GOLF by MetroCreative

M

Golf for beginners

illions of people hit the links to play golf recreationally, and many young stars of the game are inspiring others to try their hand at this difficult sport. In its “U.S. Golf Economy Report,” released in 2018, WE ARE GOLF, a coalition of golf’s governing bodies, found there was a 20 percent increase in junior golf participation in the five years between 2011 and 2016. Plus, there were 2.5 million golfers who played for the first time in 2016, up from 1.5 million in 2011. Even more exciting for the industry is non-golfers interested in playing golf doubled to 12.8 million. There has never been a better time to play golf. However, to the uninitiated, golf can be complicated. There are many different rules and all sorts of equipment to learn and lingo to follow. In fact, the experts at Golf Digest say that some people can be scared off even before they hit the green. Fortunately, all it takes is a little research to get started on learning about and ultimately embracing the game of golf. Here are six ways to get started. 1. Start off on a practice range and not on the golf course. The range is a great place to acclimate oneself to the game and practice your swings. 2. Hook up with someNovember 4 - December 1, 2022

one who can show you the ropes. Going it alone can tame feelings of embarrassment from being new to the game. However, having someone in your corner guiding you can make it easier to learn and love the game. Work with a local golf pro or enlist the help of a friend or family member with some golfing experience. 3. Learn all you can about the clubs, including which kinds are used for various types of shots. While a golfer is allowed to carry as many as 14 clubs in a bag, you will not need that many when first starting out, nor do you have to invest thousands of dollars in a set of clubs. It’s possible to find used clubs online if you want to try the sport before committing. 4. Lean toward more loft when selecting clubs. Look for drivers that have at least 10 degrees of loft and fairway woods that start at 17 degrees, offers Golf Digest.

This will make it easier for beginners to get the ball into the air and can reduce

sidespin so shots fly more straight. 5. Pay attention to short shots as well as the long ones. Spend as much time practicing with wedges and the putter as the driver to really tighten up all of your shots. 6. Learn the proper grip and stance by working with a coach. Invest in a glove to avoid callused hands, as you’ll be spending significant time practicing. With these tips, novice golfers can get on the road to developing a great golf game relatively quickly.

Thanksgiving and Christmas kitchen towels with fun sayings and designs are plentiful. Towels pair nicely with a favorite bottle of wine or enhances any gift basket. The “reason for the season,” the birth of baby Jesus, can easily be found in a nice selection of nativity sets and ornaments, including fabrics ones for children to enjoy playing with. Dazzling with swirling glitter within water spinners are holiday scenes in miniature. Their interior lights brighten up any gift recipient’s face as well as the home or office. Most lanterns are on timers to come on and go off each evening at the same time. The very popular soft quilts and velvety throws come in over-sized sizes and some with a feet pocket. The store has a variety of Made in the USA items including holiday scent sachets, candles and home sprays, as well as warm Aspen Mulling Spiced Cider — a holiday staple to serve at parties and on cool nights curled up at home. Customers truly look forward to coming in to decorate their homes with the large holiday flags with matching door decor, doormats, mailbox wraps and yard stakes. Some are made in Missouri. Several events are being held. On Nov. 5, Kansas City-based Lana Stenner will be giving demonstrations, sharing recipes and signing her new book “The Grace Filled Homestead, Lessons I’ve Learned about Faith, Family and the Farm” from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. On Nov. 12, Lake local Charlie O’Neill will be sharing her skillfully sewn items and line of “Wollies” to keep you and yours

