n 2021, Condé Nast Traveler declared Ha Ha Tonka State Park to be Missouri’s best state park because of its “caves, cerulean blue sinkholes, and a large natural bridge.” Right here at home, visitors know the park’s features also include a deep, fish-rich, no-wake cove known as Spring Cove. The spring feeding the cove is the state’s 12th largest, releasing 56 million gallons of that “cerulean blue,” ice-cold water into the Lake daily. It can be seen from overlooks high above, near the castle’s ruins. It can also be seen from a paved walkway at the cove’s head. From there, hikers can ascend 316 steps to other vantage points showing the spectacular waters and vistas for which this park is known and loved. Ha Ha Tonka’s Park Superintendent, Ryan King, is proud to oversee Ha Ha Tonka. He recently earned the Department of Natural Resources’ (DNR) one and only Rock Star Award for his efforts to keep the park open and safe through the challenging days of 2020 and 2021. King notes those days were “exciting,” too. People gravitated to the state’s parks, reacquainting themselves with Missouri’s rich natural gems, excited to be outdoors, but crowds endangered their experience so King collaborated with the Ha Ha Tonka team. Together, they planned and worked long hours to prevent overcrowding so the maximum number of people could truly enjoy the open-air. One special open-air opportunity is to see the park from the water. Kayaks are available to rent at Spring Cove. Paddlers will enjoy a peaceful pace, the scent of native plants in bloom, and perhaps a statuesque heron posing on a nearby log. Paddlers will also enjoy toning core muscles and strengthening the upper body. Benefits from exercise is one reason Superintendent King became a kayak instructor, certified by the American Canoe Association. Park visitors can take advantage of his training for a modest $5 fee. The money reserves a place in Learn to Paddle courses for those who want to know more before venturing out on their own. It also maintains and buys kayaks. Training is not a requirement, however. 12 VACATION NEWS

DAY TRIP
A step back in time
Above: The Spring at Ha Ha Tonka.
Photo by Al Griffin You’ll see plenty of wildlife paddling on Lake of the Ozarks.
Photo provided by Greg Stoner
One piece of advice King emphasizes is the Lake’s pace. On Saturdays, for example, the cove is busy with boaters coming and going, coving, and fishing. Kayakers will be just one of many using the cove. Traffic is lighter other days of the week. Ha Ha Tonka also offers stand-up paddle boards. Boards are fewer in number and there is no training for their use. A dozen kayaks are available daily. The number available for both boards and kayaks require planning ahead and making reservations. Paddlers can leave the cove, of course. One destination is the 13-mile Big Niangua River Trail (BNRT), accessible by kayak. Maps online guide paddlers to places motorized boats cannot go. Paddlers can enter Onyx Cave or study the Gauge House once used to measure the height of the river. June 17-30, 2022
Superintendent King invites visitors to see Ha Ha Tonka from the water using the park’s kayak-rental program. Fresh and open air awaits. So do birdsong, the occasional fish slapping the water, and good physical exercise for all ages. From the cove, paddlers will see the castle high above, the tall water tower, and Missouri’s landscape—great state gems for all to gather.
Built in the early 1930’s, our recently restored rooms will take you back to simple times. The early days of bus & railway rest stops, road-trips in the family car, and the quintessential motor court -the era of the Great American Motel. Located in downtown Eldon Missouri.

