Summer safety tips on and off the water

T

he Summer Solstice is here and so is the heat. With the summer boating season in full swing, it’s the time of year for watersports, fishing off boat docks or catamarans, and just simply enjoying that summer sun. But it’s also the time of year when it can get dangerously hot. It can be difficult to know just how to stay cool when working outside in the heat for hours at a time. That’s why taking the proper summer heat safety precautions is a must. Follow these summer heat safety tips, and you’ll be cool and comfortable all day long. Stay Hydrated

One of the most basic (and one of the most forgotten) ways to keep your body cool on hot days is by keeping yourself hydrated. When your body is hot, it perspires as a way to regulate your body temperature. So, you need to frequently replenish liquids in order to remain hydrated on extra hot days. Even if you don’t feel thirsty, you Lake Media file photo

12 VACATION NEWS

July 1 - 14, 2022

OUTDOORS need to drink plenty of water in order to keep your body cool. If you don’t drink enough fluids, you may run the risk of getting sick with sun or heatstroke. Make sure to bring extra water if you’re going fishing on a particularly hot day. You should be drinking at least one quart of water every hour. We know a cold beer sounds nice, but alcoholic and caffeinated drinks should be avoided. They can ultimately worsen effects from the heat. Avoid The Hottest Times Of The Day Try to get the majority of your fishing done during the coolest parts of the day (4 a.m. to 7 a.m.) If you can, avoid going out during the hottest points of the day (11 a.m. to 4 p.m.), but if this can’t be avoided, make sure to drink plenty of water. Protect Your Eyes

With intense UV rays from the sun while out on the water, it’s important to protect your eyes. Opt for polarized lenses that can help to cut down on the sun’s glare on the water. Use Sunscreen

Being out on a boat all day under the hot sun can be extremely dangerous. With no precautions in place, it can lead to sunburns, skin damage and, in some cases, skin cancer. You need to use sunscreen on a regular basis if you want to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. It’s one of the most important hot weather tips we can share with you. And don’t be fooled by cloudy conditions, you’re still at risk even when the sun isn’t out. Adults should be using a minimum of SPF 15 and children should be using at least 30. When boating or fishing, you should be using a sport sunscreen that’s both waterproof and sweat proof. Apply sunscreen 20 minutes before going in the sun and make sure to re-apply multiple times throughout the day. Wear Protective Clothing

Did you know that many fishing gear companies make clothing engineered to not only wick away sweat, but also offer 35 to 50 SPF protection from UV rays? While this is a fantastic option, don’t feel July 1-14, 2022

that you have to shell out for an all-new outfit to go fishing. Here are some tips you can likely follow with what’s already in your closet. • Opt for light, loose-fitting, breathable fabrics in light colors. • Don’t count out long-sleeve tops or long pants. By keeping these on hand, you can give your arms and legs a break from the sun while staying cool. • Don’t wear shoes or socks (they’re known to trap heat). Instead, wear a pair of sandals or open-toed shoes. • Wear a hat, even if it’s a simple baseball hat, in order to keep the sun off your face, neck, ears and shoulders. The wider the brim, the better! Use The Buddy System

On hot days, it can be a literal lifesaver to utilize the age-old buddy system. Don’t go out fishing alone; bring a fishing buddy, relative or friend along so you can watch out for each other in case someone gets sunstroke. Bring A Mister

While you’re out the lake or ocean, portable misters are just the thing to cool you down and keep the summer heat at bay. Fill it up with ice cold water and ice cubes in the beginning of the day and you’ll be set for the rest of your boating day trip.

