A Letter from the Editors Welcome to the Holiday issue of Lake Society Magazine! We have had a wonderful time connecting with local residents in their homes this month and we hope you enjoy meeting them. Dr. Jaime Davis invited us into her beautiful contemporary home on Halloween, where we met her rescue dogs Gary and Penny. When we met the Bogers, it was a chilly morning before school. We had a great time capturing fun photos of the family near Lake Calhoun. Our Harriet family, the Meschinis, invited us into their on-the-go lifestyle for an afternoon. Our architecture and design features include a look at Charlie Lazor’s iconic Stack house, as well as a walk through a Lake Calhoun carriage house that features a special piece of history. The Linden Hills bungalow is a study in serenity and calm, and features the work of Brooke Voss Design. We are excited to launch a couple of new editorial features for the publication. Our ‘Concierge’ section will take you to highly unusual and custom travel destinations through the narrative of native Minnesotan Sarah Ryan Duffy of SRD International. Our ‘Shop’ feature will showcase interesting local retailers in the neighborhood. Luxury Garage Sale (LGS), located in Edina, has the best in high-quality designer consignment. We look forward to highlighting local goings-on in the community through our SOCIAL section. Thank you again for your readership. If you go to our website, you can subscribe to Lake Society Magazine, and read the latest digital issue of the publication. Happy Holidays!

Isles Life
Lake of the Isles resident Jaime Davis, MD, and her daughter, Cecelia, enjoy a busy life with experiences rooted in two vastly different worlds. They live in the idyllic neighborhood of Kenwood and, whenever possible, they travel to the white sandy shores of the Bahamas, where Dr. Davis grew up. Jaime attended Mayo Medical School and completed her internal medicine and dermatology residency at the Mayo Clinic. She practiced within the Mayo Health System for eight years before she began looking for Twin Cities locations that might be suitable for a private practice of her own. Choosing Uptown as the location for her dermatology practice in 2005 was a bit of a risk, but Dr. Davis described her rationale. “After much consideration I decided that Uptown was ready for some specialty medical services which had traditionally only been available in the suburbs. I am so glad that I located Uptown Dermatology & SkinSpa in such a vibrant urban setting.”
After living in several different Twin Cities neighborhoods, Dr. Davis purchased a home in Kenwood in 2016. She loves the feeling of being in a quiet wooded area, while being close to urban amenities, Cece’s school, and her own business. The Davis’s home was built in 1906 and was completely renovated in the 1990’s. The home has a modern open floor plan and a spacious kitchen. In the backyard, floating cube decks have been installed on the steep slope to create a relaxing place to enjoy warm summer evenings and cool fall nights. Their dogs, Gary and Penny, both adopted from Underdog Rescue, also enjoy the outdoor space. Jaime is an avid art collector and her eclectic pieces are beautifully showcased throughout the home, as well in outdoor spaces. Her favorite local artists include Jodi Reeb, Patrick Pryor, Thor Paulson, Michael Larson and Scott Seekins. When asked about her strategies for coping with the long Minnesota winters, Jaime replied, “I’m still an island girl! Winter is a beautiful season but I don’t think I’ll ever adjust! I’m happiest with my toes in Bahamian sand, strolling on white sand beaches on a balmy day – with plenty of sunscreen, of course!” Jaime is an avid, certified scuba diver and she loves to head back to the Bahamas to pursue this passion. Her daughter Cece is also in the process of becoming a certified diver. Dr. Davis has always lived a very active life with a focus on fitness. “I earned the title of Miss Northern Bahamas Body Building Champion in 1986. I kid you not!” She exclaimed. She is an American College of Sports Medicine Certified Fitness instructor and has earned a brown belt in Judo. Cecelia is also an active and gifted athlete. She is an avid rock climber at Vertical Endeavors and a budding circus artist. Cece is currently mastering the unicycle, juggling and the German wheel, which require incredible balance and coordination. When Jaime and Cece are in the Twin Cities they enjoy fun, local activities such as Walker Mini Golf. A favorite holiday tradition is attending Loyce Houlton’s Nutcracker ballet at the Orpheum. There are usually lots of friends in tow -- the more the merrier! If you happen to come into Uptown Dermatology, be sure to let Dr. Davis know that you are neighbors! 12

“Designing a home around what we call ‘social spaces’, where social interaction drives the design, is the key to making a home with a soul.” holiday 2017

