Across the street from the Old Village Mercantile stands the old town hall building. A short walk will lead you to the first Masonic Lodge in Missouri. Not far from there is the Old Caledonian Bed and Breakfast and Natural Farm. Gilliam and her hus band owned it in the 1990s before selling it to a family from Kansas City. They said they looked at a B&B in Camdenton near Ha Ha Tonka that was for sale, but chose the charming small town of Caledonia and the history of this particular home.

12 VACATION NEWS August 26 - September 8, 2022 DAY TRIP

Thousands of cars are parked near the Huzzah Valley Resort at Steelville, the last good-sized town before arriving in Caledonia.Thetemperature was reaching 103 degrees that day, but it didn’t stop the paddlers from splashing in the river. The streets were quiet upon arrival at 8 a.m. as prepara tions were being made for a festival that day. The annual Caledonia Blackberry Festival kicked off with a kid’s wa termelon eating contest and blackberry dessert contest. Vendors featured blackberries in virtually everything that day, whether it be jam, cake, cupcakes or an embroidered blackberry themed craft. Even the barbecue sauce served at the food trucks was blackberry, drizzled on sticks of grilled pork. The Village Barn, located in the City Park, is a centerpiece for the tiny town. The big red barn gives church and civic groups a place to gather for fundraisers or serves as a wedding venue. Never has community pride been more evident than in Caledonia. Perhaps it is because of their history. Beginning as a settlement of Scottish immigrants, Caledonia has seen good and hard times. The magnificent historic homes testify to a time of prosperity there. Later days saw the village become a ghost town after the iron mining industry dried up. Caledonia has bounced back over the last 40 years or so, thanks to some extremely hardworking people with a vision. One of those residents is NinaNinaGilliam.owns several ventures in town, one being a tourist destination. The Old Village Mer cantile sits in one of the many historic buildings of a National Historic District.

The Ruggles-Evans-Dent Home is part of the 33 buildings in the historical district, and is the former home of Scottish Settler Elijah Ruggles. The Greek Revival style mansion sits on the grounds where walnut trees were made into furnishings which today are inside the home. The home welcomes visitors to a Victorian-era experience with mansion-like touches built in the wilder ness of Missouri. An ancient cooking hearth is on display behind the check-in desk. The rooms are posh with white bathrobes hanging for guests, and in-room clawfoot bathtubs for an ultimate relaxing experience. If that isn’t enough, there are walking

The best little village in eastern Missouri by Vicki Wood With a population of only 125 people, the Village of Caledonia barely registers as an incorporated town. Despite its small size Caldeonia holds so much charm, it makes the three-hour trip east worth it.

Next door to the Old Village Mercantile is another venture of Nina’s, The Old Village Hot Dog Shoppe. They are open daily with the exception of Wednesdays to make their homemade ice cream. Many other antique and vintage markets can be found in the area.

The Old Village Mercantile holds its own against other famous old-style five and dime stores, like Dick’s Five and Dime in Branson. The 1909 store was filled with tourists, with the in-house homemade ice cream counter being the most popular feature. Aisles of every candy imaginable were neatly arranged in jars that kept families filling bulk bags of all their favorites. The store offered the highest variety of chocolate with at least ten different kinds of chocolate covered coffee beans, a fudge counter with 24 flavors, a coffee bar, cookies and truffles. Antiques and curiosities lined the walls and displays, but the valuable stuff is behind ancient glass display cases, which are filled with a display of antique candy boxes.

16 VACATION NEWS August 26 - September 8, 2022

With the popularity of golf in the country con tinuing to boom the last several years do feel the Lake of the Ozarks could support another golf course? Anthony G., Sunrise Beach As a course operator myself I am not sure an other course is viable currently. The Lake area is definitely growing and more and more people are living here full time or for longer time frames. The issue is cost. It is very expensive to build and maintain a golf course, plus land acquisition in this market currently is extremely high, as evident by the housing market. Most facilities have inven tory available even during the busy weekends of summer.Thelocal courses have certainly seen an in crease in play over the past couple of years and we anticipate that continuing for a few more years. The issue is still the four to five months of unpredictable weather and lack of visitors com ing to the area to play golf in the off-season. The courses do very well in peak season but until there is more demand during the other months of the year or inventory becomes so limited during the summer months, I don’t foresee another facil ity being built soon … but never say never. How many times has St. Andrews hosted the Open Championship? John. G., Tipton The Open Championship has been contested 29 times at St. Andrews since 1873. This July, the 150th Open Championship will be held at St. Andrews marking the 30th time it has hosted, the most of any course on the rotation. Currently every five years the Championship is contested at the Old Course at St. Andrews. Fourteen courses have hosted the championship over the past 149 years. This year’s Champion will join such greats as Bobby Jones, Jack Nicklaus, Seve Ballesteros, Sir Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods by hoisting the Claret Jug as Champion at the Old Course. 1. Scream for Ice Cream

Make sure to grab a tub of ice cream when the LOTO Ice Cream Boat pulls into your cove. Listen for the train whistle.

