VACATION NEWS 11

DAY TRIP by Vicki Wood, newsroom@lakesunonline.com

Backroading, Pioneer Style Visit an Amish settlement and a look back at America’s best loved stories

W

e begin with Seymour, Missouri, thanks to a tip from a beloved in-law who lives in southeastern Webster County raving about the food served at The Little Farm Store. With no prearrangement, we arrived there to find her standing at the coffee bar, what a great surprise! The Little Farm Store was holding a frozen custard festival, hosting craft, produce, and jam and syrup vendors under big tents. The store sells locally produced goods, most items made with all natural ingredients, or organically grown and raised. For the town of Seymour, handcrafted arts are showcased by the business, and today’s festival was being managed by the former executive director of the Seymour Area Arts Council. Regular events centering around vintage and prairie lifestyle are held on the grounds, with a focus on farm to fork cuisine. It’s an important industry in rural Webster County and not unusual to see folks wearing floor length skirts and wide brimmed farming hats. My in-law informed me it is “prairie-style,” a lifestyle choice, not religion. It means those choose to live as close to the land as possible, and grow their own food, or source as locally as possible, preferably from their neighbors. Missouri’s largest Old Order Amish settlement at Seymour could be an influencing factor. The Little Farm Store is stocked with their own fresh dairy which is located 10 miles down Highway 60. At today’s festival, Lulu Bell was the star, a brown jersey cow who is one of many that produce local raw milk for the store and the creation of their own frozen custard brand, Lulu’s Frozen Custard. After petting Lulu Bell, who was greeting visitors outside the store, a sample of her creamy custard was in order, and one can literally taste the sweet, tang of field clover in the frozen treat, lending a honey like note. The Little Farm Store has a full menu available at the coffee bar, with counter service. Locally raised, pasture fed beef is served in a variety of hamburger choices. The crepes are life changing, and only available on Saturdays. A return trip has already been planned to eat more crepes. Today, we were served a savory crepe, with locally raised pork sausage, eggs, and dairy, and it really makes a difference in quality! The Little Farm Store’s mission is to source as much from their own farm and neighbors as possible. Pleasant Valley Farm was the beginning of their clean food venture, and is now partnered with 15 neighboring farms. Their special events honor the land and serve guests tasting dinners from their combined efforts. Ten miles from Seymour, Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Company can be found down some rambling country roads near Mansfield. Baker Creek’s Pioneer Village is currently closed due to COVID, but their online business and seed banks remain open, with one employee reporting business is booming. Not venturing past the front gate, the reproduction Pioneer Village is home to exotic birds and perfectly manicured flower and vegetable beds lining up with the surrounding creek nestling the Ozark hills. Jere and Emilee Gettle purchased the original 1800s Rippee family homestead, one of the oldest reported homesteads in the region, and began building the Pioneer Village in 2007. It includes the seed store, vegan restaurant, speaker barn, an old-time mercantile, herbal apothecary, a natural bakery and blacksmith shop, two music barns, a Western jail, a native rock oven, a windmill, seed warehouses, and many breeds of historic poultry and livestock. As the online seed business is humming along, we hope to find the Pioneer Village open upon our next visit for one of their many free events. Some of America’s best loved stories were written at a small farm in Mansfield, located only a few minutes from Baker Creek. The farm was a step up for Laura Ingalls Wilder and her husband Almonzo from their log cabin homestead in Minnesota. Still standing beautiful on top of a hill, the stark white farmhouse is open to the public for tours where Ingalls VACATION NEWS

DAY TRIP Wilder wrote the timelessly popular Little House on the Prairie series of books that were later turned into a 1970s hit television series. Laura, Almonzo, and their daughter Rose moved to Mansfield in 1894 and settled the 40 acre Rocky Ridge Farm, purchased with 100 dollars that they had hidden away on a six-week trek across the Midwest. Fires destroyed their South Dakota home prompting them to move to Missouri. The farmhouse is a combination of the original log cabin that the family lived in their first winter at Rocky Ridge. The next year they transferred the log home up to the project that would become the farmhouse, with the cabin remains becoming the farmhouse’s kitchen. Almonzo built the structure himself, hefting rock from the property to form the fireplace, and sourcing other materials off of the land. Little Rose grew up there and left Mansfield in pursuit of her own successful writing career. When she returned in 1928, she commissioned a rock sided house with modern amenities as a gift for Laura and Almonzo. At 65 years old, and with the encouragement of Rose, Laura penned the first four Little House books in their new rock home. They lived there until 1936, when they chose to move back into the farmhouse, where the remainder of the series was written. There is a walking trail through the woods that connects the two houses when one visits the farm. The farmhouse has Laura’s furniture on display, nicely restored, a beautiful collection of vintage sofas and writing tables. The home also has some of Almonzo’s fine woodwork and tools on display,