When Albertsson Hansen Architect was contacted about a major remodeling to an 1891 house in a historic Minneapolis lakes neighborhood, the client’s goals were twofold: First, create a highly functional, modern interpretation of a historic home for an active family with two children. Second, create a space that is beautiful, elegant, and spare, but also hardworking, for a family that loves to cook for large gatherings of friends and family. The project included a complete kitchen and breakfast room remodel, as well as the creation of a subterranean mudroom and prep/utility kitchen. These link the formerly detached garage to the main house. A new deck spans the area between the house and the garage. The remodeled vaulted playroom above the garage provides a place for the family to relax and serves as the owner’s home office. New seven-foot tall windows located on the back-garage gables allow views of the wooded area beyond.
16
The project completely replaced a 1990’s “fancy” kitchen filled with stained cabinetry and too many big moldings. As architect Todd Hansen remarked, “Our intention was to make the kitchen and breakfast room tie into the details of the main floor living room of the house, while providing the up-to-date functionality necessary to serve the family’s needs.”

The Johnston-Tuong house, also known as the Stack House, was designed for a family: a family of four and a family of 24. Paul and Mandy, the homeowners, and architect Charlie Lazor, worked as a team to design a home with cozy and comfortable spaces for everyday living. But they also knew the home needed to host the swell of extended family that gathers for celebrations and dinners. That required a mix of open spaces and more intimate spaces that were welcoming to all. “Designing a home around what we call ‘social spaces’, where social interaction drives the design, is the key to making a home with a soul,” suggested Charlie Lazor. “The kitchen counter is not just a place to chop vegetables; it needs to be really carefully considered as a comfortable gathering place that generates conversation.“ The collaboration between the Johnston-Tuongs and Lazor was successful. The home allows everyone to be together but also for a grandmother or a cousin to ‘tuck in’ around the corner into a cozier space for one or two persons. Wood was used extensively in the interior to define spaces and envelope the entire family in warmth.
Charlie’s firm, Lazor/Office is committed to ‘place making’. Lazor described his firm’s process in the following way: “We study a site for the subtle but simple beauty it offers. It could be a mature tree, a sunny spot for a garden and lawn chair, the lay of the land, and that which all properties offer - the sky and the light. For us, the nature outside is the starting point for our work. Our homes are a frame onto nature, whether it’s a city size strip of garden or a lake.” It’s no wonder that his designs are so highly sought after – and considered iconic in the world of modern architecture and modular home design. Lazor teaches at the Graduate School of Architecture at the U of M, and is a guest critic at Yale School of Architecture, his alma mater. He received his BA from Williams College. “I love to work with clients who are their own person, know what they want, and aren’t looking over their shoulder,” says Lazor. That makes for a perfect collaboration. holiday 2017

Calhoun Life
It was love at first sight. Chad and Shayla Boger moved into their Lake Calhoun home twelve years ago. “We will never forget the first time we saw our house; we knew it was the one.” Chad and Shayla were both born and raised in the Twin Cities, but fell in love with the Lakes neighborhoods when they started dating fifteen years ago. At the time, Chad had an apartment near Lake Harriet. The two of them would walk the neighborhood and talk about making the area their home. A couple of years later they were able to make it a reality. The Bogers are a tight-knit family unit that allows for Individual exploration too. Chad is a dentist and works at the practice his family built over 40 years ago. His father was a businessman and dentist, and his mother supported growing the business into a successful practice built on quality relationships, connections and a comfortable atmosphere. Chad continues this legacy today. Shayla works at Spot Spa in Uptown Minneapolis as a Skin Therapist. She also has a private practice centered on Sacred Esoteric Healing, an ancient energy healing technique that delivers trailblazing results. Daughter Eleanor, is 10 years old – a fierce female with a heart of gold. She loves her family, friends, reading, story telling, writing letters, art, soccer and the Green Bay Packers. Son Ansel, is 8 years old. He, too, loves time with family, friends and he enjoys telling stories. Soccer, dancing, building with Legos, and supporting the Green Bay Packers round out his days. Travel is at the top of the list of things the family likes to do together. The Twin Cities Lakes region has much to offer a young, active family like the Bogers. “We love having several co-op’s within a 5 mile radius. We have wholesome restaurants nearby, as well as the Minneapolis Institute of Art and the Walker Art Museum. We also enjoy the historical aspects of the city,” commented Shayla. “There is so much to do! We love the people, the lakes, the trails, and from our home we have easy access to virtually any neighborhood in the metro area.” The Boger family has made volunteer work an integral part of family life. They volunteer together monthly at the Prism Food Shelf and during the holidays they join other local organizations to support families in need. Last holiday season their family sponsored a family through Adopt A Family Angels — Minnesota. Chad is a very active member of Rotary International. He served as the club President and is currently the Director of the Foreign Youth Exchange. The Bogers are looking forward to the holiday season. “Our favorite thing over the holidays is being together and the stillness that the winter brings,” said Shayla. “We have learned over the years not to over-schedule ourselves during the holiday season, so we have space to enjoy the moment.” When the Bogers venture out, they connect with friends or go see a show. Last year they attended “The Hip Hop Nutcracker” which the entire family enjoyed immensely. They also love to go downhill skiing, snow tubing, as well as cross-country skiing, around the lake trails. Holiday lights, pine trees dusted with snow, bright sunny days, clear cold nights and laughter – it’s a magical time of year.