SHOPPING warm with her handcrafted mittens, scarves, hats and impressive purses. Country Crossroad’s Traditional Christmas Open House is Nov. 19 with homemade refreshments, drawings and specials. Don’t miss Shop Small Saturday, always held the last Saturday in November with fun surprises planned store-wide. December may bring live carolers bellowing out Christmas cheer. Feel free to sing along while shopping and get caught up in the holiday spirit. A gaming Saturday is in the works, too. Go to Country Crossroads on Facebook or online for more details. Free gift bagging with coordinating tissue and ribbons is available for most gifts. Country Crossroads began in Osage Beach in 1989 in Palisades Village and a second store, Crossroads II, was located in the Stonecrest Mall. The stores were expanded and moved in 2013 to the Yankee Peddler building next to Lake Regional Hospital on Osage Beach Parkway where they are located today. “Our shop may have opened only 34 years ago but retailing has been in our family for six generations in Kansas,” Selynn said. “We are a family owned and operated business that values family and its many blessings. We thankfully work very well together knowing what needs to be done often without asking.” Staff takes time to make certain every item sold is in perfect condition before going on display. From the lights to seams in clothing, attention to detail is what sets Country Crossroads apart. “We are truly honored with our customers, generations now, that return again and again and become valued friends,” Selynn said. “We are thankfully every day we welcome folks in by calling them by name and meet and greet new friends with smiles to help make happy hearts and homes.” Store info

DAY TRIP by Vicki Wood

Missouri oddities D

riving down the roadways of Missouri can be a living history lesson. Older highways, like vestiges of Route 66, hold some of the best oddities from the 1930s through the 1960s. There is an air of creepiness that pairs with the odd. This month we are visiting places that are not paranormal, but rather give you real life chills. Most will have a historical significance attached. Giant things are a little unnerving. They were merely created as advertising campaigns. The enormity makes us feel small and monitored. There are still quite a few of these behemoths smiling, waving and watching around the state, but they are becoming scarce. At Martin City, there is a great big steer on a roof at Jess & Jim’s Steakhouse. He’s fiberglass instead of tin. The steakhouse has been in business since 1957. Jess & Jim’s has been ranked one of the best steakhouses in the United States. So, forget what the scary cow on the roof looks like, it’s going to be delicious. The old-school menu is right at home on a very historic route of Kansas City in the Martin City suburb. The original building was wrecked by a tornado in May 1957. They reopened soon after at their current location of 517 E. 135th Street. A writer for Playboy Magazine visited in the 1970s and declared it the best steak in the world. A filet steak is still only $14.99. This is the vintage type of place worthy of the cow on the roof declaring a throwback to an era of big beef in Kansas City. It’s a hardy menu of beef with a lobster tail or some blue cheese crumbles to accompany the meal. Don’t mind the bovine on top with eyes following you as you enter. Down the highway a few miles is Cleveland where a famous “Muffler Man” is hidden in a private group campground, which, in theory, is where he should stay --hidden. The Muffler Men are large roadside tin advertising schemes of the geniuses who thought it would bring people in by mounting up roadside giants waving at motorists. “Mr.Bendo” creepily waved in Indianapolis, Ind., before he was restored, bought and sold, and moved near Kansas City in 2016. Stone’s Last Resort, at 23610 S Cleveland Avenue in Cleveland, is Mr. Bendo’s new home. Stone’s Last Resort is a private campground, although they are used to showing Mr. Bendo to guests, so just call ahead so you don’t encounter a locked gate. The resort is home to 100 acres of private camping, fishing and hunting, and can be booked for a stay. Across the state is a single day trip destination that is a bit scarier. The Haunted House on Hill Street Wax Museum has a room of Mark Twain’s relatives alongside the