Golfing in the era of social distancing

G

olfing in the era of social distancing may not be quite the same as it was prior to the outbreak of COVID19, but golfers can still have fun as they hit the links. That’s especially true when they take steps to understand just what it means to golf while social distancing prior to teeing off. • Assess your personal health before going to the golf course. Golf attracts athletes from all age groups, including some that are more vulnerable to COVID-19 than others. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, age is a risk factor for COVID-19, as older adults are more vulnerable to severe illness if they are infected with the virus than younger adults. Social distancing requires a collective effort on the part of everyone to keep vulnerable people safe, and golfers are no exception. Golfers young and old who are under the weather or experiencing even mild symptoms of COVID-19 should avoid golf courses until they feel better. In addition, young golfers can choose tee times when they’re less likely to come into contact with older golfers. Early morning tee times tend to be popular among older golfers, but speak with staff at the course to see if they have rules in place to safeguard older golfers. If they do, respect those rules. If they don’t, work with staff to choose a tee time when you’re less likely to be around older golfers.

• Disinfect clubs before or after playing. Disinfecting clubs and other equipment before and after playing is a simple measure that can reduce golfers’ risk of getting the virus or spreading it if they have it but are asymptomatic. Simply wipe down clubs and other equipment with disinfectant or an alcohol-based cleanser that is at least 60 percent alcohol. If playing with a friend, resist the urge to share clubs, no matter how tempting it may be to take your playing partner’s new driver for a spin on the first hole. • Refuse valet service. Many courses have temporarily stopped offering valet services to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Golfers who visit a club that is not taking such precautions can opt to refuse the service. Doing so decreases the risk of getting or spreading the virus by limiting the number of people with whom you come into direct contact. • Pack supplies. Contact the course in advance to determine if the dining room is open and if the course is providing hand sanitizer at each tee. At-risk golfers may want to skip dining at the course after their round is over, opting to pack their own lunch or eat when they arrive home after playing. If the course is not offering hand sanitizer at each hole, pack your own as an extra precaution. Article by MetroCreative

T

he best work of local amateur photographers went on display last week when the Lake Arts Council, in cooperation with the Lake Area Camera Club, posted PhotoQuest 2020 on YouTube. Links to the show are on www.artsatthelake.com and the Lake Arts Council Facebook page. Local professional photographer Brad Glidewell judged the contest, selecting 42 photos in five categories for recognition. Best of Show honors went to Phil Wahlbrink, with first place honors for Rebecca Limback, Gary Fern, Raymond Huddleston, and Phil Wahlbrink. Seconds went to Willis Hoyt, Jennifer Wilcockson, Gary Fern, Phil Wahlbrink, and Bob McLuckie. Third place winners were David Campanini, Janet Loesch, Carol Gamm Smith, Gary Fern, Phil Wahlbrink, Jennifer Wilcockson, Raymond Huddleston, Bob McLuckie, Janet Loesch, Cheryll Vickers, and Duane Limback. Honorable mention awards rounded out the awards: Willis Hoyt, Gary Fern, Janet Loesh, Sandy Sinclair, Cheryll Vickers, Carol Gamm Smith, Rachelle Guess, Phil Wahlbrink, Jennifer Wilcockson, and Marletta Short. Viewers of the video are encouraged to pause the program whenever they wish to examine the photos more closely. They can also improve their experience by using the “full screen” option. While obviously not as rewarding as seeing the program in person, the Lake Arts Council, working with the Missouri Arts Council, is taking steps to make the exhibit available to the greatest number of viewers in the safest possible manner. Future programs will also be on-line, but some programs will return to live presentation (with the fullest possible safety measures for the convenience and confidence of the audiences and performers). Patrons can review the Lake Arts protective measures and plans for all programs and office visits. Patrons who wish to purchase photos can contact the Arts Council office at 573-964-6366 to be put in contact with the photographers. The show will remain available until at least September 30.

