Each of the four lessons will focus on a diff erent topic: Lesson 1 – Equipment, casting, and proper fi sh handling Lesson 2 – How to tie a knot and bait a hook Lesson 3 – Five common Missouri fi sh: anatomy, habitat, and lifecycle Lesson 4 – Fishing with lures and fi shing regulations Lessons 1 and 2 will take place on one evening, and lessons 3 and 4 on a second evening. All classes are free, but preregistration is required at mdc.mo.gov/ centralevents. MDC will off er these clinics, 5:30–7:30 p.m., at the following locations: Aug. 31 & Sept. 2 — Credit Union Pond
at MDC Headquarters in Jeff erson City Sept. 7 & 9 — Manito Lake Conservation Area in Tipton Sept. 13 & 15 — Ben Branch Lake Conservation Area in Chamois Sept. 14 & 16 — Marshall Diggs Conservation Area in Wentzville Sept. 20 & 22 — Bass Pro Shops Lake in Columbia Sept. 21 & 23 — Rinquelin Trail Lake Conservation Area in Dixon Sept. 28 & 30 — Veterans Park in Fulton All DNF classes are free for registered participants and MDC will provide all needed fi shing equipment and supplies. Participants should bring their own drinking water, bug repellant, sunglasses, and sunscreen if they wish. To help ensure public health and safety during the COVID-19 pandemic, MDC asks all participants to observe current, local guidelines regarding physical distancing and masking. MDC encourages participants to bring and wear face coverings when appropriate. DNF programs focus primarily on reaching kids 6–15 years of age and emphasize family involvement. All children must be accompanied by an adult and all

participants must preregister for each lesson by visiting mdc.mo.gov/central events. Families now have the option to link their children’s accounts to their own accounts which will streamline the program registration process. Once a group account is setup parents will be able to register their children to an event without having to logoff and login for each individual. This functionality will allow parents register their entire family or select family members to an event at the same time. First, users will log into their account and click “My Group Profi le,” then add family members to their account. Setting up a group account today will make program registration quicker and easier for all MDC programs. For more information about these classes, contact Edwards at Ashley.Edwards@mdc.mo.gov, or (573) 815-7901, ext. 2968. MDC’s Discover Nature – Fishing workshops help instill basic fi shing skills and knowledge that provide children and families fun adventures in Missouri’s outdoors for years to come. BOATING
New law for boaters taking eff ect Joyce L. Miller Vacation News | USA TODAY NETWORK
Dock owners on Lake of the Ozarks will soon have some recourse for unwanted boaters trespassing on their property or anchoring too close. Eff ective Aug. 28, it will become illegal to be within 100 feet of someone else’s dock, tie up to it or block another boat from getting in and out. The bill was drafted to address a longstanding problem on the lake. Unless a dock is deeded a certain way, it is not considered real property, therefore, it was not illegal for someone to go onto another person’s dock, leaving dock owners with no way to stop people from coming onto private docks. The bill changes that, as well as prohibits boats from anchoring within 100 feet of a dock without the owner’s permission. First-time violators will be subject to a ticket for an infraction. Repeat off enders will be subject to a class B misdemeanor. The bill was sponsored by Sen. Justin Brown, R-Rolla. It was the second time the bill had been fi led. Ameren Missouri and the Missouri Highway Patrol testifi ed in favor of the bill. m GETTY IMAGES

Seebold Sports is a machine shop of sorts where Tim imagines and then creates functional reality for the Formula One boats that are raced all over the world. PROVIDED BY DAN FIELD
A labor of love Dan Field Special to Vacation News | USA TODAY NETWORK
The non-descript white metal door echoed shut to fi nd Tim Seebold behind a push broom, sweeping granular cleaning material neatly into a pile in the center of the fl oor. It was hot outside, and the only source of comfort was an oscillating fan. Such is Seebold’s world as the head of Seebold Sports, housed in the end unit of a blocklong metal warehouse that he shares with other labor-intensive businesses on Highway 42 in Kaiser. The building and his shop exude simplicity, but in reality, what is contained within refl ects three generations of powerboat racing including multiple championships spread across those three generations. Seebold Sports is a machine shop of sorts where Tim imagines and then creates functional reality for the Formula One boats that are raced all over the world – all refl ecting his family’s racing legacy. And, he’s not afraid to push a broom. Or change a lightbulb. Or fi x this or that. To say Tim is a hands-on owner-operator is an understatement. Every part, every idea
that comes out of Seebold Sports touches his hands. He may not have manufactured every part, but what he produces there has been born from the necessities pushed by F1 racing. Tim is a world champion boat racer as were his father, Bill (Billy) Jr., his older brother, Mike, and his grandfather, Bill Sr. Their attention to every detail since Bill Sr. started the racing empire 82 years ago is a testament to the success of the family’s endeavors. Bill Seebold Sr., the patriarch of the racing team, built the fi rst boat he raced at the age of 25 and started racing in 1939, 10 years before the start of NASCAR. Bill Jr. (Billy) started racing when he was 11. He was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1999 after winning more than 900 races and 69 world and national titles in his 46-year career. He retired after the 1997 season. He won many of those races over his sons Mike, who started racing at the age 1,3 and Tim, who started at 8 and won his fi rst championship and world record at age 17. Tim now has 37 victories in the Formula One and Champ classes. He has scored 25 of those wins in the ChampBoat series to account for nearly one-third of the trophies awarded since the series was formed in 2000.