November 4 - December 1, 2022

DAY TRIP famous author; an entire clan standing and staring at visitors. Newly reopened in 2014, an old house greets you with a second-floor view of a skeleton slumped up in the attic window. Most say that the Twain family wax figures are creepier than the actual Halloween terror displays. There are 27 figures in the display with one disembodied head. Created in the 1970s by a wax crafter who also sculpted the Hall of Presidents in Gettysburg, Martin Krewson must have had a bit of Twain’s offbeat sense of humor. Some of the characters in the display are Twain’s real life family members. The others are depictions of characters from his books. Tom Sawyer’s dummy was crafted with real human teeth. The Clemens head is the creepy one, and possibly the most disturbing. The disembodied head with the group of family members is Langdon Clemens, Mark Twain’s son who died young. The idea came from Krewson, the artist. The underlighting of the whole thing is unsettling, making the family of fiction and real members eerily glow. Haunted House on Hill Street Wax Museum is located at 211 Hill Street, Hannibal. Hannibal obviously deserves a day trip of its own, but for this week, lets end like we like to do with a local favorite café for lunch or dinner on your quest to get unnerved this spooky season. The Mark Twain Dinette is the place to eat for a bit of nostalgia. Close in proximity to Iowa means the Maid-Rite Sandwich is a big thing here. For those that don’t know, the Maid-Rite is loose ground beef on a bun, akin to the sloppy joe, but without that kind of sauce. It’s just seasoned ground beef. They’ve been served there since 1942. Foot-long breaded onion rings are uniquely stacked on a plastic pole with a dip reservoir attached. A frosty mug of their in-house brewed root beer is a must-order item. And like these other destinations, The Mark Twain Dinette greets you with an enormous mug of root beer statue on a pole out front. The Mark Twain Dinette is located at 400 N. 3rd Street, Hannibal. *Sources-Roadside America

Fire safety protocols when decorating

D

ecorating the interior and exterior of a home is a beloved holiday season tradition in millions of households. Such decor makes it easy to dive into the festive nature of the season. Fire safety is especially important during a time of year when string lights and potentially dried out trees feature so prominently. These fire safety tips can ensure this holiday season is safe. • Buy the safest lights. It might be tempting to buy the most inexpensive lights, especially given all the extra costs already associated with the holiday season. However, safety should be the utmost priority when buying new lights. Testing laboratories such as CSA, Intertek and UL certify products to ensure they’re safe for use. Products that aren’t certified should be avoided. • Use lights and cords where they’re intended to be used. The packaging on

A V er y S pe ci a l T h an k Yo u ,

lights will indicate if the product is intended to be used indoors or outdoors. It’s vital that individuals decorating their homes with lights pay attention to these labels. Never decorate the exterior of a home with interior lights, and vice versa. Extension cords made for indoors also should not be used outdoors and vice versa. • Be especially careful with candles. Candles should only be burned when adults are in the room and should always be extinguished before leaving the room or going to bed. When burning candles, place them on heat-resistant surfaces that are beyond the reach of curious kids and pets. Never place candles within arm’s length of Christmas trees or houseplants, including poinsettias. • Ask an electrician to inspect your exterior outlets and circuits. Ground fault circuit interruptor (GFCI) outlets

are designed to prevent electric shocks and reduce the risk of electrical fires. Most areas now require new homes be built exclusively with GFCIs, which are recognizable because they feature two buttons between the outlets. But older homes may not be equipped with GFCIs, particularly with exterior outlets. GFCI installation is not an especially expensive job, so homeowners should ask an electrician to inspect their interior and exterior outlets and replace non-GFCIs with GFCIs. • Do not pinch light cords. Stringing lights can be a hassle, but cords should never be pinched in doors or windows or beneath interior and exterior furniture. Doing so increases the risk of damage to the cord, which in turn increases the likelihood of fire.

And as winter approaches, it’s also a good time to make sure that a home’s heating comfort system is in good working order and ready to support indoor air quality. Given that Americans, on average, spend 90% of their time indoors, the air inside a home should not be taken for granted.1 As October is Indoor Air Quality Month2, the following tips can help support indoor air quality, while also helping to boost comfort and conserve energy bills. * Change the furnace air filter: Not only will changing the filter monthly or as directed by the manufacturer reduce stress on HVAC equipment, but a dirty filter may also increase a home’s energy bill and lessen indoor air quality.3 * Don’t overlook the attic: An average home loses about 20% to 30% of the air that moves through the duct system due to leaks, holes and poorly connected ducts.4 In addition to allowing air moving through the ducts to escape, these gaps can reduce energy efficiency and lead to higher energy bills. Such breaches can allow dust and particulates in the attic to infiltrate and circulate throughout the home. * Care for the air: Regular service of a home’s HVAC equipment can help detect problems that may reduce indoor air quality. An Owens Corning AirCare™ contractor can inspect a home’s attic using tools that may suggest a problem with indoor air November 4 - December 1, 2022

