DAY TRIP story and photos by Vicki Wood

Kimmswick Wine Trail

N

ot too far outside the quaint town of Kimmswick, famous for its history on the Mississippi River, Levee High Apple Pie at the Blue Owl Restaurant, and many seasonal festivals, lies a hidden wine trail.  Between Hillsboro and Kimmswick down Highway A at the 135 exit, off of the interstate 55, one will find country roads, leading to small lanes. Those rambling roads open into surprises of estate wineries, one that rivals those in the famous Sonoma and Napa Valleys in California. Villa Antonio Winery

3660 Linhorst Road, Hillsboro This Italian Estate Winery sits on top of a small lake with ducks gliding across still waters, with their heritage Italian grape vineyards surrounding the lake to the east, and a large vineyard sitting high on a glade above the lake. There is a serenity to the Villa Antonio when sitting on their covered pavilions that is helped along by the calming of the smooth wines. A tasting is highly suggested for five dollars, which includes seven varieties of whichever tastes one fancies, from dry to sweet, white to red. Instead of bland tasting crackers, Villa Antonia offers the owner’s homemade biscotti. The tasting is worth getting those biscuits. The tasting also includes a logo wine glass. Upcoming event:  Movies in the Vineyard, Oct. 28th, Hocus Pocus If wine isn’t your thing, walk through the glass doors up the stairs to their microbrewery where food is also served.

12 VACATION NEWS

Above: The Old House Steakhouse is located in a 1770s cabin at LaChance Winery. Below: Stop by any of the wineries for a free tasting. Wild Sun Winery and Brewery

4830 Pioneer Rd, Hillsboro Ten minutes away from Villa Antonio, Wild Sun Winery and Brewery sits on a 10 acre estate with pizza, gourmet Angus burgers, and meat and cheese baskets for enjoying in the outdoor areas. Wild Sun Winery boasts 14 varieties of red and six white wines, along with a brewery featuring 5 in house crafted brews. Wild Sunset Nights Fridays are a regular event hosted at the winery from 6pm to 9pm thru Oct 30th. Then the seasonal events begin at Wild Sun with the approach of Witches, Warlocks,, and Wine on October 29th and Yoga and Wine is Fine on October 31st.

Persimmon Ridge Winery

7272 Sheppard Dr.  Barnhart, Missouri 63012 15 minutes down the road from Wild Sun Winery, one will find Persimmon Ridge Winery in the Hillsboro/ Kimmswick area.   Persimmon Ridge is all about focusing on their seven varieties of home grown wine, with Norton being the favorite, and the list rounding out with Persimmon. It’s an unusual offering but makes sense in these parts, due to the overwhelming availability of November 5 - December 2, 2021

DAY TRIP

wild persimmons. Persimmon Ridge Wineries’ beautiful entrance is stunning, and a bit of a shock considering the gravel road and scenery down to this backwoods surprise. The road itself is not inviting. But the winery is, be patient and diligent the mile or so down the gravel to the estate. This is a place locals hang, alot know each other, and a fun place to sit and sip. Heading back to Kimmswick, we tour LaChance Winery, with its location at Kimmswick is a 20 mile drive. Drink lots of water, because you are going to want to visit the covered bridge at Sandy Creek before you go. Sandy Creek State Park is just a few minutes from Persimmon Ridge. It’s one of just a handful of true covered bridges left. The Sandy Creek Covered Bridge State Historic Site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. The park sits on 9.9 acres, but you will spend a lot of time just walking the bridge, photographing it and the surrounding creek, and feeling the sand between your toes on the banks, because it really is sandy. Walking through the antique structure, you can smell the history in the dank boards it’s built out of, but it’s sturdy thanks to a restoration in 1986. 9001 Old Lemay Ferry Rd, Hillsboro, MO 63050

Unique Holiday Gifts

LaChance Winery

6035 2nd Street, Kimmswic Housed inside a pre civil war building in the quaint tourist town of Kimmswick, The LaChance Winery is not only an excellent retail outlet for LaChance Vineyards of DeSoto, it’s a walk back in time. Log homes are not usually this magnificent from the era pre 1900s. It dates to 1770 and is among the oldest structures in town. General Ulysses Grant drank here once when it was a tavern. The winery and restaurant is a more impressive location if you want to impress guests. The wait staff is polished but friendly and helpful. The Catawba melts in your mouth here. Vignoles, Sweet Caboose, and Covered Bridge are must trys and a novelty over other wineries. Dinner is an experience that one must indulge in the autumn months. Lowlights and candlelight in what feels like a log cabin mansion is somewhat cozy with the warming vintages and an excellent steak and seafood. Duck breast with orange reduction and risotto is a meal that you will not mind being so stuffed with that a stroll through Kimmswick’s downtown on a crisp fall evening is an unforgettable trip. Survey shows improvement

