A living history museum

At Missouri Town 1855, a living history museum can be found with authentic buildings and equipment that dates back to that time. With 25 original structures on the property, Missouri Town 1855 offers visitors authen tic experiences of what living was like from 1822-1860.

Thirty acres of housing and buildings which were moved to the park from seven different Missouri counties are show- cased. Buildings in the park include barns, a chicken coop, the church, the Colonel’s House, a hog shed, the law office, a mercantile, various smokehouses, a stagecoach stop, tavern, various homes and well houses.Missouri

Missouri Town 1855 on Facebook

Life all over the state at that time was seeing an ex pansion of magnificent and industrious towns.

Town township was created on the Little Blue River and soon became a draw for families longing for a rural life. With a structure, a couple of mules, a few chickens and a milking cow, settlers claimed small 5- to 10-acre tracts and set up households. In 1855, that was about all a family needed to survive, along with a few seeds for planting. The Little Blue River was a drinking water and bathing source and served as baptismal for the small, one-room church that doubled as a school house.

DAY TRIP

The 46th Annual Fall Festival at Missouri Town 1855 is the perf ect time to experience the historical park. A two-day event Oct. 1-2 off ers demon strations, music, dance and crafts focused on what harvest time was like in the mid-1850s. A vendor village and food trucks will offer more modern day wares.Dec. 4 kicks off the holiday season with a Christmas celebratio n that has been going on for more than 40 years. The yuletide season is a perfect time to be welcomed by the warmth of hearth fires and hot apple cider . The cold weather emphasizes the hardship settlers experienced in a great er way in the winter, but also makes one appreciate the simple coziness o f a single candle in the frontier homes.

3. If you really need to answer, have a passenger answer it for you but wait to return a call/text when you are docked.

The National Association of State Boating Law Ad ministrators reported that 22-24 percent of boating accidents were due to improper lookout and operator inattention combined. Between 9 and 14 percent of fa talities related to boating were also caused by distrac tion.Common causes of boating accidents include many different types of distractions. Electronic distraction can include a phone or spotlight but can also mean the driver was attempting to use a radio, radar or naviga tion device. Objects on the boat, such as electronics, can also cause a lighting glare that prevents drivers from being able to see well. Lighting on shorelines, docks and other boats can cause background light ing that distracts or lowers visibility. Drivers who are eating, smoking or drinking fall into the category of performing distracting activities. Other things, such as sightseeing or talking with other passengers onboard can also be included.

• Boating inattention: 3 fatalities; 25 injuries; prop erty damage 15

Distraction and boating

hile motorists are constantly warned against the dangers of distracted driving, it turns out that boaters are also in need of a reminder. According to statistics from the U.S. Coast Guard, operator inattention was the number one reason for boating accidents. Distracted boat drivers were the cause of over 500 incidents, mak ing it an important topic for discussion.

2. Leave the phone or smart watch at home or in the car. Again, it can wait

• Failure to post a proper lookout: 4 fatalities; 31 injuries; property damage 23

Don’t text and boat, put down the phone, have a lookout, drive responsibly, so you can drive another day.

1. Let the phone ring. You have voicemail. You can return a call or text when you are docked.

by Doug Beck

6. Wear a lifejacket or at least have one accessible in the event of an emergency.

Doug Beck is the co-chair of Lake of the Ozarks Water Safety Council and the president of the Captains Association of Missouri

In 2022 the Lake of the Ozarks has had several boat ing incidents and fatalities that were caused by opera tor inattention, excessive speed and failure to post a proper lookout. Two of which were fatal. Compared to 2021 we had three fatalities where the probable cause was due to inattention, excessive speed or having a properStatewidelookout.in

Just like on land, distracted driving can lead to ac cidents on Missouri’s waterways.

How to avoid becoming a statistic?

19VACATION NEWSSeptember 9 - 22, 2022 BOATING

4. Have a proper look out. You have a lot going on navigating and driving the boat safely. That per son can assist you when visibility may not be the best, there is heavy boat traffic/watching out for other vessels, and looking for objects in the water, etc.5. Reduce the speed. Drive appropriately for the water, weather and boating conditions. That beer will still be at your favorite lakeside bar. If necessary, slow down.

Missouri for 2021 the statistics were:

• Excessive speed: 1 fatality; 20 injuries; property damage 8

W

• The biggest distraction is the cell phone, and even smart watches are designed as a second screen for your phone to aid in productivity and staying con nected. This is all well and good but too many people are obsessed by check their e-mails, texts and phone calls, rater then focusing on the proper operation of the boat. When coupled with alcohol and/or other im pairments it is a recipe for disaster.

“It would hold around 200 guests if some brought their own chairs,” Webb said. “They got several enter tainers from nearby to also perform and began putting on shows two nights a week. Soon, it was up to three shows a week, and later four.”