7 tips for boosting indoor air quality quality. For example, thermal imaging technology allows the contractor to visually show the homeowner where energy is being lost and areas where pollutants or contaminants may be entering ductwork. * Assure attic ventilation: Ventilation supports the flow of air into and out of the attic space. Balanced intake and outtake vents in the attic along with proper air sealing support effective moisture management throughout the home. * Manage moisture: Activities in the home like cooking and showering can raise humidity levels in the home. Turning on cooking vents and bathroom vents helps draw moisture out of a home’s conditioned space. Beyond creating potential conditions for mold or mildew to grow, allowing moisture to sit on metal surfaces such as ductwork and other HVAC equipment can cause them to rust and corrode. * Insulate unconditioned spaces: The North American Insulation Manufacturers Association has reported that 90% of homes are under-insulated, wasting money, energy and decreasing comfort.5 Adequate levels of insulation can contribute to a more comfortable indoor environment. * Stay alert to signs of a potential problem: Several clues can suggest that a home’s ductwork may be reducing indoor air quality. Signs of a problem may include musty smells, mold or mildew around vents, condensation on HVAC equipment, hot or cold spots throughout the home, and an increase in dust in the indoor environment.

the winter more comfortably

A

s you’ve likely stayed indoors more over the past couple of years, you may have realized there are things about your home that need to be changed or upgraded. Rising heating costs may also have you concerned about the upcoming chilly winter months. With cold temps already here, it’s important to be sure your home is ready - and that your family will stay sufficiently warm and comfortable throughout the coldest time of the year. Follow these tips to help you stay warm, save money - and make your home eco-friendlier. 1. Check for leaks

If your home leaks heated air, it might be straining your HVAC system - and costing you more money to keep your home warm. You may also notice that certain areas of your house are much colder than others. Common culprits for leaks are windows, doors and under-insulated attics. Check windows and doors to see if they need updated weather stripping or repairs to help seal air leaks. You can also improve your attic insulation. Not sure where the problem lies? Most utility companies offer energy audits that can help you find the trouble spots in your home. 2. Arrange for an HVAC tune-up

If it’s been a year or longer since your last HVAC cleaning and tune-up, it’s important to have a professional come out and look at your system. A tune-up can help to prevent future problems, check for safety issues and help keep your heating costs lower. Being proactive about maintaining your HVAC system will help ensure that your family stays warm and comfortable, no matter how low the temperatures go this season. 3. Upgrade your HVAC system

HVAC technology has improved substantially in recent years, so you would likely benefit from upgrading now - before you experience an unexpected failure. When you’re looking to upgrade your HVAC system, ask your contractor for a system using inverter technology like those from LG Electronics. Unlike November 4 - December 1, 2022

conventional systems where the motor technology switches between operating at 100% or being completely turned off - which is very inefficient -systems with inverter technology work to match the heating needs of your home’s environment to consistently maintain comfort levels and maximize efficiency. Another huge advantage? Inverter technology offers the ability to apply zoned and personalized heating and cooling only where you need it - whether the living room, home office or bedrooms. Imagine having the ability to warm your bedroom at night without having to heat the whole house or cool your home gym to 68 degrees while leaving the nursery at 75 degrees. An HVAC system with inverter technology is also quieter, more cost-saving and more energy efficient than a typical HVAC system. When upgrading, choose ENERGY STAR® certified appliances or systems. ENERGY STAR certified systems, such as LG’s systems with inverter technology, can trim up to 30% off your energy bill, and with many states also offering rebates for ENERGY STAR systems and appliances, you can add even more cost savings.

