DAY TRIP story by Connye Griffin | photos by Al Griffin

The past lives large in Fulton

Above: America’s National Churchill Museum. At right: A classic restaurant still operating in Fulton is Bek’s where Westminster students, faculty, and visitors make memories.

S

ome people loom large in imagination. One such person, nicknamed The Roaring Lion, is Sir Winston Churchill who, as Prime Minister, became an architect for Europe’s victory against Nazi Germany. Churchill cultivated a partnership with U. S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Some say these two world leaders saved the future. Recent History

As Armistice Day, early in November nears, a trip to Fulton, Missouri may be in order. There in the 1930s, Westminster College initiated a lecture series. The seventh lecturer was Churchill in 1946. His post-World War II lecture titled “The Iron Curtain Speech” infused global policies and inspired a local private college to undertake a global mission. Westminster and its trustees salvaged a bombed-out 17th century church designed by Christopher Wren. Set for destruction after air raids over London, the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Aldermanbury, was saved and shipped stone by stone to Fulton where it houses America’s National Churchill Museum. Inside visitors will learn much about the long loving marriage between Churchill and his wife, Churchill’s talent as an artist and writer, his skills and tenacity as Prime Minister, and his vision for a partnership between the U. S. and the U. K. 10 VACATION NEWS

DAY TRIP Auto History

Another feature of the 20th century looming large in imaginations is the automobile, and Fulton provides a quick trip back in time at the Auto World Museum. A local businessman, William E. Backer, recognized the link between the auto and our lives. He collected representative autos from a doctor’s buggy and an 1896 Ford to modern classics manufactured in the 1970s and 1980s. The museum is open for group tours by appointment and regular tours Friday through Sunday from May 1 to December 31. A special Fall event at the museum takes place September 10 and 11. It is the Fall Willy’s Jeep Reunion, an annual event since 1995. If They Build, People Will Come

Graduates and administrators at Westminster imagined a future for a bombed-out church and a man’s legacy. A local man, William E. Backer, had a different vision for the future. It was one starring autos. So in Fulton, they built museums. People definitely came to see and learn. They still do.

FISHING BrandPoint

10 expert fishing tips

Y

ou can smell it in the air. A warm, fresh breath of spring. And to you and millions like you, that can mean only one thing ... fishing! Here are 10 tips from the fishing enthusiasts at Rapala, the world’s best-selling fishing lure for the past 50 years, on what you can do now to be ready to hit the water and start catching. 1) Declutter the tackle box - If you’ve been fishing awhile, no doubt your tackle box might be feeling a bit cluttered. On those cold, nasty days, bring the tackle box inside to the warmth of your home and pluck out the stuff that doesn’t work and focus on what does. Taking the time to organize your gear will help you spend more time fishing and less time messing with your stuff. 2) Put on fresh line - What comes between you and a trophy fish? Your fishing line, of course. Don’t tempt fate. The experts at Sufix fishing line recommend changing out fishing line at least once a year. As you take off old line, look for frays and nicks - this may be a sign that one or more of the guides on your fishing rod is cracked or even missing. 12 VACATION NEWS

Lake Media photo 3) Smooth fishing rod guides - Use a cotton swab and run it around the inside of each guide of your fishing rod. This will help you see if you have any cracks or breaks in your guides, which could cut your fishing line - when you have a fish on the line. 4) Watch fishing videos - Getting outside and spending time on the water is what fishing is all about. However, watching how-to videos on the Rapala YouTube Channel, which features more than 600 videos, can help you catch more fish year-round, on open water, in saltwater and on hardwater (ice fishing). 5) Sharp hooks equal more bites - What’s the first point of contact with a fish? It’s the point of your fishing hook. Sharp hooks mean you’ll catch more fish; dull hooks mean you’ll be one frustrated angler. So take some time to replace hooks on your go-to lures. It’s also important to select the right hook, say the hook gurus at VMC, one of the world’s largest fishing hook manufacturers. The mouths of fish vary from species to species, so make sure to select a hook that meets the challenge. May 6 - 19, 2022