There seems to be a cool breeze in the air and that means only one thing — summer is coming to an end. Whether we want it to or not, fall is on its way. We’ve still got a couple of weeks of warm weather yet, so check out our top 10 ways to spend the last few weeks of summer.

third season owners John and Krista Congdon have been tak ing out their pontoon equipped with two solar powered freezers packed with a variety of flavors of ice cream and custard. They have a designated route for certain days, but Krista posts a way for people to track their loca tion on Facebook so that anyone can find were they are. On Mondays they typically stop by resorts from the 8 to 22-mile markers. On Wednesdays the route is along the Big and Little Nian gua. On Fridays stops are at Captain Ron’s and Bear Bottom Resort around 2 p.m. Weekend stops vary. Updates are always posted online. The boat has tubs of Ice Cream Factory, Til the Cows Come Home and Ted Drewes for sale in addition to Thelma’s ice cream cookie sand wich.

In an analysis of data from the U.S. Cen sus Bureau’s Survey of Construction, the National Association of Home Builders® found that only around 24 percent of single-family homes built in 2018 have base ments. Homeowners who do not currently have a finished basement but are considering such a project can approach the remodel with a few key factors in mind. Careful consideration of these factors can ensure the project is budgetfriendly and worthy of homeowners’ invest ments.•Investment value: Conventional wisdom among home renovation and real estate experts suggests that a basement remodel is best if done to satisfy current inhabitants and not nec essarily to appeal to prospective buyers once the home is put up for sale. Remodeling maga zine reports that a midrange basement remodel costing around $70,000 will provide a return of around $49,000 (or 70 percent) at resale.

A fully finished and func tional basement is a dream for many home owners. Such a space, when com pleted, can serve as an entertain ment space, a man cave, an artist’s studio, or any number of thingmentsfinishedtheirfunctions.additionalDespiteusefulness,basearesomeofararity.

Though that’s not a poor return on investment, homeowners who are remodeling a basement solely for the potential ROI at resale can find other projects that provide a greater return.

• Soil: Soil surrounding the home should be tested prior to beginning the project. Radon is an odorless gas found in soil that the U.S. Envi ronmental Protection Agency notes can increase individuals’ risk for lung cancer. Radon can seep into basements and increase that risk even fur ther if it is present at elevated levels in the soil surrounding a home. Radon tests are simple and inexpensive, and no basement remodel project should begin without first conducting such a test.Finished basements are valuable spaces.

Homeowners who want to finish or remodel their basements should consider a host of factors be fore beginning the renovation.

• Foundation: The foundation of the home must garner ample consideration before begin ning a basement remodel. Certain foundation issues, such as soft concrete, cracked or curved outside walls and cracks in the flooring, are in dicative of significant issues with the foundation. These issues can be costly to address, and they must be remedied before the base ment remodel can remodelsuchwantthatfinishedmentsishedpartiallyspace:•begin.ExistingSomehomeownersmayhaveboughttheirhomeswithfinbaseorevenareastheysimplytoremodel.Ininstances,apre-inspectionfrom a licensed home inspector can save homeowners lots of money and heartache over the long haul. Partially finished or even aging finished basements might not have been renovated in adherence to codes, which could lead to costly violations down the road. An inspection in ad vance of a remodel can give homeowners an idea of what they will need to do to bring the basement up to code. Local officials also can provide a list of necessary permits and a de tailed description of requirements to ensure the remodeled basement adheres to code.

• Keep quiet on social media. A Credit Sesame survey of former burglars in the United Kingdom found that 78 percent acknowledged monitoring social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter as they try to find homes to burglarize. Individuals about to go on vacation should avoid sharing that on social media.

• Create the impression that someone is home. Just because you’re heading off for parts unknown doesn’t mean you can’t create the impression that life is carrying on as usual within the walls of your home. Smart home technology now enables homeowners to set timers on lights and even home electronics like televisions and ra dios. Homeowners also can ask neighbors to pick up their mail or halt delivery until they return from their trips. Nothing says “no one’s home” as definitively as an overflowing mailbox.

• Switch from a traditional lock and key to a lockbox. Individuals who travel frequently can take a page from the realtor notebook and switch from a traditional lock and key lock system to a lockbox. Lockboxes require that a code is entered before a box containing a key can be unlocked. Homeowners who want this added measure of protection don’t even need to put a key inside the lockbox, which typically covers a lock, making it extremely dif ficult for potential thieves to pick the lock.

• Stay silent while you’re away as well. Social media silence should be continued while you’re on vacation as well. No matter how tempting it may be to share photos from an exotic location, such posts could catch the at tention of all the wrong people. A recent report from MetLife indicated that 35 percent of Americans between the ages of 18 and 34 check in from their locations via social media. That can alert criminals that no one is man ning the fort back home.

