlic and set aside

2. Slice cherry tomatoes in half and set aside

3. Prepare 5-8 pieces of foil, fold each piece of foil in half

4. On right half of foil, place 2 fillets of fish. Continue for all pieces of foil.

5. Spread olive oil mixture over each fish fillet

6. Top fish with 2-3 tomatoes

7. Crack fresh pepper and sea salt over each fillet

8. Seal foil packets air tight and place on grill for 10 minutes. You will see juice from the fish boiling through the creases when done

9. Remove fish from foil and serve with fresh basil *optional to drizzle a balsamic vinaigrette over fish

STRAWBERRY RHUBARB LEMON-LIMEADE

INGREDIENTS

3 cups water, divided

1 ½ - 2 cups rhubarb, chopped

1/12 cups strawberries, halved, tops removed

1 ½ cups sugar

1 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice (5-6 lemons) Juice of two limes, squeezed

PREPARE

1. In a medium pot add 2 cups water, rhubarb, strawberries and sugar. Heat over medium high heat, stirring often until the mixture starts to boil. Boil for 8 minutes. Remove from the heat and roughly crush the berries and rhubarb with a potato masher or the back of a wooden spoon.

2. Let the mixture sit for 10-15 minutes.

3. Strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer. Use the back of a spoon to firmly press the solids against the strainer to get as much liquid out of them as you can, then refrigerate the liquid until cool. (Don’t discard the solids! Spread on toast for breakfast or puree smooth to use for other recipes!)

4. When you are ready to serve add the cold strawberry rhubarb liquid and cold lemon-lime juice to a large pitcher and stir together. Add some ice and 1 cup water and stir again. Serve.

5. Garnish with lemon & lime slices and/or sliced strawberries if you’d like. Enjoy! (Notes: Add ½ cup more sugar during boiling process for sweeter lemonade or omit 1 lime to reduce tartness.)

In the next few weeks, bucks will be showing noticeable antler growth, and it is a great time to start surveying via trial cam, what deer are utilizing your property.

If you have hunted a property for a num ber of years, you probably have a good idea of how the deer travel the landscape.

If you have a new hunting property, I like using aerial maps or photos of the property for studying different habitats and trying to figure out how deer are moving on the property. Bedding area, travel corridors and food sources, along with topography and cover, influence a how a deer travels. Once you have an idea of how the deer are traveling, the next step is to walk the property and follow the deer sign. Summer is a great time to get out in the woods, once the snow melts, and follow the deer sign. Rubs, scrapes, and trails will be apparent and can be a great indicator of how deer are

traveling your property. Once these puz zle pieces are put together, find a location for a mineral attractant. There are many different products at any sporting goods store. I have tried many different types of minerals, but found that the deer on my property prefer one particular brand, so I tend to stick with that. One site per hundred acres of land is sufficient. I place the mineral out in a cleared area free of vegetation that can cause unwanted pictures of grass or leaves blowing in the wind. Leave the site for 10-14 days to

allow ample time for the deer to find and start using the site. You will see after this period, deer activity will increase on your camera. Freshen up the mineral attractant, and let the site remain untouched for 2 weeks.

After this period, check your cards and count the number of buck, doe and fawn pictures. This will give you an estimate of your buck/doe ratio and doe/fawn ratio. If you’re lucky, maybe the picture of that trophy buck will be on your camera as well and give you something to look forward to come hunting season.

If not, don’t be discouraged. Bachelor groups of bucks will start to disperse in early September and may utilize different habitats than they did all summer. Fresh rubs and scrapes will start showing up and it will be time to move the cameras from the minerals and onto the scrape and rub lines. You just never know what will show up on your trail cams during this period going into the fall.