FISHING 6) Go with your confidence bait - Nearly every angler has their go-to lure. It’s that one lure that seems to catch fish when all others fail. When you find your confidence bait, stock up on it. Have a few more of that lure tucked away in your tackle box for when you might need them even more. Don’t have a confidence bait yet? Well, you can’t go wrong with the lure that’s caught more world records than any other lure. 7) Experiment more - You wouldn’t play an 18-hole golf course with just a putter. Different lures are made to catch fish under different conditions. For example, Rapala offers freshwater lures, saltwater lures and ice fishing lures. It offers lures that can reach fish in any depth, from deep down to the surface. This year, treat yourself to a lure you’ve never tried before to learn from it and expand your ability to catch fish anytime, anywhere, under any condition. Or, try a lure, such as an ice fishing lure, for deep water bass and walleye in open water - sounds crazy, but it works. 8) Play fantasy fishing - That’s right. Playing Rapala Bassmaster Fantasy Fishing gives you an opportunity to win some incredible prizes. At the same time, it allows you to track the world’s best bass fishing pros and watch how they manage to catch fish even in the most difficult conditions. Understanding what they do can improve your real-world, on-the-water fishing. 9) Try someplace new - Anglers can be creatures of habit. We like to go to our favorite lake and often go to

our favorite fishing hole time and time again. While you might be catching fish, you also may be limiting yourself. This year, try someplace new. Go to a new water. Try BrandPoint photo a different way of fishing, such as using a kayak. Go for a different species and see if your knowledge in bass fishing applies to a species such as walleye, muskies or redfish. 10) Introduce someone new to fishing - Spending time on the water, enjoying all that nature has to offer and catching fish is awesome, but there’s something even better hooking someone new, especially a young person, on the joy of fishing. Take some time this year to intentionally teach someone about how to fish, or how to fish for a different species. It just may be your biggest catch of all.

BOOK NOOK

‘Slade’ released by local author

T

the latest novel from fiction author, editor and journalist Robb Grindstaff, “Slade,” is available through online retailers and on store shelves. This is the third novel from Grindstaff, a local Osage Beach resident. Grindstaff says he’s a southern boy born and raised, family originally from Missouri, but his career in the newspaper business took him all over the world, including seven years in Washington, DC, and five years in Tokyo, Japan. He lived in Wisconsin for nine years, where he managed a community newspaper group of 11 publications. He and his wife relocated to Osage Beach last year. In “Slade,” the main character writes a self-help book and becomes an unlikely celebrity and spiritual guru to the Hollywood elite, spawning a cult he wants nothing to do with. The unconventional storytelling technique, dark humor, cultural satire, and cast of quirky characters will appeal to readers who enjoy Chuck Palahniuk and John Irving. Grindstaff’s previous novels include “Carry Me Away” and “Hannah’s Voice,” both award-winning and critically acclaimed books. He also is a highly sought-after fiction editor and writing instructor. His publisher released a collection of Grindstaff’s awardwinning short stories on May 16, titled “June Bug Gothic.” You can learn more about Grindstaff and his books at robbgrindstaff.com, or through the publisher’s website, Evolved Publishing (evolvedpub.com). For additional information, a review copy or to schedule an interview, contact Robb Grindstaff at robb@robbgrindstaff. com, (920) 723-8464.

About the book Slade Bennington is an unlikely cult hero. Severely injured in a car crash 29 years earlier that left him with a new outlook on life, his life story becomes a best-selling book, which is turned into a box office hit film. His pithy musings about life spur a nationwide following of fans who study his writings like holy scriptures. Slade becomes a spiritual guru to the celebrity in-crowd – the Shaman to the Stars. While thousands adore Slade, others call him a Svengali or Rasputin-like character who controls and manipulates his clients. And someone lurks in the shadows, seeking revenge. “Slade” is an offbeat literary/satire novel that unfolds in a series of interviews with the main character and those who know him best, plus snippets from Slade’s books and news reports. The unconventional structure, dark humor, and cast of quirky characters will appeal to readers of Chuck Palahniuk and John Irving.

18 VACATION NEWS

About Robb Grindstaff In addition to a career as a journalist and publishing executive in the newspaper and media business, Grindstaff has two contemporary southern lit novels with Evolved Publishing (“Hannah’s Voice” and “Carry Me Away”). His fourth novel, “Turning Trixie,” is scheduled for release in 2022. Grindstaff has had a dozen short stories published, including the award-winning “Desert Rain,” his only attempt at horror so far. His collection of short stories, “June Bug Gothic,” is also scheduled for release in May 2022. Grindstaff is a highly sought-after freelance fiction editor with clients who include New York Times and USA Today best-selling authors and writers from around the world. He has taught fiction writing courses for Romance Writers of America (even though he’s not a romance writer), Romance Writers of Australia (even though he’s not Australian), and Red Oak Writing of Milwaukee. Grindstaff and his wife live in the Lake of the Ozarks region in Missouri, where he writes and edits fiction full time.