“Honoring my uncle Lee Mace, music trailblazer, the instrument will be at the Missouri Statehouse,” said Dave Webb of Stilwell, Kan.

At the time of the show’s closing, the bass fiddle was gifted to Dave Webb and displayed in his home. For a while, it was on loan for display at the Ozark Opry Mu seum in the old Opry building.

“We have donated this ‘famous’ bass fiddle to the Missouri State Capitol Museum so everybody can see it,” Webb said.

In 1957, the Maces built a new Ozark Opry audito rium that grew to 1,100 seating capacity. Show season ran from mid-April to mid-October. The Ozark Opry was also on KRCG and KMOS television in a half-hour show every Thursday evening,

Opening ceremonies in Jefferson City were held Aug. 25. The Key bass fiddle, one of fewer than 50 such instruments, was constructed in 1938, a bass fiddle reg istry indicates. The location of the bass fiddle from 1938 to 1951 is unknown, however, Mace was stationed in France awaiting deployment to Korea when he saw the bass fiddle in a dump. It had a broken neck and needed repairs.Mace’s Army buddy, Jim, from working in his father’s cabinet shop at Stafford, Kan., indicated he could repair the“Leeinstrument.founda baseball bat and his friend fashioned a new neck for the bass fiddle and made additional re pairs,” Webb said.

he bass fiddle of Lee Mace, “Grandfather of Country Music in Missouri,” is being displayed at the Missouri State Capitol Museum.

Mace was killed in a plane crash in 1985, but his wife continued the show for more than 20 years.

“As a youngster, Lee remembered going with his family to a friend’s home for musical get-togethers,” Webb said. “Everyone picked, sang, and had a grand time.”

“The bass fiddle was used on the first shows and was on stage for the final show,” Webb pointed out.

Mace and his wife, Joyce, were among the first Grand Ole Opry square dancers traveling from coast-to-coast.“In1953,they stopped living out of suitcases and settled down at the Lake of the Ozarks,” Webb said. “They knew that there was a lot of old-time country traditions and flavor that they wanted to preserve.”

Lee and Joyce are actually credited with starting the first live nightly family show in America. Today, it’s known as the popular Branson-style entertainment, ac cording to Webb.

The musical couple started the Ozark Opry, renting a building near Bagnell Dam.

Mace had grown up in a musical home and his mother was an accomplished fiddle player. She taught him how to note the fiddle and the basics of music. Transferring those early music lessons to the bass fiddle, Mace soon formed a band doing USO shows. One such show for the GIs as noted in a letter home had attendance of more than 5,000. It was the only band called back for encores. Upon discharge from the Army, Mace brought the bass fiddle home with him to Missouri.Mace was born in a small town of 74 people on a farm near Brumley.

Affordable ways to make homes more appealing to modern buyers

• Energy-efficient upgrades: Inflation has driven up the cost o f just about everything over the last year-plus, and energy is no exception. So it should come as no surprise that 83 percent of prospec tive home buyers are looking for energy-efficient windows and a ppliances in a home. These features save money and benefit the planet, making them a win-win among buyers.

• Exterior lighting: Drive through a modern suburban neighborhood at night and it won’t take long before you realize the popularity of exterior lighting. And that’s no coincidence, as homeowners everywhere appear to embrace exterior lighting. The NAHB report indicates that exter ior lighting is the most sought-after outdoor feature. The good news for prospective sellers is that exterior lighting is an inexpensive and instant way to transform a property at night. Some solar-powere d lighting along walkways and out side the front door can make a home feel more safe, while some uplighting of large trees in the back yard can produce a sight to behold once the sun goes down.

• Patio: Patio spaces have long been popular, but that populari ty reached new heights during the pandemic. When forced to stay at home for long periods of time, millions of people longed for ways to spend more time outdoors without breaking lockdown rules. Pa tios provide outdoor living spaces, and 82 percent of buyers indicated they wanted a patio with the ir next property.

H

ome trends come and go. Today’s must-have items tend to become tomorrow’s outdated features in the blink of anHomeownerseye. who plan to stay in their current homes for years to come needn’t prioritize modern trends over personal preferences. However, ho meowners looking to sell their homes can consider these favored features to increase their properties’ appeal to modern buyers.

• Side-by-side sink: A double or side-by-side sink is among the more affordable features buyers are looking for. At less than $1,000 on average, a side-by-sink is an affordable way to make a home more appealing to modern buyers.

Modern buyers want a lot out of their homes, and sellers can do their best to meet those desires while getting the most money for their properties.