he International Union of Operating Engineers Local148 is hosting its 35th annual Bass Tournament to benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis. The tournament will be held September 10 at PB2 on Lake of the Ozarks. A group of dedicated and energized Local 148 volunteers, both active and retired members, have donated a weekend of their time to raise money for charities dedicated to battling childhood diseases. Since its inception at Sterett Creek on Truman Lake in 1988, this one-of-a-kind tournament has raised over $1.8 million for Cystic Fibrosis research, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital, and now the Ronald McDonald House of St. Louis. The Ronald McDonald House of St. Louis provides a home away from home for families of seriously-ill children, and support to organizations that serve the needs of children. St. Louis’ three Ronald McDonald Houses offer parents and family members a respite from hospital waiting rooms 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Their houses provide the essential comforts of home. The tournament is designed to allow your everyday fisherman the opportunity to have a fun day of fishing along with helping a great cause. The grand prize is $2,500. All you have to do is register as a fisherman. You don’t even have to catch a fish to qualify to win. There will also be cash prizes based upon 10 percent of the number of boats fishing. The $150 entry fee includes a variety of attendance prizes, brats and complimentary beverages Friday evening, and a pork steak dinner with complimentary beverages Saturday afternoon. Friday night local guides will attend to speak about fishing conditions along with hot lures at the Lake. Sign up at www.local148.com

GOLF by Paul Leahy/Director of Golf at The Oaks at Margaritaville Lake Resort
Tips for improving your game
I
have been a PGA Professional for 31 years and have given hundreds of lessons over my career. I have learned a lot about teaching this great game. Each time I give a lesson, read instructional material or listen to other teachers I gather information that makes me a more proficient teacher of the game. Here are some of the most important swing thoughts and observations that have influenced my teaching mythology, and hopefully will help you ways to improve your game this spring. Start early. Yes, this game is for all ages, but starting early when you have no preconceived ideas or bad habits will only benefit you. Don’t worry though if you pick the game up later in life you will be just fine. Concentrate heavily on the basics when you start playing and never stop practicing the basics your whole life. The basics of any athletic movement is the basis for success. In golf it starts with the grip. Then aim, alignment, posture, ball position and balance. A proper grip is vital because the way you place your hands on the club has a direct impact on the clubface at impact. Stand up and let your hands fall to your side. Notice how the palms of your hands face your body. Remember that when you place your hands on the club, your palms should face inward because that’s how your hands fall naturally. I see so many players who grip the club where one or sometimes both palms are facing the sky. Your hands, while swinging the club, will naturally want to move into a more natural position. If that happens do you think the clubface will be in the same position at impact? Probably not. The clubface will most likely be closed or open at impact, because your hands have moved into a position that is more comfortable. Make sure you have a proper, naturally comfortable grip on the golf club and you will have the best chance of continued success and enjoyment. Posture and balance go hand-in-hand in the golf swing. Any athletic activity you do successfully you are balanced
16 VACATION NEWS
throughout the motion. You can’t be successful without proper balance. When you throw a ball, ski, dance, hit a tennis ball or baseball, throw darts, play corn hole or whatever you do you maintain your balance throughout the activity to give yourself the best possibility of a successful outcome. Start with your feet about shoulder width apart, and bend at the waist with your knees slightly bent letting your arms and hands hang down with your weight balanced over the balls of your feet. From this position you should be able to move side to side without readjusting your weight distribution. As you slide the club into your hands (for a right-handed player) your right hand will slide down while your left hand will be on the top of the grip. In this position you should be naturally set up with a slight tilt as your right shoulder should be lower than your left while you address the golf ball to prepare to swing. Depending on the club you are using and the ball position, the tilt of your spine or your shoulder angle will be more pronounced with a driver then it is with a pitching wedge. The farther forward the ball position toward your lead foot, the greater the tilt or shoulder angle. From this position you should be balanced with slightly more weight being positioned on your back foot as you begin your swing. During the swing it is imperative to maintain this spine tilt throughout your swing until impact. If the spine tilts in the other direction during your swing, it will need to be corrected before impact or you will have difficulty getting the ball airborne. Straightening of the right knee on the backswing is one of the biggest mistakes a right-handed player can make, as you immediately lose your angles required to get the ball airborne. Aim, alignment and ball position are the last piece to consider before making that swing. Most players try and line their body, i.e. feet, hips, shoulders towards their intended target. This is incorrect. If you do that think about where the ball is located and where your club head is, they June 17-30, 2022