22 VACATION NEWS

September 18-October 1, 2020

ON THE COVER by Dan Field

T

he sometimes-dark CLOVID-19 cloud that has cast some unwelcome shadows on our lives seems to have an unexpected silver lining. We began shuttering ourselves inside about mid-March and braced for what soothsayers said would be a near-economic collapse and a national health catastrophe. It became known as a pandemic. Suddenly, though, there was a flicker of hope as business in the Lake area began to show signs of rebirth. Phones at real estate companies, at brick-and-mortar businesses and at marine dealers began to ring. After a brief furlough of some employees, the boat business at the Lake was not only alive but it was alive and well. “All dealers/marinas and other marine industry members are experiencing a great year,” Lake of the Ozarks Marine Dealers Association Director Mike Kenegy said. “All are reporting to me excellent sales of new boats, used and brokered boats this year. Marine accessories such as lifts, docks, etc., are also reporting a great year for sales.” As one would expect, service work in all areas are also experiencing increased demand, Kenegy added. Dale Law, general manager at MarineMax Lake of the Ozarks, has had similar experiences. After a decline in service calls early in the COVID weeks, the phone began to ring from people wanting to not only de-winterize their boats but also put new boats in their docks. Now, sales and service are booming. General Manager Dale “April, May and June have been record-breaking months for our sales department, Law in an Avaira AV36. He says April, and for MarineMax nationwide,” Law noted. “Fortunately for us, COVID has resulted in May and June have been record-breakan increase in boat sales.” ing months for their sales department, and for MarineMax nationwide. MarineMax has promoted boating as an “Endless Staycation: Escape to your own floating resort every weekend.” People find boating a great way to have fun while social distancing with their family, Law noted. Boating is a great way to escape from the city and the many stresses COVID has created. People are staying closer to home and the Lake area continues to be a great destination for residents of Missouri and bordering states. Boating has become a great substitute activity for families who were unable to participate in organized sports this summer. “We find it very exciting that this summer we have been able to ‘deliver the boating dream’ to many first-time boat buyers,” Law said. Inventory has been somewhat of a challenge for MarineMax and other dealers with the increased demand and a shutdown by manufacturers earlier this spring. But MarineMax shares inventory with 59 MarineMax stores nationwide and currently has 1,000 new, pre-owned and brokered boats available for sale. With affordable fuel prices, an early start to the boating season, and an increase in the number of people boating, fuel sales have been great as well, Law said. The dealer has also seen record-breaking months with the sales of boating accessories. With photos and videos available online for all dealers, the Internet continues to drive boat sales. From the comfort of their home, shoppers can easily explore all models that are available at stores. Early last year MarineMax started offering virtual boat shows allowing shoppers to explore new models, participate in webinars and take advantage of special promotions all from their computer. What Changed

The plunge of the stock market in early spring sent shockwaves through most of us. It was 2008-09 all over again, we feared. “At the beginning of April when the stock market took a hit, we all panicked!” Trevor Gardner, sales consultant at Premier 54 in Osage Beach said. “But then all of a sudden the phones started ringing, online inquiries started piling up and boats were selling like crazy. The weekends in April felt like typical June weekends and it hasn’t stopped since.” It seems that everyone wanted to get out of the city to stay at their Lake home in order to isolate. A sentiment shared in nearly all segments of the economy at the Lake. September 18-October 1, 2020