The emerging west side of the Lake

K

eeping it close to home once again with gas prices still near $3.80, explore little-known places around our Lake area. A trip to Stover from Osage Beach can take about 90 minutes, depending on the route. It’s an often-neglected side of Lake of the Ozarks when one thinks of tourism. But that is changing. Ozarks International Raceway ran inaugural races in April. It’s the first stop on the Highway 135 corridor. Ozarks International Raceway was built by PF Racing of Kansas City and brings high speed racing of not only their fleet of Ford Mustang Modified cars in bright pink, but also exotics and antiques on the paved course. With tickets of only $10, it’s an affordable, family friendly venue on Highway 135. Food & Drink

Five miles past the Ozarks International Raceway lies Ivy Bend Road, which takes Day Trippers down to lakeside relaxation. Patriot’s Point Marina has a beautiful view of the 60 mm and offers refreshment and opportunity to take in the peaceful waters and watch families cruise in for drinks. Patriot’s Point Marina is housed in the former Rebel Docks complex. A city-style market popped up in the new marina, with Kansas City-brand Scimeca meats and foods, and other specialty Missouri products. One can find all the meats and seasoning they could want to grill out. Slushie machines provide cool drinks on tap, and a shot of your favorite spirit can be added. Sit out on the handmade lawn where giant Connect Four games and cornhole are installed on a football Food from Patio 52 Bar and Grill. field-style lawn. Patriot Point Marina is located at 34501 Rebel Road, Ivy Bend, or the 60 MM by water. For a complete meal on the go, visit Shady’s Shack in Ivy Bend. Some weekends the food truck is on the road to a festival. The rest of the time it’s parked in its home base down Ivy Bend Road. They offer an eclectic Mexican menu of fresh tostadas, burritos, and, if you’re lucky, freshly made tamales. Breakfast is available Saturdays and Sundays from 8 to 11a.m. Build your own breakfast burrito before jumping back in the car for the next destination, or eat biscuits and gravy, donuts, or their specialty “Shipwreck” of potatoes and meat and veggies topped with gravy at their nearby picnic tables. Churros and ice cream round out their menu. Shady’s Shack can be found at 33971 Ivy Bend Road, or the 59.5 MM by water.

FEATURE Visit a Winery

Traveling back up to Highway 135, head the car north to Timber Ridge Winery. A winding trip on the tree-lined, two-lane highway turns right to a gravel road into the woods eight miles away at Whispering Timbers Road to Fern Ridge Lane. A gorgeous log cabin building is revealed after driving the dirt road. The vaulted winery building welcomes guests with wrap-around porches and a multitude of outdoor seating. Enter the winery to Photos provided find a cozy wooden and metal venue where the owners serve up their Timber Ridge Wine produced from your favorite Missouri grapes, and also a few local surprises. When visiting last summer, the Monroe family had just brought in a local harvest of elderberries and were prepping them for the press. They also purchase local blackberries for a house favorite vintage. Customers rave about the Georgia Peach, but being a grape purist, opting for the Vignoles is the first glass choice. Timber Ridge Winery hosts live local artists on Friday or Saturday nights, sometimes both. Food is available on the weekends, whether it is their handy cheese and sausage trays, or a specialty barbecue meal. Timber Ridge Winery is available for private events, weddings, or a venue for local events. They often host paint and sip or sip and shop evenings and craft nights. Timber Ridge Winery is open from Friday through Sunday afternoons at 5900 Fern Ridge Lane, Stover. Ozark Wylde Farm

Next down the road lies a seasonal business, but nonetheless interesting. Ozark Wylde Farm is a lavender farm primarily, but also produces flowers and herbs for tea. Owner Amy Wilson grows about anything she can get her farm to offer up, including tapping maple and walnut trees at winter sap production. Ozark Wylde Farm hosts visitors in her small “she-shed” store, but at harvest time, offers an open house style tour of the farm. It’s only 2.7 miles from Timber Ridge Winery at 4962 Warren Road, Stover. Hidden Gems