GOLF are away from your body. In this scenario the club head is now pointed to the right of where you think you are aiming, causing you to swing across your body. This also causes you to most likely lose the proper angles and your balance. The proper way to align yourself is to set up like you’re standing on a pair of railroad tracks. A right-handed player will stand on the left track making sure his feet, hips and shoulders are parallel to the track they are on. The club head and ball are located on the right track, which if extended out, should go through the intended starting point of your shot or at your target if you are attempting to hit a straight shot. The body should never be lined up where if a line is extended it would cut through your intended target line. As you begin learning the swing your ball position will change slightly depending on the club. Any easy way to start is the ball position will be in the middle of your stance with your shortest club. As each club gets longer the ball position will move slightly forward until you get to the driver where the ball position will be inside your left heel. With the driver you will feel the most dramatic tilt of the spine and your right shoulder will be at its lowest point compared to your left. Once again, keeping your spine angle and your position behind the golf ball will allow you the best opportunity to make solid contact. Other key elements to consider before you actually
make the swing is to stand tall. Do not hunch your shoulders or have your chin buried in your sternum. By standing tall and having your chin up your shoulders will have the best opportunity to rotate unrestricted under the chin to maintain the proper posture and angles throughout the swing. Another myth in the golf swing is that your hands rotate open and then close during the swing. The hands actually hinge during the swing. How do you know if you are hinging and not opening the hands? Try this … with the club on the ground hinge the club upward so it is out in front of you. Then rotate your shoulders and chest away from you. At this point the club should be parallel to the ground behind you with the toe of the club pointing to the sky. This is the proper position of the club at this point. Now try to get the club into this position by starting with the club on the ground. If you can get the club into the same position on the backswing you are correctly hinging your wrists. If the club face is facing the ground or the sky at this point, you are not properly hinging your wrists. Lastly, relax. The more relaxed you can be in your hands, arms and shoulders the more effortless your swing will be. Tension is a speed killer in the golf swing. For a better understanding of your golf swing, see a PGA Professional for some detailed instruction. The fundamentals are the best way to improve fast and to have more fun, and that’s the name of the game!

BOATING story by Doug Beck
Making the Lake safe
Charis Patires photo
T
he Lake of the Ozarks Water Safety Council (WSC) is a group of businesses, organization, and private citizens that are dedicated to promoting water safety here at Lake of the Ozarks. The council was formed in 2007 non-profit 501c3 public service organization that: promotes boating and water safety at the Lake Of The Ozarks; serves as a local (or regional) source for boating and water safety information for the general public; encourages cooperation, networking, and communication between the member agencies of the council as well as other organizations; and promotes wearing life jackets and designating sober captains while recreating on the Lake of the Ozarks. Our mission is simple: We want to keep our Lake safe. We want everyone to wear life jackets, designate a captain, and come and enjoy the Lake and all it has to offer in the safest manner possible. The safety on our Lake is imperative to our residents and to our visitors. We want June 17-30, 2022
our visitors to be able to share their happy, positive experiences from their time at Lake of the Ozarks, go back home, and encourage others to do the same. And in turn, this benefits our residents and businesses through the vital economic impact that is generated through tourism. The WSC has been hosting educational events and programs to fulfill that mission. The first installation of five Life Jacket Loner Stations has been set up at Lake of the Ozarks, located at Public Beach 1 and 2 at the Lake of the Ozarks State Park. The life jacket loaner program provides the public with free use of life jackets on a first come, first served basis. Research shows that most drownings could have been prevented if a life jacket had been worn by the victim. The goals for this program is to increase life jacket wear during water-based activities as well as to educate the visiting public on the importance of proper use and fit. VACATION NEWS 23
BOATING
Above: The life jacket loner program.