VACATION NEWS 23

ON THE COVER “Many of my customers told me that instead of taking their typical family vacations, they’ve spent that money on a down payment for a boat,” Gardner said. “Along with boosting boat sales, it’s helped all Lake-area businesses. Plus, the international attention Lake of the Ozarks got on Memorial Day Weekend, good or bad, really put us in the spotlight. We all acknowledge that it’s a bittersweet situation, though.” As grocery and discount store inventories began to shrink, as some shelves became nearly bare of some items, the boating manufacturing industry took a hit as well. Most of the supply chains are backed up, Gardner agreed. The Chaparral plant shut down for a few weeks at the same time that demand spiked, so it threw the balance of inventory way off. Once the manufacturers opened back up, they had to make the boat show orders a priority over in-stock orders. “We’re now getting two or three units per week, some of which already have deposits. We currently have around 50 boats on order,” he said. And not surprisingly, another significant profit center for marine dealers — gas dock sales – are doing well. “Just like everything else, fuel sales and service revenue are way up!” he noted. “Add to that, there are more boats out on the water during the weekdays than ever before.” Mirroring others in the boat industry, Premier 54 followed Missouri’s social distancing directives, limited the number of people in its businesses and changed its approach to customers. “As sales people, we always want that handshake during any kind of deal being made, so we’re asking customers if that’s what they’re doing. We’ve even done business and paperwork outside on the tailgates of our trucks with customers that want to be extra cautious,” Gardner smiled. Like other boat dealers, Premier 54 has been offering virtual tours of new and used boats via FaceTime or live streaming, uploading videos to YouTube, and other types of online communication tools.

Big Thunder Marine of Lake Ozark has announced a new location at PGA Marina in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., with a focus on Fountain Center Consoles. “Big Thunder has done a great job representing Iconic Marine Group (parent company of Fountain) at Lake of the Ozarks, I’m excited for what they can do on the East Coast of Florida,” says Fred Ross, owner of Iconic Marine Group. Big Thunder is staffed in Florida by Tim McNutly in sales and Randy Patterson in service. Both local Palm Beach area residents have been in the marine business for many years, with a focus on the overall customer experience. Fountain Center Consoles, along with the new Donzi 41GTZ and Donzi Classics, will be in stock at the very unique location of PGA Marina. “There really isn’t anything like PGA Marina and the amazing location, and I’m pleased we are able to represent Fountain for the East Coast of Florida,” says Jeremy Anderson, general manager of Big Thunder Marine. Also in the news at the Lake is the purchase of Advantage Marine LOTO in Sunrise Beach by Premier 54 in Osage Beach. Advantage Marine began as Wilbus Marine in 1962 built by Bud and Peg Sharp. Its bright yellow gas dock, Bud’s dry sense of humor, and the big white German Shepherd dogs are included in the stories of many long-time boaters at Lake of the Ozarks. In 2016, Premier 54 completed an expansion into the Table Rock Lake market with a second location in Branson West.

Growth and Expansion

The health of the economy can be partially gauged by the expansion of local businesses. Two local boating companies have taken significant steps recently to establish themselves both locally and nationally.

Resolve to make better choices.

OUTDOORS

Buy native trees and shrubs

N

eed trees and shrubs for your landscape? Go native with the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC). Native trees and shrubs can help improve wildlife habitat and soil and water conservation while also improving the appearance and value of private property. MDC’s George O. White State Forest Nursery near Licking offers a variety of low-cost native tree and shrub seedlings for reforestation, windbreaks, erosion control, wildlife food and cover, and other purposes. The nursery provides mainly one-year-old, bare-root seedlings with sizes varying by species. Seedlings varieties include: pine, bald cypress, cottonwood, black walnut, hickory, oak, pecan, persimmon, river birch, maple, willow, sycamore, blackberry, beautyberry, buttonbush, deciduous holly, hazelnut, redbud, ninebark, spicebush, elderberry, sumac, wild plum, witch hazel, and others. Seedlings are available in bundles of 10 or increments of 25 per species. Prices range from 22 – 90 cents per seedling. Sales tax of 6.1 percent will be added to orders unless tax exempt. There is an $8 handling charge for each order. Receive a 15% discount up to $20 off seedling orders with a Heritage Card, Permit Card, or Conservation ID Number. The nursery grows millions of seedlings each year,

September 18-October 1, 2020

but some species are very popular and sell out quickly. Occasionally the seedlings succumb to uncooperative weather or hungry wildlife, despite the nursery staff’s best efforts. “We had some late season cold weather this year, with nighttime lows in the 20s. Staff stayed up several nights in a row running the irrigation to keep the plants from freezing, but we still lost some. The hardest hit was a popular choice, the flowering dogwood,” said MDC Nursery Supervisor Mike Fiaoni. “I would encourage people not to wait when placing their orders.” Fiaoni said that even if a species is listed as sold out, customers can still place an order for them. Sometimes orders get cancelled, freeing up inventory. Customers won’t be charged for seedlings unless they are available to ship. Learn more and place orders through MDC’s “20202021 Seedling Order Form.” Find it in the September issue of the Missouri Conservationist, at MDC regional offices and nature centers, online at mdc.mo.gov/seedlings, or by contacting the State Forest Nursery at 573674-3229 or StateForestNursery@mdc.mo.gov. Place orders now through April 15, 2021. Orders will be shipped or can be picked up at the nursery near Licking from February through May.