While still touring Hwy 135 South, a few conservation areas bear investigating, giving some unexplored accesses to Lake of the Ozarks. These hidden conservation areas hold mystery and a different, backwater-type experience into the wooded Lake’s northside hills. The Wigwam School access provides a low water inlet 24 VACATION NEWS

into the Lake of the Ozarks, deep down in the wooded lands near Stover. The 78 acres of Wigwam School Access can be found by boat at the 66.2 MM on the Osage Arm or from Ivy Bend to Webb Road. A cement boat ramp sits in the bottom of a nearby hollow. The surrounding woods allow for turkey and deer hunting when in season. The Big Buffalo Creek CA outside of Stover hosts events by the Missouri Department of Conservation. On May 12, the MDC will hold Spring Warbler Day, with guests meeting at the campsite at 7:15 a.m. Don’t fret, The Ranch House Coffee Shop in Stover has you covered that early with some nice strong, cowboy brew. The meet-up will be split into three levels of hikers, with novices staying at the campground to bird watch. Big Buffalo Creek CA is located at 23841 Big Buffalo Road, Stover. Eat Early

You will end in Stover with an array of local favorites to choose from for dining, but don’t wait too late in the day. Most close early in this cozy endcap town of the Lake of the Ozarks. First choice is Patio 52 Bar and Grill for dinner. The minimalist modern style restaurant incorporates not only some fantastic barbecue, but one of the best steaks in town. The open air of the installed front garage doors overlooking the sometimes-busy tourist traffic of Highway 52 gives a kicked back place to enjoy on the patio. Beef is king in Stover; you really can’t go wrong anywhere you order it. The locally produced meat is well known in most dining establishments of Stover and Cole Camp. Grab Some Ice Cream

Finish off your day in downtown Stover at Skelly’s Ice Cream Shoppe. A vision came to life by a local real estate agent when she purchased the vintage property and brought it back as a treat shop. Serving Central Dairy Ice Cream, Skelly’s is special because of their array of creations available. The Coffee Pot Specialty Milk Shake contains fresh cookies, syrups, and coffee ice cream. There is an ultimate 6 scoop sundae on the blackboard menu. If you haven’t already filled up at any of the dinner choices in town, Skelly’s also offers jumbo hotdogs, one of which weighs in heavy with every topping available piled on top. Car cruises are coming for this year at the 1940s renovated former Skelly’s gas station in downtown Stover. Skelly’s Ice Cream Shoppe in Downtown Stover is located at 401 W. 2nd Street. Comfort foods with a twist

I

n his grandmother’s humble home, John Buchanan learned the hearty flavors of food made from scratch using fresh, homegrown ingredients. One of his favorite desserts from those days is on the menu at The Tavern at Trails End. It is Grandma Wilma’s Fried Pie, fruit-filled and served à la mode. Another dessert, Gooey Butter Cake, hails from St. Louis where both John and Sherri Buchanan learned and worked every job in the restaurant industry before becoming owners here at the Lake. John began at age 14 with a catering company. At 19, he labored in a kitchen under a “European certified executive chef.” Through these years and beyond, John acquired knowledge and experience to become part of the American Culinary Federation St. Louis de Cuisine in kitchens small and large. One of those restaurants brought John and Sherri together. She had worked as a bartender, cashier, bookkeeper, and manager. Together, the Buchanans decided to take full “creative control” here on the westside at Lake of the Ozarks. They searched for the right property and became owners of an old log cabin — one that may be inhabited by ghosts from years past. A previous owner closed and locked up, but after closing the Chef door, she heard music. When she re-entered, she saw couples dancing and on floors that were empty just moments before. The Buchanans have not owner John been startled by the sudden appearance of dancers, but motion-activated hand Buchanan towel dispensers have spit out paper when no one was near and staff has reported doors opening and closing without human hand. These phenomena do not trouble John Buchanan. He feels a kinship with the old building. It is a good location for classy comfort foods. One of those is the Tavern Loaf, created by Chef John and executed by the Lake’s Bread Bowl. Guaranteed to satisfy all tastes, the loaf consists of four separate doughs — wheat, white, sourdough, and rye — side by side. It represents Chef John’s goal: comfort foods made special, more memorable, and tastier with his own twist. Anyone who has worked in and around restaurants knows the hours and weeks are long, but the work doesn’t trouble John either. He says food is his “passion and God-given talent….The hours are not long when you enjoy