Take Cover

If it’s extremely hot out, sometimes it’s best to just stay out of the sun if you can help it. If your boat has a cabin or shaded area, take breaks whenever you can. If your boat doesn’t have any shade, consider dividing up your fishing outing with a mid-day break and going back to shore for lunch or a nice nap. Take A Dip

A great way to cool off when the sun gets to be too much is by simply jumping in the water. It’s all around you, why not take advantage of it? By taking frequent dips, you’ll stay cool all day long. - Doug Beck is the a Certified National Safe Boating Council Instructor, co-chair of Lake of the Ozarks Water Safety Council, and president Captains Association of Missouri

GOLF by Paul Leahy

The benefits of golf on your health

G

olf is inherently not thought of as a strenuous workout, so what kinds of health benefits can you actually get? Most sports like football, basketball and tennis are considered high-impact sports. Golf, on the other hand, is low impact but actually has many health benefits high-impact sports don’t have. Golf is especially beneficial if you walk, but riding in a cart can also provide some necessary and beneficial long-term health benefits. The low impact workout of golf is much kinder on your joints and can lead to a lifetime of enjoyment. Golf’s health benefits can continue throughout your lifetime where those high-impact sports we loved as kids will not. The motion of the golf swing can keep your body active and your muscles stretched and strong to prevent nagging injuries in your back and joints as we age. If you walk and play you can expect to walk anywhere from three to six miles, and you can burn anywhere between 350 to 475 calories each hour you play. With every swing you make, you are using and testing your arms, back and core muscles. Most players will make between 30 and 50 full swings in 18 holes, and this coinciding with walking will be a great full body workout. By playing golf and staying physically fit you will be able to play into your senior years. Studies have proven golf lowers hip fractures by 35 to 68 percent in older people. Diabetes is lowered by 30 to 40 percent and stroke potential is lowered by 20 to 35 percent. Walking 2.5 hours a week reduces your risk of a heart attack by up to 40 percent, which for any avid golfer should be well attainable with just one or two rounds of golf per week, depending if you ride a cart or walk. The mental health aspects of golf can’t be overlooked either, especially over the last two-plus years of the pandemic. The social nature of golf, even during the last few years, has been one of the few places you could physically have some social interaction with others without having to wear a mask. Lack of social interaction can lead to depression, anxiety, stress and other mental health issues. Playing golf outside in the fresh air has been proven by numerous studies to help alleviate stress and will restore and rejuvenate your mind from mental fatigue. I believe the social nature of the game spurred a resurgence in the popularity of the game over the past couple of years. People were locked in their homes for days and months on end without interacting with others besides via Zoom, increasing the popularity of golf. People started flocking to the golf course to see friends, interact and be normal for a few hours before heading back to reality. Golf courses may not have been on the front lines of the pandemic, like healthcare workers, police and others directly involved in curbing and curing the virus, but we believe we played a vital role in the mental health of many. We provided a safe space for them to enjoy the outdoors, interact with friends and clear their minds of daily stress. Golf provided that outlet for stress and anxiety and hopefully we helped a lot people deal with the daily grind in a more positive and meaningful fashion. Golf also mentally challenges you and keeps your brain sharp. You must keep focused, plan moves and execute strategies. By keeping your mind active, you focus more on your game and less on things that are stressful or sad. Playing golf releases “feel good” endorphins to combat anxiety and depression. A 2009 Swedish study concluded that golfers have an increased life expectancy of about five years. Golfers know that golf can be a frustrating game and we take for granted the beauty of our surroundings. During the pandemic new and old golfers alike rekindled their love for the game. Golfers came to the course to get away from the pressures of life and in turn helped their mental and physical wellbeing in the process. Now that the pandemic is in the rear view mirror, golfers continue to head to the course for fun, relaxation, social interaction and a healthier lifestyle. What are you waiting for? Head to your local course and take a lesson, play nine or just take in the fresh air and enjoy the benefits of golf! he International Union of Operating Engineers Local 148 is hosting its 35th annual Charity Bass Tournament to benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis. The tournament will be held September 10 at PB2 on Lake of the Ozarks. A group of dedicated and energized Local 148 volunteers, both active and retired members, have donated a weekend of their time to raise money for charities dedicated to battling childhood diseases. Since its inception at Sterett Creek on Truman Lake in 1988, this one-of-a-kind tournament has raised over $1.8 million for Cystic Fibrosis research, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital, and now the Ronald McDonald House of St. Louis. The Ronald McDonald House of St. Louis provides a home away from home for families of seriously-ill children, and support to organizations that serve the needs of children. St. Louis’ three Ronald McDonald Houses offer parents and family members a respite from hospital waiting rooms 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Their houses provide the essential comforts of home. The tournament is designed to allow your everyday fisherman the opportunity to have a fun day of fishing along with helping a great cause. s people celebrate this summer, the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) reminds everyone to be careful with fireworks, campfires, and other sources of fire that could cause a wildfire. FIREWORKS: Don’t light fireworks in any areas where the sparks could ignite dry grass, leaves, or other potential fire fuel. Always have an approved fire extinguisher and an available water supply to douse sparks or flames. Wet the area around where fireworks are being discharged. Check with local ordinances and authorities for bans on fireworks and open burning. As people celebrate this OUTDOOR BURNING: Don’t burn during summer, MDC reminds wrong conditions. Dry grass, high temperatures, low everyone to be careful humidity, and wind make fire nearly impossible to with campfires and other control. Check with local fire departments regarding sources of fire that could burn bans that may be in place. A person who starts cause a wildfire. a fire for any reason is responsible for any damage it may cause. DRIVING OFF ROAD: Wildfires can start when dry fuel, such as grass, comes in contact with catalytic converters. Think twice before driving into and across a grassy field. Never park over tall, dry grass or piles of leaves that can touch the underside of a vehicle. When driving vehicles off road, regularly inspect the undercarriage to ensure that fuel and brake lines are intact, and no oil leaks are apparent. Always carry an approved fire extinguisher on vehicles that are used off road. Check for the presence of spark arresters on ATV exhausts. MAKING A CAMPFIRE: Clear a generous zone around fire rings. Store unused firewood a good distance from a campfire. Never use gasoline, kerosene, or other flammable liquid to start a fire. Keep campfires small and controllable. Keep fire-extinguishing materials, such as a rake, shovel, and bucket of water, close. Extinguish campfires each night and before leaving camp, even if it’s just for a few moments. Learn more about camping on MDC areas at mdc.mo.gov/discovernature/activities/camping. CALL FOR HELP: Call 911 at the first sign of a fire getting out of control. REPORT FOREST ARSON: Wildfires are sometimes set by vandals. Help stop arson by calling 800-392-1111 and reporting any potential arson activities. Callers will remain anonymous, and rewards are possible. PRESCRIBED FIRE: Fire used in the wrong way can create disasters. Used in the right way, fire can help create habitat for wildlife. For more information on using prescribed fire as a land-management tool, visit mdc.mo.gov/your-property/firemanagement/prescribed-fire. July 1 - 14, 2022