HISTORIC REVIVAL holiday 2017

When the owners of an 1886 home and carriage house were forced to demolish and rebuild both structures, they were committed to preserving a piece of history. The home had been damaged in a fire in the 1940’s and although repaired, was deemed structurally deficient and a remodel wasn’t an option. The entry door limestone surround from the original home was meticulously salvaged and preserved prior to the demolition. The surround was numbered, catalogued piece-by-piece, and put into storage for 5 years. It was later installed on the new carriage house with a custom wooden door.
The carriage house sports a 13-foot ceiling, clear-height basement which accommodates storage and a golf simulator. The garage level is finished with full wainscot and sheet-rocked walls and high quality light fixtures. The garage is a fully finished space that, when not in use for parties and events, serves as parking space for cars and bicycles. The studio level of the carriage house is a welcome respite for family and guests. It’s beautifully appointed and has two decks fitted with handsome wrought iron details. One deck has a spectacular view of the driving range and golf course at Minikahda Club.
The homeowners wanted the new carriage house to serve as a multi-purpose space, consistent with the design of main house. Charles Ainsworth Design created a plan that brought the homeowner’s interest in Spanish Renaissance architecture together with design elements of homes around Lake of the Isles.
Penny Ainsworth, a residential designer on the project, commented, “Both the carriage house and the main house are appointed with rich, warm finishes and classic, timeless details,” she explained. “Requests for ‘pops of color’ make for pleasant, happy and cozy spaces for the entire family to enjoy.”

The Southwest Minneapolis Meschini family home is a filled with a strong combination of Minnesota warmth and Argentinian charm. Eugenio, Teresa, and their four children: Isabella, Laura, Primo, and Mia, thoroughly enjoy living close to Lake Harriet and The Minnehaha Creek, in a closely-knit neighborhood. Eugenio’s roots stem from Argentina, whereas Teresa is Minnesota-born and raised. Their marital combination results in a dynamic duo! The Meschini family love their city lakes lifestyle and they embrace their neighborhood. “We had a stone patio installed in the front of our house which functions as our second living room in the Summer months. It is a magical spot to watch the life of our city-block, with the neighbor kids playing and the joggers and bikers passing-by. We drink coffee and read the newspaper out there in the morning, eat dinner out there in the evening, and are always thrilled to invite neighbors to join us for a glass or two of Famiglia Meschini wines!” exclaims Teresa. The lovely wines in question are a labor of love for the Meschini’s, who produce and import wines from their Argentinian winery estate, located in the Mendoza Valley. Teresa explains, “The wine business started as an investment in a vineyard with Eugenio’s best friend and former rugby buddy, Andres Fourcade, to develop a vineyard to sell grapes to other wine labels. A few years into that investment we decided to vinify our own grapes and start our own label, “Famiglia Meschini.” We chose the name “Famiglia,” with an Italian-spelling, in honor of Eugenio’s grandfather, who emigrated from Italy to Argentina.” Teresa jokingly adds, “Eugenio and I would like to stay married so we have very distinct and separate roles in the business. He is involved in the production and working with the winemaker and communicating with his brother who is involved in the business in Argentina. I am involved in the marketing of the wine here in Minnesota. We both enjoy going to wine events together – we consider them date nights. This community has blessed us with the support of our wine and we are continually amazed at the support we receive from those who value boutique wines and the local connection. And, we have the opportunity to visit the vineyard in Argentina, along with our amazing family there, and share the wine here with our family and friends.” The Meschini family enjoys playing together and can be seen out and about on the city lakes and bike trails. Teresa notes, “As a family we enjoy outdoor sports. In the summer, you may find us paddle boarding at Lake Harriet or riding our bikes for a bite to eat at Prima or Red Wagon Pizza, both restaurants proudly pouring the Famiglia Meschini wines. Eugenio and I enjoy cross country skiing in the winter. Mostly we love to spend time together as a family whether it be watching a sports game or going out to dinner—because who doesn’t like getting a good bite to eat and having a nice glass of wine.” The Meschini’s are a fun combination of local, Minneapolis pride and authentic, Argentinian spirit. Teresa exclaims, “What we value about the culture in Minneapolis is the sense of community, the arts and sports culture, and very importantly, we are huge Vikings fans and huge Argentine soccer fans!