RESTAURANT PROFILE what you are doing.” Sherri agrees. The two also enjoy the westside’s welcoming restaurant-resort community, including The Branding Iron’s owners who treated all their staff to a pre-Christmas party at the Tavern at Trails End in 2021. As the Tavern is a thriving business, the Buchanans recommend reservations to insure a table, especially if more than two will be dining together. However, the oldest section of the building, now dubbed the Tavern Parlor, is fine for pre- and even postdining camaraderie. There, guests can order a Bourbon Berry Smash at the front bar, admire the original Ozark stone fireplace, and sit at hightops for Tavern Fare such as cheeseburger sliders with bourbon bacon jam, Street Tacos, or desserts. In the dining room, the menu is more extensive and the entrées more elaborate. The Cowboy Ribeye is one of the most popular menu items. It is 16 ounces of bone-in steak, grilled and dressed with a homemade barbecue sauce under hand-cut, homemade fried onions. Another fine dining entrée is the Grilled Salmon glazed with bourbon honey and served with wild rice pilaf plus a seasonal vegetable. Two hand-held choices are a Brisket Grilled Cheese on sourdough filled with house-made white cheddar pimento cheese. The second sandwich with the Tavern’s unique twist is Not Your May 6 - 19, 2022

A log cabin nearly a centuryold reinvigorated as The Tavern at Trails End. The Tavern Loaf made up of a slice of wheat, white, rye, and sourdough.

Everyday Grilled Cheese, made with the same house-made white cheddar pimento cheese plus American cheese, gruyère, roasted tomatoes, and bourbon bacon jam. Both hand-helds come with pub fries. All menu items represent the special twists and extra care the Buchanans put into every aspect of the restaurant. Their love for food and for building community is paying off. People have found the Tavern at Trails End, they’re telling their friends, and they’re returning for special occasions as well as workday lunches and dinners.

John’s goal is to prepare such delicious foods that diners will want to try every item on the menu—from soup to salad, hand-helds, entrées, and desserts. His grandmother would surely be proud. About the restaurant

BOATING by Marie Krolikowski

A safe and care-free boating season

Y

ou’ve been waiting months for this, counting down the days before it becomes a reality. Today is the day you walk down to your dock, uncover it, turn the key and once again feel the wind in your hair. Today is the day you bring your boat out of hibernation. Although the anticipation is too much to take, there is still much to do before you can officially call it boating season. Take A Look Around

When you step onto your dock, take a few minutes to inspect the winter impact. Bryan Vance, supervisor of Shoreline Management at Ameren Missouri, noted that a visual inspection after the long winter can save you issues down the road. “The first thing you want to do is undo everything that prepared the dock for the winter draw down of the Lake,” Vance said. “This includes adjusting the cables to where they should be for the season. Make a visual inspection of your dock, and take note of anything that broke over the winter.” Vance suggested taking special notice of the electrical system, just to make sure there are no broken conduits, loose wires or damaged fixtures. Look at your flotation to assure there’s no ice damage, and check for damage to the structural frame of your dock that can result from movement. Foundation issues, Vance stated, can be common for docks in shallow water that sit on the ground all winter. Lastly, check the roof to make sure there’s no wind damage to the roofing material. 38 VACATION NEWS

“Once you’ve done a visual inspection, it’s recommended that you have a professional who services dock electrical wiring conduct an inspection,” he said. Jon Bussey owner of Catalyst Electric in Linn Creek, also recommends an electrical inspection. “Homeowners should call an electrician (us) for a free dock inspection to check for wear and tear of their electrical system,” he explained. “An inspection would include checking the GFCI function of the circuitry of the dock, checking for winter damage to the conduit, lights and other devices, performing a ground loop test to ensure the wiring from the house is in good order, and more.” Bussey added that owners need to be certain the entire dock is protected, which includes the power from the house to the shore as well as the house panel, and service on the outside of the house as well. These are all connected, he explained, and an issue in one of these parts could cause an issue on the dock as well. “Talking with neighbors and having the cove checked out by a professional is a good way to stay ahead of potential issues,” he said. The most common issues, Bussey said, are bad GFCI breakers for the dock, damage to conduit due to Lake levels varying so much from winter to spring, life motors causing breakers to trip, and water getting into light fixtures that were installed incorrectly. BOATING Boating Checklist