T

he decision to buy a home is significant. Real estate is the biggest investment the average person will make in his or her lifetime, which underscores just how significant the home buying decision can be. The real estate experts at Zillow recently reported that the national median price of a home in the United States is $272,446. However, since the National Association of Realtors reported a record low housing inventory late in 2020, the average house price has been rising rapidly nationwide. The Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis estimates the median home sales price at $374,900, and certain states have much higher prices. WOWA, a real estate and finance technology company, says the average sale price of a home in Canada was $679,051 in July 2021. Most people do not have $300,000 to $600,000 in savings on hand to purchase a home in cash. That means they’ll need to rely on financing to pay for their dream homes.

REAL ESTATE SECTION

Real estate financing options

Conventional lending

Conventional lending refers to when a bank or another financial institution loans a home buyer money to buy a home. This is one of the most common ways to fund a home purchase. Personal credit score as well as credit history help determine eligibility and interest rates for conventional loans. Availability of assets as well as income level are some additional determining factors. Conventional loans are traditionally 10-, 15- or 30-year notes and will require a certain percentage as the down payment to secure the loan. The bank will determine the down payment requirement, which is typically somewhere between 3 and 20 percent. FHA loan

A Federal Housing Administration loan is issued by an FHA-approved lender. These loans are designed for low-to-moderate-income borrowers, according to the financial guide Investopedia. FHA loans require lower minimum down payments and lower credit scores than many conventional loans. FHA loans also require mortage insurance up front, plus annually for 11 years or the life of the loan depending on the length of the loan. HELOC