The Linden Hills Bungalow is a toasty warm house chock full of classic charm and original architectural details. When interior designer Brooke Voss met her clients, she was quite smitten with the entire family, including three rambunctious boys and an adorable dog. The homeowners had added family room space to the back of the house, along with a mudroom and powder room. They enlisted in Brooke’s help to create a family room space that was comfortable, approachable and not “off limits” to the kids. Voss assisted her clients with the interior finish selections as well as the furniture, art, accessories, lighting, and ultimately, the styling of the home. She incorporated a number of treasured family heirlooms and antiques with new, updated elements. When asked about her approach to this project, Voss replied, “In any of my project collaborations my foremost design goal is to make the space the very best version of the owner’s vision. I take queues from the colors or patterns they wear, and objects or art they have collected over time.” She also loves the challenge of modernizing an old home while paying homage to its original bones and architecture. She maintained the creamy colored millwork and cabinetry throughout the new addition. Instead of purchasing a brand new dining table, Voss decided to polish up a family treasure that has been passed through the generations. The gorgeous walnut wood was freshened with a lovely grey stain. The dark navy blue grass cloth in the dining room is moody, yet fresh, sophisticated, and fun. She selected cabinetry panels with inset antique mirrors for the bar backsplash, a creative alternative to the traditional choice of tile or marble. There’s nothing not to love about the classic blue and white palette and the layering of family treasures into the inviting space. And, being true to her word, Brooke got her color inspiration from exterior shutters as well as the blue-grey nail color often worn by her client. These colors were thoughtfully woven throughout the interior. The result is a warm, welcoming space with character, dimension and charm.

Are you looking for your little piece of paradise? Actor Marlon Brando found his in French Polynesia in 1967 while filming Mutiny on the Bounty. He purchased Tetiaroa Atoll, a string of small islands located a short 20 minute flight from Papeete, Tahiti. In 1999 he and Richard Bailey began to develop one of the atolls into a resort that would later become The Brando. Their focus was not only on creating a resort of great beauty but of self-sustaining luxury. The resort is comprised of one, two and three bedroom villas. Each villa is beautifully designed with a den, a sitting room and bedroom areas. The vaulted ceilings with thatched roofs lend to the romance and authenticity of the island. The oversized bathrooms feature walk in showers and outdoor bathtubs. Your private pool, sundeck, and access to your own strip of beach are just outside your wall of glass doors. The cuisine is creative with a local flair. The organic produce grown in the resort’s own gardens and orchards is elevated to haute cuisine by the famed chef Guy Martin. The twostarred Michelin chef of Le Grand Vefour in Paris has menu offerings in both of the resort’s restaurants. The Brando offers packages that include all meals, beverages (except premium wines/ spirits), a daily activity and spa treatment. The myriad of activities offered at The Brando are as unique as the destination. Of course the usual beach activities are readily available, but what makes the Brando so unique are the options that can only be found here. Visit the onsite research center and discuss with the local scientists their work with bird and marine life. The Polynesian culture is explored in dance lessons and pareu dyeing & tying classes. The hike around the island with the resident naturalist, shows another beautiful face of the atoll. The “backstage” tour of the resort will show how methodically they work to be sustainable. They aim to keep their carbon footprint as low as possible and have tapped the local seawater to cool the villas and common spaces of resort. At the end of a busy day, two bars offer signature cocktails and live music. A starlit Tahitian dance spectacle is pure magic, performed weekly for The Brando’s guests. The Brando is truly Paradise Found. It is a fantastic blend of the luxury they have created and the beauty that has always been. Sara Ryan Duffy. srdinternational.com holiday 2017