BOATING
He has earned 19 North American and World Championships in the Formula 1 Powerboat categories. He won championships in the top series of outboard racing in 1998, 1999, 2002, 2004, 2007, 2015, and 2016. He has fi nished in the top three in series points 19 times in the past 21 seasons and is the only driver in US history to win seven ChampBoat/Formula One titles. But those days of racing for the Seebolds is history. Tim, now 57 and the last in the trio of family racers, retired in 2016 after one of the most successful boat racing careers in history. He ran his last race – and won – in Orange, Texas, a small community in the southeast corner of the state. His retirement came on the 50th anniversary of NGK Spark Plugs, the leading spark plug manufacturer for F1 boats and also the anchor sponsor for Seebold Racing. F1 racing had been declining in popularity and sponsorship support and Tim felt the timing was right. He had won four championships that year and the Golden Anniversary of his team’s sponsor was the perfect opportunity. Since then, Tim has turned his attention to rebuilding the sport and the reputation of the series. NGK recognized the talents of Seebold and the legacy of his family and has stayed with the team. “I felt F1 racing needed somebody to take the sport and move it forward, someone who had the best interest of the sport at heart,” Tim explained. Sponsors can make or break a race team or the sport itself since those best interests can be more focused on money than the health of the sort itself, Tim explained, so he brought major sponsors to the table and partnered with John Schubert starting the NGK Spark Plugs Formula One Powerboat Championship Series. The series is a six-race series featuring races across North American from May through October. Established in 2017 – a year after Seebold retired from racing – the series features weekend-long community events highlighted by 20-pus F1 boats at speeds up to 120 miles per hour. The Lake of the Ozarks got a taste of the action when Seebold organized an F1 race during the annual Lake Race in early June in Lake Ozark. The turnaround between races for F1 boats is
According to the website: “The return of this epic powerboat racing event will be conducted by the prestigious NGK Spark Plugs Formula 1 Powerboat Series, renowned for its heart thumping highhorsepower racing excitement performed by world class international powerboat racing stars! “Many Havasu Classic stars from the past will also be in attendance to revel in the excitement of this highly anticipated racing event, which includes the 50-year rededication of the city’s famous London Bridge. The winningest powerboat driver in history, the legendary Bill Seebold, will host the Racers Reunion driver’s party, pairing Havasu racing legends with vintage race boats of historical Havasu signifi cance, which will also be on display for the fans.” Tim now has 37 victories in the Formula One and Champ classes. PROVIDED BY DAN FIELD
quicker than the off shore boats, so Seebold and his team were able to showcase their lightning-quick boats before and between the off shore races. Tim said he had only four weeks to put the F1 race together for Lake Race, and it worked well thanks in large part to the cooperation of the Missouri State Water Patrol and a host of local supporting sponsors. He verifi ed rumors that F1 racing could become a permanent part of Lake Race every year. “We want to do all we can to make it part of Lake Race and sustain the event so we can build the event,” he said. “Off shore and F1 complement each other both on the water and as part of the Lake Race Street Party on The Strip.” He said the Championship Series is still in a transitional state on all levels, and the backing of sponsorships – locally at the various races and from nationwide corporations – is vital to its success. “We have a lot of partners here at the lake, and most of those are also our friends,” Tim noted. Next on the docket is the Lake Havasu Classic Outboard Championships Oct. 15-17.