Your boat lift has served its purpose all winter, keeping your investment dry and out of the water. But the harsh winter can take its toll on this valuable purchase. Megan Baldridge from Econo-Lift Boat Hoist in Camdenton explained most of the tasks related to the lift come prior to winter. Spring maintenance inspections, however, are crucial to a long, productive boating season. “You do need to check your electric in and around the dock,” Baldridge said. “Always raise your lift when you leave; it’s hard on lifts to leave them down in the water for long periods of time. They make remote controls for lifts and they are extremely helpful in these situations.” Lift owners should call as soon as they sense something is wrong, she said. It’s now time for the unveiling, and hopefully no surprises are found inside the boat. Scott Michel operates Pointe Oasis Resort & Marina in Sunrise Beach and offers cleaning and detailing services. He explained that it’s not uncommon to find a raccoon or a bird left a mess in your boat while escaping the winter weather. “It’s important to give your boat a good look over,” Michel said. “Make sure no creatures got inside. They can leave a tremendous mess. There shouldn’t be any mold issues, but there may be leaves or debris.” Michel does have spring cleaning tips which you can do on your own, or you hire his services for a completely detailed job. “Cleaning inside and out is important and protects against the sun and the UV rays,” Scott explained. “I think it’s a mandatory thing at least once a year.” A complete detailed cleaning includes the removal of water spots and washing and waxing the boat with a hybrid ceramic product. The inside of the boat is thoroughly cleaned and a protective product is applied to the seats which cleans and protects. In addition, the cover is also cleaned and all work is done at your own dock. Detailing service is available for docks within a 10-mile radius of the business. His recommendation, however, is to wait until the pollen is done falling before putting the time or money into the cleaning. Typically, he said, this would mean one to two weeks before Memorial Day weekend.

Safety First

The time has come to finally turn the key and head out on the water, but not so fast. According to Doug Beck, cochair of Lake of the Ozarks Water Safety Council, “spring is the ideal time to give your boat a bow-to-stern go-over and set yourself up for carefree boating all summer long.” Beck explained that the major systems that need dewinterizing include engines, plumbing systems, and batteries and electrical systems. The exact process differs depending on the type of engine, the manufacturer and the model. The owner’s manual or the business that winterized your boat can give you specific information on how to dewinterize.

Boats with freshwater systems, he said, have been treated with RV antifreeze in the fall. It’s important to flush the hoses and lines thoroughly with fresh water to ensure all the antifreeze has been washed away. Attention to the battery and electrical systems include making sure the battery is in its place, hooked up properly and fully charged. Beck explained the number-one problem boaters encounter is a low or dead battery. “Even if your batteries stayed aboard, don’t neglect to hook up a charger before you try to head out,” he said. A “shake-down” cruise, he said, will help discover if any issues have risen over the winter. This initial cruise is the opportunity to become aware of any unexpected surprises that could put a damper on the boating days ahead. Get Ready To Entertain

Now that all the spring inspections and cleaning is done, it’s time to just sit and relax. You’ve made your dock your outside living space, and you don’t want to wait until the party to find out if your stereo equipment is going to work. Randy Sparks, president of 21st Century Electronix in Osage Beach, noted that if electrical items were covered and stored properly, there shouldn’t be any issues in the spring. But if you’re looking to improve what you already have, you better start now. “People don’t put the right equipment outdoors and as a result it doesn’t last,” Sparks said. “Everything we install is outdoor rated.” First and foremost, high-speed internet and WiFi is the basis for any dock. Outdoor rated equipment, he said, can be hot-wired or done wireless. From there, the list of possibilities include quality sound systems, televisions, security cameras and more. Remote controls, he added, can even make it possible to operate your dock lighting from your house. Another thing you’ll want to take care of so that you are comfortable hanging out on your dock is pest control. Apparently, the spiders invading your dock didn’t get the message. While there are several home-made methods out there that claim to keep the pests away, Bert and Lisa Westbrook have some proven methods. As owners of AB Pest Control & Insulation Services in Lake Ozark, they’ve seen their share of concerns. A pesticide service is highly regulated on where and what can be treated. “We don’t typically treat personal items with a pesticide that can come in contact with people. For instance, furniture, inside of dock lockers, life jackets, and so on,” they explained. Keeping lights off when not in use will help keep the spider population down, as lights attract the midges that spiders eat. This is why spider webs are most prominent around the lights. Essential oils do help treat more areas and is not currently regulated. When treating docks for pest issues, AB Pest Control does not treat the boat unless specifically requested. In a nutshell, these steps and inspections can make for a care-free season on the Lake. Happy boating to all!