There was just something about hats that drew local rising star, Celina Kane, to pursue Millinery. Raised in a family of entrepreneurs and creatives, she was no stranger to what living one’s dream looked like; her mother started an eco-focused restaurant at age 21! Not only did she embark on a demanding craft, but she innovated it in her very first design. Creating the Quadratto (patented), from a vision and a collaboration with a master blocker, the hat is her signature. Celina’s first hat, however, was a classic 90’s style bucket hat. Since then, she favors a silk, couture turban of her own make. We sat down in her studio and over a coffee at Moose and Sadie’s to talk about craftwomanship, art in the family and our shared love of headwear. As a daily wearer of hats, I wondered, can everyone adopt the “hat a day” mantra. Celina’s response embodied both her free spirit and her thoughtfulness. She said, “Hats are powerful, they transform you like no other accessory which may be why we fear them.” So, if a hat is power. If a hat is a statement. Minneapolis might be the perfect place to be just at this precise moment. Minneapolis/St. Paul, as she describes, “understands and values craft like no other place.” Active at the Women’s Club, in the fashion collaboration scene and in supporting women, Celina is bright, vibrant, engaged, and highly skilled. She is building a business like a true Minnesotan, with practicality, vision and dedication to being the best without pretense. Needless to say, when I travel with a Hat Make creation, I always get noticed. You can see her entire catalog at www.hatmake.com or contact her for a fitting and couture piece. You won’t be disappointed.

CULTURE
Marnita’s Table was co-founded in the living room of Carl Goldstein and Marnita Schroedl. The non-profit originally launched to ignite enduring cross-cultural connections through intentional social interaction. The first 14,000 of the over 40,000 guests who’ve attended a “table” actually came to Carl and Marnita’s little Dutch colonial located at the north end of Lake of the Isles. Guests were served a feast that satisfied everyone from vegan to carnivore, with the food lovingly prepared by Marnita. Marnita, raised in the foster care system and emancipated at the age of 16 said, “I never want anyone to feel unwelcome in the way I felt growing up. I will feed anyone who comes to my door.” The idea that ALL people need to feel as though they are welcome and belong, not just those with material resources, is at the heart of Marnita and Carl’s innovative “feast & dialogue” concept. They began hosting groups from 30-50 people to catalyze authentic relationships and find common ground across difference. They soon recognized that “Intentional Social Interaction” wasn’t just a method but rather a model now fondly called “IZI.” They’ve trained over 1,500 home hosts whom are conducting IZIs in community centers, church basements and other people’s homes all over the country. “There is an urgent and compelling need to bring people together across difference in our country today,” commented Marnita. “ We are currently seeking critical funding for Rapid Response IZI Teams that can be deployed when and where they are needed the most.” Marnita and her team have also launched Kitchen Table Conversations for Everyday People Civics with Civility, to help everyday people bring their friends and family together across political differencecalmlyandpeacefully. The organization conducts trainings and IZIs that are open to all. Check out their website to learn more!

On Friday, October 13th, the Newborn Foundation hosted the 4th Annual Babies and Badasses Gala at the historic Lumber Exchange Building in Minneapolis. The evening was dedicated to combatting newborn mortality and directly impacting the health outcomes of the youngest, most fragile babies. WCCO’s Jason DeRusha served as an emcee for the evening’s agenda, which highlighted families impacted by newborn health challenges, and featured local medical partners and global public health experts from the National Institutes of Health in the Philippines, the International Society of Neonatal Screening and the U.S. CDC. The Oceanaire Seafood Room generously provided a gourmet culinary experience for the gala attendees. Special musical guests included the NYC-based string trio Time for Three and NPR’s The Current/Transmission DJ, Jake Rudh. Proceeds from the event, including the silent auction, will fund polices and programs that develop and leverage technologies to improve early detection of health conditions and access to quality care for newborns. Thanks to the generosity of corporate underwriters, every dollar raised will go directly toward the Newborn Foundation’s domestic and international programs.