Back home Tim is the heart and soul of the NGK Sparkplug Racing Champion Series. He’s the marketing director, the graphic coordinator, the spokesman, the brainchild and the information person. He’s also the hands-on creator of F1 boat parts with a wall of machines and titanium composite molds he uses to transform his visions into reality. Necessity is the mother of invention for Tim. He’s been strapped in the 17-foot boats, powered by Mercury racing outboards. He’s had his share of accidents and failures. He custom makes the F1 boats to fi t the stature of the drivers. He designs and manufactures pieces and parts – sometimes with parts bought online, sometimes with parts made in his shop. It’s a labor of love. “It’s a passion for me. I love it. It’s part of my heritage and something I’ve spent all my life doing,” Tim said. When it is time to step aside for good, he wants to leave not only Seebold Sports but also the Formula Outboard racing in a position that will continue and refl ect the legacy that he and his brother, dad and grandfather built. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is conducting its annual search for a large Christmas tree for use on the governor’s mansion lawn in Jeff erson City. MDC is asking landowners, homeowners, businesses, and communities that may have possible candidate trees to contact the Department. To qualify, the donated tree must be about 40 feet tall and be an eastern red cedar, Norway spruce, or white pine that is fully branched on all sides and accessible by large equipment. The right tree may either be near the end of its life or may need to be removed for other reasons. Once a tree is selected, MDC staff will coordinate the cutting and delivery of the tree to the governor’s mansion at no cost to the owner. The donor will receive a thank-you from the governor and an invitation to the lighting ceremony, which usually occurs the fi rst week of December. “Sometimes there are beautiful evergreens that need to be removed for home expansion, utility work, or they’ve grown too large for the space,” says MDC Community Forestry Coordinator Russell Hinnah. “Having your tree displayed at the governor’s mansion is a great way to share its beauty with thousands of Missourians who visit the mansion during the holidays.” Hinnah asks people to take photos of candidate trees and email them to holidaytrees@mdc.mo.gov. Be sure to include a contact telephone number, location of the tree, and several pictures taken from diff erent angles and distances. Candidate tree nominations can also be submitted by mail to: Missouri Department of Conservation, ATTN: Mansion Christmas Tree, P.O. Box 180, Jeff erson City, MO 65102. All entries must be submitted by Oct 4. Full guidelines are available at mdc.mo.gov/trees-plants/governors-mansion -christmas-tree-search. LAKE FILM FESTIVAL LUNAFEST is coming to Lake of the Ozarks this fall. Seven powerful fi lms are debuting in this fi lm festival featuring fi lms by women, about women. Over the past 20 years, LUNAFEST has celebrated the work of over 170 fi lmmakers and raised over $6 million for women’s causes. The event will be held Sept. 25 at Old Kinderhook Resort. This year, LUNAFEST features an all documentary lineup of seven short fi lms by women fi lmmakers, sharing new perspectives and lighting a fi re in the industry. And for the fi rst time, LUNA has joined forces with Chicken & Egg Pictures to coproduce three of this season’s fi lms. Together, LUNA and Chicken & Egg Pictures are creating a strong community for women in the fi lm industry. The gender disparity in fi lm is real. Women are underrepresented in this medium where the overall percentage of female directors from the past 13 years remains at 4.8 percent. LUNA® Bar has been fi ghting for change for twenty years. The brand has always committed to inspiring women, championing change, and demanding that equality be a right, not an option. SHOW
Fiber artists showcase work The Lake Fiber Arts Festival will be held October 9 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Community Christian Church in Camdenton. The one-day festival will have handmade artwork for sale including textile art, wearables, accessories and home decor; vendor booths off ering fi ber materials, tools and supplies, handdyed yard, roving, books, embellishments and patterns; fi ber demonstrations including spinning and weaving; and unique holiday gifts.
Spotlight on the Artists Diane Crowder retired to the Lake of the Ozarks in 2012, after a 40+ year career as a professor of French and Women”s Studies. She took her fi rst weaving class from a colleague in 1984 and has been an avid weaver ever since. She and her partner bought their lakefront home in Sunrise Beach in 2002 to use as a vacation place, fell in love with the lake, and decided to make it their retirement home. Diane’s looms and her yarn stash take up a lot of room, so they added a great room on the lake side of the house, and half of that space is Diane’s weaving studio. Her giant Toika loom arrived from Finland three years ago, joining another fl oor loom, several smaller looms and two spinning wheels, one of which Diane designed and built from native Ozarks oak. Her studio has many windows for natural light and she looks out on the lake as she weaves. Diane earned certifi cation as a Master Weaver from the national Handweavers Guild of America in 2017, and has participated in many shows in Iowa and Missouri. A kimono she wove was awarded Best in Show at the Missouri Fiber Artists’ Art to Wear exposition in 2017. She is a member of the Lake Area Fiber Artists guild as well as Missouri Fiber Artists. In April this year she took a workshop online that challenged students to use at least 5 yarns from their stash to create a scarf. Diane was inspired by the woods around her house to weave a scarf she calls “Ozarks Spring.” She used a white

Although she was still working full time she managed to contribute many crocheted hats for the 2020 Hat Tree Project. She is one of the members of the charity committee which promotes the LAFA’s charity initiatives which includes the Hat Tree Project, CADV Comfort Items and Chemo Hats. In addition to the items she makes for our various charities, Donna also has items for sale at Flocks, a local yarn shop in Camdenton. Donna will be participating at this year’s Fiber Festival and will have many handmade knitted and crocheted items available for purchase. m