A

ccording to the Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) annual wild turkey brood survey for 2021, average turkey production statewide was similar to production at the statewide scale in 2020, but better than statewide production from 2016-2019. MDC’s statewide poultto-hen ratio (PHR)—an index for turkey production—this year was 1.0, which was the same as the 2020 PHR but 11-percent greater than the average production observed during the previous five years (2016-2020). However, when comparing the statewide PHR to the average turkey production observed over the last 10 and 20-years, production in 2021 was below the longterm average. This map shows an index (poult-to-hen ratio or PHR) of Missouri’s wild turkey production Regionally, production by Turkey Productivity Region (TPR). TPRs are counties grouped by similar land cover was relatively consistent composition. Data were obtained during MDC’s 2021 wild turkey brood survey and are comin 2021, with almost every pared to the previous five-year average (2016-2020). The Lindley Breaks Region also How the poult-to-hen ratio is determined saw a nine-percent increase in production, but the most Since 1959, MDC has conducted an annual wild turkey significant improvement was in the Mississippi Lowlands Region where the PHR increased 118-percent from 2020. brood survey where MDC staff and citizen volunteers record the number of hens and recently hatched turkeys, “Because turkey abundance is relatively low in the which are called poults, they see during June, July, and Mississippi Lowlands compared to other parts of the August. These observations are then tallied to determine state, we usually receive the fewest observations from the success of the hatch, which is most often reported this region during the brood survey,” says MDC Wild as a poult-to-hen ratio, or simply the average number of Turkey Biologist Reina Tyl. “Since the production index is calculated from a smaller number of observations, it’s not poults per hen observed during the survey. OUTDOORS that the poult-to-hen ratio is a good measure of nesting success and poult survival. “Each year, thousands of citizens participate in the survey, and we are grateful for their contribution,” Tyl said. “This year during the three-month survey, participants reported sightings of more than 75,000 turkeys, which is a testament to the large number of dedicated volunteers that take time to record and submit their observations.” What drives long-term trends in turkey production

“Since MDC has been collecting information about turkey hatches for over 60 years, we have

been able to monitor longterm trends in production,” explained Tyl. “The last few decades of brood survey data indicate that PHRs have been declining, and the statewide PHR has been at or below 1.0 for the last six years.” Tyl added a lot has changed over the last several decades that could be contributing to the declining trend in productivity. “There have been broad-scale losses of quality nesting and broodrearing habitat, changing spring weather patterns, increasing populations of some nest and poult predators, and declining insect abundance—a critical food source for young poults,” she said.

MDC and University of Missouri launch turkey research project

MDC partnered with the University of Missouri to launch a cooperative research project last year to determine how these different factors are affecting wild turkey nest success and poult survival. “The project also aims to identify the main causes of poult mortality and determine how brood-rearing habitat selection, and the quality of those habitats, affects poult survival,” Tyl noted. “The information gathered from this study will inform management of wild turkeys and turkey habitat in Missouri.” To participate in the annual wild turkey brood

survey, email MDC’s Wild Turkey Management Program at wildturkeymgmt@ mdc.mo.gov with “Wild Turkey Brood Survey” as the subject of the email. Include complete name and mailing address. Muskie fishing heats up as temps cool

Known as the fish of 10,000 casts, musky are not easy to catch.

usky are the apex predator of freshwater fishing. These toothy creatures, which reach lengths of 60 inches and can top out scales over 60 pounds, are not easy to catch, but tangle with one and you’ll know it was worth the effort. While more prevalent in the northern Midwest states, like Wisconsin and Minnesota, musky are caught in lakes and rivers in Missouri, Illinois and Indiana. Fall is one of the best times to catch them as they prepare for winter. Musky are known as the fish of 10,000 casts. This is of course an estimate, but the point is catching a muskie with any type of fishing tackle is no easy task. If you want the reward and excitement of landing one of these solitary predators, you are going to