• Separate laundry room: According to the National Association of Home Builders’ 2021 What Home Buyers Really Want report, a separate room dedicated to laundry was the most de sired feature among prospective home buyers. Though it might not inspire the awe of an outdoor living room or floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking a wooded backyard, a laundry room fills a direct and universal need. Perhaps that’s why 87 percent of buyers want a room dedicated to laundry in a home.

(BPT) - Do you want a bath room update that will be stylish and functional for many years to come? More homeowners than ever are renovating using universal design principles that allow these spaces to serve people of varying ages and abilities. This provides numer ous important benefits, includ ing higher levels of safety and increased property value.

A curbless shower is achievable with various drainage points, therefore offering versatility in terms of design. A curbless shower also provides flexibility regarding its location in the room, since the designer and contractor are not tied to placing the drain in a specific spot. Learn more at LRBrands.com/QuickDrain.

An added benefit is that linear drains generally avoid looking institutional, like some wheelchair-friendly bathrooms can. An excellent example of this counter-institutional trend is QuickDrain’s WallDrain, which practically disappears into the wall, offering an ultra-clean and contemporary look.

SECTIONESTATEREAL

Curbless showers are enhanced by linear drains that are installed flush to the flooring, further reducing trip hazards while adding a sleek appearance to the space. With no barrier to cross, the floor more easily ac commodates a freestanding bench, a walker or other mobility aids.

Universal design basics

Universal design creates an environment that is accessible to all people to the greatest extent possible. That means a bathroom will function as well for a child as it does for a senior. Basic principles of uni versal design focus on function ality, and in the bathroom that might mean adding strategic lighting, slip-resistant flooring and features like grab bars.

Universal design is important in bathrooms because these spaces are used every day. Whether your goal is to age in place or you want to make home improvements to improve your property value for a future home, bathrooms with stylish universal design will help you meet your goals.

When function and fashion blend like this in home improvements, it can add significant value to your property. Consider one of the year’s top bathroom design trends: curbless showers with linear drains. This creates a barrier-free experience that is visually appealing, making it ideal for the universal design home.

Keep in mind, you don’t have to sacrifice aesthetics to achieve the functional goals of universal design. More options than ever are available for enhancing the bathroom’s safety and functionality while adding luxurious upgrades that are as useful as they are eye-catching.

Walk-in showers bring comfort and safety to the entire family

A curbless walk-in shower eliminates hazards like curbs or thresholds that can cause people to slip or trip. It’s easier to use whether you walk or utilize a device for assistance, such as a shower wheelchair. Curbless showers also provide an open feel, which makes the space feel larger because visual lines are not disrupted.

Deciding on shower doors is another important aspect of universal design. Glass doors work well for curbless walk-in showers because they open the space and let in light. Another option is to design the space to be completely open as a wet room. Glass dividers are a hybrid option that provide a partition with out a door, but can be easily removed if you want to potentially open the space in the future.

Check for leaks. Every year, homeowners lose a lot of heated (or cooled) air through leaks around areas like windows, doors and chimneys. Inspecting your home for leaks can alert you to spots where you may need to improve caulking, flashing or weather-stripping for a fairly low-cost fix. For a longer-term solution, you may want to consider replacing older, less energy-efficient windows and doors with new ones. For help finding leaks, call your utility company. Many provide energy audits to help customers locate trouble spots in their homes.Bytaking a few of these proactive steps, you can help your family stay cozy and comfortable all winter, while also helping to save energy and protect your budget.

SECTIONESTATEREAL

temperatures begin dropping this fall, you may be wor rying about rising energy costs. Fortunately, there are a number of simple, proactive steps you can take that will save on energy and expenses for your home while also increasing comfort today and well into the future. On top of that, you will also be helping to increase the value of your home with these effective energy-saving measures. Consider these 5 steps to help your home become more energy-efficient.

Insulate your attic. You’re probably aware that heat rises so if your attic is not properly insulated, you may be losing a lot of heated air through your roof every winter. Lack of good attic insulation can also lead to dam age from ice buildup, which is costly to repair. If you own an older home, it’s a good idea to have your attic inspected for insulation before winter sets in. And while older homes are the least likely to have properly insu lated attics, even if you have a newer home it’s worth having a professional check to see if your attic is underinsulated. This can make a big difference when it comes to heating costs.

Top 5 ways to reduce your home energy costs this fall

Go tankless. Looking for a great way to cut down on energy usage and also ensure more consistent access to hot water? Upgrad ing to a tankless water heater will save on energy and expenses compared to a traditional water heater. For example, high-efficiency, condensing tankless water heaters are engineered to replace larger, conventional storage tank-type units, cutting both installation time and costs substantially. The wall-hung technology also has zero footprint in your home, which is a great space saver for smaller homes or if you just need more areas for storage. Tankless water heaters efficiently provide continuous hot water meaning no more cold showers along with big energy savings. In addition, tankless water heaters like the Noritz EZ Se ries also result in reduced carbon emissions and have a longer life expectancy than traditional models. Tank less water heaters use top-mounted water connections, avoiding the need for additional and costly plumbing. Even better, you can often find money-saving rebate programs from your local gas utility for your new tankless water heater that will help cut the installed cost even more.