A Home Equity Line of Credit, commonly called a HELOC loan, borrows against the available equity in your home to create a line of credit, much like a credit card. These funds can be used for large expenses or to consolidate higher-interest rate debt on other loans, according to Bank of America. It may be possible to use a HELOC to secure funding to make improvements to a home for those who want to flip it as an investment property. Private money lenders

Individuals investing in real estate who do not intend to use a property as a primary residence may turn to private money lenders. These investors can tap into capital from personal connections and lend at specified interest rates and payback periods, according to Fortune Builders, a real estate investing resource. Keep in mind the interest rate will likely be higher with a private lender than through a conventional lender. The repayment term also will be shorter. VA-backed loan

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has a program for acquiring loans through conventional lenders that will be partially guaranteed against loss through the VA. This enables a lender to give better loan terms, such as the option to pay no down payment. Interested parties need to qualify for a Certificate of Eligibility and then work with qualified lenders. People have several options to finance the purchase of a home. These loans can help make the dream of home ownership a reality. Potential buyers are urged to speak with mortgage professionals or financial planners to consider their options.

Deck tech: Top online tools for designing your dream deck

Visualize the possibilities

Every great outdoor space starts with a vision! Using the latest augmented reality (AR) technology, apps like the Trex AR Deck Visualizer tool allow users to explore design possibilities for their outdoor spaces by experimenting with different decking shapes, board colors and railing combinations against the backdrop of their own personal home environments. The interactive program also has features to help determine approximate deck size/square footage and users can order decking samples right from the app, which is available for free via the Apple Store and Google Play. Design from your desktop

Once you’ve envisioned your new deck, bring it to life using an online deck design tool - no engineering or architecture degree required. Decks.com is a helpful resource that offers a library of downloadable deck plans, along with an easy-to-use deck design program that enables users to experiment with different features and explore options in 3D and 2D top, side and front views. Trex also offers a desktop deck design program. Recent enhancements include the ability to create multi-level decks and non-traditional layouts customized to your home’s dimensions and populated with specific decking and railing products to bring your vision and project one step closer to reality. Both the Decks.com and Trex programs automatically generate material lists and cost estimates, along with printable renderings for sharing with family, friends and potential contractors. Calculate costs

To ensure your deck dreams remain within reach, make use of online material and cost calculators. These tools provide valuable guidance in the early planning stages to help you manage expectations and make informed decisions. Rough cost estimates for materials can be determined based on deck size, substructure needs, and the decking and railing products being considered to give planners a good starting point for budgeting. More deck ideas, information, and digital tools are available online at www.trex.com/academy.

How to make your outdoor kitchen efficient, functional

O

utdoor living spaces have expanded into fully realized environments over the past couple of years, and this is especially true for kitchens. While previous outdoor spaces may have boasted a grill or smoker to encourage dining al fresco, today’s homeowner expects a great deal more. The outdoor kitchen can now be a fully functional, efficient, comfortable and beautiful area, not just for occasional entertaining, but everyday living. Here are some outdoor kitchen trends inspiring today’s homeowners to make the most of being outside with family and friends. Designing spaces with multiple uses

REAL ESTATE SECTION

Gone are the days of the simple patio, grill and picnic table. Today’s homeowner is prioritizing the health and wellness benefits of spending time outside, fostering a serene and enjoyable space to be used every day. To create an inspiring space, design beyond the basics of outdoor food prep. Imagine a space complete with comfortable seating, outdoor lighting and audio technology - with plenty of shade, plus privacy walls or screens, so everyone feels relaxed while enjoying the space. Highlight natural elements by creating a living wall of plants, or design a fun gathering spot around a fire pit or outdoor fireplace. Bringing an entire kitchen outdoors

Today’s outdoor kitchen offers everything you need for cooking - and that means everything, from a range and cooktop to a pizza oven, refrigerator - and even the kitchen sink. A growing trend in outdoor kitchen design is to include all the creature comforts of an indoor kitchen, and then some. Nearly every indoor kitchen appliance now has an outdoor-rated version: icemakers, refrigerators, dishwashers, keg coolers and more. With a fully functioning outdoor kitchen, there’s no need to constantly run indoors for supplies - everything you need is at your fingertips. Add a stereo system, Wi-Fi access and a TV, and you can truly live in your outdoor space. This was the inspiration behind the new Belgard Elements Collection, featuring stainless appliances and fixtures, including all the cooking, storage, bar and sink accessories to make your outdoor living areas feel complete. The collection includes: * Built-in grills and grill islands * Outdoor ovens with multiple cooking surfaces, griddle plates and more