FISHING have to work for one. So it’s not like anyone can tell you exactly how, where and when to go catch one. Musky roam. You’re going to have to cast a lot, try a lot of different lures, fish different structures, different depths, multiple days, and maybe, just maybe, it’ll all come together for you and across your arms will be draped a fish longer than your leg. Statistics tells us that fishing with a guide drastically cuts down the number of casts you’ll have to throw to land a fish. An Indiana survey of musky guides showed 12 guides operating conducted 2,900 trips in 11 years. That’s an average of 264 trips per year. They boated 300 musky on those trips for an average of 1.14 fish landed per guide trip. I don’t know how many casts you’ll throw in a day, but it won’t be 10,000. The point is, if you want the best chance of landing a muskie hire a guide. Traveling to musky fish is a lot like traveling for a hunt. You are successful if you catch one. These fish don’t swim in every lake and pond like bluegill or bass. You usually have to hit the road to chase them. Here are a few options. There’s nothing like fishing the Northwoods in fall. The Turtle Flambeau area of Wisconsin is a musky fishing destination that has been attracting anglers for generations. For me, there is no better time to be there than now. Throwing big musky baits is a laborious task, but when you hook one, you know you’ve just done something special. Land one and you’ll have a memory to last a lifetime. If you’re into musky fishing down south, Cave Run Lake in Kentucky is a must fish destination. At 7,800 acres, it’s a big body of water, but is small enough to learn given a little time. Numerous guide services operate on Cave Run and all of them will tell you fall is a great time to book a trip. Musky must be 36 inches to keep, but hopefully you’ll strongly consider catch and release. If you’re looking for a specific place on the lake to fish, Musky Bend might be a good place to start. Bass Lake, located in the Dugger Unit of the GreeneSullivan State Forest in southern Indiana, is the largest of all the state forest lakes at 222 acres. The Dugger Unit is a heavily fished section of the forest. DNR researchers found musky to be the third most sought after species in Bass Lake. They are also found in Duck Lake and Black Cat Lake within the forest If you’ve ever had the good fortune to tangle with a “water wolf” then you know Musky aren’t predisposed to kindness. In fact, they’re down right out evil creatures. In my book, this makes them all the more appealing to fish for. Catch one and you’ll likely be hooked for life. See you down trail… For more Driftwood Outdoors, check out the podcast on www.driftwoodoutdoors.com or anywhere podcasts are streamed.

GOLF by Paul Leahy, PGA Golf Pro/Director of Golf at The Oaks

Gifts for the golfer

T

he holidays are sneaking up quickly and if you are struggling to find that perfect gift for the golf enthusiast in your life, let’s take a look at some options that are sure to please. Like many products and goods this year, golf equipment and other golf related items have been in short supply. New clubs are as much as three months out and golf bags are just as tough to get. So what should I be looking for? New clubs are still a viable option, but think out of the box so to speak. Instead of buying new clubs, if you can find them, purchase a gift certificate from your local PGA Professional for custom club fitting. You can always add a little money to the certificate to help with the clubs once fitted or slip in some cash along with it. The benefits of this is they will get custom-

fitted clubs, will be able to order what they want and they will be tailored to their specific swing characteristics. Hopefully, the supply chain will loosen up next spring so products will be readily available. The majority of the Lake’s golf courses have PGA certified club fitters on staff. Osage National Golf Resort and Eldon Golf Club have indoor simulators for off-season fittings so they can be ready for the spring season. Speaking of indoor golf, simulator time is another perfect gift for the golf lover on your list. The LOZ Golf Lounge in Osage Beach opened last winter and simulator time would make a perfect gift. Osage National Resort and the Eldon Golf Club also have simulators to play and challenge

your friends to a round of golf at your favorite course. If you have friends or relatives in St. Louis, Kansas City or other metro areas Top Golf gift cards make the perfect stocking stuffer for that hard to buy for golf enthusiast. Electronics are also popular. Bushnell has their Wingman speaker that also doubles as a GPS yardage device and its magnetic design affixes the unit securely to the cart as you play. There are 36,000

GOLF GUIDE pre-loaded courses, a built-in USB port for charging other devices, removable remote and 10 hour battery life making this a great gift for any golfer. Portable simulators and launch monitors are also all the rage. From the Garmin Approach R10, the Flight Scope Mevo or the Rapsodo mobile launch monitor you can treat that golfer that loves to analyze his game for under $600. The units can be used indoors or out and some even have video capability. Golfers will be able to check their swing speed, launch angle, spin rates and more to take their game to the next level. Check out the features of these portable units and see which one suits your needs. The Oaks at Margaritaville is an authorized dealer for the Rapsodo monitor, so stop in and they can show you all the features. Opti-Shot is another reasonably-priced option for an indoor simulator. Priced at $399 it comes with 18 preloaded courses to play. For the golfer who has room in their house, this will make the perfect gift, and maybe they will invite you over for a game! A GPS Watch also makes a great gift and the Garmin Approach S62 watch has been a popular choice. Starting at $499 this watch has so many features you’ll want to wear it for everyday use so you are never without it when you hit the course. Golf lessons with a PGA Professional make great gifts as well. Purchase one or a series of lessons for that special someone. If you want to learn as well, how about a couples lesson. You can show your spouse you want to join them on the course by giving the gift of a lesson for two. The November 5 - December 2, 2021