MUSIC

story by Charis Patires

The healing power of music

S

ince starting up the Healing Box Project nine years ago, organizers Dave and CJ Dunklee have been providing guitars to disabled veterans and saving lives in the process. So far more than 190 guitars have been given to veterans who use the gift of music to ease the pain and stress felt from their time in the service. Dave, who performs regularly around the Lake area, started The Healing Box Project in 2013 along with his wife, CJ. A retired music teacher, Dave began visiting Fort Leonard Wood once a week to give guitar lessons to wounded warriors and equipping them with a guitar for free. They called the program The Healing Box Project after the old folk guitars made from wooden boxes modified with a pole neck and strings. The program took off and more and more veterans wanted to participate. At one point they were providing lessons at the VA in Columbia, but due to federal restrictions on COVID the program there is on hold. Today, lessons are held at the Disabled American Veterans in Jefferson City every other week, and at the Osage Beach Elks Lodge every week. Anywhere from a handful of veterans to 30 attend the classes. To fund the program, Dave sets out a box to collect donations at each of his performances. Thanks to those people who have donated, The Healing Box Project has provided the gift of music to ease the pain for veterans who often suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome and need a positive outlet to begin the healing process. “Veterans have given so much to protect our freedom,” Dave said. “They are heroes that need some help, and music is a way to make them feel better. When they strum the guitar and they get that feeling of being better, it stays with them after they put the guitar down.” The Healing Box Project fundraiser is held every year on the first Sunday in June. The 9th annual fundraiser will be from 12-6 p.m. on June 5 this year. Dunklee will entertain, several tables of silent auction items will be displayed with a buy-it-now option, and at 1 p.m. veterans will take the stage to perform. The Healing Box Project is a 501c3 non-profit. Monetary donations allow them to purchase name-brand acoustic guitars which are gifted to veterans. Dave says sometimes they hear stories from veterans about how The Healing Box Project has changed their lives. On one occasion, a veteran called Dave to say that he was having suicidal thoughts but decided to pick up his guitar and “made it through the night” thanks to being able to play. “You never can tell what the benefits can be beyond the lesson,” Dave said. Attend the fundraiser!

June 5, 12-6 p.m. at the Fish & Co. (268 Wego Fish Lane, Camdenton) To donate to the fundraiser, call CJ at 573-372-1234. www.thehealingboxproject.org Facebook page: Veteran Program - The Healing Box Project

O

rganizers of the Lake Ozark Music Festival, the most anticipated music event in Lake Ozark, have opened ticket sales for the three-day event Oct. 6-8 at Lake Ozark Speedway near Eldon. Hours will be 10 a.m.-2 a.m. Each of the days. More than 30 artists on five stages will deliver the first-of-its-kind all-inclusive experience for all. The event will feature the likes of Blane Howard, Raelyn Nelson Band, Whey Jennings, Sean Lee Stamps, Dukes of Country, and several other artists and bands. Inspired by Ozark, one of the hottest TV series, the Lake Ozark Music Festival is packed with everything that makes a party memorable. Other activities include tented honky-tonks, pedal trolleys, roaming party tractor, and an onsite party bus. There will also be axe throwing, mechanical bulls, air shows, beer gardens, ferris wheels, stunt shows, as well as Nashville guitar and country wear vendors. The COVID-19 pandemic led to restrictions on gatherings and public events in line with safety protocol to avoid the spread of the virus. Consequently, lovers of adventure and outdoor activities found it difficult to have fun as the lockdowns gave no chance for such gatherings. However, things are beginning to take a new look, thanks to increased vaccination and the significant reduction in the rate of infection and fatality. The goal of the Lake Ozark Music Festival is to let freedom reign. Consequently, attendees are not required to provide proof of vaccination or wear a face covering. For further information, visit www.lakeozarkmusicfestival.com and Facebook.