40 VACATION NEWS

* Smoker trays * Rotisserie kits * Pizza ovens and accessories * Gas timers * Sinks And storage - with stainless steel cabinet doors and drawers that resist rot, weather and insects. Stainless also adds a striking look to coordinate with grills and appliances. Creating modular outdoor kitchens

One easy way to design a space with multiple uses is with a modular outdoor kitchen. For example, the Artforms™ modular outdoor kitchen units let you enjoy the look of a custom outdoor kitchen at an affordable price and a fraction of the installation time. The pre-formed concrete panels allow for multiple personalized configurations and are shipped in sections to be quickly installed on-site. And because these modular units are constructed with Belgard products, they blend effortlessly with Belgard pavers, walls, walkways or fire pits. Expanding seating options

Whether you’re hosting a family meal or special celebration, you’ll want plenty of seating for everyone. Here are two trending options: * Bar-style seating is popular in outdoor kitchen design for the same reason it’s popular in interior kitchen design: It creates a communal atmosphere where family and guests can interact during meal prep. With the addition of a television, it becomes the perfect spot for outdoor tailgating. * Seat walls - Outdoor built-in seating has been trending for years, especially around fire features. Now the trend has found its way to outdoor kitchens, helping define the space, adding a striking aesthetic and providing ample seating for large gatherings. “Modern outdoor designs blur the line between indoor and outdoor living,” said Joe Raboine, Director of Residential Hardscapes at Belgard. “Outdoor kitchens are becoming not only much more efficient and functional, but also tons more fun to spend time in - while also adding a lot of value to your home.” - Articles in this section provided by BrandPoint

RESTAURANT PROFILE by Charis Patires

Take a break:

Pool haul offers sports, games and food in Osage Beach

W

hen David Dyer moved to the Lake several years ago, he noticed there wasn’t pool haul in the Lake area. So, he decided to open one up. Lake Billiards & Sports Bar in Osage Beach is no regular pool haul. It has a variety of well-kept pool tables, in a range of sizes. To play cost $1/game or you can rent by the hour for $4/person or $7 for two or more people before 6 p.m. It will cost $1 more after 6 p.m. There is also a Snooker table and a Carom table, which you won’t be able to find anywhere else in the Lake area. You can bring your own cue stick or borrow the many available. A pool league is active from September-February each year, making this the perfect winter hangout. Besides pool, there are five electronic soft-tip dart boards and two steal-tip dart boards are available, a few arcade games, Keno, lottery games, and poker machines. Several TVs around the room always have a game on. When those hunger pains kick in, you won’t be disappointed by the menu. Lake Billiards is a great spot to stop in for lunch or dinner, even if you have no plans to play. The chef takes pride in serving up a full menu that consists of a large selection of appetizers, Brew Pub Pizza, nachos, salads, baskets, burgers and wraps and sandwiches. Five different styles of wings are served. Some of the more popular and unique items include the White BBQ Chicken Grinder made with shredded chicken breast tenders, on French bread and smothered with bubbly Monterrey Jack and white BBQ sauce. The Cheese Steak sandwich is also a hit. Baskets included Fried Catfish, Chicken Strips, and Shrimp. Food is served up until midnight, another difficult option to find at the Lake. Mondays are hospitality/industry night with Happy Hour prices all evening. A full bar with eight beers on tap, and selection of wines are served up by friendly bartenders. This might be the place where you find the longest Happy Hour at the Lake, serving $1 off drinks and appetizers from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. daily. With 5,000 square feet of space, there’s plenty of room to spread out, play and eat. The billiard haul is non-smoking but has a fenced-in beer garden to sit outside. Dyer says families are welcome, but a more adult-only crowd does come out around 8 p.m.