Make your thermostat programmable. If it’s been a while since you upgraded your thermostat, you may be surprised at what new programmable thermostats can do to help keep your home comfortable while also sav ing on utility bills. The latest models provide much better fine tuning when setting your thermostat, allowing better control of the energy you’re using to heat (or cool) your home. You can make sure you’re not overheating your house when you’re asleep or not at home. Traveling or on vacation? New smart thermostats allow you to adjust your home’s thermostat controls remotely, using your phone or another electronic device.

Give your furnace or boiler a checkup. Get in the habit of having your furnace or boiler professionally tuned up and cleaned at least once a year, ideally just before the weather starts turning colder. Just as you perform regular maintenance on your vehicle, make sure your entire HVAC system is in top condition — and replace your furnace filter at least every 90 days to help your HVAC system run more efficiently. This will reduce your utility bills over time, while keeping you and your family warmer.

The kitchen is another space where wellness improvements can benefit the whole family. From stylish, ergo nomic chairs to strategic lighting that features task and ambient lights, there are many improvements that can enhance your health.

If these points resonate with you, consider how wellness design can be incorporated into your home. Won dering where to start? The kitchen and the bathroom are two primary spaces that provide ample opportunity for making improvements that not only provide an updated aesthetic, but also support overall well-being through functionality and health-focused enhancements.

2. Expectations for home and work have changed dramatically, thanks to the increase in remote work and hybrid schedules. Homes need to become workplaces, and now, workplaces need to become more like home.

3. Designing for well-being isn’t just about the now. It’s increasingly about understanding long-term needs. With more homeowners looking to age in place, homes need to stay beautiful and usable for evolving needs.

For example, every aspect of the Purewash bidet seat was designed with hygiene in mind, including the antibacterial seat, anti-bacterial wand and self-cleaning nozzles, so you can feel confident in your clean every time you use the bathroom. Plus, the quiet-close seat is a nice feature, especially for evening bathroom visits.

Another important wellness aspect of the bathroom may not be quite as glamorous as the shower, but it is equally important when it comes to your health: the toilet. You can easily enhance your existing toilet with a new bidet seat that helps keep you clean when it really counts.

How wellness is driving all things home improvement

One basic update that can benefit you for years to come is replacing your existing faucet with one that blends function, fashion and health. For instance, the Tone faucet has clean lines and a soft teardrop base, offering a fresh take on mid-century modern style. The touchless on/off feature limits the spread of germs, and the threefunction pull-down sprayhead gives you options for any cleaning needs.

(BPT) - When you think about your health, eating well, exercis ing regularly and getting adequate sleep likely come to mind. What you may not realize is the dramatic influence your spaces have on your overall well-being, mentally and physically. This means for good health, you need to take a closer look at your home.

With most people spending more time at home than ever before, this becomes that much more important. This realization has inspired homeowners to make thoughtful updates that not only enhance their home, but also support the wellness of the body and mind of everyone who lives there.

Three big ideas are driving wellness home design: 1. Spaces have a profound impact on health. The light ing, air quality, materials, layout and countless other factors influence people on physical, mental and emotional levels. These considerations should drive a project from concept to completion.

“Our health and happiness are the most precious things that we can take care of. You couple that with your biggest investment outside of yourself, which is your home, and those two are intrinsically linked,” said Erin Lilly, manager, Design Studio, Kohler.

I have been sewing for 65 years. My mother taught me the value of natural fabrics, cotton, linen, wool and silk. My paternal ancestors were leather artisans.

I live in Lebanon and discovered the Lake Area Fiber Guild couple of years ago. I have done some type art, including fiber arts my whole life. I enjoy quilting and mak ing quilt wall hangings. Last year I started mak ing handfelted art pieces. With these I won several awards at the Art Rolla art events. My latest project is Junk Journals which are fun and very unique..and great for gift giving. I like exploring flea markets and sales for unusual embellishments.

I enjoy the diversity in our fiber guild and find inspiration from the members. I am learning to spin the fiber from my first two alpacas. Weaving and em broidery round out my fabric creations.

QuiltEVENTShow to honor veterans

Quilts of Valor is a national organization with a mission “to cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor.” The quilts need to meet certain requirements and are registered with the organization. The guild started presenting these labors of love in 2017 and has been presenting about eight quilts per year in a ceremony held in November (except in 2020 due to COVID).