MUSIC compiled by Charis Patires, cpatires@lakemediaonine.com

A Country music superstar

L

eona Williams has toured with some of the biggest names in Country music. If you are a Country music fan, you are familiar with her work. Originally from Vienna, Mo., Leona grew up in a big family. Her mother played the piano in church while her dad played the fiddle. Some of her seven brothers and four sisters were also musically inclined. “We had a lot of front porch music,” she said. When Leona was a teenager she had a radio show in Jefferson City called “Leona Sings,” and later moved to St. Louis where she got married and performed in a band. Her career got a jumpstart when she met Loretta Lynn, who was just starting out in the business. Years later Loretta fulfilled a promise to help Leona when she made it big. She called Leona, asked her to move to Nashville, and for about a year they traveled and toured together. Leona became a recognizable name in the country music industry and signed her first record deal. She started recording albums and traveling all over the world. She fondly remembers entertaining service men in the Far East. Leona performed on the Grand Ole Opry, for some of the biggest shows on television, and toured all over teaming up with stars including Merle Haggard, Gene Watson, Vince Gill, Connie Smith, George Jones and many others. Some of her most popular songs include “Once More,” “Yes Ma’am, He Found Me In A Honky Tonk,” “When I Stop Dreaming” and “Melted Down Memories.”

MUSIC Leona has been inducted into the Missouri Country Music Hall of Fame, the Country Music Association of Texas Hall of Fame, the North American Country Music Hall of Fame, and the Mobile Alabama Country Music Hall of Fame. Today, she owns a publishing company, Leona Williams Music, and lives in Kansas City. Before COVID hit, she was doing two or three shows a week and still looks forward to getting in front of an audience. She often performs with her son Ron Williams who is also an accomplished singer and songwriter. Both will be headlining the Classic Country Jamboree benefit October 18 at the Lodge of Four Seasons. For more information and to purchase her music, go to www. music.leonawilliams.com. About the Classic Country Jamboree

The Genuine Country Music Association (GCMA) will host its eighth annual Classic Country Jamboree benefit at 2 p.m. Oct. 18 in the Exhibition Center at Lodge of Four Seasons. Doors open at 1 p.m. to the 20,000 square-foot exhibition center that will allow attendees space for social distancing. Please wear a mask if desired. A blockbuster of talented entertainers and the Board of Directors Band will perform a variety of traditional country music. The event will raise scholarship funds for students attending State Fair Community College-Lake of the Ozarks and for Lake of the Ozarks Soccer Association. Last year the benefit raised $17,000 for SFCC’s Lake of the Ozarks student scholarships.

In addition to headliner Leona Williams, returning are Dennis Stroughmatt, fiddler extraordinaire, singer, recording artist; Alicia Farrell Lange, a Lake of the Ozarks native who is a demo singer and back-up vocalist in Nashville; J.R. Love, a talented country and gospel singer from St. Louis area; and The Board of Directors Band, with Jim Phinney on rhythm guitar, Elijah Chastain on lead guitar, Jimmy Willis on drums, Darrell Cummings on steel guitar, and John Farrell on bass. Bill (Goofer) Atterberry, singer and comedian, returns this year guaranteeing everyone a good laugh. Special guest is Monte Davidson who was well known at the “Wild Times” at Lodge of Four Seasons along with his pet bull, Gomer. Another special guest is Frank Warmbrodt, a favorite among traditional country music fans and a well-known singer at Steel Guitar Shows across the country. Ken Kinzie with KRMS radio station and John Farrell will emcee the event. A dance floor, concessions and a “bucket raffle” table with several exclusive items will be available. Raffle tickets will be a $1 donation per ticket. A live auction will be held for a week’s stay in a condo in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