4. Protect outdoor HVAC units

Make sure the components of your HVAC system that are outdoors are well protected from the elements. For example, having a roof over the unit, protective fencing and/or raising the unit to keep it above the snow line are some easy ways you can help your system continue to work well. 5. Invest in a smart thermostat

If you don’t already have one, consider installing a smart thermostat to help you better regulate temps in your home to keep everyone comfortable, while also lowering energy costs. A good smart thermostat can learn your home’s patterns and adjust to your family’s needs, which means, for example, that you won’t be overheating your home when nobody is there. With these tips in mind, you can help ensure that your home will be cozy, comfy and warm, all winter long.

T

he real estate market has been a wild ride in recent years. Sellers have cashed in on record-breaking profits, and buyers have had to compete against many others — sometimes in bidding wars — for a limited number of properties. Once listed, homes are selling fast. As interest rates rise and inventory increases, things are likely to change, though for some it did not come soon enough. Individuals who were lucky enough to find a new home this year may discover they now have little money to outfit those homes. Shoppers with new homeowners on their holiday shopping lists may want to help those loved ones outfit their homes this season. The following are some homerelated gift ideas to get shoppers started. • Video/smart doorbell: Although the smart doorbell market began with only a handful of options, there’s now a bevy of manufacturers who make video and smart home doorbells. These doorbells serve the dual purpose of alerting homeowners to someone at the door, while providing surveillance of the comings and goings outside of the home. Depending on the product, a subscription may be needed to access video history. Doorbells range from $50 to $200 and more depending on features and resolution. • Furniture gift card: There’s a good chance new homeowners will need to furnish new rooms in a home, particularly if they’re coming from an apartment or a smaller place. Many people also like to update furnishings when they move into new places. A gift card to a popular furniture store in the area will provide the head-start new homeowners need to secure sofas, dining sets, lamps, rugs, and more. • Household tool kit: What better way to prepare new homeowners for the do-it-yourself projects and household repairs than with a tool kit? Home improvement retailers often package common tools needed in carrying cases or sets, but shoppers can grab separate items they think will be used and group them together into one gift. Pliers, screwdrivers, wrenches, a level, and measuring tape are good starter tools. • Customized doormat: Give that new home additional curb appeal with a doormat customized with a special message or the new homeowners’ names, such as Welcome to the Smith Home. Other customizeable products include cutting boards and wall plaques. • Programmable thermostat: A programmable or learning thermostat will help new homeowners save on their energy bills. Many thermostats now pair with smart home systems and phones and automatically adjust the temperature as needed to reduce energy consumption. • Linens: A high thread count sheet set or plush Turkish cotton towels may not be something new homeowners think to get for themselves. But these luxurious gifts can make life at home more comfortable. Moving into a new home is an exciting yet expensive endeavor. Carefully curated gifts can tap into what new homeowners need the most.

