Volume 24 Issue 2
February 26, 2018
Dear Staff, Since it was announced during the summer that New Hope Housing would be operating the Bailey’s Crossroads Community Shelter, I have been seeking a Senior Program Director. In the interim, with Tonya serving in both her role as Senior Program Director for Region 1 as well as Senior Program Director for Region 2, we have been operating well. After reviewing a plethora of resumes; interviewing several candidates, and reflecting on how we have been operating since October 1, I have concluded that we do not need to hire a second senior director. I feel that we have the talent internally to operate effectively, as well as the opportunity to continue providing professional development opportunities. Therefore, I am announcing a reorganization effective March 3. Tonya Golden will become the Chief Program Officer – responsible for oversight of all our programs shelters, PSH, RRH, outreach, hypo, etc. She will supervise the directors listed below. Tonya will Be moving her office to Admin. Chandra Beander, currently Assistant Director at Kennedy, will become Director of Programs for Single Adults, Region 1, responsible for all non-PSH programs in Region 1 plus SUSTAIN/Diversion. Our agency-wide Housing Locator Luke Taylor and Employment Liaison Paul Kola), will also continue to report to Chandra. Khristina Koontz, currently Assistant Director at Bailey’s, will become Director of Programs for Single Adults, Region 2, responsible for all BCCS-related contracts. Simajah Jackson, currently PSH Assistant Director, will become Director of Fairfax Permanent Supportive Housing Programs. She will be responsible for Mondloch House and Place, Housing First Apartment Programs, and all of FairfaxHUD-funded PSH programs for both single adults and families. Latasha Younger, currently Assistant Director for Alexandria and Arlington Programs, will become Director of City of Alexandria and Arlington County Programs with responsibility for our PSH programs in Arlington and Alexandria as well as the various programs we operate in the City of Alexandria. Under this reorganization, Steve Lonon will become Coordinator of Residential Services in Region 1,reporting directly to Chandra. Jeff Lisanick, currently Coordinator of Residential Services for Region 2, will continue in that role, now reporting to Khristina, and Kenny Smith will become Coordinator of Residential Services for Fairfax PSH, reporting to Simajah. Chavon Bell will become Senior Case Manager for Family Programs and Sharina Jagoonanan, Family Activities Specialist, will report directly to her. Chavon will be part of Simajah’s PSH team. I am hoping to be able to create a position of Senior Case Manager for Region 1, supervising shelter case managers and carrying a small caseload. This would not be an additional position but a promotion opportunity for a current case manager. At this point, this a goal, not some thing that is certain. I know I can count on everyone to work together to make this new chapter at NHH successful. Thanks to each of you for your ongoing dedication to our mission and to those men, women, and children who seek our help.

New Hope Housing Celebrates Black History Month with movie screening and entertainment program for staff and residents Staff Quarterly Meeting Moving Screening In recognition of Black History Month, New Hope shows culturally relevant films during winter staff quarterly meetings to foster discussions about diversity, inclusion, and race. This year staff selected the critically acclaimed film Get Out. The movie, which was satirical in nature allowed examination of the horrors of racism through the eyes of the lead character Chris during a visit with his white girl friends liberal parents. After screening the film, staff engaged in conversation about the themes of the movie and participated in a group exercise that allowed them to examine their opinions and experiences with racism and whether they could recognize when it’s overt or subtle “ The movie was really good. However, while it is intimidating for us [Black Americans] to share our feelings about racism in the presence of white co-works, it’s important for us to have this discussion so that others can gain an understanding of our experiences with racism” Akira Brown (PSH Case Manager)