Life jacket loaner stations have been successfully used since the mid-1980s by various organizations as a tool in reducing public recreation-related fatalities on their waters. Most of these stations offer various sizes of life jackets from infant to adult in limited quantities. Demand for use of the life jackets has generally exceeded the available supply. Many of the loaner stations in existence have cooperatively been installed and maintained by local partners, such as the Safe Kids Coalition, Boy or Girl Scout organizations, or local water safety councils. How can you help? Look for a donation jar at Lake area businesses. Give to save a life, and promote boating and water safety. Held in May, National Water Safety Month helps prepare everyone for recreational activities. Water is an attraction during the summer months. Whether we’re drawn to lakes and rivers or public pools and water slides, safety is a necessary concern. We use the water for leisure, sport, and general outdoor relaxation. Boating with or without motors, swimming, fishing and many other kinds of recreation takes place in and around the water. 24 VACATION NEWS
To kick off Water Safety Month several events were held including the Missouri legislature wearing life jackets to promote their usage; the Wear Your Life Jacket to Work Day, held May 20 this year; and the Water Safety Seminar, held May 21. How can you be part of the Water Safety Council?
If you would like to attend a meeting, call Water Safety Council President KC Cloke at 573-346-2227; cochair Bob May at 660-4922720 or marketing director Doug Beck at 573-216-814. Meetings are held the 3rd Tuesday of the month from 11 a.m.-12 p.m. at the Camdenton Chamber of Commerce. Meeting are open to all public interested in education and Water Safety. Doug Beck is the marketing director of Lake of the Ozarks Water Safety Council and the president of the Captains Association of Missouri.

RESTAURANT PROFILE by Charis Patires
Far from ordinary
D
usty and Kaitlin Jewell are devoted to take coffee and donuts to another level. Owners of MO Co & Dough, the newest cafe in the Lake area, nothing they serve is ordinary. “We are all about creativity, coffee, donuts and our community,” Dusty said. The tag line of “keeping it MO local” is apparent in their ideology as well as the titles of menu items. “Our ethically-sourced, single-origin coffee beans are roasted by Firefly Valley Farms in Roach. All of our baking ingredients are locally sourced as well as our honey from Eldon that we use throughout our dishes. We also named menu items to be MO fun playing up our local vibe.” Dusty and Kaitlin have longstanding roots in the community. Kaitlin went to the School of the Osage and Dusty’s family is three generations strong in the area. As former managers at one of the largest lakefront restaurants and entertainment venues, they wanted to strike off on their own adventure in the industry and play to their passions. Their restaurant experience is over 25 years combined and spans from Osage Beach to Seattle’s coffee scene (Dusty), to Columbus, Ohio where Kaitlin created local artisan baked goods. “We love to travel and draw inspiration from funky towns like Seattle, Columbus, Nashville, and Austin but clearly our heart and heaviest influences are in Missouri.” he said. They noticed the only coffee options in Osage Beach are big brands with no local ties and strive to be a local “mom and pop” shop that is invested in the community, serving a better-quality product with cuisine you won’t see anywhere else. The menu is centered around coffee, donuts and Missouri. “Our menu is creatively different and built on strangely delicious combinations. We use the donut as our muse for food and play with some fun flavors and textures like Lotus Energy and Bursting Boba in our drinks.” Dusty said. Called MOnuts, there are four weekly rotating flavors of craft donuts with unique pairings of glazes and topping combinations. The first week they were open, the best seller was the White Chocolate Limoncello, which sold out every day. Their MO Boats and Holes (in the food service industry a boat is slang for food tray/basket and holes for donut holes) are topped with decadent ingredients. The Blueberry Fruit Salad: glazed donut holes, blueberries, local honey, and powered sugar, and The Can’t Help Falling In Love (based off an Elvis song and his favorite sandwich) glazed donut holes, peanut butter, chocolate, banana, bacon are two of the best sellers. They also offer Loaded MOnuts, sandwiches piled onto a donut base. One of the most popular, the Southern Sweet Heat consists of a glazed MOnut, breaded chicken breast, hot honey glaze (local honey and sriracha), coleslaw, and pickles hitting your tastebuds with sweet, spicy, crunchy goodness. MoShakes are an ice cream based blended drink mixed with flavors that complement the MOnut placed on top. There are some gluten free, dairy free and health food options as well, like a weekly rotating gluten-free MOnut, MOuffles (egg soufflés), MOasts (gluten free optional loaded toasts) and fresh fruit smoothies.