Before leaving for vacation, individuals can implement various strategies and safety measures to protect their homes and their belongings while they’re away.

How to protect your home when you’re away occur in the United States and Canada every year. That underscores the importance of protect ing your home at all times, including when you’re not there.

When fresh, they deliver live food full of the vitamins and min erals our body needs plus enzymes to break them down so our bodies can make good use of them, she explained.

At V-Town, smoothies are made with fresh products washed, sliced, frozen, and bagged with Mel’s own hands to insure they are free of preservatives and additives. Any additional ingredients, including plant-based protein, are also organic, natural, and often locally sourced. Some of those anti-inflam matory, antioxidant ingredients are honey, collagen, chia seeds, flaxseed, turmeric, steel cut oats, and spinach.

Flaxseed, spirulina, nuts and nut butters as well as nonfat, plain yogurt can add to a smoothie’s protein power. However, a good diet consists of twice as many fruit and vegetable servings as protein. Smoothies are a great choice in meeting that daily, dietary need.

As a bodybuilder and competitor with the Team Mid MO Muscle, Buehler knows the value of healthy foods. A “smoothie fits very well in [her] daily routine,” she says, be cause it provides a “good dose of … greens and protein.” Any V-Town smoothie can be boosted with protein using a whey or a soy product. SQeZ offers a protein boost, too.

Smoothies made at Sip Coffee House also begin with real, raw ingredients, including local ones in season, because they deliver the most nutrition, according to owner Heather Jackson. In fact, that is one mission for Sip Coffee House: real food for good health made and served quickly. Partner Aaron Logan, most often behind the counter at Sip, and Jackson list nine different smoothies, most created by Jackson herself.

Smoothies provide natural vitamins, minerals, and antioxi dants for heart and digestive health. A smoothie also supplies health-conscious folk with some of the three to five servings of fruit and vegetables recommended daily. Those servings sup port a healthy weight as well as fight inflammation and reduce the risk of chronic disease.

Melissa “Mel” Buehler, V-Town Smoothies’ owner, agrees.

According to SQeZ’s owner, Wrendy Marcinik, D.C., smoothies provide the “wholistic power of … produce.”

Sip Coffee House is a dine-in and drive-through restau rant on 54 in Camdenton, specializing in coffees. However, diners can also order breakfast and sandwiches or salads for lunch. Jackson says the menu begins with what she enjoys, but customers can request their own favorite. If Sip has those items on hand, staff will oblige. That’s one way the Chunky Monkey made its way onto the Sip smoothie menu. High school students on their way to and from school asked for a blend of banana, peanut butter, and chocolate. Others may prefer the Green Tea Detox made with hydrating cucumber swirled with green tea, spinach, mango, pineapple, and honey. It’s a tasty blend.

Food for thought After four years in business, SQez Juice has moved to a new location. There, Dr. Wrendy will continue to offer chiropractic care. Sara Winters, a massage therapist, will continue to offer her services as well. She has been affili ated with SQeZ since the earliest days, but she can also be found at the food and beverage counter serving plantbased drinks, smoothies, and bowls. In the new location, customers will also be able to order a breakfast or lunch from a plant-based menu that includes gluten-free op tions.Dr. Wrendy chose juicing and plant-based foods while preparing for her chiropractic career. She continues to make those choices because she feels better and thinks more clearly. She is not exclusively a vegetarian or vegan, but reports that a ketogenic diet rich in fruits and vegeta bles is good for her. SQeZ is an extension of what she lives and believes in. Dr. Wrendy creates the menu and names each item to evoke “a feeling and an intention.” According to her, “words have power, and [she] wanted to use the power [of words] to inspire.” On the menu, SQeZ fans will find Be Well, a juice blend of garlic, jalapeño, ginger, cucumber, greens, and pineapple providing anti-inflammatory and hydrating properties with a spicy kick.

V-Town celebrated its three-year anniversary on June 1, 2022. Customers count on satisfying, tasty smoothies, of course, but rely on weekly specials, too. These include a creamy, savory butternut squash soup, buddha bowls, salads, and even slow-roasted smoked brisket. Mindful of the many dietary needs in her community, V-Town offers gluten-free and vegan options, too. Flavor is as important at V-Town as health. Buehler suggests that without good flavor matches in ingredi ents, people might hesitate before trying another healthy smoothie or nutritious soup. With no fewer than 19 differ ent smoothies on the V-Town menu, her business offers flavors and combinations to suit all. The Green Monster smoothie, for example, is light as summer, thanks to cu cumber, and creamy as an ice cream shake, thanks to avo cados full of the right kind of fats. It also includes apple for a touch of sweetness and spinach to deepen the green of the avocado while adding vitamins.