best part is that your spouse doesn’t have to teach you! Another unique gift I found is a personalized “A History of Golf” book featuring authentic articles from the New York Times. Personalize the cover with the name of the recipient and it will be the centerpiece of any golfer’s coffee table or man cave. They will have endless hours reliving Bobby Jones Grand Slam, Jack Nicklaus’ 18 majors and the rise of Tiger Woods and much more. If you must be boring and give golf balls this year, customize them. Most companies offer free customization over the holiday season. Imprint them with their name, nickname or a funny saying. Three lines of script is the max so have fun it. A dozen is typically all you have to buy and they will love showing them off to their friend next spring on the course. Be creative, I’ve seen golf balls imprinted with such things as “If found call John Smith and their phone number.” I wonder if any of these balls every got returned. Check with your local golf course. I am sure they would be happy to order them for you. Indoor putting mats have also made a comeback in the last several years. The Perfect Practice Putting Mat is one of those great gift items. Endorsed by PGA Professional Dustin Johnson this product will be a hit in any golfer’s household. Have some fun this holiday season by giving some unique gifts to your golfing friends and family. Hopefully everyone will be able to give gifts inperson this season and be able to ring in 2022 with all your golfing buddies. All the best and will see you on the course next year!

Holiday Bazaar The community is invited to the Osage Family Partnership’s 41st Annual Holiday Bazaar from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, in the middle school gyms at 635 Hwy 42, Osage Beach. Over 100 booths are projected to register and will be offering a variety of handmade crafts, home décor, jewelry, clothes and other specialty holiday items. Attendees can also expect to find items like personalized ornaments, favorited graphic tees, custom tumblers, original art, beautiful woodwork and more. The Osage Family Partnership High School Tribe organizes this shopping extravaganza to raise funds for School of the Osage senior scholarships, teacher grant requests and other student resources. Organizer Stephanie Dehner has helped this event grow over the last four years. “We are really proud of this event and how much it has increased in vendor registration, event attendance and quality of items offered” expressed Dehner. “The bazaar is the perfect way to support local small businesses, the school’s teachers and students while purchasing gifts that you can take home. With supply issues everywhere, it certainly is an opportunity to get your holiday shopping finished with no shipping delays.” The bazaar committee is excited to announce that Santa 24 VACATION NEWS

CONCERT the area how much talent there is at the Lake,” chorale director Tracey Garrett says. About 50 singers make up the chorale each year ranging in age from 30 to over 80 years old. The chorale provides those who love to sing an opportunity to make music with a group of like-minded folks. Concerts are held each fall and spring. Anyone can join the chorale when it comes time to rehearse for the season but it is a commitment, Garrett says. Singers rehearse for once a week for two hours for 10-12 weeks in addition to showing up for the concerts. They usually perform five concerts at venues across the Lake area. Rehearsals alternate between Christ the King Lutheran Church in Lake Ozark and Kent Memorial Lutheran Church in Sunrise Beach. The selection of songs chosen for the Christmas concerts will be a mix of Advent music and some newer songs not everyone may know. The chorale is backed up by two new pianists who sometimes play one piano at the same time which is sure to entertain audiences this holiday season. The Greater Lake Area Chorale dates back to 1962 when a community choir was formed in Eldon. Garrett has been the director since 2019 and has been a member since 2007. Born in Murphysboro, Ill., she holds degrees in flute performance from Illinois Wesleyan University & Southern Methodist

Garrett is a parttime secretary and serves as the Choir Director and Coordinator of Worship and Artistic Ministries for Kent Memorial Lutheran Church. She had been the assistant director of the Lake Area Chorale for several years, and served as the interim director for the spring 2019 concert series before her appointment as director. “It’s the chance to share something I love, something I care deeply about, with people here in the Lake area,” Garrett said. “To be able to keep this group active and performing is such a joy and an honor. The musicians love to sing and love to be able to share music with our communities.” Nancy Witham has been with the chorale for 27 years. She began in 1994 when a friend who was in the chorale persuaded her to join. In all the years of performing, Witham says she only missed one concert season. The 88-yearold Lake area resident is the soprano section leader and plans to stay involved as long as possible. “It’s a great experience and I’ve very thankful I’ve had the opportunity,” she says. Witham started singing in the church choir and has always enjoyed performing. While it’s a commitment, it’s also rewarding and an important program to offer the com-