oods that feed the eye and satisfy the palate are what diners expect from fine dining. After ordering, there’s time for conversation before those plates of food arrive, and quite often, people linger after their last bite. All of that and more is what Wok-N-Roll delivers, one delicious plate at a time. In 2007, when owner and chef Nok Knernschield opened Wok-N-Roll, it was almost a one-woman show. Nok greeted customers, took orders, cooked and served food, then cleaned everything in a tiny space on Bagnell Dam Boulevard. In the intervening 15 years, the restaurant has grown to offer more seating under soft lights glowing against vibrant walls. The kitchen is much larger for better workflow, but Nok still greets newcomers and long-time customers, tosses fresh ingredients into seasoned woks, and monitors the flames as she brings Pad Thai and spicy curries to life. Nok began learning about flavor and kitchens in the family home in Thailand so cooking was a natural career path when she grew old enough to help support her siblings. Working in restaurants, Nok expanded her palate and skills. She learned about Korean and Indian flavorings, and she liked them all. That’s why Wok-N-Roll’s daily specials have international flair. However, Wok-N-Roll consistently offers menu items customers love. One of them is Nok’s Fried Rice, the restaurant’s signature dish and a variation on traditional fried rice. Nok’s is a mountain of golden rice with translucent onion pieces, bright red and green peppers, and a touch of spice under a cilantro garnish. Most important, it is delicious as are Nok’s Thai Dumplings, another tasty appetizer thanks to Nok’s special talents. Determined to offer good nutrition and complex flavors, Nok blends grains of brown rices for menu items such as Masaman Curry. Customers can still request white rice or a single brown rice grain if they prefer. In fact, customers can make special requests, and if the ingredients are on hand and time is available, Nok will deliver on that request. At all times, customers can choose from vegetarian, GMO-free, and gluten-free options. Most customers trust Nok’s tastes and choices. They have been supporting her restaurant since it opened, and as Nok says, people know quality in ingredients and flavors. Nok Knernschield gives credit for her success to her Thai family who initiated her training, but that family has expanded to include the greater Lake community in which Nok has great confidence in spite of challenging days behind and ahead. Nok believes in the Lake’s magnetism. Even as some prices rise, she thinks state residents will travel more right here at home and the Lake season will be among the best. Nok will do what she can to make sure the future is bright for Lake of the Ozarks. She has a long-standing habit of giving back to schools, fire departments, and service projects. They are part of her extended family as is the restaurant staff. Each one pitches in as needed to paint a vibrant square or stripe on the eye-catching art wall, to wait on customers, or brew another pitcher of fresh, steeped tea. One essential team member is absent, however. Nok’s dear husband, Dennis, passed in 2020. The grief was almost insurmountable, and her heart still misses the man with whom she shared more than

RESTAURANT PROFILE three decades of 24/7 togetherness. Her daughter, an attorney in Virginia, helps her carry on with daily communications, but the work Nok and Dennis began in 2007 still calls, still demands, and still provides. Wok-N-Roll is that business, and Nok carries on with his memory held closely in her heart. Diners are the beneficiaries. Wok-N-Roll is a great restaurant for fine dining in a casual atmosphere on the Boulevard.

Christmas on the Square Can Do Challenge collects food for Lamb House

C

hristmas on the Square will be held in Camdenton offering a free and festive way to spend the holidays with family this season. Each year Christmas on the Square is held on the first Saturday in December. Free activities, food, music and a visit with Santa and his helpers is a part of the day. It will be held Dec. 3 from 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Santa arrives at 11:30 a.m. The theme this year is “Reindeer.” On Friday, Dec. 2, a Tree Lighting Ceremony will be held on the courthouse lawn from 5:30-7 p.m. The season of giving is alive and well with the Can Do Challenge. It’s time to “Rein” in and be a “Deer” for the challenge that collects non-perishable items for the Lamb House. Get your business, church or group together and collect items up until the day of Christmas on the Square. A tally of donations is done for those participating in the contest with the winners in each category taking home a traveling trophy to display until next year. The Can Do Challenge is open to anyone that would like to participate in the following categories: Business, Church, or Group/Organization. In 2021 winners were: Save A Lot in Camdenton, Business category; St. Anthony’s Church in Camdenton, Church category; and Kiwanis Club of Camdenton, Group/Organization category. A booth will be set up during Christmas on the Square to take collections. The Lamb House is located in Camdenton and offers a thrift store, food pantry and emergency aid for families in need in the Lake area. They provide food for about 450 families each month. For more information about the CanDo Challenge, call Rhonda Wilkening at 573-286-7945, the Camdenton Chamber of Commerce at 573-346-2227 or Gary Mitchell at the Lamb House at 573346-2168.
